Great place, ok food

By Timothy H |

Went there on a Friday night after randomly running across the website. The website made me super excited to visit the place, almost like "why haven't I heard of this place before?" I made a reservation, through OpenTable, which was really good because the walk-in wait time was about 1.5 hours. We arrived a few minutes early and were taken to our table almost immediately. The staff was quick to bring us water and our waitress came by quickly to check in with us for a drink order. I had looked a bit at the menu ahead of time and decided that me and my fiancee would each do the 3 course meal. They had two different ones, so we would get to try both. We planned to share each dish. After a bit of a long wait for the drinks, we placed our food order. We always enjoy our time together and we were lost in conversation for a while, drinks came out and eventually our first course did as well. We had fritters and fried Cauliflower. They were both just OK. I struggled growing up with cauliflower, but have decided to take another swing at it. I had a wonderful pasta a few weeks ago with roasted cauliflower in it so I was feeling more adventurous. It was ok, but it didn't feel like the preparation was anything special. I ate it, but it was just ok. The fritters were a bit better, but so small that the oil taste to me was too prominent. I don't get thrilled over fried food unless the food flavor overpowers the fried flavor. This was on the razor's edge. Again, I enjoyed it and it was ok, just nothing great. Next up was salads. I ordered the Farm Lettuces and she ordered one with potatoes and some sort of thicker cheese with kale and other things in it. Both sounded good. Mine ended up being the star and was really good and I would order it again. Hers just did not work. We swapped halfway through and I just kept wanting to go back to mine! ;) The salad just wasn't that balanced and the rich cheese and potatoes just didn't play well with the other greens and kale. I love Kale and found myself wishing it wasn't in the salad. Finally it was the main dishes. We got a pizza with sopressata salami on it as well as their rotisserie chicken. We were debating between the trout and the chicken. The waitress explained the dishes and said how much smokey flavor the chicken had since it sat over the wood fire and slow cooked for so long. We went with that. The pizza crust, cheese and salami were wonderful. But the tomato sauce we just plain bland. I have pretty high standards for artisan pizzas. If I am going for a huge stack of pizza goodness, such as a flying pie pizza, then bring on the cheese topping goodness. But if I am going for a crafted taste and blends of flavors then the tomato sauce had better be spot on. This wasn't, far from it. It really ruined the pizza for me and I am pretty tolerant of bad good. My fiancee didn't seem to have as big of a problem with it as I did, but maybe I had just got my expectations up too high from the website and photos. The chicken was pretty good. Not really all that smokey, in fact my shirt when I got home smelled way more smokey from the wood fire than I thought that chicken did. Don't get me wrong, the chicken was juicy, flavorful, and paired well with it's sides. I would order it again. But it wasn't the "super smokey" dish we were led to believe it was. By the time dessert rolled around, we were ready to roll out the door after sharing the meals. We passed, although they sounded quite tempting. Overall I am glad I went, it was a great atmosphere and the wait staff was friendly. However, the food was either just a little to highly priced or just not quite good enough to make me want to come back. If a friend wanted to go there, I would certainly go and probably find more to enjoy. But for the price, I think I would rather keep exploring other Portland gems.

Great space, good food, shame about the service

By NorthStar583148 |

It is a lovely looking restaurant, with very nice outdoor seating. The food was good. The wood fired pizza are a solid middle of the road for Portland. But all of the great space and good food was marred by very poor service. There was a lag of 30 min between the first and the last dish. There were missing drink orders. And through it all was at best ambivalence from the server. And that is unfortunate, great space, with good food, and bad service makes for an underwhelming dining experience.

Delicious birthday dinner!

By AdventureRoad |

We realized late in the week that we needed to actually reserve a table for dinner in the busy NE Portland restaurant scene to avoid a long wait. And so by this point our options for a 6:30 pm dinner time on a Saturday night were a bit limited - the Firehouse still had room and so we chose this restaurant based on their variety of meat, fish, pizza and vegetable options and also based on other reviews. We were not disappointed and would definitely return! The roasted beet appetizer was wonderful. The salmon was fantastic as were the pork chops that were huge and beautifully cooked. The cocktail menu was creative and we enjoyed a couple of inventive drinks. The atmosphere is pub-like and became more festive as the evening progressed. It was a little bit noisy as the restaurant became busier but we had no trouble hearing our conversation. We lingered at our table for nearly three hours and the wait staff was never pushy about moving us along and told us not to rush. This was so appreciated as we were visiting with an out of town guest we had not seen in a long time. Wonderful evening. Highly recommend this neighborhood spot! The only negative was that there seemed to be just a single bathroom - perhaps there was another and we simply didn't ask.

Great food, Great Ambiance

By LKDunn |

Loved the food at this popular neighborhood restaurant. Clean, fresh flavors, and a nicely varied menu. Loved the mussels and the meatballs. Ambiance in this old firehouse is upscale rustic - ask for a table in the front of the restaurant as there is more going on. Staff was professional but not overly friendly.

Hidden gem!

By Anne-Marie P |

Took a chance on trip advisors reviews and pleasantly surprised! We all enjoyed our meals, and the kids really enjoyed their flavoured sodas.

Disappointing dinner

By LocalLadyMT |

Dinner was very disappointing. The menu was extremely limited. Beer finally arrived after 20 minutes and 3 reminders. The rude behavior from the waitstaff was inexcusable. Wished we would have gone to the place across the street!

Disappointed

By seabiscuit1220 |

I read some good and bad things about the Firehouse but I decided to go with the good. As it turned out, I should have listened to the negative reviews. It was just mediocre. I ordered the chicken on a bed of kale that was so tough and stringy, there was no way I could eat it. The mashed potatoes were unfortunately boring. The brushetta was ok. I would not return to this restaurant when there are so many better restaurants in Portland.

Astonishingly good

By borninthebronx |

Off the beaten track, this restaurant provided a great evening. Pizza was terrific as was the Kale salad and cauliflower. Real nice wine list of Italian bottles: we had the Lacrima and the a nice glass of Limoncello to close the occasion. Well done! Swell service too.

Great fresh food

By WALTER S |

Rating is for this niche. Not a huge menu, but everything we had was first rate. Try the kale salad or fried cauliflower. The Clear Creek brandy was also great.

homey neighborhood restaurant with excellent italian food.

By TomAlseaOR |

we were in North Portland just off Lombard when we were looking for a good eatery. Peg Likes Italian so i looked up italian on the Garmin and started down the list. I saw firehouse and like the picture of the eclectic old firehouse on the web so I told the Garmin to GO! on the way, we made reservations on open table. Parking was a bit of a problem but we only had to walk a block. The menu was clearly italian and very simple. I had stuffed risotto stuffed grape leaves and a hanger steak with toasted potatoes and Grana perdano on a bed of Arugula. Peg had deep fried stuffed olives and a hand rolled pasta with a tangy cream sauce with cherry tomatoes. I do not know her protein but the pasta dish was really good. The hanger steak was good too, with a hint of smoke from the wood fired oven and cooked to perfection. The stuffed olives were good, but are just not my style. The Grape leaves on the other hand were delicious! The leaves had just the right amount of crunch and the risotto was perfect as well, creamy with a little chunk of cheese right in the center. to give it a little texture and a burst of flavor.. The wine list was mostly Italian and the prices fairly reasonable for a restaurant. I had a local microbrew Ale as I had never heard of any of the wine selections. The service was excellent and the wait staff clearly enjoyed their work.

Something Special

By tfizzle |

This is one of the best priced small italian restaurants in portland. Fabulous thin crust pizza, but other delicious food includes the fried cauliflower with lemon aioli, meatballs with lacinto kale and the light ceasor with romaine hears. Great prices on the winelist to boot.

Very good but can be pricey

By Roger S |

This is a very nice find in the Portland area. Definetly a destination restaurant. After being greeted with a "Do you have a reservation?"(Don't you hate that?) we were seated in a very nice restaurant that used to be a firehouse. It has a very warm atmosphere with a brick oven and warm lighting. The food is very good but it is a la carte so it can be pricey. I had the meatballs which were very good but $15.50..(.c'mon.!) Sides were extra so things add up quickly there. My dining partner had the Pizza Margherita which she said was very good. I think if I return, I would try the pizza as well. The server was very attentive

Good food, good vibes

By Strommc |

My wife brought me here for my birthday as I'd been wanting to try it for a while and we were more than impressed (we've now been back a few times in the last two months). Overall it was a great value, the food was really good but fairly priced, the wine list was interesting and very inexpensive (most expensive bottle was less than $50 I think), and they had several very thoughtful cocktails. I loved the pizza, it reminded me of being in Italy as it has a very thin crust with a more traditional tomato base (ie not processed marinara sauce). The entrees are also interesting and thought out which leads to great experiences. One thing to be aware of is that it's possible they will run out of an entree or two based on time of evening but luckily each of the one's we've tried have been great so it shouldn't be much of an issue. The is a great restaurant worth trying.

Great food and great service

By Robert L |

Firehouse has been a favorite of ours since it opened several years ago. We have been many times, both for special occasions and "dinners out". It's comfortable, the food is great, the service is great, and the prices are reasonable for the quality of food and service. We have had nearly everything on the regular menu. On our most recent visit for our wedding anniversary we shared a delicious bruschetta with asparagus, rosemary and cheese, a pair of excellent salads, the always excellent hanger steak, and an unusual preparation of rockfish with mint and salmoriglio.

We were seven very satisfied people

By borninthebronx |

I'm in town visiting family and Firehouse was such a lucky find. We started with some appetizers like the kale salad and the roasted cauliflower. They were delicious. My son had the meatballs and I managed to get a little slice that had such Exquisite flavor. They have wood burning stoves and I decided to go for the pizza: Thin crust and satisfying sauce. My wife and son-in-law went the salmon and it was also wonderfully prepared. The service was friendly and highly competent. The whole atmosphere welcomed and warmed us.

Best pizza in PDX

By PDXPdx |

I have to say that I am a little amused with the poor reviews of the pizza and the thinness and scarce toppings. Those people have obviously never been to Europe, much less Italy. Just makes me want to go here more.......ps, kale should be braised. Keep doing what you're doing firehouse.

Great Pizza

By lovetogoalways |

Went there with a couple friends. Reservation was made and we were seated immediately. Pretty small space so you're really close to neighbors but good thing is you get to see more plates. We ordered the three app special, aracini balls, bruschetta and fried cauliflower with a lemon creme fraiche. The three rice balls were very nice, creamy, a bit bland but ok. The cauliflower wonderful, the bruschetta ehh. Seemed expensive for one slice of bread, melted cheese and some peaches on top. Would never order that again. The pizzas were amazing, one with sausage and one with sopresta, the sausage was my favorite. I would definitely go back for pizza!

