Perfection in the Dallas suburbs

By jeshuey |

From an incredible appetizer of roasted garlic and goat cheese through the main courses of lamb chops (me) and cod on a beet puree (Miss Pat), Chef Gorji did not miss a beat. Service was exceptional, the wine list small but interesting, and something that's becoming rare in Dallas, the wine was served at a proper temperature. This could quite possibly be the best unknown restaurant in the DFW metroplex.

My favorite restaurant

By Susan T |

Superb, simply prepared cuisine in a gorgeous, beautifully lit space (just 7 tables) with top-chef Gorgi himself front and center making sure everyone is happy. (They are). I had the Grapefruit & Goat Cheese Salad and the Poached Rainbow Trout in Yogurt Sauce and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Check out his menu! If you haven’t been, you’re missing a high point of Dallas-area cuisine.

A bargain when you consider.

By Roger F |

The menu says "no tipping." We recently ate here for a special birthday dinner. The price fix 3 course menu was $79 each for 3 courses. When you consider that a 20 to 25% tip is customary the price of the meal was about $60. Each course was excellent. I am a big eater and I could not finish. The atmosphere is quiet so you can talk and stay as long as you like. The only catch is RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Several couples were turned away even though he has empty tables.

Small, Charming and Flavorful

By DSK15 |

Just found this wonderful restaurant. It has a unique take on mediterranean food that you don't usually find. We had the trout with yogurt sauce and the paella and the flavors were fantastic. We had a surprising dessert made with a kefir cheese with pomegranate sauce. What a delicious taste treat. They have a very interesting wine list too with selections from mediterranean countries. It is small and personal. The chef checked on us during the meal and came from the kitchen to say goodbye when we were leaving.

Great food; outrageous prices

By TravelTales |

I popped into Gorji tonight for dinner on the spur of the moment and, while my meal was very good and beautifully served, I was shocked by my bill. One glass of wine, a tomato salad and a piece of salmon rang up at a whopping $106 and I ordered the house Chardonnay. While my server was very attentive, it was a little weird to be the only person in the restaurant until one other solo patron arrived. I’m not sure what’s happening at Gorji, but I think it has great potential food-wise but lacks the location or menu to justify the prices. It’s Mediterranean bistro food, not fine dining. If you go, prepare to enjoy your food and be surprised by your bill. I hope this restaurant figures things out.

Not a Boar, and not BAAAAd, yummy!

By patlikestravel |

I didn't know what to expect, when I recieved a phone call confirming our reservation from the chef/owner himself! The restuarant is very small but very comfortable and open. Quiet atmosphere with lots of couples eating their fabulously prepared meals. Gorji himself took several orderied from patrons, asking them, what am I preparing you for dinner tonight! I had the lamb and my husband had the wild boar (we're from Texas and they are destroying everything, so this was his form of revenge!). We were not disappointed with our meal, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the wine we had was great, me the house merlot and the other was from Crete. It was definitley a fine dining experience. Hard to find, easier to spot from Montefort.

Our Most Favorite Resturant and Chef

By Sharon D |

We always order the mussle appetizer and steak with gorganzola sauce for my husband and the pan fried tilapia and gnocchi with gorganzola sauce. We call ahead and Chef will pick up the tilapia and mussells that morning unless unless the tilapia doesn't look good then Chef will pick up something comparable. Same for the mussels, if they are too small or not to his liking Chef will pick up the sardines for my husband. In other words, if it doesn't meet his expectations he won't serve it. My husband has also had the escargot and was very pleased with also. And the chocolate gnache cake is to die for. YUM!!!!!! Chef greets everyone when they arrive, stops by every table to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves and stops to tell you goodbye and thanks for coming. We've also attended a couple of his cooking classes and enjoyed them as well. If we lived closer we'd be there more often. Thanks Chef! We love you!

Date night

I don't pretend to know anything about Mediterranean food, or why it's spelled funny, but that restaurant is delicious. I'll be back...and soon.

Wonderful wine, beautiful atmosphere, & incredible personalized service.

By Singerp |

Canary will make you rethink everything you have known about fine dining. The chef personally welcomes you, checks on you, and ensures you have had a phenomenal evening. Kudos to Canary for the truly exceptional evening.

Consistent

By Harmony5757 |

Gorgi has never disappointed, been there several times and the food has always been good. What us amazing is how he puts unusual flavors together and it comes out really good like his smoothies for desert heirloom tomato, ice cream and Irish cream for desert Wow!!! The atmosphere is intimate so good for special occasion or treating you better half. Nice wine list and service is good (Lawrence is does a really god job)

Best service in town! No, best food! No, service.

By carlabZ3303FD |

After a warm welcome, the chef delivered menus to us with a complimentary small (shot-size) refreshing champagne cocktail. That detail set the scene for the meal. Everything here is beautifully and exceptionally done. The chef is also the host and server. And the food is unique too. What would be the usual bread anywhere else is served hot from the grill. Perfectly grilled vegetables arrived with the entrees. The catfish is served on an excellent bed of greens and artichoke hearts with a snappy garlic dressing. And a grilled avocado. Two other unexpected things— the restaurant doesn’t hide any prices and doesn’t accept tips. Judging by the number of happy diners who were greeted like family at the door, Canary has made a splash in this location, which is strip mall gone fancy. And I know what brings people back — remarkable food and true service.

Restaurant Week in Dallas - words can't describe the explosion of flavors.

