Worth the wait

By Swimmy128 |

I am not a fan of waiting in a line for an hour for food , but this place was worth it. They had a band playing which made the wait go by quickly. The food and sauces were all really good. We got the sandwiches and there was a lot of meat in them. The staff working by the tables were super friendly . Really added to the experience.

The search is over...

Read about this place and had to see if review was true or not. Grand Ole BBQ y Asado did not disappoint!!!! Very casual - picnic tables and BYOB. There is a liquor store across the street so you can either purchase there or bring your own. It definitely makes waiting in line a little more fun! The portions are healthy and the brisket was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Be sure to have an alternative as they sell until it sells out. Surprisingly the turkey was also very tasty - the reviewer mentioned that so I had to try it. I plan on going back to try all of the items on the menu but I have a feeling that everything is DELICIOUS. Helpful tip: there is an dessert shop on the same lot (not sure if it is related or not as it had a separate name) that serves delicious ice cream puffs, ice cream between a donut, cookie or brownie. There are topping choices and a lot of flavors so save room! Highly recommend if you want simple, delicious BBQ. Be sure to check their Facebook and website to get real-time status on when and what they sell out of items or all items.

Heavily Peppered and Smoked BBQ

By Laurence E |

West Texas charm with open picnic table seating. Come for the meat which is sold by the sandwich or by the pound. The meat is heavily peppered before cooking which blends a black pepper bite into the smoked meat yielding a different taste and after-taste compared with most BBQ.

Best BBQ I have had in a while

I came here the other day and it was amazing. Very simple and informal but does an amazing pulled pork and BBQ.

Great San Diego BBQ

By R S |

I'm a big time smoker of beef, ribs, fish and poultry. We recently went to G O BBQ y Asado and were very impressed. The ambiance is about as much of a back yard BBQ setting one could ever want. Picnic tables and smell of the meats smoking. They only sell freshly smoked meats and they sell out a couple times a day. We sampled several items, the Brisket, Lamb Shoulder with their own Chimichurri sauce, Tri-tip, Turkey and a Hot link and had some Cole Slaw and Potato salad. The beauty is you can buy a sandwich if you prefer or a la carte in increments of a lb. We bought 1/2 lb. of brisket and it was moist, smoky and tender and came with some soft white bread slices. We split a Tri-tip sandwich with coleslaw on a roll and the meat melted in your mouth. We bought some a la Carte turkey that was moist and had a peppery seasoning on it which high-lighted it perfect. Everything we tried along with the potato salad, the sauces and condiments were spot on perfect. We even brought in a couple of cold beers to round it out and enjoyed a nice family luncheon. I will definitely be back, the problem is I may go too often for it's that good. Born and raised in San Diego and I have to say this is my favorite BBQ joint now. The staff is super friendly and will go out of their way to ensure you have a good time and get you more of what you may need. Check it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Love it and I don't eat beef!

By SDSpartan |

Have tried to come here many times but have always been too late and they have been sold out - so keep that in mind! Finally Saturday came 30 minutes before opening and got in and got food. The BEST BEST BEST smoked/grilled turkey I have EVER had. Even my beef eating hubby couldn't stop eating it. It was great. Loved the sides - potato salad and slaw (spicy) were excellent. The people/service were awesome. Friendly, helpful and welcoming to our pup. Going to try the sunday BBQ for the salmon - hopefully soon.

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!

By Vladimir G |

I'm not kidding - this place is Amazing! With capital 'A'! Tried pulled pork, brisket and beef ribs - everything was great. There's a huge line, so come early. They will provide free beer, so waiting in line is not too boring. After finishing our meal we decided to go to the line again to get more :)

Maybe I found it

By bbahama |

Being a BBQ addict and traveled to TX, TN,SC, KC, & OK too find the “goods” , I might have found it. Not in an obvious location and at 1:15 just 1&1/4 hours after opening they were out of 2/3 of their meat choices. I was unhappy for me but I guess happy for them The ribs and pulled pork were great and their mild and hot BBQ sauces were exceptional So go and try it out. Just go after I’ve been there.

