Unacceptable Service on 6/17/20 After Many Years Of Great Service

By Karl |

I have been going to this restaurant for many years and had great service, but on Wednesday June 17, 2020 at approximately 4PM was totally poor service. The sign inside the said seat yourself, so we did. Absolutely no one greeted us as we walked in as in the past you always get greeted. We picked a table, sat their for half an hour, and got no service. It seemed if we were advisable as everyone else was getting service. We finally got up and left and the waitress said "thanks for coming and hope to see y'all again". We don't know if the restaurant was under staffed due to covid-19 or we were just simply ignored. We are planning to wait a couple of months to try again, but if this poor service happens again, we will never go back.

Disappointing

By Mercedes6623 |

Many years ago, my husband remembers going to GTC's when he returned from the Navy, in 1970. It has been around a long time. We had not returned ourselves in a good number of years. However, I really wanted chicken fried steak. Unfortunately, we arrived at the end of a really busy Friday lunch rush. I ordered the chicken fried steak with gravy on the side. The plate comes with two sides. I also asked for the green beans and a side of queso. The mashed potatoes are real and do taste good. The green beans have a lot of bacon and are also tasty. The best thing I had was the queso. Everything, except for the queso, was cold. The mashed potatoes, corn and green beans would have been very good but they were cold. Even the gravy was cold. The chicken fried steak was almost all gristle. I chewed and literally spit out most of the bite. I know not all pieces of meat turn out great but this was ridiculous!!! My husband ordered the hamburger steak with the mashed potatoes and gravy. The grilled onions were way overcooked. It also needed brown gravy. Lunch, for two, was $40 without tip. It looks like we will not be going back for another long time.

A burger fan's favorite place!

By Sarah E |

Good time Charlie's is definitely on my top 5 of burger places to eat in San Antonio, Texas. It is soooooooooo delicious!!! The onion rings are crunchy and thick - the way I prefer onion rings!! The staff is friendly too!

Family & Friends

By FloScott |

A rare experience for true home style cooking. Fresh vegetables all cooked to order. Chicken fried steak that fills your plate but is never greasy and the kids love to play on "la machines" while waiting to eat. PLUS, the location is close to S.Antonio's wonderful Zoo and the Witte (natural history) Museum. The staff never meet a stranger and the price is very reasonable, especially for families! Leave room for those deserts!!!

Great service

By J L |

The hostess greeted us soon as we walked in. We were seated promptly for lunch even though they were busy. Great country atmosphere. Chicken fried steak was real steak. I even liked the gravy. It's not Mom's but close. My associate had the burger because he had just had the chicken fried steak. I will be back

down home food

By travelteacher4 |

Just passing by Good Time Charlies, decided to stop. Down home food. Lots of meals with huge helpings of mashed potatoes. Waitress and service was very quick. I had chicken enchilidas smothered with a gravy type mixture and melted cheese. Good but not the authentic Mexican we were used to in the San Antonio area. Many meals were served with Texas toast. Quite inexpensive, $20 for 2 meals without drinks. Has a western style bar interior. I would guess many locals ate there.

Good time and better food

By Relampago Blanco |

Went for lunch. Onion rings were great as was the ever full ice tea. Everyone in our party enjoyed themselves. Garlic cilantro stuffed hamburger steak with cheese was very good. A nice family placeright by theSan Antonio Zoo.

GREAT Texas Comfort food!

GTC's is San Antonio's spot for casual dining and delicious comfort food. Friendly staff and varied menu. Start with nachos or

Best onion rings ever - even better than mine!

By pagesmorris |

We ate out on what may have been a porch at one time which made for good people watching. We split a plate of onion rings because the order is so huge, and they are so tender and good they are better than mine. I had the jalapeno queso chicken sandwich and my dad had the same but with a burger instead of chicken, and my mom had the fried mushrooms (which were also splendid) and we could not eat it all, there was just so much good food. The service was good, the atmosphere was funky, and the food was delicious.

We stopped here before going to the zoo. burgers were great and the steak fingers were yummy! The decor inside was very cool, alot to look at

Food quality marginal for prices charged

By Larry B |

My wife and I have been searching for a quality lunch at a diner or pub. We heard a radio advertisement about this place which advertised great food at reasonable prices. When we first arrived the building was not attractive but rather run down looking and old. Once entering after being skeptical the inside was old and run down as well. Looking at the menu we did not find reasonable lunch pricing as most entrées were $10 95 which did not include a drink. I ordered The Chicken fried steak and my wife ordered queso and chips @$5.95. We split the drink . The chicken fried steak was mostly breading very little actual meat and the gravy is more of a chicken tasting gravy instead of a quality cream gravy. The queso is just basic like Velveeta and rotel not what we are used to in San Antonio at the typical Mexican restaurants. The portion was small as well. You can get many quality orders of queso in San Antonio and really this place should take this item off their menu. When we paid our ticket with the quality tip I left the total was $27.00. The service was very good but good service does not offset inadequate food. I would pass on visiting this establishment again.

Huge Servings!!

By Maricela G |

Everything that came out of the kitchen looked awesome. I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was plenty to share. The food was really great.

Got salmonella at GTC's

By Jim N |

Took 3 business associates to Good Time Charles for lunch. We all ordered chicken dishes. I had chicken strip's. The others had the daily chicken special. It was "special" all right. We all came down with food poisoning. Three got sick while at the restaurant. I came down with salmonella that afternoon. Should have reported to health department but didn't. Can't recommend Good Time Charles.

Great fun

By texasjudye |

Always a good time there. We usually go once per year when in San Antonio with the family. Good food and good service.

Awesome as usual.

By reeltxn |

Awesome as usual. I had the jalapeño steak with fries and Texas toast. Incredible and perfectly cooked. Hubby had chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and toast. Damn that gravy!!! Love everything there. Service was awesome too.

Good food

By kh7473 |

Great food and friendly staff. Love the chicken fried steak and pork chops. This place is always busy and may have to wait for a table but it's worth it.

Did not live up to the hype

By Phil R |

We went here to have "the best chicken fried steak in San Antonio". Not! The service was great, but the food did not measure up. The green beans were tasteless and the corn was just right out of the can. My CFS was small, thin and tough. Probably won't go back.

very dissapointing

By kdogg6789 |

to start the service was iffy at best, the waitress asks whatta ya want to drink. My wife and i both ordered the chicken fried steak which the menu claimed the best in town, not so much. more breading not much steak and what steak there was it was tougher than a old boot.the alledged cream gravy was doughy cream of mushroom soup.Don't know if we will be going back anytime soon.

Pleasant Surprise

By Tammy L |

This place was such a fantastic, delicious find! We hadn't planned to stop, but we found it on our way back to the Riverwalk. Our lunch was delicious (chicken fried steak, hamburger, fried pickles) and the service was great!

Good Irish Fries

By PopularMMos |

This place has that comfortable and tasty feeling it's old time style but excellent food THE cheese fries are the BOMB

It’s a classic!

By Denise K |

Our hotel recommended them and we were wowed by our meals. My cilantro chicken salad was delicious and my husband enjoyed his Monterrey Jack chicken sandwich. Esmeralda our server was awesome and so were the bussers. The pecan pie a la mode was a great ending to our meal. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in San Antonio!

Just Good Food

By DtheDawg |

No frills, nothing fancy, just good food served with a smile and a relatively low check. I always go for the burger in one form or the other. You won't be disappointed.

Good homemade food!

By Helice |

My family and I visited here for dinner and we loved it. The waitress was great and very attending. The place is small, so it does get crowded quickly but the food is worth it!

There Are Better Choices

By J M |

Kind of a dive, that perhaps has an evening following of beer drinkers. I did have a great burger, but it was pricey given the atmosphere of the place. The waitress was very nice and funny. Perhaps more talkative than some might like.

Great food and service, favorite of locals

By John J |

Having not been home to Texas in many years, I wanted to hit a down-home place for some real comfort food. Good Time Charlies was recommended as just such a place and there were no disappointments at all! Jessica served us and she was absolutely the best. I had the steak fingers and gravy with mash potatos and my wife had the fried catfish. Both were very good. I was too full to try the deserts, but it is nap time!

