Salubrious Patio Dining and Excellent Food!

By Ken H |

We were a party of 8 celebrating a co-worker who was moving to a different city. We sat in the happily secluded, capacious outdoor patio, shielded from the sun by large umbrellas, and its relaxed ambience could not have been better. The breakfast/lunch menu is quite varied and large, but I was tempted by the heirloom tomato flatbread, which turned out to be similar to a square pizza, although without a crisp/thick crust. The heirloom tomatoes sitting in just the right amount of mozzarella and pesto made a scrumptious lunch, and the house iced tea is out of this world. Our server could not have been more pleasant, although I thought perhaps a bit too much time elapsed between the time he brought our ordered beverages and came back to take our entree orders. However, he could not have been more gracious to our party, offering to take photos after our meal was done. I will return to this lovely Mission Hills establishment.

Yummmm!

What a great lunch we had! The food was so delicious and fresh. Everything tastes so awesome! We would definitely come back here again.

Very good farm-to-table

By BSchug |

Very good farm-to-table restaurant. My wife and I enjoyed dinner here on a Monday evening. The place was not crowded, but did have several tables occupied - it was a Monday. The stuffed quail entrée was excellent, service was very good, and the beer and wine selections were as well. The décor was nice - wood floors and walls, nicely appointed. The noise level was low, perfect for conversation. We would definitely return.

THE most succulent chicken and fabulous by the glass wines!

Great ambiance! Fabulous vibe with great and friendly service! Ordered a green salad with a side of chicken! Chicken was succulent with great flavor. Loved the experience and will definitely be coming back.

Creative Options for Breakfast or Lunch

By diningexpert1 |

Located in heart of Mission Hills, FB offers a relaxing setting with creative decor as well as varied breakfast and lunch menu. Service was prompt and attentive. Breakfast drinks, pancakes, French toast, and omelets are featured as well as soups, salads, and sandwiches. The grapefruit mimosa was a hit. The French toast flight was delicious and generous in size-took 1/2 home. Favorite was the cream filled strawberry. The turkey club was also delish. On a second visit in one week, we tried new options. The natural ham omelet was the most perfect omelet-light, fluffy, and all golden yellow. The Bottega Stack was a big hit. The yogurt and granola was generous and tasty. Kid's menu with crayons. Neat upbeat decor, friendly service. May be our new fav breakfast spot.

Great quality breakfast

I really enjoyed Farmer’s Bottega! The Mexican Scramble was really good as was the hot chocolate. My entire family thought the quality of food was excellent.

Great Birthday Dinner Place

By Nancy L |

12 friends ate dinner here last night to celebrate 3 birthdays. It turned out to be a great choice. Food and service were excellent. The menu was so interesting it was hard to make a choice. Fortunately, with so many of us, we sampled off each others' plates and got a wide selection of tastes. I'd never had fried green tomatoes before. The appetizer had 3 slices on the plate (maybe a few more would have been nice?), and they had a very crisp crust and tasty sauces. Other appetizers tried were artichoke hearts (best I've had), meatballs (richly flavored sauce) and very fine mussels. For entrees, I had the oxtail ravioli which was a generous size with a delicate yet deep carmelized onion sauce. Others had boar rizotto, lamb rack, pork, and buffalo. All were tender, and delicious. It was a great experience. We'll return.

My wife & I have now eaten here 3 times, twice for dinner and once for breakfast. All three meals were excellent. For our anniversary dinner I had the short ribs, which were fork tender and flavorful, and she had the buffalo steak, which was also very tender and good. We've also had, and would recommend, a wild boar sausage risotto and ox tail ravioli. The burnt carrot salad is wonderful and different, the kale salad is also very good. We also have enjoyed 'jars' of eggplant caponata & tomato chutney with burrata (served with good bread). At breakfast we loved the chili relleno omelet & the blue crab benedict. The service has also been quite good. We enjoy eating on their patio which is pleasant and quieter than inside. My only complaint is that both times we have ordered wine it has taken WAY too long to arrive, apparently because only one person is allowed to fetch wine from their cellar.

First time

Ordered hallibut and rissoto.. The rissoto was undercooked and the frish was dry. Capuccino was sort of Ok.

Saturday morning brunch for 7 including kids, was tasty! Very busy morning, the wait staff kept hopping. Interior design, trendy farm industrial. Lots of menu temptations, I was very happy with eggs benedict New Orleans style. Overheard several aaaahhs over the bacon.

We sat outside on a cool night in San Diego, the heaters were blasted and it was very quaint , to eat under the stars . Food was good , but not the wow factor . Still a very enjoyable night , and the wine was great .

Superb food and service

By Grace A |

I recommend this place to everyone in Mission Hills/Hillcrest area. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, they never disappoint. Happy Hour is really great too, if you want to try a whole bunch of small plates. I like the kale salad, quail for dinner, and burnt carrots salad.

a good surprise

By Claude7592 |

it was a good moment the waiter was very nice and fast the dinner and we really enjoyed the meal green tomatoes fried and the best was FENNEL SAUSAGE CAVATELLI - tomato chutney + garlic + herbed goat cheese + wild arugula just so good I will go back

Sunday Brunch

By SDjsb |

Overall, a positive experience. Our first visit. 9:30 am on a Sunday, ample on-street parking within a block, quite full but seated immediately. Walkways between tables a bit cozy. Conversational noise level pretty energetic. Families with young children, couples, small groups, a few singles. Good coffee. Eclectic menu. I had Breakfast Burrito, tasty and not excessively large (I was able to finish it all). Flavoring was mellow; I would have preferred a bit more zing. Excellent tomatillo sauce. Companion had the Meatloaf Hash, very tasty and well-spiced. Couldn't finish it all. I could see the kitchen counter and staff obviously was making a distinct effort to get food to the table as soon as it was ready. Downsides: 30 minutes from ordering to receipt of food. And it took three tries to get coffees refreshed; finally snagged a busboy. Might well visit again but not an instant fave.

Great Atmosphere, Food and Customer Service.

Cool dining experience for 6 first timers and we will go back! All of us enjoyed our selections. Burrata, Bruchetta, Mussels/Clams, Pork Chop, Pizza and more!

OUTSTANDING Farm to Table

By J J K |

Simply terrific. People all around me were raving. Farmers’ Bottega is great. Tray Farmer to Table on Clairemont Dr too. Serve as a server is great!! If you cat hit before 6:00 o’clock you’ll get happy hour!!’ Wahoo!! Everything is good. I’m vegetarian and loved it. Meat eater friends did too.

Well, worth a repeat visit!

By Tom |

Fresh farm to table restaurant, everything homemade, including the granola and strawberry yogurt. We were in the area for three days, came here twice and wish we had the opportunity to come for lunch and or dinner!

Excellent breakfast.... but

By MapleRidge2 |

We just tried this new restaurant and found the food outstanding: fresh ingredients and tasty combinations in the omelettes, potatoes fresh and cooked perfectly and seasoned modestly to bring out the flavor and freshness. Excellent hot strong coffee and fresh juice. The atmosphere is rustic and comfortable, the table we had was a nice size for two and though the acoustics are a little loud, nothing to complain about. But... the service was a little deficient. Our waiter though pleasant and well intentioned seemed a bit overwhelmed by the crowd. (The restaurant was nearly full when we arrived.) The service by no means disturbed the quality of the food, or interfered with our overall experience but I mention it because it should be improved to the level of the food by perhaps more careful management. We will be back.

Yum!

By PJCoastToCoast |

Great place, great menu! Just a great experience all around, great service. It's a bit small and probably has a long wait on weekends, but worth the wait!

Neat menu -Good HH

By doctoyou |

Checked out the menu as we were driving by. Looked enticing. Neat rustic atmosphere. We were going to do Happy Hour (avail 7days a week)inside and then move outside but we just enjoyed inside -even with our little one, so we stayed out the whole time. Good app and beer selection at HH but only well drinks and not their neat bar menu discounted. Food came out quickly and hot. All plates had a nice presentation. The downer was the gnocchi. We went vegetarian and the pasta was tough (vs the melt in your mouth my wife loves)and the sauce thick and dull. We walked in but it was early on a Sat but as it was getting busier as we left I can see a reservation would be wise.

delicious quality food

By cectxhst |

Cannot say enough about this place. The food is delicious and fresh and worth every penny. I have not had anything I didn't like. My personal favorite is the turkey breast sandwich (comes with cheese, homemade sourdough or wheat bread, bacon, avocado, tomato) with a side salad. breakfast is also very good, too - fresh eggs, homemade toast, bacon, homemade potatoes, fresh squeezed orange juice. Also the ratatouille lasagna that they have had on their dinner menu n the past (now it's a ratatouille risotto) is quite delicious - fresh veggies, flavorful sauce. great place for vegetarians.

