Crowds Thursday morning

By Ashlandbuck |

We ate at a table on the sidewalk. Best pancakes ever because they were light and slightly crisp on one side. Scrambled eggs and fried egg excellent, and my BLAT on sourdough was just right with plenty of greens. Professional server.

Wonderful Options for Gluten Free and Vegan dining!

By rlbtx3 |

We stopped in here for breakfast and I'm so glad we did. I ordered the All-American breakfast with potatoes and they were willing to give me the veggie sausage instead of toast as I'm eating Whole 30, and I added a side of fruit. The food was flavorful, healthy, and pretty quick too! My friend ordered the goat cheese and spinach omelet and enjoyed it too!

good place

we've been going to fuel for yrs, and did so all thru the pandemic outdoors or take out...masked up we returned for an early lunch yesterday and sat indoors for the first time since covid...we slowly took our masks off.......we each had a mimosa...next i had the tuna salad and my partner had the southwestern omelette sub fruit, plus one pandcake with real maple syrup....it was so relaxing to sit indoors again during this cold spell.............the food/drink were excellent as always....the staff is the best too...be sure to tip big during these challenging times....thx so much!

Fuel your morning with breakfast at Fuel Cafe!

By Barbara S |

This is a great, very local neighborhood eatery with excellent food and an friendly staff that really listens to their customers. The atmosphere was simple, warm, and inviting. Staff were knowledgeable and accommodated food sensitivities with attention to detail. I appreciated the fact that the fruit garnish was ORGANIC (I am one of those super-taster snobs who can actually taste the difference!) The MIGAS ($8 Soyrizo and Jalapeno scrambled in eggs with tortilla chips and Tillamook cheddar cheese. Topped with salsa, sour cream and avocado.) were outstanding, as was the Eggs Florentine, served on a tender, homemade biscuit and featuring freshly steamed spinach. The smoothie we sampled (banana, strawberry, spinach, protein boost, chocolate) was yummy and satisfying. The orange juice was freshly-squeezed and delicious. The coffee was strong, smooth, and good. We got there around 9:30 and were seated immediately, but by the time we left, there was a line. Come early. Also, there is no designated parking, so we had to park a few blocks away and walk to the restaurant. I want to sample the lunch menu here, as it sounds tasty - and if it is as good as the brunch menu items, my tummy will be happy. We'll be back and tell our friends about Fuel Cafe.

Best Breakfast in Portland

By MDChristopher |

I’m not kidding. I’ve been next door to the Tin Shed, and it’s good, no lie, but Fuel is actually better food, in my opinion, and the service was awesome. We met the owner as well and he was delightful and charming and made us feel incredibly welcome, so that plus the excellent food and service made it our regular place. Go to Fuel!

Fresh, Hot and Delicious

By PaulaSwart |

Relaxing Sunday lunch. Sitting outside watching people stroll by. I was intrigued by the bowl of quinoa served with sauteed kale, mushrooms, onions and bell peppers with a hint of pesto. It was fresh, hot and delicious.

lunch and breakfast

By mikeritchey |

Everything about Fuel was excellent, beginning and ending with the friendly and enthusiastic and expert service from Alex and Sarah (the cook, though I did not meet her/him, was outstanding). The place is clean and feels fresh. Bright, colorful flowers on the tables. And the food was fresh, tasty, expertly prepared.

Yum!

Great service and really good food. I ordered the eggs Benedict and it was really yummy. I would come here again and again.

Fun little restaurant - dissapointing meal

By Jeff P |

My wife went here for breakfast. We both had the bacon/mushroom hash. We also ordered latte's. We were told up front they were busy, so it would take a bit to get our food. The latte's came quickly, and the food shortly after. I took one bite of the hash and realized it was loaded with pepper. I knew my wife wouldn't like it, as she doesn't like spicy food. She ate about half & I didn't finish mine. Nowhere on the description of the dish did it say it was spicy. We were both disappointed. We ended up going elsewhere an hour later to get something else to eat.

tasty lunch

By Teresa M |

we came here with friends for lunch last saturday..my partner and i had a pbr, and one friend had an ipa...i had the tuna salad, my partner had the tuna salad melt, and one pancake with real maple syrup...the friends had tuna sandwich with chips and salsa, and a turkey sandwich i think ...the drinks and food were great! the server was real nice too...she said it would be 20 minutes, but after 45 min, we wondered what happened...some people had their dishes after arriving later than us...we asked if the food was coming soon....it came and was delicious...they must have forgotten the order...the server asked the owner to take 50% off for our wait...nice of them to do so....

