we got this restaurant recommendation from our Milanese friend as the only authentic Italian place in Portland... so we thought we tried it out... and it didn't disappoint! I got the house made pasta special of the day and i could just go back fro that same dish over and over!!! we go the Salumi app and it was a good portion and very very good, Olives were fresh and to die for! I will be coming back and strongly recommend this place! great wine list too :)

Legitimately one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever experienced in the US. I have lived in Italy and my husband is Italian and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our dinner. The wine selection is varied and thoughtfully curated. We enjoyed a bottle of Sardinian Carignano which is a rare find in the states. The prices are more than reasonable. We had a lovely locally sourced steak that melted in the mouth for $32. Bread is homemade fresh TWICE daily and the meat and cheeses were top quality If you’re looking for AUTHENTIC Italian in Portland, look no further. Nero Gallo has it all; great food, prices, staff, atmosphere and we will most definitely be back. *some photos I took after I already started eating!

Went here based on TA reviews and it didn't dissapoint. Expect a liesurely meal as the service is somewhat slow, but friendly. Wine list is very extensive with some good "finds" on it at reasonable pricing. Would return.

Small Italian eatery at the corner. Hard to find it as the sign was subtle (Look for outside umbrella). Creative foods and moderate portion. Casual but sophiscated. As it is small, better to make reservation as it seems to fill quickly.

I may have a new favorite Italian restaurant in town! This is a great little place serving mostly Tuscan dishes, the food was well prepared and presented and the service was excellent with only a minor lapse which was corrected. The wine list has an excellent selection of Italian wines with Chiantis heavily represented, as the restaurant's name would suggest. Particularly welcome is a decent selection of wines by the glass. As another reviewer pointed out, it can be quite noisy. It is a small space and you may be seated close to an exuberant party!

We came upon this wonderful little Italian restaurant after a mid-day play at the Armory. It was mid-afternoon and many restaurants in the area were closed. We were welcomed right in at Gallo Nero. Food, wine, and hospitality were excellent. If there is a better small, family run Italian restaurant in Portland, I haven't found it. Highly recommended.

Ate lunch here on 2/12/15 with a friend and food critic/reviewer. Fantastic sole over spinach and fungi risotto. Started with yummy pate with capers on toasted italian bread. We let the server choose wines and we're not disappointed. Finished with homemade biscotti and vin santo and chocolate and cognac! Have already booked a return adventure!

Our family of four was hungry and tired, trudging back to our hotel from a day of shopping in downtown Portland and a long wait at Voodoo Doughnuts. We were desperately trying to find a place to eat, and also desperately trying to get out of the little area where Voodoo is located...lots of strip clubs and sketchy places to eat, so we weren't keen on staying there long! As we made our way back to our hotel in the Pearl district (refraining from gorging on the voodoo and slightly regretting not stopping at Killerz Burgers) we stumbled across the Trattoria Gallo Nero. It is small but very quaint and intimate, and it suited us perfectly! The food was absolutely delicious, the staff wonderful, attentive, and entertaining. We enjoyed ourselves immensely, and felt extremely fortunate to stumble upon this true "pearl" in the Pearl District!

Not sure what it is with some restaurants but this one left me empty literally. There with a group and I do not think that anyone was impressed by the food. Chicken that was only just cooked. Wine was ordinary, service was so so.

With some colleagues we decided to try Gallo Nero. We're Italian tired from American food after some days here. The restaurant is small but you may find immediately Italian ingredients near the door. Simple but good the appetisers. Fresh made pasta and good desserts. Good service. To be suggested

Anniversary dinner for our daughter and son in law. Menu was fabulous, presentation very nice. Tried the lamb, steak and scallops. They were pretty good except I couldn't chew my steak. It was too tough. The pasta was decent. The vegetables and salad were excellent. I would go vegetarian if I ever go back.

After returning from a six-week tour of Italy I found Trattoria Gallo Nero to be just about as authentic as anything I had in Italy. Although, I have found Italian food in the United States that I actually liked better than what I found in Italy oh, this place does a good job representing the Italian style of Florence. The ravioli was stuffed with marscapone and pears and served with fresh sage and butter. The other sauteed with butter and pancetta. Both house-made pastas I tried were delicious. They just were a little undercooked by my standards. The ravioli was exceptionally chewy. The two samples of bruschetta I ordered, the mushroom and the stracciatella oh, we're sure with an olive ciabatta bread. The salty bitterness of the olive was a real tongue treat. I thought it was a great choice of flavors Lasagna is where they fell off the mark. Again, made with fresh house-made pasta, it featured a slow-simmered Bolognese layered with Bechamel. The bechamel sauce must not have had much binder in it as it seemed to have been assimilated into the surrounding pasta leaving no trace of itself. The bolognese sauce I had the distinct flavor of scorched tomato. I don't know if this was intentional or whether somebody just screwed up this batch. But, I found it kind of unpleasant. The real Triumph was the soul sauteed in butter and lemon. Perfect texture Absolutely Fresh tasting. Some of the best fish I've had recently. There's a few more items on the menu I think I'd like to try. Head on down and try a few yourself.

First off the food was excellent. Borlotti beans and the pasta polpo were great. Even did Gluten free for my guest. However I felt like we were eating family style with the whole restaurant as there was barely 12 inches between tables. The service was a bit slow as well. But enjoyed a 3 hour dinner so I guess we weren’t in a hurry to get out.

Gallo Nero March 9, 2024. My wife and I flew to Portland, OR. to visit some sights and look at a house to buy. We stayed at the Hampton Inn Pearl district, hotel across the street from this Italian restaurant. We entered the establishment and were met by one of the rudest, most disrespectful hostess we have ever met. She first asked if we had reservations, and we did not. The restaurant had about 90% of the tables open. I said we will have a couple of drinks while we wait. She very rudely stated that if we want to drink, to go down the street to a bar. She stated that not once but three times.

Great place for a romantic dinner or a fun night out with friends. The variety of foods and wine is outstanding. We visited Italy a couple years ago and we love how the food here is authentic, not Americanized like so many other Italian Restaurants. Service was excellent and we really enjoyed the pace at which they brought the food out. They allow enough time for you to enjoy your food and let it settle before bringing out the next course. Make sure you save enough room for dessert because you're in for a real treat and their espresso is outstanding. Plan on about 2 - 2 1/2 hours from start to finish and enjoy the food, service and atmosphere.

I made a reservation on open table and received an email confirmation. I also called to confirm the week before. When we arrived there was no reservation. An Italian speaking gentleman was extremely rude, no apology and acted as if it was our fault. When we questioned the table he was offering (cold and by the door) he said "well I guess you will just have to leave". Several tables remained open the entire time we were there. Finally, our salad course did not arrive and this was not noticed until they were bringing out the main course. The food was okay but was tainted by the attitude of the place. They need to remember a few customer service principles; the customer is always right and an apology is very helpful. We eat out a lot and I have never written a negative review. There are so many wonderful Italian restaurants in this city and I would not waste my money on this place.

Beautiful day, cute patio, lovely looking food, people watching. "Let's have lunch and a glass of wine." Bad decision. Service here was disorganized at best and lackadaisical at worst. The wine came eight minutes after the entrees - but only because I asked about it. And the food was OK, but very meager for the amount charged. I think it could be a good place to go if anyone there really cared about making it good - but we won't chance it again.

Unique and exquisite menu, exceptional staff and they use tablecoths! Seriously, one of my favorite restaurants in Portland!

he rudest and most unprofessional service that we have had in many, many years. Our server, who seemed to be the owner or at least related to the owner, was grumpy to say the least. The food was not hot enough when it was brought to the table and it was probably plated in very cold plates. Five minutes into the meal the food was plain cold and it did not taste good anymore. The garlic was not peeled, the shrimp was not deveined and not peeled, the portions were small, the staff members did not make eye contact with us except for the grouchy server. We were the only customers in the restaurant, so they were not too busy to offer decent customer service. Needless to say, we will never be back.

A quiet, cozy, intimate setting with soft lighting and wonderful atmosphere. We had an absolutely exquisite meal. Our pasta dishes were 'magnifico!' and the Chianti wine was a perfect selection to complement our meal. Tiramisu was light and decadent. Service was exceptional in every way. Great find of a restaurant, one which we will likely return to when we travel to Portland.

Met friends for lunch at this lovely little restaurant in the Pearl. We were greeted by a friendly server and given our choice of table, since we were early. The menus is small, but varied. We ordered three salads, two pasta dishes and minestrone soup. I had the rice salad, tuna, olives, canelinni beans and a lite olive oil. Very good, light and fresh. The soup was obviously home made with vegetables and a good broth. The pasta, with calamari, was divine. This is truly how you would eat in a cafe in Italy. We will definitely go back for dinner.

Fresh light Italian. Sat outside on a sunny day and really enjoyed the antipasti. Great wine selection. Good service.

Beautiful dinner while visiting Portland. Enjoyed our dinner. Check out the pictures. Great wine selection and service was fantastic. Best Italian I’ve had in some time. Highly recommend!

We went for a dinner at Gallo Nero after our trip to Italy and was very surprised be the quality of food,

Small and very quiet on ground floor corner of a condo building in the Pearl Kitchen prepares slowly and with care, everything from pasta to beans to pate' done to excellence. Quiet and well worth it, chef makes his own lemoncello

We ate here last night after just stumbling across it on our walk around Portland. My partner and I shared everything - a salumi platter which was the standout of the night, a caprese salad, home made pasta in a creamy sauce with pancetta and porcini (the most authentic Tuscan food I've had outside of Tuscany) and pork cutlets in a cognac sauce. The flavours were all lovely, the staff attentive - and they didn't mind us sitting on the menu deciding one dish at a time, and the wine list was completely Italian. A great little find, and good value at just over $100 including 4 wines by the glass.

