The place in Westmoreland to go for breakfast! Can be a wait but it is worth it for this family friendly spot.

I've been going to Fat Albert's since it opened almost 11 years ago. The food is fresh and delicious, and the coffee is superb as well. I tend to order "The Old-Fashioned", which is 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, and potatoes and toast. Sometimes I get pancakes instead of the bread and toast, sometimes sausage instead of the bacon. Everything is so good that I can't go wrong. A special call out goes to the pancakes and home made biscuits. Yum! Service is good, food is great, and it's in a nice neighborhood.

Lots of food, easy to split the order with someone else. Fresh squeezed orange juice. Homemade biscuits like cotton balls. The omelette was filled with ham and veggies. The staff are friendly. We will be back.

Great breakfast, warm atmosphere, good choices for vegetarians. Plan for a wait if going on a weekend or a snowy workday.

This place is pretty small, and has a line out the door. They don't take debit/credit cars, just check or cash. We very impressed with the food, we were seated at the "bar" in front of the cooks. It was so cool to watch how they prepare everything, all was fresh! I got the "Greek" omlette, with artichokes and feta cheese, it was very well prepared, the taste was just right. My hubby got the French toast and he loved it, which says a lot. They did a good job on keeping up with coffee and water. We went back a few times and the food was equally good every time, we got other items on the menu as well. The service is what you would expect from your local breakfast joint, very informal and laid back. We will be back for sure.

I'm a Portland native and have never been to Fat Albert's so I need to make up for lost time. Love this place. The help is friendly and quirky and fun. Food is terrific. George, the cook, is unflappable. We sat at the counter and could watch George cooking, he's very zen. The potatoes (hash browns or home browns) are real fresh potatoes and they are sooo good. I think the toast was Grand Central bread, which is the best in Portland according to me. Very energetic atmosphere. Diet Coke in cans! It. is. Awlllll, Good!

On a weekday morning, it's not so busy. My wife and I got to meet the owner, who continues the family restaurant after her mother and sister retired. It's a small cozy little diner. Breakfast was very good...plentiful and tasty. Note: they don't take credit cards! (There are ATM's at the Wells Fargo and Bank of America just up the block.) The menu is not particularly extensive, but has some interesting omelets (I had the Garbage Grinder and my wife had Kim's Fave) as well as the typical bacon and eggs, french toast, etc. The pricing is average among breakfast places at around $10 for each plate. The atmosphere is somewhat rustic or "well-used." If I were a local, I'd be back. As one who's exploring to see what restaurants are in the Portland area, it wouldn't be high on my list...but it IS on my list.

Why eat fast food or chain grub when you can get what the locals choose? Limited menu, but all fresh ingredients and real service from a waitress who knows the gig. Tiny place. Funky. Worth a visit.

Outstanding neighborhood restaurant, friendly staff, common table food is excellent restaurant is clean. Hours are Mon - Fri 7 - 2 and weekend 7 - 3. However they only take cash or checks.

My husband and I have been eating here for 12+ years. Not very often, maybe 4-5 times per year. It is one of my favorite breakfast places. The food (primarily omelets) is very, very good. Service is equal to the food. They always make you feel at home. Most of the time there is a wait but it's well worth it.

Wins no awards for decor or charm, but the food is totally solid. Great basic breakfast. Bring cash - no plastic accepted. Easy free parking.

My sister and I started going to Fat Albert's a few months ago, and it is now our "go to breakfast place". The staff is friendly, keep your coffee / water / tea full, and deliver the food as ordered, every time! The new chef is doing a great job, and even, John, the helper in the back room, pops out to say hello! We feel like family and look forward to our visits every week. The menu includes traditional food but they always have specials on the board up front. One challenge - they can get busy, so you may have a short wait as seating is limited. Thanks, all, for the ongoing great food and service!

5 of us squeezed at a brightly colored picnic table outside and enjoyed brunch. Service was attentive - multiple staff came to take our drink and food orders. They warned us about bees but we only saw one yellow jacket. Pancakes were huge! My 7-year-old son quite ambitiously ordered the full stack of pancakes; the short stack would have been more than ample. Special of strawberry French toast was more modestly sized and moderately tasty (the strawberries were fresh and yummy). My husband got the giant yuppy omelet and was happy but quite full the rest of the day. Was a pleasant spot to eat and chat, and we were well tended to. Would go again if we were in the neighborhood.

Love this place. The food is always good and it is a smaller, neighborhood restaurant. The best thing is that the biscuits are nice and creamy and fluffy. Yum

Had the pancakes combo with eggs, bacon. The best pancakes I have ever had. Love the small, sidewalk eating locations in the Sellwood neighborhood.

A typical Diner, Drive In and Dive type kind of place. Colorful, funky Portland breakfast joint. Entertaining until the plates were delivered to our table. We were immediately disappointed by the lack of plate appeal. The potatoes and biscuits were made from scratch, however lacked flavor. The omelet needed a major flavor rescue. The only thing on the table was hot sauce. That being said. Didn't care for the food @ fat Albert 's. Split a breakfast and the cheque was 15.50. Pretty spendy for disappointing dining?!!!!!!!!!!

So only street parking a small restaurant but a decent breakfast nice omelets and pancakes. Coffee good and the service is okay, but this is an institution were people go and expect to wait. Too many table too little help and space.

Small, local eatery, for breakfast and lunch. Best bacon in town, and seasonal favorites. Coffee cup is kept full, service is friendly and prompt, and food is delicious! A neighborhood gem.

oh their eggs bene...

