Good burgers in Va-Hi

By Jim W. |

We took two nieces and one of their husbands here for a lunch on a Saturday. Parking was mildly challenging, but that is more due to the Va-Hi area than to George's. There is a pay lot just down the street beyond the woodworking place, or you could probably park further away in the neighborhoods. Our first choice was whether to eat inside or on the patio adjoining the sidewalk. The inside seemed overly dark (dim lighting and dark wood) plus they didn't seem to have more than one table the could easily accommodate more than 4 people. The patio was brighter, the table-arrangement was flexible, and you could people-watch. We opted for the patio. Service was a bit slow at first, but I think they were just ramping up for lunch. Once we got connected with our waitress, things ran smoothly. Everyone ordered a burger of some sort, and we didn't have to wait overly long. We had come at one niece's request for the burgers, and no one was disappointed. George's burger is among the better that I've had lately. It is sized well and they have a fair variety on the menu. Different people in our party got different sides so we shared those also; the fries and tots were both good. If you're in the Va-Hi area and want some bar-food, George's is a good option.

One of our favorites.

We love the burgers. This place haas been around for years, making the grill perfectly seasoned.

Great spot for a burger and a beer!

By Jarrad K |

Been here plenty of times. Great location in the highlands and it's just a good spot to sit down and have a burger and a beer with a friend at the bar. Also a good spot for a group. The burger is one of the better ones in Atlanta for sure.

Good food and service

By julio6925 |

This was a nice place with friendly service. The burgers were good as was the popcorn shrimp my son had. The chocolate cake was just OK but the ice cream was good that came with the cake. I would go back as it is a nice easy place to hang out and eat.

Follow the Natives to George's

By Trey S |

Virginia Highlands is full of great restaurants. So how does one succeed? George's has done it for years by doing the 'simple'...really well. A cozy neighborhood bar with a great location, a street-side veranda for when the weather is nice, a friendly staff, and good food! George's is known for their burgers, but WAIT!...I recently got turned on to George's Chili!....and I even had a Jalapeno Margarita that was down right tasty! George's has become one of my favorite Highland stop-overs. Be prepared to use a parking meter or park your car a block or two away...but you would have to do that for any other place in the Highlands anyway, so no big deal. Mostly George's is about consistency; good food and good service all the time.

Great Local Place with Fun Atmosphere

By mumzie1039 |

This was our second visit and liked it very much. It is a family friendly place, and a child's birthday party was being held there that evening. We had a group of 7 people and our waiter did a great job of getting us our orders accurately and in a timely manner. There is an outdoor patio that faces a Main Street and provides a fun atmosphere. We had appetizers of nacho chips and hummus and pita bread. These could have had more flavor. I would not order those 2 again. The entrees we ordered were delicious and served hot. We had burgers, fries, wrap sandwiches and chicken fingers, and everyone liked their food. Our adult beverages were a good strength, not watered down.We had a great evening.

Get the tater tots

By Esthete2 |

My husband and I eat here every time we visit Atlanta. We love the burgers, fries, and especially the tater tots. We tend to meet with friends there. It's a great place to relax and hang out.

Thank You Courtney

Was able to reunite with some great friends! George's: I always come for your lamb burgers. And I won't lie we had to leave the Vortex and come to you because they took their Turkey Burger off the menu. Courtney we appreciate your jovial attitude and review of weekend College Football stats. #RollTide

Fun Spot-One of the best burgers ever.

By Rob from Atlanta |

We have a great time every time we go to George's. They have a lot of toppings for the burgers that make the meal more than "just a hamburger." I think the place is cheap and a great value. Apparently a lot of other people agree.

Back Again!

By lhptraveler |

I was in town visiting my daughter and had to have my "George's" fix! It was delicious once again and a relaxing place to have an outstanding burger. Wish I could eat here more and try some of the other items on the menu but that jalapeno burger calls my name every time! Very clean for as old as it is but the bathrooms are a challenge!

