My husband ate here alone for lunch one day, and we both ate there another while we were visiting Portland. The second day we got there right as they opened (the owner had overslept because he was there late watching his restaurant during the election riots the night before). The food was fresh and delicious. The portions are a bit small, and you have to pay extra for the naan. But we left satisfied.

We visited our favoured Indian restaurant on Valentines day at around 20.00 after a period that we were away.we were shocked to find the difference in atmospher and quality of service not to mention the quality of food that was well below par. We started to visit this restaurant over 20 years ago when Ashok(RIP)was the proud owner, full of enthusiasm and energy, which made the Ghandi the talk of the town and build a reputation that only few Indian restaurants could come even close to his,but since he past away things were ok after a while but soon after it begun a downwards slide in terms of service and the quality of food. On the night we were there there was only one waiter which lucks personality and hardly talks to you, never mind that not even a smile you could see on his face, the only impresión that I had about him that he was very proud of his Salvadorian mustache.soon it become apparent that he couldn't cope with 3 tables whereby there were 2 or 3 coustomers.people were left to wait for their orders to come out quit a while.my wife ordered a simple vegetable biryani and extremely mild sauce and I ordered onion bargie as a starter and a mixed grill of chicken and lamb.my wife's sauce contained some spices but the vegetable biryani contained not enough vegetables.my onion bargies were inedible, dry and well overcooked,I did ask to replace one of the bargies which was just the same so I didn't bather to ask again. My chicken was dry and overcooked too.lamb was hard to chew too.. I asked to take it away thinking I could eat it at home by grilling the chicken and the lamb once more, but the results were the same. In all we were extremely disappointed of this expirience and come to the conclusion that there is no more pride and care once the owners are not there.this place can be a money spinner if handled correctly by the right people. Hopefully it can improve once more but my confidence that this will happen is not great and it's a BIG SHAME!! your sincerely David and Sharon Ronnen PS Hope to get a reply from the owners following my review.

We got a delicious meal for an inexpensive price. I got the four choices with rice and bread, and chose four vegetarian things. They were all really tasty, though there was one with red sauce that was really HOT. There was so much food that I couldn’t finish it, and it kept me so full I skipped dinner.

Had a lovely meal here. Raj is a credit to the team!! Amazing waiter nothing was too much for him. Great place . Thank you

Mmm, the pakora. Delicious. It was Saturday evening, and it was the only Indian place open (not a food cart). Lucky us. We often try Indian food, in part because of flavor, in part because we are vegetarian (mostly) so Gandhi it was. We usually order the pakora, so we did here, and it was great (we ordered the spinach). For the meal, I got Navaratan Korma (I often get Korma) which was new to me, but nice and flavorful. I asked for medium spice, and it was a bit low, but I was so enamored with the pakora that I was not bothered. My partner got the Palak Paneer, a staple for her. It was good, but not outstanding. Overall, it was a good meal, and rather inexpensive for the quality of food and the location of the restaurant. Recommended with enthusiasm

I have been eating here for years and the food is consistently fantastic! Don't be scared off by the long line, it goes quick. The two guys who work there are efficient and always friendly. This is one of my favorite lunchtime spots. The portions are generous and food is delicious.

If you’re looking for a top notch Indian cuisine you’ve come to the right place, everything about it was top notch including the service. Lamb madras was an excellent spice which got the blood pumping. Can confirm will go again. EH2

This has to be the worst Indian food I've ever had! I am not sure why the saag paneer had a tomato base, but they almost ruined my favorite dish for me. Also, if you fry rice, its fried rice, not biryani. I am honestly surprised this restaurant in downtown Portland is still open.

Love the Korma.... Ghandies is my favorite place to eat!1 The people there are the best and I love the owner he is awesome!!! Come and enjoy some yummy food...

Gandhi offers a lunch-line type buffet with the Indian standards including tandoori style spicy as well as mild chicken, Lamb, shrimp and vegetarian. I enjoyed the spicy chicken along with rice, naan and some vegetables. With a soda, $11.

