DISAPPOIMTED

By mollypie |

We made a special trip for their famous rueben sandwiches but unfortunately they were missing the "wow" factor. The sandwich bread was smaller than usual and the meat was not piles high like before. We wont need to go back.

Reubens are great, as everyone knows. Love the patio as we had our giant dog. Staff are so sweet. What a nice experience!

By kari r |

The gentleman that served us and the chefs were so accommodating. I asked for a special order and it was done with a smile.

Best rueben, dog friendly

By AtoZTravelJunkie |

The outdoor patio is great for dogs. We snagged the big table way in the back and my little pup slept the entire time on the spacious bench. The wait staff was very pleasant and efficient. The food was awesome. Three in our party ordered the reuben and it was "the best on the planet" as they advertise. We happened to be there when the reuben master was working so that was a bonus. The potato salad was also surprisingly good. The soup of the day was definitely homemade and hit the spot. Side salad was fresh with side of I'm sure homemade bleu cheese. Check it out!

What a delicious lunch experience!

Going to this restaurant was part of day's adventure, and really capped it off well. We had a large group and the restaurant was so very accommodating to us, even when our planned arrival (we had made reservations) was greatly delayed. The service was A plus plus in that respect. We couldn't say enough thanks for that. Everyone enjoyed the food, and there was a variety of menu ordered. The Reuben? If you have liked them, this will be the best one you ever tasted. So good! This was my first time to the place, and I am afraid I will get a hankering for another Reuben and have to go back again. And right off the Max line. Really good place to go. Good food, good drinks (they serve an Arnold Palmer and have good iced tea) and great people serving you.

Awesome old school pub

By MLM |

Goose Hollow has been around for a long time. The decor is a little tired but overall the pub is clean. There is a big patio that can be partially be used even when it rains. Well trafficked by regulars but they always make room for new comers. The food is decent. Locally, they are famous for their Reuben sandwiches. Beer selection is good and includes plenty of choices from NW brewers. Staff has always been pleasant and we have always received good service but don't go here if you are in a hurry.

YUM!!! Still the Best Rueben!!!

By Milli D |

The Rueben sandwich with wonderful potato salad and a crisp dill pickle is at the top of my favorites at "The Goose". On Tuesday they serve seafood salads (Crab, shrimp or a combo) that are stupendous! Cost is in line with what you would pay anywhere else for similar fare, but quality is better here. YUM!!

Good place to be

By Mani M |

Everything is perfect. The quality of food is good, coffee is great, environment is fantastic and people are so nice and friendly

Great Ruben!

By Lynne S |

Goose Hollow Inn is a great place for lunch or dinner. I think you could call it "pub food". There are lots of sandwich combinations to choose from and of course, lots of beer. It's a very casual place and was very comfortable. My husband said that it was the best Ruben he's ever had. The service was very good and the prices are very reasonable. We would definitely eat there again.

Excellent for what it is

By SkykomishBob |

We emailed a friend and asked where we could meet for lunch on our way through Portland, and he recommended Goose Hollow for sandwich and a beer outdoors. I eat a lot of Ruebens, and I'm not ready to say this one was the best on the Planet (there isn't one that is that good), as the menu states, but it was wonderful, and the beer price for PBR was the best anywhere. Everyone else expressed enthusiastic satisfaction with their choices as well. We never got beyond the deck, so I can't comment on the interior decor or anything like that, but for what we wanted on an early summer Saturday afternoon, this place was great.

Very Tasty Rueben

By whynot4382 |

My wife and I split a reuben which was very tasty and is one the best in town. Service was a bit abbreviated and we seemed to be invisible sometimes with the lack of attention. We would go back but we hope we receive better service

Annual Birthday Lunch

By Scott M |

My wife and I take my brother and his wife here every year for his birthday. We love their Classic Reuben sandwiches. Their Turkey Reuben and Turkey Dip sandwiches are good too.

Fun place to go

By Nancy F |

You just have to visit this place at least once. There is some fun history associated with it. The food is good (not great) the prices are ok. You will like it.

Iconic Tavern

By Margaret M |

Fun place to eat, friendly helpful service, great Reuben sandwich located right off a Max stop so you don't have to drive, although they do have a small parking lot.

Cozy Tavern

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

Cozy establishment just south of Providence Park. Stopped here after a Timbers match. Not a big place so had some difficulty getting a table for our group of 8. Probably more enjoyable when not so crowded. Service was friendly and the food was tasty. I enjoyed my Reuben sandwich which they are known for.

