Great Breakfast

By Suz1884 |

Gumbo and grits - who would have thought this would be a great breakfast item - it was. Did order side of fried egg to add to this wonderful combination. Hash browns were nice and crispy. Eggs done as ordered.

Fantastic fish in casual place

By GlobalNomad V |

We came here twice for lunch. The fish is great. I had the grilled tilapia with grilled vegetables. For dessert the key lime pie. The interior speaks fish: many photos and a lot of Billy Bass hanging on the wall and under the ceiling. This gives the restaurant a uniqueness and a lot of charm. I like the casualness of the place. I'd come back any time.

Yum yum!

By Diana F |

Went with some friends who have been there many times, and it was REALLY good. We both had a 2-piece fried fish basket with okra and could easily have split it. Would love to go again.

Never Disappoints

By richandnanmassey |

Parking can be a challenge at times but the effort is well worth it. The food is fresh and well prepared and you even get to serve yourself as you pick up order at the counter. So you get a little exercise with your meal. Very reasonably priced and we will be back soon.

Fish camp...in Dallas!

By ncbluehog |

I gather it's a small chain restaurant. Visiting is like going to a fish camp, atmosphere is comfortable country style and the food is delicious. I had a grilled plate with grouper, veggies, beans & rice. Their burracho beans are really, really good. Looking forward to going back when I visit Dallas again.

Interesting setting

By Kalola2 |

The Flying Fish is truly fishy. Fish and fish pictures are all over the walls. 4 of us went for breakfast on a Saturday. I had scrambled eggs and sausage. The eggs were okay, but I was not fond of the sausage. They offered free refills on coffee.

You Betta' Hush 'yo Mouth...and Chew!

By Traveling TRISH |

Stopped by Flying Fish while attending a 3-Day Workshop. It was sooo good!!! EVERYTHING was freshly prepared. The hush puppies were AMAZING!!!

Such fun

By liztudor |

What a great place for breakfast. Had one of the best egg tacos I've ever eaten, and the beans are slow simmered and delicious. Lots to read and laugh about on the walls so kids (big and little) won't get bored. Priced way right!

Great seafood--have never had a bad experience here. Best hushpuppies in town!

Great seafood--have never had a bad experience here. Best hushpuppies in town!

The food was not as good as the atmosphere

By Novi M |

Judging from the name, Flying Fish, and the good reviews, we hoped to have some great fish and seafood dishes in here, cajun style. I really love the interior decoration and the ambiance, it is pretty unique and good for photo. But then the quality of the food is so average, with the price given. Not good value at all. Too greasy and oily, and the sauce was so generic. French fries was kind of bland, popeye cajun fries is much better. Hush puppies, catfish, just your regular things and nothing special or very deliciously addictive about them. Catfish at Babe's chicken is better, even though it's not their specialty. Gumbo was too small and not so flavorful... Everything was forgettable ... fortunately they were still edible so I didn't give 2 star. Things that I remember from this place is how unique their rest room was, and how very creative the restaurant theme that is dedicated to fishing and all that is related to fishing. Nice gimmick, but sorry I didn't come for gimmick.

Casual

By Lois M |

Fish is great. Love the casual atmosphere. Prices are great. We go here quite often and our grandchildren love it to.

Business lunch

By Ranchman58 |

What a great place to have lunch. I had the fried shrimp and oyster basket and both the shrimp and oysters were cooked to perfection. You stand in line to order and pay and they give you a pager to alert you when it’s ready. The food is very good. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Very healthy options! Protien platter n make it snappy!

By Hank512 |

Great low carb buisness lunch! The protien platter comes with a filet of your choice with zucchini squash, grilled or fried and a dz oysters either fried or on the half shell. The grilled filet and veggies were on point and a great choice. The oysters were served properly and were average size. No regrets here and I shall return with my friends.

My New Favorite Seafood Place!

By Retired_in_MX |

My first time here and what a nice surprise! Great atmosphere and great food. We had a large group and they handled us perfectly. So many choices we will have to come again & again to try our favorites. The service and quality was excellent. The Gumbo and Grits were superb! A great experience all-around!

Interesting and very good restaurant

By Serge M |

Atmosphere and appearance do not give the impression that you will eat well, but the quality of the food and the way it is cooked is really worth a try. Fresh fish, well prepared, really something which deserves a visit to Flying a Fish.

Delicious seafood!

By Rachel R |

We tried three different meals. Shrimp tacos were mildly spicy, fish tacos were not spicy although I did ask for extra spicy and the burger didn't disappoint. I really like to go back again!

Nice local joint

By Alan B |

I was staying down the street from this restaurant, and someone at the hotel recommended it. I had the grilled tilapia, traditional style, which is just salt-and-pepper, and it was really moist and flavorful. It comes with grilled vegetables, and red beans and rice. The beans and rice were a little salty, but good. I had a side of corn on the cob, which was sweet. Topped it off with a bottle of Presidente beer and it made for a nice dinner.

Good, casual, coastal seafood

By Rather_Nomadic |

Almost identical to their other locations I have visited. Nice walkable location. Food is well prepared, coastal seafood. Nothing fancy, but they don't claim to be fancy. Counter-service but everything is cooked to order. Great fish tacos and others in my party enjoyed the fried catfish. Nice, affordable place to stop before a night out in uptown Dallas. Kids are no problem. Three different eating areas: by the kitchen, a screened-in-porch area and a few tables outside.

