Try the sake sampler. The handrolls are enormous and delicious. Service was swift and professional. Can't wait to go back to Philly and eat there again. Saw only one roll with cream cheese - because, who would use cream cheese in a roll, really?

I admit it. I'm a sushi lover AND somewhat of a sushi snob. When a friend recommended we stop into a place he'd actually eaten at a few hours earlier, I was intrigued and decided to go with him there. We'd just arrived before the "cutoff" of 10:30PM and were seated by a rather polite and friendly hostess and sat at a clean, modern looking table with napkins, chopsticks, dipping and serving dishes and a prompt waitress who showed up with a smile. As I looked at the busy sushi bar and the seemingly content customers around me, I listened to the suggestions of both my friend and the waitress. We collectively ordered the recommended crunchy salmon rolls, shrimp teriyaki rolls, another recommendation: the "crunchy" spicy tuna rolls (we were in a crunchy mood evidently) and I ordered a 2 piece order of unagi no negiri sushi (ok, I'm showing off my poor Japanese skills - eel sushi pieces). Since my friend and I opted to have sencha (green tea), we drank the tea (which arrived immediately upon request) and in less than five minutes, we had our sushi. Wonderfully arranged on our plates, we put some wasabi into our little dishes, added some soy sauce and went to town. The crunch version of the spicy tuna and the salmon rolls were new to me (I usually have tuna as tekka maki and the salmon negiri style) and both were amazingly fresh and tasty. The shrimp tempura rolls were very good but similar to what I've had in other places - not amazing but definitely worth ordering. The unagi (eel) however... When I say they were the BEST unagi sushi pieces ever, I am NOT exaggerating in the least. Firm, almost smoky with a refreshingly good eel sauce... I was in love!!! Since they were about to close we didn't linger (though they NEVER attempted to rush us out). I WILL be back and if I can be, I'll be back often with others. So far, this is the best sushi I've had in the Greater Philadelphia area and I highly recommend it for the beautiful eclectic mod-Japanese styling, the cleanliness, the friendly staff and above all the sushi!

My wife Barbara (my erstwhile dinner companion) and I had lunch at this Japanese restaurant while waiting for our room to be ready at the nearby Morris House Hotel. Barbara generally loves these uncooked experiences more than I do, but with BBQ pork, shrimp tempura and chicken teriyaki also on the menu and a good series of wines and beers available, there was plenty to keep me engaged. Barbara really liked the California rolls that came with her Bento box of vegetable tempura but she absolutely loved the Mochi Ice Cream that is a soft concoction made from sticky rice with an ice cream filling. As I said, she loved it while I found it kind of squishy which made me kind of squeamish.Barbara also liked her edamame. As my lunch special, they offered two generous items from the kitchen and I chose the shrimp tempura and chicken teriyaki, both delicious. I not only cleaned my plate but had fun with some of my wife's vegetable tempura, especially the broccoli pieces. The decor is interesting...a kind of blue wave modern look (needs to be seen to adequately describe it). Tables in this narrow place, however, were too close together for my comfort, though they certainly jam in a lot of seating (including at the Sushi bar) in such a small venue. The timing was poor. Both the timing of setting up our already open table until every piece of cutlery was obsessively set and the stop and start (slow) timing of bringing our meals. And PLEASE lose the awful music...a kind of modern top forties rock that could be playing right now on certain stations in Japan.

Fat salmon is a wonderful place to visit. High quality ingredients, prepared when you order. It is beautifully designed menu and space. Creative innovative. Just get here and try it out for yourself. Welcoming staff!

I got the small size of the lunch special of a California Roll and a Spicy Tuna Roll, with salad (or you can get soup) - all for $9! Well worth it.

We had edamame to start, a large hot saki, spider roll and Haku roll ( I think). The service was great- no rushing- the food was very good. This was not my first time there and will not be my last.

Always crowded for dinner. Sushi very fresh and well prepared. Intimate atmosphere. Not great selection of wines. Friendly service. Can take-out.

Ambiance is typical for a sushi joint. I ordered seaweed salad for an app, which was really good. For main dish, I ordered the Dancing Vampire, Salmon Yaki and Spicy Fuka. All three rolls were good, but somewhat average. Fish didn't stand out much, and flavors were rather bland. Overall, a good place, could be better.

Looking for Sushi in a traveling city can be difficult as this is one food item you do not want to risk having a bad encounter. The luncheon specials brought us to the Fat Salmon for the first time while visiting Philadelphia. It was worth every penny which doesn't sound like much because the specials are cheap. We will definitely return when we are back in the area. Generous portions and friendly service are reasons to return.

Came here on a whim with my husband and had some interested and different sushi rolls. I would definitely come again.