By RoundWorld80 |

2012 Restaurant week - scrumptious escargot pomodoro, delicious veal rib with pomogranite, unbelievable lamb and squab.....my mouth is soooo happy. What a gem! Can't wait for the dessert course. Date and kefir....

Best restuarant in Dallas/Addison

By Jim S |

I have enjoyed eating at Gorji for more than 10 years. Always a great meal and fantastic service. From the best steaks you have ever eaten to Mediterranean specialties, always top notch! Restaurant seating is back! GO, enjoy!

Hit and miss

By KJ D |

Last time I visited the patio was open, service was great, and they comp'd roasted garlic. Last night the service was rushed, it was too loud, the servers seemed in bad moods, and honestly the food was just okay. I expect more from Canary. Maybe it was just an off night. I will give him a do-over.

Not worth it

By Veronica S |

The food is definitely not worth the price. It’s pretty average. This place is over hyped. There are so many restaurants in this area that are 10x better

Fine, classy, elegant, easy, warm..

By Vallabhaneni A |

One of the very very best restaurants in Dallas. Chef Gorji's place is not very big, just enough to cater to the select few who like a place with a great taste. Very flavorful food. Really warm staff. Never disappointed. My go to place for anniversary or birthday dinner.

Amazing food and service, great atmosphere

By v v |

We had a great dinner here, among the best I've ever had. The chef visited with the tables a little bit making the experience even more cozy. The restaurant is small, but the lighting and atmosphere are nice. I had the filet tips and my husband had the wild boar as the main course. Both very tender. Dessert was great too, I had a cheese specialty with fig sauce. Thanks!!!

Absolutely Incredible

By Smoochesvwb |

Love the intimate setting, love Gorgi, and love that it is small yet not crowded. The food is beyond comparison. I like that Chef Gorgi greets every guest and makes sure the food is to your liking. We were there for Valentines Day and staring into my dates eyes I felt that we were all alone in a private dining situation. We never felt rushed and it seems our glasses were never empty. Not too much food and not too little...it was just right. My date was from the Carolinas but quickly said he believed this would be his favorite place to eat in Dallas.

Great!

By Don C |

The food and service were outstanding. My Copper River salmon was the best that I’ve had. My wife savored every bit of her lamb and quail and our friends loved their steaks. The other nice thing about the restaurant, it was quiet....which is unusual these days.

Unique experience

By ny2plano |

Very small place with extremely personal service. Food is unique and served to perfection. However it is very expensive and portions are small.

OVERSALTED

By HawaiiLover81 |

Service is great, the wine selection is good, and the food was tasty.......except...for.....THE SALT. I was really looking forward the the ribeye that everyone raves about. Keep in mind, I've had prime ribeyes at alot of good restaurants such as Pappas Bros, SW Steakhouse in Vegas, Sullivans, Del Friscos, Jaspers, etc so I know what a good ribeye tastes like. The first 3 bites were outstanding! I was also happy that, temperature wise, the steak came out very hot ensuring the steak would not get luke-warm before the end of the meal. So, thumbs up for that. Unfortunately, after the 3rd bite the steak was too salty. I couldn't taste anything but salt which overpowered the other flavors like the pomegranate and even the creaminess of the pomegranate gnocchi. I'd like to give it another chance, but for 175$ total, I don't see that happening in the near future. Over-salting food is cooking 101. Big let down.

wow

By ny2plano |

Went there on a Saturday with wife and 2 daughters. Wow. Very small place that is run by chef/owner. Unique menu. Everything was exceptional.

Great personal service in an intimate atmosphere

By HomeDallas |

Can't miss with the Mediterranean dishes in this place. Every one is superb. Get on the mailing list for great fixed price special dinners. Great wines too. The owner chef always comes out to greet you. Try it - you will like it.

Terrific Dining Experience

By _amanda_hartwell |

My first time to Canary and what a treat it was. I had the venison steak special and it was amazing. I just couldn't believe how good it was. I've tried venison before and have always found it disappointing. Everything we had was so flavorful and spot on. You can tell the chef is passionate about his food and puts a great deal of care into it.

Different and Very Good

By Michael B |

Met a dear friend for dinner. Conveniently located in Addison. Only seats 7 and tips are included in price. Chef very engaged in the dining room and helps you with selections, etc. The wait staff are very attentive. Friendly guys who take time to explain and answer questions. I had filet and shrimp. Steak was perfect. Prawns were a little to butter soaked for me. Veggies great. Okra and cauliflower...very delicious. Dessert was good. Flourless chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. If I lived in Dallas I would come back. Unique menu and type of place that is intimate and very good.

Great food in a welcoming atmosphere

By Christine C |

This restaurant has been on my try list for years and I'm kicking myself now for waiting so long. Just think of all the wonderful meals I could have been enjoying here. Luckily we were at a table for four and we each ordered something different so we were able to taste a few things. I would happily order any of the entrees again. The Beef Anar, the chicken stuffed with prosciutto and spinach, the steaks were all excellently prepared and the side of gnocchi in gorgonzola was devilishly delicious. The wine list has some lovely well-priced options that beautifully compliment the Mediterranean flavors. And don't miss dessert. We didn't really have room for the chocolate cake or the wild berry sorbet but that didn't stop us from finishing every bite. Chef Gorji is warm and inviting. We'll definitely be back...I have to make up for lost time.