A bit of old portland

By Ann BK |

Spouse & I have wanted to eat here for a very long time, but never got off MAX to do so. We finally made it today & are glad we did. Neither of us cares for Reuben sandwiches, their famous specialty, so shared a whole Goose Hollow Pizza. Our server told us it was burned, thanked us for our patience, & returned with another. The crust was still a bit crispy, but maybe that's the way they make them. All in all, it was yummy. I like the idea of 10 oz glasses of beer; I tried two--Ecliptic Brewing's porter and Walking Man Brewing's cherry stout. We ate indoors, but the wrap around porch looked inviting. This place is a 50 year old landmark that must be doing a lot right to keep attracting regulars & new patrons. It's almost like stepping back in time to another era & that's a good thing. We'll go back.

Best Rueben, great bar

By ScoopJWM |

I don't like sauerkraut at all. However, you can't taste it on this Rueben. Awesome atmosphere, excellent food (though I've had nothing except the Rueben all 6 times). Love this place! Well worth the money.

Outstanding Ruebens

By Marlynne P |

This is a very old pub & eating establishment. Their outdoor dining is nice in the summer. I think they have one of the best Ruebens around.

First place back in the usa

By abcblondie |

My boyfriend and I spent a year abroad in Europe and the goose hollow inn was the first place we stopped at back in the states. It really hit the spot! Great beers, tasty Reuben and corned beef sandwiches. The service was friendly too.

Good tasting sandwich

By WStaso |

There is, indeed a lot of noise on the front patio, with trams, cars, etc on the road and the people talking loudly to be heard. But there is nice shade and a lively atmosphere. The roast beef sandwich with melted swiss cheese was delicious dipped. I tried their horse radish. It was very hot. They serve a generous portion of chips and melted cheese and their potato salad was, in my opinion, better than most. Service was good, all in all a good experience.

Awesome beer, awesome food. Cool, down to earth people. Our favorite local hangout so far.

Great Lunch and Service!

By bac26 |

I stopped here for lunch and am glad I did. There is plenty of outside seating. I had a Bloody Mary with beer chaser (Boneyard Blood Orange Pale Ale). The spinach salad was tasty and large. The cheese bread was served hot and tasted great with the pizza sauce dip. My young male server was working his butt off since he was the only server outside and customers were coming and going. He was friendly and did not miss a beat with service and follow-up! The restaurant is located across the street from the rail system. Masks were required to enter the building. The bathroom was very clean. Thank-you for a tasty lunch!

They really do have the best Reuben's on the planet!

By KristieSP |

The Goose Hollow Inn is a Portland institution. It's a wonderfully funky, fun, neighborhood bar where the regulars are greeted by name, and new comers are made to feel as welcome as the regulars. They have a number of microbrews on tap and a nice variety of wine. The MAX line stops directly in front of the establishment which makes it easily accessible and eliminates parking hassles.

Goose Hollow Inn

By CherylDave1967 |

This place was fun, and a good dining experience. The ruben we all ordered was different (ingredients) but it was very good and a good sized sandwich. We would go back w/o any hesitation.

You see everything here!

By Tina C |

A local legend, old, small interior, covered porch, the most amazing assortment of attire on everyone from little kids to oldies like us! Rightly famous for corned beef sandwiches, huge, wonderful, half was all I could eat. I understand the owner, a former mayor, is now deceased, but check out the funny, suggestive photo of him as a raincoat-wearing model for a 1978[20] poster titled "Expose Yourself to Art"

OMG

Quaint neighbourhood historic family restaurant not far from the waterfront SW Portland region. Excellent in all way, decor, service, drinks, food and price!!

Great spot for lunch

By John76051 |

We were visiting Portland and were looking for a place for lunch after our visit to the arboretum. We found this cozy little place and enjoyed their Seafood Louis combo special along wit a nice porter for myself a a glass of Malbec for my wife. The salad was awesome. Definitely recommend visiting this pub when you’re nearby.

Just barely OK

By weatfood |

Was disappointed. Older lady waitress was very distracted and food was just ok. We sat by back door, in a room that was an after thought.

Girls Weekend

By jklscott |

When I asked a new coworker where to eat when in Portland, she didn't even hesitate or refer anywhere else. Traveling to the Oregon Coast from Seattle, this was the perfect lunch spot. We all had the suggested Reuben and seriously contemplated stopping on the return drive back. I will be back again for sure and they will too when they make the trip from Denver again!

Destination Reuben

By DewPortland |

This is where we choose to go when we crave a Reuben. They have both corned beef and turkey. There is a good selection of tap beers and their wine selection by the glass has improved with both Oregon and imported wines. Service is quick and friendly. Smooth jazz is playing while we waited for our sandwiches which are stuffed and tasty.

Great Neighbourhood Bar

By wayflos |

The best neighborhood bar ever! I always order the same...Guinness, a Reuben with potato salad, and carrot sticks. If you want a great slice of Portland...come here and visit with college students, philosophers, and old poets. If you're lucky you may even see the mayor who made Portland famous for exposing himself...Bud Clarke, the owner!

