Great food but poor service from our waiter

By Dave H |

Food was excellent but they lose a star due to poor service. Our waiter was an older gentleman that was in the weeds and didn't appear to have the attention to detail a good waiter should have. We think he may be "family." We were sat promptly, but without menus. When our waiter asked what we would like to drink we asked if there was a wine list. He went off and got the wine list. After we received our wine he asked us if were ready to order. We replied we had no menus. And somewhere in there he brought us better with no bread. So we finally ordered. Someone else brought us bread and butter, They looked confused as we already had butter. I had an arugula salad that was tasty, but nothing fancy about it. For my entree I opted for the miso glazed Scottish salmon. The dish was very good. And for dessert we had the Crème Brûlée, Rum Euphoria, Terrine trio which was quite tasty. We noticed throughout the dinner service that other staff seemed to be picking up the slack for our waiter, not only at our table, but others. With such a competitive fine dining market in San Antonio you really can't afford to retain waitstaff that are in the weeds.

Delight your Palate!

By VPan |

Great Ambiance, with a quieter atmosphere and outstanding service. This is the restaurant that you could blissfully eat at every night. The food is absolutely divine. My husband and I took our friends there for dinner, each ordering a different meal. We, of course, tasted each other's meals and they were ALL MOUTHWATERINGLY DELICIOUS! Great location on Broadway, too, with plenty of parking in the lot. If you want to take family, friends or business associates to a great restaurant, Frederick's is a MUST DINE for you!

Birthday meal to remember

By Mistoffole |

My birthday so I got to pick the place. Picked Fredricks based on two things....previous meals here and the floating islands dessert offering. Wife and inlaws celebrated this special day and the meal was perfect. Had the ceased salad piled high with anchovies with a dish of cilantro on the side. What a great combination of salty and peppery. Beware of the small plate appetizers as they are not small but good size and extremely tasty. We shared the chicken lettuce wraps and smoked salmon....both delicious and both plates were bone empty when the waitstaff came by to pick up the plate. Entrees included pillow soft scallops, large shrimp, lamb, and Bronzini...all exceptional with veges cooked to par. Then it was dessert time and we split two which included the magnificent floating islands...gosh I enjoy that. It's a classic dessert but hard to find. Drinks were mixed as designed and it was a grand time. Will be back again.

Wonderful cuisine and service. I will definitely return.

The very best crab cakes and lobster bisque I have tasted. Wonderful attentive wait staff and management. I loved everything except for the desserts.

Decadence defined

By RPerrry |

ONE of the best meals I have ever had! had the duck wife had scallops both left us wanting more because it was so good.

We are pleased once again

By Ron W |

We had many things to do in San Antonio. We happened to be in the Frederick's area and stopped for lunch. We arrived at 12:30 and were promptly seated. The menu was presented and the waiter told us about the daily specials. We chose the Veal Piccata with a lemon caper sauce. Potato Gratin and vegetables accompanied the veal. Very good and the capers were large and tasty. We chose to split a trio for dessert and walked out very happy. We enjoy the ambiance and the service of the staff.

50th Birthday Reservation

By malenaj777 |

First... Scheduled a reservation online for my 50th birthday. Anyway, we get there. There is no sign on the restaurant. The building is dark and the entrance is on the side, hard to see. We go in to find out they lost my reservation. They said the Manager is off on Wednesday's so they didn't get the online reservation. But they have PLENTY of room. The person sits us, gets us water, and then asks... What would we like? I said a menu would be nice... He says yes, but what would you like to drink. Being the first time there, the waiter was NO HELP! After he gets us tea, he brings us a menu. Not offering any suggestions even when asked. Not giving us much time, he asks us for our order. We order and they bring out ONE (1) piece of bread!! No more! We run out of tea multiple times and are dry for over 15 minutes each time. I ordered the duck with bacon rice and the rice is mostly bacon. It sounds good in theory. But not. Honey ordered the shrimp and scallops. Scallops was slightly underdone. But otherwise good. I honestly wonder if it would have been better if the MANAGER would have been there. We will not be going back!!!! This whole thing stinks!

Amazing!

By jborozco |

This is a fantastic restaurant! Recommended by friends and we were NOT disappointed. We have a 2yr old and while he did well, I wouldn't call this necessarily "family friendly." Not because of anything they did (everyone was great!) but more because we felt bad anytime he was the least bit loud as it's a quite nice, quiet and peaceful setting inside (white linen tablecloths and roses in vases ). Would be a great date night spot. Food was tremendous. You MUST get the scallops. They are absolutely to-die for!

Charming atmosphere/superb menu- Classic French Bistro

By KathyKutler |

Frederick is one of a kind as is his charming French Bistro! He greets you as you walk in. . . The menu is wonderful with a similarity to his former ," Le Toille Restaurant. A must if you live or are staying for more than a day in S.A. ENJOY!!

Delicious

By sadrew1 |

My wife and I ate here for the first time today. I had the veal medera and she had the jumbo lump crab cake. Both were excellent. Presentation perfect. Wonderful wait staff and atmosphere.

Very good meal

By Coastal656086 |

MY fiend and I ate there for the first time. She had the halibut and I had salmon with steamed vegetables and rice. The salmon, vegetables, and the rice were delicious. We ordered one appetizer which wasn't bad. It was a brick of brie cheese and vegetables. I think I would have just preferred the chese. The prices were pretty reasonable. Of course we had lunch. I don't know about dinner. We had a cloth table cloth and napkins and real silver - perhaps it was stainliess steal. I don't remember. In any event, the food and atmosphere were very good. Our waiter was very friendly and accomodating. The restaurant is haard to find if you enter from Broadway. Easier if you enter from the back parking lot.

not that great!

