Really Good Authentic Food!!

By MinhajAliKhan |

We went as a party of four for lunch in China Town to this restaurants. We had no prior reservations and the place was absolutely full and humming with activity. Our wait was for about 15 minutes or so which was not that bad. We were escorted to our table and were amazed to see so many people dining there. The DimSum that we had were delicious. The special of that day was a complete lobster which was beautifully presented very reasonable in price and really tasty. It was a very enjoyable experience!

Old School, Push Cart DimSum - Great Value

By Eric G |

Located in China and seemingly not remodeled for many years, this is a good choice for dim sum if you live or work downtown. Although crowded, we've always been seated without a wait at lunch. You can get a quick, tasty and affordable meal in 30 minutes. All the traditional dim sum fare is available and it is all good, but definitely not great.

During the week the best Dim Sum deal in Chinatown

By lovetotravel92630 |

If I am in Chinatown during a week day, this is my favorite go to restaurant for Dim Sum. It is a large restaurant and on my most recent visit has maintained its "A" rating. The Dim Sum special during week days is any of the dishes in Groups A, B or C are less than $2 each! So for a group, for $6 per person you can have a variety of Dim Sum for less than a Big Mac. The service is good, and lunchtime is so busy you know there is a good turnover of the Dim Sum dishes. At the special price it is an invitation to try some new and exotic dished you might not otherwise try.

The Best Within Chinatown

The dim sum is served until 2:00 pm. The restaurant is nothing special for ambiance, it’s all about the food. Always busy, fresh and reasonably priced.

Utterly Dreadful Dim Sum

By BackinthUK |

I see this is the first review since 2021 - and I visited this place last year, and it wasn't too bad. Today we returned as a family and it was utterly dreadful, some of the worst dim sum I've had (and I've had bad). No carts anymore, so everything is ordered off a checklist. The food arrived, and the first thing we noticed were the spring rolls were cold ... then the turnip cake was tepid, then the har gow was just warm. Nothing was fresh, nothing had just been steamed of fried. This has to be just sitting under hot lamps. We got an order of veggies with garlic, and instead of bright, vibrant looking veggies with a 'wok hei' taste, these were older and yellower looking, and although a good portion - not a lot of taste. I've saved the best (worst) for last. The pot stickers were a crime to humanity. They'd been cooked and kept warm somewhere, the bases had no crispness, the dough limp and thick, the filling heavy and not hot. Utterly dreadful. This is just lazy - and frankly, charging for this is almost a crime. I'll never return, I'll be driving out to Alhambra for some dim sum next time. Avoid.

Fresh

By Brandi S |

Everything is meant to be shared and on plate could fill up 5 people! We had the chow main special, fried rice, tangerine chicken without spice, egg rools, pot stickers, and 2 things of dim sum. Everything was very fresh and tasted good. Couldn't understand the staff very well, but you are here for culture, right? Pretty nice spot to eat. Clean and cool.

Great dim sum

By Jen A |

This is a great spot for dim sum. It's offered all week, and has all the traditional dishes that you're looking for. We ended up going twice on our long-weekend visit.

Food good Service sucked Decor dated

By Tim H |

One of the top chinese places in LA? People must get some pretty bad food in other places. First of all I don't write reviews unless some place really sucks and this place is one of the worst, hence my review. I worked in the food service industry for 7 years in several types of restaurants; it doesn’t make me an expert, but I know enough to spot a good and bad place. A dining experience consists of 3 main parts: 1. FOOD 2. SERVICE 3. ENVIRONMENT Golden Dragon fails on 2 out of 3. The food was good. Not excellent, but passible. It was not Americanized Chinese food but real authentic cantonese, which is a plus. The service was the worst I have experienced in years. Took forever to get a server even though it was past lunch hour and only a couple of tables filled. The server did not speak english or refused to. There were white guys and non-chinese asians in the group of 6, so obviously we are not Chinese. There were more than 1 servers and all acted the same way. It took 20 minutes to get a menu. 20 minutes to get our drinks. We were getting up to leave and then magically all the drinks showed up and all our food at the same time. Appetizers, soup and main courses all arrived in one drop (more on dropping later). The soup was served in a family size bowl and the server filled the small soup bowls spilling soup everywhere, like in a hurry to finish. She didn't even wipe up the mess. Half the serving bowl was on the glass table top. Speaking of glass top. All of our plates and dishes were dropped or slammed on the table with loud bangs. I would say maybe the main server was having a bad day, but the support staff was acting the same way. We were aghast, but polite. If you know Filipino culture you know they are always smiling and polite no matter the circumstances. What did we do to piss all of you off so much, because that is what it seemed like. Because we came after the lunch crowd? Because we weren't Chinese or from chinatown? Finally the decor was dated and had seen better days. The furniture was simply junk and the carpet thread bare and ripped in several locations. The food was passable along with the decor, but the service would be why I would not recommend this place.

Great dim sum spot!

By js202035 |

Visiting from Boston where there are really good dim sum places. Golden Dragon doesn't disappoint! I like how they prepared the yu toy and other selections on the carts, table-side. Xiao mai and har gow were on point! Not much of a language barrier with servers and staff which is great. We had to wait a few minutes to be seated (party of 7) but we got a "medium round" table that was a comfortable size -- not too squished nor crowded by other tables and plenty of space for the food.

