If you like Southern food this is the place

By Russ855 |

The menu here is classic southern fare in an almost diner like setting. It is very popular and packed the night we were there. Make reservations as it resides in LA Live and in the convention center area. You can get all of your favorites such as fried chicken, collards, black eyed peas, fried okra, yams, biscuits, etc. The service was very friendly but a tad slow since it was packed. You clearly need reservations as people were lined up at the door. There were more drivers waiting for take out orders at the entrance than dine in patrons. They do have a full bar which is plus. The old fashion was very sweet and smoky with a rock sugar swizzle stick to boot. Well if you are not having sweet tea you might as well have sweet bourbon!

True down home flavor! When visiting the restaurant, you’ll be greeted by a friendly and welcoming staff. The menu includes delicious southern style dishes which don’t disappoint the palate. For some old skool style, good ole Kool Aide resides on the beverage menu and is available for some spiking if you dare.

Excellent Chicken and Waffles, but Crazy Busy and Packed!

By Nupester |

No doubting the food quality, I had chicken tenders on a waffle and it was outstanding. The waffle was really tasty, I could eat it alone for breakfast and be very happy. Good portions and reasonable prices. The place was packed so service was a bit slow for me, even at the bar. With its prime location in downtown, I imagine that’s often the case. So just allow some time. But I can definitely eat here before a hockey/basketball/concert event in the future!

My sister's Birthday

By Chick D |

My husband and I with family members went to Fixins Soul Kitchen for the 1st time. It was a surprise Luncheon for my sister's 69th birthday. The food was Delicious ( Large portions). The owner Kevin Johnson stopped at every table and greeted all the guest. It thrilled my sister. Kevin Johnson the retired basketball player for the Phoenix Suns was very nice and welcoming.

A MUST in LA

Outstanding friendly and attentive service and food that feeds the soul. The food is absolutely amazing. Former NBA star Kevin Johnson runs this amazing business with the same excellence he demonstrated in sports.

I have to admit I was a little apprehensive… Soul food/country food in downtown Los Angeles? But let me tell you….this is delicious. I had fried chicken, greens… It was all really really good. Wash it down with some red Kool-Aid? Yes please! The only thing I wish they had was some mashed potatoes and gravy to go with it. Worth a stop for sure.

First night first choice

First night in town made reservations and I’m glad we did. The restaurant was packed for a Monday night. We each ordered something different and not a single complaint. Food was hot and the service top notch. So glad we were able to try this gem.

Fixins Soul Kitchen

Fixins Soul Kitchen 800 W. Olympic Blvd, Suite A150 Los Angeles, CA 90015 213.799.7685 is a full-service soul food restaurant that celebrates African American culture and traditions is owned by former NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson and his wife, Michelle. Many of the people in my party wanted the smothered oxtails with rice and their choice of sides. I chose the Fried Catfish battered in cornmeal served with corn fritters with mac and cheese, Collard Greens with Turkey and Corn muffins. What I didn’t like about my food is that you got 1 piece of fish. When I cut into the fish there was a gap between the meat and the batter making the fish look like it was sliced in half. I heard one of the young ladies in my party say that her Shrimp and Grits were very tasty For dessert I ordered their peach cobbler and it came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It had just the right amount of crust just the way I like it. Someone else ordered the banana pudding and I heard them say it was FIRE. To drink I had the Lavender Lemon Drop with Patron, lemon juice and lavender syrup (yummy) Normally when I go to a restaurant, I have leftovers, this time I didn’t. Would I go back, YES, just to try something different. They did have music playing during our visit over the speaker which was a little loud for me. We had to keep talking over the music. I was told they have a DJ on certain days.

Good Southern Cuisine

By thisgirl_Gray |

Finally got a chance to visit this restaurant in DTLA for lunch with friends. First off we were kindly greeted at the door by the owner. Second, we had a reservation so no waiting. The restaurant was busy but the wait wasn't long. Our server was excellent and attentive. He also didn't rush us. Since they had a live DJ the music and atmosphere was 🔥 and so we lingered longer than we normally would. Lastly, the food and drinks were delicious. Will definitely make this place a go-to when wanting a good southern meal. I'm very picky when it comes to southern cuisine and this place did not disappoint.

