We were in Philly for a concert, and my son remembered a guy he worked with told him that this place was THE place for a Philly Cheesesteak. He was right, this sangwich would make any die-hard fan glad they found this off the beaten path gem. A genuine, one of a kind experience awaits those who trek to this sandwich shop. The staff was awesome, the food was delicious, and it was worth the trip. I am already looking forward to our next trip to Philadelphia, and I will be going to Gooey Looies.

These cheesesteaks are gigantic but for some reason they put a little amount of cheese on the bottom and don't mix it in. That's a no-no as far as I am concerned.

The one thing we really wanted to find was an authentic cheesesteak the locals would eat. Not a chain, not a touristy place. I bet you feel the same way. This. This is your spot! Our family of four shared two large cheesesteaks, and it was plenty! We also enjoyed the "water ice", which I found out is another local treat. The place is tucked away in a residential area, and don't follow the GPS down the back alley...look for a small parking lot right BEFORE the alley. Make the trip, you won't regret it!!

Well, Gooey Looies have been around for quite some time and I've been frequenting for a while now when I first came here the corn beef special was the best (and still is) a hoagie was about $5.75 and now a hoagie is $9.75. Crazy!!! They do give you a lot of meat and it's very fresh but there has been a decline in the size of the hoagie ( much smaller now) and the price has gone up tremendously ($4.00) ridiculous! When you're a local you can find other places in your area that are just as good. So Gooey Looies need to step their game up and lower their prices at least $2.00 a sandwich and maybe some of us originals will come back. Now I don't feel like it's worth the trip!

My family and I went to this place for dinner. We ordered 3 steaks and 3 hoagies. We told them peppers on the side. You must stand outside until your order is done. When done they call you inside to pay and pick-up. Well first of all sides were on hoagies. Then we asked why was there $1.50 added to each sandwich price? We were told it was a covid charge. Never have I heard of such thievery. When we opened the sandwiches they were soggy and horrible cheap steak meat. Never eat there. Almost $70 down the drain. Garbage! I would give them zero stars.

Hard to find but worth the effort. These sandwiches are HUGE and soooo good! An average person can eat a small one and will be filled! You have to park and walk to the store. No real seating in the place so find yourself a seat somewhere nearby and chow down.

Yes their cheesesteaks are large. However, the meat is bland and the overall steak doesn't have that much flavor. The rolls get way too soogy. This place isn't a secret, so don't think you found the spot where all the locals get their cheesesteak. Fifteen years ago, maybe it was that place. However, a few years ago this establishment was featured on one of the food network TV shows specifically for their cheesesteaks. Ever since then, the cheesesteaks haven't been the same. If I come here at all anymore I get a hoagie. Their hoagies are still pretty good. Overall, this place is average. They do put a lot of meat in their cheesesteaks, but there's ltitle flavor. I don't recommend going out of your way to come here if a Philly cheesesteak is what you want. If you do come here, get a hoagie instead.

This was real steak. This wasn't some processed meat that people call steak. It was meaty, cheesy and even better the next day warmed in the oven. I can't wait to go back to have another one the next time I'm in Philly.

This was my first time at this cash only mom and pop place. They have great hoagies and cheese steaks. Large portions make it worth the price. I will be going back to this nice find. Two people can get one sandwich.

This used to be my go to place when traveling to South Philly for a hoagie. Place still looks the same.Service is good and friendly.Still give a large amount of meat but sandwich was almost tasteless.Italian hoagie tasted very bland & no provolone.Chunks of onion was weird.I sure hope this was an off day or I'll be really depressed!

First off,I'm a Colorado guy and can't really speak to the comparative quality of the cheesesteak I ordered. I can just say it was delicious, one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. My wife ordered a turkey sandwich that was fantastic as well. The real greatness of Gooey Looies was in the service. They recognized that we were out-of-towners and offered my kids water ice. Never had it before, but it was so good we ordered some for everyone. They also gave us a pretzel which, apparently is delicious with water ice. The sandwiches, drinks, water ice, and freebies all totalled around $20. What a deal. The one downside was finding the place. My directions but the location on McClellan st. Do not turn on this street, which is just an alley next to the building where the restaurant is. Overall, next time in Philly, I will seek out this joint.