Great local shop. Wondetdul coffee

Worth a stop in if you're in the neighborhood. Committed to coffee and with about as local a feel as it gets.

Gluten Free Delight!

By kcsdelimom |

Four of us were lucky to snag a sidewalk table for an amazing breakfast at Fuel. They have so many delicious GF options, and they were all amazing. We had the eggs Florentine, grits in the garden, loggers breakfast and the all American breakfast and each one was home made goodness! What an easy way to support a Black owned business while enjoying the best breakfast on Alberta!

The stumbles upon this place when looking for a place for breakfast. The lattes and food was perfect, and the customer service was equally perfect. LOVED LOVED LOVED it!!!!

A tasty treat while in Portland

By PV1943 |

Like a lot of people we skipped the Tin Shed when we heard about the long wait. Lucky for us Fuel Café is right next door and what a find! We went with friends who live in PDX and they now have discovered their new favorite place to take visitors. Food was delicious, coffee hot and tasty, service friendly and fast, and real maple syrup served with the pancakes. What more could you ask for? Food really does Fuel you for the day!

Healthy comfort food, great combo

By MarionVN |

I enjoyed the many food choices from waffles to omelettes to burritos and bowls. I had the vegan bowl which was delish, loaded with carrots, broccoli, spinach, beans, salsa, avocado, mmm. Service was great. Kevin is friendly and attentive. Highly recommend it.

By Teresa M |

we come here regularly, and wanted to sit outside on a warm day for brucnch/lunch in front.....kenzi was the staff person, and she was great!..we spoke of the aurora borealis..............i had a mimosa, and my partner had a irish cream coffee....next, i had the tuna salad no dressing, olives, and onions...she had the huevos rancheros and one blueberry pancake...all the food/drink was superb....kenzi was charming, quick, brought to go containers/bags since we were walking.....thx so much...

Great service and delicious food

By Kathy G |

I was very impressed with this delightful neighborhood restaurant. The service was excellent. The wait staff was friendly, efficient and helpful. The food selection was excellent. We had the Apple Pie Pancakes and the South of the Border Omelet. The pancakes were light and delicious. The omelet had lots of flavorful veggies, crispy toast and fried potatoes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I'll be bringing some more friends back, soon.

Yum! Go here instead of next door

By Kelsey S |

Such great food. Had the Belgian waffle with fruit (best strawberries I've had in a long time), and he had the biscuit breakfast sandwich. Homemade, locally made goodness. Attentive staff and cozy atmosphere...great first breakfast stop to kick off our trip.

Great breakfast experience

By pwiser |

We went here because the Tin Shed next door was packed and there was a wait. We were so glad we did, and will come here again for sure the next time we are near Alberta St. The breakfast was ample (We split an omelette) and the prices were right. Service was friendly . Excellent value

Best breakfasts

By Linda M |

A favorite if our. When in town we come have breakfast here. The food in my opinion is all natural!!!

Vegan options

By Ashlandbuck |

Breakfast spill over from Tin Shed. Food was OK, service a little curt. At least we didn't have to wait in line. It was Friday.

delicious

By Teresa M |

we hadn't been here for about a year and wanted to return. we started with a pbr and a mimosa. wish the beer was a tad colder, and that the mug was ice cold too, but it wasn't as previously noted. i had the tuna salad with kale and vinegarette, and my partner had the eggs florentine with whole wheat bread underneath. she also ordered one choc chip/blueberry pancake with real maple syrup. all the food was delicious. one other passing observation is that the tuna salad could contain more than kale for greens. some other lettuce would be more diverse, plus celery would add to it. it did have tomato, cucumber, onion, and olives. the server was very friendly and efficient. thx

Unorganized service

By lebeech876 |

Poor organization of greeting and seating potential customers. Waitresses were clueless that there was a waitlist outside, Upon entry there were 2 available tables which could have sat people who were waiting outside. I expressed to her that it was our first time visiting this restaurant, and her reply was very unwelcoming and negative. First impressions go a far way, and I do not recommend going to this restaurantz

Cute place, standard food.