OMG! Delicious chicken

By iris B |

Went for dinner before the Clippers and Lakers game. We didn't have reservations but it was a little before 5 o'clock so we were seated immediately. Our server promptly took our order. Both of us ordered chicken and waffles. The chicken was freshly cooked and was piping hot on top of a light and fluffy waffle. Great service and reasonable prices, especially for LALive. We can't wait to go back to try other items on their menu.

One of the best dining experiences in LA!

By Lv2Trav |

If you are craving Soul Food, a nice clean atmosphere, cordial and personable service, Fixins is the place. Our party of 6 ordered: smothered pork chops, fried catfish, fried chicken, collared greens, cheesy grits, black eyed peas, mac & cheese, fried deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes - and it was all tasty and cooked to perfection. Service was excellent on a very, very busy day after Thanksgiving. We all appreciated the service. There's a line out the door for a reason folks. Go there and enjoy not only the best southern cooking in Los Angeles but also just an overall dining experience not to be missed.

Bustling place with decent food

By Ethical1 |

Located in the center of downtown LA. Extremely busy on Sunday afternoon so reservations are a MUST!! High ratings to the staff and the customer service from the moment of entry to the last step out the door. The food was ok..I am sure others reading will be shocked. I come from a place where spicy means flavorful and doesn't mean HOT. There is something about the experience of actually tasting the flavor of my food that I enjoy. Chicken was fried too hard for my liking and far too HOT 🔥. The black eyed peas were good, but again far too HOT. I was barely able to eat them later that evening. The fried geen tomatoes were VERY good!! Catfish also appeared to be fried too hard and to be honest, I dont believe it's farm raised catfish. Texture looked more like Basai. Wasn't my order so I didnt speak out, especially since those who invited me rave about the place. Ambience is very urban country cute and bustling. Lots of memorabilia on the walls reflecting black culture. DJ playing old school jams which were great, but so loud that you couldn't hear the person next to you. It explains why the noise factor was very loud in the restaurant. I really wanted to rate the restaurant much higher. Impressed with the service, just not the food. Our wait person was phenomenal!! Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.

Brunch or else!

By Inspire26118 |

Great, great spot for the whole family or the crew. Live DJ during brunch and the playlist is right. There is a nice size full bar and reservations are recommended. You dine inside or out and the vibe is still a vibe. The decor is southern with an attitude in a good way. Come hungry because the plates runneth over with an abundance of southern delights. From the fried chicken to the fried catfish, they come out cooked to perfection. Sides, sides, and mo’ sides. The collards are just right. Mac & cheese is indeed cheesy, baked like Grandma used to make. Grits were good, quite possibly stone ground. Can’t forget the waffle, before you knew it the plate was bare. Drinks are classic staples like kool-aid and sweet tea. Mix it up with lemonade if you dare. Arnold Palmer pairs well with the summer season. Take your drink with you after you dine. Good times all the way around. Very nostalgic! Shout to Keith Powers for the plug! Hope to see this brand expand in the future.

Never a dull moment

By Creeping_Death_LA |

Any restaurant around LA Live is happening and crazy busy especially on the weekends. We wanted to grab a drink before seeing All Within My Hands concert with Metallica at the Microsoft theatre. We were lucky to get one seat at the bar and I was able to stand behind it, yes that's how busy this area is. Nice friendly service but the drink prices are sky rocket high but nothing unusual at these restaurants. I will be back to try some fried chicken because it looked finger lickin' good.

Delicious Soul Food!

By Quiana S |

My husband, daughter, and I diner here on 2 separate occasions when we visited Los Angeles. This restaurant does not disappoint. Collaboratively, we had chicken and waffles, fried catfish, shrimp and grits, oxtails, man & cheese, candied yams, cornbread muffins, biscuits, and cheesy grits. Everything was seasoned to perfection and tasted really great. The two different waitresses were equally as awesome. They were pleasant, knowledge, and possessed great demeanors. We had prompt service and did not wait long on either occasion. If you’re in the area I would highly recommend dining her.

