Communications problems

By Meri M |

If you are familiar with the menu and you know exactly what you want, the food can be excellent. If you need explanation or clarification about various dishes, be prepared for major communications difficulties. We had a very frustrating and disappointing experience and won't return.

Fine samosas

By Rolf A |

A couple of steps down and past a long bar is dining area with superb staff and fine chefs that create great food in the Indian tradition. The Samosas are superb, as is the Tandoori Chicken and any Dal you might try. Their Lassi drinks can be thicker or thinner, depending on who makes them, I presume.

Bring your appetite!

By shoppr |

Best Indian cuisine ever! Attentive waiter recommended various dishes; scrumptious! Huge portions. Highly suggest this restaurant, just steps away from Magnificent Mile, on a Walton. YUM!

Lovely indian food

By monishan431 |

Gaylord restaurent as usual has the best indian food abroad and this one too was superb.. Loved the ambience and the wine list.. Great options for vegetarians too.. Loved the dals.

Wonderful

By JEHDD |

I’m remiss in placing this review so late. Our family of 10 were in Chicago after Christmas, 6 adults and 4 children, ranging from 1 to 7. We stopped in Gaylord without reservations or knowledge of the place. All I can say is that the people were friendly, helpful and patient. The owners and staff had no issue with the little ones wandering around and dancing. The food was delicious. My 7 year old grandson says his favorite restaurant in Chicago is Gaylord. Interesting history too as Obama used to frequent Gaylord.

Disappointing, surly service

By travchef |

Our first waiter was entirely "too familiar" and didn't allow us time to peruse the menu or chat with our guests. The food was OK, not great. Our second waiter kept trying to take away dishes before we were finished and seemed as though he wanted us to just leave. Will not return.

Take out delivered

By Richard C |

Take out delivered to my hotel. I used Uber eats as I had a coupon to use. I wasn’t disappointed. When I ordered, I was promised delivery within 35 mins. I actually received my food within 20 minutes. It was piping hot, and exactly what I’d ordered. The chicken tikka masala was great, I’d ordered extra spicy and it didn’t disappoint, I’d ordered a naan and rice, but the dish came with rice which wasn’t mentioned on the menu. All in all, a very good experience, and one I’ll repeat when next in Chicago.

Excellent experience

By Sumeet J |

The taste of the food was purely Indian. Very authentic. Looks like they have real Indian chefs. We even got Kingfisher beer on their list.

Nice food, overly attentive waiters

By MancTeacher |

I ordered a dosa here, as have had then before and my partner had the uppatham and the waters ensured we knew what these dishes were. The food was very good and there is nice lager here for those who enjoy that with curry. The waiters are attentive but overly so. Every time you put a fork down or spoon a last piece of food into your mouth, over they come and they stand and wait for you to finish, almost on duty. It feels like they are always there watching. And there is a good reason for that: they are! I appreciate good service, but leave the customers the enjoy the food as it is very good. But, the suffocating service is a bit off putting.

Crap!!

By Sarah T |

Looked for something near the Drake. Thought we had stumbled on a fine dining Indian restaurant. The first bit was ok, we were seated quick enough. Brought us some poppadoms then forgot about us. Someone came over in the dirtiest shirt to take the order and forgot about us again. Came over and tried to take the plates when we were still eating. The food was not good and the service topped it off and as a really rubbish experience. This is not fine dining. I think it's a normal buffet service so they don't know how to service the tables properly.

Average Indian Food (with corner-cutting buffet)

By KU90 |

I've been to Gaylord twice for the buffet lunch. I don't think I'll return at this point. I was very disappointed that both times the buffet lacked any boneless type of chicken dish. There was one dish that looked as if it was boneless, but it had bones in it that I and my friend accidentally ate. The flavor of the food was pretty average for Indian. The buffet does not have naan on the line, but instead is brought out. The desserts could be a little more exciting (perhaps gulab jamun?).

Attentive staff and good food

By Deepika K |

Staff are very attentive and friendly. Food is good with massive portions. We had a mixture of food... from protheh to aloo gobi to aloo papdi to mixed grill. Tasted just like home cooked food. I asked for indian tea and tasted as if it was from India. Nice atmosphere, good punjabi food and really good, friendly staff :) will be coming again soon!

A truly five star meal.

By T M |

We almost missed this place. We were just lucky enough to wander in. When we stepped inside, a couple waiting for their take out food, and they told us that the food was amazing. They were spot on. We sat in a quiet corner, which was nice. We shared the samosas, yum, and we each had the Mulligatawny Soup which was wonderful. The kindly waiter explained the spice levels, which was helpful. We had the delicious Chicken Vindaloo and the Marsala Papad. Both meals were fantastic. This restaurant definitely deserves five stars.

Aroma of Indian Spices

By Madhav a.k.a Maddy |

lunch buffet had great options, i particularly loved "Chole Masala" tasty, just reminded me of home. Try the kababs - centrally located, easy to commute

As good as Indian

By Uday M |

I loved food at Gayload India at Chicago, but had to wait for order to be served. However it was worth to wait as food was delicious and curry was spicey and saulty

Excellent Indian food in the Gold Coast area

By Miles2gob4Vsleep |

If you want excellent Indian cuisine in the gold coast /magnificent mile area this is it. It has the usual Indian lunch buffet. However food is tasty and the restaurant has and "ala carte" menu that includes North, South, East and West Indian cuisine, well prepared. Wait staff are friendly. They alerted us to a South Indian Buffet ! on Sunday evenings.

great food and ambience

By sanjay m |

excellent Indian food in Chicago. this place has very good food and a lovely bar. the service is very warm and pleasant.

The best Indian food experience out of India and England.

By BRJoe |

Gaylord Fine offers a very extensive menu, for all good tastes and for those willing to experience something unique without being (too) pricy and with a normal atmosphere. One should visit the kitchen and see the way the bake the breads. If you prefer to dine in your room, ask for a take-out, you'll get a 20% off.

Expensive. Late, Salty. Cheap.

By Kirstin R |

Despite being only 2 miles from my house this order took the full 60 minutes to deliver. Despite being a $52 order no pappadam or chutneys were provided without a $3 upcharge. Sorry to the Indian driver whose service was better than the restaurant's was. .Everything was way too salty. Only spice options were "mild" or "hot" and hot is too hot of course (and I eat hot often). The biryani was also dry. I'm not ordering from here ever again.

Good Indian food...not so good service

By Varsha K |

We were a group of four visiting Chicago for a couple of days. We had buffet for lunch once and a la' carte for dinner. Food was good, not authentic, but Indian. Much better than lot of places we have been in US. The service needs to be improved. There was only one gentleman taking order and serving food, rest were just helpers. Wait time was long and due to obvious reasons the server came across as abrupt. Well he was handling the restaurant by himself. The ambience was good and it was conveniently located near the Marriot we were staying in. The buffet and a la' carte was expensive when compared to the food and service.

Didn’t live up to the hype

By Harshal V |

Was looking for a good curry since I have limited options in Germany in this restaurant came highly recommended from some friends. The service and ambience is good And therefore have high expectations from this “fine” Indian restaurant. We ordered a few vegetarian dishes such as the Gaylord‘s paneer and Yellow daal with a mix of Indian breads. The breads were good as was the daal, however the paneer while plenty was mediocre - a little too firm and not flavorful. Also tried the makhani in the hopes of a good curry but the sauce didn’t have the spice-y flavor or the sweetness of a makhani, was quite flat. The bhel starter though was good. Think I’ll be skipping this restaurant on future trips to Chicago.

Good Indian Food

By Karan T |

The food is good but not exceptional. If you are looking for Indian food at the magnificent mile this is your best option. Since we wanted some vegetarian Indian food and this restaurant was close to our hotel we dined here twice. The better Indian restaurants are on Devon avenue but that is too far from the central part of Chicago.

Great Service and Great Food

By D0dge51 |

The staff at this restaurant went out of their way to accommodate my special diet and the service given was superb, by all members of staff, but in particular by one person, who I assumed was the Manager, who met me at the front entrance and found out from the Chef, what they could cook for me. Very friendly, efficient and professional staff. The food provided for both me and my son, was very good and excellent value for money. When in Chicago again, would definitely return.

