Great Food Great Flavors

By CaptnBob |

We had dinner at Gin's with about 10 friends last evening. One of our friends is from Taiwan and he was our host. He had pre-ordered the various courses and there were many. I don't eat Chinese food very often but this may change that. Everything was really good. The flavors were what so impressed my wife and I. I visit San Antonio quite often and usually visit my favorite Tex Mex restaurants but I'll definitely put Gin's in the rotation.

Superb service, great food

I called for take out and received good phone service and even better in person service. Friendly, family run business with good food. Made girls night in a success!

Great Lemon Chicken All White Meat, but the Sauce?

By LaraLee55 |

I looked for a close to home chinese where I could call in and pick up quick. So Gins won out. Especially people said Lemon Chicken is good. I called to make sure all white meat, it is and so I ordered it w/white rice and 1 egg roll. Generous servings, nice people, chicken was good, but sauce is Orange and greezy looking? All lemon chicken I ever had before sauce was a thick yellow. I tasted the sauce, it was just ok, but have to have sauce for lemon chicken. Rice was cold? I may give them another try?

Delicious Food in a Humble Atmosphere

As a San Antonio native, I have been dining at Gin's since childhood, probably over 20 years! It started out as one small restaurant (the building you enter and all the seating to the left is the original restaurant) and over the years, has expanded to include a larger dining room to the right. Gin's is run by one family, who clearly, knows how to do it right. You don't go back to one place for twenty years for bad food. I have tried many things on the menu-and have never walked out disappointed. Of course, I have my favorites: The Orange Chicken is crispy with the right amount of sweetness (not covered in that awful jelly-like goo as so many other are). Sometimes, I crave Gin's chicken with green beans-stir fried with the perfect amount of saltiness and the green beans-always fresh and crisp. On a cold day, I go for the simple but hearty ten-treasure noodle soup. I find myself sipping the broth right out of the bowl. For lunch, I gravitate toward Kung Pao Chicken-spicy, salty and flavorful. At other Chinese restaurant's, I won't waste my calories on the fried rice, but at Gin's, I ALWAYS get the fried rice. In a nutshell, the food is what keeps people coming back for more. If you are looking for a romantic dinner date, I wouldn't count on it. Twenty-something years of being in service has taken a beating on the place-and it shows. If at all possible, try to be sat in the smaller, more intimate (and cleaner) section of the original restaurant to the left. Service is prompt and prices remain reasonable-you can get lunch with tea and leftovers for under $6.

Oh So Good!

This is one of the restaurants we really miss. Food is fantastic, the portions are overflowing, the price is still so cheap. Service is good and fast. The fried dumplings make your mouth water.

Authentic

The food is absolutely amazing. I've been coming here forever!! I definitely recommend the orange chicken, and pan fried dumplings. They have the best green beans I've tasted. Consistently Gin's has served us well.

Excellent!

On December 29, 2023 Peg and I journeyed from the wilds of Kerrville to The Big City to meet our friends Danny and Chris for lunch at Gin's. Chris and her family have been eating there for around 30 years, so Peg and I were eager to give it a try. Chris raved about the pork dumplings and they were the first thing we ordered. This is one of the few Oriental restaurants that does not limit you to a small fixed number of dumplings. The menu lists various numbers per order up to 25; we, being modest eaters, ordered 20!!! These are not the usual frozen variety but made in-house. Neither are they lacking in filling--these are plump little guys. Served with Gin's dipping sauce, they were the perfect appetizer. The flavor was subtle and well-balanced and among the best I've had--and I've had a LOT of dumplings in my life! In fact, I'd be more than happy to make a meal of just them. Dumplings dispatched (or so I thought--more on this later), it was time to order. Lunch specials are served a bit differently here. The usual is soup, egg roll or Rangoon, rice and entree. Here no soup is offered but you have a choice of an egg roll, 2 Rangoons or 2 dumplings--order these and don't be surprised if you find yourself ordering more--, a double scoop of rice, (get the fried), iced tea and entree. It was Kung Pao Shrimp for Chris, Orange Beef for Danny, Peg opted for Chicken with Green Onion and I chose Beef with Green Onion with fried rice and egg roll. Luckily, everyone offered me a taste of their dish. I, being demure by nature, . . . jumped at the chance to taste them! All were excellent but I'll focus on my Beef with Green Onion. The bane of most Chinese restaurants is an attempt to wow their patrons with bold, in-your-face flavors which are an assault on the senses. The saucing and spicing hide the natural flavors of the ingredients. And it seems everything must be literally swimming in sauce. Not at Gin's. My Beef with Green Onion revealed minimum, well-seasoned sauce. The beef was extremely tender without being overcooked; the green onions were neither muted nor bold, with their flavor complimenting the beef as an equal partner in the dish. This is a perfect example of how a deft hand in the kitchen can elevate a simple dish to something a high-end establishment would be proud to serve. The fried rice had actual flavor. Don't scoff--at many restaurants it is woefully tasteless. Finally, my egg roll was plump, not at all greasy, and very flavorful. I usually find myself dunking them in either sweet and sour or duck sauces but these stood on their own. When I had finished, Danny asked, "Does anyone want more dumplings?" Don't have to ask me twice! Even cold, they were excellent! Peg and I seldom venture to this side of San Antonio but from now on, when we're in the mood for Chinese, it's to Gin's we'll head. The decor is modest but everything was clean and tidy. The food is flavorful, the people friendly--couldn't ask for more!

