This restaurant is one of several near the Chinese Garden. It was mentioned as the best of the group and it did not disappoint. There were no Chinese in the place when we were there but the daily specials were in Chinese so they must eat there often. Don't expect elegant ambiance. The place is more like a diner. But the food is wonderful! Plentiful, hot and not terribly expensive. Get a number of dishes so all can share. The General Tso chicken is very good, as is the Mongolian Beef. The hot and sour soup is divine! Forks are provided but try the chopsticks for a real experience.

It's been around ten years since my last visit to the Horse and when an old friend suggested it, I jumped on it. The food was great back in the day, and that had not changed. My usual order of salt & pepper squid was just as I remembered it, crunchy, salty, spicy, and the squid was cooked just enough and in no way overdone. The menu is huge and includes items one never sees in mainstream Chinese restaurants. If you feel adventurous, give them a try. That's how I found my beloved squid dish. The decor is not fancy and a bit dated, but the place is neat and clean with prompt service and friendly waitstaff. One word of caution however. The neighborhood is quite sketchy nowadays. Portland needs to get its act together and clean up this neighborhood. I will be back soon. 27J

My Chinese wife was with me, she said the food was too American, not Chinese. I agree, I've eaten food in China(Beijing, Nanjing, Xi'an). I ordered black bean chicken with green pepper, the pepper wasn't fresh. The chicken wasn't marinated, just thrown in with black bean sauce. And the price not cheap there. I give it a poor rating.

Followed some recommendations and enjoyed a very good dinner here - great seafood and pretty good prices.

Stopped in here to have a bite and found it to be very tasty and fast. Huge quantities meant to share. I had a #2 combo and my husband had a #4. We shared and enjoyed several different dishes.

Wife had read about this location prior to our visit and wanted to go here for her birthday. We really enjoyed the excellent and authentic crunchy green beans, sauteed eggplant with jalapenos and wonderful vegetable fried rice. We shared all this and were out the door for under $25.00. We will return.

The Golden Horse serves quality lunches at a good price. I always enjoy a combination plate or brocholli beef.

Do you ever walk past a city's Chinatown and get a hankering for some hot and sour soup? Well, that's what happened to us when we were in Portland on our walk back to our hotel in the Pearl District. We saw the lion gates to Chinatown and just got that craving. We found the Golden Horse by using out Trip Advisor app to look for the best Chinese food near us. If you are looking for a fancy setting or a romantic atmosphere or top notch service, then maybe this is not the place for you. If you are looking for delicious Chinese food without all of the frills then stop in at the Golden Horse. The food is great and very fresh. I had the Cashew Chicken and my husband had the General Tso's. We also had hot and sour soup (yum!) and gyozas. The portions are huge and we had most of it wrapped up to bring back to our hotel for late night snacking.

Food's good, but the atmosphere is a bit scary down there these days.

Was looking for a place to eat recently and found this in my wanderings in Chinatown. It isn't fancy, but some of the better places aren't, so don't expect much in the way of decor. There is an extensive menu selection and what I ordered was fantastic. On my first visit (at dinner), I ordered the pepper and salt squid (lightly battered/fried) and the salted fish with chicken fried rice. Both portions were HUGE. I ate all the squid as coating wouldn't keep. Half the rice came home. On my second visit during the lunch hour, I ordered the steamed meatloaf with salted fish. I had an idea what to expect but asked the server for confirmation. It isn't a standard meatloaf in that it isn't long and rectangular. Rather, it is ground/minced pork pressed and flattened in a round shallow platter. It is topped with bits of salted fish and steamed. It takes a little longer to come out as it isn't stir-fried. Worth the wait. Again, a large portion and half came home. There is a lunch special and others were having that. Sounded like the Mongolian beef was popular. It is inexpensive for what you get. The portions are large and you basically get two meals.

Stopped by here after the Chinese garden and had lunch. 2 meals with soup and egg rolls were only $13. Filled us up and we were ready for the next spot on our vacation and it didn't break the bank.