Our family of 8 dined here for Thanksgiving Dinner in 2018 - Rating 3.5 stars

By Gail N |

This pleasant neighborhood bistro has a casual ambiance and a relaxed decor. The food is excellent, delicious, well prepared with high quality ingredients. However, for this Thanksgiving Dinner, the portions were stingy. The turkey plate had one thin slice of turkey (which was delicious), but one slice is not really up to par. The rest of the plate consisted of about 4-5 small tasty green beans, a rounded tablespoon of excellent cranberry sauce, about 3 tablespoons of so-so mashed potatoes sprinkled with a level tablespoon of tasteless corn niblets. The stuffing was average and most of us did not eat it, but the gravy was very good, a small portion poured over the turkey which sat atop the stuffing. We purchased 7 plates of the extra vegetable (3 fingerling potatoes, 3 roasted brussell sprouts, and one of the broccolini. These were all outstanding. The children's burger was generous and tasty. The pork chop was large, tasty and tender, and the butternut squash ravioli with brown butter and sage was excellent and the portion average. The baby kale appetizer was very good but there was really no sweet and sour pumpkin to speak of, a few tiny specks of something orange were evident. It also contained bacon which was really great except it was not mentioned on the menu and surprised the vegetarian who order it. The pumpkin soup was a very small cup and was tasty. The burnt carrot appetizer did not have any avocado or feta. The pecan pie was average but the crust was not very good. This was the only dish which was a normal sized portion. The wine pairing was one of the best parts of the meal, good quality and above average selections. The main server was not very welcoming. The other wait people were much more pleasant. The 20% added gratuity was not mentioned on the menu. Being a holiday, this seemed like a reasonable tip but having it included resulted in the main wait person not needing to make an extra effort. So we would say the service was average. One guest called her "snippy". In summary, the food was excellent overall even though the menu was not accurate. The service was fair. The ambiance was good. But the skimpy portion sizes were definitely unacceptable. After all, turkey is one of the most inexpensive meals. So three stars is not quite right, 3.5 is more accurate. Will we return next year? Sadly, no. The quest for the best place for Thanksgiving Dinner in San Diego continues.

Can't wait to go back!

By etalius |

I had lunch there last weekend with a friend. There are several restaurants in the area, but we chose this one because it seemed less hectic than a couple of the others we considered. Though there were a lot of people there, it was not too noisy, and the atmosphere was relaxing. The lunch menu had a number of salads and sandwiches, some vegetarian options and some gluten-free options. We chose the portobello sandwich with cilantro hummus and herbed goat cheese, and the baby kale salad with butternut squash, manchego, and spiced caramelized pecans. Both were delicious, with exceptionally fresh and flavorful ingredients. I should add that the prices were extremely reasonable!

New King of San Diego Breakfasts

By Ricardo C |

The first time I drove by, it looked like an upscale foodie place. You know, delicious, a bit pricey and perhaps a predictably interesting menu that includes chilaquiles, the newest craze that rarely hits the highs of the authentic and delicious Mexican dish. About a week later, we went to try it and sure enough, chilaquiles. However, as I read the description carefully I noticed that the details hinted that perhaps this was, at last, the real deal. Without further thought, I ordered them with both red and green sauce so I could test both. After my first bite, I paused, looked at my breakfast mate across the table and said, "The owner is from Mexico". I asked the waiter and he pointed to a man waiting another table, "That's him". Sure enough, he's a longtime restauranteur from Guanajuato and he, at last, has delivered real, absolutely delicious chilaquiles to San Diego. FOR GOODNESS' SAKES TRY THEM. P.S. I have returned several times now with dozens of people and everything else is delicious too. I have heard raves about the eggs benedict with rib meat and the huevos rancheros.

Your Own Backyard Feel

By ZephyrFreeway |

Good setting. Has a "tucked away" feel. Very casual and with mason jars for water. You can eat in front or in the back which feels like your own backyard. Parking is a challenge and you may have to walk several blocks. Our service was exceptional for dinner. The appetizers were sensational: grilled octopus and fried green tomatoes...very fresh and something new. Reasonably priced wine and a good selection. The entrees were marginal except for the braised ribs. The polenta was tough...tasted reheated. The seabass was pricey and in squares as though it came out of a box...tasted fishy, dry and had very little sauce with it. The pasta with seafood had no sauce and was ok. So come here for appetizers and wine and go someplace else for dinner.

Breakfast place in Hillcrest, San Diego

By Deena S |

Enjoyed breakfast overall at this place. Food was good, however, eggs not 100% hot though. The room was pleasant. The gal seating us though made it a hassle to get a seat that we accepted. The outside patio was too cold that morning even with heaters. The waiter was very good and helpful.

Looooove this place!

By cbgonzalez |

Today I had the chance to give a "bocao" (spanish for "bite") to an amazing restaurant...Farmer's Brottega. This is such a great place. The waiters were so lovely and attentive. The food was delicious! Their concept is fresh from the farm, straight to your table. I had the turkey sandwich. This had turkey beast, tomatoes, avocado, and cheese. SOOOO YUMMY!!!! I saw they also have a breakfast menu. That should be interesting. You'll enjoy it if you have the chance to visit. Bon appettit!

Fresh

By OklahomaMomOf3 |

But kinda slow, though very friendly, service on this Sunday around brunch time. Guess that should be expected. Food was good, lots of variety. The truffle potatoes with arugula were well worth the substitution upcharge! Inside decor is fun industrial.

Wonderful new restaurant

By Sallyrothfus |

Great ambiance, excellent food. A delightful patio if you like to eat outside. Also a great place for happy hour.

Very Different Menu

By Dawn F |

This was a good restaurant with a flair for the unusual. The ingredients are fresh. Typical dishes include bison, oxtail, and quail. We sat in the garden in the back alley - it was charming.

Everyday Neighborhood Eatery

By HalPoway |

A pleasant enough neighborhood place. I can't recommend the mahi mahi sandwich not because the ingredients, if eaten together, weren't delicious. It's just that one can't eat the sandwich as prepared because everything in it - fish, lettuce, tomato, avocado, spicy sauce - will fall out of the soft roll soggy from the sauce no matter how you try to hold it. This is a condemnation of every sandwich in every eatery that tries to heap numerous ingredients onto a roll or whatever without thinking of how one is supposed to pick it up and eat it. This particular "sandwich" would be best served in small bites that can be picked up with a fork. That's how I cut up my sandwich and ate it - not altogether a great experience.

Yummy local breakfast

By Eric M |

Farmer's Bottega serves throughout the day though I was only able to visit for breakfast. The brie and prosciutto frittata was made to order, ample, and delicious. Fruit is available instead of potatoes which ups the health quotient a bit. The coffee was hot and rich. The reason for four stars instead of five is that the service was a bit indifferent. Should i have to ask for butter for my toast or a second cup of coffee? Aside from that blip, it was an excellent, relaxed breakfast.

Good Food Solid Value

By No B |

Farmer's Bottega offers an extensive menu selection at BLD.Good salads, lots of tasty sandwiches, meats, fish and they stock lots of interesting beer and wine. ]The Baja Benedict (they offer eight different benedicts, at breakfast and lunch) is killer being Mexican white shrimp over havarti-cheddar, mascarpone grits, and hollandaise sauce.

Good breakfast spot

By cedric09 |

Open all day, but especially nice if you are looking for a well prepared breakfast that features local ingredients. Atmosphere is casual, service is efficient and prices are reasonable for the area.

Farm to Table with a Smile

By Glib C |

Can't say enough good things about this place. The food was phenomenal, we were sat immediately (not sure if that was just luck, but for a party of 6 it was a God send), drinks came promptly, and the staff was eccentric and friendly. Absolutely would come here again and suggest anyone else to do the same.

Happy New Place!

By magicraider |

We had our New Years Dinner here. The Prix fix menu was very good-but a few options were gone by the time we ordered. Very disappointed in missing out. Eat dish we had was very good--cooked well, seasoned well, and fresh ingredients. The Service was pretty good though they had to ask for more water.

Yeh, we have a winner in the “hood”

By bbahama |

By wife and I have shared a flatbread and a great grilled Caesar Salad take out and enjoyed a very good salad, mussels, and pastas dinner this week. The location was completely rework and has an attractive faux rural feel with a friendly staff and a very approachable menu. I could have ordered more than 50% of the menu items to try, which is not my experience with new places. We had excellent service and will go back.

Great Menu, Hard to Choose a Dish!

By Vacationers62 |

This restaurant has a great breakfast/lunch/dinner menu! Breakfast is served until 3 p.m., making it really hard to choose a dish! I had the pork belly tacos, but in retrospect I wish I had ordered the french toast sampler, which let you choose 3 types of french toast on your dish! The tacos were good, but small, and one of them had a big piece of inedible pork skin. My friends had sandwiches which looked delicious. Theirs came with house cut fries, which they shared with me, YUM! I had an iced chai latte which was refreshing. They also serve beer and wine.

Yum!

By TravelBoomerang |

Great food and coffee! We decided to try the Farmer's Bottega for breakfast on a our day in San Diego - what a great way to start off our trip! The food and coffee were top notch. Great service, too! Would definitely try for dinner.

It was just "ok"...

By Joel B |

Food was average, service was good one time, very bad the next (I've gone 3 times with friends). I probably won't be back.