By Hippocampi |

Just average. Had escargot, spring roll and oyster appetizers, nothing was mouth watering, no unique or complex flavors. Roquefort salad dressing was bland-- how do you manage that? Main course snapper baked with truffles, just tasted like heavy cream poured over fish. Wasn't bad food, but very very bland. Service was good. Won't go back, prefer other french restaurants in town...gave it a try because of good reviews, and it wasn't that great.

Wonderful Restaurant!

By Allamanda777 |

The service was fantastic, the food was impeccable. I had the Quail and foie gras, which was absolutely delicious. MH had the filet, which was also perfectly prepared and delicious. The salads were really, really good, as was the dessert! The restaurant itself was clean, linen tablecloths, romantic and run extremely well. This a "find" we will return to!

Hidden Gem

By Susieangelgirl16 |

This is our third visit here. Each time we’ve gone it has been exceptional. The service was only okay but the food was fantastic. I had the schnitzel and my friend had the shrimp. Both were specials that weren’t on the menu. Usually when you get the special it is much more expensive than the menu pricing. Not today. One of the entrees was $19 and one was $18. This was lunch but for the quality of the food it was worth it. We ordered the sampler dessert and I wouldn’t get it again but otherwise we were very satisfied. Will definitely go again. The restaurant and parking is in the back so you don’t even know it’s there but it is worth finding!

Lobster fest

By Gretchen Ruth |

Normally we go to Frederick's Bistro (and enjoy it) but were attracted back --we're on the email list-- to the Broadway location because of lobster fest. Whoa! Delightful. We both had lobster thermidor and it was absolutely delicious. Neither of us had it before and we both really enjoyed it. My husband had oysters casino and he loved them. I had the lobster bisque and as always, it was lovely. The final part of our lobster fest meal was a trio of desserts served in a cute triple-sectioned dish, and was served with the recommendation to "eat the desserts from left to right". Also, most notable -- as is the case at both of Frederick's restaurants -- is the impeccable and graceful service.

Delicious Scallops and Shrimp

By kathy r |

First, I am a frequent visitor to Frederick's and feel the food is always above average but this week i had the 'off-the-menu' scallops and shrimp which was one of the best dishes i have ever had - and I normally do not care for shrimp. It was cooked perfectly and served very attractively. I savored every bite!

Two Frederick's made our finding it a bit confusing

By Cheryl H |

We had made a reservation for the bistro in the hills outside of town without realizing there was a second location in San Antonio. Our attempts at finding the restaurant ended up at the other location. The owner was very nice and understood the situation. I would be aware of which Frederick's you reserved and make sure you have the proper address. Once there, we enjoyed the meal very much. They even brought out a seafood bisque that was not on the menu but was excellent.

Veal Chop Dinner

By Richard A |

I had a veal chop and my wife had calves liver. Both were excellent. This is our favorite place to dine in San Antonio. The atmosphere is pleasant, ambience enjoyable and the food is always outstanding.

Thanksgiving dinner at Fredericks

By STEVEN D |

We’ve come here before for Thanksgiving dinner and they serve a great meal. Their turkey plate came with all the fixings: stuffing, cranberry sauce, green beans, sweet potatoes, and mash potatoes as well as generous servings of both white and dark turkey meat. For dessert, the rum euphoria cake is a special treat. It is sponge cake covered in chocolate euphoria ganache on a bed of rum sauce sprinkled with chopped pecans and berries. Their service is fast and unobtrusive. Reservations are highly recommended during holidays because the place was full when we arrived. Also, if you’re looking for quite dining, ask if the dining room near the restaurant’s entrance is available for service.

Great for lunch, happy hour or dinner

By sanantoniotravelers |

If you are in San Antonio, and want an excellent meal where you'll find locals, not tourists, head to Frederick’s Restaurant on Broadway. It’s a bit hard to find, hidden behind a short strip shopping center near Lincoln Heights. Its subdued lighting adds to its sophisticated ambience and matches the food. Like its sister, Frederick’s Bistro, you’ll find both French and Asian influences. The happy hour is a bargain. If you go for lunch, go all out and have the lump crab meat salad. Dinner offers lots of choices, but save room for dessert. A definite splurge, but well worth it!

Almost Fancy and Almost French

By TexasRaf |

The effect is not too expensive and not too frenchy. It's high class food, presentation, and service...at affordable prices. A mean cocktail and really delicious, perfectly prepared entrees. Definitely a "go again" restaurant

Very Pleasant Experience

By Ghost |

This was my favorite meal during our visit to San Antonio. Everything from the cocktail to dessert was first-rate. I am not sure why this restaurant is described as French cuisine, as the menu leans heavily on well-made American dishes.

Very Special - Excellent Food and Experience

By 6sandy6 |

French done by the best. Exceptional experience in service and presentation and wine. Some nights a fixed price with several courses matched w wine is available. Our table of four each had a different dish and all were unique and special. You will enjoy.

Lots of ambiance, food trendy, service needs work

By Brad R |

Bills itself as French Asian fusion. In my opinion, it was light on the Asian part. Small, quiet restaurant that is great for talking and couples. Very intimate. Food very good but more trendy than french or asian. Ribs appetizers were great. Our Frederick salads were also wonderful. Deep fried spring rolls? Not! On this evening, our server was really off her game. Slow, not knowledgeable about the drink selection or the menu choices. Seemed too young and unsophisticated for a fine dining place.

Truly wonderful place!

By Capt_Wyatt |

The food is AMAZING! Try the Eggs Benedict for lunch...fabulous! This place is upper rust and the cost is high, but worth it if you don't go very often.

WOW!!!!

