Without a Doubt

By temi43 |

I wanted to try this place for a long time, but it seemed really busy every time I passed by. All the reviews said they were worth the wait, but I had my doubts. Last week I finally bit the bullet and went in. "We'll see," I thought to myself as I entered our name at the bottom of the waiting list and took a seat in the cramped entry. After about twenty minutes they called us up and showed us to a table. The place had a very funky "Portland" ambiance. It was crowded and lively, but not so loud I had to shout at my husband across the table. The service was no nonsense and excellent. The food was delicious. We shared a half order of french toast and the chicken fried steak. Wow. After I took the first bite of french toast, I no longer wanted to share. But I still wanted his chicken fried steak...choices, choices. I controlled my greed and got to try the steak too. It was wonderful. It's kind of weird. When I think of all of the components that come together for a great dining experience, I wouldn't have thought this place could pull it off. But they really did. Even with all the great reviews puffing up my expectations, they far exceeded them. They do simple food in a pleasant atmosphere. And they do it, very, very well. I am a believer now. They are worth the wait.

This. Is. Breakfast.

Not everyday, but now and then, nothing satisfies like a nearly over-the-top breakfast. Gravy is where you want to go on those days. Yes, portions are, uh, generous. And like the name suggests there is gravy (if you like) available for everything. But unlike many "big breakfast" places Gravy keeps things light and flavorful. Ginormous omelettes and scrambles arrive without any fry oil pooling on the plate, the french toast is thick, but fluffy. My favorite remains "The Dalise" omelette, an out-of-body experience for those who seek a meaty breakfast. Sit at the counter and be amazed by the two hardest-working guys in Portland producing plate after plate of spectacular food. Expect a long wait on most days and while they are kid-friendly they're really not set up for large groups.

Very good food. Super fast. OK prices.

By TankerT |

Went for breakfast shortly after opening on a weekday. The food was very good. We needed to be somewhere a while later, so I was a little worried about the speed. I didn't mention this to the server though. Needless to say, I should not have been concerned. The food was out very fast. The quality was quite high. The prices were a little high as well, but not terrible. The portions were very large, so that is likely part of the cost component. The only actual complaint I would have is that my chair was wobbly. (You know... when one leg is longer than the other...) I would come here again.

Enjoyable experience

By Randall L |

This was our first time at this restaurant and I would highly recommend. The wife and I went their on a Thursday morning around 9am and we're seeted right away. I had the biscuits and sausage gravy and the wife had ham and eggs. The food, service and atmosphere were all great.

Love at first bite

By Gabigabs |

We were on a search for brunch place while travelling through Portland. Gravy was on our way and it came with good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We could not like it more. We were greeted with a smile even though we arrived just half an hour before their closing time. Both the coffee and hot chocolate warmed us up, I have to say I really enjoyed the hot chocolate. Our meals were delicious and satisfied our hunger. I was very pleasantly surprised by the portions. I ordered half french toast and when the plate arrived, I first thought they made a mistake and brought the full size. I was assured it was indeed a half portion. It was delicious. One of the best french breads I had in a while.

Excellent eatery

By cumbria_lake |

Good food choices (and we had a vegetarian with us). Bottled beer only. Service was fairly slow when we went as we arrived on a shift change - these things happen but manager should keep an eye out to prevent really long delays.

We went for the gravy, but we came back for the french toast

By Alex M |

My wife, two friends, and I had breakfast at Gravy on a weekend. The meal was so good, we returned the next day. It's a popular place. We arrived close to 10:00 a.m. on our first visit, so we had to wait for our table for 4. On our second visit, we arrived by 8:00 a.m., and were seated immediately. As other reviewers have reported, the portions are enormous. You might want to share. If you're interested in several dishes, I recommend ordering one and selecting as a side your second and/or third choice. That's what we did: we ordered the french toast as a side initially. It was sooooo good, one of us ordered the full portion on our second visit. I cannot say enough about the french toast. It is the BEST french toast we've all had. I don't know what they soak their bread in, but it is ambrosia. This is a must have. So too the gravy. But order the gravy on the side, so you can regulate the amount you wish to slather on anything. Other items I'd recommend: eggs, hash browns, the corned beef hash and of course the biscuits. Final recommendation: go again. If I ever return to Portland in the future, I will make my way back to Gravy.

Breakfast!

By Goldenpenny89 |

When you're in the US you have to behave like the Americans. So we tried a typical American breakfast. We had scrambled eggs with toasted English muffins and hash browns. And an omelette with roasted potatoes. All delicious and we'll done. Fast and nice waitress. Cozy place. Beware of the size of dishes...they are huge!!!

Delicious! I ate too much.

By shellysroadtrip |

Bustling eatery in Portland, seemed like a local go-to spot. Food was absolutely delish, and served in large portions. Vegetarian friendly- my veg friend and I had no trouble finding options, and had a difficult time deciding, as they all sounded great. Definitely recommend.

major delicious grub

By Dudewith4shorties |

Best breakfast I've had in Portland. Get the everything (forgot what it's called) omelet with the kale side (so you can feel better about eating thousands of calories). My go to place to gain additional poundage.

Three of us had a very nice breakfast yesterday (Saturday)

By JustBobL |

Not fancy but delicious filling breakfasts. One of the hundreds of eateries in old parts of any city, but well worth the trip. The meals were delicious and presented nicely in a reasonable amount of time. The staff was friendly; the wait was short (a couple of minutes), and the menu was quite extensive and included many healthy items, vegan fare, and food for us less sophisticated. The biscuits are amazing, and the hashbrowns were beautiful and plentiful. Three perfect sunnyside up eggs.

Delicious fresh food and warm atmosphere

By ZZenner |

Bring your appetite as the portions here are generous. I tried the Greco scramble and it was enough food for two easily. We got there on a week day early on and there was no wait. I imagine it fills up fast as people wake up as there was a wait list paper on the front table. We were seated right away and got drinks shortly after. Service was great and friendly. Vibe was cool and comfortable. Parking was easily found within a block. Menu includes a variety of breakfast options. Husband enjoyed the biscuits and gravy and loved the hot chocolate.

Great breakfast

Really enjoyed the coffee and the breakfast. Shared with a friend AND took some home. Service was good, would recommend.

Quality & Quantity

By martinibill7777 |

This very friendly locals restaurant serves high quality breakfast and huge quantity. The homemade corned beed hash is fine. Friendly, upbeat servers and Manager.

Amazing breakfast sandwich

By Susan M. B |

This place was cozy, the breakfast bacon, egg & cheese (with fakin bacon) was delicious!! , and the service was friendly and laid back.

Heaven

By Sarah R |

There is no better place on a Sunday morning for breakfast. The French toast is to die for. It is so wonderful that I cannot eat French toast anywhere else without comparing it to Gravy’s. They have spoiled me for life.

Breakfast meal to last you all day; salads special too

By jbsixtyfive |

This is a comfortable friendly restaurant with great filling breakfast choices along with filling and tasty salads. I recently had a beet salad that was delicious, fresh, and just enough dressing. i sat at the bar so i could see everything going on in the kitchen. Good prompt and friendly service.

Great breakfast selection and huge portions

By Ceci T |

Very good vibes in this friendly neighborhood restaurant. Good food and huge portions. Country friend steak was delicious. Omelette was a bit too stuffed. Friendly staff.

Breakfast

By Alicia S |

I know it sounds crazy but best omelette!!!!!! You can customize your own, I had tomatoes, cheddar, jalapeno and bacon. They do not skimp, all items were fresh and superior quality. Cute place, bit of a wait but it was a beautiful day out. When in Portland and you want eggs...GO HERE!!!!!

Brunch at its best!!

By RitaBrandley |

this was amazing! The pancakes with fresh berries, great bacon and hash browns was nothing short of amazing! Great, funky atmosphere that was really fun on the wonderful and fun Mississippi Street in cool Portland! Thanks!

This one is a "have to"when in Portland.

By Michelle C |

Be prepared for a long wait, BUT it is absolutely worth evey minute. The food is prepared quickly and perfect. Staff is laid back and friendly but efficient. Everything we tryed was awesome. There are vegan options, and portions were large. But the biscuits and gravy was our favorite and phenomenal, we tried the hearty veggie gravy and it was delicious.

