Very good but get seated downstairs

By Roadmaster2013 |

We were seated upstairs which was nice but not as classy as downstairs. Service was outstanding. Prime rib was very good. If you are there on Friday go for the lobster bisque. Only concern was we felt rushed the bread was pulled and soup out in 10 min.

Famous for a reason!

By Lisa J |

Gibson's is a tradition in Chicago and there is a reason. The food and service are outstanding. Delicious steaks and salads and extensive wine list. It feels good and tastes good for a true steakhouse experience. Try the filet sliders and a salad for a lighter meal. Delicious!

Excellent good and service.

By Wayne H |

A friend recommended Gibson’s for the steak so that was what my wife and I had. We shared their signature 22 ounce W. R. Chicago cut steak and it was definitely the best tasting steak that I have had in recent memory. Was it the best I have ever had? Maybe. How do you compare with a meal from years ago. 22 ounces is far too much for either of us these days, but they were not only open to splitting the steak between us, our server suggested it. They brought the steak sliced into 10 strips, perfect for sharing.speaking of our server, the service was excellent. She was friendly and cheerful, but not in the in-your-face way that is too common these days. We had sautéed mushrooms and creamed spinach as sides and they were delicious, particularly the spinach. My first impression looking at the menu was that they were crazy expensive, but in the end they were not the most expensive meal of our visit to Chicago. I would definitely go again.

Family Dinner

By san |

We are regular patrons of Gibsons and have always enjoyed exceptional service and top-notch food during our visits to Chicago. However, on this particular occasion, we were somewhat disappointed by the lukewarm temperature of both the steaks and the fries. Additionally, one of the New York strips we ordered had an overly charred exterior and was undercooked inside. Despite these setbacks, the flavor of the steak remained truly delightful. While we will definitely return with our family in the future, we sincerely hope that our next experience aligns with the restaurant's usual high standards.

Racist location

By Diego C |

Do not go to the Gibsons in Chicago if you are not white. We got sat before 6 different Caucasian groups joined within a sea of white people. They took all of their orders, brought them bread, and brought them drinks until finally 25 minutes later a server heard us talking about leaving. Then finally someone went to us. After another 20 minutes, no bread, no drinks and not a single care in the world for these colored people l. Thank you for nothing, this Gibson location lost our business. We have great experiences with all of their sister locations elsewhere. This location makes me not want to go to any of these chain restaurants again.

A night to remember

By Rebecca |

Instantly loved the vibe of Gibson’s steakhouse! We arrived just after 9pm on a Tuesday, and the restaurant was bustling with a live piano player. The food was amazing (Chicago cut steak was 10/10) and our service even better. We enjoyed chatting with Carl who looked after us and made our experience! He was absolutely fantastic. Thrilled we made the decision to make a reservation at Gibson’s; it was easily our favourite dining experience in Chicago. Would recommend to anyone visiting!

Gibson’s Was Fantastic. Exceeded Expectations!

By Snake1961 |

For our first Chicago steakhouse experience, we chose Gibson’s…and we chose unbelievably well! It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. By every metric, the restaurant exceeded expectations. Every single dish was on point. We had a party of five…we ordered large…appetizers, steaks, sides and desserts…every single dish was wonderful. Every steak was perfect. That was so satisfying. The service was perfect. Friendly, attentive, professional…all appropriate terms. Everyone worked hard to insure our experience was memorable. And it was. Gibson’s spoiled us.

Common dishes done perfectly with excellent service

By Dr. Ancilleno Davis |

My visit did not start off exceptionally as I waslate to the restaurant without reservations and ended up sitting at a table in the corner just inside the entrance. Despite the inauspicious start however, attentive, knowledgeable staff quickly turned everything around. The table clearance and drinks were prompt and seemed almost choreographed. In particular, my waiter Jeff was knowledgeable about the entire menu and advised me through ordering several different sides. I had the chicken noodle soup, cocktail shrimp, Caesar salad, cream of spinach, and sautéed mushrooms with a pair of Michelob ultras. The sides can be ordered in half sizes so I recommend doing that to enjoy more flavors at a lower price. The sides were not done in any particularly innovative or unique interpretation. Instead, they were all exquisitely executed. The shrimp and mushrooms were the perfect texture and everything was delivered at the correct temperature. The cream of spinach may have been my favorite. Make sure to save a little of everything else so you can eat it with some cream of spinach.

expensive but very good steakhouse

By Reinhold P |

Been to Chicago three times and ate at this restaurant three times. You can't go without a reservation, it's always full. The restaurant is very well known. The prices are, as in other steakhouses, pretty steep, nothing under $250 for two people, and with special starters and desserts it can easily be $400. There is plenty of staff, so you are very well looked after. The steaks were as you would expect, excellent.

Correction!

By Tony I |

I just saw my original review and for some reason it only came as 3 star. That was a mistake it was definitely a 5 star experience. My original comments still stand!

Jaded

By ELynch |

Excellent food huge portions. Limited vegan range. Reception greeters felt begrudging and cold, like it was all about them not making guests feel welcome. Table service was good. All in all overall feeling was a bit fake and forced. Bar packed, restaurant not.

Don’t go here if you want a great meal!

By Lynn G |

Well, I’m not quite sure where to begin. Although I had read several recently written negative reviews for Gibsons, we decided to give it a try. I had been encouraged by a fellow Floridian, who is actually from the Chicago area to book it for dinner. And you always here about the fabulous steaks at Gibson! Well, all I can say is I truly wish I had not taken his advice. We both ordered our steaks medium. I would say they were well done around the edges and possibly medium well on the center. The outside of the steaks were beyond chard. And if I had to guess, and I’m no chef whatsoever, but I would say all of our food was cooked on too high of a temperature. What was interesting was that we did not order our food right away. But it came out less than 10 minutes after we placed our order. I personally always like to get my server’s opinions on the menu. But I also expect them to be truthful, as any great server always is truthful with their customers. So I asked about the mashed potatoes in particular. Our server described the mashed potatoes as if they were going to be the best potatoes we’d ever eaten. Unfortunately, they were far from it. They literally looked like typical mashed potatoes with a slab of Velveeta cheese melted over the top. The brussels sprouts, that we ordered that we did end up sending back, (only because the manager came over and asked us how everything was going) were burned beyond belief. And I actually prefer my brussels sprouts to be baked crispy on the edges. But these had a taste of burnt chardness, I’ve never quite experienced. To sum it all up, we had gone to Bellevue across the street for drinks prior to our dinner reservation. Afterwards, we were wishing that we had stayed for dinner. I think the thing that upsets me the most is not only the fact that the meal was horrible and that the server blatantly lied about the potatoes, but spending over $200 on a meal that was obviously cooked with only the thought of getting it out to the table as soon as possible. Evidently, the motto there must be quantity ( of the number of patrons) over quality! The focus seemed to be on getting us out, so that the next party could be seated at our table! I will never go back!

Still One Of The Best Steakhouses In Chicago

By Larry G |

Gibson's is an iconic Chicago steakhouse and still just as good or better when it opened in 1989. Now there are more than 100 steakhouses to choose from, yet Gibson's is still one of the best. This time we came for lunch and sat in the airy and open bar (you can also sit outside with amazing people watching or dine in the formal dining room). My son ordered a Grey Goose martini, extra large and served with house-stuffed giant blue cheese olives, $18. We shared their signature Garbage salad, $23 and enough for the three of us and then had the grilled flounder sandwich with house-made fries. YUM. We didn't have room for their oversized ice cream pies which looked amazing. Overall, service is top-notch, good is amazing and you can't go wrong here.

Not elegant dining but charred fast food

By Cemy61 |

Overrated... Watchout having reserved a table means nothing, you still wait upto 45 minutes for your table to be ready. Meats are too charred and too flavorless..used to be better. Shrimp cocktail is good. Salads are bad except for coleslaw. Waiters are friendly and nice but food is average...

Recalling the days when Gibson's was Mister Kelly's

By Taylor B |

Every time I go to Gibson's Bar & Steakhouse in Chicago for lunch or dinner I am reminded of the time that space at the corner of Rush Street, State Street and Cedar Street was occupied by Mister Kelly's, one of the most famous nightclubs in the country. From 1953 to 1975, it was the springboard to fame for many entertainers, including Barbra Streisand, Bob Newhart, Mort Sahl, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen and Sara Vaughn. In 1958, I celebrated my high school prom by taking my date and two other couples to Mister Kelly's. The maitre d' was very skeptical that a group of teenagers could afford the evening. I still get a smile on my face when I recall his reaction after showing him a large roll of $20 bills. In 1983, Chicago Bears football star Doug Buffone purchased the property and converted the nightclub into a trendy restaurant called Sweetwater. In 1989, Hugo Ralli and Steve Lombardo opened Gibson's. Located at 1028 North Rush Street, Gibson's has emerged as one of the finest steakhouses in a city known for steak. Open from 11 to midnight daily, with valet parking available, it features a menu that puts a smile on the face of every diner. It is a popular destination for patrons to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and other special occasions. Over the years, my wife and I have celebrated more than a few birthdays and anniversaries there. On our most recent visit, my wife started with a jumbo lump crab cake and a cobb salad. For an entree, she chose a seven-ounce filet with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. For dessert, she enjoyed a slice of chocolate mousse pie. I started with my favorite shrimp cocktail and a Caesar salad. For an entree, I opted for a 13-ounce New York strip steak with a double baked potato and sauteed mushrooms. For dessert, I couldn't resist one of my wife's favorites, strawberry shortcake. A trip to Gibson's is always an enjoyable journey down memory lane.