Recommended by our Airbnb hostess

By sandy_from_LA |

We had just arrived in Portland and our Airbnb hostess recommended Firehouse as a nearby place that we could get a good dinner--IF we could get in. At about 8:30pm on a Tuesday evening, we were able to walk right in and get a table. We started with the arancini, had the incredibly delicious romaine hearts with lemon-anchovy vinaigrette and shaved pecorino and the pizza with fennel sausage, onions, and fresh mozzarella. We finished with baked apple crumble. Delicious first dinner in Portland.

Nice neighborhood spot, if a little cramped.

By Jeremy S |

We needed a quick bite on a rainy Sunday night in NE Portland and were seated right away on the condition we be done in an hour or so for an incoming reservation so it was a win/win. We had cocktails, wine, appetizers, pizza and a dessert all delivered by very good servers who never made us felt rushed. Appetizers were good as were the crafty cocktails. The wood-fired pizza was ok, but my quibble is they don't slice it before serving and the serrated knife provided tore the very thin crust rather than cutting it. Minor thing to be sure, but made the experience of eating it a bit of fight. In addition to the difficult pizza the space felt kind of cramped, but we're looking forward to another visit when their outside space is open.

Decent lunch spot

By Wayne Centrone |

Conveniently located in the heart of NW Portland, the Firehouse offers a diverse menu with a genuinely inviting environment. The menu has enough variety to meet a wide assortment of tastes. I had the burger and it was a good midday meal. My table mates partook in the Ruben sandwich and the grilled cheese. Glowing reviews from each. The fireplace in the main dining room and the large bar that invites you into the restaurant also make the place a comfortable spot to rest and regroup. The Firehouse is definitely worth a stop over if you find yourself shopping in the NW and need a good place to quench your palate and refresh your hunger pangs.

Smokin'

By robert15065 |

If you like sitting by the fire on a cold wet day, this is the place for you. If smoke from a wood fire bothers you, go elsewhere. The tables seemed a little close together, so we sat at the bar. From there you get a good view of the kitchen and pizza oven. I thought the pizza was one of the better I have had in Portland (for thin crust). My wife had the fried cauliflower and pork. Both were excellent. We were there when it opened at 5pm on a Wednesday and it seemed to fill up fast. I would suggest making reservations. Parking is on-street and can also be a problem.

Neapolitan wood oven pizza

By Shiba_fan |

My husband and I dined at Firehouse one night, and came back again the next night because the pizza was that good! It is as close to VPN certified Neapolitan pizza as you can get. We tried the mushroom and the Margharita pizzas on separate visits. The seasonal spring salad was delicious as well. The small plates are very small but the perfect size as an appetizer to share; would highly recommend the broccoli with hummus. We brought a bottle of wine with us one night; we were traveling and had too much wine from our Willamette Valley wine tour to bring home with us on the plane. They have a reasonable $15 corkage fee. There are lots of vegetarian options on the menu, and they were open to leaving out meat and switching out cheese (my husband can't stand goat cheese, so they used pecorino on his salad instead). The space is charming in an old firehouse (hence the name), with a few outdoor tables and the large door open, when the weather is nice. Highly recommended!

Popular With Locals, Tasty Food Reasonably Priced

By Gcnarc |

We had a beet and a fried broccoli appetizer, magaret pizza, roasted chicken and meat balls. We enjoyed all of them. The house red wine by the glass was pleasant. We had the earl gray ice cream dessert and a salted caramel dessert. Not being someone who ever adds salt to my meals, I felt the salted caramel dessert too salty. We would definitely go back to this restaurant. The building is an old firehouse converted into the restaurant.

Not bad, not great

By peekadog |

We had Father's Day dinner here a few nights ago. We had a reservation but had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. The hostess was attentive and kind, but we still had to wait. Once seated we found out that two of the entrees (the two we were most interested in) were not available and one of the desserts (the one we wanted most) was not available. We had a 7 p.m. reservation so not so late that you'd expect them to be sold out of some dishes. That aside, the food was pretty good. Not outstanding but enjoyable. My husband had one of the pizzas. It has a lovely thin crust. I had the trout, which was nicely prepared but I would have preferred no skin. My father-in-law had the meatballs which were huge and quite tasty. The bruschetta appetizer was a highlight and the hearts of romaine salad was cheesy and lemony. Service seemed a bit slow especially as our meal wound down. I noticed a few people sitting waiting for a dessert or their check for what seemed like a long time. Overall, a decent experience but not outstanding. It is not in our neighborhood, so probably will not go out of my way to eat here again.

great pizza's

By sharon o |

My husband and I went there with my 2 sons and daughter in law. We had the fire oven pizza and the hanger steak and both were very good. It was an old firehouse turned into a restrurant. Service was fast and friendly.

Perfect dinner experience

By ackeegirl |

My husband and I treated my parents to dinner here on our last night of vacation in Oregon. We were looking for a place with a patio to bring our small dog. They were so accommodating and even brought out a water dish for him. The menu is inspiring and everything we had was delicious. There were 4 empty plates after each course. Our waitress was attentive and made excellent recommendations about wine and beer and answered all our questions about the menu options.

Very Pleasant Hour or Two

By SchalkNZ |

We were lucky enough to hit the happy hour (up to 6pm) and enjoyed a very pleasant hour two. The food was good, with an Italian twist. We chose to sit outside in the late-afternoon sun. Our friendly waitperson was very laid-back and things were a little slow. We didn’t mind, but anybody in a hurry to get somewhere could get frustrated.

Second time not so perfect...

By Scott M |

Returned to the scene of a great meal last March...mussels and service and ambiance all great. Pizza (spicy sopressata) was tasty, but the center of the pizza was not fully cooked. Though the edge crust was charred, the center was soft and soupy. Too bad. Will probably order something else next time.

excellent, thoroughly authentic dishes, perfectly roasted meats

By baba40 |

I really felt that I was in some excellent 'slow food association' recommended trattoria in central italy. Fantastic pizzas, smoky, succelent pork roast, and grilled fish. A definite emphasis on organic, and seasonal dishes. Real, perfectly executed, Italian dishes you won't find anywhere else. A welcome, and thoroughly new addition to the PDX restaurant scene. The staff were very warm and accomodating on our visit. Will definitely be back!

A wonderful anniversary meal!

By Dawn N |

We'd been hearing about Firehouse and waiting for the right evening to give it a try. It's further than we would usually drive for dinner, but it was our anniversary so decided it was now or never. The building was a fire station and is a nicely re-done space with super high ceilings, an open kitchen, and visible wood fired oven so you can watch them making your yummy dinner. We didn't realize that they had a Happy Hour, and happened to arrive while it was still going on. We enjoyed a couple of pilsners while waiting for our appetizers to arrive. The first came out really quickly, which was nice. It was the Fried Cauliflower and we both quickly it gobbled up. Next came our pizza, and after just a bit longer the Meatballs arrived. Mama Mia! We're still dreaming about those meatballs! We're not kale fans, but even my husband ate all he could manage to wrest away from my greedy little hands... We enjoyed the sausage pizza (and had chanterelles added) and it was good, but the 2 apps were the stars of the evening. We stopped before finishing every last mouthful so that we could taste a dessert. Thank goodness we picked the Ricotta Doughnuts - we'd return in the future just for them. Hot, crispy, sugary, light and served with a small scoop of salted caramel ice cream and a puddle of caramel sauce. Absolutely to die for! The staff was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The space is comfortable, interesting and nicely done. The food is delicious. What more could one ask for? Well, the comp'd dessert due to our anniversary was a nice surprise and a wonderful end to a memorable evening...

Wonderful atmosphere. Amazing pizza.

By Tony B |

Great neighborhood gem and one of the finest artisan pizza shops in Portland (where the competition is fierce). Great atmosphere for enjoyable dinner conversation whether romantic or with friends. Nice wine list. For those wishing to wander outside the pizza choices, the appetizer and share plates are creative and fun while the rotisserie chicken is easily one of the best in PDX.

Our go-to place for Valentines day and other family get togethers.

By Anjala E |

First you'll see the customer cars parked end-to- end in the blocks around the place. Second you'll smell the incredible odor of herb rubbed rotisserie chickens. downstairs or outside in the courtyard on summer days are preferred places for families and romantic couples to be seated. Upstairs they have a room for your own private event, a place we used for a mini family reunion. because it is a historic building there is not an elevator to the second floor but the main floor and courtyard are a wheelchair accessible as is the main floor bathroom. the food is impeccable, fresh locally sourced, mostly organicm You do not want to miss the meatballs, the wood - fired roasted mussels in a skillet. they make pure and simple italian style pizzas. the desserts are exquisite and sometimes awesome.

Great Restaurant

By Bonetraill |

Had a lovely dinner with family in this fabulous restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and friendly with lots of ambience. The service was excellent. The food was superb. Prices affordable. Am looking forward to eating there again and again.

Smokin for sure

By merreh65 |

Couldn't agree more with all the 5 star reviews already submitted. But smokin' can be taken two ways. Both the quality of the food, and the way your clothes smell for several days after an evening there. For me it was worth it and I kind of like that wood smoke ambience. Certainly much better than tobacco smoke. But if that's not your thing, be forewarned.

Sit at the bar

By Jane48_47 |

We came here because the food was well-reviewed and it didn't disappoint. However, we had a crummy table in a back room even though we had a reservation. The action is at or near the bar--we're going there next time.

Great Value

By Mike K |

Good food, friendly service, unique, relaxed atmosphere make for a memorable experience. We will return when in Portland.

decent, but our server was awful

By Stew M |

It is getting to be the norm here that nice or decent places are getting by with terrible or inattentive service. We went to Firehouse for a birthday celebration because we had been there before and had great pizza and experience. We requested the second floor as it is a small place and it was a chilly night for the patio. It tuned out, we were the only table on the floor. We were pretty early for our reservation, but we were seated right away. Once our server came to see us, we ordered everything at once. Within 15 minutes, a drink, a bottle of wine, an appetizer, a salad, a pasta dish and two pizzas were at our table..all coming basically at once. Our server could barely be bothered to help us, understanding we were up the stairs and the only table. He barely stopped to listen, didn't ask about our food and was clearly trying to get us out of there, so I'm guessing he could go home. We would have ordered more and stayed, but we didn't get the option and didn't get to spend a leisurely dinner out. We were there for barely an hour. We even tried to talk to a manager, but were told none were there. This was always a place we knew we could get a good meal and good service, but I don't see returning to Firehouse anytime soon.

Great low key spot

By Greg W |

I've heard about Firehouse for quite a while, but this was our first visit with 2 friends for my birthday dinner. The building, being an old firehouse has lots of character. We got prime (7:00 Saturday) reservations just a week in advance. Unfortunately the nice outdoor patio was not in operation as the weather was still marginal. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated. Our server was quite attentive throughout the meal, though we had to assist in pacing a little. The 3-course dinners are very good deals ($29 for a starter, salad and entrée of choice, $25 for pizza). All the starters were good (stuffed grape leaves, fried cauliflower, beets with hazelnuts, etc.) The salads were very good, as well. Wood fired is key here and lends a nice touch to most entrees. In our group we had pizza, meatballs & hanger steak. I brought a very expensive magnum of 2001 Brunello di Montelcino. The wine service was not sophisticated, and the glasses subpar, but a decanter was provided and our server was fine. All-in-all this is a very nice low-key spot I will definitely come back to, even though it is far from my usual environs.