Rude Staff and the food quality has gone way down.

By D B |

Have been coming here in the past. This week went here after 2 years and the staff seems so rude with a could not care less attitude. The waiter came to our table with both hands in his pockets and demanded to know what we want! Whatever we ordered was met with retort like 'sure you want this'! Many times we had to get the attention of the waiters to order water and soda. They were so loud around our table that we could not hear the others in our party of 5. It seems no one tought them any manners. And the food is not what it used to be. Not going back to this place again. And on the way out, not a single Thank You from any one of them.

Dim Sum

By Danielle |

Such mixed feelings about the Golden Dragon. On the plus side the food was good and the prices were fantastic. Downside, I honestly have no idea what I ate as no one would really stop and explain to a Dim Sum beginner. So if you're a picky eater and don't speak Chinese, this is probably not the best place for you to visit. If you enjoy trying new foods at a cheap price then you'll likely enjoy the Golden Dragon.

Excellent dim sum

By Noxgear |

Ate dim sum here with my family, and also by another time by myself. Food is delicious and served traditionally from roll carts. Good choices and well prepared.

I’d Love to Go Again

By KarenlHaydenLake_ID |

I loved it! Golden Dragon was recommended by the Chinese proprietor of the hotel we were staying. He said if we went to another Chinese restaurant nearby all the diners would be tourists. He said we would stand out at Golden Dragon as the only non locals. That was what I was looking for. I was not disappointed, the Dim Sum was amazing. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious and the service was excellent.

Chinese Food In Chinatown!

By katork |

This restaurant is the largest I have been to in LA Chinatown. They must have a huge crowd for Dim Sum which is served for breakfast and lunch. We tried dinner and they were not busy...We ordered and the waiter told us we picked their most popular dish- Sizzling Shrimp. It was good.... The other dishes were so so.. Our service was fine, but I would try a different place when visiting next time. Maybe their Dim Sum is to die for!

Good dimsum

By Honeybunny96 |

We like coming to this place because of the wide variety of dimsum selections especially on the weekend. It also has convenient parking.

Dim Sum "OK", but the service sucks...

By srarakawa |

Over the past 30+ years we've gone to the Golden Dragon for Sunday Dim Sum. Yes, there are better places (e.g. Empress Pavilion, Capitol Seafood), but the central location (Chinatown), familiarity and being open at 10am, still favor it slightly with some family members (as with this visit). But, oh how this place has gone downhill... Everything had a grungy film on it, the tables, seats, condiment containers, carpets, everything needs a thorough cleaning! The food was greasy as ever (actually a plus), but the portions seem just a tad smaller. The blackbean spareribs (my favorite), sat upon a base of melon (or some type of gourd). Previously, it used to be pure spareribs. Anyway, the steamed pork buns were smaller than I remember. The one thing that didn't seem to have changed much were the Siu Mai (pork/shrimp dumplings). However, the shrimp content has decreased, but that does not bother me personally. Finally, the service was worse than is typical (smaller wait staff). So, the overall experience was blah. Best to head to the many other Dim Sum places if you are going to put up with the wait, noise and everything else that goes with the Dim Sum experience.

I like it - sort of chaotic but good

By travelingworkingmom |

We enjoyed the food and had fun. The quality of the food is very good. The service is a little chaotic - no one brought us drinks or forks when we asked.

Last minute choice and delighted with it!

By SuzieMcE |

We chose this restaurant by chance and were delighted with the food and service! The portions were good and value for money. We had kids and they were very good with them. It also feels like a part of old Chinatown which we loved! Would recommend this restaurant for families!

A Glance in Time

By Quasarsoujourner01 |

Its been a long time since I returned to Los Angeles Chinatown on Broadway. But here I was with one of my brother strolling through this town, with much visible changes. Lunch was in order and we decided to tried this eatery for dim sum lunch. Upon entering inside, the left side had a closed small bar area and to the right was the large hall. We were promptly guided to our table. Tea was served. Fun then began as we decide what small dim sum dishes to pick as food carts were coming around. In the back of this restaurant where the restrooms are located, there's another section for private parties and events. There was a partition between this area and the main dining hall. We picked several hai gaw, sai mai, and tripe dishes. beef rice noodles, steamed pork ribs, and egg porridges. It was enough for both of us. The bill came and it was expected to be in the range of $50-60. Contented, we walked out to the sunny warm Southern California weather.

Good Dim Sum but difficult in English

By stevetupper |

5 of us visited mid-morning on a Sunday. The large main room was very busy. Because we wanted the dim sum menu we just had trolleys stop by every few minutes with (usually) a selection of dishes. This is where the problem came. Most of the ladies on the trolleys didn't speak much English, so sometimes we struggled to understand what the alternatives were. Three of us loved the food, the other two thought that some of the noodle/pasta dishes were too slippery. Would I go again, yes I would. Some of our party has been going here for some 30 years - apparently the main decor has hardly changed.

dim sum at 900

By sweetheartofs |

at 0900 the place is quiet - only a few diners who looked liked they were locals. service was impressive - they have an English speaking waiter to help with your orders if the cart pushers did not speak any. the congee was exceptionally good. dim sum dishes (4 kinds) were really tasty. Price is super cheap. No more than $2.00 for most of their dishes. The chinese brocolli was exceptionaly tasty. The place is kinda dark but typical of most Chinese restaurants that evoke this ethnic feel. The place was clean. The bathroom was unusually clean with no smell !! maybe it's because it was early yet? I enjoyed the experience - will definitely go back if i am in the area.