Quaint place with great comort food

By jani s |

This is a very "feel good " restaurant. Wait staff is very friendly, food is tasty, and prices are good. Seating is a bit cramped and wait can be long at times but worth it. The fried mushrooms are a must try. The chicken fried steak is awesome !

Tried and True

By mccoycr1 |

This is a great local restaurant that serves up chicken fried steak and chicken fingers the way momma did. That's not all they have on the menu, mind you, but everything from that to fried catfish, the best burgers in town to their Mexican food special on Wednesdays, that's the only day you can get refried beans and rice, but don't tell them I told you. The food and the atmosphere are really great , only surpassed by their service.

Chicken Fried Steak

By Scott V |

Had an awesome chicken fried steak with really good gravy. My wife had a great hamburger. It was really crowded at lunch. A lady walking out said " try the CFS, with awesome gravy, so I did. She wasn't lying. Employees were super nice. It was also a bar, family friendly as well. I can imagine this place popping at night. You won't be disappointed. 🎉🤘🏻🍔🍻🍸

Chuck's a Decent Bang for the Buck

By OmniEpicurean |

It was a relative's birthday so we figured this was as good a place as any to celebrate. After all, it says so in their name. Several of us had been here over the years and usually enjoyed the food and drinks, especially before they covered and enclosed the tables that were facing Broadway. Many a pitcher was drained on a nice sunny Friday afternoon there. But I digress. The things that they do well here are certainly embodied in the fried mushrooms with gravy and the chips and queso for appetizers. In addition, over the years and through various surveys they have been "judged" to have one of the best burgers in town as well as chicken fried steak. We tried both today. The hamburger arrived as a small burned brillo pad on a nice home made bun that dwarfed it. To her credit, the waitress was quick to offer a replacement which came back as a definite improvement, but still rather small (a mere 5 ozs. before cooking) when considering such a lofty designation as best burger in SA. We all thought they had mistakenly brought out a child's portion. I guess that former designation has come and gone for a reason. The chicken fried steak was large and served plenty hot. Not the gargantuan size that Lulu's serves mind you, but still a half plate filling piece of tenderized steak. The flavor of the batter was good, the tenderness of the meat and the low gristle quotient very good. I liked my choice in picking this steak for lunch and finished the whole thing. Was this the best in SA, h-m-m-m? That is definitely a matter of some contention. As far as the rest of the plate goes, the green beans were canned and the mashed potatoes were a more disappointing watery than creamy rendition. That detracted somewhat from the total enjoyment of the dish. Loved the Texas toast though. I still had a good time at Charlie's, but I think I would save the food related superlatives for more deserving restaurant locales and tastier food preparations. Not a bad bang for the buck nor a place you would necessarily want to duck, but more to be fair than a challenge of dare, others opinions of "best in" you may want to Chuck.

Liked this place a lot

By MeryMeCo |

My strawberry margarita was awesomely good. Didn't have room for the whole thing. Hubby and I both had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. The gravy was just as awesome as the drink. The potatoes were just right and I'm not sure how they made those green beans so good. They looked plain but the beans were wonderful. I would definitely go back to try other menu items. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. Check it out.

Rude server

By bigshopper |

Our waitress was so rude, clearly we were putting her out just by our very presence. My husband and I were visiting for the weekend and my brother in law wanted to eat here because of the chicken fried steak. My husband did not like his - said it was just ok. I was rushed to order so got the grilled cheese sandwich. It was burned black on the outside but I dared not say a word! I only had water to drink (another annoyance for her) and the water tasted awful! I will not be back. Ever.

Good burger place

By guitarspeak |

Burgers and fries is where they excel. dine in or out right on Broadway. A classic and fun experience.

No plates or silverware

By traveler436z |

Came for the chicken fried steak and an indoor dining experience and to my surprise, the server brought our food to the table in styrofoam containers with plastic utensils. The server only returned when we got up to leave and then pulled the 4 corners of the plastic table covering together, wad the disposable container meal into ball and placed it into a nearby trash can. Food was below expectations. Maybe the chicken fried steak had too much foil and Styrofoam mixed in it. Trust me, you'll be looking for it as your cheepo plastic knife and fork cut the Styrofoam container into shreds. There are other restaurants in San Antonio that have opened their dining room and are using plates and silverware. If that is important to your dining experience, you might want recosider going to GTC.

Oldie, But Not a Goodie Anymore

By Gail W |

I keep returning to GTC's hoping to revive that "loving" feeling. For me, that existed in the 1980's. Unfortunately, GTC just doesn't have it any more. Oh, the onion rings are still really good and the Nuts, Bolts and Rings basket is worth ordering, but everything else has gotten tired. The chicken fried steak is floury with way too much batter and really tough meat. The burgers are so "juicy" they have to be eaten with a fork. Many of the sandwiches are way too soggy as well. And the margaritas.......too small and too expensive. If you want to experience the ambience of the "old" San Antonio, then come; have a beer, order some onion rings, but don't come for the food. It just ain't worth it!

Nothing fancy, but good casual food and cold beer

By Scott2211 |

It has been quite a while since we have visited GTC. The place hasn't changed much (food still great, staff still nice, and finally new/improved bathrooms)!

Quaint

By Lizzy51_12 |

This eatery has been around for a long time. It appears to be an old house added on to. The atmosphere is homey and the people are nice & polite. It can get crowded and noisy at times. The food was excellent and they go out of their way to make sure you get what you want to eat. The food was very good.

Great down-home cooking!

By Dave E |

This place has been around forever and is still serving up great food! The food is cooked fresh to order. Servers are super friendly and fast. Food is always served hot. We've been coming here for years and it's still great! The catfish or chicken fried steak are the best but the next time I'm trying their chili cheese fries.

Must visit while in the Alamo City!

By Brad H |

Everything we ate was terrific! Burgers, chicken fried steaks, sandwiches, all great! Try the fried zucchini and the onion rings, you won't be disappointed. The beer was cold the service was superb and the price was reasonable. We brought 11 people for lunch on a Saturday and everyone was pleased.

Just okay

By Dominic23 |

Have tried going several times. Each time is just okay. Maybe that's just my experience. The service is average and the food is nothing spectacular. I don't have too many complaints or any big ones. It's one of those places you ultimately go to if you live or work near downtown SA.

Good Chicken fried steak

By Mike301 |

Stopped in after reading article about best chicken fried steak in area. Was not disappointed. Got two dinners and took some home for next day. They were big and delicious. Good taste and seasoning. Are server Andrea was very good. Nice local feel to it. Not like a chain resturant. We would stop here again.

Wow!!!

By ladybugtx76 |

What a wonderful fun place to eat! It's obvious it's good when you find locals dining there! The food was fresh and very tasty! The service was friendly and wonderful. We really enjoyed the "nachos", as well as the drinks. The chocolate cake is always our downfall, but so worth the break in the diet! Yes.. we will return!

3pm lunch on Saturday

By Diane1437 |

Expected it to be slower but it was very crowded. Not a very big place. Parking ok. Had the chicken fried steak. It was great! The mashed potatoes were luke warm. My husband's catfish sandwich was great. Service was fair

Very average

By evelyn s |

The food was nothing special, a lot of fried stuff smothered with cheese. If you like high cholesterol meals then this is the place to go. About the only thing healthy that I have found was the steamed broccoli as as side order. Prices are quite reasonable and service was good.

Love Charlies

By Karon W |

We go to Charlies restaurant every year when we come in for vacation... I am from Colorado. They have the best chicken fried chicken and gravy. Very friendly staff and bar tenders too. Very comfortable smaller place and great food. Love the old pictures on the wall. Very easy access. It is off Broadway and Mulberry by the park.

BEST EVER ONION RINGS!!

By J C |

This restaurant is a San Antonio staple. Always great burgers- and if you really wnat to indulge in the BEST EVER ONION RINGS without undue levels of guilt, the steamed vegetable plate is pretty awesome as well! (No, Really!!)