Many Choices and Good Food

By GoAndDo |

The Flying Fish is a casual seafood restaurant in the Park Cities area of Dallas. The decor is that of an old fishing shack and has a feel of New Orleans flair. You feel comfortable the moment you walk in the door. The walls and ceilings are covered with pictures of great catches. In the front room, humorously called the "Liars Wall", are lots of plaques of Billy Bass, a fake fish. There are many choices of fish, shrimp, crawfish, chicken, salad and veggies. You can have fried, grilled or blackened entrees. The beer choices are good with bottled local brews available. This is a gem of a spot and one that I will return to again and again. Be sure to try the hush puppies.

Great Sunday Lunch - Preston Center

By wheels1954 |

This place is FUN! We went around noon on a beautiful 70 degree Sunday for a fast casual meal. The staff is friendly and welcome you, and there are plenty of tables and busboy's keeping the place clean. My mother-in-law wanted a Cheese Burger and I didn't think a fish place would have one, but they did, and it was delicious according to her, served with good French Fries and a couple of Hush Puppies. My wife had a Grilled Tilapia Po'Boy that she loved and I had a Catfish Basket with fries and a side of their very good Cole Slaw. Servings were generous and since it's self service - you save the tip. Soft drinks and tea are self serve too, which I prefer over waiting for someone to come around offering refills. They also offer beer, wine and margaritas if you're so inclined (to bad they aren't self service!). (:-) Part of the restaurant is open air, which was great for a beautiful day. On Sundays they also offer "The Preachers Special" which is Oysters on the Half Shell for just 0.75 cents each. We didn't try them but I did see a gentleman on his second platter enjoying himself. Great menu, great atmosphere, great food, fair prices, walls and ceilings covered with hundreds of Billy Bass's that they will Adopt and give you a free Catfish Basket for it (just in case you still have one at home in a closet somewhere).

Great Fried Shrimp

By texasrepublichistory |

Flying Fish Restaurant in Preston Center is one of my favorite casual places to have great seafood. The outside of the building blends in with the other shops in the shopping center, but inside it is pure lakeside/country cafe, with barn-wood and corrugated metal on the walls and checkered tablecloths on the tables. Lots of seating in two rooms with tables and booths, but fills up at lunchtime. we went at 11:30 and had no trouble. Great fried shrimp and hush-puppies and my other trips to try non-fried fish were as good. Parking can be a problem, even with the recommended parking across the street in the big two-level lot. Another reason for going early if possible. Recommended for fun, casual dining and great seafood.

Awesome breakfasts in unique setting!

By SoCalGal2010 |

Who would think a Fish restaurant could make such a yummy breakfast?!?! Enjoy delicious omelets and grits, while surrounded by hundreds of fish pictures and fishing memorabilia on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. The atmosphere really matches the fun and friendly service from the restaurant employees. Next time you are shopping in the Preston center, look for a flying fish at the entrance and check out this Dallas treasure!

What happened to one of my favorite fish restaurants???

By Texascrazy |

We have been eating here since it opened and I love the whole fried catfish, but yesterday everything went south. The fish looked like a filet had been taken off both sides as the meat was so thin I could hardly find it in the “new” extra thick breading and over-cooked as were the hush puppies as well as the okra. My husband’s filets were 1/8”-1/4” of meat covered in thick breading and also over-cooked. His raw oysters were so small it looked as if they took one nice gulf oyster and cut it into 4 pieces to make 4 half shells. The cook should be fired (if not prosecuted)!

Average food but fast service

By Saud D |

After reading the reviews I thought I'll stop by as I was in the neighbourhood. I ordered the protein platter , Texas red fish and grouper Cajun style spicy The fish was bland with no flavour Seasoning was weak The grouper Was cooked well but the red fish was over done , dry, chewy, and was like eating rubber Guy at the cash was helpful I don't think I'll go back again

Near hotel

By OJM653 |

Great place and service, good variety and really fresh. We did really enjoyed our visit for lunch that we decided to return for breakfast but got there 5 min too late but well worth it; we then decided to go for the shrimp tacos and a huge dozen oysters that were on sale for $0.75 each. Fantastic, we will highly recommend this place for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Enjoy it!!

Still excellent catfish

By eatsallinsects |

Another late lunch for daughter and I. Always dependable food here although a bit on the high dollar side: $15.00 for a basket of 3 (large) pieces of fried catfish and one glass of iced tea. The basket did include a large amount of French fries.

Go on Sunday for oysters

By Carrie B |

We go on Sundays when they serve oysters on the half-shell for 75 cents each but whoever is shucking needs some practice.

Excellent food at amazing prices

By Kris-Tina W |

Local favorite in Dallas Preston Center. Excellent fresh fish and shellfish. Many entrees have a little Cajun twist, but they many do not. Generous portions, frequent specials and very casual, child friendly atmosphere. Good selection of beer in bottles or on tap and delicious iced tea. Trout with 2 vegetables <$14, rainbow trout <$15, moist and perfectly cooked. Fried catfish, okra, coleslaw, yummy, about $10. I am no longer allowed raw oysters, but my friends assure me they are plump and sweet. This is a gem of a place, good Southern comfort without breaking your wallet.

Great food and Great Value

By tw__100043323 |

Casual walk-up ordering with a nice room with lots of seating. Very reasonable pricing and I have never had a bad meal. Crawfish is in season and that has been my go-to recently.

Great breakfast

By John D |

A seafood restaurant with excellent breakfasts. Who would have thought? This is definitely a do over for breakfast and for every other meal. I'm a fisherman and so I love the atmosphere with all of the fishermen and their catch on the walls throughout. I enjoyed my gumbo omelette and my wife's Kimberly omelette was excellent. This place is great.

