Awesome Breakfast!

By Steel |

This is an awesome breakfast spot! It is always hard to find a good breakfast place. This restaurant is a lot bigger than we originally thought. It has a great breakfast area and a bar, so you can get Bloody Mary’s with your meal if you want. The food and service were spectacular. I especially enjoyed Genies special home fry potatoes, and my husband liked the sausage biscuits and gravy - he said they needed to smother the biscuits in more gravy, though. The food was priced fairly, too. Will definitely eat there again next time we visit Portland!

Unbeatable breakfast!

By Kiraboo |

We ate here on a Saturday at 3 pm, and had no wait at all. There's a great selection on the menu, very reasonable prices, and quick service. The food was fantastic! Perfect scrambled eggs, thick & crispy bacon, divine roasted potatoes, and yummy sourdough bread. I ate until I thought I would bust. The only complaints would be that it was pretty noisy even though it was not crowded, and that it was kind of dirty. We sat next to the mirror and there was a very large smear on it, as well as smudges & flecks of stuff on the walls. Not nearly enough to keep us from going back, though. Question: is it Genie's or Genies? Everything on their website, including photos of the restuarant, lacks the apostrophe, but their Facebook page includes it, as does the copyright statement on their website. Confusing.

Hidden Gem

There are lots of breakfast places in Portland, and Genie's should definitely be on your radar screen. Menu diverse, and they offer great beverage choices! Had the chicken sausage scramble with rye bread toast, and perfectly fried potatoes! Yum, yum!! There are many choices, and I can't wait to go back.

Great Breakfast!

By ElisaInAustin |

Loved this place! We got seated quickly and the breakfast was the best. Service was fast and friendly. The coffee was good...the eggs were good...what more could you ask for!

Even when the servers ignore me and my need for coffee, I still love the food and will happily go back for more abuse.

Great hole in the wall

By KSeater |

We were warmly greeted on the Sunday morning we visited. We were instructed to sit where we liked. The staff was friendly. We ordered the biscuits and gravy and the florentine omelet. Both were excellent. It's a quaint little diner that I would go back. They did have mimosas and bloody Mary's but we didn't try either. The place was pretty packed when we left. We would return.

Biscuits and Gravy Delight!

By Orion G |

Surprisingly empty at 9am on Thursday. Wait staff very friendly and attentive. We both ordered Biscuits and Gravy. I added potatoes to mine. The food came out fairly quickly and was large! The gravy was made with Italian sweet sausage instead of a Jimmy Dean kind of sausage that I'm used to getting back home, and I quite liked it. The biscuits were large and tasty. Overall, this was a great breakfast. Only three things negative, not that anything was bad. First, more parking. There just isn't much. Second, more heat. It was a bit chilly in the cafe. As it was already gray, wet and cold outside, warm inside would have been nice. Lastly, more gravy! Them were big biscuits so slather that gravy on me buckos!!

first visit

By ezflyer1 |

This was our first visit to Genie's Café. I got the recommendation from a friend and the food was great. The have very unique items with lots of flavor not just your standard eggs and hotcakes for breakfast. We enjoyed our visit and will probably be back the next time we are in Portland

pumping

i walked in through the bar to find the place empty. being a lovely morning, i wanted to sit outside and eat my breakfast. unfortunately, the only way i could do so was to order take away and eat out of the box. but i was gestured to the front part of the restaurant with large windows. to my surprise, when i stepped to this part, i found it packed. i ordered, again, a single shot of espresso with half the milk. the barista did try his best, came and asked if i wanted a machiato instead. silly me said no and stuck to my guns. shouldn't have - it was nice coffee but too milky. shoot me down guys, me and my milky anthem in us of a. i chose the traditional breakfast, eggs over easy - slightly undercooked, the way i love with dave's killer bread - wheat and spuds. the spuds looked very brown and burnt but when i munched on them, it was so crunchy and so yummy. yes, another sugar anthem. the bread was sweet! i thought only the chinese sweeten their breads. regardless, i enjoyed the generous breakfast.

Eggs Benedict didn't work for me...

By kaemicha |

I went there on Easter and it was full but I was seated quickly. The staff is great and helpful. I had a hot chocolate and it was wonderful..but the eggs benedict were below par. One egg was cooked perfectly but the ham and english muffin were hard and not tasty. I'll go back for a hamburger or something easy but not for eggs Benedict.

good food but we had some bad service there a few times and won't go back.