Dim sum delicious and reasonably priced!

By Lady Gigglemug |

Great place to refuel with some dim sum while walking around Chinatown…their food was excellent imo! Good location too - just outside the main area with the two gates. Very easy to find. They always start with the customary hot tea which was lovely - but was in paper cups so I was disappointed about that. They have a huge menu but we went for their smaller dim sum menu - which is a pretty good deal as well. It’s $3.30 for each order of any of the dim sum items. We tried the Sui Mai, Har Gow, shrimp roll, turnip cakes (always a fave!), beef balls, shrimp and leek dumpling - and no dim sum experience would be complete without egg tarts of course! All the items were cooked perfectly and full of lovely flavor. We loved them all! There was a tad too much crust on the egg tarts, but that’s just my personal preference. The orders of each were pretty standard sizes for dim sum - 3 or 4 pieces each - way more than we could eat in one sitting! They had both indoor and outdoor seating - but that wasn’t apparent. When we arrived it didn’t look like they were allowing indoor seating - but when we paid the check, lots of tables were full inside - so maybe ask when you go if you don’t want to sit outside. It was super windy and all their plates, cups and utensils are paper now so it was challenging keeping things from flying around. Staff were efficient and attentive - not overly warm or friendly - just very businesslike- but we were well taken care of just the same. Their dim sum menu didn’t have any price on it so we just asked. Parking seems to be all street parking. We had parked several blocks away bc we were there to walk around Chinatown so wasn’t an issue for us. Seemed to be ample street parking available and all was free looked like. And just a side note - their umbrellas are red so everything looks red in pictures sorry haha!

Disappointing

By Joseph S |

Bad experience. Waited over an hour for a table. Waited another half hour at our table with no attention from any wait staff. Finally decided to just leave. Complained to management receiving only blank stares in reply. Heard good things about this place but ultimately disappointed. Can't comment on food since we didn't get any after almost two hours.

Dim Sum

By Diane H |

I love this place for Dim Sum. It's truly where the local Chinese come. It's not fancy. When I worked, we would come here for Dim Sum. We learned to arrive by 10:30 am because it will be crowded and you'll have to wait. There's no reservations here. The ladies with the food carts are loud and abrupt but that's how it is. You have to assert yourself to say NO if you don't want it. After retiring, I still come here when I visit LA to have Dim Sum with my retiree friends.

Dim Sum! Authentic Chinese Cuisine

By punnina65 |

Perfect place for a true dim sum experience. Be ready for a fast service and to ask for whatever you prefer to drink because if not you will get what is expected...a pot of hot tea. The servers are continuously passing by offering you dim sum or vegetables or soups from their carts. We don't eat meat and it quickly passed around to all of the servers so we were either passed by or offered seafood or vegetable dishes. Very enjoyable. This is a very simple but authentic restaurant. There were many Chinese people here and that is always an excellent sign. Would definitely return,

Best dimsum around!

By Gingerbread_Cat |

Love the dimsum and have been coming here for 10 years now. Great food at a good price. Interior could definitely use some upgrading, though, but excellent service always. Free valet parking is an added bonus, as it's very hard to find street parking.

Nice

Nice place .. always full I guess . Cheap food but delicious and fresh . Very nice concept .. was really a nice experience .

Good Service but Fair Tasting Chinese Food

By Metrotorrance |

First of all the Golden Dragon is hard to find on North Broadway in Chinatown. Their parking lot is very small valet parking; but the restaurant does validate your ticket. The dining room is one huge room with a lot of tables and chairs. The service is what you would expect from dim sum servers; but the food was only fair at best. Some of the food we got off their carts was cold. Plus the food itself was only fair and did not have a lot of taste to it. I went once and probably would not return again.

Don't go out of your way....

By dbrgdmn |

I had been invited to a banquet here. The food was "average", you could get most of it at any Chinese restaurant. I had to go to the bar to get a drink (Cranberry and Club Soda) and was ignored for quite a while, especially by the female bartender. The restaurant smelled "funny", as if they'd recently painted. I certainly would not have gone to this place but for the special event I'd been invited to.

Brunch experience of dim sum

By Marina P |

It is my first time experience of such a great variety of dim sum. I am definitely is interested in having more.

Totally tasteless

By 954pamelab |

I ordered shrimp lo mein. What I got was a lot of noodles, some shrimp and no seasoning or flavor. Totally tasteless. This business is taking advantage of people, and a disgrace to Chinese food.

Dim Sum

By Cheryl W |

Don't get to have dim sum much so was very excited to know this restaurant was just a block away from the VRBO that we were staying at in China Town, LA. Great meal for a great price!

To sum it up: DIM SUM!