Outstanding Breakfast

By Sue U |

Had breakfast here on two occasions while visiting Portland. Service was phenomenal, food was delicious & plentiful, and environment was extremely pleasant. A must do if you are in Portland.

Worth the wait

By JustMeToo2011 |

If you don’t get there early, you will wait in the typical Portland restaurant line but it’s all part of the experience. The corned beef hash was excellent and I’d be hard pressed not to get it again. The omelette is huge and excellent as well. Pancakes were fluffy but by the looks of the French toast, I’d probably get that as a side next time. Plenty of options and everything was large portions and looked wonderful. Well worth the wait.

Gravy...."It's Gravy, Baby"

By Khristi L |

Gravy...It's Gravy Baby There are two locations. One off of Sandy Blvd in the SE Portland area, and the 2nd is the place that I visit is off of Mississippi Avenue in the NE area. I haven't been to the SE location because I can walk out my front door and walk a couple blocks to this magical place. It's centered in between a bar and locally owned bodega and could be easy to miss because the color scheme is all one color = camouflage. But on the weekends you would never miss Gravy. They have a line out the door for hours and I think you'd get an inkling on where the place to be is. Gravy is open 7 days a week from 7:30am-3pm serving up their savory, delightful breakfast and lunch bites. Which are not "bites' because unless you have an appetite of 20 hungry men, you'll be taking food home. Assuming you like leftovers, like me. More bang for your buck ;) One true appeal of Gravy is there is nothing fancy at all. It's a very straight forward diner, tables 2-4 tops mainly, chairs, a small 5-person bar top, open kitchen window. Who doesn't love to watch a cook? This really isn't a place for large parties. I'm sure they could put tables together to accommodate I just wouldn't recommend it. I will say that Gravy has hands down perfected the art of breakfast and lunch. They are experts IMO. They have zero need to branch out into dinner what-so-ever. When I know I'm going to Gravy, I literally feel happy. You wouldn't normally describe me as a b-fast person , because I'm not. I'm a brunch/lunch individual that is extremely dinner focused. LOL With that being said though, the biscuits and gravy are the most phenomenal components they offer on their menu. All you need is one delectable, fluffy biscuit topped in a mound of smooth, creamy, sausage gravy. It's not too spicy which depends on the sausage you use and can create heartburn. I'ts not gritty which some sauces become due to the amount of flour added to the roux. It's still filling and satisfying without that weighed down, get me a wheelchair out of here effect. One biscuit ($5.75) Two biscuits ($10.75). I've also had amazing omelette's. The traditional options or they will totally modify or allow you to customize. Who lets you do that anymore? Average price ($13) This includes a side of fruit, greens, hash browns or potatoes. My favorite sandwich is what I created. Grilled cheese on rye bread, I only prefer white melty cheeses such as provolone, add tomato, bacon and avocado. This is money honey. With all of the add-ons = ($16). This includes salad, braised kale or homemade soup. This menu has something for everyone. It offers soup and salad options and a ton of sides. Their price range ($5.75-$16). Again, you'll most likely get two meals out of your dish of choice. The service is sublime. Servers smile, water glasses stay full, timing is impeccable and the BOH kills it!! Check out GRAVY, it's a happy place!!

Huge portions!

By Crystal R |

We each had biscuits and gravy. The sausage for the gravy is made in-house. It tasted like Italian sausage which made the gravy a little sweet for my taste. The biscuits were very good. Portland is a food lover's paradise so I think this place will fit in nicely!

Great breakfast

By tleeEvans |

Stop for breakfast with family. Was around 9:15 so the wait was not too long but sound 10:30 when we left the line was much longer. Very friendly staff and breakfast menu selection was very good. I got the one egg with side of fruit. Had them do just egg whites and when the plate came the portion looked more like 2 or 3 egg whites. They were excellent as not to dry or over cooked. My husband got more of the traditional type of breakfast with two eggs and biscuits with gravy. He loved the gravy and stated biscuits were excellent. Our son got eggs but with hash browns His was equally good and all the portions were large. If in the area this is a must for breakfast as they are vary accommodating when asking for special requests.

First meal in Portland!

By Scott D |

This place is amazing. The staff is super friendly and laid back. The atmosphere is very hipster meets country. The food was amazing. The portions are so big we shared and still had left overs! Great place for breakfast or brunch! Try their omelets. With sausage gravy to die for!

Breakfast off of Mississippi

By Carolann F |

Arrived at or about 7:30 a.m., Saturday morning and the place was busy. Greeted right after entering and was seated. Food was great for me, but Shaun did not like the fact that they brought out premeasured syrup for his pancakes.

Yummy Biscuits and Gravy!!

By Tracy M |

Great food, I loved my biscuits and gravy. Big portions. Hubby had corned beef hash that was super yummy. Definitely will return again!!

Loved the food, experience was not optimal

By Barney K |

Went for breakfast and had to wait nearly an hour. That is understandable because the food was very good. My wife and I both had leftovers as the portions were generous. The quality of the food seemed top notch. Given the long lines of people we really felt rushed by the staff and it was uncomfortable having all the people waiting for you to finish.

Hearty, tasty breakfast

By oenotraveler1 |

When you feel like a hearty and delicious breakfast head out to Gravy. The biscuits and gravy are very good, one is plenty to share with your dining mate. If you are a fan of corned beef hash give theirs a try - large bits of corned beef. Pancakes and omelets are also good. It's situated along a great street in Portland so a stroll after your meal is easy to manage.

Good food, massive portions

By hazardnc |

We had brunch at Gravy during our Thanksgiving trip to PDX. My husband had the corned beef hash, which he loved. My son had a custom omelet and I had the bacato omelet. Everything on the menu looked good and I noticed a number of folks ordered their French toast (which looked amazing). We all enjoyed our food. I do wish they cooked the bacon was crisper, but it was a generous side dish. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, but I'd say it was worth it

Best breakfast of our vacation!

By SantaMonicaTraveler |

We did a summer road trip through California, Oregon and Washington. This was the BEST breakfast of our trip. I had a scramble with hash browns. The scramble was super yummy and fresh tasting. Hash browns were cooked perfectly with a large serving. I was with my teenage boys and none of us were able to clean our plates. So either be very hungry or consider sharing something. Overall 5 stars for breakfast. It get busy, so get there early. We also enjoyed the neighborhood -- reminded us of Haight St. or Abbot Kinney.

Best Biscuits and Gravy in Portland

By jcseabright |

Gravy serves straightforward, good breakfast food for a reasonable price. Their biscuits and gravy are to die for. Friendly staff and nice environment. The wait can be long so make sure to get there early, especially if you have a large party.

Great food, huge portions.

By Matt G |

I have been to Gravy a few times for breakfast, and it has always been a real treat. The servers are friendly, and the food is awesome. My only *minor* complain is that I prefer my chicken fried steak to be pounded thin, rather than the "thick cut" that is offered here. Many people enjoy it, so I think this is a matter of opinion. Even though the cut wasn't my favorite, the food was delicious, and I have never been let down by the food here. Keep in mind there WILL be at least 30 minutes of wait time if you come between the hours of 9 AM and 12 PM on the weekends. While I wait, I usually stroll the neighborhood (unless it is POURING) and grab a cup of coffee at a nearby shop. Also, please note that the parking on Mississippi is AWFUL. You will likely be parking on the streets surrounding Mississippi unless you get lucky.

Gem of a find!

By MadlyGlobal |

Cute and quirky little place on N Mississippi Ave, an awesome little street. Great cafe with great service and super tasty food. 4 of us went for lunch and wasnt disappointed! Service was super friendly and handy, food was tasty and fast. Great location!

Great Corned-Beef Hash!

By Dane S |

We've been to Gravy twice now, and the food there continues to impress. The corned-beef hash is outstanding, as are the biscuits and gravy (a personal favorite of mine). Both the sausage gravy and veggie gravy are noteworthy. Great eggs and specialty drinks too. The environment is comfortable and friendly, although the wait can be long depending on what time you visit. It seems like this place is a popular not-so-secret stop among locals and tourists alike.

What a gem!

By Robert C |

Outstanding breakfast. Expect a wait, regardless of the time or day. Biscuits & gravy appears to be a favorite. I didn't try it, but I was about the only one that didn't. I had an egg meal prepared perfect. Especially the hash browns. A generous portion, crispy outside and steaming inside. I dare say, one of the hash browns I've ever had. Service was fast and friendly.