Busy and promising but the food was uneven in quality. Thumbs up on the Bacon, Thumbs down on the pancakes.

By Milestogo007 |

I was trying to find this New Mexican Restaurant on Division and could not find it, then I tried to get into Pine Street Biscuit but as usual the line was longer than getting tickets for a new Star Wars movie. Ticked off and in a righteous rage, and immensely tired I spied Genie's across the street and saw how many people eating there through the window and decided to give it a shot. You walk in to the building through the saloon portion where this friendly lady who reminded me of Ms. Kitty from Gunsmoke told me it would be a short wait and she would have my named called so I could be seated in the cafe. It was only a short wait and sure enough I was seated. I ordered coffee and the buttermilk pancakes and a side of bacon. The bacon was good, the pancakes were the kind where you could pour a gallon of syrup on them and they would still taste dry. I did not finish these and left the majority on my plate. The atmosphere struck me as strange and tired, but as I said, I felt that way myself. I would suggest ordering an egg dish instead of the pancakes on the next visit.

I can't believe it took me so long to find out about this place. They have the best breakfast in town.

YUMMMMM

By Melanie E |

My cousins picked us up from the airport and it was still morning (yay for pacific time!) and we were all hungry. The first place we went to was closed and Genies was suggested but they were concerned about the wait times. We decided to give it a try and there was just a 15 minute wait and let me tell you it was well worth it!! I got an Eggs Benedict special and it was seriously to die for. Everyone was thrilled with their food an the coffee was delicious. Service was excellent, our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable and attentive. We kept meaning to go back another morning, but just ran out of time. Next time for sure, this place was wonderful.

The best eggs benedict ever

By Jill Harrison |

We waited a long time to be seated, but then understood why there was a line. Delicious food and cocktails. The best eggs benedict I've ever tasted. Yum!

Breakfast Drinks and Breakfast Feast

By Allison J |

I tried the Huevos Rancheros and have never been this satisfied with breakfast, EVER! They also had a great selection of breakfast drinks/cocktails. The service was very high quality, they were attentive, friendly, and fast. There are tons of restaurants in Portland, but we will definitely be dining here during our next visit to Portland!

Yummy breakfast and great service

By AthenaP1 |

We are early birds so we apparently beat the morning rush. My friend ordered a Bloody Mary and I ordered coffee. The coffee came out with real cream, which I was thrilled about. We ordered two scrambles and they were delicious. My friend was obsessed with the Ketchup on the table for her hash browns. All the food was fresh and hot when served. The server checked on us multiple times and was very courteous. By the time we left (I think around 930-ish), they were packed with a waiting list. Great local place.

Egg.cellent!

By pillowandfork |

The best eggs Benedict ever. High quality Canadian bacon, homemade biscuits and light hollandaise sauce with a cage free egg yum! Don't miss the juices!

Genie's has excellent food in a great location.

By Jollydh |

A great place for breakfast. The weekly specials are wonderful as is the regular menu. The corn beef hash is delicious and I love the bacon scramble. I come back again and again.

Service with a smile

By FeltGuy |

A group of us have breakfast every Thursday at different greater Portland area venues. Eight of us enjoyed breakfast here today and enjoyed the bloody mary's and the food. However, it is not often we are served in such a professional and friendly manner as we were today. Our server, sporting armfuls of tattoos and a million dollar smile took exceptional care of our group. She was simply terrific! We'll be back!

My favorite breakfast place in Portland. I've yet to get a bad dish here. Their Genie's Bloody Extra Spicy is AWESOME.

Best Breakfast Potatoes....Ever

By GianaPittsburgh |

Needing to "fuel up" before a day of hiking near the Columbia River Gorge, we took our (local) son-in-law's excellent advice and had breakfast at Genie's. The service was friendly and the food delicious, particularly the roasted potatoes.

Eggs Benedict

By Cororegon |

Perfect eastside Portland restaurant close to Ladds Addition. Great breakfasts including a wonderful vegetarian Eggs Benedict. Nice folks and a good view of the Ford Building across the street.

