Daughter wanted to go, soooo...

By anthony s |

It's been a long time since I visited a Flat Top Grill restaurant... most seem to have closed down. We had an enjoyable meal and were in and out pretty quickly. The food was fresh, the beer cold and staff friendly. They were a little busy, but all went off without a problem. We'd definitely go back!

Love Flat Top!

By Jen A |

We were fans of Flat Top when we lived in the Chicago area, so we made it a point to stop by on our visit. As usual, it didn't disappoint. So many veggie and sauce choices that you just can't go wrong. Even the kids were easily able to find plenty of choices for their bowls! Our waiter was extremely pleasant and friendly. His relaxed attitude really added to our overall experience at Flat Top. As for the prices, well, it isn't cheap, but it's not ridiculously expensive. Especially for the great quality and service that you get! Oh, be sure to join the Flat Top e-club before going and get a free appetizer (they send you an email)!

Flat Top Grill

We used to go frequently but management no longer allows the patrons to select meat portion and just doesn't taste as good as it used to

Just what we wanted

By Bob_Tapp |

My wife, grown up son and I ate here tonight. This a standard design your own meal "Mongolian barbecue". We were all happy with our meals, which were reasonably priced. The service was friendly and quick too.

Great experience

By Terry B |

This place is awesome. Such a cool concept which is fairly easy to follow plus your server explains it to you. Basically you build your own meal with the ingredients presented for you to pick. You give your bowl of food to the chef who cooks it on the huge hot plate at the front of the restaurant (which you can watch from the street window). The server then brings your meal. It is great because there are so many possibilities and it tastes amazing! The service is also very fun and friendly.

Unique expereince

Visited flat top grill, Downtown Chicago for dinner. Coming from India , it was a unique dining experience. Would recommend this place to everybody, especially people who think have not tried unique restaurants.

Lots of food options at a good price

By Wyoming_traveler_2 |

Our party enjoyed the food here and there are plenty of choices for every diet imaginable. We had vegetarians, gluten free and regular diets and everyone was happy. It is handicap accessible. The bread was a huge hit. The alcohol options were decent and the prices are reasonable. The wait staff seemed a little scattered, but overall we'd return here again.

A Chance Encounter

By Quasarsoujourner01 |

It was a quiet Sunday in Chicago, while walking on Wabash after dropping by Target Store and CVS. My stomach was telling me to search for a snack. I went by a few cafes and shops, but the FlatTop Grill menu (Mexican) stand attracted me. I read the menu and found the food items were attractive and price reasonable. Then I went in and was promptly directed to the single seats. A server came and explained to me the process. The customer would go to a salad like stand and fill their large bowl. After filling the bowl, along with its specific order (ie: beef, chicken, pork, etc.) whether for wrap, tamales, tacos, quesadilla, etc. I opt for the quesadilla and lemonade drink. Soon the order came quickly. The items in the quesadilla came with cheese, grilled chicken, green onion, etc. along with two types of sauces. It was very tasty! The price came to about $15-17. I would recommend this café to try it out. The FlatTop has a family section in the back, a bar in front , a counter top and a few seats at the front window. The kitchen grill is up front window. This Grill Café is located at 30 S. Wabash, Chicago, Il. 60603. (312-726-8400)

My favorite in chicago

By louiseforget |

You can't go to Chicago without trying this restaurant, it's simple, consider as comfort food but it's more then that. All stir fry food , healthy, fresh, you decide your proteine, fish, poultry, beef pork. You choose your veggie in a bar with the choice of sauce, how spicy or sweet do you like? your choice . Then it is sent to the kitchen that you see, how clean it is, they bring back the food once it,s cook. DELICIOUS!! brought a company partner to try it we end it up going 3 times in a week. The ambiance is nice, the decor is very basic, but I rather have a basic decor with fresh and quality food.

Amazing food

By Robert L |

The food is amazing and very diverse. The food is amazing, hot, and great for the price. The food is also great to heat up later.

My Guilty pleasure when I am in Chicago!

By BluefieldsGyal |

Love, love Flat Top Grill. We first went to this restaurant in Evanston while visiting my cousin at Northwestern. This time around we visited their location on S. Wabash, downtown Chicago! It was just as good as the last time. I love all their sauces, my favorite being the Red Thai Curry sauce just the right amount of spicy. I do think that they could have a little bigger selection of ingredients but over all it is still very good. Try the Mai Tai when you are there. It is delicious.

Delicious and great fun!!!

By Christine G |

We ate here while in town for the Blues Fest. It was so much fun! The food is very fresh and abundant! So many choices! We were barely able to finish our dishes and gorged ourselves in order to do it! Our waiter was fun, friendly, and very helpful. Very reasonable prices. You won't go wrong eating here!!!!

Nice atmosphere. Good food.

By Zackary S |

Nice experience and atmosphere. Friendly staff. Food was pretty good. Lost one star due to meat cut into very tiny sizes.

Chicago trip

Another nice food joint for vegetarians.. Make your own dish.. Cook in front of you.. Good for spicy food lovers..

Really enjoyed this experience

By avrilritchie |

Loved this place. Great choice of food for stir fry and extras. Drink prices very reasonable. Staff were incredibly pleasant and helpful. Would recommend to everyone.

Why aren't these a nationwide chain?

By Ishootforthegram |

My oh my when I tell you my wife and I stumbled into a gold mine! I don't know why this chain isn't much larger! The food is amazing, fresh, hot, fast. You can choose what you want in your stir fry. They recommend putting 3-4 spoons maybe put 4-5 lol. The food is amazing though the bread is to DIE FOR! Thank you Mary M for treating us and helping us out on our first visit!

Lots of ingredients!

By Bizzled |

We stopped by for the lunch (special $9.99 before 4pm). I like that you could select up to 2 meats for your bowl. While the server was nice, took a bit long, but that would be the only draw back. The ingredients were nice and fresh, the ingredient bar was clean and had a great selection. I would recommend getting a slice of their grill top bread (forget the name, you select it with a colored stick when you put your bowl up to cook). Would visit again.

Good but could be better

By K Pastore |

We had never been here before and did not know the concept. It took awhile for our server and he assisted me with my gluten free needs. There are only a couple of sauces that are gluten and/or dairy free. The floor was very sticky and they were cleaning them with bleach while we were eating. Overall, the food was good, but the quality seems low. A decent place for a quick meal.

Fast food... but healthy!

By Hans S |

A bit confusing at first, but you'll understand how it works after a minute. Basically, you choose a protein (beef, chicken, shrimp, etc) to add in your bowl. Then, you take as much veg as you want or can (fill up the bowl to the brim) and give it to the chefs. They'll mix it in with the sauce you choose and the protein. You can make a burrito, a veg wrap, a stir fry, anything you like really. All in all, it's a healthy place and it's not expensive. Could be a bit cleaner to my opinion and service is just ok. Not recommended for business or a romantic dinner, but good for lunch or if you're travelling alone.

Make your own

By jonp468 |

Stopped for supper on the way to the theater. Seated quickly, server explained how to select your items and told us how to get shrimp or scallops. Select rice, fresh veggies (40-50 Varieties) and sauces. Maybe 2 doz Asian sauces. Hand off bowl to cooks, and about 5 mi it’s later, you have your meal. Fresh, tasty food and reasonably priced. Nice choice downtown.

Fun place for dinner

By newengland50 |

Being the first time eating at Flat Top Grill, we asked the wait person for help. She was happy to assist us took us through the full process. She explained how to select extras for our meals. Then, we went to the buffet center and filled up our bowls, Next, we gave our bowls to the chiefs and they added our extras and cook our dinner. Due to our excellent experience, we returned the next dinner with a group of 10.