Just thinking about their lemon pepper burger is making my mouth water!

Best Burger

By mattieb689 |

Best burger I have eaten in a very long time. They will cook it to your liking, medium for me. For me this hard to find, most want to cook it well done. Robbing all the flavorful deliciousness from the burger. Get the tater tots. Simple, but delicious.

Best Burger in The Highlands

Great service and fair prices. Skip the fads and go with "est 1961" for the best bite. Simple menu and easy on the wallet. George's!

Great Place to Stop in Virginia Highlands!

By Larry S |

This spot is like a small New England bar. For such a little spot, it has a very complete menu. Great place for watching football games. TV's are everywhere. I'll be back!!!

Neat little local bar

By dmcguir1 |

It's nothing fancy, but sometimes that's exactly what you're looking for in a bar. It's been an Atlanta staple die decades, and there's a lot of history inside. The beers are cold and cheap, and the burgers and tots are tasty. If you're looking for a no frills good time, it's here.

It is true, the best burger in Atlanta!!!!!

By Edward O |

this was a venue pre-arranged as we were having our relatives wedding the next day, we arrived at this restuarant and greeted with a warm smile and shown to the the table aready sitting some of our relations. Anyway back to George's, the food is outstanding it is a very base menu and for good reason they specialize in Burgers but also cater to vegetarians. the staff are very attentive and real friendly, the only set back is if you want to visit here parking is difficult but this place is well worth the hassle. I do a lot of traveling and try burgers pretty much world wide and this by far the best I have ever tasted.

By buzzinaround |

It's dark & dive-y but the staff are always friendly and burgers are tasty. Hard to decide between tater tots & onion rings

Really Good Almost Cheap Eats

By Benspapa1 |

This is a terrific neighborhood bar and restaurant. Good hamburgers, big tasty sandwiches, great onion rings and fries plus nice people, lots of televisions for sports, tons of beer choices and a comfortable old time atmosphere make this a definite "go to". Try it. You'll go back.

Our Favorite Local Place!

By Janice D |

Great burgers and great, coutrteous service. This is our "go to" place for a great, home cooked meal in a "cheers" local environment. Same great wait staff and reliable food for years....a hidden gem in Virginia Highland!!

Cheap beer and wings

By Nikhil D |

This place is the definition of a dive bar, but it was exactly what we were looking for. The beer was cheap and good and the wings were surprisingly delicious. Will definitely come back!

All around good burger

By AtlantaGirl_79 |

I had the bleu burger with mushroom and bacon. nicely cooked and tasty. Do get the onion rings....really good!

Excellent Burgers

By BurtonMartin |

Last time I went bad service, hopefully it will be corrected as I have been loyal customer for over 25 years!!!

What happened?

By nivek451 |

Maybe I caught them at a bad time. I've been here before and recall liking it, aside from the fear of parking- they will boot you in a heartbeat or worse yet, tow! I was excited to get a burger and tots and a coke. The waitress was nice, the place was just opening and there was no crowd. So why was my burger so bland? No flavor and I'm not one to pass on eating a piece of charred meat.....this just missed on all accounts.

A Virginia Highlands Classic

By Chart30308 |

I have been a customer of Georges for over 25 years, back when George actually ran the place. Back then, it really was a neighborhood bar, where you would see heighborhood characters come in at the same time every day and order the same meal...George actually got me to try a Liverworst and Onion sandwich, which was shockingly very good. Well George has long passed and his son Georgie runs the place now. And like many of the restaurants in the area, George's has gone through a lot of updating. George's is known as one of the best Burger Joints in Atlata for years, with perfectly seasoned and cooked to your specific temperature. I have two favorite burgers, the chili burger and the black and blue burger. Always order the onion rings either as an appitizer or with your meals. George's menu has expanded over the years to accomodate the upscale diners expectations, with fresh salads and meat alternative burgers, etc. There is a reasonable beer and wine selection.... George's is two doors down from another burger joint, Moe and Joe's, and right next door to Highland Hardware, where after your meal, you can go and finally pickup that wood working tool you have been meaning to buy for six months! Give George's a try. . Georgie will not disappoint you..

