This restaurant received such high rating and my daughter wanted to try it out. We ordered a couple of different types of tacos but she didn't care for them and when I tried them I wasn't a fan either, plus they are expensive. One of the tacos came with corn and black beans and they were served cold which turned us off. The interior of this place is cool and it would be a great spot to grab a beer but I will pass on the tacos.

This is definitely not a tourist spot and perhaps not even for those over 30 (unless you are still young at heart). The place best characterizes what was more common in earlier San Francisco. It is casual in appearance with zero pretensions. However, the food is great both in quality and quantity and the tap beer selections should meet the wants of almost any type of beer drinker. Ordering your meal is done at the extreme back counter of the restaurant and as others have stated, the line for ordering can be long and somewhat slow; so come slightly before it opens at 11:30 for lunch or plan on eating after the noon rush. Same should apply to dinner hours. Payment is cash only, although there is an ATM just inside the door if required. Once you have ordered and seated the service is usually not far behind and is extremely friendly. Unfortunately, the server has to wander around the tables in search of the appropriate customers and this seems to add a slight delay to the service especially when the place is packed. Our meal experience was limited to Fish Taco ($5), Carnitas Zapato ($7) and Chips & Salsa ($3) and all were fresh, tasty and ample. If you want more spice there is a counter on the right side with several choices. A beer was $5.

Fish tacos were awesome, burger was amazing too. Portions are quite large. All food is made to order and super fresh. Great selection of craft beer and non-alcoholic options too. They only take cash! The ambiance is very hip and casual, although dark. I understand that it can get really busy, however we were there mid afternoon on a weekday and it was very quiet. Neighbourhood is ok... not sure I'd want to be walking around by myself at night though. Will definitely be back next time I'm in SF!!

This taco place has a lot to offer before a ball game. The restaurant was recommended to us by a local friend and they were spot on. From delicious tacos to very good beers Garaje hit the spot before the ball game. We ordered the El Camino and the Como se llama both tacos were very good. The decor was dark and needs to be picked up. The beer choices were average as well. I give Garaje a B+

Had a great experience here before a game (GO GIANTS!) We had 4 tacos between us- tuna, mermaid, talapia x2- and they were great- unfortunately we didn't see or hear about the condiment bar until we saw it on the way out! Service was at counter, and was chill and friendly. Would go back FOR SURE. Cost effective, no fuss, chill atmosphere, friendly service, and good food and beer~ Yes, please!

Would never have found this place if it wasn't for TripAdvisor, easy to walk past. Great selection of cheap Mexican food, which was fresh and tasty. Enjoyed the Dirt Wolf IPA beer, great recommendation from the staff. Would go again

This is a hole in the wall that offers some amazing Tacos. We have had Fish, Shrimp, chicken and carnitas tacos. The Fish and Shrimp tacos are really good. I will definitely come back.

The Zapatos here are hella good, it’s like a loaded quesadilla, I got the rolls Royce one which comes with carne asada and shrimp with fries inside kinda like a cali surf and turf burrito in quesadilla form. My wife had the fish taco which she said was a little bland but the portion was big. I also had the blueberry parfait beer which was good, the drinks menu is a bit hard to read but there’s a lot of options you can’t find anywhere else, the interior atmosphere is a bit dark and dive bar-esque, it wasn’t crowded when I went with a party of 5 on a Friday night. I would come back to try different food items and drinks.

Fresh, fresh, fresh! High quality for an affordable price. I had a steak taco and a tostadita and they were both amazing. There were 5 people in our group and everyone raved about their food... burgers, fish, and Mexican. Great beer selection, they even had a beer for my 'crap beer' drinking husband! We were caught unprepared for CASH ONLY, but fortunately there is an ATM in the restaurant - go figure! We'll definitely revisit on our next trip to San Francisco.

We came here with Swedish friends, who are familiar with the place. They ordered what we ate and drunk. Unless they've taken us here,we would have missed it. It doesn't look like a restaurant from the outside(and inside). But what what we consumed was excellent! The best tacos and beer during our two weeks stay in California!

So so good. The mermaid is an excellent vegetarian option & super delicious. Cauliflower & lots of veggies. Chips, salsa, & their own hot sauce are delicious too!! Ambience is funky & fun. Great beer.