You get what you come for and it's pretty darn good.

By mikel68 |

Friendly, fast service and good food. Place has been here for a while and the food is the reason. My daughter and I ordered steak fingers for lunch. It was well more than both of us could finish. My wife ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, which she only ate half and took home the rest. Thank God this is chicken fried steak you cut with a knife. Meaning real meat!!! Not something killed in tenderizer. How can you go wrong...on the Steak Fingers for lunch there were 5 larger steak fingers, green beans, mashed potatoes and Texas toast, and those were just my choices. We will be back.

Going there to eat brfore Spurs game

By treborzerp |

This place is a museum of old pictures of San Antonio in the 1900...the food menus are full of great comford dishes , service is great they even have patio if you like to eat in the great out doors

Great Fun and Texas Hospitality, and Food, too!!!!

By itihoame2 |

Went there on Feb. 5th for my 75th birthday. From the moment we entered, the waitresses were great. You felt at home!! For and appetizer, we had onion rings. that was like a meal and was the best I've ever had, don't pass it up!! I opted for their famous chicken fried steak, and was very happy with it. They even brought me a delicious birthday treat, which was hot brownies with ice cream!! What a great dinner with my friends!!

Feb 8

By Vic L |

Stopped in for a mid-afternoon break and refresher. We ordered two draft beers and an order of onion rings. The beers were served in ice cold frosted mugs and the order of onion rings was huge, matter of fact, so large we could only finish about half the order. We were lucky we stopped in mid-afternoon, since by the time we left the waiting list was out the door. The burgers served at the table next to us appeared wonderful, will have to try them next.

Dinner

By Jesse H |

Excellent, casual atmosphere with amazing food and drinks. The service is great, and their portions are hearty. Definitely a good place to add to the rotation.

Boy Howdy!

By Ptx |

Best fried chicken, white gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans EVER!!! Not only that, if you have a birthday in your group, ask Cowboy to sing Happy Birthday to you!! That's the icing on the cake right there!

Good food but a wait.

By William L |

We stopped for lunch after a visit to the Doseum, at the lunch hour it was packed. We did not have to wait long for a seat but it took a little longer for the food. The food itself was very good and the wait staff was attentive.

Love the casual atmosphere

By gleefulexplorer |

We tried the famous chicken-fried steak, which was very good. Good fries, decent salad, and very prompt friendly service. It made a convenient place for a meal the same day we visited the Botanic Garden. We loved reading the wall and would have enjoyed returning for live music they sometimes have there.

Chicken Fried Steak

By Robert T |

Went there for Dinner ..Had Chicken Fried Steak Green Beans and Mashed Potatoes Was disappointed in the quality of the food

Chewy Chicken Fried Steak, Slow Service

By DannyAMZ |

Disappointed. I love chicken fried steak. It's a southern thing so we know good from bad. This place boasts, but it was a total disappointment - small, chewy meat, lots of breading. The service was very slow and it wasn't that busy when we went early Friday dinner. My go to place for CFS is Bud Jones on the south side. New favorite as of 2016 is Maverick Grill in Floresville - thanks to my brother for recommending - worth the drive (skip the mac-n-cheese, tasted like boxed, go for the baked tater).

Down home cooking!

By ABE49 |

Love this place for good, old fashioned home style cooking. Try the double pork chop dinner. Hamburgers big enough to challenge some eaters also. Nothing fancy, just good. Always great wait staff as well.

Fantastic down home cooking

By Traveling-Texan3 |

Been going here for years and Good Time Charlie's is consistently great! Top of the line chicken fried steak, steak fingers, and pork chops. Best cream gravy around, too! Those plates come with their mashed potatoes, green beans, and Texas toast. Mmmmmm! The atmosphere is super laid back. We often travel across town to get to this delicious stop!

Great Place

By 252jan253 |

We stopped in here on the way back to our hotel from visiting the Botanical Gardens. I was very impressed. Prices were very reasonable, much cheaper than the riverwalk and the food was great. I ordered catfish which was huge and my husband had a burger. Service was great! If you want a local place, then this is the place to go.

55 cent extra ranch dressing

By gloriaw259 |

We have patronized this restaurant many times.. since Covid began haven’t been there. Had lunch on Friday 12/17/21. Food was good for us all and service was good. Our complaint is this: we were charged .55 cents extra for additional ranch dressing and 3.25 for fries accompanying a sandwich which we were not told it would be extra. Coffee also was not fresh. I realize it’s been a couple tough years for food industry but to keep a profitable and sustainable business you don’t nickel and dime people! We work hard to afford a meal out! Have to think hard about a future visit here.

By Vic L |

Only thing that would have given this place more atmosphere would have been sawdust on the floors, like we used to have. Good service. Good prices. The "chicken fried steak" had a good flavor but could have been tenderized more. Onion rings are of the thick cut variety, but plentiful portion for five persons.

Great Food

By tbsa |

The food was great, seemed that our server was a bit too young or maybe too distracted by a gentleman. Food came to us in bits and pieces. I had to ask for napkins, and water. I will go back because the food over shadowed the service

Wish there was a four and three-fourths rating!

By ladybugtx76 |

While in town for business, we were looking for a good chicken fried steak. We definitely found it here! Really good food here! Excellent service! We always try to find a place where the locals eat, and we found it here! This was so good, we came back the night night and had one of the best homemade hamburgers we have eaten. And after these two meals, we had fresh homemade chocolate cake and pecan pie. As you can tell, we are now fans, and yes we will return!

Seems to get better with age!

By Peter P |

We visited again after a two year lapse (been away) and if anything Good Time Charley’s has gotten better. I’m a tough sell, I still upped my rating this time by one star. We visited at the height of Friday Lunch. The place was jammed, but we were able to sneak into a small table for two and loved every minute of it. The hostess is still as friendly and sassy. The waitresses are helpful, attentive, and quick. Our food was johnny-on-the-spot fast, hot, and tasty. This isn’t fine cuisine but it’s the best of homemade flavors prepared with attention to detail. The mashed potatoes are real. The green beans were canned — but who cares — it’s a neighborhood joint and for what it is, and what you’re paying it’s perfect! I won’t say that their Chicken Fried Steak is the best in Texas, but it’s very, very good. My wife’s special of the day was excellent as well. We never have enough room for dessert.

Good food...hasty, even hectic, service...

By RedPondRanch3080 |

Good Time Charlie's makes one of the best chicken fried steaks I've ever tasted, and that's why I keep going back. It's so popular at lunchtime, however, that I have to recommend finding another time of the day to visit. Their gravy is something they can be justifiably proud of, but not to the point where it's served dripping off the plate. My waitress shoved my plate at me so quickly that I actually got a big glob of gravy down the front of my shirt! I'm pretty sure she saw it, but she was in such a hurry that she didn't offer an apology or even an extra napkin. I saw several other plates coming out of the kitchen with gravy literally dripping off them. Presentation is important, folks, and when part of the presentation is decorating your patrons with gravy, the dining experience loses something, in my opinion. As I said, it's crazy crowded during the lunch hour. The decor is country kitsch, the noise level is impressive, parking can be a challenge, but again...it's worth going just for the chicken friend steak. Just don't go at lunch!

Fried Porkchops

By 4ElevenTechs |

The fried pork chops are thick and golden brown with a side of mashed potatoes and corn. The service was quick and friendly and everyone at my table was satisfied. Thank you GTC for another great experience.

Depends What's Ordered

By Deacon252 |

My wife and I spent the morning at the San Antonio Zoo and were looking for a café for a quick lunch when we spotted Charlie's. My wife ordered the BLT which proved to be excellent with a literal ton of bacon and all the right "fixin's", I on the other hand ordered a cheeseburger which turned out to be overcooked and quite dry, so be careful what you order.

Great comfort food, very pleasant atmosphere: don't let the outside fool you!!

By Thomas B |

This was a nice spot, great folks and a good meal. If you like good ole fashioned comfort food with plenty of TVs and good smells, you will like this spot. I had not been back here since basic and when I did, it all came rushing back. Now its a steady for future missions. Thank you Charlies!