By KnutM |

Possibly the best Dim Sum restaurant I've ever visited. When in LA a lunch (or dinner) here should be mandatory!

our 1st dim sum experience

By hugh b |

our 2nd time here, being new to dim sum at that point...... I ordered some wings that just came out from the kitchen, one of the wings smelled and tasted like it was marinaded in ammonia !!! this was our last time here.... then we found empress pavilion and cant seem to go anywhere else for dim sum

I'd never dined like this. Glad I tried it.

By thewinsomewench |

A shopkeeper in Chinatown recommended the Golden Dragon for dim sum. Unlike my husband, I'd never eaten at a traditional dim sum style restaurant. I had not been expecting all the servers rolling carts of food around. It was a rolling smorgasborg! We tried so many things, just plate after plate of food. Some dishes were better than others, but that seemed to be a matter of personal taste. I was nervous about the pricing, being that I didn't see any dollar amounts being written on our tab. Each server just left their stamp. In the end we were full and the total cost wasn't any more than any other meal out. I'm thinking it was close to thirty dollars with the tip and this was for two hungry people.

Authentic chinatown restaurant

Took the family here for dinner before a show downtown. Excellent food, service just okay. Recommend the mu shu.

Pretty standard dim sum

By Deborah W |

Ended up at this place because our usual dim sum place was closed for renovation. Was surprised to see how large the restaurant was. Waited 2-3 minutes on a Wednesday morning to be seated. Restaurant was pretty crowded mostly with Chinese. The first waitress was pretty pushy; kept pushing the congee even though we'd already accepted 3-4 dishes off her cart. The potstickers were pretty standard fair. The hargow were large and filled with shrimp as were the long noodles. The sticky rice was a disappointment; it was mostly rice with hardly any meat. The turnip cakes were good in that they did have the hot griddle carts where they could crisp them up on the spot. Total cost for 2 adults and 1 child was under $30, which was nice after having spent almost $100 for dim sum at a west side restaurant. Overall, reliable, standard dim sum at a good price. Parking available in the back of the restaurant.

Nothing to write home about

By dragon789wv |

It had been well over 20 years since we had been in Chinatown. Since we moved out here from Chicago in 1978, we had gone to Chinatown for dimsum at various restaurants - Miramar which became Ocean Seafood, then went to Empress Pavilion and around 1997, both places had deteriorated. We also had eaten at Golden Dragon before, and it also seems to have gone down considerably in quality. Around 1998, we started driving around 20+ miles into Monterey Park, eating at Atlantic Seafood, which is Very Good. ---- My wife and I were here during the middle of the week, for the first time in almost 20 years. We had 2 plates of Sui Mei and Har Gow - we asked the second dish of Har Gow to be taken back as the shrimp had a slight odor. The Sui Mei tasted good, though the pork was slightly fatty. We also had a Eggplant dish, which was lukewarm and and we asked for another dish and it was good. Taro dish was very good. Service was very good. Both my wife and I are Chinese, have eaten dimsum all over the world - Hong Kong, Toronto, Chicago, NY, SF, and where we live - the Los Angeles area. As I was leaving, I was trying to just take a picture of the area before entering the main dining room, as I liked the wooden screen, but was "shooed" off by the hostess, so I didn't bother. Not sure why, but respected the fact that I was asked.

A good dimsum place

By EnjoysTravelling_007 |

Good dimsum food at a reasonable price. If you enjoy dimsum, give this place a try. They have their own parking lot and you can valet park there for free.

Big portion, reasonable price, good parking

By Jiming L |

Golden dragon gave a big portion size! The parking is so easy given it's downtown. They have a free parking lot next to the restaurant. The prices are very reasonable. We only paid $14 (with tip) per person when we ate there for lunch on a Friday. The decor was beautiful. The service was attentive and it was not crowded during lunch on a Friday.

Dim Sum Adventure

By Margaret F |

This is for adventuresome people. Chinese is the main language and figuring out what is offered is a challenge. The wonton soup was good and well as the Chinese broccoli. I think I ate something with lobster or shrimp or crab which was very good. There were many options and the carts kept coming around offering a variety of dim sum. I think I would have liked to have gone with someone who either spoke Chinese or was well versed in the menu. I enjoyed the superb tea that was part of the experience and I would go again with someone who knew all the varieties offered.

Not pricey but not good Chinese food

By Harring10 |

We did not see any dim sum on the menu. We order the beef broad noodles: the noodles were good but the beef had no flavor. The steamed flounder was old and one bite almost made me nauseous. The rice also was not good. However the portions are huge! The oysters in xo sauce were very tasty which was my favorite dish. Overall with the large selection of restaurants in the area, we will not be back.

Awful!

By Cheryl H |

Just stopped in here because the restaurant we really wanted to go to in Chinatown was closed so we decided to try dim sum at golden dragon. From start to finish it was awful! The actual dining room was shabby and dirty, the food was subpar (based on other dim sum places at which we have dined). We had a very difficult time getting clean dishes (old food was smeared on the dishes), our servers attention, water, condiments etc. all of this might've been OK had the food been even the slightest bit better. But it was basically awful. Went to the ladies room before we left, again awful! Absolutely filthy. I will say though that the dining room was completely packed. So I don't know if we just had an off experience or this is just the best that Los Angeles has two offer in the dim sum department.