Awesome food, Awesome customer service

By courtbeajack |

Called and placed a carryout order. Ray confirmed our order and made sure we called the correct location. We were in town for the OU/TX football game. I have patronized Flying Fish in Little Rock and always enjoyed so I suggested this place to my parents for our Saturday dinner. Our GPS gave bad directions and we got lost. We knew we were close but called the location to get better directions. Ray answered and told my dad the cross streets and mentioned the parking structure on the other side of the street from their location. 5 minutes later we were walking through the door. Greeted by Ray who gave us free drinks for our stress. The location was also minutes from closing. We asked Ray for better directions back to our location. This awesome guy drew us a map!!!! We got back to our hotel in half the time it took us to find the location. The food did not disappoint. My parents were impressed and enjoyed the fare. Flying fish exceeds expectations and the customer service is A+.

Casual & great food

By Lynda W |

We've been going to Flying Fish for a couple of years for lunch. My husband loves their fried catfish. I personally like the salmon salad. They have great grilled veggies & red beans & rice. We both love their Mexican Shrimp Cocktail and beer in cold mugs. Wine at different price points. You will see business people & people in flip flops. Fun & relaxed environment- Very good food. I'm sure you will enjoy it!!!

As Good as New Orleans

By Lackland B |

Never had a bad meal here-catfish, shrimp, oysters, frog legs, trout, salmon, jambalaya. Always tasty.Get here early. It gets crowded.

Great fish

By mgn988 |

This is place is very casual... you can eat healthy or go all out and get the deep fried stuff... Their fish is always fresh and made to order....

One of my favorites !

By ALEX E |

If one just wants seafood fare , grilled, fried, or raw ( ioysters,) this is the spot. It is casual, loud, and the food choices are delightfully numerous. From crawfish, chowder, grilled fish to fried baskets this spot will not, in my opinion, disappoint.

This is my kinda place!

By Bobby S |

A local friend recommended Flying Fish as a great, local, convenient, cool place for lunch. Was he ever right!!!!!! I LOVED THIS PLACE!!! The atmosphere is fun, the food is excellent and the staff super friendly!! I had the grilled catfish plate and it was Awesome!!! You should definitely give Flying Fish a try!!!

Louisiana Cuisine in Dallas? YUM!

By Fototravlr01 |

Allow me to recommend, “The Flying Fish” restaurant in Dallas, TX presenting delicious Creole and Cajun Cuisine. Actually, there are 8 of these restaurants in a chain located in Texas, Arkansas, and Memphis, TN. So let's talk about the one I visited in the Preston Center area. I am fortunate in that I travel frequently, and in doing so, I am more fascinated in finding those restaurants that are the favorites of the locals, rather than eating in the typical tourist restaurants that may offer fine foods, but at prices that will be sure to empty your wallet more than they satisfy your appetite. The Flying Fish restaurant is not a fancy place at all. You eat your food sitting on benches sitting in front of a wooden table. There are no waitresses. You order your food by standing in line and ordering at a counter that is the front of a very large kitchen. Either blues or Zydeco music is playing on overhead ceiling speakers. With that, one of the chefs/cooks will serve your food and as you taste it, you will swear you are eating in any one of the finest eateries in New Orleans. The gumbo is authentic gumbo, not gumbo-like. The seafood – all of it – is flown in fresh from the gulf coast every day. There are also catfish, shrimp, grouper, snapper, jambalaya, grits, fried okra, all of which are prepared expertly. The bread pudding is every bit as good as anything in New Orleans. The restaurant is located 3 blocks south of the wonderfully comfortable Hilton Park City Hotel, also highly recommended. For a wonderful of experience of New Orleans cuisine at inexpensive prices, don’t miss an opportunity to eat at The Flying Fish in Dallas, TX. I highly recommend it.

Love the place but had a bad night

By Carolea G |

Ordered my favorite fried catfish....waited all day and just knew it would be worth all the calories. Surprise! It came out half cooked and new potatoes cold. Slaw was wonderful, per usual, as was the spinach Must have new cooks..should have sent it back but too tired to worry with it, so left the fried catfish and ate all the rest including delicious hush puppies. Normally always terrific...eat there about twice a month. Hope I can report all wonderful on the next visit.

Overcooked fish.

By Jeff P |

A fish restaurant that overcooks grilled fish...What? ordered grilled snapper. Beautiful filet. Couldn't eat it. SO overcooked. Red beans and rice were great though.

An easy dinner to enjoy

By Francia S |

During a business trip to Dallas I got to explore the Park Cities area and discovered this fabulously un-fancy seafood spot. I ordered the trout dinner special and a bowl of crawfish chowder. The grilled trout came with zucchini and rice. A basket with all different kinds of hot sauce was sitting on the table and so I just had to try a green molé-like sauce. Both the platter and the chowder really hit the spot and as I ate, I reviewed the gallery of signed, framed photos that covered the walls of the restaurant, all pictures of fishing trips by young and old, solo and group. Popular with the locals and students. I sure wish there was a place like this near me offering such a huge variety of dishes so I could take my time sampling each item off the menu. I'd either be dining in or taking out at least once a week!

Unique seafood in Preston Center - Dallas

By T B |

Flying Fish offers a unique decor of adopted fish on plaques - - on the walls and ceilings. I prefer the lobster stew. Grilled fish is also great. There is self service of soda, tartar sauce, catsup, etc.

Kind of a country funky place

By Anthony K |

I was with a group that wasn't all that impressed with the rustic lay-out, but I sure was impressed with my meal (we've been eating a lot of BBQ beef this trip and I needed to eat something that hadn't walk on four legs.) Maybe my choice of the grilled trout with beans and rice and grilled squash was plain dumb luck, it was all very tasty, and I see from a previous positive review that this is probably a consistently well-liked selection. Next time I'll try something fried, the posted menu was pretty extensive. Also liked the bluesy music playing.