Great for quiet romantic dinners

By keleko68 |

My wife and I went for our 4th wedding anniversary last week. We have gone there for other special occasions and have never been disappointed. There are only eight tables and reservations are required. But the table is yours for the night. The atmosphere is one of the most romantic you can find in the area. There aren’t any TVs, and the music is low and appropriate for the style of food they serve. Chef Gorji personally cooks every meal, and his passion for cooking and attention to detail truly shows. He comes out to greet you, as well as to check on you to make sure everything was wonderful. You don’t get that kind of service anywhere else. I had the catfish, which is one my favorite dishes from there. It came in a cool glass platter. My wife had the tenderloin. We could see why it has gotten the recent accolades… it was unbelievable. We had Chef recommend a red wine to go with our meals, which was of course, wonderful. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake, which resembled a brownie. Again, like everything else, tasted amazing. If you have a business dinner or other special occasion coming up, consider Canary By Gorji. You won’t be disappointed.

Small, elegant but casual and heaven for a foodie.

By Baronnovel |

Corner strip mall location, much more high end than the location would indicate. Perhaps 12 tables max. Owner is Persian high end Chef. Personalized service, intimate atmosphere, amazing mix of foods and styles. Middle Eastern, Greek, French fusion. Very fine food, drink and service. Expensive but worth it Amazing place.

Wonderful Amazing Food & Service!

By suzzyf |

Wow! I just had one of the best restaurant experiences in Dallas and it wasn't up or downtown. Canary By Gogi is one extraordinary dining experience! The restaurant is small but the food and service are BIG in experience! Chef Gorgi is attentive to all diners, approaching all tables course by course! And the food oh my goodness the food is exemplary! Our group of 6 noshed on two appetizers, the Mediterranean Mezze and the Roasted Garlic and Bulgarian Feta which were savory and chock full o' flavor! The wines were glorious especially the Newsom Vineyard Kick Butt Cabernet! Entrees are delish we enjoyed Butter Seared Texas Shrimp, Mediterranean Short-Bill Spearfish, Colorado Lamb T-Bone and Texas Wild Boar Tenderloin & Scallops all were cooked to perfection with scrummy sides to accompany! And the service! PERFECTION! Attentive not cloying, gracious and helpful...not trying to turn the table fast. If you are a Dallas diner you relish these rare qualities! Chef Gorgi is a humble master of great food and service. He is a 5- star chef who is attentive to patrons, giving us a unique dining experience. I will return and will sing the praise of this truly wonderful restaurant to all I know!

One of the best.

Service was excellent, as was the food. Our experience could not have been better. As we were leaving ths chef was at the door to thank us for visiting.

This restaurant is small size but big on taste, and the owner/chef lovingly prepares and watches over every entrée. There are only a few tables so reservations are a must. Selections change seasonally. Canary has a reasonably good wine list and they are prepared to discuss and make pairing recommendations. We will be back.

Intimate atmosphere and amazing food!

By Feliciabowl |

Homemade pastas, off the boat fish, unique wines and an intimate atmosphere where the chef takes time to visit your table. A must visit for epicureans and foodies! Try the apple ice wine.

Good but not Great

By Josephus972 |

Went with another couple who were celebrating her birthday. Enjoyed the evening and I thought the food fairly good but the service very good. The restaurant is small, having only about 10 tables total. The atmosphere is pleasant. The restaurant owner/manager is accommodating and more than friendly (in a good way). The other couple and we had appetizers and salads. We all enjoyed our salads but my wife and I had the escargot which we found somewhat disappointing. Mine contained some grit and the snails were either overcooked or, perhaps, not very fresh. i.e. They didn't, "pop" when bitten. For entrees the other gentleman had the pork chop which he said was quite tasty. My wife had the shrimp in a butter sauce and she thought they were very good. The other lady and I had the rib eye. It was just, ordinary. Hers, which was ordered Medium, was served near Medium Rare or even closer to Rare. i.e. Way undercooked although she didn't send it back and when the owner found out about her dissatisfaction he offered to replace it. She declined his offer so he comped her dessert. Mine was cooked correctly but had quite a bit of fat and gristle and was lacking in flavor so it was certainly not worth the price. We all had desserts which although all were finished were, I felt, unremarkable. Canary by Gorji is a personal favorite of the other couple. My wife and I found the entire experience marginally OK but too expensive for the results and, based upon this visit, we are unlikely to return.

Fabulous Experience, MUST HAVE RESERVATION

By CJPlano |

Canary is a small place with an ever-changing menu based on what's fresh and wonderful. Chef starts with the freshest, choicest ingredients, which makes his dishes art. The setting is intimate. With only 8 four-tops and typically one seating per night, it's quiet and unhurried. It also means you have to have a reservation. I would imagine Chef prepares based on the number of reservations. We saw several people be turned away at the door because they didn't have a reservation (during restaurant week, no less!). The service is as intimate as you'd expect from a restaurant that has only 8 tables. Chef if ever-present and available for questions/comments. The atmosphere is quiet enough that you can hear the background music. This is a nice change. I'd almost forgotten what it's like to go to a nice restaurant and be able to talk quietly. The food was amazing for restaurant week. My companion started with the scallop appetizer. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the accompanying relish was delish. I had the signature escargot, which were also magnificent. For mains, we had the grilled pork chop and the salmon. The pork chop was one of the best anywhere. The salmon was tasty. The desserts - berry sorbet and flourless chocolate cake - were also divine, and the coffee European. If there was anything that detracted from the experience, it's that Chef is a bit of a micromanager. There were times we'd hear a shout of "Use both hands" or something like that which reminded me some of a reality tv show. I was amused, but my companion found it a little off-putting. We had a lovely evening and will defintely be back.

