Excellent location, professional service, great food

By PierreLeBlanc |

Visited Gladstones this past Sunday for lunch, got a lovely table overlooking the beach. The staff were really professional, the food excellent.

Not As Good As It Used to Be

By CABABA |

This restaurant overlooking the beach is very convenient after a visit to the Getty Villa. But to pay $10 (plus tip, not valet) for parking when one is eating there is pretty greedy! Even though the original restaurant was definitely not elegant it had a lot of charm and character. Unfortunately the upgrade has made it look institutional, boring and uninviting. The only acceptable place to now have a table is outside on a nice warm day when the view is absolutely spectacular. Food is just OK and service is pretty poor. Even with lots of empty tables in the early afternoon, while the servers are chatting with each other the customers think that they may have been forgotten - no mention about the long wait for two simple meals and certainly no apologies. Shrimp and Crab Louie is $25, Maryland Crabcakes $20. No need to return.

Best crabcake ever

The view alone is amazing...i always loved crabcakes but this place is AAA+ on their seafood...staff was fun and knowledgable...definitely going back

Dinner on the beach

By James G |

This is a great restaurant. We came here after our visit to the Reagan Presidential Library. Parking is valet but it is worth it. They have inside and outside seating so it doesn't really matter what the weather. Full bar with specialty drinks and a good menu. We did not have reservations but we were seated right away on the patio. The ocean is about 50 feet away and it was nice to watch the surf as it hit the rocks and watch the sunset. The service was excellent. My wife had the fish and chips which were cooked to perfection for her. The batter was golden brown and a large portion of fish. I had the Linguini and clams and they were delicious. This place will be added to our "go to list" of places to eat. Excellent experience.

Beachfront Resto

By amyparam |

Nice location with stunning views of the ocean and beach activities. Choice of indoors or patio. Their food is good. However, the sea bass (Branzino) which was described to be grilled (ideally ) was served fried. Thus, the 4 star.

Great views

By Barbara T |

Ocean front restaurant. Good food but a little expensive. Had the lobster roll and my sister had the clam chowder and tacos. She thought the soup was one of the best she has had. Also costs $10 for parking and there is no validation.

Great view and a lovely meal for the six of us...

By Mary V |

We ate here over the holidays as we wanted a place to introduce a family member to the LA coast. We got there early and were seated promptly. Drinks were served right away and our orders taken - everything went very smoothly and we had a lovely meal. The wait staff was on top of everything and we were even greeted by the owner to our delight. I had filled up on their amazing onion ring appetizer so wound up only ordering a baked potato and side of asparagus - both delicious. Thank you for being a wonderful SoCal place to take our family!

I sooo wish they would have kept the old vibe :(

By Elaine P |

Gladstone's used to be my very favorite restaurant. This wonderfully located beachside restaurant had great good, a friendly and fun atmosphere every time you came and reasonably priced food. The location is the same, they've added a fabulous outdoor seating area and the servers are still great. But.... the comfy, warm vibe is gone, the menu has drastically changed and the food is WAY overpriced :( You even have to pay for the bread, which sedan to be served automatically when you sat down.

Lunch with a view

By Fitzcast |

We had 5 in our party for a 2 pm lunch. It was the first time the girls ( ages 16,17) had ceviche. I read the reviews and thought they should try it, it did not disappoint us. They also liked the Lobster and Mac. The linguine and clams were good as the fish in the fish n chips. The fries were not so crispy. It was a lovely afternoon. We had a nice conversation with our waitress Tiffany. I am glad we made the stop. Check the old Picts on the way to the rest room

Good Food and Wonderful Hospitality!

Lovely coastal setting, nice menu and welcoming hospitality makes for a memorable celebration with friends!

Pacific ocean Seafood

By Marc W |

Glandstones restaurant on the Pacific Highway is a destination and a restaurant serving wonderful seafood “with a view”

Lost A Bit of It's Shine

By Art C |

On a recent visit to Southern California we headed for one of our favorite seafood restaurants, Gladstones For Fish, located at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway. They offer valet parking but do not validate. With tip for the parking attendant and parking fees you start out with $15 on your dining experience. This used to be a very hot spot with a varied menu. The prices were always above average but you were willing to pay the price due to the quality of the food. Sorry to say that they are now just schlepping "average food" to your table. I gave them an extra star due to the wonderful server we had. While writing this post I see that they may be closing their doors in October. Gee, I wonder why.

Wish I could go back in time

By jula l |

This place used to have great food, great service, great atmosphere. Not so much anymore. $20 for a tiny portion of lobster mac n cheese. No thanks. Salad with room temp grilled shrimp - yuck. On top of that, our server was incompetent. Very sad to see how run down and shabby this place has become. And the filthy ladies restroom says it all. Skip this place if you can.

Love the location! Food was a disappointment!

By NBleds |

While visiting LA & southern California about 10 years ago we drove to Malibu and had lunch at Gladstone's. I loved the location & had a delicious lobster roll! Great visit! I have been wanting to go there again for Years! Finally got to eat there again this past Sunday. I was excited to be able to order the lobster roll. I was disappointed. The lobster 'salad' was just ok. Very little taste. I make a better lobster salad.... do you want my recipe? I also love clam chowder & thought I would give it the clam chowder challange( comparing clam chowders at different sea food restaurants) . Sorry Gladstones- your clam chowder didn't get a good rating from me. Red Lobsters is better than yours. The best west coast chowder goes to the Sea Hag in Oregon. I did have your strawberry mojito that was good. We had a great waitress & a beautiful view! I would eat here again, but probably get the coconut shrimp!

Much Better Than I Remember!

By Mary P |

The food was delicious, the ambiance - unbeatable and the service- top notch; thank you Heidi! For location and quality of food, the prices are very good. Everything is fresh and cooked to order. I highly recommend!

Great place to watch the sunset

By CarolinaMom0526 |

The food was good and the pina colada was fantastic! Would definitely go back again if in the Malibu area!

A Renewed Surprise

By markclewis |

Went on Father's day-13 of us.....Our table was ready- service was great-waitress was wonderful-the food was fresh and tasty-and the check was not too high.......It was great and we all walked down to the beach after Brunch......I was very impressed....It has been over 10 years since I've been to Gladstone's-but will have to return soon..... :)

Great views, disappointing food

By Marlene K |

We went twice. For dinner I had the ahi tuna, and a pina colada. My daughter, a vegetarian, got the pasta, substituting the clams for vegetables. Despite great reviews, I found the ahi tuna wanting: it was dry, not very flavorful, and it seemed pre-cooked. The pina colada was great. The chocolate cake is so huge I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a lot of people digging in. We went back for lunch, a more popular time for people. I got a cup of clam chowder, the crab cakes, and a spicy bloody mary. Alas the clam chowder, despite great reviews, was disappointing. A lot of cream; can't taste the clams. The crab cakes were okay but nothing to rave about and definitely not worth $20. Both cocktails were great but at $13, a bit steep. The ahi tuna, at $40, was definitely not worth it. Nor the pasta with vegetables, which was $30--no discount for substituting vegetables for clams. Overall, I would not return except for drinks and the view. The service was excellent.

Mediocre food, service and decor

By Parisa63 |

This was just OK despite all the raves I had heard about it. You obviously can't beat the location right on the beach but the tables and decor are tired, the menu tired as well - predictable and not that exciting. Food execution was poor and food itself not that tasty. The staff was inattentive and not very friendly. Would not return.

Great brunch spot

By 671trueb |

We had a mid-morning meal here on a Sunday. The view was second to none, and the food wasn't far behind. My wife loved her seafood omelette, and I scarfed the crab benedict in record time. Good friendly service was a welcome sight too. Highly recommend!

Great view! Awesome service!

By Dianne G |

Besides the great view, what made this place special was the personalized attention from Christian the bar manager. We strolled into the bar area while waiting for our outdoor table overlooking the ocean and were greeted by Christian who, not only made drink recommendations, but also personalized them to our taste. After we were seated Christian came back over and made recommendations of his favorite dish with a detailed description making it sound delicious. The cod with miso sauce did not disappoint.

Old Gladstone food and menu much better

By Katherine E |

I first visited this restaurant 25 years ago and it was delicious. The location is phenomenal. The food was amazing! I used to look forward to going there every time I was in the Los Angeles area. But I The last time I was there was 5 or 6 years ago and I was so disappointed that I.vowed to never return. The menu had changed drastically and the food was not worth the price. After reading some of these recent reviews and see that some people agree with me. It is so sad that the change was not a good one for people who loved the old iconic Gladstone’s. I see that they will be reopening later this month. Maybe this latest reopening will bring back some of the nostalgia and good food.