A Great Location and Pretty Good Food

By SnowGooseCalifornia |

To be honest, we did not feel this restaurant deserved the high ratings we had seen. It was good: a good location, good service, nice and cozy decor. The best dish of all was the meatballs and kale, but my trout was ordinary and the onions mainly burnt. Two of us ordered pizza, also burnt though the waitress called it "charred." Not bad but not great.

An authentic gem

By Bob B |

Not easy to find, but worth the search. A restored firehouse showcases vintage photos and the authentic smell of a wood-fired grill. The menu offers a tasty variety of seasonal fare and rustic food choices. Wonderful food at modest prices...and a happy hour to boot. Don't miss the pot de creme, with salted caramel and hazelnuts. Amazing!

Amazing

In the North East area of Portland on Dekum St we discovered an amazing Italian eatery. Delicious food, fantastic service and a great selection of wine. If we are back in Portland we will dine here again.

Great Italian Food

By Kevin M |

We celebrated our anniversary here last night with our family and the food was delicious. The service was good and the ambiance was nice. The personal pizza was pretty big, so we wound up bringing some home for today's lunch. I'd recommend Firehouse for a great, laid back dinner.

Superb!

By Swapna |

A truly sterling dinner...at Firehouse Italian restaurant in Portland, OR! My mom's bday dinner was celebrated in culinary heaven with multiple small plates of fried cauliflower bites, sautéed garlicky broccolini, rosemary-infused crackers w/ pecorino slices & quince jam, scarlet beets speckled with plump hazelnuts: each dish a delight. That entree of herbed meatballs in a light tomato broth: a revelation! And the pizzas! I don't eat pizza generally, but that oven-fired thin crust, those toppings of melted house-made cheese & wild arugula: wow! Finale: a spongy almond cake w/ house-made creamy ricotta: just right! The wine list also did not disappoint, with wonderful Southern Italian selections. This place has a small menu with simple selections, but all done extremely well.

If you are in the area...

By aussiegozoom |

While in Portland, we stayed at an AirBnb just a few blocks from Firehouse. Firehouse was really the only spot to stop in for dinner within walking distance in this particular area, so we were glad to have found it. I felt the ambiance of the converted firehouse was unique and provided a good option for couples, families or even a business lunch. Appealing to a wide audience. We were seated just outside the kitchen, so we could easily watch all the tasty plates being turned out. We ordered a couple appetizers, salads, entrees and drinks. We have some food allergies and the staff there was accommodating, like most of Portland. Everything was fine, but nothing outstanding. Everything was presented better than it actually tasted. I was really only truly unhappy with the "state" of my entree. I ordered a dish served in a cast iron skillet. When it came to me, it was so hot it repeatedly spit hot oil on my arms and face. I sat there for nearly 5 minutes with a napkin held up shielding me from the popping skillet. When our server finally came by, I mentioned they should be careful about serving food that hot, especially with hot oil spitting out. I didn't get much of a response and they continued to serve spitting plates. Not even a simple "Oh no! I'm sorry. We'll keep an eye on that." I very much dislike hot food gone cold, but this was just insane. The lack of acknowledgement from the server just further irritated me. It was like "oh, well. Anything else?" Nothing was awful, but we would not return again.

Awesome!

By jghan |

This place was great for dinner. It is a little out of the way - if you're staying downtown, you will need to have a car, or take the bus or a taxi. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, the food is really good. We had fried cauliflower for an appetizer. Very tasty! I had the meatballs, with the potatoes for dinner - great! And the desserts are unique and flavorful! It is worth the drive to try this gem.

Good Service, Good Food, Good Wine

By toddb470 |

The Firehouse is located in an older neighborhood that has a couple of other restaurants nearby. And the area has improved immensely. It's an old firehouse converted into a restaurant with some outdoor seating, high ceiling, and a roll up door (summer time). We were a group of four and all of our dishes were very good. I had the hanger steak (medium rare, bite-sized pieces on a bed of thinly sliced crispy potatoes, arugula, and cheese shavings). A good side dish is the fried cauliflower with a lemon creme fraiche dip. The wine selection was good and very reasonable. It's good for small groups and the place has a nice upbeat feel to it. The service was tops! Our server was very attentive and engaging. She steered us in the right direction with her knowledge of wine. We'll be back.

Piece of Portlandia

By Bostonvisitorxx |

Very reasonable prices; good service. Hanger steak, arancina balls, stuffed grape leaves were well received. I got the grilled (& rare, which i liked) tuna, but it wasn't hot enough. .We got the 3 course meal for $29, which was nice, but actually more food than I probably wanted. Very casual atmosphere (especially outside which could use a good gardener) & you could smell the wood-fired oven from everywhere.... Celebrity chef siting while we were there...

Rustic Southern Italian Food

By SFOBEYOND |

We were looking forward to savoring the rotisserie chicken but at 7:45PM, the restaurant sold out. Firehouse is known for its wood-fired oven, rotisserie, and grill, we opted for the pizza with mushrooms (wood-fired oven...how can you resist) which had a think crust almost like flatbread. The orrechiette pasta dish was substituted for true cod in place of pork which did not hold up but it was tasty. The best dish was the fried cauliflower with lemon crème fraiche and thinly cut crispy potatoes. Generous portions. If you are game for meat or the pizza bianca of the day and the three course prix-fixe dinner, Firehouse is a great destination. The location in an old firehouse is quaint and comfortable. Highly recommended.

Food, service, atmosphere: A triple play

By rldavis |

What a surprise! Firehouse is worth the drive up to way-north Portland. The location is charming; the owners did an excellent job renovating the Dekum Street firehouse. We sat in what would have been the garage door where the old fire carriages left the building, and the setting was very pleasant. The wait staff was hip, but without a trace of unpleasant PDX attitude. The service was impeccable. There was not a single pretentious word on the menu (although maybe there should have been--the "red pepper vinagrette" was really a fantastic romesco sauce). The food was out of this world: creative, well executed dishes, and all for the prix fixe of $25 dollars for a starter, salad and entrée! The one thing we didn't try at our table were the wood-fire pizzas. (The chef complements his Italian bona fides with a wine list that is exclusively Italian, except for one Oregon and one Washington selection.) I'll be back to try more appetizers, entrées and those good-looking pies!

visiting from Mexico, we stayed in downtown Portland, but took a cab which was worthwhile doing. When entering the restaurant, we immediately felt "at home". A typical neighborhood restaurant, cheerful guests and a welcoming mood. The menu was well diversified and everybody found something they liked. The food was very well prepared and nicely presented, my vegetarian wife enjoyed her plate as I did my fish which was just delicious, not overcooked or overspiced - just perfectly done. The chef/owner and his crew were great hosts. Great wine selection at reasonable prices. Will return when close to Portland.

Cozy atmosphere and wood-fired pizzas

By panneoleary |

This place has a warm and cozy atmosphere with tasty wood-fired pizzas and salads. It's a nice spot for a family dinner and there's plenty of parking nearby.

Great overall experience

By Mario S |

Good food (probably among the best pizzas in town), cosy atmosphere and attentive service. It sounds basic but remains the only recipe for sustained success. We'll be back. PS We came in a little late with the kids after soccer practice and I asked for super speedy service. Must say we got it despite a full house, leaving me quite impressed.

Fantastic Cuisine

By Henry H |

The restaurant is located in a turn of the century (20th) firehouse. The food was exquisite, the service very good and the prices were very reasonable. Everything from appetizers to the desserts was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant and I know I'll be back the next time I'm in portland.

A great place - everyone wants to go back!

By cheapkathleen |

We had a large group, 16 of us, and the restaurant was amazingly accommodating and gracious both on the phone when I called to make the initial reservations and then when I added 6 more people. This was a theme that carried through our entire visit. The restaurant was not quite ready for us when we arrived so they served us complimentary prosecco out on the patio while the table was prepared. Between the entire group we had most everything on the menu and all of it was yummy. The pizzas were excellent, and the fried cauliflower was a treat. My entree was a wood oven cooked and therefore smoked fish that was amazing. Everyone was so happy with the place and plan to go back. It is in a funky old Firehouse and off the beaten path in a neighborhood but well worth the trip.

Try and make a reservation!

By Fearlessphil |

My daughter wanted to eat here because an episode of Portlandia was filmed here. We waited for an hour because we didn't make a reservation. The staff was very friendly and the manager gave us 2 free appetizers for our patience. I enjoyed my pizza but my wife thought her spaghetti dish and dessert was so-so. Much praise for the service and friendliness.

Relaxed pleasant place to eat

By hlazer |

Dined at Firehouse with my cousin (who lives in Portland); weather was great so we were able to eat outside. Excellent service, and good food. Pizza was outstanding, as was the arancini appetizer.

a great discovery

By PatricksMom |

on a perfect summer evening, 4 of us enjoyed an excellent meal on the garden patio. For the small plates, deep fried olives (yes), bruschetta and jalapenos were delicious. I had the meatballs, others had the steak. For dessert, a very rich but not too sweet, dense, creamy chocolate mousse. A lovely Willamette Valley pinot gris complimented the small plates. For $29, one gets three courses - small plate, entree and dessert. Most memorable was the service - superior, attentive, knowledgeable (the wine was properly chilled and served in an iced container. The server twirled the wine bottle to enhance the chill each time she came to the table - not that the wine lasted very long, but we had two bottles. Oregon's Clear Creek apple brandy was consumed with dessert. Definitely a place to enjoy. Casual, not fancy, but well-done.

One Of Portland's Best Restaurants

By cher2116 |

You read these reviews, people say the food is great and well priced. You like I did tonight wonder where can I go for a great experience, almost like attending a concert of your favorite music artist. My wife and I wanted to go out and have a great night. It is rare I get excited about food, rare when I'm eating chicken I use my hands to make sure I can savor every bite. This is a great place, they cook the food on an original basis. They cook in an open hickory smoked oven that warms and cooks the food. The flavor of Pizza's, Chicken, and all meats is excellent. They combine vegetables, and ingredients that make for a special meal. Prices, and yes I'm repeating the common phrase are well worth the price. I last night paid $30 more for a Portland landmark steak place and it wasn't close to Firehouse. Located in an old NE Portland Fire House with excellent service and staff. Want a special evening at a great local place, try Firehouse.

Top of the list!

By drcj1 |

Walking into the Firehouse, the smell of the wood fired oven fills the air with a warm, friendly ambiance. The staff are warm and friendly providing attentive, first class service. The local seasonal dishes are prepared carefully and delicious. The pizzas are wonderful as well. It was just the place to celebrate a family birthday.