Shashimi and nigiri were very fresh. Great presentation. I enjoyed the modern atmosphere. Friendly service. I will come back again.

Love this modern sushi restaurant with a sexy feel! Delicious asian menu with excellent sushi, service and ambience.

by far, I have been a fan for a long time, when they were still at spruce st. it is really good sushi, great variety, but not too much. service can take long (sometimes for no apparent reason), but it is always worth the wait!!

it was great, the place was beautiful and had a great atmosphere. the music they played was excellent, whoever works the radio there has a great taste in music. and of course, the sushi was amazing. it was just great in every way, I'll definitely be back soon!

This place is a killer deal. Downtown Philly. It’s got some style but is mostly casual. I was there right at opening on a Sunday evening, and was second in a line of three –t he hostess took forever to get us seated – dealing with phone calls and such – the girl behind me threw a lot of attitude but I could also tell she comes there a lot. Service was a little distant and slow but killer deal! I got an appetizer that merged sushi with ceviche – delicious! And a great roll. Cheap wine too. I would come here ALL THE TIME if I lived in Philly.

The dining room is excellent with crisp whites and bluish accents, conveying an air modernity and attention to detail. The sushi and teriyaki are each outstanding, combined with great service makes for an excellent establishment.

I tried Fat Salmon based on all the good reviews. Rather disappointing. Maybe I missed something. I went for the gyoza, a staple of Japanese fare. When they say "fried" here they don't mean pan fried, they mean deep fried. Okay, I ordered them fried so I ate them. Bland. Decided to try the steamed gyoza. Only slightly better. Tried the udon soup. Hardly any noodles whatsoever and average flavor. Waited a long time for everything, too. Service friendly but erratic. Probably won't be back.

Great sushi and experience all around. Can't go wrong. If you aren't from the area, there is a parking garage down the road a few hundred feet for $10. Plenty to see around the restaurant. Reasonably priced and portioned. Will be back.

we stopped her for lunch while visiting historic sites, liberty bell, and independence hall a few streets away. We had 4 people in our party and were able to get a seat within a few minutes - only a few open seats when we got there around noon. Service and food was good - lots of sushi options and lunch specials available. Lighting was a little dark (seems like lot of restaurants are doing this now....hard to read menu!) but overall nice location/atmosphere.

Great eatery for after the Walnut Theatre. Great Sushi. Had to wait a little to long for food to arrive.

Loved the look of this place, and very pleasant hostess and server. The agadashi soup was one of the best I've ever had, super fresh ingredients and taste. Then we ordered too much sushi, based on the servers recommendations, that had fried seafood (softshell crab was overly crusted with a really thick and greasy tempura batter) and WAY too many mayonaissy toppings. It's rare I feel grossly full after a japanese dinner, but even the next morning I woke up groaning from spicy fatty excess. We should have kept it cleaner and simpler, so good to know for next time. I will definitely give it another try and stick with lighter menu options. Agadashi soup for sure!

The food is great and it has a nice edgy ambience while still feeling cozy. Their chirashi is very good, the rolls are inventive and the fish was fresh as could be. Great date place.

I love this place been coming here for year even when it was on locust st. ❤️🍣 If you love sushi you will love Fat salmon I know I do.

Fat Salmon is a solid sushi restaurant. Their sushi was very fresh and the taste was on par with any other respectable sushi restaurant. The presentation was beautiful with good sized portions while maintaining a decent price. The Fancy Sushi was probably the prettiest piece of sushi I have ever put into my mouth, and the Tofuholic sushi was probably the best piece of the night. The jewel of the evening was definitely the appetizer. We had the Spicy Tuna Naked Gyoza, which was just the perfect amount of crisp and spice - phenomenal! The atmosphere left nothing to be desired either; modern and intimate. I would definitely return.

The rolls were unique and delicious. The fish was fresh and tasty. The ambiance is second to none. I stopped in on a whim while traveling on business and enjoyed the food so much, I've been back twice since my first visit.

I go frequently, always good, prices reasonable. Good service. Very crowded on weekends. Make a reservation !

I've been to Fat Salmon many times over the last 10 yrs, never had a bad meal. I've been to Morimoto twice - I'd rather go to Fat Salmon. I think the flavor of the food is better, and the prices are waaayy better! I've had many items on the menu, but usually go with the Lunch Special #1. Always fresh, always flavorful.

Fresh and delicious food! We ordered the sushi and sashimi boat for two : reasonably priced for an excellent quality and variation. Ordered the Mr french kiss as well, for a speciality twist: highly recommended. Do reserve a table unless you want to end up sitting at the bar; which unfortunately though beautifully decorated, is kind of crammed. I wish the staff were a little less rigid: I asked to change seats from the bar to a table, since quite a few opened up, however the waitress refused to seat us at the table because we didn’t have a reservation, and those tables remained empty till closing time.

