Historic, and satisfying.

By Foodsthegame |

To me if you visit Chicago you have to get a couple of meals steak is one, and this to me is the original and quintessential Chicago Steak house and there are so many to choose from. Anyway, we made reservations on open table. We arrived and were led immediately to ours. The waiter who was grade A, top notch, made an excellent wine suggestion, and got us our drinks right away. We opted to share every thing, so we split a baby gem salad which was unique and very pleasing. Then I got their version of creamed spinach, which was a little rich maybe and just ok. Then we ordered the Tomahawk ribeye which comes with an amazing presentation already sliced up. Ok here is where it gets tough, this was a $100 plus steak ( yes we splurged) the waiter suggested and my wife wanted medium rare, but it came ultimately medium to even medium well. Good steak just not great because it was a little over cooked. I will say my wife was ecstatic so, as long as she was happy i'm happy but I think reasonable people can agree, if you pay top dollar for a steak then perfection is the order of the day. I did love the atmosphere but ultimately when I return to Chicago I'll give another place a chance.

Everything perfect

By Colleen S |

Everything was perfect. Antonio our server was attentive but not interrupting… the food was excellent and the portions were huge. We had the ravioli and gnocchi… it was like a quaint restaurant with a big city feel. We were not rushed which is a huge plus We will definitely be back.

Amazing staff!

By L_Lott19 |

This was our first time in Chicago and we were there to celebrate my husband's birthday. This is where we had our last dinner of the weekend and it was wonderful. From the moment we walked in, we felt at home. The staff was exceptional and went out of their way to make sure we had a great evening. They were all attentive and so friendly. The food was great! My husband enjoyed the steak and I my pasta. Really enjoyed the overall experience.

Worthy coming back

By LuisaneV |

Because of such good memories of a previous trip, came back today. Our steaks, pasta and canoli sete excelent. Still a hidden geme only locals seem to know about, very old school. O would just not recommend the beers. In Chicago, they could do better. Give it a try!

A timeless Chicago classic

By Jose C |

This restaurant feels like it was taken straight out of an old movie. It’s like Disney for diners who love good taste, elegance, glamour, and a touch of history. It’s hard to describe a place like this — you simply can’t come to Chicago without visiting this iconic spot. Highly recommended! Jordy was especially attentive and guided us perfectly based on our preferences when ordering.

Still at its peak

By travelleronepg |

Excellent in every way The service, the wine and most importantly the food The special truffle pasta was outstanding, which was our third course. The steak and veal chop was excellent.

Best Italian family restaurant in Chicago

By Andres M |

Attention to details, food quality, presentation, and excellent cooks! There were four of us, we all ordered different dishes, and all of us agreed that that was the best of each dish we had ever tried. Everyone in the staff was very friendly and very professional.

Second time around

By Tampauro |

We ate here on vacation about 4 years ago and it was great. We rarely go to the same place twice because there are so many great places that we want to try. We made an exception to go here again because we loved it so much. It did not disappoint. We loved the atmosphere, the staff, the menu, the drinks. It was perfect again. This time we had a ribeye, spaghetti, cheese ravioli, fried calamari, cesar salad with chicken. I think this is our Chicago tradition. Great carrot cake

I've been coming here since the mid-60's!

By J David |

I only wished that I still lived in Chicago so I could visit here more often. The food never disappoints. Neither does the ambiance or service.

The breakfast

By travlinf0rw0rk |

We actually had breakfast very and it was fantastic. Omelets. Sat outside.. no pressure. Not rushed . Sunday morning. Decided to stop back for dinner next time we are in Chicago

Old School Eats

By Normal_DJO |

Are there better steak houses in Chicago? Yep. Are there better Italian restaurants? Yep again. This place, however, has been doing both very well for a long time. Personally I think they do Italian better than steak, but the steak is solid. The ambiance teeters between Chicago Mob hangout and weathered corner tavern. Some will like the vibe, some will not. On all of our visits, the service has been solid to outstanding. Good place for tourists to experience a long time Chicago favorite as well as a good choice for us in the suburbs when we’re wanting a City dinner.

"You Can Go Home Again"

By wino04538 |

There was a time when a bunch of us ate lunch two or three times a week at Gene & Georgetti's. so much so that we almost had a standing table up front by the bar.....well that was 25 to 30 years ago and I was anxious to go back on a recent weekend downtown stay to recapture the magic.......I had visions of the Garbage Salad floating before my eyes....drool was running down my chin....a fresh bread tray with sesame bread sticks and crusty bread, a couple of bottles of Santa Margherita, pinot grigio....be still my heart.......No fear JIM...the place is exactly as I remember it....it hasn't changed a lick and that is a good thing....a scene right out of the Godfather movies. Truth be told the Garbage Salad was a little on the vinegary side but who cares I could eat it every day for lunch. So folks you can go home again......run, don't walk their way for lunch when you are downtown

Old World Quality

By Alex C |

We had a group dinner at G&G for a family member's birthday some time ago. We are locals and are aware of how stiff the steakhouse competition and general high-end dining scene is in Chicago. G&G sticks out from the rest because it is a local business with a long, established history that combines top notch steaks with Italian classics in an old-world setting. The restaurant itself is situated in one of the oldest buildings in the city, and is a relic from the neighborhood's former era when Italian immigrants lived nearby in significant numbers. We had a couple of steaks, a fish, and a couple of pasta entrees. The steaks were clearly high quality and cooked to desired temperature. Our server's recommendation on the limone preparation of the sea bass was very well-received. We also enjoyed the calamari and brussels sprouts. Service was friendly without any issues. Prices are high but you get what you pay for: quality We will definitely return to and highly recommend G&G for anyone looking for high quality food in a classic setting.

Old world Italian

By Sharon Slickis |

Step back in time to this incredible old world Italian restaurant where the walls just say you are in the right place! The aroma and old world sauce and homemade food just is beyond anything you have ever had! The waiters in vest and tie wait on your every wish. The bacon appetiser is an absolute must thick cut bite size everyone shared and we all negotiated the last piece it was that incredible! I ordered the chicken parm omgoodness just writing about it makes me want to go right back to Chicago! A Chicago landmark! A MUST!

Great Food & Service!

By SandyBeachesAhoy |

My first time at this establishment and the service/food were phenomenal. The only reason for the 4 out of 5 was I felt the interior was a little dated and it felt stagnant. Stopped for an adult beverage at the bar on the way out and that was a much more vibrant atmosphere. I would definitely go back, just saying it felt “off” sitting in the dining room area where we were seated. Old school cool!

a bit disappointed

By PDXmilespoints |

everything was good was a bit disappointed. It was supposed to have a super old school traditional steakhouse feel. I thought it kinda sorta had that but not tpo the level I expected or wanted. The steaks were really good- really really good Not amazing but again just a bit underwhelmed. Great service.

A great experience with food to try

By FrancoVivladi |

Really a great unexpected experience. I was there in the company of some colleagues after it was suggested and I can only thank those who gave us this suggestion. A traditional setting that makes you take a little leap into the recent past with class and charm and a food worth a visit. Amazing meat, but the real mention I want to make to chef Silvia who, arrived at our table treated us like old friends and involved us with her personality and with all the transport for the work she chose to do years ago for passion, that passion that is reflected in food. Thank you.

Old school standby still goid

By Lynda G |

Crowded as always but the bustle is expected and fun. Cozy decor. Food was somewhat disappointing this time though. Soupy creamed spinach, flavorless filet, overdressed Caesar salad, but a nice burrata salad. Good wine list and a very good cosmopolitans (ask for Cointreau). Valet parking is nice. Great service!

Excellently prepared steak and sides

By Toothsc |

We wanted steak and within walking distance of our hotel -- this fit the bill. Quaint old steakhouse from the '40s. Great staff and friendly chef -- they seem to have a lot of regulars. We both had the filets -- my wife opted for the 8 ounces while I had the 12 ounces size. Both expertly prepared and cooked just right. We split a grilled asparagus which was also cooked just right. We were disappointed that they did not serve any bread -- apparently the used to. We would return to this traditional steakhouse.

Sounds cliche' but...

By will72543 |

This is the Best Steakhouse in Chicago...the steakhouse mecca. The staff and ambience are perfect! The menu has some delightful surprises and the steaks are top notch. Definitely going back this fall.

Landmark Chicago Steakhouse

By Dealmaker |

I have always wanted to dine at Gene & Georgetti's, but never seemed to be able to fit in to my schedule while visiitng the Chicago area. This visit I made it a must to have dinner at this famous steakhouse. I have been on a nationwide test of ordering a strip steak charred and rare plus. Only 20% of the stekhouses I have dined at this year have cooked the steak the way I wanted it. Gene & Georgetti's strip steak came out perfect and very well seasoned. My guest had the veal parmigiana which was excellent as it was a puunded veal with the bone. The swervice was terrific. The atmosphere was "Old Chicag". Yes, I will return.