Bloody Mary heaven

By ajdial |

Well, if you want a bacon or ginger infused Bloody Mary, this is the place! Great drink menu: try the emergency cocktail, excellent. I had a Reuben and it was awesome.

Good breakfast

By ChopperBenny |

Nice area with good food. All breakfast plates were good. Kept the coffee filled. Servers were good.

Another Brooklyn Neighborhood Gem

By elgreco251 |

The blueberry pancakes are large, well-prepared and very satisfying. Genie's always delivers a hearty, satisfying breakfast whenever we have dined. It's one of a handful of good neighborhood restaurants with a specialty in breakfast fare.

Good food!

By Nari L |

The food was excellent! The service was pretty good too! I had a ScoutMob deal so I got 50% off my own meal but not for my bf. Normally, you're able to use the discount on the whole check up to the max but they only let you do it on your meal. I like their coffee. They use Oblique Coffee which is a local roaster in Portland. I like that they support their own local coffee roasters. My bf had the corned beef and hash. I had the Bacon Scramble! I've never had scrambled eggs with stuff in it before. It's like an omelette but the eggs are scrambled in! I loved it! I'm going to do this at home :) Overall, for 2 dishes and a unlimited coffee, I paid $14. That's with my discount of course.

Very hearty breakfast fare!

By Donna S |

We stopped here while visiting family as there was no wait for breakfast. The portions were huge and quite tasty--I would recommend the bacon scramble. My SIL is a biscuit & gravy person & he recommended his breakfast as well. The coffee was plentiful & excellent. Very friendly staff & quick service.

Hole-in-the-wall but great breakfast.

By BobbyGolfs |

My son took us there for breakfast on a Sunday morning somewhat on the early side (for a Sunday that is), 930 or so. We managed to secure one of the last open tables before a fairly large group of patrons began to arrive. I can understand why it is so popular. Breakfast was super - loved the apple chicken sausage. My son ordered pancakes and normally is a big eater - he did not finish his serving. Nothing special in terms of atmosphere, but who cares? The food makes it worth going again.

Great bloody Mary’s

By Madeline Cook |

This is one of my favorite breakfast spots in portland, usually not too busy and open until 3 pm. They have a large list of naturally flavored vodkas to add a nice kick to your Bloody Mary, I like to mix and get two flavors in one, like habanero cucumber. Spicy and refreshing. They have amazing biscuits and gravy but honestly you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Very good prices and always good service.

Bene Breakfast with All the Meats

By Alexandra M |

An early Saturday breakfast to beat the crowd. We had their specials: Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict with potatoes O'Brien and the Three Sausage Hash. Both were delicious. Wish we hadn't been driving so we could have tried a cocktail.

Best scorpion bloody mary

By Ellen G |

Best and spiciest bloody mary ever had. Excellent breakfasts - chicken sausage scramble and Mazatlan omelet. Comfortable seating and great service.

Creative dishes served with a smile

By bScoutke |

I loved this cafe! I love the atmosphere, the art. It's one of those little places that the locals know about and when you first walk in you think, "This is what Portland is about". The staff was helpful and gorgeous and so attentive. I had a huge plate of bacon French Toast with Cream Cheese and Powdered Sugar on top. OH MYLANTA was it good!!!! And very reasonably priced. Seriously, you get A LOT of delicious food for a teeny-tiny price. I will definitely go here again.

Good brunch place

By Lis V |

We enjoyed our brunch there. The food was good, I got the biscuits and gravy and my friends the classic, good too but maybe a bit small. The place was a bit crowded and noisy, not unexpected on a Saturday morning, but much less than other trendier places.

Welcoming, friendly place with good hearty food.

By TXswimmer |

My daughter and I stopped here for lunch on a chilly, rainy Friday. I wanted something warm and hearty and got the beef barley soup and salad. It was a good-sized bowl and was delicious! The salad was fresh and crisp. The quirky part was when I asked for a Coke and she offered RC (Royal Crown cola). I loved that quirkiness in soft drinks offered. The staff was attentive and friendly and seemed to enjoy working there. Background music was vintage '70's, which seemed to be just the right music for this place. I would definitely return.

Great wait and a great breakfast!!