By Bruce D |

We just finished a first course of foisgra on grandmarnier soaked French toast and the beet salad. We are already in heaven and wanting MORE!! This place is fantastic..,,, and my wife and I are both devoted cooks and "foodies "

Delicious food and gracious staff

By travelzDenver |

So we were at our college daughter's volleyball tournament and asked for a restaurant referral. Frederick's was mentioned. When we pulled up (I was in t-shirt/jeans; husband in shorts and daughter in volleyball gear), I was doubtful we should eat there as it looked really nice. So I pull open the door and quickly closed it shut. White table clothes, candles on the tables, patrons in ties and dresses. The door opens from the inside and they invite us in. Very nice as we weren't dressed for the restaurant. We are so happy we went (and will dress appropriately next time we visit San Antonio). The food was delicious. We couldn't decide between the walnut/blue cheese salad and Frederick's salad so ordered both (easily large enough to share) and they were delicious. For entrees we had the trout, salmon and tenderloin. All outstanding. The salmon had a wonderful brown sugar glaze on it, everything tasted fantastic. We then splurged on desert enjoying the apple crepia and 3 sampler of the creme brulee, rum euphoria and chocolate terrine (they were 3 small servings - perfect). The bartender's specialty was a cosmopolitan and it was also exceptional. The help treated us well and we appreciated there making us feel welcome. We highly recommend Frederick's make reservations to be safe and a dress/collared shirt/tie would be appropriate.

RUSHED FINE CUISINE

By Jane1231 |

I would suggest you order your meal in stages. Order your entree after you have eaten your appetizer. The food is delicious with a beautiful presentation, but there was no time between courses to breathe and digest. I do not like being rushed when I am splurging on a nice meal. Their escargot and spring rolls are memorable!

French Fusion at its Finest

By Donald H |

This is one of San Antonio's finest restaurants. The seafood part of the menu is where we focus although I am sure the other half is just as good. It includes venison, duck breast, rack of lamb, and veal chops to name some of the choices. Their sea scallops were superb as was my Parmesan crusted mahi. We started with salads, she had the Caesar salad and I had the blue cheese and walnut salad. Both were excellent. They have a good wine list along with cocktails and beer. For dessert try the trio. All are excellent choices but this way you get to have a few bites of three. The wait staff is excellent and professional.

Get to Know this Excellent Small Restaurant

By TxRose75 |

For celebrations, the intimate evening dinner, or family gatherings, Frederick's Restaurant on Broadway near Basse Rd. fits the bill. And it is reasonable in it's prices as well. The specials are always delicious, and they do fish dishes the way fish should be prepared. The ambiance is much like a European dining room, rather plain but chic in it's comfortableness. No problem finding parking as the parking lot behind the building has room for all.

Amazing!!

By Dhackler30 |

We went here for thanksgiving dinner as we were visiting family. The service was fantastic and the food amazing! The traditional thanksgiving meal was perfect! We had one lamb chops, they were cooked to perfection with an amazing sauce! The KC strip steak with shrimp was also amazing!! Great place!!

NICE AMBIANCE, DELICIOUS DUCK !

By tampico1 |

Another recommendation from my friends from the San Antonio forum. Exceptionally good! Number two in my list. Had a terrific crab cake, outstanding Halibut, the duck very crispy and tasty, escargots missing something. Service could be better. But a repeat in my next trip to San Antonio.

Pretty good spot

By mudfoot |

My daughter and I enjoyed this place, Good foie gras, good fish, and good duck. Service was okay and the place pretty pricey. Decent wine choices.

Fabulous food and service!

By wukovits |

For our first visit, we were joined by my parents who have been a few times before. They raved about the food so we had high expectations for our meal. We were not disappointed. We opened with a few appetizers, sampling the steamed Vietnamese dumplings, the calamari over egg noodles, and the Brussels sprouts, and all were exceptional. They also feature escargot, something I never pass up when I find it, and accompanied with Spanish chorizo and mushrooms in a garlic butter sauce, these snails were the best I’ve had in recent memory. Sharing salads, we tried the Caesar and the Walnut and Blue Cheese and enjoyed them both. The salads were lightly dressed and quite fresh. The entrees were exceptional. Each was paired perfectly with sides that truly complimented the dish. We tried the lamb chops, the veal, the crispy duck l’orange, and the red snapper, and each was outstanding. For dessert, we dove into Le Trio, a sampling of three selections: Chocolate Terrine, Rum Euphoria, and Ginger Crème Brulee. With enough to share for a few bites, we also decided to experience the Chocolate Pecan Cake and the Sugarbuster’s, which is a sugar-free delight for anyone on a diet. Again, there was no clear winner here as all were decadent and delicious. The staff was welcoming, service exceptional, and the food was incredible. This will not be our last visit to Frederick’s.

Really, where are all these stars coming from?

By JANNETTE E |

Went for a group lunch and I must say, very disappointed. Hope my group doesn't pick this place again. Example...order a side bowl of chicken soup, it came covered in what I thought was parsley, but was a handful of cilantro. Took it off the top and underneath was 2 finger nail sized pieces of chicken, and the broth tasted like water. Couldn't even bring myself to eat rest of meal. Friend of mine did not eat hers either

Excellent

By Los Y |

Frederick Costa is one of the most cordial and accommodating individuals we have ever encountered in the restaurant business. These people have unbelievably good food, bend over backward to please their customers, and provide a quiet quaint environment in which to dine or lunch. Do not miss anything on the menu. We are frequenters and often also enjoy specials. Do not miss.

Best in San Antonio

By John W |

The best restaurant in San Antonio for fine dining. Wonderful intimate atmosphere with very attentive staff and fantastic cuisine. Pricey, but worth every penny.

