Good place for Sushi Had all kinds started with miso soup, nice salad ! Then a few different rolls ..Enjoyed eating here !

My Boyfriend and I drove by Godai and decided we needed to try it one of these days. Well good thing we did! Goro the owner is very personable, and Friendly. We tried a lunch combo that has 4 different good sized samples of Sushi rolls. Very filling and very affordable! You get a green salad with a delicious peanut dressing along with some delicious soup. There are so many rolls to choose from and other selections such as Teriyaki dishes. Big selection that will leave you satisfied! We've tried the A&M roll! Yummy! It has Shrimp Tempura, crab draped on the top of it with spicy sauce. It is really good! We also get Tuna and Salmon rolls! Everything is really Fresh and made to order! The place is always packed but we manage to get in and get a seat! If you Love Sushi and in San Antonio you need to try Godai!

I picked up take out here and we got two rolls and the spice up edamame. We had the Longhorn roll and the A&M roll. Big portions and high quality. The spicy edamame was delicious. All the staff was very friendly and I look forward to bringing my wife back there for a date.

We've been big fans of Godai since moving to San Antonio over 6 years ago. We've gotten to know Armando, a great waiter, but had someone else this past Friday for our celebratory dinner. The sushi is always fresh and the portions generous. We decided to order a couple of favorite rolls -- the Longhorn and Dragon roll, and then ventured out with 2 new rolls -- Cajun roll and Z-roll. The Cajun roll was as spicy as advertised but overly so with peppered rice -- we were thinking more spicy tuna/crawfish than pepper. The Longhorn was absolutely terrific. For the first time (think I've ordered the Dragon roll over 20 times), it was disappointing. The tempura soft shell crab must have been pre-fried and prepared well in advance, and it was not served warm nor did it have the crunch I love. The Z-roll was tasty and love those spicy crunch bits on top. My husband always orders the salmon eggs (uguri) and says they're nice and fresh. Finally (yes, we pig out when we're there but always bring some home for appetizers the next day) we always get the chicken fried rice as a side. What??? Too much rice -- never for a once a month meal, I say. The fried rice has nice tender big chunks of chicken with a mild flavor (missing some scallions this time) but a good compliment if you've had too much wasabi in your soy sauce. What I love about this place is they're always willing to substitute any type of fish into a roll. I'm not a big salmon fan, so I've subbed yellow tail or eel in a few rolls. The atmosphere is casual and only about 20 tables or so. After 7/7:30, expect a wait but you CAN make reservations. The sushi bar is two-tiered, so the visibility into the prep area is not that great and the eating depth is narrow but people look like they enjoy themselves there. And one last thing -- great wine menu, and of course saki and Japanese beers.

Best sushi in town! I have been here several times after the restaurant opened with new owners. It was good before and is great now. Fresh and delicious. Wait staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Quiet atmosphere which I love.

Love this restaurant the staff and the menu. My all time favorite is GODAI. The seafood and ingredients are always the freshest, the portions are very generous and Godai adds his special touches to the presentations which are simply devine, the best. Once you go to Godai, you'll never have any desire to go to another sushi restaurant because Godai is the best! I tend to favor the Mark's Special and the Yoga Shrimp but there's not a roll I've had that I don't love, the Longhorn, the Virgin, and so many others. And the staff is so welcoming and friendly, although busy, Godai tries to acknowledge his patrons whether they are entering or leaving his restaurant door. Feels nice, not only to be recognized but each time when they remember my choice in wine. And his wine selections is superb. Best sushi in and around town! And now my friends and family go as well. All ages, couples, kids and larger parties are welcomed anytime.

Missing the good sushi restaurants that I frequented in Los Angeles, after trying a few in San Antonio, I discovered this gem. The atmosphere, service and food was top notch. The owner and staff were very friendly and the service was great. Definitely will me making it a regular eating place.

Excellent place. Superb service. Kudos to Armondo. He was outstanding! The food was great. Salad and soup as soon as we sat down.

I've been eating at toros restaurants for most of 20 years and always found home to be reliably very good to excellent. But, no more! I went wth friends and family early in September and didn't recognize the place. On a Wednesday night the floor was dirty, some table left I completely bussed and the wait staff disinterested. The rolls were not up to his past standards, the sashimi only a faint ghost of his former offerings. I want and need Goro to be his formerly excellent self but on that Wednesday night he wasn't even up to zushi sushi.