By Zenhair |

This place has it figured out...if they have to wait for breakfast give them coffee or a bloodymary! There is a wait on a Saturday morning, but just put your name on the list and order yourself a nice latte or one of their many infused vodka bloodymarys filled with veggies , sit in their comfortable waiting area and talk story! We were seated within a half an hour and then had a great breakfast. Definitely will go back.

Family Gathering

By 728irisheyes44 |

A new fav for breakfast! Our nephew was in Portland for a "lay over" with his flight crew with JetBlue. We went to Genie's Cafe on the recommendation of our daughter who had been there once. There were 9 of us, and when we walked in, the waiter took the number of people and within minutes had moved tables to accommodate all of us. Ok, that gave us a good vibe about this place. The food came within a reasonable amount of time, and the three youngsters had their hot chocolate almost instantly. We were busy talking so didn't even notice the time. The wait staff continually offered coffee and water. The very positive thing that made me want to give a great review was the ninth person in our party came in when the rest of us were nearly finished, and we knew this would be the case. Again, the waiter took her order, brought it out quickly, and we stayed at this table for another 20 minutes while people stood in line waiting. The staff continued to offer more coffee, never once suggested that we move on, and kept a gracious smile the whole time we were there. Yes, we'll return to Genie's Cafe!

Great food in weird Portland

By John T |

We would have never found this place on our own, it was recommended by a clerk in a clothing store, but we're glad we did. It's got funky Portlandia atmosphere, the servers are all hip and just pleasant enough, and the food is outstanding. We had breakfast on a weekday and walked right in at 9 am but we're told that the line can stretch around the block on weekends. They've got an extensive breakfast menu and everything we ordered was obviously cooked fresh and from quality ingredients. The clientele is eclectic and obviously mostly local.

By Climber72716 |

Excellent stop for breakfast and bloody marys. The service however has much to be desired since the waiter/manager seems to spend time talking to his friends in booths instead of getting good tips and return service. Too bad one person can ruin a whole restaurant.

Charming!

By cathy_pdx |

Enjoyed this little restaurant, service was fastastic, breakfast was delicious! Lucky to find this spot on our way through SE Portland. Strong coffee, which is my favorite and the breakfast cocktails looked wonderful - will have to indulge in those next time!

Has gone downhill a bit...

By Laurel S |

Has gone downhill a bit in the past year but still a great place for a hearty breakfast and a bloody mary! though, I prefer the pint-sized mimosas.

Delish Chicken Fried Steak!

By titantiff |

Delish! Great flavor, fanstastic wait staff even when overwhelmed. The chicken friend steak one time was out of this world and the next almost burnt. But still very good!

Give it a try!!

Friendly staff, good service and interesting food choices. Enjoyed our visit and would go back if in that neighborhood!

My favorite spot in Portland

By Victor L |

Great brunch place. Everything I've ordered was appetizing and delicious. (3 visits) Big up for the bloody marys with infused vodka. If I lived in Portland, this would become my headquarters. I even bought a mug with their logo as a souvenir.

As good as we remembered it

By 1hurleygirl |

Mother's Day brought us back to Genie's - it's not close to where we live, so we don't get there often, but it was so good the first time, we came back as a treat on Mother's Day. I was treated to a 'momosa' - very nice touch. We got the same, cheerful, excellent waitress, and the food pleased and abundantly filled everyone. They've added some new gluten free bread options - I actually had two choices to go with my omelette! Choice was a gluten free English muffin or toast. Luckily we'd gotten there early - there was a huge line when we left!

Doesn't get much better than this!

By Jakklz |

Food was top quality and mighty tasty! Service is always attentive and courteous. I stumbled upon this place a couple of years ago and still go back occasionally. Was just there today and had an omelette that was fantastic! The hollandaise on anything is perfect!! You will not be disappointed! Parking is a bit difficult but certainly worth it. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the restaurant!

Best eggs Benedict I've ever had

By mushu3 |

Had their vegetarian eggs Benedict and it was unreal. The eggs were super soft and the spinach and tomatoes were super flavorful! Waitress was friendly and chai latte was delicious.

It had been quite awhile since I'd been to Genies Cafe, it's even better now than I remember!!! Totally will return. I took a friend who had never been there, SHE loved it as well. We had scrambles for brunch, but they also are open for lunch!! Great service too!!! GREAT value

Great Morning Meal

By Anne |

Just finished a delicious breakfast at Genie's. Sauce for the Spanish Scramble was fantastic - not too hot, but full of flavor. The place is hopping and loud enough that fussy babies were not problem - bring the family! If you're into cocktails, they have a great choice of breakfast goodies.