Great cocktails and very good steaks

By teresahughes65 |

Overall excellent dining experience and value. Manhattans and Negronis were perfectly made. The blue cheese dressing was delicious, but the salad mostly white iceberg lettuce with two grape tomatoes. WR’s Chicago Cut was very good, highly recommend that. The double baked potato was outstanding, the best I’ve ever had. The asparagus were just okay. The wine selection is excellent. Service was outstanding. Would definitely return next time I am in Chicago.

A must for lovers of real beef

By Sandcyn91 |

Perfect service , but Reservation absolutely necessary. The pieces of meat are presented raw on a large tray, at the table, in order to choose well. Be careful when cooking: the bleeding is closer to the point. Vegetables are to be added to the Award (a bit petty to add USD 10 of potatoes when a plate of meat is USD 77). The desserts are very generous, plan 1 for 2 people. Total addition over USD100, without wine. But an excellent meal,

Gibsons care more about themselves than the customer

By GREGORY F |

I have been coming to Chicago for over 15 years and always go to Gibsons when I’m in town. After tonight’s experience it will be a long time before I’m back again. Had a 7pm reservation and requested to be seated in the main dining room. They made me wait in a very crowed bar and then put us in the porch area and not the main dining room. To me the staff has lost its customer service value. They tell you how great they are and deliver less and charge more. Meal was average and to treat a repeat customer as if they don’t need/want you is a terrible feeling. Needless to say between not listening to my request, putting us in a packed bar for over 45 minutes and then not honoring my request is terrible customer service. We had to ask our waiter 2-3 times for items we requested. Food was good, not great. Service was average at best. I think Gibsons will be losing more customers as friends mentioned similar experiences. Gibsons has lost sight of no customers equals no business. It’s the beginning of the end for Gibsons.

A must visit in Chicago

By Hannah F |

We visited on Monday night. Place was packed, the service outstanding and the food was as perfect as we remembered from previous visits. Well worth every dollar. A must visit when in Chicago.

very very good

By laurent k |

This is a very good experience in Chicago. Excellent food, excellent service. Nothing to add except that we'll certainly come back with great pleasure.

Great Meal!

By CharlieinTexas |

Classic Steakhouse. A bit unorganized on arrival and seated 1/2 after our reserved time slot booked in advance. But, the vibe is comfortably noisy and the service — from professional, yet engaging old school waiters, was top notch. Nicely done! Shrimp cocktail did not disappoint. Wedge salad gets an A+, fantastic blue cheese dressing! Beef barley soup way up the chart of hearty, meat and barley-filled deliciousness! Chicago cut steak for me was perfectly cooked, with a great outer char and hot pink inside. My friend’s steak was semi-raw on the first try, but came back just fine after further cooking. Spinach and twice baked potato were tasty sides. Great meal!

Average food at above average prices.

By Jerome L |

We ordered the chicken, the ribs and an enormous carrot cake. Everything was a little dry. On receiving the hefty check my wife and I were surprised by this new trend you now find in almost all restaurants in the US where they “suggest” you leave a certain percentage as a tip. The "suggestion" begins at 18 or 20 percent and goes up to nearly 30 percent. A 15% tip is evidently no longer satisfactory. In most countries service is usually included in the price, as is tax, so the check is the sum of the prices listed on the menu. Interesting concept, right? Anyway, I asked the waiter to add 20% and he answered “no problem". This was a huge relief for me as I had feared that paying him thirty dollars for four visits to our table might have caused a problem. One last thing, what happened to serving cocktails in a cocktail glass?

My go to Steak in Chicago

By Sean D |

This was my second time here... and I would be back once a week if i lived nearby. I love this place - the service, the food... the cool factor... Chicago has a lot of good options for a steak, i will take this place every time! The service is impeccable. The steaks are cooked to perfection and the sides are prepared with your belly in mind. Great drink menu and it all just works... every time!

Gibsons Best Steaks and Location !!!

By PEZ1212 |

The Steaks at Gibsons are fantastic, Double baked potato very delicious. The drinks and wine list very good. Karl our server was very professional and entertaining.

Not worth going. We had burnt meat.

By Selman Olmez |

Unfortunately it was our last and worst dinner in Chicago. We asked for “well done” meat, but it was burnt. The french fries were also the same. Only the live piano performance inside the restaurant was very nice.

A very special place

By Tony_joyce1978 |

Outstanding food, service and atmosphere. A very special place. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Chicago

An overrated classic in Chicago

By Oscar C |

Cozy place full of the classic Chicago atmosphere where they have eaten showbiz royalty for generations, and this is demonstrated by their endless photos. Pretty good service which surprised me positively. Huge portions and well-seasoned accompaniments, although the asparagus was fibrous and somewhat tasteless. The quality of the meat I stay due (supposedly the specialty of the place), it is very well cooked, not all the cuts in the exact term I ordered but the quality of the cuts differ greatly to those that show. It seems to me that the massiveness made them lose the details in the quality in the choice of cuts they offer and that is a pity!!!

Best of the best! Legendary

By PawCane |

Absolutely outstanding dinner and service. We were greeted and seated from the bar which was a very cool vibe with piano seating. Our servers were phenomenal as was the entire meal. Ribeye was a great cut, wonderful flavor, cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. My wedge salad was excellent. Ribeye’s were the star at our table but the sea bass was as about as delicate and as perfect as it gets. Huge sides of asparagus, brussels and fries left us stuffed! The place has to be in every one’s top 3 all time if not you didn’t experience what we did. Don’t skip this place if you can get a reservation (recommended).

The best steak I have ever had in my life so far!

By carriglea |

All I am going to write about is the Chicago cut steak I had at Gibsons. I can honestly say that it was an existential experience - the best steak I have ever tasted in my lifetime - and I’ve had a lot of steaks. Our waiter was wonderful also and did everything right. - go no further.

Go someplace else for a simple meal.

By Keith H |

$22 for a cheese burger that was not cooked to medium rare like I asked, over salted and French fries that were the last little bits in the bottom of the frier is ridiculous. If you can't do a simple dish right, why would I trust that a more complicated, and expensive, one? The staff was amazing and the only reason I didn't send the food back.

Sunday night at Gibson’s piano bar! 🩷

By Evette T |

To see and be seen. Sunday nights are the best withChicago’s finest piano man, Bob Solone! Be sure to sit at the piano if you’re lucky to get a chance!

Mediocre

By DH |

This restaurant is always full pf people and our experience can be summarized as ‚quantity over quality‘. It was alright (shrimp cocktail, Caesar’s salad, filet mignon with brussel sprouts) but overall value for money is not balanced. Filet was burnt and sprouts overcooked. Service was friendly but hectic and a little tensed due to the high number of customers. Was glad when we left.

Gibsons Steakhouse, a can't miss!

By Tod R |

What can you say about a legendary steakhouse? Great as always and will come back again and again, Server Santo was excellent!

Anniversary Dinner To Remember

By Expedition579707 |

Carl as always is both an excellent waiter who has been there over 20 years but entertaining as well. Made our anniversary dinner a hit

Fantastic Steak House !! It’s a mis while visiting Chicago

The service was amazing … the food selection was just right. The meat was cook to perfection. Glad that I order the half size for the side orders. Highly recommended

Sea bass or halibut?

By gilardoni |

Lunch at the bar, we ordered baby back ribs with fries (delicious) and a grilled sea bass. Maybe our mistake as the menu didn’t have the grilled option, but what we received was resembling a slice of halibut barely cooked rather than a sea bass filet. We send it back to the kitchen, and we appreciated that not one, but two managers arrived apologizing, and even offered us a cup of shrimps on ice free of charge. Thank you. But…. The kitchen should never send out a raw (or partially cooked) fish. It potentially dangerous to your health, and a sea bass filet has a pretti distinctive shape… Certainly admitting the mistake was appreciated and it’s quite rare nowadays. Good client attention.

Reservations are a waste of time

By Trek761742 |

Every time we have a lunch reservation at this restaurant we show up and the wait is 30 minutes or are sent to the bar which is first come first serve. Why bother? They obviously just seat walkins as they arrive with no regard for those who take the time to make a reservation,

Another great Chicago mainstay!

By PrpleAce |

Great food, amazing choices of steaks and seafood, all served by a great staff - don’t miss the awesome piano in the bar area either before or after dinner !

Superb food and service...what more could you want???

By David S |

Everything they say about Gibsons is true. The food and service are both superb. It's no wonder the place was packed even on a Thursday night. I ordered a Caesar salad and Cheeseburger with a side order of creamed spinach. My waiter (Santo, who is awesome) wisely suggested half portions of the salad and spinach and could not have been more prescient. Even the half portions were huge and cost half as much. Thank you, Santo! More importantly, every single thing I ate was absolutely delicious. I would go back there in a heartbeat if I lived in Chicago and plan to visit it again when I am next in town. All I can say is that if you live in or visit downtown Chicago and haven't eaten at Gibsons, you don't know what you are missing.