All the way dumb

By Ryan Reeves |

Spent the day in the bathroom from obvious food poisoning as a result of eating at this filthy place… If you’re looking for an overpriced hurry up to wait experience (hour plus no matter what) then this place is for you… The service was also par for the course as grunge/hipster minimum wage losers look down their noses at normal folks just looking to dine and go. I’d rather eat a gravel sandwich than endure that s-show again. Keep Portland dumb! ;-)

Good Breakfast

By ALRFurLife |

A local recommended this breakfast restaurant to us. We went on the weekend so there was a bit of a wait but it was not a very long wait. During the wait for a table they have a coffee station available so you can have your morning coffee. I have never seen that before and for me that was something really impressive. We both had biscuits in gravy. I felt it was the best choice since it is named gravy after all. We also shared order hash browns. The hash browns were good but were served with what seemed to be a home made style ketchup on the side that I didn't dig at all. I would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends or family that traveled into this area.

Bazinga! Now that was a FULL Breakfast!

By km24800 |

Had a business meeting here, at a recommendation of a Portland local. Not too hard to find, but nothing is with a good GPS App! Loved the rustic look, and neighborhood area for this place. I had the corned-beef hash, with hashbrowns and eggs. What a great meal, but I could eat it all! Brought some home, and my son noshed on this for a meal, he loved it! My other son had the B&G (Biscuits & Gravy for the novices), and it was very good... Hard to compare to his mom's awesome recipe, but it was close!!! Thanks for the awesome breakfast, and great service! I will be back!!

Huge yummy breakfast!

By sfdedette |

Gravy is a great spot for a huge breakfast. The service was friendly and accommodating, the food was delicious, and the portions were humongous! There was a short wait on the Wednesday morning we were there, and a good sized line when we left around 11:00. I will be back!

Breakfast on Super Bowl Sunday

By Tim200492 |

Went here with a work colleague this morning. Had an omelette and he had biscuits and gravy. Both were outstanding. Service is good, food is good. Highly recommended......

Wow. Some amazing food.

By ChristinePDX |

Big portions. And yes you may have to wait. But you can grab a cup of coffee and hang out. Great menu that will keep us coming back. Loved the French toast, choc chip banana pancake, omelet, both types of potatoes, and a great cup of coffee. They have veggie cheese and a gluten free pancake option. Wish my stomach was bigger cause we wanted to eat and eat. Yum.

The only meal you'll need that day

By Erin C |

We came here for brunch around 10:30am on a Thursday. There was a very short wait. The challah bread French toast is a must, but a half order is enough. The hearty food helped all the hangovers and we weren't hungry for the rest of the day.

If you want diarrhea, eat here.

By Jane Doe |

I was really excited to come eat at this restaurant. I checked the reviews in advance and had seen long lines here before. So I thought--this place must be really good! However, the second we walked in, there was no one to greet us. I thought-okay not a huge deal. The ambiance of the restaurant was cold and somewhat sterile. Fluorescent lighting is not inviting. We saw a pad of paper where everyone had written their own name and number in their party, so we followed suit. I sat down while we waited and took a look at the pictureless, filthy and overpriced menu. Still- I was hoping the food would be good. So I remained optimistic. The host finally appeared and called our name. He gestured to a table. We had no idea what he had just communicated to us. Instead of showing us where to sit, he just motioned to a table. He motioned to a table again, and we sat down. We ordered coffee, eggs, hash browns, sausage, and a biscuit with gravy. The waiter was nice and the coffee was acceptable. However, when the food came out the presentation was pretty terrible. My hash browns covered up both the scrambled eggs and sausage. The hash browns resembled a round circle--indicating this must have been pre-made or bought somewhere, then defrosted. The eggs reminded me of hotel continental breakfast eggs--liquid eggs poured out of a container. The sausage contained A LOT of anise seeds--and the taste was overwhelming. I ate to fill my belly, but did not enjoy the experience. I noticed the menu indicated a $2 charge for "real maple syrup" and a $2 charge to split a plate. I wanted maple syrup, but held off because paying additional for maple syrup at a breakfast restaurant seemed ridiculous. In addition, the menu boasts vegetarian options. This is nice for those of us who do not eat meat. However, I did not see anything about cage-free, pasture-raised eggs. Several hours after eating, I felt some gastrointestinal upset. Both my husband and I ended up having bouts of diarrhea. Not pleasant. Not worth the $30. This place is overrated, and apparently, can make a person sick. I recommend looking elsewhere.

Big portions, Rich food

By LibDev |

Gravy is a pretty great place to eat if you like big portions and rich food. My daughter had the biscuits and gravy and it was delicious, but I fear her cholesterol will be through the roof next week. I tried to be healthier by ordering the Greek omlett with spinach, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, and cheese. It was good but somehow my stomach suffered for the rest of the day. Guess I'm not used to that much food or proportion.

Excellent breakfast spot

By BendRNA |

Did take out due to The Corona! Good take out program in place at Gravy on Mississippi - I ordered the Chile Verde which was amazing! Also tried the Monte Cristo which was very good and a HUGE portion The Berry Oatmeal is also incredible Can't go wrong at Gravy

Get there early or else!

By Frederick G |

Food is so good, best French toast I have ever tasted... The omelettes are different and taste as well with their hot sauce!!!! If you are in town you must try

Big servings!

By RhodeScholar123 |

We got here early on a Sunday and quickly got a table for our large party. The food is very good, with huge servings. The service was friendly and welcoming, too.

The Hashbrowns!!!!!

By ConstanceAmei |

I went here at breakfast, it was 7:30 and there was a line and the inside of the restaurant was already full of people. I was only a table for one so I sat at the counter, no wait! I got the Country fried steak and hashbrowns. The hashbrowns are to awesome. They are cooked in a cast iron skillet which gives them the most wonderful crunch while the inside is soft yummy potato-y goodness. Portions are gigantic.

Worth the wait

By UWFan53 |

We went to Gravy for brunch on a Saturday. Arrived before 9:00 but still had to wait. It was worth it. The three of us had pancakes, French toast and an egg dish. Pancakes were a short stack and French toast was a half order. Portions are huge. I also had house made sausage as a side. Great flavor with a bit of a kick

Get the Pancakes!

By Matthew E |

I did have to wait about 25 minutes to get in, but I’d say it’s totally worth it as the portions are really large and it’s inexpensive. I had a Fakin Bacon, Spinach Omelette, and the Blueberry Pecan Pancakes. Amazing

GO!

By splancarte45 |

Wonderful place to grab breakfast/lunch! Their portions are huge!! I absolutely loved their biscuits and gravy. It was soooooooo delicious, I must have it again! Be forewarned, the line to get into this place is a bit long, so either go early or not on the weekend. Definitely worth the wait though!

Great Breakfast Place.

By Alex T |

The good - service, vibe, Romeo Omelet, Chili Verde (a bit salty though), biscuit (nice a fluffy), prices were reasonable. Not so Good - The line (20 min wait at 10am on a Tuesday), Coffee (tasted like Boyd's, or some other bad roadhouse blend.) salty Chili Verde.

Best breakfast in a long time

By mel040964 |

So worth the wait - service was spot on, food was amazing. Size portions allowed us to split the meal. LOVED the French toast - YUM and we just got a side order !!

Come hungry

By Corinne B |

This neighborhood place serves hearty breakfasts. Excellent coffee, which we understand is Stumptown Coffee, blended especially for them. I had eggs, their house sausage (excellent, spicy with lots of fennel seed), and a biscuit. Others in our party tried the sausage biscuit (enormous portion--I suggest getting the 1-biscuit version) and pancakes. Be sure to visit the nearby shops. A wonderful neighborhood.

Best restaurant we tried in Portland

By syloh20 |

The coffee was fantastic - I drank it black, which is very unlike me. I had the chili verde, and my partner had the french toast. Both were incredible! It's a fun place to check out, and plenty to see around the neighborhood as well!

Get the Hash

By Dom S |

This is a must stop every time we go to Portland, their corned beef hash is amazing!! I would recommend them to anyone wanting some good food in Portland

Delicious

By Paul Fairbanks |

Great food and huge portions. Three of us each ordered an entree and had enough food for five. Great french toast and the oatmeal brulee was amazing. Need to figure out how to caramelize sugar for my oatmeal at home.

Continues to wow!