Superb Breakfast in a stylish venue

By JustinPetersen |

You know when you walk a place and you can hear the noise inside, this is what initially attracted me to the place, I knew where it was on the map, but that's what got me through the door. Service was fast, waiting staff were talking among themselves but the minute I walked through that door they served me and had me seated and menu to me within seconds. After a couple of minutes, I placed my order and in about another five minutes (in about the time it takes to send two big-ish Facebook messages) my breakfast was on my table, freshly cooked, and ready to go. Two people served me and all they could do was smile and be friendly, polite and courteous, now for the food. It was fresh, it's a weird feeling but you can tell they've made the extra effort, cooked to an ideal temperature was really tasty and just the right size and for the price ideal. The venue is gorgeous, loved the decor, very historical with a stylish vibe, I'm calling this a little gem of a place to have in a city like this, so go check it out, for any meal of the day!

AWFUL SERVICE

By Corah |

It took about 50 minutes for us to get our appetizer, for dinner we ordered salads but didn’t get them for over an hour (then the salad was missing some of the ingredients). During this whole time we did not get a single refill or an offer to freshen our drinks. I eventually walked to the bar to get a refill of water then the manager came by to advise the kitchen was backed up. The server never asked us how the meal was after it was delivered for us to even say anything. The appetizer (bison tartar) had too many capers to enjoy and the kale salad was just sad. I didn’t touch my salad yet the waiter and manager did nothing - POOR SERVICE!!! They should really train their staff to communicate with customers to ensure a positive experience however it was clear they just didn’t care.

Great place for dinner and drinks

By ACJai |

Met up with friends for dinner and drinks on a thursday night. Sat at the bar and even with all the charger fans watching a game it was a great place to eat. Shared all our dishes but the branzino and buffalo filet was excellent. great choices on wine. Worth the trip from north county. love to see more places like this in north county.

Cozy Farm-to-Table Brunch Spot in Mission Hills

By GlobalSonderist |

We stopped in for brunch and had a really nice time! We were seated on the back patio, which is set up inside a charming little greenhouse. It was a bit chilly when we arrived, but they turned on the heat lamps, and it quickly became perfectly cozy. Our server, Gabriel, was kind, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our visit. For brunch, I usually lean more savory, but today a little sweetness was calling my name, so I decided to try the Monte Cristo. I’m glad I did—it was really good, with the perfect sweet and savory balance. That said, it was definitely on the rich side, and I could only make it through half. My husband ordered the Bottega Stack and thought it was good but fairly average overall. The menu features a lot of fresh, farm-to-table inspired options, and there are plenty of dishes we still want to try from both the brunch and dinner menus. Overall, it’s a cozy spot with a great atmosphere, friendly service, and a menu worth exploring—solid 4/5 and we’ll definitely be back!

Great food, great service

By Anne G |

On a recommendation of a place we stayed at we visited this restaurant. We got seated real quick and had a hard time deciding what to get off the menu. As I'm a vegetarian, our server Matthew (who was super friendly and hulpful the entire time we were there) gave me some advice as to what to get or what could be made into a vegetarian dish. The food is of absolute good quality and thanks to Matthew, our overall experience was amazing. Highly recommend trying this place!

delicious farm to table food

By cectxhst |

we liked this restaurant so much on our four-day trip to san diego that we went three times! first time for lunch we had the spinach salad and turkey sandwich w/salad. both were excellent - spinach salad had blueberries, toasted pecans, goat cheese, and sliced pears with a light dressing. sandwich had fresh thick sliced turkey, avocado, cheese, tomato, and toasted fresh wheat bread. the next times we went we had the fennel sausage and vegetable ratatouille -- both were great, too. everything was very fresh and had nice flavor profiles -- nothing too busy or harsh. the patio out back was nice -- a little cool in the early evening, but they do have outdoor heaters. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for fresh, local food that is not processed. it is heavy on meat items, but there are vegetarian options. Our only disappointment was that we weren't able to make it back for brunch!

Nice, cozy neighborhood restaurant

By ErinP27 |

My boyfriend and I met a friend here for dinner and had a great time. The place is very cute and has a cozy neighborhood feel. The service was great the entire night. I love the décor of the farm to table concept. The food was wonderful. Our server recommended the hearts of artichoke appetizers which were great and we had the grilled octopus which was delicious too. For an entrée I had the Kurobuta pork chop served with roasted corn mashed potatoes and dried apricot white balsamic reduction for $29 dollars. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon | Castoro Cellars, Paso Robles was a great choice for $34 a bottle. I would definitely go back to this restaurant. We had a reservations for 6:30 but around 8:00 it gets a bit busier and a bit louder but it's still a nice relaxed environment. There is street parking if you can find it.

Great Meal

By jamieoTN |

I had supper here with friends and it was fantastic. I had a fennel sausage flatbread which was delicious. As an appetizer we had artichoke hearts with a balsamic reduction and fresh buffalo mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto with a bit of apricot jam. I will definitely go back. The service was good and prompt and the food was excellent. It is well worth the price.

Delicious Food, Warm Atmosphere, Great Service

By Katy Z |

My husband and I enjoyed dinner at Farmer's Bottega during a vacation to San Diego. Our server was very helpful and efficient. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant was warm and inviting. It was rather loud with a full house but the large party we were seated next to may have contributed. The buffalo steak and duck confit we ordered were very good but the artichoke appetizer was the best artichokes I have ever had. Holy cow! It's a must try. They were also accommodating to our food sensitivities. Highly recommend!

Delicious food

By John G |

Easily the best testing food we've had in San Diego so far. Service was a little slow but so friendly that we didn't really mind. Great atmosphere and again, the food was delicious.

Rough-hewn Finesse

By groupwww |

A wonderful neighborhood restaurant that isn't defined by its overproduced decor. The menu is not fussy either and the flavors are clean and unmuddied; really taste like they just came fresh from a farm. This is a great place to stop when you're in Mission Hills and have had any luck finding parking. It's a have-a-long-lunch-and-chat kind of place where they cheerfully refill your drink. I'm thinking it's the perfect place to meet for Sunday brunch. The back patio is shady and feels like a comfy, rustic backyard. I'm ready to go back!

Great place, great food, great service

By Guillermo G |

I love this place, the food is great, the service is great and the atmosphere is very enjoyable. I have been there for brunch and lunch, always a good experience, they do have a patio in the back which is very cute and during a nice weather day it is just a treat.

Really great food at a not terrible price

By ALLSLC |

Friends from the area brought me here saying it was good food sourced locally. Service was attentive. Patio seating was nice. Lots of people had their dogs with them. I had a the artichoke ravioli with olives and tomatoes--it was nicely done, appropriately sized meal. We then had the bread pudding of the season which was an oreo cookie flavor. It was good but not earth shattering. I would definitely go back, there was lots on the menu I wanted to try.

Fantastic food and a beautiful rehearsal dinner!

By jeanandaaron |

We have eaten here several times and always had fantastic food, great service, and enjoyed our meals at Farmers Bottega. We also recently held our rehearsal dinner here, and had a great experience. Leila made the whole reservation process very easy and she was very responsive to our questions. The patio was a great spot for our group - nicely lit, quiet enough that everyone could talk, and big enough that we were separated from other groups. As always, the food was fantastic, and our server took was very attentive and took great care of our group, and they printed out very nice custom menus for us. We're definitely looking forward to going back!

Fresh food and fun place

By tahoeed |

We've been to a weekend brunch and a weekday lunch at Farmer's Bottega and both times we've found the food to be fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented. We've had various salads there and a egg dish or two. Couldn't be happier with the service and ambiance. There is also an outside back patio that is dog friendly and has heaters for cool days. Lovely wine list and very reasonable prices considering the quality.

Good food and large portions

By venicegirl05 |

Went for breakfast at Farmer's Bottega. They had a wide range of selections of egg dishes as well pancakes and french toast. Highly recommend the french toast if you like sweets in the morning. Omelets are good as well. Bar is open in the morning for Bloody Mary and such. Parking in this area is iffy. Street parking only.

Excellent breakfast

By Potomac_11 |

We very much enjoyed our breakfast here, especially the French toast. Scrambled eggs also very good. Nice environment, good coffee.