The sushi platter for two is a great deal. The place has a fun ambience as well. For more pictures and commentary, check out www.gustatori.com.

This was my first visit to Fat Salmon and it exceeded my expectation. I wanted a place conducive for talking but also served great food. This restaurant was the perfect combination of both. I'm definitely going back!

My husband and I stopped here after the flower show on a Sunday evening. We have tried several sushi restaurants and I must admit, this place is pretty good. We were seated right away and was given water while we waited for our server. Our server was awesome! He gave great suggestions and knew the menu front and back. We ordered 4 different sushi rolls as well as their Red Snapper Sashimi and we loved every single thing! We also ordered two different flavors of Mochi ice cream and we raved about it all night! Definitely give this place a try if your in town!

When you walk into Fat Salmon, you immediately know it's going to be a different kind of sushi night! They have a playbook for their menu - awesome! And the uniqueness and character continues in the rolls, from Japanese fried chicken to eggplant to tempora mussels on sushi! Not only unique combos but great food. A must do in Philly

We've thought about eating her on our semiannual trips to Philly for a couple years. Glad we finally did. The sushi was excellent, wonderful service.

I love this placez nice ambient. Great sushi and drink and great price too. The service was courteous , highly recommend.

I've eaten here several times, and was excited to take my wife here on Friday night. To be fair we didn't have a reservation, but what happened was absolutely ridiculous. We walked in around 7:30 p.m., the hostess said they were booked but we could wait for an open table or bar space. As I walk back to use the restroom, I noticed three open tables of 2, and an Open Table of 6 in the back. When I mentioned this to the hostess, she said that she was holding these for reservations. Over the next 35 minutes the three tables of two became 5 open tables of 2, and yet she still refused to seat anybody waiting. Had she set the two couples that were waiting, us included, she still would have had 3 open tables for those that had reservations. We most likely would have finished our meal within that 45 minutes to an hour, but she refused to seat anybody. When I mention this to her, she got an attitude and asked if I wanted my name removed from the reservation wait list. When I told her I was leaving, she simply said fine. Not exactly a friendly way of turning someone away. We walked up the street to Aki at 1210 Walnut St where we had really good all you can eat Sushi. Read my review there.

OMG. I've eaten sushi all over the world and Fat Salmon Sushi is right up there with the very, very best! Smooth, efficient, attentive service. Fair pricing $$ to $$$. The decor is Philly eclectic, but soothing and condusive to a great evening out in downtown Philly! Thanks to all the staff there for your excellent suggestions. The yellowtail was buttery smooth and ocean fresh. Yum. You're on my everytime I visit Philly list!!

We went to Fat Salmon after reading numerous online reviews of Philadelphia Japanese restaurants. Their sushi menu seemed to stray from the norm, and the atmosphere with the blue lit "wave" wall seemed ideal for a date. We had a 5:15 reservation on a Saturday, and during our dinner, we saw several people turned away. Book a reservation if you want to go. The food was pretty amazing. The portion sizes were larger than any sushi establishment we have visited (and we go pretty frequently to new places), with slightly lower pricing than we are used to. We usually spend about $65 - $70 on 5 rolls, and here it was $56. The food did not disappoint. We ordered Locust, Blossom, Mr. Shiro (waitress recommendation), Fuka and a Lost Rainbow Roll. The Fuka and Blossom were tied for my favorite, while my husband fell in love with the chili soaked Mr. Shiro - a roll unlike anything I have ever had. It truly was a one of a kind roll. I liked the blossom because of an airy puff of wasabi something on top that really rounded out the mouth-feel of the roll. The service was standard - not much to say there. The hostess had a bit of a elitist air about her when we checked in, and I saw it with her and others as well. She seemed as if she thought she was the "Great and Powerful Oz," wielding power over who got to dine. Our waitress was excellent though - very pleasant, good suggestions, and just the right amount of checking in. The service as a team was great - we had different people who refreshed our tea and water when needed, and our table was bussed quickly. The whole staff seemed to be "at our service." We will definitely be going back when we are in Philly. The ambiance was great (although it didn't fill up until we were leaving, at which point it was a little overwhelmingly full), the food was the star, and there are so many things we want to go back and try.