Delicious Indian

By Jack C |

wonderful service and the food was much better than anticipated. My son was treated like royalty and he enjoyed everything that was served.

Excellent

By Sandeep Jain |

If you can't go to Devon street for any reason. Gaylord have excellent food downtown. Lunch buffet was much more than a buffet.

Very good option for Indian / Vegetarian

By Raghavan D |

In early December, I was in Chicago, attending RSNA. Fortunately, I was staying in hotel Drake in the E.Walton Street and this Gaylord India Restaurant is within a few minutes of walking distance. I remember visiting this restaurant a few years back, but back then, the food was unimpressive. However, this time - in fact in the course of one week, I visited them 4 times - and each time, had great experience. The portions were sumptuous - more than what one person can typically eat, and more importantly, the food was really fresh. They have great choices for Vegeterians and the whole team gives you a very good experience.

Best Indian Cuisine in Gold Coast/Streeterville

By Ted H |

Gaylord welcomes its customers with open arms. Good food at a reasonable price. Buffet is really good and includes dessert. The fried veggie pakoras are not so good.

Awful service and food.

By Ismail D |

The service was awful. All waiters are older, on the grumpy side and do their best to show you how little they care. For the love of god, ours refused to split our check. The other one took it upon himself to refill our drinks and, I think, was abducted by aliens. It took the manager’s personal attention to bring us pappardam (an automatic thing in most Indian restaurants.) The waiter didn’t help us choose. When I forgot the name of the naan he just stood there staring at me like a wooden idol. Not a word, not an attempt to offer something or help. I don’t think he wanted to be there. The only time he came to life was when he asked me to choose the preset tip. I chose the lowest. 15 per cent. I don’t remember tipping so low. To be fair, one waiter was nice and made an effort. The food was awful. I ordered lamb Rogan josh. It was a salty over-peppered mess. Garlic naan? Please. I couldn’t taste garlic, there was so much paprika on it. Same with pappardam and lentil wafers. I think they just randomly smeared paprika on everything. Husband’s Malai Kabab wasn’t better. He said it was too dry. When the waiter asked me if we wanted to take anything home, I almost laughed. Do yourselves a favor. Don’t come here.

Good food, tired and disinterested service

By Murli |

The quality of the food tops the tired and disinterested service. Ageing place that could use a change or twenty. Lack of decent service hampers what could be a great place for Indian food.

Used to be good

By dmazm |

This used to be my fav resturant in chicago. But lately falling off the good track. Loved their chicken biriyani

Excellent Indian in Chicago/River North

By Kristina A |

Wonderful restaurant! We eat Indian food regularly, and have tried dozens of restaurants in many cities. Often the food is good, but not 'interesting.' At Gaylord we ordered a standard, very common dish (Chicken Tikka Masala) and it was anything but! So many wonderful flavors, spices...amazing. The atmosphere is slightly upscale, yet casual neighborhood feel; family friendly.

Good food

By Wizman007 |

Went for lunch on Sunday. Food quality was good but the service was awful. Also extremely crowded. It took them 10 mins to find us a table.

Good food, but not what you order

By Theresa G |

We were very happy with the service, and the food was really tasty and plentiful. We did carefully study the menu and ordered the King's plate and the Queen's plate, to sample a combination of dishes. We got a combination, but it was not the same as the menu at all. We got plain basmati rice instead of mutter pulao, no samosas, and no korma. We did get huge portions of tender and delicious tandoori chicken, though, so we were more than filled. We also got a spinach dish that was just right, creamy with chunks of potato. We will return.

Good food. Pricey when they add tax and tips

By Pgsdeepak |

Gaylord food is usually good and it's one of my preferred places to eat in Chicago and Schaumburg. The only trouble is when you dine in, the price including tax and tips (around 30%) will look steep on an already pricey menu. I you take your family for a dinner and paying for the whole group, you are going to feel the pain if you are budget conscious. I can't fault the restaurant for at least some of it.

Great option for Indians & non Indians

By Milind M |

Great variety of food. Most Indian restaurants in US have North Indian / Punjabi food. Gaylord has this too, but also has south indian options like dosas. Food was great and service was excellent. Most people eating were non Indians.

Enjoyed

By Rob P |

Went with a group of 4 other people for the lunch buffet. Great selection, a lot of vegetarian options available. The service was . Was it the best Indian food I've ever had, no. Was it a good value and delicious? Yes.

Subterranean Indian splendor!

By p9jxh6 |

Sometimes, you just fancy a curry. You check a few reviews and think "this place will do" couldn't have have had more average expectations - but we were blown away by this place. From the apps to the mains, the fabulous bread selections and the attentive service, The Gaylord absolutely delivers. Highly recommended and legitimately gourmet Indian food - excellent.

Good Indian Food

By PCM199 |

This is a very spacious restaurant with well dressed wailers ready to welcome you. The ambiance is very good and the setting is excellent, though it is downstairs. We went for dinner and ordered 3 vegetables and naans. Everything was tasty, however, the price was on higher side as compared to other Indian restaurants in Chicago, may be due to its prime location.

Terrible food!

By R R |

Was in Chicago over the weekend and was told by a couple of folks about Gaylord, reviews were decent but in actuality the food was terrible. I had the chicken tikka masala, no flavor, worst I've ever had. The only silver lining was that the service was very good but still didn't make up for how much the food sucked. If your in the downtown area, location is convenient but I certainly won't be going back.

Great local Indian spot

By travhodges |

Great for local Indian. Always friendly and great food. The amount of food for the price is amazing and everything we have had has been tasty.

GREAT lunch buffet!

By jocelynd102 |

Wonderful lunch buffet, something for everyone! Fresh, aromatic, and really good. Make sure you come hungry!! Very nice setting, clean, tablecloths, and wonderful waitstaff Will dine here again.

Dinner

By sunworshiper190 |

Ate there tonight Very tasty Indian dishes Lamb Rogan josh & chicken tikka masala Both gluten free and high quality with tender cuts of meat Definitely recommend this restaurant staff very attentive also lovely surroundings

I would eat here again

By Tas05 |

My family and I ate dinner here. It's a short walk from the Hancock Building. Everything we ordered was very good. The service was also good. The food isn't overly spicy, so it's good even if you don't like spicy food. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

The best

By edsatty |

We are somewhat Indian food snobs, and have had it across the U.S. and abroad. This place has some of the best we have had anywhere. When we are in Chicago, we typically eat here at least once if not twice. All of the dishes we have tried consistently have thick flavorful sauces. Service can be hit or miss, but the food more than makes up for it.

Expensive but superb

By Colire |

I eat lots of curries and the meal I had tonight was superb. Menu doesn't offer lots of choice but the quality of the food was outstanding. Lamb Kadai, Sag Aloo with boiled rice I can see a return trip before I leave Chicago.

Good Indian Fix

By Andres A |

Craving for some hot and spicy food. Butter chicken can never go wrong. Traditional food it is. Loved the lentils and the spinach chicken. Naans were fresh and soft. perfect food for the cold weather

poor price-performance

By hansi l |

When asked, only one dish was not spicy, but it was spicy after all. They then brought yogurt, but charged for it. Far too little rice for three people. Too expensive overall.

Indian food all the way!!!

By sankar01_in |

After a long day at the Navy Pier and the fun around,we decided to settle for an authentic Indian food in the near vicinity. Its there bang on the Walton street so you cant miss it. It has a nice ambience enhanced by the paintings of Indian Maharajas and dancing queens. The restaurant serves North Indian,Punjabi and South Indian cuisines. Authentic? hmm...Yes, to some extent. Nice ambience, friendly and quick service by the hostesses, tasty food are the high lights of this Indian Fine Dining restaurant. Oh. Yes i should make a mention here about the dessert "Orange Ice cream". Literally the ice cream is embedded in to the orange peel and nicely decorated and presented. It was tasty too. The prices are slightly on the high side, but its money worth. Never miss this eat out when you are in the Chicago.