You have to be VERY patient

By SimeyTravels |

Four stars for the food. One star for the horrible, non-existent service. Seriously, we went for breakfast at around 9:30 on a Tuesday morning. We sat on the patio (we had the beagles with us), and there were only two other tables occupied when we got there, though one of the groups was wrapping up. Our waiter followed us to our table, and then promptly disappeared for over five minutes. We ordered drinks - coffee for him, dirty chai for me - and those didn't show up for another seven or eight minutes. He dropped our drinks off but then scampered away before we could say that we were ready to place our order. I kid you not - it took our waiter another five minutes to come back to our table. I ordered the meatloaf hash, with eggs over medium and wheat toast. My husband ordered the Bottega stack, and an order of the spicy glazed applewood bacon for us to share. And before he could run off again, we ordered another round of drinks (having finished everything while we were waiting for him to come back). Right after we finally placed our order, a large group of 8 showed up and sat down at the table next to us. I mention this only to point out that they arrived after us, ordered after us, yet managed to get their food before us. Our second round of drinks arrived, and I went to take a sip, only to find that the drink was cool. Not cold, but definitely not hot at all. I sighed internally but didn't say anything to my husband. He took a sip of his coffee, and said, "It's not hot." We waited several more minutes to flag our waiter down to tell him that the hot drinks he brought us were not hot. Off he went to remake them. (Note, if you order the dirty chai, or a regular chai be sure to stir very well before drinking. They use a powder, and it clumps up at the bottom of the cup.) Time from our orders being placed to the time that it was set in front of us: 28 minutes. Meanwhile, the party of 8 had already tucked in to their meals, having ordered several minutes after us. The patio at that point was just us and that party, and my husband reported that the main dining room wasn't busy or packed at all (he had gone in to wash his hands). I will admit that the food was delicious. The hash was well cooked and served with lightly sauteed spinach and roasted potatoes. The three eggs were undercooked and a bit plain, so I didn't eat much of them. The toast was crispy and lightly buttered, but I would've liked some jelly or preserves to go with it. Clearly, I had no luck getting that from our waiter. The bacon was okay, but not worth the $6 price tag. It was more messy than delicious. My husband loved his Bottega Stack, as well. He said the flavors were really good, but that it was kind of difficult to eat (fried tortillas stacked on top of each other, with layers of chorizo, beans, and vegetables in between). He was full when he was done, and said that he'd order it again. The food and the outdoor space are the only reason I'm giving two stars. I just can't understand why it took so long to serve a party of two during a lull on a Tuesday morning. And I definitely do not appreciate the waiter disappearing on us for long stretches of time. He didn't even apologize for bringing us two tepid drinks! To give you some perspective: we had paid for 2-hour parking. I had thought at that time that it was excessive, but it turns out that we went over by 3 minutes because of the glacier-like speed with which the staff moved.

Melt in your mouth goodness

By Cora W |

The burrata and artichoke appetizer was wonderful. The artichoke was the best I've had to date. I had the swordfish and shrimp with risotto dinner, and my husband had the beef ribs. My dinner was amazing, and my husband's ribs just melted in your mouth. Didn't have room for dessert, but they looked good.

Fresh, Delicious Dinning

By Cathy D |

Four of us came to this highly recommended restaurant and we had a great dinning experience. We sat out back and were served by Matthew. We used the Date Night Wednesday and had more than enough food at a very reasonable price. Matthew was very gracious and helpful.

Great vibes

By Ali Van D |

I had brunch here and loved the look of the place, it's very Instagrammable! They do a lot of locally sourced things and farm to table, which is great. The food is fresh and delicious, a little pricey, but great quality.

A swing and a miss

By halo_NYC |

Went here for my husband's birthday last Saturday night. We'd made reservations on Open Table for 9pm. We arrived to the restaurant at our scheduled time and there was NO ONE in the restaurant. The waiter/owner (?) was waiting for us at the door and we felt rushed from the moment we walked in. We'd brought a bottle of wine and he went on to open it without disclosing the corkage fee. He didn't ask if we wanted a cocktail or pre-dinner drink - we always do. Without giving us time to even read the menu he wanted our appetizer order and so we ordered what he recommended. He went to the kitchen to put in the order and returned asking what I wanted for dinner. I said "oh not sure yet" and his response was "hurry up and decide, the kitchen is closing soon". If you don't want to stay open for customers eating at 9pm, then don't have that time slot open and available on Open Table. How were we supposed to know the restaurant would be completely DEAD at 9pm. Still not knowing what to order and being rushed he recommended the bison steak for me (which wasn't on the menu) and i agreed to that. Again, he didn't tell me the cost and once the bill came it was $40! It had quite a bit of gristle. Definitely not Cowboy Star quality -- not that I expected it to be but for the price it should've been better... Being my husband's birthday, he wasn't even allowed to order dessert. The waiter/owner brought out a slice of lemon cake and that was that. They were ready to get us out of there. Neither of us were overly thrilled with our food... my husband ordered the pork belly appetizer which he swears is the same one he buys from Trader Joes. He also got the short rib which was very fatty. We ended up leaving the restaurant with over half our wine left. Not the nice evening we had in mind. To top it off the bill was $170 before tip!! 2 appetizers, 2 entrees plus $20 corkage. I won't waste my time returning here.

Superb Restaurant

By TheAnvil |

High end Dining may be found here. Romantic ambience abounds. What makes this place worth a visit is the food. Both of our dishes were exquisite. Best short ribs I have ever had. Very much worth a visit!

Not Worth the Money

By Fearless67099098293 |

The food was good, but very expensive for what it is. We won't be going back there again. Our breakfast for two people came to over $70: $23 for pancakes, eggs and bacon. $5 for one pancake $5 for one cup of drip coffee $2 for Oat Milk rather than milk/creamer for coffee

I ate breadkfast here two times and enjoyed it every time, great food, nice ambiance and pleasant servers.

Great meal

By Scooter12309 |

we had a group of 8 and they sat us on the back patio. Great presentation of my dinner and the drinks were good too.

Amazing. Great food, great service... How have we missed this place in the past?

By smurer2016 |

Loved it. Farm fresh food. Delicious flavors. My wife loved the house-made yogurt, while I enjoyed the Stay Fit omelet. Plenty of healthy options, and decadent options (Reese's Peanut Butter Pancakes with Ice Cream). Great service and ambiance. We were there for breakfast. It was easy to grab a table at 9:00 a.m. On a weekday.

Great find!

By KoloheChicago |

Outstanding food. We had the bison tenderloin and the bison ribs. For appetizers we had the fried green tomatoes. Definitely try the molten chocolate cake if you have the room. Excellent little place.

Great ambiance, good food.

By JenniferEllen1107 |

Our dinner at Farmer's Bottega was very good. My husband loved the porkbelly tacos; the black and white seafood pasta was excellent. The pecan pie was delicious as well. The restaurant was busy, and the service was slow, but the ambiance is terrific, so we didn't really mind having to wait a while for our check!

Great every time !

By AlbertoMay |

Really nice group of waiters are ready for anything you need ! Bloody mary's are fantastic and they have a good selection of tequilas. Weekends it gets really full so be ready to wait 30 min, its worth waiting for the outside back patio. Breakfast was amazing this last saturday, mexican style.

Poor service

By Daved F |

Hostile and confused reception. Slow and impersonal. Second time we ate here. The first was not as bad. The food was boring and not that tasty.

Great food, good ambience

By Shruti t |

Loved the food, great looks n taste. Rustic interiors great. Service is OK. Payed 5 for parking behind the restaurant.

Good gluten free options - and outdoor seating in the back!

By Katelyn T |

We sat in the outdoor patio area since we had a dog. It was a lovely little patio under the trees. I got the gluten free flatbread and it was yummy.

Lovely meal!

By maringfro |

This restaurant has been in Mission Hills for 4 years already but I didn't know about it. A friend recommended we go there and I was very pleased with this choice. I had the lamb Ragu pappardelle which was very tasty. I was hoping for more lamb with my pasta but otherwise that pasta was cooked just right and the sauce was flavorful. My friend had no key which I don't think I've ever ordered before. I tasted his gnocchi and it was surprisingly good. I always expect gnocchi to be very mushy but this gnocchi had great texture. I would order it next time. There's a lovely patio in the back of the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is lovely. The lighting is slightly dim but perfect for an evening meal.

Good food and flexible management

By tb911 |

5 stars based on service, 4 for food alone First of all, the food: Started with the meatballs and heirloom tomato salad. Both were just fine. In fact, my wife commented that she was NOT overrun with too much cheese, as tomato salads frequently are. A Plus. Wife had the Bison Tartar, this was the star of the night. Nicely flavored, with mango and avocado too. Great dish! I had the short ribs. They were good, but a bit dry, made me think of brisket in texture. Cheesecake and Chocolate mousse cake were enjoyable. Secondly, it was restaurant week here in San Diego, and I have to say that I like the fact that they have the special menu for the week AND the normal menu available for diners. This is not always the case. It is also nice that the portion sizes are the same on the special menu, they don’t cut sizes to go with the reduced price. Nice touch! To the service: We’d been here before, it’s a neighborhood restaurant near our house. Been here a few times in fact. Thought I’d take a group of friends for dinner, 10 of us total. Made the reservation, asked about corkage. Was told there was a two bottle limit. A few days reflection later, I decided this wasn’t going to work and looked around for another restaurant without such a limit. I thought about asking them to waive it for us, but I’ve had bad experiences in the past trying to get restaurants to waive corkage limits as a special exception. So I decided I’d just reward the restaurant with the reasonable policy and switch the reservation. I then sent this place, Farmer’s Bottega, a cancellation email, along with my reasoning, that I didn’t like the 2 bottle limit regardless of party size, and that it wasn’t going to work for me with a party of 10. The next day the owner replied stating that he agreed with me completely, and was changing their policy to remove the bottle limit on corkage. Wow! Totally unexpected! Most restaurants with such policies are extremely rigid and uncaring. This to me was nothing short of amazing. To show my appreciation, I responded that my wife and I would be in for dinner in a few days (it was too late to move my party of 10 back here again). That was tonight, and as it turns out our server was one of the managers, and he apologized to me for the trouble and along with that we had free corkage on our bottle of wine as well as a free dessert. They took care of us. I won’t forget that!

very inconsistent

By LaJolla3160 |

I have dined here twice for dinner, twice for brunch and twice for breakfast. I never know what to expect. The service is erratic and unpredictable, as is the food. I think breakfast and brunch are the most satisfying. Dinner service, food and atmosphere are disappointing.

