Don't Pass This Up!

Hole in the wall excellent! Not fancy, just excellent food and friendly staff. One of the best in Dallas!

True TexMex in South Dallas

By James W |

Before going to a concert at the Kessler, our group decided to try the fare at Gonzalez. There is no sign, but it is worth trying to find it. The service was great and the food was amazing. Small quaint place full of locals, so you know it has to be good. Fresh homemade salsa, crisp chips, and cold beer. It don't get any better than this!

Home feel

By Happy Fever |

This place has a home feel to it. Not to big on the inside but it'll do. Staff was awesome. Very helpful and nice staff. I must admit. The food was GREAT. I was totally shocked at how amazing the food was. The enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas was awesome. Food prices are very reasonable. I love coming here. It's a hidden gem of Dallas.

Always tasty

Been going to Gonzalez for the last 40 years, since I was a little kid. Never changes, always stays fresh and delicious. It's my favorite salsa ever. Love this establishment.

Really good food

By pleasantrun1229 |

I have eaten here a dozen times or so. The food is very good, not fancy--just good quality food prepared by people who know what they are doing. Try the guiso.

Friendly Staff, Super Clean, Mediocre Food

By JoInTexas |

The enchiladas (beef and cheese) had no flavor. Neither did the beans. The rice looked so bad that we did not even try it. I do not recommend this place and do not understand the previous good reviews.

Wonderful Place!!

By Chesley W |

Yum, yum, yum!!!! This place is so great!!! The tortillas are so soft! I had a chorizo and egg burrito, and FRIES!! People....these fries are homemade and HUGE!!! Margarita was delicious as well. There was a constant line, so plan on waiting if you go for Saturday lunch.

Hands down the best

This place is the real deal for authentic mexican food. Small mom and pop place with reasonable prices, great food and the best tortillas! And the mole and guiso de puerco are awesome. My husband says its just as good as what his grandma used to make.

Still our favorite place

By dallasvisitor2016 |

I have been going here since I was a teen, now taking my adult chidren there. We drive from Plano to Oakcliff just to eat here. Food is delicious and the Horchata is our favorite. The rice is delicious, the meats are always perfect. We love the Carne Asada, Milanesa, Flautas, Tacos al carbon, many others to choose from.. All very tasty, very fresh, never have I tasted re-heated rice or burnt beans as other "so called Tex-Mex" popular establishments in the Plano/Richardson area. Great place to eat along with a reasonable prices.

Lunch

Gonzales has excellent & authentic Mexican as well as tex-mex style food. The tortillas are always freshly made & out of this world. Open Tuesday - Sunday but you better arrive early because the line forms quickly.

Best flour tortillas!

By Faviola H |

This food is amazing! They keep bringing the fresh tortillas out! Never seen a restaurant do that! The atmosphere is very inviting and the staff was all friendly. Pretty busy place, which says a lot about how good it is! Try the chorizo with cheese appetizer! Another first for me, loved it!

Fresh Tex Mex

By Gregory L |

Everything tastes like it is made from scratch, and I do mean everything. Had the chicken enchilada, that comes with beans and rice. Both the beans and rice taste fresh prepared, no can or box here. The enchilada was the perfect lunch size. Chips and salsa were great. Salsa not too hot, hint of sweetness. Great lunch.

Friendly, quick service, good tex-mex!

By William W |

The restaurant is a little difficult to find because it's not very well signed (although the name of the restaurant is painted on the store front window). Service is quick and the food is good. Salsa is served warm, and very tasty.

Recommendation fail

By May0621 |

We are from the San Antonio area visiting Dallas on a couples trip. We ran into someone who recommended this place. The menudo lacked flavor & the salsa tasted like it was made with onion & sugar. If you're looking for an authentic mexican restaurant this is not that place. Definitely not what we had in mind or expected.

One of my 'go to' places for real Mexican food in Dallas

By Skruggs |

I like this place. I have for years. The people who run it are nice. The portions are big. The good is excellent. Nothing much else need be said. If you want really good quality Tex Mex style food, this is a good place to come. I was introduced to this place by Latino locals... and they weren't wrong. Mexican American families come here to eat. They aren't wrong.

Excellent Authentic Mexican

Great service , great prices and excellent service. Best resturant Menudo I've had to date. Very clean and comfortable!!! A must stop, when I visit Dallas!!!

Best Menudo In Town !!

By Vidal-Valerie |

By far no one does it better !!! Thick Homemade tortillas and good salsa, these three by far makes this place. Great service too. If your looking for a Mexican food this is your spot. If not it will be.

Great authentic Mexican & Tex-Mex food. The absolute best handmade tortillas. We dine here at least once a month.