By travelmore2day |

Nice little place for breakfast or lunch. We found our breakfast potatoes a bit on the hard side, but other than that the food was good. Nothing super special, but friendly staff and standard fare. The place next door (Tin Shed) was amazing. Smoothies looked good.

Good food faster

By Josh T |

Like a few others we checked out Fuel due to long lines nearby. The coffee was great, the food unique and tasty (apple pie pancakes and vegetarian biscuits and gravy) and the service was on point. Heck even the bathroom is fun (check it out)!

The food is better than the building looks.

By Dilla |

The food was delicious! They have indoor and outdoor seating. I would probably sit outside next time. There was a spider coming down from the window A/C next to our table. But I would definitely go back. The staff was super friendly and did I say the food was delicious? They are local and get local ingredients as much as they can.

What a surprise!

By Ghostrider5408 |

There was a power outage causing a regular breakfast place to be late opening and had remembered seeing Fuel which was open, no brainier there. What was a surprise to us is exactly how really good the food is. It is truly fresh made from scratch, and damn good. Looking at the menu I had a feeling about the pancakes and oh so right. If your having a craving for real homemade pancakes there are none better in Portland, at least that I know about. Service is excellent coffee strong and hot just like I like it. A new favorite for us.

Vegan Disappointment

By JasperMarks |

I really wanted to like Fuel. Very cute, understated cafe nice enough to send out postcards offering 2:1 breakfast. The wait staff was pleasant and efficient, the music was at a pleasant volume, and the small eating space seemed clean and cared for. Unfortunately, the vegan breakfast scramble that both my wife and I ordered was nothing short of awful. Yuk! I don't know what the dominate spice is that they are using (perhaps curry?), but there was so much of it that it completely overpowered every other flavor; and, both my wife and I had a "gag" reaction on our first bite. It wasn't until we both smothered (and I mean smothered) the scramble in hot sauce that it came even close to being edible. The potatoes were fine and the bread was decent. I liked the jam as it didn't seem to have too much sugar. I was kind of shocked that they charged my wife $2 extra for a single piece of gluten-free toast. Keep in mind that toast is included in the price ... so they are effectively saying that her single piece of toast cost as much as a regular piece of toast plus $2 more. Seriously? It pains me to write such a negative review of such a cute, well-meaning cafe ... but the truth is the truth.

Start your day here while on Alberta Street or ANYWHERE in Portland area!!

By Beverly G |

A quiet, clean, wonderful atmosphere to start your day. Foods are top notch made to order and wonderful staff makes you want to keep on coming back to visit. Eggs to order, jalapeno cheese grits to die for, great breakfast meats, iced flavored teas, good coffee choices, great biscuits, homemade jams, .... the list goes on and on. Pets are welcome on the patio just outside. Parking right on the street or nearby. This meal will fuel you up to shop, browse and buy while on Albert Street. Experience it all !! Can't sit down and eat, then use Uber to pick up for you!

Favorite lunch spot!

By rseghers |

I recently moved to Portland. I work on Alberta St and the restaurant gives me a discount. The service has been above average every time I visit. The staff are friendly and go above and beyond to meet customer needs. Food is ready fast and everything on the menu tastes exceptionally good. Highly recommend!

Great cafe, delicious breakfast and gluten free friendly

By Belle W |

Welcome spot to hang out and have coffee and breakfast with the fam. Coloring on the kids menus was a hit, along with the waffles as big as their heads with strawberries and fresh whipped cream. They had good bacon too and the coffee kept coming from super friendly staff. Would totally come back.