By Drake972 |

I have bee here 3 times in the last half year. Each time I come away thinking how great the food is and how welcoming and efficient the staff are. Today we had the challah French toast and the oatmeal with caramelized top, bananas and pecans. With a side of bacon this was just right for our tastes. In the past we have had the omelets and they were equally wonderful. Gravy will become a regular habit. Special appreciation to the staff for excellent service.

Great Breakfast food

By Daniel D |

We went here for a coworkers birthday recently and it was a great experience. First off, prepare to wait when you go here. This was our third attempt trying to go here and finally just waited. It turned out to be well worth the wait. The service was great, which given how busy they are and the typical service you get at other popular places in the area, it was better than most. As far as the food goes. I had a biscuit and gravy, French toast and the oven roasted potatoes. First off everything was delicious. I would give the edge to the French toast being my favorite followed by the gravy. As far as the potatoes, it was good and I also tried the hashbrowns which were equally good, so just go with your personal preference. Next time I go, I may try the fried chicken as it looked particularly amazing. Also of note, the portions are of a great size, so be prepared. Overall, one of the best breakfast/burnch places I have been despite the wait.

Best Breakfast/Brunch food in a cute neighborhood

By AOLucas |

Crowded but worth the wait. Food is delicious and great service! Loved the Chile Verde meal, pork shoulder was so tender, juicy and flavorful. It was served with house potatoes and two perfectly cooked eggs. Divine and inexpensive. Many locals enjoying and it's location is great for walking around. Many local shops in the area.

BEST BREAKFAST IN PORTLAND

By Foodtraveler88 |

The day after Thanksgiving we waited 30 minutes for a table - so worth it! Portions are huge, menu has something for everyone. House made sausage is out of this world. Extremely reasonable prices. Family friendly - service is excellent.

Don't be in a hurry

By Sherry R |

We had a little bit of a wait when we came. In fact I was looking up another nearby place to go when our table was called. The food was great and the price not bad. Portions are more than plenty so you may want to get a to-go container. The sausage gravy was pretty incredible. We will love to come back if we are in town.

I will never find a breakfast this good again, and that’s ok

By Thebeardedwanderlust |

I was in the process of travelling up the west coast to Canada when I decided to stop in Portland a few days to resupply (and get some danner boots) I stayed in the area near here and me and a traveller friend were recommend this establishment. Although we had to sign up and wait to get a seat it wasn’t to long a wait and it was a crisp morning, Once inside the atmosphere was bustling and the food looked amazing, (serious early stage fomo) after much deliberation I settled on the gravy monte cristo, the anticipation was worth it, this thing was a beast, the plate massive 40% was hash brown the rest was the thickest, tastiest French toast, covered in good portions of meats and cheese and dowsed in scrambled eggs (you get to choose your egg style) this with the solid coffee was a slice of all religous higher plains rolled into one. I struggled to finish but had to as no breakfast would top this and hasn’t as now I intermittent fast so don’t really do it anymore. Overall I understand why this place has a waiting list, food incredible, service fantastic. A Portland must do

Yummy brunch and large portions

By leashster |

Gravy is a great place for brunch, but peak times it does get busy so be aware. The waiting area is small, so it can be a bit awkward as you may find yourself with nowhere to wait for a table therefore your like right beside tables that are dining. The food itself was really good and the portions are very large! The service was good as well, we did not receive our drinks that we ordered and right before we were going to say something our server came over and apologized and took care of our drinks on the bill. After that small hiccup our service was great and the waitress was attentive. Overall would recommend this place for brunch!

Great for breakfast.

We chose Gravy because of it's reviews and closeness to our Air B and B and were not disappointed! The food was tasty and the servings were large. We easily shared one order. It was worth the wait on a Sunday morning.

Amazing

I've been traveling around the US these pst few weeks and have had some great breakfasts -- this tops the lot. Amazing food, excellent service and reasonable prices. Well done!

Best Corn Beef Hash EVER!

By Sky G |

We had just finished coming from hiking the Oneonta Gorge. My friends asked us to meet them for breakfast and window shopping. I love walking around Portland and looking at their artsy shops but I was Hangry Hungry=Angry. I said, "We need to find a place to eat like NOW." Right in front of us was Gravy. My friend quickly looked at it's reviews, which were good and we walked in. Oh my oh my oh my. Spanish coffee, corn beef hash, THEIR FRENCH TOAST is to die for! We came back the next morning and ordered the same thing. I can't wait to come back, I crave it!

Should be called WAFFLES!

By wanderingarchitect |

I'm normally not big about waffles- couple bites and I'm done, but these? I DEVOURED their waffles. Oh wow. The bread was thick and soft like a homemade roll and the syrup was sweet and classic maple. There was powdered sugar, but not too much and the syrup was delivered on the side. Get them!! Now, quick note about their gravy: it's not Southern-style. I mean, not that you'd expect it to be, but as a native Virginian, I had no idea there were actually types of gravy. It's orange, spicy and not at all what you likely picture if you're from the southeast. Still good, though, just not normal.

Fantastic Father's Day Brunch with the fam

By jimply |

We had one of the best brunches on Sunday of Father's day. Biscuits and gravy were awesome. I had a breakfast sandwich that was amazing to accompany my Bloody Mary. Everyone was loving their food and the service was fantastic. Great spot in one of Portland's great neighborhoods.

Best breakfast in town!!!

By Steve K |

All we can say is wow!! My wife, son and I had brunch on Sunday. Found a few folks waiting out on the sidewalk at 9:00am but we were seated in less than ten minutes. Servers were right there with the water and menus and we had trouble deciding. Everything sounded so good. While we waited we watched staff bringing out huge plates of french toast, griddles, and omelets that beg description. Coffee and wonderful smoothies were fantastic. Then came our orders. What had we gotten ourselves into. My wife's make your own egg scramble was immense. My son's corn beef hash with scrambled eggs and a large fruit bowl had him grinning ear to ear. My meat lovers scramble with hash browns was just too much! We all gave it our best effort but we will be eating the leftovers tomorrow and maybe Tuesday as well. The flavors were great as was the service. Great lively atmosphere. Only sorry we live in Spokane. Nothing there compares to Gravy. We will be back to Portland again soon and Gravy will be on our itinerary.

A full platter

By barangrill |

Went early on a Sunday morning and was seated immediately. Others arriving a bit later weren't so lucky as the line tends to grow as the day progresses. The menu focuses on familiar comfort-food type items. You won't find a crepe or a parfait here, but if you did, they'd serve a mountain of them to you. Portions are very large, tasty, and filling. I'd even wait in line to eat here again.

It’s Gravy good!!

By Sandie2020 |

Best Mac n cheese! Fun atmosphere! This is where the locals go! Definitely worth a trip!! Great comfort food! Definitely returning!!!

Amazing portions

By Grammyskids |

My husband and I found this Eastside Portland restaurant by asking Google for great brunch places! This place exceeded the reviews we read online! We walked in and saw the gargantuan portions other diners were eating and hoped they tasted as good as they looked. We both ordered omlets and substituted French Toast for other side options. Truly we should have ordered one meal for the two of us as we ended up each taking home over half our meals. The omlets were stuffed with huge portions of the ingriedients and were delicious. The star of the meals was the Challah Bread French Toast. The slices were huge, and clearly were soaked in an egg batter that tasted like Creme brûlée! I truly think this is the best French Toast in Portland! The waitress, Kelly, was attentive and accommodating. We understand that there is usually a huge waiting time to be seated but at 1:30 pm on a Monday we were able to be seated immediately. The gentleman at the next table had the most amazing and huge Monte Cristo Sandwich and said he was a regular customer! We feel we made a lucky find, and that the prices were fair because the huge portions guaranteed take home food for another meal. Gravy has opened another location on NE Sandy, but we hope they will consider a Westside location closer to where we live. However, we definitely will be repeat customers. Bottom line is we enjoyed a yummy brunch in a revitalized, trendy Portland neighborhood.

Gravy for Breakfast is a Very Good Idea!

By Lisa_in_So_Cal |

Despite a name more suitable to dinner they no longer serve(!) this is one great place to have breakfast. It was busy even mid-morning on a weekday, but the servers are so efficient that we only waited a few minutes. I had brulee oatmeal with fresh berries. It was a HUGE serving, but I managed to finish it all =>. Why hasn't anyone thought of burning molten sugar over oatmeal before? My son ordered a Monte Cristo, and got a deconstructed version which he really enjoyed. Coffee refills were prompt and I had made-from-scratch cocoa. Tables are close, but rather than being annoying, it meant that we ended up talking with our neighbors, comparing meal choices and playing with the baby.. Probably not the best location for a heart-to-heart discussion with anyone, but definitely one of the best breakfasts I have ever had, without doubt.