The food is always great here, but the music sounds like a mix tape you made for your girlfriend from the 90's. Sounds from Boyz II Men, O-town, NSYNC & more will totally ruin the dining experience, but seriously some of the best sushi in SATX. Too bad someone has no taste for music.

We looked at reviews to find a nice sushi place while visiting the San Antonio area. The picture on the review looked nice and the food was rated highly. The picture on the review did not look anything like the actual place for the record. The servers were a bit rough and not very welcoming. They were busy, but borderline rude to us as we politely asked for water. I felt like we were imposing on them to eat there. On the positve side, our food came quickly and was all very good. Everything was very fresh. The maguro sushimi was not quite as high of quality as it should have been, so I would stay away from that, but otherwise good food. Not sure if I would go back though, as the attitude from the serving staff made it slighly unpleasant.

Been here a few times. The sushi is always awesome and the service is always great. Try the fried oreos.

As I have experienced sushi around the world I keep coming back to Godai and appreciate Goro's dedication to the craft and his freshness of fish. And the size of the sashimi can't be beat. We had the escolar, hamachi, and sake sashimi and they all taste like "butter" on the tongue. They also bring out a small Japanese salad and miso before your entree. Extra bonus for gratis. Huge selection of rolls. The Rainbow roll is so good. The Eve roll is chock full of fish without rice fillers. Goro doesn't skimp on the rolls either. Some people complain about the decor. I don't care about ti, I come for the food.

Now talk about sushi with a lasting impression. Best sushi in town. The tempura battered is the best! They start you off with Mizo soup and petite salad. It's perfection. Then they bring out your appetizers and sushi. I've had the entire menu. Really. I get something different everything and I have NEVER said I didn't like something. I always go with the hot green tea pot. It's the perfect ending to my meal. Enjoy this little spot and I am sure you'll be back too.

Very intimate dining area and the service is impeccable. The sushi can be a little fatty compared to what I'm accustomed, but overall very good.

Did we go to the same restaurant as the other people who put in reviews??? First of all, the interior was extremely dated, not sleek and modern. Our main issue was with the sushi itself. We ordered three rolls and specified light on the rice. The one roll clearly has much much more rice than fish. It reminded us of the sushi in Australia, and that is not a good thing. And if this is a longtime sushi restaurant, why can't the sushi chef cut the rolls into equal pieces? Isn't that the whole point?? The hostess offered to have the one roll remade, but we said no, take it off the bill. During our time in San Antonio, we went to a number of Asian restaurants. This one was a the bottom of the list for our trip. Just don't understand the rave reviews.

The sushi is awesome fresh & delicious. Prices are great. Tempura shrimp & veggies are also a must try. Very attractive lunch specials. Friendly & attentive staff. Will keep you coming back again & again.

Best Sushi and Japanese cuisine in San Antonio!

William is an artist with seafood. His restaurant is his workshop that creates masterpieces that are just not for eating but seeing. Great wine selection but be adventurous and ask for a recommendation because you won't be sorry. It may sound like a high end restaurant but made for the common walk in person. Sometimes it's hard to pick wine or beer because everything is available.

LOVED the hamachi and unagi nigiri! The Texas and Texas Tech rolls were huge and very good as well. Very fast service. We will definitely be back!!

The food is awesome, don't be fooled by the outside. Had the A&M roll and the scallop tower both were worth ordering again. Also had the chicken fried rice and it was a huge order and very good.

