Grand

By kwine |

One of those rare new restaurants, with incredible food and service. The appetizers were light -- and to make mac and cheese with crab taste rich but not heavy is a gift. The main dishes were balanced and delicate -- a creamy vegetable risotto, and pork with parsnips. The entire experience was made better by the service, which was Michelin worthy. It won't be long before this place is packed. Go now while you can.

Brunch

By Jhall53 |

Such a cute brunch spot in Castro. Small inside but has an adorable outside patio. Lots of plants for a great scenery and plenty of shade to be comfortable while dining outside. I had the Cesar salad with added crab meat. The salad could've been a little more but the freshness of the crab meat made up for it. The cheeseburger was actually the star of the brunch. Two other friends enjoyed eggs benedict and said the hollandaise sauce was good. There was only one page to choose entrees from but the few were done well.

Tasty food in a lovely backyard

By Marco V |

Located in Castro street, Fable offered us a tasty dinner combined with very good California wine. Recommendation: ask to be seated in the outside backyard, the atmosphere there is really special and don't worry if it's chilly outside, the backyard is heated.

Liked it so much, we visited twice in the same day

By jimhopkins |

We enjoyed Saturday brunch on the patio so much, we returned for dinner the same night. For our brunch group of four people, brunch was two orders of French toast, buttermilk pancakes, and two quinoa brunch bowls with poached eggs. For dinner, our group of four had, among several items, a roasted red and golden beet salad, plus rabbit with farfalle pasta.

Good food, but beware of reservation /seating process

By Thomas T |

The first time after both calling and stopping by to make a reservation later that day, the restaurant had lost our reservation, so we had to go elsewhere. A couple weeks later we walked in and asked for a table for 2. The host said it would be a 10 minute wait. After waiting 20 minutes he clarified that it would be at the counter, and we were seated after 40 min. We got to watch the salad chef carefully construct our salad, which was an excellent choice. Food was good to very good, and the server was appropriately attentive. Wine was mostly more than $10 per glass. I'd consider it again, but the restaurant needs to improve its reservation/seating/wait estimation process.

Great Food in the Castro

By WellTraveled3 |

Had a great red quinoa bowl with soft-boiled eggs, squash and greens for lunch with a ice tea. Food was very fresh and well prepared and served promptly by an efficient and happy staff. Located in the heart of the Castro District.

An Okay Meal with Lots of Extras (Charges)

By CreateSF |

Tried Fable today. It's in the same location that The Patio used to be in years ago, so it's nice. We got one of the tables out in front. The heaters weren't on, so it was a little chilly, but we managed. The brunch menu was limited but what we ordered (Denver Omelette, Chicken Sandwich and Quinoa Salad) was just okay, not anything to write home about! The biggest thing is the nickel and dime extra charges, e.g. I ordered a diet coke and then at one point asked for a refill...those two drinks were $10. Refills are not free! Also, they pair a lot of their meals with salads (green, onion (?), etc.), so if you want fries with your sandwich or burger, yep, that'll be $2 extra. I'm glad we tried it just to see how it was, but to spend $101 for three people (including taxes, SF surcharges and a 17.5% tip) is a bit much and we probably will just go back to Mystique which is up the street and serves much larger portions and doesn't surcharge for switching from salad to fries or on diet coke refills.

The patio is open!

By sfimporter |

Now, the food here has always been good, though my first experience was very soon after they had opened, so they were still getting their footing stable. Having returned, I'm happy to say that the food is just as good as always, and the back patio is now open! This is a small space and the lack of the back dining patio was a serious blow. Now that it's back open, this is sure to be a big hot spot for brunch. On our last visit they had a menu addition of biscuits & gravy - a favorite of one of our party - and it was good. I'm still not happy about all of the necessary add-ons - like toast or an english muffin, or bacon. I'd rather just get it with the meal and be charged for it. Though I guess having to think about it is what keeps the Castro boys slim.

Farewell dinner

By wms5257 |

Sit by the bar and view all the action from the open kitchen. It's such a treat! The food itself is on the good level but not a signature one. Try their Caesar salad and special steak with rare status. The salad is a bit salty. The steak is acceptable. The real treat here is the service. It's very good one.

Hidden Courtyard Garden

By Kate_Ren |

We arrived in San Francisco early. After some quick googling, we found this gem. You can't tell from the outside but this place has the cutest courtyard garden. Most folks in my group got fish tacos, which were fresh and delicious. Don't miss the aperol and limoncello spritz cocktails!

Great for special occasions!