Watch what you pick

By David L |

The service is great but ordering the food like the gumbo that you have to pay extras to get shrimps in when have you ever had to pay for shrimps and gumbo. And the desserts are overpriced for the size that they give you. The avian of the facility and the music is very nice but spend your money well for overpriced plates

Simply Delicious

First time here. Simply delicious soul food on all accounts. Friendly staff. Clean. Reservations best.

Whatever you do, do not order the fried chicken

By Inspire62572437549 |

Their fried chicken is oil with a side of chicken. I threw up after eating the fried chicken. Also the chicken was terribly seasoned, even the store bought fried chicken is better seasoned. Like this should've tasted amazing since I didn't eat all day before going to this place, but it was bland and only oil. My entire family gave up trying to eat the fried chicken, it was so bad. They have a couple of unique ideas as cool-aid pickles in hamburgers and some strange stuffed squash. My siblings tried out the hamburger and could not finish it when they usually are able to finish off hamburgers bigger than the ones served here. We could not finish a single thing we ordered so we left with the food in boxes and tossed it when we got home. The only good thing they had in this restaurant was the Fixins hot sauce. I am absolutely never eating from here again.

Soul Food at LA Live

By elizabethlascheid |

Fixins is great soul food. It is located at LA Live where there are a lot of things to do. It is near the Convention Center and Cypto Center (Staples). There is also bowling nearby at Lucky Strike. I suggest reservations, but you can get in without them, you may have a wait, but there are things to see while you wait for a table. The place is spotless, the bathrooms are clean. The service here is wonderful. Everyone is so nice and they know their menu well. Your food will come out pretty fast and it is hot and exactly what you ordered. The servers will check to make sure you have all you need, but you will not feel rushed. They have great Soul food. You can't go wrong with Fixens if you are looking for some great Southern food. They have it all. We love everything we have ever had there. They have an amazing catfish and their chicken and waffles are great. We love their greens and all their side dishes. They have a great selection, so just look at the menu and you will find something. A vegetarian can get a good meal here, a vegan, not so much. They also have the best desserts. Get the red velvet cake if they have it, if not the peach cobbler is amazing. You will need to pay to park and walk on over. It is at LA Live, a fun location in Downtown LA. Have the best time.

Good restaurant but if on business trip, make sure you can get individual receipts.

By mariaoA7378JB |

This place is very generous with the portions. The menu will accommodate most dietary choices. The price for the meals are reasonable. I will go back when I go back to this town. They did not want to give individual receipts for large groups. If on a business meeting requiring individual receipts, be sure to get the manager to approve individual receipts.

Soul Food in LA

By Trina D |

We had dinner reservations at Fixins prior to the Lakers vs Pelicans game. We checked in with the hostess and she told us it would be a 15 minute wait before they could get us a table. We asked if the bar was open seating and it was so we went over there to grab a drink and order food instead. Our table did open up about 25 minutes later (I know because I got a text & the hostess came around looking for us) so I'm glad we found an open spot at the bar. This place is a vibe and it was busy right before the game. The bartenders were friendly and we ordered the Po' Me Some Honey ($16) and Adult Kool-Aid ($14). I had the Chicken and Waffle (2 wings & a waffle, $9). My drink was refreshing. The chicken wings were perfectly brined and crunchy. The waffle was kind of soggy, TBH. The pinkish butter they put on it didn't even melt. For dessert, I tried the banana pudding ($9). It's really good and the pudding isn't too sweet. It was the perfect end to a delicious meal. Service was good despite not getting seated with our reservation time. I definitely recommend getting a reservation on OpenTable or trying for an open spot at the bar if you don't want to wait in line. Fixins is legit for soul food. We would come back to try more of the menu the next time we're in the area.

The Best Soul Food.