Good Food at Decent Prices

By ProfHam |

We've been going to GTC for over twenty-five years. The chicken fried steak is one of the best in town, and the burgers are always good. A Texas staple: margaritas, chips and salsa, is something special also. My only problem with the place is the noise. It can get very crowded and very loud in the main dining room, and if you're going to sit and visit you can end up yelling at each other. Sit outside or in the front dining room if you can.

Best fried onion rings in San Antonio

By BBTX |

I love this casual restaurant because of its atmosphere, menu and food. There are good hamburgers and hot dogs as well as daily lunch plates with veggies. It is usually packed for lunch during the week.

Let the Good Time roll

Excellent comfort food; great menu variety; attentive service. Top choice of my ninety+ old father: he ought to know by now...

Not All That

By Oscar J |

Overpriced & waitress wasn't very engaged with our table. Food was good, however, over priced. Chips & salsa stale.

Great Burger, Friendly

By WakePhil |

This place is walking distance from the Do Seum museum we visited with the kids. They advertise as having the best chicken fried steak. While I didn't find that to be true, it was good, just not otherwise notable. I did think their burgers were excellent. Our kids were a little rowdy/loud, but they were patient and nice.

Good Homestyle Food

By Mark G |

We have family in San Antonio who recommended we eat at Good Time Charlie's. We met there for dinner on a Saturday evening. The place was packed, but we were able to get a table for our large group that was wheelchair accessible. The main entrance is not accessible, but there is another door that is close by that is accessible. The food and service were good. The chicken fried steak was huge. We would eat here again.

Great old-timey atmosphere

By Gretchen Ruth |

Had burgers and onion rings at Good Time Charlie's. While the burgers were good, they weren't my favorite (they weren't greasy enough, so I'm sure that's why many people love them!). Onion rings were really tasty...the breading was just right. We were seated in the "porch" area and it was a great, summery atmosphere. Our waitress was happy and pleasant and efficient and we really liked her (I wish I remembered her name ... but I do remember that she had fun, bright red hair!).

Good food no frills

By steve3mm |

After flying into SA we had a couple places picked to go to dinner. One place had no tables and the other had a 45 minute wait. Anyways we happen to drive by Charlie's and thought we give it a shot. The place is not a high class place. I would classify as a family restaurant. The service was great and our food came out very fast which was nice since we were hungry. Wife had the sirloin and I had the chicken chalupa. She loved her steak but my chalupa was good but not spicy as expected.

Should Have Read TA First

By TahoegpSA |

If I had read the reviews before dining, I would have known to order the chicken fingers or a burger. I'll know better next time. Service was good. The Salmon patties not so good. Texas toast was a bit soggy. Mashed potatoes and gravy and corn all were tasty. Would have been good with chicken. I'll go back to try the chicken. Quaint little place on Broadway.

Best Cheeseburger I have had in a very long time!

By SnapDragonfly |

If you’re looking for a good burger, look no further than Good Time Charlie’s. I ordered mine medium well and it was cooked to perfection. The flavors melded together perfectly. And the fries? Yum! The server was extremely nice and she seemed to really enjoy her job. I have no idea why anyone would go to Whataburger when Good Time Charlie’s is right across the street. Wish they had a location in San Diego:-)

By far the best burger in San Antonio

By Israelight007 |

I got the Nacho Cheese burger with extra jalopenos. and it was the large one! It was ginormous. and everybody at the table envied it. But it was amazing. As well as the onion rings. It is a must go to place! located next to the Witte Museum.

We had a party of nine, showed up at a busy lunch rush, and they bent over backwards to accommodate us with a minimal wait. The service was attentive but not overbearing. The food was true Southern comfort food. The portions were very generous and the prices more than reasonable for what we got. I'm saving this place on my favorite list!

fast lunch

By Deborah D |

Stopped inbetween Wittee and DoSeum. Food is alsways great and very large portions. Lots of great choices and lots of parking. We were there about 12:30 so had to wait for a place to sit but service was reasonably paced.

GOOD FOOD & ATMOSPHERE.

By SNAKEBIT715 |

This is a kinda out of the way place but well worth finding it. Food is good, reasonably priced, great mixed drinks & beer. Highly reccommend for dinner & a good time.

Where the locals eat!

By CRIO244 |

They are open late, I recommend their chicken strips, fried mushrooms & banana split pie!!! It's a small slice but oh so good. For the last 10yrs the waitress's have never been on the friendly side but they are efficient. Super casual environment, near San Antonio Zoo & Whitte Museum.

San Antonio Classic

By kittysquirrel |

Was the choice for dinner with out of town visitors last night. Though all of us had lived in SA at some point, none had been to this iconic grill of 35 years. It is casual, a very understated local. We sat on the enclosed porch. Alice was super, giving us enough attention, but not hovering or rushing us out. Chicken Fried Steak is their special, we decided not to tackle it. The chicken fingers were very good with super mashed potatoes & white gravy. The green beans were ok. The Crispy Chicken Salad was huge and enjoyable as was the Enchiladas Charlie's Style.

So so good

By Sabrina Opalinski |

This place is a must visit. Completely enjoyed everything about this place...the food, the wait staff, and the ambience. Highly recommend

Good food.

By Mary Jo V |

After seeing this restaurant advertised on TV we wanted to try it out. We were first disappointed when we walked in as it is an older establishment, but we were pleasantly surprised by the food. Though we had mostly burgers, they were delicious. Staff could have been a little more friendly.

Good Time Indeed!

By Hal K |

Quick Lunch. First time for a quick lunch. Wow! was this place ever packed with folks!! The wait was short, and our party of 3 were quickly seated at a table and each of us ordered the Daily Special, Enchillada Platter with rice and beans. The food was brought quickly. The portion size was huge for lunch, but amazingly, it quickly disappeared from our plates. Everyone enjoyed their meal.

Good time crowded

By Thelma P |

Lunch at noon and all the tables taken by contented people eating and talking. Chicken fried steak with sides of mashed potatoes and corn was very good. An order of onion rings can easily serve four or more. Good food, good service, good company.

piping hot

By Corky G |

Got there just before the linch crowd and had the children fried steak, fries, green beans. Nice and hot, but gravy a little sweet, not to my taste. Good service, a little pricy for lincj.

Comfort food!

By Ylaní H |

Nice area but a spot that is always full. That is more of a positive thing, of course. Service is always good and so is the food. Love the chill atmosphere as well.

Good eating

By lucsimsthomas |

This place has great food for really good prices and the staff is friendly and helpful. It seems to be a little hard to get a straw every time we go, but other than that we have no complaints. The new restrooms are a great addition since the old ones were unique in some not so good ways. My husband and I both had grilled pork chops and loved them.

Great Food

By dede00990 |

This place was a nice kind of down home feel. Had the onion rings and they were good. The customer service was decent. I had the fried catfish and it was really good. They vegetables did not have any seasoning that would be my only complaint. The chicken fried steak was good and the gravy was great. Took a root beer float to go and that was good also. The prices were not too bad.

Eclectic American Food

By Just_A_Bubba_1960 |

The eclectic atmospere at this restaurant was unfortunately better than the quality gf the food. We stopped here for dinner after a University function. I had the Charley's salad, which unfortunately had a really dry piece of chicken on it, otherwise the rest of the salad was pretty good. My spouse had a kebob which she rated as very average. My daughter had the chicken fried steak which she enjoyed, so we theorize the fried food is what they are known for. Going to have to try this place one more time and order the onion rings which looked delicious.

You should eat here weekly

By Jason H |

Great burgers best in town! The atmosphere is great and the staff are even better. The fish and shrimp, chicken fried steak, and the burgers are always a must have!

Good Home Cooking.

By Dustin D |

This place is your traditional down home southern food and is very good. Have gone a few times and had the country fried steak and chicken fingers. The chicken fingers were excellent very moist and delicious if I were to rate on this meal alone the restaurant would have been a 4 or 5. As good as the fingers were, the steak left something to be desired as it was was very tough which ultimately reduced the rating. I will return.

Good Time Charlies, Bad Time for us.