By Edwin R |

Fable has a table for two right in front of their window. I highly recommend you dine there for your anniversary or special celebration for two. Their duck salad was really good, but their Brined and grilled all natural pork chop with honey-dijon glaze was mouthwatering delicious. We also enjoyed Fable's Grilled leg of lamb with Rosemary and Mint Gremolata. For dessert, they recommended their Chocolate Mouse which was fantastic. One of the best part while dining with Fable is their patio at back. You will feel like a local since it is surrounded by homes in the Castro area. Until then, Cheers! ~ :p

Great New Place

By Regina K |

We hit Fable for a Girls Night Out meal and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The server was polite, knowledgeable, didn't hover but was attentive. We did it all from appetizers to entrees, sides, desserts and wine. Everything was delicious! And the decor is a beautiful ecclentic mix of rustic and welcoming.

Fantastic fig and goat cheese tartine

By Eve S |

After hiking about 7 miles and 6 peaks (including Twin Peaks) in San Francisco, the 10 ladies in my hiking group stopped at Fable for a mid-afternoon "brunch". Everyone was very pleased with their meal. Several of the group had the quinoa salad and were very pleased with it. I had the fig and goat cheese tartine, which was excellent. The service was friendly and was able to set us up with a table for 10 outside in the back.

Good yet pricey

By Philip P |

We enjoyed our dinner with friends. Food was solid, wine list fine. Service was nice. Inside dining is tiny, and for warmer weather I know the patio is super. This location has been many different things through the years, and this is by far the toniest. I thought the prices were a tad high, but then you are in San Francisco.

Wee gem

By alexpinna |

Lovely restaurant and friendly service. Surf and turf was first class. Only sight downside is no wine outside on the deck after 9 due to the licence but it's worth it for the food.

Cozy, low-key California cuisine

By SFBayTravelSensei |

This restaurant is in our neighborhood so we have eaten here on a few occasions. This last time we had the duck confit and a bottle of a Napa Cab Sauvignon. It was supposed to be a "romantic" evening and we had a great time. Service attentive but prompt, and the food cooked perfectly. The waiter made excellent suggestions on the wine. We had reservations on a Saturday night, but we arrived early; towards the middle of our dinner, the restaurant was packed - I think having an early reservation makes all the difference. All in all, a very pleasant evening!

OMG amazing food

By Tyson C |

Great place to eat. Its COVID so we ate out front since we had no reservations. The table part was a little disorganized. A few people saying the same thing to all the customers led to a table confusion. The food order was wrong, but I will let that go too, as the food was amazing. Shared a pitcher of mimosas and had a great time. The waiter was cool but doing maybe too many things at once. I would recommend this place for sure.

Good food in a nice atmosphere with attentive service

By AshishGuptasfo |

We called on a Friday evening and were able to get a table right away. We started with the salmon on a crostini as an appetizer. For main's we had the vanilla chicken, stuffed pork and beat loaf all were excellent. We also ordered sides of the Mac and cheese, which was amazing, and Brussel sprouts. The bring the bread out on request and it was warm and delicious. The service was attentive, and unobtrusive.

Cool Atmosphere and Great Brunch!

By David K |

Fun hipster SF spot for brunch. The patio is well heated and very comfortable. Great coffee and service. We had the eggs benedict and the fried egg and pork sandwich both were great. The chocolate banana bread is a home run!

Tasty food and friendly service

By Richard H |

I was there for Brunch this morning and it was rather busy so we could not sit on the back patio. However, looking over the menu, though it was short, there seemed to be a great selection of dishes which were very creative. I was not disappointed with the local California asparagus with meyer lemon sauce and crispy shoestring fries and poached egg. All the flavors fell together in perfect harmony. Paolo the waiter made the dining experience wonderful.

Lovely setting and perfectly prepared food

By Brian H |

My husband is vegan so sometimes it is hard to find something we can all agree on. We were a group of 5 and 2 in the party ordered the vegan lasagna. I wish I had - it was delicious! Lovely staff and setting.

The steak was delish, the fries were reheated yuck.

By K D |

The $33 steak and fries were ruined by awful fries. The steak and gravy were delicious. The texture and temperature of the fries harkened fries that were a few hours old and nuked. Bleh. I requested a glass of house white and the waitress must have felt that I needed an upgrade. $15 glass of wine on the bill. Bummer.

Great outdoor venue - you won't think you are in San Francisco

By chicago90Phoenix |

The surprise awaits in the backyard; a little oasis with statutes, colors, and cozy tables. Went for a late lunch that included both eggs benedict and a cobb salad for 2.

Great meal in the Castro

By Steve L |

This is one of my 2 favorite restaurants I the Castro. The food is prepared with a great of detail. The pork cheek appetizer was incredible. The main course we ordered the stuffed pork lion and the pot roast,I liked the pork lion but the pot roast was crazy good. To full to eat dessert. Had some more wine instead, great location and great fun, small place but did not feel cramped.