Enjoyable Evening

By BluePlate-Now |

We were here for Valentine's Day dinner. The had a Prix Fixe 4 course dinner with several options on 3 of the courses. Our meals were very good. The beef tenderloin, veal tenderloin and lobster dinners were well portioned. We were pleasantly full by the end of the meal. The courses came at a good pace without much waiting. The wait staff was very attentive. The dining is small but intimate but could use some updating. Go and enjoy a meal here!

First time... but not certainly not last !!!!

By psr265 |

I was thrilled to finally have the opportunity to dine at this restaurant with my family. I had heard so many wonderful things about their past experiences- I was somewhat fearful that I might be disappointed. Well- I WAS NOT AT ALL. The entire experience was amazing- the service, the wine list, the appetizer, the special of the evening, my entree and the dessert. From start to finish- this was a dining experience to remember and I WILL return to amazing restaurant !!! I love the ambiance- quiet, romantic, and personal. This is a place for special occasions, business dinners, or family dinners... but no children !

Expected better from this expensive restaurant

By Matob |

Christmas dinner 2018: looking forward to a relaxed, laid back delicious meal in an expensive restaurant... but I was disappointed! I arrived to a cold and uninviting atmosphere, food overall good but not great, service impersonal and overly efficient - felt rushed and 'unseen'....final insult was the 20% tip attached to the bill - .not even allowed to choose! I do not expect to be back...

Excellence in San Antonio on Broadway

By GG21GG21 |

I have been going to Frederick's Bistro for the past few years because of its location. For a change I decided to revisit Fred's on Bro and was impressed by the excellent ambience, service and food! It remains an excellent choice for an elegant dining experience in San Antonio! The crab cake appetizer is a perfect choice to begin the meal. The Dover Sole is a fish rarely available in San Antonio. It was a generous portion perfectly prepared with lemon butter sauce. I suggested adding capers to the sauce which was delicious. The stir fry vegetables were great My compliments to Frederick and Mauricio for continuing their fine restaurant on Broadway!

Heavenly Entree

By orcasgal |

We were served hard crust soft bread, ordinary, but satisfying. The amount of butter served was nicely sufficient; however, the taste was not full, but rather flat of flavor. Additionally, we only had an entree each, but every bite was delicious. The special was trout, parmesean-crusted with avocado relish, vegetables and quinoa to accompany the fish. The chef had done something unique to that crust, as I have previously had that dish, and this chef's preparation was superior. If only we had room for dessert, as it must have matched. Yearn! One warning: the restaurant is hard to find unless you hunt it from the parking lot in back. The lighting was really nice.

Frederick's is consistenly excelent!

By Luis D |

Go there for Lunch, Happy Hour or Dinner Frederick's will satisfy your soul. One of the few places left where owner/operator is constantly present, greeting you at the door. Food is outstanding and ridiculously consistent. Kudos to the kitchen! Try the Flash Fried Brussels Sprouts with Asian Dressing to gauge their excellence.

My most pleasant surprise in San Antonio

By gibsor3 |

Don't let the location fool you. This restaurant is tucked in the back of a small plaza, not the most auspicious introduction, but highly unrepresentative of the cuisine. This was a treat. We were there for dinner on Easter Monday with probably only 10 other patrons. The food was great. Not only is the menu extensive and diverse, but the number of specials was mindboggling. I don't know how they manage their inventory. My wife had the Sea Bass (going against the well worn advice of not ordering fish on a monday, let alone a holiday monday) and I had the duck breast. You can tell a lot about a chef with duck. If is a binary result either great or horrible with nothing in between. This was great. My starter, escargots, was not the usual snails in garlic butter, but rather more ragout, which was well spiced, not overcooked and a nice compliment to the duck. The gaspacho that my wife tried had a very nice kick to it. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who would like to try a slighly different take on French food. A little Asian fusion with a little Tex Mex added to classic French. Small wine list but very reasonable markup on the reds. They are trying to bring you back.

Excellent food compromised by poor acoustics

By Steve S |

One boisterous table overwhelmed the relatively small dining area. Fried calamari with a spicy Thai sauce was a delicious appetizer. Both the beet salad and the Caeser well prepared with very fresh ingredients. Shrimp & scallops over mushroom risotto was delicious. Steak cooked to perfection.

A gem in a big "little" city

By Gale T |

I think the best meal we had in Texas was at Frederick's. Could be because Frederick welcomes you personally to his restaurant. Could be because the staff is so nice and attentive. But I think it's the food. Frederick's brother is the chef. I had scallops and shrimp with a Thai curry sauce. It was outstanding! I really didn't want to share it with my husband. He had lamb chops, and the kids split a lobster! Very nice presentation. And for desert - the ginger infused creme brulee just melts in your mouth. OK, all creme brulee's do, but this one had just a hint of ginger to tease your taste buds into eating more . . . delicious!!!! Finding Frederick's: People from San Antonio say they come from a small town. Local joke, the city is huge! We asked our tour guide the night before if he knew how to get to Frederick's, he had never heard of it. We told our taxi drive, he too never heard of it. It is a little hard to find, just remember it is in back of a very small shopping complex, and across the street from a mall.