I went to Gandhi restaurant with some colleagues for dinner. The restaurant is modest but clean. The menu is not the largest Indian menu I have seen but it had the basics - samosas, curries, vindaloos, Briyanis and naan. I ordered the lamb vindaloo medium spice level and raita. The lamb was tender and served in a rich vindaloo gravy which was well spiced - enough of a kick to wake me up and clear my sinuses but not so spicy that it was unpleasant to eat. The service was very friendly and the prices reasonable - most entrees are $14-$16 and are served with more than enough basmati rice. Unsurprisingly, there are not many options for the wine lover. The entire bill for 5 of us was $102.

Oh my God! Every single tastebud on my tongue was screaming out in joy! I’ve never had Indian food before and I have to tell you, I’m so glad my first time was here at Gandhi. The portions are huge and the service is great. I highly recommend the Lamb Tikka Masala and the Tandori chicken. Hands down, some of the best tasting food I’ve had in my life. If you walk past here and don’t stop to eat, I’ll keep you in my prayers. Sooooooo Good!!!!!

This used to be a very popular food cart and they have successfully transferred the concept to a restaurant. It's a hybrid really. You walk in and stand in a very fast line, get to a counter to be served, pay, and there's a good-sized seating area. The food is very good and they have room here for more options than they had when they were a food cart - particularly good if you want to make sure there are mild, medium, and spicy options. They have several combo options including vegetarian. The mango lassi is yummy. It's a lot of food, so you can easily have leftovers and that makes it an even better value. I usually meet colleagues when I get there and almost daily see take out containers with leftovers in the office fridge.

Had a pleasant experience here. The food was all good, good portions, good quality, good flavor, and the staff was friendly. The price is typical of Indian food. I have had great Indian food and bad Indian food and this was good. Would eat here again and would recommend to others.

The ambiance fairly stark but the food, although limited, was very good. The owner was personable and helpful. Looking for Indian? I heartily recommend.

We went there at 12:45 on a Tuesday, trying to avoid the 1:00 p.m. rush, hoping the 12:00 lunch crowd was on their way out the door. The place was still packed, although there was no line! We chose one of the few booths that remained (by the door, a bit chilly), and we quickly ordered, paid and had the food back at our table. I'm a veggie, but my friend who ate with me got a chicken dish that he loved a lot. I got the four combo, and the channa masala was too bland for my taste. In fact, of the four dishes, I liked the "spicy" dish that the counter person was hesitant to give me. It was delicious! Overall, I thought the food was O.K., but nothing noteworthy. It felt a bit like an assembly line, but the guys who waited on us were nice. I'm not sure how soon I'll be back, but my friend was enthusiastic about returning soon!

The portions were small and you have to pay for Naan...Good Grief. There are better full dinner Indian Restaurants in Downtown and the 23rd avenue area. Will not go back.

I'm a picky eater and there are more foods I dislike than I like but Gandhi's vindaloo chicken is something I really like. Great value . I always get two meals out of one purchase. You get a lot of food for your money. Service is quick which is good because there is always a line.

It seemed like some items were delicious and then others were not up to par. I love naan but this particular restaurant obviously uses a different recipe! It was tasteless.

Gandhi's Indian Restaurant is situated in downtown Portland, Oregon on 2nd Avenue. It is a quick service restaurant serving vegetarian and non vegetarian Indian food. The food quality is average and quantities are adequate. We tasted vegetarian combo with rice, rotis and two vegetables, [vegetable korma and chole].The quantity of rice was too much, we would have appreciated one more roti in place of half the quantity of rice. The restaurant has a large sitting area and is in prime downtown locality. What was a bit of a cultural shock was presence of a bar inside the restaurant displaying a wide variety of alcoholic beverages and a photo frame of Mahatma Gandhi exactly at the centre of this display.I have not come across a case of more inappropriate branding in my life. I was very hungry after long hours of sight seeing and entered the restaurant anticipating tasty Gujarathi vegetarian food. However, for a non Indian or a thick skinned Indian looking for a quick bite of authentic Indian food at a moderate price, keeping aside the sensitive issue of availability of alcohol in a place named Gandhi, the restaurant could be a right choice.