Not suitable for large group booking

By Trek566357 |

Attended a group booking. Food was poor, service was fine but would not recommend a large group booking. Desserts were best part

Must do for steak lovers.

By chris n |

We were a party of 10 on a busy Monday night in January. We had the most amazing experience, the food was delicious, service was white glove and what brought it to the next level was our amazing service team led by Elvis!!!! We were in town for a hard cider convention, from New York. Elvis made sure our experience was perfection. Don’t sleep on this restaurant - or the desserts. I wish I could travel home with the macadamia bomb dessert. It’s what sweet dreams are made of. Lastly, their season salt is delicious. So happy I was able to bring some home !

Rude, unhelpful and unprofessional staff

By Daniel |

The hostess was extremely rude and unhelpful. We were told we had to wait for the whole table to arrive, which I accept. Then when they arrrived where then made to wait another 20 minutes for the table to be ready. If we were told this at the start we could have gone else where for a drink then come back. Rather than waiting in the hallway for over half an hour. The waiter was rude unhelpful and aggressive in his service. We were rushed through our meal with plates being taken away before we had finished. The meals were average at best. We were recommended this restaurant by the hotel concierge as we were entertaining guests. I have have told them that they might want to rethink this as it ruined our night. All other restaurants that we ate in were great with brilliant service. Gibson should be assumed of themselves for allowing such staff to work there

Busy place, great vibe, great food.

By Owen H |

Big, bustling bar scene with nice quiet seating both inside and out. (Sit outside if the weather is nice). Service from bartender Paul was great...very professional: always knew when I needed something but stayed away otherwise. The food was excellent with large portions. Its ala carte so plan on spending a bit. The drinks are very generous and well made for as busy as they were. Everyone working there seemed to enjoy being together.

Exceptional

By MIREILLE S |

Restaurant very famous for meat, excellent welcome, very friendly staff, meats presented for the choice, perfect cooking of the meat, accompaniments in more than reasonable quantities, what more can we say, an unmissable address in Chicago

FANTASTIC

By Kat W |

Dinner was SO good. It was my partners bday and we had a great time. Steak was amazing, wine selection was fabulous, and our server was super knowledgeable and took great care of us!!

Middle of the road

By Benjamin W |

Service was great as well as the atmosphere. Unfortunately the food did not live up. The steak was over-charred and the asparagus was bitter. For the price, it does not live up.

Vibrant place

By LikeToExploreThings |

Buzzy restaurant with nice setup. Atmosphere is noisy making it a vibrant place. Great steaks that are the best. Not cheap but worth the money. Desert for 3 is also amazing.

Gibson’s exceeded expectations.

By hjt35650 |

The food and service was exceptional. The room for our private party was spacious and well staffed. I highly recommend the ribeye.

Really disappointing experience.

By Malc501 |

We were recommended this restaurant by a friend of telative. If you read my reviews you will see I am an honest reviewer - however we were very very disappointed with the evening at Gibsons Chicago I booked the restaurant a week before and asked for a nice table please. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were told that the table wasn’t ready and asked to go to the bar on the floor below the restaurant - which we were fine with and I said no rush. Whilst I was waiting to be served at the bar downstairs - we were called to go upstairs to the table. We were sat at a table in the middle of the walkway to kitchen and the toilets, there was about an 18” or less gap between the our table and the table in front of us. At the same time there was a waiter speaking to a couple on the table behind us and I alI could hear was the waiter talking and couldn’t hear what our waiter was saying. I explained to the waiter that I wore a hearing aid and this table was not good for me and that we were in there main walkway to the kitchen/toilets and asked to be moved. He said we could go down to the bar downstairs. I said we didn’t want to go down stairs and that we had asked for a nice table in the main restaurant. I reluctantly decided to stay there. It just went from bad to worse waiters flying back and forth, with their constantly jackets brushing me and our table - it was so distracting. Whilst we were midway through our main meal the assistant general manager came and asked how was the meal. I explained that we were very disappointed with table and the experience. He apologised and could see it was not good with waiters stopping to pass each other by our table. He offered to move us but I explained that it was too late we had almost finished our main course. To be fair he moved the over a bit but that meant we were now closer to the table behind. The food was ok - my veal was little dry which I didn’t finish and the mustard sauce was so strong. The red wine was almost chilled. We we asked for the dessert menu and were presented with complimentary dessert and not given the opportunity to order a dessert from the menu. We were then presented with bill and told our dessert and the 2 glasses of wine and diet coke were complimentary. I explained to the waiter that I would review the restaurant he then seemed be avoiding us and someone else delivered the bill. As we left we assistant general manager was very apologetic and said he would love us to return and gave us his card. I explained we were on a road trip. I wasn’t looking for free drinks and a complimentary dessert I wanted a nice relaxed meal with my wife and this wasn’t a great start to our holiday. People are paying good money to eat at your restaurant and I am sure you are doing very well with a great location and atmosphere. However please take a couple of tables out as it very overcrowded. I don’t know what the fire 🔥 regs are for restaurants in the US but it was definitely tight in the main walk way.

Great experience for few ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

By Stratos A |

Everything we eat was delicious. The customer service was excellent and very friendly . It’s was very expensive but for one of the best restaurants in Chicago it worth every dollar !

Always great

By momoboys_12 |

We try to eat here when we are in Chicago. There are lots of steakhouses but Gibson’s is in a class by itself. They pay particular attention to selection and dry aging of their beef. The care taken shows on your plate. The other menu selections are spot on to what they should be. The wait staff is old school and well trained with pride in what they do. It is like a floor show either dinner.

Bang on Expectations

By Tim C |

It's busy, loud, established, art deco, and delivers the promised experience safe in the knowledge that it has been working for a great many years and tinkering with it might well break it. Really really enjoyed it. First up - you have to wait a while to get in even though you have a reservation. So there's a strange collection of folk just by the door wondering whether there's enough time to try and sneak into the very busy bar for a preprandial snifter (we did not). However, this wait is not a problem - it's some of the most interesting people watching you will ever get, plus as a foreigner you get to try and work out if you know any of the countless celebs in pictures over all the walls (very few). And to my extreme pleasure a chap came in with an out of town friend and walked straight through the crowd audibly saying "I'm a regular here and we will get a table" and he was dispatched in short order back out of the door with his tail between his legs. Perfect!! Well done Gibsons. Inside steaks are great but could be even more great. Given how busy the place is they use some mega hot oven to whip up your steak pretty much pronto, so it comes through quickly and cooked to perfection, but I would say it really was not fully rested, so it is a bit tougher than it ought to be and it does bleed. The table next to us actually sent theirs back and ordered the grass fed Australian version. However, it is simply not done to have foreign steak in the US. It does stem a bit from the USDA putting such massive stress on marbling in their quality assessment, and this means lots of corn fattening prior to slaughter. Given their market position, how hard would it be for Gibson's to put the finger on their suppliers to deliver really good end US, longer-lived, grass-fed, steak, outside of the USDA categorisation, and have that as the alternative. No problem with Aussie steak, but in an amazing steakhouse in Chicago of all places could they avoid the miles and showcase just how great different the results of US approaches to livestock can be? Chips are good, but are done in such vast quantities that they do go a little dry, they will do you a peppercorn sauce if you ask and it will be excellent. They also whisked up a dijon/english mustard mix which was right on the exact balance that I did not really know I wanted. Spinach really really good (though make sure you get the right one - the creamed version looked like a soup and I would not have been that impressed had I mistakenly ordered it). And towards the end as our minds were being tempted towards the idea of desert, we noticed massive slabs of megacake being whisked through the restaurant, obviously towards a convention of giants who had booked a private room somewhere out the back. They were manifestly comedy pieces, but no - apparently they were for real. This can, so our waiter advised, be explained by the high use of doggy bags in the States, an alien concept to the European visitor, but the size of these things needs to be seen to be believed, and as we were returning to our hotel room, rather than a small boarding school, we decided to give desert a pass. Service outstanding, and the crew operate very much as a team (including the bass delivered happy birthdays which took us a while to understand). The wait at the beginning is not because there is no space but rather so as to stagger the ordering, cooking and delivery of the food, and it works. Bloody Marys are great. Wine list is great, but with an alarming number of non-US wines (guys your own are fantastic, especially with the steak for which so many of them were designed...). Strongly recommend a visit.

A Prime Ribs Disappointment

By Fabio M |

We went to Gibsons for a special dish: Prime Rib. We ordered a 20oz medium. Prime Rib is cooked for hours as a single cut then it is sliced. When it is done right it is juicy and tender, it melts in your mouth. Our meat was so tough that we sent it back. Our Prime Rib did not looked like all the other Prime Ribs I had over and over in other restaurants. I suspect it was a Rib Eye and not a Prime Rib and it was cooked already sliced. The manager offered to change our order. We got a beef fillet and this was fine. But we went there for Prime Ribs! What a disappointment.