Go for the view

By GKBrash |

Work was done and we wanted to celebrate its completion. The boss wanted to head over to the coast and catch the sunset if we could get there in time. He suggested Gladstones in Malibu. We arrived a little after 5:00pm. We parked the car in the restaurant valet lot for $10.00, not including a tip. We decided to go down to the ocean for a few minutes as the sun was setting. It was a Thursday night and at the time we were there it was not too busy. We were seating inside, per our request, because there was a little chill in the air. They do have outdoor seating with heaters if you wish to enjoy the fresh air. We waited to order until after the sun set....which was lovely. The menu is geared towards seafood items, but they do have soups, salads and pasta dishes and some chicken and beef options. Because of its great location they are able to charge, in my opinion, rather high prices. I feel that you are paying a food price premium because of the restaurants location. I ordered the fish and chips. It was prepared well and there were 3 large pieces of fish and a goodly amount of chips. It was good, but not spectacular, especially for the price. Gladstones offers you a good place to view the sunset , but also a place to spend a great deal of money on lunch or dinner.

An Old Standby

By WahineSistah |

I lived in Los Angeles for a decade in the late-90s, early 2000s and my kids loved Gladstones. We'd park and have a great lunch of the fried and grilled variety...then the adults would go out on the patio and enjoy an adult beverage while the kids chased the surf. The waitstaff wraps up leftovers ...there are always leftovers as the portions are generous...in foil shaped like whales, ducks or whatever. The kids are thrilled. Just make sure you keep an eye on them because those pesky sea gulls are onto the tin foil treasures and will rip them open in a feeding frenzy if left unattended outside. The food is good, not great...it's getting to look a little shelfworn, but it's a great place for family memory making.

Just the best sunset in the WORLD

By Roy F |

Loved this place and shame to hear that it’s being developed in 2023 so get yourselves there soon, I first visited in 1992 and 30 years later it looked just the same. Friendly staff, well priced and the sunset WOW!

The restaurant for sea food when I'm in the LA area

By André B |

1st time I went to Gladstones I was amazed by the quality of the food ( sea bass blackened ) very tasty. The other very important point is that we have our meal at the sea shore hearing the waves The atmosphere and the service is great A must do place

Never Any Good

By DoctorRetired |

Sorry to hear that they will close; the property is nice and tourists have made this a destination. But the food - the food! And the prices!! Really average stuff, not very good, and way too expensive. Two tiny bowls - yes, the bowl! - of soup and two tiny lobster rolls. One bottle of Hess chardonnay and their bread and butter...$137 without tip....

Great location with tables inside and outside that are practically oceanside. Staff goes above and beyond to provide a pleasant dining experience. Great food.

Gladstones on PCH

By Gayane G |

Hostess service was not good. It seems they have a special marketing policy to keep people waiting creating an impression that the place is extremely busy. We were told to wait 45 minutes, though when we walked throgh we saw lot os empty tables everywhere and nobody was sited. When we turned to hostees explain it the answer was that those table are reserved but at the end we were sited were was empty all that period. The food was good, we had daily catch tuna grilled and a clam chawder which was good, but the portion/price value I would rate 3. Overall, I can say that before the renovation and rebranding the Gladstobes was a better place both in terms of ambience and service than now. Despite this people always will go there just because of there oceanfront location. That is all.

A terrific if not one of a kind beach eatery on the PCH...

By MsInformedALWAYS |

LOVE this place - Hear the lease is renewed for another 3 years - Woohoo!!!! BUT, thereafter? Santa Monica will no doubt butcher the area with some stupid/ritzy development and RUIN the history, atmosphere and delight of this wonderful beach restaurant that is a LANDMARK in TRUTH in the Santa Monica/Palisades area of PCH. Ah, well. Progress (so-called) marches on (-and if you believe that? I know "a bridge for sale") The food is great - the service is great - the table arrangement great - it's right ON the beach and parking is just fine though expensive ($10 bucks and well worth it) I NEVER tire of this place NOT EVER!

Cocktails and Ocean Views - is there anything better?

By NativeNHite |

We drove by here on our way to an event and made a note to visit another day and are we glad we did. It was only for cocktails on the deck but it was enjoyable and delicious. We came via Topanga Canyon Road and what an experience that was!! Breathtaking beauty.

LOVE THIS PLACE

By On The Road Again |

I know everyone says it's a tourist trap but I love this restaurant and have been coming for over 25 years. When I lived in LA we'd go and now that I don't live there but return for biz, I still love going. I think the food is great and you cannot beat the views. Right on the water and it's just gorgeous. This will continue to be a must dine place on every return trip to LA.

A must go- to restaurant!

By Ramesh S |

Outstanding food, great oceanfront setting and excellent service! Our trips to L.A. are never without lunch at Gladstones!

Great Food

By Michael M |

We came here while visit family in California. My other family members said it was great. They weren’t joking. The clam chowder was probably the best I’ve ever had. The ceviche was bright and fresh. I love eating at a place on the ocean. I have done it just a few time in California but this place was cool. I would recommend.

Very Good Buffet

By GiantDreamer |

My wife and I were on a Rose Bowl tour and this was one of the places we had lunch. They provided a buffet for us and as anyone knows, serving a large group of people can be a challange. Gladstones handled it beautifully. The food was good (especially the Lobster pasta), the service was attentive and the setting was amazing. I know this dosen't speak to ordering off the menue but if can get buffet food to taste fresh and tasty then I think you have a good shot at making made to order food special also.

Fantastic Place to Enjoy Food, Drinks & Waves

By TODD S |

We had a great experience at this restaurant during a business trip from Cleveland. Drinks were delicious, the food was perfect and the view was spectacular. Even without "window" table, we were able to enjoy the sound of the waves crashing and watch people walking down the beach. Our server, Blake, was on top of making sure we were attended to, but wasn't intrusive into the conversation. Our table noticed his efficiency and how he made every table seem like they were the only one he had. I'll be adding this to my list of return destinations the next time we are back in town.

Gone downhill

By Holly D |

Over the past 20 years my husband and I have eaten here a few times. We are from NE and we eat here when we get to Cali. Ordered the crab legs they were soggy. No candle to keep my butter warm. Mashed potatoes had no flavor. They used to have the best loaded baked potatoes. It used to be upscale and classy. The only thing that was good was the Mac and cheese. Won't be going back!

Decent food, but amazing views

By WorldTraveler20000 |

Came here a while ago with a girl friend and her dad. This place is busy! In the restaurant industry they are legend ranking high in the most money made on average per square foot. They have it down, extremely efficient with their space, highly well trained staff, and fun little aluminum foil sculptures made with your leftovers to give you something to talk about when you leave. Would I rank the food quality mega high? No...but its still an "experience" and sometimes that's what dining is all about.

Great view but mediocre and expensive food

By Pam M |

This was a great place to enjoy lunch but the service was slow, the food pricey and the quality was average, at best. 3 people for lunch (with no alcohol purchased) was $120.00 plus parking. The place is always packed, the view is stunning, but the food is not the main attraction so just be aware of that. However, it’s an impressive location, especially for out of town guests and for that reason alone am a repeat customer.

Overpriced and Underdelivered

By RoboPop |

Every year or two I visit Gladstones. It is a great location and I have always enjoyed it. Today, I felt the menu limited, expensive and food very ordinary. In all fairness, the service was excellent and, of course, the venue has all ocean views but I have to say I was disappointed. Just to be specific, the tuna tartare was tasteless but the oysters were very good. Seafood Louis, yuck. Trout, you can pass on that. Fried shrimp, forget it. Although we originally were going to order lobster, at $100 a lobster, we decided to pass. All in all, I think Gladstones' days are over. You can spend the same amount of money at a better restaurant and walk away very happy. Wish I did the same.

So-So Seafood with Splendid Sea View

By Karen B |

What Gladsrones lacks in culinary arts it makes up for with its on-the-beach location. The food is average and overpriced. However the beachy vibe makes this more palatable.

Birthday brunch with cousins on a Sunday

By SusieQKeats |

When my cousins invited me to join them for brunch on a cloudy April Sunday, I was a bit skeptical. But I was very impressed with the valet parking in the public beach parking lot, the short wait for a table right by the ocean and the attentiveness of our server. I had a delicious crab and shrimp Louie salad with fresh, well-chilled crab, shrimp, avocado, green beans, boiled egg, shaved radish and cucumber atop shredded lettuce with the Louie dressing on the side. When my cousins both ordered coffee after eating I should have realized that they had told the server it was my birthday. The complimentary slice of cake was way more than the three of us could eat, the presentation was impressive, and the excellence of the dish was really remarkable. The sun came out when I arrived and added to the lovely afternoon by the ocean as we watched the waves roll in from the Pacific.

