Great SF family Italian in NW PDX

By Dane94306 |

The staff are mostly family it seems and Jack (of famous Jackson Fillmore in SF) is usually on hand to help cook his specials. I love the chicken GOV (garlic, oil and balsamic vinegar) That is on the menu in SF, but not here, and they will make it for us if we give them a day or so notice. They truly seem like they love their customers and they make you feel like a regular even when you aren’t. In fact, they are super flexible about mixing and matching pastas fish sauces, et cetera. For example, if you like the way the seafood risotto special sounds but want it on penne, unless there are incredibly busy they will happily do it. Really like the fried calamari and want it on top of spaghetti? no problem. Some Highlights. Fresh pasta option when it’s available. All the fish dishes. New York steak. Verdura salad.Primavera salad. Artichokes in season. The wine is very well curated by Jack and his son-in-law Spencer. There is quite a range. You don’t have to break the bank, but they definitely do have some great high-end Italian wines for special occasions. Just like in SF, they give you this great complementary bruschetta, lots of tomato and garlic.

A very pleasant surprise

By U028477 |

My son and I were visiting Portland to do a little fishing and had booked a room at the Silver Cloud Inn (nice place) near the corner of 23rd and Vaughn. 23rd street is a very popular destination, but we were staying at the north end of the street where there are fewer restaurants and shops. I asked the hotel staff for a dinner recommendation and the nearby Fillmore Trattorias was suggested. We walked in without a reservation and it was immediately apparent that the restaurant was very busy and that a reservation would have been advisable. Nevertheless, after agreeing that we could be in and and out in 1.25 hrs, we were seated ad given menus. We started dinner with a calamari appetizer, which was hot, tender and excellently seasoned. We also tried the fried goat cheese balls that were amazing. The restaurant also served us a small plate of bruschetta that was equally excellent. For mains, I ordered a chicken dish, dressed with tomato sauce and cheese on a bed of arugula. My son ordered the daily risotto special and we shared a bottle of wine. When staying a hotels a bit outside of prime locations, I seldom expect to find a nearby restaurant that I can rave about. Instead, you are more likely to find chain restaurants and fast food joints. The Fillmore Trattoria was none of these and was a very unexpected and pleasant surprise. The food was excellent, the service just right and the wine list extensive. I would suggest to anyone looking for a meal on 23rd street to go a little further towards the north end of the street and give the Fillmore Trattoria a try.

On the Cusp of Being So Very Good

By mdwpdx |

With just a little push, or a little less frantic kitchen due to the full house, this could be a gem. But each of the entrees were just a bit off (not bad, mind you, just not great). For example, the baked shrimp dish was imaginative and tasty, but very dry - it screamed for lemon which, after delivery, did indeed help. My wife's lamb chops were tasty, full of herbs and well cooked, but left a strange bitter taste. But the appetizers and dessert were terrific, and the portion sizes were just fine. The place is charming, situated in an old house in NW Portland. I chalk the shortcomings to a full house with two very large parties (which greatly added to the noise level). I'll be back to try it again; they deserve it. It might just be terrific.

More like a 4.5, but good

By tfizzle |

I had been wanting to go to this place for a while and finally found time with my son. the pastas are uniformly excellent and the veal sausage with mushroom penne was exceptionally good. Deep rich flavors, plentiful (I took some home), perfectly seasoned. The filet bites to start were also excellent, if not plentiful. The wine list is well chosen but you have to look hard for bargains. My guess is that the food is o well priced they have to make it up by charging just a little extra for the wine. I will return.

A dark winter night

By Deepwaterblue13 |

We arrived from out of town & staying across the street @ Holiday Express Inn. Their front desk suggested this restaurant. It IS ACROSS the street & it does serve Italian food. We made reservations, walked across very heavy rush hour traffic & found ourselves the first people to walk into this small open house with windows top to bottom. The night outside was dark, cold & rainy even with the outside patio fireplace all lite up to welcome us. We were seated @ a table for 2 in an attached chilly porch away from the main EMPTY dining room. This too had lots of windows & bare wood floors. Could see that w/ just 2 more people sitting nearby that noise is a issue. Heard their entire conversation & we were 2 tables away. We found ourselves needing to wear our down jackets the entire time we dined. Our waitress, Courtney, was pleasant while bringing us our menus & a couple glasses of Chianti for $15.50. She brought ONE slice of fresh bruschetta pomodoro which was truly delicious. The menu had very few options. That was a bad sign right there for some people. Everything is ala cart. Decided on the Funghi Salsicce, grilled fennel sausage w/ portobello mushrooms & white beans, for $19.75. Found it too spicy & a dish one could not eat a lot of. Boring. Therefore, left the table hungry. Very disappointed. Tried the Chicken Bartolommeo, tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushroom on a bed of arugula, for $19.75. It was satisfying but not filling. Portions are quite small. It wasn’t exactly our most favorite Italian dinner as some reviews have testified. Pictures are attached of these entrees. Total Amount for a two dish dinner was $55.00. While waiting for our bill to arrive, Jack wandered out to say hello. Sadly, found ourselves not wanting to recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Great meal and a fun evening