Excellent service and food

By loozianafoodie |

Very unassuming exterior corner building under the railroad tracks but once inside it's a bustling fabulous restaurant.- our waiter was super professional with excellent recommendations. We were able to walk in close to 9p on a Friday night with no reservation. Chicken scallopini special was a generous portion and was superb as was the petit filet cooked perfectly. Lemon cream cake dessert was also wonderful - light and delicious. Nice selection of specialty cocktails. Spent $175 for 2 including tip but it was worth it.

A slice of Old Chicago

By rip2632 |

Our party of 3 enjoyed all our various dishes, which sampled the delicious steak selections available. Service was efficient, atmosphere was festive (if a bit crowded -- but, hey, it's a popular place). Prices on the high "special occasion" side but fair for what you receive.

Very good restaurant

By Brigitte B |

Perfect for spending a pleasant evening after an intense day in Chicago. Excellent dishes. Perfect meat. But be careful, the quantity on the plates is enormous. Plan to share.

Excellent In Every Way!

By Carol Edwards |

The old wooden building had so much character. Be sure to read the history on it. Our waiter, Tony, had been working there over 20 years, and was the best. Our appetizer was the best grilled calamari we’ve ever had. My filet mignon was excellent, as was my husband’s ricotta and spinach ravioli with bolognese sauce. Tony suggested nice wines for each of us. For dessert, I had the lemon sorbet and coffee, and my husband had the spumoni. Both were great. On our first trip to Chicago, this was the food highlight! We think we’ll have to come back to Chicago soon, just to have dinner here again!

Old School Average

By passportsallineed |

We were expecting something a bit more upscale and were surprised when most of the patrons were wearing sweatshirts and casual clothes—not what you would expect from a steakhouse. We called ahead and asked if we could bring another couple and were told they were full up, only room for the two of us. When we showed up they gave us a table for 4 and the restaurant was not anywhere near full. Disappointing that they could not accommodate us. The food was average. I had the Chicken Joe which was quite tasty but weirdly a dish to serve four people. I’m not kidding—four full chicken breasts. The side of brussels sprouts were basically boiled with some bacon tossed in and no seasoning. Not good at all. My husband had the filet which was good. They serve mostly Italian wines so if you’re not into Italian wine plan on drinking something else. Service was friendly but took forever. Our reservation was at 7 and our appetizer came at 8pm and the main at 8:30. Lots of waiting. Overall, just an average place, the kind of place you go to if you’re a local and not celebrating anything special.

Chicago's Oldest Steakhouse

By Fjorz |

There are lots of steakhouses in Chicago and I have been fortunate enough to eat at many of them, but there is something special about this one. This is a taste of old Chicago and times long gone. The interior of the building is dark and has the feeling of times less stressful. The staff here are seasoned workers that know how to be of service to the diners. Steaks here are as good as they get. My steak is ALWAYS cooked perfectly. Your steak comes with a platter full of fried potatoes that are addictive. You just can't stop eating them. But before you get to your steak, try the fried ravioli appetizer. This is incredible. The portion is 5 large ravioli served with a meat sauce. Everything about the ravioli is incredible. Highly recommended. Fresh crispy bread is brought to your table and a salad is also part of the meal. Reservations are necessary and valet parking is available. If you are in Chicago, don't pass up the opportunity to dine here.

Mediocre steak

By Trinh V |

Stumbled upon Gene & Georgetti one night and decided to give it a try. My friend and I decided to sit at the bar to wait for a table. The wait took about 30 min so we decided to order food at the bar. The service at the bar was 1/5. They were inattentive and neglectful. It was such a disappointment from the upstairs dining and service. The servers were marvelous! Came by every 2-3 min and even escorted us to our table. Food: -Salad (4/5): Pretty Delicious! -Filet Mignon (Medium) (3.5/5): Not bad! Juicy and pink on the inside like I like it. Mm delicious! -Stuffed Mushrooms (3.5/5): A bit too much cheese for my liking. -Sausage: I didn’t try this because I usually don’t eat pork but my friend said it was dry.

Come for the Steak, Stay for the Steak

By AvWriter |

We are continuing our trek through Chicago steakhouses, one at a time. This time, my wife selected Gene and Georgetti's, which was a bit of a walk from our hotel. Tip: Make sure you have a reservation. We walked in at our exact reservation time, and were seated in moments. Others who didn't have a reservation took more time to be seated. Tip: Don't be discouraged if the bar area is full - there is an upstairs with plenty more room. We were seated, and served a nice, hot loaf of fresh bread. I mean a loaf - it was at least a foot long, by around 6 inch diameter, nice and hot. The butter melted like that. Very tasty! Then it was time to order. We both ordered steaks - my wife had the 7 ounce filet, and I had the 11 ounce (or smaller?) filet. Both were ordered and served medium rare, with a Bearnaise sauce. They also came with cottage fries. We ordered a side of sauteed spinach. The cottage fries were overdone. I'm not going to mince words here - some of them were so over-done that they broke into fragments when I tried to pick them up with my fork. Others defied the fork altogether. The sauteed spinach was fairly good, but drier than I was expecting. The steaks were the reason for the trip. I started cutting mine in smaller and smaller pieces, to extend the meal. Very good, charcoal broiled, tasty and tender. The wine list goes from the good to the exotic. Prices are about what you would expect, with a bottle of Jordan (street, around $40 to $80) selling for $130. We went with a Robert Mondavi Cab for $65 for the bottle. Service was very good. At times the noise levels were high, and we had a hard time understanding our server. Be patient, and try again. Good place. Wish they had better options that cottage fries, but hey, it's their signature.

Best Steak in Chicago!

By Vigriffith |

This was by far the best steak we had in Chicago, and we visited several other famous steakhouses. We enjoyed a ribeye and we also ordered a pasta dish, Casoncelli, which did not disappoint. The only complaint I have is, our waiter recommended the ribeye to us because it was supposedly his favorite. Later on, we heard him recommend two different steaks that were his favorite to two different tables. We felt like he was just making recommendations to make them not because they were truly his favorites. Aside from that, his service was great, and we certainly enjoyed our meal! We will return.

Old school, great food and feel.

By Andrew A |

In the great city of Chicago with my son for the Giants/Bears game. Went here on a former native’s recommendation and were not disappointed. When you spend this kind of money you expect the best. We were warmly greeted, shown to a nice table and met our friendly server. Cocktails, Tomahawk for two with potatoes and asparagus. Excellent, one of the best steaks I’ve had recently. I’ve read reviews criticizing the old school ambiance but that was appealing to us. If I want an overpriced, expense account steakhouse with a corporate feel I know where to go. Not cheap but we felt it was easily worth it. Go Giants.

Excellent steak and pasta

By Samantha D |

Delicious melt in your mouth filet plus a delicious pasta dish made for a special date night. Atmosphere is nice, and the service is fabulous. Highly recommend! Is a bit expensive but worth it!

Health Food at its best!

By Skigirl822 |

I have had many different dining experiences at G&G for over 20 years. Dinner with my family, large group parties, out of town guests looking for a Chicago classic steakhouse, a lite lunch with friends alfesco style, coffee at the walk-up window, Thanksgiving dinner takeout, Pantry dinner's to go, client events, you name it is always excellent and just the perfect meal to enjoy. However, recently I had one of the most special experiences, which I think speaks volumes to the excellence and care of G&G. My husband was hospitalized at Northwestern for a long recovery and while I don't want to knock hospital food, it was just simply not getting his appetite and strength up. So I called up G&G for a Take Out order of Chicken Limone, Caesar Salad, Mashed Potatoes, Asparagus and of course Tiramisu. It was remarkable to see how his mood and overall wellness changed from that one meal! We fully give credit the kick start to his healthy recovery to G&G. The quality of the food speaks volumes as to why it should be on anyones health and wellness food list!

A great evening

By John S |

Our family had dinner Saturday night and just a wonderful evening service food cocktails wine was wonderful. Our server Alex was helpful, friendly, and professional. Sergio the Manager was also fantastic. This place has not let the Covid restrictions effect the experience as other restaurants have cut back on service and quality.Gene & Georgetti’s is still first class and old world service and quality. We will be back soon.

Mama Mia that’s a great steak!

By Ericraheem |

Had a perfectly prepared strip steak with some great sides. Nice house salad and home fries cones with the entree. Comfortable traditional atmosphere. Convenient to everywhere. Totally recommended.

Old style but a bit old achool

By bclarke292 |

We were looking forward to this place ... very typical old style Italian family restaurant. Very good food but traditional.. large portions, lots of options. It was really good but not over the top.