Just Okay- slow service- healthy choices

By Odessa3 |

My husband & I have eaten at a restaurant just like this - same concept- in Macon GA. Food was better in Macon. Overall choices are good & quality of food was better than average but the service was not good at all. Our rating of average is a gift considering the poor service. We were seated right away on a busy Friday night : but no one brought us water & were then ignored for 15 mins before the server brought us a menu - no water- - - We should have left then -----15 mins later the server took our order. We were unable to order alcoholic drinks due the restaurant lost their liquor license: we saw a notice on door b4 we came in so we did know this coming in. Not a big deal. But then we waited 30 minutes for our food & still did not have a drink OF ANY KIND!!!! Our server finally showed up w/ our non- alcoholic lemon aides - after we had already eaten our appetizers. We had chicken & beef quesadillas- which were really good. There are too many other good restaurants in Chicago to waste your time here - unless it is close to your hotel like it was for us!

Self-serve stir-fry - a new way to go

By Julie G |

The concept is select your own ingredients and they will make stir-fry out of it for you. I suspect if I was way less tired from travel, it might have been fun, but we really didn't want to figure out what to include in our bowls and what color sticks to put in our bowl etc. We wanted a place to sit down, order food and have it brought to us. This felt very self-serve and very confusing.

Healthy, fun, and made to order!

By r82913 |

Definitely include this very fun restaurant on your list for Chicago (it's next door to Vapiano's which is also a must-do!). You will design your own stir-fry. Be sure to fill your bowl to overflowing, order the Roti (really good), add some tofu, and put in more sauce than you think is necessary. Have fun at Flat Top -- once you eat there, you'll want to go back I promise!

Totally customized meals: A great concept that is skillfully executed

By GHartley |

The Flat Top Grill has --what was to us, at least-- a unique concept: meals that are completely customized to the tastes of each patron. First, the server takes your order for protein (beef, chicken, fish, etc. with an up charge for shrimp). The guests are then provided with bowls to fill with selections from a buffet stocked with all kinds of starches, veggies, fruits, toppings, and sauces. Once the bowl is full, it is cooked and served. Options include having the bowl contents served several different ways, including burritos, lettuce wraps, soup, and more. Warm roti bread is included upon request, and was delicious. The price at lunch is 9.95 per person and, at dinner, 12.95. We split the string bean appetizer, which came with a tangy dipping sauce, and we also shared a luscious dessert that featured warm cinnamon/sugared roti bread with French vanilla ice cream and fresh fruit. It was a great meal, reasonably priced, and with warm and friendly service.

Excellent Food with good service

By JainFamilyMan |

This is my favorite eating out location in downtown Chicago. I love the ability to select your own ingredients. They offer several different options. There is a separate cooking place if you have allergy or non meat eater like me. I generally like their Roti taco dish but recently I have been trying the soup which is also amazing. The food is mostly healthy if you ignore the unhealthy ingredients. I like the triple chocolate storm they offer as desert. The food is so heavy that we generally have to take some with us to have space for the yummy desert. Staff is very friendly but during lunch hours you have to wait 10-15 minutes during weekday. This is a place which is not fine dining but also not fast food. It servers good food at very reasonable price of 9.99 for the main course. The lunch for 2 is generally $30 with one drink.

Almost there

By Manuel S |

I stopped in to grab a bite to eat and being a stir fry fan, I decided to check it out. The service needs to improve to speedier service but a nice waiter. The selection is very limited and in need of more choices but has a good vibe to it.

Nice find for custom stir fry

By Jeff B |

The place I planned to eat was packed so I stopped in Flat Top Grill for dinner. I did not know what to expect, but the staff was great in orienting me with the ordering/picking out the ingredients for my custom dish that was excellent. I did not see prices on the menu, but turned out to be reasonably priced (~$14) when I was given the bill. I was tempted to go back again on my short trip to Chicago.

Lunch at Flat Top Grill

By LisaG1062 |

The flat top grill was recommended to us by someone who lives in Chicago and we were not disappointed. We were looking for a rather quick lunch and this place fit the bill. You choose you meat and pick whatever else you want to add and they cook it and bring it to table.

Very fresh & customizable

By SaraBeth55 |

Everything was very fresh & the staff were helpful for us "first timers". Lots of sauces and vegan protein as well. After you choose your ingredients, the grill will make your creation into a burrito, soup, sandwich, tacos, or the more traditional bowl. Lunch prices were very reasonable at about $10.

Delicious stir fry food.

By Mike O |

This was right by out hotel, so we tried it. Great food. You load up a bowl with what you want and they stir fry it for you. Very delicious.

Expensive for the experience

By KaneoheBoy |

This is basically like a Mongolian grill restaurant where you pick a bowl of food, they cook it and return it to you. Yes, you can make it your own and sauce it as you wish but I didn't find the guide to the sauces all that helpful. The bowls in which you pick your food are pretty small compared to some other places I've been. The meal was OK but was kind of surprised to see that for two of us, without alcohol, the meal with tip was $50. Just not worth that much.

Fun and tasty food once you orient yourself

By BobN06 |

Once you figure out the flow it's a great way to create your favorite meal. Much to choose from in terms of meats, accompaniments, sauces and add ons. Suggest that you walk through the buffet of add ons before filling your bowl and check out the add ons at the counter (egg, cheese, etc.) before starting. You can't blame them for a bad meal because you put it together yourself. Definitely a repeat.

Flat top grill

By Sophia F |

It's amazing and they serve great food and deserts they have booths and normal tables they also have chairs that are tall

Fun and very affordable dinner or lunch option

By JH1052 |

This was our first visit to the Flat Top Grill and we enjoyed the food. The concept is nice - you basically chose all the raw food you want and it is then prepared on a big grill for you. Was a bit tricky to mix the ingredients the best way, but the waiters were happy to help. Place gets very busy and noisy, but the experience is nice. Service was very good despite the place being really full. Would definitely go back - but this is for a quick informal dinner - not a place you will stay for hours and chat over dinner.

Fun Mongolian BBQ Type Place

By FreezinginMinnes0ta |

Great make your own stir-fry and lots of awesome sauces including thai, indian, and other flavors. Also, very CLEAN!

Fun concept, ok food

By revlisad |

When you walk in, the bar is on the right and the hostess station is on the left. We were seated and the attentive server explained the process. We headed to pick out the ingredients for each of our custom meals. This is the best part. Oh and don't forget to order the flatbread with a blue stick as you turn in your ingredients. The meals were brought and were ok. Be sure to use green onions rather than yellow onions. They don't cook the ingredients long enough to cook the onions through. Avoid the scallops as well. Tiny and previously frozen.

Mongolian grill - great concept and very allergy friendly

By etvmd05 |

Never heard of style before but love it! It is buffet style for what you want in your meal, you order the protein with the waiter and put a flag in your bowl that says what protein, any allergies, any extras you want like egg, tofu, pita etc. When you have allergies they cook yours in a separate area covered to prevent contamination. They have a book that lists ingredients of the sauces. They have rice noodles for those who cannot do gluten products. Good food! Enjoyable time

Great food and a fun experience

By Eva E |

This was my second time to this chain in Chicago. It is akin to Mongolian BBQ with a few changes. You tell your server your choice of two types of meat and then taking your bowl, you scoop up your desired noodles and veggies. Top it with your choice of sauces and then it gets cooked up fresh for you and brought back to your table. It is hot, fresh and delicious!

Well priced for the size...

By goldilyn |

This place is more like a mongolian grill where you choose meats, vegetables and sauce to put on it and they grill everything together. The lady at the reception was really nice and helpful. If u want a reciept, ask for it, they don't give you one unless you ask. Make sure to be creative in putting things in your bowl, it is quite small and its takes skill to put everything you want. Make sure to put enough sauce as well, mine tasted bland because i had no idea how much too put. My order had some other stuff mixed in with it probably becuase everything is cooked in one big grill side by side. Taste wise, be careful what you choose. They tend to overcook the vegetables so choose the ones that cook longer and choose tasty sauces. Overall, it was ok. Fills you up and not too expensive. But nothing special.

Always a Treat...

By Victor U |

Took my family to the Flat Top on Belmont right before Christmas 2015. As always...the service was stellar, and the food was excellent. I must also do a shout out to Customer Service. I had ordered gift cards, and somehow UPS lost them. Flat Top replaced them for free, and sent them over-night. This is a "must" stop every time I'm in Chicago.

Decent food

By ManuelN |

Food is pretty decent here, the margarita was alright. If you like to eat a lot, their unlimited option is a pretty good deal.