By Mary M |

We were staying next door at the Silver Cloud Inn and we didn't get in until late, so we wanted to find someplace near by for dinner. Well, we lucked out finding the Fillmore Trattoria because we had a wonderful time there! The owners/staff were so friendly from the moment we walked in the door until we left. The food was fabulous and reminded us of the food we had in Italy on another recent family trip. Everything from the appetizers and complimentary bruschetta to the main course to the desserts were delicious! And the chef even played the guitar when we requested it after dinner! Check out this new place in town and you won't be disappointed!

Good but not Great

By JeffB203 |

The outdoor fireplace felt incredible as we waited about 10 minutes for a table. The restaurant itself is fairly small but cozy. We tried the goat cheese ball appetizer. It was very tasty. My wife had the fish stew for dinner. It was very hot when it arrived. She thoroughly enjoyed it.... best she ever had. I had the chicken Parmesan. It was also quite good. I rated this place as good (4 stars) because the service was a little slower than I would have liked. They were very friendly but not very fast. I also think that the restaurant could offer bread as part of the meal. We don't drink but they do appear to have a nice wine list. Overall a good place. Give it a try. I am sure you will enjoy.

Worth a drive out of your way

By Professor56 |

When in Portland, we always dine here. Understated elegance in an unassuming building on a busy street, one might easily drive on--but that would be a mistake. Relatively small space with limited tables but open kitchen, family owned--the service and food are excellent. On occasion, salmon in the oven with bread crumbs is exceptional but not always on the menu. Red snapper is, though, and also a favorite although the sauce is a bit spicy. Shrimp in the oven with bread crumbs also superb--in fact, anything baked with bread crumbs is worth ordering. A gelato with an Americano nicely completes the meal. Full bar, modest wine list, pleasant attentive staff, including the chef who is often present in the dining room. Much competition in this trendy northwest Portland area, but this is a top option for sure.

Fabulous pasta

By Oldbackpack |

Absolutely the tastiest pasta we have ever experienced when travelling in the USA. We loved the food here and would highly recommend.

Not Good Value For Us

By william b |

We had dinner at this restaurant which was convenient to our hotel. We have no complaints about the service but do about the meals price. My meal consisted of a plate of five scallops with no starch or vegetables. Cost was $30. My wife had a snapper special which was good and did include some vegetables. the total price of the dinner for what we were served was not a good value.

Fantastic!

By AnnSisters_Oregon |

Best Italian food in town! We had tortellini, arugula salad, stuffed artichoke, prawns - and zabaglione for dessert. All was delicious!

Great Food, Nicely appointed interiors

By DayTrip239812 |

Visiting Portland after a 30 year hiatus. The food in this town is as good as ever. Among the places we've dined Fillmore Trattoria was a welcomed site. Victoria who is one of the partners transplanted to Portland with a new and upcoming restaurant named after Fillmore Street in San Francisco. Guitars, from her husband-chef adore the walls along with her original paintings. Dinner consisted of fried goat cheese with carmelized onions, gnocchi with Italian sausage, dessert was chocolate infused bread pudding. The food was delicious with just enough portions. We especially liked dessert. Highly recommend making the drive to NE Portland. It was worth the visit.

A very good dining experience

By DennisJA |

This restaurant was just across the road from our hotel and came highly recommended by the hotel's Reception staff. The recommendation was correct. We arrived on a reasonably busy night, without a reservation, but were quickly found a table. The service by the wait-staff was excellent. We ordered relatively simple pasta dishes which were tasty and well presented. The wine list produced some regional wines at very a reasonable price. The desserts were of the "to die for" variety. It will be on our list to return to on our next visit to Portland.

Great place for dinner.