Last time at Gibsons

By CamillaFromCopenhagen |

Despite having made reservations, we were given a pop-up table right at entry - cold wind from the revolving door and a constant flow of other guests passing - almost bumping into our table in itself made this family celebration a poor and unsafe (many were not wearing masks) dining experience. Add to this that all our steaks and burgers were severely overcooked.

Fast, amiable, and delicious!

By Celos M |

Excellent service from beginning to end! Although I was a little late, the team managed everything flawlessly—they were prompt, kind, and always smiling. The tastes were perfect, and my meal was wonderfully cooked and delivered fresh. Here, you can see how much they value their visitors. These days, it's difficult to find both quality and service at this level. I heartily suggest it to anyone who appreciates delicious meals and friendly service!

RETURN... GREAT!

By ErMatador |

As per the title. Local visited 10 years ago and of which I had a very good memory. I have to say that once again I have the pleasure of assigning the highest grade, which I rarely do, but here they really deserve it. Two additional info: very large room divided into large and rooms on the ground floor plus many tables on the perimeter , plus a bar area and finally the rooms upstairs. Convenient Online Reservation. Very good reception, great service (punctual, precise and also friendly) The menu is quite classic (and also static) of the so-called Steakhouse level ... Personally Recommendation the Tomahawk that I remember is a very particular cut, made from the ribs of the chest. A seared meat and extremely tender, with a wild aftertaste. Here it is cooked to perfection! Valid side dishes and desserts. Final bill aligned to local prices for similar venues (I would say $70/90 plus drinking and tips) UNRESERVED Recommendation if you like the genre.

Very bad experience

By Carlos |

We left our passport in the restaurant and when we realized we had forgotten it, about 15 minutes after leaving the premises, we quickly returned and they let us go in to look for it, claiming that we would disturb the new diners at the table where we had eaten. They told us that until the place closed for the night they would not look to see if they could find it. The next morning we had to catch a plane back and we had to obtain a new passport at the Consulate.

Lunch Pre delivers, a top meal that is served, where most of the dishes are very generous, exquisite

By Giovanni Jiménez C |

I love the place, the Atmosphere, food and location, excellent service, they have very good local beers and a variety of dishes

Always amazing

By Vacation-Advocates |

The steaks are always cooked to perfection. The service is always impeccable, side dishes, tasty, and the desserts, enormous. We have been coming here for years and will continue.

Fantastic experience and excellent meal.

By Larry C |

I cannot begin to describe how much we (2 couples) enjoyed our visit to Gibson’s. The inside is a classic big city steakhouse with tons of staff in white jackets. Our server was amazing, describing all the meat choices and options for sharing the larger items. Our meals came out cooked perfectly with very generous portions. After the meal the server surprised us with a complimentary desert to share (one of the couples celebrating wedding anniversary). A perfect meal in every way.

Superb steak

By BJM |

Everything about this experience was 5 star. The service was fantastic, great ambience and most importantly fantastic steak cooked to perfection. A great dining experience.

Terrible food experience

By Pioneer54973784078 |

I come here often and this time it was awful. I had ordered the cobb salad, the lettuce was yellow, there was so much salt on it I couldnt eat it. I took it home and tried to eat it and was throwing up as if there was something off in the food. I didnt feel comfortable sending it back though I probably should have.

This is the best steak restaurant in Chicago - by a country mile!!

By Ben W |

This is undoubtedly the greatest steak place in Chicago - had an amazing rib eye steak, melt in the mouth and perfectly cooked - made the mistake of asking for key lime pie which was delicious but I didn’t have enough room!! Lovely house Pinot and Cabernet

Classic urban steakhouse.

By Jonsimon55 |

Be prepared to throw down some cash but the food is great. Portion sizes are enormous, so keep that in mind if you're staying in a hotel without a fridge. Good classic cocktails. Great service and attentive, professional wait staff. New York Strip was great. We ordered the sauteed spinach (first vegetable in Chicago in four days!), and it was very well prepared. Came out hot, not overcooked and just garlicky enough. One dessert is enough for four people.

great, very attentive staff!

By Kailey |

my best friend had graduation for the navy today came here to celebrate, food was great. meal was free. thank you so much!

Great Atmosphere

By Robert I |

Went there with family members and had a wonderful dinner. The restaurant is located in a great neighborhood with lots of other restaurants. It is crowded but that makes for great surroundings. The food is excellent and well prepared. The rib eye steak on the bone is delicious. Great side dishes and superb service. Highly recommend.

Wanted a great steak, but was dusappointed

By Annette72 |

Tough steak, cold potato, not enough Caesar dressing, poor service - not once did they ask how we were doing and more. House salad tasted like out of bottle.

Wonderful dinner with friends

By MaraMara M |

We were invited for a dinner by our friend. First of all the restaurant is located on the higher floor of the glass building facing the river, so the view is awsome. They serve you immediately the glass of prosseco. All of my friends took the old fashioned coctail and said it was the best they tried. The entres were super tasty. The mail course - rib-eye of 22oz was so tender and kind of sweet that it melted in the mouth. The fish- branzino was excellent. But the best was our waiter, so professional and kind. I am sorry I dis not ask him for the name. I gave 4 just because of the deserts. Tiramisu is for 5, but banana icecream I dis not like, as it was too sweet for my taste, and caramel sauce made it even sweeter. Would love to come again!

Great steaks, better service

By yobyot |

Yum, yum! A splurge but worth it. The food is good, the atmosphere is better and the service top-notch.

Less of a steakhouse; more of a social scene.

By Naveen A |

Less of a steakhouse, more of a social scene. We went EARLY, like 6pm, but they were totally full. We waited for a bit and they got us a table. I've had a lot of very good steak in my life, including here in Chicago. This was disappointing. First, the place is LOUD. It's not good when you have to almost yell at your friends. And the steak: I got a famed Chicago cut, and was quite disappointed. It was too fatty, and not enough flavor. The best part was the cocktail: the Old Fashioned: it was quite good.

Excellent food

By yassou2015 |

Excellent restaurant with a varied menu: varied choice of meat and top quality + delicious desserts (very large portion, take one for two at least). Very good service from start to finish, valet, the hostess, the service, even the toilets, where we are pampered, with a lady who takes great care and sweets offered

Super food - bit pricey

By Simon C |

This is fine dining and therefore fine prices. I don’t think I have ever seen a steak on sale, albeit Wagu, for $160, not that we ate that! However, the food is absolutely excellent and we were fortunate that our server gave us a couple of bonus courses, one of which was a pasta ravioli dish that was absolutely out of this world. He also gave us a bonus set of desserts – yes, three of them, which were great. This did help to make the whole experience memorable, (only slightly dampened by the far too noisy group of seven young women on my right). Somewhere to go for something special

Dinner with friends - fantastic!

By OxfordFLA |

Its been 8 years since my last visit to Gibson's. They haven't lost their touch!! 6 of us dined on a Sunday night and it was the first visit there for 2 of the couples. They were blown away. Our waiter Boz was on point and hilarious! The wedge salad was crisp, fresh and delicious. My ribeye was grilled to perfection. Wine selection was excellent and even though we split the macadamia nut turtle pie 6 ways, we still ate less than half of it!

Filet is flat like a Sirloin and not thick and Juicy like they use to be. Never go back again. Too bad !

By RGP |

Gibsons has gone Downhill believe me. I ordered a Filet Mignon. When I received it I thought they gave me the wrong Steak since it was not thick but thin and not Tender like they use to be. I thought it was a Sirloin? Believe me I think it was. I complained to three people and they all said that even though it was thin it was flat and larger around and weighed the same. What sort of Customer Service us that. I have been going for many years taking Customers out during The National Restaurant Show. Not this year or future years.

Angel, the waiter is the best

By George B |

Great steak and excellent service. Not stuffy and delicious steaks. The staff is outstanding and you may spot a celebrity or two. We did…no names. The lounge had live piano music on a Monday night…awesome. The guys who ran outside in their suits shouting and waving their arms in subzero weather to hail a cab were absolutely wonderful. You need a reservation. It’s worth the money…definitely!

Simply the best.

By FIXWTF |

Absolutely lovely old-school dining experience. The pinnacle of service and hospitality. Great bartenders. Great waitstaff. Great food.

Perfect Spot for Steaks & Cocktails BUT make sure you have a reservation.

By BigMSG |

We were in town for a guys’ weekend, and Gibson’s was the perfect pick—great steaks, drinks, and atmosphere. Luckily, a local friend who’s a regular helped us get a reservation (you’ll need one!). We started with the shrimp cocktail—huge and meaty. Then came the porterhouse steaks (both small and large). We all ordered medium rare and they nailed it. The kitchen sliced them up so we could share, which was great for our group. Our waiter recommended an excellent California Cabernet to pair, and the martinis were also spot-on. We ended with the carrot cake, and it was the perfect sweet finish. Fantastic service, lively ambiance, and top-tier food. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in Chicago.