Top 5 Reuben on the Planet

By Cindy F |

I have had a huge number of Reubens all in the search for the best of the best. After having GH Reuben, I've decided that the search has ended but cannot give it the #1 rating...it's among the very best - top five on my planet. As for GH itself, I rate it 3 for the crappy parking, in such a busy neighborhood. I guess it comes with the territory. Our server was friendly and attentive, decor is old/comfy. Host is unininspring. Many other places to try...moving along.

What Happened?

By whynot4382 |

Have been regular Reuben fan and continually bragged to friends that this was the place! Well, I finally was able to introduce some friends to a Goose Hollow Reuben but wow what a first time disappointment. It was only a few months ago that I had a typical tasty Reuben but this last visit I believe they forgot to put but a morsel of meat on the sandwichs. I hope they haven't changed their Reuben formula and it was just a mistake. I been going to this place for decades and will give them another chance. Hopefully the management reads this review and corrects this issue.

Fun place

By Susan W |

We came for a reuben and beer before the timbers game. It is vibrant and full of character. The beer selection was impressive (first red ale I had seen this trip)...so we returned after the timbers victory to celebrate! This is a family owned and run enterprise and I am told by someone who worked here that they treat their workers well.

A Portland Tradition That Hopefully Never Leaves

By lindalindabm |

I started going to Goose Hollow back in about 1992. Then I stayed away, for no reason at all until about 2008 - instead of all those years in between, it could be only a day or two. I'd swear the same people worked there, and ate there! The menu is short, the wine is limited, but it's enough, if not more, if you're comfortable on a morning at 11 when they open, and you're welcomed it - the food is consistently good, and the ambiance is all you can wish for. In the evening, people are playing Trivial Pursuit on the outside, warmed, porch - college kids, senior kids, having a beer or a new comer that says "why didn't anyone ever tell me about this before? I've taken friends that I've known for 40 years, that have lived in Portland over those 40 years, who say I've heard about it, but never knew how to find it. Now it's their go-to place for Ruebens (of every type), Liver sausage sandwiches (try and find that somewhere else), a beer or pizza. When the Timbers or Thorns are playing, you may not be able to get in before the game, but maybe you can share a table with someone that in time may become a "best friend". Goose Hollow is one of those places you hope never disappear from Portland, or the earth....it's the best of what we, and people like the Bud Clark Family can provide to make us happy.

Pleasant place to rest and eat after touring

By KTT |

Mom, pop and son shop that says they serve the world's best ruben. I watched them make many and it looked like a fine meal for a lumberjack. I'll be back when I'm starving. I enjoyed sitting at the bar with a cool beverage and chatting with the family after a tour of Washington Park

Casual dining

By DEMEHR |

Nice deck to eat outside on a nice day. Food was good and decent portions. Reasonable prices. Very casual setting. Would go back again if in the area.

The Place I Crave

By Tanya M |

I go here when I have the time to enjoy the atmosphere. Love the Rachel's Ruben-it was what I craved when I was expecting our second child. It also helps me avoid fries since they don't have a deep frier.

Great value for excellent food

By fredSeattle_Wa |

Three of us had an after action business lunch. Old favorite of my partner but it kind of slid off his list of favorites. Our excellent lunch has restored it. Our guest and I had the Rueben - if we each wanted to hoard it for future indulgence we could easily have split one. Partner, a more restrained eater went with corned beef and Swiss cheese. Everything was great, sides included a very nice dill pickle, a good pickle on a restaurant setting isn’t all that common. Had the local cider from Baumanns- also a fine choice. Not sure about kids, probably a good idea to check. It’s a very down-home spot. Lots of interesting stuff on the menu. We will be back.

All-Time Favorite

By Anthony J |

This bar is my dream retirement. Every time I visit Portland I dedicate an afternoon to bellying up to the bar for a pint. Someday I will move to the neighborhood and grow old talking shop with passerby’s while the rain falls outside.

Learned a lesson.

By Inlovemexi |

It was actually my second visit to this place. I did not have a good experience at the first time, but I tried it again because we were just in the vicinity and there was not any other place close by. The experience was terrible. The wait was too long. After sitting, it took about 10 minutes for a server to come by. Yes, the place was busy, but knowing we were there, no excuse in my standard. The order came so late. We waited for 45 minutes by the time some of the food arrived. Surprisingly, my order was only a cup of soup! After 45 minutes, it did not show. I don't believe they would make it from scratch. Some of us did not have enough time to wait for the food, so we left. When we were leaving, the server was upset at us saying how few servers they have and they have only one cook. Is that our problem? I think they'd better talk to the management. If you have whole afternoon to wait, go for it. But their food is nothing special and the beers are also what you can get at any other breweries or stores. There seems to be local regular customers and they seemed to be treated much better. My friends and I will never go back.