Called to see what time Fat Salmon was open until for lunch and was told 2:30 but they seat until 2:15 and the kitchen stays open until 2:45 so we raced over and arrived at 2 thinking we had plenty of time. Quickly looked over the menu and ordered several appetizers and a few different kinds of sushi as well as sake. Our apps came out all over the place as they were ready which made it seem like we were being rushed but okay not a big deal. As we started trying the different apps and drinking our shared pitcher of hot sake to warm up, we decided to order another pitcher since the kitchen would be closing soon. This was at 2:20 pm. Waiter returns apologetically at 2:25 pm stating the kitchen is now closed and they cannot make any hot sake. Huh? Ok, could we please have a pitcher of Nigori (cold sake, no prep necessary) and again the answer is no. Kitchen is closed. I wasn’t aware the kitchen had to make cold sake and mind you, our sushi was literally just delivered to the table at that moment. What if there was a problem with our food? As it turns out there was many problems. The Veggie Gyoza was overcooked and soggy, with several pieces falling apart before we even touched it. Chicken Katsu was overcooked and dry to the point that it looked like leather inside and the sauce was like A1, not real Katsu sauce. The sushi was just okay, but pretty lackluster for what they call specialty rolls. Miso soup and salad were fine but how can you mess that up? The server was nice enough but what’s the point of asking how our food is when there is no one to correct it since the kitchen is closed? How does a kitchen close when food is still being served?? Clearly Fat Salmon doesn’t care if your food is prepared to your liking because they just close the kitchen 20 minutes early while several people are just receiving their food or still eating. We left exactly 32 minutes after arriving without dessert that we would have liked and within an hour we both got horribly sick. I won’t go into details but we didn’t eat anything else all day so it was definitely the food at this establishment. Absolutely the worst dining experience I’ve ever had and we will never return.

Of traditional Japanese this restaurant has very little. The predominance of stodgy California rolls is surprising and the Sushi/Sashimi offering very small and not overly good quality. In addition they promote BYOB on the web site and then deny that in the Restaurant. Possibly a Good place for a college campus but does not stack up in the Philadelphia restaurant scene.

Very modern decor and excellent sushi -- however the restaurant took a late seating reservation from us and then promptly tried to rush us through dinner...If being seated toward the end of the evening is a problem then they should not take a late reservation. The waiter told us kitchen would be closing and we needed to order immediately...very disappointing.

Always excellent and totally fresh fish. Beautifully prepared and plated. What more could one want? At lunch time, they were able to accommodate my grandchild's stroller and we were able to find food for her, too.

Had a quiet Thursday evening dinner at FSS. The sushi was very good and we had a nice, window table. Well located little restaurant....would visit again.

The sushi was nice and fresh. Portions were good and service was excellent. The restaurant is rather small and the seating is a bit tight for my liking. I wouldn't hesitate recommending and will return.

First time at restaurant and had a good meal. After an afternoon at a play, stopped by as they opened. Had a good California roll along with some very tasty sushi. I would try this restaurant again. Dinner for 4 people came to $120 with drinks.

Friendly staff in this tiny, dark sushi joint off Washington Square. After reading great TA and yelp reviews, my husband and I thought our entrees were just above average. The rice was off and none of the fish really popped, although it was all fresh. what we ate: agedashi tofu nigiri salmon, tuna, fluke, shrimp, and yellowtail spicy tuna roll california roll (yeah, part of the lunch special) miso soup salad Wouldn't rush back.

Delicious sushi, great ambience, good service, and affordable prices! Love the vampire dragon roll which had a sweet and spicy kick to it!

I have dined in and also had take out from Fat Salmon. The place is not overly big but there is place at the bar to eat. The interior definitely has a modern, uptempo feel. I am a big fan of the place. It has a funky/trendy atmosphere with mostly patrons mostly in their late 20s and 30s. We ordered take out the other night and it costs $48 for edamame, a salad and 4 different kinds of sushi rolls. It's not cheap, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's crazy expensive either. We are big fans of the the Volcano roll and their Spicey Tuna roll. I would steer clear from Blossom roll as it wasn't very good. It's definitely a good take out or dine-in option.

calming atmosphere and not stuffed with tables!! sushi was fantastic., so fresh and different combinations!! can't wait to go back!!! service was acceptable. definitely a must try!! a great area of the city with other things to do before or after!! Can't wait to go back

My husband and I went here for our date night a few nights ago. We've been searching for a good sushi place in the city and finally found it!! We got the Sushi and Sashimi for two. It comes with soup and salad, and we were able to substitute one of the rolls for the Hako roll (seriously, my husband said it's the best roll he has every had! Thanks you waitress for the recommendation). It was so fresh!! We left full, satisfied, and with leftovers. The staff was so friendly and our water glasses were never empty. Can't wait to go back.