Great food, atmosphere, & server (Karl)

By Odessa636 |

This place is an institution for a reason. As a steakhouse, it has more charm and character than most, probably because it feels like a local place and not a corporate chain. Not only was the food terrific, but our server Karl made the whole evening that much more enjoyable. He has been there 30 years, so until he retires, I suspect he will be around. Ask for him. He’s that good. Side dishes can be done as half portions, and even with a table of 3-4, half portions are still very generous. You can also share steaks with no additional “splitting fees”. The Chicago cut steak was absolutely delicious, and you won’t find it at national chains, so take advantage. We were too full to even contemplate dessert, though seeing them pass by, I am sure they were delicious too. We would highly recommend this place and Karl. We can’t wait to go back next time we are in town.

Fantastic staff

By ilovecorndogs |

The service and interior of this place are exceptional - really the staff are super highly trained professionals- I was very impressed! We hosted a large (120 person) event and it went perfectly- owner should be super satisfied, everyone is so professional and helpful The interior is very cool no doubt But the food, at least on our fixed menu, not amazing. NY Strip and asparagus only OK, but salmon looked fantastic

Underwhelmed

By LouiseDavenport |

We were very excited for our meal at Gibsons. This was our big treat meal of our trip. The highlights - the bar area was fun with a lively piano player setting a nice vibe. Our server was fine - but no more than fine. The low lights - everything else. Our table was in the most inconvenient spot possible right where the servers enter the kitchen. My husband was constantly knocked into and we just felt in the way. It was so loud even with no music playing. Something about the room amplified the voices. Lastly the steaks were average. This wasn’t one of the better steaks we’ve had (we had a NY strip and a fillet) The meat wasn’t that juicy and we felt was a bit under seasoned. For the price tag this really isn’t worth it. I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Great classic Chicago steakhouse

By Lynn S |

I went to Gibson’s in search of an old school classic Chicago steakhouse. Who knew that it would be such a party? The food is outstanding, the ambience, the decor, lighting, and ample room are also pluses. But the service! Elvis is a gem! The hostesses, the bus staff, even the restroom attendant went above and beyond to make this much more than a steak dinner! I honestly never expected this much of a great evening! Would never return to Chicago without a Gibson’s reservation- it’s worth every penny! Delicious and delightful!

Excellent experience!

By Sarah G |

Gibsons was recommended to me by multiple people. I almost didn’t stay because the bar was so busy I didn’t think I would be able to find a spot. But when I did I was greeted by Mark, the bartender who has been there for decades. What a joy! He was so engaging and welcoming! The food was great, the atmosphere is lively and most of all the staff is outstanding! So glad I made a point of visiting this Chicago staple!

Fine Dining at its Finest

By jmarlow74 |

I had an incredible 10 oz filet here that just melted in my mouth. Everything else was perfect too. Go and pamper yourself.

The Gibson restaurants could be (are?) my favorite place to eat!

By dshafs |

I LOVE taking people here for their first time. Such was the case on this visit. This restaurant is WILDLY popular so make a reservation but be warned. They run behind on reservations frequently - as much as 45 minutes - so be prepared for that. On this occasion, our reservation was running behind so we had a great time chatting at the packed bar. Our reservation was called and we were seated about 30 minutes later than our reservation. Much to our delight one of the floor managers brought us a delicious shrimp cocktail with humongous shrimp on the house with apologies for the reservation being behind schedule. Nice touch. The place was hopping and our service was very good, given the amount of business - and this was a Tuesday night! We had the House cut ribeye and split one of the Australian huge lobster tails. My friend loved it !! He said it was the best lobster he ever had and the second best steak he ever had. A four-top next to us even offered to share their desserts with us which were scrumptious. Please note - this particular Gibsons is lots of fun - but it is vibrant and frenetic. Pretty loud atmosphere. If you want to try Gibsons but prefer a more quiet and romantic setting pick one of the other locations - although they can get pretty energetic also. We love this place !

Such a great place every single time

By Lisa S |

Gibson’s is a magical experience and this time did not disappoint! The steaks are simply the best and the sides can feed an entire table of 8. You can’t go past the crème brûlée and turtle pie for dessert but beware you don’t need both for the table as they are enormous. Service 10/10 - thanks for such a special night celebrating Chicago Marathon. Plus the gf fries were an unexpected treat!

Huge desserts! 🍰

By Silvia-RCMS |

Delicious!!! Huge desserts!! They really are very big! So listen to the waiter. Everything was first class, the attention of the staff, the delicious food and the huge but incredible dessert.

Fun experience in Chicago

By Bettina W |

Real Chicago experience for meat lovers. Food was very well served and they offered first class service. I ate an amazing Chilean Bass! It was divine 😍 We didn’t ask for dessert, but could see the were huge servings.

True Chicago vibes with great food.

By Ivonne & Flore |

Elegant, great people watching, old school, loud and there was even a live pianist there for a while. It was really fun. We highly recommend you try the crabcakes, they were delicious and the Seabass was really good as well; light and a lot of flavor. The French dip wasn’t so good.

Best Steaks in Town

By Melvin Udall |

We visited (my wife, son and his friend) Gibsons Steakhouse in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. Although I had been there a few times, it was my wife’s first time. This restaurant offers an impeccable menu from meats to fish and great appetizers. The ambience,in both the bar and the restaurant, takes you back in time and every staff member makes you feel welcome and important. We had the W.R. Chicago Cut (rib eye) and the New York Strip, all cooked to perfection. I can’t forget to mention their wedge salad was pretty amazing too. Overall, Gibsons is the epitome of great service, great quality steaks cooked to perfection and most of all, their staff is always the best.

Anyone with a physical disability be ware

By Miriam B |

This is our normal go to restaurant for lunch my review is based on management not on the food which is excellent though overpriced nor the service which is always decent. For some reason in the last yr or so Gibsons has chosen to lock their front door entrance forcing people to only use the revolving door so anyone who is handicapped cannot enter not only have they locked the front door entrance they also put objects in front of the front door so that even if someone from the inside opens the door you cannot enter because they only want everyone using the revolving doors. I have spoken 5 separate times to management about this and that's it's unfair to discriminate against people who are not able bodied. Today we dined here for lunch and had to knock for a very long time and very loudly before someone heard us and unlocked the door so we could enter. This is clearly a violation of the ADA. After months of trying to get them to please accommodate my disabled daughter I finally contacted the city who will be sending an inspector out there. It's a shame that a restaurant known for its hospitality would treat individuals like this

Disappointing

By cleo |

Haven eaten here many times on our trips to Chicago from the uk but we were very disappointed with todays meal. The porterhouse steak was ok nothing amazing as in the past. The sides were barely warm, who wants to eat cold fries. They did replace the sides but the vibe was all wrong by then. My husband’s old fashioned cocktail was lovely but the mojito was really watery and poor. Just a really underwhelming experience. At over 200 dollars for lunch for two i would expect better. We are in town from another 3 days and normally would go again but we have been put off. Maybe just a bad day or has this place lots its shine. Shame,

Already can’t wait to return!

By Marsha W |

We’ve eaten at many nice restaurants but this is one of those rare times when after eating somewhere, I had to write about our experience — right away!!! Gibson’s was recommended to us by our hotel staff and it did not disappoint - we were able to walk there easily and from the moment we were seated, the experience became more and more positive. Even though Gibson’s is famous and known for their meats, we are fish eaters and the choices were many. The food went beyond expectations - the salmon was the best my husband said he’d ever had and my jumbo crab cake was made of nothing but crab and was out of this world. But even more than the food was the service — the three people who serviced our table were easily the best we’ve ever experienced — I can’t say enough about Pooya, Horatio and Amanda — the three of them were so amazingly attentive as well as incredibly personable and I we hope they’re all there when we visit next.

Excellent choice for a classic Chicago steakhouse!

By LisaEddie |

We wanted to go to one of Chicago’s best steakhouses on a recent trip and Gibson’s was an excellent choice. The service and food were outstanding but the dessert was something special you must try! A definite great stop while in Chicago. Our server Greg made it even more special.

Nice view, crummy food.

By Philip L |

Our team was treated to a six course meal starting with appetizers, salads, pasta, then steaks, or seafood, and desserts. I ordered a 14 ounce ribeye steak that was supposed to be outstanding, but it was so tough. I could hardly chew it and only ate three bites before pushing it off to the side of my plate. My colleague next to me ordered the same steak and had the same experience. A meal as expensive as this one was should have served either choice or prime beef, but I can promise the beef we were served was not even close to either of these grades.

Great experience

By Karen H |

The steaks are made to perfection. The service is impeccable. The atmosphere is timeless and welcoming. Eating at Gibson is a true delight from start to finish.

Skip it….

By MMCT62 |

My family was looking forward to a night at a steakhouse and this was beyond disappointing. We were in and out in under an hour. Our entrees were served while we were still eating our salads. We ordered cocktails but food served so quickly we didn’t even get a chance to order wine with dinner. Steak was grossly over cooked. I sent it back and replacement dish was not much better. All the steaks were much too salty. One entree was comped but overall this was a waste of our time and money and put a damper on our first night of vacation.

Best steak house ever!

By Taylor E |

This place easily took the cake for the best steak house I’ve ever been to. Out waiter was Michael, and he is the MAN! I had never had an oyster so naturally I order one, and he gave me the whole run down and process to eat one (absolutely loved the oyster by the way). We were a group of 5 and naturally we all wanted slightly different things, but my man Michael suggested that we get the 48oz porterhouse and the 32oz tomahawk which is what we did, and oh my god they were some of the best cuts of meat I’ve put into my mouth. The tomahawk was to die for! Overall I’d rate an easy 8/5, if I lived anywhere near Chicago and also wasn’t a broke college student I’d 100% come again!

