Great little restaurant!

By waldo_traveler |

We arrived in Austin on a Friday evening and after traveling a good majority of the day, and not having any real food since breakfast, I told my daughter who lives there, to pick a place with real, good food, but casual-- sandwiches or simple entrees and the like. FoodHeads it was, and Great Choice!! The restaurant is in a converted house in a nice neighborhood in central Austin with outdoor and indoor seating. We were a party of five and ordered the beef & brie, apple pork, and chicken special sandwiches, and I ordered the crab cakes. The service was good, and the food was great-- really hit the spot. Tasty and filling, but not so overly stuffed that we didn't have room for dessert. Pastry bread pudding with sugar cane rum sauce (they use their day old croissants and bakery for the bread pudding instead of tossing them :) ) and key lime pie. They were both awesome-- we ended up sharing them around the table so everyone could have a bit of heaven to end of their meal. Beverages were serve yourself with choices from canisters of two kinds of tea, water, lemonade and a couple more options. Prices were definitely fair and reasonable. We actually liked it enough to have lunch here on the last day of our vacation. Again, the food just really hits the spot. Will definitely go back on future trips to Austin.

Decent Sandwich in a Fun Place

By Counterweight |

I've been to Foodheads several times, and I've enjoyed it every time, but I've never loved it. The ambiance is great, it can get a little hot outside depending on the time of year but that's typical of outside dining in Austin. I've often been here with vegetarians, and I've always found there to be extensive options for vegetarians and carnivores alike. I've tried several different sandwiches ( both veg and non-veg), and I've never had a bad one. I personally think it's a little expensive for what you get, but not outrageously so. And I also think the setting is pretty cool and worth paying a bit more for. As noted earlier, I've been here multiple times, and I will definitely go again in the future. The sandwiches are tasty enough, but not outstanding to the point that Foodheads would make my "must try" list for Austin.

Solid sandwiches

Best hot pastrami in Austin and the cucumber tomato salad that comes as a side was great. Highly recommend for lunch.

A real find.

By Darla H |

This place is amazing! I bring all my friends here, and they love it, too. It's hip and cozy at the same time. The food is consistently wonderful, and because it's in an old house it's open and quiet enough to settle in for a nice visit over lunch or dinner. Mornings are also nice. I stopped by before work today to grab a cup of coffee and breakfast burrito and soaked up a moment of zen -- birds singing and bacon cooking. Heaven!

Good but tough

By Austin_TexasCowboy |

My wife and I had lunch recently at FoodHeads. On the plus side, the portabella mushroom sandwich my wife had was excellent, as was my home made lemonade. However, the pastrami sandwhich I had, while having a very good taste, was very, very tough. You need to stay away from it. Otherwise, a nice university environment for good food.

Tantalizing Food to put in your facehole on your Head

Had breakfast tacos last time and meant to write review, bc amazing service, tasty food and solid atmosphere

The salmon salad - messy but ummmmm good!

By auroralebrun |

I love this place and have introduced friends and familly to it as they have the best and sometimes most unusual sandwiches in Austin. The salmon sald sandwich even if I always manage to make a mess of it. I have tried other options and all have been very good, including the eggplant sandwich. At a recent visit the place was packed and they were short handed, which caused the meal to take longer than usual. The manager took the time to come by our table to apologize for the delay and make sure everything was to our satisfaction, and it was. The hectic pace did not affect the food quality at all.

Very Good Sandwich

By Octoboy |

Stopped in early evening on a rainy Saturday. At first we were the only ones there and I was getting nervous about our choice. The menu looked great and it took us some time to decide. As we did, others started showing up. Ended up with Apple Pork and Chicken Caesar sandwiches, refrigerator pickles, potato salad, and Salt and Pepper Tater Tots. All were very, very good and had unique flavors. I particularly liked the smoked cheese with the pork on my sandwich and the basil on the tater tots. There was a nice selection of iced teas and homemade lemonade. Dinner has table service and the waitress was attentive and friendly. I think we will return some time to try different sandwiches.

Great lunch spot

Super fresh and healthy food. Too many good choices. Quiet street so don't hesitate to sit outside on a nice day. There is parking street side so no need to walk far. Prices were great for the quality.