Very delicious and enjoyable lunch!!

By Natalie W |

We believed the info in the menu, advertising the Bloody Mary Quite Contrary and the different reubens - and the Goose Hollow Inn did NOT disappoint! Everything from the food to great service was extremely satisfying - I highly recommend this restaurant!! My husband had the roast beef and said it was the best he’s had! Words from our friends included delightful! Delicious! And great value!

The intellectual crowd hang here.

By Dave M |

You will find several PSU professors frequent this place. Happy hour can be standing room only. It's owned by a former Portland mayor, namely Bud Clark. They serve great food, especially their Reuben. Come early to get good parking. This was one of my favorite hangouts when I was going to college.

Food ok, service terrible

By sier |

The food was ok, just standard pub food. They don't have french fries at all which was kind of strange, so the sandwiches come with potato salad instead. The service was severely lacking. After we sat ourselves at a table it took a good 10 minutes for anyone to approach us. We only saw our server once the entire time just when she took our drink order. I never did get the water I requested. The cook brought our food to us. No one ever came back to check on us to see if we needed anything else. I would have liked to order another drink, but no one ever came back. They never brought our bill either, so finally we went up to the bar & paid so we could leave.

Hot turkey sandwich excellent

By 1963chevy |

A little dark and dingy for me especially the washrooms. Sit outside. The beef dip was poor but the hot turkey excellent.

The absolute most delicious Marianberry Cocktail!!!!!

By CherylRDH |

The Goose Hollow Inn offered outdoor seating in a relaxed atmosphere. The marianberry cocktail was out of this world!

The smell of the place was like putting on a bathrobe after a hot shower in winter

By Andrew L |

The quaint dark room looked out onto a drizzle stained deck. The cool autumn air had moved in with its cloud pals. We settled into a cozy booth and ordered. Crab melt and halibut sandwich. Both great. A cup of turkey dumpling soup to start. All the flavors intact with a homemade personality. Not the odor of a Sysco can anywhere smellable, a great compliment in these industrialized times. The lovely waitress shared stories of travel as the clouds cooled the planet by disallowing sunlight. We talked of Thailand as the spicy Bloody Mary arrived with extra pickled peppers. The salt washed buns like soft pretzels hugged the food. The time passed pleasantly as our hunger was neutralized in the best way possible: with satisfying tasty hand-made victuals. Many good looking menu selections and happy hour choices. I will come back.

Local color

By augustleroy |

A nice neighborhood restaurant/bar that serves up the best potato salad in the world. If you are looking for a blue jeans atmosphere, an outside deck, very friendly servers, a good menu at a fair price this is the place. Parking is a tad difficult so allow yourself time to search. The ruben is not bad.

"The Goose" will be here long after we're all gone.

By BobsCupcake |

This is one of Portland's iconic hangouts and if you're lucky, you just might get a glimpse of the owner and past mayor, Bud Clark. My boyfriend and I agree, they make the best roast beef sandwiches around and I love their Turkey Reubens too. All sandwiches are served the exact same way (and have been for as long as anybody can remember), with potato salad and carrot sticks.....who does carrot sticks, but maybe your mom??? Yes, the service can be a tad slow at times, but, hey, it's a busy place! And, yes, it isn't exactly pristine - they could clean the place now and then - but maybe that's part of the charm. The cooking area is wide open for all to see, so you know the food is being handled properly. If you like a casual, funky even, atmosphere and honest food & drinks - you'll love this place....and it's right across the street from a MAX stop!

The Rueben

By sharzie12 |

What do you do to make this sandwich so GOOD?? Are they baked or grilled? Do you use swiss or cheddar or both? They are the best that I've ever eaten!

Yummy

By Cheryl B |

We got two Rueben, the shrimp toast and the quinoa beet salad. Food was yummy. Portions are a little small for price. Wish the side was more exciting than carrot sticks. Coronavirus tent outside is a nice set up. Convenient to light rail.

Food's decent but the service is dreadful.

Food's decent but the service is dreadful.

Great place to meet friends

By jcravens |

I live in Forest Grove. Most of my friends and colleagues are in Portland. I suggested Goose Hollow as a place to meet with fellow committee members, just because I'd seen it at the first Max stop inside of Portland coming from the West. We liked it so much that we're all having regular meetings there now. Good beer selection, very good bar food (even some healthy stuff), friendly staff. It's better when the weather allows for eating outside - it can get REALLY crowded inside otherwise.

Classic, good people-watching.

By varnermatt |

I go here for guys night at least a few times a year. Great beer and an eclectic crowd. I'll keep going back.