By elizabethlascheid |

Fixins is the best Soul Food we have ever had and we love Soul food. This one is located at LA Live next to the Crypto Center and the Peacock Theater. I urge you to make reservations. The place will get crowded at dinner time and there is a long wait if you don't have a reservation. On this occasion they had a DJ, which is nice but was much too loud to also enjoy dinner or have a conversation. The place is super clean as are the restrooms. It is just so cute inside, they have lots of cute sayings to read on the wall and we just love the way the place is set up. The service is stellar. They are very nice, will help you will the menu and always check on you. The food is just the best. It does not matter what you get as it is all wonderful. They have the best greens and they have a selection. They have okra, salads, some with okra and some with greens in them. You want it in the way of salad and they have it. A vegan would be happy here. Their waffles and fried chicken are just as good as Roscoe's and that is saying a lot. They have wonderful dinner rolls and corn bread. It is all just amazing and their desserts are so tasty. You will love this place. What are you waiting for.

MAKES YOU WANNA SMACK YOUR MAMA!!!

Best Vibe in LA Live

By burleson4 |

Love this place, owned by Kevin Johnson former mayor of Sacramento and point guaud of Phoenix Suns. What makes this place awesome was dood delicious, staff service on Superbowl Sunday was impeccable as busy as they were and Kevin as the owner was attentive, supportive to his team as a real player is and a genuine soul. Make a reservation and experience a class act in customer service with great food and drinks.

Wonderful

FOOD WITH FLAVOR!! FOOD WITH FLAVOR!!!

By GoGoBear |

My wife and I dine out a lot, and one of the things you learn is that most of time, even when having a perfectly acceptable meal, the food lacks flavor. The Mrs. used to own a restaurant, and she explained to me that this is simply the way it is, because flavor involves risk…different people, different palates. At high end restaurants they try to address this by using high quality, fresh ingredients so the taste of the ingredients stands out. But it is pretty much only at “ethnic” restaurants…. Italian…Cajun…whatever…do they risk using significant amounts of seasoning. So, it was a most welcome and pleasant surprise to find ourselves dining at Fixins (admittedly an “ethic” dining spot) and being able to actually TASTE OUR FOOD!!! My wife planned a couple nights out for us while we were on a short stay in LA, and having read reviews someplace, she picked this establishment based on the positivity. I believe she said they didn’t take reservations, so I was worried the place would be packed with a long wait, but the bellman at the Hotel Figueroa where we were staying knew the owner (the owner – Kevin Johnson, retired NBA player, formally of the Phoenix Suns, former mayor of Sacramento) and sent a text in advance of our arrival to pave the way. The establishment is clean and bright (not all “ethnic” places are) which gave me pause, as I was worried we were in for a “Mc Soul Food” dining experience. I was MOST HAPPY to be mistaken. You know how when you are enjoying something REALLY good you make that “mmmmm” sound after your first bite? That was us after pretty much every bite. For real. FOOD. WITH. FLAVOR. Opened with Catfish Nuggets. Was reminded of how much I miss and love good catfish. Had biscuits on the side. Delicious. For my main I had the Shrimp and Grits. After a couple bites I got up and went looking for the kitchen so I could slap the chef (no, I didn’t…it is just an expression…it’s a “Black thing” …it means it was really, really, really, good) The Mrs. had the Smothered Pork Chop. Outstanding. We spent the evening trading bites of each other’s food. Mac and Cheese side? As good as my mother used to make. Mac and Cheese with FLAVOR. Did NOT taste like “Kraft Dinner”. Peach Cobbler for dessert? Hell to the yes. Cobbler is not PIE people! Peach Cobbler is heavy on the cinnamon and nutmeg and doesn’t just have the crust…it has the “dumplings” on the inside of the filling as well. This is as authentic as I can ever recall having since my childhood eating Peach Cobbler prepared by my mom’s best friend, who was a baking goddess. I am assuming my wife got the Banana Pudding, and that it was fantastic as well (truthfully I don’t remember, but I CANNOT imagine that after having enjoyed what we did I would have let her get away with not ordering it, or that it would have been anything less that great). How good was everything? I was back there the very next morning to have the Chicken and Waffles, because you CANNOT get decent Chicken and Waffles in Seattle. Verdict? Good…hit the spot (wee bit cold though…) Back to dinner… Service? Friendly and polite to a fault. For some you could tell this was there first time working in a restaurant, but that is ok. Not every place can be a $150/head steak joint with a sommelier and wait staff making $100k a year plus on tips. Most important was that they were all trying VERY hard to be helpful. KJ has certainly imparted to his team that they should be giving their all and doing their best. Friendly and polite goes a long way at this price point. If I lived in LA I’d probably be here twice a week (I’m getting hungry just thinking about it as I write this review). Kevin mentioned he had been looking to open a location in Seattle and we told him we wanted a piece of the business (and I was NOT joking…Kevin, you’ve got my number!!). Oh right…that conversation came about because Kevin came by our table, greeted us, took pictures, gave us his cell phone number, boom. Working hard, trying hard… So, so enjoyed this meal. Enjoyed it so much I have been considering flying back just to take my mother, and I hate LA. Absolutely the highlight of our short stay in Los Angeles. Thanks for the memories KJ / Fixins!