Can't wait to come back

By islandchevygirl |

Went with a party of 7 for a birthday. Our server (tall blonde guy) was so friendly and sweet and seemed really pumped to work there. He gave great recommendations. My favorite entree was the Portobello Napoleon (which he recommended to my friend). Everything tasted so fresh and portions were perfect.

Delicious! Buenisimo!

By anlof9 |

We've been here twice for breakfast and both times it's been really good. First time tried their Gluten Free French Toast which was really tasty and good. This second time tried their Bottega Stack and it was super good. Service is always quick and friendly. Nice ambiance. Easy street parking.

Love the breakfast

By LChapie |

Revised review. This time everything was so good we ate several times during our visit this year. Eggs Benedict are always perfect. Others had various scrambles and huevos rancheros. Coffee is also good… as is the grapefruit juice. Much better service this time.

Great farm to table restaurant

By rpillai494 |

My friend and I were here for an early dinner before going to a performance at the Old Globe. This was my first visit and I was not disappointed. They had great lobster bisque and flatbreads (I had the one with the roasted veggies). The service was warm and welcoming and I liked the rustic decor. Worth a return visit.

Happy Hour at Farmer's Bottega? NOT! Only at the small bar!

By keninsandiego |

We had a annual planning meeting/mixer at "Farmer's Bottega"; it was a Weds. evening. When it was over (5:45 pm), we decided to go the bar, for what I thought was Happy Hour (3- pm). When asked if there is any "Happy Hour" specials/prices, they said, "yes!" When order a red wine ($6 Happy Hour price), the bill came out $14! Apparently, the employee, let us know, that "Happy Hour" specials/price were only the at the bar (seats 6, maybe 8), he said, "how else do you think we'll make money?". I was shaking my head. I can say, the rest of the staff was wonderful; it's unfortunate that one person can make an experience bad.

Great Experience

By Peter G |

Had a fantastic meal, with great service from Roberto. Wine is of a high standard and reasonably priced. On knowing it was our anniversary , Creme Brûlée arrived suitably decorated, a very nice touch. Place was busy but not that noisy. Worth the trip put of the city.

Great place in the neighborhood!!

By bbahama |

We have eaten there many times. Breakfast with family and friends, business lunches, intimate and group dinners. They have all worked out very well and the food and service are always very good and sometimes excellent. They have different specials during the week and a solid wine list and bar. Just go and enjoy.

A Good Meal and Wine - Californian Italian --good but some dishes a little heavy

By Stella S |

We were looking for a "farmer to table" restaurant and we do love Italian food. The ambience is informal and similar to a "farm" motif, yet comfortable. Our service was excellent, highly attentive recommended a great wine to go with our meal (a California Blend, more like Old World wine, which we prefer). We are light eaters and as such tend to share dishes as small plates and share an entree. The artichokes were very good as was the salad we ordered. We had the risotto with boar sausage, which was excellent (although my husband thought it was a little too busy with diverse ingredients). The oxtail ravioli was recommended, but we found it too heavy and the ravioli were too large with a heavier onion sauce for our liking. The bread plate is not really special, so i would not order again.

Great breakfast and service!

By Kristyn S |

We went on a Saturday morning for brunch. Food was great, fresh and well prepared. Service was excellent, everyone so friendly. The restaurant was full but we didn't have to wait long to get seated or for our food. Pancakes were my favourite!

Great food and service

By happytraveler49 |

We went here on a Sunday evening and enjoyed dining at a patio table, the friendly service and the excellent food!!! It was a perfect evening with friends and family. Before choosing this restaurant, we checked out the menus at several nearby restaurants. None were very veggie friendly, so we headed back here which was the first we had checked out. The PORTOBELLO NAPOLEON was simply outstanding!!! As a vegetarian, sometimes my only option is a grilled cheese or veggie burger. It was so nice to have a truly gourmet option that was simply delicious. What a treat indeed!!!! The other guests ordered the recommended short ribs and they were not disappointed. All in all a great dining experience, and we will be back if in the area again.

Best Breakfast

By fanders0n |

Fantastic experience from the staff to the great menu. Jorge and Anna were exceptional and made our experience more than just a quick breakfast.

What a great meal

By Len |

We loved this place. The food was special because it was not ordinary AND totally well prepared. Our salad was huge and delicious with lots of flavors we don't have every day, then the Bison cutlet was blue rare as requested and exquistely prepared. I'm just finishing off the last of the great bottle of wine "Pessimist" from Dauo cellars we had with our dinner...great to the last drop!

Delightful restaurant with good quality and service to match

By Ken P |

Really enjoy this Mission Hills Restaurant when we get the chance. The quality of food - farm to table - concept is good with some good variety. Service is non obtrusive and appropriate. Good choice of wines and cocktails.

Excellent Food!!!

By brendb1 |

Food was delicious and at a great price. I had the Mahi, Mahi tacos, absolutely devine! An associate had eggs benedic cooked perfectly with bacon wrapped around it, which looked like it came right from a farm. Homemade Truffle fries are a must! Being out of state they were out of bread to make pizza and some mixers for drink. The server informed us it was due to a busy weekend- we were there on a Monday. They even gave another co-worker samples of wine for free. Service a little slow due to a few male employees being on their phones continually or missing even though there were only 6 other tables in the restaurant. Servers were very kind and split our complicated check as requested. Love the antiques and atmosphere, would definitely return for the Fabulous food!

Lovely And Pleasent Brunch!

Great Brunch and Lunch

Good menu and atmosphere. Inside or out. Lovely breakfast menu (all day) with at least five unusual Eggs Benedict options, great Mexican dishes, salads and sandwiches for lunch. Dinner looks good.

New Option in Mission Hills for a Creative Italian/Local Meal

By Wayne G |

This new restaurant to the area has been opened now a number of months and this was our first visit. Curiously they keep the breakfast menu open along with the lunch menu, so we called it Brunch (on Wednesday). The changes to the restaurant space have made it more fun and modern. Decor is more country rustic with a touch of Mexico thrown in. The comfort of the seats left a bit to be desired. However, spacious seating arrangements made for a comfortable setting. They even have 11 tables available on the back patio so guests can enjoy the San Diego sunshine. With their warehouse motif, like other restaurants in the neighborhood, the sound level rises as more guests arrive. Thus plan to go early to beat the sound level with the crowds who now frequent this restaurant. It is very popular. The service was impeccable with Naila, our server, meeting our every need and also explaining items on the menu and things we wanted to know about the restaurant. Seemed every server was there to please guests. Their menu was breakfast on one side of the menu and lunch on the other. Choices were varied and breakfast is now on our radar for another visit. Lunch had items of salads, sandwiches and flat breads accompanied with a choice of chicken, steak, shrimp or fish. Definitely our choices were terrific and there is something for every taste. The "Farmer's" of the area and their contribution to the cuisine was acknowledged on the lunch menu. This authenticated their claim of farm-to-table. There was no dessert menu, but several items of the day were available if you ask your server here. Chocolate cake, ice cream and other fun items were choices but the meal itself was quite filling. Typically we pick a dessert to go for this reason. Personally we are very pleased to have such a nice, friendly and tasty new restaurant in our Mission Hills neighborhood. They will definitely see us again soon.

Delicious Breakfast

By sd_dawn |

Our first visit here. Went for breakfast to use a voucher and had no trouble. Cute interior, rustic, high ceilings and lots of natural light. We had the stuffed French toast (stuffed with mascarpone cheese) and topped with fresh berries. Also the chilaquiles. Both were outstanding. Hubby thinks the chilaquiles are the best he's ever had! So there you go. We'll go back for sure! Also a small dog friendly patio in back.

Love!

By evilalva |

Fresh ingredients with the San Diego twist. Oaxacan Hot Chocolate. We were there on a Sunday for brunch and were seated immediately. We had a great waitress Alejandra. My friend left her phone and they had kept it safe for us until we figured out we lost it. When we travel we like to try new food and tend to try multiple items, The Bananas foster French toast, Benedicts and the Bottega-YES!!!

Jorge was extremely rude

By Laura D |

I was yesterday with a friend having lunch. We arrived around 11:30 am. There was only a couple of people only in the restaurant it took them 35 minutes to bring the meal and my friend made a comment about it. Jorge, the server was defensive and with a bad attitude about it. My friend ask to speak to the manager and he answered in a rude way that he was the manager and asked us to leave the restaurant. We have been there before and loved the place for the great food but I doubt we’ll ever go back. You Salud not have that kid if management in a restaurant.

Delightful neighborhood jewel

By cookielover54 |

Wonderful restaurant for breakfast or lunch. Breakfast is served all day. While they have lots of dishes, I was able to customize my omelette and it was delicious. The portobello mushroom sandwich was delicious as well. Ambiance is homey and service was superb. Energetic crowd so a bit noisy but nothing too bad. There is a nice courtyard in the back if the weather behaves.