Classic Steak House

By Jodphd |

Four of us came here after Cubs game on Friday. When you walk in the door it gives you the feeling of an old time restaurant. We sat at the bar ordered a drink. Service was acceptable, but no one seemed to smile. Maybe they are not supposed to. We were seated, drinks were ordered and we were give the menu. The obvious major items on the menu were steaks. I ordered a bone in rib-eye, my favorite. Salad or soup was included along with potatoes, unusual in today's' venue of steak houses. We could order other sides and we did, asparagus and broccoli. We had carrot cake for desert that we split among the four of us. I had a double espresso my favorite after-dinner coffee. My rib-eye was cooked to my liking, sides were outstanding. Service was very good, but with a smile it could have been better. The atmosphere was very classic. I felt a little cramped in the dining area. Overall I enjoyed the experience and would go back. And it is much better than its sister restaurant in Rosemont.

Great dinner

By 35cookie35 |

Atmosphere and dining were fantastic! I ordered a chicken dinner instead of the traditional Steak, was a fabulous choice great peppers and montage of flavour.

Great Meal and Service

By FloridaTraveler |

We recently dined here with our family and had a wonderful experience. The service and ambiance were flawless, and the food was exceptional. Having dined at many fine establishments, I can confidently say this one meets the highest standards. I highly recommend it. We had a fantastic time and I would definitely come back if I’m in Chicago again.

One of Chicago's finest restaurants!!!

By Diane K |

FRIDAY FOOD REVIEW...GENE AND GEORGETTI...6/13/25! For dinner tonight, we went to Gene and Georgetti, located at 500 N. Franklin St., in Chicago, IL. Scott and I split their La Bistecca Florentina, a Prime, Dry Aged T-Bone, which is served with grilled asparagus. This steak was perfectly cooked, and perfectly seasoned...the flavor of the outer edges was EXCELLENT!!! This is exactly how you would expect a steak to be and taste!!! The asparagus was also cooked to perfection!!! The servers were always close at hand in case you needed anything, which makes the meal even more enjoyable!!! We never had to ask for a refill, plus they cleaned off the table constantly, which is a HUGE plus in my book!! This restaurant exudes class all the way around, and is one that I VERY HIGHLY recommend!!!!! My rating: 10++++

"Never goes out of style"

By Taylor B |

Gene & Georgetti's has been in business since 1941 so you know they must be doing something right. Located at 500 North Franklin Street in Chicago's River North neighborhood. It is an old-school Chicago steakhouse that serves prime meat, seafood and Italian specialities in a traditional setting. In fact, Gene & Georgetti's is the oldest steakhouse in a town noted for its steakhouses. A favorite gathering place for businessmen at lunchtime and celebrities in the evening. For appetizers, my wife and I chose shrimp cocktail, minestrone, Italian sausage with peppers and Caesar salad with chicken. For entrees, my wife opted for veal scaloppine with garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach while I, adhering to my more fish/less meat diet, passed up spaghetti and meatballs with meat sauce and the 12-ounce roast prime rib of beef in favor of broiled whitefish with broccoli and a double baked potato. There are so many outstanding steakhouses in Chicago--and all of them opened long after Gene & Georgetti's--but the Grand Old Lady on Franklin Street, celebrating her 78th year, never goes out of style.

Awesome dining experience at one of the “institutions” in Chicago. My son has quite a few life threatening food allergies and his allergies were handled extremely well!! Our server was extremely knowledgeable and attentive. Also, my son said his filet was one of the best he’s ever had!!

Authentic Italian

By John W |

I am not italian but felt like i had a great meal here last night. From the moment you walk in, you sense the home feel to it. Clearly a lot of people are regulars and are known by name. For dinner, we shared a garbage salad, rib-eye steak and lasagna. Honestly i wanted the prime rib, but they were sold our for the night. the garbage salad was an interesting traditional salad combined with anti-pasta salad. Very good. The rib-eye was cooked perfect. The lasagna was very good as well. It was a sweeter sauce, but huge portion. We ate the steak, but only ate hafl of the lasagna since it was such a huge portion. I finished with banana cake (odd choice for me but it was great). The service was there, but not hovering over us all night. Just a good balance. Over all the place was busy, but felt like a comfortable family environment. Would i go back again? Yes.

Good food and fast service

By Sleeper22 |

Made reservations, not sure if we needed to be better to be safe. Decor is Italian-ish. We walked through a bar area to a back room for dinner w about 10 tables. Carlis was our waiter. Excellent service. Talked us into dessert after a huge meal. Delicious cheeecake. I had 8 oz filet and hubby had lamb shank. Both were very tender and tasty. Can’t go wrong. Had to have a Bruce Wayne Pinot because being located under the EL it felt like Gotham. Kubda cool. Will come again.

Wonderful Experience

By Mary Megan Wolfe |

Excellent!! Have been here once before. Service was wonderful and food is exceptional. Highly recommend coming here!

Nothing Special

By Kuvasz1988 |

Much hype here and not much to back it up. I ordered a filet medium well and it came back medium rare. I asked to have it cooked a bit more and it came back charred A disappointment for a place with this reputation.

Steak and Pasta

By TravelChic4469 |

The flank steak was simply excellent - what a flavor! The spaghetti and meatballs were perfection. More than we expected and not disappointed.

Fantastic Steak

By Donna R |

Absolutely one of the best steak houses I have ever eaten in. The old school Chicago atmosphere and the service is outstanding. This is a hidden gem and you should do yourself a favor and make sure you find it the next time you are in Chicago!!!

A Must!

By Susan |

A welcoming, unique, delicious experience. The steaks are great as are the Italian classics. Try the garbage salad and be sure to get a bread basket. You can go to a chain steakhouse in any city but for an old world wonderful meal, this is the place.

Living On Its Reputation

By W R |

Gene & Georgetti is an old steakhouse in downtown Chicago that I think might be getting by on its reputation. My house salad was nice, but heavy on the dressing. (I should have requested it on the side.) My filet was a nice medium rare (which I requested) on the inside, but it was charred on the outside. The strip steak that my wife ordered was not cooked how she requested, but they took it back and corrected the problem. The complimentary cottage fries were nothing to brag about. Our service was excellent and the ambiance was just OK. I have to admit, it was crowded compared to some other restaurants in the area, but I am confident that there are better steakhouses in Chicago.

Worth the trip

By Mary B |

We go to Chicsgo 3 or 4 times a year. One of the main adventures there is restaurants. Gene and Georgettis had been on our list for a long time and we finally made it. It was great. Th2 steaks were the best. My husband got the prime rib special they have on Friday and Saturday night. It was huge and so, so good. I can see why this restaurant has been in Chicago since 1941.

Classic American Steakhouse

By FiveDivers |

Though we are not from Chicago, we've been coming to Gene & Georgetti for decades every time we get to Chi Town. Old Italian restaurant that turned is also a classic American steakhouse. Some of the best steaks ever. We always start with the grilled Calamari which is the best there is. Main entree was the Tuscan inspired Bisteca alla Florentina...WOW, just WOW. Maybe the best steak I have ever had. Enough for 2, maybe 3 people. Incredible service.

Delicious but our waiter....meh

By mewaxwiz |

My sweetheart had been to Chicago before but didn't get to go here for dinner, so this was a MUST. Beautiful night, but we opted for indoor seating. We enjoyed the Carpaccio & Caprese to begin, followed by Steaks - I enjoyed the rib-eye and he, the porterhouse. Both looked a little thin, however.....they were cooked perfect! Med Rare. Absolutely perfect! A great sear on the outside, followed by the perfect dark pink everywhere else. Not one where just the middle meat was pink - but the entire steak. Yumm......Dessert, of course - delicious! Downfall and the only reason they don't get 5* is our waiter. He wasn't rude, however he was not friendly either. I would call him a lifer that is burnt out. Didn't engage....didn't try to engage and my sweetheart asked me to stop trying. Luckily, the food is so amazing, it made up for his lack of personality.

Terrible 2nd visit

By Karen H |

Poor service, poor quality, poor service. Last year, our experience was amazing. I had tordelli and it was not fresh. Bolognese sauce was bland. Filet mignon was dry and no flavor. Gnocchi was not fresh and no flavor. The price was over $600. Something has changed in the running of the restaurant. Seasoned wait staff we had last year that had worked in the restaurant for decades were gone. The place was packed.

Legendary for a Reason

By Darin W |

Great (pair) of evenings at Georgia and Georgetti's. Thanks to their floor manager Angelo Yohanna, we had two extraordinary evenings with our European customers. "No" simply wasn't in their vocabulary. We asked for expanded seating on at least 4 occasions the first night (more colleagues wanted to join once they heard how good the food was). Angelo's team made it happen over and over, and despite the kitchen closing the chefs at G&G cooked up delicious steaks and vegetarian dishes both. Food and service was so good we came back again (at our client's request) despite all the choices Chicago has to offer. Can't go wrong with this legendary address - legendary for a reason, it provides memorable evenings. Not to be missed!

Historic Gem

By careerman17 |

This place had all the character you would expect from an old school Italian steakhouse. The filet and potatoes were solid. The highlight for me was the Italian salad dressing! I'll be back.