By Rosie60956 |

The service was friendly. It is right next to the hotel where I stayed so I went there 2 nights in a row. They remembered me on the 2nd night! The food was excellent! This is a small, casual restaurant that is just plain good.

Great Food/Vibe

By richard g |

Loved the vibe and incredible friendly service. Had an amazing dinner and since we shared, we were able to try different dishes. Nice wine list. Have to go again! Great job guys 👍

Fantastico Fillmore Trattoria

By joliverkatz |

Finally, an ethnic Italian restaurant in PDX!! Fillmore is not fancy. It is just fabulous, simple Italian. After years of searching for a good "sauce" house, we found Fillmore in the Northwest. Great local ingredients prepared by a chef who understands simple Italian food. My only issue is a weak pour in the wine by the glass. No matter. This place is worth a visit is a great food city.

Best unknown local dining!!

By Souljerboy |

This is a small, quaint restaurant. The atmosphere is well lit, casual and fairly quiet so you can carry on a conversation easily. The food was surprisingly perfect. I loved the entirely open kitchen to see the dishes prepared by a great staff! I am very critical of cuisine and decided to take a chance. I am glad I did!! These were probably the best scallops I have eaten. Absolutely delicious Filet bites for an appetizer and they did not disappoint. If you are in the NW district, check this place out!!

Mixed

By KLH6519 |

On a warm night in Portland my husband and I visited the new Fillmore Trattoria while staying at the Silver Cloud Hotel nearby. Offering a small menu we struggled making a choice. My husband ordered the chicken salad (not what one would expect) and I ordered the tortellini. A small portion of bruschetta was brought to the table before our entrees were served; it was small and so-so. My husband's entree was a well prepared lightly breaded chicken breast on a tasty salad and my tortellini was very small, overcooked, and in a very thin white sauce. Water was served in very small glasses (without ice on a warm evening) and needed to constantly be refilled. The menu and preparation, at this stage, is inconsistent and needs the bugs worked out.

Surprisingly Good

By markwY4783QE |

Italian restaurants in America after spending a year or more in Italy usually is not good by comparison. So on a Friday night at the last minute when the usual Italian restaurants in Portland, like Nostrana, were booked, I was not optimistic that Fillmore Trattoria would be very good. I was wrong. The food was very tasty, the service friendly, there is parking across the street at the coffee place (which is closed during the dinner hour). The menu is not overly ambitious, the wine list interesting and the ambience reasonable. Try it and see if you do not agree.

Tasty entrees

By carney33 |

We stopped here because it was next to our hotel and we were tired from our trip. I also love Italian. First of all, the staff could not be friendlier, from the host to the waitress to the chef who even stuck his nose outside to thank us for coming when we were leaving! It is a small place with cozy decor. The wine list was very good. The entrees were awesome but the portions relatively small. Dinner also did not come with a salad or even bread of some kind to soak up the amazing sauces of the entrees. Just the small entree. I realize that quality is not the same as quantity, but...

Excellent

By keithfrady |

Best Italian food I've had in years! And, the service is excellent too! The waiter recommended a wine that we're still talking about!

Save your money.

By JJ |

Pretend Italian food. lousy service and ridiculous prices. Very disappointed ☹️ How did this place get four stars?

Bad night or terrible management?- Disorganization overshadows good food.

By Larry R |

After waiting nearly an hour for our antipasti platter our waitperson showed up to advise there was a "miscommunication" and they were out of antipasti. She asked if we wanted a different appetizer. A few minutes later, she appeared with our supposedly non-existent antipasti (did she forget to put the order in?). The promised bread, to hold us over, never arrived. After a while our pasta and seafood soup finally arrived, well beyond an hour after our arrival. The portions were decent and flavorful. We asked for to-go boxes. When we went to leave and asked for the boxes, they couldn't find them, but asked us to wait while they prepared new, small batches. More waiting, but nice gesture, I guess. The place was very busy on that Thursday night, and wait staff were kept scurrying. Our waitperson was not only taking orders, but preparing certain dishes, adding to her burden. Having waited to be seated (we had a reservation) and then waiting interminably for even our appetizer, it was a frustrating experience. The owner comped the appetizer and gave us a couple tiny samples of wine. It was a shame that the operation's disorganization overshadowed the food to ruin the experience.

Great Restaurant -

By Janice J |

We discovered Fillmore Trattoria while vacationing in Portland. We went in on a Saturday night, with no reservations, even though the restaurant was full, the owner created two seats for us by the bar. The service was great and the food was spectacular.