Perfect Brunch...

By Craig J |

We came here by chance as we happened to be in the area, and managed to sit immediately without waiting. Wow, what an amazing brunch, there are a lot of options on the menu which made the first task of ordering a challenge. When we did order, we found the portion sizes generous, but the taste of the food was so delicious!! The pancakes were the best I’ve had so far in this 4 week trip to Oregon! Will definitely be back very soon... 😀

Beyond YUM!

By Beth S |

My niece was not enthusiastic about "gravy" for breakfast... UNTIL it was brought to the table. The biscuit without the gravy is mouthwatering, add the gravy and well, beyond yum! If you're not a biscuit and gravy fan (yet), then their french toast was a fabulous option. There may be a line when you go, but I promise it'll be worth the wait!

Amazing French toast!

By Saydee09 |

Get here early and maybe you won’t have to wait too long. We waited 15 minutes but it was SO worth it. Eggs, bacon and French toast were PERFECT! The coffee was very good too. Husband wasn’t too impressed with the biscuit and gravy but we’re from GA so we’re used to good southern style biscuits & gravy. Service was wonderful. Enjoyed this breakfast spot tremendously! Servings are huge!!!

The server brought extra cream with the coffee refill

By macmacpherson |

I know what you are thinking. So what! But how many places have you been to where they notice your cream is low and bring you more without you having to ask. Oh, and the hash browns were extra crispy. Wonderful, I usually avoid hash browns because they are often soggy and undercooked. Not here. You can get fruit instead of potatoes if you want. The omelet was full of stuff and hot. I looked around at what other folks ordered and everything looked good. Next time I may try what looked like oatmeal or maybe the french toast. Prices were very reasonable. The coffee wasn't the best, but everything else was great.

Best Breakfast Ever

By Jane L |

Gravy's breakfast is hard to beat; both in quality and quantity and we have been to breakfast restaurants quite a bit in different parts of the country. Have not found a Monte Cristo as good or as ginormous as at Gravy. Their biscuit and gravy is awesome! Generally I skip lunch and at times dinner because it fills me up.

Breakfast was great but the ketchup was the best

By Tosakes |

Had their oatmeal sweet bowl. It was wonderful and beyond my ability to finish. The oatmeal was the old fashion variety and the apples in it were coated in Sugar and spices. My companion had eggs biscuits and hash browns that were great but whatever lets up they used was the best I have ever had

Geat breakfast

By jvenneberg |

First of all, be prepared to wait . We came on a Sunday morning for breakfast. We arrived at 8:45 and waited until 9:40. There were almost more people waiting outside than were eating inside...Take note... They will not seat you until your whole party is there... Hence our wait of 15 extra minutes. You sign yourself in on the list. The guy who called everyone's name was very busy but very nice, also. Our food was wonderful. Between us all we had the corned beef hash, plain eggs, biscuits, a scramble and a fried egg sandwich with tomato, cheese and bacon. Zero complaints. Fruit is an option instead of potatoes... Which looked yummy.... I would definitely come here agin..every plate that went by looked delicious... And the portions are very generous.

Come ready to eat!

By Althea C |

Delicious food! The veggie mushroom gravy was to die for. The servings are absolutely humongous. This place was worth every penny and highly recommended.

Always a treat

By nlrgrl |

Whenever I travel to the Pacific northwest I make it a point to go to Gra y. There is always a way to restaurant is crowded and noisy but I've always found the service to be good and the food was wonderful. My Bacato scramble (bacon, tomato, cream cheese) was wonderful! The portions are large, and I have a large appetite, but I was only able to eat about half. I took the remaining half home and it was even good the next day reheated in the microwave. I would recommend this restaurant highly I can't imagine it ever getting less than a five rating

A must go

By Cyndi S |

The breakfast was amazing..of course with the name Gravy, the sausage gravy was incredible. The portions are enormous so share or plan for a to go box.

Great Find on Mississipi Street!

By Donald J R |

The name caught my attention, and being ever curious for a new eating adventure, I popped in with a friend. We were warmly greeted and seated at a table. Menus were given and drink orders taken. We both ordered the biscuits and gravy, my friend the meat version, and I ordered the vegetable version. Our plates arrived with two huge biscuits, my friend had the meat version and I had the vegetable one. It comes with one or two eggs to your order. If you have a lite appetite, I recommend getting only one biscuit. There are many sides to order, and a great menu with other yummy things to savor. Overall, we were both happy with our orders, and plan on returning to sample the other yummy and interesting menu options.

Yummy

By weatfood |

On a recent trip North we decided that we were hungry and wanted to have breakfast. So we had heard there was quite a few yummy restaurants in North Portland and decided to stop in at one. First on my list was Gravy. Got there early about 7:30 in the morning we were one of the first to arrive and enter the restaurant. We didn't have to wait long and we're seated right away. Waiter took our order and without much of a wait we had a very delicious breakfast.

Great food, cool location

By RamblinTrav |

Gravy has all the breakfast favorites. The service was good, and the wait for a Saturday morning wasn't too bad (about 35 mins for 2). I wish the portions were smaller though. Way more food than any person could eat. Overall a great place for breakfast.

Very good biscuits and Gravy and the Banana Chocolate Chip pancakes are good too.

By Milestogo007 |

I ate here two days in a row. The menu is good sized and there is a lot of decision making to be made. My first day I just had to have the Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes with a glass of milk. The pancakes are huge, they give you three huge ones. I was kind of hoping for a smaller portion. I had to put half of it in a to go box. The pancakes tasted very good. They give you heated syrup and butter also. The next visit I ordered the biscuits and gravy, a side of sausage, and two scrambled eggs. All was very good with the exception of the homemade ketchup. Portland restaurants like to tout home made ketchup and tell you how good it is for you. All I can say is I would rather have a heart attack and enjoy salt infused Heinz ketchup. Home made ketchup tastes awful, case closed. All in all I highly recommend Gravy, but I suggest you bring your own ketchup.

Terrible service good food

By Jake |

We called ahead and confirmed the establishment could accommodate a large group which they assured us they could do. We ended up waiting for an hour after arrival only to be told that they were contemplating splitting our table to serve multiple smaller parties rather than seat us. The hostess was not receptive to our distress at the situation and refused to get us a manager. Ultimately we were able to get a manager and got seated after a very long wait. The food ended up being pretty good but the overall experience was horrendous.

What's going on?

By Monica R |

I know we've been here before (can't find my 1st review) and it was awesome but this time.. umm not so much. From what I remember I ordered the Dalise. It has three meats, veggies, egg omelette. My boyfriend got the chicken fried steak. We both got the hash browns. This time it was super greasy and just kind of thrown together. Which unlike my first time, I don't remember that much grease nor it being that messy, I didn't ask for a scramble. I was saddened that the hash browns were dry and burnt on the bottom. Normally I don't send things back. Some mistakes turn out good but this was weird. My boyfriend's steak seriously tasted like it was soaked in some kind of wine. I don't know if that's a thing some cooks do or that's even part of a unique way to cook chicken Frid steak but it tasted off. Again.. we don't remember it being this weird and we're both perfectly healthy!? Besides our strange food situation, the staff was attentive. Waters and coffee cups were kept full. Bathrooms were clean and well kept. I do want to be honest about our meal, we didn't feel good for many hours after. We were so surprised at how we felt since we LOVED our first time. I won't claim food poisoning (I've had my fair share) but we both had to use the bathroom multiple times one our way up North and having worked in the food industry my self for almost a decade, I just know something wasn't right. We'll come back but maybe a bit later. I'm not one to give up.

Not worth the wait

By Manniac M |

They dont say hello, they let you wait, its loud inside and not very comfy. Our food (pecan pancakes - preparing them took forever...) was okay. Not as fluffy as we hoped for, but okay. Would not recommend coming here.

Most excellent...