A Taste of India In Downtown Chicago

By Sandra C |

On our recent visit to Chicago, my husband and I took our good friend to Gaylord India. I had read somewhere that the Gaylord restaurant franchise had actually started in India and had gained so much popularity, it was brought to the US,(really don't know how reliable that info is!) plus I had read several good reviews, so we decided to try it out. A nice place overall---dark wood paneling, linens, some ethnically- inspired art, etc. but nothing really "unique". Some would even call the décor "outdated". Oh well! We just wanted good food! We ordered some "signature" cocktails made with whiskey...not my favorite. My husband finished mine and I drank water. My husband and I started with some vegetable samosas and our friend ordered samosa "chat". I thought it looked unappetizing and he said it was too spicy for him. For entrees, our friend chose the variety meat platter and my husband and I had the lamb vindaloo and another lamb dish similar to tikka masala. This was all rounded out with garlic nan and rice. Good choices, however, had we not had some experience with what to order, we would have had to ask because our waiter gave no suggestions . Overall, it was a fair dining experience. The food, while good, wasn't exceptional. The service, while decent, wasn't outstanding. (Of course there were several large families there at the same time and the focus seemed to be on them. Understandable, especially with small children moving about.) We didn't leave hungry by any means but we did leave a bit "underwhelmed". I think it's probably a really good place for regulars and families. We just wanted a little more.

Wonderful food and amazing staff!

By Nikki M |

The food is exceptional. And they were so great to take a reservation for our large party of 18…the ambiance was perfect and they even had dimmed lighting as the night went on. Very quaint and the staff was very attentive. Would definitely return again!

Go here every time I'm in chicago!

By freddiecat7 |

Love eating here. The staff very nice, a nice salad & appetizer bar included with your dinner. Very authentic Indian food. Yummy!

Large menu

By Lelia G |

Ate here for dinner, solo, on business trip. I am gluten free. They do have gluten free menu. No gluten free appetizers. Somewhat pricey for amount of food received. Enjoyed meal. Kind of creepy, multiple guys waiting on table, seemed to rush me.

Fantastic food, excellent swrvice

By NorthStar166504 |

The food was wonderful and our wait staff was fantastic. Chicken tikka masala and naan was the best. Thank you for the great food.

Lots of food, good but not great

By Chopstick224 |

Large portions, for pretty reasonable prices, and it was good, but not great. Chicken was flavorful, but tough. Service spotty.

Good dinner!

By moksha51 |

Great location and a good place for a quiet dinner! On Sunday night there were a few people. Service was professional and efficient. We ordered thalis. They were tasty and well done. Nans were excellent. Beware this is north Indian cuisine so it is creamy.

Enjoyed

By Indu_11 |

Went for lunch buffet. A lot of vegetarian options. Nice place for Indian food. Samosa was very tasty, spicy and crispy.

Food was okay, service was down!

By CharmsAG |

We were in Chicago for an overnight and craving for some Indian cuisine for dinner. This is the one that was closest to the mall and didn't had to walk that far or drive. So we came in, there was a party and we got lucky that we got a seat (well they said we don't have to make reservation since it just for 2 person). The food really was okay but it was expensive. Average of $15-25 a meal not including drinks. Our server was so busy entertaining the Indian people next to us that I had to ask her 5 times that we were ready to order. And so, we had to wait 15mins. to get our drinks and another 35mins. to eat. With that experience, we don't recommend this restaurant.

Fab indian food

By Y0rochelle |

Having been out of the uk for a week needed in indian food fix. Really lovely & cosy place. Service excellent & actually really good food. Great spice & flavour. Would defo go back next visit. Nan bread so good.

Outstanding Indian Food

By Jennifer P |

Hands down, the BEST Indian food to ever pass my lips. I was very encouraged when 90% of the patrons were Indian. Perfect blend of spice and savory in my chicken tika masala. The nan was light and crisp. Waitstaff was efficient and polite. For the quality of food and service the price was fine.

Excellent Indian food at a reasonable price

By Skyrider_West |

We discovered Gaylord quite by chance while looking for a restaurant near Oak Street Beach. We both opted for the buffet, which featured a number of hot dishes plus a section with salad items and sambals. Our waiter brought freshly cooked tandoori chicken and nan bread - the chicken was served on a hot platter and continued to sizzle for several minutes after it was served. Dessert was fresh fruit and "homemade" mango ice cream (one of several flavors of ice cream made in-house daily). Cost was $13.95 each, a great value.

Not too bad for downtown Chicago

By Kartik G |

So this is the extension of the first gaylord restaurant that was opened in New Delhi back in the days ( now closed), which for the ones who do not know, was a big deal in the 80s and 90s in Delhi. So not to walk in with high expectations, my colleague and I tried this on Sunday night. Good ambience and clean. We came for dinner so there was no buffet. Prices seems to be right for a downtown restaurant, maybe a $ extra here and there but not a biggie. Food was good enough . They do use cream like any other fancy Indian restaurant, so if u guys want to have some authentic taste then order without cream. The Rajasthani roti and rumali roti are a definite try. Also we had the orange kulfi which is definitely amazing and first I have seen. Service is good but the restaurant was empty so can't really tell how it will be during busy time. Waiters were courteous as well. I would come back if I had no other choice to try for Indian or one cuisine restaurant

Good food

By trvlisliife |

Its a good place for food and right in downtown chicago. The carry out is fast as well. Order the chicken tikka with gravy

Just OK

By Clevlander |

This is an OK large restaurant in a basement location that you can see from the street. Traditional staples like Chicken Tikka Masala and Vegetable curry dishes are available. Alcohol is offered. Service was slow and we waited for over an hour to get our food.

Just a good Indian restaurant

By Emile K |

We had Diner with 4 persons in very large restaurant (doesn't really show from outside!). Staff was nice and took the time to explain the (very) long Menu. We are Indian lovers (and experts) and we would rate this as 7 out of 10 (Incl. Price..not overly expensive= good!) ..so Just a good Indian restaurant.

"Delicious Indian Food"

By Rami Y |

The Food served in Gaylord Restaurant on Chicago's Walton Street is always first-rate. Unfortunately, in the U.S., and unlike in the U.K., the Indian cuisine is not well appreciated yet. It takes several visits to an Indian Restaurant serving good and authentic food that one gets hooked to the refined and tasteful food. The meals served in this restaurant are always appetizing and well served. The degree of spice is well controlled to please the American diners.

Poor service, good food

By Susan A |

We obviously had the worst waiter there. Our food took nearly an hour! He forgot my glass of wine, and rarely even came by the table. I would have complained to the manager, but my companion hates that because it makes a bad visit worse. His food was very good, mine was okay, but I was so angry I couldn't enjoy it. Surprising that no manager was aware of our really long wait. It wasn't even busy, and other diners came and went while we waited.

Good place for Indian food in Chicago

By AsG |

Went there for dinner one night, the salad bar is good. Food is not made with actual amounts of Indian spice to suit Chicago ppl. But decent for a good meal.

Miserable waiter, tasteless food!!

By Axe1970 |

In Chicago for a day, thought I'd try this place out. This was probably the worst service I have ever received, the waiter in the grey suit never smiled and treated us like we were a burden! When the food did arrive it was mostly tasteless and bland, not at all what I expect from Indian food, definitely did not leave a tip! Avoid at all costs.

Go there for the lunch buffet!

By Tanya G |

Yum, yum and yum again! Everything I tried (I have been there over 10 times total) has been fantastic. I was especially surprised by the "salty lassi" - a yogurt drink. The Naan bread was hot, the buffet entrees hot, fragrant. Very good service.

Good Indian Food

By Prasanna1965 |

This hotel serves good variety of both veg & non veg Indian food. Food quality is good. Staff is courteous & helpful. It is a good restaurant in terms of both, quality & quantity.

terrible food, terrible service. with all the lousy reviews below

By anonanon1000 |

its hard to understand how this place could still be in business. dry breads, flavorless and sloppy curries; service was disorganized but at least tolerable, but the manager there was so rude that its hard to imagine that someone like that could even be employed

Nice place

By Babar K |

Food was good. Shrimp biryani was very tasty. We were seated quickly and the owner was very friendly. Owner mentioned the meat was halal, big plus.