Long time favorite

By Scenic784496 |

I always try to sit in the bar area for the feel of a real old time, intimate experience. Food is still terrific after all these years and service is excellent. Went recently on a nostalgia visit to my old hometown and stopped as a must visit!

Anniversary Dinner

By IllinoisRiverRat |

This place was recommended by a friend, and it was very good. He told me that anybody and everybody had eaten there over the years. We had great steaks (bone on ribeye) and the service is top notch. It's a really old style type restaurant and I'd recommend it for a romantic dinner

Garbage

By Ze |

What a complete let down . I will say I went on Thanksgiving so maybe they gave their " A team " the day off, but why be open if you arent going to do it right. The cut of steak used for the tomahawk was a beautiful piece of meat, sad gthere was no cheff to do it justice. Meat was not seasoned and completely charred on the outside. I ordered it medium and the fat was still solid white on the inside, center was raw outside was burnt charcoal. Mashed sweet potatoes, again completely unseasoned, simply taken from the skin mashed and thats it, no butter no salt no pepper just watery sweet potato. Perhaps the most offensive other than ruining a great cut of meat was the crab cake. A fairly decent crab cake served on to of a sea of what seemed like kraft creamy italian dressing. and a few slices of cherry tomato. Fire the entire kitchen staff !!!

Sinatra was on to something....Great experience, phenomenal food.

By Carlos GC |

I loved it. Super old school, excellent food, options for everyone, and impeccable service. I highly recommend a visit!

Delicious food and good service in a Chicago institution

By Mme_X |

Quick summary: Delicious Italian-influenced food. A la carte pricing. "Old-line" ambiance, i.e. smart casual dress, although you'll also be fine in something nicer. Friendly, professional service. Definitely share some dishes, especially the meat-based mains. We were in town for a few days, and my husband had never been to this Chicago institution. Fair warning: portions are generally large and shareable, with guidance below. The starters (calamari, antipasto, crab cakes, beef tartare...) are mostly in the $20's. Salads are mostly in the $teens, and probably the one course I recommend each getting your own serving. We split the Caesar salad ($15) and it was a bit skimpy for two. Soups are $8. A nice range of pastas are in the $20's, but as we were going to get sides with our meat course, we skipped this course. Sides are priced in the $teens range. The beef/lamb dishes will mostly be in the $60 - $100 range, and often shareable. 8 oz filet mignon is $60, 12 ounce filet mignon is $70, 14-oz NY strip steak is $70...and there are larger steaks in the 20-24 oz range. G & G classics - mostly chicken and fish - are priced in the $30's. I raved about the lamb chops from my last visit with colleagues, so I knew we were going to get three thick-cut, ample portions - I had one, and my husband had the other two ($88.) We added the delish Vesuvio roasted potatoes (enough for 3-4, IMHO.) There are other nice sides veges such as asparagus, brussels sprouts, the classic creamed spinach, side of pasta...) I'm glad we left room for dessert. The spumoni ($9) is a large, shareable brick with coconut as the "white" part, pistachio, and the most delicious strawberry layer I've ever had (and I order spumoni whenever I see it on a menu.) Coffee for me ($6) and a glass of Amaro for my husband ($13.) Full bar, and deep into a very good wine list. 'No problem finding very good brunellos. Friendly, helpful, attentive, professional service. The staff do a good tag-team, but you will be in especially good hands if Fernando is your point man. The ambiance is more casual here than many upmarket steakhouses, befitting the old-line history of the place. It reminds me of the Italian neighborhoods of my East Coast upbringing. I saw some families when we were there (lucky kids!!) all well-behaved. "Smart casual" is the byword, but it never hurts to dress up a bit. The noise level on the night we were there was acceptable for conversation. So - this was truly a delightful meal. The price point does not make it a place just to drop into every day, but you get well-crafted food at good value.

Anniversary dinner

By Doug K |

We were in town to celebrate our anniversary. So we decided on Gene & Georgetti’s for some surf and turf. Our filets and lobster tails were very good, cooked perfectly and served quickly. Service was great. Portions large. And the lemon cream cake was a great way finish off a good dinner.

An iconic Do Not Miss

By Suzanne F |

We are empty nester, professionals, foodies in Chicago for a getaway weekend. Ate here on a Thursday night 7:30. We walked from our VRBO, but I would Uber if we were farther away. Restaurant was full, but we were sat at the time of our reservation, which we got easily that afternoon. Think: The Godfather. Most patrons in suits/dresses, a few in jeans and dress shirts. Service was swift, our server assistant was SUPER attentive. Our server definitely had favorite patrons, but was cordial, informative, and Italian. The salads were large, chopped romaine lettuce with delicious blue cheese or Italian dressing. I had a lovely super tuscan and the best Italian sausage and peppers I've had. Wish I had gotten the appetizer portion as I had to take 1/2 of it "home". My husband got whitefish special with marinara and shrimp and "cottage potatoes", which are sliced baked potatoes. Don't miss the best tiramisu and cappuccino. The table next to us all got a la carte steaks and sides, which looked divine and most could only eat 1/2. Consider sharing entrees as they are huge.

The real deal in Chicago!

By jworkman67 |

My wife and I ate here on a recomendation from a Las Vegas Legend and we are glad we did. The food and service were outstanding.

Classic old school restaurant!

By rpm186nlr |

We chose this place after Googling "best lamb chops in Chicago" and we were not disappointed! I had the lamb chops and my wife had the veal parmesan - both were excellent! The ambiance is wonderful. Our waiter Jose was pleasant and engaging - we found out he has been working there for 33 years! We would recommend this place highly- very pleasant dining experience.

Too steak-hanovism!

By Yobi Nounet |

It is not only for the play on words, quite involuntary by the way. Initially a typo. We immediately thought to Sardi's of New York, the restaurant of all the stars of Broadway. Don't imagine spending hours there - jet lag effects, that can often help us. But right now, it's far too fast. It's good without being exceptional. You really don't feel like you made good use of the $200 you spent together. Dinner is wiped in 60-75 minutes max. For 200 € a Tbone steak for 2, cocktails, desserts. It's chain work. In the end, we don't realize it too much, but we feel it as a frustration close to the tourist trap, completely agreed on both sides once on the spot.

great steak house

By Rich B |

Was in Chicago for business and called a friend to ask for a steak house. I was told to stop at Gene & Georgette's . He was correct the food was delicious the steak was perfect the extra was amazing . This is a very old steak house the place was crowded for a Wednesday from the locals ,that is tell you is is very good . So Next time stop in for a good old Steak .

Great service, food as expected

By Batdog62 |

Sadly I was not overly impressed with this restaurant. The service was good, however, I felt the Steak was average for a steak house, however overpriced. Ordered the bacon side which compared to other steak houses which offer similar fare was very disappointing.

Just awful

By divenuts |

It’s hard to believe there can be a worse steak house in Chicago, or even Illinois. Had a terrible meal here 4-5 years ago but had to attend a business dinner here this week and it was as bad as I remember. Awful food, ugly restaurant, sad clientele and indifferent service. How anyone can enjoy this place is beyond comprehension.

Thank you, Jordy! Fabulous Service & Food!

By JP* |

Thank you Jordy for amazing service, friendly personality, attentiveness and being a part of such a fun night for the 4 of us. Delicious beef fillet, nice crust!!Enjoyed the crab cake and burrata cheese on a bed of prosciutto for appetizers. Homemade pasta with bolognese sauce very nice!

Best filet ever and great atomosphere!

By C2CTrader |

Had the privilege of going here and it was spectacular. The onion rings are a must. Even though it is Italian they have the best filet I have ever had.

The very best there is in Italian eating if you have room after the bread and salad. Plan on needing a box or two. The dessert menu leaves nothing to be desired

Burnt Offering

By KingwoodBob |

Looking back, this was a bad experience. When I made the Open Table reservation I asked for a good waiter, hoping for the kind of guy that makes you his buddy, knows the ropes and looks out for you. That is not what we got. Our waiter was competent and diligent but seemed to operate dutifully and mechanically. It started off well: hard crust sour dough bread and fried onion ring appetizer, excellent; minestrone soup, very good. The meal progressed at a proper pace with nothing rushed. The waiter and assistants were diligent and very attentive. I was beginning to think it was going to be a good evening. My wife and I had ordered their T-bone steak for two, an $80 offering, cooked medium rare. When it showed it was very thick and had been seared so badly it was burned. A little char can be a good thing, but this was burn with its harsh, acrid taste. They perhaps should have cooked a steak that thick in two stages, but who am I to lecture the pros? Aside from that and the reason this rating is so low is that the meat had very little flavor. It seemed to be a cheap commercial grade, not even restaurant quality. There was no point in complaining, nothing could be done about it except buying a cow and starting over. We ordered some wine along with horseradish to help choke down some of the meat. The meal was accompanied by cream spinach which was OK to me but my wife thought it was bad. The vaunted cottage fries were also bad. Their boasted beef fat flavoring was not there; the fries were dry, tasteless and mostly overcooked. Our waiter saw we were unhappy and more or less disappeared. I don't believe any of those five star ratings and only a few of the four stars for this place. With some other offerings, our rating could be higher, but since we came there for the steak I can only give it two. This experience has killed my interest in high end steak houses. If you can't get good meat at a high end place like Gene and Georgetti's, where can you get it?