Great little pub where everyone will feel welcome

By JA R |

Solid beer line-up. Cozy tables. Dark wood and walls covered with stuff. Better than average food for a pub. Great place to hang on a typical drizzled Portland day. Outside deck is nice but the ambience of Max makes for less than stellar tones. Inside is better. Tough to find parking so consider that Max train or walking. In a town filled with good bars this one comes pretty close to a crusty, trusty neighborhood pub in the UK.

Famous Portland watering hole

By Candice C |

Have known about this place for decades but ate there for the first time. It was busy and noisy and festive, but the food was mediocre. Probably an entertaining place to hang out, but it was too busy to linger.

Cool little place

By TeriS372 |

Cool little place. Came here before a Timbers game. The atmosphere was perfect for us. I kept reading reviews about over crowded bars near the field that take 40 minutes to get a drink pregame. Here the service was attentive, friendly and atmosphere was interesting and quirky. Good beer menu to choose from, and there was a nice mix of neighborhood locals, regulars and fans. The food was decent bar food and not too expensive. I had a grilled cheese with lettuce and tomato and potato salad. The potato salad was quite good. The place has an interesting history and every nook and Cranny is covered with pictures and memorabilia from Portland's recent past.

Home away from Home...

By Trek7264 |

We stumbled across the Goose Hollow Inn one summer and it soon became our local .... there was much more stumbling from then on! The bar had a welcoming, relaxed attitude - you could wander in at any hour and find someone to chat to, have a beer/wine (they had a great selection of local beers and you can by wine by the caraffe, glass, bucket....) and wander out again at your leisure. The staff were friendly, leisurely, interesting folk who made us feel entirely welcome and gave us advice (or even transport!) to the local attractions - the Rose Garden, etc. Although I'm from Ireland, contrary to common opinion, we don't really eat cornbeef and so I can't agree or disagree with the claim that the Goose has the best reuben sandwich in the world - but their pizza is freshly baked and good pub grub. The Goose is a great place to meet with locals and is not your typical tourist pub - if you want a feel for the real Portland, pay it a visit. Also note - don't show yourself up as a tourist by ordering the common or european beers, ask the barman to recommend a local beer - you might even like it!

I have eaten there few times. Small inside with nice patio. Lot of locals hang our there. Special is corn beef sandwich and they make great pizza. Good service and get busy in summer. Good food and friendly staff.

Best Rueben Sandwich in Portlant

By Jim A |

It's a local neighborhood tavern. Kind of run down. Owned by a former Mayor of Portland. Plenty of beers and pizza. However, the highlight is the Rueben Sandwich. Nothing healthy about it.

Good food but lousy service

By TheTravelPro_us |

As a new arrival to Portland who also loves a good Reuben, I was excited to learn about the Goose Hollow Inn, which boasts "the world's best Reuben sandwich." Last weekend, we made the trek to try it out. Never again. The food was indeed good -- my Reuben, and the others' veggie burger and French dip sandwiches - but "world's best"? Doubtful. The service, though, may be among the world's worst. Seated at one of the tables, the bartender/waitress practically ignored us. She never once checked back to see if the food was OK, if we'd like another beverage, or in any way acknowledged us once she delivered the food until it was time to bring the check. Had it been busy, it might have been forgivable, but it was a very quiet Saturday night. The food is good, though not breathtaking, and they do have some interesting local beers, so if you don't mind poor service, it might be OK. Otherwise, save yourself the grief.

Nice Bite to Eat

By JJBostonMass |

Goose Hollow Inn is right across the street from the light rail stop on the way to Washington Park. We decided to stop here on the way back. Pleasant outdoor seating area on a nice summer day. Seems to be a neighborhood place. Good selection of draught beers. Split an appetizer plate with various meat, cheeses, etc. Tasty and pleasant.

Best spot for reubens and fun

By 1Teapot |

I stumbled in here by accident the first time and have been back many times since. I love reubens, but don't eat pigs and cows, so their turkey reuben is perfect for me. The staff is efficient and fun, and there is always a friendly, interesting crowd. It's not a big place but there is lovely outdoor seating that is wonderful in the summer.

Great, classic neighborhood pub

By TLJ4 |

Cold beer, strong drinks, great Reuben sandwich, covered deck. My very favorite place to have a beer in Portland!