Still as good as ever.

By armagh222 |

This was the last dinner during my 16-day trip in the US, and I was not disappointed . It was a Monday night, and the place was packed, so I definitely recommend making a reservation. Lee, our server, was great regarding menu advice and general conversation . Steak quality was excellent, cooked to perfection, and very tasty . Gibsons was probably the best meal we had during our holiday, and I can't wait to return.

Do not deserve their reputation

By Heine Husted H |

This place is one of these required must visits for steak in Chicago. But I have had better. Our server was nice and did his best. But a medium cooked steak cannot be cold inside. This was the general trend here. The kitchen obviously did not care about What they did, and it showed

So much fun!

By revsunshine |

Great food not the place for a quiet night out. Crowded and fun! Not your typical stuffy steakhouse!

This now takes on the title of best steak I’ve ever eaten!

By Virginia K |

Everything you’d expect and more! Great atmosphere, even better food & fab service. Can tell why this is an institution! We had first seen on Chicago Med 😂 and decided to book based on that when we visited. Eclectic clientele, it’s loud and fun. My husband got slightly grizzly having to wait in the small entrance for our table, but he got over himself when he got his dinner! I took a pic of our food but it doesn’t do it justice since I won’t post. Steak divine!! We went back for coffee and a giant cookie in the bar area a couple of lunch times later and again it was a different vibe but we loved it.

Impeccable Service

By Annie |

Gibsons gave us a bit of old world vibe, similar to Gage and Tolner in Brooklyn, but not quite. The steaks were to die for… the desserts enormous and the wait staff was top notch. I can’t wait to go back. It’s a perfect and lovely location in the Gold Coast district.

Great food

By Ayman H |

Great food and service. The stake was amazing , perfectly done and the atmosphere was great. Will definitely go there again.

Great drinks!

By lucycan |

Started the evening at the bar at Gibsons. Such old school classy style. Water served right away. Dressed up bar tender made excellent drinks. Not that expensive for the place and service.

Not to be missed

By Dr_Gis64 |

Saved this till our last dinner in Chicago and it was definitely worth the wait. Incredibly busy on a Friday night but a very classy experience from the pianist tinkling away in the bar, through to the grand salon that was buzzing, for a delicious dinner. Our waiter was delightfully attentive, took the time to explain all the different cuts of meat and basically nothing was too much trouble. The steak was amazing and would highly recommend a visit for the experience. Thank you

Disappointed experience

By Sunshine533317 |

Food was served cold, delayed, and meat was not cooked as ordered. Premium prices deserve premium quality food and service

Fantastic

By CLEWOOD |

The only negative aspect of the visit is that Gibsons is so popular, it feels as if the restaurant is squeezing in more tables making it difficult to move around or have some conversations. That being noted, appetizers were amazing as were cocktails, the sides were good, not great, the steaks were amazing and still some of the best in the world and I’m happy to see that the wine list continues to have some great wines at reasonable prices. There’s a reason why Gibson’s is a Chicago institution - the steaks are amazing.

Do not eat here.

By Laura M |

Simply put, worst steak I have ever had. I love a good crust, this was burnt and tasted like carbon. Why would you do that to a nice piece of meat? It was offensively bad. Super crowded, sides were fine but nothing special. Caesar salad was bland, croutons tasted like they were from a box. I love food and this was the most disappointing experience.

Early Anniversary made memorable!

By Ruth D |

Food was amazing and the service could not have been better. Our server Matthew clearly knew his “steaks” and made our early anniversary dinner very special. This will be a must go anytime we return to Chicago

Very dissapointing experience, poor service and average food

By Bill M |

Gibsons was recommended to me by a Chicago native so I booked a table with my wife for Father's day. Our service was flat-out awful and our food was average at best. It was surprising since I know that this a popular restaurant. At the start of our meal a manager poured us water and left his card on the table. This seemed like a nice touch but when I emailed him to let him know about my poor experience I didn't even get a reply. My advice would be to skip Gibsons since every other meal we had in Chicago was top-notch.

Gibson's Porterhouse was good

By Siam-Orchids |

I was in Chicago for a business meeting. Gibson's was close to my hotel. Steak was good, not Peter Luger's good but good. Creamed Spinach was weak. Waiter was friendly, service was good, crowd was all having a good time. Will I return ? Probably.

One of the best meals I’ve ever had!

By Nick G |

One of the best eating experiences I have ever had! Service was impeccable but the food was just so delicious! But Elvis was quite frankly the best waiter that I have had the honour to be served by!

Delicious

By swiftmi |

Had a business dinner here and was glad we selected this restaurant. Service was excellent and prompt. I had the bone in ribeye and it was delicious. Someone in our group said they have a 1600 degree oven they sear the steaks in I will say the outside of my steak was nicely seared and added to the flavor. Our group shared several sides and all were really good. There were 9 of us and we shared 2 deserts…carrot cake and an ice cream cake with chocolate and caramel sauce. Both were great but we could have fed all 9 of us with just one desert they are so large. Great spot for a great meal.

Delicious Steak

By madamree |

Excellent steakhouse frequented by locals. I recommend making a reservation. Use the Gibson’s seasoning on the table it definitely offers a flavor boost. Tables are placed very close together. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We look forward to returning.

Good food and cocktails

By Civilin |

Restaurant highly recommended. We had a rich burger and a very hearty and rich salad. We also had two cocktails that were more than right.

Gibsons Steakhouse - a classic Chicago restaurant!!

By byMT305 |

Gibsons Steakhouse & Bar is a Chicago institution. Very popular, fun ambience, great service (Thank you to our excellent waiter Montrose!!), and great food - Gibsons is a quintessential Chicago steak restaurant experience. On a recent October Thursday night, Gibsons was packed full, and we enjoyed: Great cocktails (Manhattan, Margarita etc) House tomato fish soup - spicy, good Crab cake - good Salmon - very good Sea bass - very good NY Strip bone-in - perfectly cooked; excellent French fries - good Asparagus - grilled; very good Turtle Pie ice cream dessert - very good, enough for 10 people All in all, for a delicious meal (the large menu has something for everyone) and a classic Chicago steakhouse dinner, GIBSONS is the place to go!

Another awesome Gibsons experience… par for the course at this place!

By Aha444 |

Another incredible dinner at Gibsons. This place is just awesome… Montrose is the man too..what great service… not to mention his photographic memory!

Steak isn’t even my favorite meal!!

By Tony I |

We wanted a classic Chicago steak house experience and Gibsons filled the bill. I had the porterhouse and it was honestly the best steak I have had. Almost fork tender and cooked perfectly medium rare on both the strip and the filet. Jonathan was our waiter and made great recommendations and suggestions as far as sides and drinks. Would definitely go back for dinner and next time I’m saving room for the macadamia turtle pie!

Horrible dinner

By Bert G |

Horrible We travel a lot and have been to over 60 steakhouses both in the USA and Europe We picked Gibson's based upon the hotels suggested choice We had reservations for 730 and was not seated until almost 8 pm The waiter gave us this long talk about how their steaks are the best and have the honour of being the best steakhouse in the Midwest. 1st lie. They don't even make the top 40 steakhouses in the USA. Their steaks are wet aged most steakhouses dry age to enhance the flavours of the meat wet aging adds a ton of moisture to the meat Then he went on to tell us they dear the meat at 1800 degrees charring the outside and keeping the moisture inside I ordered my steak well done please don't tell me your thoughts or opinions on my choice The steak came out in a pool of fluids that were pink and cool I cut into the meat and found it best medium I took my first bite and it tasted like it was boiled and bit grilled the waiter sain they grill it for a few then finish it off in the over so as not to burn it what the oven does is cause the meat to get mushy so back it went and when it returned it was at best medium well The steak was tasteless and mushy The double baked potato was also an insult it's a potato that was baked I believe more like boiled smashed and put into the skin and has a piece of American cheese placed on top when served it was hard and warm and like the steak tasteless. No sour cream no bacon bits no chives no salt or pepper Sauteed spinach was supposed to be in evoo if was it had to be the cheapest one available no olive oil taste and served with a lemon wedge Left 80% of the steak on the plate and the whole potato waiter asked how we enjoyed i explained my situation and he said ok and gave me the 245 bill which I gladly paid. I never have a problem giving charity I wrote to the restaurant who has as expected not responded Look at other reviews and they only back up our dinner situation There are far superior steakhouse choices choose one of them

Top notch service

By DimakCanada |

We stopped at this restaurant for a bite to eat in late afternoon because we saw a beautiful patio that looked incredibly inviting. Top notch service - our waiter was very helpful recommending white fish which we split between two of us. Huge portion and delicious! Loved that the manager came by and introduced himself.

Staff and food equally fabulous!

By Gumpie |

Fabulous as always! Staff and food equally fantastic. Staff always make you feel welcome and our waitress Nikki was simply lovely.