Not impressed

By Erik M |

Went for breakfast, I had their special huevos rancheros that had no chorizo and had a huge pile of undercooked onions. My wife tried to have the other special, chocolate chip and banana pancakes but they were out of bananas already. Also, it was a chilly morning, both doors were open, the window AC unit was running as was a very large ceiling fan. We asked the waitress if we could at least turn down the fan and she said no, it felt good to the staff. Sub-par food and service, especially when right next door to places like To She'd and Proud Mary. We will not go back.

Fabulous breakfast,friendly stagg

By Purrfect |

Had a great breakfast... Belgian waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. We also tried the pancake special with Apple sauce and granola. Coffee was good, service was friendly and fast. Ate outside on nice sunny day.

well-served

By aflowing |

Came here for breakfast & coffee recently to find a clean, artsy little place, jam-packed with nice folks on a Sunday. Mostly adults, the ambiance was very friendly & mellow over all. The coffee was superb, fresh-ground & delicious. And the home fries done just right & quite delicious - the wheat toast & poached eggs were also. Except for the waiting list & lack of parking, everything was ideal, so I recommend to get there early if you're going there for breakfast or brunch.

YUUUUUM!

By Sara D |

We had intended to go to the restaurant next door, but with over an hour wait, we ended up at Fuel...and we're so glad we did! I first want to acknowledge our tall, thin, blonde waitress (never got a name). She was amazingly efficient - greeting customers at the door, making phone calls to tell them their tables were ready, taking orders, delivering food, clearing table, etc - all without appearing to put forth any effort or getting flustered in the least. She was really great. Our food was so, so good. The eggs benedict is in my top 3 all time fave benedicts with homemade (or at least it tasted that way) english muffins. My husband loved his breakfast burrito and we all RAVED over the pancakes and decided they would have even been delicious without any syrup or butter. What puts this place over the top for me is that they serve real maple syrup! You don't find that too often in restaurants! If we're ever in Portland again, we'll be back!

Filling and tasty

By Jan V |

I had the smoothie and a side of potatoes because we were riding our bikes from and back to Vancouver and I didn't want to eat a ton. Still, I couldn't eat all the potatoes and took them home to my very happy husband. Generous and tasty and great with the smoothie. My friends ordered the meals and all looked delicious. I was especially eyeing that Grits in the Garden. I WILL RETURN!

Great breakfast surprise!

By CMW97301 |

We were going to a restaurant on the other corner and were told we would have 1 1/2 to 2 hour wait for breakfast. We decided to pass and walked to the corner and spotted Fuel! We were seating a a community table, given water and fresh coffee immediately. We started to look at the menu and wow - great breakfast election. We both opted for Classic Eggs Benedict, one order over easy and one over medium - they NAILED it!! The food was delicious and the service was great! AND only $11

Nice cup of coffee

By TeriS372 |

I can't speak to the food, but we popped in because the wait was a long one for Tin Shed and it was pouring rain. The staff were very nice, and efficient, and my breve was delicious and huge. Well made. My husband liked his smoothie which was in a frosted mug. It was full of people but didn't seem rushed.

Why wait next door?

By Wyndwhystle |

After a leisurely walk through Irvington and up to the Alberta District we were ready for brunch. We walked by Fuel and saw some amazing food being served to people in a window table. The was a large group waiting for seating at the Tin Shed so we took a Uturn back to fuel and were glad we did. We were told that there was. 15 minute wait for a table inside, but we could be seated immediately if we wanted an outside table. The restaurant was busy so they we a little slow getting back to take our order after promptly bringing water to start, but food was too us very quickly. My wife had soyrizo migas, a tasty dish with tortillas scrambled in with eggs, cheese and the vegetarian sausage. I had a special for the day, pesto eggs scrambled with fresh greens and sprinkled with feta cheese. It was nice to have so any vegetarian options, and to have them be so delicious. being seated outside also afforded the opportunity to talk with passerby and pet some friendly neighborhood dogs. We will be back.