Perfect lunch spot

By EEMaxwell |

This is a super cute, quaint, eclectic restaurant with a ton of charm. My son (19 years old) and I had lunch here and both loved our sandwiches as we sat on the porch in the sunshine with a fresh pink rose on the table. Friendly service and unique menu. I had a squash sandwich and it was fantastic.

A gem!

By jenmking1 |

Looked up “best sandwiches” and Foodheads appeared in my Internet search. It is a quaint house-converted-to-restaurant that is so common in Austin. But the sandwich and soups offered here are not common. The combination of flavors are original and tasty. The portions are generous. While we ordered and ate our sandwiches rather quickly, Foodheads seemed like the kind of place where you could sit on the porch or at a table by a sun-filled window, sip tea and read a book from breakfast through lunch time.

It's all about the lamb and eggplant sandwich. EAT IT.

Great sandwich place

By James Londenberg |

This place was a great find. My daughter goes to UT and took me here for lunch. I got one of each sandwich just to try them all. The pastrami is amazing. The service was very friendly and they even gave us the recipe for their pickled cucumbers and onions that they serve with all their meals. If you like sandwiches you won’t be disappointed.

Terrific breakfast!

By Gloria L |

I had a potato and mushroom with cheese in corn tortillas and it was great! My friend had migas and she enjoyed them. I had heard this eatery was wonderful and it did not disappoint. The toast was also excellent bread.

A Nice Change From Normal Restaurant Eating

By Been_Here-Done_It |

I went for lunch with a friend. The sandwiches are very good and service was prompt. I actually felt like I ate the perfect amount leaving satisfied without overeating. The ciabatta bread was fresh as was the mozzarella cheese in my sandwich. The small house has outside picnic tables in the shade which provides a relaxing venue to eat. The restaurant was full but no lines at noon on a Thursday. Parking can be a little bit of a problem but I usually can find a spot for my large truck on the street just south of the restaurant. They had fresh lemonade which I like to mix half and half with fresh tea. Certainly will go back.

good, fresh food

By Carol C |

I've been here several times, most recently last week with my son and granddaughter. The food is always fresh and interesting with some daily specials. There is little indoor seating so it's best when the weather is good for outdoor eating. I had crab cakes over greens which were great.

Great For Sandwiches!

By Shellie |

This is a cool small house that has good service and delicious sandwiches! The different breads they use are fantastic. We arrived at 1:00 on a weekday and only waited a few minutes to order. There is indoor and outdoor seating. They are pet friendly here which I don't mind. However one gal had her small dog sitting on an outdoor table feeding it water and taking selfies. I believe she should have been told to take her dog off the table. I guess whomever uses the table after her won't know a dog was sitting there but still a bit disgusting.

New "Old Austin Style" Favorite!

By pjl427 |

My son and I were going to have lunch a couple weekends ago. We passed by Foodheads and decided to stop. An old house on 34th Street that used to almost back up to the old Lion's Baseball field. There are wooden windows hanging down on the wooden porch that makes it a cozy yet open space. Inside, It was comfortable, not fancy and in good taste. We were both pleasantly surprised at how good the food was.Interesting sandwiches, salads, baked goods and a variety of teas. It was a real Austin experience. (It reminded me of the original Kerby Lane Cafe before they took out the blackboard menus and filled it with wall to wall booths) I couldn't wait to take my wife to try this new place out. It is open Thursday thru Sunday nights. The atmosphere was a little warmer and vivid. We ate inside, like a large comfortable living room or den. There were interesting cookbooks and other historical books in the built in book case next to our table. It was well lit and the windows that gave it so much light during the day, looked out at t stone patio on the side with festive tables. I remember looking out and thinking what a nice place that would be to have dinner or desert when it got a little warmer. For an appetizer, I spotted the Roasted Brussels' Sprouts with Garlic Aioli. Decided to try them. We fell in love with the ones at award winning Uchiko recently. OMG! they were wonderful! My wife got the seared wild salmon on a bed of roasted vegetables seasoned with a lemon caper butter sauce. I had the Vegggie Enchiladas...I'm not a vegeterian, but the mushroom, squash, onion and red peppers topped with corn slaw and black beans on the side sounded really good. Usually, I would have ordered the pastry bread pudding with sugar cane rum sauce for desert. We asked the waitress and she recommended the chocolate sheet cake with Vanilla ice cream. We split that. A very nice way to end the meal. I have never written a review of a restaurant before. This place is special! The food is tasty, lots of fresh roasted vegetables, not over seasoned. They use real butter and the food is not greasy. We really liked it. Would I recommend it to someone. I have told many people about it. It was delicious, comfortable, and reasonable. We all plan to go back again. .