Landmark pub with great Reuben sandwiches

By nkwins |

Remember Portland Mayor Bud Clark? His famous 1978 poster, "Expose Yourself to Art" with him featured flashing a statue was a best seller. He did a lot of great things for Portland including expanding mass transit and working on the problems of homeless people. The Bud Clark Commons is a permanent building for people transitioning from homelessness back into the mainstream. Bud Clark also opened the Goose Hollow Inn on Jefferson, near Providence Park, home of the TImbers and Thorns. Clark no longer owns it but I suspect it is much the same as when he did. Clark memorabilia decorates the walls. The pub decor is rustic and the seating areas are tight. I like these types of local eateries. After 2 hours of Segway riding, we decided to make a return visit to Goose Hollow. In my opinion, the reason to go to Goose Hollow is the Reuben sandwich. Turkey or Corned Beef, you get lots of gooey cheese and sauerkraut. The beer and hard ciders are also good. Yesterday, there was an orange flavored cider that was pretty tasty. Stop by after a Timbers or Thorns game or after a Segway tour of Portland. Enjoy patio seating or go inside. Either way, your Reuben will taste great!

A taste of good old Portland

By Edward G |

I used to live 2 blocks away. It has always been a unique place to visit and have beers. The food is a little over priced and service is questionable. I still love it and the vibe. For all you people who come to our city and complain about the rain and food -please leave. No one wanted you in the beginning.

Great Spot for a Late Snack

By Seafrog1941 |

Their Reuben Sandwiches are the real original Reuben instead of bad imitations. Place is small and fun. Staff is helpful and good.

Laid back spot

By Tubamom |

After looking at this place for years from the Goose Hollow max stop across the street, it was finally time to stop in for an early dinner. It was an excellent choice. Low key, easy to carry on a conversation, great food choices, and excellent service. We arrived about 5pm on a Tuesday andirons was about half full inside and some folks enjoying the outdoor covered seating too. It was nearly full when we left about 7 pm. We tried the Reuben, crab cocktail, roast beef sandwich, shrimp melt and potato salad. All were very good and the seafood was fresh. No room for the tempting desserts! We’ll have to try those on the next visit.

Best Rueben sandwich in Portland

By Claudiagenna |

I have been going to the Goose for 41 years, and they still have the best Ruebens in town! A casual tavern, restaurant, with many neighborhood regulars, and the owner used to be the Mayor of Portland. Nothing much has changed over the years, still friendly service, nice out door deck, right on the MAX rail system!!

Nothing special

By AlanaK221 |

We hopped off the train and ate lunch here one day while our son was napping in his stroller. We ate outside on the deck. I ordered just a small salad and grilled cheese sandwich to share with my son. They were both average, nothing special. The grilled cheese was kind of greasy. The beer was cheap though!

Fun and Funky

By Zman47 |

It was a bit of a search and stretch for the four of us but Goose Hollow was found. Parking is iffy but we came late mid week for lunch and what a find. They have a delightful array of beers available with names that boggle the imagination. The Hop Lava served ice cold was a super star winner. Each of our two couples ordered a split Reuben and they came not split but in slightly smaller portions then usually a single. It was a banquet sized half to each of us yet one would have never known. The bread was best ever and the total effect and taste of the sandwich was over the top. A back booth for four would have been better for two but friends of 40 plus years can sit close. Although the place at first glance is funky and older, looks do deceive and the total experience is worth the time, effort and money for the food. The lady server was as delightful and welcoming such that she was asked if she belonged to the Portland Chamber of Commerce Welcome Committee. This establishment is worth every penny spent on food and we will return the next time we are in the Portland area.

Good Food and Service

By Gerald S |

We stopped in here for a light dinner and a beer. The place was packed, but we were lucky enough to get a table (it was Friday night). Can't really give a food review - we just had nachos and beer, but both were good. Parking was an issue - we had to park on the street a few blocks up from the bar

Great salad and best reuben in town!

By NC5Travelers |

The salad was very tasty but the reuben was amazing! Piled high and large with a flavor that left you craving for more. Shaded patio area with nearby street parking. Variety of beer on tap. Enjoyable lunch visit.

Great hot sandwiches!

By Wendy F |

Great little neighborhood spot. Boasts "best reuben on the planet" and they aren't exaggerating! My husband tried it and highly recommends! I had the hot turkey sandwich which was excellent. Friendly service from their seasoned waitstaff. Would definitely visit again.

Great Reuben Sandwich

By Mike P |

This is a establishment that should be identified as a pub. It is a very good place to enjoy a great Reuben or Corned Beef on rye sandwich. My wife liked the halibut sandwich. The serving sizes were adequate and the price was very fair.

Healthy Reuben (Almost no meat!)

By Larry R |

The sign outside says toothsome Reuben, and inside best Reuben in the planet! It is very tasty, one could even taste the corned beef, even though you have to lift the bread to see the couple of slices. The pickle and carrot sticks were good too. And the place is cozy. I had a good beer, but it was a bit pricey. I have come here on and off for almost 30 years, never a bad bite.