9am on a Sunday, friendly, yummy, fun, not crowded (yet)

By I8-0-H-ZL7 |

I'm a fan of "brunch" on Sunday, but so many others are, too, that it's become impossible to eat without a wait during "breakfast-lunch" hours, say, 10:30 to 2. So lately I'm trying an alternative: eat earlier and allow for a nap in the afternoon. I seek out places with 8-12 thoughtful breakfast offerings in a middle price range. I don't need sweets or a ton of carbs: I want an omelet with interesting filling, steamy oatmeal with character, yogurt from a dairy, homemade granola, French toast with some added twist, perhaps with thick bacon or fresh fruit on the side. Fuel is one of those places. Plus the location of Fuel on Alberta St., Portland, is ideal for those who really enjoy the walk-your-neighborhood experience. It's hip, it's laid-back. It's why Portland is a foodie city. Fuel contributes to the reputation for great food and comfy ambiance with its windowed location on a corner.

Good for lunch

By tleeEvans |

Found this nice smaller restaurant while visiting Portland. Seems they are popular for their breakfast but they also have a lot of good items on the menu for lunch. During the pandemic they are doing both inside and outside serving and take out. We ate outside and tried the lemon hibiscus ice tea. I ordered the walnut and seasonal vegetable salad with the creamy vinaigrette dressing. The salad greens were very fresh and the dressing was excellent. My husband got the hamburger and was very impressed. This is worth a visit. Very good with very fresh ingredients

Something For Everyone

By MaryBee2011 |

The food was great, waffles for the kids, vegan for me and meat and eggs for hubby. We love the vibe and the service was spot on. We love that they use mostly organic ingredients. We’ll be back!

Great brunch option in a fun neighborhood!

By summerjMA |

They have an expansive menu with lots of great daily brunch specials. They only have a beer and wine license, but their mimosas are DELICIOUS, and they've created an interesting beer-based take on a bloody mary. The restaurant can get VERY crowded around brunch time, but there are lots of shops nearby to poke around in while you wait. The seating is a little tight, but you can still have a great time hanging out with your friends and family.

Racist Service

By Marina V |

I would like the owner of this cafe to be aware of its RACIST employee. Employee kicked out my group of 3 at 12:56pm on a weekday and said that they are closing (they don’t close until 2 or 3pm). The employee was white, approximately 20-25 years old, brownish/blonde hair. She made inappropriate jokes to my POC coworkers, and was very hostile during our whole interaction. This restaurant is NOT a safe space for POC. Very very disappointed.

Waffle Benedict? Yes please!

By Tws |

Omg. Delicious AF. Hollandaise was used sparingly, bacon and poached eggs were cooked to perfection, and waffle was light and fluffy. This is the perfect combo of sweet/savory I’m always craving for brunch. Ordered the grits but sampled the potatoes off my spouse’s plate and potatoes win by a large margin (grits always sound better than they actually taste). Wait time for the table was long (typical Saturday morning) and it took forever to get the food. Luckily we weren’t in a rush. Servers were friendly and helpful with suggestions. Will come back again.

love fuel

By Teresa M |

we did some sledding in the snow, and came back for lunch...we began with a pbr..next, i had the tuna salad, and my partner had the i heart vegan bowl with a cup of tomato soup...everything was wonderful and the staff are so friendly...thx so much....

Relaxing and taste breakfast

By Teet4 |

the minute we walked into Fuel we calm and welcomed. Although it wasn't full when we went in, it quickly filled up. Holds around 35 people so try to get there by 9 am on Sundays anyway. Their grits were wonderful and my eggs were cooked to perfection. Nothing was over cooked or undercooked. We would definitely visit this place again next time we are in Portland.

Cozy Cafe

By Tys0n2 |

We wandered in because the wait at Tin Shed was long, and it was crowded. It was warm and cozy, offering breakfast and lunch. We had the classic chicken burrito, and it was very good. Our waitress was extremely nice and welcoming. Enjoyed it very much.

Brunch Stop

By Bridges73 |

Second time I've been here and was not disappointed either time. Consistent food, friendly staff, nice location (especially if the waiting list at Tin She'd is a mile long). Love their biscuits!

Delicious and different, but not too different!