By concanlover |

You have got to be kidding. Went in to a madhouse atmosphere where the greeter was a little cool. Asked if there was any problem using the Entertainment book coupon (as I patted my cell phone, indicating that it was online). The waitress who was nice and evidently fairly new went to the manager and discussed how the coupon worked. No problem. Ordered the "world famous" chicken fried steak dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans for my hubby and myself. read more » It would have been a steal at buy one, get one free. Extremely fast service from the kitchen to the table. Under the mass of cream gravy was chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. I took about 5-7 bites and heard the staff discussing the Entertainment Book and so I pulled up my coupon on my Android and handed it to my waitress. Well, to my shock and embarrassment the manager was saying "no, it has to be a printed coupon". I got up and went to the manager who was in the middle of the restaurant and who was loud enough that most people seated around us could hear the conversation that was taking place. She said that in order to use the coupon, since they don't have a scanner, that the coupon would have to be printed. I explained that is why I asked about using it off my phone in the first place. We argued for a bit. I finally told her. I will pay for my husbands dinner and you can take mine and toss it. She had totally embarrassed me and humiliated me and caused me to lose my appetite. My husband was beginning to fume. I went back and sat down at the table, pushed my dinner aside. The waitress came shyly to the table and picked it up and took it to the kitchen. I asked for a container to go since this had also spoiled my husband' dinner so we thought we would take it home with us. Here comes the manager with a hand written note on the back of a bar receipt, telling me that the next time that we came in we could have a free dinner. I looked at her and asked her if she was aware that I just gave up my free dinner, I didn't ask for a free dinner, I don't need a free dinner and wouldn't ever be back again to use the free dinner. She said she was sorry but she assumed that I had the coupon book. I asked if she had ever heard the definition of assume, and she had. She shrugged and walked off. To be honest about the food, the few bites of the chicken fried steak was mediocre, have had much better at Earl Abel's and Little Red Barn, the potatoes were decent, never got to touch the canned green beans. Oh well. Definitely marking that one off the list. FOREVER. Probably still in business due to tourist business, it definitely wasn't for the warm hospitality shown to us or anyone I saw walk in. It is an old mainstay of Broadway but evidently the owner and upper management aren't aware of the goings on in their establishment. After we walked out I told my husband I should have at least taken the free dinner and have given it to a homeless person. Hindsight. They probably would have treated him no worse than they treated us.

Great Home Style Food

By 42PinkGirl |

My husband and I always enjoy eating here when we're in the area. Friendly and fast service. Great selection. He had the grilled pork chops (2 come in the order), homemade mashed potatoes, green beans with Texas toast. Very tasty and juicy, sides large portions. I had grilled chicken strips, broccoli, side salad with Texas toast. Side salad & broccoli were also large portions and very filling. We enjoy the atmosphere, proximity to Brackenridge Park, fast friendly service and great food. We always actually have a "good time" eating at Good Time Charlies!

Great food, close to downtown, and open late!

By Chadsaeswt |

I love GTC! Grat onion rings and other fried fare. Had the chips, hot sauce, and queso Sat night. Excellent! We also had chicken fried steak. Always good as well as the burgers and tex mex enchiladas. Stays open late and is always full of characters.

FUN!

By M S |

We're TX tourists and decided on this restaurant because of the recommendation of a worker at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. It was a good choice, with popular local food. Our waitress and the decor added so much to our fun of discovering TX, that we talked about our TX eating experience at Good Time Charlies' for several days. (I wish I could remember our waitress' name. She's from Montana... Michigan??) NOT fancy. Not touristy. Just regular food, served hot and plentiful and quickly. Fresh vegetables, too! Yep, we'd go back!

Dinner

By Ray02rodriguez |

This was my first time at Good Time Charlie's. The bar and grill is easy to find and is a popular restaurant. The onion rings were plentiful. My chicken fried steak was awesome. You got a meat flavor in every bite. Service was good with friendly staff. We will return.

Average Food, Nothing Special

By @alanshoho |

After playing golf at Brackenridge Golf Course, my friend wanted to go eat at Good Time Charlie's. The food is average and there is nothing particularly worth coming back to this place again. I had a patty melt and he had a cobb salad. The patty melt was average at best. The Cobb salad looked okay and was big.

Disappointing, chicken fried steak is not up to hype

By James P |

Both my wife and I tried the chicken fried steak, and it was very poor. Very thick piece of meat, more tough than other local places, breading was not crisp and fell off of steak, green beans out of can and bland, potatoes got their flavor from the gravy. Onion rings were good and a large portion. Service was good. Many other local places with better chicken fried steak - Alamo Café, Richter's Antlers Café in Spring Branch. Won't go back any time soon - better places to eat for the same money.

CFC....going downhill.

By Jcsflyboy |

I've been here many times. But, not in the last year. The Chicken Fried Steak USED to be great. But this time, the breading has exceeded the size of the meat by 50%. Still a thin breading, but it looked humongous on the plate....half breading, half meat. the onion rings are good. The one good thing? The grilled pork loin was fantastic. They say on the menu, the CFC is best in SA.....not anymore in my book.

Good Time Charlie's

By gram07_10 |

The food was really good. My 2 year old grandson wanted raw broccoli and nothing else. They brought out a huge spear of raw broccoli. I appreciated they accommodated a 2 year old's unusual request.

Stay at Ft Sam Houston RV Park

By rickdel |

Good time Charles Bar and Grill is a small rustic restaurant that has large portion plates of delicious food from steak fingers to chicken fried steak to hamburgers at a reasonable price. Very popular so go early! Well worth the wait.

You got to eat here

By bobal59 |

We had the hamburger steak and it was great, lots of onions, food was hot. Service staff was great and very fast even though it was full. A very nice local restaurant and lots of food, not fancy just a relaxed atmosphere. We always eat here when we are in the area. It is worth the trip to this restaurant.

Pretty good burger

By Michael J |

We got burgers and beer at this place and were pleased with the food and service. The food was a little pricy but you expect that on the Riverwalk. My burger, the juicy Lucy, was excellent. All in all, a good experience at this sports bar.

Good local place

By Regina L |

We found Good Time Charlie's on way back from museum. Had the chicken fried steak and hamburger. Quick and good. Nice change from river walk.

ALL EIGHT OF US THAT ATE . WANTED MORE! I EVEN ORDERED MORE TO GO!

By Les G |

GOOD TIME CHARLIE'S IS JUST THAT. A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN HAVE A GOOD TIME. I'VE BEEN EATING HERE SINCE 1985. THE ONLY PLACE WHERE EVERY ITEM ON THE MENU IS ABOVE YOUR TASTE BUDS. LISTEN " THE FOODS SO GOOD. YOU'LL FIX YOUR BUDGET TO MAKE WEEKLY VISITS LIKE ME.

Onion rings and service are great!

By Tarri H |

Chicken fried steak w green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy and Texas toast. The onion rings are really, really good and a HUGE portion. The chicken fried steak was adequate but not up to the billing of Best in San Antonio. Potatoes are watery and flavorless. I don't understand the green beans and the Texas toast was soggy. The beer, Lone Star, was very cold!

Great local eats.

By TravelingLeigh70 |

The chicken fried steak is great! Onion rings are delicious! Servings are large enough to share. Go early or you will have to wait.

Needs some cleaning

By Ken S |

First time there. The food was decent and service was good. Looking at the dining room floor it seems they need to do some cleaning. The exposed concrete was black and the bottom of the trash cans were filthy. Needs some maintenance

A place we miss!

By Sara C |

We lived at Fort Sam Houston In early '90's, ate there often. Best Tortilla Soup ever. Got the recipe before moving away...I still make it! The owner gave me his mom's recipe for the Texas Sheet Cake, in her hand writing. I still have it, and make it for my husband's birthday often. I'm sure management has changed, along with the food, but we still have the experience through the recipes, and loved eating there for 5 years!