We found this place after going to an afternoon Giants game, and were so impressed that we came back again the next day! The tacos were incredible - we had the ahi tuna, carnitas, and the carne asada, they were all great but their carnitas was next level delicious. There's also a great beer list for the craft beer fans! As others have mentioned here, it's cash only so ensure you have some on hand. Highly recommend!

This place was super good. Just bring cash. French fries were excellent. Burgers were steaming hot like the fries!! Close to the ballpark. Going back to try other foods.

At Moscone for a conference and welcomed the 5 min walk to Garaje for tacos. Was so mentally refreshed by try good vibes in this place. Great mix of tunes overhead, a very kind and friendly staff, and delicious, authentic tacos with a selection of hot sauces that made my eyes tear. Literally. They even let me try a few different beers when I hadn't heard of any of their west coast microbrews. So cool. Great place. Best lunch I've had all week.

I found Garaje because I had to come here for work. That was 2 weeks ago and I've been back 3 times since then to eat! That's saying a lot considering its in an area with lots of places to eat. Garaje is a dimly lit space with a split beer selection - "no crap on tap" says the sign behind the bar. Despite the Spanish name and Latin influence on the menu there's a sign when you come in that says "We're So Not A Taqueria". You can't go wrong with the menu ALL GOOD and a very cool atmosphere & great staff as well - I highly recommend this one!!

The zapatos are to die for - except when they don't put enough cheese, then they're mediocre. Also, this place is cash only which is inconvenient.

This a cool relaxed bar that serves food. The beer is all craft type beers which aren't my favorite but many will like them I'm sure. The food was very good. Tacos were great, the pulled pork sandwich looked incredible. They don't take credit cards but there is an ATM there.

I was here about 10 months ago and after doing some business today in SF, I met my son here for lunch. As I found in the previous visit the place was very busy, but the line moved quickly and the orders taken and the food served promptly. This is a wonderful place for an extremely casual meal along with some good tap beer selections. The chip and salsa order is huge and needs to be shared with at least another person. The menu selections are many and the food is fine and the prices great. Be sure to come with cash or use the ATM just inside the door since no cards or checks are accepted.

Not much to look at from the outside, but for a casual food lunch or dinner that is well priced and very tasty a very good bet. Good beer selection too to go with your lunch.

Great restaurant that balances hipster ambiance with SOMA grit. Nestled under I-80, this place serves up some mighty good tacos. I am pretty sure that everything on the menu is someones favorite. Word to the wise, its cash only and the line moves a little slow, but the food is very good and dare I say - worth a little wait.

Interesting menu. Most of the stuff isn't Mexican in the traditional taco stand sense, To me it's fusion cooking with plenty of liberties taken on ethnic Mexican food. We sampled a lot, some of it is better than the others. I liked the ahi tuna taco but was less thrilled with the mojo chicken zapato. All in all good food though, and a very good value for San Francisco. In true SF style they take certain civil liberties to the extreme. That includes people bringing pets into the restaurant? The young lady next to us had her dog under the table. I don't think it was a service dog. I don't know anything about the beer selection, we were on a business lunch and I don't drink any more but they seemed to have one hell of a selection.

This is favorite among locals and visitors alike as the food is always made-to-order and with fresh ingredients. Albeit service does come with a bit of the SF hipster 'tude and the place is inconveniently cash only. I highly recommend the Zapato, it's like a panini pressed giant quesadilla filled with melted cheese, meat and/or shrimp. It's marginally Mexican and absolutely an SF original.

Great burgers, delicious fries with a fantastic selection of drinks. I chose the Sangria and my husband had a beer... they have a sign "nothing crap on tap". Ice hockey, basketball and baseball were playing for the sports mad along with classic beats and an awesome eclectic interior. Perfect for a quick cheap casual meal. Don't worry if you don't get a booth downstairs... the best seats are up on the balcony bar overlooking the kitchen and dining area!

It is somehow hard to find this place especially in the dark of the evening. Then you enter into a wonderful world of ambience through a "hidden" door. There are several types of tacos, hamburgers and sandwiches (zapatos) of great taste. Don't forget to have the hot sauces, the orange sauce in particular, served free in front of the kitchen.