Fantastic dinner

By EvanChuYang |

Had a fantastic dinner at Gorji Restaurant. The food was exceptional, with every dish impressing me. It’s a bit expensive, but for treating yourself from time to time, it’s perfect. I suggest saving this place for something special. Definitely a 5-star experience.

Fabulous dinner experience

By Odyssey447697 |

My husband and I had dinner at this lovely little restaurant without any clue how special the experience would be. We were on a business trip in Dallas and picked the restaurant from its online reviews. The chef is amazing and the service was stellar. We loved the bottle of Grenache we chose (of which the chef owns the last remaining 5 cases), and everything we ordered was sumptuously delicious. If you want to be pampered like you're a famous A-lister, have dinner at Canary by Gorjii. I just wish he'd open shop in Seattle!

A hidden gem in Dallas

Intimate setting (12 tables). First class service (where else does the chef visit with you at your table?). Wonderful food that is beautifully presented. A great dining experience.

Restaurant Week 2015

By Chelsea C |

Just ate here for restaurant week.... very delicious. The service was wonderful. I had the salmon with shrimp, and also sampled the escargot. The standout of the meal was the texas, goat cheese lasagna. MMMMMMMHHHMMMM! Will definately be coming back to experience all Chef Gorji.

Best in Dallas

By IslaHolic4Ever |

Canary by Gorji is where we go for a consistently excellent meal! A quiet restaurant with only 10 tables (and no young children allowed). Service beyond compare, never rushed through a meal, food is outstanding, unique flavors, delicious desserts, nice wine list at affordable prices! What more could you ask for...nothing in my opinion!

Mansour is Great

By jghonze |

Amy and I have been to the Canary Cafe several times. Mr Gorgi is always extremely friendly. The staff that he has is some of the best that I have ever come across. (I have worked in food & beverage for 18 yrs). The food is always fresh and inviting. And definately different flavors to widen anyones horizons. Mansour is meticulous with every plate that leaves the kitchen. He makes a special point to come out and check on how everything is. It is very nice to have the Owner/Chef personally come to your table to make sure everything is up to his standards. We will definately dine there over and over. You have to try the Hummus and of course his AWARD WINNING Steak.

Fabulous

This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Mr Gorji is not only an extraordinary chef but he is also a great host and a very interesting person to meet. The food is delicious and the place is perfect, not so big to make you feel like a very special guest.

Perfection personified

By h0meintexas |

My wife and I had been here a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed it. So when a friend wanted to go out to grab a bite to eat, I suggested Canary. I want to be perfectly clear. Chef Gorji is a genius. We started out with the sample appetizer, and all the dishes were perfect. Fresh, tasty and colorful. We had the tomato basil soup next. To die for!! My friend had a steak, which he said was perfection. The sauce enhanced the flavor of the perfect steak, unheard of. And it was fork tender. I had the tenderloins in pomegranate sauce. Again made with love and a dedication to freshness and being cooked right. Great place for a night out with the wife or with friends. Highly recommend.

Must go

This is a gem of a restaurant in the Addison area. Great food and service. Prime ribeye is to die for. Excellent wine list

First time visit

By Brandy B |

A friend recommended the restaurant so we decided to try it. The chef was so nice and seated/served us. He always told the prices and selections ahead of time. Food was perfectly proportioned and amazing. Wine delectation was great we had the prefix menu, each of had something different so we were able to enjoy more than our own dish. The medallions with Gnochi so great. Salad fresh. Avocado appetizer great. It was a great experience. We will be back again.

Wonderful

Truly one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Dallas. Friendly, accommodating and doesn’t try to rush you to eat quick and leave. Enjoyed every dish and service as well.

One of the very few times the chef has ever come to my table just to ask if we were pleased

By James M |

We found this restaurant by accident and were blown away by the attention to detail. The appetizers were excellent, steaks cooked to perfection, and desserts wonderful. Chef Gorji even takes time from his kitchen duties to come out and visit each table and visit for a few minutes. This has never happened at any other restaurant I've visited over the last 40 years! We have been back 4 or 5 times and the food, fantastic service and dress code (yes, they do have a dress code and it is enforced) continues at the same high levels Chef demands of himself.

Anniversary

By phyllis e |

This was exactly what we were looking for in ambience and we struck a gold mine! We called the restaurant and left a message we received a return call about 15 min. later and we were in that night! Talk about last minute dinner plans! We were grateful that chef was able to take our reservation. He did not disappoint! We were greeted by Chef Gorji at the door. He seated us and suggested the wine list (this is all he serves to drink besides sparkling water) Now that's a great start! this means there is a very nice wine list. So nice I had trouble deciding on a wine and Chef was happy to help me. My husband and I made different meal choices 3 course meals with desert. Everything came out of the kitchen exactly perfect with no rush between servings. While I waited for my appetizer I took the time to walk around the restaurant to look at Chef Gorji's trophy's and own line of food products! These are found on his website and art Whole foods markets. I went home with a gift too! Thank you Chef Gorji for a memorable wedding anniversary and we are looking forward to more dinners at your restaurant. Bon Appetit!

I've lived within a few miles of this restaurant for years and tried it for the first time tonight. I am so glad I did. It was fantastic. Everything was great, but nothing overdone, and chef Gorji is about as friendly as you can imagine. I highly recommend the beef anar.

Been several times food is always on point. Severer Lawrence is excellent. Great special occasional place. Georgie has taught them proper ways of doing things.