I was pleased

By mblair441 |

After a long day of riding around Texas in a convertible, marveling at the bluebonnets, our cousins took us to Frederick's Bistro. Located behind the McDonald's in a shopping center, it can be a bit difficult to find. The decor is classic bistro with white tablecloths. Although the Bistro was upscale, we were casually dressed but warmly received by the owner. It was close to 9 p.m. on Friday. The place was busy but not packed. Reservations had been made only a couple of hours earlier. We were immediately seated and attended to by our waiter. Service was attentive throughout the evening with no lapses. The waiter was prompt on delivery of an excellent pinot noir, poured it correctly, and then took our orders by memory. The servers, at his direction, served everything correctly for 5 people. That is always an impressive feat. Given the varying appetites we ordered a variety of dishes. The crab cakes, which were actually an appetizer, were moist, flavorful and well prepared. As to entrees: A parmesan crusted red snapper fillet, topped with avocado was mild and light, and obviously fresh with no hint of "fishiness". The lamb chops were a rib rack chops, rare and well seasoned. I had the pork shank prepared in the style of osso buco and served over linguine. It was hearty, with a robust vegetable/tomato sauce. The pork shank was meaty and tender. If you are hungy, order this. All were excellent! The two salads on the other hand were rather non-descript, over dressed and bland. I had the mixed greens with walnuts and another in the party had one that I can't say what it was but, their comments were less than enthusiastic. We did not have dessert. Salads notwithstanding, I will give the food an overall excellent rating because I thought the entrees truly were. Prices for entrees started in the low to mid twenties and went up from there. Moderate to some, expensive to others. My cousin and I both do a great deal of "gourmet" cooking at home, and modesty aside, we are good at it. This is a place I would return to, that meets or exceeds what I can do at home. It's nice to be able to go out and get an osso buco style dish without having to spend all day preparing it.

Fine Dining

By sunsetmist59 |

Its a wonderful experience. The wait staff was wonderful! My mouth was watering reading the menu from my cell phone! The full computer brought it all to life!! If you eat here you will not be disappointed. Food made from scratch..amazing! Here is my dessert

great dinner

By Vicente |

Took wife and daughter for early dinner this week. We have eaten there before and usually has been a pleasant experience. Have no complaints. The service and Food were outstanding. The appetizers ruled!!. The oysters and the Foie grass to be repeated. The wedge salads were small, but appropriate. The lamb was plenty enough to feed 2, and the wine was very good and reasonable. Definitely will patronize ONCE AGAIN.

Excellent service, spectacular food!

By J P |

When I first went to Fredrick’s for dinner I had only eaten "real" French food once before; And so I was a little worried, but interested as well. I wanted to expand my gastronomical experiences so I decided to have the Escargot. I was pleasantly surprised! I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but what I got reminded me a lot Calamari that tasted a whole lot better. It was served out of the shell, with an incredible sauce! If you want to have a very expensive and fancy, but memorable meal, I would absolutely recommend Fredrick’s.

Worst service ever

By interiordesignmom |

We went to Frederick's for a special occasion and had the worst service I have ever had. Our waiter took forever to bring us menus, the length of time between the appetizers and the main entree that he came to the table with the dessert menus! He had forgotten to serve the entrees and was ready to move to dessert. The plates were not cleared in a timely fashion and we waited forever for the check. A complaint to the manager did not even bring an apology. I will not return!

by far the best in San Antonio

By Shirley G |

Best two places in San Antonio are Frederick's and Frederick's Bistro. Some of our favorites are the lobster bisque, Calamari, osso bucco, lamb chops, scallops, and duck breast. No one does fish better than his chefs. It is never over cooked, and the sauces are to die for. Desserts are all top notch. We love the romantic atmosphere. Frederick always makes his customers feel special as he greets them at the door both coming and going. His wait staff are very professional and accomodating.

Very Thankful :)

By MissionTrip |

This is my third Thanksgiving meal at Frederick's in Alamo Heights. The food is amazing. The service attentive and the atmosphere delightful.

Favorite San Antonio Restaurant

By Tecolutla11 |

Without a doubt, Fredrick's is my favorite restaurant! It has delicious entrees and fabulous in it's wine selection. Truly, it is a to take anyone with a like of French Cuisine.

Wonderful surprise! (except the waitress)

By Annie055 |

We went for New Years Eve for their set menu. It was recommended by friends. I wanted to go somewhere else but this was a wonderful surprise! It will now be listed as one of my favorites in San Antonio! The atmosphere was perfect ~ cozy and not loud so you can talk. For us, we were given a booth which was great & romantic. The food and presentation was excellent! The dessert list was so difficult because they all sounded great and we weren't disappointed! BUT, I can't give an excellent because of the waitress. She was friendly enough and worked hard but after our order, we rarely saw her. We were served by others (not unusual) but I had asked for a glass of wine with my entree (not a big request). I didn't get it and had to ask for it. That server told her and I watched her pour it at the bar and lay it aside. i still didn't get it. Much later she brought it over but I only had a few more bites left before the entree. Kinda ruined it for me. Who wants to guzzle the wine before moving on? I was disappointed. Then someone else took our dessert order (why couldn't she?!). LATER she came and said "I hope he told you about the one that wasn't on the menu..." and she proceeded to tell us. I would have much preferred that one but it was too late. We were never asked if we wanted coffee, etc. with dessert. A simple thing but should have been done. Of course, at that point I was finishing my wine. She just didn't seemed focused on us and it made it feel impersonal. Actually the servers were better. Maybe they have her doing too much but she needs to know that as customers, we deserve more of a personal touch. In saying all this, I would love to go back and hopefully some of the service will improve. Customers love personal touches as well as the food!

won't go back here!

By The_Savvy_Traveler85 |

We went for a special occasion. A television was on and a small child was playing a loud video game right by our table. The server was quite snobby and condescending and pretty much ignored us. This is alledgedly a French restaurant, but the menu selections were not good nor was the food well prepared. The atmosphere was more like an assisted living center than a fine restaurant. We hated it, and really know French food--this is not it. It's a clique-y place for the 09ers to see and be seen. Save your money and go elsewhere!

Superb ! amazing French cuisine !