I’m gonna start this with a review of just the food, because being detailed about the horrific service will be lengthy. We went here as part of our tour of every sushi place in San Antonio. Fish was good, but not the best in my eyes. Mine had some tough bits unbefitting of salmon, but one of my companions remarked it was some of the best fish in the city, so I remain unsure. Rice was good but not great, as it was on the plainer side, but the taste itself was likable. For comparison, it’s better than Goro’s (more flavorful) and less polarizing than Niki’s Tokyo Inn (which I personally didn’t care for due to the heavy use of vinegar, an opinion not shared by everyone). All in all good sushi on the higher end of SA’s offerings, but Uni’Ko’s at La Cantera is superior in about every way. Notably it came out very swiftly as well. Service was quite poor throughout, then got shockingly bad at the end. For context: we’re a group of four and admittedly a somewhat annoying one. Can be rather boisterous, but we tip well to make up for it. The gentleman refilling waters was nice but the waitress left something to be desired. She was inattentive— we saw the man with water more often— and made no efforts to seem friendly or converse, but on a macro scale this was fine, since our interactions were so brief that we barely noticed. This was my least favorite service experience out of places like Goro’s, Uni’Ko, Niki’s, Yellowtail, etc. Things took a turn for the worse at the end though. While paying, one of my companions made a “keep the change” joke knowing it was mere cents and intending to add the rest afterwards like normal. Yes, this was a terrible joke and in poor taste, but I imagine it could have been handled better. Instead, the waitress presumably complained to the manager or another waitress, who when bringing back the checks commented “this is not a tip, you need to tip.” We know that the restaurant industry thrives on paying staff less than minimum wage, expecting customers to make up for their inability to pay employees. In the US service staff can be paid as low as $2.13 an hour if, with tips, it meets minimum wage. So we usually tip well, especially if service was kind. It was not, though, and being told to tip is painfully rude. I slashed my tip to just 20%, which another one of my party did as well. The third left change and a gift card, while the last left like less than $2. I was none too pleased with this but could not talk them out of it since they were so upset at being told to tip. As we left the man with the waters waved us down to ask if we wanted the gift card. This is important because a couple minutes after one of us realized he left his sunglasses inside, ran back in, but was told they were not there and did not see them on the table. He checked with the rest of us and went back right in and asked again. The man asked the other employees and finally they pulled it out of a bag in the back. It is very difficult to imagine an innocuous reason for this. Especially when they asked whether we wanted one of the two unexpected items left behind. I want to think it was a lost and found bag but we were *explicitly informed* about the only other item. Were the circumstances different I would not be proud of the low tips from half the group, but in hindsight the I should not have tipped 20%. Moreover the other one who tipped 20% was the one who was falsely told that his sunglasses were not there. The last five minutes alone changed the experience from “meh” to abhorrent— not a single other sushi place in SA would treat customers so deeply unprofessionally. Speaking of unprofessional, I tried to come here early July, only to find a note on the door saying they were closed from June 30 to July 5. This information would have been nice to have on their website so that fewer people waste trips there. In the ten minutes I sat in the parking lot looking at other options we turned away two other cars who also did not know. Even if our service hadn’t been terrible though, Godai has nothing on Uni’Ko (be it food, service, or even setting) and it’s unlikely I would have come back anyway.

This was actually my first time having sushi, and it was a good place to break the ice. I actually really enjoyed it. There are so many options to choose from. And believe me, between the appetizers and the main course, you will get your money's worth of food and be full. The appetizers helped with the wait time of the food, which did not feel long at all. And if you go on the right day, you might even hear live music.

My wife and I sat at the sushi bar. Very good sushi, probably the best in town. I’ve eaten at most other sushi places and you can tell the difference here. Very fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. We got there at 5:00 on a Friday and they started filling up fast. It was a fairly busy when we left, with a few tables open. It was good enough that it would be worth the wait. Service was very good. I ordered three times and they took my order quickly and served quickly. No complaints from me, We will be going back again. We’ve got friends coming into town soon and we are going to take them. It’s not a fancy place so you can go as you are, casual is fine. They have wine and beer and we had some of each.

Had a great experience. Everything was fresh and the complimentary miso soup is a standout. We particularly like the Boston roll. Lost a dot for bland tempura - the crispy is right, but there's no flavor in the batter.

Godai is very good and you won't be disappointed with the food. I had the tempura plate and it was so much food, I only ate about half of it and had to take it home. My wife had the hamachi kama and said it was delicious.