Hidden gem in the Castro, delicious food, professional, gracious service

By SFgal40 |

My husband and I had dinner at Fable for my birthday and we couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised with not only the food, but the entire experience. We had a gift certificate and hadn't been able to go (it was nearly 6 months old), but after I booked our reservation, I couldn't find the actual certificate. I called the restaurant and left a message to explain our dilemma and to see if they could help. Someone called back right away and very patiently took all the information and said they'd try to resolve it asap. When we arrived for our seating, the host immediately told us that he'd been able to find the record and that they could honor it, no problem. I had felt awkward about the whole thing but everyone was so nice about it, and I appreciated that. It was quiet when we arrived and he had saved us a nice table in the garden under a heat lamp, but I preferred inside, so he moved us without hesitation. Our servers were also lovely and solicitous and something about the way they treated customers elevated the experience above your average restaurant. Most of all, the food was also really wonderful, we loved every dish we ordered and couldn't stop exclaiming throughout the meal. I had the salmon and my husband the pork chop, and both were just yummy. Bread pudding and chocolate mousse were excellent, too. It's a bit expensive, but perfect for a date night or special occasion. There's a cute garden in back too for nice evenings. We spend a lot of time in France and it reminded me a dinner in Paris--great food, but simple, nice wine, good service. Go to Fable, you'll love it.

Long wait but worth it

By PierTom |

I went with a party of five, and this is quite a small place. With reservations, we waited for nearly 40 minutes, but the host was very gracious about it and tried politely to get the previous guests to settle up. I suppose it's a testament to the restaurant that they wanted to linger and linger even after finishing dessert. In return for our inconvenience, we were comped two desserts and our party felt that this more than made up for the wait. The food is terrific. It sits on the cusp of being interesting without being scary. The "beetloaf" is an amazing vegan choice and satisfying for meat lovers as well. Everything we tried was prepared beautifully and well-portioned. The service was pleasant and unobtrusive. The decor was attractive and the sound level, while a bit high, was typical of a crowded, fun restaurant. This is the best dining experience I've had in this neighborhood where there are quite a few choices, but none as memorable as Fable.

Varied menu, good food - just not excellent

By PliniusCaecilius |

Has a nice outdoor patio (where I have eaten when it was a different restaurant. -Restaurants come and go quickly in this area of town.) The interior restaurant is a long narrow space. Seating is comfortable, but there is a constant stream of customers passing by to get to/from the back patio. Waitstaff was attentive, and willing to describe the dishes on the menu with unfamiliar names (which I cannot remember now).. The dinner menu was quite varied in style of cooking, so anyone could find something on it that they might like. Appetizers included Dijon Crusted Braised Pork Cheeks, Fried Tongue with Fried Tripe, a salad of celery heart, grapes, and toasted walnuts. There were lots of unusual flavorings and spices among the dinner items. Dinner items included roast chicken breast with sweet and sour sherry (wished that were "cherry)", beef filet with coriander, and a braised rabbit. I ate the rabbit, which was unfortunately slathered in a tomato based sauce to hide the taste of the rabbit, and over cooked. Nothing at all like the great rabbit main courses I have eaten in France. The tongue-tripe appetizer was very filling, and the tripe a bit greasy. One does not leave hungry. A chef with ambitious desires, that are not quite pulled off well as well as they should be. With main courses in the $25 - $30 range, a bit overpriced for the quality delivered. Good and hearty - just not excellent.

Fable should be renamed Fablulous

By biskitabroad |

We were fortunate to drop in to this restaurant and for there to be a vacancy. The staff were terrific, being very knowledgeable about the food and helpful with any requests we had. The food was sensational. I had the duck, which was succulent and delicious, my brother had the lamb which was so good that we decided we had to return and try some more of their offerings. They also had a great wine list. When we returned two days later we were disappointed to find that the duck was not on that day's menu, however we tried the pork chops which were just as delicious. We thought it was great value for money.

On point

By mribando |

We were taking my nephew out to dinner while visiting San Francisco and all of the trendy places were booked for a 6pm reservation on a Sunday night. I found this on Open Table ~ it had good reviews and a nice menu. I was not disappointed. It's in a very cool part of town - "the Castro". We were warmly greeted and asked if we wanted to sit in the Garden, which was nicely heated. It was very inviting. The service across the board was excellent, as was the food. I had the special - which was a grilled artichoke with Dungeness crab - it was perfect. My husband had the pot roast, my nephew the grilled chicken which both looked good and they both enjoyed. For desert light and fluffy chocolate moose with a salted caramel creme - to die for. I'll be back.

Hit & Miss; Great Outdoor Patio

By Gailyn63 |

We went here with friends before a movie at the nearby Castro Theatre. We ordered the pot roast and halibut, as well as a bottle of wine. The pot roast was disappointingly dry, while the halibut was fantastic. Service was slow, but the server had a number of tables to handle. The wine, a sangiovese, was reasonable for $47. The outdoor patio, which is heated, is beautiful, with many plants and flowers surrounding the tables.