Great laid back spot

By LanceRyan |

The food is good. The service is good. The gumbo was great the first visit. It was good the second. As far as fried fish and seafood goes, this place is tough to beat.

Flying Fish must cost more

By DonJancauskas |

My wife and I both like seafood and especially fried fish & shrimp so we stop anytime we see a restaurant specializing in seafood dishes. The Flying Fish is OK as far as the food is concerned but it offers nothing out of the ordinary except the price. I guess it takes a lot more effort to catch those flying fish so that's why it cost a lot more to eat there.

Great Breakfast

By SculptorDallas |

great food at reasonable prices, fast service, it is breakfast with a twist. Enjoy gumbo with grits and the taco with sausage.

Get the snappy anything

By Adam H |

Pictured is the snappy grilled trout. First time here, lots of parking near by in the ramp. 3 different seating options, outside on the sidewalk, inside with large open windows, and inside inside. Seat yourself. There are tons of things all over the walls and ceiling to look at while you are there (cheap entertainment). The food comes quick, and it is very good. The beans and rice were wonderful! The geilled zucchini and squash were perfect, not to mention the fish! Don't think twice about coming here, just go.

Hot Lips

By Elizabeth C |

A great find on my wander to fill my tummy. Great welcome and fun decor. Ordered something I'd never had and forgot to ask how hot it would be - big mistake. Dish looked interesting (Crawfish special) and started to attack it with gusto - two and half crawfish in my lips were burning. Still needed sustenance so went back to counter to order something different (shrimp this time, as I knew what I was ordering). Gentleman behind the counter (sorry, should have asked his name) was so kind, I quite rightly expected to pay as there was nothing wrong with the first order, but he wouldn't charge me for the second meal. Would have written a positive review anyway but, the service I received, made it an even better choice. Thank you team.

Once a week, every week.

By starfishprime |

The Flying Fish is my weekly lunch with my Dad. Having been born and raised in the south, I have eaten at least as much if not more catfish than any other human being on the planet but these days, I only eat catfish at the Flying Fish. Always light and flavorful but without some of the bold fishyness that can weigh lots of catfish down, I have to say this is my favorite. They have many menu options for the non-fried fish fans and on Sundays, they have a 50 cent oyster half shell special. Yesterday, I had my first crawfish of the season. They are tucked back off of Northwest Highway and Preston Road and not always easily seen from either, it is worth the time to venture off in search of the place. Quirky decor with a prominent "Billy the Bass Adoption Center," they have two sections; one is climate controlled and the other has garage style doors that can be opened on nice days. Be prepared for a crowd during peak times. Also, they have a frequent diner card to reward your frequent fun.

Consistent quality

By zjjdad |

Our latest visit was another winner. Quality food, prepared quickly to high standards. A neighborhood favorite for our whole family - adults and kids. And if you have a picture of you and one that didn't get away, you can post it on the wall!

Casual and classic

By Matt Blum |

This is the quintessential, classic fish spot. Super casual with checkered tablecloths. But, enough about that. We're talking about food. I had the shrimp poor boy and I'm pretty tough on these things. The bread is key, and they aced the test. Perfectly fried shrimp lay inside with pickles, lettuce and sauces. Yumm! Can't wait to come back.

Not bad and good value for money

By Eileen B |

If you like oysters this is a place you must visit. They are fresh and still have a sea flavour on them and are very cheap too. We loved their calamari and french fries which were both very fresh and made at the moment and also very crispy and tasty. The restaurant looks like a diner and you need to go order yourself but I think if you are in the are do drop by and try their food.

I have been coming here many years..

By Brennan D |

And this may be the only consistent restaurant i have been to. They constantly deliver excellent service and the food is fantastic. My favorite is the salmon plate, my wife - the salmon salad- my grandfather loves the catfish and my dad has probably tried everything on the menu. Thanks guys!!!!

What Fun!

By Titan27 |

This is such a great place to go when visiting Dallas - a very unique but good restaurant. The menu is vast so you can definitely find something you like and the staff is all so friendly. Lots of fun to look at all the memorabilia on the walls too. If there is a line, it will move fast but it's fun to visit with the other people in line!

Great Restaurant

By Sam H |

This is a really great restaurant. The selection of seafood and atmosphere makes this restaurant worth visiting. Its a hidden gem with friendly staff and delicious food!

great place to eat

By Wade R |

This is a great place to eat. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is great. It is usually crowded but they handle the volume very well. Breakfast is good with lots of menu options. A popular place and I know why. Will eat here again the next time I am in the area.

Great food

By Mcaltom |

I was in town and had lunch with coworkers here. The food was great, especially the crawfish chowder. Good location and excellent service. Probably not the best setting if you were having a serious business meeting. However, with co workers, friends, or family, it would be great

Seafood Galore

By cm55323 |

All types of seafood/fish offerings. From fried shrimp, catfish, oysters to wonderful grilled fish served w/veggies. Mexican cocktail is good, slightly sweet. Great meal, good value, casual and fun atmosphere.

A Flying Fish Restaurant that Is Really "A Flying Fish!"

By John H |

The Flying Fish restaurant located @ Preston Center sets a high bar of excellence for quality of food & interior ambiance. Most of the Flying Fish restaurants are similar in interior floor design with a push-through "screen" door dividing the main dining room from the kitchen along with extra seating. A very good use of space & also adds a "down-home comfort look." I love catfish, fried okra, & all the other unhealthy fixings that go along with this particular food, & I have literally tried all the sites of this chain @ least once in the DFW area. This is the first Flying Fish that I have ever taken the time to review since most "chain" restaurants seem to be about the same; but, I stand corrected after having a better-than-usual catfish dinner @ this particular site, & the ambiance of the setting seemed more inviting than a few other sites of the same chain that I have visited. In any event, the fried whole catfish @ this site is perfect: balanced coating, tasteful, & huge portions. Quality ingredients that all taste fresh, & great service. The Flying Fish brand was started by an experienced restauranteur from Big D: Mr. Shannon Wynne, who also owns & operates restaurants in six states & 14 major cities. Mr. Wynne is also a generous philanthropist in the DFW area, & he gives both his time & money to worthy city planning that contributes to positive urban growth, & charities. Kudos to Mr. Wynne for bringing us the Flying Fish!