Really excellent taste, great service, perfect portions

By ckTraveler09 |

The service here was really great and we enjoyed the dishes a lot -- my dish was the gnocchi and the sauce had a wonderful flavor. Portions were modest but that was great as we really don't like it when restaurants serve way too much food that just goes to waste. It was plenty for us. The place is relatively small so I'd make a reservation. We actually shifted seats to a smaller table to make way so they could seat a larger party, but the staff was very courteous and gave us a free dessert for our trouble; to me that's a sign of good service, they were working very hard to make a good dining experience for their customers. Would definitely go there again.

Can't quit thinking of when I can come back!

By whidbeycj |

I am visiting my sister for the weekend, and they brought me to their favorite place to dine these days, and I can see why! The food was amazing, service outstanding, and the wine list good. My favorite was the fried goat cheese balls.... a taste of heaven, and finished with a fabulous tiramusu.

Best Italian food in Portland.

By Donbob48 |

As a pasta nut, I have tried many of Portland’s Italian restaurants but keep returning to see Jack and Spencer. From the warm greeting, great service and the best sauces anywhere, Fillmore is our favorite. We return again and again, and we are never disappointed.

Wonderful on every level...

By Kerry C |

I've been going to the Saint up the street and the Dragonfly around the corner for years and never noticed this place until this past Friday. Reservations in place, we took an early dinner with friends. Fantastic, just fantastic. Started with some of the small plates (the croquettes and another small plate, some olives, etc.). Moved into mains-my wife had the ravioli special and I had a spiced sausage pasta dish. Our friends had huge salads before their main. Great wine selection, served at the correct temperature (we had a Malbec). Absolutely wonderful service (thank you, Laura!) and a new great dining memory. Can't wait to go back! Highly Recommended!!

Would give this 5 stars but not quite perfect...

By Julie C |

Made a reservation for the patio - arrived 10 mins late and they were just about to give our table away. Had to wait 10 more minutes - but was fine. Service was very friendly and quite good if a little slow on the basics like water refills and wine pours. But our server and one of the owners, Spencer was knowledgeable and informative. Our stracitella bruschetta was amazing, the calamari were fabulous and the Snapper was a dream . We shared all three plates and a creative and delicious Tiramisu. Spencer suggested a nice Barbaresco for our dinner and it was a lovely choice. The only off taste of the night was when we discovered that the cocktail my husband ordered a Cin Cin and he added gin as the menu suggested was $17! The drink menu is a bit misleading on the pricing. It certainly wasn't worth $17. That being said - the food was so good - we are willing to return - but just not for cocktails!

Excellent food, staff & atmosphere

By bneuzil |

Great Italian restaurant with excellent food (gluten free options too!) great staff, nice wine selections and drinks too. Fantastic specials too. Every time we come to Portland, we make sure to eat here. Really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Very accommodating and able to explain their menu items well. Easy to find gluten free items. Great, great place. Don’t miss it!

Worth it

By Bruce M |

First off, the Fillmore is (currently) open on a limited schedule (Thursday to Saturday evenings only), and a reservation is pretty much obligatory. However, once we navigated that, our experience was very much worth it. The menu is focused, but the options are carefully considered and the flavours are deliciously balanced. We enjoyed the "diavolo" seafood option of the day with a selection of antipasti, plus an exquisite zabaglione for dessert. Outdoor seating was clean, sheltered, and well spaced. Our server was a delight. After a year at home, this was money well spent to get back to eating out.

Decent mid range italian

By baywanderer |

Not fancy but fairly good basic Italian cuisine. We were there on a Saturday night and service was slow but that was OK for us. Fairly nice atmosphere. If you are looking for value, this is a good bet.

Rustic Italian Home cooking

By Michael S |

What a pleasant surprise to hear Jack had moved from his San fran restaurant to PDX and opened up a comfortable small trattoria with Jack again behind the stove turning out the best rustic Italian food on the West coast. Every dish was perfect and the pastas were fresh and tasty. The speck carbonara was great The seafood risotto perfect and his special slow cooked beef stew really clinched it for me. Nice wine selection with off menu specials-just ask! Welcome to Portland Jack.

Exceptional !