Flat Top Grill should be at the top of your Chicago list

By txrunnermom |

Smelled delicious as we walked in the door. Short wait but would recommend a reservation. The waiter tried to tell us how good the bread was, but we didn’t understand how accurate that was until we tasted it. Order the bread! Lots of options for veggies and sauces. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Good family environment.

Fun team-building location fit the bill

By TravelenJen |

We had a work party of ten from out of town and Flat Top Grill was great. Very patient service and very unique dining experience. Food was as healthy and tasty as you wanted. Fresh fruit roti dessert was delicious. Under $30 bill with drinks.

Simply amazing

By jodiestimpson |

This place is amazing its healthy if you want it to be and still full of flavour nothing missing amazing place , I had the noodles with most of the selection of meat and the peanut dressing simply 100% amazing

Something a little different in Downtown

By Wayne W |

Well, different for us anyway. This place was just up the road from our hotel in S Wabash Ave, Downtown so we gave it a try. It took a little while to understand the process, but the selection and array of fresh meat & vegetables was impressive. Watch your food being prepared in a fast, clean environment. Friendly staff. Not a budget meal, though.

Flat Top Grill

By STV I |

Very convenient eating place, you can pick your ingredients, sauces, proteins, and have a number of choices to have it made, very tasty, the roti bread was great too.

Great dinner at a Great price, and it was fun to created!

By ToniN06 |

We stumbled across Flat Top Grill after a long day of touring around the city. We were hungry and tired, did not feel like waiting any longer to eat. It was great! We really didn't know what we were doing but the staff was there to help! They were great, could not have been more helpful or patient with us. They gave us ideas of what to mix together, encouraged us to add all we wanted to the bowl, even brought more of the delicious bread when we ran out. The food was great, really fresh and if you leave hungry it is your own fault because you can pack a lot into those bowls! The meat just melted in your mouth! If you do not like the meal it is your fault because you created it!

Surprise Find

By CaAnEmMa |

Ran in here by chance with our family while on an overnight connection at O'Hare. Went into town to see Cloud Gate and this place was on our way there. SOO Glad we stopped in, delicious and fun way to eat. Everyone gets exactly what they are craving because you design your meal yourself.

Understaffed?

By meechies |

Water came after food, no refills given. Good was not as expected, one tasted a lil charged. Also we had to get up and get tickets to pay. Benefit of doubt, they may have been under staffed. The staff were friendly. We personally wouldn't go back for a second try.

Disappointed

By Renee G |

My family and I had a wonderful waiter named Jordie whom I have no complaints about, however this place has went downhill!!! The quality of food was shameful. Granite I haven't been here in a few years but never in a million years I would have thought it would be this bad. The menu says steak as one of your choices to add to your meal and my family and I was served chopped beef!!!! If that's the case please change your wording.Last but not least when we first walked in nobody greeted us at all I had to ask if we seat ourselves, very cold and rude!!! Never will I ever return and it's so unfortunate because this place use to be phenomenal.

What a find! Go here you won't be disappointed!

By harris62 |

I was staying at the Palmer House Hotel last month and was looking for nice meal within walking distance and decided to give Flat Top Grill a try. Super friendly staff, cold beer and a wonderful meal. Neat concept in that you fill up a bowl with all kinds of great veggies and then they toss it on the big grill and add meats of your chosing. Kinda like a giant, premium stir fry deal. Much belated kudos to my server Miss Salud, Master Chefs Napoleon and Juan and Brett the Manager. Simply a great meal with a wonderful staff. I'll be back for sure!

Yes It's Great But FYI

By LadyZady |

Everyone agrees that the food is fresh, flavorful, and well cooked! This is true. A few things to be aware of though: * Rice isn't added at the grill, if you want it you've got to add it into your bowl. The rice is at the end of the bar in some lidded containers. * The bar is not easy to navigate if you're short like me, 5'4"! If I want to get items from the second row I have to reach as far as I can to scoop them up and it's hard not to make a mess in the process. Indeed I asked a server to help me get some sauce from the second row as I wasn't confident I could reach it without spilling it everywhere. He looked at me like I was crazy and wasn't particularly enthused but the only other option was for me to go to the other side which wasn't permitted. * They're busy late! We came in for a late dinner on a Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and the place was packed. We got great table service but it took forever for our dishes to be cooked and brought to us. We were getting anxious to eat when they finally brought out the dishes. It was nearly 9:00, they're closing time on Sunday, when we left. All in all, it was excellent just be sure to bring a tall friend or family member with you. If there are a lot of people at the bar then be aware your dish may take awhile and be sure to try one of the fun beverages like Mango Mist (Mango juice and sprite).

My favorite. Never the same. Always delicious

By Ann C |

One of my favorite spots to eat when i come to the city. Always fresh veggies. Always stocked containers and an aray of sauces to change it up. I had a Rumchata with pineapple drink... So good. Went don too quick. My husband liked the lambrusco drink but a lil tart for me. Service is always speedy and fantastic.

Good stir fry

By whitetn |

The food was good during this visit. I enjoyed my meal and got the shrimp and sausage and it was tasty

Flat top fusion

By Joe M |

Leaving the Bean area of Millennium Park my kids and I were in search of sustenance. We walked a block and ran into Flat Top Grill. Having a teenager and a tweener in tow for most might pose a challenge on what to eat; however, I'm blessed with a couple of adventurous spirits and future foodies, so we decided on Flat Top and made our way inside. The restaurant and staff were welcoming and we were educated to the process of ordering and creating our meal. Flat Top provides a Mongolian grill fusion type menu so if you are familiar with Mongolian grill/BBQ establishments then Flat Top will provide a familiar, pick your own ingredients type format with the twist of being able to get your creation rolled into a burrito instead of merely a bowl. The ingredients available for inclusion in your creation also vary from traditional Mongolian grill restaurants allowing you to create your own Mongolian Mexican American fusion meal. On top of a great dinner, I was happy with the price also. Flat Top is a definite recommend for those in the Chicago area looking for a tasty, filling lunch or dinner.

Vegan Friendly and Great Staff

By Yolanda H |

We had an awesome experience. Our server was great. My family frequently visits the location, but this was my first visit. Our server made my visit very good. He was very knowledgeable and made me feel assured that everything I ordered was good. Oh and the food was great! 😃

Great meal before the show

Flat Top Grill - Chicago, Most Memorable Meal

By Badrinathan |

"At Flat Top Grill, we believe each meal should be memorable" - that's what they claim and they deliver what they say. What a fantastic experience this wonderful place. A very creative way to make your own meal. The waiter comes and explain the entire process to you and make you comfortable and suggest various possibilities and hand over a bowl with a little name card, where you write your own name. Then you move around to select your contents of your meal, pick your vegetables (fresh) and (variety of meat for the non vegetarians) and choose sauces from over 15 varieties. You can also taste each of the sauces before you take them. And finally you decide the form your meal will take shape - soup, sandwich, panini, over rice/noodle stir fry, wrap or taco. At the end, leave your selection to the cook, who will cook your food and the cooked meal will come to your desk. It's a whole new & creative way in making your own meal. While your food is getting ready, you have variety of appetisers and a full range bar for you to select. They have very creative boards on their wall including allergy list and the corresponding ingrediants. We picked Noodles with vegetables and the food was very fresh and tasty (you can't complain since you made your own food !). A great place for family and friends and not to miss, if you are visiting Chicago.

Stir fry in Downtown

Good food at superb Chicago downtown with nice mock-tails options. Nice place for larger group (15+) and table reservations was easy and friendly.

What a surprise. You pick what you want stir fried and the protein you want. The waiter help first time visitors. The food was very good. I bit busy and tables are close together, but we found it fun.

yummy

By toothdeb |

Very near our hotel so easy to get to. Fun to create your own bowl. Staff was great and helpful. Place was jumping on a Sunday nite.

New idea & concept

By Rupawala |

In the beginning it was confusing that how it works, but after a while we realize to choose carbohydrates, protein, fats, sauce etc. Accordingly we choose from various selection, which were like farm fresh & put sign for the restrictions like allergic etc Came back to our table & they prepared our dishes on Flat Top Grill & served along with rice, bread etc The prepared dish was awesome, tasty & enjoyable in a very good ambience as well as decoration.