A great Dim Sum Experience

By Linda E |

We walked around Chinatown looking for a restaurant that looked good and found this one. We chose it because we liked the atmosphere and it was busy with what appeared to be local patrons. They had a full menu to order from but they had several carts with Dim Sum so we opted to try the various dishes we were quickly offered. The ladies that manned the various carts with different foods around were friendly but spoke broken English so it wasn't always easy to know what you were getting. It was all delicious and included a variety of Chinese dishes I've never tried before. The pork dumplings were the best I've ever had by far. If you are looking for a dining adventure, this is the place to try!

Yes, it's authentic.

By Glen K |

The Golden Dragon was recommended as one of the best authentic Chinese restaurants in L.A. so we decided to give it a try. It's big, with a very Chinese-ey décor. When we arrived the greeter asked how many were in the party and since it was just my wife and me, we said "two." They tried to put us at a little table right by the front door but we said that wouldn't do, as we would be hit by a breeze every time anyone opened the door, and would be right by everyone coming and going. So they put us around the corner at a big round table that had eight chairs around it, and a large lazy susan in the middle. Very handy when sharing dishes.. They have some $5.95 lunch specials on weekdays, but this being Saturday we had to order individual items. They do have some standard packages, but they absolutely do not do substitutions, so don't bother to ask. We did and were rebuffed. The entreés start around $8.50 and go up from there. So -- the Kung Pao Chicken was good. We ordered Beef Chow Mein, which came with really skinny noodles and lots of bean sprouts but had little taste. Pouring some shoyu on it helped. We wrapped things up with Pork Fried Rice, which was so white I wonder how on earth it was fried. I must say that each entreé came piled high on large plates so there is no shortage of quantity, and they arrived on our table in mere minutes. The wait staff was friendly enough, but we asked for ice water and never got any. The waitress I spoke with didn't seem to speak Engrish very well. I suppose that's part of what makes this place "authentic." But it's in Chinatown, so "authentic" is to be expected. They have a valet parking lot a few steps down the street, and it is free if you get your stub validated when you leave the Dragon. The valets work for tips, so be prepared to fork over a couple of bucks or so. Three dollars per hour seems to be the going rate at the self-park lots in the neighborhood, so that may be about right. We got out the door for $33, including the restaurant tip. More money than Panda Express, but I guess that's the price for authenticity. We took the leftovers home, had them for lunch the next day and there was still food left over.

Authentic, great menu selection. Service was exceptional and you definitely do not walk away hungry. Right in the heart of Chinatown ... a great restaurant! Don't miss it!

#1 BEST dim sum in SOCAL

By Double "Ollie" Winner |

We've literally tried every dim sum restaurant south of the San Gabriels and east from the coast to the desert. We saved this for last. This is the best. Even better than the much acclaimed Ding Tai Fung. There's one place in San Francisco that would be an interesting run-off for best in CA. Every dish was excellent. They prepare fresh until 3pm so it's ok to arrive for a late lunch (other places in Chinatown stop preparing after 2pm and they run out of more popular dishes.) M-F special LOW pricing except holidays. Superb service. Nicely decorated and clean. Three carts were at our table, in a full restaurant, within 2 minutes of seating. Notable, there have been no negative reviews here in over 2 years and then you have to go back 5 years to find more.

Still have decent dim sum in LA Chinatown

By geotech522 |

With the demise of a lot of the large Chinese restaurants in LA's Chinatown, the number of dim sum establishments has decreased significantly. Most people now flock to the San Gabriel Valley for their dim sum fix. After many years of avoiding Chinatown, it was a pleasant surprise to find that the dim sum at Golden Dragon was still good. In fact, the serving sizes are larger here than other restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley. The food was good. The dim sum is served on carts where you take the plates you want. Nice to know it's still around and seemingly doing well.

Try dim sum! You’ll like it!

By Ms. Yokohama |

I love dim sum, and when I visited my family in Los Angeles, asked for a dim sum lunch. Two of us got to the restaurant first, and asked for a table for four about 20 minutes later. The other two showed up on time, and we were promptly seated at the requested time. This is the type of dim sum I like best, in which women come around with many items on carts, and you can pick whatever appeals. I greatly prefer this to choosing from a menu. Each dim sum plate (or steamer) has around 3 or 4 individual items, so the more people in your group, the better. You can try a lot more things than with just two people. We had a great variety, most of which at least some of us liked. As other reviewers have commented, the explanations from the women are sometimes difficult to understand. But you can see what’s on the plates or in the steamers that they’re offering, and we had no problem with their understanding what kind of food we didn’t want to eat (“no pork”, for example). The restaurant was nearly full at noon on a Friday, and it was noisy. But even so, we could talk comfortably without having to speak up. There’s free parking next to the restaurant, clearly marked with a big sign.

A treat for all your senses.....

By Naninofro |

Get ready for a foreign experience at the Golden Dragon in Los Angeles. Lunch time is a must for the Char Siu Bao (bet you can't eat just one) and Sui Mai (baptize with hot mustard and soy sauce)....oh, you'll reach out for other delightful dim sum...relax while sippping hot tea. The 'ceremony' of partitioning off the room with room dividing panels brings back happy childhood memories of lunches with Grandpa. The bonus is free parking next door..but don't forget to tip the attendant.