Great Food and Super Service

By Hogwild752 |

This was my first visit to Fable, and I'm sure it won't be my last. The staff with whom I interacted were all cheerful, helpful, and attentive. I had read some really good things about the food. I have to say that's tonight's dinner lived up to the praise. I chose the Creamy Tomato Soup for my started. It was a special for the evening. It arrived hot to my table. The soup was very tasty with a silky texture to it. Loved it. I followed with the Stuffed Pork Roast. The suggested wine pairing was a red Zin. The pairing was spot on. Both the roast and the wine were full of flavor and really complimented each other. I had a difficult time choosing dessert. I was torn between the Peach and Berry Crisp or the Coconut Cream Cake. I asked the server for advice. She said that the Crisp was probably the most popular, but the cake was really special. I took her at her word and ordered the cake. I'm not normally a cake person. I'm a pie kind of guy, but the cake was very moist and really hit the spot. I liked the fruit between the layers. I was seated at the counter. It was a stainless steel counter looking directly into the open kitchen. I do enjoy watching my meal being prepared. I thought the use of the red/black/orange glass tile "backsplash" on the counter was a warm and homey counterpoint to the stainless steel. This is a place that I will definitely revisit when I'm in San Francisco again.

Great Sunday Brunch

By MissS85 |

This was our first time at Fable and we were very happy with our brunch. Fable has bottomless mimosas for $20. It’s well worth it! Their brunch menu is a little funky, but we all managed to find something we liked on the menu. I ordered the scrambled eggs with vegetables and French fries. It was prepared so different than any other scrambled eggs I have ever had. My niece ordered the best thing on the menu. It was French toast, but not the French toast we’re accustomed to. It actually tasted like a cross between tiramisu and a doughnut. It was drenched in sweet maple syrup and filled with mascarpone cheese. It was out of this world. I think the four of us basically shared my niece’s brunch. It’s definitely the number 1 choice for brunch on their menu. The setting is conducive for quiet conversation and everyone has their own space. You’re not seated on top of everyone else. It was a great experience eating at Fable, it’s going on our list of great places to return to when we’re in back in San Francisco.

Great brunch in a garden patio

By Marchador |

I went for brunch on Saturday. It was nice outside so we were offered a table in the patio. What a great idea, the atmosphere was so quiet and relaxing, far from the noisy street. The brunch menu is not huge but good enough; we checked what others were eating and all looked appealing to us, so I went for an omelette and my wife for a tuna salad; both were awesome, tasteful and well cooked. You know that you ate good when your stomach is not remembering you the brunch time, and this was the case, so I guess that their products were high quality. Affordable, a romantic place for straights and homos; it's not one of those place were straights may feel out of place. I'll come back next time I'm in SF.

AMAZING

By mcallava |

I celebrated my 23rd birthday at Fable, and all I can say is wow. This restaurant is perfect and amazing. Everything from the interior decoration, to the enchanted garden outside, the staff, & most importantly the food was INCREDIBLE. It was art, literally edible art. Both beautifully displayed & amazingly delicious. If you are a foodie this is a MUST GO!!!

Really great tasting food

By Rob D |

Actually used TripAdvisor to find somewhere to eat as my original choice was closed and it did not disappoint. The service was really friendly and fast and the food was very high quality and tasted great. The kitchen is also open at the front so you can see what is going on.

Great food, fantastic atmosphere

By johajp |

We were looking to go to another restaurant nearby, but it was booked full. I Googled "restaurants like..." Fable came up. 3 blocks away. Wow, what a great experience and excellent food. The Ricotta Stuffed Squash Blossoms were so delicious we ordered a second one. I had the Mushroom Lasagna, my table mates ordered the Chicken, pork chops and the cheeseburger. Of course we all shared bites around. Everything was wonderful. The small garden seating area is delightfully relaxing. The Fable is now on our list of repeat places to go when we travel to SF.

Like dining in a garden

By Maureen M |

Went with friends and sat out back on the porch, despite the rain. Heaters were on and the rain just added a soothing backdrop to our meal. Comfort food all around: cioppino and meatloaf were both reported to be excellent. My choice was the side of Mac and Cheese, with Dungeness crab as an add on. Totally delish comfort food! Waiter was great. Would go back again!

Wonderful dining experience - delicious food & great service!

By Kevin S |

We went for dinner to Fable on our first night in San Fran and had a wonderful time. I had the dijon crusted pork cheeks as entree and the crispy skinned chicken breast for the main; and they were both amazing. For dessert, I had the chocolate mousse w/ whipped cream and it was well, for lack of a better word... quite simply orgasmic... I'm still thinking about it now and the pork cheeks as well! Fable serves modern american dishes and their prices are quite affordable + the service is great. They're quite busy so be sure to make a reservation prior to going..