If you look really closely at the menu, decor, and seating arrangement. It's clear that the goal is to maximize profits and not produce quality food. With high prices and small portions you'd expect something similar to the Le Pigeon or Toro Bravo experience of elevated, creative, sometimes sublime experience - instead you get basic Italian fare, that is better done at simpler hole in the wall places, than in a cramped, loud dining room. Compare the layout of this place to Q, for example. You never feel like you're weaving between crowded tables there. But unfortunately Gallo Nero took the low road, focused on profits, delivered an uninspired menu, at high prices, in a crowded loud environment. For good high end Italian go elsewhere.

Gallo Nero is what I would call proper Italian food not (I’m sorry for saying this American Italian food ) the essentially Toscana food with a salute to amazing local ingredients makes this restaurant a perfect combination simplicity executed perfectly. A first class largely Italian wine list adds to the experience. When in Portland don’t miss this place

Had an experience last night that has never happened to me before. Heard good things about this place so decided to try it and the food was good. It was a Tuesday night and restaurant not very busy but service was slow and they forgot to fire the Risotto so it came out 10 minutes after the other meals. We also ordered two Caprese salads that never did make it to us but were on the bill. I asked the waitress to remove them from the bill and a few minutes later the manager came to our table and says he will remove them but "You ate the salads". I asked why would we lie about $20 worth of salads on a $200 dinner bill and again he says "You ate the salads" this time raising his voice loud enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear and then finishes it with "And never come back here again" My wife is still in shock.

Loved the arugula prosciutto pasta dish...here at lunch, no crowfs, nice ambiance, city views, came here on recommendation of a native postal carrier...

I think a three and a half star rating would be more accurate, but my family and I recently did enjoy a lovely meal here. With a few easy tweaks, this place could be great. Ambiance was much better than photos suggest, being warm and cozy, but spacious enough. Menu was very interesting and we all had a had time deciding on what to order, however menus that were presented were paper, and looked as though they had been around a long time. Dingy and dirty, which left me a bit annoyed. Quite an unnecessary bad first impression. Starters were really enjoyed, an interesting saugage and cheese on toasted bread was good, a fantastic meat and cheese plate with interesting tasty cheeses and fresh authentic Italian meats - it was a large portion and every morsel was enjoyed. The photo of the dish has already been posted here and doesnt justice to the wonderful plate we were served. A real letdown was the chicken liver pate on toast. Pate is one of my favorite things, but this was the most disappointing version I have ever had. No flavor at all, and to make matters worse, it was pre-spread on very thick toasted bread. The bread did not suit the pate AT ALL. No coheshion whatsoever. bleh. The real wow of the starters was a fresh burrata with tomato jam - OMG - we were all completely wowed by this dish. The cheese was so fresh and delicate and the tomato jam was more like chopped tomatoes, but with a sweet tinge to them... wow...we were all trying to figure out excatly how the "jam" was prepared. We were kind of fighting over this dish - it was great. We all had pasta as our main course, and they were all well prepared, but not quite great. I had pasta with pancetta and cheese.. it was very nicely prepared, properly aldente, but the pancetta wasnt as tasty as it could have been, and I felt the dish needed a ton more cheese. My niece choose tortellini stuffed with potatos which sounded soooo good. it was ok, but not as wow as I had wanted it to be. Another dish we ordered was a special, and it was delicious pasta with shrimp and kale in a vodka sauce. I hadnt choose this because I could take or leave vodka sauce, but this was nothing like what you would think - it was barely there (how pasta should be) and just really tasty. Desserts were good, nothing to write home about.. For me, the service was bad. Our server was very nice, but so many little things that make good service were non existant. - ie - my wine glass sat empty as my dinner was served and I was not offered another glass, no fresh black pepper or grated cheese was offered when pasta was served...bithday girl was served the wrong dessert, and the correct one did not come out straight away - she sat ages without it. We had spoken of an italian treat of bread dipped in sugar and wine, and the server promised to bring us sugar with our bread - she never did. All these little things make a huge difference, and I think the owners of this place would do well if they educated thier servers on proper service. My relatives from Portland werent bothered by the service; perhaps we have higher standands on the East coast? :) That being said, I wouldnt hesitate to go back to this place next time I am in town.

This is a delightful, very small and comfortable restaurant. The first requirement for a great meal, of course, is great food and ours was just that. The menu offers a variety of dishes. Our two salads were creative, delicious, and nicely presented. My pasta was very tasty and my wife said the same about her seafood dish. The service was excellent, the staff knowledgable and eager to offer suggestions to meet any special dietary needs or requirements. The wine list was surprisingly long with a particularly excellent variety of Italian wines at reasonable prices. We will certainly return on our next visit to Portland.

This is a little gem of a Trattoria with a very good chef! We met friends for lunch at Gallo Nero on Memorial Day and from beginning to end the service, drink and food were fantastic. The staff was accomdating with us as we wanted to take our time with each course. We never felt rushed and had a long and leisurely lunch. We will be back!

Stopped in for a light bight to eat and altho everyone was friendly the meal was not what the previous reviews indicated. Everything was was too garlicky and in my view that is not the sign of finely prepared dining. The garlic should be obvious and subtle and not lingering like this was even into the next morning. I had a bowl of supposedly soup (their ribolitta) which was just a bowl of mashed bread with a few beans and vegetables stuck in there..no broth at all. The bruschetta we had was described with kale and beans, again it was very oily and garlicky with beans thrown on top with a few pieces of kale. It would have been a much nicer presentation to have a bean puree so the beans didn't fall off everytime you took a bite.

Have been looking for fresh and light Italian food for a long time and finally found here at Callo Nero. Small place (not many tables) but it quickly filled between 5:30 and 6:00. Appetizer of Funghi bruschetti was amazing, the deep, earthy flavors of the mushroom practically melted on the crunchy toast. My penne with prosciutto, garlic, arugula and cream was heavenl; full flavored with a light touch of cream. Partner's borlotti beans with garlic, rosemary, tomato sauce and sausages was hearty and filling but not heavy. Superior wine selection; server recommended a delightfully light, smooth blended red that perfectly matched the pasta. Three servers were a whirlwind of activity, keeping in touch with all customers.

Enjoyed our service and wine at Gallo Nero. Sat inside with three rather noisy groups. Good service except we poured our own wine. Food was great, wonderful, and poor. The anti pasta was great but only green olives. The choice of paste (2) was wonderful but small portion. The fruit de mar was poor at best. The pasta was good but it was really was spaghetti. Some of the sea food was almost raw. The portion size was small.

Went for dinner last evening.........food was good, albeit excellent pasta was well prepared and flavorful but cold. Service was OK, not overly attentive. I like the atmosphere but as per previous reviews it was very loud

Splendid dinner tonight at Gallo Nero, had the “filetto alla chiantigiana” as main and a bottle of Tuscan red classic … awesome job from the kitchen and the “sala” staff… you can’t simply go wrong there, excellent overall

Authentic, delicious, friendly... a decidedly delightful experience. The fegatini (chicken liver, caper, anchovy pâté) alone was worth the visit.

I visited them for the first time when on a business trip. I stopped in one night for a glass of wine and watched as they brought out the most amazing looking dishes. The wine was superb and the staff was very knowledgeable about the selections. As I sat and smelled the meals coming out of the kitchen I decided that even though I wasn't very hungry I'd go ahead and order an appetizer. It was phenomenal. Davide, the owner, has a talent for creating dishes that enhance the flavors without overwhelming the taste buds. After that I was a regular any time I was in town. On my most recent visit I ate there every night, and had the same special 3 out of 4 nights because who could pass on the painted hills beef with black truffles? LOL On the fourth night Davide encouraged me to have something new which was also great :) The venue is nice with indoor or patio seating, and a few spots at the bar if you're just stopping in for wine and a chat with one of the friendly bartenders. It accommodates small parties or large groups. One of my recent visits included clients, 11 of us in total, and they were very happy to discover this place which was a short walk from the office. I can't wait to bring my husband with me on my next trip so he can see what all the fuss is about.

What a wonderful restaurant! Shoutout to the very friendly waitress and Davide the owner who made me feel at home. The food is definitely legit, and they had a good selection of Italian wines. I was happy to find some proper pasta that was al dente, delicious! The tiramisù was really good too. Definitely going back!

We weren't expecting to be wowed after having had ravioli in Nice, France earlier this year (apparently that's where the dish was invented and it was indescribably good). Well, Gallo Nero's potato filled ravioli compares quite favourably. I would have gone back the. Next day for more if we could have! We also had the pasta with prosciutto and pecorino which was excellent. Their wine list is good, too. A local told us this was the best place for Italian food in town. We would certainly go back.