Perfect for the holiday season!

By Collette Block |

I have been going to Gene & Georgetti's with my family each holiday season for years. The atmosphere is perfect for red wine and steak with large, quite tables and non-abrasive staff. You must get a side of bearnaise sauce and at least two types of potatoes for the table. Holds such a dear place in my heart!

Not as Impressed as i expected to be

By B_comingfrom_C |

Always wanted to try this and came with group of 12. First, free valet parking excellent and car was ready and waiting. Service was super slow to take orders, a minor annoyance. House Salad was pretty good. Food ordered was some pasta dishes and some steaks. General consensus among group was Ribeyes were just ok, not $60 ok. Pasta was adequate, Veal was adequate.

Spaghetti? At Gene & Georgetti's steakhouse?

By Taylor B |

My father loved to cook. As a dental surgeon in the First Infantry Division during World War II, he often cooked fresh meals for soldiers in his regiment. He especially loved to cook spaghetti. At home, he filled a large pot with ground beef, Italian sausage, crushed tomatoes, bay leaves, onion, herbs, olives, garlic cloves, mushrooms, parmesan, tomato sauce, eggs, bread crumbs, peppers and shrimp. It was an all-day project. So now I'm on a quest to find the best spaghetti-making restaurants in Chicago. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Gene and Georgetti, Chicago's oldest steakhouse, also makes a great dish of spaghetti and meatballs. Located at 500 North Franklin Street, at Grand, in the River North neighborhood, this family-owned restaurant opened in 1941. Open from 11 to 10:30 Sunday through Thursday and 11 to 11 on Friday and Saturday, it has built a reputation as one of the city's finest steakhouses. My wife and I started with shrimp cocktail, minestrone and Caesar salad with home-made white anchovy dressing and parmigiano with grilled chicken. For an entree, my wife chose veal Marsala with Vesuvio potatoes, garlic, white wine and sauteed mushrooms. The waiter looked at him awkwardly when I ordered spaghetti with mushrooms, clams, shrimp and calamari in a light tomato sauce with house-made meatballs. A different version from most traditional recipes but delicious just the same. Dad would have appreciated it. So did I. For dessert, we shared tiramisu and flan.

Atmosphere and great food

By Kimberly C |

This place is a gem. It seems dark but the wait staff are bright and friendly. Unfortunately, I do not know our waiters name but he and the rest of the staff were exceptional. Helpful and friendly and able to make us feel like we were visiting old friends. The food was wonderful. Steak cooked to perfection and the ravioli was superb. I’m not a big pasta fan but this was delicious. My martini was perfect and the wine recommendation was spot on. I really can’t say enough good things about this place. It is an old school family Italian and steak place nothing fancy nothing modern but it sticks to the principle of good food and comfort. Don’t pass it by.

Romantic Birthday meal

By Jerrod G |

This was without doubt the beat steak meal we have ever had in the US. Having traveled a lot around Europe and the US, I must say this place is a true gem. How this restaurant doesn’t top the list of best steakhouses in America I do not know. The staff is amazing. The restaurant is beautifully unchanged and the food is to die for. This is hands down our new favorite steak house in Chicago. Having gone to Peter Luther’s earlier in the year I feared Gene and Georgetti’s would have too much to live up to competing on the national and international scale. They exceed all expectations. The T-none for two was perfect! The soup was dynamite and the drinks were expertly crafted. The deserts were amazing and the shrimp was the best we had ever had in our lives.

A classic in Chicago

Hebe & Georgette is a type mob period restaurants CHICAGO, ti look like you are in a place 60 years ago. Great service, we where 2 people and we order. Prime Rib, and size was to BIG!

The Real Deal..

By AJBQ |

Been here a few times & I've never been disappointed, quite the contrary. First the salads are all fresh & tasty, the shrimp de jonghe (shrimp & garlic) is phenomenal. I get it every time I've gone there. The Veal chop is also delicious but you can't go wrong with any of the wet aged steaks either!! The service is impeccable & knowledgeable. Also a great selection of wines for every palette. Enjoy this place is special...

Wonderful Italian Restaurant and Steakhouse

By David20130609 |

One of Chicago favorite restaurants. Great service and Italian food. We had the Italian meat and cheese plater and loved it. Our main dishes were great. Even go extra potatoes. Half portions worked for us. Only negative was the corkage fee was $30 (2018) and seemed high.

EXCELLENT PASTA and AMAZING SERVICE ..!!!

Old school steakhouse

By Penelope E |

I've been going to Gene & Georgetti's since the 1970's and they never disappoint. The floor boards squeak and that sound means it's been around for quite some time. The steaks are generous and cooked perfectly! Service is impeccable, cocktails are crafted, and it feels like you're surrounded by family. Make a reservation.

True Old School Chicago Steakhouse

By JoeyH01 |

I was first at Gene and Georgetti's 40 years ago. A visit last week showed than nothing much has changed. That's a good thing. I had a generous order of fried calamari, a half order (3 double cut) lamb chops, and a side of pasta. The calamari came with lots of lemon wedges (which I like) and marinara sauce, They were hot and crispy. Not overcooked. The medium temperature lamb was perfect. The pasta is listed as main courses but they were happy to do a side order portion. Oh, and the bread service was outstanding (if only the butter wasn't so cold). The included salad with blue cheese was cold and crisp. Nothing fancy but just fine. The dinner also comes with fried potatoes which are mediocre. G&G has the reputation that the long tenured waiters are kind of brusque, but that wasn't the case at all this visit. Service was friendly and professional without being overbearing. They took care of me as a solo diner just as well as the 4 and 6 tops around me. I was not rushed at all. If the word "trendy" catches your eye in restaurant recommendations, this is probably not the place for you. But if you want steak, chicken, or pasta served in the classic Chicago old school way, there's no better place than Gene and Georgetti's.

Classic Prime Italian Steakhouse

By Mahalo123 |

The staff are friendly from when you walk in to the restaurant. It is old school Chicago steakhouse. Small but intimate dining. My wife and I split a friend ravioli and a wedge salad with bacon and blue cheese. For an entree we split a Broiled Strip Loin Steak. All were well prepared and served. Really enjoyable night.

Bone-In Tomahawk Rib Eye

By Jack Jacoby |

It's not on the menu, but all I can suggest is: Bone-In Tomahawk Rib Eye, Bone-In Tomahawk Rib Eye, Bone-In Tomahawk Rib Eye, Bone-In Tomahawk Rib Eye. You get the picture.

Almost more wait staff than customers. You water is always full.

By Troy |

If you are looking for Chicago traditional mom and pop Italian then Gene & Georgetti’s Is the place. Nothing fancy just a good local restaurant. No need to dress up too much although you can and some still do. Almost more wait staff than customers. You water is always full. Great servers. VERY attentive. We had ravioli , steak and the house salad. All were great. We will be back yet again.

Chicago's Historical Steakhouse...

By Stephen |

Once entering the restaurant, one will observe that this is a establishment with a long history. The ambiance and decor still retains the 40's era look. After loosening up with cocktails, we commend with Stuffed Mushroom" appetizers. A little bit of a disappointment as the stuffing was somewhat cold inside. For the mains, I opted for the Filet-Mignon (rare) which came with roasted sliced potatoes, and my wife chose the Linguine with Clam Sauce. Both dishes were good. For sides, we shared a plate of grilled Asparagus which was excellent (very well seasoned). The meal was definitely reasonably priced.

Annual Christmas Trip

By Mdk71 |

A group of us go to Chicago during December to shop, eat, drink and be merry. G & G has been on our list for some time. The food is mediocre at best. The service was mediocre. This guy couldn’t get us out of there fast enough. He’s been there awhile. Expensive. For the money and experience, we have enjoyed so many other places. If you are on limited time in Chicago, go somewhere else.

Dark environment

By FT1973 |

I guess someone could say It is romantic but For my standards this was far too "darkish" environment. Lights are very low, furniture and wall paper is brown, floor is dark... I mean, why don't you rethibk it in a more modern way. Food is expensive and the quality is just ok, nothing really special I would. I can't say about the meat as I didn't have any.

Steaks Superb, Sides So-so

By Rayna D |

The steaks were superb, one of best we've had....very tender and tasty. The walnut Romaine salad was chopped up with oil and vinaigrette dressing ( a lot). I was expecting a Caesar dressing. The cottage fries were crispy and hard to chew. Wait staff attentive. The Gene and Georgetti wine was very good.