By cmurrell23 |

Huge portions! Let me start by saying bring your appetite. The portions are larger than we expected therefore we left with two boxes even tho we were starving. We wanted breakfast and thought we'd try Gravy due to the good reviews. The wait time was about 30min. We don't usually like waiting in lines for restaurants, but it was definitely worth it. The place is small with 4-person and 2-person tables, but it's in a great spot on N. Mississippi Ave. Plenty of parking spaces along the street. If you want a great breakfast make plans to go here. My wife had The Dalise (omelette filled w/bacon, sausage, ham, sweet peppers, mushroom, onion, and cheddar, covered in sausage gravy). I had two Eggs & two sides (breakfast potatoes & bacon (3)) and our son had pancakes & breakfast potatoes. We all enjoyed our selections and happily shared to try to eat as much as possible.

Bring your appetite!

By Jennifer H |

This place did not disappoint! My sister and I came here for breakfast after a recommendation and we loved it. The portions are large so bring your appetite. I got the fried egg sandwich with peppers, cheese, and veggie sausage on sourdough. Not sure if they make the veggie sausage but it was amazing. The sourdough bread was fresh and tasted homemade. I did see another diner eating pancakes and French toast that gave me some envy but overall I would come back and recommend this great breakfast spot!

It's all Gravy :)

By Samantha A |

Gravy is in a cute neighbourhood on Mississippi st. Be sure to explore other places here that are walking distance. Gravy was excellent - I had the Greco omlette and fiance had the Delise. We shared a gluten free buck wheat pancake on the side and both dishes came with shredded hashbrowns. The biscuits look amazing and we will need to try them next time.

Epic brunch. Unwelcoming staff.

By Joe F |

I had fried eggs which were perfect, awesome breakfast potatoes & outstandingly memorable French Toast. Server was ok, but the atmosphere just felt very dull and mundane. Not the feeling I expected after the great things I had heard about this establishment. I felt that our server had bigger fish to fry and that he was uninterested and did not care whether we enjoyed ourselves or not. I would go again due to the quality of the food, hoping the serving staff was just having an off day. Dirty tables not being bussed for long periods of time. Bar was also dirty limiting places for others to sit while waiting for a table. Multiple staff members huddled around a clip board. Strange front of house practices.

Biscuts and Gravy

By Ed S |

At here because of the review on Trip Advisor and also it was within walking distance of my hotel. I ate breakfast here and was really looking forward to it because the review said the biscuts and gravy were really good. The half order was OK - really nothing special. I found the gravy a bit on the bland side - needed some hot sauce to liven it up. The poached egg was good, The ambience was OK - I found the tables a bit close together for my liking. Your neighbor is right at your elbow and you can hear every word of their conversation. The service was good and reasonably efficient. The price was average - not too high and certainly not cheap.

Very rude and unpleasant

By rferg10 |

Gravys used to be great. Recently their customer service has plummeted. Not too long ago a friend and I had finished our food and was sitting there enjoying conversion when we were approched by waiter and told that it was rude to not leave tip. I planned on leaving my tip when I left. Manager felt like it was nothing wrong with what waiter had done. Yesterday I was being ignored by my waiter had to literally flag someone down whenever I needed something. Shorty after food arrived I was ask how it was and was very displeased with my order. Wait jus turned around and walked off. I wasn't offered to be made anything else. Out of my whole meal the only thing I ate was 2eggs. It was very rude. I will never go there again

Portland gem, worth the wait!

By Matt H |

Let's start with this: 100% worth the wait. The place is incredibly small yet so personal. It's bustling activity and environment creates this feel of being at home at a huge family reunion surrounded by extended relatives. I came here during my recent trip to Portland. The staff was very friendly and vocal about their recommendations. Refills of coffee, a central trait of a true diner (don't let anyone tell you different). I ended with the decision of corned beef and hash, it was scrumptious. Well seasoned and a perfect ratio of ingredients. Definitely worth waiting in the rain for this place, and highly recommended for anyone in town.

BEST Breakfast in Portland

By Jodi M |

Nothing like a big breakfast of bacon and eggs and endless coffee after a hard trail run. We love visiting Portland and especially going to this breakfast place. Long line up to get in but well worth the wait. The corned beef and hash is highly recommended!!

Family brunch

By Ana-Drezdin |

4 of us visited Gravy for brunch on a Wednesday. We only waited about 5 minutes, so we were glad to be there on a weekday! I believe our waiter was Antonio. We were visiting from out of state and he was awesome with recommending places to visit! Now to the food: we tried the French toast - so good! Biscuits and gravy-different to us, but tasty!! It somewhat tastes like Italian sausage gravy, which was very delicious. Also tried the bacon, tomato, cheddar , egg sandwich on sourdough - delicious! And huge. I had to split half with my husband. We'd definitely return.

Love it ...

By Phillip C |

First time here and we loved it..there was a,long line but hey in food wasn't good there wouldn't be a line.. the food was well worth the wait.. soooooooo good. I had the omelette with sausage bacon spinach and tomatoes in it my wife had the French toast which was awesome. Can't wait to go back ... definitely on the top of my food places list.....

These folks know how to make breakfast an EVENT

By David K |

I found this place via a google search for good breakfasts near my motel. I was so impressed by my first visit that I went back the next morning. The atmosphere is hip neighborhood casual, with rock music, and servers with black T-shirts and piercings. But if that scene is a bit intimidating, just remember that the food is top notch. (And the servers were professional and helpful.) The portions were enormous. And the oatmeal brulee was no doubt the best I've ever tasted, while my over-easy eggs, hash browns and hot sauce were like having a luscious dinner for breakfast. Parking on the street out front was pretty easy at that time of day, too.

They Live Up to Their Name!

By melbari |

I ate there with a number of friends and we all thought the food was great, from a huge BLT to an equally large cornbeef hash and eggs. I had one biscuit and the best gravy ever! With a side of bacon I skipped lunch!

Gravy Goodness

By MissDee15 |

I recently visited Portland and Gravy was a highly recommended spot. It did not let me down. Like most neighborhood spots, even during the middle of the week there is a healthy wait time to be seated. So plan accordingly. The food was fresh down to the hot tea being served loose leafed and the service was attentive and helpful especially for newbies like myself. As a pescatarian I appreciated the veggie gravy option so I would not be left out from the literal "gravy" experience. The only unfortunate point is that the portions are so large I had to pause my gluttony and opt for a to-go box :-)

First Time Visit

By narcisse07 |

The service was really good. The place had a steady stream of customers. I ordered two eggs, with sausage. The sausage was just okay, in my opinion. Quite dry. I wasn't overly impressed with the food, but perhaps I need to order something different in the future. We haven't ruled Gravy out, just didn't find it as impressive as its reviews touted it to be.

Individuality, great spice combinations, a one off excellent adventure.

By westernboy007 |

This busy little place is filled with excellent staff who strive to make your stay enjoyable. I was raised in the free love, peace and brotherhood era and that's what I felt when I ate there. We had breakfast but it was different than the normal. My dear wife had a Creme Brulee oatmeal which was large and tasty, very succulent and memorable. I had the typical ham and eggs but the ham was over the top tasty and a large serving. The coffee was good and the waiter kept my cup full. His manner was excellent and we were served fast. The decor is a little rough but individualistic and fit the atmosphere. Next time I'm in Portland I shall return and I recommend this place.

Not As Good As I Remember

By KendraTravels |

I was excited to come back to Gravy during my recent visit to Portland. My son and I each had a hash: me - smoked salmon hash, he had the roast beef hash. I was disappointed in the smoked salmon hash. It just didn't taste great. I also had the greens, which were seasoned with something I've never had before. They weren't good at all. However, the biscuit saved the day. I ordered one biscuit (no gravy), because you can't go to Gavy and not have a biscuit. It was delicious. The portions are enough for 2 people, by the way. The service was great.

Average brunch with average long wait.

By SassyAdventures |

I waited an hour for brunch which is typical for Portland. And my friend and I ordered biscuits and gravy (in a place called gravy it's a must) with over easy eggs and a side of hash browns and French toast to share. The service was wonderful, the spanish coffee was very nice. But the biscuits were so dry I thought that must be why this place is called gravy you need to order additional sides just to make the biscuits edible. But the food was tasty overall, but I would rather go somewhere more special if I'm gonna wait that long. If it's a slower day stop by and be sure to ask for extra Gravy.

Bountiful Breakfast!

By MaryClem |

This is a great little spot in Portland! Our waitress Amanda took great care of us! We enjoyed the Challah French Toast which was the perfect combination of crunchy, soft and sweet! The Salmon Hash was enjoyed by my better half....give this awesome spot a try!