Good basic fried seafood, great atmosphere.

By wildbillwww |

Flying Fish is a regular for us. A 2-for-1 coupon is always appreciated. I ordered the four fried shrimp and one catfish fillet dinner. The best side is the rice and beans, the French fries are greasy. The hush puppy balls are a great extra. This is a great value with great atmosphere.

Great fish!

By Mary Alice M |

Had lunch there yesterday. I had the combo plate with 6 oysters and 6 shrimp (breaded & fried, with french fries). Wonderful! However, I couldn't eat it all, so I brought it home and my husband and I split the leftovers for our afternoon snack. He had catfish for lunch - his favorite! We like the casual atmosphere. We always see someone we know although Dallas is a good place, this is a good neighborhood joint.

Great food in a Casual atmosphere

By Diane H |

This restaurant is obviously a local favorite as it always seemed very busy. We had shrimp which was very good. This is definitely not a fancy restaurant but worth the visit

Casual & Good Value

By DavidNCarolyn |

Stopped in for dinner and Carolyn enjoyed a pound of boiled shrimp while I had shrimp taco. The catfish a d hush puppies are a great choice also and all sure seem fresh and reasonable price.

Love love love the fish!

By Jordan S |

One of my fav places in Dallas ! Everything is good but I think they do the fried food best. I love the combo plate with shrimp , catfish and hush puppies. Yummy!!! Fried okra is awesome too!

Excellent Food, Fun Atmosphere.

By mbtexas76 |

We accidentally ran across this location on Luther Lane. We had eaten at the other location in Addison. This location is great. Much better than the Addison. We loved all the Flying fish and pictures on the wall. Make sure you check them out. Everything we ate was well cooked and tasted great. There were 4 in our party. Catfish, Shrimp, Seafood Gumbo, Grilled Tilapia, and Trout. The fries, cole slaw, and okra were also very good. We will definitely be going back to this location. 4 Shrimp/ 2 Catfish fillets...$13.99 Seafood Gumbo....$5.49 Grilled Tilapia...$11.99 Grilled Trout....$11.99 There was nothing left on anyone's plate. Everything was good.

Fun casual fish and more

By Joe B |

Very casual dining where you order at the counter and pick up your food when it is ready. Very good selection of fish dishes, salads and one of the best burgers in town. Breakfast is very good too.

Not fancy - just great food, funky environment

By MSLovell |

Walk in and go through the "order" doors to the room where the magic happens. Menu is on wall. A huge assortment of options. One piece of catfish ? Two ? Three? Catfish and shrimp ? You decide what you want. Don't want the fries and hush puppies ? Ask for green beans, fried okra or something else. I had catfish basket with fried okra - absolutely delicious! Others in group had grilled fish, or shrimp and salad and all looked and tasted yummy. Will be back.

Fish any way you like it

By Nicole W |

I really enjoyed this place (it is a chain). There were all types of fish and fish boils. You can have it fried, grilled or broiled. I had the grilled grouper and oysters on the half shell (raw) and I really enjoyed them. The tables has about 12 different hot sauces, raw horse raddish, and plenty of lemons are available. Overall this is a very laid back place where the whole family can find something to eat

Grilled rainbow trout. Yum!

By stlcardinals09 |

Nothing fancy just great trout red beans and rice with grilled squash. Go for lunch brunch or dinner you won't be disappointed

Delish

By Michaela G |

2nd time here on business in Dallas. Great food, comfortable atmosphere! Nothing fancy but always my first place to eat! Grilled to perfection. Lobster stew is great!

Quite and experience! And good food too!

By werollalong |

I was planning on going to a really nice restaurant which was next door to Flying Fish. As it turns out, that restaurant has closed. I noticed lots of happy people rushing to Flying Fish to eat. Now the place certainly isn't fancy, but people were happy and the food was good. I had fried catfish, hushpuppies, and red beans and rice. There is a sign there that says if there is any problem, to let them know so they can fix it right then. I told them the only problem I had was that I wanted more to eat because it was so good, but I was full. Very reasonably priced, good food and fun atmosphere. Try it when you are in a low-brow mood! :>

Flying Fish Is A Fabulous Catch In Preston Center!

By The_Case |

I've driven by this place too many times and had not stopped in. I had the same feeling for their Fort Worth location, but I was in Dallas' Preston Center this particular noon. It had become time for Flying Fish. From the time I walked in, I knew it was going to be a good seafood experience. After ordering at the counter and getting my Dr Pepper situated, my buzzer went off and I picked up a fried shrimp platter along with a cup of seafood gumbo. The fried shrimp was cooked in corn meal and had a marvelous texture and size for each of the six pieces I'd eaten, and you get to dip in a choice of tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. French fries were just the standard, thin size, but they tasted very good and were cooked just right. Two spicy hush puppies also provided another tasty side. As good as the platter was, the star of this show was the gumbo, with the right amount of thickness and all the usual things (including okra) that you'd want, and with the perfect spices. All in all, Flying Fish is a winner! Will I be back? You bet! Instead of just driving past this place, I'll have no problem stopping by. They've got other great things I want to try. Come see why my church friends also come here, and there's plenty of reason. Catch THIS place!