Not much to look at, but a very good Denver omelette and a decent cup of coffee. A pretty run down diner interior no bigger than a wide hallway. 8 or 9 tables for 2 or 4, and a counter seating 6 facing the grill. Service was excellent at 8:30 AM. No wait. Good food in a simple, not-flashy environment. Johnny Cash playing "Walk the Line" in the background not too loud. Conversation was easy. A comfortable unpretentious place.

My wife and I were actually out and about in West Moreland recently. We decided to try Fat Albert's for breakfast. I had eaten there a couple of times right after it opened when we lived around the corner. The menu hadn't changed a whole lot. The food is about what you would expect, very straight forward. They do not offer hashbrowns but home potatoes. 15 years ago this was an anomaly in Portland but has become the norm as the city has had a cultural paradigm shift. Food is a 4 service was slow and the staff a bit aloof. Neither of these have changed since they opened. The mere fact that they have survived though is a testament. Go for the food, forget the ambience and expect to wait.

If you have a chance to visit the Sellwood neighborhood in Portland, be sure to eat breakfast at fat Alberts. Great food, friendly staff, Service - well, I have had better. However in all fairness it is a very small place, and I have had to wait -not long-, the wait is worth it and the friendly staff overcomes all. If you are lucky, they may have the corned beef beakfast, makes anyone else's just so-so. Be warned that parking is street parking, you may have to walk a short distance

Had the 'Old Fashion' breakfast it came relatively quick for as busy as they were, it was well prepared and it tasted very good.

If you're in the Sellwood neighborhood and are looking for a great, no frills breakfast, Fat Albert's Breakfast Cafe is it. Service was fast (weekday) and friendly; food was fresh. I had scrambled eggs, bacon, and their potatoes "home browns," all done just right--not greasy, not over or undercooked. The coffee is good too. Couldn't have asked for anything else.

little hole in the wall but great breakfast, we had omelets and french toast and the service was great!

So good - it's my neighborhood joint and I could go there every weekend. Biscuits and gravy, home browns and pancakes (well, maybe not all at once). Customer service takes some warming up but they're great once they recognize you as a local :)

I have eyed this cute spot for a long time. Read the reviews, and decided to go for it. I am in the service industry, breakfast n lunch joint. So while I forgive many things, this just didn't do it for me. Not much seating inside, but that's okay. The bar provides if you are dining alone, but a knee injury makes that a no. So I opted for outside. One of the tables had good shade. I got a coffee, I longed for water which I asked for, and orange juice. These all came. However no one offered me any refills coffee wise, nor water wise. No utensils given, so I asked when food was placed. This was when my fluids were done, and I longed for my thirst was real. I never saw anyone, no one checked. Y'all need a bussers station so people can get what they need. Food looked good. Upon the first bite of chicken fried steak, I was bummed. A bland gravy coating an even blender steak and batter. Salt did not help. Tabasco did not help. Cardboard indeed. I ate my eggs, some of my steak, some of the homefries, and some of the bread. A local new arrived and partook of my food, which I then set out for him to finish. The waitress appeared, made a comment that there are always bee's which I wasn't sure it was snide, funny, sarcastic? Dunno. But I got myself to another chair far from table and bee. Got my bill, paid and left thirsty. I suggest Bertie lou' s down river if you want to dine, as they actually take the time to keep you hydrated, caffinated, and well fed with a much more interesting menu and fun food. In the meantime, work the glitches out with your busser, and season your food. Bon apetite.

My husband and I stopped in at Fat Alberts for breakfast. There were 2 breakfast specials, I had 1 and he had the other. Both were very good. Very personable waitress!

We liked the food, a lot. The cook knows what he's doing. Service was fast and friendly. There is no decor to speak of, so don't go looking for a cute, quaint experience. This is a very good, functional, well made breakfast in a decidedly not-fancy place. The cook will work up whatever you want, basically, but the menu has lots of tasty variety. Also, they don't take credit cards, so bring cash or check (the last place on Earth that takes checks). We live in the neighborhood, so we'll be going back frequently.

Loved the atmosphere of the place. The server was the biggest disappointment who was stand off-ish and never offered a refill. They seemed pleasant to the regulars. The food was worth it overall for the entire experience. Really liked the jam for the toast. Potatoes were amazing and not saturated in oil. I would return for the food but that server needs brushing up on how to serve and probably general empathy wouldn't hurt too.

Very good omelets. Fast and furious service to get you fed and out as this is a small place and gets busy. If you want to enjoy yourself, come in on a week day morning and then you won't feel rushed to leave. We have been here many times with kids and the food is consistently average to above average. Cash only.

I've always liked Fat Albert's, but my last experience soured me. It will be my last visit. The food was decent, not outstanding, the waitress was extremely rude and no coffee refill. Don't waste your time. Go to Genie's down the street instead.

It's been a while since we last came here and the food is as good as ever. I had one of the specials, Italian sausage, mushrooms and gravy over their homemade biscuits and my husband had pancakes, sausage and eggs. Both were great!

Cute little place and easy to find from downtown Portland. The breakfast burrito is a nice big size and tasty. My only complaint is they cut the potatoes too big and they really aren’t crispy enough. My husband had the grinder omelet and said the same about the potatoes. Diced means small cuts, guys. These are huge pieces. And they taste a bit dried out. The gravy was lackluster. It’s a solid B.
Voted best hangover brunch by Willamette Week
Yes you heard it go in looking like you have a hangover and the water and coffee keeps pouring! Plus Weekend specials almost always include Pancakes or french toast topped with seasonal fruit Like peaches or strawberry's. Local Coffee and Grand central breads and real butter plus fresh ingredients makes this an AAA plus place for me!