Seafood delight

By Matjaz R |

A great place on the Malibu beach with a variety of seafood dishes is a place to be. The portions are reasonably big and the taste of the food was good. We had different seafood dishes and everything was perfect. It is a place to stop on the way to Malibu/Santa Monica beach.

I would not go back!

By Rasheed I |

The place is not very clean or classy. You'd think for an ocean-side restaurant in Malibu (Pacific Palisades), they would take better care of the place. The location is great. You can sit inside or outside and have a great view. The food was just average: -The sourdough bread is excellent. I am a big bread critic, and this was probably the best sourdough bread I had ever had ($2). -The crabcakes were just ok. You get 2 cakes with a little salad (drenched in dressing) for $20. -The Halibut was delicious, although, the side of it was smoke-burnt and unpleasant to look at. I told the waiter about it and showed to him and he he looked at me like I was crazy and said "Well, it is GRILLED!" I explained that this was the smoke from the smoke from the fat from another piece of red meat being cooked next to the fish. He sarcastically said "ok, thank you!" -The filet mignon was just average. It lacked quality and the sides of it were a bit burnt. The backed potato that came with it, was old. It had a bit of cheese on it that looked like from a few hours ago. But, the asparagus was done just right. Cooked just enough to preserve the crunchiness without being on the raw side. -The sweet potato fries were average. I think they should be crunchy...they were soft! -The coffee was terrible! So, the service gets a C- from me. However, the general manager stopped by and I explained the problem with the halibut. he was VERY nice and offered a free dessert, but we were done and since the coffee was bad, we just thanked him. He was apologetic and very courteous (unlike the waiter)! Parking is $11 (valet).

Wonderful location and overly expensive food.

By Cynthia H |

Gladstone's used to be a very popular place, but after it was bought out many years ago, it was changed into the usual beach side restaurant. Very sad.

Great View, Food Quality Subpar for the Price

By Dionges1 |

Have been going to Gladstones since it was in Santa Monica Canyon, off and on many years. Not sure if due to the problems all restaurants are having with their work force and the supply chain for food products, but this experience was not as expected, especially with the price increases and meu changes a few years ago, Wanted to try the Clam Chowder, always a favorite, but the weather was very warm and we were eating outside. Calamari served with a marinara sauce; the traditional seafood sauce can be requested. Lobster Mac & Cheese very good, as was the Mile High Chocolate Cake. There for Sunday lunch and a line formed quickly around 12:00--the restaurant continues to be a popular dining spot for locals and tourists. Service was good, but there were delays since not an adequate staff for a full dining area.

At the end of Sunset Blvd you will see the Beach and a great Restaurant with a huge Patio and and in door restaurant

By Ed M |

I keep coming back to Gladstones so easy to find at the end of Sunset Blvd . The Pacific ocean is right there with a sand beach valet parking and great sea Food . The Deserts are gigantic! Catch the sun on the deck or take in the view from any angle with the mammoth windows on the ocean side of the restaurant.I will always vist Gladstones when I am in LA.

Very disappointed with the level of service received...

By EmpireNY |

Very disappointed in the lack of service received on this Saturday around 3:30pm. We flew all the way from the east coast for the holidays and could not wait for dinner at Gladstone’s...but the service was horrible. The food came out late because some server inadvertently took my salmon and the waitress was so cavalier about the entire thing - as if we were doing her a favor - she never checked on us and we were celebrating a milestone birthday. I’m so upset and disgusted - should of said something but this venue is more impactful. I’m not going to name the waitress...but she knows who she is..If your servers can’t get it together then find some others who care that the customer is the boss! I️ will NEVEr visit any of your locations again.

Ocean Views

By Scubamax59 |

Wanted lunch on the water after visiting the Getty. $9 valet parking makes life easy on a super crowded weekend. Given a buzzer after checking in- about 30 minutes to walk along the beach and enjoy the view which was lovely. When table was ready it was inside, but plenty were empty on the outside deck. When I asked to be seated outside there was lots of sighing and eyerolling by the hostess and staff- but then a table was provided. The waitress was lovely, the food just ok, but the views are what you come for. Be sure to request the area you want to be seated in when you put your name in for a table. Views were great from inside as well, but I wanted the ocean breeze.

Average expected more

By GKL1971 |

Went there with family. Scenery is nice location great. Parking next to the restaurant bit expensive. Food average but prives high. Would not recommend.

Middling food, great location

By HWMNBN |

As other reviewers have noted, Gladstones used to be a Malibu/Santa Monica icon. While it's by no means terrible, I don't think it lives up to that reputation today; you're buying the beautiful beachfront location, and the food itself is middling. On our recent visit, we ordered fish and chips and spaghetti with clams. The fish and chips felt "commercial," with the chips being somewhat dry. London-quality fish and chips this was not. The spaghetti with clams was better, but still a tad overcooked and accompanied with a bland cream sauce. Our starter -- clam chowder -- was much better, luciously thick. The bar also made a mean aperol spritz.

Retro Seaside Seafood Delight

By thomas a |

Retro very attractive seafood restaurant on the beach and with lots of parking to boot. Excellent service and full range of delicious seafood. Only con was the 2nd worst dry martini I have ever experienced (the other was in Utah) - order gin on the rocks as a workaround. Older well kept place with plenty of parking a welcome respite from LA flashiness and congestion. Look forward to returning.

Old, tired and rundown. Food was good. View amazing at sunset.

By Phil W |

Don’t go to this outdated landmark. I used to love going there. Two times ago I noticed it was going down hill. This last Friday I was convinced. It’s WAY past it’s prime. Yes, this amazing view restaurant is on the water. So are others. The problem is the place is run down, sparsely attended and is nothing more than a tourist trap. Service was ok. Seating was unfriendly for an empty restaurant. Surprisingly, the food was good. BUT IT IS WAY RUN DOWN. Overpaint on the very old glass panels. Bathroom doors that stick from too much paint. This place needs to go out of business and cone back after a serious overhaul.

Pleasant Low Key Dining

By Heidi |

After we walked in, I could understand people’s enthusiasm for the feel of the place. The premises is right on the water with fantastic views of the beach & ocean all down one side. On a quiet mid-week winters night, when we went, with poor visibility, it felt like a lovely homey place to be. An earlyish dining time (6.30pm) with few other guests meant timely service & a peaceful atmosphere. The food was good but nothing outstanding - we enjoyed the clam linguine at the recommendation of our cheerful & prompt server, probably the best dish - flavours were good tho quite strong. The ahi tuna was more well done than ‘seared’ - again good flavour. The fish & chips were middling - definitely had been sitting in the freezer for a while. $10 for self parking - tho we understood it’s usually valet parking. Overall a pleasant eating experience.

Excellent Food Service and Sunset!

By loribledsoe |

A friend recommended this location and he was right! We ended up with Amanda as our server and we had drinks then a bottle of wine with Ceviche and sourdough bread then split lobster and filet then topped it all with chocolates cake. Everything was awesome and Amanda did a great job! Would love to come back!

“Authentically LA Beachfront with quality Seafood “

By gina Shakti |

I’m a local and I remember all the times we’ve enjoyed this place over the years; it’s a beautiful location. The resilience from last years fires have made it all the more impressive. The Quality of the seafood is outstanding! Also, we enjoyed the service from everyone, very friendly staff.

Best Fresh Seafood! Fabulous View!!

By jacygem |

We haven’t been here in several years, but with my cousin visiting from the UK we took her. The food is always delicious, fresh and tasty. Really loved the crab cakes and barramundi. Brianna, our server was fabulous! She was friendly and has a great sense of humor. She was gracious in taking our picture. Highly recommend this fabulous restaurant on the water!

Classic restaurant ruined by cheap menu makeover

By devon b |

I’ve been going to Gladstone’s since it was in its original location in Santa Monica canyon over 30 years ago. It was incredibly disappointing to sit down for lunch this week and see the menu continues to look like a cheap chain restaurant versus the iconic place it once was. The tell-tail that things had changed for the worse was the new $2 charge for bread... seriously ridiculous and cheap! Where is the famous she-crab soup? Why do they not wrap all of the to-go leftovers in the fun gold foil animals? The location is beautiful but the menu and service are a distant disappointment to the name and reputation. I suggest taking your money and taste buds up the PCH to someplace better!