Market lunch was great

By Vaycay |

We arrived right after 11 for an earl lunch. The food came out quickly and was good. By 11:45 the place was packed so go early.

Good seafood

By LParnell |

We were just passing by looking for a meal and decided to drop in. Good choice. I had catfish and shrimp and fries. Everything was good. There is an extensive menu and daily specials.

What's not to love?

By Lisnn |

Great fish and fast. Hard to beat unless you are looking for ambiance. Snapper Veracruz, spinach and grilled squash hot the spot.

fast fish, some fried up stuff

By John K |

fast, fried, decent taste, decent price. easy in and out on NW highway location; would return. male dominant attendees

The catfish fillets were vay below average

How can you mess up fried catfish fillets? Go to the Flying Fish-Preston Center and find out! My fillets were 90% dripping greasy/way too salty, crumbly cornmeal batter and 10% slimey, gelatinous fish(?). At $8.99, two pieces of this of this way-below-average serving is money/time/indigestion very poorly spent. I'm guessing I went there on a really bad "off" day but they won't get a second chance for me. There are too many other really good places to eat in the area. Avoid this place.

Best power breakfast in Dallas and best value

1 -- Not only excellent breakfast but also a great value 2 -- the atmosphere is conducive for a power breakfast 3 -- weekdays lots of business being talked about 4 -- weekends the place for families

Get your fried seafood fix!

By Phillip K |

I stumbled on this place while on business travel in the Preston Center. A very casual, old school atmosphere. Fish and fishing paraphernalia adorn the wall. The food offerings include fried catfish, shrimp and oysters. I ordered the fried snapper Veracruz. Delicious. A generous portion. The menu is a tad pricey but not shockingly so.

Best Fresh FIsh; Grilled or Fried.

By Kare2Bme |

A local resident invited us here because it was good seafood, very reasonable and quick service. I was a little hesitant at first; but then I saw lots of young and older businessmen eating a quick lunch. The place was packed, but we got our food quickly. I had the snapper salad which included 2 large pieces on top of a huge bowl of lettuce and a few small tomatoes and cucumbers. We also sampled the fish tacos; while our friend had fried catfish with grilled vegetables, rice and beans. The lemonade was homemade and delicious. Beer is also available on tap. The cost was 1/2 of a fancy restaurant. This had a casual atmosphere. In business 50 years!

Deep fried fish is too dry

By 5flower |

My wife and I went there with our host. She ordered the Catfish fillest and shrimp, but I ordered the Grilled Tilapia. My Tilapia is tasty, but her fillets is too dry, and they tasted like plastic. We also saw that the cooks handled the fillet and fish with their bare hands, and we wondered if the health inspector ever come by.

Oysters on Half Shell

By Blazinpistol |

Stopped in, when I saw oysters on half shell on their outdoor sign. The place is really cool inside. I found the prices to be a little on the high side. But, maybe this is a trendy, expensive part of Dallas. I had a dozen oysters and one beer. Solo was over $20. Was it worth it? Not really. Oysters were still strongly attached to shells. So much, that I had to tear them loose with fingers. Horseradish was the mildest I had ever eaten. I had to cake it on the oysters to even taste it. Just being honest. I think, even a poboy sandwich and a beer, would be very close to $20k a person.

Great prices, Great seafood

By kaber03 |

I visited this casual seafood place on a whim. Don't let the casual and eccentric decor scare you away, the food is awesome. I've sampled the fish tacos, hush puppies, and catfish. All were severed promptly and were hot. I found the sauce on the fish tacos to be spicy. My friends are tried to gumbo and ceviche- both were excellent with a southern flair. A great place to get good seafood at a great price.

Fish , fish and more fish any way you choose

By shalom7 |

Old fashioned looking restaurant , with a wide choice of fish and prawn/ shrimp dishes , very tasty food at affordable prices , knowledgable staff, if you like fish it's for you. Fried , grilled or broiled , southern style comfort . An interesting meal , interesting unique choices , it's a casual restaurant so be prepared.

Very Good Seafood

By Daniel G |

The restaurant is open to the street in front with outside dining. There is also a couple of large inside dining rooms. You order your food at the counter and they give you a pager and you pick up your food when it is ready at the other end of the counter. The restaurant is very casual and priced accordingly. The food was excellent. We had fried catfish, fried oysters, poor boys and beer. Parking is available on the street close to the restaurant or in several parking garages nearby.

Good value for Seafood

By 5016DAH |

Shannon Wynne's long time seafood restaurant(s). Always consistently good food. Nice wait staff. Very quirky decor. Good value. Can get crowded on Sundays for Lunch.

Good value for the money

By Evelyn U |

Good fish - very rustic - hard to park since they are in Preston Center. Would go back when in the area.

Old favorite but not so much anymore.

By Topher57 |

This review is for the location at Village on the Parkway 5100 Beltline Road, Dallas. I have been going to this location for many years, the Gumbo, Shrimp Po Boy and daily specials have always been outstanding. I took my son their the other day to try the Po Boy and some Gumbo. I also had a cup Gumbo and the Catfish and Shrimp combo....it was a sad day. Both our gumbos just tasted bad, my son said the Po Boy was edible and my fried catfish was nothing less than mush, obviously due to being previously frozen and cooked poorly. One other item that I took as odd, the restaurant was slow when we arrived and including us, 4 tables were being used. From the time we arrived to the time we left there were 9 tables that had not been bussed, and as I mentioned it was a slow day for them. There was no excuse for 9 tables not to be bussed, I would say it was just lack of enthusiasm and not a good sign. I hope this location gets things fixed because I want my old Flying Fish back....TBD.