It does not look like much from the outside or inside, but their portions are huge, the house special congee is fantastic. I have never had a bad meal here and each month when I am in Portland, this is my Sunday stop.

We ended up at the Golden Horse because the person at the store on the corner said that it's his favorite restaurant and the food was fresh. We were not disappointed, in fact we were delighted by the quality and quantity of our lunch. We both opted for the lunch combo, which included hot and sour soup, an egg roll, sliced pork barbecue, friend rice with pork and the main entree - I had the Szechuan Beef and it was fantastic! The soup was thick and tasty, the egg roll was a little greasy but not too bad, and the beef was spicy and full of flavor. Even the fortune cookies were delicious! The atmosphere was the only disappointment, with a dull, gray and undecorated interior, however, the smiling and sweet server more than made up for the dismal setting. I will definitely return to the Golden Horse anytime I come to Portland for a good, cheap and satisfying meal!

Our group of 8 walked from the downtown Hilton. We ordered the family style dinner. They allowed us to sub other items from the menu that were not in the family style choices! :) All 8 dishes were wonderful. We left happy and full. We couldn't eat all of the food. The restaurant is old but clean. The staff was extremely nice. This is authentic Chinese with entrees you may not usually see at chain restaurants.

Six of us went there on Christmas Day for a birthday celebration. It was very busy that evening and we had made reservations. They sat us right near the kitchen and made no apologies for it. In fact, the hostess was quite rude. The only saving grace was the food. Service was very slow, but we were satisfied with the food. Would not go back for a special occasion again, but perhaps lunch would be okay.

Overall: I frequent this restaurant at least three times a month, and I've never been disappointed. I will go back - again and again. I have tried other places in the district, and for a non-cart option, this is THE place of Americanized Chinese food. Panda fans will certainly feel satisfied, and those who like an inexpensive downtown lunch option should check them out! Regular order: One of the many (20-ish choices) on the lunch menu. This includes: A refillable pot of mild-tasting hot tea One egg roll with sweet-n-sour sauce 3 small slices of char siu pork One small bowl of fried rice A good portion (big enough that I always take some home or save for the next day) of a meat dish, usually with veg Cost: About $8 - and please tip! Pros: Delicious food Great lunch prices Pleasant service Clean Quiet, but not silent Cons: Seems like a cheap place, aesthetically, but the food belies that visual impression.

The cooks have changed. The food is average. This cook does not believe in food presentation. Flavors are good. Would recommend for authentic Chinese in old Chinatown.

From the outside the restaurant looks "iffy" at best and upon stepping inside I didn't feel any more comfortable. What I did notice, however, when I went inside was that they had lots of patrons and lots of the people eating there were Asian. My fiance is Chinese and he decided that the crowd must be a good sign, so we ate there. I had a Walnut Shrimp that was ... drool.. so rich and sweet and well different than anything I'd had before. He had chow fun with chicken and w/o gravy (sorry I can't remember exactly what it was called.) The fluffy, wide noodles (not at all like the Chinese take-out places I've been to in the past) melted in my mouth. Both were so delicious, as well as inexpensive. And while I was not brave enough to try any of the more traditional dishes, things like Chicken Feet, were on the menu. We liked the place so much we ate there a 2nd time before leaving Portland. The portions are large, so it would be easy to share an entree and appetizer for 2 people. And, as I said, the prices were very reasonable. I think it cost us less than $20 for the 2 of us to eat there. Hot tea is complimentary, as is the rice. So all in all, it's a bargain.

Chinatown in Portland is not as nice or as good as most China towns in big cities. The food in this restaurant was mediocre but the service was friendly and excellent.

We enjoyed lunch here after shopping at Portland's Saturday Market. If you want good Chinese food at a very good price, we recommend this restaurant. The large hot and sour soup was very good and was enough to feed 4-5 people. All three entrees were very good. Portions are large so entrees can be shared by two people. Not a fancy place and the carpet really does need to be replaced but if you overlook that, a great place for Chinese food.