By Dave R |

This is a real welcome to the outer part of the NW. This place has an amazing menu, every item is well chosen to compliment the wine list, we had a very memorable dinner here. They have been open for 6 months and it's very difficult to get seating. Highly recommend coming here. It has the same layout as the previous place, it has a much better vibe now, still has the outside fireplace which is warm and inviting on a cold portland rainy night. The service is impeccable and the owners are really nice people who care about the customer. Enjoy!

Just Average

By Farq51 |

Ate a late dinner at the Fillmore last weekend and found the food very average. I had the smoked chicken gnocci and they arrived swimming in a thin, soupy sauce. My wife had chicken tortellini and wasn't impressed. We both thought our portions were quite small. We ordered 2 appetizers and also thought they were smaller than average. Wine was good, the service was fine. With so many great restaurants in Portland, there is nothing here that would draw us back.

Great food & great people

By Kristiechez |

What an amazing spot! Food is excellent, the staff & service are top notch and the vibe is warm & welcoming. If you are in the NW23rd neighborhood, you must stop. You will have no regrets!

Outstanding

By Tom Portland |

Food, Service and Ambiance all outstanding. Does not overdo it - a welcome relief in a foodie town like Portland Chef owns and family helps run it . Owner ran Jack Fillmore in San Francisco - that is now run by other family. Can not wait to go back

A great find

By Carolat67 |

Authentic Italian food tucked away in a corner that you could miss if you didn't know it was there. Friendly staff -- it felt like home. And the food is perfect. Possibly northern Italian and delicious at very reasonable prices.

A wonderful well priced Italian restaurant transplanted from the Bay area

By Hans K |

Jack is the owner and chef and provided us a fantastic NY eve meal for our party of 18. The appetizers are of the right size and fabulous; salads are perfect and the main dishes outstanding. The paella, risotto and spicy snapper top the list. Everyone was very happy. The food arrive on time for everyone - a very good job given we ordered almost everything on the menu. Well done - will come back to this great restaurant

Amazing Italian Resturant

By lynneV8645HI |

I have been here twice in the past month and both experiences were wonderful. Salads are fresh and unique and pasta is amazing! Service was great both times and I especially loved the Nebbiolo wine the owner recommended. This is a Portland GEM!

Great experience!

By Mark W |

Amazing food, great service, very nice atmosphere. I've eaten at Jack's restaurant in San Francisco and had to try his newest venture while in Portland. We took 2 of our friends, and everyone thought this place was just great. We all had different entrees, and everything was cooked to perfection (thanks Jack!) and well presented. The wine selection is very good as well. The room is small and kind of loud, but it's a fun atmosphere. Also have some tables outside for those nice Portland evenings (unfortunately we were NOT there for one of those lol). Really, could not have been a better experience. Hint - parking is a pain unless you get there very early.

Fun poeple & great food

By Bill J |

A family operation quite similar to what one might find in wonderful village location in Tuscany. This was our first visit and it will not be our last .. do not miss the gnocchi as is was almost perfect ... light fluffy with a nicely spiced sausage ragu. Be sure to visit with Spencer and his Mom they are great.

Excellent Italian, Super Friendly, WE WILL BE BACK!!!

By Heather V |

Husband and I stopped here for dinner on our last trip to Portland. We were both pleasantly surprised! We enjoyed bruschetta, goat cheese balls, spaghetti calamari, and tortellini al forno. Everything was excellent and the service was fast and very friendly. The atmosphere is unique as the restaurant is in an old house on the edge of a somewhat residential neighborhood. We will definitely be back on our next trip!

Italian must visit in Portland!

By Beckypdx4 |

My husband and I visited Fillmore Trattoria for the first of many future visits. This is now our go to restaurant for Italian food in Portland! We started with the potato croquettes and arugula salad. Our main courses were gnocchi with mushroom sauce as well as sausage with red sauce. We finished with house mad tiramisu and Italian cream layered with strawberries and lady fingers. The food was amazing! Every item was impressively flavorful, delicious, fresh and clearly house made. The servers were friendly , gave helpful suggestions and allowed time to sample to get the right wine. When we finished our delicious meal, the greeter walked outside to tell us thank you. We will be back! Again and again!

Small, lovely spot for a good dinner

By Corinne B |

My husband and I were staying nearby and walked to this neighborhood trattoria for dinner on a Saturday evening. We didn't have a reservation but were seated right away. I started with a fantastic salad (lettuce and several kinds of vegetables, including cauliflower); my husband started with bruschetta. I had chicken parmesan, and my husband had rigatoni speck. Everything was freshly made and delicious. Nice wine list (by the glass) and excellent service. Other patrons were obviously regulars, but we were treated well. If we lived in Portland, we would become regulars!