Great Burgers!

By joyoftraveling611 |

Always an incredible burger and fries, and if you're really hungry, be sure to order the onion rings. This is a comfortable neighborhood joint with reliable "barfood" that never disappoints! After pigging out, you can walk off some of the calories in the trendy Virginia Highland area.

Perfect spot for a casual late lunch (linner)

By catwomanAtlanta |

There were 8 of us on Sunday afternoon - Serena took amazing care of us! Had wings, hummus, salads, burgers, chili and beer! Everything was very tasty! Our burger picks ranged from black bean to beef to lamb! Everyone was pleased!! Great local place no surprise that it has been around for a long time!

Friendly neighborhood burger joint

By Billy S |

The burgers are great, the staff is friendly, the beer selection is pretty good. They have lots of tvs and some outdoor seating. This is the kind of place where you go and everyone knows your name. George's will always be one of our favorites.

Best burger in ATL.... Get it medium rare and accompany with onion rings with Ranch dressing.

Nice Vibe on the Patio

By GuyFromAtlanta_GA |

After shopping or walking around the Highlands come here to chill, watch sports on TV or just people watch. Today we enjoyed drink specials ($5 bloody mary or mimosa) after walking the Tour of Homes.

Try Trivia Tuesdays

By jmaxwellb |

George's is hopping on Tuesday evenings at 8 for trivia. Many teams have played there for years and there's plenty of faux grudge match repartee for the initiated. Nice mix of ages and backgrounds. Mushroom Swiss Burgers are tasty. Chocolate cake is surprisingly fabulous. Sierra Nevada and Bass available. Check out the new bathrooms!

Best cheap burger in the Highlands

By Buttsman |

Great place to sit on the patio, have a good burger and a beer. No, it's not a gourmet burger.. but they do have tater tots (a friend calls them God's favorite) We go regularly. Super local hangout.

Fun ambience, good service, and great food

By Reba100 |

We met friends here for dinner. The place was crowded, but we were still able to talk easily. Our server was very attentive and kept our drinks refilled without our having to ask. The burgers were truly exceptional. Having a choice of size burger was nice - the 5 oz. was perfect for me, while my husband enjoyed the larger 8 oz. size. The onion rings were nothing special, but the fries came out hot and tasty. I would definitely go back.

A neighborhood classic!

By Mike V |

George's is the place neighbors bring their out-of-town friends and family to experience the "scene" of the Virginia-Highland neighborhood. Run by the second generation of the family who has operated it since the early 1960s, George's is a burger-chicken-sandwich type of place. They expanded a couple of years ago, adding to the large outdoor patio, which is the best people-watching viewpoint in the neighborhood. The expansion also allowed them to add new modern restrooms, replacing what had to be the worst anywhere! This is a HUGE local favorite. George's was also featured in the 2012 Clint Eastwood movie "Trouble With The Curve." Grab a burger (my favorite is the Patty Melt - done perfectly on tasty rye bread with grilled onions done oh-so-right) a cold brew and people watch. There are tables large enough for 8-10-12, so it becomes a a place where locals bring visiting extended family. You'll always find a couple of dogs hitched to the patio railing, and the wait staff quickly brings water for them. The servers have been there for years, and know the locals and their regular orders. If you're looking to grab a burger and beer where the locals go in Va-Hi, make it Georges!

Great burgers at great prices

By Losmanq |

There are more expensive and fancier burger places in the ATL but Georges is an institution. Great burgers and super friendly service all for a low price. Can't beat it.

Maybe popular but also mediocre

By Breathdoc |

Had the Ruben, which was thin, with little corned beef, and tough. My colleague had a Black Bean Burger which he could not eat. They wer gracious and didn't charge him and gave him a cheese burger. Suspect a one shot visit is in fairness not adequate to judge....BUT.....