A sushi restaurant just a half a block from my office is so tempting, but I've eaten lunch here twice and I just have to say... "meh." The service is good, and the place is so stylish, but the sushi/sashimi is sort of bland, watery. Is this because I just vacationed in Hawaii and had really fresh sushi in places full of Japanese diners? Not sure. But this place is just average. My daughter likes it and so do a couple co-workers... so maybe it's just me (and my friend Kathy)... (and my friend Dana)... Maybe it's not just me.

I love Fat Salmon. The food it delicious and the atmosphere is really cool. I usually come for lunch, since I work close by. I can't speak for the dinner service, but during lunch, the service is usually pretty slow. If you want to come for lunch, definitely call ahead and pick it up.

Having eaten sushi all over this country, I was delighted to find that the freshest and most generous portions were to be found in a restaurant near my home. I was introduced by a friend married to an Asian whose daughter had first brought him to Fat Salmon. Especially good was their special tuna sushi. They also really know how to season their food. Highly recommended. Best late at night as can be difficult to get in at other hours.

Amazingly surprised by the variety and the flavor of the different kinds of rolls you can have in this restaurant! I've never had sushi before and this restaurant made me fall in love with it! The soy sauce with the wasabi, an endless list of types of sushi rolls -Philly, Dragon and Lava are some of the names-, and everything was delicious. Besides, you can have fried ice cream too! And they're HUGE, literally. The mixture of the sweet soft favors of the ice cream with the salty and crispy of the outside... it was just awesome. The place is cozy and quiet, so perfect for any kind of visitor, couples, friends... make sure you're good with the chopsticks though! I learned how to use them in this restaurant!

Not a big sushi eater but it was really good. Make a reservation. Very small place so we waited quite a while for a table.

Arrived for dinner with reservations. The restaurant is small and looks more like a busy, stylish lounge than a relaxing eatery. There were two empty tables and at least one free spot at the bar, nonetheless we were made to wait over twenty five minutes, and some people turned away, even though period grace for the previous seating was long past. Once seated, service was pleasant and efficient. Our attendant was gracious and knew the items on the menu. Prices were appropriate for the quality and portions and everything arrived fresh and promptly.

Our family (all adults) thought the sushi was the best they ever had. Service was fine and prompt. The only criticism is our table was in the back alcove which afforded privacy but didn't give us the ambiance of the restaurant. The first table we were directed to was worse (it was across the aisle from our final table) but 2 of us were facing the bathrooms and back part of the server's area. Be sure to ask to sit out front.

I love it here! the sushi is always fresh. The servers are friendly. The atmosphere here is romantic. It makes for a great date night.

It has been a while since I have had decent sushi and this place was very good. We were staying in town for a conference and came to eat here every night. We simply could not get enough. The fish was fresh and well prepared. They had a sake sampler that we truly enjoyed. Too bad they did not had my favorite Japanese beer (Orion). You should make reservations.

Went here on a cold, rainy night for some sushi and hot sake. Delicious and great ambiance! Service was perfect and sushi was some of the best in Philadelphia.

Here with my wife during our two day philly trip. The spider roll was awesome. The restaurant had a blue mood light which makes all the photos look great. Friendly staff too~

My favorite sushi place. The sushi is consistently fresh and attractively served, with a huge selection of really creative sushi rolls. They have dishes for non-sushi eaters, as well. It's small and really fills up, so reservations are essential.

My family and I went to this restaurant for dinner. It was quite crowded, as I understand it typically is. The service is quick and friendly. Food choices are numerous, and a large selection of sake choices. Portions are on the generous size, and everything is fresh and tasty. We will definitely be back.

I got take out sushi from this restaurant last week and fell in love. When picking my food up, I couldn't help but notice the quaint, eclectic ambiance of the restaurant. I will definitely be coming back for a sit down meal. A great place for a business lunch or a cute date night. Loved the food quality and will definltely be returning!

This was our first visit, and since EJ likes sushi we went to the Fat Salmon. It was everything we expected it to be - varied menu and very well prepared and service was great. Well decorated, pleasant atmosphere and moderately noisy. We’ll be back.

On Janary 14, 2021 I ordered a take-out meal from Fat Salmon. This is not the first time I have ordered from this sushi restaurant. In the past, I have noticed that it seemed to me that what I was eating was not as fresh as it should be. However, I craved sushi this evening, so ordered a total of $50 worth of sushi for dinner at home this evening. I got home and unpacked everthing, laid it out on a separate plate to eat and dug in. At one point my tooth felt something very hard in my mouth. I first thought it was a piece of plastic, but it turned out to be stale brown rice. My other pieces of sushi were also made with brown rice that was at least 1 day old, given its hardness. What is laughable is that brown rice is the cheapest of the ingredients that go into sushi. I ask myself, "If 'Fat Salmon' is skimping on brown rice, is there something else that they are skimping on in the sushi that I didn't notice?'" If stale brown rice is the only item past its "sell-by date", this is certainly an example of a restauranteur being "penny wise and pound foolish". I called the restaurant and spoke to the senior person there tonight, but his English was so basic there was no point in pursuing the matter with him.