By ClaudiaSab |

The atmosphere is very relaxed and private .There is no rush , and is not a noisy place . The service is always impeccable, perfect served the tables, the waiters are very attentive, checking for the needs of all of us . We ask always to begin one of the amazing salads, ( mainly 1 w/ blue cheese and walnuts ,the bread warm and just made is delicious . The Entree, my favorite is the Veal Strip loin w mushrooms wine sauce, and the N York strips w/ jumbo shrimps & Bearnaise Sauce absolutely impeccable and just perfect !!! The desserts are the final touch . My favorite is an apple tart warm with ice-cream , but the selection is unbeatable , Chapeau !! to Fredericks and his amazing staff

consistently excellent

By kathy r |

The food at Frederick's is consistently excellent, especially their seafood specials. The redfish yesterday was perfectly cooked, and the 'sugar buster's' chocolate mousse is the perfect ending!

Superb food and atmosphere

By Jeannie07 |

I went to Frederick's Bistro on NW Military which is a sister restaurant of the one on Broadway. It was really fabulous. Entree's might be considered a little pricey but they include a vegetable so that you are not buying a la carte sides. I had a fish entree and it arrived incredibly hot. I find it is often difficult to get fish delivered to the table still hot from the kitchen. Their sauces that accompany each entree were outstanding. The chocolate souffle is well worth the extra time. Although the restaurant was really crowded the acoustics allowed you to hear yourself think and carry on a conversation with other people at the table without shouting. Loved everything about this place.

Not "the star" it used to be...

We chose this restaurant for an office celebration, but between the decor and the service, it really made for an unremarkable (albeit pricey) luncheon. We were seated at a four top in the corner, with two of us facing walls and two facing the shoebox of a dimly-lit dining room. The food portions were tiny and expensive, and the waitress acted like she had way better things to do than check back on our table after taking our order. There's very little on the menu that seems genuinely French, but the chocolate terrine dessert is just as good as it was in the L'Etoile days. If only Frederick's present restaurant had the ambiance and service that L'Etoile used to... Sigh!

Great romantic dinner

Enjoyable evening in spite of main restaurant being taken by professional meeting. Wine list appropriate, appetizer menu a bit weak but entrees were delicious. Had the duck and wife had the rack of lamp, could not have been better. Service was excellent and restaurant mood, that even after having been moved to much less desirable location, was still quite nice. My wife has dined in the main dinning area and she loves the place..

Food excellent but service is in need of help

Food is always very good. Maybe second best in San Antonio. Service is anything but skilled.

Magnfique Food.......But Not a Smile in the House

By WindyCity2011 |

Luncheon portions are creative, original, tasty and good. This is a white tablecloth eatery. Quite busy at lunchtime. Reservations seem to be required. Very small dining area. Bar sitting area is minimum. My thought on all of this......terrific food, but the hostess and server never smiled, and when the wait person took our order, she was curt........no warmth. Server/staff were abrupt. Disappointing to be treated in such an obviously indifferent and cold manner. Very unusual for San Antonio' normally welcoming dining experiences.

Outstanding fusion cuisine

By Jim H |

After the sad demise of L'Etoile many years ago, one of the top chefs started this restaurant on his own and it's still a going concern and very popular spot. Off Broadway in the Alamo Heights central area, the location in a side street strip mall makes this a little hard to find but trust me, it's worth the effort. The menu is creative and preparation outstanding. French and Vietnamese flavors, leaning toward the French side. My favorites have been the lobster salad, beet medley with goat cheese, crab cakes, baked brie, spring rolls. The menu evolves but it's always among the top offerings in San Antonio.

Great place !!! for celebration!

Exelent meat! and good wines!! elegant place! expensive! good food!!

Not worth it.

By Brenda B |

I overheard the kitchen staff bad-mouthing some people. Then I felt ripped off when the two takeout escargot orders came to $28. On the website and the Happy Hour menu (which it was) were listed as $12 & $10 cheaper. The chorizo with escargot is not something I would eat again and especially not from this place.

Intimate, Upscale, and Pricey

This is a tiny restaurant located on Broadway that has an entry in the back. The restaurant has been located here for three decades and caters to locals with discretionary incomes. The owner is a Vietnamese from Paris and he was a cook at the iconic L'Etoile back in the 1980s. They have not upgraded the decor, and it seems a little worn. The greeter/manager was Omar and he was helpful. We ordered the lobster bisque and French onion soup to start. Somehow they got the orders confused and brought two French onion soups. My BW was hungry enough and she settled for that choice. The soup had a good flavor, and more rubbery cheese than is typical. The onions and croutons were nice. The Frederick's house salad was a good size with edamame, walnuts, hearts of palm, lettuce and onions. The dressing was light and tasty. I had the Romaine lettuce salad with blue cheese and walnuts. It was a rather small salad with average flavor. They did supply extra blue cheese crumbles. There's nothing that stands out on this lunch meal. The prices do get your attention. We should revisit here for dinner and or Happy Hour to get a better feel for this operation.

Delicious!!!!!!

Perfectly well done from top to bottom on this arrival to this special restaurant, we encountered friendly people, the owner frederick very attentive to perfection, our server omar with excelent reccomendations, the food I can't stop thinking about it, I wished I lived here so I can often go, the memorable and incredible taste and feel of this place can be long lived for the rest of the days to come, on my next visit I will bring friends and join fredericks for our next trip, hopefully sooner than later, thank you for the wonderfull service and the awsome food, specially the duck and the lamb chops that were incredibly delicious.

Fancy

Food and service was great, the dishes were thoughtfully prepared. Some of the preparation was wasted on my pedestrian palate. The atmosphere was calm and quiet allowing easy conversation. I would go back if someone else was paying for it.