Unique, Flavorful, Personalized

By a-travelin-foodie |

Found this from TA, as we were looking for a good steak that was not in a typical Dallas chop house and was no hormone/no antibiotic.....found that steak and SO MUCH MORE! Started with the sardines and the escargot - OMG the sardines were beyond amazing!!! And maybe the biggest I've ever seen. Dad loved the escargot; they were a unique preparation not in garlic butter but almost a tomato/ratatouille style. The filet was cooked perfectly and came with perfectly grilled shrimp and the best non-Indian okra I've ever had! Plus.....gnocchi to die for.Lamb chops also perfect - everything seasoned simply but flavorfully. Dessert was a beautifully plated fig/date (sorry, I forgot) on a yogurt/mascarpone(?) - a tad small for two, but we were pretty stuffed but had to see if it was as heavenly as it sounded - and it was. Wine selection is eclectic with many unique, Mediterranean offerings. Chef Gorji is a critical part of the atmosphere - he's very interested in your dining experience and clearly discusses his menu and goals with his staff. Not a lot of tables, but you don't feel crowded in, either, nor do you feel rushed. Definitely make reservations. What a special treat.

"Better than prime " steak in a relaxed, unhurried, cozy atmosphere !

By cnm51 |

My sister and I called this cafe after an entire day of shopping. Even though it was late, 9:45 p.m. the owner-chef, Georgie, assured us it was fine to come in after 10 p.m. and have a relaxing meal. What a fabulous place to unwind! Quiet, low-lit, atmosphere, with tables spread out enough to converse and not have to speak over your neighbors conversation. Georgie is a very hands-on owner who frequently visits his patrons who feel like they are dining in his home and have been friends forever! But now for the FOOD !!! My sister had wild-caught salmon (superb!) and I had one of the best rib-eyes I have ever had! It was a mix of Bonsmara (an African breed) and Texas Longhorn, both grass-eating cattle , making them much healthier than your average steak , yet extremely tender and delicious with outstanding seasoning! Both dishes were accompanied by roasted beets, turnips, and carrots. Also, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Many choices of salads were offered, but we chose the Greek salad which was excellent and creatively presented. The Cafe has an extensive wine list and generously poured glasses. A superb chocolate mousse cake ended our meal. We left @ 11:30, having never been rushed, completely satisfied, and feeling like we had been visiting a dear friend for the evening. We'll definitely be back, Georgie!!

Enchanting restaurant

By Stephen M |

We found this restaurant complete by accident. We were looking for a place to eat dinner and looked at our GPS for nearby restaurants. We saw the funny name "Canary" and Mediterranean food and decided to try it. This is a small 10-table restaurant with an open kitchen. The chef Gorji greets everyone who enters. Gorji had only one helper in the kitchen. There were two waiters. The food was excellent and the service was excellent. The waiters were very attentive without "hovering". The chef came to our table several times during the meal to discuss the dishes. At one point our waiter brought us spoons and said, "You're going to want to drink the salad dressing and we want you to know it's OK." At the end of the meal Gorji brought us an experimental lamb rib dish that is not yet on the menu. It was the best lamb I've ever tasted. If you live in or are visiting the DFW area, you have to try this restaurant!

5 star service, food and ambiance.

By Kristie G |

In a nut shell this is an amazing place to have a romantic date night. It's a genuine treat and we are already planning to return with friends. NOTE: You must make reservations and he is only open 4 hours a night. So make sure you call him to plan for that. First off we learned the Gorji has been here for many years, hidden in plain sight. I drive by on a regular and never knew he was here. There are about 10 tables and he does not like to seat people next to one another so he will never have more than 4 tables seated at one time. He does not allow children in the restaurant as he wants this to be a place of experience for the adult palette. The chef himself comes out at each course to ensure you are enjoying what he has prepared. It's the perfect place to feel pampered and special. I can't say enough good things. There is nothing I can see that would need to be improved, thus the 5 star rating. (people that would judge down for rules that are understood up front [ie: children], have no valid point.) Gorji himself travels 100 miles EACH DAY to get the produce and meats for the days menu. He has items that stay on the regular menu, but the "Special of the Day" depends on what he deemed perfect for the meal. Of course we chose this option. This is a three course meal that you can choose form two options. An app, a side and a main course. We decided to get one of each so we got to try all six items offered. Because the menu changes daily on the special it would not be really beneficial to detail what we had however let me tell you I tried things (fresh anchovies) that I never would have tried anywhere else. The combination of things on the plate would have never been in my dreams to combine together but the flavors of all 5 things was absolutely breathtaking. You will not be disappointed I guarantee.