Great Lunch Stop

By Lovtorun |

We recently had lunch here on a visit to Austin. We arrived about 2 on a Saturday afternoon and the line to order food was out the door onto the porch. I heard people saying they had never seen the line so long. That being said, it was about 15 minutes wait to place our order. There are many tables indoors and on several outdoor patios as well. We sat on the front porch which was perfect. Our order was brought to us about 10 minutes after ordering. We both got sandwiches and split an order of potato salad. The sandwich also came with what they called icebox pickles which was like a cucumber salad. The potato salad was extremely flavorful. The sandwiches were served on excellent different fresh breads or rolls and the ingredients had many layers and wonderful sauces. I also liked that everything was served on reusable dishes/cups. Parking was along the side street it is located on, or they have a marked parking lot down the street. I liked everything about this from the building, the location, the food and the friendly service. It will be a return visit for sure the next time I am in Austin.

The spicy sweet potato soup is heaven!

good sandwiches and generous portions

By WeDreamOfTravel |

We stopped by for lunch on a Saturday and were very pleased with the food. They offer interesting combinations of meats, cheeses, and veggies on their salads as well as soups and salads. We ordered their beef and brie sandwich, a salami sandwich, and a pork tenderloin sandwich. All three were large enough to be a filling lunch, but the beef and brie was loaded with so much delicious beef it was nearly too fat to fit into a human mouth. All three sandwiches were tasty and it was no problem for them to omit certain sandwich ingredients that we didn't want. Considering the quality and quantity of the food, we think their prices are fair. We'll definitely stop here again next time we're in Austin.

Great place

Best atmosphere, super friendly staff. The food is amazing. Must try the scrambled eggs at breakfast andI sandwiches at dinner there.

Worth every penny

Foodheads is definitely one of the places I will bring my friends to have some dinner. Sandwiches are really delicious, soups are big, garden is lovely, service cannot be any better.

Miss the lunch rush

By lois f |

This delicious but small restaurant has delicious soup and sandwiches. The wait at lunch can be pretty long so try to come after 1pm.

Fun, eclectic place to kick back with friends! Good food too!!

By J G |

This is a must see and experience restaurant in Austin. We were there with a group of 5 for lunch and everyone loved the selections and the food. It is one of the most charming places I have ever had lunch. The decor is so unusual and comfy-could have spent hours there. You can be served on the porch or outside. Everyone was friendly who worked there which just added to the charm.

Excellent sandwiches, charming environment

By Don P |

The Fish (tilapia) torta with chimichurri was an excellent sandwich, Fish was crispy, bread was just crusty enough and just enough relish. The Fish tacos were very good, tilapia was flavorful with a standard salsa. The sides were a dill potato salad and cole slaw both were good. A pickled cucumber side is a better choice. This restaurant is in a converted house and its nicely done, the bathroom nice and very clean. The outside eating area must make this restaurant a magnet during most of the year when the weather is nice, great ambiance.

So so salads

By Lynn E |

My husband were in the Austin for a drs appointment and looked up a restaurant close by. Food heads sounded good so we stopped. Parking was difficult. We both ordered salads and I had the tortilla soup. The salads were very ordinary. The dressings didn’t have much flavor. The tortilla soup was bland. Maybe we should have gotten a sandwich. They looked better. I think that that is what they are noted for.

Unique Tasty Sandwiches

By Meredith C |

I am so glad I found FoodHeads in my search for a new lunch option. My friend and I ordered the Apple Pork and Chicken Special sandwiches. The Apple Pork had the right amount of condiments and spices to satisfy my spicy likings. I would highly recommend it. We did choose to split their peach cobbler that comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on it. Both of us were disappointed due to the lack of actual peaches in their large serving of cobbler. It was more like bread pudding and ice cream with a peach slice or two. The establishment looked clean and I loved the self service drink stations. We stayed there a while and the line sometimes went out the door. Don't let that discourage you; it's a must try!