There was a food cart I tried, it was better chaat served there. This seem like a hype more then reality

The food is so very very good. Nothing fancy, there is a tiny eating area, most folks get the takeout. I have tried it all, and there is nothing to complain about, its just delicious, and huge servings, its two meals for me.

Went here as we were craving for Indian food after a week of travel , only to be sorely disappointed . The plates and glasses that were laced in front of our party had food marks in them and we asked for them to be replaced . That seemed to really irritate our hostess Who then barely paid us attention despite the fact that we were the only party there . Now to the foods . Paneer pakoras were ok but the rest of the food was terrible . Have had better butter chicken in food courts . The hostess did not even ask us if we liked the food despite seeing that we left most of it untouched . If you like Indian food just avoid this place .

I had the chicken curry. It was a nice sauce, but the chicken was dry. The service was friendly and accommodating.

I have been enjoying Gandhi's since it was a food stall as a quick satisfying meal for lunch. I have been wanting to try dinner and finally did. I am a huge fan of potato samosa's and was very excited to try them - unfortunately they were mediocre. The vegetable samosa's were the same - just very disappointing. The two entree's were good but so over heated/spiced they were very difficult to eat - even my nephew who orders Indian and Thai food "spicy" (and puts hot sauce on everything) said it was over done and could barely enjoy it. I have a feeling the entree's would have been good if I could have gotten by the over kill on the heat.

I rate this restaurant 3 stars but it's not means bad. Dishes are good, tandoori chicken is not soft but good. Curry is a bit dry but munchies Indica rice, I understand they not serve nan. I thought that more person should visit here.

They have reopened down the street from their former location. They are now at 2nd and Yamhill Street in downtown Portland. They have opened as a full service restaurant and they are open for dinner at 5 pm. Once again the lines are down the street at lunch. I went the evening of their grand opening. Not only did they meet my expectations, but surpassed it. The food was even better, fresh and delicious. They are still working out a few kinks but I expect as word spreads they will be packed for dinner as well. If you love Indian food--run, don't walk to eat this incredible food. The ONLY place I feel they could use a little work on was their chai, it was a little watery and lacked enough spices.

For me, the restaurant is average. The food is ok - not bad but not great either. I thought it was a little expensive. Granted, like I said the food isn't bad but I guess I expected a bit more for a $15 curry. Got samosas and pakora as starters and shared the lamb curry as our entree. Ordered fresh mango juice and while I'll give them kudos for even having fresh mango, it was way too sweet in a synthetic-not-because-of-the-mangos-natural-sweetness kind of way. Service was wonderful though.

We were starving last night after an event. Being almost 9PM we were the last table served. Wonderful coconut shrimp curry and another rather hot chicken dish with lots of cold water. Great service. Great experience. Go!

We went for dinner on a weekend night as the restaurant was close to our hotel and was well rated. The place was sparsely populated and now we know why. the food was at bast OK, the chicken was a bit rubbery and the sauce a bitr over spiced.

I waited to review until I had tried several times. Some places are inconsistent. Not here. Excellent every time. The samosas are gigantic. I love them. Be careful asking for extra spice. It is spicy on its own. I made the mistake and it felt like my lips were on fire! Oops. Naan is freshly made. Lamb is generously served and cooked perfectly. I look forward to ordering again and again.

I ordered take out on a Wednesday night. The food was ready in about 15-20 minutes and service was cordial and courteous. I had the kadai entrée and the vindaloo entrée. The kadai was not cooked all the way through so I didn't finish it. The Vindaloo was great. they came with a side of rice -which was plentiful. they provided the plates and silverware with the take out food. Very large portions.

If you want cheap, this may be fine. Tried three veggie dishes. None was good and the consistency was soupy. I hope the other selections are better because they seem to be trying hard, but something out of a packet from the grocery store is better than what I had.

This is a place where they order and scoop your food, so a great option for a quick lunch. I got the lunch special which was an entree, a veggie and bread. I got the chicken curry and the spinach and it was really delicious. In fact, all the fiid looked amazing. I will be back again soon to try more.