Worth Every Penny

By SlyFoxx |

We went to Canary by Gorji during a recent weekend in Dallas. You definitely will need a reservation because this is a small, beautiful restaurant that fills up quickly. Something I really respect about this restaurant is that even though it's small, they don't try to make up for it by putting too many tables into the space. Diners have a cozy, intimate setting for their meal, and you can just tell that this is part of the owner's plan for people to have an unhurried dining experience to enjoy. Let me just say at the outset that while the price range given here ($25-$50 entrees/person) is totally correct, you're going to be tempted by the appetizers and salads and desserts, so plan for this to be a good bit more per person. There's just no getting around it when food is this good, but you'll be a willing victim. Everything we ate showed careful, loving attention. For example, we had the Mediterranean Mezze platter (hummus, tzatziki, tabbouleh, dolmades) as an appetizer, and it was not only delicious but also a work of art in its presentation. We both had the Texas Wild Boar Tenderloin & Scallops (served with gnocchi gorgonzola and grilled campari tomato) as the entree, and it was absolutely melt-in-your-mouth. (Side note here...I'm not much of a foodie, so I didn't know what campari is. It's an Italian liqueur that's usually described as "bitter." More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campari. Works beautifully with the tomato!) I could have eaten a plate of the gnocchi alone and been satisfied, but the wild boar wasn't to be missed. If you've never had wild boar (I hadn't), the taste and texture won't make you think of pork, but more of a beef with a sweet, kind of nutty undertone. Exceptional, and I'm not always a fan of meat, so it means something when I say that. Everyone we've talked to also says that if you get steak here, it will probably be one of the best you've ever nom-nommed on. As others have said, the wine selection is excellent. We split a bottle of Chilean red with our meal, and then, yes, we did have desserts. Mine was a mixture of ice cream in expresso that slowly and beautifully melded together into something very like the best mocha milkshake I've ever had. There was no alcohol in it, so this wasn't an after-dinner coffee...but if you like coffee, this is worth having! With a shared appetizer, two entrees, wine, dessert, and tip, it was about $180 for two people. Sure, we could have stuck to wine and entree only, but it would have been a huge loss to have missed the full experience that Canary by Gorji has to offer. Gorji also sells his cookbook, in case you're a better cook than me and would like to try making these fabulous dishes at home. About Gorji -- he's larger than life with his humor, warmth, and friendliness, and he made us feel like we were the only guests he had. (Which was funny because from all the happy faces at the tables around us, I could tell they all felt the same way.) The staff did a perfect job of providing just the right amount of attentive service without over-hovering and being intrusive. Thumbs up!

Hole in the wall w/ excellent service.

I decided to have my team dinner at this restaurant. The key to the continued success of this place is the disciplined approach of the staff and the chef. From the experience of making reservations to exiting the restaurant everything was beautifully orchestrated by the team. Add to that the food quality was excellent.

simply the best

Make your reservations if it is a weekend. We have been disappointed when we drop by and the restaurant if full. This is our favorite restaurant in Dallas. When we bring out-of-towners to the Canary they don't want to go anywhere else. and talk about it for days. It doesn't matter what you order, It is all spectacular.

As good as ever

By Stephen M |

This was our second visit to chef Gorji's restaurant. The food and the service were as great as we remembered. Previously my wife and I dined alone. This time we were with a group of friends. It's ever more fun when you can see (and taste) all the other dishes at the table. Canary is not an inexpensive restaurant, but you owe it to yourself to go there for a special occasion.

Absolute Perfection! One of a kind!

This is by far the best experience you will ever have in DFW. I haven't been everywhere, but I clearly try plenty of nice places. I love that when you walk in they know who you are and greet you promptly. Lawrence has been the only waiter there each time I have been and he does an outstanding job. There are only 12 tables total in the whole place. It has a modern but intimate/romantic feel. I honestly like that there is a place in Dallas I can go and not hear kids screaming or be rushed out before I have even finished my dessert because the restaurant would like to seat the next guest. They have oil candles on the table with little flowers. Everything is tastefully decorated and well kept. The waiter brings us a palate cleanser of champagne and cranberry before taking our order for drinks. He also swiftly brings out some toasted bread and olive oil with parmesan. These items are both compliments of Chef Gorji. We placed our drinks, appetizer and food order promptly there after. I like that we have time to enjoy our appetizer and each other before the Lawrence comes back to take our entre order. They will of coarse accommodate you however you'd like to do things, but I highly suggest taking your time :) A little side note: leave your cell phone in the car on the night you go. It truly makes it all the more enjoyable for you and everyone else. We tend to order the hummus at Gorji's because I love the garlic infusion. We've also had the brie and garlic which is incredible as well. I like that both of these apps come out rather quickly. The hummus is delicious blend of chickpeas, oil, garlic and I am sure some additional seasoning. The entrees are INCREDIBLE! It is so rare to find a perfectly cooked and seasoned steak that is served up so hot and tender. I eat every bite, every time. Delish! Let's not forget about the scrumptious veggies that are served with I believe every meal. The carrots and okra both still have a nice crunch and great flavor. This time I decided to try the poached shrimp with parmesan infused basmati rice. The rice is absolutely amazing. The shrimp were cooked thoroughly and evenly and paired with a zesty sauce that I wanted to dip everything in. Seriously, Gorji I need a bottle of this stuff! I can't say enough to go try this place! It's incredible. I find it very hard to believe anyone would ever, ever leave this place disappointed.

Delicious Romance

My husband and I were in Dallas for a short visit and had heard this was the place to go. The atmosphere is welcoming and intimate but also formal in a really nice way. It’s been a long time since crumbs were cleaned away between courses. But it isn’t stuffy - Gorji and James welcome each patron and make them feel like invited guests. And then there is the food and wine. There are no words. The creativity and meticulous care given to each item show the love Gorji puts into each morsel. My 68-year-old husband has plenty of steak experience, and he claims this was the best he had ever had. And the wines! What a treat to read about - and then savor. And savor we did - four courses! But we didn’t leave feeling stuffed or bloated - it was all just perfect. Just perfect! Gratitude to our marvelous hosts!!!!

Perfect night out

Lovely experience, enjoyed chatting with Gorji and our server, food was really good, and we look forward to going back!

Excellent every single time!