Arrived on time, eating early due to the need to drive down the Valley. Wait person was noticeably chilly when we did not buy wine (she upsold the people next door on buying a bottle instead of by the glass) and was not a good server - example, pushy about wanting to take certain plates off the table before we were finished - maybe they did not have enough of the size we were using as bread plates. Slow to bring things requested like water, for pete's sake, and later on the check. The food -- ala carte meaning over priced since you have to buy everything separately - not a parsley piece on the plate - was just plain bad. Spouse had a 3 pasta sampler - 2 were mediocre and the 3rd inedible. Adult with us had chicken scallopini but they did not bother to flatten the chicken breast, had no capers, mushrooms, or vermouth, and the wine sauce was wimpy. Hard to find a recipe that prepares it the way they did claiming it was authentic. I had fish stew which made me enormously ill, causing too much time in the bathroom last night and today. I suspect the white fish was going bad but covered up by the smell of fish stew. They did not bother to peel the shrimp so you had to struggle to get the legs and shells off (not just the tail) getting stew all over your hands and didn't bother to peel the garlic so when you had the misfortune of taking a bite of stew and getting the garlic, you got a mouthful of garlic skin. Nothing to wipe up with and the bowl for shells was too small. We eat out a LOT and most often Italian - Portland has many great Italian restaurants. This is not one of them.

Surprised to find this authentic Italian restaurant in the Pearl District. Our family gathering filled about half of this quaint restaurant - which suited us perfectly. Loved the tasting menu. Good value and showcased the food. The ravioli with butter and sage was to die for and desserts were tasty. We enjoyed sneaking bites off each other's plates and all agreed that this restaurant was a hit. Can't wait to go back to try more.

We visited Trattoria Gallo Nero last Saturday with my soon-to-be college graduate daughter. We started with a combination of two bruscheta - Americano and Al Sugo. They were both very good and nicely presented. We had three entrees - Tagliatelle al sugo, Scaloppine, and a pasta combination (Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare and Strozzapreti, Prosciutto e Rucola). They were all very good, but the Strozzapreti stood out. It had fresh pasta sauteed with prosciutto, garlic, arugula and mascarpone cheese. So yummi! We ended the evening with a slice of tiramisu, which was light and very tasty. An excellent meal all around.

If Chef Davide is there. Ask him to make something not in the Menu. But it has to be when it's slow. Like between noon and dinner rush. Don't tell him I said so. I can live in that place. Great wines. Everything is fresh and from scratch. He doesn't know what chicken Stock is.

My wife and daughter ate dinner at the restaurant before attending theatre nearby, and raved about the food and service.I felt compelled to return and enjoy the food. What a mistake,as good as the previous dinner was that was as bad as dinner last night. The only positive was the melon and prosciutto appetizer.I ordered the halibut special, my wife and friends each ordered a pasta dish. Bear in mind the restaurant was hardly busy, all our respective main courses were served cold. In addition, the fish special was anything but special. In fact it was tasteless and in no way resembled the menu description. The server, who was professional, noticed my displeasure, said he would inform the Chef. You would think the owner who was in house would come over to our table and apologize,no all he did was hide in the corner and try to be invisible. In retrospect, no wonder the place was not busy during the dinner hour.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. It does not disappoint. The selections are consistently terrific and the service is the same. I have never had a bad meal. Want escape to Tuscany for a couple hours??? Now you know where to go.

Had family agathering. Italian server and staff made it fun. Food very good, fair prices and good wines

We have passed by this restaurants many times and stopped in for lunch today - it was an unfortunate mistake. The grilled shrimp on my salad were spoiled - I noticed a prior review mentioned the same issue with this seafood. The two pasta dishes were mediocre at best and the the pasta for both was undercooked. Our waiter was quite pleasant but she was the only one responsible for all of the tables in the entire restaurant. All around this was a most disappointing dining experience and we have no plans to return.

We took our parents here for a Sunday lunch. The six of us ordered Various dishes with the intention to share. The wait staff had no problem with that and even graciously offered to replace our plates twice. The food is really good. We tried their Bruscetta mixto with choice of the tomato, porcini and gorgonzola walnut, all were delicious. We read about the mixed review of the Strozzapreti being too chewy, but we thoroughly enjoyed it and think this is the way it suppose to be. The special of the day crab and shrimp salad and a wild boar pasta were also excellent. The rest of the dishes were satisfying as well. Overall the restaurant exceeded our expectation and we definitely think it is among the best Italian restaurants in town.

Our second visit to Gallo Nero, and we will return. We were seated promptly at our reservation time on a Saturday night (a rarity for the Pearl). There have a very nice menu and excellent wine selections. Food was tasty and service excellent.

We had a lovely dinner at Gallo Nero. We were welcomed as soon as we walked through the door; all the staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and wine choices. Our meals were delicious and not your typical italian restaurant standard fare (altho the menu has those types of choices). I had the pasta al polpo (fettucini with Spanish octopus - it was excellent) and my husband equally enjoyed his paparadelle with rabbit sugo. The torta della Nonna, a lemon tart, was a perfect way to end the meal. Gallo Nero is easy to find in the Pearl District, and easy walk from the downtown hotels. Try it - you'll like it!

Decent food. Not so good waitstaff. TINY portions!!! Charged $3.50 for bread, then brought it after the meal was finished. Won't be back; there are much better choices in The Pearl. Try Piazza Italia!

Great Italian restaurant in the Pearl District. Fabulous dishes with great variety. The $35 four course fixed price menu is a nice choice. Friendly, low key service. Some outdoor seating.

He showed up again. Two tables away, bull-horn voice, and one could hear this jerk from the street. Big shot! Owns a Lamborghini, (bought it for his wife and gets all the action he wants), wants an automatic rifle next week, loves Brandy and wonders why 3 guests at his table had to leave early. Ruins everybody's dinner. Crostini Polenta, 4 generous wedges $10.00, tasty but was served cold and wasn't grilled as advertised. Prosciutto Pasta $14.00 was very, very good. Rich, creamy and delicious. Crab salad $14.00 was skimpy and was served with no dressing. $12.00 per glass for house red was ok, but the value wasn't there. Service was very good and included an apology for the jerk-off at the other table.

The food was very good and I would recommend if you are near by. We were in the hotel across the street so it was very convenient. The waiter was very nice and food was pretty. The portion sizes were smaller, but it ended up being plenty of food. Don’t expect to take home a doggie bag.

Gallo Nero is truly one of the most authentic Italian restaurants in the NW. I've been to Florence several times and assure you the food is on par with some of their very best restaurants. Contrary to other comments our service was also outstanding-- welcoming, attentive, and friendly. Highly recommended.

Over price for what you get. Food is ok, but not for the prices. If you can go to another Italian Rest, do it. I personally not going back to this one again, I have gone to better ones that is for sure and the prices are better. Is too bad they charge so much for the food, Service was not even that great, young italian guy (maybe owner) not having much of experience with customers.

If you want to enjoy a quiet meal alone or with friends & family this is the place. The menu is similar to what you'll find in the restaurants of Florence. Simple and delicious. We started our meal with an assortment of bruchetta. Next came an amazing pasta with prosciutto, gorgonzola and cream. For an entree we had beef steaka with black truffle. OMG....we finished with a affrogato for dessert that sent us over the moon. Don't miss this perla of Portland.

Gallo Nero is a rather intimate Italian restaurant in the Pearl District. I guess by Italian standards the food is good, I did not like my meal, and it was not up to standards of Italian restaurants here in my home town of Palm Desert. The service was good, ambiance ok, somewhat pricey for what you get.

Gallo Nero is well-located in the Pearl. We thoroughly enjoyed the food: roasted vegetables, pasta with beans, risotto with mushrooms, and lasagna. All pasta is made daily in-house. The bottle of Puglia wine was decent and reasonably priced. Portions were on small side, ambient noise made conversation difficult (concrete floor, wall of glass, high ceiling, many hard surfaces), and waitstaff was indifferent--did not seem pleased to see us, did not ask how our meal was, very little interaction.

Went here based on online reviews and menu. It's authentic Italian if you like rude older staff, warm soda and white wine and poor service. The pasta was excellent but the older man (owner?) was serving the tables with a scowl on his face. I ordered a coke and he tossed a warm can on the table. I asked for ice and he was not happy but brought me a glass with about 5 cubes in it. Really? Portions are small but the pasta if very good. Miss on the value for the price. Won't rush back.

Had lunch here. Service was mediocre. Our server refused to offer any recommendations (everything we have is good) and was impatient with questions about particular menu items even though the restaurant was quite empty. The eggplant parmigiana (our server had an oddly sarcastic tone when he pointed out that "it is a salad") is quite good. An appetizer described as "sauteed dry Italian porcini mushroom" turns out to be bruschetta with a rather stingy amount of porcinis. The crispy polenta was fine though came out so fast and is so perfectly cut that it definitely seemed like it was made well in advance. Pasta was fine but portions are quite small. This restaurant wasn't bad, but each aspect fell short of being better than average.

We enjoyed our meal at Gallo Nero. The food was excellent as was the friendly service. We recommend this restaurant for a good Italian meal in a very pleasant environment.

This small restaurant serves Italian food that skirts the traditional Americanized versions for more unique and flavorful dishes. For example, there is the Livornese dish Cacciucco instead of Cioppino, and it was beautifully prepared with the fish cooked perfectly instead of the often over-cooked seafood stew. The menu has something for almost anyone, including gluten free options. Local fish and produce are used whenever available. It took a bit to get a server, but once we did the service was good. Food arrived hot or chilled, as appropriate. Our Tonno sale was superb, with tuna, beans, capers and olives. Highly recommend!

In Portland for a funeral and gathered all the family together on Saturday evening for a dinner at Gallo Nero. Had a few appetizers on the table for starters: Caprese a Modo/ Gamberi/ Parmigiana de Melanzane. All were delicious. Main course menus varied: Strozapretti, prosciutto e rucola was the biggest hit; followed by Tagliatelle al Sugo. All was accompanied by a bottle of Italian white wine on the recommendation of our fabulous server, as well as a bottle of Vino Nobile de Montepulciano. Great place for dinner--highly recommend.