I was craving for sashimi, and I did not want to drive far last night. I decided to give Godai a try. It was like 10' driving from my house. * Pros: 1. Close to my house 2. Easy to find parking 3. Have variety dishes 4. Friendly staff ( I think most staff are Mexican. I do not see any Japanese staff there). 4. Have a sushi bar, and cheap wine selections ( I think they inflated the price then do 40% off on Spur night on ALL bottle. It sounds fishy. What is the profit margin here? ) *Cons: 1. Overprice ($65 for sashimi of not very fresh, no taste, and no special fish-- very generic selections of fish) 2. No decorations of sashimi dish. In fact, the $65 sashimi dish was placed on a plastic color square dish. I felt like I was at Walmart! 3. "Longhorn" Sushi roll has too much of spicy mayo and crunch. It does not have authentic taste. 4. Seaweed salad was pre made, tasted like can food. In fact, seaweed salad pre made from Costco tasted better than this place. 5. Not the best neighborhood. The neighborhoods seems dirty, a weird looking store across the street. I would feel comfortable to go there if I was by myself. We walked out of two adult and 1 preschooler with a bill of $98. We did not have any alcoholic drink. I was disappointed and would not recommend to my friends and family. Eating sashimi is my passion ( more than just my favorite). I would rate this place as 3/10 as 10 is the best I have had for its authenticity.

The wine selection is so good and the food is so tasty you better make time to kill a couple of hours. You just don't eat but you savor everything that touches your lips. If the wine isn't on the list just ask he probably has a bottle of something somewhere. The food is as good as it looks. My wife loves the Ramen soup with pork, not greasy, and full of flavor. I usually have the Longhorn roll. The roll can be shared and will fill you up. Ap

My friends decided to treat me to my first taste of real sushi. They said best place to go was Godai. The waiter was extremely helpful with recommendations. The sushi presentation was picture perfect! The taste made me a sushi lover!

The restaurant is in a rough part of town and the building itself is old and dated. If you want to be generous, you can call it charming. Our waitress was very unprofessional and clearly annoyed that we entered her building. We felt we needed to order water and drinks at HER speed and rhythm. The also don't have a liquor license so we needed to change our minds, quickly as she grew clearly impatient with her. She also did not like where we pur one of our bags so she just kicked it (gently) under the table, without asking. A glass of some no name wine was $9 and a Kirin beer is $8.95. Outrageous pricing for a place like this. I then ordered two Paulaner Hefeweizen and she brought us two Flensburger Bier Hefeweizen. When I told her that that is not what we ordered, she became argumentative and told me that it is a Wheat beer too so it's the same. No I am sorry, no humbleness, just annoyance that she had to explain to the customer why he should just accept the beer he did not order. We waited 10 mins for a glass of wine for somebody else in the party and then we just left. I believe the sushi is very good, but not good enough to endure location, pricing and service. San Antonio has many, many other good sushi places.

I've been to a few places in sna and do far this place is great. I got the A&M roll amd is was prefect along with a squid salad. The portions were just right ans the salad was a generous amount.

Always great fresh sushi prepared with care and attention. The owner is almost always behind the bar making sushi and making sure that everything is done right.

This is an excellent Japanese and sushi restaurant. My wife and I have dined at dozens of sushi restaurants and both felt this place deserves an excellent rating. I often order a chirashi bowl (stylized sashimi over rice) and the one here may be the best I've ever had. The place is unpretentious, large, with a varied menu, good service, and very reasonable prices. I will definitely be dining there again.

Excellent selection on the menu. And the rolls are huge! The food is fresh and we experienced very good service. I now have a place to take my son when he comes home from college. Now HEB will be my back up quicky sushi fix. And good bye to all the other sushi restaurants here in S.A.

This was near our neighborhood so just stopped in on a whim and are we glad we did! What gorgeous presentation on the sushi and just as delicious. Very friendly staff, the sushi chefs are very engaging as they present their food as sustenance and art. If you like sushi, be sure to try this one.

My family and I went here for dinner on a Friday night. One nice feature was 40% off bottles of wine. The good news is that the hamachi sashimi was excellent and their sushi rolls were very good. My wife and I also liked their squid salad and cucumber salad. I cannot recommend the fried oysters - they were poor in quality. Only very small pieces of oyster with a majority of each small piece being breading. Their whole fried smelt were good, but I do not think I would get them again. All in all, a very good to excellent place for sushi. The cooked appetizers were average-at least the ones I ordered.