Meeting with friends

By Terry D |

Met with a group of friends at Good Time Charlies in San Antonio. The place was clean and the waitress was friendly. However, my food was anything but good. I ordered a fish sandwich. It was huge and stacked high with iceberg lettuce and hot house tomatoes. It was not at all good and tasted fishy and old. Could have even been a carp or some other unwanted fish. Could not finish it. A few others in the group ordered pork chops and they said they were fine. From what I have experienced do not order fish at this place.

Good times had by all

By ladygo17 |

I frequented Charlie's when I was attending school up the road at Incarnate Word. It was the spot for late night dining after rehearsals and where we would converge after opening night for pitchers of Shiner Bock. I still dream about their cream gravy, which paired perfectly with their delectable chicken strips. The staff was friendly and efficient, and knew us as reliable customers, even if we were poor students.

Good Times Charlie's does not have the Blues!

By Funtimegirls |

I was at this place in 1983 and loved it. Thought I would give it shot again, and it was wonderful. Service was great, drinks are great, burgers are great. Onion rings homemade and wonderful.

Not what it used to be!

By txsage |

We were in SA to visit the Witte. I wanted my grandchildren to experience their dad's favorite childhood restaurant. I was so disappointed. Hadn't been there in years. My chicken fried steak was fine; gravy was delicious, but not enough to go with the taters, which were lukewarm. Luckily, my grandson loved them, and ate most cause his enchilada was TOO HOT. Seriously...put down a HOT plate in front of a 2 yr-old?? "Top plate is hot"...NO KIDDING! Price for 1 enchilada...no sides, except toast (?) $5.25. I could go on, but we aren't going back!

Avoiding traffic

By Kevin M |

On way back from getting stuff out of our totaled car decided to avoid traffic and stop here. Started off with onion rings and a salad. Wow great the ranch dressing is great. Followed that up with chicken fingers and margaritas. Can’t go wrong.

Didn't think it was what the ads said

By Misterbunns |

Saw ads on tv and the crowds, but it wasn't all the hype said it was. The chicken fried steak had to have shrunk because almost a quarter of it was empty. Nothing spectacular about the gravy as well, beans and potatoes were like they were out of a can or box. Tried it... will move on... Have had many more better than this place.

Good comfort food, somewhat chaotic, always seems to be a line, great service

By TXLUV2TVL |

Be prepared for a wait to get in. Our party of five waited about 25 minutes to get in, but most restaurants around this area have a wait, so that wasn't a big deal. Also be prepared that the tables are crammed in a tight as you can, don't expect to get a private romantic table for two. You will be right next to other diners. That said, we were surprised with that many tables and diners we were able to converse normally at the table and the noise level was not excessive. This is the place for serious comfort food. We started with the NUTS, BOLTS & RINGS appetizer (Zucchini, mushrooms, & onion rings, served with cream gravy and ranch dressing) which was delicious and then ordered a round of Chicken Fried Steak (we are in Texas after all!). Wait staff was friendly and service was very quick. While the place was crowded and there was a line, we were not rushed in any way by the wait staff to hurry and free up our table. Yes, will likely stop in again when in San Antonio.

Amazing gravy, Great tenders, but soggy burger buns

By The Cycling Foodie |

G.T. Charlies has amazing service and good food. The fries were great but the buns on the burger were soggy. They would have been perfect despite that. The country gravy was so ooooo good. I could put that on everything!! Get the tenders and gravy. 3 burgers, a side of fries, and one kids tender with 2 adult drinks was $50 including tip. Pricey tenders and burgers. Fries not included with burgers.

Home Type Cooking Downtown Area

By 2011hmc2011 |

We live in a world of fast food and bland quick food fixes. Especially in the urban areas where chain food places abound. However there is a special mention here at Good Time Charlie's. This place has been here a long time. The reason is not so much the "Good time" but the food. It is a home made type approach to food. Good ole thick Chickenfried Steak with heavy Mashed and gravy with Southern Style Gravies. Fresh Green Beans all the time. They have a good T-Bone too. Rustic with older wood floors and historical pictures dot the walls. Great service anywhere in the building. The back room gets a bit cold in the Winter so sit up front. It's a good bet when you are tired of the same ole Jack in the Box and similar places and want real food at a reasonable price.

Chicken Fried Steak

By nlamoureux |

After years of seeing their TV advertisement, we decided to try the chicken fried steak before a downtown concert. The staff was friendly, the food was good (not great), and the service was quick. I will come back and try their reputable catfish.

It's a Good Place To Eat

By Gerardo G |

The hamburgers were fantastic. They tasted better than average, but the real reason I give it 5 stars are the waitresses..they are very cutie and very accommodating, especially the one with long black hair she went out of her way to give us a take home container even when she was busy...thanks...we'll be going back very soon..

May 2

By Vic L |

Still good food. Wanted to try the chicken fried steak since it was voted the best in San Antonio. Two of us really enjoyed the meal, but it would be hard to rate it the best." The bean & avacado vegetarian burger was excellent as was the hamburger and onion rings and french fries. Better than most places in the "Pearl" and near Breckenridge park.

Good food, Sassy Waitress, Luv it!

By Peter P |

We stopped here of a recent Sunday noon after seeing their store front declaration that they have been voted the best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas. We were greeted by the cheeriest hostess we've met in a long time, our waitress had plenty of attitude to spare and we knew we were off to a good start. The chicken fried steak was indeed tasty. However it could have used another go-round with the meat tenderizer, and everything on both my plate and my wife's Salmon Patties plate lacked seasoning. The food was well prepared, just a little bland. We tried a piece of their Bananas Split Pie and it was Ok -- not great, not bad. Just OK. The 'whipped cream' on top was cool whip and the crust was pretty broken up before it arrived at the table. I want to give this a higher rating but the food wasn't as good as the staff. Sorry, Charlie....

A Local Favorite

By Evieb43 |

This restaurant has been in business since 1979. If the food was not good, this business simply would not have thrived throughout the years. I love their steak fingers. Although, it is about 20 miles from my home, I go there at least two times a month. The food is always fresh and served hot. There is nothing fancy about this place, but it is clean and the service is good.

Great Hamburger

By danidb518 |

My husband saw an article in a magazine while waiting for an oil change about this place so we decided to try it. So glad we did! We had warm homemade like tortilla chips with salsa and queso Huge portion, wish the waitress would have told us how large it was since we ordered other food to try and split in half- A cheeseburger that was very good and three piece fried chicken tenders, very large, and crispy with good mash potatoes! And an order of onion rings, very good, not greasy at all! And a piece of warm chocolate cake, sheet cake, like the Coca Cola cake with pecans in the icing. Everything was really good!

Plentiful and filling

By redhousecat |

According to the local reviews, this place is supposed to have great burgers. I haven't had the opportunity to try them yet, but I do know that the steak fingers and catfish are pretty good. The hot dogs are served open face on a hamburger bun, so that was a little weird. The draft beer selection is lacking, but they have all the usuals in bottle. The service has always been great and we never have to wait too long for food. Having just moved to the area, this is our go-to place when we want a good, quick meal. Its only about 3 miles north of downtown and easy to get to via auto or bus. There is even a bike route.

Fun place to dine

By torino7788564 |

Casual atmosphere and friendly folks, had me a chicken fried steak and was very filling with a thick gravy. My wife had the burger and she said was very juicy, servers did a great job of coming by and checking on us. Nice crowd and very comfortable atmosphere.

Good Homecooking Food

By Craig37 |

We went to Good Time Charlie's Sunday evening and had a good time. 3 out of 4 had the chicken fried steak which they all said was very good. I had a taste of it and agreed. The gravy was especially good. I had a chopped steak with queso on it and they messed up and brought chicken instead. I pointed out the mistake and in no time corrected it and I had what I had ordered. My 4 year grandson ordered cheese sandwich until my wife mentioned they had shrimp and he quickly changed his mind, the boy loves shrimp. The only problem was the mix up but they fixed it right away. Will go back maybe soon.

Great Mother's day lunch!