By Karen H |

We came across this friendly and fun restaurant while exploring the Alberta Arts neighborhood of Portland Or. The menu was unique but surprisingly home-ish at the same time. The food was top notch, using the most fresh and delightful ingredients. The staff were accomodating and friendly and made us feel right at home. They stopped by for a chat from time to time, even though they were quite busy. Once the crowd died down the owner came and answered some questions for us about the ingredients and preparation. I am not a writer of food critic articles but if I were I would definitely write that the food was fresh, creative and delicious. I loved that my chicken breast was not processed in anyway prior to grilling. The spinach and basil pesto was perfect atop the chicken breast between lightly grilled sourdough. The potato salad was freshly prepared with some unique flavor combinations. The decor was simple, and stylish, very clean and appealing. My son had a sunmosa which had a uniqueness to it. It was made with sparkling wine, jasmine lemonade with blueberries which floating up to the top then down to the bottom and up again! It was a work of art and delicious!

Nice place

By Cheese_Taco |

This place is small, as are many things in Portland, however we were able to be seated immediately with a party of 6. I had the biscuits and gravy which were absolutely amazing! I also ordered the largest hot chocolate which came in a giant coffee mug with loads of whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. It's a nice little spot, it was snowing and we were able to see outside it was suck a nice treat. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. If you are looking for a nice place to rest and relax with some friends this is definitely it. We were not in a hurry so if that is your intention I cannot provide feedback to that aspect of the restaurant about that.

love it

By Teresa M |

we returned to fuel for lunch....we each began with a pbr, and i had the tuna salad, and my partner had the vegan pesto bowl with soyrizo...they ran out of soyrizo, so she had the tofu, and the server /chef/owner didn't charge her...how nice....everything was grand, tasty, cozy, and the server is the best!

Breakfast

By Oregon |

Great breakfast in a cozy place with friendly staff and good people watching. Reasonably priced meals

Local fav

By Rachael V |

Always great food. Always hoppin; frequently 10+ min wait before seating available. Breakfast and lunch served during all open hours. Great smoothies. Fantastic benedicts. Good sandwiches. Good daily specials. My go-to is the 'grits in the garden'. Order a specialty coffee instead of drip. Many vegan and gluten-free options available. Support this local, Black-owned small business!

Great staff and vegan options!

By KatherineLovesCats |

I loved this place so much I had to write a review here and on Yelp.com. The staff is so friendly and inviting, especially Daniel, our server. My vegan food was amazing and I'll be coming back soon!

Excellent Gluten-Free Vegetarian/Vegan Options

By HrhRKS |

Their gluten-free biscuits are amazing! I enjoyed my order of Grits in the Garden with a gluten-free biscuit on the side.

Winner by default!!

By Mike L |

My wife googled "best breakfast in Portland" and decided we should check it out. So we went and found a waiting line outside with us as 10th on the waiting list. I suggested we try the cafe on the opposite corner (with no waiting line). What an incredible "find". We were seated promptly and our server was very friendly and helpful. My wife ordered a mocha latte that came in a cup as big as her head. The server apologized for taking so long. It seems that they had run out of whipped cream and had to whip together a FRESH batch. Most of which found its way on the top of latte she served my wife. Since it was nearly lunch time I ordered the grilled 3 cheese with pesto sourdough bread sandwich. I was also wanting soup which happened to be a homemade Tomato Bisque special of the day. Are you kidding me? Tomato soup and grilled cheese? It was awesome. My wife had a 3 egg omelette with pepper jack cheese, roasted peppers, sautéed red onions and avocado accompanied with jalapeño grits. The flavors blended together for a one of a kind breakfast experience. We could not have been happier to end up at Fuel Cafe by default. What a lucky break!

Amazing experience

By Natalia A |

Initially we came to Alberta to have brunch at Tin Shed, but the line was 2 hours wait. So we just went to Fuel, next door. We got a table outside in 5 minutes! The service was just amazing. The menu its pretty rich, breakfast and lunch. Mimosas only 3$. We will definitely will come back.

Interesting upcoming area of Portland

By Dotty M |

We also stumbled upon this gem when the Tin Shed had a long wait. The food was good. I had the eggs florentine and my friend had a eggs with gluten free toast. Both were pretty good. Cute cafe decor, friendly staff.