Neighborhood burger joint

By mtsyman |

George's is one of the oldest bars in Virginia Highlands but remember not very many places are old in Atlanta. George's is known for their burgers and they have several sizes of burgers. They taste like a homemade grilled burger. George's is also a Runners hangout so the majority of the crowd is very fit.

Best hamburger in Atlanta

By Lisaann321 |

i had a burger at George's yesterday. I have been eating here 30 years. George's has been an Atlanta institution since the 1940's. Don't know much about the rest of the menu, but they have the best burger I have had in Atlanta. It is extremely reasonable as well. Burgers come any way you want them, and several "exotic" burgers are available including vegetarian. Also, if you bring your own bun, they will make you a gluten free burger. The menu contains a large assortment of beers and wines, including a great gluten free beer. Yesterday a friend and I sat outside. It was a lovely fall day, and it was fun watching people pass. George's is also a pooch friendly stop for diners eating outside. Perfect.

Best burger in Atlanta.

By marvlatitall |

If you want a great, regular burger, fries and a frosty beer- George's is your place. In business for over fifty years, this neighborhood bar serves up great consistent food- and is known city wide for the burgers. No gimmicks, no "chipotle aioli " sauces, just a perfectly cooked to your liking burger. Period.

Love, love, love this place!

By j g |

OK, OK.... Yes, it has wood walls, is sort of set up galley style, but man oh man do they have great veggie burgers and the hummus is to die for! If I lived in the Virginia Highlands this would be my home away from home. Even my teenage kids love this place. Have been to several times and will definitely be going back.

Absolutely spot on.

By Kirsty Georgina |

Only had an ice cream and a few drinks amongst friends. The service is fantastic, friendly and such a lovely atmosphere! I love the little children area they have to keep the little ones occupied too which is nice. Shall be coming here more often! A lovely cosy restaurant!

Best burger in town

By Tom B |

George's burgers and Rubens are out of this world good. Good quality food with a VaHi atmosphere. Nothing better than a great buyer and good beer.

The best burger ever!

By FinallyFlying |

George's is a great neighborhood pub with the best hamburgers I have ever had anywhere. My sister-in-law loves the reuben but I have not yet tried it.....burgers are too good for me to order anything else....except the chili which is awesome! Great covered patio area for warmer weather, but a very nice bar area too. Great service, great prices!

Solid neighborhood pub... the "Go-To"

By Michael K |

If you're simply looking for a good meal out and cozy Cheers-like environment, that generally has space for you, go to George's. We always call it the "go-to" for when we strike out on other options. George's is solid food for the price, great spot to take kids (they have a side room where they usually put families away from the bar) and a good bar area for folks like me who like a beer and a few TVs to keep up with sporting events. It's your local hole in the wall sports bar.

Good food & people watching

By StevenHScher |

This Virginia Highland's establishment is basically a bar. The menu is very nice. I had a rueben, it was good but not fantastic. The tater tots that came with it though were fantastic. The burgers were good, the black bean burger was great. The hot dogs for the kids was perfect. We sat outside & tied the dogs outside the fence. It was a beautiful day to sit outside. The service was perfect. Great local establishment.

Good Hamburgers

By JnS41 |

Visited the Highlands area for the first time which is packed with interesting restaurants. George's is an old bar and restaurant, nothing fancy here, but good service and hamburgers. The hamburgers smelled and tasted right off a charcoal grill. Will be back.

For hanging out in the Virginia Highlands area and watching people, this place can't be beat. The food remains good quality.

Great local bar

By Atlmom2015 |

George's has the coldest draft beer in town. The burgers are good too. I like the turkey burger, my husband enjoys all the beef burgers. Kids like the vegetarian patty melt. The blackened mahi-mahi sandwich is also a good choice. They now have a full bar and the spicy bloody mary is tasty.

By Dham5254 |

Been here multiple times as it is my go to burger spot. Plenty of options and plenty of food when it gets to you. Any place that has tater tots gets a bump in my book. Their wings are good as well. Good beer options too. Hard to beat this place!