Great Food, Horrible Service.

By dgamez88 |

I have been going to Gins for 20 years...the food is Great but has horrible Service...there is two ladies Susan and Lisa...DO NOT sit in there spots...Susan see you coming up and sits you in a different section. She just worries about large groups of men and flirting. And Lisa is just to slow. And stands right at your table to make sure you leave tip that she surely does not deserve. The others are ok. I guess takeout is better but be sure to know you will be missing something.

We only visit Gins Chinese Restaurant because the owner cooks the dishes by himself and the dishes are very decent and authentic. Highly recommended.

Great, quick, friendly service and nice lunch specials! We've been here a couple of times and it really is a good choice for Chinese food! Wish it was closer to where I live and we could order take-out!!

Great and authentic Taiwanese food.

This restaurant has many options but I recommend to ask for the Taiwanese specialities. Good quality of the products.

A Has Been

We used to frequent this restaurant back in 97 and it seems that the cook might have left back then too! The food was lukewarm, rice sub-par, breaded chicken when it should have been without breading for the dish. The place needs a thorough cleaning inside and out! The bathroom made me cringe! I don't know how this restaurant got the ratings it has but someone is not being honest. The health department needs to pay a visit if for nothing but to require the owners to scrub the place!

Good Food

I've been going to this place since 1995 and not much has changed, that includes the decor. The service leaves a lot to desire, but the food is really good. I always get Kung Pao Chicken and Crab Rangoons.

Great dumpling and squid with black bean sauce

By bomberrazor |

Excellent chinese food but the interior and the ceiling with water leaking stained should have been clean, it made me think about their kitchen what it look like?

The food is fine

The waitress is very nice! The taste is american--Chinese style. It's not Traditional Chinese food! It's not my type!

Best Chinese food in San Antonio and best price

By Thomas A H |

Great food had a great at a great price. Hands-down, the best Chinese food in San Antonio. A lot of food excellent service for the entire family. Treated us like family. Spicy food is just right ij you are looking for real heat just ask. Otherwise it will just be well seasond for anyone to eat.

Good Chinese Food!!

By Debra W |

Very yummy - it's hard to find good Chinese food in SA, but we had to try as we've heard great things about Gin. We started with Fried Pork Dumplings and Crab Rangoons - both had a lot of filling and they were so good! I normally wouldn't order the dumplings fried, but did based on previous good reviews and I'm glad we did. My hubby ordered orange chicken and I ordered Kung Pao Shrimp. The portions are huge. There was tons of yummy chicken but the sauce was a mystery - it definitely wasn't orange. It may have been sesame, but that isn't even on the menu. My Kung Pao sauce wasn't spicy. I'd like a little more heat. The service was okay, but could be better. I waited and waited for a water refill and finally had to ask. One waiter at dinner is not enough. The one negative was the wasp that dive-bombed my husband and perched on the picture next to is for the entire dinner.

Authentic Chinese. To the point they often segregate non-Asians in the lower dining room dinner hours . Food's great...

A co worker of mine recommended this place & it did NOT disappoint . The staff was extremely friendly & the place was very clean . I had lemon chicken , beef & mushroom with fried rice . Everything was seasoned nicely & piping hot . I came for dinner & the portion sizes were more than appropriate. I’m glad my co worker recommended me here . If you’re in the area it’s definitely worth the try

Great Chinese Food! Prepared by Chinese Owner/Chef!

I have been a long time fan of Gins. The servers are efficient and friendly. The food is all delicious. It is cooked perfectly, fresh and is always served hot. The "SALTY SHRIMP" is a real treat (not too salty) -I highly recommend it. It is a little difficult to find but it is well worth it at lunch time or dinner.

Just outstanding

I live very close to Gins. My Wife and I absolutely enjoy eating here. The food is incredibly good. I have lived in a lot of places and eaten in a lot of Chinese restaurants across the country. Who knew I would find my favorite in San Antonio, Texas of all places! The food is great and plentiful. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

The best Chinese food in town!

By Caballon1941 |

I've been coming to Gin's since 1980 for the excellence of its food, the courtesy of the entire staff and the friendliness of the Gin family...can't beat it!

Perfect pre or post movie spot for food

By Maria L |

They have lunch specials every day, even on the weekends that include fried or white rice and eggrolls or crab Rangoon’s and tea. I like the transparency and listening skills of the servers. They provide information on the menu and they ask for our preferences if we would like green onions on the soup, if we wanted wontons to crumble into i,t if we needed any spicy sauces, etc.. They have an upstairs and downstairs dining area so if you can’t do stairs, you can opt for the other side. It is nice, dark and cool inside it is triple digits in Texas and so it is a purrfect cavelike coolness to have your lunch.