Great patio area and food

By PhillDanze |

We ate here with a couple of friends. The patio area out the back is great and has overhead heaters if it gets cold. Tranquil setting with no street noise. Food was good as was the service. The house red wine was also nice and not cheap and nasty line some house Reds can be. Recommended.

Dinner with a friend

By EHayes575 |

Was in San Francisco for the weekend and made plans to meet up with a childhood friend for dinner. The service was great and the food was good but just not as good as I had hoped based on other reviews I'd read.

Top points all round

By Vicky G |

We hadn't booked a table so were lucky to get in here and it was our last evening. So glad we chose this place as wow the food was amazing and the service impeccable. The staff were friendly and knowledgable about what they had to offer and gave great recommendations. A perfect meal for our last night in San Francisco.

our last gem

By HDLBruxelles |

our last discovery in SFO (and we go each year since ...a long time). This restaurant is in castro (near of one of action center of SFO) but certainly a restaurant for everybody (straigth and gay). The menu is not really large but seems to be tatsy from the 1st look. And he is tatsy.....great food, large plates , great taste: american/californian flavour. THe staff is really kind and full of smile

Good restaurant with delightful garden

By Jon H |

Enjoyed a delicious brunch in the garden. Eggs were served well and service was super. The garden makes it a treat.

Good Eats In The Castro

By Andrew H |

The Castro is not known for good restaurants and this one is an anomaly. The American cuisine is generally very good but some of the eclectic dishes they offer miss the mark -- so stick to what you can understand. A cozy atmosphere and an expansive back patio are a plus here (though the patio has very restricted hours). If you choose the patio, book a time no later than 7 PM so you don't feel rushed. Mind you, this is San Francisco so even the heat lamps won't do if the day is windy. Service is very good and even better if the owner is around (hit or miss). Prices are relatively high for what you get but then, for some strange reason, you wan't mind as if you were in a fable. One of the best places in the Castro.

Dinner

By Robert B |

Disappointingly overpriced! I had the halibut. No flavor. The wine selection not that great. Service was OK. Do not plan on returning.

Delicious food and awesome patio

By big_time_traveller12 |

I visited this restaurant last summer and ate on the patio. It was a big open space and very nice. Food and service were excellent. The only negative of the overall experience was that I noticed that, in the open kitchen area, one of the cooks had his cellphone on food prep area and was playing around on it. Cellphones are breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses, so this was very unappetizing to see. Just glad I saw this on the way out as opposed to on the way in!!!

Fabulous

By Ctrlaltk |

They kindly squeezed our group of 8 in on Sunday evening as we were visiting from overseas and reviews suggested a visit was warranted. We were not disappointed. Everyone agreed that food was delicious and staff were obliging. Recommended.

Cute, quite, intimate place

By toddinparis |

It was my second time to Fable, one of the nicer places in the Castro district. The food was good, not particularly notable. The chef puts odd things on the menu, like jalapeño is sauces where it traditionally is not, so you might need to pay close attention to each item's ingredients. The best part is the tranquil intimacy of the place - only about 10 tables on the inside (the patio was closed as it was too cold on the night we visited). The clientele on this particular night was primarily gay men (one of the few places in the Castro which can still be called gay). A glass of wine was priced at $15, and main courses tend to be in the upper $20 range.

Amazing neighborhood restaurant

By Alan D |

Seasonal menu with great service. Food is American with European influences. Small restaurant, but the patio is a must on nice nights. This is a great place to meet a friend or date. Not recommend for large groups or families. Food is always consistently good. Staff is attentive and knowledgable. I would place this as somewhere between mid range and fine dining. Entrees are between $20-30.

Great brunch in a lively atomosphere

By Frank D |

We had a brunch reservation after the Pride parade. We arrived and sat in the garden, which was absolutely stunning. We enjoyed drinks, including an excellent Bloody Mary, while waiting for our meals. The food was excellent with a wider variety of choices. The vibe was fun and lively, lots of dogs, and groups of people celebrating. Highly recommended!

Great outdoor spot for dining!

By Victoria T |

They make fabulous mimosas! Great atmosphere as outside garden atmosphere. Very unpretentious food too, quite basic but great!

Awesome food

By Dann L |

Some of the best chicken I have had. Son had the short ribs and really enjoyed it. Good portions. The squash appetizer was excellent. Blackberry cobbler too

Solid act: service, ambience and food

By Lian d |

Had dinner with my wife and food was quite good. Starter: braised pork cheeks were really juicy and tasty and tender. Well cooked. Then went for the tuna that was more of a miss even though the fig salad that came with it was very good. The tuna in my opinion was overcooked, which is quite common unfortunately. We finally shared a shortcake , just to see if all the praise coming from the table next to us was well deserved: even though it looked like a scone it was light and delicate and fragrant. Will repeat next time.