This was a late lunch stop after a visit to the Portland Saturday Market. It's pretty unpretentious place with tacky décor inside. Some of the clientele smelled like mothballs. But, it's all about the food. Everything ordered was good and good enough for leftovers to be taken home. If you like tablecloths, comfortable chairs and nice decorations, go somewhere else. It's like a Chinese diner with good food. So, go for the good tasting food. Take out if you're turned off by the inside.

If you are looking for a fancy place to eat Chinese Food this is not the place to eat. However, if you are looking for a place with great Chinese food at a cheap price this is the place to visit. Many traditional items that youwould find at a Chop Suey place but also some more unusual items like Steamed ground pork with Ham Ha. The carpet is a little dirty and worn but the food is worth the trip to Portland's Chinatown. You can also take out food. Lcoated a block from the Chinese Gardens.

After visiting the Lan Su Chinese Gardens we walked one block to the Golden Horse Chinese Restaurant for an inexpensive lunch which was fabulous. Our $6.50 lunch special contained a cup of soup, spring roll, barbecue pork, rice and a main dish. (I ordered the cashew shrimp and my friend had the cashew chicken. We had at least twenty items to choose from). The main dish was loaded with tiger prawns (chicken), broccoli, carrots, snow peas and cashews. I will be back. The service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is one to ignore so that you can enjoy the great food.

When we first visited this resturant about a year ago we were amazed by the menu which looked so old we were sure it had been an origianl and at least 15 years old. The menu prices were covered with white out and updated. The food was excellent! This trip we were suprised with new menus. Should of kept the old ones. They were cool. Food still great, try the peking duck! Or the shrimp birds nest. The atmosphere is old and not really clean but if yo can get past that it is worth it. Service is slow so don't be in a hurry.

Came here 2x in the last week. Still as good as my first visit a year back. The pepper and salt squid was crunchy on the outside. Not too chewy. Big portion. Best part was there were lots of tentacles. I have seen places where there were none like the place on NE Sandy. Seriously? What squid has no tentacles? I just tried the steamed meatloaf with triple eggs. Not a meatloaf in the sense of a loaf of bread. Rather it is ground pork laid out in a platter and steamed. Eggs were one each of salted duck egg, a raw egg, and a preserved egg. Very similar to their steamed meatloaf with salted fish from a prior visit. All very good. Nice choice of dishes not usually seen. Service was fast. Both times were midday about 1230 PM.

We passed by here for a quick lunch before heading to the Chinese Gardens. The ambience isn't much to speak of and there was only one server at the time. Food was just so-so. Serviceable if you don't expect too much.

The exterior of the building looks pretty bad and we almost walked by it. The food on the other hand is very good. We had kung pao chicken and general tso chicken. Both were extremely flavorful. With it you get fried rice, barbeque pork, soup, and a spring roll. The portions are large. I'm not sure I'd want to be in the neighborhood at night, but there seemed to be police presence along with patrolman on bikes.

Sometimes you just gotta have some Chinese! Even though the neighborhood is sketchy (to say the least!) don't miss out on some of the really superbly done traditional dishes here! Recommended: Sweet Sour boneless Whole Crispy Fish, War Wonton Soup (five stars just for the dumplings), any of the many seafood selections such as Clam in Black Bean Sauce, and a hard to find dish on the mainland (but a Honolulu Chinatown staple) Steamed Pork loaf with salty fish, which is served in a Pyrex pie dish. The waitress will ask you twice if you really want to order this, as most haoles don't appreciate hom-yew (dried fermented salted fish), but try it and you'll be amazed at the taste, Imagine anchovy paste mixed with fish sauce on top of Chinese spiced Jimmy Dean Sausage. If that doesn't get you wondering, nothing will! I swear you'll love it, let me know what you think!

I just love this place and have to come back for its delicious and authentic Chinese food. We have been coming here for years. The green bean and beef was superb, the egg foo young was okay as it may have been mixed with flour and the yeung chow fried rice was good. Overall we still enjoyed our time at the Golden Horse Restaurant.

Just around the corner from the Chinese Gardens, this makes a great place to stop and feed your whole gang for rather cheap. The decor is completely lacking with an almost cafeteria look and harsh lighting that does not hide anything. The food however is hot, fast and plentiful with enough choices to feed even the pickiest eaters. Concentrate on the food and ignore your surroundings.