Hangover Helper

By Sharontwfl |

Bloody Mary's that really do the trick. An extensive Brunch menu to calm even the most wicked hangover. We went for the first time the day after my daughter's 30th birthday... And it was a perfect pick-me-up after an all night celebration. The bacon is good here... Order it. We all were very happy with our choices and really liked the wide open feel of the place. We had an easy time having a nice visit without feeling like we were disturbing other diners. Wait staff was friendly and efficient

Best of the Best Portland Style

By JasonPDX |

This is my favorite breakfast spot in Portland, and that's saying a lot. We live here in PDX, and we frequently go out for breakfast on the weekends. There are lots of great options, but Genie's is always my first choice. The eggs Benedict with taso is my favorite dish--freshly made hollandaise and taso bacon. Yum, dude. There are attentive waitresses (and waiters) with fantastic tattoos and Stumptown coffee, too. How can it get better? I recommend the regular potatoes over the O'Brians, though... they tend to over-cook the O'Brians in my opinion. Also, if you're into that sort of thing, they have excellent breakfast drinks, too, with house infused vodkas for the several fancy Bloody Mary's. This is a must if you're going to be in Portland. Get there early. The line on the weekend gets pretty thick by about 8:30.

Excellent BF choice!

By bobkli19 |

Need to have patience. We are 12 in a group. I am surprized they were able to seat us al together after waiting a while. Food is excellent as per every one having different BF items. My dish came at the end but atleast it is hot and delicious. Definitely go back again. good place to take out of town guests.

Arrive early

By Wanderlust_Bee |

Good food & good service. Love their fresh brewed tea, no tea bags here! Portions are generous. I ordered 1 pancake & it filled the plate.

Best Pancakes Ever!

By Adrian H |

The white chocolate and hazelnut pancakes are to die for, I was surprised to see something like that on the menu and I was not disappointed in how amazing they were. The kitchen was super fast and the staff were nice. Would recommend to anyone!

Pleased everyone

By 1hurleygirl |

Finding a restaurant that everyone in our family really likes and wants to go back to doesn't happen very often. But Genie's was a home run. My daughter who is quite the white hot chocolate connoisseur found it the best she's tasted. She often reminds us we need to go back there. It's not close to where we live, but it's worth the drive when we can make it happen. It screams Portland Hipster, which my husband isn't exactly thrilled about, but even he was impressed with the food. And the waitress whose tattoo gallery was kind of overwhelming charmed us all with her genuine friendliness and attentive waitressing abilities.

Best Omelet Ever!

By Dennis M |

I had a French Quarter Omelet- Shallot & tomato incorporated eggs folded over Cajun seasoned shrimp, crawfish tail meat, bacon & Gruyere cheese, topped with hollandaise. It was sooo delicious. Others enjoyed their Peach French Toast. There is a bar area and they serve specialty drinks like the Creamy Mousse Cocoa, which had orange infused vodka in the cocoa. A little like an chocolate orange stick. Seating can be a little tight, and it's an older place. Decor is simple, and one of the two bathrooms was one of the smallest I've seen that wasn't inside an airplane. Service was friendly. My omelet was a special, which gets rotated in every so often, so I'll have to keep an eye out for its return. Great place for breakfast. Entrance is a little confusing as you continue to walk around the restaurant to the bar area entrance. Then back in to the restaurant. Definitely will return.

Before 9 on a weekend if you don't want to wait.

By Hammytoss |

We eat at Genie's at least 2x a month and have never been disappointed. The eggs Benedict has 4-5 options for your protein. Always very good weekend specials as well. I only wish they had self serve coffee as when they get busy you might wait a bit for a refill. Very good bloody Mary's as well and a friendly staff. It's a good option if Pine state biscuits line is really long and vise versa.

Wow Good. That's how good.

By Maggie O'C |

Quintessential Portland diner. Very friendly service, our waitress was very patient with my indecision. Good turnaround time and it was a crowded Saturday morning. My friend had the Bay of Pigs Benedict with sea scallops and I had a spinach omelet with black truffled cheese and it was Alllll good! Highly recommend. A bit spendy. $30 for breakfast but really good food and portion size.