Fantastic views and great food

By hankypanky505 |

We were in Santa Monica for a few days and just had to try out Gladstones as it is a local institution. First, the location is fantastic with amazing views of the ocean and you can hear the pounding surf. Their website is a little funny in that it makes it look like this place is super fancy with linen tablecloths and fancy silverware. It is actually an old-school laidback restaurant, super casual with dining out on the deck. It's not flip-flop casual, but more khaki pants and polo shirt casual. The food was fantastic and service was wonderful as well. Someone mentioned the prices were high, I honestly felt the prices were very fair and we rolled out of there for $107 for a great meal. So, it's all relative I guess. But anywhere you eat in this area is going to be expensive, this was actually the least of all the dinners we had, just fyi. But you can't beat the location and ambiance, excellent place to walk on the beach after your dinner and there is ample parking as well. Great service, great food, and excellent location. Oh, and I felt safe dining here with the COVID, the entire staff was wearing masks and the tables were set a good distance apart, so that wasn't an issue for us. But the restaurant is very accommodating, so I think they're doing a great job considering all that is going on currently.

Can’t beat the view

By Anna N |

We had a lovely lunch on a weekday. No wait, a courteous staff & casual decor. As a Marylander we even have the Maryland Crabcakes two thumbs up! Will make it a must do while in town!

Great location and view, Poor service and food

By Mark G |

The location is the best, right on the water, and the view is fantastic! Too bad the service sucks and the food is only marginal. We wouldnt go back except for drinks and appetizers.

Lunch with a spectacular view

By Matthew H |

Gladstones is iconic spot that sits right on the beach at the pacific coast highway. I enjoyed amazing clam chowder, and the surf and turf. The food was tasty and well seasoned. I had two very good old fashioned’s. The sunset for early dinner was the star of the show! The food is a bit pricey, but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

Great food, great view!

By SassyLaura |

The food was AMAZING! I highly recommend the Sea Bass. I know NOTHING about wine, and the waiter was very helpful. The waiter was super nice, and gave us great service. The view is SPECTACULAR!!! Nothing like having a fabulous meal with a view of the Pacific!

Good food with an amazing view

By Monalisa43 |

Gladstones is quite the dining experience ...great atmosphere, amazing food, impressive service with a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. I’m an island girl from the other other side ie Atlantic Ocean so this experience was quite the ‘feel right at home treat’. I highly recommended this fabulous restaurant and of course I’m so excited about my next visit to LA and Malibu so I can again enjoy this delightful experience at Gladstones.

It's almost a restaurant cliche, but you can't miss it!

By Tim W |

Gladstones has anchored the beach at the west end of Sunset Strip for decades. While PCH can be a bear on any 80 degree LA weekend, it is worth the battle in your journey for fresh seafood. Valet parking is offered on the beach for $11 to restaurant customers, easing the strain a little. We came for one reason only: Fresh Oysters and Champagne. Our first date was here 6 years ago, and as I am moving away form LA, we had to recreate that experience. A patio table overlooking the beach, a cold bottle of Mumm Napa Valley, and a dozen oysters was the perfect way to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Yes, Gladstones is kinda touristy, it is a must stop on your way to the Getty Villa or Malibu (or in our case, headed to Palisades Village for dinner at The Draycott). Friendly service, fresh seafood, and an ocean view...what could possibly be wrong with all of that?

Great Food

By elizabethlascheid |

Gladstones is located at the beach in a very crowded area near Malibu. It gets packed there and the noise is not fun. For that I have to take a star. Their service is very good, but not great. The food, however, is wonderful. We love their mac and lobster with cheese as well as their lobster rolls. They have great salad and their ceviche &sunset tower is tasty. We also love their pina coladas. The salmon and ahi tuna are great. I don't suggest eating outside, it is lovely, but can get windy and make a mess of your food. So, check the weather before you have a seat. The view is beautiful, however. Parking is a mess, it is right there but always crowded and if you love your car park it as far as you can and walk, I hate dings. You will have nice time here and I will be back.

Great food and view

By ArlingtonNOVA |

We hesitated to go because they do not take reservations, but we were quickly seated for lunch on a weekday. The food and view were great.

A great location on the beach with very good seafood

By BT20812 |

We arrived for a late lunch. The restaurant was not very busy, which was good. The service was excellent and the food very good. We always try to enjoy a meal here when we are in town.

Beautiful location, not great calamari!

By Arf42 |

Went on a recommendation of a friend, but was underwhelmed. Went for sunset which was beautiful and had drinks, calamari and sourdough bread. Bread was great! Calamari was overcooked, cold and tasteless. Drinks were fine. Did really like the bartender! He was very nice and entertaining with all sorts of information on what to do in the area. Talking to him made the experience. Also a $10 parking charge!!! Seriously they can’t validate? Would not recommend unless they improve food

Great food, pretty penny.

By heather m |

The gentleman that greeted us and called us family was great! He was very welcoming and accommodated our request for a window table. Waiter was great, attentive and made nice recommendations. The food was delicious and fresh! The only reason for the 4 star instead of 5 is the price. We're more than happy to pay for a good meal but this was a bit excessive. $300 (including tip) for 3 adults and 1 child.... and our orders weren't extravagant. But, service was great and food was delicious, so overall we left happy.

Signature Dish Soggy??

By ccinchico |

Day at the beach with family, fun and food. Strong marks for location, view and immediate seating on the patio with three dogs. Great way to start! Quick friendly service. Our server, Heidi got our drinks to us quickly. They were all super tasty. Our orders consisted of starters of sour dough bread and chips and salsa & guac. Meals of a burger; big, cooked to perfection and nice amount of fries. Shrimp/crab louie was generous, big fresh shrimps and crab. Real crab. Shrimp tacos were a little under spiced but good nonetheless. Finally was the Fish and Chips. The fish was cooked with breading but it was so soggy that you could not even pick it up or eat it with a fork. It was greasy and limp. One could not eat it. Our server Hiedi, never asked about why the fish was not eaten? Even when asking if we needed a box. Finally we brought it to her attention. She agreed this is not what it should be!! Said that is not what it usually is. That being said we were not asked if we could take that off your check. When receiving the bill, it was not mentioned either nor was it taken off. Not even a mention!! When one can see the food was uneatable you would of thought it would of been compensated for but no. It was a lovely day for Gladstones. Perfect weather...but a HUGE disappointment for a restaurant known for their sea food to not be able to serve a semi decent Fish and Chips!!

100% Markup for the location

By Traveler2504 |

Great beach-side location, dining on the patio overlooking the ocean. Decent but not amazing service, nice interior, good for groups and celebrations. Food is not the highlight. Cost is double what the food is worth because of the location and I'm told this is the most profitable of this restaurants chain - for a reason. Parking is easy but not cheap, there is very limited free parking anywhere close. Pay a tiny bit more for your meal and go to much better restaurants further north on the Pacific Coast Highway. Or buy a takeout nearby and picnic on the beach.

Great View with Great Food

By Ian D |

There is nothing better than having lunch on the beach without the sand! Gladstone's, where Sunset meets PCH is a great place to take my friend on her first trip to California. The food is much better than most places on the beaches of California. The ingredients are fresh and prepared well. The staff are very friendly. And the view is fantastic!

If you didn't enjoy this place, you must have been mean to the help

By Nancy D |

Fabulous Shrimp Louis salad in a gorgeous setting with cheerful servers who bent over backwards to help us. Gorgeous view. What more can you ask?

No Weekend Wait and a Luscious Lobster Roll

By HBSnowFlower |

Last Saturday after hiking at Will Rogers park, we were stoked to pull off PCH and find there was no wait to be seated at this beautiful ocean-front hot spot. The friendly masked-up staff, taking all COVID precautions, took us to our outdoor, shaded table, and brought drinks within minutes. I was in heaven, digging into a succulent, generous lobster roll, with the best, fresh, French fries I’ve had in a long time. My husband’s seafood salad with giant shrimp was gorgeous and delicious too. What a great treat.

THE VIEW AND SURROUNDINGS WAS WORTH IT, FOOD WAS GOOD

By Marshall I |

This is a very special place, right on the Pacific. Watch the Surfers... Food was good and appetizers and dessert was AWESOME.. Right at Santa Monica and PCH. If you are there, try it.

Valet park your car & sit on the ocean side to enjoy the sunset, the water and the sky! We arrived 20 minutes before closing and they allowed us to come in & dine. The service was excellent. I highly recommend it!

If you like an ocean view this is for you

Great Malibu ocean view. Food was very good, ahi tuna sandwich and fish and chips. Service was very good. For the price the drinks were a disappointment. Get a ten spot out for parking. Would try some other places before going back.

Wonderful experience, top to bottom

By buck000ta |

About 10 of us visited Gladstones on 28 December. After a short wait, we were taken to our table. The food that I tasted was wonderful. The clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl was absolutely delicious: wonderfully creamy, with a LOT of clams. My Ahi sandwich was also fantastic, as was the accompanying little garden salad with vinaigrette. I also grabbed a taste of some roasted brussel sprouts, lobster mac & cheese, and linguini with creamy clam sauce, and they were very good, too. Vincent, our waiter, was superb. He was friendly, very efficient, and made excellent suggestions for food and beer. He is a credit to the restaurant. Even the valet parking folks were friendly and efficient. All in all a wonderful experience, right on the beach.