Was craving some sushi so I stopped in. The sushi was fresh and prepared in a very prompt manner. Quite extensive menu. The staff were really nice and helpful. If you love sushi, stop in and try it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Dropped in the other night and found this place to be packed. The inside reminded me of one of the many mom and pop style sushi houses in Japan. I believe it was the owner there that night and as we walked in he had a huge smile. He clearly loves his work. We were seated off to the side and the waitress wasted no time taking our drink orders and our appetizer request. The menu has a HUGE selection of different types of sushi rolls. They do have sashimi and some other non-fish Japanese dishes as well. The food was pretty good. Not quite as tasty as I expected but still pretty good. The servers did a fantastic job. The hot green tea is a winner. There is plenty of parking outside and there also appears to be an outdoor seating area but this particular evening was cool and misty. I will consider a return visit at a time that is not as busy and could have a chat with the sushi chef.

We've been stationed here in san antonio for 3 yrs and we've tried several sushi places and Godai has been one of the closest to authentic as you can get. The food is fresh and we always try something new from their menu plus you get a better deal for the price!

First impression put us off a bit. The appearance of the restaurant from the outside makes you think the place has been closed for quite a while. The restaurant may be the advertised best sushi in town but the owners don't know about lawn and parking lot maintenance!!! Don't be put off.... Venture further. The place is a surprise on the inside. Very clean and a bit upbeat. Menu is extensive and makes it difficult to decide. Whatever is selected will be a treat. Second rounds of main courses will be required because the fish is wonderful. Only drawback, had to request regular sow sauce because only low salt type is on the table. Service was really, really good and attentive. Wine specials are on a regular basis. Make the drive and enjoy Godzilla for lunch / dinner. You won't be disappointed!!!

Hidden gem in the castle hills neighborhood. Sushi is fresh with a great selection. Dinning room is tight on most nights but comfortable. They offer non fish choices ( beef/chicken) dishes in case not everyone in your party goes for raw fish. Overall great food and value.

This place has a huge variety of dishes and about 2-3 pages are sushi rolls. You will be able to find something you like for sure or you can always ask the chef for something special, they are very nice and welcoming. Prices are a little bit high but they include salad and soup with the roll. Make sure you try their spicy edamame, it is great! My recommendation is Longhorn roll and Ashley roll.

I attempt to go to Godai's at least once a week. Each and every time the food is amazing. I also try something new and have never been disappointment - with my something new I always get the Longhorn Roll - if you like pure goodness in your mouth you must try Godai's. Great place for a first date, 100th date, dinner alone and or for a group for a fun night.

In San Antonio, this is my boyfriend's favorite spot for sushi - I can't stand the stuff. I order the yummy beef teriyaki and love the Miso soup also. It isn't very impressive from the outside but is very cozy inside. The staff is always upbeat and a lot of fun. We always order sake when we go also.

My wife and I have been to Godai's many times and have introduced it to many friends and family. She has tried many more things than I have. We normally get 3-4 sushi rolls and usually get the fried oreos for dessert. Godai's sushi rolls are always delicious with flavors that complementary. We tend to get spicier rolls. We always get the A&M and the Heart Attack and then change up the final roll or two- spicy crab, Roberta roll, Longhorn roll, and a few others top our favorites. Sometimes the best thing is simply to ask for Goro (the owner) to surprise you with something different. We introduced some friends from Japan to Godai's and they felt the sashimi was very close to what they had in Japan and it was delicious. They return often which for me is a good endorsement. We also very much like that the wait staff do not only tend to their specific tables. If one of them sees a drink is empty, they help out. The staff thinks globally about every customer's experience. We always have a delicious meal and fun time and we consider it the best sushi in San Antonio.

Great Sushi, creative rolls, friendly staff, and a great wine list. Coupled with reasonable prices make this a great find

Been trying to branch out and try other places but Godai is still far and away the best sushi in town. The food, the service, the owners still know what matters and it's the details. A must in San Antonio.

Horrible experience on my birthday to boot. Ordered vegetable tempura and terrace chicken as a dinner. They brought out the tempura ahead of my dinner and it was cold by the time my chicken arrived. I asked them to reheat the tempura and they deep fried it again. It was disgustingly greasy and I couldn't even eat it. The chicken terrace was dry and hard. The vegetables had no seasoning whatsoever. They also took away my salad before I was done. Horrible experience, I will never go there again and I have been there many times before.

Based on the crowds the sushi must be excellent; but don't expect the same of the cooked meals. I ordered the shrimp tempura dinner which had an odd flour coating like nothing I have had before. It was barely tolerable. My wife ordered the chicken teriyaki and couldn't eat it. The chicken was half-done and totally unacceptable. We brought it home and will put it out for raccoon food tonight.