A Very Well Done Benedict

By Luke P |

After writing a negative review, I need to get my universe aligned so I want to talk about one of the pleasant surprises I've had recently courtesy of Farmer's Bottega. To begin with, I'm glad they chose to offer local bean mavens Cafe Moto as their coffee of choice. Nice to support a local and good roaster. Secondly, their short rib benny was very well done. Short rib was succulent, not overly salted and one thing I love is the perfect portion size of their potatoes. How many places go overboard on the portion size of cheap potatoes??? Very nice job and the restaurant fits perfectly the understated style of Mission Hills.

Nice dinner for two

By Brando62 |

Great food well prepared great service and very well paced. They went so far as to run across the street to get Ginger beer for a Mule that we ordered. Nice wine selection and rotating catch and meat of the day. We had the chicken and short ribs and both were fall off the bone tender. Nice quaint cozy ambiance. Indoor and outdoor seating with a nice full service bar.

Charming Place That Should Be Tried

By Ric |

My family and I went for their Christmas dinner special. The food was very good and we had friendly, attentive service. I'm curious about their "regular" menu and will probably go back some time.

Dinner

By Nasim G |

We had dinner here during the restaurant week. I won’t go back. Good service but low quality food. Very dry short ribs and over cooked brûlée. Not worth the hype.

Great breakfast

By vanwinkle7562 |

My daughter and I both had the stay fit omelette mushroom, spinach goat cheese. Simply delicious. Great service. And great decor.

First timer

By SJH |

I gave the waiter three options to choose for me; he chose the turkey sandwich. I had gone for brunch so I will choose differently next time. Loved the decor...wish I had known there was seating outside.

Cute place with the right idea

By jake2771 |

Went on a quiet night. Decor is really nice and embodies the name. The menu and cocktails are creative with lots of options. Service was good. Again ideas good as well as ingredients. Execution was off and disappointed. This started with appetizer and went all the way to dessert. Cocktails were good. I really wanted to like this place but they need to work on it. If I lived nearby I would give them another chance.

True to form

By TarheelMD |

Everything you would expect from a farm to table with personable service and an inviting ambience. We had the bison tartare, burnt carrot salad, bison filet, and fennel sausage flat bread and they were so delicious, we topped them off with tartufo gelato and creme brûlée. Splendid! Also not to be missed are the cocktails: kombucha mojito and bacon Bloody Mary couldn't have been better! We will definitely be back!

Oh yummy yummy very good yummy. Much recommended.

By gogirls555 |

I had a fantastic breakfast here today. Yummy. Great service. Really cool ambience. Breakfast was the eggs, soy chorizo, spinach --- well prepared. They feature farm to table fare. Good looking wine selection. Breakfast menu was very extensive. Next time --- lemon poppy seed pancakes with lemon mascarpone.

My friends invited me to this nice and cozy place in Mission Hills called FARMER'S BOTTEGA for Restaurant week, we had 3 course dinner for $30 each , you got to try it, i had the baby ARTICHOKES for appetizer then our server ROBERTO suggested the SHORT RIBS (melts in your mouth) for dessert the MANGO COCONUT was delicius. I really recommand this place, nice decor and top notch SERVICE. Thanks to my friends for taking me to this wonderful Restaurant.... I'l be back!

Birthday

By John R |

This is my second time here and will certainly come again. The food as always was fresh and tasty. I have had the Bison filet and Ox tail ravioli here. The Bison was tender and flavorful served with Swiss Chard and it was all very good. The Ox tail ravioli was good as well, but if you don't like rich sauces don't order, very flavorful. Wine list is reasonable with a decent selection. Rustic decor and tight seating makes for a lively evening. Why not 5 stars? Desserts were ok, chocolate lava cake was not hot in the middle, coconut mango cake was light on the flavor but moist.

Laid Back, Farm to Table Neighborhood Treat

By Robert Stephen B |

Stopped in solo to this place after my San Diego fave was closed for vacation in late August. Warm. welcoming and attentive staff and an informal but very comfortable atmosphere and vibe. I had the turkey sandwich on whole grain bread that was grilled/toasted and simply delicious. Big portion served with a tasty side salad. The quality of the ingredients was what impressed me, from the bread to the carved turkey and all the fixings (I think avo and cheese were on it, too). I couldn't finish the 2nd half and only wished I was staying close by so I could take it home. I saw several other entrees and sandwiches being served and they all looked incredibly generous and fresh. Highly recommended.

Cold, dry, burnt french toast

By email4saundra1 |

Please, someone explain to me how a slice of bread soaked (supposedly) in milk and eggs, can break, when they try to bend it around the fruit before service. Arrived cold. It either wasn't picked up promptly by server, or was not freshly cooked. I flipped it over to find the other side was burnt. See photo. Server was absent for most of meal, but restaurant was nearly empty. He walked past my empty coffee cup with the urn of coffee he refilled our neighbors' coffee cup with. Worst service/meal i have had in a while. Too bad, because I applaud the farm to table effort, and the decor was pleasant.

Rustic, inviting, and delicious!

By heuster3 |

Well, when it's your birthday and someone else is buying, definitely have a place in mind. Farmer's Bottega does not disappoint! Friendly greeting when we entered, and we didn't have a reservation, but it was all good. We sat against one of the walls which gave us a good perspective of the dining room. There's a nice large community(?) table which would be fun to bring friends to. I like the vibe and ambiance. Nice selection of wines, we settled on the Llama Malbec since it's one I am familiar with. I passed on the song and dance and just told our server to pour it. He was courteous and cordial, but he was also watching over the bar, so not overly friendly or attentive, which was fine. We started with the fried green tomato...just because there was a movie named after it! Great crunchy panko coating and the chipotle sauce was delicious...I wished there was more! I ordered the buffalo filet and the birthday boy ordered the special flat iron steak. I had them cook mine medium rare and it was tender and juicy, served over creamy garlic mash and served with an amazing sauce! The birthday boy should've ordered his med rare too. His medium well was a little dryer than he wanted...and that's what happens when you ask for that temp on a great cut of steak. The spicy pasta that came with was delicious...yes, I had to try it. It was a great dining experience for our first time here. If there was a delay in service, we didn't notice since eating out for me usually takes about 2-3 hours...if wine is involved. Our server genuinely thanked us as we walked out, maybe he felt bad cause he couldn't give us the kind of attention he wanted to. I can't wait to come back and try some of the other dishes like the oxtail ravioli or the rack of lamb.

Food underwhelming, atmosphere great

By littlebee1003 |

This is a very very cute place! The farmhouse decor, the farm-to-table menu, the mason jars on the tables...it was so adorable and led me to have high expectations going in to the meal. I ordered the Bottega salad and my husband and I shared the burger and the portobello stack. The Bottega salad was good, I can’t complain much there, but it did take a long time for our apps to come out even though the restaurant wasn’t full. The portobello stack was small for an entree! Two small stacks of vegetables, which were soaked in oil. Not very flavorful. The burger was extremely dry, the patty too small for the bun. Again, not enough flavor. The French fries that came with the burger were good at first, but the bottom fries in the basket were too oily and limp. Maybe I would go back for some cocktails to soak up the atmosphere, but definitely not for the food.

BEST MEAL, BEST SERVICE, WARMEST AMBIANCE

By ellireza |

My husband and I recently celebrated my birthday in this restaurant which was referred to us by a colleague. Boy, were we so glad we did try this place out! From the very moment we walked in, we were taken over by the warmth service and the very polite and friendly waiter ( unfortunately I can't recall his name but it may be Mathew) . Everything that he suggested from the Wine selection ( we tried the Barolo and it was DELICIOUS) to the appetizer and food choice, all were exquisite and we savoured every bite. He suggested the Artichoke appetizer and we loved it so much that he treated me for another plate of it. That was so very sweet and generous of him.Our food was AMAZING and the beautiful, rustic and warm decor along with the super nice and friendly staff made our entire evening unforgettable and one that goes in my BEST EVER MEALS BOOK! If you are visiting San Diego or just looking to have one memorable meal, YOU MUST TRY THIS RESTAURANT! The cuisine is absolutely top rated and exquisite!

Delicious meal in lovely setting

By Mary D |

We were very pleased with the delicious meal and fabulous ambiance at Farmer's Bottega. It's located in a rather unassuming location along a busy street in Mission Hills, but is a little oasis from the noise outside as soon as you enter the space. The decor is relaxing but creative and beautiful, the service was attentive yet not over-bearing and the food was quite tasty. We had the octopus as a starter, along with the buffalo steak, the mahi mahi plus mussels and baby kale salad. All the items we chose were beautifully presented and very tasty. They also had some nice wines from which to choose. We arrived right at 5pm, and it was empty, but even as other tables filled up, the noise level stayed well within reason. They also have an adorable back patio but we sat inside as it was still a bit breezy. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant if you are in this neck of the woods!

Great Brunch

By Abbey H |

What a great brunch spot in Mission Hills. Right near Balboa Park. Farm to table restaurant with a neat decor. The menu has a lot of options. The banana fosters french toast was unbelievable!

Just Average

By Liz |

I hate to give any new restaurant 3 stars, but we weren't all that impressed with the food. The menu is very interesting and sounds like it would be great. However, the taste was just average and not that different from other like restaurants. Everything needed more seasoning and we didn't care for the dressing on the Caesar salad, it tasted more like Thousand Island. Our friends got the fried green tomatoes and said they were bland. I had the short ribs and they were just average, but the Polenta was good. My husband had the Buffalo filet and it didn't have much flavor. We also didn't care to drink water out of mason jars, the paper napkins or how loud it was. They have only been open 3 weeks so I am hoping things get better. We won't go back unless we happen to hear some really awesome things about the food.