If you're in a hurry, don't go here. They take their time and you'll be glad they do.

By Mike R |

This place screams ambiance. A 100-year old Firehouse, converted into a restaurant complete with a wood-fired oven which fills the place with a wonderful smoky aroma. I had the three course special which gave me lots of choices and great value to boot. The food was fantastic, the service impeccable. Each course was presented individually and enough time is allowed to savor. This is not a place to go if you you rush through meals. This is a place to take some friends and spend an evening. Definitely a must-go!

Wonderful ambiance!

Shared dinner with friends from out of town and we were not disappointed with our experience at Firehouse. Overall, great food, especially the roasted corn appetizer and the chocolate dessert! The iced tea was amazing..the perfect complement to dinner.

Hanging out in the (fire)house

Thursday evening. Late dinner. Greeted warmly. Nice vibe, funky ambiance. Share plates, trout, pot De creme. Fantastic. Hanging out, enjoying life. Perfect background tunes. Loved it. Thank you Firehouse.

Firehouse - great 3 course dinner option & consistent service

By drgaud |

We chose not to make a reservation knowing we would enjoy a late dinner on a Wednesday evening, but we didn’t realize it was Portland Dining Month so there was a slight wait. Worth it. We selected the three course meal which Firehouse offers daily, not limited to Portland Dining month. The only difference this month versus other months is $1. We were celebrating friendship and enjoying our evening. Our waitress Mara was pleasant – not overly engaging, but very pleasant and helpful. The whole team worked well together without skipping a beat which made the evening very enjoyable. Water glasses always full along with fresh cutlery for each course, nice touch! Thanks team. Our entire dinner, cocktails and dessert were quite tasty. The only thing I wish we could’ve changed was the heavy amount of salt on the steak entrée. I couldn’t figure out if it was the parmesan cheese or salt on the meat. It was WAY too salty. The meat was not overdone, in fact slightly undercooked. The meatball entrée was excellent. The two appetizers: a small beet dish and these three yummy cheesy, salami dish (ball shaped) were ridiculously yummy. The spring salad with fennel and citrus equally as fresh and delicious – spot on! The cinnamon crueler (donut) with earl gray ice cream and lavender syrup was good, but not great. We debated the chocolate mousse dessert and this. Next time we’d try the chocolate with salted caramel. It’s wonderful to see how the owners have recrafted an old Firehouse, thus the restaurant name. A very pleasant evening. Not over-the-top, but well worth a visit. If I could eat gluten the pizzas looked and smelled fantastic.

They made me like foods I don't like!

By ToniPortland_OR |

Four of us tried Firehouse and everything we tried was fantastic. The meatballs were savory with a hint of Mediterranean flavor. The fried green olives were so tasty even a non-olive eater liked them. I don't like cauliflower but the fried cauliflower appetizer changed my mind. So good! The lemon cream sauce served with them was heavenly. I ordered the goat cheese gnocchi as my entree. Others at the table were concerned the flavor would be too strong but it was actually very light. The gnocchi was served with cooked carrots. I have detested cooked carrots since childhood but these...these were delicious! My husband ordered the steak and I got a few samples. Very flavorful with lots of seasoning. My husband and I typically stick to our own plates but we both kept grabbing bites off of each other's plates, both the gnocchi and the steak were so good! The wine list was mostly unfamiliar, with a lot of Italian and maybe Spanish(?) wines. We asked the server for assistance and she recommended what turned out to be a great pairing for all of our entrees. The service was friendly and efficient. The ambiance was cozy and casual, but perhaps a little loud. The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the high quality of the food. Definitely make reservations unless you don't mind waiting outside. I reserve my 5 ratings for really amazing places. Firehouse is almost a five. A 4.8 if I could.

Memorable experience

By KU71 |

One of the best meals ever. Quality food. Great service. Located in an old firehouse. A fun evening with my wife. I wish I lived in Portland (rather than Texas) so I could go back and try the pizza which looked delicious. We got there right at five when they opened and were able to find a close parking place. Considering the excellence of the meal I felt the prices were very reasonable. Be sure to try the raspberry tart for dissert!

Very tasty food and fun location

By Mark_in_Portland |

Creative, Lively, affordable! Carmelized cauliflower with lemon creme fraiche? Spicy roasted broccoli with crunchy crumbs? Creamy white herbed beans on artisan bread? What to eat first! It was all so delicious. We shared everything including sweet romaine caesar and greens tossed with hazelnuts, humboldt fog, and currants. Followed by six huge melt-in-my-mouth meatballs cooked with greens, perfectly-prepared hangar steak, mussels with melted butter. This was a great family style meal with loads of variety, flavors, and vegetables. While the restaraunt was really full, we enjoyed attentive service. Highly recommend this character-filled neighborhood place.

Gem in NE

By jillandamy |

We have been here a few times over the years and I really can say it seems to get better each time. Last night we met some friends so we were able to order more dishes to share and try things we had never ordered. The pizza is wood fired and very good. Not the best in town but better than most pizza in Portland. The beets, Cesar salad, fried cauliflower, brussel sprouts, meatballs and two desserts that we tried were excellent. Service is consistently good. Happy hour is from 5-6pm and the menu is a good one - good selection of food and a $3.5 pint of IPA as well as a house wine. The other good thing is that you can reserve your table on OpenTable or by calling them directly. They also take walk-ins but it does get busy on weekend nights. Nice atmosphere too.

Second time just as charming

By rldavis |

My second visit to Firehouse was as great as the first! Once again, the prix fixe menu was a spectacular bargain. The salads are original, and we really enjoyed the pizza bianca (eggplant, roasted pepper). There are no fussy dishes here--just fresh, high-quality ingredients in interesting and sometimes original combinations, like the meatballs with kale. The Primitivo red wine was scrumptious. The wait staff is refreshingly unpretentious, knowledgeable and so pleasant that we'd love to have them at our table for dinner! Even though we were sated by our meal, we wanted to return the next day to try more of their dishes.

Relaxed atmospher - delicious food

By msm1959 |

Loved Firehouse Restaurant. Small plate appetizers, salads are fresh - common with a twist (i.e. fresh arugula with shaved asparagus), wood oven pizzas and several entrees to choose from. Service was terrific - great wine menu and server was able to pick out a perfect wine. Atmosphere is very relaxed - realized we spent over two hours and were not made to feel we should hurry. Would definitely come back on our next trip to Portland.

Beautiful dining experience!

By Jacqueline B |

Fun remodeled old firehouse in Portland. Great appetizers. Had the firehouse meatballs. Yummy. Lots of Kale. Husband had half a chicken, very generous with the portions. Good idea to make reservations, we didn't but they still treated us great. Desert was wonderful as well. I loved the mint iced tea! Will come back with friends!

Flavor is the ultimate goal.

By Lynette M |

Saturday 4 of us had a fabulous dinner at the Firehouse in Portland. This restaurant is housed in a 100 year old firehouse which has been lovingly restored into a fun and funky eatery. The centerpiece of the kitchen is a wood-fired oven which produces pizza very similar to that in Italy, that is thin crusted, light fresh tomato sauce, and sparsely applied house made charcuterie and fresh mozzarella. It was fantastic! Everything was excellent, even the green salad which was simple yet utterly delicious the greatest care being taken with the greens and simple vinaigrette. The star of the dinner was the bruschetta: grilled bread topped with roasted figs, whipped ricotta and saba, a reduced balsamic vinegar. The house-made fresh peach tart for dessert was the perfect ending. This food was so good that I wanted to start all over again.

Very bad Attitude and Soggy Pizza

By Svalöv Ron |

Let me begin by saying that I very rarely ever rate a place terrible. We chose this restaurant because it accepted reservations for 8. We had a 5:30 setting and they were ready for us when we arrived, but it was clear the server didn’t want a table of 8 (attitude and rudeness). We placed an order for drinks that finally got to us. We next placed food orders, during this time one in the party (she had already ordered) began feeling ill (nothing to do with the restaurant). After returning from the ladies room she asked the waitress to cancel her order as she was ill and leaving. The server told her “I will box your order for you” meaning you can’t cancel. The orders weren’t even close to being fired. The ill person went back to the hotel and we took her unwanted cold dinner with us (after paying). My pizza was black on the crust and soggy on the bottom... Pathetic, I will never go here again and will not recommend it to anyone.

Local Favorite

By soulfultravel |

I live in Portland and love Firehouse Restaurant. For locals and visitors, Firehouse has great food. Some of the best pasta I have ever had. The food is fresh and really good. Great atmosphere and lots of parking. Given the pricing and the service Firehouse is a great value. My husband and I find ourselves eating there over and over again. Given all the great restaurant choices in Portland, I think the consistent quality of Firehouse speaks for itself.

Convenient location in neighborhood.

By Ashlandbuck |

We had reservations, day after Christmas. Appetizers came right away, as well as drinks. My vodka on the rocks was a generous pour. The appetizer of hearts of romaine were fresh and delicious. Arancini was fun. The appetizer pizza came quickly too, with scissors and a soggy middle. Then the entrees. B had chicken with tiny sweet potatoes which she loved. M had a sausage pizza, soggy middle. I and P had the pappardelle. I liked it. P did not as pasta was stuck together, sausage or sauce too spicey, and pasta was oversauced. Waiters were nice but hurried. The place is so noisy that you must shout. But go! There are other things on the menu to try.

Happy Hour menu affordable and delicious

By Betty F |

If you're looking for an early dinner on an outdoor patio, surrounded by lovely blooming herb bushes, this is the place. Roasted cauliflower is tasty, meatballs are hearty and thin crust pizza is cooked to perfection (crusty and not to drippy). Love the vibe of this Woodlawn neighborhood too.

Nice farm to table in historic former firehouse

By davemh333 |

We ate here because their very nice outdoor seating area was featured in a sketch on the Portlandia TV series of which my teenage daughter is a big fan. Mostly farm to table fare at reasonable prices. My cauliflower appetizer was a bit too salty and my chicken main was good, not great. The ambiance is very nice, as this is a converted firehouse that is more than one-hundred years old. My daughter's pizza was excellent.

Great comfort food!

By Dave R |

We went on nice warm summer night, sat on the outside patio. Great ambience on the patio overlooking the garden. The dining room is really cozy and inviting, great place to be on a cold rainy portland night. We had the heirloom tomatoes and watermelon salad and beet salad and their amazing pizza. The staff are amazing and friendly. Go here....

Food is good, but . . .