The Seared Peppered Tuna Appetizer is not really seared has no pepper on it and adding capers and mayo sauce on top was a bizarre combination. I have never sent a dish back, but was tempted with this disastrous appetizer. We ordered a Philadelphia roll and got something else... On the positive side, the lady who waited on us was quick and attentive. This was our second try. Not going back, will stick with Sushihana.

We have been going to Godai for years. We have to drive 50 miles to get there and it is completely worth it. I love the fresh and inventive food made there. The staff is so friendly and helpful. This restaurant is a must for Sushi in San Antonio.

I came here with a few co-workers after work as we heard from a local that the sushi was incredible (foreshadowing: it was!). The service was very prompt and gave us recommendations, the food was really good starting with the spicy edamame, then miso soup and salad came as part of everyone's dinner (both were very tasty), and then the sushi roles. I ordered two rolls and Nigiri and that amount felt good. The restaurant look and feel doesn't remind me of a sushi restaurant but it was still small and intimate which was fine for our dinner party. I do plan to go back in the near future.

Fresh, clean and delicious, the sashimi is so fresh that it melted in your mouth like butter. The owner is very friendly and attentive. This restaurant is the local hang out, simply because of the reasonable price and excellent sushi.

I have eaten here many times & the sushi is always fresh & delicious! The owner makes it himself & is a great guy to boot!!

After hearing such hype about this restaurant, we were disappointed. We just moved here from San Francisco so we have discriminating tastes. The tuna sashimi wasn't "top of the line". In fact, it looked and tasted plain, like it was a slab from Costco or of supermarket quality, light red color, not dark like we were expecting as our friend said the sashimi is specially selected and of higher quality. We were expecting a comparable level of tuna offered in Hawaii as that's the best and freshest tuna we've had. The spicy tuna roll was also disappointing. Every bite should have a burst of flavor and the correct mix of tuna, spiced up mayonnaise, green onions...actually, it was kind of bland. I've had delicious spicy tuna rolls where you don't even have to dip it into the soy sauce. The special caterpillar roll had nice, moist eel, but each piece was falling all over the place when picked up with the chopsticks. Properly prepared rolls should be cohesive and with the perfect blend of rice AND rice vinegar. Maybe that's what was lacking: technique and QC of the sushi preparation. We heard it was associate sushi chef who has been there for 10 years(?), not Goro the owner that night. Some of the lettuce was dried out in our salad and the Kona coffee mochi was presented hard as a rock! If you're going to offer this, at least serve it at proper room temperature so one doesn't have to fight to cut it through with a spoon. The only redeeming dish was the Hamachi Kamai w/the Ponzu sauce(nicely grilled and delicious) and our very gracious and attentive server. Lastly, why are all the sushi restaurants using imitation crab? If you want to be authentic, at least have the crab flown in from Houston or use high-quality canned crab as from Costco. It's such a letdown to see these restaurants use imitation crab, even win awards?? Don't sacrifice quality for quantity. I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this restaurant and will have to ask for other sushi restaurants from people who have relocated from Japan or go back to my neighborhood restaurant where the spicy tuna and eel/avocado roll were far better.

We had “Sushi for two” that is listed for $45 on the menu. We had contact with and were served by the two waitresses present at the time, around 12 PM today, on the 10th of July. As soon as we finished I received an urgent phone call. I motioned for my wife to quickly pay so that we can leave in a hurry. While I was still on the phone she asked for the waitress and indicated we’d like to pay. We sat in the opposite direction from the Cashier position and so to cut down on the back and forth and to speed things up (since we only had a single item on our bill anyway) my wife gave her credit card to the waitress in advance. When the waitress came back, she had the bill ready to sign. As I glanced at it, I saw it was for $52.74 with the customary open space for tip. I knew that cannot be right and so I got up asked to see the bill. Both of the waitresses got a bit nervous as they showed me the bill. (See pic of bill I posted). It showed the correct amount for the plate, $45.00 as the only item on the bill. Then the subtotal “morphed” into $48.22, the tax on that amount came to an impossible to make out amount and the total of all of that became $52.74. When I asked for an explanation, at first it was handled as if everything was in order. When I politely pressed a little about the obvious discrepancy, I was told it I appeared I was charged tax twice by mistake. I found this reply simply preposterous. I am posting a picture of the bill so that you, the readers, can judge it for yourselves. We were in a rush and so I didn’t ask to talk to the manager or owner about this. Later on I sent a message through their Facebook page and asked for an explanation before I was going to post this review. I never got a response to my message.