From a thin NY Italian, the food preparation was good but the portions were small. The Caprese a Modo Nostro was delicious. The attention and service were at best barely acceptable. Adding insult to injury, was finding that after having to request bread, which is a staple to an Italian meal, delivered without oil, requiring us to hunt down a server, was finding a $4.00 charge for six or seven slices of bread.

Light and tasty pasta with "fruit of the sea." Try a pasta sampler so you get to taste 2 of the pasta dishes. The service was impeccable.

We have had dinner at this restaruant at least 5 times during the past 3 months. We have taken very well traveled friends who are avid restaurant goers to this bistro. All of our visits to the Bistro have been delightful, with well prepared Italian entrees and wine. Excellent wine list. We invited another couple who had not been here, and they were very impressed. Our friend is fluent in French and Italian. Our waiter was Italian and our friend enjoyed speaking with him in Italian. He ordered in Italian, including our selections to be translated. Needless to say, it was a wonderful experience, and all our selections were perfectly prepared. Highly recommend this bistro, for it's menu, the ambiance, and the attentive service. Brunch offering. Excellent wine list, and a true bistro experience. Hours: 11:00 am - 10:00 pm Highly recommend.

This Italian restaurant is an absolute gem. Had dinner with my husband and his best friend and all dishes ordered were beautifully presented and delicious. I highly recommend this place. The staff friendly, helpful, and fun!

Up front, I'll admit that I didn't go to this restaurant personally, but the story that I heard compels me to write this review. Some very good, fairly well-to-do Guatemalan friends of ours took their family there recently. The father is a head chef at a well know local Portland area restaurant and they make it a habit to go out together and sample other restaurants fares and service. When they walked in, he noticed the manager or owner roll his eyes back and could hear him speaking in Italian (which my friend understands as Spanish is his native language) and telling the server to seat "the Mexicans" over in a corner, out-of-the-way table. She apparently objected, telling him that it was only 4 o'clock and there were plenty of seats in the main dining area. He insisted, so she was forced to put them in the awkward location anyway. I can't comment on how they found the food other than to say they told me they thought it was good, but ultimately the family spent over $300 dollars there on appetizers, entrees, wine, etc. On their way out, the same man who had the server seat them told them in a very friendly manner to come back anytime and our friend, the chef, said OK but told him next time he wanted to reserve "that table" and pointed out to one in the main dining area. The manager responded "any table you want" (apparently because they spent money and didn't up being what he assumed "Mexican" to be. Thought they indicated the server provided exceptional, pleasant and professional service, I would never go here simply because of the racist, judgmental attitude of the individual in charge here, whoever he was, and I complemented our friends for being seated even after they were confronted with such prejudice.

The first thing you hear walking into Gallo Nero is Italian. For somebody who goes to Italy often, it was almost surreal to find a place like this in Portland, OR. The food was authentic - fresh, rich, flavorful and well-presented. First time I've seen Pici (a homemade pasta, served with pecorino and pancetta) in the U.S. An excellent meal. Incredible value for the money - I have often paid over twice as much for Italian half this good. I ordered a fish special (Branzino - seabass) which was perfectly cooked and spiced but not to the extent where it overpowered the fish. Highly, highly recommend. Best Italian ever.

Best meal we had in Portland, perfectly prepared dishes, simple and fresh. Space lacks a little in ambience but the food is superb.

We stumbled upon the restaurant on a Sunday evening, having found loads of parking on the street--unheard of in Denver. It is classic Italian restaurant, except the check comes when asked! Paying can take a while in Italy. The server was attentive, very knowledgeable without being arrogant, and was genuinely pleased to tell us about the food. I would agree the pasta dishes were small, by American standards, if that's all you are ordering, but you are meant to have several courses. An excellent option is the nighty pris fixe menu...soup, salad, choice of daily entrees, dessert. I think it was $45 the night w we there. We had eaten a big lunch, so couldn't take it on. On my next visit, I will make sure I can have the menu. There are also menu and wine paring evenings, and I would definitely keep an eye out for those. Our food was all excellent, and there were some interesting, traditional things, such a the seafood stew. Wine was expensive, but you can bring your own for a $20 corkage fee. You can be casual or dressy, depending on the occasion!

Service overall was friendly and enthusiastic, if a bit ragged. We were asked immediately if we’d like bread for the table which never came until asked for. I got the feeling staff expected us to reuse silverware, and courses were brought out without silverware being replaced first. Bits of debris, like wine foil, were left on the table instead of being cleared. Food overall was rather mediocre. The charcuterie plate was good. Salad with orange and fennel was good. A cabbage salad with Gorgonzola and asparagus had just a tiny dollop of cheese and the asparagus was hot. Most of the table liked their ravioli but the spaghetti with seafood lacked any sauce and was otherwise pretty bland. Desserts were pretty good, especially the lemon custard cake with pine nuts which wasn’t too gooey, and the sorbets. But, at over $450 for four adults and two young children, with two very moderate bottles of wine, all the food should have been excellent, and the service more refined. All of that might explain why the restaurant was only half full on a Friday night.

Here is a spot that lives up to the reviews that precede this one. Excellent food, careful and unobtrusive service made for a most enjoyable evening. The menu is deep and variable. I was feeling like light and fresh and was pleased to start with shares among tablemates of Salumi and Formaggi appetizers before my fennel, beets and oranges salad. I had a delicious special ravioli plate. Absolutely wonderful. This unassuming locale authentically bears the Trattoria in its name with distinction. I will return!

Look no further! I am a transplanted Italian and a picky eater, and don't give my blessings easily, but Davide (owner, chef) deserves the highest credits. This could be among the best Italian eateries one finds on the West Coast. No exaggeration. Davide's preparation is in the authentic Italian school: simple is more (a disappearing choice with ever increasing complex menus). My aunt (zia Anna) owned a renowned restaurant in Salice Terme, and Davide's food brings me there again. Light on salt and fat, but tasty and fulfilling because of the preparation. A gem, and highly recommended

This restaurant was located right across the street from our hotel and offered really authentic Tuscan-style Italian food. I haven't had anything like it since my husband and I were in Tuscany a couple of years ago. It was PHENOMENAL. The flavors were fresh and on point. The noodles delicate and well-cooked. Our server was so very good and unobtrusive. The portions were just right. I felt like I was back in Tuscany, and my mom and I were both blown away.

This place is what causes some people to hate going out for dinner. Old stinky shrimp (not edible), old questionable clams, and old poorly selected mussels served over dried boxed spaghetti. Steak dish was actually three small slices of beef served over arugula. Condescending uninformed wait staff. I doubt whether any of Portland's established foodies will ever eat here more than once. The cucumber soup was good, Many of the other diners spoke with Italian accents, causing me to wonder whether I got all of the rotten stinky bad stuff and all of the good fresh stuff went to his friends. I have reviewed many restaurants and I formerly wrote about wine professionally (I was even a James Beard Award Nominee), and I rarely write negative things about a restaurant, but this was so disgusting that I can not remain silent. Rating: AVOID.

Not many people and great difficulty getting food out. I had this interesting but very dry pasta with pancetta and pecorino cheese. The chicken I ordered .. Milanese .. Was bare on the plate with nothing else and I sent it back. Then faro app. That I replaced the chicken with was OK, just weird. It has potential if the chef actually cared about what he put on the plate.

Stopped here for lunch and sat outside. Surprisingly excellent lunch and reasonable prices. We shared the meat and cheese antipasti plate - lovely presentation and generous portions. Lunch specials with the paninis and salad for one of us and soup the other. Everything was authentic italian and above expectations. Wine specials were a nice touch. Great service and well paced leisurely lunch. We were very excited with this find and will be returning to try the dinner menu.

My wife and I enjoyed a very nice dinner and enjoyed this restaurant very much. It's a romantic place to enjoy a touch of Italy Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, great selection of food and wine menu and the specials are really good. One of the best Italian dinners ever. A little pricey so best for special occasions. We liked it so much we purchased a gift certificate for a friend.

Literally stumbled onto it when it first opened. Fabulous pork tenderloin medallions and roasted eggplant. Let's not forget the minestrone soup to start things .While eating your way thru this plenty of good wine Red or White. Attentive staff. Folks let' s keep them in business!

Rated in the top 10% of Portland restaurants by TripAdvisor, dishes here are delicate and flavorful rather than heavy and over-sauced. We enjoyed one of the best Italian meals we’ve eaten in a long time at this downtown trattoria: a Dungeness crab salad and a seafood/mascarpone ravioli in olive oil. Tip: You can earn up to 5 airline miles/$1 spent through the Dining Rewards program and get 5% DOSH cash back on your total bill at Gallo Nero.

The menu and location were attractive for a late lunch/early supper, but the experience didn't life up to the promise. Among us we had two pasta dishes, the ribollita and the inzimino (spinach sauteed with onions and cherry tomatoes. The pasta and ribollita were unremarkable and the pasta portions were skimpy; and we're not big eaters. Only the inzimino was remarkable...it was simply delicious. $14-$16 for skimpy unremarkable pasta seemed a bit much to us.