By Wayne Centrone |

I love puns. As such, I instantly liked the Firehouse when I learned that the restaurants theme is wood-fire grilled food sold out of a decommissioned Portland city firehouse. How awesome is that! The environs are great and very pleasant - but a bit more about that further into my review. Now for the dining experience. For the food - a solid, rock solid 4 stars. For the atmosphere - a 3.5 stars, as the venue is rather smokey and we left with fully "smoked" clothes post meal. Finally the service - man, Portland really has a dilemma with regard to quality, reproducible service. It seems that dining out is pretty much a hit-or-miss at Portland eateries, and the Firehouse was no exception. Don't get me wrong, the service wasn't overtly bad - it just wasn't overtly good either. I'm a firm believer in the notion that the food is only a small percent of the overall dining out experience, and the service at the Firehouse was aloof, not overly hospitable nor centric to the needs of the guest. As such - I give it 2 stars. Overall this means my rating of the Firehouse is on the low side; however, if the food were the only variable - I'd rate it much higher. With all of that said, the smoked skirt steak and the cauliflower starter were awesome. I mean it - really nice dishes. The drinks were also good. If the service was just a little more guest focused, I would rate the Firehouse with more stars and be back for future visits.

A Wonderful Anniversary Dinner

By LikesToTravel504 |

My husband and I went to the Firehouse Restaurant for our anniversary. It was also our first time at this restaurant. After we were seated we received two complimentary glasses of champagne. They have a deal now which they offer three courses for $27. My husband both started with the bruschetta with frommage blanc and asparagus. It was delish. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and it seemed to have lots of garlic with it. My husband had their romaine salad and I had their spring greens salad both were very good. I had their pizza margarita and my husband had the oven roasted pork shoulder with beans and spring greens. Both of our entrées were excellent. We also enjoyed an italian red which was reasonably priced. The service was great.

Good food, looong waits for it

By Lisa M |

The food was generally tasty. We had a beet and hazelnut appetizer, which was unique and satisfying. The pizzas were too salty. The trout, served on a skillet with sliced fennel and onions, was a standout. All of this, though, was overshadowed by a 25-30 minute wait between appetizers being cleared and main courses being served, with no explanation or apology.

Ambience doesn't make up for menu

By Foodcritq |

First visit to this restaurant after reading many reviews by other members, so decided to try it myself. The location and idea for this establishment is brilliant, unfortunately the menu and service was lacking. Ordered three different pizzas and all were of the same texture and consistency. Thin, burnt and lacking in both flavor and ingredients.....unfortunate. If they could revamp the menu and use food more appropriate to the vibe and charm of a firehouse.....but for now it's just a false alarm. I would suggest another option to diners considering this one.....you will be disappointed.

very nice off the path place

Good food in sweet neighborhood

By marcia_marcia |

We visited recently with friends, had called, had reservations and were seated immediately. The food was really delicious, but we had an almost 1 hour wait for our food. No one ever explained that there was a problem, but it was an unusually lovely night and this restaurant is open to the outside, so was a pleasant wait. We started with some corn fritters that were a little underdone, actually runny inside, and some roasted cauliflower, that was delicious. Each of us ordered a different entree and all diners were pleased with their choice. My husband got the fish, and it was really good. I got a pizza that was really good. This place has wonderful salads and vegetables. We had the beet salad and the lettuce wedge; both outstanding. The service is great and really the food can't be beat. I think something unusual kept our food from getting to us in a reasonable time and I will go here again.

Excellent dinner in nice neighborhood

By thefeetdoc |

Was intrigued upon reading about this converted old firestation, was delighted with the dining experience. The ambiance inside the old firehouse is just about perfect. Waitress we had was Kirsten, who could not have been any nicer or diligent with her service. Bruschetta starter was amazing with heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil. I had the meatballs and my wife had the tuna, both were prepared just perfectly. Did not have any room for dessert as the portions were quite hearty, and for the quality and quantity of food, I would say prices are very reasonable. If you are travelling to Portland, I highly recommend dining here & suggest you make reservations.

What a Find!!!

By uihwki |

My son - a student at UP noticed this restaurant while riding around Portland. WOW - are we glad he did. Great service even better food. I strongly suggest a reservation. We didn't have one but were seated at the bar (3 of us). The bar location turned into a great location as we were able to watch the chef (owner) prepare all of the food. If you want some great entertainment ask for the bar seating (only 4 spots). This was the best restaurant we ate at during our week stay in Portland. The price was also very reasonable. Hats off to our waitress (Amy) - been there since the business opened 4 years ago.

Good place

By Joe W |

Very unique, authentic firehouse. good place. Nice people. Cauliflower and chili flake pizza were great. Cauliflower was a tripadvisor review recommendation. The pizza was the server's suggestion. Both were spot on. Local brews on tap. Solid recommendation.

Plenty for the non-pizza eaters

By Miriam F |

I don't eat pizza--although it looked great and my dinner companion certainly enjoyed it--but I found plenty of good things to choose from for dinner. They do a choice of three starters for $14 and this made for an excellent dinner for me. They really understand beets here. They don't have a huge choice of beers (for Portland) but good ones in most categories. I had a great summer cocktail. Kind attentive service, sweet locale and good neighborhood for a post dinner stroll. The interface wants to know about large groups. I've been here with a good sized group (8 ish?) and there's another review that addresses groups. You wouldn't want to just drop in with a big group--it's a small place and I don't know where the ## limit would be.

Most delicious

By Sycamoresue49 |

It was the listing of deep fried stuffed olives that caused us to decide to go to Firehouse for dinner. From our first steps into the place, we knew we would not be disappointed. The aroma of firewood cooking was fantastic. Beer selections were good; I would recommend the IPA from a brewery in Bend. We decided on the 3 course meal for 28.00, which was a good choice. The deep fried stuffed olives and the deep fried cauliflower with creme fraiche were outstanding. The summer salad was superb;citrus creamy dressing on crisp, fresh veggies like pea pods, carrots, cucumber. There were three of us for dinner. I had the rock fish (waiter recommended), which was incredible. My husband said his hangar steak was the BEST he has ever had. Our daughter was not disappointed in the meatballs. Staff was friendly, locals were friendly. Great place; truly top notch.

Lovely evening

By mich-noto |

My husband and I were visiting our son and daughter in Portland, and made reservation at Firehouse on a Saturday night at 7pm. We'd had a large lunch, so just wanted a delicious minimal dinner. Firehouse was perfect! We were seated immediately, served with delicious wine that was well priced, ordered fried olives for an appetizer, that were beautifully stuffed, and 2 pizzas. Wood fired pizzas are really good! We had a margarita and a sausage and onion pizza. I liked the sausage and onion the most. Absolutely no complaints at all. My daughter suggested Firehouse because they are known for using produce from local farmers. That is enough recommendation for me.

Good restaurant

By NW748 |

The Firehouse is located in an old firehouse. There are not many tables so reservations seem important. This is a trendy and yet quaint spot. The restaurant leans mostly towards Italian fare. We had the fried cauliflower with lemon creme fraiche as an appetizer which was delicious. I had the homemade pasta with the house made sausage which was tasty but a very small portion that did not come with any bread, soup or salad for $16. My mother had a margherita pizza which was very good but quite burnt on the bottom. Overall we will come back if in the area. Pizza and appetizers seem like the best thing to order here.

Was Very Good!

By hinesight02 |

The Firehouse did not disappoint. Small menu that changes daily, but I'm guessing it's to ensure freshness and quality of food. The reviews raved about the small plate of cauliflower so I had to try it. Everyone at the table loved it. Everyone loved their meal and even the finniest person with us gave it a thumbs up. We had desert and wow! The chocolate mouse or whatever it was, was out of this world along with the lemon tart and coconut ice cream. Service was outstanding. I had steak and although I did not want to complain, I had ordered medium rare and it came out well done. They corrected it promptly and removed it from the check with out me having to ask. What a wonderful surprise to see a restaurant step forward first when a mistake is made. Go try it and eat outside under the lights if you can.

Best Pizza EVER!

By Andrew Hughs |

I cannot day enough about Firehouse. The staff are amazing, the food FANTASTIC! And the smell of the wood fire oven gives it that warm cozy feeling. Best place on either a summer or winter evening.

EXCELLENT FOOD!

By Sue from Bend |

We went to the Firehouse for a wedding rehearsal dinner and we were blown away by the food served! I understand it was Chef's Choice and it was pretty perfect. My favorite was the cauliflower...I believe it was baked. OMG, it was good. The meatballs were better than any I have had before. Absolutely excellent. YES, if we were in Portland, we would make our way to the restaurant. It's in a neighborhood. Easy on the street parking. Outside dining, too.

Enjoyable

By Bob K |

I was ready for the quaint setting of the firehouse nestled in the neighborhood, but not the ambience that hits you with the roasting chickens and brick pizza oven. We got there and took advantage of several happy hour specials so we could try several things, including wine specials. My friend thoroughly enjoyed the roasted chicken and I went for the pasta with pork ragu. Service was pretty good and this place rates high on value and comfort. I really like a place with a limited menu and everything they do, they do well.

A find in North Portland

By SW_Washington |

Yes, it is a former Firehouse. And a new wood-fired oven. We tried the rockfish and the hangar steak and both were excellent. Simple, straightfoward food prepared perfectly. The place was a bit noisy, but somehow it didn't matter.

1st. meal there

By BRuce M |

Well unlike some other reviews, we a very good meal and a nice time. We had excellent service on a very busy Valentine's Day evening. The chicken entree was fantastic and the desert, lemon polenta cake was light, just sweet enough, and had a very nice fennel "candy" topping. To my taste some excellent wine and beer choices. The service was thoughtful, and near perfect. We will be back again and it is worth a visit.

Best pizza since New Haven

By Leonard L |

If you like Frank Pepe on Wooster Street in New Haven, CT you love the pizza at The Firehouse. Excellent thin crust wood fired pies. First class ingredients - flour, tomatoes, cheese, etc. The quality you need for a good pie. Nice atmosphere in a neighborhood "joint".

Italian deliciousness

By Shrinkme |

Wood fired pizza and yummy handmade pasta old firehouse atmosphere cozy and fun fun to watch chefs cook very good food a little pricey recommend a reservation although we walked in and sat at the small bar and chatted up the cool bartender We are going again but the hard part is the decision of what to order

Casual night out

By ChrisABeaune |

Kinda fun to be inside an old firehouse; the vintage photos and brick walls were great. The menu is small but what we had was good. Our server recommended sharing the plates as food came out as it was prepared. I could have dined on the starters/sides alone. Roasted cauliflower with crème fraiche, beets, brussels sprouts. The radiccio salad (or maybe it was the Parmesan on it) was too salty. All entrees were winners except one: steak done beautifully, good meatballs, nice thin vegetarian pizza. The giant prawns - three - were very difficult to de-shell after grilling and were tough. The wine list was adequate; service really, really good.

Great neighborhood restaurant

By John G |

This restaurant does everything right. Portions are great, prices reasonable, service is amazing. Almost everything is cooked in their wood fired oven, adding great flavor and caramelization to the food. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a truly northwestern feel and a lot of locally source food prepared in a very creative way.