While sushi already gives away the style of the food, fat Salmon finds a way to make them little different and it really works. Smoked octopus salad is good, and presented well. Also box type sushi is great looking and tasting treat. Location of the restaurant is prime and service is great. I would recommend it if you in a mood for sushi.

Ok, I've had a lot of sushi in my day, but this has to be my favorite spot to get it! My friend went here a few times and I was always so envious of her food that she decided to take me here to try for myself. Oh mylanta! I loved it! So fresh! So tasty! It was freakin' amazing! I would definitely recommend this place because I haven't had anything better. I'm sure there are tons of places in the country that are better, but I have yet to try them. I think that at this point, the only way to get better sushi is to hit up Japan =0) Maybe one day!

Fat salmon... Their salmon melts in your mouth.. My friends and I ordered Sashimi for two. The portion was awesome and we were stuffed!

I can't really say anything was bad about Fat Salmon Sushi, it was rated in the top 5 on another site, but I can't say that it falls within that top five. A very small converted row home. Service was good, not excellent which is par for the city. No refills on drinks, trying to drop the check before ordering dessert, friendly but no suggestions for our first time visit. Clearly the fish was fresh, and the rolls were good tasting. Have had better at Vic's in Springhouse or Ooka in Montgomeryville.

We went for a bite after a show. Everything was fresh and delicious. The service was very good. I recommend the house sake after having the tasting!

I dont live in the city so I have only been here twice. The sushi is really yummy, I only chose from the Fat Salmon Special rolls because the rest of the sushi were just the plain regular ones. I recommend this place.

Had a nice dinner in this modern sushi restaurant. It was fresh, well plated and interesting. Service was good but not excellent. Definitely worth trying.

Four of us had dinner at Fat Salmon in their aquarium table. No real fish except for the Sushi but the murals are good in this restaurant. They have a slate of interesting rolls - We had Mr. French Kiss, Super Dragon and a platter of others with house Nigori Sake and really enjoyed it.

On the bright side the apps (edamame, seaweed salad) were great! Green tea ice cream was great. The tuna sashimi and nigiri were good but, the rolls-not so much...they lacked good flavor combinations and were mostly cooked varieties. The wait staff were not very helpful either. This restaurant is obviously geared towards the millennial crowd and trendy fair. Probably a good place to hang with friends but not for the serious sushi connoisseur. I don't normally rate this low but, this is poor quality sushi for a higher level price point.

Probably the most innovative sushi restaurant I have ever come across. Wide choice of sushi ( even for vegetarians), unusual combinations, wonderful flavors and excellent presentation! First time sushi eaters- This is a place for you! Sushi Lovers - You cant miss dining at this restaurant! The prices are moderate and in a good location.

This was a good sushi place for Philly. Some of the combination rolls were nothing special and some, like the tofu roll (yes tofu roll) were very good. We had a party of 6 so there was a lot to try. I don't remember the names of the rolls. However, I had negiri too and it was fresh and decent. The uni was very good. One negative thing about this place for me personally was the rice. It was too soft and milly. This should be the star ingredient and it missed the mark. The sake were also ok. Do the sake flight it's a good deal and the sakes are better quality than the house sake which we also had. Overall it was a fun dinner but I will not be rushing back here very soon.

Loved this sushi place. Everything my friend and I ordered was fresh and delicious. Seaweed salad, miso soup, sashimi and sushi rolls (rainbow) were all excellent. The place itself is lovely. The service quick and attentive. Highly recommend.

This is my go-to sushi place! I stop in here for lunch sometimes when I'm alone or with another person; their lunch specials are a great bargain. Dinner is also good. The sushi never fails to be fresh and delicious. There are a lot of great creative specialty rolls on the menu. My fiancé, who is not a big sushi fan, usually orders the grilled sea bass or some other cooked item, while I pig out on sushi. Prices are reasonable for such high-grade sushi. It's a small place and tends to fill up at mealtimes. My biggest complaint is that they're not open for lunch on weekends -- that would be my go-to place.

Great restaurant. Friendly service. Wide variety of sushi (although they clearly focus on the 'spicy' rolls). Kitchen / sushi chefs were a bit slow, though.

This place was amaze-balls! The Naked Tuna appetizer with pico changed my life. The Tuna sandwich was awesome and the Vampire roll was a sweet surprise. I want to go back NOW!