Food wonderful as always the noise in the restaurant was not just noise, it was a din. People shouting at each other in good humor, table to table and at patroons they recognized coming in, but I could not hear my wife next to me nor the person 18 inches away across the table. Not the fault of the place, that its patrons can't tell they are not at a barbecue or a sports bar, but bad behavior in public is enough to put me off the establishment Too bad- really fine food

We have been here several times previously and always enjoyed it. This time was different, and I considered rating it Poor rather than Terrible because the food was good. But that was all and thus the Terrible.. First, we were seated promptly (we had a reservation) and given menus promptly. Then we waited for a long time for the waiter to come. He was ready to take our food order, no mention of drinks. No real Italian restaurant (or any fine restaurant) would take your food order before asking if you wanted something to drink, which we did. It took a while for him to return with our wine. Then he was ready to take our orders. Someone asked about the 4 course tasting menu which was listed on a separate piece of paper. He informed us that only one person per table can order this. When I asked the reason for that bizarre policy, he could not give a cogent explanation, nor say why three tables with two people each could order 3 tasting menus under their policy, but our table with 7 people could only order one. One person did get the tasting menu. They brought each person's order timed with the tasting menu. If you got an appetizer, it came when the tasting menu appetizer was served. If not, you got nothing until they reached your course. My wife got only a secundo so she was waiting while everyone else was served their primo and no one else got a secundo. She would have had to wait till everyone finished their meal until she got her dinner! After I vigorously protested, they brought her food, but everyone else was already eating their primo. They have this same idiotic policy for the 3 dessert sampler. Our waiter did not seem very knowledgable about Italian food nor about good service.

We often attend Portland Center Stage productions and always try to fine a good place to eat before or after the plays. We found this little gem while visiting a gallery next door. Small and friendly is the best descriptor. The owner is Italian and the food is fantastic! They have a notable wine selection, and the service is like family. We try to go at least once a month.

Coming from Europe and visiting Portland we absolutely enjoyed this restaurant. Small place with limited table setting, so reserving is recommended. All names on the menu are in Italian and the staff is speaking Italian. Normal size portions of all traditional dishes. Large choice of wines from different regions in Italy. Service was excellent.

We accepted the last reservation at 5 pm, sat outside under a tent and returned to Italy. The service by Andrew was outstanding - he brought so much joy and enthusiasm to the evening. We started with a tasty salad of asparagus. The Frutti di Mare was exceptional. All the shellfish/fish were superbly cooked but the crisp, flavorful shrimp was exquisite and kept its flavor until the last one was devoured. When I asked how the shrimp was cooked, Andrew smiled and said, "with Love and then a little bit more Love." My Strozzapreti included solid noodles with a gorgonzola finish, with arugula, and pepper - so good. Had a glass of Chianti Classico from Tuscany which was a terrific pairing. Overall, this was a memorable, delicious meal and when I am writing this review 5 days later, I can still taste the meal and feel the ambiance of the setting. Reservations are required.

Great wine list with excellent Italian choices. The appetizers were delicious as were the main courses. Great pasta, great meats. Highly recommended.

We had not been here for about 18 months, but went to a wine dinner with wines from Frescobaldi (fabulous value at $60). We were so impressed with the food and wine pairings, we came back for a “normal” dinner the following week. This is a little Italian gem, especially if one likes the wines from the Chianti Classico region. The food is very good, and the service friendly and efficient. They offer the usual Italian menu of Antipasti, Primi. Secondi, Contorni and Dolci. On the second visit we had one “main” course each. I had the Arrosticini (lamb skewers) from the Secondi list, and my wife had the Ravioli alla Pera from the Primi list and we shared the Verdure al Forno from the Contorni list – all washed down by a superb Chianti Classico Riserva. Anyone who is interested in Italian food and wine should sample Gallo Nero (in addition to Chianti Classico they have a wide range of other Italian wines, maybe not was wide as at Muca, but the Chianti selection is outstanding).

Finding a place to have brunch, much less a good brunch, on a Sunday in Portland is a challenge. Well we found a great Italian restaurant. What surprised us was there was hardly anyone in the place. Across the street the restaurant had a line waiting to be seated and it was just a pancake and egg kind of place. After finding Gallo Nero we will go back when we are next looking for Sunday brunch. We shared the antipasto which was more than enough for the four of us with a nice variety on the board. We then ordered a few of their other offerings. One member of our party ordered the ribollita which is a difficult dish to prepare and it was quite good. Quite frankly I don't remember the other dishes, but I do recall that all four of us thought all the dishes were delicious and well presented. This was a nice find - I hope they are still there when we visit next time - we all agreed that it was worth going back to.

If you want a real Italian experience, you need to try Gallo Nero. I have been to Italy and had lots of Italian food, and this is the real deal. Not only is the service impeccable, but the staff speak Italian as well! Every dish is prepared fresh with an outstanding presentation and wonderful seasonings. This is not your local Olive Garden. Gallo Nero is in a category all its own. One night of each month, the chef creates a special menu with wine pairings. It's an incredible meal that's not to be missed. The next time you're in the mood for some truly authentic Italian food, you need to get down to Gallo Nero!

This is a wonderful Italian restaurant in the Pearl District of Portland. The food and the service were very, very good. My only cavil would be that the tables could be smaller so that conversation could be carried out more easily.

This cozy little restaurant has some of the best food in the city. Tonight we enjoyed liver pate on toast that was delicate, tasty and unusual in presentation. We followed with a main course of gnocci and sea scallops. Both of these were perfection. For dessert we had housemade gelato and an exceptionally light apple cake with a scoop of vanilla gelato. Everything was divine. The wine selection is mostly Italian and very good.

Of our party of 4, it was the first time for 3 at Gallo Nero. Our fourth, who did not make the arrangements, later revealed it is one of her favorite restaurants. We ate her prior to theater and the nearby Armory/Portland Center Stage. A perfect match. The food was consistently very good-excellent among our 4 diners. We shared the generous salads (Caprese a Modo Nostro and Finocchio, Barbabietola E Arancia), which were nicely presented and perfectly dressed. Two of our party greatly enjoyed the Pasta E Fagiol. A third had the Tortelli Di Patate, which was perhaps the best dish of the evening. The fourth had the Gnocchi al pomodoro, which despite being perfectly cooked, was a little bland. They have an extensive wine list, both by glass and bottle, that is fairly priced. We did not order desserts as the salads and entrees were quite filling. The freshly made cafe Americano was a nice punctuation to a very enjoyable meal. Service was gracious and attentive.

We had an appetizer, entrees, dessert, and wine, which still didn't break the bank. The service was good, but the food was fantastic. The restaurant is small inside and also has outdoor seating - I definitely recommend calling ahead. Definitely worth a visit!

Stopped in because it was close by- what a nice surprise. We started with a shared appetizer of Parmigiana di Melanzane (roasted eggplant) Very tasty and beautifully presented. I had the spaghetti Ai Frutti di Mare and my date ordered the lasagna. Both with in house made pasta. Perfectly cooked. The Spaghetti was filled with lovely choices of seafood- mussels, clams, octopus, calamari, scallops and more. The amount of food was more than enough, but we decided to try deserts as well. I’m so glad we did. My date had the flourless chocolate cake- very good I chose the lemon tart which was devine! I should not fail to mention the quite attentive server who was friendly and full of personality. If you are looking for a nice meal, give them a call and book a table. I do recommend making a reservation. Highly recommend!

Gallo Nero is right across the street from the Hampton. I swung in for a quick glass of wine. The owner was very welcoming and knew his wine!

Best authentic Italian food we have had in the US. Many Florentine dishes on the menu. We had the tasting menu, which included burratta, lasagna, beef tenderloin and soup. Also the ravioli is delectable and cooked perfectly. Great value and superior quality. Very nice atmosphere, with down to earth people serving you. Felt like we were in Italy! Extensive wine selection. For dessert, go for the zuccotto and the tiramisu. Will be coming back for sure!

The restaurant was excellent in every respect. The service was exemplary as were the wine choices. We loved the pasta dishes. The pasta was homemade and delicate and flavorful. I had the ravioli and it was probably the best I've had. Plus the cucumber and yogurt soup was delicious and a great start to the meal. Everything was wonderful. We would highly recommend this restaurant.

I liked Gallo Nero very much! We went on a Monday nite, they seemed to be a little short staffed, but their friendliness and attentiveness made up for any lapses in service. The food was outstanding! I had the cheese plate app, which had more cheese on it than I expected. They had a very nice Italian wine selection, I picked something I never had before and it was very good, I was not disappointed. Main course was the Filetto( filet steak in a red wine reduction). It was very tender and served perfectly rare the way I like it. My wife had the veal kabobs served with chimichurri sauce. It was so moist and flavorful that it didn't even need the sauce. My friend had the fish stew served in a red sauce that he loved. Overall a great restaurant and I would definitely go back

We made a reservation for this Italian restaurant in the Pearl District for ourselves and another couple. The wine list was extensive with ample choices from the many Italian wine districts. The wait staff were kind to ask what our wine preferences were in American wines and then offer suggestions. They recommended the Toscan offering of Bolgheri Al Bruciato 2012. We loved it and went on to slowly feast on wonderfully and skillfully prepared cuisine. Two hours of great food, wine and friends. Recommend.

A lovely lunch with well-cooked pasta with a diverse selection of seafood beautifully presented, the setting was comfortable and relaxed. Authentic desserts and espresso drinks were also part of the experience.

On our last evening in Portland, my husband and I wanted a memorable dinner and we got just that! We sat outside next to a wonderful fire. Our waitress was fabulous and even had a small restaurant in Kingston, Ontario in common- Chez Piggy! Food, wine, and service was perfecto!

Elaine provides informed insightful descriptions of the offerings at Gallo Nero; whether foods or wines. The three in our party were fully satisfied with the array of selections, their preparation and presentation.