Free valet

By ILoveFoodComa |

The Service: Once we were seated..... we wouldn't be hungry for too long because all the staffs were all over us with the dim sum carts!!! Love it~ Super efficient service to refill our tea and took away the dirty dishes. The Food: Monday to Friday, ALL dim sum dishes $1.99!!! YES, ANY SIZE OF ORDER - $1.99!!! That is unbeatable price~ All the food are made fresh daily. Love all the sweet buns, once they came out from the oven, the staffs would bring out to the dining room right away. Grab them when you see them!!! The Parking: Private lot, valet only (FREE!). Just tip the attendant.

Authentic dim sum, large, lots of local Chinese

This was a great dim sum place, lot of local Chinese eating here (always a good sign). Authentic food, good staff.

In the heart of LA’s China Town

By Alex M |

I came with the family to eat today and we had a great experience. The food is typical Chinese with great taste and some special surprises. We really liked the Chop Suey that has a good portion of vegetables, and includes a special Chinese that was completely new to me. The tangerine chicken was great for the kids and of course, the portions of rice were very generous.

Good for the most part

By Marissa R |

This restaurant was really good for the dish I had . I had the shrimp with garlic butter and it was good . But my friend however had clams and they weren’t cleaned right. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone for any of the other dishes. They also have free parking so you don’t have to spend a while looking for parking.

Our Family's Favorite Restaurant in Los Angeles

By ogau2015 |

When you first sit down at the table, you might be taken back by the rapidfire waitressing. People bring food carts around and ask you if you want the dishes on the cart. The restaurant is best known for its Dim Sum. Prices are reasonable. If you go to Chinatown, you can't miss this restaurant. Also, even though most of the guests are speaking Chinese, we never felt excluded (being an Anglo family who speaks English).

A Must

By nicolawca |

This is a Chinatown original. My wife has been coming to GD for over 40 years. I've been eating here for over 20 Years. It is not adequately clean. If you do not speak chinese, the staff may seem rude and standoffish. But so what. The only guage is the food, which has been incredibly consistent over the decades. The dim sum on weekends is awesome. But do not buy the dim sum appetizers for dinner, they are warmed up leftovers from lunch that they charge nearly 3 times as much. They have great dishes to satisfy all palates including Mu Shou, and meats with either american or chinese broccoli. Our favorites include Beef tenderloin stir fried french style and tangerine chicken. We take friends and family here when we are around. No complaints yet. Highly recomneded.

Great authentic food

Although in downtown, this is worth a visit, a part of Los Angeles history, and food was very good. We had delicious seabass, pork sweet and sour, bamboo dishes and some spicy meat dishes and service was attentive, they have a bar and party room.

The Best

Incredible place that serves dim sum and authentic Chines dishes. The roasted duck is want of the best dishes this side of Hong Kong. Great service, friendly help and authentic. Don't come here if your looking for atmosphere, don't come if your craving Americanized Chines - this is the real deal!

Always Satisfied

I've been going to this restaurant since I was a kid, so maybe 35+ years. Nice next door free parking. Huge inside with rarely a wait. Bar inside for adult drinks. I go with my family and take the in-laws every now and then for dim sum. Old school place with great prices and great tasting food.

good dim dum

steamed dim sum very good, hom sui gok and taro (fried) a bit oily could improve with additional carts for service

Best fresh food

By Francisco M |

Everyone loves Chinese food, but when in Los Angeles area. You have to go to Chinatown and eat at the Golden Dragon. Park in back of the restaurant and walk on in thru the side of the building or the entrance up front. Food is served hot and delicious! They have lunch and dinner family style specials. Or you can order a la Carte any entree. And if you want dim sum, it’s served for lunch, which is very good as well!! All the plates are served fresh and you can taste the difference from other restaurants.

great Food

By iamstoked22 |

Ate here based on TA reviews. We ate exclusively from the carts and it was very good. Busy for lunch. There were lots of empty restaurants that day. This one seemed to cater to the Chinese clientele which we took as a good sign.

great dim sum

By Barbara U |

opens early-we arrived 9am! great variety of dim sum with authentic flavors, wait staff very attentive and did not hurry us though we were there on a Sunday morning for 2 hours, very reasonably priced!

Dim Sum !

By FairwayFound |

I had not been at the Golden Dragon in decades. My wife and I drove to LA from Bakersfield for lunch. We got there before noon,, but had about a forty minute wait. It was Saturday, so we knew it would be busy. Dim Sum was served in the classic manner, carts circling the tables. Everything was delicious. We ordered too much and ate too much. That always seems to happen with dim sum.

Average Chinese food

By Patsy K |

Nothing really stands out as far as Chinese restaurants go. Food tend to taste about the same after a while. Portions are reasonable. Service was on the slow side though wait staff was friendly.

I was here every weekend

By bkinny s |

I came every weekend for dimsum that All the cart ladies knew my family. The price is good and the food is good. My family of 5 can eat for under $40-$45 with tips. And I have been to other places but it just didn't compare to this place. I don't come for the service as many know asian places are like that. Thy have their own private lot which is great as parking is scarce. Their pork ribs and tripe are one of my favorite dishes. And coconut buns are so fresh. They come out with char Siu later on in the morning.