Suddenly swamped yet still good

By Wallawallaeater |

We were looking for breakfast for seven people -including three teenagers- along NE Alberta and hit two places with long lines when we decided to give Fuel a try. No sooner were we seated when the nearly empty cafe get flooded with diners. The place went from three diners to PACKED. We had to wait nearly 40 minutes for all the food to roll out. And when it did, it came in two or three things. One of our diners waited the full 40 mins for his meal -pancakes. The staff were very apologetic and took several items off the bill. Could not have done a better job of keeping their heads level and positive. Made a difficult situation much nicer. The food, as it arrived, was BOUNTEOUS for sure. No one left hungry and most took boxes away. Tasty, tasty, tasty! I has the Migas and it was unusual with the soy based product. Terrific flavors. Everyone was happy with their orders. They kept the coffee coming and the water glasses full. Nice job. Small place with big flavors and a great way of managing the sudden deluge of large parties.

Pure deliciousness!

By ERG0716 |

In a town where everyone is so 'ultra' about food....it was so comforting to have a delicious breakfast in such a sweet place. No pretense! No artifice! I enjoyed the Eggs Florentine and ordered a side of very fresh fruit. Next time ( and there will be a next time), I'm going to go for the jalapeño cheese grits or perhaps the biscuits! Southern comfort food. Everyone in my party enjoyed their breakfast, the tastefully decorated room and the great music. The owner, Kevin, was our server. He really serves up great food and a delicious latte!

Excellent!!!!

By Mike-EdwinaGray |

We stayed close by in an AirBNB and we were looking for a nice quaint place for breakfast so we pulled up Yelp and they were near by so we decided to try it. I had the "Greens in the Garden"...I think that's what it was called...it was cooked Kale with Mushrooms over their signature Jalapeno grits with an egg on top and a hollandaise sauce ...absolutely fricken delicious. It was like a party in my mouth. The wife had on of their omelets and it was delicious too. This was the perfect place for what we were looking for. The gentleman that helped us was very helpful and offered us excellent service. Highly recommended.

My favorite breakfast/brunch spot in the neighborhood

By Rachael V |

I know that's saying a lot, so I'll qualify: I don't wait in lines. I don't like overpriced average food. I like to have a good number of options and some daily specials available. I like friendly staff. Fuel hits all these points!!!

excellent and fun

By Teresa M |

we returned to fuel for lunch...i had a pbr, and my partner had a sunmimosa....i had the tuna salad with balsamic, and she had the i heart vegan bowl with tofu, and one pancake with real maple syrup...we love fuel, it's food, staff, and cozy atmosphere..thx again

Absolutely loved our brunch here. We waited about 15 minutes. Our food came quickly and was absolutely wonderful. Highly recommend!

Two mornings in a row at this Alberta St restaurant and coffee spot. Delicious! Love the roast, and the care with which our drinks were made.

Went for brunch, had eggs benedict florentine, perfectly rendered, hollandaise good, homemade biscuits delightful change from english muffins. Spinach was fresh, not frozen. Wait staff good.

My first bad review

By Chris W |

I'm the kind of person that would rather leave no review at all instead of a bad one. But our service today was some of the worst I've had in a long time. We were seated right away and or server took our order almost immediately. Then we waited almost 45 minutes to get our food. We weren't the only ones. We counted three other tables that asked where their orders were. When the food finally arrived my eggs were over cooked and had paprika on them. The menu said nothing about paprika and personally, I think it's kind of gross. I was too hungry to say anything so I ate the over cooked, oddly seasoned eggs. My wife and I were both supposed to have biscuits with our meal but they didn't bring them. When we could finally get a server's attention we asked and she brought out a plate with cold, somewhat stale biscuits. It seemed like the cooks had put them out with the other food, but they weren't brought out. So by the time we got them they weren't even warm enough to melt the butter. All in all the food wasn't even that good. Bland honestly. Only reason I'm not giving one star is because the staff was super friendly in spite of not really having a handle on the business. Judging by their other reviews this is probably a unique experience so try at your own risk.