I unfortunately placed this same review under a restaurant with a similar name in Tallinn, Estonia. I apologize to the Trattoria Del Galla Nero in Estonia as I have not been there and would not want readers to assume that the following review for Gallo Nero in Portland, Oregon is the restaurant in Estonia. If you read the review you will see that I did mention that the restaurant was in the Pearl District in Portland, Oregon. Again, I have not been to the restaurant in Estonia, but assume it is a fine establishment. My apologies to the restaurant in Estonia for the confusion. Gallo Nero, in Portland, Oregon, which is the restaurant I did eat dinner at last week, was extremely disappointing as you will read in my review below. Six of us ate dinner at this Pearl District upscale restaurant. They obviously cater to a younger crowd with "nouveau" dining taste rather than people like us who prefer old fashioned food staples and nice size portions rather than small plates of. expensive fancy food. My husband prefers a salad of crunchy type greens such as iceberg lettuce or romaine. This restaurant only had field greens such as arugula. They didn't even offer a Caesar Salad. Two people ordered the 4 course special. This consisted of a small cup of soup with 2 spoonfuls, a salad that was bitter, a pasta course of one bite and an entree choice of rockfish or sliced up steak. The rockfish was overcooked and was about 2 ounces and served with garbanzo beans. It was more like an appetizer portion. My friend said it was horrible. Her husband said the steak was tough. They paid $70 for two people for this inedible dinner. My friend commented to the waiter that this was one of the worse meals she had ever eaten. He just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. I then commented to the hostess about my friend's comment and lack of concern that a customer was unhappy. Her response was to say she had heard the dialogue between my friend and the waiter, but she ignored it because she said they never hear any negative comments! What kind of restaurant doesn't want to please their customers, and fails to respond to a customer's complaint? Are they so arrogant to assume their food is perfect and there is no room for improvement? Most restaurants will immediately offer a replacement meal if the customer comments the meal was bad or comp the cost. The menu is divided up into several sections with first and second courses like they do in Europe. My husband ordered the lasagna which this restaurant served as an appetizer portion. Other Italian restaurants serve a larger and tastier lasagna Nothing else came with the lasagna since all menu items were a la carte. My husband was still hungry after eating as the portion size was about 6 ounces. I ordered " Arro Sticini" from the "secondi" menu which were lamb skewers. They were tasty but again, nothing else came on the plate but a few wilted greens. If you wanted a side dish you would have needed to have ordered from the "Contorni" section where the vegetables or potatoes were around $6 per order in potions for one person only. The only person who enjoyed the meal was our friend who ordered the fish stew. The waiter was so indifferent that he never offered to bring bread, nor did he ask if we wanted dessert or coffee after the meal. He brought the check immediately after we finished eating. We ordered dessert only because we were still hungry and we could tell the waiter was annoyed because we weren't leaving. The dessert portions were also extremely tiny and expensive. Gratuity of 20% was automatically included in our bill. The negative attitude of the employees, slow service plus the mediocre food of this restaurant puts it on our " we will never go back there and again" list. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g274958-d3339885-r361285708-Trattoria_Del_Gallo_Nero-Tallinn_Harju_County.html#

I was a little hard to find and figure out if Gall Nero was open for business. Soft, subtle lighting, nothing pretentious outside. It might have been a sandwich shop closed on a Sunday afternoon. Fortunately for us, it was most definitely open and we were fortunate enough to figure it out. The food is definitely-- and proudly-- Florentine in nature. There were combinations and choices neither I nor my wife had heard of before. The result? the salad was fresh and excellent; the fish ravioli that I tried was one of the unusual choices I've mentioned, and it was remarkably tasty without being overpowering as fish can be at times. Somebody in that kitchen really knew what they were doing! The wine list is small compared to some restaurants, be it appeared to be very adequate also. Other diners also expressed their enjoyment of the meal they'd had. Gallo Nero is definitely a winner for me and my wife.

We tried for a later reservation but Open Table said that 4 PM was the latest time that could accommodate us. When we arrived, punctually of course, they were still setting up. No other patrons showed up for 30 minutes so the four of us dined quietly together until 5 PM. I only got ruffled when management asked us to set our own table (joke,) but the atmosphere suggested so. My Alaskan cod was delicious and my wife's spaghetti mare was enjoyable but we Portlanders are getting spoiled by all the fresh pasta joints now in town.

Gallo Nero has two small dining areas. Unfortunately, there was a table of (8) and table of (6) with two (2) tops and we were the (4) top in our dining area. It was too noisy to have a conversation with our guests making the dining experience miserable.

The food took forever. The service was at a snails pace. The "homemade" pasta was too too al dente. The "chef" was rude The bill was HIGH for food I couldn't eat. She brought the wrong food. $35 for crappy pasta. TERRIBLE.

In Portland for a family trip and we happened to stumble upon Gallo Nero when looking for a place to dine. Our waiter was phenomenal and provided great recommendations for meal and wine selections. The restaurant is not very large, but we never felt crowded. Would definitely come back.

bruchetta was excellent- with diced local tomatoes fresh basil. Past was perfect al dente. Everything was prepared very well. highly recommend. Service was very good, but good have been better, a little stand offish, an it was not a busy night. ambiance i nice for a date.

Went with a group of friends for dinner. Wait staff was friendly however for $14.00 I got an overly seasoned/over cooked chicken breast without any pasta..rice..vegetables. Husband had fish which was ok but again very pricey and no accompaniments.Lots of great restaurants in Portland..this was not one of them!

Looked forward to our meal in part based on a friend's recommendation. Plus we had our eye on this place for a while. Menu looked interesting and authentic. Nothing met expectations. The ambience was fine. Low level din. Service was okay as well--though way overdone with the faux Italian accent and stressed out vibe of the server. Appetizer was okay. A salad then disappointed. We followed that with the three pasta sampler. All three were terrible. In fact, we barely ate any of them. At that point we chose not to proceed to a another course. An Italian place has to be able to make pasta. It's that simple. We will not go back and can't recommend this place. Portland has boat loads of outstanding restaurants so no need to go to a place that is subpar.

Never been here before and I had received some comments from colleagues that the food was good as well as the atmosphere. Off I went with a friend to grab a bite to eat after work. Arrived in time for our reservation and wasn't promptly seated. This happens so I can't complain. Once seated we received our menu's and then it took, for what seemed like forever for the waiter to return. Order was placed and then again, waited for what seemed like forever for the drinks to arrive. The food itself was average. No complaints but no wow factor. The meat option I took was fatty but whatever. Whilst eating I was asked by the waiter if I wanted another drink, sure I said. Well, at this point I was half way through my meal. By the time I'd finished it, the waiter hadn't returned. He then made an appearance, asked if we wanted desert, to which I said no. And simply asked to pay. Now it was fairly busy so not wanting to overly complain but it was a shame he didn't return. Needless to say, I went home slightly less merry.

It's hard to write a huge review on a small family own restaurant. I was greeted warmly, I came a bit early, the salmon in thyme, lemon wine butter was amazing. When you go solo, you don't get the luxuries of trying a bunch of dishes. It was an enjoyable experience. Support this restaurant

We stopped in to check this place out when looking for another restaurant. The friendly greeting and warm atmosphere sold us, and we stayed for lunch. This is a small place with great food and service. If we lived in the neighborhood, I'll bet that we be eating here twice a week.

This is a lovely, intimate Italian restaurant run by Italians. The food is wonderful, especially the pastas and fish. It is in a great location in the center of the Pearl District, and near several hotels. Great service and food, and a very nice, and reasonable wine list. They also serve the best olive oil I've ever had! A great find.

Stumbled onto this place on OpenTable, and were totally delighted. It is a small Italian place with a small, excellent menu. Their pasta are wonderful and the wine list, heavy towards Italian wines, is extensive and well-understood by the wait staff.

Fantastic Italian restaurant, not very known/busy, but excellent food They have a few tables inside and outside They offer quite a varied menu Most appreciated is the pasta sampler where you can combine two or even three different pasta combinations Prices are very reasonable Good and fast service Very quiet atmosphere: unlike many other places, everyone was having very reserved and quiet conversation. Very enjoyable if you are looking a romantic or a relaxing dinner Patrons were mostly couples

We were a party of 6. Had a nice table. Service good but not intrusive. Our table had a variety of dishes, both appetizers & entrees, and all were served hot & were very good. Owner is old world Italian & maybe not as touchy-feely as some would want, but for me the food speaks for itself.

Friends recommended this restaurant, and we are astounded we have not found it previously. Gallo Nero is located in Portland's Pearl District, a short walk from downtown. It is located in a small corner location with both indoor and outdoor dining. The chef is from Tuscany and knows his business. For example, one of the fresh pasta cuts on the menu is "pici," a traditional Sienese pasta that is seldom found outside the commune. Gallo Nero has an outstanding, yet reasonable wine list featuring some of the best wines from the Chianto Classico region. We had brought our own, but left it in the sleeve and ordered from the wine menu. There is a standard menu that is heavy on the meat selections, although a fish stew is always offered. There is also a daily menu of special dishes, always including a fish dish, which can be ordered as a prix fixe dinner or as a selection of a la carte items, like the rest of the menu. Insalati and contorni are sharable, so that ordering a la carte is not as expensive as it might seem. Our friends had veal chops, my wife had lamb skewers, while I had the port tenderloin, which was declared the best of the dishes by acclamation. Aside from the gelati, the dolci were somewhat disappointing, the only average note in an otherwise outstanding meal. Our server was knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. At the end of the evening, she let us know this was her first night there. Well done, Amber. You could have fooled us. Bravo, Gallo Nero. I don't know where we've been, but we'll be back.