Austin Vacation

This was the first stop during my vacation in Austin. Nice and cozy restaurant. The sandwiches are amazing and satisfying. The weather was nice and cool enough to sit outside. Great place.

Tasty and Creative

By KauaiKidd |

Really good food. Our group of four had Pastrami a sandwiches, Egg Salad sandwiches and more. Great breads, crispy prep, mouth watering flavor. This is a must try for an Austin lunch. Great homemade lemonade a and iced teas, sides are superb. We spent $50 for all four with drinks, sides, etc. Thoughtful preparation, great ingredients, real honest value. Hippy, recycle decor adds to the simple nature. Don't miss it.

Great use of feta.

By kat |

I recently ate here with my cousin & had the Chicken Special with "Grilled chicken breast on toasted telera bread with lettuce, tomato, avoado, feta cheese and tarragon mayonnaise." Umm...I loved the surprising sweetness of the tarragon mayonnaise with the kick of feta. The telera bread (which looks like a fancy bun) was a nice addition to the chicken, lettuce, tomato (and my all time fave) avocado. If this sandwich only came with a side salad, would've been a perfect afternoon Austin meal. Oo! Not to mention, they had this AMAZING coconut & almond local black tea. Like heaven literally was transformed into a beautiful southern tea. I LOVED it.

one of my favorite local lunch places!

By Becky R |

I have lived in Austin for five years now and Food Heads has grown to be my favorite lunch place to take friends and family from out-of-town for good local food! The restaurant has a small-town feel and the location is a perfect distance away from campus. Outdoor patio of peeeeerfect for sunny days! Lami sandwich is my go-to.

Great place for lunch

By DRip2014 |

somewhat hard to find the location but once there, they have a great selection of sandwiches which are done on a multigrain bread that is perfect for sandwiches. We had the pulled pork and the pastrami sandwiches which were great. The pastrami was a bit tough and the potato salad side was lacking in flavor. I would go for the cole slaw side next time. Restaurant is situated in an older home on 34th street with various mixed tables and outdoor seating as well. Parking is a bit of a problem as you have to find a parking place on 34th which runs in front of the restaurant. But, it was a good lunch choice..

Average

By MangaMan |

I probably expected too much since it came so highly recommended by friends, or perhaps I just picked a bad sandwich. The parking was tough (had to park pretty far away). The atmosphere is cool. Nice outside seating. The hot pastrami was nothing special and the bread was not to my liking. I wouldn't make a special trip here. If I'm in the area again I might give it another try, but based on this experience it's just another sandwich shop.

A two-star will make me...

By Tres C |

A two-star will make me a pariah among my hybrid-driving compats, but I just don't ever have anything more than average experience here. The portabella sandwich is pretty awesome, though.

Great food, ambience of Austin

By barbsbaby |

This is a great soup and sandwich shop, outdoor seating. The soups were delicious, had the tortilla, but the lentil and spice was great, too. Bread was fantastic. This is a 5 star Austin Sandwich shop.

Wonderful sandwishes

What a great hidden treasure in Austin. Perfect spot for a birthday lunch. The grilled chicken sandwich was wonderful. It was a little warm inside but the food made up for that. There is something for everyone, including children. Will definitely go back.

Taste of Austin College Scene

By John W |

My wife and I had a late lunch and were happily surprised with how fresh the food was. I was in the mood for something different so tried the watermelon gazpacho soup --- it was refreshing. Good portions & good service! From the outside I was immediately concerned it would not be air conditioned (yes it has a dilapidated look) but it was. I would go back again if in this part of Austin.

Worth seeking this place out!

By 88Kate919 |

I saw this place on the DINE app by Tasting Table, so we went in search of after a morning of LBJ Presidential Library. It is a good walk from there to this campus spot inna little house. The iced tea was even delicious, with tasty herbal options alongside the regular tea. The Spicy Apple Pork Tenderloin sandwich is A-MAZ-ING! The meat is marinated in some delicious concoction and it is tender and so flavorful. Husband got the tuna and loved it. I stuffed in every last bite. Wished it was closer to where we were staying, bedcuas hit was that good. go there!