Darling spot

By Maureen M |

Was pleasantly surprised at this little find. Service, food and ambience was great. We arrived early and by the time we left it was packed and the energy among patrons great.

The scallops are top 3 in a lifetime!

By DS1314 |

Warmest spring day of the year so far had my adventurous happy hour friend and I wondering what to try next. The steak bites on chips with blue cheese were unexpectedly wonderful, but the scallops were perfect. The chef is to be cheered. Perfectly cooked, not gritty and delicate with a buttery richness. You just out on a clinic! Paired with a really unexpected Rose which accommodates the spicy red sauce well. Keep up the great work, we will be back.

Prepare to leave hungry

By JBPortlandOR |

We've been to Filmore Trattoria twice and have not been impressed at all. We ordered the olives and never in my life have I ben served olives the size of pistachios. They were all pit! The pasta dishes are tasty but they are tiny. There won't be a third time for us

What a great, lesser known, Italian restaurant.

By Michael M |

Four of us went for a belated birthday dinner, my first time. The service, atmosphere, and food were all excellent. I will, no doubt, return.

Couples

By Larryandtoniya |

This neighborhood restaurant has it all. First and foremost the food is excellent. I waited to write this review after tasting several of their dishes over a period of months. The food never disappoints. Secondly, the wait staff are just good at their profession. You will get honest and sound recommendations of wines as well. The atmosphere is convivial and every time I’ve returned I am always welcomed with a cheery “hello” the owner’s wife has her abstract painting decorating the interior. Go check this this place out.

Our go to restaurant

By Donbob48 |

We love this restaurant. The food is consistently excellent, the staff is warm, friendly and efficient, and the ambience is of a small, neighborhood restaurant. My wife and I have gone many times, often bringing friends who have also been impressed. We will be going many more.

Good food, great service

By Lisa Marie S |

We went here for a birthday dinner in the middle of the week and to my surprise it was busy. We had reservations so there was no wait for a table but since it is fairly small, I would suggest reservations for a larger group. The restaurant had a good atmosphere, the service was good and the food was great. I really enjoyed everything including their tiramisu. I would definitely go here again and have suggested it to others already.

Go Here

By Dane94306 |

Great value, because it’s got great food at a fair price and an amazing selection of dishes that you are not going to have anywhere else. Wish they had a fresh pasta option, but the pasta is awesome as it is. This is an extension of the famous restaurant of a similar name in San Francisco.

The best...neighborhood feel when you enter.

By Jeri W |

They owned an Italian restaurant in San Fran for 35 years n moved up to help their son n stayed. Blend of old family recipes, some with a twist n some with a twist of New Jersey. Comfortable decor n friendly atmosphere. Will be back next time we are in town!

Salud! Fillmore Trattoria

By cherylf235 |

First time here and it won't be the last! I had heard of this from a "word of mouth" recommendation and we decided to give it a try for our "Anniversary Dinner". We were not disappointed! The host/owner and servers are gracious and informed. The food was delectable and very reasonably priced. We enjoyed the antipasti plate to start with a nice assorted of salumi, cheese and olives. We enjoyed the Rigatoni with Speck and the Gnocchi special of the day. Both were delicious and seasoned perfectly with spot-on sauces. The Italian wine was outstanding and well-priced as well. The ambiance is cozy and very reminiscent of local restaurants in Italy. It is a busy spot with what appeared to be frequent dining clientele... which is always a good sign. Nice job Fillmore Trattoria!

Sublime!

By Barbara G |

My guy and I had dinner here recently (for the first time at this restaurant) and couldn't have been more pleased. I started with a lemon drop which was out of this world good. Followed with the goat cheese and caramelized onions appetizer. I had the insalada romana and he had the autumn salad. Both were delicious. I had the lamb sugo which was perfection. He had the eggplant parmesan special which had a rich tomato and meat sauce as well as bechamel. It was fabulous. We ended the meal off with a chocolate torte. Couldn't have been more perfect! This place moved to the top of our favorite restaurants list.

Small, But Excellent

By Kevin S |

Went here with a group of 6 after a work meeting. Cook was very accommodating with my gluten-free needs. Excellent wines. Incredibly personalized service from the waiter, cook, and bartender. While they have a menu, they also customized. Food cost was reasonable, but with the good wine selection, we wound up at $50/person, but it was worth it.