Family friendly gathering place with great food

By WhitePolarBear |

It's a very decent place for seafood. I am much more familiar with their breakfast/brunch. We usually go there on Sundays morning. They have a good variety of choices for breakfast. One of my all time favorites is their gumbo omelet. I haven't found it anywhere else.

Excellent catfish!!!

By islandmarsh |

Not greasy, cooked just right. Served with the best hush puppies ever and fries. Seriously, keep the fries and add more hush puppies! Lots of other seafood options, but why.

Great Cajun style food

By Jordan S |

Love this low key - Great food spot ! Love there steamed shrimp or fried catfish/shrimp combo. The hush puppies are killer. Large menu so there's something for everyone.

Worst Fish Experience

By Omar R |

My wife and I sought out this restaurant because we'd seen it while in the area a couple of weeks ago. We went there for dinner. I ordered the grilled snapper and my wife order the grilled grouper. My snapper was very chewy and dense as if it was grilled from a frozen state. It tasted horrible... I mean really, really bad. My wife's groupe however was decent and flavorful. The grilled vegetables were barely lukewarm and some were actually cold. I went back to the kitchen and complained about my snapper and instead of getting another snapper I just asked them to give me one catfush fillet. I will definitely not give this establishment another try... never!

Fantastic Fried Fish

By LSUGirl |

Being a native south Louisianian, I always welcome good seafood. The Flying Fish's fried fish did not disappoint. Thin, crispy, flavorful. Adorable quirky river house decor. Prices are reasonable. Service is order at the counter and pick up when ready. Nothing fancy, but one of the best fried fish Hubby and I have had in Dallas.

One of MY Faves

neighborhood place we go for fish. got 1 gallon of LOBSTER BISQUE to take to mom's for Christmas. It was the HIT of the dinner, AWESOME

Not Fishy, Fish

By cm55323 |

Great casual fish restaurant. Fun atmosphere, very laid back - come as you are ! Lots of fish options, grilled, fried, blackened- great grilled salmon w/veggies !!! Good gumbo, shrimp and grits. Good value for the $$$,

Not just fish...A good breakfast!

By LNVTug |

We were staying at the Hilton a few blocks away looking for a breakfast spot and stumbled into a fish house. Go figure...lots of breakfast options, good portions, fast service and reasonable prices. Nothing fancy...very kitsch with fish and fishing related decor everywhere. It was quirky...but a perfect everyday breakfast that did not break the bank.

No More Livers, But the Frog Legs ARE GREAT

By Annie O |

Being a "born and raised Texan," fishing (by my Mother and Daddy) and eating them were a part of my early life. But out in the desert, I long for those home-cooked fish meals. Except for the two or three chain seafood restaurants that have opened in Albuquerque, NM and Cracker Barrel (which I frequent often), I/we do not get the really good deep fried catfish and the trimmings out in the Land of Enchantment. So it is a no-brainer when I visit my daughter that lives a few blocks from the Flying Fish in University Park (Dallas), TX we head right-on over and I get my fill of Texas "cats." On a recent trip a couple of weeks ago, they had removed a favorite of mine - fried livers - but they made up for it on the fried frog legs - like my Daddy used to "gig." (The pix below is of my Canadian daughter visiting my UP (Dallas) TX daughter - Frog Legs are a family thing)

Excellent Business Breakfast

By D David |

I was in Dallas for a business meeting and we chose FF. It is very centrally located and convenient. The casual interior is filled with photos of fishing trips, mostly local Dallas fishermen. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming. The coffee was fresh, the eggs with avocado sandwich was huge, and the grits were very southern. I happen to run into several old business friends that were enjoying breakfast too, so it added to the enjoyment of the visit. One friend said this a favorite cafe for locals and they meet there weekly. It's a great place to experience.

Yum

By cyclical00GT |

Great food and fun atmosphere. Very laid back and casual. Good variety of food options, although I would enjoy a larger beer selection.

Good grilled fish

Went to this restaurant for lunch. The fish here are cooked very good. There are a lot of parking space nearby. Staffs are very friendly.

A Suprise Find!

By m0mthattravels |

Walking down the street to another restaurant, we happened upon the Flying Fish and decided to change our dinner plans. Sure glad we did! The fried okra was just like grandmother used to make, the tilapia and shrimp poppers - WOW!

The name "lured me in" and hooked me on their breakfast.

By FamilyTravellerMI |

The Flying Fish was recommended to me by a local as an interesting local breakfast spot in Dallas. He didn't know my familial connection to fishing or love of grits. I happily spent two hours seated at a booth enjoying a delicious Greek omelet and bottomless cup of coffee surrounded by things "fishing". There were countless photo's of fisher men, women and children with their big catch. I loved the casual arrangement. Good food fast and inexpensive. Nice! I will return and recommend colleagues check it out.

Favorite Casual Fish Food

By Lurline M |

I love everything on the menu, and that includes the breakfast menu. The fish tacos are some of the best in Dallas. Excellent fried shrimp, and the chicken is fantastic.

I wanted Seafood!

By LFROMTX |

Our plans for lunch in Dallas changed and we were lucky to find this place as an alternative as we drove to our late afternoon destination. Sunday's special is oysters on the half shell for $0.75 each. We had the oysters, gumbo, and the Hog Wallow Fry (2 Catfish, 4 Shrimp and 6 Oysters with fries and slaw), and the key lime pie. We would order it all again except the gumbo.

Way over priced, terrible service..

By LaLaD |

I came here with my friends not long ago because they enjoyed the flying fish in fortworth... This is not the same and I wont be returning.. Service was not the greatest and the food is not nearly as good.. Place isn't very clean either!