Learn as you go!

By Vinnie G |

This was a tough one to rate because of the unique process. Basically, it's an Asian-leaning stir-fry bar where you load up a bowl with veggies, cooking sauces and seasonings, pick a protein and then dump it off at the grill, where they cook it for you. The issue for me is the learning curve. Invariably, it takes some trial-and-error to get the right balance of spices and food. I'm not accustomed living with that much experimental cooking. The folks were nice, the food seemed fresh, although I must say that the chicken was basically unseasoned, which fits the concept well, but see above.

Better in concept than execution

By Debra C |

The service in this place is oddly hands-off. They didn't do a good job of explaining how the meals worked. If you've ever had Mongolian hot pot, you get the idea -- you pick out your food from sort of a salad bar, piling it all into a bowl, and then you turn it over to the grill chefs to prepare it. OK. Well, some people in our group didn't get how the food would "cook down," and they ended up with tiny portions. I think the menu would have been better if they grouped ingredients in a way that helped you assemble a dish that made sense -- like, Asian-style ingredients in one place, Mediterranean in another? It was all sort of slopped together and it was confusing. Decent food, though, and fresh. The drinks from the bar were poorly prepared and we sent them back twice before giving up.

Awesome fresh food / high quality

By M4uri |

The easiest and fastest way to eat fresh food, enjoy high quality and a very good price for all that. Beef, Veggies, Stew, all of that comes in a high quality. The service is friendly and fast.

First night

By Graham M |

Arrived in Chicago in the afternoon. After settling in we went out for a stroll. Stopped into Flat Top for a quick evening meal. Interesting and quite tasty food. You put it together, they cook it. Service was OK, friendly but somewhat forgetful. Nothing deal breaking but it was OK.

Terrible Service

By p F |

My bowl was never brought to me. So when I canceled it and asked for my check, the manager said she wouldn't charge me for the bowl and didn't apologize for the terrible service. She sounded as though I should be grateful for not being charged for a service I never had. Unbelievable.

You Pick Everything, Except the Meat

By John D |

I've been to similar places in New York and the D.C area, but they have all managed to go out of business. One reason might be because they allowed their customers to pick everything including the meats. This place, you indicate which meat you want, but you don't get to actually pick the meat and place it on your bowl. Probably a good business strategy, as I've seen people try to shove/push/crush enough meat on their plate to feed an entire family. This restaurant is only 1-2 blocks from the Millennium Park area. The service was nice and prompt. The atmosphere was good, and nice drink choices from the bar. The food was okay...I probably didn't pick/include enough veggies and correct sauce flavors...another thing to consider when going to a place like this.

There's a first

By hunslet49 |

Well, there's a first, the waiter shook our hands as we left. I don't know what that was about as I didn't leave that big a tip. It was probably because we are English. We had never tried one of these places before and perhaps we didn't fill our bowls to overflowing like the locals were doing. Never mind, it was an interesting stir fry meal where you choose all the ingredients. Good service, pleasant staff, and a nice atmosphere. I am sure that it is the sort of place that you can keep going to again and again as there are almost infinite variations to what you can eat.

Ok but a bit odd

By Elizabeth B |

I've done Mongolian grill food before & like it. You choose your veggies & sauce & meat then they grill it. This place has a strange twist of options like making your bowl of veggies into soup or a burrito. I liked that you could taste the sauces before putting them on your food. I did not like that the bowl you filled with veggies was small and if you wanted rice they expected you to put it in that tiny bowl. Generally I've seen rice to be available separate from the meat/vegggies that go on the grill. I can't figure out why it took so long for them to grill our food & deliver it to us as it wasn't very crowded. When we did get our food, 2 things bothered me. 1. They serve it in a much larger bowl than the one you were given to fill with veggies--and as the veggies shrink when cooked, you have less volume of food--so why put it in a larger bowl to highlight that? It actually looked ridiculous how little food I had in my big serving bowl. I left hungry. 2. I had veggies in my serving bowl that I did not include in my initial bowl of chose veggies. Same thing happened to my daughter. That means they mixed parts of mine up with other people's. Strange--I've never had that happen at any other Mongolian grill restaurant.

Fun and yummy experience

This place is not just any old Mongolian BBQ. We had a delightful meal and a delightful experience. The roti bread was so yummy that we had to ask for more. The colored sticks to mark your meal are a great idea. Very well thought out. Two thumbs up!

Good if You Know How to Order

By Foster P |

This was an impromptu visit we tried on a weekend night while visiting from out of town. I’ll echo a previous review in that the food was good but, if you hadn’t been there before, the ordering process was very confusing if you didn’t know the drill. Seems oriented to the lunch crowd which does this frequently. Good food with numerous options. Good for school age families. I would have order much differently if I had a better sense of the process.

Decent

By RyanP_KC |

Stir fry bowl made to order with several meat, veggie and sauce options. Reasonable prices, but knowing what the right balance of sauce and meat/veggie options on your first, second, third trip may be tricky. If one would visit regularly I can see the appeal. Friendly staff and unique experience.

Stir fried noodles, meat, and vegetables, similar to Genghis Grill

By statmango |

It was a good thing we went early in the evening (about 6 PM). By 7:30 PM, there were lines out the door. The food was good, and you could get a large portion without spending a lot of money. The idea is that you choose noodles, meat, vegetables, and sauce, and they stir fry the mixture for you. Unlike some similar restaurants, there were no recipe suggestions, so it's too easy to make a mixture you don't like. It would be nice to have recipe cards for some common sauces. Also, there were not enough waiters for the number of customers. We probably spent an extra 30 minutes there waiting for the check and refills on drinks.

Disappointing

By Pdesai03151960 |

Went there last night for dinner. Great concept. Not very clean. They have a special colored stick for people with allergies and vegetarians. I chose my rice noodles with vegetables and sauces to be stir fried. When my noodle bowl came to my table, first of all it did not smell very appetizing. Then there were other ingredients that I did not add in there like egg. Don’t know what else could have been in there. I do understand when we decide to eat out it is not going to be very hygienic and cross food contamination can happen. But when u are paying for a service they should try to accommodate you. Guess I will not go back there.

Great "Create Your Own" Exerience

By Evan Beals |

Have visited restaurants like this back in Boston and loved them... first time I've seen one in Chicago. Great selection of stir-fry additions and sauces. Cocktails are great - try the one with Rumchata (I forget the name). Oh yeah... and most of the staff is verrrry easy on the eyes! Great experience with friends, might not be as fitting for a solo experience.

Flat Top Grill - Chicago

By carolyn2003 |

Had the opportunity to experience the Flat Top Grill last week. What a treat! Went with family and friends. The set up is similar to a Mongolian Grill experience where you pick your vegetables, meat (chicken, pork, beef, fish), and sauces (15) to be cooked and then delivered to your table. But these guys have gone to the creative extreme. Not only are you choosing the contents of your dinner, you are also choosing the form it takes - soup, sandwich, Panini, over rice/noodle stir fry, wrap, or taco. The staff and atmosphere encourage your creative side and make this a fun experience. You also can get bread with your meal if desired. To help you a little, they have menu suggestions of recipes that list the ingredients and the sauces used to get the concoction. There's also an assortment of appetizers and desserts to round out your meal. And a full range bar with beers, wines, mixed drinks, etc. This is a fun place for the family, your friends, your co-workers. We particularly enjoyed the creativity to make your own meal with such differential flair! The food tasted fresh and really good. I had a mix of veggies, chicken, egg noodles, brown rice, and lots of kung pao sauce. Over the top delicious! The place is popular with the locals, so if you're any where close to Millenium Park, put this restaurant on your list of places to go and get there by 6p to avoid waiting.

This is our go-to restaurant in Downtown Chicago

By Lynda G |

Delicious fresh food, very little waiting, good service, reasonable prices. These are the reasons we come back to Flat Top Grill over and over again.