Good Mother’s Day lunch

By chr888 |

Restaurant was busy and it was clear the staff worked hard to keep up. Overall service was fine. Steaks were good but not exceptional, sides of twice baked potato and sprouts were very good. Extensive wine list, fantastic cocktails and great atmosphere. Certainly would give it another go when we visit Chicago next.

Almost always great

By CLEWOOD |

Gibson’s has a fantastic atmosphere, staff, steaks and sides. I continue to believe their steaks are the best in Chicago. Hands down! I don’t want to take someone’s job or overly complain, but the usage of a bathroom attendant was awakened and annoying for our large group that didn’t bring cash to pay the gentleman. It’s a negative on the night that was not necessary as folks as others for cash.

Nice solo lunch visit

By kiwiblondie |

Had a great late lunch today where I was eating solo. I arrived at 3.30pm and the restaurant was half-full but still had a nice atmosphere. Good was good but the standout was the service from Amelia who was friendly, had good recommendations and followed by my single table efficiently — she was was able to identify my accent as being from New Zealand which was fun.

Not as good anymore

By Champion 2014 |

It was for more than 20 years the top spot for steaks. It is not anymore. The pricy steaks are average and mostly burnt. The wine list lost a lot of good ones from the past and is mostly overpriced. We paid 180 dollars for a wine that cost you at most 20 dollars in Europe for that quality. We will go somewhere else after being loyal for more than 20 years.

65TH BIRTHDAY OF HUSBAND

By MAUREEN S |

The food was not HOT! Potatoes were nothing special, no butter or scallions or anything ontop of them. The salad was tasty and the steak needed to be more seasoned, more reduction and HOT! Server was from Serbia and he was great! I Love my food Hot! The fans going above didn't help either. We sat on the what seemed to be an outdoor patio rennovated but the windows let cold air in and too many people seated all over the restaurant with COVID? Maybe try again but for those prices I expect finished plates and these are not.

Great food and service

Mazanaga was wonderful. Helped with accommodations on the menu. Great food and great service. We loved the atmosphere as well!

Another great meal at Gibsons

By ms1363 |

We had a wonderful meal the other night, place was packed as always. All the food and service was awesome, steaks, sides, wine etc. Only issue was 8 of us at to small of a table, but it was extremely busy, I get it. Elvis was the waiter, he was great,

Gone Downhill

By WorldTraveler |

This place has gotten worse and worse every time I've been and I will no longer waste my time going. Service is abysmal for a place that considers themselves to be fine dining. Don't waste your money on the steak it's overpriced, under-seasoned, and poorly cooked. The only thing I would recommend here are the desserts and I get them to go/carryout.

Great Steak

By SueKot |

This was a meal for my husband’s birthday. It was more than excellent. All the dishes were prepared well. For starters the shrimp cocktail and crab with avocado were delicious. The New York strip was my husband’s choice and he ate it with relish. I chose the chicken which was large as was the stuffed baked potato. We had so much some came back in doggy bags. Service was exemplary as well as very friendly. All in all the best steak we have ever eaten in Chicago and we have been to many restaurants.

Terrible experience at Gibsons Chicago

By Luis Carlos S |

We went on the night we had dinner and when they gave us the table we went to the bar and the “bartender” which is saying a lot was the rudest person I have ever seen in a restaurant. He shouted and applauded us in an extremely aggressive way in our faces! Yes, in the face because he wanted us to quickly order what we wanted to have. TERRIBLE experience, it is not possible for people this crazy to have in a restaurant. The food is really quite average. I will NEVER return to this restaurant because of the poor treatment at the Bar tender and the poor quality of the food.

Gibson’s Yummmm

By Sac2Travelers |

The best entres for the night were the ribeye steak, the filet mignon and the Chilean Sea Bass. We all had the house salad and their dressings are all homemade and were absolutely delicious. We also had sides of mushrooms, asparagus, brussel sprouts and double baked potato. The portions are really large and we had so much to take home it looked like we had been grocery shoppping! If you don’t want leftovers, I recommend splitting a meal. Great, attentive service and wonderful meal. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g35805-d455964-r941338679-Gibsons_Bar_Steakhouse-Chicago_Illinois.html#

American fast food at its worst. There are better options.

By KenCage |

American fast food at its worst. This proports to be a quality steakhouse. It is certainly not a fine dining experience. I spent well over $300 for two to have a cocktail, eat a salad, steak with wine, potatoes and creamed spinach within one hour. This was not on "my schedule". After ordering a cocktails, we were served bread and salad within one minute (by the way , the Caesar salad was served without anchovies even after I asked for anchovies) of receiving the drinks. Our bottle of French Pinot Noir arrived when we had just started our cocktails. Our steaks arrived shortly thereafter. We were rushed, rushed , rushed. The quality of food was average at best. We had the small porterhouse. It was a thin slice and I doubt if it was over 16 ounces, though advertised at 28 . The Caesar was very bland, not the tart savory experience (see anchovies above) that you would expect. Potatoes and Spinach were ok. The three kinds of bread were acceptable. They did provide plenty of butter. My wife also felt I should mention the volume of the restaurant. It was so loud that you could not talk. even though we were seated next to each other. It was not a romantic dinner. It was more like a circus or boxing match. I contrast this meal the prior night at Le Colonial, an Asian Fusion (Vietnamese) restaurant within a block. In our dining experience of over two hours at the Colonial, they served four courses of exceptional food at a relaxed pace. There is a difference between excellent attention to detail, to a "Let's get them out of here" Gibson approach. I will never return. It was an evening ruined.

Birthday dinner

For my birthday dinner we went to this place for dinner. Excellent service and food the same. Very good atmosphere. Very nice bar area.

Must see in Chicago

This is an excellent place to go to eat, talk and have an extraordinary time. Good food, first class service, good cocktails.

Fabulous Meal!

By SeaMariner22 |

I was visiting Chicago with my wife and was told to have dinner at Gibsons by a friend. It is a little difficult to get a reservation especially on weekends so we got a late time on our day of arrival since we were used to West Coast time. Gibsons was packed at 8:30 on a Thursday but we were seated promptly. The service was excellent and very prompt. I had a grass fed rib eye and my wife had Chilean Sea Bass. Both dishes were fabulous. Unfortunately we didn't have any appetite left for dessert...however, Gibsons catered the event we were attending the next night and we had some of their amazing desserts - chocolate mousse, carrot cake, Key Lime tart, and strawberry shortcake. It may have not been the best meal I ever had but it was very close!

Chicago Institution and nice venue with great service. Steaks were average though.

By Peterson J |

Was in Chicago for a work trip and looking for a top steak house. Gibsons was around the corner from the Waldorf Astoria so decided to try it out. Steak was average - not very tender and a bit over cooked for a medium rare. Service was excellent though and very attentive - special call out to Olivia who looked after my table. Overall, decent steak house and clearly a well known Chicago institution, but I still prefer Luger’s in Brooklyn and Barclay Prime in Philadelphia in terms of food.

What is this place?!?! Wow!! Amazing! Must go!!

By srudy114 |

This is place is a must!! One of the best filets I’ve ever had!! 7 oz filet mignon was cooked (medium) perfectly and I could literally cut it with my fork. Wow! You can’t go wrong with this place. It’s worth the price!!

Servers with bad attitudes

By Princesa Kristina |

Extremely disappointing visit: I came to Sweet Home Chicago for my high school class reunion. I used to live in 25 East Oak and Gibson's was where I chose to have dinner out of many restaurants in Chicago. As soon as we arrived, we were informed by the hostess that we "must" order entrees in order to be seated outside on the patio. We had planned on having cocktails and dinner and never before have been told by the hostess what we had to order by any restaurant. That was a turn off. It was a lovely evening and the patio was not at capacity, as we saw several open tables. Our female server, who did not introduce herself, took our order for crab cakes. She then stood by the hostess stand pointing at us, and making us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We wondered if she was in training or had an issue with us. It was most disconcerting. We asked another server for some bread to accompany our crab cakes. Then we never saw our female server again. Another server took our cocktail order. I was perusing the menu deciding on my entree. Then we were approached by a Manager, Jordan. She was lovely. We told her what happened and how we felt unwelcome. We planned on having dinner as I was starving and was reading what was on the entrees, as I have food allergies. But we still didn't feel welcome. Therefore, we decided not to stay with servers whispering and pointing at us. I tipped Jordan in cash and we settled up our ticket and went elsewhere for dinner. This is my new memory of Gibson's.

Best steak in Chicago.

By Norman |

Best steak in Chicago Visited for an evening meal to celebrate my son's birthday. Fantastic venue, bustling, servers are ultra professional, we all had steaks, cooked and presented to perfection. A very memorable evening, highly recommend.

Despite a reservation we had to wait 1 hour. Dissatisfied.

By LizaStockholm |

We had booked a table well in advance but still had to wait an hour to get a table! The hostess was not nice and had strange explanations about why there was still a list even though we had booked. The food was mediocre in relation to the price. The salmon was dry. The bartender was the only positive thing in our experience. Our waiter was expectedly nice but booking and the hostess require improvement! Will not go back.

Wonderful dining experience!