When you don't like bare walls

By rossf976 |

The South is famous for quirky local restaurants, so perhaps we shouldn’t be overly surprised that the owners of Flying Fish apparently don’t like bare walls. The Dallas, Texas, local (mostly) chain has fed its obsession by carpeting the walls with fake fish and photos. The Billy Bass Adoption Center, as the sign proclaims it, features bass mounted on trophy-esque planks attached to walls and ceiling. By the hundreds. I tried to count. Forget it. All bass were allegedly snagged by patrons, indicated by names and dates. Oddly, every one of these trophy fish look identical. Well, not so oddly, when you recognize “Billy Bass.” Remember? Those singing plastic fish that were so popular a few years back? These bass weren’t singing. Maybe that’s saved for special occasions. Framed photographs squeeze around the Billys, also in the multiple hundreds, surely, a reminder of those old restaurants from the 40s that liked to show off their famous past patrons. No one in these photos looked too famous. Wait! Is that George Bush at the table by the corner? His office is around here, so I snapped a picture. But naw. No president would risk strolling around Dallas. Consider the history. It’s probably word clutter to tell you that the Flying Fish features, well, fish. Catfish, of course, but also a bit of trout, salmon, grouper and such. On the crustacean side we have shrimp, crawfish, lobster. Gumbo. Grits and hush puppies. Po’ Boys. Fried okra. Raw oysters on the half shell! (A bit on the small side.) Beer on tap. Breakfast starts at 7. You order at the counter, pick up yourself, eat among Billys, nothing fancy. What more could you want, really? Well, one thing is not on the menu. Bass.

Great Breakfast

By Joey Bagodonuts |

All-around great joint for breakfast. Big selection, great food, quick service. Coffee's good & I always run into someone I know there. Never a dull moment. Don't worry about the name. Go on in & tell 'em Joey sent you.

Excellent grilled or friend catfish.

By John C D |

I visit Dallas about every two months and always try to visit Flying Fish. Usually, I get grilled or friend catfish, and both are excellent. The restaurant offers one or two other fish and shrimp. It has items for people who do not prefer seafood, as well. There seems to be something on the menu for three generations of our family. You order at a counter and then pick up your order when it is ready. The atmosphere is casual, almost like a seafood shack or picnic shack. It is clean and comfortable. The prices provide good value. The staff is friendly and courteous.

PDG!

Line up with the locals and enjoy seafood cooked just about any way you can want. Rustic and "fishy" atmosphere. Breakfast is a total surprise and really good!

One of my fave casual Dallas eateries

By Kassira |

I love this place so much. Huge seafood menu plus other fare to satisfy everyone. Anazing blues music and beer and wine selections. I love this place so kuch I chose it for my birthday dinner with my family last year. 5 stars!

Honest to goodness catfish & hush puppies!

By Frogman S |

If you go south, you HAVE to have BBQ and catfish! This place is a real-live catfish restaurant! The hush puppies, banana pudding (OMG! The banana pudding...!) and even the sweet ice tea is well worth where ever you come from in the Dallas area. Great value, great food & super fast service! Why are you still reading this? Get going!!!!!

Great spot for a casual breakfast

By Woodstock1968 |

I met a couple business associates here for breakfast - their recommendation. We had a nice, casual breakfast. There's plenty of choices and prices are reasonable - $25 with tip for three of us.

Fun for fish, and burgers too

By joanna s |

Easy in and out place to go for a casual dinner or lunch. The burgers here are actually pretty good. I hear that they make a good breakfast.

Catfish, Oysters, Shrimp, Hush Puppies, and Beer

By gfdenton |

Casual (read "one step up from crude" in exactly the right way) eatery. What else could you want? Excellent preparation, they got it. Fun atmosphere, they got it. Reasonable price, yeah. Served "Fast Food Style" BIG but, they do not pre-fry the food, you get to wait while they get it right. That is a good thing. After too much food, Key Lime Pie, may be the best we have found in Dallas.

Many better options in four block area

By janes319 |

As we had a fabulous experience at this restaurant in Ft. Worth, we couldn't wait to eat at the Dallas location. The only similarity was the decor. Our fish was not fresh and was burned. The grilled vegetables were also burned, even though they were also mushy. The beans and rice were served at room temperature to slightly warm and were undercooked. Banana pudding served straight from the refrigerator was good. There was no identifiable management. We will return to Ft. Worth and encourage others to join us.

Very good and priced reasonable

By Jim S |

Our first experience here. Did not know until we ordered that on Sunday night, they have oysters on the half shell for .75 apiece. We had catfish and shrimp. Delicious. French fries were very good. Lemonade is some of the best I have ever had. Price is very reasonable.

Rubber fish

By Trish D |

How many ways can one fry a fish? It is amazing how people flock to a place that has mediocre quality seafood camouflaged by batter and grease. Purchase a nice fillet of fish and some fresh shrimp from Central Market. Simple butter, lemon, salt and pepper goes a long way without the calories- and is much friendlier on your pocketbook.

“Make it snappy”

By Robert M |

Great little fish place that fries and grills their food. You can get your order regular, “make it snappy” (ie spicy) or garlic butter. Clearly, I like it snappy. The fish is fresh and they also have shrimp, oysters and crawfish when in season. Plates get served w ride and beans w grilled zucchini and squash. Fries and hush puppies come w baskets. The catfish is outta site.

Great Local Cajun Cooking

Awesome Oysters, Hot Boiled Shrimp, Fried Grits covered in Gumbo and Cold Beer. How can it get any better

Fun place and typical fried fish

By cjg2901 |

It's a cute place to eat fried fish. Since we don't eat fried foods often, when we want some good fried shrimp, this is our place.