Quite a surprise!!!

Went to Gonzalez to breakout of the Greenville ave Mexican food routine. What a nice casual place. Thanks to my workmates for this great recommendation!

Our favorite - the *BEST* hole in the wall for Tex-Mex

By CtYankee51 |

I originally read about Gonzalez in the early 1990's when they opened at this location. We have been patrons since then. Each time the kids come back to Texas they crave and demand the dinners at Gonzalez! Hector is our favorite waiter - very accomodating and professional. He has watched our kids grow up. The food is *outstanding*. There is a selection of beers - Dos XX (green) is always available. The margarita's are very good - El Grande is $7.95. Soft drinks are served in cans. We usually start with the nachos supreme appetizer. A large oval dinner plate portion with chips smothered in beans, ground beef, cheese, guacamole, sour cream and jalapeno's. Delicious! Without fail, our favorite is the chicken fajita's platter for two. Fresh chicken pieces cut into chunky strips are grilled to perfection - as are the onions and red peppers that accompany the meat. The spanish rice and refried beans are very tasty as is the fresh made guacamole and pico. The flour tortilla's are thick and satisfying. Everything we have ever had is made on the premises and has always been fresh and tasty. The sopapilla's are large and delicious - served with the customary honey. Four to an order - each one sufficient for one adult. They usually have good sized pralines for sale which are decadently delicious! The food hasn't changed, but, as to be expected, the portions have been reduced and prices have gone up BUT are still a good value. Gonzalez is on W. Jefferson near the historic Texas Theater. The area is largely home to businesses that cater to the Hispanic population. And, the locals love this place! It is not a fancy, but the decor is festive and charming. It's the kind of place you can stop at coming directly from a soccer game - kids exhausted and in mucked up clothes wearing the soccer cleats - which we did routinely for years. Our family is in the third generation who loves the food that Gonzalez has perfected. Parking is on the street with meters - which must be paid during the daytime Monday through Friday. Sometimes you'll get lucky and snag a parking spot directly in front. Occasionallly, you will be approached by a needy person in the area. I have never felt threatened, but wouldn't go there by myself. They are open at 9 am for breakfast, lunch and dinner and closes at 9 pm. CLOSED MONDAYS. They accept most credit cards but NOT AMERICAN EXPRESS. Gonzalez offers Menudo on weekends. (I've never tried it but am told it's a fast sellout on the weekend.) They do have a location on Bruton Road in East Dallas. I'm salivating now and we'll have to make a run to Gonzalez. It's that good. (This will be the third time this week since our New Yorker needed his TexMex fix.)

The real deal!

By leahalanis |

I ate here with my family last weekend and was so pleasantly surprised! I had the carne guisada burrito, which was sooooo tasty. It's accompanied with rice and beans and is only $3.95! The meat was so tender and their house made flour tortillas were so soft! My son had the menudo and said it was some of the best he's ever had. This spot is a little hard to find and the signage isn't the best, but it's well worth the trouble!

Just like home.

By Richard M |

I have been eating Gonzalez since I was a little boy my mom would bring it home from work when she worked of Maple Ave. When I went to college I would always come home to eat Gonzalez. I moved to Carrollton and the had opened up a restaurant there as well off of Beltline my wife and I would always eat there. And when we moved south of Dallas we would always come to this location and I still to this day love this place. The tortillas are like my grandmother would make God rest her soul. The food is great but it's not about the food for me anymore. It's a feeling that resonates in me like coming home to an old smell that just immediately puts you at peace. This place has and will always have a place in my heart Mexican soul food. Papas con juevo and menudo forever.

Super Mexican Food, Super service

By Kim G |

We were driving from Central Texas to Frisco and there was traffic issues in Dallas. My husband suggested looking for a restaurant and eat dinner while waiting for traffic to clear a little. I looked on Google Maps and found this little gem of a restaurant. It's hidden from travelers, off the beaten path and interstate, but easy to find. It's in an older looking downtown part of Texas with shops crowded together and metered parking in front. Once we parked and went in, we were seated with a great view of the US gold cup game and looked over the menu. I ordered fajita nachos, my husband had a burrito with carne sauce. The portions were very large, and the homemade tortillas a delectable treat. Thick, soft flour tortillas that melt in your mouth. Wow!!! OUr server was very sweet, kept our glasses full, checked on us many times through our meal. The salsa was different, it wasn't spicy, it just had a unique flavor. I didn't care for it too much, my husband thought it was ok. The other food, however, very good! I agree, everything taste like it's made from scratch. Great little find!