Great breakfast!

We came here for breakfast after the wait nearby at The Tin Shed was way too long. So glad we did! The food was AMAZING! Huge portions, tasty coffee & great service. A little on the pricey side but everything is organic and/or made in house. Everything was very fresh & worth the price!

great food

we had a decafe coffee, veggie burger with salad, and eggs florentine...my partner had a side of bacon too. the food was delicious, the server efficient and friendly. the ambiance is relaxed and the bar window view superb with all the snow. only complaint is too much kale in the side salad...would have enjoyed more lettuce mixed in.thx

Need Fuel to keep going?

We stumbled upon Fuel by accident because the restaurant we were going to had a 45 minute wait. Fuel was wonderful! The staff was warm and receptive and the food was simply wonderful. We were there for breakfast on a Sunday morning and the wait was only 15 minutes. Everything about Fuel was great! We will definitely be back!!!

Not what we expected

I like the location of this restaurant but my wife had a very poor experience with her food and ice tea that looked like water with ice cubes. She did go off menu as if you look at the internet menu, it says BLTA sandwich is still there. They made it but did not toast the bread and the potato salad was worst than the Fred Meyer deli version. I have to say that my house salad was excellent but that alone cannot overcome the experience. It looks like a good place for coffee and they offer free wi-fi. As with any review, I try to favor the business if possible but in this case, I cannot give 3 stars. We will not be returning.

ordered food to go

during covid 19, we called fuel cafe and ordered some food to go yesterday for lunch...i had the tuna salad no dressing, onions, olives, and my partner had the tuna salad, add soyrizo...the food was waiting for us and we tipped bigger than normal, as these little cafes are trying hard to remain open during this period..everything looked so good, and was excellent! we wish you the best of luck.....thx so much, we'll be back!

Exceeded expectations

I live in Chicago - I was in Portland for an ersatz family reunion......we needed a quick place a group from my family could meet & eat last minute before heading to the airport. We chose FUEL. Everyone was extremely happy with the dishes they chose. I recommend the French Toast. Server Kevin was over the top accommodating.

Meant to go next door, but with 45 minute wait there, decided to walk next door to Fuel. Very pleasant staff, great food and coffee (4 shot decaf American, yum!). Great vegetarian bowls with add in choices. Definitely recommend!

Great service- loved our waitress Brittney. The food was good to. The bacon Benedict was out of this world. We will be returning. I highly recommend this place. Ask for Brittney when you try this place. Thank you Fuel!

delectable

we've been wanting to come here for lunch, and finally did. we began with 2 pbr's in frosted mugs, and they hit the spot. we had the wild salmon salad and sustainable tuna salad, and both were splendid. the fish on both were tasty, and the greens were varied, fresh, and plentiful. the vinegarette dressing on the tuna was delectable, and the honey mustard based dressing on the salmon worked very well. capers, cucumber, among other additions made both dishes a fine choice. the server was very friendly and asked questions in the back, if she didn't know the answer. very efficient too.

Great menu

We also wandered in here because the line at the nearby Tin Shed was very long. It was Sunday at 3pm and we were really hungry so tried out Fuel Cafe. The menu had a lot of options for the vegan and vegetarian in our group. We ordered the pesto bowl and the vegan bowl, both were delicious but especially the pesto. Another person in our party was very happy with his blueberry pancakes. The homemade lemonade and the lemon hibiscus tea were also good. We thought the wait time for our food was a bit long, given that the cafe was not full. Our server was ok, but less than enthusiastic. Still, I recommend Fuel Cafe.

Just Plain Good

This is a pretty basic eatery with fun music a lively staff and earnest eats. I usually get pretty long winded with my reviews, but Fuel is so down to earth that too many words seem inappropriate. Portland is a city full of great breakfasts and Fuel is one of them.

The food is delicious ! The atmosphere is chilled and cosy. Cool place to go for breakfast. Not expensive for great quality.

Straighforward, quality breakfast

We enjoyed a breakfast with our family here and had great, friendly service and high quality breakfasts. Pretty straightforward stuff, but good coffee, and a cozy place to eat.