Great atmosphere, great food

By KGarySF |

Had a great meal at Fable - the menu is creative and the food delicious. The space, though small, is fun with quirky decoration on the theme. Its a great local find with good food. They are small, though, so make reservations...

A real happiness!!!!

By Stéphanie L |

Go ahead, it’s excellent. Perfect Service filled with kindness. Ultra fresh dishes, exceptional flavors. Real happiness for the taste buds. The patio is superb, green, intimate, pleasant. Happiness!!!!! Thank you.

Magical Night

By VTtraveler4 |

We had a lovely dinner at Fable while on vacation, based on the recommendation of a local friend. We sat in the back garden, which was charming. The service was excellent-attentive, but not intrusive. I had the pork cheeks appetizer and trout entree, and my date had the caprese salad and chicken. All of the food was delicious and portions were just right.

Loved it!

By travelwithpam |

A beautiful warm day in San Francisco today. Sat outside. They have a great wine list & very friendly staff. I had the 3 egg duck omelette with incredible potatoes. Delicious. Make sure you ask for their green sauce on top of the omelette. All shaded outside among their garden. I will definitely go back there again

A Fairytale garden

By Lea G |

The food was really good, the ambiance was enchanting, the clientele alive and enjoying and the service was excellent. What more could you want? I would definitely return on another visit.

Great food within a hidden garden setting

By Matt |

Excellent food and service in a hidden, tropical garden setting. I ate the Grilled 10 oz Pork Chop with Cranberry- Ginger Glaze, which came with butternut squash purée, rainbow chard, paprika pumpkin seeds. It was delicious! Really great food!

Great outside seating

By Jamesrvp |

We came here on a chilly evening but still wanted to sit outside. Luckily they have heaters outside so we were nice and comfy. The service here is excellent and the T-Bone steak was perfect. They also have a nice wine list, plenty of options. Would definitely go here again when in SF

Excellent Surprise

By Ed B |

Only my second review ever, better than expected, but we did go on a recommendation. Extremely nice staff, attentive, great food, simple yet pleasant surroundings. Fair price. Well done!

Fun food in a lively atmosphere

By BobTravelSFO |

Friendly staff and pleasant, lively atmosphere make this a fun place to dine and get good food. The food is well prepared in a contemporary California style.

Great food and service!

By D i |

We had a great lunch outside along the street. Their seating area was top notch with table and wood benches, overhang and planter to block off the street. The service was excellent and we loved the food! We had their spin on NIcoise salad with perfectly cooked tuna.

A good restaurant in the heart of the Castro

By David_P_M1 |

Visited this restaurant for dinner with partner and friend. Limited menu but a good choice. I started with Bartlett Pear Butter Lettuce salad - good sized portion, great flavours. Partner and friend had the steamed mussels we all enjoyed our starters then two of us had the pork chop and the tuna. Both courses were delicious, we sat outside ( when booking you have the option of booking an outside table ) it was a cool October evening but the heaters work a treat and we were all very comfortable. The seating outside is very popular ( not many tables were occupied inside) a small area but designed very well with a running water feature this provides a great ambience. For desert we shared a crisp pear with vanilla ice-cream (pear crumble with ice-cream) again very good. Service was good and we enjoyed our visit - I hear brunch is great there but didn't have enough time in San Francisco to ry it. Will definitely return next time we are here.

Excellent and fun

By rcco97 |

I was visiting San Francisco and was able to catch one of the movies in the Film Noir festival in the Castro. My friends wanted to check out Fable. Like many places in SF, it is a long and thin restaurant. They have a nice winter garden tho, which has heaters so even in a San Francisco summer (or winter) evening, it is bearable! The food was very eclectic and delicious. The wine list was varied and pretty affordable. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu... We did have to wait for our table, but given it was a busy night on the castro, and we were the last seating, this could be expected. Fable provided my most favourite meal of the two week trip to SF.

Dont even bother

By CMB |

Waited 5 mins to be seated despite a worker calling the host Told I could scoff down my meal because her kitchen was closing Almost impossible to find lunch in San Franncisco because they only do set times unlike anywhere else on the planet including NYC

Good food but bad atmosphere

By Enrico |

I went there with my colleagues. The place itself is very narrow and we sat in most inner part. It was cold inside and every time the waiter opened the door I shivered because of the cold air current. I was not hungry so I ordered a the vegan dish and an herbal mint infusion. The infusion was less than I expected. And we had to wait a lot to get what we had ordered, so it became cold. When the vegan dish arrived, it was not bad, but I ate it as fast as I can and same back home. The waiter who greeted us was very gentle; the one who served us was gentle too, he did not pay much attention to us..