Used to be Great until Changes took Place

By Victor V |

The Tex-Mex here used to be so much better, but since the changes have happened the quality of service, location and food has gone down. The fool used to be great, but I now claim it a just OK which is a significant drop. Other location may be suggested.

Great, Down-to-Earth Food

By Angelo A |

I say down to earth because they offer traditional Tex-Mex food and without the fancy fusion bullcrap. The flour tortilla, the breakfast, and the Huevos Rancheros con Carne Guisada IS AWESOME! I tried the Chicarrones con Huevos burrito the last time I visited, and it was simply a delight! Also great location!

Oh My Freaking God !!!!!

By Dan D |

Everything on the menu was awesome!!!!! Reasonably priced, great service. This is definitely on my list of favorites for authentic Mexican. One of the small hole in the wall treasures you hear about.

Friendly place with great value

By LoveToTravelBoston |

Gonzalez is on the strip in an old downtown. It was busy on a Saturday night, but the wait wasn't long. Bright colors and Formica tables inside, quick service and good food: - I had the Gonzolez Especial - fresh beef taco, pork tostada with fresh guacamole, 2 cheese enchiladas and lots of beans & rice - the fresh tortillas with it were perfect - my friend had the chili relleno - great flavor from the poblano pepper, lots of rice & beans and the same addictive tortillas. Margaritas Classicos were ok, a bit sweet, not enough lime. So go for good food cheap and a friendly atmosphere...

I'd come here just for the tortillas!

By Jessi U |

I heard about Gonzalez Restaurant last week when a friend suggested we meet there for dinner. I passed the restaurant a few times before finally seeing the sign. That caught my interest right away - hole in the wall restaurants usually have the best food! Walking inside, I immediately noticed the way that the layout featured half-walls and little alcoves to created intimate spaces for quiet conversation even if the restaurant was crowded. My friend got the nachos and I ordered chalupas. The portions were really generous and the prices were surprisingly low. The guacamole on my chalupa was absolutely delicious, as was the rest of the meal. I literally cleaned my plate! I liked the place so much that I introduced another friend to Gonzalez this week. And that's when I tried... the tortillas. I ordered the chicken hard taco plate, which came with beans, rice, and tortillas as sides. Oh my goodness! I've had homemade tortillas in Peru, Belize, and Mexico - these were by far the best I've ever eaten. The hard tacos were incredible as well. Forget those crumbly, stale-tasting shells you've had other places, these were somehow crisp and flaky like pastry at the same time. As you can tell, I was completely enchanted with this place! The staff was great too - attentive and quick, but not interrupting conversation every two minutes to check on you. They were already closed when we left, but the staff was really gracious about that as well. One thing to plan around: they're closed on Mondays. Summary - best Mexican in Oak Cliff. Affordable, friendly service, great atmosphere, and incredible food. Oh, and PLEASE try the tortillas. I'll probably see you there!

Delicious and authentic TexMex

By Lisaloy76 |

We had visited the Dallas Zoo and wanted a place close by. It’s a bit hard to find...on the main area of Jefferson but no large sign out front. Spicy salsa, fresh chips and fresh quest. Delicious margaritas in schooner glasses. We have Mexican Guisa, create your own platter, sour cream chicken enchiladas and grill cheese/ fries. The fries were delicious. All good portion sizes and very freshly We will definitely drive over just to eat here!!

Just like Grandma Used to Make!