Almost as good as I remember

By Emjai1920 |

I used to visit Flat Top Grill when I live closer to the area but had not eaten their in years. Set up is still the same except you have to choose your meat from the menu rather than from the bar and some meats like shrimp are extra. Option to have your bowl made in a soup, wrap or with roti - which is my all time favorite. You can have one bowl or pay extra for unlimited trips to the bar which has tons of veggies, noodles, brown or while rice, tofu and other vegetarian friendly meat substitutes. Very friendly for those with allergies and that need gluten free.

OK Mongolian BBQ

By bryan_513 |

Have visited Flat Top two times during visits to Chicago and wasn't blown away either time (wasn't disappointed either). Create your own bowl allows for all tastes and audiences. Service was so-so - inside is small so wait times can be long. Try to make a reservation if you can.

Amzing food. Vegetarian friendly.

By Amit R |

Amazing food. We were looking for Mongolian style stir fry place in Chicago and found this place with very high rating on TripAdvisor. It definitely lived up to expectations and actually better than what I expected. Highly recommended. Vegeterian and gluten free friendly place. Do try the roti pratha option (blue stick). Absolutely loved it.

An Absolute Must!

By ssmith620 |

Everytime I come to Chicago, I must have dinner at Flat Top. The atmosphere is so fun, and the food is fresh and delicious. It's fun to make a bowl of these amazing ingredients then watch it be cooked up on the grill. There are these fun sticks you can choose to have put in the bowl that add different things. You can, for example, have them make your ingredients into a spring roll if you include the (certain color) stick.

Great if you love personalized food!

By monicapickett0327 |

We (3 of us) went to this place one night and really enjoyed it. If you don't know what it is, basically it's a place where you pick your veggies in a bowl and give to the chefs which add your meat of choice and make it into tacos, a burrito, a bowl, a salad, or lettuce wraps. We all got pretty different things- I got chicken lettuce wraps with all sorts of veggies. My brother got tofu. There are a bunch of different sauces to add to your bowl before they cook it. If you like to pick out your own stuff, then I would try this place. It's cheaper if you go for lunch. They also have a bar which looked like they made some tasty drinks.

A little confusing with a lot of choices

By Lindsey W |

Let me start by saying this place has wonderful food and the wait staff was great. But the entire ordering process and what you were receiving was a little confusing. There was so many choices of what to put in your food I felt my ADD kick in and my bowl turned into a giant hodgepodge of ingredients. Granite it tasted great and my 8 year old son it was his new favorite place to eat so no worries we will be back and ready to take on this dining experience again!

Flat Top Grill - This concept works other places, so why not here????

By MJandDC |

Flat Top Grill was near my hotel a while back, so I stopped by to give it a try. I like that you can choose your protein and then just fill your bowl with the veggies and sauces that you like and then they grill it up and bring it to your table. (You should always get what you want in your stir fry that way...) In the instance of Flat Top, things were just not clicking on my visit (hopefully this is only the reflection of having a bad night and not how things run here regularly). I ordered chicken as my protein and then proceeded to load up on broccoli, peppers, garlic, teriyaki sauce, etc. until my bowl was full. I handed everything off to the chef and went back to my seat with a number where could deliver my completed entrée. My food did finally make it to me after about 20 minutes (seems like a long time to wait when it was a huge flat top grill and I saw him pour everything out while I was at the counter)! The sauces were bland, some items were nearly scorched, while others did not taste grilled in the least, and there were few bits of chicken in the dish at all. Since my past experiences at similar restaurants have all been better than this, I hope that this was an outlier. It was bad enough, however, that I cannot recommend it.

Change is not always good

By JTheiler |

I loved this restaurant chain, ever since the first time I visited. Over the years, I have always made a point to take people, especially family from small towns, because it's a unique experience. Since last visiting. It has changed so much, it's not even the same concept. To a veteran of the chain, the changes blatantly reflect cost-saving measures. Where to start? It would take too long to name all the ways it's changed. Main disappointments: You don't choose/serve your own meat (protein), you tell them what you want and you have a limit of how many you can choose. The sauces are in sloppy pitchers, so the old concept of ladling the sauces, (and the menu that suggested "recipes") is gone. The shrimp skewer is gone. You can get shrimp, but it's going to be in your meal. That doesn't even make sense. It's a skewer. They don't cost that much. (And the wall menu still says "shrimp skewers".You get charged $4.00 if you go back for a second visit. The flat bread is half the size it used to be. The differences added up to a disappointing experience. The cost-cutting measures make a statement. Not a positive one, either.I'd rather have paid more for the historically consistent quality experience of days gone by. If you've never been to Flat Top Grill, you won't know any better. If you've been there pre-cost-cutting era, you'll notice the changes.

New experience of having favourite ingredients in your dish.

By Pramod53 |

It was a unique experience we had. Concept is that you take a bowl, fill it with veggies, noodle, sauces etc of you choice (like buffet). Then we have to put colour sticks indicating for further addition of chicken, egg, protein etc. Bowl is then handed over to staff for further cooking to staff. They put it on a big hot plate & add items of your choice you have indicated by way of colour sticks. There is also option of roti, meat & tofu. Finally they serve you hot food which really taste delicious. Yes there was a big board in the restaurant for your guidance about items which can be avoided if you have allergy of egg or protein. The price is reasonable & value it.

Stir fry

By Melody K |

We have lots of these restaurants in San Diego. It's more fun there because they have huge circular grills and you can watch them work. Fun. In these type of restaurants you can guarantee the food is fresh. These are my recommendations. 1. Chicken is almost always dry. Combine it with another meat, or skip it altogether. 2. Fill your bowl higher than you think. It will cook down. 3. Add four or more ladles of liquid. It cooks down and you are going to want the moisture. Other than that enjoy. We liked this place and almost went back a 2nd night

Lots of variety, not lots of taste

By Faizan M |

We went there at night for dinner. Basically you choose your meat but then put the many different types of veggies in your bowl, add in the sauces and then let the cooks stir fry it. A novel idea, but the taste solely depends on how you design your dish yourself... Considering that your responsible for your own food, they should charge the same way. I wouldn't go there again.

We went back twice!

By J G |

Very fun to get your own meal prepared for you. We liked the edamame and spicy green bean appetizers too. We actually went twice in three days!

One of my FAVS!

By Ryan O |

Not much more to say, every experience at this location has always been phenomenal, would like to say it exceeds expectation but it's pretty hard to say when each visit is great. Date, family, catchup, no matter the occasion it's a great place with great food! 5/5

Great fun

By MMG-C |

This is a great way to eat, you choose the veg, protein and sauces and someone else cooks it! The choices are great, lovely and fresh. The staff are very obliging, the service is quick, the style is quirky and loud. It was a lot of fun & very yum. Have recommended it to many travellers heading to Chicago.

Pretty good

By Carrie B |

I did enjoy my meal here. It was very good, and I liked that I could make my own stir fry. The process is pretty easy once they walk you through everything. Service was good. My only complaint would be that it was a little dirty in the restaurant for my tastes. The bathroom was pretty bad, but the place needs a good scrubbing.

OMG!! I re-visited on the same trip

By A O |

Food is a necessity to survive, whether you are at home or on vacation. When you are on vacation its nice to make food apart of the adventure. Try something new. The day we landed I was starving. Hangry (hungry and angry) to be more precise. Iphone maps decided to walk us around in loops. We walked pass Flat Top twice trying to find another destination. Let's just go here, my stomach said, while my brain concurred. Well that became the spot for the trip. I do not re-visit the same restaurants in the same trip while on vacation and I DO NOT DO LEFT OVERS...EVER!!! I did both!! Oh, I don't do buffets either. This place made me set aside all my angst. The waiters are quipped to walk you through the process because it is a process. Take any suggestions they give because they know their cuisine. When I said buffet, I met in a loose term. You pick out your food and then it is cooked on a "Flat Top" grill. The experience is worth the venture. If you make it to dessert, the cinnamon roti is tasty. As a matter of fact doggie bag, just to get dessert. Food taste great warmed up the next day

Good choice and value

By Angela |

This is like a Mongolian BBQ. What I like is that you fill your bowl and then put a "nametag" stick in it and leave at the grill. They bring to you, so you don't have to stand and wait for it. Also, their roti tacos are DELICIOUS!!! In my opinion, they made the meal. We had to wait much longer than they thought it would be, so manager kept coming to check on us and then offered us free app. and apologies, which we appreciated. App we chose was thai green beans. Waay too spicy. Don't recomend. Our food was delicious, though, and plentiful. About $15 each for dinner and $10 for lunch. Our waiter was wonderful Even though the poor man had worked his earlier job at a pizza place and almost 8 hrs. at Flat top, he was pleasant and attentive. Terrific! The one thing I thought was silly was charging $3 extra for shrimp as a protein. That's not necessary at all at already $15/plate. Regardless, we would return.