Seafood? Oh yeah!

By LaModena |

Great atmosphere, service and food was very good. We had a blast devouring a seafood platter! Lots of fun! Location is perfect to watch the sunset. Parking not bad, $11 but they don't validate. Sourdough bread was good, butter could've come a bit softer, but still ok. Pics credit : LCA.

On the Beach; Good Service; But Food Disappointing

By HockeyJudge |

Salty soup and fish and chips that were iffy at best spoiled a very beautiful view and excellent service. Would not return, but its a shame, because the location is excellent.

Terrible eats

By s d |

Terrible terrible food! Drinks only with ocean view. Tasteless lobster roll, old hard fries, Watered down…undrinkable Arnold Palmer drink. (25 years ago had good food)

It's OK

By Wineaux FromAlexandria |

Got'ta say ... a bit underwhelmed by this restaurant. It's nice but nothing spectactular, expecially given that it is fairly pricey. And, there menu is fairly limited. The food is good. The staff great. There is a charge for parking.

The worst fish and chips I've ever had

By Quest617537 |

Gladstones looks great on it's website, so when we were in Malibu recently thought we'd try it out. Sincerely wish I hadn't, thinking about it, it was a Friday night and it was empty, a few people scattered about- obviously not a popular place. We started with the chowder and my wife had the crabcakes, neither were very good - the chowder was very thick and lumpy, my wife ate the crabcakes and said they were ok ( the appetizers should of waved a red flag, and not order mains). I ordered the fish and chips and my wife ordered the shrimp tacos. When the food arrived the waiters put the food down and made a swift exit, not asking if we wanted any condiments or anything, didn't come back to ask if everything was ok, only saw them again when I asked for the bill. My fish seriously looked like a battered sausage (3 of them), and tasted awful. My wife's shrimp tacos looked ok but again she didn't like them and pushed her plate away, after a few attempts to eat it. The drinks were ok and there are views (on a positive) and the place itself is looking very run down, the window frame next to us, had a loose pane of glass, the glass had sunk into the lower part of the frame leaving a gap at the top between glass and frame. Could help but notice as I was gazing out to beach/ocean. My advice would be go somewhere else (Dukes is a very good restaurant-only a few miles further up the coastline) and give this place a miss

Go for the View

By TheFunFoodie |

The view here of the ocean and sunset is like no other. The service is so so. The food is good but not great. I do love their brownie sundae. Also it’s cute how they wrap your to go food in the shape of foil animals. Again, the view is amazing.

Visit before they close

By lisapF1459DM |

This PCH has been here forever unfortunately they will be closing their doors sometime after October. The cucumber martini was amazing and yummy. The clam chowder was thick and plentiful. I don't like watery soup. The Fish tacos were amazing. Visit this place for a romantic lunch or dinner and walk the beach after before this place closes their doors.

Awful. Awful. Awful. Found out later it's about to close !! The service was horrible not even crowded for a Friday night

Sadstones. Not what it was 20 years ago

By food e |

Went back after 20 years but did not like it at all. Sorry. .... Place.is filthy rusted and not clean. Wife kept spiting put shell shards and fragments from linguini and clams. Sauce kooked grey, over salted dish dangerous and inedible. My fish stew awful my ahi was cold. Table was gross place was dirty and nasty. Service horrible better service at chick filet. Homeless and beggars in the parking ares. Graffitied and nasty.Fixtures and furnishing need to be replaced. So sad. I can't imagine why anyone enjoys this at 50 $ pp. 11$ parking no valet. Go to maestros or moon or dukes. This one u need to avoid. Not worth it for us. So sad a need to improve. Worst food we had in years.

Great ceviche

By Ryder’sleash |

My sister flew in from Georgia and I couldn't resist stopping at Gladstone for lunch. Not only is the ocean view amazing the ceviche was fantastic as well as the Prawns, seared Ahi, and fish & chips. The service is always top notch and I've never been disappointed in the seafood choices.

Happy Birthday Sis!

By StThomas’ Child |

We had not been to this restaurant since we were kids. So this was nostalgic moment. The host who served our table was excellent. There were assortments of daily catch, and unique menu items. We had Red fish baked, Fish and Chips, crab mac and cheese, and salmon. The fresh catch comes with cold slaw which was good and one side: we had baked potatoes, Brussel Sprouts, and french fries. The restaurant was not crowded which was not how I remembered and it was the Saturday before a holiday. The view was priceless. Meals start around $30.00 but can go up well over $100.00 for those who are new to the city and you want to compare. Parking is $11.00 and valet. No street parking. We had a nice time.

Pricey, but Well Prepared Food

By briskwalkers |

Gladstones has been a fixture for culinary epicureans since 1972, on the corner of Sunset and Pacific Coast Highway. In fact they are right on the ocean, and if you feel a bit guilty after the meal, you can stroll down to the beach! Known for its fresh seafood, it also offers a spectacular view of the Santa Monica bay and the always sunny and cheerful Malibu coast. We tried the Fish and chips, the Angus hamburger and the Crab cake. They were all delicious, full of rippling flavor and worth the bit of extra price they charge compared to others. The Fish and chips was very succulent and crisp. Also try their whole fried Branzino, a slivery salt-water fish that has sliver skin and awesome taste--thought a bit on the chewy side. Gladstones also has an outstanding wine and beer list. Their Mohito to be outstanding--specially the Dragonberry version. Because we favor locals, I tried their Santa Monica Bay Extra Pale ale, which is excellent and kind of medium-bodied. In the whites, I would try the Maso Canali Pino Grigio a light fruity wine ideal for summer and the beach. Did not try desserts, but friends tell us the Chocolate cake and the Banana Split are out of this planet.

Best view in Malibu

By elklix |

If you want to have excellent seafood and drinks with an amazing oceanview this is the place. The service is very good too.

On the beach; good & pricey food and parking

By ItchyFeet |

When we got there we found out the parking is $10! The restaurant itself is large with great large outdoor deck areas, a large indoor area, bar and separate area for private functions. The views of the ocean are 2nd to none; we just hanged out on the deck for a couple hours for lunch and sun. We had a fish dish and chowder/salad. The food and service were both very good but the prices are insanely high! If you are prepared to spend some money then I would recommend this place.

A Vacation Treat

By Mike B |

Because it was late October we reserved an early time so we could enjoy the view in daylight. A benefit of that was that we scored a window side table. It made for a memorable vacation experience. The food here was outstanding. I had the lobster mac and cheese, my wife had salmon. I LOVED the mac and cheese, which had delicious cheese and flavorful, fresh tasting lobster in sizable chunks. My wife was happy with her salmon and baked potato. The bartender made a perfect old fashioned cocktail. Comfortable room, courteous professional service. You do have to pay for parking, though.

Thanks Labor Day

By guseboy |

The family and I decided to take a drive down PCH on Labor Day and we ran into Gladstone’s. This place hasn’t changed over the years, great views and great food. We had to wait a little but we were seated on the patio over looking the Pacific Ocean. We ordered some cocktails with a Lobster Roll and Oysters, incredible! I highly recommend this place if you want a view and food, the only thing is $$$ and valet parking is $11. Enjoy!

Meal Not as Good This Time

By NESteven |

We ate here for lunch 10 years ago after attending the Rose Parade. We had a great meal that day. This time it was expensive and not great. The clam chowder and the Throwback IPA were very good. The shrimp crab louie salad was only OK. The service was not attentive. We had to ask twice for silverware and napkins. Parking was $11. I gave the attendant $20 and he only gave me $8 in return. The ocean view was outstanding.

great location but horrible service and expensive, mediocre food

By Greg S |

My two kids and I made our yearly trek to Gladstones Malibu on 7-27-22. The mandatory valet to park yourself cost us $11 (no validation), and lunch was $145.00 (plus tip for poor service). The food was mediocre and very expensive ($50 for fried appetizer to start). Although the atmosphere and views were breathtaking, the food and service was poor. We will rethink our yearly trip and meal at Gladstone's.

Amazing views and good food

By Darren J |

This is the second time that I've been here and it never disappoints. The waitress we had was so nice and accommodating. Food is great and I highly recommend you book a book inside by the window. It's right on the ocean. If you're visiting I highly recommend it.

Great views, food & service.

By Kari J |

We had a really nice dinner. Enjoyed the scenery. We had great service and the fox was really good. I would recommend sitting outside if the weather is nice well worth it.