Get your tasty & authentic Indian food fix

By Ketan Deshpande |

Located just off Chicago’s famous Magnificent mile this restaurant offers excellent and authentic Indian food. Fantastic food quality and taste. Plenty of seating options, great for larger groups. Small bar area is ok as well.

Pleasant Experience

By sorabh |

I am an Indian traveller but like Indian Food. Enjoyed the Food specially Kali Dal and Orange Kulfi. Good Indian Food away from India. Mr Kumar need to be complimented for his serve and pleasant manners. Loved it

Food not good

By 229Kathy_901 |

We went to this restuarant at the recommendation from our hotel. The waiter was very impatient, not giving us time to look at the menu and seemed annoyed when we asked questions about the food (one of the guests had never eaten Indian food). We order two orders of the queen feast and only received one order, which we ended up sharing. When we got our bill it was for someone else, our bill should have been less that $40 and the bill was over $85, even when they revised the bill it was still not correct. The staff stood and watched every move even when we were sitting at the table eating and talking, it was very uncomfortable. I have had this type of food numerous times and this was the worst I have had. The chicken was burnt and so dry we could not eat it, the lamb was also overcooked and dried out. The only dish that was good was the chichen masala and that is because it was in sauce.

Fine Indian cuisine: Gaylord, Chicago

By Pramod53 |

For tasty, fine Indian cuisine you should visit Gaylord. It is a well spacious, clean & peaceful restaurant on Walton street in Chicago. Popular varieties of Indian cuisine like North Indian, South Indian & Punjabi dishes are available. If you go through the name Karahi Chicken, Murg Makhani, Kofta Lajawab, Bombay Aloo, Paneer Kulcha etc., gives a feeling that we are in good restaurant of metro city in India. Service is good, staff is polite & cultured. It is equipped with bar facility. Near reception there is collection of photo frame on the wall with pics of Indian actors & actresses. This is also a attraction point of the restaurant. Overall one can enjoy here.

Still Delivering on 7 Cylinders

By aender |

As part of our journey of discovering as many of the restaurants within our local area we decided that we wanted to try Indian, as it is one of my younger sons favorite cuisines. Not being to India to compare, but we've been to London many times and have sampled various restaurants there we use London's food as the standard. As Gaylord's is a 5 minute walk we had to try it, especially as this place has been around for ages. We arrived around 5:30 and the place was pretty much empty but we were greeted and sat in a booth. Looking over the menu we saw most the typical choices one can get, plus some others we have never had. Our server, who I tended to think was also a manager came over to get our drink order at which time we order two iced teas and a the Keema Samosa. I mention the iced teas as they were brought right away, but we had to ask three times for sweetener at which point we gave up and my wife dug into her purse to pull some out. FYI, she always keeps some there for when we travel abroad. It wasn't explained to us at first but there is a small table that has a few items on it that you can get, but it consists of some type of chip, strange carrots and two sauces. Basically pretty poor presentation, even if it was for free. The Keema Samosa is a meat samosa which we found very tasty and the meat well seasoned. It was served with two sauces, green and red. I don't know what the red sauce was but it was delicious. It had a touch of sweetness, smokiness and heat. Overall very good. My son had the Chicken Vindaloo, which he said was very good with right amount of heat and a good sized portion as well. We also ordered the Rogan Josh. This was recommended by our server and we would order it again it was a dish we have never had. It was along the same lines as the vindaloo only milder. The service was overall good, but one measure we use is whether we had to ask for refills on our iced teas. Good service is you don't, but outside of that is was fine. The place itself is in need of a bit of updating. It was dark inside which sometimes makes it difficult to see the real condition of a place. Question, would we come back. Yes, especially to try some of the other dishes we have not been exposed to. I rated the place a 4/5, which explains the title. To get the extra point, or cylinder

A Gem

By Annagins |

Gaylord has been in its Gold Coast location for many years, and after one visit I could see why. Service was friendly and efficient, the dining room was very comfortable (nice enough for a date, but not too fancy for impromptu family dinner), and the food was very good. Gaylord says their focus is North Indian cuisine, but I saw quite a few Southern Indian dishes on the menu and felt like I'd need to come back again and again just to keep trying new things. Since it was our first visit, we stuck with the basics. The tandoori chicken was cooked perfectly, vindaloo had just the right level of spice and the lamb and grilled vegetables were not greasy -- a big plus in my book, as too much oil can weigh down and ruin an Indian dish. The flavors were balanced and on point, as were the prices. Most entrees were under $20 and wines by the glass were carefully selected and around $8 or $9 for a nice size pour. Gaylord seems to be a very smartly run restaurant and I feel lucky to have it in the neighborhood.

Great Indian Lunch Buffet

By dsptravel |

I love Indian food and had a great lunch buffet at Gaylord Fine Indian Cuisine at Michigan Avenue and Walton Street. The food was well done and there were plenty of vegetarian options. About 10 people waited on me, but the buffet was only $13.95. For dessert they had the best gulab jamun I have ever tasted. Thanks for a very satisfying and quick lunch!

It is 13.95$ lunch buffet but sucks

By EleUdinTrip |

I had tried Indian food millions of times while living or visiting london but oh boy, really nothing was good! Don't get me wrong, nothing disgusting but a 13 zagat rating, no more! I never liked buffets, after this experience I will never go back to one! Not an happy camper

Looking for Indian food near Magnificent mile?

By saradabhagavathy |

Staying in Residency inn, this was the closest restaurant for Indian food; so we had been here for dinner on a Friday night. We had booked a table earlier; anyway when we reached the place it was not full; but by and by it got crowded. Both south Indian and north Indian foods are served here. We had ordered Taj Mahal beer, pomegranate martini, assorted bajjis, cheese Manchurian, different rotis and naans, methi mutter malai, dhal makhani and so on. Rice was complimentary. All the items were good and sumptuous. We had to pack up a good amount of it. Service was pleasant; but there were some avoidable delays; looks like they were short of hands.

A good Indian food treat!

By Nikunj J |

# Indian #indianfooover # vegetarian There are plenty of Indian food restaurants in Chicago but not many of them will impress you, assuming you are a fan of real Indian food. This place, though, is a among the better ones. I would rate it as - Ambience/location - 8/10, food - 8/10, service -7/10 and overall - 8/10. Located in the downtown, just a few mins walk from the water front and tall buildings in Chicago. It's an underground setting but a big place, easily having around 40+ tables. Nice ambience, nothing fancy though. Food is good and prepared by Indian chefs (yes, I have the knack of knowing if food is indeed prepared by an Indian chef :)). I went with my friends and we orders mixed of veg and non-veg options. samosa chaat was the highlight and main course was good too. Real Indian spices, very close to what I get in india. Apparently this place has a few South Indian cuisine items as well (which is not easy to find otherwise), but it mostly caters to North Indian food lovers. Menu is exhaustive, a slightly highly priced than similar restaurants in Chicago. But overall, indeed a good taste, may remind you some of the best food you had in India :)

Excellent lunch buffet

By CZY4JAO |

Great price for downtown Chicago. 1/2 block off Michigan Ave. Very attentive service and very good variety of food, all hot and fresh. We make this a destination each time we're in Chicago.

Excellent, reliable favorite

By Lebowski93 |

Have been faithful customers for over 20 years. They offer an amazing lunch buffet where you are able to sample so many delicious dishes. The items on the buffet include the standard favorites and a rotating variety of others as well. The staff is helpful; one gentleman told me he has been with them for 30 years. If you have the opportunity to visit do! Plenty of gluten free options which they will help you navigate.

Upscale Indian

By KCS728 |

The overall atmosphere here is much nicer than most local Indian restaurants. The papadum "bar" was fun and had unlimited mango chutney and other sauces. My tandoori mahi-mahi was delicious, and my family enjoyed the chicken vindaloo and chili chicken. The nan was pretty standard, and the samosas were good.