Exellent Reubens and Cool Portland Bar

My family and I stopped in at the Goose Hollow Inn because it was recommended by a friend of mine. We arrived at lunchtime. The restaurant was very busy and the seating is not terribly comfortable. However, the beers were good and the reubens were great! We also really liked the potato salad that came with the reubens.

Amazing Reuben Sandwich!!!

By Bradsky |

This neighborhood pub in Portland, Oregon is a cozy place with good beer, good drinks and great food! I had their famous Reuben sandwich and it was messy and melted-cheesy and oh so good! My friend had the Turkey dip and said it was excellent. The service was very nice, and very attentive. I will go back to this place in a heartbeat!

If you truly want one of the worlds best Rubins - come here

By dede540 |

You will never have a better Rubin anywhere - I promise. This is one of Portland's favorite haunts for a reason. Very casual and fun anytime of the year.

Transphobic hate and disrespect by employees

By Shayna B |

I heard they had the very best rueben sandwiches, my friend couldnt go with me that day, so I went to try one but was greeted by an extremly transphobic employee who set out to demean me instead, so I thought OH MY GOD why did I come to Portland!? One day a suicide will be caused by people like these emplyees, they never consider what else happend that week, they just hate!

DELISH!!!!

By lbarboza0819 |

We stopped here during our annual summer motorcycle ride based on a friend's recommendation and it was just as DELICIOUS as they said it would be! The whole experience between the food, service and cool atmosphere was AWESOME!!! I had the turkey Reuben and hard cider.... none better!!! :o)

Bud's Place

By NormSFCA |

The only reason my wife and I came here today was the Underground Tour guide told us about "Expose Yourself to Art" guerrilla artist perpetrator Bud Grant. In 1980 I was doing some work in Portland and this poster of a purportedly dirty old man opening his raincoat wide to a life-size statue of a nude woman was just causing a stir. This popularity led him into local government activity. Eventually, he became a do-something mayor, expanding the new transit system, improving various city services, even inviting the corrupt police chief to lunch and then firing him right there! With the royalties to his poster, he supported various arts efforts, which seem to be part of the reason the city has so many nice parks and park lets. Now, according to young Jake, Bud hangs out here. We just missed him, the bartender told us. One of those Catch 22s - we were learning about him when he was leaving. It's an old place in good condition, a good $8 glass of merlot, photos of Grant's doings on the wall. We enjoyed ourselves but when we didn't see Bud, we left.

Neighborhood Spot

Great place to meet friends for a drink and a reuben sandwich. Funky looking place with outside seating.

Fun, local hangout

By ebk16 |

This place is loaded with atmosphere, has a great drink selection and some terrific food to go with. We shared a charcuterie platter, which was quite good, but were admonished by nephews that the ONLY thing to eat is the Ruben - which comes in four styles. We were on our way for those Rubens when we got a call to join family at Jake's (see review). I wish I had gotten the Ruben. Next time.

Can you say Reuben ?

By Bobby59 |

Goose Hollow is one of those places you have to go if you like good Reuben's-the other food is probably good too, I don't really know because I always get the Reuben, and I suggest that for you too. This place has been around for a long time and you cant go wrong. Oh ya and great micro brews too.

Insanely delicious Reubens

By jesslbarfield |

Heard this was the place for great bar food and incredible Reubens. I’d never had a Reuben before and I’m glad that this was the place to try my first one because it was absolutely delicious! Also had a quinoa and beet salad that was incredible.

My favorite!

Real pub in its 51st year. A real tribute to founder and owner Bud Clark, a Portland institution. Expose yourself to the Goose Hollow Inn for great beverage, food, service, and society in a friendly atmosphere. While I don't live in Portland, this is a must stop when I visit the city. Have been enjoying it for nearly 40 years, and I hope many more. :-)

Lunch

By Owen H |

First visit to Goose Hollow with family member for Lunch. Good pub atmosphere, good range of beers etc. Had a Reuben sandwich for the first time. It was really good.

Quite lunch!

I went for lunch with my daughter and 2 year old granddaughter, I hadn't been here for many years. Though the place looks a bit worn the food was good along with the service.

Nice Place

By Steve K |

Touted as "Best Reuben on the planet" on their website. I just had to go, me being the Reuben snob that I am. Best Reuben on the Planet? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, though. It was very good. But the best on the planet? Not even close, not by a long shot. For the best, you have to go to the east coast to a good NY Style Deli. I've been searching for a good Reuben since I moved to the Portland area in 2014. Ottos and Goose Hollow, so far, have the best. IT's a nice little pub, clean, plenty of seating, pets allowed out on the deck. But beware. If there's a TImbers game that day, make sure you go BEFORE the game lets out. I highly recommend this place.