An acquired taste

By JDUK1 |

I really enjoyed this place but can see why others (including my dining companion) may not. The place is properly old-school (far more so than Gibson’s) with a largely geriatric clientele (and not much younger waitstaff!) - unfortunately this means that there is something of a fustiness to the odour and ambience. However the cocktail and food (crab cakes, prime rib) were of very good quality - and a steal for the the price in a city as expensive as Chiraq ($9 for cans of Heineken by the River ?!?!) You will get some unfriendliness as a “non regular” but a dgaf attitude goes along way, as elsewhere in life. 3*s is very harsh for the quality of food and drink on offer here but I cannot get away from the obvious fact that they do not particularly welcome non-regular/ local custom (which is of course a cardinal failing for any restaurant purporting to be more than a local canteen). Oh well - I guess that is the the kind of personality produced by repeated harsh winters!

Best dinner in Chicago!

By Cindy B |

Wonderful, old-school atmosphere. Impeccable, professional service matched with delightful salads, dinner and wine.

This place remains in the “Holy Sh#t!!!” Category after 15years. WOW!!

By mangiamd |

I went there while in med school as often as possible. The food is ridiculous. Homemade pasta, homemade Bleu cheese dressing, large beautiful cuts of red meat cooked perfect. Amazing cannolis, Terimisu. Now... 15yrs later... I’m back... and the place is as good as ever. The waiters surround you with service. A finished plate or utensil doesn’t last 5 seconds before its whisked away. Notably.... the “pepper steak” is three towers of perfectly cooked filet mignon with sautéed peppers, onions and mushrooms. I’m a total carnivore. I usually get ribeyes and skirt steaks, but here... at this place.... this is an amazing dish. Also, the “steak brochette” is not to be confused with bruschetta. This dish is three huge pieces of filet mignon with roasted pork belly on them with grilled large mushrooms. Frigging ridiculous. The cavatelli with vodka sauce 💦 ridiculous. The desserts were awesome as well. Definitely go and enjoy. This is one of the easiest reviews. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😊

Good food and great location!

By RickD774 |

This is a great place to conduct business. Close to highways, O'Hare and the business community, its my default location for anyone who is traveling from the city or the suburbs to meet. The food is good, I like the salads and the deserts. Covered parking next door make it great in the winter time and tons of meeting space on site.

Great atmosphere

By n0rbert07 |

in this restaurant not much has probably changed over the last 50 years. The decor is the same as long time ago. The food, particularly steaks, is excellent; the service staff very friendly and helpful. You always want to go back to this place

First-class Italian and steak

By Robert L |

A busy Friday evening in a calm-environment, Victorian townhouse setting for the outstanding, gracious, and moderately-priced (unless you get the 48 oz steak but that's probably a good deal, too!) neighborhood-feel River North restaurant, near everything in downtown Chicago. Italian specialties looked ideal, and my beef fillet tournados were perfect. The minestrone is equal to (or better) than any I've ever had, and by far the best in years. Young families early, young couples, academic-conference-looking groups, multi generation families, and date night. Efficient and attentive while unhurried. My fillet medallions came with minestrone (or salad) and pan sauteed potatoes -- all delicious -- for $28.75 ! Are you kidding me? Half order of A+ onion rings added $5.85, Peroni in a frosty glass $7, big chunk of Spumoni $7.75, and coffee $3.00. With $6 tax, $58.35. Top service from Jose. Can't beat it. Traditional decor, multiple small dining rooms -- terrific.

Great place to celebrate

By senorita48 |

Our party of nine thoroughly enjoyed our meals! The service was impeccable, the servings were plentiful-we all took leftovers home, and the food was absolutely delectable. Don't hesitate to make reservations at this fine establishment!

What can I say? Delicious!

By Nicole G |

I have to admit I was a little skeptical but it was amazing. The food and service were wonderful. We had two vegetarians and they were very accommodating. I know it says on the menu that steaks are what they are known for but the Italian dishes were to die for! The veal scallopini was absolutely wonderful. The sauce was incredible. The calamari and chicken parm were great as well. Definitely recommend this local joint. I only got a picture of the house salad for some reason. It’s a must to get the house Italian dressing, nothing fancy but good. Also the portions are Hugh so you can share!

Excellant-Old School

By Richard L |

Very good all the way around. Old school, "Rat Pack" feel, to one of Chicago's best steak houses. Went for a birthday last Sat night and the evening was not disappointing. Surf and turf, I highly recommend.

Great restaurant/wrong wine

By Joe B |

I really like this restaurant and the food is excellent. I withheld one star because of a mixup with the wine we ordered. We thought we had ordered a bottle red Italian wine for $60. Instead when the bill came we were charged $250 for a more expensive wine. Both of these wines were at the top of the wine list on separate pages. We pointed to what we thought was the $60 bottle. It was probably an honest mistake; we should have inspected the bottle closer before it was opened. The wine was excellent and the additional cost is no problem but I hope it was just an honest mistake.

G&G dinner

By Angela I |

Service exceptional, Italian dishes average, steak and sides were excellent. I would give them another chance as our reservation was very late evening and could have been a misstep on the pasta.

You want great food and atmosphere? Look no further.

By Eljay329 |

Our six person party shared various appetizers and all had different entrées--no a morsel was left. From the calamari to the Caesar Salad, OMG. We were greeted by the barmen and treated like royalty by the wait staff. Do not miss eating here!

There is a reason they have been in Chicago since 194/

By brendaday |

We had a wonderful birthday dinner at G and G. I was so glad I chose it because the food and service was terrific. It is old school but can still rock the food. We had burrata with prosciutto and carpaccio as apps and a great ravoli with sausage along with NY strip sliced and topped with arugula. Fabulous spumoni.

Chicago Classic

Good Italian, great service, make sure you reserve seats! I went on a Wednesday and it was busy, can’t imagine what a Saturday looks like!

A must for tourists! Or anyone!

By Erica S |

We were in Chicago from Upstate NY for 4 nights. We made a reservation at G&G for our last dinner after much research. We were NOT disappointed. The atmosphere, the service and the food were all top notch. We were a family of myself, my husband, 1 teen, 1 tween and 3 grandparents. We all loved our dinner. They do have a kids menu if you ask. Filet mignon’s were all cooked as requested and were nice cuts. Cheese ravioli with marinara was very good. Kids spaghetti with a giant meatball was devoured by a picky eater. The sides are large enough to share and we had the spinach and broccolini. They were both cooked perfectly with great flavor. The bartender made GREAT cocktails. Giant piece of chocolate cake was shared at the end and was a perfect way to end our meal. The staff all seemed to live their jobs, the manager on duty was friendly and attentive. All I can say is you must go when in Chicago!

Not up to expectations

By Katkev23 |

We were very disappointed in the tomahawk steak special for $115. There were 4 of us and decided to share it. We had been there before and the portions were huge. It was a 32 oz steak. When it came, there was barely enough meat for two. The waiter should have told us that they weren’t big enough to share but at $115 who would have thought it. The quality of the shrimp cocktail was very good. The more I think about that steak the angrier I get and now won’t go back.

Real Italian restaurant

Amazing food and service. Pasta is really homemade and all the ingredients are very fresh. It’s so far my best Italian restaurant experience in chicago

A very nice historic restaurant

By AlamoGQ |

From the moment you walk in, this is a high class restaurant. Not a suit and tie restaurant but just very classy. The waiters look emaculate like they just stepped out of a movie. The service is superb and the food delicious. Steaks are great as are the pork chops.

Classic, Historical, Authentic and Delicious!

By Tom D |

This is a classic Italian Steakhouse in every sense. Full of history, authentic, and a proven winner since 1941. Dining establishments come and go, and Gene and Georgetti has sustained a tradition of excellence throughout. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and experienced. Our food was very good. Star of the show was the medium rare New York Strip - done to absolute perfection with a marvelously delicious sear. Make this a stop in your Chicago dining.

Great and Historical Restaurant

By Alberto H |

Some visitors may not appreciate the old school charm and history of this restaurant but my colleagues and I truly enjoyed it. Great food, great service, and still very popular amongst locals and tourists. Definitely, a restaurant worth visiting.

Beef, mussels, calamari

By idzilla |

We made a reservation for 6:00 pm, grabbed the corner booth and indulged! Grilled calamari and mussels for the appetizer. Porterhouse for the main dish with sides of sautéed mushrooms and asparagus. The beef is straight out good with little seasoning, just a very nice cut. Wait staff is very attentive. The place starts to get a bit loud and packed around 7:00 pm. Caveat to being popular and a Chicago tradition. Great dinner!

Old style restaurant experience

By Traveler852000 |

My husband and I went here for dinner on a recent trip to Chicago. If you go, I recommend reserving a table in the room that houses the bar area on the main floor in the front of the restaurant as it's the only area with windows, and has a much better overall atmosphere than the rest of the restaurant. We were initially seated upstairs in one of the back rooms that was very much like a banquet hall. We asked to be seated downstairs - there was no room in the bar area room, so we sat in the back room downstairs which again was banquet room like but better than upstairs. We shared the ribeye steak which we both found to be tough and lacking in flavor. We also shared the spaghetti and meatballs and they were pretty good. The mashed potatoes were excellent and I am pretty picky about my mashed potatoes! Creamy and delicious. I can't say I would ever go back with so many other options in Chicago, but the restaurant was pretty packed and seems like a popular place.