Don't be dissuaded from dining at the Gaylord by the somewhat drab and non-magnetic appeal of the front entrance

By TwinCreek |

Don't be dissuaded from dining at the Gaylord by the somewhat drab and non-magnetic appeal of the front entrance to the restaurant. Granted, the interior is not flashy, which can sometimes mask the food quality. But, as first-timers, we were duly impressed by the quality and quantity of our meals. Three senior adults visited around 5:00 on a Friday night. Each ordered something different: spicy, less spicy, and not spicy. My husband had the Lamb LAMB VINDALOO; I had the KERALA FISH CURRY; our guest had a chicken dish. We also ordered two naan breads (one was enough). All meals were good; plates were cleaned. The wait staff was extremely attentive and polite. In fact, there was a middle-aged woman (grandmother??) not monitoring her 4 year old child very well. The little girl immediately ran up to the table with carrots and other nibbles. She started grabbing at carrots, other vegetables and plates. The woman kept saying not to do that, but neglected to enforce the order by removing the child from the table. The little girl continued her behavior. When we were asked by the wait staff to partake in the food display, we mentioned that the girl had basically fumbled with everything, so we weren't interested. The staff apologized and took the food into the kitchen - presumably to exchange with fresh (not sure if they did). But it certainly was not the staff's fault for the ignorance of the woman, yet they apologized for her behavior and ignorance. If we lived around Chicago, we would definitely make a return visit for dinner.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY

By k s |

Myself and my wife went for dinner around 6pm on Monday 6th February. when we arrived the place was empty The food was OK to say the least but the bill did not match what we got. I had the Tandoori mix and had to order a separate sauce to go with it at a cost of $8 (for a simple sauce) my wife got chicken dish (not sure what it was) I asked the waiter if one rice would be enough for the 2 of us which he said would be, then the cost on the bill was again $8 for a small bowl of rice (absolutely shocking). $10 for some bread mix. GIVE THIS PLACE A WIDE BERTH ITS NOT WORTH THE MONEY.

Not great

By Steph847 |

The food was poor quality in huge quantities. The starter lacked flavour and so I didn't eat most of it. The restaurant staff didn't query that I hadn't extent much. No sooner had the starter plates been cleared than the main course arrived. We had ordered a special rice to go with ours. 5 mins in the waiter brought ordinary rice and told us it was included. When it was clear that we already had plenty of rice he simply took it away, not sure why they bothered to cook it in the first place when we had clearly ordered an alternative. The main course was better than the starter but my curry was full of small chicken bones which was rather off putting. I'm a big fan of Indian food back in the UK but this just wasn't at the same level. Not cheap either.

Reliable and great value

By Norris A |

I have not eaten in Gaylord since they moved from their Clark Street location and then it was only for their lunch buffet where understandably the spices we muted. I have however been ordering take out from them (mainly through Dining-In which no longer has Gaylord on it's fast-shrinking roster) for over 10 years. They quite often forgot something in my order which was annoying. One time it was my entree (doh! slaps forehead) but mostly it was the Papadums which are the staff of life. However they have tightened up of late. We order once a month on average and the bill is usually $110 but some of that is tax and tip and delivery charge so it's more like $85 worth of food. Over the years and especially during their move to E Walton we have ordered from other Indian stores and found them wanting when it comes to spicing and quality of meat. We always order the same thing, pretty much; 4 orders of Papdums (2 per order). Light and crisp and dry. Aloo gobi -potatoes and cauliflower (now gone from the menu but replaced by a sag aloo with yummy spinach and potato) This comes with an order of Basmati rice. 2 more orders of rice-always light and fluffy Keema naan bread. Good heavens is this a tasty mop for the last remnants of curry clinging to the side of the bowl! I lamb vindaloo which I order "Indian hot". The meat is trimmed of fat and slow-cooked. The curry is a fiery red with a flavor that grabs you by the hair and slams your head down on the table. I keep a supply of bandaids nearby and lots of cold beer and papadums to help me through. A box of tissues nearby too as your nose will run. I chicken tikka- again succulent chunks of spiced breast meat. The papadums come with two large containers of a fiery onion, tomato and cilantro salad. We ask and receive a tub of cool mint yogurt and one of tamarind sauce for an added flavor punch (no charge) This meal, a heavy sack of food lasts us three full nights which adds to the value equation. There's no way we could ever eat all of this at one sitting in the restaurant without asking for large doggie bags. Generous portioning! Flavor-wise it is never disappointing and the consistency is something we are always impressed by.

Amazing food,awsome service.If in Chicago, don't miss.

By Lovewins |

On Memorial day evening, after an enjoyable but exhauting Segaway tour, we went to Gaylord with our dear friends Raj and Maitri.I am always a bit skeptical about "established" Indian restaurants particularly in "high end" places in big cities,in terms of service as some such restaurants treat you as if they were doing a favor of serving you.To my plesant surprise, the service at Gaylord was par excellence. All servers went above and beyond our expectations. And food?Probably the best tandoori aloo paratha I have ever eaten.I brought is back to NJ and ate after 2 days and yet it was as tasty as it was when served there.Everything else was also very fresh, tasty and yet neither greasy nor oily. The Orange kulfi was a delight.Thank you Raj and Maitri for your treat and thank you Gaylord team.Keep it up.

Decent Indian Food In the Chicago Suburbs

By rumasan |

I had been to this restaurant recently with my friend for Lunch. The place had a decent spread for Lunch buffet. It had both North Indian and South Indian items. The service was OK - I would not say great. I liked the taste in this place. Since I am a vegetarian, I was worried about the choices that I might get. I was not disappointed. The desserts section also had a good number of varieties. I was happy with the experience.

Great curry

By Elizabeth H |

Always visit when in Chicago. Staff are very attentive and knowledgeable. Great menu. Choice of buffet or a la carte menu.

Great place to dine

By Vinithra R |

In spite of the mixed reviews, we decided to try this restaurant once and we were not disappointed. Since we are vegetarians, the staff recommended Baingan Bhartha and Paneer Bhurj. Both of these were really good and would definitely recommend these to anyone.

Not worth it

By Mira P |

Average in every respect. The samosas were good, though, as was the masala chai. The rest of the food was not very good, which was quite surprising. Had the roti, naan, dal and veg curry. Staff were ok.

Excellent

By Andreas W |

Very complete menu with specialties from the many parts of Indian cuisine with frightful and attentive staff. Perfect location for occasional visitors and locals alike.

Excellent lunch buffet

By Tom B |

The lunch buffet was quite delightful. It has an excellent assortment of traditional dishes served buffet style as well as Tandoori chicken and naan bread served at the table. The small salad bar as well as the fruit and desserts were a nice touch. The spinach curry was my favorite. Although it's a bit pricey on a lunch scale, it's worth every penny. We will not need to eat anything for dinner tonight! The setting is also quite relaxing yet only a few steps from the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue. Finally, the server was friendly and eager to please.

Chef Needs training

By Vegan World traveller |

Good ambience but quality of food is Lacking. Had dinner there two days in a row. First day I tried south India Uthappam It was half done, I could smell the dough. The side orders were good. Next day I ordered North India fare, Malai Kofta - it was no where close to being authentic. The kofta again was half done, the Malai was fine though. Also ordered Manchurian pakora - it was good but was served with no chutney or anything. Well staffed and courteous no issues there.

Tasty take out

By sewingone |

I got in to the city late, but wanted some real food that included some spice. I ordered at the bar and had a cold bottle of Voss water during my very short wait time. I ordered samosas, lamb rogan gosh and garlic naan. The portion was a nice size and rice was included. My food was hot and tasty, on the spicy side like I like but may be too spicy for others. The food was packaged well for my trip back to my hotel.

Just perfect

By Melanie D |

Very friendly and knowledgeable service. Helped me pick between 2 dishes. Generous portions, enough for 2 people. To go was quick. The pictures I posted are the leftovers; it's a lot of food.

Best restaurant for Indian food

By Anita T |

Serves good Indian food . Especially their lunch buffet is great worth the value . Must recommended for South Indian food especially

Must Try the Lunch Buffet

By Christy C |

My husband and I sort of stumbled upon this restaurant looking for a nice relaxing lunch spot. We were pleasantly surprised by the level of service, value, and quality of food. We both opted for the buffet based on the large amount of vegetarian offerings, which turned out to be flavorful and perfectly cooked. Our server brought a basket of delicious Naan bread to the table and recommended sauce pairings to complement our food choices. Will definitely be back to the Gaylord next time we're in Chicago.