The first red flag was that the restaurant wasn’t busy on a Saturday night. Our service was exceptional, but the food was dismal.I ordered the daily soup which just OK. My Wife and I shared the capresse salad , which again was adequate, but not exciting.. I Ordered the pasta with octopus , It was an embarrassing dish. Supposedly the pasta was made in house, no doubt not an Italian household. The octopus was skimpy, and tasteless. My wife ordered the pasta with seafood, which she described as terrible. The sole reason I gave the restaurant 3 stars was solely based on our server. We will never return, there are too many superb Italian restaurants in Portland to enjoy,

If you are looking for the best culinary experience in Portland look no further. The food is of the highest quality, the recipes always different and appealing, the service precise and caring. I ate here probably 100 times in the last 3 years and I never had 1 disappointment. Shall I say more? Just go and try, you won't be disappointed.

Stopped in because it was near a play reading we were attending. The food was very good. My wife had a lamb kebob and I had a cheese ravioli. Her lamb was outstanding and my ravioli was average because some of the pasta seemed doughy. The flavors, seasoning and presentation were all above average. The smoked salmon salad was excellent. The wine selection is excellent and the glass of Chiant Reserva was excellent. Prices are reasonable. Even with a large party next to us, it was not as noisy as we expected and the layout makes the place cozy and still open.

My wife and I ate here recently on a visit to Portland. On entering first impression was that we had somehow stumbled into a restaurant in Milan or Bologna - it had the same high ceilings and simple decor. The real treat however was the food. We split an Insalata di Tonno which was probably the best Tuna Salad/Salade Nicoise type starter salads we have ever tasted. For the pasta we split a Ravioli alla Pera which was mouthwatering though a little too al dente for my taste. My wife then had the Arrosticini - lamb skewers and I had the Fagioli all'uccelletto which I discovered to my delight is really the aristocratic version of the humble British bangers and beans. The service was excellent though when a restaurant serves food as good as this they should probably train their waiters not to make pert remarks about how clean the customers plates are, after every course! - a minor quibble thouhgh with an otherwise delightful evening.

We were the first customers of the day for an early dinner. Everything was amazing. the Strezopreta(sp) pasta was perfectly made. I had some pork kabob thing that was also made just right. The waiter was a little surly but not too bad. It added to the character of the place. There are some outdoor tables but we didn't use them. If you go to Powell Books, it's not that far from there.

We stumbled across this restaurant while walking around. Although we only had brief snacks and beverages, I would come back here again. Wonderful outdoor seating area. Very comfortable. The person who waited on us was WONDERFUL. Pleasant to talk to and you could tell was very concerned about the establishment - meaning he wanted folks to have a good time and make sure service was excellent. Which it was. Very good coffee. I'd come here again. I'm curious to experience their real menu and not just the brief snack we had.

We came around 6PM after a 12 hour work day, seeking good food. We have ate at many amazing Italian restuarants and have high expectations for the food. We came in dressed casually & were asked if we had a reservation. We replied no and were seated. We ordered ravioli alla para, $16/plate. Small portions, about 7 raviolis. Only wine is available for beverage. Raviolis came plain with no sauce or protein, and all though the cheese stuffing was very good, the raviolis were totally undercooked. I was going to mention this if given the opportunity, however the waiter never asked us how the food was, and didn't seem to care whatsoever. The staff seemed extremely stuck up and we won't be returning. There is significantly better italian places in PDX.

We made last minute reservations and were very impressed. Reminded me of eating in Italy. Slow paced, time to enjoy your food. The only downfall was it was very loud, but this was due to other costumers, maybe seats outside next time if the weather permits. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for an authentic Italian experience with some of the best food in Portland. This is not a place to come in and rush through a meal kind of place.

Lunch date with wine: beef/pasta in broth appetizer, wild boar and halibut entrees, expresso over creamy gelato for dessert. All were flawless and divine. Perfect presentation, meal and service.

6 of us dined at Gallo Nero two nights ago. The staff were friendly and the food was very good. My Pasta Fagiole was not what I was expecting. It seemed thicker with tomato sauce than I expected. I decided to consider it a different dish and after that it was OK. The risotto was terrific and was shared by all to great acclaim. The wines were very nice. The desserts (an apple tarte and a tiramisu) were shared and enjoyed by all. This is the kind of place that makes you feel at home. We'll be back.

Dinner was alright but the waiter really lays it on thick. Maybe a cultural thing although I do not recall people behaving this way in Italy. Maybe a sales culture thing. Where was we last serving? Could be a clue...

My husband and I have had many meals here, and in fact we had our wedding reception dinner at this restaurant, which all our guests agreed was one of the best meals they've ever eaten. You can't go wrong with the tasting menu, which is different each day and a great value for the quality of the food.

Even though we live in the Pearl District - we had never eaten at Trattoria Gallo Nero until some friends from across the river suggested it. We met them there on a Friday evening - and we had a truly wonderful time. My wife and our friends had the fixed priced dinner - with 3 fixed courses and an entree option. While their son and I ordered from the ala carte menu. All of our food was outstanding - excellently prepared, beautifully presented, and an excellent value. We started off discussing which bottle of wine to order - so our waitress had "the lady who orders the wine" come over. I forget her name - but she was one of the most knowledgable Italian wine experts I've ever met - and with no pretension. She described several different wines and recommend an outstanding small vineyard red wine. It was so good - we didn't realize that we had drank the entire bottle before our entrees arrived. I had the Zuppa imperiale cheese bread soup - and it reminded me of one my Italian Grandmother used to make. For my entree I had the Arrosticini red wine marinated lamb skewers with a side of sautéed spinach. The three lamb skewers were delicious but a little dry - and could have used a nice red wine sauce. But the dollop of house made pesto with mint on the plate was amazing and one of the best pesto's I've ever had. Our waitress was outstanding - personable and charming - she just wowed us. And lastly -- save room for the house made Tiramisu -- OMG it was outstanding! We shared a serving between us - but next time I eat here - I'm ordering one for myself and I won't be sharing! Overall we had a excellent dinner - great food and wine -- and we left with smiles all around.

While wandering in the Pearl district, Portland, we found this corner restaurant only because they had a sign on the street. It is not well marked and when you look in the door, all you notice is the bar. We were so happy we were hungry enough to try to find out more. Having someone who tries to be gluten free we were a bit concerned about an "Italian" restaurant. We needn't be. There were many gluten free options, at least at lunch. The two of us shared a lovely Caprese salad and lamb bits (ARROSTICINI) which was the weekend luncheon special. Both were quite adequate and delicious. A good Italian coffee ended our meal. The waiter, from Italy, was friendly and offered us to give us advise when we plan a trip to his country. It was an enjoyable time. Now I want to go back for dinner!!

This quaint restaurant has some amazing food. I had the Tortelli di patate and the Tiramisu. Absolutely fantastic. The pasta portion was a bit small, but it was very delicious. My parents also really enjoyed it.

After some good experiences with pretty good so-called Italian restaurant with very little similarity to a restaurant somewhere in Italy, we ended up in Gallo Nero - after a recommendation from some friends. And hey, the interior looked very similar to a Ristorante somewhere close to Florence, the very friendly staff had a strong Italian accent and the food was delicious. Like the Fegatini and Fettunta - very down-to-earth food. We had different main courses - and oh gosh, same problem as in Italy as one of main courses came without any sides - so do not forget to check on this (we had a wonderful fish, excellent lamb chobs and a beef w/o sides). There was one downside - as the espresso was good - but not great ;-) (but still good compared to Starbucks coffee !).

This restaurant is truly amazing. The food is excellent, the service is also excellent. Our serve, Elaine was on top of everything and super friendly. The ambiance is second to none.

This was our (friends) first visit to Gallon Nero. Staff was friendly, accommodating and helpful. We loved the fact you could get "sampling" plates -- two or three smaller servings of pasta on a plate, two or three servings of bruschetta. Smaller than an entree size but certainly enough for lunch. We tried the fettunta, Americana and Gorgonzola bruschettas -- the Gorgonzola was my least favorite, but the other two were wonderful. We also had the asparagus and green cabbage salad -- this tasted far better than the combination sounds! We had the ravioli di ricotta, the tagliatelle and the shellfish pasta for our entrees, and they were all very good -- the ravioli was too al dente (even my Italian friend agreed)-- needed about one more minute -- but, still good. Great wine selection. We will go back.

Tiny, family owned hole-in-the-wall served the best meal I’ve ever had! My friends—who know this place well—took me there for my birthday. The waiter suggested excellent wine choices for our meals. My friend ordered lasagna, which was dripping with cheese and she loved it. Her husband order the cacciucco and I thought he would pass out from pleasure. I had the sushi-grade grilled tuna with baby spinach covered with shaved fennel and three fat asparagus spears, still slightly crisp and very tender. The tuna was divine—crisp on the outside but rare in the middle. And it was prepared by a young kid, an apprentice! They ordered gelato for dessert, but I had to try the torte capresse, which arrived with a free scoop of gelato and a flaming candle! I can’t say enough good things about this experience!