We visited this resturant in december with some friends. We ordered different type of sushi but DRAGON ROLLS and FUKA ROLLS were the best. Unfortunatly i left Phily, i miss this place so much.

Went here on date night and enjoyed the meal from start to finish. The restaurant is a bit small, but it was perfect as it was not over crowded or noisy. The sale was very tasteful, with quite a few options. The miso ginger dressing for the salad is the best I’ve ever had. I’ve even gone back just to get little containers of the dressing. Wish they sold bottles of it! This is a great place for healthy options as well. My boyfriend loved the shush, we have been back quite a few times. There was plenty of options for people who do not wish to eat sushi as well.

very tasty and unusual sushi 🍣! excellent place! good service and not very expensive. we have come without reservation and waiting for a short time. we put to the bar. really recommend!

Favorite sushi spot in the city! Servers are really nice and chill. Great place for American sushi. Huge plates, you'll be super full and want to sleep after.

After a lapse of several months, we returned to find the sushi to be very good, the salads crisp, and the edamame fine. The dumplings have downsized from six now down to four pieces. Service is usually attentive.

Perhaps, the weakest link was Maitre D'. The hostess made us wait even though there were no people in front of us and we had reservations. She took time to service people with take-outs before asking us any questions. I had a chance to observe her work as we sat near the entrance and I saw that there were people with questions, wanting to pay, etc. waiting for a few minutes, while the place, the front entrance was not attended. The nights was not busy, either. Having said that, I have to say that our waiter was really knowledgeable and prompt. Overall, this is the best sushi restaurant we have visited in Philly so far. You won't go broke, either. There are such great options on the menu as sushi for 2, with 2 rolls and 12 pieces of sushi for $35. We also ordered creamy scallops, which were excellent, and wasago. They have a roll that they make at the restaurant, which is an unimposing combination of 3 fish (I forget what it is called). All the sushi were excellent. Udon was good, and not too salty as is usually the case. I would definitely visit it again!

The sushi is fresh and the bento boxes for lunch are both really good. You will need 1.5 hour to finish lunch. They are really slow in getting you your check.

We had the most amazing experience at Fat Salmon Sushi!!!! While staying in Philadelphia on December 30th, we felt the need to eat some sushi. Our first choice was another sush restaurant on Walnut Street - that place was a disaster and we walked out. As we made our way down Walnut Street, we asked two young medical residents what they would recommend. They told us Fat Salmon! So, we ventured north and the place was packed. However, the hostess spoke with the manager, who had a reserved table that would arrive one hour from our arrival time. We told the manager if he could get us the food quickly, we would eat and be out before his reservation arrived. We ate, left and thanked the manager. He was one of the most accomodating manager I have ever met:) The food was incredibly fresh and we left very happy. Oh, by the way, the service was amazing too. Gold stars and A pluses all around. Thank you Fat Salmon Sushi for feeding us and treating us like royalty. I highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely visit it on my next trip to Philadelphia.

We wanted good sushi after a long day driving into Philly before the busy day visiting all the historic district attractions the next day. The restaurant was a walking distance from our hotel on Chestnut Street, which sealed the deal as parking is horrendous in the area! We were lucky to get a table for four without reservation and to have attentive service through the evening. We ordered tempura (huge servings!), select feature rolls (all absolutely delicious but not proportional to the large tempura serving) and mochi ice cream and tempura ice cream to top it off. The decor is fun for kids to pay attention to while waiting for the food. Would we visit again? For sure as a family, not for a romantic evening.

Don't eat in fat salmon .I got so sick from I was throwing up all night . Dangerous place . be cautious.

We went to this sushi restaurant because we heard good things about it. Unfortunately it was a bad experience from start to finish. We were seated immediately but did not see a waiter for over 10 minutes. As it turned out there was only one waiter and the restaurant was simply undermanned. The waiter finally took our order. But before he did he told us all the menu items they were out of. Our choices were limited and the food was average tasting at best. There are better options for sushi in Phila the Fat Salmon.

Had a terrific meal here this week. This is the best sushi restaurant in Philly that I have been to so far. They give you big portions compared to some of the other sushi restaurants in Philly (Zuma). I felt like I got more than my money's worth. Make a reservation because it not a big place and it was full. Everything we ordered was fresh, and we left full. Definitely going back. Thank you for a great experience.

Best sushi I've had in Philly. Prices are on the higher side, but not too much compared to what you'd get at any other sushi place. I personally like to go for the specialty rolls, haven't had any of their other food. May run ~$70 for two people for a delicious meal.