I enjoyed their tacos and Zapatos (burritos). Good selection of meat and fish choices. Service is good and fast. It gets busy lunch time so try to avoid the rush hour. Cash only establishment. There's an ATM inside the restaurant.

Great place with good food. The place looks like a pub but the menu is interesting as well as tasty. Nice atmosphere ond fast service. I had the carnitas cali with was decent enough. The tuna-taco was to die for and the burgers got mixed reviews. So we land at a solid 4.

Great place in SoMa to have drinks, eat or before a ball game. Food was very good and cheap for the size and quality of the food. If you're a big group get here early, there were long queues and not a lot of spare tables for more than 3/4 people.

We went to Garaje on an evening a ballgame was on in San Fran. The atmosphere was great - people were dropping in on their way to the game, the food was good and the beers were tasty. We both had a cheeseburger - the burgers are huge! They offer a double burger but I have no idea how anyone could eat it all, must be about a pound of meat. Great evening, not expensive ($20 each) very glad we visited and highly recommend!

Found this place on Yelp while visiting San Fran. Not disappointed at all. Busy....wait in line longer than u wait for food. Grab a table when u see one open! This is where the locals eat....not really a tourist site. Got the steak burrito.....wrapped & toasted/pressed....delicious. Authentic San Fran Mexican food!

By sight we would have never gone in there but the place is great, the food is excellent and the drinks (beer) is even better. You go to the counter and order and then they call you to pick up. We started with a dish each and then we loved it so much we re-ordered twice. We centered on mexican food since we do not have it Greece.

Casual and counter service. Such gentle prices you do not mind that it is Cash Only. And a bouncer! My husband and I never find ourselves in places that have a bouncer. So the crowd was the age of our daughter, or my husband's suits. For $31 we enjoyed, salad two tacos and a massive slushy sangria. Seven pm there was no line to get in on A Monday. Closed Sundays. We are staying south of Market and this is even more south of Market. Past Folsom.

Folks at the Blackhammer Brewery just around the corner recommended it. (Blackhammer another great stop by the way that encourage you to bring in food from around the neighborhood) Somewhat hard to find because small entry hidden amongst neighboring businesses but once inside wall to wall activity at lunch time. Our food was excellent and draft IPA was very good at modest price for downtown location. Service was very fast. (Order at counter and food brought to your table) Will definitely return if we are again in the City.

Ordered the fish tacos and carnitas, tasted very good and the selection of craft beer is impressive. Shuld try again sometime

The hubby and I had a great experience at Garaje. My only regret is that we weren't hungry enough when we showed up. We both ordered two tacos and a beer, figuring 1 1/2 would be about right for me and 2 1/2 would be enough for hubby. (Gross miscalculation) Beer selection was incredible! Loved the atmosphere and vibe of the place. Enjoyed our excellent beers while we waited for our food to arrive. We were surprised by how quickly our orders appeared on our table. But why didn't anyone tell us the tacos are HUGE? Hubby had grilled fish (good but pales in comparison to the others) and I had ahi (AMAZING). We both had a Como Se Llama and loved it. However, I was barely able to finish one taco and the hubby struggled to get through two. Next time we will each order one taco and a beer! Definitely going back; highly recommend this place.

Stopped in for lunch shortly after arriving in SF. A local had recommended this place to us and it had great TA reviews so we decided to give it a try. We had a burrito and the fish tacos. The burrito was very good and the fish tacos were just ok (when I think of fish tacos I think of Oscar's in San Diego). The location was a little difficult to find but on the plus side they had several soccer matches on the TV.