I am in San Antonio for business. I looked on trip advisor for a good sushi joint close to me. Godai popped up with 4.5 stars. My buddy was saying no to sushi because we are in the middle of TX. My buddy was right, the sushi and sashimi has bad texture and a scary fishy taste. Service was good but the food quality was mot. I feel sick. Be careful

Awesome service & great atmosphere! The staff is very personable and each visit is a wonderful experience! Try the beef teriyaki! DELISH!(:

The place is small but cozy. The sushi is the best in town, top quality. Their Miso soup is great too.

outdoor roadway sign is impossible read, so look for a sign you can not read on west avenue. The bento lunches a great deal of food and variety for about $10.

We have been going to Godai for years and have never been disappointed. Excellent food, good service, good wine list. Unique and imaginative dishes.

I took my business partners to Godai Sushi this Thursday they were so impressed that want to come back next week driving 180 miles from Houston. They said it was the best Sushi that they ever had!! ( And they do love Sushi and dine out often.) Food was fabulous and serving was great!

While fresh fish is not something that most people would equate with San Antonio, but one trip to Godai will make you think otherwise. The atmosphere is not what you come for, but the sushi and sashimi is. Service is helpful but a bit cheeky in a borderline way. On the night we visited, the fried oyster special was incredible. Good value as well .... Check it out.

Go early and enjoy some delicious sushi. Service was good. Place was clean. Plenty of choices of sushi and food

Best sushi in town. The review could really end there. I think the only down side is the changes to the saki and wine list a year or so back. More expensive and not as good quality.

The best sushi resturaunt in town- no question about it.

Great variety and all their sushi tastes great. I loved the team and they offered great personalized service. I will.visit again

I’ve been coming to this restaurant since they opened and consider both the food quality and the service nothing less than outstanding. The owner, his wife and their staff make any meal there very pleasant and enjoyable.

Service was fast...although a bit too fast...we weren't finished with our appetizer when the main course arrived and there was too much on our table. Waiter was friendly and knowledgable. He knows what a saki bomb is...and I have been to a Japanese restaurant that did not. Sushi was good. When you are traveling it is scary trying sushi someplace you are completely unfamiliar with. We were not disappointed.

Always good consistent sushi. Friendly staff, clean and welcoming. Owner check is always hands on and can help a novice of seasoned sushi aficionado.

We love this place. The sushi is fresh, the tools have a different twist and oh the fried Oreos! Quite the experience. Try it - you will not be disappointed.

This place has been serving locals and visitors for 12 years. Still seems to be pretty popular based on the night we went. The food was great. I loved the Pokémon Roll. My server was Armondo. He was excellent.

The owner, Goro, has a magic touch for sushi. Always freshly made and high quality make this a place worth coming back to time and time again...which I do! Try the Longhorn Roll or the Johanna! Wow!

Restaurant has an impressive selection of sushi. We had the sunset roll, pokiman roll and Louisiana roll, all good. The jalapeño poppers were unimpressive. The service was friendly and efficient. The layout and seating is a little awkward. Our waiter overcharged our bill and even though he voided the charge it still put a large hold on my credit card for 10 days (I'm always surprised at how quickly they can take money from your account but how long it takes to return it). We would probably still go back though, there were several interesting sushi choices I would still like to try, next time though we will probably pay cash.

Every time I go to Godai I leave with a smile. Their sushi and rolls are the best in San Antonio. Very fresh and extremely good. Furthermore, their wine selection is amazing. If they do not have it one the menu, the owner will find a bottle to fit your taste. You can top off your sushi with green tea ice cream!

Longhorn roll!! It's so worth the $$$.. they never let's us down. Owners are awesome and keep us coming back for more! Oh and also try the Ashley Roll!

Best by far. Great service. They don't overdo it with mayo sauces on everything, or cream cheese, which seems to be the MO for sushi restaurants in Texas. I will be back.