Completely Perfect Dinner!

By SheShopsTooMuch |

We had an exceptional evening at Gene & Georgetti! Alex, our server, was perfect. He was friendly, knowledgeable and charming. Absolutely excellent! The crab cakes were phenomenal. The New York Strip was one of the best steaks we've ever had and the side of pasta was outstanding. It was an unforgettable night. We can't wait to come back!

Old World Italian Charm

By jojoruss |

We ate lunch here during restaurant week. The ambience of the restaurant was just like being in Italy. What a great compliment to the restaurant that I also heard a lot of Italian being spoken at the the tables. I started with "The garbage Salad" which was probably one of the best salads I have ever had. My partner started with "The Tortellini Soup". He actually wanted to order another bowl but we had too much food already coming our way. For main courses we had "Chicken Milanese and Alaskan Cod". Both were exceptional!! For dessert "Tiramasu and Spumoni" once again both were delicious. If I lived in Chicago this would definitely be my place to go for good Italian food!!

It was just OK

By jmags2013 |

We arrived at 5:30pm on a Thursday for dinner--without a reservation. While they seated us, they provided menus and offered drinks but out party was definitely a forgotten table. We were waiting and waiting for service. After I hailed a waiter, we placed our order--Fettuccini lobster, filet, and chicken parmesan. My friends liked their dishes but I thought mine was just ok. The chicken had fat on it and served luke warm. We were gone before the 7:00pm rush but I felt for the name and supposed reputation, there was room for improvement. Would I dine here again? Probably not. There are so many other great Italian restaurants in Chicago I would rather visit.

Top Notch Service and Excellent Food

By Spyeyes |

Gene and Georgette is a family owned and operated restaurant in Chicago. This restaurant is known for their aged steaks and great food. But I have found that above all it’s really comes done to customer service. The service here is Amazing. You definitely will be catered to and still have a Feeling of being amongst family . The food here is outstanding and so is the service. Must try if visiting Chicago or even if your a local.

Low end of premium houses

By cb1_10 |

I can tell the cuts of meat are good but the preparation and cooking were subpar. One of our steaks varied from rare to medium in a medium order. Mine was lacking much flavor and had charred edges. Sides were so-so. Service above average. Not on top of the value scale

Once again fantastic service and food! Great drinks as well. The "Old Fashion" is a must. We try to dine here every time we are in Chicago. Service always above and beyond.

The best Italian dinner in Chicago!

By Halina D |

I came here for dinner with some friends last night and had an incredible experience. From the amazing blood orange sidecar, to the sausage and peppers appetizer, to the baby gem salad, to all the pastas and entrees we shared together. The food was amazing, the staff was incredible, and the overall experience had us excited for our next visit. Thank you G&G!!

A classic Chicago steakhouse.

Right under the L in a great area of town. Classic steak house with white table cloths and professional servers. Food is always the winner here. Great atmosphere at the bar where the locals hang out and talk about the day. Just a fun place to be without attitude.

Wow just wow!

This was my first visit, my husband and are are working through all the notable Chicago steakhouses. This was his birthday, we opted for an early dinner because our kids were with us. The service is what I will remember most. My kids are 8 and 12 and are generally well behaved, I had to ask my son to use his library voice and for the most part he did. We had a few oopsies my son ordered split pea soup and didn't like it, the waiter immediately exchanged it with the other two options and allowed him to pick one. My son dropped his napkin the waiter was there immediately with a new one. My daughter spilled her water and once again a quick rescue from two of the staff. Our food was great we ordered bacon and blue cheese app, shared a ribeye and some ravioli, double baked potato, ceaser salad. Everything was wonderful but the service was extrordinary! My ONLY disappoinment is that they did nothing to recognize my husband's birthday and I am not sure if this is not a place to do this it they were getting busy. The staff was wonderful, patient, attentive, and playful with my kids which made up for lack of celebration. We also made friends with our neighbors at another table who said they had been coming to G&G for 30years, I totally understand why!!!

Very nice

My old friends and i had our annual reunion and wanted a fine dining experience. We had no complaints as they met our expectations. We had steaks and eggplant parmigiana everything was great as well as the service. The only complaint would be the salad and bread they were a little basic. The prices were average for a steakhouse.

Never a bad meal

By Suzi H |

This is my favorite steakhouse in all of Chicago. Although they have opened another site in the burbs, they aren’t the usual chain like others are. The old school decorations, same employees for years and great food makes this my 1st choice in a steakhouse. They have valet parking. There isn’t much room to wait for your reservation and only about 12 seats at the bar. If you are looking for a special place to celebrate anything, this is the spot!

Great Chicago steakhouse

By Agamboaj |

It was an amazing Tomahawk , perfectly cooked. Tender in the inside, crispy in the outside. Side of potatoes was great, too. Ceasar salad was great, just perhaps the croutons were a big chewy va crunchy. Great “old fashioned “ Chicago decoration and excellent service. Much better than any fancy chain steak house.

Nice surprise

By butterfly067Italy |

Historical restaurant with a classic and traditional decor. Mainly dark wood. Food is good and real Italian , with not too much “Americanization”. Lamb chop is amazing. Friendly service. I never eat Italian outside of Italy, but it was a nice surprise…

Excellent

First time in Chicago, and told our friends, we wanted to go to a restaurant, one has to go to for a first time visit. We are so glad. Two of us had the Filet Migon, excellent quality of meat. All dishes were excellent. Excellent service. Great ambiance.

Old School Classic!!

By avondaledave |

Great steaks and Italian dishes!! Been around since 1941. A must stop if in the downtown area on business. If not just get down there. Highly recommend making a reservation but if not the bar is great, before and after your meal.

Chicago classic

By James C |

Haven’t been here in a long time- wanted to take my son to a Chicago classic- so G & G. Met and lead upstairs- seated immediately. Couple apps and the Bistecca Fiorentina. Steak was great as were the sides. You have to ask for the cottage fries now! Great service. Love the corkage fee option. Well done!

Amazing Steak

The steak we had at this establishment was the culinary highlight of our long weekend in Chicago. Staff were great and the food was excellent. Not a huge place but the food and the ambiance were delightful.

Not up to the standard of Chicago steakhouses

By Travel372667 |

I've been to many of the great Chicago steakhouses and had always wanted to go to this legendary spot. We were seated upstairs, which was already disappointing. It is tired and old looking, with no character. We were also seated next to the kitchen and heard noise from the kitchen all night; they kept calling out "Julio!". The steaks were average at best and one of ours was significantly undercooked (asked for medium and got rare). That shouldn't happen in a place fabled for their steaks. The potatoes that come with the meal were embarrassing, soggy and tasteless. We ordered mashed potatoes that had the consistency of something out of a box. I couldn't believe the line of people waiting to dine when we were leaving. Probably tourists who didn't know better. This place is not even close to Steak 48, Chicago Cut, GIbson's, RPM Steak, or a dozen other steak joints in town. I won't go back and neither should you.

Better than ever

By Lee A |

New menu that has the classics plus a several new items. Same great service and vibe with food that’s better than ever. Interesting new pastas, a few new takes on their excellent steaks and starters. I was apprehensive at first, but G&G managed to effectively update without losing a bit of their character and history. No longer have their bread basket or potato discs but as good as they were, they’re not missed. Even the spumoni has a new twist and is great. Highly recommend as no nonsense classic chicago

Great atmosphere,steaks and service

By traveler |

Our yearly trip for the Christmas Season in Chicago. I had the 20 oz rib eye and my wife the filet. Both were excellent as always. We took some home. The seasoning was perfect and both were cooked to perfection. My wife said she could cut her filet with her fork. Side of thin sliced potatoes come with an entree as does a side salad. We had the fried ravioli as an appetizer. The meat ragu that came with it was delicious. Our waiter was attentive but did not rush us as we enjoyed a couple cocktails before dinner and over our appetizers. The dark wood decor, old school Chicago atmosphere and experienced staffing never goes out of style in a plastic world. Not inexpensive but great for a special occasion. We have made this a must stop for years and will return again and again.

OK food, nice ambience

By worldtraveler77077 |

Staff and ambience were good. We sat in a quiet spot on second floor. If you need a quiet spot, that works well. I found the actual food to be OK, perhaps overpriced.

Old School Italian

Everything from the ambience to the food was excellent! My friends and I would definitely go back again. Be prepared to spend some money but it is well worth it. The wait staff are very attentive and friendly.

Good food

By Will G |

The dessert was really good so was the mashed potatoes also, the water was from Italy. It was good too. I definitely recommend going to this place. It is good.😋😋😋🤤🤤

Exquisite!