So much food!

By kaite3 |

During our first trip to Chicago we decided to try out a new place to eat that we don't have at home. We tried out this place and were pleasantly surprised. The staff was very friendly and helped us get a combo of food that tasted great!

Novelty for Chicago

By Salman |

This is probably a new concept in Chicago but well established elsewhere, particularly in my neck of the woods i.e. the UK. However more in terms of choice for the main course. Limited choices for starters and desserts. Good service. I personally wouldn't go again but purely be ause this type of food has no interest for us and we would much rather try food we cannot get in the UK L

Great place for build your own Asian

By Dave A |

We went to Flat Top Grill without knowing much abour it and had a great experience. Our server patiently helped us (two adults and four children ages 8-12) through their unique ordering process. The food was everything we hoped it would be. They have so many choices of fresh ingredients and sauces. Even my wife, who is gluten intolerant had a wide variety to select from. I highly recommend the Flat Top Grill.

Refreshingly Brilliant!

By Sudhir C |

This place is a must try. Was intrigued by the prospect of having to 'build' my own meal. It was fun. Gets your creative juices flowing as you thing what ingredients you must mix and how it would turn out in the end. Now if the dish is good that's because the cooks did a good job and if it doesn't come out so well..... You have none to blame.... Hey, who chose the ingredients... Mine came out yum, the cooks did a great job. Excellent ambience too. Guys, don't miss this one.

A Better Mongolian BBQ

By Amber K |

This is set up as a "make your own" stir fry. It is very fair priced for an expensive city, and very charming.

Excellent Casual & Good Value Food

By Janet M |

Stopped along the way to the theatre to see Hamilton. Fast and friendly service. You make your own dish. The food and options were plentiful! Hit the spot and very inexpensive!

Great spot for lunch on a workday.

By Brooke M |

Yummy food, quick service, hip central hotplate where they cook your stirfry, which will be made of ingredients you selected. I'll be back.

Excellent food and waitstaff

By deconwa |

My wife and I stopped at the Flat Top Grill for dinner. The waitstaff were helpful in assisting us to choose the items we wanted to cook and the hot sauces to include. Their assistance helped us to have a very delicious meal. If you have been to the Mongolian HuHut franchise restaurant, this place is very similar, with a similarly delicious menu.

Choose your what you want

By thelmaab |

You first select what protein you want such as chicken, beef, eggs, fish, etc... For those of you who want to pile it on, this is the place to go. You get to choose your entire ingredient starting with brown or white rice or noodles and from an array of fresh vegetables, as much as you can fit in the bowl. Then you add your sauce. The servers will help you mix the sauces depending on your taste. Good food at a reasonable price.

Just as good as I remembered from a decade ago!

By Raganreview |

I used to live in Chicago 10 years ago. Last month, I returned for a business trip and decided to hit up some of my old favorite dinner spots. I made it to Flat Tops on my way to the airport, and it was exactly how I remembered it. If you have never tried a "do-it-yourself" stir fry place with VERY fresh ingredients, you need to try this place. As I wheeled in with my big suitcase, they set me up in a perfect little table by the window. A few of the ordering procedures have changed, but it's still the same great food! The possibilities are endless, but I always make mine into a soup- yummmm. It's perfect with the flat bread- I cannot get enough of the bread! My only advice would be to use at least three or four ladles of sauce if you are going with the soup. The service was also exceptional. I wish I remembered my server's name because he had a huge personality. Please open a restaurant out west.

Dinner with a Difference

By afforsyth |

Today was a day of sightseeing and shopping and we fancied something a bit different for dinner. We decided on the Flat Top Grill at 30 S. Wabash. This is a restaurant where you pick what meats/proteins (up to 3) you would like, you then go to the vegetable, noodle, rice and sauce station and pick as much as you like, place your selection in a bowl, take your bowl to the cooking station where the cooks will add the meats/proteins you have selected and cook it all together - one of the waiting team will then bring your cooked food to your table. Tonight we had Norita helping us and she was fantastic. Norita guided us through the whole process and sorted us out with drinks - including a pretty large cocktail selection - from which we selected the Jim Beam Party Punch, and also a nice Avalon Cabernet red wine. Before going for the main event of the evening, we decided to try a couple of the appetisers - Chicken Potstickers and the Spicy Green Beans. The Chicken Potstickers are like Chinese dumplings and are served with Sweet Chilli Sauce on the side. The Spicy Green Beans should only be ordered if you are into very hot dishes - I enjoy hot chilli dishes but struggled a bit with this one - it was bit too hot for me… We went for the main event, picked our proteins and then selected all of our veggies, noodles and rice. You can stand and watch the team cook your food or you can go back to your table and it will be brought to you - there’s a few table where you can sit and watch the cooking also. Norita brought over our cooked food and it was delicious - none of it was left over! We both enjoyed out experience at the Flat Top Grill, and would be happy to come back again.

Was Close to Palmer House

By vetofunk |

We chose this place because it was close to the Palmer House and open late on a Sunday night. Good food. Nothing totally special about it. Two meals and two drinks were about $35. Many places to choose that are more authentic and local, but if you are in a pinch this place has good food.

Good food!

By Allygator1016 |

Shared the trios appetizer with my coworker and it was a more than enough for two if you're hungry but not starving. Had $5 margaritas which were also really good. It sure if this is a good place for kids, better for couples or work trip for the evening.

All Hail Flat Top Grill!

By expat_mbk |

I love this place so much! Make sure you get the roti (the bread thing - it's free!). For vegetarians, it doesn't get any better!

Everything was great!

By mt_kimmie |

We were quickly greeted and seated. Our waiter asked if we’d been before. When we said we hadn’t, he took us through the buffet and explained how it all worked. The food was fresh and colorful and there was a wide variety to choose from. Our waiter was very attentive. The location was perfect - just half a block from our hotel at The Palmer House and about 1 and 1/2 blocks from the CIBC Theatre where we saw Hamilton. I’d highly recommend this restaurant.

Unbelievable tekkers!

By marshallstj |

We mistakenly entered this restaurant assuming it would satisfy our craving for ribs/wings etc. However, what was actually inside was phenomenal! Pick your own meat, veg, carbs and sauce and let the chefs do the rest. You can pick extras such as wraps to go with it. The portion sizes are huge and unbeknown to us at the time it's also eat all you can! Highly recommended!

Birthday Lunch

By mswtravels71 |

My colleagues took me here for my birthday, since we all have different dietary needs. As a vegetarian, I really appreciated the fact that I could incorporate different types of meat substitutes into my bowl. Their color sticks are also helpful - letting the chefs know to cook my bowl away from meat-eaters' etc. Good for a group especially ones that have diverse needs. A small annoyance, I did mention it was my birthday at the hostess stand. She said "happy birthday" which of course I appreciated. Perhaps a comp dessert or other way of thanking me for choosing their restaurant with my group would have been nice?

Novel idea- create your own

By Kimberly K |

Loved this place- for me, a novel concept, create your own stir fry! Service was excellent- promptly seated, coat hooks for convenience, easy to follow instructions & attentive server for any of our questions or needs. Choose your protein- fill your bowl as high as you like with a nice selection of veggies, noodles, rice & sauces. Once happy with your bowl full of healthy goodness, drop it by the flat top grill counter to be stir fried on a massive flat top grill, with your aforementioned protein. Within minutes, your dish is served back to you, cooked to perfection & piping hot. Make sure to try the roti- a light, buttery type of bread, a lovely accompaniment. Price was very fair, service great & food very good!