Huge Portions and Flavor to match

By Bryanelgreat |

Stopped by this place during my visit to Portland, and was not disappointed. I had the breakfast Sandwich with Sausage and I'm glad i did! The sausage with really delicious. I also ordered a biscuit with gravy and it was one of the best I've had. I definitely recommend stopping by.

Divine Gravy

By Tiger B |

Granted, going to Gravy takes time, especially on the weekends, because there is always a line out the door. Kindly, they have a full coffee pot for all the hungry diners waiting for a a table. The place could easily double in size and still be busy, but it is just a small store front in the Mississippi neighborhood, where quaint is the name of the game. Once you sit down, what will strike you is how laid back the wait staff is. They have that calm about them, as if a jam-packed restaurant is just another weekend day, and they have no sense of rushing you out. You are there to dine, and they will make the most of it. Gravy. The name sake. It is absolutely divine, If you don't mind indulging, order the homemade biscuits and pork gravy and prepare yourself to be transported to pork heaven. Not into "poisoning" your body? You can order greens and vegan gravy and lots of good-for-you things as well. I've tasted the greens, and they are wonderful, but when I go to Gravy, I want to full-fat version: Homemade, flaky biscuits. Corn Beef Hash to die for, fluffy omelets with creative twists, strong coffee. Homemade hash browns or cut up potatoes. A breakfast place can't get any better.

excellent!

By vratcliff |

Had breakfast here with family...generous portions, maybe too generous! Extremely reasonable prices and the very best biscuits and gravy ever. Would definitely return. My daughter and granddaughter split a scramble...cannot imagine how anyone would be able to eat the entire thing alone. Son in law had a side of french toast with his standard egg, hash brown and bacon meal. It was made with challah bread and delicious.

Ahhh... breakfast all day!

By Julie |

Despite a wait of 15 minutes or so, our family thoroughly enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Gravy. Don't let the wait time cause you to miss out! The menu included a wide array of choices for our healthy eaters... and for those who were not so inclined. :) Yum. YUM. Seriously. Great service, too!

Delicious breakfast spot

By haroula p |

We stayed in this neighborhood on our Portland trip and this breakfast place was great! There hash brown potatoes are not to be missed! Long line do get there early but totally worth it. The scrambles are also delicious and a unique spin on egg dishes.

Masterpiece in Country Style

By Debbi F |

I really don't like admitting this, however being a Texas country girl, I have to be honest on my appraisal of all food. Gravy is the epitome of cool and the best. outside of Texas, Chicken fried "country fried" Steak. The steak is pounded to tenderness. The portion is more than enough for three and the steak is fried to perfection. The gravy is a masterpiece, as if the steak needs anything to make it better anyway .My thoughts, I'll say this. I make a good country gravy but this gravy is savory, creamy, and a star unto itself. The meal was served with 2 eggs and potatoes (I had the home style. We also ordered biscuits and "GRAVY". The gravy (a masterpiece) and a heavenly fluffy light biscuit. I am rarely at a loss for words about food. Thoughts of the food in Gravy, leaves me breathless. The Wait staff is friendly. Ambiance homey...food Yes! Don't go to eat breakfast here because I recommended it, go because you want a gastronomical explosion. Thank you Mark Grecko for the Adventure.

Huge Portions!

By Kaleigh M |

Went here for breakfast, there was a wait but we got there early so it wasn't too bad. My husband and I shared the Dalise omelette which was big enough for the two of us. Next time I would get it as a scramble not an omelette but overall pretty good. Husband loved his hot chocolate.

Go Hungry, leave satisfied!

By Joe D |

Gravy is hard to describe! It's got great menu items - all organic, many gluten-free, or vegan (but not all) and something that's certain to please every taste and preference. I would highly recommend the oatmeal!

Great breakfest

By vladsuperman2 |

The wife and I stopped in here because she liked the name and loves biskets and gravy, she gives it 2 thumbs up and recommens it

Get the French toast; great place for breakfast.

By Kevin S |

We stopped here for lunch, and I decided to have breakfast for lunch. I had the bacato omelet and the French toast. Firstly, the French toast was amazing and I highly recommend ordering this. The omelet was good and overall this is a great breakfast/lunch spot.

Fantastic!

By amytmbk2 |

Loved my vegetarian biscuits and gravy! Also had a bite of the french toast, which was terrific! This place was super busy on a Saturday morning. We got there 20 minutes before the restaurant opened and there was already a line. Great service; happy people working there. I can't wait to go back and try something else! Great job, Gravy!

Hearty Food, Portland Style

If Missippippi is on your Portland adventures list, be sure to duck in here for breakfast. Great food, good service, and a vibe you'd expect in eclectic Portland.

Oatmeal. Need I say more?

By JuliaHubbel |

Baked apple oatmeal with crisp brulee on top. Oh. My. God. Never had anything like it and I am going back just for that oatmeal. WOW. My friends had an omelet that looked just as good, and hash browns that were ridiculously crispy, but my oatmeal was enough for three people. Un. Be. Lievable.

Wonderful breakfasts!

By Lori L |

This cozy, down home place has an extensive breakfast menus. Wonderful breakfasts! I had the best oatmeal I have ever had: piping hot oatmeal filling a large soup bowl, with bananas and raisins, and covered with a brown sugar topping which was caramelized to a crisp sugar crust. The pancakes were giant. Huge portions, reasonable prices. We went there three times. My only criticism is that they serve only regular coffee, no lattes. It was always crowded. Service was good.

Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Oh My!

By Honey53 |

I live in Salem and met a good friend on N. Mississippi for brunch/lunch. We had planned on going to Spicy Spoon, but for some reason, they were not open. So off we went to find a place to eat. We were across the street from Gravy and there were probably 10 people waiting outside. My friend had been there before and said it was really good, so we decided to have brunch/lunch there. It was a short wait and we were seated at a comfy spot. Nice atmosphere. I liked the artwork on the walls and a lot of happy people were enjoying their food. I ordered the chile verde and my friend had the bacon, tomato and egg sandwich. They serve breakfast all day long...who doesn't love breakfast! We got our food and it was a real plateful. Eggs cooked to perfection, really yummy and crispy hash browns with special ketchup that was really good! My chili verde had wonderful flavor and was moist and tender. It did come with hot corn tortillas, but I really enjoyed it on its own. Made me lonesome for my old BBQ days! Quantities were generous and I could not finish the chile verde and unfortunately I couldn't take it home because we had some serious snooping and chatting to get done before I headed back home to Salem. Service was great. Friendly and attentive, but unobtrusive. I will definitely be back and will be sure to pack a cooler and ice so I can relish my leftovers when I get home! Two thumbs up!

Come Hungry, and try the Sparkling Wine (Cava)

By klindsied |

Breakfast here was an all-time Portland high. We ate at the counter, had great service, they have good coffee, and the breakfasts were amazing. I had a scrambler and it was fantastic and huge and had more bacon in it than I have ever seen in one dish ever. Order one! My boyfriend had the biscuit and gravy, and their gravy (even to someone who did not grow up liking it) was phenomenal. Not your typical southern gravy, but so much better! Their cava (sparkling wine from spain) was great, not sweet, which is what I tend to look for in a champagne breakfast. All in all, we will be back next time we are in town.

We waited an hour and 20 mins to be seated. The food was good but not worth the wait. They werent in any rush to clear tables and not at all apologetic for making us wait so long. Won't return.

Wow! One of the best breakfasts we have ever had!

By LoveToTravel524 |

The day before we had helped our daughter and her partner move from the Bay Area to the fantastic N. Mississippi neighborhood. Our first morning there (a Saturday around 11am) we went to Gravy. Waited about 45 minutes to get in. I had the "Dalise" scramble that had a variety of meats and then the most amazing gravy on top and very delicious and crispy hash browns. None of us could finish our huge delicious meals so we were able to send leftovers home with our daughter. Our waiter was so nice and the place had a great vibe. Will definitely return here on every visit to Portland!

Delicious homestyle cooking.

By Stuart F |

A must place to go in a great neighborhood, for an incredible breakfast. Huge portions, more than enough to just get one main dish and a side to accommodate 2 people. Yes the lines and or wait can be a bit long, but the friendly service, delicious food and overall wonderful atmosphere make it worthwhile. Prices are also a good value for the quality of the food offered.