Great atmosphere (old Portland charm) & good food

By Corinne B |

After a long walk around the Hoyt Arboretum, we stopped for an early lunch. Soup of the day was Hungarian mushroom, which was served with delicious (I think house made) croutons. I then had a spinach salad. My husband had a Reuben sandwich, which he said was among the top Ruebens he has ever had. (They are a favorite of his.) Our son had a roast beef sandwich and his fiance had a spinach salad with garlic bread.

THE BEST Seafood salad or Reuben sandwich in town!

By Milli D |

Only on Tuesday, but well worth waiting for!!! Seafood Tuesday at "The Goose" is wonderful! The salad comes with crab or shrimp or the combo. Hot crab sandwiches or a shrimp cocktail ... Fantastic! Goose Hollow Inn also makes the best sandwiches and fresh soups. The Ruben sandwich is truly special and a favorite of mine. Add a cold beer or glass of wine and enjoy sitting out on doors on the deck when weather permits. Lunches can be ordered to go, with Washington Park a few blocks away, this is perfect for an easy picnic dinner surrounded by beauty. Goose Hollow is good for meeting friends or a quick meal when in Portland. Not to be missed!

Low-key neighborhood spot

By Beth B |

This is a favorite neighborhood spot in the summer, and the patio fills up quickly. The food and beer is nothing special, but it's cheap and casual.

No place for us

By phenning |

After some indefinite waiting time we were placed at a micro-table, squeezed in corner right in front of the air condition. The menus were torn and greasy. We looked at each other and left for a more welcoming place.

Good atmosphere, good food

By karla c |

This is a little niche bar. The atmosphere is very laid back. They have a decent variety of beer and wine. Staff was friendly and attentive. The food was good. Mostly sandwiches, but very good ones. My husband had the Reuben and I had the turkey dip. Most of their sandwiches can get a gluten free bun substitution in case that's important to you. If you're tired of all the "hip scenes" of Portland and need something a little more regular or real, go here. You can actually have a conversation with the people you're with, not trying to yell over the music playing. I would definitely come here again.

When in Portland...do as the locals do

By JinPDX_12 |

Find this place, conveniently at a MAX stop so you can leave the car. DUI laws in OR are brutal so don't risk a night in the pokey. Really fun happy hour worth coming back for. If you don't have friends, make some here! Funky, fun, with a quiet, electric energy, great people watching. I've had lunch with the girls here, thrilled that it isn't going to be some chichi girly salad, but real, delicious food. Hey,a girls' gotta eat! Might as well be reubens & beer... A sunny day on the patio is Portland perfection, but a rainy day at the bar is classic. Not to be missed.

Neighborhood Favorite

Stopping here for lunch or dinner makes me feel like a local. Generous pours of house wines, well made cocktails and tasty, well prepared menu items. Try the pizza, salads, sandwiches. The veggie burger is better than most. The potato salad is deliciously home-made. Carrot sticks with every plate. We like to go on purpose or spontaneously stop when we are on the MAX; it's right across the street from a stop. Service is skilled and friendly. I like this place a lot.

Lots of kids, what a disappointment.

By tahuya292 |

What a disappointment. First of all the Goose has always been a bar first. I have been going to the Spatenhaus Tavern, Bud's place, before the Goose, for over 50 years. Always able to find a quiet corner to chat with friends, have a great sandwich and a beer. We stopped there after a five hour drive, looking forward to lunch. Well, there were about 7 to 10 kids running around all over the place. In and out of doors, bumping into patrons, no supervision. We moved twice, due to the noise level, once from a seat near the bar, to the far west side of the building,& then to the back room. The kids followed us there and played musical chairs. No peace and quiet. Parents keep control of your kids in any restaurant. I've been a server before and kids running around when the waitress is trying to deliver meals is dangerous. Think of others. If you can't keep your children under control, LEAVE THEM AT HOME.

Closes Place To Real

By dhiggs8888 |

When I first encountered the Goose, I liked the fact that the customer isn't always right. I tried to flip the waiter some smack and he let me know that "this ain't that kind of place." It was then that I knew this was my kind of place. From then on I treated the workers with respect, and they returned the favor. Since I started frequenting the Goose, two years ago, I have noticed the same workers, on the same night, week after week. This is always a good sign of a positive employee/owner relationship, and help make the atmosphere more inviting. The roast beef is by far my favorite sandwich on the menu. It's easy to see that the roast is cooked fresh on site, and the rolls are not out of a super market. I also like not leaving the place smelling of cigarette smoke and grease. Which by the way nothing is fried or grilled. And you still get the option of smoking on the deck if you please. I do enjoy my hard liquor, so after a few beers I have to go else wear, but the Goose defiantly serves its purpose as a place for me to meet with friends and get the night started. Even if that night is a weekday, which are usually the busiest nights. Get there as early after 5pm as possible, because after that you may be sitting in the back with the daily locals.