Best breakfast EVER.

By Michelle P |

I lived in Portland for about five years and almost always chose Genie's for my breakfast/brunch spot. The servers are super friendly and incredibly fun to talk to. The bloody marys are the best I've ever had. Seriously, I've tried finding one that can compare and I'm always disappointed. Breakfast is delicious and they have so many options for vegetarians (like myself) and vegans. If you find yourself in Portland and need to have some brunch, do yourself a favor and stop here.

Cool Little Spot

By ashley16nicole |

Cute little spot to grab breakfast or lunch. Found it by just Google-ing breakfast in Portland. Staff isn't overly nice but they are super rude either. Has a very cool atmosphere and a pretty extensive coffee bar. Breakfast was solid and simple, very good flavors. Price was great too! Only complaint is that the area in the far end of the building where we were seated has bad acoustics and it gets VERY loud when busy, making it hard to have a conversation.

Brunch Spot

By Va9nessa |

This is a great breakfast and brunch spot especially because they serve breakfast all day for eggs benedict fans like me! The staff is friendly and attentive. My bacon came out a little to underdone for me and they immediately fixed it. The chef was nice enough to recreate my meal even though it wasn't necessary! Great place and highly recommended!

Favorite everyday breakfast spot

By Shelby S |

If I'm in the mood for some good breakfast and don't feel like cooking, I head down to Genie's. I love their eggs Benedict, they alway have a specials menu on the weekend too! I once ordered their eggs Benedict special, fried chicken, bacon on a biscuit with a poached egg and hollandaise! Completely over the top but delicious none the less. Their bloody Mary's are great too, they infuse all their vodka and have many options to choose from to jazz it up. My favorite is the bacon, jalapeño Bloody Mary, delish!

Great Place for Breakfast

Everything is delicious and the service is great! Great specialty cocktails, yummy scrambles, delicious pancakes. YUM. YUM. YUM.

Unique

By Robert P |

Ate here on our way to the airport to go home so was sad to be leaving oregon. Food was great and the staff were friendly. We were there for breakfast and the one thing that kept catching my eye was the sign for a drink that comes with a real scorpion, kinda sad I did not have the chance to get it.

No more visits

By Beth P |

I've tried and tried but it's over. The last three times (in a row) we've been to Genies our orders have been totally wrong, taken forever to come out, or cold. I watched my eggs Benedict sit under the warming light for 10 full mins before it was delivered. The english muffin wasn't toasted and the hollandaise sauce was luke warm. The whole plate was nearly inedible but it had taken so long to come out and I was so, so hungry at this point, I did my best to eat something. On one previous visit, my coworkers chicken sandwich was raw. Seriously. I keep wanting to have a good experience here and it hasn't happened. So no more, Genies.

Yummy breakfast in funky decor

Great local breakfast spot. Lots of options for vegetarians and carnivores alike. Excellent coffee and lots of interesting combinations. Make sure to check the daily specials.

Grrrrreat!

By pennymasae |

We were heading to a much touted rival breakfast cafe in Portland and fortunately....it was closed. Disappointed, we turned around and drove back along Division and - voila! Up popped Genie's. We went in and were delighted. Delighted with the welcome, the servers, the service, and of course the food. Had one of the scrambles and it was huge. Heavy with everything and had to take half of my portion home. Husband gobbled his down. Good coffee - our personal mark of a decent breakfast place. I would make a wee criticism here. Loved the potatoes - flavorful and crispy, but waaay too big a serving. Cut down the spuds by half. Or have "lady's" or half portions... However, bottom line - great find.

Great breakfast. Long wait.

Best Country Fried Steak EVER!

By sharrongeg |

On a whim, we decided to try this restaurant. My tummy was totally thrilled! While we both enjoyed fabulous cappuccinos, hubby opted for traditional eggs/sausage while I ordered the chicken fried steak. Best chicken fried steak I have ever had. Very slim breading on a delicious, medium rare steak. I was in heaven. Service was quick and friendly, atmosphere bright and welcoming. Highly recommend!