This place is fantastic if you like great tacos and cool tasting beer. The cadillac taco is a work of art they take two tortillas together with cheese then they put beef with smother guacamole and finally three giant shrimp on top. The shrimp alone are fantastic . I still don't know where they get them but they are great . The other taco are wonderful as well . Stick only to the tacos whether it's the fish or shrimp tacos they are all great . This place is lively and loud . Ps they only take cash

We went to Garaje on a lunch break and thoroughly enjoyed the food. Everything was fresh, delicious, and the menu is really inventive.

came with a large group and we had to wait in the queue to order food/beer but it was definitely worth it! excellent food, very friendly service (despite it being super busy) buzzy, casual and fun, highly recommend

Not a beer fan so wish they have some other spirit to pair that wonderful food they serve! ( sangria..Was ok..) Shrimp taco! Delish! Quac is a must! Pork is too sweet to my taste.. Chicken sandwich is good. But overall is the good place: always busy, fast service, huge great selection of beer (wish I could drink that!) Nice cool ambience kinda chic especially in the financial district! Crazy busy on lunch hours but guys know how to move fast! Great Mexican food !

Our destination for eats whenever we go see the Giants. A walk from BART to Garaje and then to Oracle but worth it. Hole-in-the-wall sort of place but in a great way. Food is tremendous and we pretty much eat and consume any one of a number of Zapatos--the latest being the Rolls Royce with steak and shrimp and the vegetarian. Burgers good as well (also have tacos and other sandwiches--big menu). Many beers on tap to choose from-- I'm not an IPA guy so there are lager options. People are very friendly, the atmosphere tremendous, and the music never disappoints. We've been going for 5 years--worth it.

Was there for work lunch with friends. The place was packed but things were moving quickly. Food came fast and was super good. Mexican with a twist. I would recommend the place

This place is close to work and while we go here for lunch from time to time, this place is even better for a beer and some pub fare after work! During the lunch hour, the place is packed and the wait times can be long. So for us it's more relaxed to just go here for a burger & beer after work. You can even hang out here to watch a game on one of the many TVs. The food is excellent, as is the selection of beers they have on tap!

This place looks like a diner or pub, and caters mostly to people on their lunch break, but the food is a couple of cuts above what other similar places tend to serve. You can tell Garaje uses fresh, high quality ingredients, and the diverse menu topped with an impressive variety of tap beers means you really can't go wrong. I've sampled quite a lot of items on their menu, and have never been disappointed.

So good! I was looking for a place to eat so I popped open TripAdvisor and looked at this place. It looked great. Tried it, and I was not disappointed. Definitely has a dive bar sort of feel but it is somewhat charming at the same time. Got one of their zapatos - sooooo good. Burrito in a panini press, basically. I already want to go back.

Yum, frickin, yum!!! Their burger was so delicious and the pulled pork sandwich was even better. It was hard to take a bite out of either because they were so huge! Their fries were even to die for. I was very impressed with their sangria. It was dark, deep flavors and not fruity. My husband had the hitachino white Ale which was interesting and good. Hidden gem, order at counter, seat yourself and CASH only! So simple. DO NOT MISS!

Best Seared Tuna Taco EVER Best Seared Tuna Taco EVER Best Seared Tuna Taco EVER Best Seared Tuna Taco EVER Best Seared Tuna Taco EVER Best Seared Tuna Taco EVER Best Seared Tuna Taco EVER

Love places like this! Totally casual neighborhood bar with amazing food and beer selections... I had the ahi and carne tacos... Delicious! Just the right balance of flavors, not too spicy... Just right! So good that I had to order another ahi taco before I left! Great place!!!!

Wanted a quick lunch. Settled on a carnitas taco and asada taco. They were quite good, delivered quickly, and I enjoyed my lunch listing to a variety of music. I arrived closer to 1 pm, so there was hardly any line. Great little taco place, I'll be back.

Couldn't decided on a place and then they were all closed. Our SF native friend took us here. Nothing fancy. Cash only. Find your own seating. Interesting ambiance/design. Good American-style Mexican dishes.

My husband and I went to this restaurant thinking it was going to be your typical taqueria, which is what we were looking for. For Mexican food they pretty much had tacos and nachos. However, they had a burger section on the menu as well, so we opted for American instead. The burgers were so bomb! I had bacon on mine and my husband had fried egg on his. The burgers were yummy gourmet burgers with good quality toppings and buns. Loved it! Also, the atmosphere with its old concert postings and license plates was a plus. I would definitely visit again!