Great sandwich ideas... and taste

By Tripmaker787 |

Delicious sandwiches... nice setting with indoor/outdoor seating on the porch and iced tea of course ;) Had lunch but there are also morning choices - breakfast tacos Tex-Mex style and other options. Our lunch sandwiches tasted fresh with good bread, cheese and thoughtful condiments, some made with herbs. You can design your own sandwich too or have a half sandwich with soup or salad. Pickles on the side are made in-house. The restaurant complements the popular BBQ and food truck scenes in Austin - farther north than other spots but a pleasant stop for lunch and conversation.

Nice lunch spot

Excellent and interesting sandwich choices with several home made soup options and salads. It is located in an old house with inside and outside seating. Very casual and very close to UT. Service was excellent, quick and friendly.

Cute little house with eclectic, Austintatious decor. Food is really good and innovative. Prices around $8. Fresh ingredients. Staff is very friendly and provide great service.

I saw, I went, it was great!

I use 34street to get from Guadalupe to Lamar and vice versa because there are traffic lights. Every time I drove past Foodheads it was packed so I decided to check it out. Went to lunch with a co-worker and we really liked it. They have lots of interesting sandwich combinations along with "more normal items". I had 1/2 of a chicken, eggplant, goat cheese sandwich on homemade bread. It was drizzled with a little olive oil and that was all it needed. I had a cup of Thai chicken soup with it and it was also good. Don't be put off by the Thai, it was not hot, but it was flavorful. The 1/2 sandwich was as big as a sandwich made on regular bread. I would recommend going early or after 1:00 because they are very busy at the 12:00 lunch hour. I plan to go back and try the squash sandwich. My friend had fish tacos and liked them too. For dessert we split a chocolate chip cookie that tasted homemade and the chocolate chips were still warm. It was very large so we only had one between us. I saw some cupcakes that also looked great but didn't want sugar overload so I will save that for another visit. It is pretty noisy inside but there is lots of outside seating on the porch and in the yard.

Catering is colossal!

By luvplayacar |

Need box lunches to go? This is your place!! I ordered for 45 people - they let me have 5 choices of sandwiches and salads! And they delivered it to me all nicely packed in coolers! So if you need catering - make your life easier and let them do all the work!

Great neighborhood find

By Drt600 |

A small house converted to a great little lunch place. Great soups and sandwiches. Seating both inside and out. Don't let the line scare you, it goes pretty fast.

Best Sandwich EVER.

I love Food Heads! The Chicken Special is the best sandwich I've ever had.

Great, quiet breakfast spot!

By Haley R |

Stumbled upon this place while searching for breakfast near us and this was a win. Definitely a place to check out if you're in the area and need a solid breakfast! I had a breakfast burrito which was a perfect amount of food (for me) for like $3! My guy had a scramble which was just as inexpensive and filling. Two of us for breakfast plus tea was around $18.

Innovative and fresh tasting sandwiches

By Nytex1130 |

I've been to FoodHeads twice now, but this is my first review, and I will combine laments of both. Casual sandwich place in a converted house with a spacious outdoor eating area. Inside, where I ate to stay cool, there is even a library if vintage cookbooks to page through while you wait for your meal. Your choice of drinks include two delicious herbal teas as well as more standard iced tea, and I think soft drinks. The first time I went, I had a thick and flavorful prosciutto and egg salad sandwich. It was filling and healthful, and very tasty. On a nice wheat bread that also was not at all stale. The second time, I opted for a hot sandwich, roast beef and Brie, again an innovative combination, served with home style pickle rounds. Here comes my only quibble- I like hot food to be served piping hot, and this wasn't- it was not cold or lukewarm, and I know it didn't sit on a counter because it was served very soon after we ordered., but almost seemed a gently microwaved temperature. (I should mention, you order and lay at the counter, serve yourself drinks, and then the sandwiches are carried to you). However, flavor and texture were perfect, so this is just my own quirk. Even when it get crowded, as it does near noon time, staff does not try to rush you out of there and you have plenty of time to talk with friends. I will definitely return.

This place is so cool. Great food.Good service. Cute little house near campus. Parking can be challenging. Try finding space in the alley or back street rather than on 34th.