Went for lunch - not dim sum

By portergirlbooks |

A friend and I went here for lunch. The restaurant is very clean and nice, but it was a confusing visit. I guess they specialize in dim sum, but they have an extensive menu. We were seated (it was very busy) but no one came to check on us or take an order, people just kept coming around with carts. No one seemed to speak English very well. Finally, we got the attention of someone who seemed like a manager, and he sent over a waitress who took our order. We had chow mein, shrimp and rice. Very good food but my friend never did get the water she asked for. It was a good place for lunch but you have to be prepared to wait for a table and for service. It felt like we were in China and we were intruders. Like the restaurant, just not so fond of the people working there. Probably a good idea to mention right when you are seated that you don't want dim sum.

Best Dim Sum in L.A.'s Chinatown

By codewarrior |

I live in S.F. and enjoy the great Chinese restaurants here. But when I have to go down south, the best Dim Sum I've found is at the Golden Dragon. Usually we're the only non-Chinese in the place, which is usually a good sign. The dishes tasty and not that expensive.

Mother's Day Dim Sum

Very nice Mother's Day celebration. Reservations taken at last minute after non-authentic West Hollywood Dim Sum restaurant reservation cancelled. Enjoyable and tasty. Thank you very much.

I Dream of this Dim Sum

By RebeccaForster |

The Golden Dragon in Los Angele's Chinatown feels like stopping for lunch in Hong Kong: energetic, exotic, exciting and the dim sum is fabulous. We usually try to get there by 11:30 but no matter how early we arrive, the place is packed with tour groups or working folks from the surrounding downtown offices. No matter how many people are there, we have never had more than a few moments wait. The ladies pushing the carts remind me of street vendors as they show you whats in the wonderful little buckets. The pork Sui Mai is my favorite, followed by a close second of the Har Gow. You can order strictly from the carts (which I do) or from ask for traditional dishes. There are specials so look at the board when you come in. Lots of Chinese is spoken and if you don't understand what's being offered, just nod your head and point. I promise you won't be disappointed no matter what ends up on your table.

The worst Chinese food I have ever eaten.

By LosAngelesPatrickS |

I have eaten Chinese food frequently my whole life. I've lived all over the US and generally Chinese food has gone down in quality over the years. Since living in LA I've been eating at passable Chinese restaurants on the west side. I decided to go to Chinatown to have "better" Chinese food and ended up at Golden Dragon. What I really wanted was good fried rice, it seems impossible to find. Order the house special fried rice....when it came.....first thing, it was white, it did not seem fried at all. Second, the shrimp tasted of nothing at all.....how is that possible?? The pork tasted as if was just going off. The sizzling house special Chop Suey also completely tasteless.....had no sauce on the plate whatsoever. The sizzling seafood platter had a little flavor, I guess. Even the tea was terrible. By far and wide THE WORST CHINESE FOOD EVER. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Amazing array of Dim Sung for a terrific p!rice

By Kate F |

Our Sunday brunch was absolutely amazing! The carts of delicious dumplings, vegetable dishes and sliced pork were just hot and perfect out of the steamer baskets. We gorged ourselves with plenty of green tea, fastidious service and the friendly bustle of activity from all the tables.--The most amazing thing was that the bill was less than alot of fast food establishments--and sooo much more delightful & flavorful.

For the price, amazing Dim Sum

By computerprofessor |

Have eaten Dim Sum all around Los Angeles, and theirs is among the best. The price is also a lot lower than many of the other places. Granted, the bathrooms are a bit messy, and the whole place could use some upgrades, but if you want excellent Dim Sum at a fair price, this is the place to go.

Little Pushy

By nancylucille |

Our friend picked this restaurant just so we could experience "Dim Sum". Well, it was an experiment. In the heart of Chinatown, loved all the building but they looked old and a little run down. We were seated and before I could get my napkin in my lap, a girl with cart full of food came running to asking us, " how many of each did we want!" Very confusing!!!! Way to fast for me BUT one of our friends grew up in Long Beach so she'd had Dim Sum before and knew how and what to order. Before I knew it, we had a table full of all types of Chinese Foods!!! It seemed that I had been in a whirlwind!!! But, it was such fun!!! Good food, well, I did not like a couple of my friends choices but that's okay. So much fun; wish we had one locally. We still talk about " Our experience with Dim Sum"!!!!

Average dimsum

By saiho |

The dimsum was average, not bad but not over delicious either. It was nice with the cars serving the food but be aware. Once you nod (because you are being friendly), the dish could end up in your table before you know it.

Dim Sum, Win Some

By Frank P |

Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles' China Town, Golden Dragon offers excellent food served quickly by very friendly staff. We like to order combination 2 with Fried Rice, Chicken and sweet & sour pork. This combo is served with appetizers and egg flower soup. We add Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. If you like, order from propane warmed food carts with steaming delights like Dim Sum, soup or other traditional Chinese cuisine. We come here at least one time per month.

good lunch

By Albert K |

Took the gold line with friends to have lunch in Chinatown. It was on Tuesday. The restaurant we were going to was closed. On this day, Chinatown was like a ghost town. Our friends have gone to the Golden Dragon years ago, so we tried it. Lots of Chinese in the restaurant. Always a good sign. Friends ordered dim sum and we ordered items off their lunch special items. The beef with bok choy was really good. We ordered five dishes. Total bill came to 41.00 for five people. Good lunch and price was right.