Best BBQ in San Diego

By Robkeepsitreal |

Smoked Texas BBQ in San Diego. As a native Texan, now living in San Diego, I have longed for Texas style BBQ without having to fly back to Texas. I found it! This place offers the best BBQ, smoked to perfection. Yes, the lines can be long and yes, they will run out of selected meats but it's worth the wait. I have eaten hear many times and I have learned, arrive early to get choice meats. I usually arrive 30-40 minutes before opening. They allow you to bring your own beverage (B.Y.O.B.). Having a couple of beers while waiting in line w/ friends helps pass the time. The brisket and beef rib bone are my favorite. The meat is sold by the pound and can get pricey, but work the cost. The side dishes, bean, coleslaw, and potato salad are all very good. I highly recommend this place...see you in line.

Great lamb shoulder

By gzau |

We got to Grand Ole BBQ early and there was already a line waiting for them to open. The line moved quickly. We ordered several item but the best one was the lamb shoulder. They also have an interesting selection of different style BBQ sauce. I heard their brisket is famous but its only for dinner....

Yeah, this is the place you've been looking for!

By Bret R |

If you love pure BBQ delight, this is the place! Simply delicious and everything you could want in BBQ. We went on a Saturday, just after they opened and the line was not too long, the food was absolutely the best BBQ I have found yet. Tender, juicy, smokey and satisfying - and I am very picky when it comes to BBQ so believe me, this place has the best you will find, but get there early, they do sell out fast!

Best Texas Style BBQ in San Diego!

By Pauline Steele |

Best Texas-style BBQ in San Diego! I’ve tried other bbq places around here and GOBYA is by far my favorite. Service/Ambiance: Our party of 4 went at 5pm on a Wednesday and there was no line to order at all, though I hear this place gets jam-packed over the weekends. Once you enter, you order at the cashier in the back corner and they call when your order is ready. It was my first time here and the lady up front was patient and helpful with my questions, and offered food/size suggestions. Food came out very quickly. Plenty of benches outside that could seat 6 to 8 people, maybe even 10 in some tables. The “indoor” section has tables, benches, booths, and seats at the bar. The whole place gives you a laid-back, barbecue with friends kind of ambiance. Parking: Street parking only but our party got lucky with multiple spots open close by. Food: Price listed is per pound for all meats and you can opt to make it a sandwich. There’s a kids menu, bar food options, and even vegan options. You can choose from different sauces ranging from sweet to spicy (though the spicy wasn’t really that spicy for me but still had good flavor). My husband and I shared this order and it was the perfect amount for us. -1/2 lb brisket ($15.50): MUST GET. They serve half fatty and half lean and it’s the perfect amount of each. Sooo tender and juicy! -1/4 lb turkey ($7.75): surprisingly very good! Thin cuts of turkey served with lots of flavor. -3/4 lb beef rib ($25.50): fall-off-the-bone good. We were lucky that there were still some left for us to order! -1/4 lb tri tip ($8): a little chewier, it was just okay for me but my husband liked the flavor. Served with their chimichurri sauce. -Green beans: I asked for recs for popular sides and it was between this and Mac and Cheese. These were just ehhh for me, I would get Mac and cheese next time. Overall, I’m so glad we finally found a good Texas-style barbecue joint here in San Diego! There were other things offered that I would love to try next time. I’d also want to try out their happy hour from 3pm-5pm during the weekdays.

Texas style BBQ in San Diego

By kate w |

Best BBQ I've found in Southern California. We ordered a whole smoked chicken, pulled pork sandwich and brisket sandwich. The meat was cooked to perfection. Don't miss the polenta and spicy coleslaw sides (I'm still thinking about that spicy slaw). This is REAL BBQ, smoker on site and everything. In true TX style, they do sell out, so get there early and be prepared to wait in line. Your wait will be rewarded when you get to watch the pit master slice the meat and prep your order. Can't wait to go back and eat my way through the entire menu.

Delicious BBQ

By TULIPS4ME2 |

What a great place. The workers were so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. It had a great atmosphere. Nothing better than eating BBQ on the patio with a nice breeze.

I've certainly had better BBQ when travelling the USA.

By Roberts69 |

I do like BBQ and so headed to 'Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado' for dinner when in San Diego for a couple of nights... I had Brisket, Beef Rib and Pork Ribs, with Slaw and Potato Salad as sides, with a Diet Coke. The Brisket was very nice but the Ribs were only just average compared to other BBQ I've had in the USA. Cost wasn't cheap either with my meal coming in at $70. All in all it was okay, but not worth the money and I'd not rush back.