Our favorite place!

By marisameeks |

One of our favorite places in Chicago! Great price and lots of food. You can enjoy all types of flavors and preparations. All cooked right before you.

Mongolian BBQ it isn't!

By DramaQueen55 |

We were staying at the Palmer House just round the corner and a previous review mentioned this restaurant so we decided to go for it. We were impressed by the service from start to finish; our server explained the procedure really clearly and brought our drinks promptly. But we were thinking it would be like the Mongolian BBQ in London used to be - and it really isn't. You decide in advance what sort of meat you want, and you're given a bowl to fill with rice or noodles (I suppose you could have both) and vegetables etc. then you add your sauce, and leave the bowl on the grill. You don't get to watch the food being cooked - and you don't get a second chance if you feel you picked the wrong sauce! (At the UK Mongolian BBQ you filled the whole bowl yourself, including meat, and it was an "eat as much as you like" buffet.) Having said that, the food was well cooked and tasty, so as long as you don't go with any pre-conceptions you'll have a good evening.

Yearly visit

By HPangel |

This place is nice for a meal in Chicago. I hit once a year when staying at the Palmer House. I enjoy it very much. Customer service is hit or miss but I like the food and the style of the place.

By Richard J |

Great place to take a lunch break from touring Chicago or shopping. Service is great and a good variety of choices to make your own lunch. Sauces are varied so you can suit your own desires. Prep is quick once you turn in in to be cooked. Recommended.

We loved it!

By Mary C |

We thought we'd try something new, so we visited Flat Top Grill during a day in downtown Chicago. We were there around 3:00 pm, so lunch prices were still in effect, making our meal a great value. Never having been to Flat Top before, our waiter walked us over to the vegetable and sauce bar and showed us how it all worked. After selecting rice or noodles, lots of great veggies (and fruit), and sampling a few of the sauces before choosing, we were treated to a delicious meal. We were amazed at the amount of meat that was added. One had chicken and the other had beef and both were very good. We will definitely visit Flat Top Grill again.

Great Food

By JeffandCarolyn |

You pick all of the goodies and they add the meats and then cook it on a huge flat top. Great place, a little different then our last trip to the Champaign one. Here they give you the meat portion.

The food is really good. Its an interesting concept. You get MANY vegetable choices in your bowl. Easy to eat at with a group. Everyone can get what they want with no real fuss. Lunch/Happy hour pricing is the best deal. They also offer a student discount.

Stop in

We popped in here after being disappointed at another restaurant we tried to eat at and were seated quickly. Staff was super friendly and we ordered potstickers and Mongolian beef skewers. So delicious and flavorful! The server brought us a flat bread that they make and it was amazing!! Would definitely come back here when in the area!

Interesting food

By Faye V |

This is a pick your food and sauce and they cook it for you. Quite tasty. However choosing the sauce you like best is a bit of a challenge. Wine was very inexpensive and not bad. Appetizers were great. We had green beans edamame and pot stickers. All good

My and my boyfriend was supposed to go here with his brother and his girlfriend for his birthday, they reneged so we decided to go because they said it was so go long story short 👎🏾😒 it was like hibachi with out the buffet The waiter sat us at a table started us off with drinks and an appetizer , from there we picked out our noodles meat and vegetables in a big blow then took it to the grill where they cooked it and brought it back to the table (No taste at all)we could have just saved gas on the 30min ride and went to ⭐️hibachi ⭐️or ⭐️hamada of Japan ⭐️ way better taste/seasoning over all the staff was nice 👍🏾 and the mixed Margarita I had was wonderful 😋

Good food, good experience.

By B R |

Was an interesting experience. The food was good and the experience was very interesting. If you get the stir fry bowl, you get to pick all the ingredients you want and then they cook it for you. Good selection of both ingredients and sauces.

Late Night Snack

By Q5840JGmichaelf |

We were not looking to spend a lot or eat a lot when we happened upon Flat Top Grill. The appetizers were excellant and the food well presented. I would go again without question.

Remains one of my favorite places to eat in Chicago.

By Richard J |

Good Mongolian BBQ and price is right. Plenty of options available and some great sauces. Create exactly what you want to eat and leave the cooking to them.

Fun and fresh

By Ric |

We were looking for just a place to eat late and have flat top a try. Our waiter Kenneth was outstanding. We told him this was our first time and he really guided us through the process of filling our bowl. They have so many ingredients to put in your bowl and he extras are great. The only thing that was poor was the beef. I thought it would be strips but it was ground and not very fresh tasting. Everything else was top notch. Also loved they had far tire beer on tap.

You will not leave hungry

By JennDub17 |

This is a fix your own meal. I loved being able to pile up my veggies. There were a lot of sauce options and I just started mixing. I wish I would have tasted some before doing this. But that was my own fault. This place also offers a police, fire, and military discount, which I really liked. I would eat this again in a heart beat.

Depressingly Good

By Pioneer41009 |

I was looking for a tasty lunch and did find it. The dark colors and the lighting is very depressing almost like a dingy backroom. My waitress Samantha G was very cordial and knowledgeable. Service was quick. Pricing was fine for a lunch. food was very flavorful! It seemed to be clean!

Liked Brighton Kitchen Better, good location interesting interior, close to State Street, easy in and out,

Disorganized and low quality

By Amanda T |

We tried this place because it is close to our hotel. We were disappointed. We let the waiter know it was our first time and he spent about 15 seconds "explaining" what to do. We missed out on a bunch of seasoning options because he didn't mention that whole area and people were standing around it when we picked our food. We watched the guys throwing the food on the grill and it looked like everything was just getting mixed up and sure enough when I got mine there were several things in there I did not select. My husband's was about 50% burnt. And their meat was really low quality, we will not be going back.

Yum-azing food; great service!

By diprajha |

Had a delightful first experience at Flat Top Grill. The ordering process is similar to a mongolian grill restaurant but in a much upscale environment. I chose shrimp as my protein and all asked for eggs and Indian paratha bread to be inlcuded with my meal. Food was fresh and tasty and the attentive service made our lunch experinece even more enjoyable!

I have never been to a restaurant like this but I was pleased. You go in, let the waiter know what type of meat you would like, go to the buffet, load everything you want into the bowl and then drop it off at the grill when finished they bring your bowl to your table. It was good. My family and I had different varieties in our bowls but no one was disappointed. We left full. We had chicken potstickers for an appetizer and it was AMAZING.

Quick and delicious lunch!

My friend and I were in town for a convention and decided to make a quick stop by Flat Top. It was to die for! Our server was wonderful, and there were so many delicious options. We contemplated coming back for lunch the next day it was that good!

Flat Top Grill

Always one of my favorite places to go . Remember to go heavy on the sauce and get a piece of the roti bread with your stir fry. No matter your diet needs the make your own bar has lots of options .

Tasty

we gave this a try first time. But once you get to grips with the ordering system it is very tasty food and unusual. Enjoyed this one.

A Tasty lunch!

Hubby and I shared a few appetizers and it was perfect! Very tasty, with fresh ingredients. Would definitely recommend this place.

Worst food I have ever ATTEMPTED to eat

Build-your-own bowl - they are really serious about it and the choices are great

By JerseyJean |

Enjoyed an abundant lunch for a reasonable price just a few blocks from the Art Institute. You can build your bowl with noodles, rice of different types, even a quinoa base, then lots of vegetables, tofu and seitan options, a zillion flavorful sauces, plus a variety of fish and meat choices, and then can customize for everything from Indian bread to egg to "don't cook this anywhere near meat or allergens..." The wait staff was pleasant and the food delicious. Great meal. Want to go back soon!

Enjoyable!

Stumbled into this eatery on a short stop over in Chicago, on our way to see the "bean" in Millenium Park. It was a cold night and we just deplaned from flight from Belize...severely under dressed. Flat Top felt like a perfect shelter with warm and friendly staff, good food. Food is an interesting concept of "make your own stir fry/soup". Mine was a delish mix of Vietnamese and Thai sauces within peanut bits, fresh veggies, chicken and scallops, noodles and quinoa. Very yummy and reasonably priced. Great eatery!!!