Great place in the Castro. Found it on OpenTable. Easy to miss just walking by. Quaint and had great ambiance inside. Looked like it has a nice big patio area further back but didn't go back there. The food was excellent and not very expensive for San Francisco by any means. I had a duck confit dish. Usually that involves a few tiny pieces of shredded duck and a bunch of filler. This was a very good full duck breast. Yum! Staff was great as well. Very recommended!

Lovely spot

The place is so cute, especially if you sit on the garden. We were a group of friends and we all enjoyed what we had, except for my husband whose fish was raw in the middle. I would say the appetizers were better than the mains, but everything was good overall. Great atmosphere!

New years eve

By Klaus F |

We went there yesterday to celebrate the New years eve and last evening on our san francisco holiday. A big disapointment. The Restaurant was as freezing as the food was. there was a 4 course dinner of medium to low quality, with small portions but very expensive compared to the quality offered. We cannot recomend that place at all.

Delicious Food; VERY Friendly Staff; Great Spot;

A 5-minute walk from the Castro Street Muni stop and you're at the Fable Restaurant. Pay close attention, as like us, you may walk right past it. Once inside a subdued-lit, eclectic, intimate interior welcomes you to the friendly staff who greet and seat you. During our visit there was immediate seating without reservation, but truth be told, this was a Wednesday night and not the weekend where I'm sure it's a different story. They have a dining patio that looked very inviting for warm summer evenings (though I'm not quite sure when San Francisco would actually see those). Many members of staff checked on us through the evening (in a good way; not over crowding) and they were very willing to accommodate slight modifications to the menu when dietary concerns were raised. The food is VERY delicious, though in my humble opinion was a little pricy for what you get. (yup I live in the Midwest where plates are big and so is what's on them). Fresh and flavorful is the name of the game here. Now I understand why they left a spoon by my plate for the salmon dish... I made sure to scrape up every last drop of the sauce as best as I could. This is a great spot to come for an intimate celebration or a dinner-for-two. Best of all it's casual dining (yes I hate dressing up just to eat... what's the point?). Definitely check out this spot.

Nice restaurant in the middle of the Castro District of San Fransisco on Castro street. We really enjoyed our meal here in Fable. After two weeks driving around in California, it was certainly one of the more memorable ones. Fresh ingredients and good cooking, nice atmosphere and great service.

Garden of Eatin'

Wonderful hideaway in the Castro district. You are surprised when you continue to go down a hallway and end up in a lovely garden patio setting. Service was excellent and everyone enjoyed their meal. Eclectic menu that satisfied all tastes.

Castro gem

By ChristopherChicago |

A welcome addition to the Castro strip! Friendly and helpful staff who run a tight ship -- reservations were honored down to the minute. A good menu with available wine pairings and excellent desserts. For four of us with starters, entrees and desserts with a total of eight glasses of wine, bill was $250 before tip.

Quaint and delicious!

This small, quaint neighborhood gem has an interesting and delicious menu! The steamed mussels were the best I've ever had, due to the sauce they were in. Great for soaking up with bread afterwards! I also enjoyed the Seared Ahi Tuna Nicoise salad, which had a poached egg on top which took it over the top! I loved that there were fava beans in the salad. I had the corn cobbettes, which were the best corn on the cob I've ever had. The finely shaved fresh parmesan really took this side dish over the top! My friend enjoyed her mac and cheese and grilled asparagus. Efficient, friendly service on a cute outdoor patio.

Excellent food and service

On a whim we stopped here for a quick brunch bite. Took a while to get seated but we had a patio table that (after the heater was turned on) was great. I had an excellent double cheeseburger with awesomely salted fries. My dining partner had a tasty quinoa bowl. The servings are large enough that you could take leftovers home - not that we did! Very friendly service and well worth checking out.

Castro

Went here in a party of 5 prior to going for some drinks in Castro. The food was good but nothing special. The white wine was a sauvignon blanc which was ok. I had the chicken as a main. It was tasty but in my opinion it was very expensive.

Stopped in for Brunch

By sfimporter |

They had a soft opening for brunch that we just happened upon. This was their first and it was on a Saturday. The back patio was not open so we sat at the front bar watching the chefs work. I wasn't sure how I felt about the a la carte breakfast menu - everything was optional. On the one side, this is great for folks who like to pick and choose. On the other - you kind of look at things like "toast" and think $2? Really? But my skepticism was definitely won over by the food. My partner had an amazing scrabble with various meats and cheese. We shared an order of breakfast potatoes that was just perfect - some spice and good onions. I had an order of the most amazing french toast. I think it was vanilla and cinnamon in there. Whatever it was - it's better than anything I've ever made at home. I'll definitely be back to check out dinner. And reservations are available on Open Table, so I love that.