We found this hidden little gem while visiting Portland. We arrived and the restaurant was all but empty. Usually not a good sign however we were pleasantly surprised when our food arrived. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. Definitely would return here on a future visit.

It's not often you have good service and good food, but when you do they create a super winning combination. We were in Portland on vacation and decided to eat as diverse as possible as we are living in a small town at the moment. We finished up our marathon eating spree by hoping for the best and finding one of the closest Indian restaurants to OMSI. We were early for dinner but the owners, who were absolutely lovely, said they had only been open for a little over a month at their new location. Hint: For those that don't want to wait for dinner; stop by because there isn't a line yet. I was greeted by the Mr. and Mrs. I presume and I'm still kicking myself for not getting their names. We went lamb heavy that night by got lamb curry and lamb tika masala. And I wanted a dish that we had eaten in another state, that was kind of a spinach in a yogurt sauce. They didn't have it but this is how awesome they were. They asked for the name of the restaurant, looked up the menu item online to see if they could recreate it for me. Unfortunately they couldn't, but two thumbs up for even attempting. That goes miles in my book for customer service and that was with out me even asking for it. Instead I got a spinach dish with the cubes of cheese in it and it was everything I could have hoped for to replace my spinach hunger. Sorry, don't remember the name of it. Long story short, we feasted on delicious lamb that night, had some left overs for breakfast the next morning before heading out and couldn't be happier with what we got. I can't judge to authenticity of Indian food as I haven't been to India just yet, but this is certainly a place to put on your list of Indian restaurants when the craving hits. Super flavorful, good prices, awesome staff and people, and quick. I'm hoping the best for them and will certainly be going back and would certainly recommend the restaurant to others.

I have ate at this place more times than I can count on both hands and feet... I have also tried eating at a variety of other Indian food places none of which have came close to being as good as this place. The 5 months they have been closed due to building renovations has felt like an eternity! From what I have read they are due to open back up March or April 1st I believe. If you like Indian food do not make the mistake of leaving this little corner shop off of your list...

I am new in Exeter and I love Indian food . I only been in this town 5 days . The food was superb, atmosphere great and follow by some Indian Music . Will I come back off course . Kèmal

I love Indian food and this restaurant did not disappoint. Dinner on a Tuesday night was a breeze with really friendly and helpful service. Had the butter chicken which as plentiful and very good. Our team came back for the buffet lunch ... a good option at a decent price. Also very fast service and friendly with lots of veggie options. They also had a couple of Indian beers. Really enjoyed both meals.

Gave this place a try cuz it was the only Indian restaurant in Portland who is dining room what's still open during the pandemic Had the standby chicken tikka masala which was tasty but really uninteresting. Not much in depth of flavor and a little too salty and spicy for my taste. If I were to go back to this place I would order a mild version of this dish or any others we chose to eat. I originally went to this place because they said they had meat samosas. I was disappointed to find out they had crossed and off the menu for some reason. The onion pakoras were also rather tasty and on the salty side as they tend to be. The disappointment here was it instead of little balls of julienne onion, somebody had just hacked an onion indiscriminately and threw them on the plate. They looked more like french fries than pakoras. The real shining item here was the naan bread. They weren't particularly large but had just the perfect amount of crispy bits as well as soft chewy areas. The service was friendly and quick and I would expect you to be considering we were the only people in the restaurant at the time. I wouldn't go out of my way to get back to this restaurant but I certainly wouldn't avoid going there either. The prices aren't bad at the food's decent. I just have other places I prefer

Would not use this place again terrible service and food not worth the very long wait, attitude of staff changed after we complained and not for the better
Started as a Cart, Succeeding as a Nice Restaurant
I ate at Ghandi for YEARS when I worked downtown and the owner was in a tiny space in a food court. Now, he has a proper restaurant, and it's fabulous. Lunch is quick and easy, with food at the counter. I haven't been for dinner, but I gather there is waiter service. It's a great spot for vegetarians, and he has a very spicy tomato dish, which I've never seen anywhere else and which is delicious!
