Good meal but I’m tired of sneaky surcharges.

By MarshalltownMan |

Unusual food that is tasty with an impressive variety. Funky atmosphere. I’m reducing to 4 star due to 2% “employee benefit” surcharge. I’m sick of restaurants sneaking in extra charges at the end in order to keep menu prices lower. It’s shady and deceptive.

Good food, inauthentic decor

By RM |

The food was good. The server helped my husband with his selection (he has food sensitivities). There was parking available. But some of the "art" in the bathroom was certainly not authentic or Indonesian. Why would the owner chose such inauthentic salacious art? I have no idea, but it detracted from the experience. The art near our table (music focused) also had nothing to do with Indonesia.

Great dinner

By NicoleD |

Wow! Really delicious. The chef has created some fantastic dishes. We ate family style and split multiple smaller and larger plates. The server had some suggestions that were spot on. All of the staff were friendly, professional, & knowledgable. The dishes were wonderfully flavorful. Atmosphere was relaxed & comfortable.

Asian fusion

The parking lot can be very tight at popular times for dinner. The food was delicious, very different types of Malaysia spicy. The carrot curry was delicious. And the rang tang beef was good. The rock fish was good.

Surprise ending

By Tom C |

I went with several friends for the Singapore crab offered at this restaurant. Two of us have traveled in Singapore. We were excited to have the crab. When the dish arrived it was 1 Dungeness crab, drowning in a chilly pepper sauce on 3 lbs. of rice noodles. The staff said that the dish serves 2-3 people. I estimated 1 crab per person is required to satisfy 1 person. The dish that was served would work for 3 people if the group filled up on noodles. But the price is over the top for noodles and 1 Dungeness crab (currently $9.99/lbs. at local markets). The side dishes we added were nicely done and interesting. The cocktails were well done. The staff served attentively as expected. The atmosphere is a mix of diner booths, tables, outdoor/indoor picnic tables. For those whom had Singapore crab In Singapore this version is over the top expensive. The surprise ending came on the bill stating a junk fee charge for staff Covid relief. The fee was not a joke. Yet, the owner is laughing at us for paying it. Many customers work very hard too. Maybe customers should start charging businesses with arrival fees.

5 star for food and good value, vegetarian dishes.

We tried a variety of dishes, 3 people. All were worth a return visit. 5 stars. Lindsey was a great waitress. Never been here before, better than average Asian food and we like Asian.

Friendly neighborhood smiles

By ZenDark30 |

Friendly neighborhood smiles and service. Dishes a twist on traditional Indonesio cuisine-plentiful and spicy. Would have liked to see a broader menu including Nasi Goreng, and gado gado. Nice atmosphere with tight tables. We’ll be back!

My Favorite Spot in Portland

I've been to Gado Gado twice now and it's my absolute favorite restaurant in Portland. The flavors are incredible and no matter what new menu items they come up with it's always delicious.

Indonesia Meets Stumptown

By Anthony E |

My wife and I fell in love with Indonesian/Malay food in Southeast Asia years ago. Gado Gado does roti (flatbread) as well as many places in Kuala Lumpur, and they riff on it by adding a side of dipping goodness that contains creamed corn. I thought it was nuts, but it was GENIUS.

Great mix of flavors

Kitschy and excellent food. The whole crab was amazing. Spicy! Filling out the 100 character minimum now!!!!

Do yourself a favor

You need to try this place. A true food experience without the pretense. God I hate small plate restaurants that flaunt their Chefs, and you're supposed to appreciate the gift of their artistry, not! well you won't get any of that here. the dishes are out of this world creative and the flavors explode on your tongue , no pretense, no oversell, just extraordinarily good food in a casual easy environment. The wine list could use some work, only two choices, but come here for the food, Next time I think were going to have to go for the full Monte, (rice table) but what a great time we had, wish I lived in Portland! btw, the beef cheek? rocks! the place is packed, don't come without a reservation, and yes we had to wait anyway, but without asking, they comped usb the first round of drinks! No one does that anymore, and more restaurants should!! Thank you Gado GAdo for a wonderful evening, no rush, no pressure, just good food and perfect service.