By Susan M |

My mother has been asking about this place ever since she has seen the commercials so we took her here for Mother's Day. I can't believe I have never been here! It is across from the Kiddie Park on Broadway. Ample parking but you may have to wait for a table. Since my mom is handicapped we waited outside in the car and the hostess told me our table should be ready in 20 to 30 minutes and that she would hold the table until we could get my mom in. In about 20 minutes I went in and the table was ready as she promised. We were seated and given our menus and drink orders were taken. The food is outstanding. My husband is still talking about his chopped steak and my dad who never finishes anything gobbled down his hamburger and fries. My mom had the jalapeño chicken con queso which she loved. The waitress was kind enough to put the jalapeños on the side. : ) I had the chicken enchiladas and they were divine! Everybody was so happy with their choices. The staff is like nothing you have ever seen. They all work together and that place runs as smooth as silk! This place is very, very busy so for us to get such great service is a real plus! The atmosphere is fun and the place is very clean.

Good Home Cookin'

By TTexasTom |

Just good simple hearty country grub. All the usual suspects of great home cooking on this menu. Hearty portions. Suits to shorts. Kids to seniors. All seem comfortable here.

Good Time, Charlie's

By Traveler1009 |

I have been eating here for years. My first experience was in 1978 while stationed at Ft. Sam. Good food and lots of it. I did two more tours in Texas, retired here and stayed. Charlie's is still one of my favorites. Uniquely San Antonio, it is an older wood frame building. The "front porch" is closed in and serves as a dining area. The floor here isn't quite level, but who cares? You aren't going to eat the floor. The wait staff are warm and friendly. The food is "down home cooking" and the servings will satisfy a hungry man. One of our famous dinners is a chicken fried steak. The white gravy served with it here is nothing short of awesome! Hamburgers? You bet! Bring your appetite but you don't have to hock the ranch to pay the bill. I am a chocolate lover. Their chocolate brownie is as good as it is large. It it located on Broadway at Mulberry, near the zoo.

Great service!

By destinationbueno |

We decided to go to Good Time Charlie to get away from the Riverwalk. We had our 2 year old with us. My complaint overall was the lack of healthier side options. That being said, the service was great and the food was good. I'd go there again as long as I wasn't trying to eat healthy.

Good burgers in a neat atmosphere

By Johanne H |

We were seated in the porch area of the restaurant which has a neat atmosphere. I had the bacon cheeseburger, which was good, but not the best in town. The fries do not come with the burgers, you must buy them separately- the fries there are average,I wouldn't get them again. The onion rings do stand out though, and we thoroughly enjoyed them.Beers are $5 a bottle, expensive for a burger joint. Their frozen margaritas were not good at all, we could not drink them- not sure what they use as their mix and the texture was very grainy , not smooth as you would expect them to be. The waitress was kind enough to remove them from our bill. I'm not sure I would return to this restaurant, as there are plenty of other burger places in San Antonio that deliver a better burger and much better fries.

Tight fit

By Mariah S |

I’m not hungry anymore. Fish special was fine. Good waitress kept our tea and water replenished. It’s not easy to maneuver around tightly packed tables, and this seems to have the hostess in a somewhat cranky state.

Waitress too much in a hurry--but the food is good

By giadaluca |

We frequent this place. Their chicken fried steak is one of the best. Their gravy...excellent! We ordered the stack of onion rings and our stack was rather small compared to another table who ordered after us. Good nonetheless. We had a waitress named Jessica, whom we've had before. She seemed to be in a hurry. She hardly stood still long enough to take our order. Always looking around & seemed distracted. She would only ask us if we would "good" as she's walking by. When we called for her attention, she came, but again was in a hurry. The other waitress' that we've had stand and take their time, and small talk. We're not asking for small talk, just acknowledge that we are YOUR customers. **We also saw a worker drop a stack of to-go boxes on the floor. A few of them fell off the stack & 2 workers picked them up and re-stacked them after the bottoms touched the dirty kitchen floor.

Great food, reasonable price, good service

By Rev. Sylvia |

I’m particularly happy to bring out of town visitors to this eatery because it has a Texas style diner vibe. The menu reflects the variety of cuisine that is popular in San Antonio and does a great job of cooking it! From the fried catfish to the yummy Tex-Mex food, they manage to keep the flavors authentic.

A nice Chicken Fried Steak!

By Jcsflyboy |

Very little breading on the CFS and topped with their homemade gravy....Yum. Great mashed potatoes, taste fresh and not out of a box. They've been rated best burger in town....I will make that decision next time!

Good old fashion Chicken Fried Steak

By chefjeff60 |

Stopped in here for dinner with a friend. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans and country gravy just like my momma used to make.. They said this was the best in Texas I have had better but I would rate the gravy as some of the best I have ever had.

Local Gem

By Terik |

Food was fantastic service good. Loved the atmosphere, nothing fancy. Great relaxing place. Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, corn and onion rings. Would have given a 5 but 2 issues. Peels in the mashed potatoes, good flavor, but hate it when they leave them in. Other issue the delicious onion rings, one size only and enough for 4. A smaller serving would be great.

A Local Lunch Spot

By bobemac |

This place has been around for a long time. It's located on Broadway near parks and the Zoo. They haven't paved the parking lot yet, and the side walks are all rundown. We got here early for lunch and the place started filling up. Our server was attentive and efficient. We ordered the onion rings because they looked good. Although they were huge, they tasted bland and fell apart. We tried the supposedly "best chicken fried steak in town", but it wasn't. There was too much gristle in the meat and the battered coating was too easily separated from the meat. There also wasn't much taste. The "fresh" green beans came from a can and the mashed potatoes were uneventful. The special of the day was cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. This order was covered with chili gravy and chopped onions. It tasted pretty good. If you are in the mood for average Texas roadhouse fare, this is your place.

Good!

By CLITTLERIVER |

We came by for lunch today, we were wanting something different. Two of us had burgers, they were excellent. The other person in our party had grilled chicken. The food coming out of the kitchen looked good, the man next to us had fried pork chops, they looked really great!

Good food and fast service

By I_Like_Cats_12 |

Went and place was packed. We were seated quick (two of us). Server was attentive and food came quick. There is only one refill on sodas. Parking was easy with large parking lot.

group gathering

By 7travelgirl2929 |

I made reservations for 16 people. When we arrived, the tables were ready. This restaurant is very old but it was clean and the food was very good. I had fried catfish and it was excellent. I noticed a previous review from another TripAdvisor concerning the chicken fried steak which they didn't like. Two of my friends ordered Chicken fried steak and they loved it. Everyone seemed to like the food that they ordered.

Pleasant Surprise

By Kathy R |

My Dad took me here since it is one of his favorite restaurants and I wanted to stay away from the chain restaurants. Ordered the chicken fried steak and is was delicious. Portions are huge and the service was great...very personable and friendly. The decor lends to the neighborhood feel. Reasonable prices...about $30 for 2 entrees and drinks. Definitely glad my Dad shared this place with me.

CFS

By torino7788564 |

Been here several times and it have never been disappointed. Not a fancy place but the food is fantastic, the CFS is excellent with a thin coating and the gravy was very tasty. As always the service was on top of it.

Fun place

By texasjudye |

We had lunch at good time Charlie’s and as always it’s good. The appetizer mushrooms and onion rings are really good and big portions. Some had hamburgers and some nachos and all good. Service was very efficient. This is a place we usually go when in San Antonio and it’s always fun.