Just okay

By BBGraber |

After reading the good reviews we decided to give it a try. The building itself is cute but the restaurant layout is odd and chopped up. We only saw two parts of the dining room but saw stairs and not sure if there was more seating upstairs. We were seated quickly and the hostess was friendly enough but acted overwhelmed. She said they were SO busy but looking around there were several empty tables (on a Friday night during the holidays). Our order was quickly taken and was delivered just as quickly, almost too quickly. It was not a leisurely meal. It was as if they wanted you to eat and get out. One of the people in our group had to use the restroom and it was oddly located right in the dining room. This was a one person at a time restroom and there was a line in in the dining room which was really strange. The person in our group waited and waited and meanwhile our meals had been delivered. The food was just okay, not bad but not memorable. It's only been a few weeks and I can barely remember what we ordered. Portland sets the bar very high for food and drink and this place just didn't measure up. There are so many great choices in Portland that we just won't come back.

Delizioso!

By Judith95008 |

My husband and I were quite please with our meal. We love Italian, so we tried as many dishes as possible. Arancini, insalata romaine, pizza w/ mozzarella,& sausage, & tuna (alla Nicoise), served cool w/green beans, olives & red potato. Great summer meal. We will return,

Yummy..

By Jessejane72 |

I’m a fan.. Firstly the menu is very small. I like small menus. The cook can focus on the main reason we’re there. To be satisfied. They achieved this. It really only has a slight hue of Italian cooking but, really is culinary success. If your going to claim to be an Italian restaurant you wouldn’t charge for bread! I’m Italian and found this odd or even offensive. I had the meatballs twice here in last year. They changed. It was good not spectacular but the sauce was decent. Wife had the prawns. This plate is served as caught! If you don’t like the heads still on don’t order. Our friend had pork chop. I ordered pizza just to check it and I was underwhelmed! Just not cooked and to doughy toward middle. It needs work but, not horrible. We all shared like family style. All in all it was great. I was impressed and unimpressed at same time only because I hold a high standard more than most for Italian cooking. Pros Atmosphere Food Beer Menu small $$-$$$ Fire oven smells awesome Cons Pizza needs cooked longer but might burn A little pricey with drinks

Delicious food with a romantic, lovely atmosphere

By afox98 |

I was excited to check this place out when I heard it was in an old firehouse. I had the mushroom pizza, and it was a perfect portion and delicious. The pot de creme dessert with hazelnuts and salted caramel was absolutely delicious. Sit outside - the porch is cozy and beautiful with nice greenery around and festive lights. Great service, wonderful atmosphere.

Great restaurant!

By Mannehaut03 |

This restaurant is a little gem. It is set in an old Firehouse that has kept all of its charm. Food was delicious and service was excellent. If you are in Portland you should definitely go there.

Mussels can be a disappointment, but not here!

By Laura P |

Hands down, best mussels ever. Tiny, tender, sweet and perfect. The fried cauliflower with the lemon aioli is not to be missed, either. The decibel level is quite acceptable, an increasingly unusual experience as far as I am concerned. And the wait staff is attentive and informative without hovering or being precious about the food. We'll be back!

Excellent menu, Excellent staff

We missed getting to try this restaurant last visit because we didn't have weekend reservations...get them well in advance!. This visit we made sure and it was a wonderful surprise that our daughter who lives nearby arranged. Appetizers were fried olives and the cauliflower dishes, second courses were romaine hearts, mussels and pizza margherita, main dishes were hanger steak, cod and meatballs and while we shared the food among the four of us, there was plenty and each dish was really tasty and well prepared. Our server was extremely good and I am sorry that I don't remember her name (age thing), but the entire staff was good humored and really into the restaurants offerings. Wine list was ok, not as good as the food, but we are picky wine drinkers so. . . anyways it is Oregon so there are very few bad wine choices among the name wineries. This is a restaurant I would go back to in a heartbeat. Northeast Portland is hopping with new spots and many choices this is a GREAT choice.

Fabulous Firehouse

By JurgisRudkus |

We have been there four or five times and every meal is great. Get reservations except at predictably slow times. A new style restaurant with innovative food choices from local farms. The wood fired ovens make every meal fantastic. The hangar steak is great. The Italian meals are great. Great atmosphere. Entrees fifteen to twenty. With drinks, appetizers, desserts, and tip fifty per person and well worth it.

Pretty delicious

By Stew M |

We saw that Firehouse was one of the top rated restaurants on Trip Advisor, so we thought we'd give it a try. We made reservations as we heard it fills up and is pretty small. The place was pretty busy and we were seated right away. Our server took a bit to get us, but did a great job after that. The wines by the glass were pretty sparse, but we made a couple of good Italian choices. We ordered a Cesar salad, the meatball dish and a pizza with sausage. The food came pretty quickly and was delicious. I highly recommend this place try. The restaurant is in the middle of a neighborhood in the middle of some renewal. The area looked a little dicey as we drove to it, but it gets nicer as you get closer.

Nice Place

By jewelsholder |

Nice food although a little expensive and not much variety on the menue, but the food we had was off good quality

Unique foods, nice Italian wines, and great service

By BugsGWP |

I had never been to the Firehouse but went there for a friend's birthday. It is a "different" menu -- not too many entrees, but several other things (small plates, appetizers, pizzas, salads, etc., but with an italian theme. As a group of four, we got three entrees, 5 little plates, 2 salads, and the mussels and shared it all. They have a full bar, and two of us got glasses of the more robust of the italian wine selections, and the full group shared one desert. The service was friendly, attentive, and fast, and made the dinner all the more enjoyable. The setting, on the first floor of an old fire station, was remodeled beautifully, and had glass rolling garage doors which open for summer outdoor seating. Old brick, open beams, and the fiery oven added to the ambiance. We all enjoyed the food. Of the four small plates, we were not overly impressed with the broccoli or the rice balls, but the fire roasted artichoke and the cauliflower were excellent. The mussels are fire roasted as well, and served with melted butter; all at the table really liked them. Then two salads were very good and fun to share. Of the three entrees, two of us got the hanger steak, which is not commonly found -- best rare, this was superb. Served over roasted mushrooms and finger potatoes, it was a healthy amount with great taste and very tender. The other was the smoky roast chicken, served with greens and nuts. Moist, delicate smoky flavor, I'll probably get that the next time I go. Finally, the desert chosen by the birthday boy was "olive oil cake", served on top of some sweetened cream concoction with some (probably house-made) marmalade. If you are not into super-sweet deserts, it was great. I will be back to this place.

Always top notch

By bagpipe |

I have been going to The Firehouse for several years, and am consistently pleased with the results of every meal ordered. The menu is extremely creative, the execution of the dishes ordered is always accurate, the staff is professional and friendly (without being overbearing), and the space is very warm and welcoming. On top of that, there is terrific value for money. One of my favorite places (if you couldn't tell already!).

Italian gem in the NE

By ChadGigHarbor_WA |

Classic, historic brick firehouse interior, friendly service, and wonderful food. We enjoyed the wood oven broccolini and smoked sausage pizza with anchovies. Stand out Italian wine list, with focus on the south, with excellent $30-40 options.

Smokey

By EA_CDP |

If you like the fragrance of wood smoke, you will love this place. They cook their pizza's in a wood fired oven that (despite a sophisticated vent system) fills the restaurant with an aromatic smokey smell. Prices are exceptionally reasonable. Tried the Hangar Steak and house specialty Porchetta. Steak was wonderful; the Porchetta was amazingly tasty; but over half my portion was fat that I couldn't eat.

Steak dinner

By KIngTV1 |

This place is an old converted firehouse which lends itself to quite an interesting ambience. The Hanger steak entree was a hit with our group. A very nice option I the "3 course dinner" which gives you an appetizer, salad and entree. The roasted broccoli is great starter

Hits On All Cylinders

By Andrew C |

Housed in a great old repurposed fire station (hence the name), the Firehouse has been through a couple of owners at this point over the years, but they've all kept things pretty close to the original Italian-themed menu. Never had a bad meal here, love the space, and the service has always been, in varying degrees, polite, attentive or friendly -- or all three. Of course you should try their excellent pizza at some point, but the salads are hits too. And the cocktails never fail.

Okay place great neighborhood find

By TerisTravels2 |

Under-whelmed by the appetizers, we had the ricotta and salami balls and the roasted cauliflower, which needed more flavor - both of them. Entree of Salt Cod was excellent, served with pickled onions and beets. Entree of meatballs was okay. Just meatballs. No pasta or anything served with it. Hot, no AC, great service.

Great food at a reasonable price

By Carol Bradley C |

In general an evening at Firehouse is an evening well spent, and tonight was no different: The meatballs were delicious as always; the roasted cauliflower and mussels are our traditional favorites as appetizers; salads are always fresh and tasty (tonight's was Mike's winter greens with Humboldt Fog, currants, hazelnuts and red wine vinaigrette.) On the other hand, an unexpected disappointment was the Alaskan cod which was rather dry. Next time we'll return to one of our consistently delicious items, the hanger steak. A seasonal dessert, pumpkin bread pudding was very good. This place is definitely at the top of our list when visiting Portland.

A real gem. Excellent spot for dinner.

By Hema P |

What a delightful place to stop for dinner. It's a real gem. My friend and I made reservations but were unfortunately 20 mins late, the gave away our table but were great about getting us another one and gave us complementary appetizers - roasted beets and roasted cauliflower were just divine. We ordered a simple margarita pizza and it was just perfect. The atmosphere is warm, inviting and the staff are super nice. Don't miss the rhubarb and strawberry compote - it's just perfect, not too sweet and not too tart. I will go back here when I visit Portland again.

A charming firehouse with hot food and tepid service.

By HalfHave |

Amazing food. Yes local ingredients---does anyplace in Portland not? Charming firehouse---needs tablecloths, to break up the woody monotony. But it has the same hipster/hippie malaise that seems unavoidable in Portland. The service is always sub-par, even if the server is polite and has a wonderful personality they are always inattentive. Sat for minutes without water, without a "hello," without a "be with you in a moment." Ice tea--no sugar offered, no lemon. Forget about a refill. Why do they spend so much time, creating such wonderful food only to forget about the delivery? Why does Portland put up with this? The Firehouse is worth the trip, but only because of it's food. Fantastic: Gnocchi, pizza and small plates.

Lovely food but noisy

By costello_m |

We were recommended this restaurant by a work colleague who lives in Portland. The food was excellent. We got a nice private room upstairs for a group of 14 of us. But it was very noisy (hard floor and walls created echo) which was tiring and meant could only talk to 1-2 people at a time.

Great chicken

By yellowlabmom |

We've been traveling for awhile and just needed some good, basic comfort food. Firehouse fit the bill. Great small plates (beets), a super salad and perfectly cooked rotisserie chicken. Good service and fun drinks completed the evening. Great value for the money.