Fourth of July in your mouth

Folks, this place is gonna take off and it already is. It’s packed Saturday night with foodies and chefs in Portland because this place is off the hook and about ready to become one of Portland’s hot joints. The dishes are multi flavor layered that hits the high notes on your pallet. If All Indonesia was as good as this representation I would move their tomorrow. Well done chefs...well done.

Flavors galore

By Patrick C |

Four of us went early on a Friday night. Ordered a variety of dishes including the asparagus/pea green curry, shrimp shumai and the papaya soft shell crab salad. Everything was FABULOUS. The service was attentive as well. Highly recommended

Whoa Nelly, a lotta great food

By Press-on-regardless |

Wonderful food in a strip mall restaurant with a fun vibe. First thing you notice is the turntable up front spinning classic vinyl. Then you grab a menu and you don't know what half the dishes are, but they sound interesting. We ordered the $55 per person tasting menu. (Everyone at the table has to order that to get it.) We were used to small plates with tasting menus at other restaurants - not so at Gado Gado, They bring out bowl and plate after bowl and plate of amazing Indonesian dishes. Some hot and spicy, some more delicately flavored. I don't know how many we got for sure. More than a dozen. We were stuff and happy. Some were from the menu and some were things the chefs felt like making. One of us is gluten free and another has a severe allergy to berries. They made sure all of the dishes could be eaten by every one. These are good people who make great food. They also have some delicious alcohol free drinks, which we appreciated. We couldn't eat everything from every bowl and plate but they were happy to box up all the extras. Yum.

Best Tasting Menu In Portland

By Cassie L |

Parking can be tough but is worth it. The rice table tasting menu is the most fun food experience in Portland. Amazing food, so many courses, and they made for great left overs. I recommend adding the jello shots with boba balls to start. They're very socially conscious. I loved that they required proof of vaccination and had an extra 2% charge to help pay for any covid-19 related sick time for their staff.

Many sauces, All good.

Had the main breakfast dish and shared with a friend. We did order several extras. It looked lovely in the tray and all was tasty. No disappointments. Service very good.

Complex deliciousness!

By cocokac |

Blown away by the complex and delicious dishes! I will have dreams about the eggplant dish and bread with tomato sauce. So very good!

Excellent flavors, interesting presentations, but pricey.

A group of us enjoyed sharing quite a few items with real delight at the flavors. I think we all felt the portions should be bigger for the prices or the prices should be lower.

Wonderful meal, Interesting experience

By flip52024 |

We celebrated an anniversary with friends by having the Gado Gado Rice Table, a family style feast with the table covered with wonderful tasty dishes, including curries, shrimp chips and charred onion dip and a variety of interesting sambals (sauces). The food was plentiful. The feast ended with a light coconut poundcake with strawberries and black sesame cream. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. Will definitely return!

Excellent and expensive.

We went there for dinner with another couple. We got the $55 per person set course. The number of dishes brought out to our table were too many for me to keep track of. All of the food was excellent. We really enjoyed the experience.

The food here is delicious

By Eyedoc88 |

The food here is delicious and spicy. Every dish was memorable and unique. Reminds me of Pok Pok but less pretentious. I especially loved the roti appetizer and the beef cheeks.

Disappointed

By Heidi S |

It was good, but definitely not great. Over-hyped IMO. There was nothing that would bring me back again. And pretty costly.

Gourmet Indonesian Family Restaurant

By John Carter |

At Gado Gado, you will find creative Indonesian delights at very reasonable prices. We especially emjoyed the bay sallop crudo and the pea - asparagus - mushroom curry. However, it is not a romantic restaurant, if that's what you are looking for. The staff and vibe of the place is more family style restaurant.