Good food, but place is dirty, good price and lots of variety. They have lots of different items to choose from, bad neighborhood.

Not sure where to begin with this, we were walking through China Town in Portland and happened upon this restaurant. It was lunch time, we were hungry so we took advantage. The exterior of the building was nothing to write home about, we ordered a lunch combo and split it between the two of us. Kung Pao Chicken & Shrimp. It came with rice, egg roll, soup and BBQ Pork for $7.50 - Bargain price and it was very tasty ! The interior ambiance is something else, there are two "fresh fish" tanks for your ordering pleasure, however the fish / lobster inside the tanks is anything but fresh, in fact they were dead, not just died dead, but sunk at the bottom of tank, eyes glazed over, dead for awhile dead. This was only slightly concerning, but we ordered chicken and shrimp so we felt somewhat safe. The food itself was good. The soup was a hot and spicy tofu blend of something, kind of gross. But the rice and kung pao was delicious. The BBQ chewy and fresh. We were also quite entertained with a homeless woman burning fresh sage table side with her lunch. My rating is mixed, while the food was good, the ambiance "different" and the dead seafood concerning... it rates somewhere between a 3 and 4. Hopefully before you visit, the dead fish will be gone. :)

We went looking for Chinese Food and Yelp and Waze lead us here. Listed as a top ten restaurant we thought that it was the usual fare served in Chinese Restaurant. Considering all of the Chiese resatutants closed in Portland's Chinatown I don;t doubt it. If you judge a Chinese Restaurnat by whether Chinese perople dine there then this is the place for your hunger for Chinese food. We'd eat here again if we lived in the area.

The decor is hideous and definitely dated. We were not impressed with our service on the first visit, but gave it another try since the food was so good. Now we are somewhat "regulars", going there twice a month (or more when anyone comes to visit). We LOVE the General Tsao, dry sauted green beans and the chicken chow mein with soft noodles.

The walk to here was very depressing. Outside of the restaurant smelled of urine. The ambient was poor. We regretted straightaway but after a long walk decided to give it a go. We had seafood noodles and seafood pot. Probably 90% of the gravy is corn starch. Seafood pot has just very limited ingredients and noodles was bland. This is our first trip to Portland and it has been a great disappointment. When research on the trip people in the forum has mentioned that Portland has changed a lot to the worse and I wish I had listened and plan more nights at the coast and maybe just one day at Portland.

Golden Horse is our go-to downtown spot for Chinese food. In fact, it has been for the past 18 years. We get takeout every other week or so, and it's always fun to catch up with the staff. I'm a big fan of their noodles, and the salty crunch of their Pepper & Salt Pork is heavenly, as is the squid. Oh, and definitely try the string beans and the eggplant! The Hot & Sour Soup is also excellent! They give you so much food, there is enough for two good-sized meals - at least. The pandemic was hard on downtown in general, and we're grateful this gem is still here for us to enjoy. Golden Horse and the kind folks who run it deserve your support.

We have been to Golden Horse Seafood once for lunch and have ordered combo #5 and combo# 2. The meal was good and so was the service. Price is really good for the value.

We accidentally found this place in downtown China town. It was an eye sore getting there walking by homeless camps, but that’s not their fault. The inside of the restaurant again is nothing to look at. But the food was amazing. I was really impressed. The wonton soup with pork was huge! Rich broth and just spicy enough. The pork fried rice was the best I’ve ever eaten. It was crispy and delicious. Everyone really loved their food. Don’t pass this place up.