Good food reasonably priced

By Mrschef14 |

The firehouse was a real firehouse in the 1900's? The food looked and tasted great. I had the pizza, with homemade pepperoni which was baked in a real brick oven. Fresh mozzarella , a thin crust loaded with flavor ! My husband had the cod which was served with artichokes ,onions, olives in a bouillabaisse type broth. My ONLY complaint was that it was too smoky inside you could hardly breathe from the wood being burnt in the brick oven. They should ventilate it better., and I am surprised no one else complained about it. All in all that's why we left before they had a chance to even offer us dessert.

A great wedding experience

By Delaney S |

We had our wedding reception at the Firehouse, and it was a great experience for a reasonable price! There was no rental fee, the food and drink were delicious, and the space is very versatile and cute. We got compliments all night about the venue.

Great appetizers

By KIngTV1 |

I could make a meal out of the appetizers alone. The main dish portions aren’t huge so have no fear you have room for appetizers. The romaine is bright from the dressing. The beet dish has great balance with the crunch hazelnuts

Very nice, mostly

By Jotripper |

I was lucky enough to be treated to a birthday dinner here. The atmosphere is very cool and enjoyable. The arancini were just amazingly delicious and I will have to get this every time now. The salad was very nice and the pizza was fairly typical fare - thin, oven-fired, slightly burned crust with light, tasty toppings. My companions all enjoyed their meals too but the mussels and hanger steak looked especially good. The one sour note: Our waitress seemed inexperienced, which was a little frustrating. We were a party of 5 but had to wait 1 hour and 45 minutes for our entrees to arrive. People who had been seated in parties of 3 or 4 nearby were seated, served, and had paid before we got our meals. I'm not sure why the weirdly slow service happened to just our table. Sheesh, she could have at least made sure we had enough water.

Fire House Restaurant Portland

By kimowasabi |

We were recommended to this Restaurant from a hotel staff member,It is a neat little place in outskirts of Portland, its an Old firehouse made into a restaurant featuring a wood fired oven for pizza's .We had a Bianca pizza with Mushrooms it was very good ,also the wood fired Mussels were great ,its a little smokey inside from oven and the wait was about 25 minutes with a reservation.other than that its a good place.

Great food and a great space!

By David S |

My wife and I had dinner at the Firehouse on Date night. We sat at the bar per our usual. Good wine list and some decent glass pours. Dinner was excellent. My wife had the three course menu with the risotto balls, a great salad, and the meatballs with kale. The entree was delicious. I had a pizza from the wood oven. Also excellent. We will be back when it gets a little warmer out. It looks like they have a beautiful outdoor patio area that will be good during the summer.

More than a meal

By exafrica |

A meal in a converted firehouse beats most restaurants. Booked with open table, arrived on time and were immediately seated. A lot of energy and activity going on - it was friday night and every table was taken. The serving sizes looked huge so we opted for pizza in an attempt to control the calories. A wood fired oven pizza does make a difference. So glad I found this place.

summer sizzle with friends

By Avik C |

Great place to visit on a nice summer evening; we hung out with a bunch of friends on their patio setting and ordered the whole dinner shabang which included appetizer, salads, main course and desserts.....and of course we ordered cocktails/beers separately. Their fried cauliflowers were really good and their string beans were phenomenal. The pizza is extra thin crust so you won't fill your tummy even after you eat a bunch of slices. Pretty expensive for the amount of food you get.

Terrible service....poor food

By tom g |

Invited to dinner with friends at the Firehouse.... service was terrible at our table of six guests.... had to ask server for bread for the table.... then charged two dollars for the bread... charged a twenty percent gratuity for poor service and were never told in advance for these charges.. ordered pizza which was terrible... it was not cooked properly and it came to the table uncut..... told by server it was Neopolitian pizza which was cooked only one way...raw...I had to send the pizza back to be cut....several other guests were unhappy with their salads which were very small portions and over priced... normally I would have complained to management but being with friends and here at their request... I chose not to spoil our evening..stay away from this place... too many good places in Portland to eat....did send an email to the restaurant about this matter and received no response...really bad food and service....Tom & Myrt Grosso... Great service and food, excellent find in Portland!

By hankypanky505 |

We met two of our friends here for dinner and we were all super impressed with the great food and service at this place. It's not a huge space, but it's very cozy and warm with excellent food choices and beer/wine selections. Three of us had the steak, as was recommended by our very beautiful and helpful server, Estefy, and one of us had the pizza, and we were all blown away by how good everything was. I also had a kale salad, which I am not a fan of kale by any stretch, but it was also recommended by Estefy and it was *&^% awesome. So we will definitely be back, it's in a quiet neighborhood on NE Dekum. We went on a Saturday and luckily they had a open reservation. Cool place, cool people. A+

You want a pricey pizza ?

By CJDP22 |

Proprietors get a lot of mileage out of the old Firehouse. Looks / acts like a mostly locals joint. Ambiance is minimal, outdoor seating arrangements are just okay, inside feels crowded. Assuming the woman walking the tables was the maitre de, her constant checking for open tables was annoying. Pizza seems to be the fave of diners. Salad was adequate, but steak on arugula was way over priced. Limited wine menu, delightful hostess, and accommodating server.

Food influenced by southern Italy

By MTTravelbug |

Firehouse uses locally sourced fresh food. They say that a lot in Portland, the food doesn't always taste like it. IMO Firehouse can lay claim to the statement after our meal tonight. We started with two small plates, fried cauliflower and lemon creme fraiche (I wondered if fried cauliflower would be greasy - it isn't and this was amazing) and roasted and spiced carrots, yogurt and pumpkin seeds. (yogurt? Yawn? No, again delicious) The pizza bianca had broccoli, garlic and other goodies. This is my second wood fired pizza, and it definitely is different. The center of the dough was softer than I expected, cooked though, and toppings in the center seemed wetter, but again not uncooked. I'll leave the pizza with the result: two small pieces of crust edge left on the platter. For dessert we had the creme brûlée and a chocolate pot. Both fantastic. For drinks we had tonights rendition of something smooth. The only cocktails available are the ones on the menu, five combos offered. Don't be hesitant-try one. They also offer whiskey from Italy, but the drafts are from OR. Service was perfection - never in want and never felt hovered. Add $67 for dinner - we will be back, the only question is if we want to wait for menu change or not. NOT!

Excellent country Italian Food with a Wine list that is from Southern Italy

By Terri |

What a fun place. The front door is a little hard to find, but once you find it you will be delighted by the service and the food in this small little neighborhood restaurant. It was fun to sit down and notice the Italian flare to the place, and we started with a Campari and soda which was made perfectly. Then I had this wonderful Roast Pork that the Firehouse says come directly from a local farmer. It was served with greens and northern white beans. The other guests had Cod which was tender and flaky, and Hanger steak. All the dishes were excellent. We started out with a pancetta and fresh mozzarella pizza, I could not get enough of this light and flavorful pizza. We also had an excellent bottle of wine that our server recommended. Overall a great experience.

Salt lick

By WonderGirl1 |

We had high hopes for this place as it was recommended by one of our foodie friends. But from the beginning to end, everything was just too salty. Yikes, everything from the salad, pizza, and meatballs. Not sure what happened that night. Later we were told, he was recommending the Firehouse in NW. Oops, don't make the same mistake.

Great pizza AND desert

By CapeTownRunner |

Had a meal here with my parents, and it lived up to the reputation for good food. Excellent pizza and an even better cheesecake desert. The service was slow and food arrived before drinks which was a first!

Real Gem

By Matt G |

My wife and I stopped here for dinner on a Tuesday night after flying into PDX. The first thing we noticed was the great smell. Our waitress was very attentive and made several great recommendations on food and wine. Our meal and experience was outstanding and very reasonably priced. We'd highly recommend you stop by for a meal.

Wow! Just wow!!

By Lisa B |

Super cute place! Great ambiance! Our server, George, was wonderful!! Very attentive and really seemed to enjoy his job. We ordered the flash fried cauliflower and mushroom pizza. The cauliflower was delicious. Not greasy at all. The pizza was OMG delicious!! Zero complaints!! HIGHLY recommend!!

All we could say was, "Wow!"

By TheRealPhilGold |

1st time visit last weekend, and it most definitely will not be the last. Restaurant located in an old firehouse in a funny neighborhood. Charming, casual vibe to the place, some outdoor seating areas that would be great if the weather ever gets better ... service is relaxed and friendly, but competent and knowledgeable, too. Menu has lots of interesting choices. Took advantage of the three course for $27 deal, which is a good bargain. Since it was our first time, we went with a couple of signature dishes - hangar steak & meatballs w/ kale. Absolutely fantastic, both of them! Pace is probably slow for some people -- couple at the table next to us got very jumpy when no-one took their orders within 5 minutes -- but we felt unhurried and able to enjoy everything to its fullest. There for more than two hours, but not rushed at any time. We aare looking forward to returning and turning friends on to the place, too!

Firehouse houses wood fired grill deliciousness

By la2nj |

Be sure to make a reservation, as this place gets crowded and deservedly so. You can smell the smoke aroma outside before you enter the restored firehouse and its cozy atmosphere. The menu features an array of small plates, pizzas, and spit roasted meats. There is also a happy hour menu with really good pricing. I especially enjoyed the fresh vegetable small plates such as the wood oven roasted acorn squash with saba and pumpkin seeds and the fried cauliflower with lemon creme fraiche (which was more a crispy sautee than deep fried with breading). I was a wee bit disappointed with the pizza as the middle was on the soggy side, perhaps the crust there was too thin as the outer edges were well cooked with that special taste from the wood fired oven; nevertheless, it had good flavor with its sauce, fresh mozarella, and spicy salami. Portions are generous, so left-overs abounded from all in our party.

Birthday Blast

By LofL |

With family we enjoyed dinner at Firehouse. The varied menu appealed to all. Some had pizza, some had pasta, and some had meatballs while others had chicken and tuna. The servings of salads as well as small plates were huge. Our server handled our group of 11 well.

Great experience

By Flintstone10 |

Great food - mainly out of the oven, nice atmosphere in old fire station within an interesting neighborhood and excellent service

It's a must for mussels and pizza

By Scott M |

They still make wonderful Naples-style pizza (this time the roasted mushroom - yum!); and of course the grilled mussels with drawn butter are pillowy-soft - truly the best anywhere. We added the House Made Tagliatelle with Manila clams, sausage, white wine, chili, garlic, parsley, pecorino, grilled bread, which was scrumptious, and the Chicken Liver Mousse Crostino with charred onion, cauliflower pickles, fried garlic, fried onion - tasty but small and maybe a bit too complex. Lovely service by Kamile on a busy night.

Thanksgiving in Portland 2017

Awesome local neighborhood restaurant. We had the fried cauliflower as an appetizer and everyone enjoyed. We also shared three different pizzas and all were delicious. Service was excellent and food are quickly. Definitely recommend if you want pizza in Portland. 5 stars

Not what I expected

By poppy01calgary |

We went to this place based on the reviews in Tripadvisor, but I can't say I was completely impressed. The atmosphere is unique and the staff were very friendly, but it was very busy and hard to get in without a reservation. I had the wood oven pizza and although it looked great on top, the bottom was almost all black. I expected some burn on it, but not that much. It was also too soggy which made the very thin crust kind of chewy. My husband had the chicken which did taste good and we also had the almond cake which was the best part of the meal.