We wanted to love this place again

By icingontop1 |

Bottom line —-The food was okay and service subpar. First, the good: the clam chowder was delicious as was the sourdough bread. (Although, the butter they serve the bread with is very salty.) Now, for the rest: I expect to pay to park in LA but when you are parking at a restaurant and spending hundreds of dollars, why? The chips served with the ceviche were stale and the quality of the seafood in the tower was mediocre. Our server, Isaac, was always disappearing. Any time we needed him, he was no where to be found. Providing a fun or enjoyable experience with great service is not his goal. Honestly, he couldn’t be bothered with truly serving- he left 80% of the job up to the bussers. So, they should be getting the majority of the tip. Unfortunately I know this isn’t a reality. The outdoor seating area is a mess. Broken umbrellas, poles that haven’t been wiped down, rust creeping through the paint on the glass wind breaker. Where is the manager? Doesn’t seem like anyone cares but the guy who wrapped our chocolate cake in foil and made a dolphin out of it. At the end of our meal, a sewage smell came wafting across our table. No more needs to be said about that. Before today, we had not been to Gladstones in 29 years. It will probably take that long for us to forget and go back.

Amazing venue , average service, expensive parking

By chrlise |

This place is quite pricy for the food served. But this is not a place where the food is the main focus. Sitting on the patio listening to the waves rolling in while indulging in well prepared American comfort seafood is the reason I brought my wife here for Sunday brunch. The food was tasty but the walk on the beach after the brunch was the reason why the 30 mile trip was worth taking. I’ll definitely come back again, but next time for dinner though to try out their catch of the day.

Good ocean view and thats it

By james g |

Drove here with buddy who last went 30 years ago. I agree with all the view is sensational and I stop there. Vast car park but they charge 10 bucks. Place was empty at lunchtime...ok was a grey Monday. Place looks probably like it was 30 years ago and food is def unchanged. I ordered fish and chips and it arrived soggy batter, not a decent fillet but goujon like.....fish was not top notch so forth..left most of it. The server did not comment when I said food was not good..normally they enquire why or try and help.....my buddy loved his pasta with prawns..looked like a New Jersey diner special. Dreadful dated place avoid

Great location with fresh seafood

By 1879fulham |

In a perfect location Gladstone’s is a great LA institution. I have been coming here on and off for 20+ years. The first few visits were very memorable and then the last time I visited which would have been around 3 years ago everything had changed. It was overcrowded, food was very average and the service was poor. Everything that was good had changed hence why I never returned for a long time until yesterday. I am glad I came back. It was a beautiful day whilst the restaurant was overcrowded with cyclists the staff were very friendly and accommodating . and found my group a nice outside table. Drinks were served quickly and we ordered a few appetisers. The crab cakes were great and really seasoned. The dozen oysters in shallot vinegar were also great and disappeared very quickly as did the calamari and the house fries. All in all a very enjoyable lunch. This restaurant seems to be back on track so I am happy to reconnect with it on a regular basis. Very much recommend you try.

Never got our food!

By MichaelKohn1 |

Got in quickly and valet was fine. We ordered our lunch quickly as the place started to get busy. We got our clam chowder (excellent) and shrimp salad. Our waiter kept stopping by to tell us our food was on the way. Fish tacos and crab cakes never arrived. He insisted our order was up but alas, our food never came. So sad.

Great service, views, food!

By joes1914 |

Went there for late lunch- a little apprehensive about sitting outside on their patio. But, we were seated inside, next to big picture window, with dramatic views of the ocean and beach. Service was great, enjoyed their famous clam chowder. Decided on fish tacos. Not disappointed in the least. A very good dining experience.

Sunset Dinner Sensation

By Jeff A |

A wonderful and casual choice for dinner if you are in the area. Great sunset views and nice menu. Specialty of seafood but they have other dishes too. We started with tuna tartar which was delicious and the portion was very generous. We both had the 9oz filet for dinner.

Iconic Gladstones Has Seen Better Days but Still Manages to Please

By Mark H |

I remember when Gladstones opened in the early eighties. I was living in Santa Monica at the time, and a trip to Gladstones on a sunny So Cal day became standard weekend fare for my friends and our dates. I recall many a great time sipping beer and enjoying the incredible clam chowder with sour dough bread. They say you can't go back, or maybe you should not. On a visit to So Cal, I revisited Gladstones for the first time in decades. It is a little worn and the food seems to have lost a bit of its edge, but the magic of beach and sunshine still cut through. For starters, I had a cup of the Manhattan fish soup and my wife had the New England clam chowder. Both were good, but not as rich as the versions inhabiting by memories. I moved on to the fish tacos, which were a bit of a disappointment. Deep fried, they would have been better grilled, and the chips were noticeably, both visually and by taste, greasy. The accompanying guac was a redeeming grace. Also, the wine selection was limited and the service flawed, but the warm beach sun and memories left me smiling. You can go back, just be prepared that it won't be the same. Final thought, there are moderately priced menu items, but others are quite pricey. So, if you are on a budget, choose carefully.

Dine with an ocean view

By Emma L |

Popped in for dinner just as the sun was setting- tourist-style restaurant with a location that is 100% amazing for this time of day. Food was ok- expected a little more for the price (also $10 to park in the beach lot). Great fries, salmon cooked well, tasty pesto side (very garlicky), but coleslaw needed to be fresh (tasted a little old). Great service from my waiter, and the sun did a magic job to finish the day with brilliant colours. The view!

Gladstones Oct 2017

By Gary_Val_AZ |

We stopped in on a Sunday late afternoon while cruising up PC Hwy for dinner. Pulled into the parking area and it's only valet for $12 bucks. Ok no prob, the beach area was pretty crowded so it put us right up next to the restaurant. We got seated right away. The view from our table was really nice of the ocean. We got service right away from our waitress Heidi. She was fantastic! Got our drinks right away and she took our food order. The food was a little pricey but it's well worth it! I highly recommend this restaurant. Enjoy the atmosphere! Will visit again next time we're in the area.

Missing the Crowds

By Kind Traveler |

I have been a fan of Gladstones for 30+ years, way back when part of the atmosphere included dropping peanut shells on the bar floor and waiting an hour for a table by the window. The food has remained delicious, and the location can't be beat. I moved out of California, but when I am in town I like to drop by Gladstones. I was stunned the other Saturday night when the restaurant had very few customers. We walked right in with a party of 5 and immediately got seated by the window. The menu had fewer items than I remember, but everything that my friends and I ordered was as large, beautifully prepared and delicious as ever. I hope that Gladstones is still popular and going strong. If you haven't checked out Gladstones for fresh seafood, you might like giving it a try!

Great Views!

You will enjoy wonderful views of the ocean here. I had some calamari as a quick snack. It was a little dried out but was okay. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the views.

Great atmosphere, amazing dinner

By DeWayne H |

We had an amazing dinner at Gladstone's. They had a great variety of dinner items and appetizers which we heartily enjoyed as we were surrounded by the beauty of the Malibu beach. I had the marinated Ribeye which was one of the best steaks I've had lately, and the twice-baked potato that came with it was the icing on the cake. So good!

Great location in Malibu. Directly on the beach. Great view at sunset. Especially on the terrace. Food: Pasta with clams => very good Fried calamari=> standard Banana Split=> huge, very good Price range: In general a higher price level. Depends on the meal you select. Pasta with clams at 30 USD (a bit overpriced), Calamari (15 USD, ok), Banana Split (11 USD; ok). Parking: 10 USD should be cheaper for guests

Seafood restaurant on Will Roger’s State Park Los Angeles, California

By George700East |

The restaurant is located at the end of Sunset Boulevard and the Pacific Coast Highway. The restaurant shares a parking lot with the Will Rogers State Park. They’re plenty of parking spaces and the fee for dinner was only five dollars for parking. The restaurant has extensive seafood, menu and various of the meats and vegetables. A loaf of bread and butter is available at a nominal price. The price is for the meals were moderate the dishes. Served were very good. The service was really good. The restaurant has a full bar. On the outside dining is available at the restaurant. In the evening, the temperature drops and his little cool sitting outside. The restaurant has heat lamps at all the tables. It is recommended that you wear a sweater or jacket if you’re dining in the evenings. If you’re driving northbound, you’ll have to make a left turn into the restaurant parking lot therefore it is recommended that you stay in the left lane a few blocks before the restaurant.

Excellent food, friendly service and a very relaxed setting.

By Richard B |

A group of us met there recently for lunch, on a Saturday. There were 16 of us, and we'd arrived from various parts of the country, so our arrival times were spread over an hour and a half. At no point did anybody give us the impression that they needed us to get a move on, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, without being in the least bit overbearing. The fish that I had was excellent, although the sweet potato fries were slightly over cooked. But the fish, really good. Not the cheapest lunch that you'll have, but my meal was worth it. Oh, and the coffee was pretty good too. . .