We Should Go There More Often

By Jim D |

Fredericks has been an outstanding restaurant near Lincoln Heights for longer then Lincoln Heights has existed. I could be wrong about that, but if so, not by much. We had not been there for dinner in years, but go periodically for business lunches. Bonus alert: It is lobster season. We both had the 1 1/2 lb lobster Thermador. So good! Funny thing, I tried to make a reservation on Friday afternoon for that same evening. The location on Broadway is not on OpenTable.com but the NW Military location is. That location did not have anything available before 9:00 PM. I phoned the Broadway location and was able to secure a 7:00PM reservation. Young foodies were absent this gem. It was about half empty and was mostly an older customer base. If I want to wait til 9 to eat, I'll move to Houston or Dallas. This place needs to be rediscovered. Great food, great service and on a hot bright July day, I love the cool darkness of the simple décor.

Frederick Costa truly has truly elevated the food here to an art form.

Marvelous. Absolutely marvelous.

This restaurant is THE BEST. We've eaten here many time through the years and they keep getting better! Salmon was out of this world. Always a treat to visit Fredrick's.

Amazing Service, amazing food

Went for a business lunch, the service was impeccable and the food was amazing. I had scallops and they were perfectly cooked and amazingly delicious.

Really lovely old school upscale restaurant

By San Antonio member |

Took my parents here for a celebration dinner. Avoided some of the other cool newer restaurants because my father has a hearing problem and places like FEAST and Battalion get really loud. First time we had all been here in the regular restaurant area (I had been once previously for a work dinner). What a treat! Food was fantastic. Everything was really well prepared and portion sizes were surprisingly generous. Prices on main courses were not as bad as I had expected particularly given the quality and portion sizes. Service was impeccable. The staff are very well trained. We all walked out and had exactly the same thought - what a lovely old school well run restaurant. Will definitely be bringing my parents back there next time we want to treat them.

Great evening

By SAPeggy |

We had dinner with another couple and the evening could not have been more delightful. The service was the perfect mix of attentive but not hovering. The food was outstanding. I had the iconic blue cheese and walnut salad which did not disappoint. For an entree I had the flounder with shrimp special. The flounder was cooked just right and the sauce with the shrimp hit the right note of being rich without overwhelming the delicate flavor of the flounder. My dining companions were equally happy. We ended up staying way past the departure of the last diner and were not at all pressured to leave. All in all I would highly recommend this for dinner with friends (you can actually hear each other talk) or a romantic dinner for 2.

Classy service and food

Started with the escargot which was magnificent and selected the veal as recommended by our server. The veal was the best I have ever tasted and have ordered it several times since. The service was extremely helpful and we love the atmosphere.

Great experience

Great experience! Definitely high class with nice ambiance, not too large, relative quiet, tablecloths, wine settings, etc. Waitstaff exceptional, courteous and attentive. Very nice menu and wine list. We had "halibut" and "salmon" entrees. I mentioned to the waiter that I wouldn't care for a sweet sauce on the salmon and he recommended a lemon and caper sauce instead, that they would gladly substitute. Was definitely a winner and I think it should be on the menu!

Most excellent!

By Originaldemonseed |

Great service and excellent food. We have been here many times and never had a bad meal or service. We were there celebrating our daughters and my wife’s birthdays. The Chilean sea bass, beef tenderloin, scallops and shrimp special and the risotto were incredible along with the presentation.

Second Look

By Annie055 |

I reviewed this restaurant before and complained about the waitress. Well, I want to say EVERYTHING was wonderful ~ the food AND the service! Glad we went back! Our guests loved it, too, and it was their first time. A couple of weeks later we wanted to try Francesa's At Sunset at the Westin LaCanterra. Although they had a gorgeous view, the rest of the time we kept saying how we should have returned to Fredericks. Now has become definitely one of our favorite restaurants and we have lived her in San Antonio for 26 years! If it had a beautiful view it would be perfect! HOWEVER, it does have a wonderful atmosphere!

One of San Antonio's best kept secrets

By MandDwithPanache |

Had no idea this place even existed, and it's no more than 5 minutes from my house! My daughter bought me a Groupon for dinner here - and what a surprise it turned out to be. French cuisine with Asian influence in a quiet, small, intimate and romantic setting. Great atmosphere. Frederick's is elegant but not pretentious. The service is impeccable, the waiter was friendly and helpful and welcomed us as if we were long time customers. The menu is modest but varied, and there are off menu choices as well. I started with the escargot which came in a rich sauce with chorizo and mushrooms - a nice change from the traditional butter and garlic. The scallops and shrimp (not on the menu but offered by the waiter) were outstanding, in a bread and parmesan crust with a very delicate lemon better sauce. I'm glad we saved room for desert, for which we selected the trio: rum cake, chocolate mousse and ginger creme brûlée. They have a good wine list and a full bar with several signature drinks. A most enjoyable and memorable dining experience that we can definitely recommend.

Neighborhood Gem

I had noticed the sign a few times and wondering about this restaurant. We tried it for lunch yesterday and will definitely be back. It is tucked away in the back of a shopping/office complex but you feel like you are in a different world once inside. It is dark with tablecloths and very busy on a Tuesday. I had a delicious French onion soup and the Fisherman’s salad. Good portions, hot soup with great flavors.

Great, as always

By doctoryes |

At the risk of making it harder to get a reservation at Frederick's, I can recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fine meal at, what I consider, a reasonable price. This is a big-time quality local-clientele place; located in a strip center, but big city in its atmosphere, service and food. Lots of regulars from the Alamo Heights and Olmos Park areas of San Antonio. Food is always excellent, beautifully presented, and with service that is genuinely hospitable -- and they do not push you to order the most expensive wines or meals. Some dishes, in particular are great -- sea bass, asian/fusion items like special spring rolls, walnut/pear/roquefort salad.... With tax and tip you'll spend about $120 per couple for dinner with appetizers, salads and moderately priced wine.