Canary is one of those places you go when you want an intimate experience that never fails to please. Chef Gorgi is there every night cooking your meal, himself! He cooks with inspiration and care to ensure every diner feels like they are the only diner. The food is always delicious and beautifully prepared. It's my "go to" for any special occasion.

Very fancy!

My friend and I were in the mood for Mediterranean food for dinner. We arrived at Canary Cafe in casual attire for dinner and instantly we knew that it was not the typical art drawing on the walls and gyro restaurant. However, we still stayed because the host/chef/owner of the restaurant (Gorji) was so friendly the moment we entered. He asked if we had reservations, but we did not. It was not a problem, but perhaps in the future it may be helpful to make reservations. The atmosphere was very classy and formal (I definitely felt underdressed). The air conditioning was very chilly, so bring something to layer (but the servers were very attentive and brought me some hot water to sip). We ordered the hummus and dolmades for appetizers and the chicken artichoke and the salmon anar for dinner. Everything was made to order and very fresh. It was delicious!! For one appetizer and one entree, I spent approximately $30. I would recommend this restaurant for fine dining and for a different Mediterranean experience without gyros and falafel.

Our Favorite Restaurant

By Araness |

We always make a point of eating at Canary Cafe while in Dallas, several times we have canceled other reservations to eat primarily at Canary. The restaurant is superb, atmosphere is relaxing without being casual. The staff is well trained and show the perfect level of attentiveness, Gorji always greets us with open arms and a warm smile. I can't say enough about the food, everything is outstanding. Fresh ingredients and a high level of mastery make this one of the true hidden gems of Dallas. If undecided about menu choices try his award winning steak. For a smaller establishment he has a nice and affordable selection of wines. All of the above combined make this our favorite restaurant.

Excellent food made with love

We celebrated my mother's 60th birthday here. I spent days looking for something very fine but extremely unique and came across Canary in a local reviewers blog. Reservations were recommended and I am glad we called. I phoned two weeks prior to Wednesday, the 26th of October to make a reservation and left a message specifying our desired date and time. Gorji, the owner and chef, called me back within an hour to confirm. The night we arrived our table was ready and waiting for us. There are only 10 tables in the place and two others were occupied when we arrived at 6:30pm. By the time we left at 9pm, all tables were full. Thank goodness we made reservations. Our group chose to have the special for the evening, a pork loin with gnocchi and carrots, a wonderful arugula salate, and finished with homemade ice cream topped with chocolate liquor. Gorji made multiple appearances to our table recommending items, pouring our wines, and sharing his best wishes to my mother for her birthday. We were very pleased and considering we are a three generation family in the fine food business, we can be very critical of others. Gorji, many thanks to you for making our evening so special. Your divine cuisine and humble appreciation for your guests is refreshing in todays 'speed them through the chow line' restaurant culture. Many thanks!

Chef Gorji is top notch!

By cosmopoliteone |

This has become my favorite restaurant. The food is always delicious and interesting; not your "run of the mill" menu. Try the wild boar and the kefir dessert. Chef Gorji serves a small refreshing champagne drink to start off, and always takes the time to come out and greet his customers and checks to make sure everything is to your liking. The restaurant itself is not big and fancy, but the ambiance is cozy and welcoming!

Great food and attention from chef/owner

By Linda N |

I just droped in for dinner. What a great surprise. Impeccable service. Food fantastic and the chef came to my table asking if all was okay. Flourless chocolate cake was scrumptious, moist, melt in your mouth. No television in the place a plus in my book. Thank you Chef Gorgi. Highly recommend this restaurant .

Personal Touch!

By candyholdsworth |

Very quaint place with personal touch! You are greeted by someone to open the door for you and escorted to your table where you feel as if you are the only person there with your personal chef and waitstaff. All of the food is fresh and the beef tenderloin didn't even need a knife to cut it. The pomegranate cream sauce is to die for. Chef Gorji takes pride in all the food and I love the personal service of him going to every table to make sure your dining experience is the best it can be. The flourless chocolate cake is so decadent and rich! I would definitely recommend this place for a special occasion that will not disappoint you!

Always Special

By Lee F |

If you like big, crowded dining rooms, this is not the restaurant for you. A small dining room designed for each of seven or eight tables to have a sense of privacy. Standard menu, but what really appeals to us is the special menu which runs for two or three days. We had scallops for appetizer and wonderful venison---tender and beautifully cooked. Tastes are exceptional and when we had a question about the green almonds, the chef replied himself. Service is well coordinated and waiter was knowledgeable of the changing and eclectic wine list. It is refreshing to get the bill and not have to "do the math" for tip calculation in this no tipping restaurant.

Better than ever

By Kelly J |

I always have a good dinner at Canary, but the last trip topped them all. I love meals that are prepared in a way I haven't had before and the creativity here is inviting and delicious. The wine list is hand-selected and has never disappointed me -many selections are available by the glass. And, as always, chef Gorji and the staff make everyone feel welcome. This isn't Southern comfort food, but it's not over the top either. If you like trying things new things and like great food, be sure to give them a visit.