What a chance discovery

By Andre_mainville |

Left the Drake and was looking for a restaurant as I was super hungry. This looked clean and it was OPEN, I love trying Indian food all over as it's a lot like Italian food - every kitchen has it's own recipe. We settled on the pakora ( too much batter), But the Saag Paneer was the best I have ever Eaten. The butter chicken was rich and really nice. I will be returning, many times!!!!

Outstanding food in a pleasant setting

By sylvrtong |

While they did not have my 'standard' on the menu (Korma) the food was quite good and the service impeccable. The size of the portion was more than I could eat, and the mixture of spices and texture was superlative.

Best meal I had in Chicago

By AnnOttawa_Canada |

In Chicago for 3 nights. Disastrous meal in a French bistro the first night and every restaurant except the steak restaurants seemed to be booked up for the next 2 nights. My husband and I are real curry addicts and so the Gaylord, being a short walk from our hotel seemed the obvious choice. We had something called aloo papda (or something like that) which we had never had before as an appetizer which was delicious, then a tandoori mixed grill - hot and delicious and then we had a lamb dish in a creamy sauce. The lamb was incredibly tender and the curry sauce was wonderful. In addition we had a really tasty tandoor chicken masala, rice and a nan. Way too much food but we did our very best to eat most of it as the taste was exceptional. Service was terrific also. Don't be put off by the impression you're entering an office block. The place was very busy by 8.30

Exotic!

By tyson |

For exotic's lovers food this place is for you. In our trip for two weeks, we have the pleasure to visit this restaurant.

Great India Food, would do it again.

By sshoe8 |

After walking past the restaurant being able to look down into the bar area decided to give it a try as other reviews were positive. The food was outstanding and the service was good. Had the fish curry however if was loaded cilantro which I do not like and had to pick out, otherwise the fish and sauce were very favorable. My wife ordered naan which was very good. With the appetizers was way more food than we could eat and traveling did not have the chance to take the left overs for later. The menu was great and had a number of items that would like to try if we are back that way.

Good Indian food in Chicago

By Aaron C |

Came across this restaurant by accident and so glad I did! The food was excellent and lots of it! Had dinner with a work college, great range of food, did not want anything too spicy! Our waiter gave us lots of recommendations, all great. I will visit again when in the city.

Problematic service and billing

By DJSad |

Our waiter brought 2x the number of appetizers we had ordered (and we were billed for them). He forgot to order the main dish requested by one guest. We decided not to complain about the wrong no. of appetizers and the problem with the one dish because we wanted to leave after the meal was over. Yet we had to wait another 40 minutes just to pay the check. Their particular credit card system of payment broke down. Our main grievance it that we never even received an apology. This was a long-planned family event. We counseled our relatives to go back to their hotel while we (the hosts) stayed and waited for the manager to figure out his card payment system. This was our second visit to Gaylord. We will not go back. .

Simple exterior, complex flavors

By John H |

I was here with 40 South Asians, a group that might be more discriminating than most when it comes to Indian food, and I heard not a single complaint. I thought the food was delicious and varied, providing plenty of options for the vegetarians in our group, and a few chicken dishes for the rest (we were on a somewhat limited budget, but you couldn't tell that from the variety we were offered). Rajan Pasawala, the manager, is gracious and made sure everything in the dining room was calm and professional; the food was replenished without fanfare. the room itself was pleasant, the lighting not brash, the acoustics just right. I nice little bar at the entrance. Very pleasant, overall.

Excellent food, excellent service

By 327Aries |

Went there for a late lunch with business colleagues recently. We arrived about 10 minutes before the restaurant was supposed to close for lunch. One of us had not arrived yet, but they told us not to worry, he will be admitted anytime he arrives. Instead of the buffet, we ordered off the menu. We ordered four different main dishes, samosas and garlic naan. Every dish was made perfectly and tasted delicious. We were not rushed at all and were told to take our time and enjoy ourselves. The whole experience was very pleasant, the food was delicious and service was excellent. I'd say this is one of the best Indian restaurants that I'd been to in the US

Gaylord Chicago

By govindbabu |

I was with friends at Chicago for a conference. We were staying at the Millenium Knickerboeker hotel off the Millenium avenue. Some of our Indian friends wanted to have Indian food during our stay ,thus we visited 3 of them that serve Indian cuisine. The first day dinner was at the Gaylord as it was within walking distance from our hotel. The restaurant is situated in minus one level. The restaurant is full of Indian artifacts . The tables are well spaced out and can be arranged based on the size of the group. There is a bar as well. The variety is quite alright, the staff are courteous and helpful. The food for somebody not eating Indian everyday is just ok but we dint find many dishes vey good .but is a convenient place to eat Indian food.

Excellent Indian food and service

By scribe46 |

This was our second visit to the Gaylord. We were out-of-towners staying up the street. We love Indian food, and it was so convenient. However, it also turned out to be a great dining experience. We were there late on a cold night and there were hardly any other diners. This may be why the service was very attentive, and our waiter, Arif, guided us through the menu to accomplish a specific goal: we could not take "home" leftovers to our hotel. So, he helped us figure out the amount of food to order that was just right but with variety, and had them cut down on the amount of rice to serve. The menu has many choices, mostly standard for an Indian restaurant. We thought they prepared the dishes well, and the flavors did not disappoint. We ordered the saag paneer, aloo ghobi, murg mak hani and basmati rice. The sauces on the plate were mopped up with warm garlic naan. We left satisfied with no wasted food. On both visits, several years apart, the atmosphere and service has been a pleasure, and the food, while not out of the mainstream Indian fare for us, was done as well as we've ever had it! Warm tummies for a cold night.

Delicious; friendly staff

By BlueDevilOKC |

Walking along Michigan Avenue I stumbled upon Gaylord India. I was certainly glad that I did. Although the restaurant was slammed on Diwali, they found a spot for me at the bar and gave me great service. The lamb vindaloo was delicious. I would gladly eat here again.

Very good Indian Food

By Jkahn059 |

While staying in downtown we were missing the home food so we Google Indian restaurants and found out that Gaylord restaurant is around the corner of our hotel. We went there and have great food. Service was slightly slow but overall experience was great.

Hot India food

By noel r |

Not the best India food in Chicago Buy you get a lot for your money. The lunch is all you can eat and is Cheap.

Poor service, good food

By Gaurav G |

We loved the food at this place but the staff and their service was terrible which spoilt the whole experience. From the guy who took the order, the server and the manager ..they all had no respect for customers. They all were really old age people with a lot of attitude and behaved in a rude manner. Staff behaviour was worst when we spoke to the manager about a 20 % discount on their website. Avoid going to this place unless you want to spoil your evening.

Great Indian Place!

By TravelEatSleepz |

I'm from India and loved all the food here! Portion sizes were decent and the flavor was on point for being in the US. A little bit on the pricier side, but that should be expected with it being near Michigan Ave.

This place was amazing

By Beth P |

Service was impeccable, food was luxurious. Prices were very reasonable. Best Indian food I've ever had!

I ate here nearly every day while pregnant

By k2xsara |

It was a loooong time ago. When I was pregnant with my daughter, who is now 28, I craved the food here. I worked nearby, so visited the lunch buffet 2-3-4 times a week! One day I recall seeing three pregnant women in the restaurant. It is not a surprise that my daughter likes Indian food. I don't visit Gaylord as often anymore because it isn't as conveniently located to where I live. It just isn't as convenient for lunch, and I never seem to wat to go for dinner. It's still good though. And I particularly recommend the restaurant if you are pregnant.