"Anticipation Is Getting Me Down".........

By George Andrus |

OK, what's the deal? I finally find this Fantastic BBQ only blocks from my house, and like the Q Junkie I am, I get hooked on everything on the menu. For the last 18 months I go at least once a week for my Q fix. Then one day the Pig Pushermen are gone, vanished, leaving a lot filled with empty tables & benches where I use to sit stuffing my face on the Best Pulled Pork & Tri-Tip sandwiches in San Diego, The big BBQ smokers now sit cold & lifeless...The Heat is gone and I'm so sad & confused. Where have the Q Boys gone?...What done happened? There's a rumor now floating in the air where there used to be the punget smell of BBQ that Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado has closed only temporarily to remodel & expand. OK, that's all well & good, but in the past 4+ months I've seen no movement...no worker Bee's swarming around to make things new & better. The " Anticipation Is Getting Me Down"... as Carly Simon once sang. Yo, Q Boys!....What's the DealeO?? Stop jerkin my heart & taste buds around and get your pig butts back to 30th Street....We hardly knew Ye before you left us Porkless. Just gimme some kind of sign....something we can hang on too...Hope for the future... Pleeeze!

Amazing BBQ

By Ron V |

First off, this a place that is not intended for "Bird Eaters", come with an appetite! The brisket is awesome! The Argentine Sausage is pretty amazing as well. This is a communal seating place, so be ready to share a table with a friend. Also, this is a BYOB establishment, beer and wine is okay. Also, be ready to stand in line, it is worth the wait! First come first served, they serve until they sell out and they do sell out! Cheers!

Excellent Meat; Mediocre Sides

By AndoverDan |

The steak was excellent and very tasty. The sides we had - beans, potato salad, and spicy slaw - were very mediocre. They have picnic tables outside, and are able to fill orders very quickly. It was cold the night we were there, so we did take out rather than sit outside.

Worth the wait

By Cathy F |

If you like meat this is the place for you. While we waited in line we watched one item after another sell out Lucky for us our choices were still available. The brisket and pulled pork were wonderful. Tri tip and turkey just as good. We had no left overs and we were tempted to order some meat to go. You must get there early because they sell out fast. Fun atmosphere and dog friendly

Best Brisket in San Diego

By chefjeff60 |

My friend took me here was telling me how great the brisket was. He was not kidding the brisket is amazing. I also tried the beef short rib and a hot link. The hot link was very good and the short rib was cooked to perfection just to much pepper for me on the beef short rib but if you like pepper it would be fantastic. The potato salad was delicious and lots of choices for beverage if you want a beer it's bring your own. I give the BBQ here to big thumbs up very very good.

North Park Must

What a great addition to this neighborhood. Always a line but moves pretty fast and I have never had anything bad. TriTip doesn't last long...that should tell you something.

Best pulled pork and brisket in San Diego

By George N |

Ordered a 1/2 pound each of pulled pork and brisket (only available after 6 pm) and it was melt in your mouth delicious. Get there early because a line forms and if they sell out, too bad.

Great BBQ

By S L |

This place was the best BBQ I have had in San Diego so far. The food was great, bringing in your own beer was fun, and the atmosphere with the live band made it an even better experience. The only reason I give this place a 4 is because I believe there should be people telling you what food is running out before it is completely gone. We made a long line and where not able to try the ribs which were the reason why I went there in the first place. The brisket and pulled pork were outstanding.

Fantastic BBQ

By MalgoLi |

During our 4 days in San Diego we ate here twice - it was the best BBQ I've ever had. The brisket was great, so was the pulled porked, the ribs, turkey, the sandwiches, sides and pickles. You can order a sandwich or just meat, without any bread. The sauces and amazing pickles are complimentary. You have to wait in line to order the food, but it's totally worth it! The earlier to come, the better, as the food sells out really fast. I loved the atmosphere as well!

So Good!