Soul Kitchen stole our hearts!

We ate 2 meals here and both were excellent! The staff was friendly and engaging. Breakfast is served until 3 pm, the menu choices are extensive, the sides are all tempting!

We loved it so much we went back the next day.

Simply the Best

Simply the BEST soul food restaurant ever!!!! Initially we stumbled upon this restaurant just walking through LA Live. The food is absolutely amazing!! Reminds me of Sunday dinner at my grandparents house when I was child. Every time I’m in Los Angeles I make it a point to eat here at least once during my visit. The staff is super friendly and the DJ is on point!! Mr Johnson please open a location in San Diego preferably downtown on 5th avenue…

A MUST VISIT LOCATION!!

I found this restaurant by reading different reviews since my hotel was located by the Crypto Arena and this food is to die for. The food is so great this is the only place I died at during my entire stay in L.A.. The staff was amazing. The vibe was great with the DJ. I met so many other people who were just dining in locals and tourist.

Oh my gawd, you must eat here!!!

Oh my gawd, you must eat here!!! The food is excellent and the atmosphere is superb. The staff is professional and the service is A1. The food came out fast and was ohhhh, soooo good! The yams, collard greens, black eyed peas, and perfectly seasoned catfish were amazing. The owners came to our table and made us feel like family. Shout out to Aunt Pearl and Uncle Tony for making us feel welcome. This is a definite "must do" whenever you are in LA.

On Saturday May 27th at 10:59 am we arrived. Plenty of tables available. We order the Chicken n waffles. I ordered the blue plate with eggs over hard. The eggs arrived over easy. When they corrected the order the eggs were way too salty. The turkey meat was hard and dry not tender at all. Grits were good but too dry. We LOVED the collard greens!! The yams were good. Peach cobbler was good; pretty sweet. We wanted to purchase three 3x tee shirts. The shirts were not available. We would have returned to try dinner but it’s our last day. A+ for decor and music. C+ for food. The waitress was wonderful and very kind. Arrive early or be prepared to wait.

Fantastic and authentic.

Fantastic dinner after the La comic con convention. We didn’t realize how hungry we were until we smelt the food. The wait was totally worth it, and the food was full of flavour. The strawberry lemonade was also great. I can’t believe it wasn’t even $100.

We just love Fixins' Soul Kitchen. This one is at LA Live in Downtown LA and it can get crowded so I suggest going during off hours. Parking is for a fee in a lot behind LA Live and it is a little bit of a walk to get there. But you will see the line. The service there is so very nice and they are fast. You get your order right the first time and you are just very comfortable there. The seating is nice and the place is cute and it has great decor on the walls. You will love it. All of their food is good and we have pretty much gone though the menu. They have great greens, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and their fried chicken is amazing. They also have great waffles and they even have super salads. They have wonderful ice tea. Everything is good. The prices are fair and if you want you can get it to go. Have a great time.