We were looking for a late afternoon meal and our search led us to Gallo Nero. This is a cozy place. You walk into a front room with a bar and a couple of tables and then into the dining room which seats around 25. While small, you are not packed in like sardines as in some places. We chose to sit away from the windows, but still had a nice view of Everett Street. Our server was very friendly and was happy to explain the dishes and pronunciations we had questions about. We started out with the Fegatini (chicken liver pate) and while my wife is the liver fan in our family, I tried it and found it very tasty. She loved it and declared base on that we would be back. For our entrees I ordered the Arrosticini (lamb skewers on a bed of greens), my wife ordered the Scaloppina (chicken breast with a tasty sauce) and we shared orders of Patate arrosto (roasted potatoes) and Inzimino (a sauteed mixture of spinach, onions & cherry tomatoes). All four dishes were wonderful and the bread that accompanied our meal was also tasty. Our wonderful waiter had to leave us halfway thru the meal (shift change), but the transition was smooth and while the second waiter was not as personable, he was good. This was a very relaxing and tasty meal in a comfortable atmosphere. It is also nice to be able to get a meal of this quality in the afternoon and not have to wait until 5:00 for the restaurant to open. We will be back.

We were in the Pearl District of Portland for the day and wanted to check out some local fare. After doing some searching online, the reviews of Gallo Nero on TripAdvisor really got us excited for checking out this apparently awesome restaurant. Unfortunately, we left Gallo Nero completely disappointed in our experience. The list of failures is long. The potatoes were so undercooked as to be hard. My wife's pork was dry and tough. My steak was also tough - a bad cut of beef. My steak was also served raw, but I didn't send it back because I think it would've only gotten tougher had it been cooked medium-rare as ordered. The wine-reduction sauce on the steak was bland (I make a much better one at home). The polenta was soggy. The service was apathetic. My wife and I are usually willing to give a place a second try, but only when the prices are reasonable. When two people spend over $100 for a regular meal (two -small- glasses of pedestrian chianti, some a la carte salads, veggies, and two entrees), in our book it should be excellent every time. Our meals were not. In fact, they were about what I would expect at a Shari's or a Denny's (actually, Denny's might've done a better job). We tried Gallo Nero because we wanted to try something new, something other than our old dependable Veritable Quandry, which is where we usually go when we're visiting Portland (the Veritable Quandry is a reliably fantastic restaurant!). I guess we'll be sticking with the VQ the next time we're in town.

This place was right across the Hampton Inn. They have an outside seating area. Everyone was friendly and service was quick. The food was great and I would come back. There were a few items on the menu I would have loved to try. Their chef’s menu looked amazing too.

Had lunch here solo. Ordered the Strozzapreti which was handmade pasta with generous pieces of prosciutto, garlic, arugula in a buttery mascarpone sauce. Excellent! I will be thinking of this dish for a long time. It is not a main entree dish so on the smaller side, nice for lunch. Just like in restaurants in Italy you would want to order this as one of two dishes if you are hungry or are having dinner but definitely worth ordering! Enjoy!

Picked this restaurant based on good Trip Advisor ratings. Did not disappoint. Small restaurant with cozy atmosphere. Very friendly and efficient service. Has a good selection on Itlaian wines with a particularly good selection of Chianti. Food was very good. I picked a 2 pasta selection which gave me a chance to sample 2 of an interesting choice of pasta dishes. Had an interesting appetizer, a selection of different toppings on polenta.

I have had lunch there 3 times. The food is good, although the portions are tiny for the price and no bread is offered. The dining room is a pleasant place to sit. There is only one wait staff for the 2 rooms. I'm Italian-speaking, however each time I say hello in Italian, as I enter, this manager/owner gives me a smirk and answers in English. He spends his time catering to one table of Italian guests and when people enter or leave he never looks and says bye or thanks or anything. He runs the place for his personal friends only. If you want to speak Italian and get a taste for this wonderful culture, go to Piazza Italia. The manager of Gallo Nero does not do much credit to his culture and what a way to run a business! I won't go back.

Take the night off and journey to Italy! My spouse and I had an amazing experience. True Italian food, prepared to perfection and well worth the wait. Please, do be patient as everything is made to order. Everyone is friendly, so stick around for some delicious Hazelnut Gelato!

My husband and I joined another couple for a delicious dinner. The wait staff was attentive and helpful in making recommendations about wine and food. Each course was delicious and there seemed to be something for everyone. An Italian restaurant that you can enjoy whether you are a carnivore, vegetarian, following a low carb diet etc. I had a lovely salad with cabbage and steamed asparagus. Then for an entree I had grilled shrimp and calamari on a bed of spinach. My husband had pasta with bolognese sauce as a first course and then a steak for his main course. Our dining partners ate completely different items and everyone was thrilled with their dinner. Cannot wait to go back.

This is a tiny place with a lot of food-tude! It is mostly Italian with some flares here and there. Every other time I come I get one of their steaks and it is just cooked perfectly each time! It gets busy but it is still a hidden gem to me!

Fabulous food, atmosphere, and last but absolutely not least, the staff are phenomenal! They always have made business dinners relaxing and I have always left feeling completely satiated. The drinks are definitely on point, too!

Wow. Wow. Recommended by a local friend, our meal was exceptional. Started with drinks - best gin and tonic with juniper berries and excellent white wine pairing selected by our server Elaine- and the best olive oil and soft cheese bruschetta. My husband had fettuccine with lobster and I had halibut over spinach. Dessert was an amazing lemon tart just the perfect sweetness. Limoncello was a special after dinner drink. Seating for only a few parties so make reservations in advance. Highly recommended!!

I have been working in Portland a lot lately and have been eating my way around town. We are both vegetarians and have found some restaurants lacking. We loved the food here. We had two salads we loved! Insalata di cavolo pere e noci and Verza e Asparagi. And two great pastas - Risotto ai porcini and Pasta e fagioli. Yum!

Our foursome visited Gallo Nero for happy hour recently. House wines were quite good, and the entrees ample and very tasty. My lamb skewer portion was more than I could finish - I wish I were going home afterwards to save the leftovers. We will definitely be back.

We always enjoy having lunch at this authentic, informal Tuscan restaurant. This time, our son from the east coast joined us. We had an amazing lunch: butternut squash soup (made without cream), perfectly seasoned and creamy, Tuscan style rockfish with olives and tomatoes over spinach, pasta with bay shrimp and dungeness crab in a light vodka sauce, a sockeye smoked salmon salad, roasted seasonal vegetables, superb wine and dessert. All ingredients are fresh and prepared in the simple, exquisite style of Tuscan cooking. Our attentive server couldn't have been better, answering all of our questions, providing extra plates for sharing etc. Will look forward to returning soon.

This restaurant is right across from the Hampton Inn where we stayed. It is a small restaurant with seating outdoors. We had bruschetta, kale and pear salad and ravioli. They had made it fresh that day. Food and service were awesome. Recommend you reserve although we were lucky.

A small restaurant with a truly great chef. Have eaten here many times as my 'go-to' Italian restaurant. Have taken guests here, been to business lunches and most recently, an anniversary dinner and Chef Davide hasn't failed me yet, whether for simple pasta dishes or 5 course dinners.

We went to dinner before going to a play at the Armory. The restaurant was small but only a few tables had customers (not a good sign). The server was mostly unfriendly (not quite rude), and it took a long time for the meal to come. No apologies or even any comment about it. It took so long we didn't get dessert. The pasta was good (small portion) and the stew was flavorful but seemed a little over cooked (chewy squid) and they left the bones in the fish.

We started out our dinner with ordering a $28 bottle of prosecco that lasted us the whole meal, split between my wife and I. It was delicious, and went well with all that we had. We had the antipasto misto (a variety of cured Italian meats, including a tasty mortadella with pistachios, and cheeses, with crostini) ($18), and it was very flavorful. For the primi I ordered a caprese a modo nostro salad that was fresh and traditional ($8), and my wife had a ravioli Salvia di ricotta that was just a little undercooked, but had a great butter and sage sauce. Our adult son had the tortellini Brodo zuppe to start off his special four course meal, with an endive and crab salad and fish main course, that he devoured ($35). My wife then had the Chicken Scaloppina and the Pomodori gratinati (stuffed broiled tomatoes)($6), with the tomatoes standing out. I had the pasta e Fagioli, a Maltagliati cooked with garlic, tomato and cannelloni beans ($14) and the Fagioli al Coccio (cannellini beans cooked with garlic and rosemary) ($5), with the Maltagliati as the highlight. For dessert, my wife had the Affogato, an ice cream and espresso combination that she loved. Our son had the scoops of sweet cream and chocolate gelato. Total $200 for three with tip.

We had not been for about three years because of worries about walking around downtown Portland, but we were happy to be back. The restaurant has expanded space since we were there and now provides a more romantic space. The service as before was great, and the food very good. The star for us is the wine list - what other Portland restaurants list their Chianti Classicos by village? The restaurant name is the badge of the Chianti Classico Consorzio and the list used to be all that region but now has gems from all over Italy and now has probably the best Italian list in Portland. However we stuck to Chianti Classico and had a lovely wine from Radda in Chianti - an area with higher altitude giving leaner and more elegant wines. Then the finish was a glass of Barolo Chinato - not possible in many Portland restaurants. We will certainly be back and say that any fan of Italian wines should put it on their "must do" list.

Really nice, knowledgeable and helpful while unpretentious waitstaff. Carefully prepared dishes. Terrific risottos and pasta. I will definitely return when the opportunity presents.
as always, excellent
we've dined several times at Gallo Nero, which makes me realize i don't go there often enough - it's *that* good. service is very good - our server was sensitive to our timing, was very familiar with the wines, checked with us just often enough to be sure our needs were met. i haven't yet found a dish that i don't like, and particularly like their lamb skewers. pricing is reasonable (not cheap, not outrageous) but fully fair for the quality of food and service. we've brought other couples here, and they all have come away happy.