Outstanding dim sum

This is a great place for dim sum. Nothing fancy but fine Chinese food. No waiting here. The service starts when you sit down. Highly recommended.

Real Dim Sum in America?

By oldirtybuff |

My wife is Chinese and we live in Malaysia. We have excellent dim sum at our disposal at all times. Nearing the end of a 6 week trip in the US we were ready for something familiar. Our friend in LA took us go the Golden Dragon and we were not disappointed! It was just like home except bigger portions!

Dim Sum yum!

By MarianTB |

Standard dim sum fare - pot stickers, buns, Have the shrimp balls and their signature Chinese broccoli, pork and veggie eggrolls. The fried shrimp balls and Chinese broccoli were great. Waitresses are pretty pushy. They must get paid by how many dishes they sell. Price is right!

BAD FOOD

By Atti S |

We started with a WonTon soup which was luke warm and had absolutely no taste. The shrimp in lobster sauce were tasteless. The Kung Pao chicken was the worst I have ever eaten or seen, an insult.

Decent Dim Sum

By 2C2_travel |

Standard, adequate dim sum fare but convenient to those who don't want to travel to Monterey Park for better quality. Decent variety and standard quality. Ordered using the order forms. Food came out super quick and all at once! Restaurant is dingy and older, but that's Chinatown. I think they're the only dim sum game in town. Free valet parking adjacent to the restaurant, don't forget to tip.

Pretty Good Dim Sum

By JohnB00007 |

We went for lunch on Thursday afternoon. The restaurant was not crowded. They had a pretty good selection of dim sum. The items we liked best were the fried shrimp balls, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf and shrimp dumplings. The barbecue pork ribs were good, but cold. We would have preferred them to be warmer. The service was pretty good and the atmosphere is nice. Most of the dishes were only $1.89 each. I think the barbecue ribs were more (like $6 for a large portion). It is a pretty good value for the money. I will go back. This restaurant is in the heart of Chinatown. The Metro Gold line stops in Chinatown so getting there is fairly easy.

Best soup

You start with a friendly greeting from the old lady (grandma like) my girl loves her and always look forward to seeing her. The food was very good but the rice sizzling soup is our favorite and it is a must have. You should check it out.

Good Chinese Food

By otsukak2018 |

Went here prior to the Dodgers game. It was very empty with small staff. Staff was very attentive. We had the shrimp and pork dumplings, hot and sour soup, vegetable fried rice, pan fried string beans and some noodles. Everything was great. We took home left overs and enjoyed therm. I tried to order a half duck, but I think because of the very small customer base, it wasn't available. Will definitely go back.

Authentic Dim Sum - No frills

By David E |

My experience today compared with previous forays into Chinese dining was a positive one. We were part of a minority of non-Chinese customers and were initially treated as if we were locals but when it was realised that we needed a bit more help we were given it. It was obvious that many of the patrons were friends and family meeting up for food and fraternity and I enjoyed watching my fellow diners. Not haute quisine and rather plain settings but fast and friendly service and well prepared and good quality food. Value for money seemed excellent but I am from the UK and accustomed to paying more for food. Seasoning was just right and the vegetables were fresh. It looks like this is where I will be calling for my Chinese eating experiences next time I am in this part of the world.

Dim Sum with cart ladies

By TravelTea |

Dim sum here was tasty (comparable to the bay area) & reasonably priced. They open early (8am); we went on a Monday @ 9am and it was full of locals (mostly older Chinese having early dim sum with friends/family). No wait; there are plenty of tables as this is a large restaurant. We got the requisite shrimp ('har gow'); pork ('siu mai'), steamed bbq pork buns, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, black bean pork spare ribs, shrimp & beef rice noodle rolls. The same stuff was going around (the above mentioned plus we did not get congee, gai-lan veggie dish, fried crab claw, chicken feet, intestines, or any dessert). Not too much selection b/c it was Monday. Maybe the weekend sold out the other choices? Or possibly too early for more variety? All in all, a satisfying & affordable dim sum breakfast/brunch. Would return again. Metered street parking available early (before 10am) on a weekday morning.

Decent food

By Julio A |

The food Is really decent but nothing exceptional, the appetizer came after the main dishes and the waitress told us the reason is because it was steam!!!!! Big portions, reasonable prices.....they have dimsum 8.00 to 3.00 pm. If you are close by you can eat here but really no.impressed!

ok dimsum place

By IDM1217 |

Came here because hubby was craving for dim sums...we got the deep fried taro, shrimp balls, chicken feet, pork siumai, eggplant with fish on top, wonton soup, sesame balls, steamed shrimp dim sum, roast duck and white rice all for $33...not bad...my kids loved the wonton soup so we ordered 2 of those, the roast duck was very good...however, i feel that the choices that the carts carry were limited...we would have enjoyed our visit much better had there been more food choices... the cart ladies always seem to forget where we are when they do their rounds so we end up flagging them down whenever we can which was a bit of a hassle... service is not top priority for restaurants like these as they get visited a lot because of their food and affordable prices and not because they treat you like royalty...i don't think I will come back anytime soon even if their prices are cheap unless they add more to what they offer on their food carts....