Magnificent!!

I found this place through Groupon and decided to give it a shot. Came here with my husband and we went all out. We started with the appetizer. We had pork ribs ($12). They were very tender but a bit salty. However, I think it had to do with the soy sauce preparation that was used to marinade it. The tomato and cucumber that were neatly placed around the pork ribs balanced out the salty taste. As an entrée I had the Alaskan halibut with a pistachio sauce ($34). My husband had the catch of the day which was the red snapper with a creamy avocado sauce ($33). Both of these dishes came with a few veggies which were surprisingly delicious. Would order both of these again. Dessert: I had the chocolate terrine ($8) which was a mouse that was so delicately delicious I wish it came with more. My husband had the pecan cake ($8). If you like dark chocolate then this is for you. It was very very thick but good. We also had wine. German Schloss Vollrads (fruity white) it was amazing. Not too sweet --just right. Byron (fruity red) it was very sweet and smooth. We would come back to try something else again.

Best food in town in need of a better place to be eaten!

The escargot are the best!!! Really good cuisine, however the atmosphere isn't that good. Old fashion style! If you want a romantic place definitely you must go to Freserick's.

A Party of Four

By Ruth T |

Last evening, we had a wonderful meal for our party of four. We started with a wonderful Italian white wine. Followed with appetizers of Baked Brie & Goat Cheese in Puff Pastry & Spinach and Our Famous Crab Cake Served with Seasonal Salad & Hoisin Vinaigrette. For dinner we each ordered different meals and no one was disappointed! There was beef, pork, duck and red fish. Topped off with Rum Euphoria and Ginger Crème Brulee. The service was OUTSTANDING! This was a wonderful meal to finish our day of showing our guests downtown San Antonio and walking along the river. The best part...CLEAN RESTROOMS! I do not care if the restrooms are old. I do care if they are CLEAN! CLEAN means the servers can be clean with my food! Thank you Frederick's for a wonderful meal!

Worst Attitudes Ever.

I visited this spot for lunch because of a special deal - Living Social. I have since received an alert for another deal, but I won't be back to this establishment. I came in and was social with the owner, who greeted me at the door. He was standoffish, and treated me like I was beneath him. I dined at this man's restaurant years ago, before this one was open. It is fine if he doesn't remember every customer - but to be rude about it was unacceptable. Servers were amiable. The food was passable. I believe the lunch prices were a touch high. The escargot was NOT what I expected, and certainly should not have been called escargot, as the flavors were not at all traditional for this dish. The salad was passable at best. And eggs benedict was not hot, and the eggs and english muffin were overcooked. I don't like feeling like I am not good enough for an establishment. I know that it is French food. But my money is just as green as anyone else's. I will NOT be back.

Quite above average, but expected more.

San Antonio is not a New York, Chicago, nor San Francisco. And thus, the fine dining does not quite (yet) rival world class. However, the dining reviews for Fredrick's elevated our expectations to be exceedingly high. The building is unassuming, in the rear of a strip center; the banner of a "Lobster Fest" hung over Fredrick's for a neighboring establishment. Within, the ambiance was quiet and comfortable, small tables, white linens. My expectation was for a bit more intimate. We were seated promptly at 5:15pm. Service was efficient, and basically knowledgeable of selections and specials as expected, yet unrefined, not polished. I ordered a Merlot (there was no wine list presented, but did not ask purposefully). The house merlot was underwhelming. Our family started with an appetizer - the Foie Gras over French Toast. This dish was outstanding; but, not a favorite among teenagers. For entrees, two ordered the Fresh Healthy Poached Fish Of The Day (Cod) and alternatively, two ordered the Scallops over Risotto with Mushrooms. The Cod was not a dish to return for, while the Scallops were excellent. As the other pictures show, all dish selections were attractive in their presentation. We concluded our meal by sharing a Trio. While the dessert was good, our expectations were set for higher. Four entrees, one appetizer, two merlots, and a dessert came to $188 (including tax, without tip). We dined on the benefit of a Groupon which we very much appreciated to be honored on a Saturday. We dined among at least one San Antonio business dignitary. Frederick's definitely deserves the experience; there were dining highlights. We would consider returning for a pre-fixe meal or to try the Dover Sole over the Cod, and with expectations recalibrated.

Mediocre food, absolutely terrible service; was my 1st and very last time!

By Morad E |

My wife and I went there celebrating a recent event. We had a Groupon voucher for this place. We ordered a "Grass Fed Veal Strip Loin" and a "Miso Glazed Scottish Salmon". The food was average and definitely doesn't worth $30+ (maybe $10-$15 ?). However, the worst part was our waiter (SERVER ID 3) who lied to us about a rule that Groupon voucher holder HAVE to pay a tip of 15% of the check as a sign of gratuity (which this rule doesn't exist in the Groupon deal we bought). He forgot to bring us the remainder of our food wrapped. Once I returned back to the restaurant to ask for my food, he aggressively approached me and demanded to increase the tip. So I increased the tip (still less than 15%, but equal to my satisfaction level). After that, he came out of the restaurant chasing me into the parking lot asking to increase the tip more and repeating his lie that the rule is to pay 15%. That was the most disgusting and ridiculous behavior I have ever seen from a waiter or a waitress to chase a customer outside the premise demanding for more tip. I usually tip according to my level of satisfaction, And I think it is absolutely unacceptable to be chased and harassed by the waiters demanding more tip for the work they haven't done perfectly. This was definitely the last time I went to this restaurant because of the horrible behavior of SERVER ID 3!