Coming from out of town and having eaten here before, we ordered more than we could eat. Both times the food was tasty and the experience pleasant. There is a good selection of sake to start with as well as a wide selection of Japanese beer. The pork goyzu was not the best and unusually deep fried rather than pan fried. The Miso was average as were the main courses - the usual teriyaki and katsu found in most similar establishments. The suchi however is outstanding, large selection , unusual and innovative. On our next visit we will certainly focus on the suchi.

Decent fresh Japanese food in the downtown core..I had an $8 lunch special with 12 pieces... California and Spicy Tuna. The dining room is very loud.

Came there with friends, made a reservation, were seated immediately. The ambiance and decor are very nice. Some of us ordered from the kitchen and a others ordered just sushi rolls. they asked us if we wanted everything brought together, we said yes. The kitchen order took a reasonable amount of time probably 20-25 minutes, I was one of 2 people in the party that only ordered sushi, our food didn't come out until almost an hour passed from the time we ordered and after all others finished eating. And only after I inquired about it 50 minutes into the wait, they explained that sushi was running behind because they are busy. Food itself was pretty decent, and reasonably priced for center city. If you go during busy times make sure you have ample time to wait.

We really enjoy Japanese food and Fat Salmon truly fits the bill. The menu is varied however we ordered sushi and sashimi. The choice of rolls was excellen and unique. The sleeping volcano and lava rolls were among our favorites, especially if you like spicy food. The sashimi for one was an ample serving of a variety of beautifully prepared fresh fish. The atmosphere is intimate and cool. I also must add that the staff was very helpful with an order that included some dietary restrictions and menu adjustments. For that reason, Fat Salmon has also become our favorite for sushi take out as well.

Finest and freshest. Beautiful interior. Accessible but best to reserve if you want a table in the evening.

Sushi selection was great, delicious dinner, decent wine selection, cozy atmosphere. Very limited seating so reservations are recommended.

Everything was great. I especially enjoyed the fried tofu. Plus, the California roll was excellent too. It's only a couple of blocks from Constitution Square. Awesome customer service!

My friends who claim to be foodies like this place. I remember one bad experience and haven't been back, but decided to try it again today - this time for lunch. First of all I was put off by the smell of grease in the air - then I remember it was one of the things I didn't like last time. I don't like going back to work smelling like a greasy restaurant. Next, it seemed very inefficient and slow. At first there were only 3 tables full, yet it took over 5 minutes to be seated. It was another 10 until the waiter came over and after ordering it was 45 minutes until the lunch boxes arrived. There were lots of complaints about this, since people had to be back to work. I thought the idea of lunch boxes is that they were fast. There were 5 chefs at the sushi bar, so perhaps the kitchen is understaffed. Based on a bad sushi experience last visit, I decided to go with cooked food. I had the pork katsu and salmon teriyaki lunch box. It looked very nice. The pork and salmon were warm to almost hot, but oddly the veggies around them were refrigerator cold (I supposed they were to be warm or at least room temperature: asparagus, potato, carrots). Also, there was a fried mix of something (like a thick okonomiyaki pancake cut into chunks. Each side had one of these. I am sure they should have been at least reheated, since fried food cold like that isn't good. Besides that, one had raw, uncooked dough (or pancake batter) in it. My guess is these boxes with veggies and the batter things were probably prepared long ago and refrigerated and were supposed to be reheated or microwaved before adding the meats, which were getting cold from the veggies they were lying on. Odd experience and just not right. Before leaving I went to the bathroom. One of the chefs was there ahead of me. What I noticed though was the sink was dry, so either he was just inspecting it or didn't wash his hands before exiting. I couldn't decide on poor or average, so gave them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps it was an off day. But now I have 2 less than happy experiences out of 2. I won't be returning for a 3rd try.

Walked to this location when I was visiting our office in Philadelphia. Great quick sushi lunch! It was busy - a good sign (lots of people like it).

Had a great dinner here in a cool restaurant one very hot August night. Seven of us and we all loved. I had a salmon teriyaki that was so delicious and so uniquely prepared. The sushi was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Very reasonably priced and the food and service were great! Lots of different options too. Need I say more?

The decor promises a quirky take on sushi and the friendly staff and ranks of sushi chefs don't disappoint. Unfortunately the food is not up to scratch. Rice was dry and the tempura ranged from 'baked' to flabby and soggy. There was a leaden taste of cooking fat about the tempura that was unappetising. On a Saturday evening a variety of drunk and boisterous tables made dining more of a chore than a pleasure. Possibly a good place for lunch or even take-out but certainly not an evening destination
Great sushi great price!!
Yumm!! One of the best sushi experiences I've had in a while. I live in NYC so the prices were AMAZING. Definitely would go back again. Loved the Spicy rolls, the Fancy Sushi and the dumplings.