Best meal of our trip!

By Peter E |

I can't say enough about our meal at The Firehouse in Portland, OR. My wife had the fish special and I had their homemade tossed pizza. The best Jerry, The best! My only regret is that we live in Atlanta because I'd be there at least once a month for that pizza. I haven't had one that good in years. The place should be much higher in the TripAdvisor rates.

Great Fun, Very Good Food!

By RobCapt |

Arrived early for dinner with five adults and two children in high chairs. The staff set us up at a nice table outside as it was a beautiful evening. We were encouraged to order from the Happy Hour menu since it expired in 5 minutes and was a deal. Thereafter, we chose a couple of pizzas, more salads and some excellent, reasonably priced wine. Everything tasted fresh and was well prepared. The service was excellent.

Delicious dinner in a warm ambience

By secluded |

We couldn't get a table inside on a Sunday night, which turned out fine -- we ate outside on the quiet and pleasant back patio, with a simple string of lights overhead and a bit of Italianate landscaping around us. Friendly, helpful, relaxed service and every course was delicious. We chose an assortment of Italian-inspired appetizers; four different main courses, all great (pizza, gnocchi, meatballs, and steak); and shared three perfect desserts (almond cake, chocolate cake, and a fruit dessert.) Highly recommend. The combination of warm welcome, attractive setting, and tasty food made this our favorite meal in a week of great eating in Portland.

Interesting...

By J Kimberly W |

Firehouse is seated nicely in the Woodland neighborhood. Met my fellow foodie out for dinner/HH and thought we would give this place a try. We made reservations, but got there at 5.30pm and it wasn't too crowded, but by the time we left, there was a line. The service (Kristen) was a pleasure, very attentive, helpful and accommodating (we sometimes order unstructured from the menu, and they gladly took care of us). The food was??? Okay, a bit under seasons for my liking, but I think they have a rustic mantra, which kind of explains it, but not sure. It's another trendy spot in NE, and although the service was over the top wonderful, the jury has come in on the food, and I would not return due to the number of food locals and options we have here in Portland that I know the food is good. Try it, your taste choice may be very different from mine, I just like good food, and expect it when I am paying good money for it. :(

always memorable for great food and congenial ambiance

By PatricksMom |

After my August dinner experience, my husband and I have returned for a big wedding dinner served family style and New Year's Eve dinner for 3 couples. The food on all occasions has been outstanding. We still love the cocktails, the deep fried olives, the many varieties of pizza, all the entrees and the innovative desserts. On New Year's, I enjoyed the beet salad and the hanger steak. The rotisserie chicken was huge and succulent. Save room for dessert: pots de creme was silky and rich; almond cake superb. Wine list carefully selected, interesting and affordable. The Dekum St. address is off the beaten path for those staying downtown but well-worth the effort. It is becoming my favorite Portland restaurant for delicious food and thoughtful service in an easy yet intimate style. The owner beams when you enter and truly tries to please you. The staff is beautifully trained and attentive. We enjoyed a complimentary round of after dinner drinks on New Year's. Menu on line.

Very cozy and left feeling full

This place was amazing in every aspect. The food was delicious the staff was attentive and the atmosphere was very comfortable. We have been back a few times. The happy hour was great.

Great for a large group

By Jim A |

I recently booked the Firehouse for a group of 30 people. Was reluctant at first since it said "family dinning", however it turned out great. They have a menu to choose from and had the pizza as starters, then the Chicken & Beef for the main dish. Most people were full after the starters. Then the mains were extremely tasty. The chicken was smoked and they were fighting for leftovers of the chicken. The desert was small but for good reason. Very rich in flavor. Was a little pricey, but worth it. Worked with Kasey to set it up and she was fantastic to work with.

Tiny portions, quite expensive!

By Dee B |

The food tasted alright but the portion was super tiny. Both me and my partner were still quite hungry after dinner. The meals were pricy. It was dark and noisy. I will not go back there again.

Quality is lower than the Price

By PDXNicCage |

This resturant is difficult to get into without a reservation but I can't see why. The resturant has good atmosphere but the food wasn't very good. I tried the mussels and had a pizza. My wife was unimpressed with the chicken. The service was slow, timing on dishes was off (appetizers came out with 20 minutes between them so some portions of the table had food and some didn't). It was disappointing. Go to breakside instead

Just Ok

By RamsFan491 |

Firehouse Restaurant is located in a great historic Firehouse so the atmosphere is pretty cool. Very good service and drinks but the food was disappointing. The actual menu was much smaller than the one listed online and then they were out of many things so the choices were very limited. We decided to have pizza. Opinions on pizza are difficult as it is so subjective but I will do my best to just describe it so you can form your own opinion. Hand tossed crust very thin, slightly burned which came through on the flavor, very soggy from the center to about 3/4 of the way out(had to fold the piece first in order to hold it in your hand), very few toppings(about 8 pieces of sausage on the entire pie). Sauce had good flavor and I liked how they melted chunks of mozzarella cheese over the pie. I prefer the thinner, crispier crust with a good amount of toppings so I was a bit disappointed. If I were to come back it would be for drinks and appetizers as the bar atmosphere is fun, unique appetizers and good service.

Always Good

By Steven M |

Great little neighborhood restaurant. We have been at 3-4 times, and we continue to love this place. Looking at the other reviews, I noticed the issues with the he staff. I was glad to see that they have implemented a dedicated host to greet you and assist with the the waitstaff. We were immediately greeted and showed to our table. The renovated firehouse is unique and love the open hearth wood oven. I have noticed a little issue with the air flow and sometimes does get smokey. Also, the management needs to address the issue of flies in the restaurant - I have noticed our last two visits an inordinate number of flies. Our waitstaff were attentive - they do tend to be a little aloof, but perform their jobs with efficiency. The food is always consistent. We have enjoyed everything we have ever had - some of the best rotisserie chicken that I have had in Portland. We did try their pizza this last go around, and I think they have the dough issue handled. I have noticed some reviews that the dough was not quite cooked through and chewy. The last two pizzas we have had have been perfect - a perfect appetizer for two. I am a little worried that the menu is somewhat static, and not updated for the season. Lentils with my chicken seemed a little out of season. We will keep returning to Firehouse. Love the easy atmosphere and wonderful food. Food: 38/40 Atmosphere/Decor: 16/20 - solve the fly problem Staff/Service: 18/20 Value: 19/20 Total: 91/100

Best pizza in Portland, OR

By Greg Z |

OMG! A friend wanted us to take him to Firehouse for his birthday. We were there mid-week and it was packed! Great beer selection and the BEST pizza ever! Delicious! Authentic Neapolitan style. The yummiest of crusts - thin and crispy but a little chewy at the same time. And great salads as an appetizer! The table next to us were all Italians so you know it's got to be good and authentic! Highly recommend this place! Looks like they have a nice patio in summer. Will be back!

Nice neighborhood pizza place

By Craig A |

Portland has many hidden gems! Firehouse Pizza is a quite place tucked in a small neighborhood. The food was good, the place is really quaint, service for us was excellent and they were busy! Give it a shot!

Terrible service

By hainlinetravels |

The food was good. That's where the good part ends. Service overall was terrible. We had a reservation; nevertheless, we waited 45 minutes for a table. We then waited 15 minutes for the waitress to get our drink order (and only when we got up and asked someone to send her over). She then brought some of the drinks. We then asked her to take our food orders. That was the last time we saw the woman who appeared to have been our waitress. Thereafter, a series of different people other than our waitress brought us the rest of the drinks and our food. No one asked us how the food was. No one asked us if we needed anything else. For dessert orders, we asked for a dessert menu and then dealt with an entirely different person (who appeared to be the bartender). Because we were a table of more than 6, our bill included a 20% tip. When we left, even though we were the last party to leave and staff were milling around cleaning up, no one said goodbye, thank you, or even acknowledged our departure. Good food was wasted; the experience was terrible.

Great meal!

By jimhWindsor_Colorado |

Took a customer to Firehouse in Portland, it was great. We had the beet salad and cauliflower and bread with dill dipping sauce for appetizers, had the meat balls and Albacore for entrees. Ended using with sticky toffee cake for dessert, amazing. Service was excellent, meal as well, great place.

Wood fired Pizza leave taste of ash in your mouth

By Neil C |

The ambiance is great. The service is great. The salad and appetizers are good. The wood fired pizza sounds great, but was executed poorly. The entire restaurant was smoky when we entered and our clothes smelled smoky when we left. I'm not sure if they had a new pizza chef that didn't know how to use the oven or if that is just how they cook there. The bottom of our pizza and spots on top had spots heavily charred while the rest was fine. Unfortunately the char and ash taste lingers long after you are done eating. I wish I could give a better review, the burnt pizza and smoke killed it.

Fantastic Dining Experience!

By LorLorSam |

My friends and I were staying in an airbnb rental nearby, and decided to go to Firehouse for our first dinner in Portland. We were wowed! Great location in a gorgeous old firehouse in a historic neighborhood. It was a perfect summer evening, so we sat outside on the patio. The service was excellent- friendly & very helpful without being intrusive. We shared a couple appetizers and two salads, which were all very good, but the standout was the fried cauliflower with lemon creme fraiche - don't miss that, even if you think you don't like cauliflower!!! Two of us had pizza from their wood-fired oven, which was absolutely delicious, and two had the half chicken served with grilled peaches, fresh ricotta, & spiced almonds, drizzled with saba...one of the best things I have ever eaten! Topped off with glasses of superb Italian wine, this dinner was a fantastic way to start our Portland getaway! Very highly recommended...I will return if in the area again.

Surprisingly good

By kcportland2 |

Decided to go here kind of at the last minute, but was still able to make a reservation ahead. Indoors was too smoky for my wife's asthma, but outdoors was very pleasant with tables arranged in a horseshoe surrounded by a planted berm which kept the street noise down. The food was quite good: surprisingly delicious fried cauliflower, chilled beets with mint leaves, salad with our favorite Humboldt Fog shaved on it, and very good hanger steak done perfectly with potato slices to die for. Dessert was fabulous, a chocolate pot de creme with a salty caramel layer on top. Wow. Our waitress was attentive, giving us time when we needed it but not abandoning us, informing us about the wine choices, even getting down and fixing the leg of our table so it didn't wobble. We will definitely return for another meal.

OK food, nothing special for the price

We ate here on a Wednesday evening and found that they served "OK" food, but nothing special that was worth the long drive on the freeway to come here. Service was also OK with friendly guys at the oven when we entered the restaurant. The charge of $5.00 for bread was a bit high and should have been part of the meals we ordered.