By MamaThornSt |

Well worth the wait in line! Get there early as some choices are sold out and since all choices are delicious, you'll want to have your pick. Dining is at outside communal tables or for take out. They do not serve alcohol but you can take your meal to Thorn Street Brewery around the corner and buy your own beer. My favorite is the brisket. The lamb is tasty but the short ribs had too much pepper for my taste. Two kinds of BBQ sauce, marinated onions, jalapeños and pickles are available on the condiment table. A small collection of sides included potato salad, which I enjoyed. A very relaxed atmosphere with a neighborhood feel, this place is great for gathering families, friends, couples or going solo.

Unbelievable Barbeque!

By Jay P |

We went on a Sunday, which is Argentina day. The place is pretty informal: picnic tables on concrete surrounded by a chain-link fence. Didn’t look very special until I smelled the air – what a wonderful smoked meat smell! I was hooked after the first breath. We got there a little before noon, when it opens, and found a line about 100 people already formed. The sign said they close when they sell-out of food so I got a little nervous but we were good. They started cutting things off the menu shortly after we ordered so come early. We ordered the tri-tip sandwiches, one salmon, one chorizo, one lamb shoulder and sides of potato salad and a side of beans. Way too much food for 4 people but we wanted to try everything. You have a choice of spicy BBQ sauce or sweet BBQ sauce and/or chimichurri. Let me cut to the chase: everything was GREAT! How can everything be so good? My favorite was the tri-tip sandwich and the salmon (I was surprised how good it was) but the lamb was great as was everything else. Both the BBQ sauces were great but I liked the spicy a little better. Let it drip on the salmon and beans and fingers so that you can lick it off. End of the day, if you remotely like BBQ, this is a must visit! We took home the left-overs and it tasted as good the second day as the first! They don’t sell alcohol but there is a liquor store across the street and a micro-brewery around the corner where you can buy growlers, if that is your thing. Also, next door is an ice cream place in case you need dessert or you want sparking water for dinner.

Get There Early!

By Brian F |

This place is near where my son lives and we were glad that he suggested it. It is all outdoors and you start out by standing in line to place your meat order and then move to the next window to order sides and beverages and to pay. While waiting in line to order, you study their hand written menu of the day and decide what you want to order. At least until one of the employees comes out with a marker and crosses off something that they just ran out of. In our case, we were next in line to order and the brisket was the main meat that we were ordering until, you guessed it, it was removed from the board. Thus my title, "Get There Early!". We modified our order to get more ribs and pulled porked and everyone enjoyed it all. Next time, I am getting there in time to try the brisket.

Almost Texas Worthy

By Dennis S |

While talking with a friend over lunch at UTC, going over our recent trip to Austin and the great BBQ that we always have when there. The gentleman sitting next to me apologized as he interrupted and said there are a couple great places here in San Diego that rival Texas BBQ. I asked him how he could evaluate what good BBQ is and, he said he is a BBQ contest judge, going all over the states judging BBQ contests. With two new barbecue places to try, I selected Grand Ole BBQ y Asado as a the place to try first. I went on July 4, and was pleasantly surprised to see their Texas style broilers out front where the briskets, ribs, sausages, and other meats are cooked. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a nice long line waiting to order. Several BBQ joints in Texas close when they sell out of their food, as does the Grand Ole BBQ, a good sign my opinion. I ordered the chopped brisket sandwich and a sausage, and my wife ordered a quarter pound of sliced brisket with three pork ribs. Our sides were there regular coleslaw and Peruvian white beans. We enjoyed all of our items with the exception that the sliced brisket was a little dry and without much flavor. Another great thing about this place, is that you can bring your own beer and drinks onto their patio to have with your BBQ. As there is one other BBQ place we will be trying (name being withheld until I can compare them), I will go back to this one as I did enjoy the food and atmosphere as it reminded me a lot of Texas barbecue.

Unique Facility & Good Q

By Rich807 |

Brisket was very top-notch. Tri-tip was decent. Mac & Cheese was good as were the ranch beans. Pulled pork was ok. Sweet bbq sauce was excellent with the brisket. Carolina sauces we thought were way too vinegar for what we’re used to in that style. Fast & friendly service. Dog-friendly patio is nice. Set in a tight by Neighborhood I’d imagine parking is a challenge at night & on weekends. Our visit was at lunch on a weekday, able to find residential parking nearby.