Good sushi, bad location. 4 stars for the owner alone.

I LOVE the atmosphere at Godai. Goro makes sure that you feel welcome and his wait staff are very nice. This is a family atmosphere, small, but clean. The dishes are amazing. If you want something different, sit at the bar and watch as the sous chef creates magic and suggests a dish pertaining to what you like. Amazing taste of fresh fish and delicacies!

I recently visited and ordered the Combination Fried Rice to go. What an amazing job the staff prepared for me. I never order this out as I'm unsure if restaurants truly understand the life of a gluten intolerant but I can always feel safe here. Thank u!

we went to that place several times and we were never disappointed. The place is wonderful for sushi, ok for other dishes. I recommend to sit at the sushi bar and meet the owner who's very nice and very helpful (so is the rest of the staff). Good atmosphere and great drink selection from japan but not limited to. Will be back.

This place is nothing to look at on the outside - (older house converted to a restaurant with weeds for a lawn), however the food inside was excellent. There is a wide variety of sushi. We tried the squid/seaweed salad, which was outstanding, and the combo sushi deluxe plate. The combo plate comes with salad and miso soup (although this is not identifed on the menu). The combo plate was way to much food for one person. Sushi was fresh, tasty and well-prepared. Highly recommend, if atmosphere is not an important criteria.

By far, this is the best place for sushi!! I have been coming to Godai for years and it never disappoints. I love everything about this place: the food, the service, the happy hour, the cleanliness, etc.

Ate 4 sushi rolls and also had seaweed salad. The freshness of the food was evident in the first bite as there was no fishy taste to any of the items. We had the Widowmaker, Fire Dragon, Rainbow and Boston rolls. They were all excellent but our winners were the Widowmaker and the Fire Dragon. The seaweed salad was crisp, light and pleasing to the palate. All of this in a To Go order.

We had the longhorn, the a&m, and the lobster tail roll! All excellent! My husband and I split and we felt just full at the end but not stuffed! Everything was just right!

the longhorn roll was delicious and the eel was pretty darn good (i'd never tried eel before) had a nice smoky flavor to it- save room for the fried oreos!

No reservation needed. Food and service were great. Lots of selection on the menu. My daughter wanted to try out a different sushi place in San Antonio to eat and I found it on the website by luck.

Sushi in landlocked San Antonio? Why yes and it was very good. Best meal I had in San Antonio the entire week I was there. Lots of different types of sushi to choose from and good service.

It's been a few years since dining at Godai so when I was in the area this day, I stopped in for lunch. It's not a fancy place and you don't need to be overly dressed. Tee shirt and shorts are the standard, or casual work wear is what I had on. I sat at the sushi bar and had the "Sushi Lunch". 6 pieces of sushi, a salad and miso soup. The sushi was extremely fresh. The salmon was OMG good, along with the others. Tuna, salmon, clam, octopus, yellow tail, and a spicy tuna roll. All were very good and very freshly made. Almosphere was casual and fairly busy for a Tuesday lunch. I got there about 11:30 and by 12:00 they were busy but they have plenty of room. I remembered the freshness of the sushi from my previous visits and will say there is no better sushi. I've had it all over Texas and most recently in Las Vegas at Yellowtail at the Bellagio. Yellowtail at Bellagio could learn a few things from Godai. There is a difference in sushi quality, how it's kept, and the way it's prepared and Godai has got it right.

This place is by far the best sushi I've had. And they have been voted the best. Lost of things to pick form. Good wine too.

We have dined here several times past. They have excellent cooked food and sushi/sashimi, and this time was no different. I really liked their Japanese style fried rice with large, delicious shrimp. Their plain and creative sushi rolls (from an extensive menu) were great. Unfortunately, the service was uncharacteristically poor. Our server was friendly, too chatty, forgot our appetizer, brought the wrong sushi orders, and took "forever" to bring our check. I'll be back. My entire family likes this place. Tonight was an aberration.

First time to order take out from this neighborhood gem. Very thankful to have the best sushi restaurant in SA just around the corner.
Best Sushi!
Godai continues to be probably the premier sushi restaurant in San Antonio. In an unprepossessing former Bonanza steakhouse, Goro has managed to create sublime Japanese cuisine. I can't think of anything I cannot recommend. I