WONDERFUL Chicken tenders

By ilariachan87 |

I ate in this place by pure chance intrigued by the location so neat, trendy and clean. As soon as we entered the staff was so kind in welcoming and throughout the duration of the dinner. But the thing that really impresses you is their fried chicken! Really delicious! Recommendation this place 100%❤️

Great food and great service. I would come again and again if I lived here

I chanced upon this excellent soul food restaurant. Server was friendly and attentive. Manager visited to make sure everything was good. I had smothered fried pork chops, coleslaw and homemade mac&cheese. The food was spiced perfectly for my Louisaina tastes. Slaw was zingy and crisp. Perfect. The mac&cheese would be a hometown fav.

The Perfect Soul Food Experience

By TravelerGuideStan |

As a fried chicken lover, I like Fixins 10x more than the former Shaquille's. My family and I decided to eat at the restaurant because we want delicious fried chicken. Of course, we ordered fried chicken, and we ordered fried green tomatoes, a fried chicken sandwich, and cranberry juice. The fried green tomatoes tasted flavorful and savory that I felt that I was in Louisiana trying homemade soul food. The fried chicken sandwich had toppings such as pickles, lettuce, and honey mustard; the combinations create a powerful fried chicken sandwich taste. The cranberry juice was sweet and refreshing with eating the delicious fried foods. In addition, the waiters and servers were interactive and happy since they consistently attain an energy vibe in the restaurant and always check in with customers, including us, to ensure our dining experience is top-notch. Also, I recognize an NBA former player, Kevin Johnson, in Fixins so look out for famous celebrities and sports players entering this restaurant. I recommend fried chicken lovers, southern food lovers, and tourists to give a try on this restaurant.

UMMM UMMM GOOD!!!!!!

This place is right across the street from Where the Lakers play at. I recommend on the weekend tryna set reservations this place can get pretty crowded. Our waiter BEN WAS AMAZING!!!!! He was so patient with my family and I. 5 ppl ordering lots of food. The food was extremely good! The oxtails are to live for! The greens are very good as well! The wings are big and crunchy!!!!!! Everything was great abt this place. From the music they played inside down to the food we ate!!! Visit this place if you are in Los Angeles!

Not the worst but definitely not the best

By Vicereine |

My daughter and I ate here while we waited to check into our hotel. We hadn't eaten since the night before and it was around 2 pm when we arrived. Danielle seated us and was an absolute gem! Very friendly and welcoming. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip, which I would not recommend at all. We were super hungry when everything "should" taste good but that appetizer was so bland. There was no flavor to it, but the chips were good. My daughter ordered a burger with mac and cheese and fries and I ordered the chicken and gravy with mac and cheese and fries. The only thing she liked was her french fries (which REALLY are amazing!). The chicken and gravy and fries were SOOOOOOOOOO good!!!!!! But the mac and cheese was very disappointing. No flavor and very bland. The portion sizes are rather generous, which was nice. The lemonade and orange juice were extremely refreshing though! The bathrooms were clean and smelled nice and the staff was friendly as well.

Southern girl approves

By Vee T |

I stopped by when I was in town at a conference. The restaurant is down the street from the Crypto.com center. I arrived around 11:30a. There was a wait about 15-20 minutes. I waited around 12 minutes. The restaurants is busting with a DJ playing up tempo gospel music but it is loud. The guests speak louder to compensate for this. lOnce seated it was about 5 minutes until a server arrived. I placed my drink order and subsequently food order. The food cane out quickly. Plating was not great. It was hot. The pork chops were fried with brown gravy on top. Not the typical way I’m accustomed to: pork chops simmered in brown gravy until tender. Although fried they were tender and seasoned okay. I got the red beans and rice which were okay, not the best I’ve had. The collard greens were to salty for me with too much acid (vinegar). Of what I ordered, greens were my least favorite.. Honestly as a Southern cook and a Southern girl I was not expecting much. However, it was not bad and this is coming from a Southern girl.