I was referred to the Golden Horse by an older Chinese lady who volunteers at the Lan Su Chinese Garden. I asked her where she liked to eat in Chinatown, and she didn't hesitate a bit. She "warned" me that this isn't a fancy restaurant, but that it serves the kind of food Chinese people would make in their homes. She also recommended some of the dishes. All I can say is that she was spot on in everything she said. Understand, you go to this restaurant for the food, and nothing else. We didn't try a thing we didn't love. My guide had recommended the dry sauteed green beans. They were delicious. There was something I couldn't identify in them which our waiter said was pickled Chinese vegetables, and they packed quite a wallop of flavor. They weren't like the many Japanese pickled veggies I've had, but they were scrumptious. Our guide also recommended the salt and pepper squid. This is batter fried, but the lightest batter imaginable. Another hit. She liked all the hot pots, and we had one with salted fish and tofu - yum! I can't remember everything we ate, but I strongly recommend this restaurant, especially considering the prices. The Golden Horse menu has what seems like hundreds of items, and many would not be chosen by average American diners, e.g. chicken feet with vinegar sauce, Zho Shan Jelly Fish, and Sea Cucumber with Brown Sauce. Other than the sea cucumber, I recommend being adventurous. I would certainly have returned if we'd had more than one day in Portland. (And I have to say that some of you might very well like sea cucumber; it's just my warning.)

As has been noted by others, the décor is dated and not impressive, but the food is great. We chose from the lunch menu and could not finish the main entrée. In fact we took the balance home for a late night snack that night. All this for less than $15.00! Service at 1:30 pm was fairly swift and, as stated, the food was great.

I like their beef rice noodle food and been there twice within a few months... I have been taking out from this place twice within six months.

Good Food.

This restaurant was recommended by several volunteers from the Chinese Garden which is just around the corner from the restaurant. We ordered from the lunch menu which included soup, egg roll, roast pork, an entree of your choice and hot tea. All for $6.99. The meal was very good and so was the service.

This is the BEST Chinese home cooking in town. Totally unpretentious with no atmosphere (you make your own buzz) but big on great authentic Cantonese comfort food. Always full of weekend local Asians which is good sign as they know where to eat. The deep-fried sticky rice stuffed chicken is signature dish (pre-order 24 hr in advance). Every menu item consistently tasty and fresh, good size portions, great value. Pre-set dinners are even better for family dining and budget. I always leave happily well satiated and satisfied. It's our weekly go-to outing with friends or family.

service was very fast and competent I got a pretty basic dish, Pork LoMein with Black Bean sauce, and it was about the best lo mein I have ever had, you could really taste the quality compared to a normal small town chinese place. Yes the atmosphere of the neighborhood and the restaurant suck, but everyone knows that the worse a chinese place looks, the better the food is (generally)... if you want atmosphere go to PF Changs and prices were pretty good for what I got

we happened to park near this restaurant and looking at TripAdvisor reviews decided to go. It was excellent. Great lunch special with tons of food. Service was fast food was delicious. We had chicken with cashews and sweet and sour chicken. Very authentic Chinese.

Go here for a low budget, big appitite experience. The egg-drop soup is wonderful. The steamed rice - shrimp fried rice - noodle chow mein - etc. The place looks like its got stuck in the 80's, but eh... the food is great, and you'll end up scrapping the plate.

Terrible lighting, a bit dingy, but delicious and an adventure. thanks for introducing it to me Mie!

The food and service here are fantastic and they give you your money's worth. Would still love to go there, but moved out of Portland--am in Gresham now.

We had a table for 11 at 7 pm on Christmas Day. The place was packed and we had to wait a little bit but it was worth the wait. We splurged on crab and it was good but it would have been super cheap without it. The decor and the location are not impressive but the food was good. Enjoyed the lemon chicken and the Buddhist delight.

Fairly standard Chinese restaurant : large informal but a somewhat unusual and large menu. The potstickers are great, hot and sour had good tang and spice. The fried oysters in black bean were the real standout. House special clay pot was good. Great quick service and kind to children.

Greatest authentic Chinese restaurant with the best food and reasonable prices. Pepper and Salt Squid and Dry Sautéed Green Beans are not to be missed. They open every day till late hours.

Good food. Great service. Place run down like most of china town in Portland. Prompt curtious service.
Dinner
Excellent Chinese food! Plentiful, inexpensive and wide variety. Located in Chinatown district which adds to the ambiance. If you can also visit the Chinese Gardens nearby.