Excellent food, lovely garden

By PeterCounter |

Undistinguished looking from the front, but with a beautiful garden with patio heaters at the rear. Food was really great quality - perfectly cooked and seasoned. We had the stuffed squash blossom to start, just wonderful with homemade ricotta cheese. Then lamb chops and pork chop - great tastes and expertly cooked. Really unexpected quality, friendly service and not overpriced. Highly recommended.

Great Service; Great Food; Great Atmosphere

Great Service; Great Food; Great Atmosphere. Eating in the semi-enclosed patio you'd never know that you were outside. The food & presentation were superb ! We had the Petrale Sole (stuffed with crab meat) and the Vegan Lasagna and couldn't have been more satisfied with our meals. Definitely will be back when we visit the Castro again !

Great place!

So good we had lunch here twice. On the first occasion we were initially seated inside before we noticed the garden and moved outdoors. We visited in January but the garden/patio is sheltered from the elements and has heating and blankets. The food on both occasions was very good and we enjoyed the inventive combinations which were on offer. We were disappointed that there was no liquor license so we couldn't have our usually gin and tonic aperitif but happily tried a sparkling Californian Rose. The staff were charming and added to the great atmosphere of the place.

Amazing Dinner

By Leslie M |

On our last night in San Francisco, my husband and I went to Fable for dinner. We shared the pork cheek appetizer which was absolutely delicious. The meat was so juicy and perfectly cooked and had great flavor. For dinner I got the rabbit cooked 2 ways - buttermilk fried and gumbo and my husband got steak with broccoli rabe and potatoes. We split 2 sides - onion rings and brussel sprouts. I have never had such great tasting food! The brussel sprouts were served with blue cheese and grapes and I could not stop eating them! The rabbit was cooked perfectly and the onion rings went perfectly with the steak. We did not have room for dessert, but the coconut chocolate cake looked absolutely delicious! If you are in Castro and need a great place to eat - don't miss out on Fable!

We just made this spot just in time! They close the kitchen at 2pm - what a beautiful place. We got seated in the sun in the courtyard by a more than helpful gentleman who had told us to choose our meals whilst waiting to be seated speeding up the whole process! Food was delicious! Lovely experience!

Fantastic food and service

The place was recommended by our hotel and lived up to our expectations! Great friendly service, super creative food. We were seated at the bar and loved watching the chef prepare our meal :) highly recommend it!!

One of the, if not THE, best place to eat in Castro

By Atkinstogram |

We stayed at an AirBnB in the Castro, and the owner mentioned this place. We popped down the night of the Castro Street Fair, so as they were sweeping the glitter up off the streets, we had a very quiet evening on the rear terrace. The food was utterly gorgeous. One of the standout places we ate in all of California, and exceptional value for money too. Our server was wonderful - happy to recommend dishes to us, and recommended a GORGEOUS wine to go with our pot roast main. Wouldn't have picked it whilst a Cab was available, but it paired perfectly. On top of the pot roast that was good enough to be one Nana made, we started with some pork cheeks that were amazing. Soft, unctuous, and incredibly moreish, if it's on the menu, HAVE IT. Overall, fantastic food, fantastic service, and a very reasonable price. Of all the places we ate in San Francisco, this is the one we want to return to.

Amazing quinoa bowl and sausage fennel omelette

By Mooma |

We dropped into Fable and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table at 1 p.m. on a Sunday with no reservation. The reception was warm and friendly. It was a chilly day so the waiter brought us some blankets when he saw us shivering. The quinoa bowl was simply amazing - and the fennel and sausage omelette was also delicious.

Destination Restaurant in the Castro

By rmajor |

Jon Hearnsberger left the Anchor Oyster Bar as chef, much to the despair of a lot of Castro restaurant-goers. Rejoice! He's back with his own place, Fable (ironically, across the street from the Anchor). If you can score a table, you will be rewarded. Everything on the menu is great. Ask for a blindfold and jab your finger anywhere on the menu -- voila! You'll be happy. (But hope that you get some of Jon's mac ' n' cheese.) I have seen reviews that complain about the wait time -- hey gang, that's the sign of a great restaurant! There are plenty of SF restaurants with tables aplenty -- and there's a good reason for that. Take friends and a good attitude and you'll be smiling, and your tummy will love you for it. The prices are reasonable, the service friendly and knowledgeable, and Jon is around to see that the train runs on time. We're glad he's back!!

Delicious food and superlative service

By nickswlon |

I dined here with a friend on my recent visit to San Francisco and was blown away by the quality of the food. However, the service was particularly excellent -the best I’ve had on my holiday. Thankyou to Marda and everyone else who made us feel so welcome from the moment we walked through the door.