Very complicated experience if you come here for the first time

By Annaline |

Very complicated experience if you come here for the first time. They give you a stick on which you have to put your name. Than they give you a paragon on which it says if you want meat or not and what kind. Also they will give you a small bowl to fill it up with veggies and other things from the bar. Be smart: pack in there as much as you can. Than you will need to pick additional color sticks to let the cook know how you want him to cook it. They you will give all your selection to cook. And than you wait...... and I have no idea why but it is a long wait !!!! Too long for me....that is why I don't give 5 stars. And another thing: I didn't fill up my bowl and than later when my food cane in s different larger bowl it looked like I didn't order much ( and I didn't ) and I was still hungry when I left this place . So although food at the end was good I can't give more than 3 stars for overall experience.

Great concept!

I'm a big fan of salad bars, and for example the Whole Foods food bars. No big surprise I loved this place aswell. You get to pick the ingredients yourself - and even spice them! Everything looked fresh, and my first piece turned out nicely aswell. The price wasn't bad at all either, and staff was very friendly in giving tips what I might want to try. Wish we had one in Finland..

Okay concept, service, and food

By Belinda G |

I thought this was an interesting restaurant concept. However, I feel this do-it-yourself buffet grill fell short with its new concept. You (the consumer) first tell a waiter what kind of meat you want. Then they write on a stick. Then you write your name on the stick ...then you get to pick your buffet of veggies noodles/rice/ quinoa and sauce. Then you leave your bowl to be stir fried whereby you can choose more stuff (i.e. tofu... etc). You put colored pins in your bowl. Your food is then prepared and served at your table by the waiter. Seems like a lot of effort for a meal. The food was “okay,” but did not leave my mouth watering for more, or even wanting to come back again. There was nothing that was above and beyond — an okay meal, confusing experience, okay service, decent prices, neat decor for me.

Good food!

By Drew R |

This was our first visit to the flat top grill, and it was pretty good. Different from the usual Mongolian barbeque in that you choose your proteins (3) with the server, who then notes them on a receipt, and then you pile veggies, noodles, rice, sauces, and spices into your bowl, add your protein receipt (stuck on a wooden stick in the bowl), and then you drop it on a counter for cooking. Again, the food was pretty good. The meat choices are beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, calamari, and Filipino sausage. One down side is that it you want more, they charge you four bucks for another bowl. But it was a nice atmosphere, the drinks were good, and the service was good. I'll go back again.

Gluten free options

I was excited to find a food place with gf options that wasn't super expensive. Friendly waitstaff here as well

Upscale Mongolian BBQ Style Restaurant

By TravelingIsMyFun |

This restaurant was a pleasant suprise. It is located just 1/2 block from the Palmer House Hilton Hotel. If you are familiar with Mongolian BBQ, this place is top of the line. The build-your-own selection of veggies and protein is excellent. Lots of choices for sauces too. Be sure to get the roti bread too. You will not leave hungry.

Build it yourself!

By Jussi T |

Flat Top offers a 'build it yourself stir fry' concept whereby you can create your own bowl by hand picking the ingredients and add chicken/fish/shrimps/other protein of you wish. They will then fry it. High quality food and reasonable price. Excellent choice for lunch!

A really fun experience with delicious food

By lucyosborn |

This could end up being a favorite restaurant of mine. You are able to create your own meal. The food is what I would call "Asian fusion", a combination of different Asian cuisines that you can mix and match to your own taste. The appetizers were excellent. We had asian quesadillas, chicken potstickers, and fresh grilled beans. The beans had a very hot red pepper on it, so if you aren't ready for spicy, skip that one. Then choose your protein, vegetables, rice, noodles, spices, and sauces. Be sure to add plenty of the sauces you choose. And don't forget to get a piece of the roti bread. All of this for a reasonable price!

Ok food, interesting experience

First timer at self-serve; pick-your- own-ingredients stir fry grill. Interesting concept, food ok, service slow but acceptable. Good out quick for hungry guests eating a late afternoon lunch after walking about museums. Question whether $5 margarita had any tequila😳.

If you don't like your meal its your own d*mn fault!

By jayelkay62 |

The concept is not new - you create your own stir fry masterpiece - proteins, veggies, rice and/or noodles, sauces, etc. They flat top it and it's served sizzling hot. The ingredients were fresh, varied and delicious. It's up to you to come up with the killer combination. I was served by Manny tonight and he was super attentive and helpful. Great customer service. The guys on the grill were executing beautifully. Meats were cooked through but not tough, veggies were crisp tender, and the roti was heavenly. Great meal. Great price.

Excellent Food and Service

By travelnews4U |

Flat Top Grill is a great place to create your own stir fry. Numerous veggie and protein choices. Customize your dish in several ways. If you have never been there, ask your server about the options. Reasonable prices, especially at lunch. We will definitely visit again!

Fun idea...great for family

By Julie H |

Fun idea...fill your bowl as much as you can before it goes to the grill. It will shrink. Very healthy meal and good variety since everyone picks their own ingredients.

Interesting Place

By Becky V |

Unique, it takes more than one visit to function in this restaurant. You choose what you want in your stir fry. That is easy, but choosing the right sauce too cook it in is a little tricky. The price is really good and the food is fresh.

Fabulous service, great food

By Tricarly30 |

My family had dinner here last night. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating-they even ran across the street to grab chocolate sauce to make my boys chocolate milk! Now onto the food-great size portions with tons of fresh veggie options and great sauces. You really get to create a meal that is specific to your tastes. Another plus is they are allergy friendly, if you have an allergy concern, they cook your meal in a separate wok. I highly recommend this restaurant for a fast, fresh meal, with great service!

Top notch

By Walkabou |

Great idea. We had a fun time creating our own meals. We had both lunch and dinner on separate occasions. Hassle free and tasty.

Nice concept, average food

By Moisandor |

The concept is easy, you order your proteins and drinks at the table. With the receipt you go to the ingredients counter and fill up your bowl. You can select white rice or brown rice, vegetables and sauces and hand it to the guy behind the grill. After some time the food is delivered. Can't get any more simple. I wasn't overwhelmed with the flavors but for a quick bite and good price it's not bad.

Great for Healthy Food Options.

By Tzeigler |

Great place to work, and good place to eat. Has so many ways to customize your stir fry. It doesn't matter if you are vegan, vegetarian or neither, their's something for everyone. You can turn your bowl into a wrap or soup, and if you have allergies they'll make your food separate. The service is good and I'd love to visit again.

A delicious evening.

By Kunal Roy |

They serve roti as well as rice. That's heaven when you're travelling abroad! Also, its unlimited food with a variety of over 12 sauces and over 8 types of non vegetarian options. Do visit. One of the best at Wabash!

Vegetarian served meat unknowingly- Disgusted

By Jim M |

Informed waiter I was vegetarian but still ended up with meat in my stir fry. Manager informed me I should have been given a 'white stick ' to let the chef know food should have been cooked separately. When I asked the waiter if he was aware of the white stick he said he did but didn't think it would be such a 'big deal'. Appalling attitude. He even tried to charge me for the meal! I have not eaten meat in 20 years.

Fun and filling

By ConstantTraveller77 |

This Asian concept cafe - choose your meat and vegetables etc and then have then stir fried for you on a flat top grill - is great value and good fun.

At ever visit....at least once!!

By Aud E |

This place is great. Mongolian style grill. Best part-your bowl gets delivered to you! Also, your protein doesn't go in before cooking so extra room for veggies!!

Unique and Inter

By Carl S |

So I was looking for a quick healthy meal and stumbled into the Flattop Grill. Pretty neat concept. You pick your meat and then a bowl of add ons of your choosing. I had chicken with lots of veggies. All pretty healthy. It fell apart at the end when you have to pick a couple of sauces to cook it in so not knowing how many hidden carbs was an issue. I had double meat and added an egg cooked in the fat free lime and basil. Overall I think I did pretty good for late night food. Worth going for the experience. Overall food was excellent. Great healthy choice.