New Italian Restaurant in PDX

By Adriano M |

A great surprise. We started with a really fresh and light zucchini. My wife had a linguine with praws and spicy sauce and I had a New York steak. Both were really good. They also have a nice wine list. I'll definitely go back.

Fantastic food and great atmosphere

By choppes1 |

The menu had one problem. Trying to figure out what to eat was difficult! I'd say I'll need to come here another half dozen times (before they change the menu!) just to get a feel for everything they can do. The apps. were fantastic and led to the superlative entrees. The chef came out at one point to make some recommendations based on the daily catch, how cool!

Great Food/Vibe

By richard g |

Glad we went again and it was even better than I remembered. Great food including deep fried goat cheese, delicious bruschettas, and the lamp chops were amazing. Extensive list of Italian wines to accompany your meal. Even had dessert and the Tiramisu was to die for! Great service! Love it

Great, friendly trattoria

By Michael K |

This restaurant is on a corner of 23rd and Vaughan, a space in which several restaurants have found very hard to succeed. But Wednesday night, the place was packed with a line outside - so they are getting something right. Good Italian cooking, well prepared and efficiently served, friendly service, good wines (at least ours was) and a terrace and outdoor fire pit if you like that sort of thing. We used to love the old Besaw's on 23rd Avenue; this is just round the corner and a worthy successor.

Tasty food, high prices, and noisy!

By Ted K |

While the food is delicious, it's quite pricy--especially for Portland. But what otherwise would be a tasty splurge is ruined by the racket. In two small spaces, background music drives up the volume as everyone tries to speak above it and then above each other. The service was desultory and slow--perhaps because even at 5:30 the place was nearly full--but 45 minutes from seating to eating seems too long.

Good Italian food

By remmisa |

Good basic italian restaurant with good service and reasonable prices. Risotto was excellent and desserts were also very good. They prepare simple spaghetti portions for kids. Wine list has enough choices from low to top. Fully recommend to stop by and enjoy.

Some spicy Italian

By Richard H |

If you love spicy red sauce like I do, you'll love this place. I had a prawn "fra diavolo" pasta that was killer good. There are other spicy choices too. Very hip atmosphere and though it was very busy, we had excellent prompt service all evening. Good wine selections by the glass, too.

Great find!

By hart13 |

We happened upon this restaurant while checking out the neighborhood around our hotel (the Silver Cloud). I am glad we did...great food...great wine list...great service and staff. We loved it!!!

Wonderfully Italian

By KEinMS |

Wonderful Italian food in a cozy atmosphere. Fare is simple but excellent. Lots of yummy specials. Excellent wine menu. Spaghetti with fried calamari was very good. Staff were excellent and extreme helpful even with directions and site seeing. Nice outside seating.

June Birthday Dinner

Our daughter used to live nearby and recommended it. Good food and service. We were served complementary bruschetta which was quite tasty. It was also my birthday so they served us complementary tiramisu. Parking is limited. Overall two thumbs up

Superb eating.

Conviently Locarted with street parking, limited menu yet sufficient variety. The food was great; nice portion with satisfying taste. The Taramasu was superb. Extensive wine list to meet everyon’s taste. The service was friendly and helpful offering recommendations with the wine and the menu; the entire experience from the seating outside next to a fire place waiting for seating to the “family” environment was indeed pleasing.

A wonderful experience in a terrific Italian restaurant

We are visiting our Son and Daughter in Law in Portland Or. from Delray Beach Fl. Our wonderful experience at Fillmore Trattoria (they are also in San Francisco) was a gourmet's delight. From the appetizers to the Entrees to the dessert ,everything was delicious. It was a special occasion my wife's 85th Birthday

A little San Francisco in Portland

Highly recommended for a jolly night out, with reasonable prices good, unpretentious food, good also reasonably priced wines, friendly service..it’s a bustling place most nights despite being slightly off the beaten track, so reservations are usually a good idea. The very popular and hard to get a table atJackson Fillmore (or Jack’s on Fillmore) has been a favorite Pacific Heights haunt in San Francisco for 30 years. As a transplanted SF native, it’s amazing luck that Jack has moved to Portland and set up shop on 23rd Place and Vaughn in the Alphabet district, near me. The menu is filled with Italian comfort food essentials, with Jack’s personal spin. The complimentary bruschetta pomodoro is his really nice way to start you off on the meal. If you ask a little in advance, he’ll make zucchini carpaccio (amazing) and chicken GOV (garlic, olive oil and balsamic vinegar) and other treats from SF that aren’t on the menu. Fish is always a reliable choice and the nightly specials are great. The lamb chops are a specialty and come thin cut and piled high. I usually get the verdura salad— it has lots of vegetables and with a very light, creamy dressing.