Best clam chowder ever

Haven't been here in years but only because I no longer live in CA. Just had to stop in for the chowder. It's so much better than what I got on the East Coast last year.

Sadstones

By Nadine |

Big disappointment. Growing up in L.A. I assumed Gladstones would be awesome, somehow I had never eaten there before. I moved to palm springs awhile ago and was staying at the Serra Retreat with a group of ladies. Two of them wanted to go to Gladstones and I figured it was time I go too. Our experience: The hostess: Not a smile. No greeting. Just me letting her know we had a reservation and her asking me to repeat my name 3 times. Odd "service" for what I thought was a good restaurant at that point. The server: She came to our table so few times we almost forgot what she looked like. I ordered and went to the bathroom. When I came back my friends told me they had changed their minds about the steak because the server "Steared them away from it because it is not very good". Red flag! We should've left right then. Water glasses on this hot day got refilled once. Extra items we needed we had to wait a very long time for. A VERY long time. The other servers seemed just as disinterested and lackluster. No manager was seen at any point. Salmon and baked potato: $30 salmon was not as fresh as expected, slightly fishy. It wasn't overcooked. The potato came with a mixture if bacon, sour cream and cheese in it and looked like throw up. Seriously. I expected this $9 potato to be like those amazing salt encrusted ones at a steakhouse. It was listed as a Kennebec potato. It was burned on the outside and looked like it was a leftover from yesterday once I really opened it up. Clam chowder: $10 Glue with rubber bands is all I can say. . Crab cakes: $20 They were gummy and were sent back. Fish and chips: Incredibly greasy. Hard (not crispy) batter. The fries tasted like they were old fries, refried. My friend asked for fresh fries. A new plate finally arrived and there was no improvement. They tried to charge her $9 for them. Parking: The final insult was having to pay $11 for parking after paying $126 for an absolutely horrible meal with terrible service. So sad that this iconic restaurant has declined so badly. Worst disaster at sea since the Titanic. It is indeed a sinking ship and should be renamed "Sadstones".

Romantic, relaxing & fun

By Maia B |

My husband and i wandered in after watching the sunset from the cliffs a few years ago. Now when we go to LA for business we make it a point to pop in for a meal. We sat oceanside which was both romatic & relaxing. hearing the lap of the waves while chatting was so peaceful. Our meals are always excellent. Great presentation & cooked to perfection with just the right amount of seasoning. I usually order one of their fish entrees (tuna/bronzino from the main dinner menu) and sometimes a special. The salads are filling & very tasty. Lunches have been consistently good also. Our little boy loves it here too.

What a meal, what a view!

By GBWeible |

This was our first stop on our week long visit to California over spring break! All of the food was amazing. And the view! Wow. We took a nice walk along the beach while waiting for our table. What an overall lovely experience. Service was great, wait was short. Overall a great experience! Well worth the stop. Be aware - it is an expensive meal.

Iconic beachfront landmark located on PCH. We requested a table by the window so we could watch the sunset and the waves roll in. The seafood is so fresh it is plucked right from the ocean you are overlooking. I decided on the linguine and clams which was a recommendation from our friendly server. Excellent recommendation! The pasta was cooked perfectly and the clams were tender. Gladstones is a rather large nautical themed restaurant with outdoor, indoor and bar seating. Portions are generous so when you have leftovers your server will wrap them up in an aluminum foil sculpture. Parking is paid valet only. After dinner you can take a stroll on the white sandy beach and dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean. We were sad to learn that they will be closing the restaurant when the lease is up later this year. They have been in business for over 44 years. I’m glad I got a chance to eat here before it closes.

I place you gotta see!

By FundDude |

Quaint old LA legend. The food was good. The service was good. Unfortunately, we got there too late for Sunset, but hope to be there for that another time. This is just one of those places you have to see. It does seem that its Heyday has come and gone, but I still recommend you give it a try.

Samelloa

Both my husband and I got food poisioning eight hours after consuming crab cakes and fish tacos. HORRIBLE service. If you want a sea side view, bring a picnic basket with your own food.

Great lunch & service

By MEBX5 |

Stopped here for lunch on the way to Santa Monica, great views of beach and sea, had a fantastic lunch with great service. Would definitely go back if in the area.

Great St. Valentine's Day Dinners

By Ken T |

We went to Gladstones in the late afternoon, arriving about half an hour before sunset. We started with ceviche and shrimp cocktails, followed by traditional (cod) fish and chips. We asked for extra spicy Bloody Maria's (bloody Mary with tequila) and that was great as well. The cod was cooked to perfection.

Throwback seaside dining

Great seafood. A throwback on the water. Great ocean views. Definitely take advantage of the outdoor seating.

Lunch by the beach

By BPenuliar2015 |

A friend recommended Gladstone’s. It’s a restaurant by the beach. Once you get to their location, follow the signs- turn right then left and there’s valet parking. We ordered the Mac and cheese and fish tacos. It’s a little bit on the pricey side but I guess one is paying for the view.

Great Location Right on the Beach

By evaready |

We went as soon as it opened up, at 11:00AM. The food is excellent, especially the sourdough bread service & the shrimp cocktail. The drinks were good, too. Some of the entrees are pricey but there are some items on the menu that don't break the bank.

Disappointed

By Steve Miller |

Back in 1999, this place had ambience and there was always a wait to get seated. We sat inside, little to no decor, tight booth seating, calamari was quite tough and the lobster was impossible to crack into. Everything else was good but this is not the Gladstones I remember. Unfortunately next time we’ll try Moonshadows or Dukes. I miss my ‘old” Gladstones!

Beautiful lunch

By Pat W |

We went for an early lunch and arrived just after they opened. We had our choice of tables on the patio. We ordered the tacos appetizer to share. They were wonderful! Very tasty fish on the freshest white flour tortilla with the crunch of cabbage a little pico de gallo. For drinks we had Long Island iced tea and blackberry margarita (fresh muddled berries). Both very good. Our entrees were the lobster roll (renewed my faith in lobster) and crab cake sandwich, that came with chips and fries respectively. While we shouldn't have we had the brownie and ice cream dessert (for 6). So we took most of the brownie and crab sandwich home for later. Great food, better view (we saw Dolphins) made it a great treat lunch!

One of my favorite fish restaurants in Southern California

By Stuart S |

Gladstones 4 Fish in a Southern California institution. A true destination restaurant. The place is huge and located right on the ocean. Many days you can watch the seals playing from you table or you can venture down onto the beach. The food is solid and reasonably priced, great for the entire family.

Let down

By Wilkie87 |

I went here with my sister and some friends after all the hype and I have to say I was very let down. The menu wasn't very clear so my sister had to send her dish back as there were things on her fish like cream and breadcrumbs that wasn't stated on the menu and she can't eat that. my fish tacos were really flavourless and just a plate of beige food. the fish was fresh but seriously 0 flavour. the location is out of this world. the cocktails were nice and the server was great The toilets stank and were dirty....seriously need upgrading so disappointed as for the price and location...we were expecting wonderful things but my dish was so.......just....rubbish and bland. Shocked to be honest. very different to how my sister remembers it...she lives in LA and I am visiting from UK Defo go to sit outside for a cocktail but won't be returning for food unless a huge change happens

Great food done well

By MrLeeL |

They are extremely competent in their presentation of seafood. They stay away from the fryer and that is commendable. They rival the Cape Cod MA seafood establishments, despite their apparent chain focus.

Glad to go to Gladstones!

By Michelle H |

Great views, service, and food! Had a memorable experience with my sisters. Amazing Brussels sprouts, ahi tuna salad and brownie sundae.

Expensive but with great ocean views, good food and service

By AuntTink |

Sat outside overlooking the ocean and the beach. I did like that no one rushed us to move the table and service was good. Prices a bit on the high side but I find that true when you get good views. The salmon was good. The roasted Brussels sprout were wonderful. The chocolate cake was so enormous that 3 could share. A regular comfortable standby!!

Great location, decent food

By James L |

A great location where you can enjoy a right on the ocean view while dining plus you can access the beach afterwards. Food is decent- really enjoyed the clam chowder which was flavorful and laden with clams. Get their sourdough loaf which compliments the chowder nicely (you also have the option of getting it in a sourdough bowl as well). The linguine with clams may be a bit spicy for some but I liked it. Wife had the spice crusted ahi which wasn't bad albeit not great. Service was quite good too.

Great Views nice setting and good food

By Kenneth K |

My friend Larry lives in LA so when we went on vacation to California he suggested this place for dinner because of the ocean views and the food. It was a really good choice. We had a large variety of food, a seafood platter for our group of 6. Then we ordered the main courses. I got the spice crusted ahi and was very happy. We saw that at another table someone was taking something to go and they do a really fancy package for your to go package. this night they looked liked golden dinosaurs and so of course one of us asked for some food to go just to get the sculpture. I would recommend this place with no hesitation at all. Come and enjoy the food and the ocean views.