Stopped in here for lunch while in the City by the Bay and had a wonderful experience. While the line to order is sometimes a bit long, it moves rather quickly and it is worth the wait. I had the Carnitas Zapato and my wife had the Fish and Avocado Taco. We shared a basket of chips and salsa. The Zapato could easily have been shared since it was more than I could eat and the Taco was more of an appetizer than a meal. However, with the chips & salsa and the over abundance of Zapato we had plenty. The Converge IPA was also a smooth and hoppy delight.

This place is super fun and a very cheap/quick eat. Burgers are AMAZING. Lots of unique beers you can buy on tap. Atmosphere is very cool

This is the first place my family and I ate during our trip. We were amazed. The food was fabulous! The burgers were delicious; MUST ADD THE GUAC, it is to die for. I am going to have to find a way to ship the carne asada fries back to Phoenix! ! !

Garaje boasts “no crap on tap”, and based on the beers we tried they are true to their word. They must have twenty or so very different, difficult to find beers, and there’s something for everyone. The food is also nicely prepared and tasty- I would recommend the beer battered fish taco! Prices are very fair- beer and lunch for four came to $70, but remember to bring cash, they don’t take credit cards!

We'd read this has the best burger in SF and it certainly didn't disappoint! Priced at about $11 for a single burger with cheese and loads of toppings, the burger arrived hot, juicy and smelling delicious. Definitely one of the top 5 burgers I've ever had. Perfect ratios of everything. Bacon perfectly crispy. Just delicious. I can't wait to go back!

With decent Mexican and burgers, Garaje is a great addition to SOMA. Located on a gritty block of Third Street north of Bryant, Garaje (Spanish for "garage") replaces Bill's Kitchen & Teriyaki. The dimly lit dining area--think old garage space turned into a casual restaurant--is sparsely decorated with street signage, giving the place a post-industrial feel. The menu is simply divided into tacos, zapatos (a burrito pressed in a panini machine), burgers, beer, and "things that go with beer." Cooked medium as ordered, the drive-in burger ($6 single, $8 double) with bacon, American cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and Thousand Island dressing was tasty and juicy. Extra napkins required. Yum. The basket of house-fried potato chips was pretty good, but not mind-blowing. Carnitas street tacos ($5 for 2) are cut-it-with-a-fork tender and moist with just the right amount of fat--not too greasy, not too lean and dry. The grilled ahi and guacamole taco ($5) was succulent and fresh. The zapatos include Pete's no meat ($6), mojo chicken ($7), and surfer Leo ($8). There is a good selection of hot sauces for the fire eating patrons. To quench your thirst, there are seven beers on tap, including Green Flash IPA, and 11 by the bottle--more than enough to extinguish the flames from hitting the Tapatio sauce too hard. Service was fast and friendly. The music was lively and upbeat, but not too loud. Note that Garaje is cash only, but there is an ATM in the restaurant. With a nice vibe--good music, great service, plenty of TVs so you can catch your choice of sporting events, tasty food, and plenty of beer--Garaje is a winner.

I've been here maybe 50 times for the excellent beer selection and delish are well priced food. Both the tacos and sandos are excellent, and "No crap on tap", just like the sign says. Get here early, or have a friend snag a table while you wait in like to order. Very casual and full of techies.

The food was great. Never had a flat burrito but it was awesome. Very nice draft beer selection. Gets crowded after a game, so get there fast.

Even being a resident of SF, I missed this establishment many times. You would not know you are passing it unless you read about it somewhere and pay attention to the address. It has a unique atmosphere. Part dive bar, part diner style. The best part about it the food! They really have the best fish tacos in town. Their zappatos (pressed burritos) are unique and delicious. For beer lovers, they have a broad range of draft options. Go check out, you won't regret it. Heads up its cash only!

Fantastic beer selection, excellent food. Everyone had a great time. Only improvement would be a way to get more beer without waiting through the line!

* Friendly people and staff * The best, tastiest and good value burger (the crazy dave double) * Most of the other food is great too including zapatos (a burrito-like thing), sandwiches and even the chicken salad * amazing beer selection * local tech and hipster crowd

Hip and cool place to hang out with friends have a couple of drinks and eat great food. Set inside an old auto workshop/garage this place has a great vibe. Lots of beer selections too.