Texas comfort food

By Jim H |

I was in serious need of a Chicken Fried Steak and was told to go to GT Charlie's. It was lunchtime and the parking lot was full. We expected to have to wait, but there were several tables for two available. It was REALLY busy. But the activity was obviously focused on a purpose...satisfying hungry customers. Moments after sitting at the table, our server took our drink orders and was off to "get 'er done". No hanging around to chat...she was off to get our drinks and, no doubt, five other things. Upon her quick return, I ordered the chicken fried steak platter which comes with real mashed potatoes, green beans. The few minutes between the order and the delivery gave us a few minutes to appreciate the atmosphere...plenty of the kinds of people that make this economy and the USA the country run. Neon beer signs, lots of activity, lots of conversation, and cheerful dispositions. The green beans were not a mushy blob of pulp...they were good!. The mashed potatoes were unadulterated. The chicken fried steak was a good piece of meat...no gristle or chewy chunks...The meat was not hiding in a little cave in the midst of a huge blob of batter...it ran the full diameter of the batter and was cooked to perfection. The cream gravy was perfect....not the wallpaper paste you get at some national chains. It was just right. The amount was enough to feed someone hungry, but not so much as to be wasteful to someone less than dedicated to proper consumption of a chicken fried steak. My better half ordered the steak queso. The meat was cooked as ordered and the queso was yummy. The only recommendation would be to substitute green beans or broccoli instead of the mound of french fries that are the normal side dish. But, if you are into carbs, go ahead and get the fries, they're good. Our server brought the bill before we were finished eating...because she figured we were not going to be ordering dessert. She was right...we were packed. We left her a 20% tip and headed for the door. The table was cleared, cleaned, and ready for the next customer by the time we were out the door. It's a well oiled machine and a great example of how it should be done. Enjoy! T

hamburger steak is always great

The Hamburger steaks are great here. This place has a very comfortable down home diner experience. Also I have been here several times and the service has always been good and friendly.

Great food. One complaint.

I've been here several times. Great food and good size portions. Onion rings are huge. Chicken Fried Steak is one of the best in the city...my mom wanted to try it, BUT...they fry it in the same grease as the fish. ..and mom is very allergic to seafood. So it would be nice if they could cook things separately.

Best Chicken Fried Steak? Not in my book!

By Rita Kay D |

Having read that GTC had the best chicken fried steak, we decided to drop by and give it a try. I don't often eat chicken fried steak, but this was definitely no the best I have eaten. In fact it may have been the worst...lots of gristle, fried covering could have used a little seasoning. Mashed potatoes were decent with bits of peel present, but green beans were tasteless. The one redeeming quality was the side of onion rings. They were not only good but the serving size was huge. Plenty for four of us to share.

Good time at Charlie's

Good service. The chicken fried steak was good. I didn't love the white gravy as it was a bit sweet, but my mom really loved it. She had wanted to go try their food for a long time. She was happy to finally eat there. Their hamburger and fries are ok also. They brew their tea fresh. It was really good. The service was good also. We could have shared one plate of Chicken Fried Steak between two people. I liked the corn and mashed potatoes that came with the meal also. My sister got the green beans. For people who don't know, Chicken Fried Steak is made with beef. There is no chicken in it. It is just the name of the plate. That's how we do it here in Texas :)

Unorganized/rushed employees

I went here with a large group for my mother's birthday. We had reservations so the wait wasn't long. However they were one table short so we were very crowded at first. When I sat down the waitress ask what id like to drink. me-what do u have? Waitress - it's on the menu Me-( looking for the beverage listing) Waitress-(walks off) RUDE As she later gets the rest of the drink orders she ignores me(I'm standing right in front of her) I never get my sweet tea until the 3rd time around. The tea is not even sweet btw. She takes the orders.onve everyone gets their food my Grandmas chicken fried steak is raw. she takes it back. It comes back and it's even more raw She takes it back.my Grandma asks for a cheeseburger this time. It comes back with no cheese ...IT'S A CHEESEBURGER! To top it off the food tasted terrible. Nothing was good except the fried mushrooms. I NEVER Complain about a place unless I feel the need to really tell everyone else thay they're waisting their money. It took 20 just to figure out the check. You see, that waitress (old lady short blonde hair, glasses, called people sweetie or hunny) she told my Grandma that her food was free since they messed up the order so much. Turns out she charged her for every plate. So that took some time to fix. The worst thing about this place was that the bartender in the back wasn't even cleaning the dishes. She was just wetting them with hot water. The rest of the night/next morning I had the worst stomach ach.

Good as Always

One of my favorite San Antonio restaurants. I always get the Chicken Fried Steak but was not quite hungry enough, so I had a cheeseburger. It was delicious! Service was good as usual. Just one of the better places to eat. No frills just good food.

Best onion rings EVER

When I am in San Antonio, I always have a meal at Good Time Charlie's. It is a little funky to get to, but the food is worth it, Great, messy hamburgers and absolutely the best onion rings ever!

Yuck

I've had a few burgers in my time...visited a few restaurants as well. I've seen this place driving up and down Broadway and thought I would pop in for a beer and a burger. Sent the Patty Melt back cause it was gross. Bread was old, meat "gritty". Brought me regular cheeseburger. Let me say that even McD's would be better! Onion rings could not be substituted...really? Beer was cold. Service very friendly. Kinda dirty floors. Trust me, if not for the icy cold beer and service...go to Whattaburger!

Bad Time and Not a Good Time at Charlie's!

By Vortexas8 |

My girlfriend & I went back after 2 year's since we met...Bathroom changes(Great)food & prices Bad!! Honestly the quality of the food portions were poor! After ordering our Drinks I noticed that the Mugs are smaller and prices sky rocketed to almost $6 for the Frozen Margarita because it was strong it made up the difference. After we finished eating our waitress took over 15 minutes for Her to come pick up our bill so we could leave... and the place was not even busy. What Happened to the Old Good Time's Charlie's? We will not be back sooner than 2 year's... May be Longer Than That!

OK

I tried the chicken fried steak and it was just ok. Have had better at Cracker Barrel. Service was fast.

Disappointment

By PurplePaloma |

Don't go here if you are looking for anything remotely healthy. I ordered the chicken tenders with cilantro, and two vegetables. The vegetables were canned, the chicken tasted blah, and the Texas toast was limp. My friend had steak, mashed potatoes and the canned corn. He said the mashed potatoes were the best part of the meal. We saw some good looking hamburgers go by. If you go there, order the burger and fries.

Good time, yes; good food, almost

For once in our lives someone else picked the restaurant to eat at, and we ended up at Good Time Charlie's. I think it was my parents, who'd heard that the chicken fried steak was the best anywhere. There were 8 in our party and my husband and I got there first, so we waited at the bar for about 45 minutes until our table was ready. It was a weekend and it was crowded, and the place itself is not that big. While at the bar we had an iced tea (not great) and some Shiner Bock, which tapped out pretty soon after arriving so we didn't get much of that. We had some "nachos" from the appetizer menu, which were really tostadas (fried corn tortillas topped with refried beans and shredded cheese). I wasn't too thrilled with the menu as it was mostly hamburgers and fried things, although I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised based on who picked the restaurant! I ordered the chicken fingers and my sister ordered the steak fingers. Neither of us really liked our food so we ended up switching, and I ate her steak fingers. They were better than the chicken fingers by a long shot, but still nothing really special. The plate came with mashed potatoes, green beans, toast, and gravy. I think most of my family enjoyed this restaurant and their meals, but if you're looking for something even close to healthy then this is not the place.

Good food poor service

The food was really good,The price was right, the atmosphere was inviting, and the staff was super friendly. The problem was the extreme delay in getting anything to eat or drink. The waitress had a huge table of more than twenty people so I cam sympathize but it would have been a plus to have gotten my food in a timely manner

Great Chicken Fingers

The chicken fingers are the best I've ever had! They come with mashed potatoes, green beans, TX toast, and gravy--all excellent.

Best CFS in San Antonio

Native son, I've tried them all, this is the best examp[le of a good Chicken Fried Steak as you will ever find. I'm not talkin' bout no breaded rib-eye or fried hamburger, just real, honest average ole Chicken Fried Steak. Cube steak , twice breaded with honest sausage cream gravy, not too much flour breading and NO CHICKEN GRAVY. Less than $10 with 2 sides in a cute little parkside bistro. Located at Mulberry and Broadway, just off the SE corner of Brackenridge Park, cata-corner from the Kiddie Park. Plenty of other things both fried and not, on the menu. Salads and specials and a great hot dog too. Ice cold beverages , cool shade and eclectic decor with usual TV's can break up your day while moving from midtown to downtown. Late hours, open for lunch at 11am.

Unexpected Lunch

Well I seen the commercials many times over. I had the chicken fried steak too much batter and floury taste....it was not that great, however, the veggies were great fresh. The other plates were fair.