By accuracy_counts |

Unique atmosphere, ever-present service, wine & drink list was impressive, & SO many remarkable choices from the menu. In fact, that will be the diner’s difficulty. Even tho it’s an Italian steakhouse, the chicken vesuvio was a “stand out” @ the table!! We also ordered Carpaccio, filet mignon, pork chops, & pasta. No one left hungry as portions were abundant.

Excellent....a very special occasion!

By newidad |

Joined by our son and his wife we enjoyed an excellent three course meal of steak favorites plus a super Barbera wine. Service by Carlos was most helpful but not intrusive, so we loved the ambience and the pace of the meal. What made it so special for me was that I last ate there a full 50 years ago when I lived nearby and worked in the grain industry. Angelo and Kushi knew and treated us especially well. A happy return to a place that I remembered well with really great memories. Thank you all!

Great experience all around!

By JBombs18 |

It has been a long time since we have been to Gene & Georgetti's and I was a little worried that the time didn't sit well at this restaurant. My mom and 5 sisters were heading to see Hamilton and we wanted a lunch that would accommodate all of our tastes and allow for easy parking. We don't get together that often like this so I was hoping it was as good as I remember. The food was excellent but our waiter truly made our day all the more special. He was professional yet so warm that I felt like we were there once a week. Could not have been better. We arrived early on a Saturday for lunch which was great because they fill up fast. Valet parking was so easy but at that time we could have parked anywhere on the street. We went during Restaurant Week and I had an amazing meal topped with tiramisu which was the best I have ever had. The cod was perfect and the rapini was was not bitter at all. 2 of my sisters had the garbage salad and there wasn't a bite left on their plates. I highly recommend giving Gene & Georgettis a stop but make sure to call for reservations unless you get there when they open.

Authentic Italian Food

By Katrina S |

If I could give them 10 stars for authentic Italian food I would! This is by far the BEST restaurant for food and service! It never disappoints!!!! If you are looking to have delicious food and a good time, sit at the bar. They have the best entertainment. I absolutely love this place!

A classic restaurant with outstanding service and food.

By E P |

First timer here to Gene & Georgetti and I will definitely come back. My friend who invited me to lunch told me the place was special and after having lunch, I would have to agree. It just had a vibe to it, where I felt I was transported back in a different time. The service was incredible. Attentive but not overbearing. We were checking on a way that felt like we were old friends. And then menu had so many different choices. Given it was lunch, I chose the Salmon and it was cooked just right. The Brussels spouts plate was piled high with Brussel sprouts and the potatoes with the fish were plentiful and delicious. I can't wait to come back some night for a dinner and really enjoy the atmosphere and a steak.

Nice but not great.

By Thomasmelcho W |

Went to the restaurant because of its reputation, with a party of three. One ordered the ribeye, one the New York strip, and the prime. All ordered medium rare, two came medium rare and one medium to medium well, the server didn't stop to check if what we got is what we ordered, thus consumed our meat. The steaks did not come up to the quality you would have suspected from a place with this reputation. We could have found similar steaks at any less reputable restaurant for cheaper price. Will not return.

LOVE; always feel at home here

By MultiKultiORD |

I have been a loyal patron for the last 10 years. I tend to go to Gene & Georgetti about once a month. Each time happy. Sometimes i have steak. Sometimes something always. So often order the eggplant parmigiana .... Their potatoes servings delicious...asparagus, same. If you order steak, stick with the rib eye or filet mignon. Servers are real good. Most if not all, have worked there for a long long time. Ambiance has an interesting vibe. Avoid the second floor as feels a bit too claustrophobic. All in all, i love Gene & Georgetti. Great Carpaccio Even Better Bartender

By Craig T |

Jennifer mixes some of the smoothest tastiest drinks you will find anywhere. Carpaccio isn't even found on most restaurant menus. But it is worth trying when you do find it, and it is done perfectly here. These guys treat beef right. Well worth the visit.

Quintessential Chicago Steak House

By carlosdieppa |

This steakhouse does all the chop house classics better than the rest, the steaks wet aged and dry aged all great. Sides like ceasar salad and pasta like caccio e pepe all make for a great dinner. It is clear why when in Chicago Frank Sinatra was a regular.

Excellent Chicago Restaurant

By dontcare1973 |

The atmosphere was excellent right off the bat. Food, drinks and wait staff were exceptional. I recommend the Chicken Parm and all the desserts. My friend had a great steak. We will definitely go back next time we are in Chicago!

Disappointing visit

By William B |

While visiting my Nephew in Chicago recently I took him out for a steak dinner the last night of my visit. Based on recommendation of a good friend I choose Gene & Georgetti’s. Oldest steakhouse in Chicago. Fortunately I made reservations well in advance as this Chicago icon was packed when we arrived. Atmosphere was excellent! Old school steakhouse with photos and paintings on wall. Waiters appear to be all Italian and old school servers as well. Nephew ordered the 14oz New York strip, medium rare. He’s a big boy and ate every bite. I ordered the 18oz New York Strip bone in, medium rare. Although it was very tasty and I was able to eat all of it it came much more rare than medium, and got rarer the closer I got to the bone, where it became almost blood rare. Based on the tariff of over $400 with tip it was disappointing. Based on their reputation I expected better. As a result, when looking for a high end steakhouse in Chicago, I would recommend somewhere else . Will not be back.

A Chicago landmark for great steaks!

By Azntiger |

While visiting Chicago over the Labor Day weekend, my brother took us here for dinner Saturday night. The place was packed, but fortunately we had reservations and only had to wait a few minutes to be seated. It looked like they had 2 dining rooms plus an additional room upstairs. We were seated in the second dining room behind the bar area (which was a lot quieter). The decor reminded me of an old traditional Italian restaurant with white table cloths over wooden tables. Nice old-fashioned dishes made for a very cozy atmosphere. The servers were nice, friendly and attentive! We ordered the calamari as an appetizer and it was delicious, nice and crisp. For my entree I ordered the fillet mignon and it was prepared perfectly! It same with wide sliced potatoes. Dessert was a yummy lemon cake! Everyone had a great time and we know that we’ll be back!

Board dinner

By BJL2342 |

A group of professionals ate dinner here after a successful board meeting. We were seated in the bar room up stairs so had the room to ourselves. I had a delicious rib eye steak cooked perfectly. Service was excellent. Wine was wonderful!!

Wonderful experience

Been here once before and it’s still so great. Wonderful service and exceptional food. Atmosphere is perfect as well. Will definitely be back.

Filet for life

By shapeshifter2016 |

Had to give it a try as we were in town for New Years.... Old style Italian restaurant... Waiter many years employed and he new we were not regulars so it was a quick Intro and convo Cole slaw was finely diced and vinegar based with wonderful taste and salads were large....ravioli was average but filet was amazing ... Fried potatoes were not needed and over cooked... Chicken Parmesan with meatballs were excellent... The regulars get all the attention and that's ok but plz don't take there order before us when we were seated 15 min before the regulars....happy new year!

Fun, Carved out of Chicago History, Best Steaks

By Jim M |

Had not been in years and took a team and had great meals, service and the place still makes you feel like you are in a movie...Waiting for the guys with tommy guns to crash through the door. Classic and well preserved.

the best steak you ever had

This place is cult. the kitchen is superb and the the history incredible. This has been my favorite place for years. Try a prime rib and you will not regret it. The place has an exiting history - ask and you will be surprised.

Great Beef

Our food was very good. Steak, lamb chops and chicken parmigiana. Service was very attentive but we felt rushed.

What a piece of .......

By itravelerChicago |

The restaurant is old with stained carpets, rickety stairs, and poorly tasting food. They don’t have the best steaks or the Italian food. The steakhouses in the area have much better steaks and presentation. The Italian dishes are not tasty at all. The old restaurant should be torn down and replaced. Very disappointed.

Great quality, service, ambiance

By John H |

Walking in, you're greeted with beautiful wood, deep red leather booths, white tablecloths, and a thoroughly professional wait staff. We decided to split a Caesar salad (good thing, as it was a large portion for both of us). Fresh and well-prepared, this was a great start to the dinner. I got the 8 ounce Filet Mignon and it was perfectly medium-rare and delicious. My wife ordered the Eggplant Parmesan and it was a wonder of taste and presentation. Thinly-sliced and stacked layer upon layer, this was a fantastic dish. (I got to share as it was a very generous helping). I got a half-order of mushrooms as a side. Once again, I can't imagine a full order,as the half-order was huge. And, once again, excellent flavor. Our server was excellent: Knew the menu, provided excellent answers to all our questions and provided timely, well-paced service. They have a comprehensive wine list including some super Italian and California selections. I wish we had enough room to finish with dessert, but we were both full. Just a super experience all the way around.

Treated like family

By David H |

My son and I are here for the first time. The food was incredible. Carpaccio for appetizer. Cacio Pepe pasta and steak for dinner. Everything was great but the service was over the top. Pasta and steak was prepared to share. Sergio was great. Will definitely be back.