It's near the ball park, so it can be crowded around game time. Be patient and some seats will open. Lots to choose from and the server/cashier is not too patient, but it worked for us first timers. I had a Steak Zapatos ($13, and no not as tough as shoe leather) with black beans and a Twist of Fate brew ($7.00, ouch). The food was very good for the bar atmosphere. My date had a single cheeseburger and enjoyed it along with a plain lager brew. The bill totaled $39 w/o tip, a fair price. It's fun, it's crowded and noisy, it's neighborhood, it's worth trying1

Love the Mexican food! Counter service with beer and delicious sangria. Portions are generous, simple and tasty. So excited to go back again and again.

Great food.... Wide array of menu items including tacos and burgers. We each had a Zapato and loved it! Cash only though they do have an ATM in site.

Stopped in for a double cheese burger and cold Pilsner. Went with some chips and guacamole also. Everything was awesome! I understand why this place has such great reviews! Really good food here! Highly recommend it

Great Mexican food and plenty of beers on tap at this causal restaurant/bar. Nice place to hang out with friends and hold a conversation as the music isn't too loud. The vibe of the place is great with a largely mixed crowd of people. Food is outstanding and reasonably priced.

This is good but not great fancied up gringo Mexican, heavy on wheat tortillas and sour cream. My husband who is gluten intolerant can't order much here. Feels like more of a bar than a restaurant, and it does the bar part well. At lunch and after work it is full of 20something male techies loudly drowning sorrows.

Garaje tacos are legendary. They are so legendary in fact that a recent visit compelled us to try other menu items to see if the Garaje magic extended across their culinary offerings - and we were glad we did. I ordered the crab sandwich. Now, being in San Francisco one would naturally expect a crab sandwich to be a cut above. This sandwich though approached cult status. Perfectly cooked, painted with a delicious sauce, every mouthful of this prize evoked sensations of bliss and contentment. Others in our party tried the Garaje burgers and other fish sandwiches, raving equally about their dishes. The only drawback to the Garaje experience is that the place is small and becomes packed rather quickly. Still, the kitchen is efficient and waiting tome for meals is brief. Lastly, Garaje is cash only - so come prepared. It is well worth the visit!

Interesting rustic ambiance and good selection of Mexican food including tacos, zapatos and salads. Food is a bit bland so recommend adding hot sauce (they've got a few).

Serving a wide selection of beers in Steins (1 litre / 34 fl oz), this place serves super tasty food in a relaxed atmosphere. Burgers and mexican food are all very tasty, but it's cash only, so remember to bring some rather than paying a surcharge to use their ATM machine. Also, no table reservations, so you may have to wait.

We initially stopped in here after a Giants game to have a drink and call a cab back to our hotel. We ended up staying for dinner and a few more drinks! The beers on tap here are amazing. My favorite was the strawberry ale, incredible!! Food was great too! Everything is reasonably priced with a great atmosphere to enjoy. Would recommend for sure.

This place was amazing...fresh...seasoned perfectly. I had the carne asada fries and carne asada zapato....drool. Guacamole was delicious. The meat was cooked perfect. Staff was friendly.

Was looking forward to trying this place. Food looked tasty and was a good price. Was very, very busy and noisy that evening. Maybe it was baseball night on Aug 27. The format is ... order your food / beverage at the cashier, find a table and the food gets to you somehow. I changed my mind about eating there because it was cash only; only brought enough cash for 1 person and wanted to have a meal together with my husband in a quieter location. It wasn't the eating experience I was looking for that night. Will try again some other time if I'm in the area and it's not so busy. P.s. I wasn't sure why there was a security guard outside the door.

Don't miss a chance to eat at this new Mexican cantina. We stopped in for grilled fish tacos and they were amazing! Sustainably raised talapia, locally made tortillas and great guacamole. Also tried the escabeche - spicey and satisfying. Prices are extremely reasonable. Setting is casual and relaxed. Cash only. We will be back!

I LOVE TACOS they are so good. Especially at garaje. They are as good as they are in Mexico. I like the panini ones
really REALLY good
Fortunately I had a friend who was aware of this place, otherwise I may not have known it even existed. I can't remember the name of what I had, but it was kind of a cross between a panini and a burrito. Tasty chicken inside. I loved it. I'd go here again for sure.