What a view!

By pasoduo |

We have been to Gladstones when I was a teen 2 years after it opened in 1972. We finally got to return to it in August of 2017. The outside dinning area is wonderful and,as it can only happen in California, free to use even if you do not want to eat at Gladstones. But what a waste of space!: the food at Gladstones is wonderful. The oysters were fresh and yummy and the fish and chips were light and fluffy. The burger was huge and perfect. The inside is as it has always been, with wonderful views.

Lunch with a view

By katycarey |

I like the one in Long Beach and that one too Catch of the day was fresh mahi mahi, I loved my ahi tuna so well done to perfection. You have to pay parking valet only for $11, but we are in Malibu after all. My husband said his clam chowder excellent.

Amazing meal, better view

By tnbelle2016 |

First taste of California cuisine did not disappoint. Visiting family recommended this jewel of a place on the coast. Very busy on a Thursday lunch. Excellent calimari to start, crab cakes, and why not end with cheesecake. Can't wait to come back!

No me gustó

By Camila R |

Gladstones has a great ocean view, but that’s about it. The food is overpriced and underwhelming, with bland flavors and mediocre quality. Service is hit or miss, often slow and inattentive. You’re mostly paying for the location, not the experience. Definitely not worth the hype.

It's the location w/ocean view. Costly parking. Average food (seafood, seafood, seafood) and drink. A hit with tourists.

By ChrisinSOCA |

A good place to visit on rare occasion when friends or family come in from out of town. Nice oceanside spot (at PCH and Sunset Blvd.) where you can watch for dolphins and such. Parking is pricey as are the food and drinks. Food is average. BUT, they've been there for decades so someone likes the place a lot.

Still a classic!

By Frank W |

On the evening of our visit, the place was very slow. Probably due to the Dodgers playing in the World Series that night. We sat in a booth near the bar, and got excellent service from the bartender. Food was kind of nothing special, but the service was outstanding!

Beautiful location but pricey

By JimboMalibu_CA |

I met two business associates at the legendary Gladstone’s for lunch. This may be one of the last meals since there are plans to demo the building and redevelop the site. The food is ok, but expensive...clam chowder bread bowl $12, then there is the $10 valet fee (no validation). The location is spectacular right on beach, there are better alternatives.

Wow what terrible food

By Elizabeth L |

Went to Gladstone’s Malibu with friends last night Wednesday, October 24 The service was lovely everyone was really nice and the food was inedible. My mistake in not sending everything back to the kitchen, will not make that mistake again nor will I repeat Gladstone’s

Gladstones of Malibu

Malibu Gladstone's Restaurant offers seafood, fish, steaks, chicken and pastas. Food is excellent. Wonderful fine dining experience that is located along the Ocean. There is indoor and outdoor dining.

Best Restaurant in Malibu

By Zack S |

Absolute 10/10 experience, I was apprehensive initially eating here after reading previous reviews, however I found these mostly negative reviews to be off base. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and the location couldn't have been better. The service was extremely efficient. One of the best piña coladas I've had in my life. To be honest I wasn't expecting much from the food, but boy was I surprised. The burger was fantastic, chicken sandwich was delicious and the lobster roll was 2nd to none. If you are in the area you need to stop here. I am usually not one to leave reviews, but after reading the wildly inaccurate reviews of this place I couldn't stay silent. Easily one of the best meals I had on my trip. Perfection, no notes.

Anniversary

By fredrick0808 |

I went there with my wife for our wedding anniversary dinner. I hothead filet mignon and it was good and my wife had lobster risotto and she liked it. Our server was Bobby and he was good. The sunset that evening was beautiful . We also saw a pod of dolphins playing in ocean and that was cool

Lost its luster

By RuRuRoams |

We came in, with memories of long-ago previous visits dancing in our heads. We happened to be in Malibu and talking about this restaurant and decided to go by, for old-time's sake. We, perhaps, should have realized it was a bad idea when we paid so much to park and then walked in to an almost-empty restaurant at 7:30 pm on a summer night. We ordered salads, chowder and drinks from a borderline surly waiter. Not sure why he was so unhappy, but maybe it's just because there wasn't a lot of business. The portions were large, but it almost felt like a Planet Hollywood or other tourist food experience and that's where we need to take responsibility. No excuse for the often-absent, seemingly bored and possibly annoyed older waiter, but our expectations were clearly off. We were expecting a lively, peanut-shell-covered floor, beach-shack experience and hadn't thought about how long it had been since we'd been there. If you're looking for a seaside restaurant not far from Santa Monica and the view is your goal, or you're a tourist looking for your PCH experience, you'll get a lot of food here and the prices are fair. If you order the chocolate cake you'll get a massive slab and if you don't finish it, they'll happily wrap it up in foil in the shape of a crab, lobster, whale or other whimsical ocean-themed shape. Which brings me to the highlight of an otherwise-disappointing visit: the man who made our foil whale, with a mermaid floating on the water spout, was a DELIGHT! He's worked there for DECADES, was friendly, helpful and the foil wrap was like ART! :) Because of him, we tipped generously and asked the server to share it with the artist. Consistent with his lackadaisical attitude from the rest of the meal, his acknowledgment of our request was muted and we don't know whether the extra money was given to the proper person. To be fair, the server did comp the cake because we were celebrating a birthday, but that was weird after being just not friendly and not around, despite the place being empty. Pro Tip: Always carry cash so you can personally hand it to the people who deserve it and not leave feeling bummed that a crappy waiter probably just received a stellar tip.

👍

The service and fold were great. It also had a wonderful view of the ocean. The fish tacos, shrimp tacos, clam chowder, and ceviche were great.

Wonderful memories, superb/stunning view, tolerable service and food

By Lauren B |

I had extraordinary souvenirs of the restaurant. Sadly, despite of announcing it was my birthday, service was slow and the food was marginal. I had to argue (a little) about the bill since they did not comp the free desert (as promised). Worth going for the view.

Fun seafood restaurant, outstanding location

By Tom M |

Gladstone's is a great place to bring visitors to the area. It's a nice casual seafood restaurant with a gorgeous view. Expect peanut shells on the floor, very good seafood, and a busy and fun atmosphere. Service is very good. Each visit is memorable.

Great food, outstanding service!

By Mario C |

Excellent place to close our visit to LA. Great food, amazing view, but the service was the best. Thanks Mr. Harris & team for such a great experience. We will definitely come back!

Beware

By JujuPatty |

The view is magnificent. The prices high but expected. The food is okay. However, my daughter had a wedge salad, and she definitely suffered food poison. Have a drink, enjoy the view, eat elsewhere is my advice.

Always a pleasure to eat here

By DonaldYokum |

Met an old friend for dinner at Gladstones, ordered the trout and was richly rewarded by a beautifully prepared fish and fresh asparagus. Good wine list, lovely oceanside setting, top notch service personnel, easy parking. This place is an institution, better go there soon, as it is losing its lease.

Fantastic food, among the best HWY 1 locations

By TonyFi18 |

While driving and experiencing the renowned California high way 1 you will get hungry. Gladstones offers fabulous food literally on the beach. Its divine. A world unto itself!

Beachfront restaurant with great food

By wetsuitdrymartini |

This restaurant is located on Pacific Coast Highway and at the end of Sunset Boulevard. This establishment offers function Facilities, main dining room and patio seating. Seafood tower is fresh and should be recommended. The food is good and the service is adequate

A beautiful ocean view with very disappointing food

By Stephen R |

My wife and I shared a mixed fried seafood platter which, at $35, was both overpriced and poorly executed. It consisted of fried cod, calamari, shrimp, and clams, as well as onion rings. Only the onion rings were acceptable. The clams were execrable—strips, rather than whole clams, and fried to a dark brown crisp—probably refried. Similarly, the shrimp were over cooked and probably frozen to begin with. The calamari were acceptable but with no real taste, and the dip for them was too sweet. The cod had a too-thick batter that came off when a piece was cut. We will say that the tartar sauce was good. Overall, it was a great disappointment as it was a destination restaurant for us.

Family Adventure

By Seirshalove727 |

Really great views and lovely service but the food was very mediocre. Not what we were expecting for the price or reputation. Best part was the kids having their leftovers wrapped up in animal shapes- dolphin and whale.

In any weather

By susan-lincoln |

Nice to have the option to sit outside or inside according to the weather of the day. We went twice during our trip and enjoy the patio on the warm day and an inside table on a windy day. Both for lunch. Fish tacos at just the right amount of spice. The hamburger full of flavor. Dining on the seashore can’t be beat.