My Fiance' and I found ourselves visiting Gooey LOUIES again, the food here is very good and the guy with the glasses that works in the back is very humorous as well. Their corned beef hoagie is to die for. It's always so crowded here to be so small but you can rest assure that you are getting an authentic Italian hoagie with great fresh meats and good pickles bit on some real, seems the price goes up everytime I go! Nine+ for a hoagie, OMG!

We had an hour to kill after arriving at the airport in Philly. Did a random internet search for a cheesesteak place near the airport. Took a chance on Looies and glad we did. Seriously, take a chance on a small local joint- you can thank me later. Classic Philly steaks in a neighborhood that looks like classic Philly (the non-tourist version). CASH ONLY. Only three small tables, and the place is tiny, itself so you will need to eat at the tables outside or take it to go. The small steak sandwiches were the size of larges everywhere else. The large steak sandwiches are seriously gigantic- way too much food for one person. This place has serious character. Sells local/regional brands of snack foods as well. Can also get hoagies, but the steaks are the best!!!

The atmosphere wasn't great but the food was tremendous. One of the best (if not the best) cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. Come here for the food and leave to eat somewhere else, not the greatest place for families to eat.

Forget what you know watched or heard about philly cheese steaks. Go to gooey's first. To find them is to go inside a compound on the corner of 2nd and moore. Look for the "mall" then its on your left near the middle of compound. If you're lucky you can see movie stars or Catch babe hefron in the mornings. (Band of brothers) hes there daily. See the pics.

I am from South Philly, visiting Gooey Looies for many, many, many years. I am proud to say Gooey is still authentic and not commercialized; same great service, still the same huge sizes, not sacrificing taste, and the staff is very humorous. I am retired having moved away from the area x 3 times. When I am in Philly which is usually twice a year< I take a minimum of no less than 7 back every time. Gooey Looies for Life!!!

If only tourists could make their way here and avoid the Vegas strip on passyunk. A neighborhood place tucked away but worth the search. Just chips sodas steaks and hoagies. And their cheesesteak is the real deal - a top 10 in Philly easy - huge, cheesy, all blends together - perfect! Please try it!

Born and raise in the South Philly neighborhood of Pennsport/ 2nd street....down where the Mummers clubs are located, we have hidden our favorite foodie place. This is the real deal in Philly cheesesteaks and hoagies. ANYONE who doesn't like their sandwiches must be a cra-ZY! It simply doesn't get any better than this for sheer mass and yumminess. So good, ya wanna cry! Owners of the place are great 'philly guys'....If your an out a towner, ask em about dem Eagles and you are sure to strike up a conversation. Tip for finding the place, best to look for 2nd and Moore or Moyamensing and Moore Sts. on google maps

The hoagie was delicious! Filled with fresh, lovely layers of ham, this sandwich can't be beat for the value! The service was friendly as well. Bring cash and ENJOY!

tiny little store, can't eat there but oh those sandwiches. you can hardly hold them. very clean and friendly. I had a salami hoagie, my husband had roast beef. we couldn't wait to get home so we ate in the car. i also got a pickle from the barrel, love them.

I had the cheese steak and my companion had the turkey hoagie. The sandwiches are HUGE, and they taste great. The only issue is that the place is difficult to find and there was a little bit of a wait for the food.

First real Phili cheese steak sandwich, we were impressed. One was enough for two people excellent flavor. People very helpful to a bunch of tourists.

If you are looking for a sandwich that is overflowing with meat this is the place to go. They put an unbelievable larges amount of meat on ALL their sandwiches. Their steak sandwiches are EXCELLENT. The meat is tender and very flavorful. Their hoagies are the same way, They are packed with soooooo much meat that you can make several sandwiches from the one. If you are not familiar with the location it may be hard to find since it is located in a courtyard. Well worth the trip.