Friday Night Curry

By PWF1957 |

In Chicago on my own on business so decided to do the UK thing and go for a Friday night Curry. This place was jsut around the corner from my Hotel. Good Bangladeshi food, great starter Pakora's with Manchurian sauce and Lamb Kadai with Naan

Lunch buffet OK

By NOmadfolk2 |

We've been here in the past a couple of times and were very pleased with what we ordered from the menu, but for Sunday lunch, only the buffet ($13.95) was available. We've eaten from plenty of Indian buffets. This one was mediocre. Many of the items were so soupy that they just all mixed together on the plate--so generally muddled flavors. The saag paneer and the tandoori chicken were, however, tasty standouts, and a generous basket of naan was waiting on the table when we returned from the buffet. If one is looking for a filling, cheap lunch (by Gold Coast standards), Gaylord's lunch buffet will not disappoint--but if you want a distinctive Indian meal, go for dinner.

Perfect warm feeling food for a winter dinner

By K K |

Miserable weather in Chicago, soWARM food is what I desired. I have been here before but the doorman at the Four SEasons recommended this. We had a "curry" of a night and went back to the lobby bar at the hotel for more after dinner drinks....just a beautiful meal. I suggest asking the waiter "what gets ordered more" and just go crazy with what ever he brings you. Lots of vegetarian choices as one of my guests was a vegetarian and was delighted with his choices.

Good food. Great value.

By David M |

This is a below ground level Indian restaurant accessed from the street. Food was good Indian fare and service was attentive. Value was very good compared to other restaurants in the area. Ambiance is pretty good. It’s a little dark and there’s the traditional Bollywood music playing. I would have stayed longer but there were 3 kids from a family disrupting the peace and no one seemed like this needed correcting. I had chicken tikka.

Good service good food

By Deepti111 |

Food is good, but not as great as some people are raving about. I didn't like their appetizers as they have same batter for everything. Mix veg Pakora had bell peppers and zucchini slices. No paneer or cauliflower. May be they are thinking of non-indian eaters... We ordered 2 plates of Pakora...it is OK but my 12 year old says her Dad makes better Pakora as good as India House. Portion sizes are OK. Each entree is for each person. If 4 people go to visit order at least 3 entrees and one Dal. Taste is good. We ordered one paneer dish "Gaylord Paneer' we were told it is great tasting dish. It was described as Kadhai paneer.. What's great about the dishes here is paneer. Soft fresh and delish...but not the taste of the overall dish. It is 7/10. Saag Paneer is great here, paneer soft, not too spicy hot. 9/10 Baingan Bharta is nice, we all agreed some other places make much better...It is 6/10 We loved their Tandoori roti. Salad /Papad Bar..their disco size Papad are fun for kids. I would go again during their buffet and try other dishes as if I try their a la carte I will go bankrupt. Simple plain restaurant with good food in Downtown Chicago...

Fantastic Food

By David P |

This is some of the best Indian food you can buy. Service from Mr India (Ariff) is the best. Sweb is one of the managers and he runs a good restaurant. Iqbal is also a good server. The food never disappoints, and is alway fresh, tasty and plentiful. Rajarn is also a good manager here. We visit this amazing place every time we are in Chicago. A+++++

This is the one restaurant in Chicago we HAVE to visit whenever we are in town. Good food and a relaxed atmosphere. Attentive staff. We are former Chicagoans and have an almost forty-year history with this restaurant.

Delicious Indian Food

By DrDee2014 |

When you go to an ethnic restaurant and it's filled with people of that ethnicity, you know that the food is authentic and that's Gaylord. The menu is huge. Rather than trying to choose, I just ordered one of the special dinners, which came with lamb prepared in a couple of ways, chicken, fish, vegetables, rice, and nam. Everything was delicious with plenty to take home. Service was okay once it started, but was slow starting. Management should hire another server or two. Reasonably inexpensive for the North Michigan Avenue area; $95 including tip and tax for 3 diners.

Lunch buffet

By Reed S |

This is a good Indian restaurant just off Michigan Ave a few blocks west of the Westin Hotel from the John Hancock building. It down below street level. Its design is more formal. Now on to the food experience, they have an excellent lunch buffet, that offers many Indian options like curries and also chicken and lamb. Many non-meat choices are available and taste very good. They also have a small salad bar through dessert. All of the staff are friendly and attentive--especially for more water if you need it. At the bar or waiting area (take-out) they have Taj Mahal beer in large bottles, similar to Blue Moon. If you order take out, but order it inside the restaurant, there is an actual 10 percent discount. Have been coming to this place for a few years, and have enjoyed each time.

Quirky, tasty, would go again

By James M |

Hard to rate Indian Cuisine restaurants sometimes as it is so dependent on what you order. Among other things, this place makes their own spicy mixed pickle which I found excellent. Rogon Josh was spot on, Tandori fish and chicken very good. The naan were plentiful and well textured. The saag aloo was under seasoned. I had read some comments about the service at this restaurant but my experience was the opposite. There were some older gentleman who were delightful and the service was convivial and prompt. Would go again to try some of the other breads and vindaloo.

Excellent

By cleo |

Our go to Indian when in town. The lamb chops are outstanding and the curry full of flavour and the best fluffy tandoor nan bread i have ever eaten.

Gaylord Chicken

By shilstar |

We went here not expecting too much but we were really surprised at the excellent use of herbs and spices to produce a great range of authentic curry dishes. I had the chicken Gaylord which was superb and also tried the lamb korai.

Good Indian food

By sandebeachkihei |

Loved the complimentary starters as well as the chicken tikka masala. Very comfortable warm atmosphere with great service.

Just OK

By Ketan2212 |

While the overall food is good, it lacks that traditional Indian taste. There is not a lot of variety and the service needs to improve a bit. Considering the price they charge, I'd expect slightly more across all areas!

Best Vegetarian Indian Food I've Ever Had

By Anne B |

I only got take-out from this restaurant so I can't comment on the atmosphere, etc. I was staying at a hotel very nearby to Gaylord's and read online about how outstanding the food was. I ordered the Gobhi Manchurian, batter-dipped cauliflower with a Manchurian sauce, and garlic naan. I consider myself to have eaten some fine Indian food in my life but this particular naan and entree were seriously among the best I've ever had. The Gobhi Manchurian was crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and the rice that came with it was fragrant and cooked to the right consistency. I wish I had access to this restaurant at home. If you find yourself in the vicinity of the Chicago Gaylord's, do yourself a favor and get this dish!

Good food poor service

By WulleRO |

Went there for lunch and chose the buffet. Food is good and tasty. Apparently Indian cuisine is not as popular in the U.S. as in the UK. The service however ruined the whole experience. Therefore it was quite inexpensive.

Wonderful Indian food

By edsatty |

Every time we are in town, this is our can't be missed go-to Indian food restaurant. Dishes are consistently great - vindaloo is especially good and so are the saag dishes. Also love the complimentary "starters" table at dinner of veggies and papadum chips with sauces. Service is attentive. Prices reasonable. Give it a try - you can't go wrong.

Good, reliable Indian food, just off Michigan Avenue

By Si G |

Gaylord is our go-to place for Indian food. The menu is extensive, and we seldom have had a dish we didn't like. Some of our favorites are the tandoori chicken or mixed grill, sag paneer, and chicken Gaylord (with a delicious sauce). The wine and beer list is ample. The service is professional and helpful. The ambiance is pleasant. If you are in the mood for Indian cuisine, you won't go wrong at Gaylord.

Favorite Indian restaurant in Chicago

By jltaylor0295 |

Love the food here, large restaurant with lots of seating. The food is amazing, my favorite is the lunch buffet which has all sorts of great Indian dishes to choose from. The menu has so much to choose from and it's so good. Service is always quick and friendly too.

Tasty Indian food!

By NJCricketer |

Most non veg dishes especially the chicken and lamb ones were great. The appetizers like samosas were good too - the seafood (shrimp) and the gujarati sev puris I would consider average. The papads were soggy and the restaurant has to create a better first impression First time here so I will know what to focus on - the north indian style chicken and lamb dishes and the lamb biryani.

Dinner

Great dinner, this from a indian foodie. The service was good. The prices are reasonable. The quality and quantity was good.

Indian food

By Jujsidhu |

Went there on a cold day, the food was not good, lentil donuts ( vada) were rock hard and the chicken gravy was bland and tasteless and Daal ( lentil) was watery and not at all tasty. Have been to many indian places near Chicago Downtown this was by far the least fav and without flavors.. Location is so good, but t food is not all tasty.