Jorge was extremely rude

By AuroraMedina |

Jorge gave us terrible service. He told us to leave the restaurant when I mentioned to him that we waited too long for our food. He was rude and more that rude. He asked to leave, when I asked to speak to the manager he mentioned he was the manager. You do not want to have someone in charge with that attitude. We always enjoyed coming here, the foos is really good but people like that should not be in the hospitality service

Delicious food

By klmsmm |

This is a great restaurant with many breakfast/brunch choices. There are also many gluten free options as well. Be sure to order the roasted potatoes with truffle oil as your side - you will not be disappointed!

Excellent Food and Service

By agg2011 |

This is a gem in the already crowded Mission Hills & Hillcrest restaurant market. The restaurant operates under a farm to table premise and they most definitely deliver. They use local farms and farmers to source a lot of their ingredients. The dishes are expertly "crafted" to insure all of the flavors come together. Our group of four tried two appetizers: (1) the burrata and (2) the zucchini blossom. Both were excellent with very good flavors and interesting mix of ingredients. For entrees we had Mary Farm Chicken, Pork Chop, and Salmon (the special for the day). Everyone was very happy with their dishes. I specifically had the Salmon which was very good. I also tried the chicken and was very impressed. The service was impeccable. Attentive but not obtrusive. Overall this is a great restaurant, with excellent food and atmosphere. Its great for date night or a night out with friends.

Wonderful breakfast

Nice environment and deco. Just wish that there was not plastic plants on the wall Food is excellent and reasonable I ordered Huevos rancheros and it was delicious not too saucy and not salty. We also ordered short ribs Benedict and it was very tasty.

Delicious!

We went to Farmer's Bottega on President's Day for brunch. Everything was delicious. My husband got an eggs Benedict. I got a BLT that was fantastic and fries!! We had our newborn with us and though it was crowded inside, they were still able to accommodate a high chair so we could put her car seat by the table. It was a great meal!

Slow

By Shannon F |

We came for brunch and it was dry good. Had the French toast with cream and strawberries and I will admit the menu didn't lie. They were some of the best I've had. The eggs had something in them that was also delicious. Great all around place. The downside...it wasn't that busy either- we waited just shy of 1 hour to get our food!!! Plenty of kitchen staff from what I could see, but terribly slow food prep. Come try if you have an hour and half to kill.

Breakfast Bunch

We had a bump in the road when we first got there with our drinks but once that got fixed everything was great! Staff super friendly and food is fantastic. Coffee was fresh and delicious. Plus side owner came out to check on us and drinks were on the house!! 👍 I'd definitely check it out, food is worth it! 😊

Great food and service

A top ten dinning experience in San Diego, food is excellent and variety. Recently got their licor license, making it a complete dinning experience, a must try. Parking can be complicated at times, pay parking below complex through side street sorry don´t recall name of street.

Delicious food in a beautiful setting!

By CCGMatt |

Visited here during a work conference. My coworker and I loved the decor and ambiance. Not busy at all on a Monday morning and we had our choice of seats. She chose the buttermilk pancakes and I chose the pecan crusted chicken sandwich. They were both outstanding. The prices were reasonable too! Two entrees, coffee, and soft drink for $32. The service was fast and friendly.

Unfortunate Experience

By John G |

We had a most unfortunate and unpleasant experience last night at Farmer's Bottega. We arrived early for our reservation and were seated immediately. 25 minutes later we were still waiting for someone to take our drink orders, even though the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived. Three tables that were seated after us were served drinks while we still weren't even approached by a waiter. This, after making eye contact with at least four waiters while we tried to get waited on. Finally, we just left. Have been to this restaurant multiple times in the past, but time to move on to places that have their act together.

Weekend Lunch

By Chandra701 |

We were there at noon on a Sunday. It was busy, but we only had a short wait for our table. We had a salad, and 2 different kinds of burgers, and they were amazing! We also ordered the seasonal fresh veggies, highly recommend. All the wait staff was pleasant and nice. It was really good pricing compared to many other places we ate at in San Diego. Would love to go back!

Good service, great food

By Alison C |

We arrived in San Diego about 10:30am and immediately began looking for a good brunch. Farmer's Bottega did not disappoint! We loved everything we tasted, and my seven-year-old proclaimed this the best grilled cheese of her life. The coffee was great, the service was solid, and the menu had some amazing selections. It was tough to narrow it down but we were very pleased with our selections. Glad we gave this place a shot.

Creative fesh cuisine in an interesting atmosphere

By Stephanb1126 |

First rate fresh product that you can believe came from the local area. I don't often see quail on the menu and totally enjoyed it along with the company of a fine polenta and some greens. The service was certainly friendly and enjoyable. The one drawback is the noise level. With tables in close contact, there was a table of six ladies clearly enjoying themselves and our table of four could barely communicate over their yelling and overly loud laughter, propelled by the wine they were clearly enjoying. I would go again, but not before checking out the seating. Not your intimate kind of place for a quiet dinner.

Great find!

Pros: Very friendly wait staff High quality ingredients Delicious recipes making for very tasty dishes Pretty restaurant Price point Cons: None that I can think of

Couldn’t be more pleased!

By David H |

What a pleasant surprise this little place was. We just finished a nice family/anniversary dinner here. The room is a bit small but very welcoming and cozy. And the kids menu was perfect for my two kids. This is what all restaurants should be like. Good, clean, fresh food that doesn’t weigh you down for the next day or two. We had reservations but were able to be seated immediately and the wait staff and hostess were attentive but not over bearing. Which I always appreciate. It was also nice after we ordered our food that they asked if we preferred the kids food to cone out first. I can’t tell you how nice it is when a restaurant realizes how hard it can be trying to have a nice meal with hungry young ones. I ordered the mary farm free range chicken with fingerling potatoes and Brussels sprouts. My wife had the fennel sausage cavatelli. For my kids, the grilled cheese sandwich with fries, and the pasta with marinara sauce. All of it was incredibly delicious and one could argue that the kids pasta with marinara was the best dish at our table. My son ate the entire bowl, and he’s 2. You could also argue that that dish would be a nice adult lunch meal. The grilled cheese was also great, with a couple different cheeses inside and perfectly toasted bread. The fries were nice. Think of In n Out fries but way better. Nothing special, just fresh fried potatoes, and that’s it. That is how fries should be made. My daughter ate the fries before anything else they were so good. My free range chicken was cooked perfectly. Juicy and tender on the inside with a nice lightly crispy skin. And even the brussels sprouts were worth a try. And I DON’T eat brussels sprouts. The only downside was that our waitress briefly forgot my wife and I’s drinks, however she ended up not charging us for them, so hardly a downside. Overall, not a single bad thing to say. Would definitely return the next time we’re in town.

Very good Sunday breakfast.

By Jesus M C G |

Delicious Sunday breakfast. Good Service, fast and efficient, very friendly, but above all very rich !!!! Excellent price. You can tell when a restaurant is good because of the number of people waiting, however it was quick and even more because we had breakfast at the bar. HIGHLY recommended. is in the Hill Crest area.

Disappointed

By SDTravelMom |

This was my 2nd visit. First time everything was great. This time I was not as impressed. Service was not as good. Ordered huevos rancheros. They charged an extra $2 for pico de gallo! This is San Diego how can you serve it without pico de gallo or any kind of salsa. Eggs benedict were also just ok. Sauce was not warm. Overall just not as thrilled. Am hoping it was just an off day.

A most delightful experience.

By rbrobertw |

Upon entering the restaurant we felt comfortable and relaxed. The staff was vey attentive and our waiter, Jorge, made the evening pass without any pauses. The wines and beers were enjoyed by all. The appetisers that made a hit to start with were the housemade meatballs with a spicy tomato sauce along with seared Artichoke Hearts in a beurre blanc sauce that you wanted to drink from the bowl. The lamb shank was exquisite (horizontal oso buco). The buffalo filet and the flat iron pork were excellent. Topped off with a decadent chocalote dessert. There is a wonderful outside patio in the rear.

Amazing Food

By Alicia B |

We had an excellent brunch here during the week. It was a sparse crowd with a quiet and cozy atmosphere. The wait staff as a little slow but since there weren't many people around that's understandable. There were several fun options like the mimosa flight and custom french toast. I wouldn't recommend it for children but there would still be food for them of course.

"Brunch at Farmers Bottega"

By Daniel A |

My husband and I enjoyed another superior experience at this restaurant. Very attractive, courteous, professional staff serving the most deliciously prepared organic food in the most congenial atmosphere. Low volume music and the food channel playing on the flat screen. Who could ask for anything more?

Breakfast

By Frank M |

Fast friendly service. Coffee was bitter. Attentive server. I had the spinach sausage hash. It was very tasty with pesto in it but just a bit too much salt.

Great Place!!!

By jane s |

Fresh, great food prepared beautifully and accompanied by inexpensive wine. Loved the waitstaff!. They gave great information about what else to try in this lovely city.