Was a little bit of a mission to find because if you go down the wrong street its all very narrow one ways, so make sure you watch the names of the streets carefully. Its a small little hole in the wall sandwhich shop that doesn't look like much from the outside. Nor from the inside. Its at the back of a mini market and has maybe a small dingy table and a few chairs. But MAN!! The cheese steak sandwich was worth every wrong turn my husband took. We each ordered a small and they were huge and packed with so much deliciousness! We ate outside at a table. From what the locals say, this place is a legit local favorite for Philly Cheese steaks. You will not be disappointed!

They offer a wide variety of sandwiches that are cheap and delicious. Their cheesesteaks are packed and cheaper than the more famous steak places. Our personal favorite is the cornbeef special. So big you can't get your mouth around it. Check out their website to see the menu and prices.

We stopped in after a morning driving in from out of state. We had heard that the locals like Gooey Looies and decided to give it a try. We also knew that some had a difficult time finding it. We, too, had a little difficulty, but if you look at the "mall" sign just beyond the street where they are addressed, you'll see Gooey Looies listed right at the top. Parking was adequate for a late Saturday morning with no charge for customers staying less than 2 hours. There were a few small tables inside, but we found it enjoyable to sit outside int her common area of the "mall". The food was great although I might have preferred just a little more cheese. There is quite a large selection of ingredients you can request on your cheesesteak, but we went for the standard meat and cheese on one and meat, cheese, and onions on the other. The workers at Gooey Looies were very friendly toward us and their obviously regular customers as well. Be prepared to pay with cash as they don't accept any credit cards. The prices are very reasonable, so a sandwich from Gooey Looies won't break your wallet.

Great take out spot in South Philly. If You like fresh, overstuffed sandwichs this place is a must. The chicken salad is awesome.

This place has huge cheesesteaks at great prices. Way more meat than the touristy Pat's and Geno's (who doesn't even chop his). And they use provolone, not that chemical mess called Cheese Wiz. The entire staff is super friendly too! Set in a tiny shopping center in the middle of residential row houses. The meat is chopped and the bread is soft. The best!

Second time riding our bikes from New York. Nice Laid back area. easy parking. Great Cheesesteak. Bought two home for me this time. Like the the other reviewer stated when you re- heat it's still Good!! will be back soon. other known spots lines too long ,no parking, sandwich average. outside Tables(2) (Deli)

Prepare your treasure maps for this stop, we had a heck of a time finding it. Much like a treasure hunt though, when you find it...you'll feel far richer than you did before! I went with Cooper Sharp/wit', my son got a cooper sharp/without, and my other son and daughter got cheeseburgers. Gooey Looie's is tucked inside of a little area that looks like a mix of apartments and commercial rental units, but from nearly all sides except the parking lot it looks like a bunch of nothing. When we finally found this one we were very happy and excited to check it out. This is not your typical tourist trap location with a ton of lights and lines down the block. There were a few guys playing touchscreen gambling games and a few employees and that was that. It was...wonderful. When taking this steak in my hands it was like someone gave me a dumbbell. Very heavy steak sandwich and you could smell it through the bag. This was a more finely chopped steak than some in the area, depending on what you like that's either a good or bad thing. For me personally, I like both styles so I was happy one way or another. There was a ton of cheese on this steak to match the ton of meat. The bread was very solid, not ripping or falling apart at all. The onions were a small dice (which I love) and were cooked perfectly. All in all this was a really solid sandwich. I can't speak about the burgers but both my son and daughter said they enjoyed them. In the ballpark of $30 for two steaks and two burgers, great price in my opinion. This goes without saying...Gooey Looie's in Philly - Didn't Suck!
Cheese steak was soggy with way too much meat
From the reviews here, we thought the cheese steaks at Gooey Looies would be amazing, but it was mediocre at best. The bread was soggy and there was way too much meat. The sandwich fell apart as we were trying to eat it, and it didn't taste like anything special. We wouldn't come back.