Intimate & Delicious

By Deborah B |

We’ve had Canary by Gorji on our “list of restaurants to visit” for some time but just hadn’t gotten around to dining there. We made reservations for New Year’s Eve and are so glad we did! The restaurant is small and intimate yet tables are perfectly placed where you are not too close to others. The wait staff was attentive and Chef Gorji personally checked on every table several times throughout the night. The food was fresh, high quality and creative. New Year’s Eve included a four-course menu. My husband got the Avocado & Shrimp appetizer and I got the Bulgarian Feta with pomegranate. Both were good but the Bulgarian Feta was fabulous. This was followed by a Kale Caesar and Berry Mixed Green salad – both were delicious. The entrees we chose were the Arctic Char with Shrimp and the Filet – both were excellent. Dessert was a raspberry sorbet and Tiramisu. The wine list was extensive, not in the number of wines offered, but rather the area/countries represented. It was different and interesting, there were wines from Israel, Greece, Turkey, Chile, California, Australia, etc. - something for everyone. We will definitely dine again soon at Canary!

Friendly Staff, Fair Tastes

By YacchanAmarone |

I visited this restaurant for dinner with my colleagues in the office. The atmosphere was good and the server was friendy and polite, which made us feel comfortable. We shared mezze (assortment of cold appetizer) which was not bad. For main course, I ordered Ribeye steak and it was fair but not so outstanding since the fat was not impressive for me. We ordered Texas red wine, which was our first try, however, we agreed that we should have ordered other wine... Nonetheless, it was true that this restaurant was comfortable for its atmosphere and attitude of server. If you come to this restaurant, I would recommend to try other steaks and other wine.

Great experience, excellent service, wonderful food

By Deborah B |

We’ve had dinner at Canary multiple times for special occasions as well as regular Saturday date nights and we are never disappointed. The food is always top quality; service is impeccable and Chef Gorji personally comes around to make sure you are pleased with your meal. I love the fact that Canary is small, intimate and different. You feel as if you have been invited into Chef Gorji’s private dining room for a special meal prepared specifically for you. He is warm, friendly and his food is excellent. On our most recent visit, my husband selected the Copper River Salmon and much to my husband's bewilderment, I selected the catfish entrée. Being raised in the south, catfish was a staple growing up but I'd not seen it on the menu in a fine dining setting before. I knew if anyone could elevate the lowly catfish, it would be Chef Gorji – I was not disappointed. My husband, who does not care for catfish, said it was delicious, on par or better than his salmon entree. FYI, Canary discourages and/or may not allow children in the restaurant, which makes it even more special and a step above other restaurants. There is nothing worse than having a nice meal disrupted by loud, poorly behaved parents and children sitting at a nearby table. Canary is a “no tip” restaurant and the wait staff is attentive, consistent, knowledgeable and pleasant. Canary is a gem and we hope it is in business for many years to come. Reservations are required and are typically confirmed personally by Chef Gorji. We would highly recommend Canary by Gorji.

Chef owned and run

This place has incredible food and ambiance. Chef owned and run, changing menus, great wine pairings and wonderful service. Eight intimate tables and Chef Gorji cooks every plate!

Fantastic Evening Better Food

By John J |

There wasn't much I didn't love about this place. The inside décor was very well done - warm and inviting. Very friendly service, no wait with a reservation (needed as only a few tables). Chef Gorji visits every table several times to make sure you are pleased. On to the food...We went during Restaurant Week and it was a fantastic menu. The grilled Italian bread with Chef's dipping oil was a great start with our wine. Lots of choices on the wine list and have to say our wine was excellent, but just to warn he has a pretty expensive list (house wines start at $15). The first course, Gorji Escargot (mixed with sliced portabella and Pomodoro sauce) was outstanding. The homemade feta and pomegranates was very good as well. My spouse had the quail and lamb T-bone (with grilled vegetables and gnocchi) for her entrée. Everything on the plate was cooked to perfection, with both meats being tender, juicy and flavorful. It was a bit too much pepper for her taste, but still very enjoyable. I had the prime porch chop with grilled vegetables and gnocchi. This tender and juicy pork chop was the best I have tasted. Those first two courses were as good as any restaurant I have dined. Desert did not disappoint as we had the ice cream topped with mulberries and pistachios, and the homemade Kefir & Medjool Date Butterfly. Both were good, but the Kefir was the best we felt. Perfect match with the cheese and the date. We look forward to our return to Gorji's!

Amazing Experience

By David O |

I was trying to find a new dining experience for our anniversary, and I came across Gorji’s in the best 100 restaurants in Dallas list. Great reviews and the description sounded very interesting, so I decided to give it a try. You definitely have to be on the ball to be able to get a reservation. They only accept reservations 6 days in advance and they only serve 7 tables per night. I stayed up until midnight and was able to get our reservation in for a Friday night. The hassle was definitely worth it. There were only two people working there, a server and the owner/chef. They were both very personable and attentive and made sure everything came out perfectly. With only 7 tables, this made it a very personal and intimate experience. They have a very eclectic wine list from exotic locales. The wine we chose from Lebanon was outstanding. The menu is small, but still had a good range of food to choose from. I ordered the venison and my wife had the ribeye steak. I have never had such tender meat in my life, and for a meat that is usually gamy and stringy, that is really saying something. I have never taken a bite of food and stopped to say, “Oh my god, that’s good.” But when I took a bite of the risotto, that’s exactly what I did. The price of the meal was comparable to other high end restaurants like Eddie V’s and Capital Grill, but since they don’t accept tips, it actually came out to be much less expensive. All in all, a wonderful experience and I’d highly recommend it to anyone.

Food With Passion

Canary is a gem. The food is fantastic and the chef who is also the owner puts his heart and soul into each dish. It is very small and you feel like he is cooking just for you. The things I tried were out of the ordinary with sophisticated flavors. The grapefruit, goat cheese salad is a must, as well as the beef with pomegranates. My friend had the steak and said it was outstanding.