Great Burgers!

By Wendy Infelise |

We went to George's while visting friends in Atlanta. I had a bacon cheeseburger and tater tots. Delicious! It was cooked perfectly and was fantastic. It's the kind of burger you crave, but rarely find. Another note-they also use shaved ice in the Coke! Love it!

Comfortable and reliable...family run forever!

By Jill_ATL57 |

Have been going to George's where everybody knows your name...or soon will. That kind of comfort. Regulars and visitors are know they are going to get treated like you are at home. Food is fine. Served fast. Priced right. Beer and Wine only...well there is sweet tea on crushed ice... Runners are here on Wednesday's...Trivia on Tuesdays. When it is all going crazy...George's calms it down. The Rolling Rock's are always the coldest, because that was George's favorite beer!

Very Good Hamburger, Cold Beer

By 87vette |

In Virginia-Highlands Area. Very Good Hamburger, sides are not house made (so-so), great old Bar atmosphere. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, attentive. Extremely large selection of Hamburgers and Beer. Parking is ok, may have to park in neighborhood nearby. Outside Dinning tables.

a light lunch snack or dinner.

What a nice place to go and have a good burger or the best Reuben sandwich with tater tots and see the latest sports on TV. the service is always great!

Something for everyone. Good wings, good burgers, good chili, good kids meal even though a bit large for a 5 and 2 year old. Cold beer. Good service. I’d recommend.

Solid burger

By Keith S |

I had the bacon cheese and it was very good. My wife got the blackened Maui sandwich and she really enjoyed it as well. A cool little place and it is quite reasonable on price.

Great Burger and Mickey Mantle ate there!

By Brooksie W |

Went with a group of friends for lunch. The burger was excellent and my friend commented on the slaw and how fresh it was. Another friend loved the pickle. The table had name plates with the names of baseball stars and I sat at Mickey Mantle!! Apparently many sports stars have eaten there over the years. This was a low key, friendly place and I will surely go again!

Deonna is AMAZING!!

By Irish C |

Deonna took care of us and did an outstanding job for such a big party. Such a professional, and great with my family. Elida and James the supervisor are such jewels to the establishment. They were most attentive and kind and my party asked for nothing. I appreciate the restaurant and the impecable service they provide.

Best Neighborhood Bar/Restaurant in Atlanta

By R.. |

I've been going to George's for years when in Atlanta and it's about time I wrote a review. George's is everything you would want in a neighborhood bar/restaurant. Friendly people, comfortable environment, good food, good selection of beers. Very simple and straightforward menu -- nothing fancy. The burger is the best in the city, certainly better than what you find at many of those more expensive specialty burger places. Overall a great value. I no longer live in Atlanta and this is one of the places I miss. I always go back when I'm visiting the city.

You just can't beat a George's burger and a pitcher of High Life.

Only OK

By lawyerdaggett |

Basically, this is a neighborhood bar with wooden walls and ceilings. Their main menu item is hamburgers and they are reasonable, but not really memorable. The salmon salad had an ample portion of fresh salmon, but the salad greens weren't cold (in fact, they were room temperature). Service was good, but I doubt I will go back. It just wasn't that great. By the way, it was packed with young couples with babies and toddlers. Kind of surprising for a place that really looks more like a bar than a restaurant.

Great place to Eat and be Merry!!

By Jamie and Tim H |

Located in Historic Atlanta, this little Gem offer amazing food, cold beverages and a come as you are feel. Place is very popular and one may have to wait to be seated during peak times. Great Burgers, Fries and Tots...all cooked to perfection, I've heard good things about the salad and other grub as well. Parking is limited, you will have to walk a little from public parking areas but not far. Definitely a place to try if you are in the area.

Great burger

By Daniel M |

I had never been there before so I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a burger and fries. The burger was a 1/4 pound and it was good! It had bacon, cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. The service was excellent. The waiter came back to my table numerous times to check on me.