By Joseph C |

Gibson's is an institution in River North. It does not rest on its well deserved laurels and continues to serve excellently prepared food and spectacularly good cocktails. The premises are attractive and every employee provides warm and efficient service. Our server, Sandra, was superb. They are famous for their steaks but we both had wonderful seafood dishes.

Enjoyable Evening and great food

By JKWPittsburghPA |

My wife, daughter, son-in-law, and I had a great dinner Saturday night at Gibson's. We were shown to our table upon our arrival and enjoyed the elegant atmosphere, although it can be somewhat noisy. My daughter recommended the marinated Hanger steak and it was beyond excellent. It was tender and cooked perfectly with an abundance of good beefy flavor. My wife enjoyed her prime rib and Adam's porterhouse was marbled beautifully and cooked to his liking. Our server was outstanding and very personable. I thought the food prices were very reasonable for the quality presented, but was disappointed when my three CC's on the rocks were more expensive than my steak. More water less booze for me the next time! The food definitely warrants a return visit.

Very good, yet stakes are a little overpriced

By Christian P |

The atmosphere is nice. The staff is very attentive and kind. The food is overall very good. For appetizers we ordered the wedge salad and crab cakes. DELICIOUS. As an entree we had the signature steak, a rib eye. I’d rate it an 8.5 out of ten. Good flavor, but I like my premium cuts about an inch thick, this was leaner and I think a tad bit too expensive for the size of the steak. I can’t put any photos since we ate everything right away, but as dessert we had the macadamia nut chocolate cake and everyone liked it.

Best Chicago's Steakhouse.

By Guillermo B |

The most traditional and emblematic steakhouse in Chicago. Start with a Dry Martini, then a starter of horse salad, continue with a good porterhouse steak accompanied by mushrooms and potatoes. For dessert, chocolate pudding or creme brulé... you can't fail.

Poor customer service read other reviews (ruined experience could’ve easily been resolved)

By Jasmine S |

I had a truly disappointing experience at Gibson’s on Sunday due to the host's rude and dismissive behavior. Her name was Paige. We arrived at 9:44 and showed her our reservation confirmation on my phone. (we called and were assured that we would be assisted before if we arrive before 945. I have the call confirmations and screenshots to confirm). After an exaggerated pause she refused to seat us in the dining area and told us it was now 9:45 and we could “sit at the bar” in the most condescending tone. Her attitude was completely unprofessional, leaving us feeling disrespected and ignored. It's incredibly frustrating when you're treated this way, especially when you have called ahead of the reservation. I understand and respect timelessness, but after physically showing her my phone reading 9:44 I feel she had every intention on not providing customer service to guests. (She left minutes later I believe she was just ready to get off the clock.) I hope the management at Gibson’s takes this seriously and addresses the poor customer service. This experience has left a lasting negative impression. After countless years and multiple generations of my family patronizing it is very unlikely we’ll return unless this situation is resolved. I trust you’ll take this feedback seriously and work to ensure future guests don’t have to experience the same poor treatment.

Excellent atmosphere and food

By John E |

Definitely has that high end steakhouse vibe. Our waiter was extremely helpful and educated my teenagers on the different cuts of meat.

Pleasantly Surprised!!! Definitely recommend

By Ron G |

We were pleasantly surprised.....was expecting a dark old school steak house (which would have been fine) but were greeted with a great energy bar and a welcoming staff. We were seated almost immediately at a great table on an indoor patio (prefer this over main dining room). Service was great and loved the steaks. Really can't go wrong with any of them. Definitely recommend for a couple and/or family. Arrive early if you want a drink in a cool bar. Enjoy!!

Great staff, delicious food, don't worry about what you're wearing!

By LA D |

Had a delicious lunch at Gibsons! Ribs were done perfectly and were so tender. Crab cake was wonderful. Staff were all friendly and on top of everything. Heard mixed suggestions on dress attire...you see everything from suits, blazers, dresses, capris, a few men had shorts and a polo with tennis shoes, a couple women had dress shorts with a blouse. So go and enjoy a great meal with great staff and don't worry about what you did or didn't bring with you to wear into the restaurant - just go and enjoy a wonderful meal!

Great night

Excellent meat, very hearty but it is possible to share. The staff is very friendly. We had an excellent evening

Phenomenal meal

By SamanthaStrange |

Phenomenal meal! Fiancé had the porterhouse and said it was the best steak she's ever had. I had the filet with the garlic and it was soooo good! Both cooked perfectly! We had the asparagus and the elotes and they were soo good! We ended with the macadamia turtle pie that was yummy and huge to say the least! I would go back to Chicago just for this meal

Dynamite dining experience

By JESMizzou |

Dynamite experience: Top drawer Martini, Steak was perfection, sides delicous (Brussel sprouts, baked potato) and the deserts were insanes (4 pound slice of carrot cake!!) Was resistant o going because it felt like a "tourist spot" but do not let this deter you - lives up to the hype for a quintessenial white table cloth spot. Upscale, but not too upscale that it was stuffy and uncomforatble.

Love Gibsons/Exceptional Manager

By Meghan S |

Gibsons is nothing short of fantastic. We frequent this location quite often and have never been disappointed. Our last visit in May was even better than normal due to James the restaurant manager. James answered a few quick questions I had. More than that he made us feel like more than patrons, but as if we’ve known him forever. Gibsons is lucky to have James, he is a perfect fit for this exceptional establishment.

Loved everything about Gibsons!!!

By LOUDLY P |

Just awesome. Excellent food. Great hostesses and overall service. And if by chance you get Anthony/Antonio to be your waiter, you hit the jackpot!!!

A must try steak!

By GM |

Although place was crowded I was served promptly . Not too much interaction service wise but the food experience exceeded my expectations. The oysters were amazing and the steak sandwich was delicious….. steak was so tender and tasty and also coleslaw was great. Would definitely go back just for that!

Great food great service over the top experience

By Dee K |

Absolutely one of our favorites, the food the service the ambiance. Absolutely love this place. The seafood the steaks, never had better. The waiter even went over to their sister restaurant to get me real Wasabi for my oysters. That was a real plus. First that he went out to their sister restaurant just down the block to get it but also that it was real Wasabi and not horse radish with green food coloring. The derests are also to die for and big enough to serve the entire table. This is one of our favorites in Chicago.

The quintessential Chicago steakhouse

By TravelingSoul007 |

This is a quintessential steakhouse located in downtown Chicago off Rush Street. It is rumored to be the steakhouse where Michael Jordon and other famed Bulls players hang out for a late dinner. The atmosphere is awesome and the waitstaff are even better. The steaks are amazing, so nothing but high accolades her. A must try place!

Wonderful Meat and Best service

By Luis A |

Great experience. Cuts are so good and high quality. After a dissapointing experience at The Capital Grille Chicago Downtown, we had a wondeful dinner with my wife and kids. Great service and assesment to select the best meat cuts. As a foreign tourist I totally recommend Gibsons as a "must visit" place if you go to Chicago.

Underwhelmed

By NHTraveler81 |

We came for an iconic Chicago steak dinner and left feeling like we missed that experience. One of our steaks was forgotten and another came out over-cooked. The restaurant offered us complimentary drinks and a new steak while we waited for half of our food to come back. The result was not eating together and certainly not what we were hoping for when we chose such a purportedly distinguished restaurant.

Unfortunately we ate burnt meat

By Gulnaz O |

The meat we wanted as “well done” came completely burnt. The french fries were also burnt and evet oily. The only good thing was the live piano playing inside the restaurant.

Great service, dry steak!!!!

By luckydog172 |

As a TripAdvisor follower, I checked the reviews and went for it. We made reservations at that last hour and we were accommodated. We sat outside and it was bit crowded and tables too close to each other. We got a bottle of " La Crema" SC red wine , 2 Filet 7 oz, one 14, a filet Salad, a Cesar Salad, a house salad , sides of mashed potatoes, baked potatoes , and mushrooms. We asked for med well and the waiter said it's gonna be " Pink" and we said great!!!! Upon receiving our orders the steaks were ALL dry and tough. It was very disappointing, but no one wanted to send it back as we had a long walking day and tired. We told the waiter thought that none of these steaks are pink and they are dry. He comped us a dessert for the table which I share the picture. We had a good time, but as a stray house, the chef should know better to watch out for the dryness of this delicate piece of cut.

Overcrodwed, slow service

By Michelle G |

We came here for a special anniversary dinner. We had reservations, 8pm. the place was extremely crowded and after waiting to see a hostess we waited a few minutes and we were seated at a booth right when you walk in, hardly a nice spot , it was a booth where everyone has to pass by you. The noise level was crazy and we elected to wait for a better table. We sat finally in a 2 seater table in the corner, more quiet. The tables are right next to one another, the servers have multiple tables and wait times can be more than what one expects from a high end restaurant. Nothing special here if your celebrating anything, go elsewhere if your expecting more.

Worth the wait.

You can't miss! The best steakhouse in Chicago. I have been to Gibson's several times and never a bad meal.

Awesome date night

By Jennifer J |

This is my favorite in Chicago. Food is prime, staff are attentive and professional without being stuffy. My server was funny friendly and corrected issues right away. Even surprised me with a birthday dessert. The sides are huge so don’t over order. Worth every penny.