Straight up Texas BBQ

By MrsMglobaltraveler |

This is one of those places that started as a one stop shop and became the next big thing. If they stay at their current place I won't be shocked once the line goes down the block. Get here before it does, it's amazing! Brisket is not like your Jewish grandmother from New York made.... And for those that like me have a Jewish grandmother know, it can be a bit tough at the end of the day. This brisket is the Texas best, smokey and falling apart. Just good. It's very casual here and you sit where you sit and there's no table service. Best In town.

Best Bbq in San Diego

By Stephen B |

This family style BBQ "joint" has outstanding BBQ, especially for San Diego. I lived in Memphis and grew up in Texas, so I know good BBQ. They're open from 12 til. Till they run out of food. There's no real restaurant, just picnick tables with family style seating. The menu is handwritten on a big roll of paper. Everything I've had is great but l loved the beef ribs. Just seasoned with salt and pepper with chimichurri sauce available. On sundays they have an Argentina menu and no pork ribs.

Unique and Fun Night!

By Renee A |

Fun night with great food. As other reviews state get there early! They open at 6 and you can purchase whatever food they cooked that day till it runs out- which is quickly. We had to stand in line for about 30 minutes but worth every minute! I had the brisket sandwich that melted in my mouth as I ate it. We ordered outside at the window and watched them chop it up and make the sandwich. Then we went next door to a beer brewery- you could take food inside and ate there while playing trivia. Food was delicious and trivia was fun- a great night!

Fabulous Pulled Pork

By weewalker |

Come casual and prepare to dig in to some great food. You can smell the BBQ on the days they are open--Wed-Saturday 12 noon to sell out; Dinner 6pm to sell out; and on Sundays they only serve lunch. I had the pulled pork, the Peruvian white beans and the coleslaw. You can buy by the pound or buy sandwiches. There were 3 of us so we bought a pound and split everything. Smoked lamb, hot links, ribs and other Central Texas type stuff. Enjoy. I did

Amazing BBQ

By BarryChocolate |

The food was tremendous. We had a huge selection of meats and they were all amazing. My personal favourite was the brisket. They also had a wide selections of beers available. Would recommend and will definitely be back.

Best BBQ ever!

By iluvred |

We stumbled across Grand Ole bbq by accident and then looked it up on Facebook and Trip Advisor and saw the great reviews. The reviews were spot on! The brisket, pulled pork and turkey were incredibly good. The sides were plentiful and really good (potato salad and cole slaw). We were greeted by Tod who was so nice and helpful, and bar service was provided by Christian who was fun and covered the whole place. The atmosphere is casual and all seating was open air although some was covered. We went early and got in line to wait for it to open. When the food is gone, it’s gone.

Long lines runs out quickly

By lindadattilo |

I am not a fan of standing in line only to reach the counter and told they just ran out of turkey. The place had only been open for 45 minutes. Not the best first impression. However base on the lines and the reviews I’m willing to give this place another try. Hopefully I don’t leave hungry

TEXAS SMOKED MEAT STYLE

By Ron M |

To newcomers: They serve Texas style BBQ Smoked Meat. This is not Tennessee or St Luis BBQ. The smoking of the meat on Texas is an artform. It is delicious just the way it is. It does not come smothered with BBQ sauce. They do have sauce on the side of you must but, to me, it's like going to a nice steak house and putting A1 sauce on the meat. Just don't do it is my advice. Enjoy the meat. Also, you have the option of juicy or lean. Many people these days don't enjoy the fat, but I do, so I always order extra juicy please!

San Diego's Best- finally!

By pmbowers |

This is the real deal- I've waited for years to have a place like this in San Diego. Real smoke, real flavor, not mop and glop and grill like Phil's. Don't skip the lamp and the turkey, either. Might want to follow them on Twitter- they DO sell out and the DON't serve re-heats or leftovers.

Excellent Central Texas BBQ

By Birdwatcher_jpm |

Real central Texas BBQ, expect lines during peak hours and potential sell out of items which are made in the smokers out front. Have had the ribs which were extremely tender and flavorful, a nice dry rubbed tri tip and the lamb shoulder. The menu is written on brown paper and changes daily. Your meal is served with white bread and in a cafeteria tray in true Texas style. Sandwiches usually available if ordering the pound intimidates you.