Extremely good food with outstanding service

By BigA1999 |

I like this concept around having fresh food from the farmer to your table. The restaurant has amazing food. Everything is fresh and menu has a variety of dishes. The service was superb and the waiter was always able to provide me a perfect wine recommendation. It was so good that we decided to come back to the restaurant for breakfast the next day as well.

Excellent Restaurant Week Choice for Date Night

By Darrell92104 |

This typically friendly casual restaurant was busy and noisy on the first Sunday night of San Diego restaurant week, but the food was very bit as good and the service excellent! We were not disappointed.

So good !

By Rene B |

I visited on a Sunday afternoon. The place was full . But the staff is so friendly and organized you really don't feel like you are put on hold. We ordered the Soyrizo plate that includes black beans 3 eggs and flavorful chorizo made of soy. Coffee is always fresh and service is courteous and fast. I strongly recommend everyone to go visit this wonderful restaurant. Ambiance and decoration is simple but tasteful.

Can skip

Food was so so only. Nothing particularly stands out. Service was minimal. Maybe space availability was a credit in a way.

Cozy and eclectic cafe

By Anna M |

My friends invited me to share a meal here. To my surprise, there was nopales (cactus) on the menu. My breakfast was delicious and prepared perfectly! Each of our plates were nicely done. The service was great. There is a full bar here, a bit too early for us however. The weather wasn't cooperating, but if it was, there was a nice quiet patio in the rear. Highly recommend this establishment.

Food was awesome... service not so much

By LChapie |

We have been eating breakfast here for several years and it is always great. The food is good, the coffee is delicious. Its the only restaurant that knows how to make a great cup of coffee. The food is’t the issue... it's the service we had a problem with. We ordered, and ALMOST everything came out in a reasonable time, and it was perfect, except no pancakes. We ate our entire breakfast and the pancakes never showed up until we asked for the bill... and then magically they appeared. We told the server we no longer wanted them... they never came with the rest of the meal, and now we were done. We asked him to take them off the bill, since they didn’t come with everything else, and we never ate them. He then decided it was OK for him to scold us loudly, and publicly, in front of all your other diners on the patio. He told us how he is loosing money because we didn’t pay for the pancakes that he didn’t bring. It was very uncomfortable to be yelled at by a server... after all it was him who didn’t do his job by bringing us the entire order. I would have loved to have the pancakes but if part of your meal doesn’t show up until the bill comes... that is a problem.

Lunch at Farmer's Bottega

By Michaelanne G |

Lunch here is delicious. The relaxed atmosphere, kind staff, eclectic decor made for an interesting and comfy experience. The grilled portobello mushroom with arugula and goat cheese is highly recommended. A plentiful plate, with a side salad was filling, not over done. The patio area is welcoming and cool, a nice place to be in the summer.

A restaurant at once wholesome and elegant

By Vagabonde401 |

We tried this restaurant on Saturday night during San Diego Restaurant Week. We had reservations, arrived 10 minutes late and had to wait for our table at the bar for around 30 minutes. This was pretty good on a busy night. The restaurant is attractively decorated and the tables are well spaced. The food is locally sourced and of very good quality. My husband had the salad as a starter and the free range chicken as a main course. I had the fried green tomatoes and the pork with squash and kale. The vegetables were full of flavor and the meat delicious. Everything was well presented and bursting with freshness and taste. The manager recommended a pinot noir from Oregon and it was good and moderately priced. He was very attentive throughout dinner as was our waitress.Overall, it was a very good experience and we will go back with friends and family.

Excellent food great atmosphere

We just ate dinner here. The food was fresh, tasty and unique. The meat and cheese try were great. The kids grilled cheese were big enough for an adult. Great Dining. Great atmosphere. We hope to go again

We went in, sat down and waited, and waited, and waited.

By Joel B |

This is the second time we tried this restaurant. Some food critic said that they had good food so we gave it another try. Last time service was very slow and we didn't like our meal because it was overcooked and came out luke-warm. This time we were shown to a table, looked at the menu and then just sat there. No one asked us if we wanted drinks, no one came to get our order - nothing. Like last time, it wasn't even very busy. After FIFTEEN MINUTES of sitting there we got up and walked out of the restaurant. We're not going back.

Incredible food

Tender & Moist Buffalo Best ever!

By DebbeD777 |

Can hardly wait to return for breakfast or lunch and tell others about this gem in Mission Hills area of San Diego. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by several staff and had the most personable waiter, Tyler. He was joyful and very attentive and memorized orders for all three of us. Nice wine list and helpful pairings. Ambiance was set in an Italian Bottega (farmers' shop) and very charming. Everything was well presented w/ "creative do-dads" decorating plates. Plates were hot or very cold as needed. The short ribs were scrumptious with a sauce that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Polenta was creamy and cheesy, accompanying vegetables perfectly cooked. My husband had the grass-fed buffalo and it too was perfectly prepared. My husband asked for additional gravy for his meat and garlic mashed potatoes. No hesitation by our waiter or extra charge like some restaurants. We also had beet salad with feta cheese and fennel--outstanding and large portion. As it was my husband's birthday, they brought a delicious complimentary baked apple dessert ala mode. Already planning our next meal at the Farmers Bottega.

Another breakfast place to put on the list.

Our party of five decided to try here as we staying close in Mission Hills and like to try new places for breakfast. This place did not disappoint. We all had different breakfast items and every plate was delicious. We finished off by sharing two types of French toast.Wow !! Great staff and lovely atmosphere. Will be back at the end of the year when we return.

Seems to have a service issue

By KMillerNewYork |

Went with friends from the area who have been here before. Everyone, them and other reviewers, seems to think breakfast is very good here. We met for dinner, not realizing that our friends did not have a good dinner experience previously. The last time their food was incorrect and not really corrected. The manager asked them to give them another try, and so they brought us back with them. We sat in the back on a nice evening. Our server, Matt, was very nice and very attentive. Our friends ordered salads and we only ordered an entree. When our entrees came with their salads, my friend was not happy...again. Our friends had the heirloom tomato caprese salad and the watermelon salad, which they both enjoyed. Then they had the ravioli and a pasta special, which also was very good. My husband had the short ribs and I had the shrimp and bacon flatbread. All of the food was delicious, but we were just not happy with the order that it was served. After having service issues last time, my friend expressed her concern again. Matt was very nice about it and couldn't have been more apologetic about it and he sent the manager over...again. Yes, they discounted the dinner and Matt brought us all an after dinner drink on him, but when are they going to get it right? Bottom line- the food is good, the service could be better.

Absolutely delicious meal with excellent service

By Cincy45209 |

My husband and I were traveling to San Diego and came upon this great restaurant with farm to table enthusiasm. It was couples menu which they do on Wednesdays which was a fantastic deal and incredible food. We shared a caprese salad with wonderful tomatoes and a basil purée. Yum! My husband had roasted chicken which was definitely the star compared to the gnocchi that I had. We finished it off with a chocolate molten cake which was amazing. In addition, we enjoyed wine by the glass and had our server make recommendations based on their list. They were fantastic. Definitely a place I would recommend!

Yes, it's well worth it. The French toast is crack level

By Edan M |

Went for a Sunday brunch, ordered the blue crab Benedict and French toast sampler. Both dishes were awesome, French toast is addictive, best I've had. Place is awesome looking and our server was helpful, genuine and a sweetheart. Also, their cocktails are fantastic. I felt like a winner ;)

EXCELLENT!!

By David T |

Attentive staff and fresh food make this place a joy to to visit. Good for Gluten Free and veggies, the wine list pleases and the atmosphere is friendly. Dog friendly too at lunch if the patio at the back is open in good weather.

Good lunch- brunch spot

By 858sdtraveler2018 |

Went for brunch- lunch with friends. Half of us had lunch food , the other half breakfast food. Everyone had a terrific food.! Fresh delicious ingredients all the way around. Nice ambiance, good friendly service. They even have an outdoor area too! Only negative I can think of is that it is really loud inside

Just wonderful!

By Bobtor1 |

We had such a great evening when we went with my son and daughter-in-law that I went back the next day with my daughter and her husband and two kids. The food is great, the service is excellent, the ambiance is like a little slice of Italy and the prices are reasonable. What more can one ask for? Bravo to Tony, the owner and his team. The burrata is really good, the pastas are perfectly al dente and everyone enjoyed their mains....between us we tried the bulk of the menu.

Neighborhood gem with great food and service

By Rajan A |

We live in the area and have visited this restaurant a few times now. The experience has been wonderful with friendly staff, good food and love the decor. I like their limited menu rather than a "book" that some restaurants have. This restaurant has done a good job even with the tough competition from other good restaurants on the same block. They have a patio at the back and is a great place to have a party of 10-20 people without being tied to a long table inside. The restaurant does get noisy inside but that is typical of other restaurants nearby too.

Hidden gem

By Andie-and-Rob |

A unique menu with farm to table quality and very reasonable prices. This is my new favorite restaurant. The food and service are fantastic. My mom and I came for breakfast and shared a delicious brie and prosciutto frittata. We loved the ambience so much that we came back for dinner. We shared a bruschetta, the stuffed quail, and the bison filet. It was incredible.