By Mark A |

This restaurant along a charming part of Jefferson Boulevard, just a block from the Texas Theater, is one of those places you don’t want many people to know about because you don’t want success to negate its nostalgic deliciousness. Several items on the menu take me back to my childhood, sitting at my grandmother’s kitchen table, listening to her hum as she merrily cooked over the stove, savoring the flavors of her cooking that I now miss dearly. Sigh… if only they had a soundtrack of a wooden rolling-pin flattening out tortilla dough. The tortillas are plump and delicious, as opposed to the mass produced, paper-thin variety that most restaurants capitulate to once they attain chain success, or when investors move in and try to streamline production and reduce labor and material costs. I will pay good money for food that tastes like my grandmothers; but perhaps I am relegated to a niche market. My favorite item on the menu is the Guiso Mexicano. I scoop out the guiso and its delicious sauce, and wrap it up in a warm tortilla… just as I did as a boy, in my grandmother’s warm and cozy kitchen. It’s a good thing I don’t live close to Oak Cliff, because I’d be liable to habitually dine at Gonzalez Restaurant and grow as wide as the Trinity; but once in a long while when I yearn for my grandmother’s cooking, I’ll take a break from the barrage of Kale and Flax seed salads kissed by natural antioxidants that are nowadays increasingly prevalent in the North Dallas millennial stomping grounds where everyone is overly obsessed with body image. This is only one of two places that I will trek to in the Metroplex to feel my grandmother's spectral embrace, and hopefully gain a pound or two that my rabbit-food induced diet has cost me. Sure, I’ll occasionally do Mr. Mesero’s, Javier’s, Komali, or other places more convenient to my neighborhood: Undoubtedly they are good and offer gourmet frills; but sometimes, I just want to savor the flavors of home, without any pretentiousness, trendy ambiance, or having to dress a certain way to feel comfortable; not to mention, leave a restaurant feeling completely full without having to get dessert. Granted, sitting in the middle of this restaurant, as a monolingual multi-ethnic American whose skin is too pale and hair is too dark to ever completely fit in just the Anglo or Hispanic realms, I do feel somewhat out of place...as I do in many places in North Texas where I feel there is not enough diversification occurring (I want people of all races to mix and mingle more often); but unlike in the aforementioned places in North Dallas, I could dress down or up, and not feel so critically judged… just like when I was a boy, sitting in my grandmother’s kitchen, anxiously anticipating her next meal. I encourage you all to try it, but not overwhelm it. Be prepared to wait for a table. It's worth the wait. The flavors are authentic, the ambiance is casual, the wait staff is warm and friendly, even when they realize I am Spanish-challenged; and the food is deliciously sinful! For you skinny, emaciated people like me, I’m sure that won’t be a problem. Just get over your calorie-counting selves and be prepared to hit the gym the next day. Some fat in moderation won’t kill you. You only live once. Have a hearty meal like someone’s grandma used to make. So if you happen to come during one of my rare visits, and you catch a glimpse of me shoving a burrito down my throat with guiso gravy dribbling down my chin, with the uncouth demeanor of a starving abandoned dog who hasn’t eaten a truly fulfilling meal in a long time – don’t judge;)

Best tortillas!

By pinapuna |

Always get my tex-mex fix here when in Dallas. They have homemade flour tortillas that could make a meal. They are really thick, so not for everyone. I like them very much, but there is also a time for thinner tortillas. You will definitely fill up on these. I always get the carne guisada which is very good and you can sop up all the gravy with these tortillas! As everyone recommends, ask for the cold salsa - much better than the hot stuff they bring with the chips. The cabrito guisada was also enjoyed at our table. Small place - can be full at busy times.

Authentic Mexican Food

By RCA1012 |

This is one of those Mom and Pop places that is clean, friendly and the food is absolutely WONDERFUL! If you like Mexican food, you can't afford not to eat here. Speaking of afford, their prices are also reasonable and the food servings are huge.

Caliente!

By 2111tom |

this local gem is a great place to enjoy your local mexican food and other deserts, servings are big enough to share with a second person.

Authentic and fresh

By SuziQinTexas |

I usually go to El Ranchito, but decided to try something new and was not disappointed. The food is fresh and the tortillas are excellent. I had a combination plate with a guacamole tostado, beed taco, and sour cream enchilada. The guacamole was not the best I have ever had, but I liked the large amount of shredded lettuce on both it and the taco. Taco was very good. Sour cream enchilada was good, but the meat a bit dry. This restaurant is not terribly big and gets crowded early. The only thing I really disliked was the salsa -- not tasty at all. But, this will be a first choice for Mexican in Oak Cliff from now on. Recommended.

Best tortillas in town!

By TxTen4 |

Went here for lunch and was so glad to find this hidden gem. My glass was always kept full and the portions are huge! my wife and I split the fajitas and some of the best I have ever tasted. The homemade tortillas just put everything over the top. I would recommend this place to anybody visiting oak cliff or Dallas in general. Great staff, reasonable pricing, and good atmosphere.

My Favorite TexMex Restaurant

By Joanne T |

Having grown up with the best tamales, rice, beans, carne guisada and flour tortillas made by my tía, I have been on a quest to find approximations in Dallas/Fort Worth. I found it in the early 1990s at Gonzalez Tex Mex. The carne guisada tastes like my aunt's, with a savory gravy flavored with cumin, garlic and a bit of chili powder. Paired up with the best flour tortillas in DFW, and you've got a real treat. The flour tortillas are thick and pillowy with an almost buttery taste. When I tear off pieces of my tortilla to dip into my guisada, I'm in TexMex heaven! Lots of people like the cooked salsa, though it's not my favorite. The menudo is spicy, not spicy hot, with lots of tripas and hominy. It brings back memories of winter suppers in San Antonio. Flavored with extra lemon and onions, you have a rich soup. Prices and service have always been excellent, and I'll keep being a regular at Gonzalez's TexMex!