Pasta Heaven

This is our new go-to spot for cucina casalinga (that's "home cooking"). The pasta with anchovies and garlic was on the plate of the chef when we first visited and we ordered it on our last visit. Shrimp were added and it was bellisimo.

A neighborhood gem

Warm, cozy and delicious. The total Italian experience. The atmosphere and the tasty food are a perfect combination.

Red sauce reminiscent of the East Coast!

It's hopping EVERY day of the week.. it's really good. My husband is a New Jersey transplant.. who has been disappointed with almost every other Italian place in town... took a bite of Jack's red sauce and said.. " Mama.. I'm HOME!" Great food, the staff is s super friendly and fun. If you get a chance to sit at the bar.. you can watch the kitchen in full flourish.. with chef Jack sweeping the plates just under your nose for a little "ooooh and awe" before they make their way out to the dining area.

Great Italian

The Portland outpost of San Fran's Jackson Fillmore, quality dining with great dishes. Apps, pastas, and desserts were all amazing here. We left very happy and for a great price, too! Highly recommend it.

Exquisit flavors, sophisticated service

Sophisticated menu, with delicate, but excellent flavor combinations. Well worth a visit to this neighborhood-style restaurant with metropolitan style. Save room for the desert, tiramisu is unique and not to be missed.

Hidden gem

Stopped by last night with my wife for a before show dinner. Fillmore is on a busy street, but walking up the steps it seemed like we were walking into a private home far from the traffic. First thing you notice are the guitars on the wall. We were informed that anyone can pick one up and play, acoustic or electric.. I didn't want to drive people away so I refrained... Getting to the meat of things, the food. They have a nice wine list, average price. I noted several wines that I buy and some new ones, we ordered a glass of red and were happy with the spicy layered taste. We were in sort of a rush so we ordered fast. My wife ordered the sausage and beans, I had a bit and thought it was great. I ordered the Mahi Mahi in pasta. A very good spicy sauce went well with the fish and pasta. With the spice of the wine, they played quite well. We wished we weren't in such a rush and could stay, but we had to run so we didn't get a desert or a second glass of wine. As we were leaving, we talked with one of the owner/chefs, they were from San Francisco and own a restaurant there as well. Hence the Fillmore name, they are from that part of the city. As we walked out and down the steps, we said we are putting Fillmore on our heavy rotation list of dinner spots. A really nice place to eat. Oh, we didn't hear any traffic from the street out front so don't let the location put you off.

Yep was great. This is my 2nd time and the first was great. Late and they reopened the kitchen for me. Fantastico!!!

Some good, some not so good

Cute space with mixed results on our choices recently. Started with fried goat cheese with caramelized onions which was excellent, but our potato + cheese croquettes were just bland. My daughter had spaghetti calamari, and it was very good, however my baked prawns with bread crumbs was decidedly made with past its prime prawns. Very disappointing. As a side note, the chef came out and talked at length with two tables next to us about various dishes but didn't even acknowledge us. Salvaged the evening a bit when we were offered a left behind umbrella when it had begun to rain.

Extremely fortunate to stumble across this gem

In Portland for a class, feeling bad because of a cold and needed somewhere near to eat. Walked slowly across the street to Filmore. I had the Shrimp Fra Diavolo and was entranced. Still not feeling well the next night and not wanting to expose anyone to me, I came again just before it opened and sat outside. This time had the Halibut..Another really excellent choice. It appears to be a local place. Most of the traffic I saw was walk up and people who have been there before. Warm staff and the cook is a genius.

Disapointed!

Thought this would be a good experience, but found portions small, and not up to standard for the $. Had to keep ordering ...even with three appetizers! Sent one entree back, as was not cooked (pasta) to eat...so disappointed, and can not recommend to others looking in the area.

Portland visit

We had dinner at Fillmore Trattoria on our first night in Portland. Mainly because it was right across the street from our hotel but as it turned out it was a very good choice. We ate outside on their porch. It was very not very atmosphere and the food was very good. They seemed to be pretty full so I would recommend making a reservation. Their servers were very attentive and helpful.