Very interesting menu. And laid back family atmosphere

By Allan S |

They have some unusual dishes and are very family friendly. Service was very. Relaxed so go here fir nice calm spot. They make nice omelets and well done potatoes. Gets busy later in day on weekends so guide yourself. Accordingly. Very open spot and in a classic area in tiwn

Good Food and Service

By Dan W |

I met a friend for breakfast at Genies based on the reviews and its overall good reputation. We both had eggs Benedict which was good, not great. The eggs were over cooked. The accompanying potatoes were very good and I liked that my tea was brewed an in a very large cup. Very nice service. Difficult to find parking BTW.

Solid Breakfast, good value

I was on my way to a different restaurant for breakfast but encountered a line out the door and around the block, so switched plans and headed to Genie's. I'm not a fan of waiting in line. Breakfast was good at Genie's, although not at the level of "best breakfast ever." I will say that there were some diners around me who seemed extremely pleased with what they had-the person at the next table was eating a hash that he could not stop talking about. The service was good and very friendly. The restaurant was clean and spacious. I ordered biscuits and gravy with 2 eggs and a side of ham. The ham was a bit on the dry side. The biscuits were good although not excellent. The sausage gravy was a little sweet for my tastes (I like a peppery sausage gravy) but I have to give them credit for giving it some flavor with the use of herbs. It wasn't just flour and milk with sausage chunks, which is all too typical. My partner had a basic breakfast with bacon, eggs and toast. The bacon was quite good. Of course I sampled it because bacon. The coffee was good and the friendly staff kept it filled for me. I don't know if I would say that this is a "destination" breakfast spot, but if I were in the neighborhood again I'd probably go back. I'd definitely try lunch or dinner there, I have a feeling based on the specials that were still on the board from the night before that it's pretty good. I'd HIGHLY recommend this as a group breakfast spot, especially during the week.

Genies Cafe serves a great breakfast

Set in an old Portland building, Genies Café is very crowded and noisy. They carter to the locals, and serve a great breakfast. It was packed with young people and their families .They serve alcoholic drinks and several choices of coffee with a very varied breakfast menu. We would return.

Very happy breakfast!

This cafe was recommended by a local, and we were glad we didn't miss the chance for a special breakfast. I had a delicious breakfast sandwich of my own design, and a great adult beverage to go with it. Prices were surprisingly reasonable...seemed to be a very popular place, but even busy the service was great.

I love breakfast!!!!

I love going out for breakfast more than any other meal. Genie's is one of my favorite spots for that first meal of the day. The vegetarian tofu scrambles are consistently delicious. The coffee is strong and smooth. The wait staff is always busy but never too busy to be super nice and friendly. Genie's serves alcohol, even at breakfast, if you are looking for that. For a genuine Portland breakfast experience, look no farther. Genie's is the spot. Oh, be prepared to wait on the weekend, as it is a very popular breakfast destination for all.

Super Good Breakfast

I hate waiting to eat, no matter how good the promise is. But after sitting outside in the sunshine with friends and having a Mojito-ish cocktail before a table was available, it was worth it. So worth it. The place is loud with the chatter of locals getting together the Morning After, and everyone is active and smiling. Hipster wait staff are on point, there when you need them, not when you don't. I had an omelette that was amazingly good and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Can't say anything more other than I'll be happy to wait for breakfast there again on our next visit to PDX.

Large plate breakfasts

Recommended by chef at restarant...wife and I went over at 10:30 am on Sunday, grabbed a cup of coffee and tea at bar (and prevented bar server from taking a $1.75 tip on my $3.25 beverage tab) and waited only 20 minutes for table. Quick service, bisquits/gravy good, O'brien potatoes dry, tasteless. Wife asked for poached eggs got fried eggs. He country fried steak good. Large portions. Easy street parking nearby. Low priced Bloody Mary's.

Always good food!

I lived 10 years in Portland, and this was my local breakfast spot. I miss it horribly. When I visit, I enjoy all my breakfasts here. Yes, I could go all over "foodie" Portland to try different breakfasts. However, this was my place when I lived in Southeast. The food is great! Huge portions, great bloody mary concoctions and a staff that may seem apathetic, but is really attentive, nice and efficient. I have never had a bad meal, and being gone for five years, it is a treat to have the amazing consistency that I remember from my days of residency. Go there! It is delicious!