Had Sunday buffet lunch, perhaps not its best. Fare was limited and basic, with two chicken, one fish, three or four vegetarian dishes plus rice and Indian bread. Nothing wrong with the food, nothing great either. Ambience was not inspiring. Not a place I would travel to eat.

The best Indian food in Chicago!

By Eluzabeth D |

This was a 6 out of 5.. the best!! The owner was so friendly and nice and gracious… The food was amazing and the service was incredible. Such a nice ambience, warm paneled walls, beautiful paintings and subtle lighting. A great cozy atmosphere for outstanding Indian food. Our friends used to go there 20 years ago and the food and the atmosphere is still outstanding!

Very good

An Indian Food Freak, the food at Gaylord was fantastic. Great nan, good rice and all of our dishes were just superb - better than my favorite Indian restaurant at home. Service was good. Highly recommend.

Another wonderful meal

By CZY4JAO |

Gaylord is our "go to" restaurant every time in Chicago. The service and food is consistently first class. The wait staff was very attentive without being overbearing. Where else can you get a wonderful buffet lunch for under $15.00 that is 1/2 block off Michigan Avenue?

Where is the art of spice?

By Kim R |

I ordered delivery from Gaylord for a private supper. My guest had good past experiences with this restaurant. It was recommended. The hot chicken dish tasted about average. They did use the best chunks of white meat, but the heat in the sauce did not marry as well as others I have tried. The paneer dish with spinach and cheese was tasty. The texture and consistency was okay, but again, the heat or pepper was not masterful. They did give us an extra helping. I ordered Samosas and I got some lukewarm, greasy fried fritters covered in a thick, bland pancake batter. I threw half the order away. They were generous with dipping sauces and sides, but the entre dishes need to improve before I pay this kind of money. They would not survive in Queens, NY where I learned to love Indian spice cooking.

Good restaurant in the neighbourhood

By Salah_Sharaf |

If you are around in the neighbourhood then Gaylord is a good place to visit. The restaurant sign can be seen from the street . The restaurant itself is in a lower level from street level, with a big bar in front. So if you are passing by you might not notice the restaurant and think its a bar. The food served is Halal, and you get good roghan josh and samosa. If I am next in Chicago in the neighbourhood, will pass by again.

Excellent Indian

By Ber Zur Swiss |

If you like Indian food this is a must try in Chicago. The mirchi pakora, kababs, curried and nanns were all excellent. Perfectly heats up the cold weather. Service is topnotch too

Good Indian Food in Chicago

We had Dinner here no 15th June 2014. We Enjoyed the great food. The Restaurant has good quality and test of food. Would definitely recommend this Restaurant for Test & Quality.

Satisfying good

By BMDHOLAKIA |

It is centrally located having good Indian ambience. Menu is wide with varieties of dishes. Taste was very good. Good wines are also served. Service was quick and there was personal attendance from management.

Over rated

By Shree K |

The food is plentiful, and service was good. However, it felt that the flavors were lacking. We had the vindaloo (spicy), chicken tikka, gosht biryani, sheekh kababs (very good). 3 stars for food and service. However, I will give a 4 star as one of our members was celebrating a birthday and they served a very tasty Orange ice cream (burfi), which is served chilled on an orange peel. Nice touch.

SO Good So Close to the Westin

By iwearblack |

First meal in town and open on Xmas day, bless them. Staff is uber friendly, food is rich and good. I had an appetizer that about filled me up so I ordered an appetizer of lamb sausage and chicken tikka and a bowl of orange rice. Hubby had really good chicken Tikka and Garlic Naan. Both left fat and happy. We walked over one block from the Westin it's down below. Dress was casual and we spent about $50. I'd be a regular if I lived near by.

Nice restaurant for family groups

By QuietTourist |

We were in large family group and found the food, drinks and service to be excellent. We loved the naan, cauliflower appetizer, fish curry and several vegetarian dishes. Would highly recommend for large groups wanting to share a number of interesting dishes. Restaurant was nice and quiet but that may have been because we were there on a Tuesday night.

Worthwhile Experience

By Ziganki |

Admittedly, Indian restaurants aren't a personal favorite because curry isn't my favorite spice. The Gaylord provides enough variety and offerings to satisfy any customer. Our server was very attentive and the wine list provided some nice selections at a fair price. It was a very worthwhile evening.

good enough but not great.

By radharani9 |

great location but not worth the price for the experience. food not bad in taste but i came home with an upset stomach...some in our group felt it lacked freshness. Service could definitely be a bit better. place is a little dark and glum they could glam up the decor and cutlery. and send side salad with each entree.

Lunch was just so-so

By Paul M |

We have had take away food from Gaylord several times and we have always been very pleased with the food. I had the opportunity to have lunch there and the buffet was quite ordinary. The food choices were below par and the service was inattentive. Although the waiter approached us 3 or 4 times to get us to start our lunch we almost had to chase him down for our check!

Impressive

By Shree K |

I was referred by a local and was not disappointed. They have a self-serving stand which has papadams, different chutneys (green, tamarind, mango) and aachar (fresh veg pickle). We ordered the mixed grill, samosa, variety of naans (the lamb stuffed was awesome), dal, lamb vindaloo and lamb Kadai. Even the Biryani was wonderful. Kerala fish curry was really tasty. The team did not need breakfast the following morning :-). Worth a visit again if I am in the windy city.

Excellent

Couldn't find the restaurant we were looking for so we ducked in here. We were a bit out of our element as we had never had Indian food before. I don't why it took me so long. We had a wonderful meal. I can't wait to go back to try it agin.

A good buffet spread!!

By Krishnakumar M |

The occasion was my in-laws' wedding anniversary. The whole family is togther at Chicago on the day meant a good family lunch on the occasion. Indian food it had to be and Gaylord was the rendezvous. A decent spread of indian food and I was happy to see clients of various ethnicities enjoying the food. The shrimp curry & kheer was tasty. Chicken tandoori was good. However, they got the spinach all wrong. Overall, good food, nice ambience & great camraderie by the elderly gentleman with an apron.

Some of the best Indian food I have eaten

By Steve |

Didn't plan on eating at this place but just happened to be walking down the street and saw it and remembered the great recommendations. It did not disappoint. Honestly, not a whole lot of experience with Indian food but I'd rank this place up with the best. It was a lunch buffet so I could pick and choose but there was so many great things I gorged myself sampling almost all the dishes. Very glad we stopped here to experience it.

A warm welcome!

By Deanna P |

I last visited Gaylords in March of 2015 and when I came in the door (Dec 2015) the owner was standing there and greeted me with a big smile and a "Welcome back!!" It's this close attention that he pays to his customers that make them feel so welcomed and you can't miss that, that close attention is also given to the recipes!

Awful food; poor management

By Trinity20033 |

I've been to this restaurant a couple of times and each time vowed never to return. It's not the service that is terrible - it is the management that is unresponsive, apathetic, and rude to any feedback. I ordered samosas as appetizers (approximate $6) and they were soggy. However, even for this trivial amount the management did not make any hospitable efforts.

Lacking

By Eco_12 |

Waiters argued in front of customers. Flavors unbalanced in main dishes, I am fairly sure chicken was reheated in some of the dishes!! Naan bread was the only good element of the dinner. We wanted to love it but ..sorry this place was very disappointing.

Delicious Indian food

By Preethi-Kr |

The decor and ambience reminded me of North Indian family restaurants of 90s. We went for dinner. Good Indian vegetarian food choices, in chats, starters, mains and desserts. Ordered Samosa chat, mirch pakoda, veg koftas, rotis, veg biryani and lassi from the a la carte menu. Waiting time was much lesser compared to restaurants in India. Both food and hospitality were amazing. The staffs are a bit old, however, very polite. I would definitely recommend the restaurant for a taste of north Indian cuisine in Chicago.

Great dining place

By Krishna1946 |

Typical Indian atmosphere with host of Indian film actor pictures and other places of tourist attractions in India. Indian music, the typical food stuff of Indian delicacies are special temptations here.