You deserve better food for the wait!

By RobDougG |

This is the kind of place that seems to equate enormous portions with good food. We waited an hour for a 2-top. My girlfriend ordered eggs, hashbrowns and a biscuit. I got a scramble with hashbrowns. The eggs and scramble were fine, nothing special. The biscuit was a little disappointing, not especially buttery or flaky. But worst of all were the hashbrowns: a pile of weirdly spaghetti-shaped potato that was slightly crispy on the outside with a sad, undercooked and not at all creamy center. Skip Gravy. If you’re going to wait an hour for brunch, you might as well go to Pine State Biscuits and get some tasty food for your effort.

Fantastic

Had a great breakfast here when we got stuck in Portland for a few days. Breakfast was great. The wife had a bacon, cheddar and tomato omelet. So. Much. Bacon. And the hash browns? Never seen something like that before. Delicious and amazing. I has to have the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were fantastic, light and fluffy, nicely done. The gravy was good, not as good as mine, but still good. Texture and color were spot on, but the flavor of the sausage was a little lacking. I was happy it was not sweet, as that ruins sausage gravy, it just was not quite as flavorful as I expected. This place is a nice walk from Emanuel hospital, a little over a mile round trip, and a welcome reprieve from hospital food if that is your situation.

Epic French toast on Mississippi

By Nina B |

Came here once before and ordered the biscuit and gravy. This time I ordered the French toast and it was epic. 4 slices of challah with a crackle of almond somewhere on the bread. Our waitress was fast and efficient. My only negative was the ridiculous amount of waiting. We watched as tables emptied and just sat there without them being prepped and readied. They need a busboy. The host was ill equipped to do it all.

Fantastic food that is worth waiting for

Sometimes it is the place you stumble across that just.......blows your mind (or mine at least). Friends and we were all walking up Mississippi Ave perusing the shops and wondering who's stomach was the hungriest. My wife threw down the gauntlet and decide some food needed to be located STAT as she was starting to feel ill. We looked at this place and that place, and then ran across Gravy. It was crowded but we still popped in to peek at a menu and decided to give Gravy a try. We accepted seating at the bar-like area because it'd be kinda different to sit there vs at a table (which weren't available anyway), and the layout was such that we could watch the cooks doing their thing. As we looked over the menu options, we started to notice that the portions on other tables were, ummmm, sizeable to say the least. That plus the crowd clicked - this must be some good food. Everyone decided what they wanted and a really friendly guy took our order and peeled off time where he could to answer our questions and engage us. When the food came and we all took our first bite(s), OMGeezy! All thoughts of socializing and stuff were gone, let the carnage begin. Everything.......was.......delicious!!!! Corned beef hash, bacon, eggs, biscuits, pancakes, potatos, french toast, salmon hash, coffee, juice, milk - doesn't even matter cause we couldn't enjoy the food enough. And there was plenty of it per plate. I tried the Spanish coffee and fell off a cliff into love with it (I make them at home now). Gravy isn't the cheapest option, but these days what is besides garbage food? And you certainly got plenty of delicious food for your money. Our 4-person group enjoyed Gravy so much, we brought a 6-person group back the next morning. One of the additional persons was so excited to eat (after hearing our glowing reports) that when we told him we were in danger of missing our flight (there was a significant wait outside Gravy this morning), his attitude was "well we'll see you some time down the road, I'm staying right here and experience this food" (he was not disappointed, we stayed with them, we missed our flight, it was worth it). If you are in town, you must give Gravy a try at least once. I think it is pretty safe to say you won't be let down. Just know that there may be quite a wait for a table, depending on the size of your group.

More Gravy please

Recently visited for breakfast and sat up at the bar. Best spot in the house for good view of the kitchen and chat with the awesome staff. The portions are huge (we didn't eat for hours afterwards!), the food was delicious and the service, excellent!

Worth the 15 minute wait

By brwydave02 |

Amazing restaurant, busy, busy, turning tables. The three person wait staff was in constant motion, serving, busing and seating - quite a show. The food was very good, my corn beef hash is the best that I can remember is any restaurant in my 76 years. My spouse enjoyed her Chile Verde meal. The portions are huge, and almost every table was filling styrofoam boxes to take home. We have another one or two meals in our take aways. Well priced, this is one of Portland best.

Worth It!

By Monica R |

It was so worth the wait! As you wait they do have a self serve coffee pot to pour your own cup. It's Portland and on a Saturday you need to get there early, or the lines, everywhere, are long! I ordered the red onion, cheddar and egg Scrabble with hash browns! The hash browns are HUGE! My boyfriend ordered biscuits and gravy. Holy moly, his was damn good! The biscuits were so moist and tender and the gravy was awesome just enough spice to round it out! Shout out to the waiters and waitresses! It was so busy and packed in there, that if it were me I would crack under pressure. Awesome job staff! The restaurant was clean and well kept! It smelled great and was pretty easy to find parking. I would seriously recommend for a visit! I know we'll be back!

Great breakfast spot!

By CatchnRelease1 |

Had the one biscuit and house made gravy. Awesome. Very casual and usually packed at the regular breakfast times but worth the wait. Been here a couple times and only had the above but is't sooo good I haven't had anything else.

Just try the baked oatmeal

By Amy D |

No question, the best baked oatmeal (or oatmeal, period) I've ever had. The berry is outstanding. I've tried it made with soy milk as well, and it is every bit as delicious (for those dairy-free breakfast lovers).

Breakfast Heaven

By Steven M |

I love a place that sticks to its roots - this is breakfast as it should be. Large portions that provide a meal for the rest of the day - great left overs - who doesn't like breakfast for dinner? First time we went for "brunch" at Gravy. The Bloody Mary was spicy but good. The pork chops and eggs was fantastic - My ultimate test of any restaurant is how they prepare their pork. Pan fried with perfect seasoning and love the rosemary hints. The omelette was the side of a truck, but perfect and fluffy. The hash browns are by far some of the best in Portland that I have sampled - brown/crispy and perfectly seasoned. Add the sausage gravy to the potatoes and I am in heaven. The line is always long on the weekends, but they seem to turn over tables quickly - easier to get a table for small groups. My new go to breakfast spot.

Great way to start the day!

By Len |

Gravy was the name so that is where I went for my first time here. And I will be back with reinforcements to work through the rest of the menu! The biscuit and sausage gravy was perfectly done and the scrambled eggs just right with the house special hot sauce to take them up a notch. Luckily I sat at the bar where I could watch the magicians in the kitchen work their spells. That bit of entertainment was more than worth the price of the meal...very reasonable I might add.

Food: Ohmygod | Price: Reasonable | Coffee: Decent | Servings: Huge

By Cody H |

Definitely the best place I at while in Portland. Portions are tremendous, food is excellent (try the Salmon Hash!), service was good, coffee was far better than many, and wait times were very reasonable. A must-try.

Terrific Place for Breakfast

By Grmpmbl |

We'd heard that this is the place to go for a weekday breakfast (unfortunately, it isn't open on the weekends), so we gave it a try. Delicious food, friendly server--we will definitely go back. I had the veggie gravy over a biscuit, with two eggs, and the meal was excellent. My husband had the bacon scramble and a (so-called) "short stack," and it was a huge portion of food--but also excellent. We were able to bring some (of his, anyway) home. A definite go-to in North Portland.

WONDERFUL BREAKFAST!

By ellen21203 |

There were seven adults altogether in our party. We didn't call ahead on this Friday morning. The restaurant was quite crowded, but in a few minutes we were able to be seated at the bar. We had to catch a plane, so we asked for, and got, expedited service. The kitchen is a well oiled machine! It is amazing that they can turn out food so quickly. And it is delicious! Our party members had corned beef hash, plain bacon and eggs, biscuits and gravy, french toast, and country fried steak. The portions are huge, easily sharable, and everything was delicious. Don't miss this great place to eat!! Probably the best breakfast ever!

Huge portions!

By Tourist_from_808 |

Their portion size is HUGE and the food taste great! Friendly staff and good service! 👍🏼👍🏼 Corned beef hash and sub side with french toast .. Yums !!

Great biscuits, but......

By LHA2013 |

Gravy is a small, popular restaurant and the wait was long. I understand this is always the case. The service was pretty good once we got seated. They are famous for their biscuits and gravy, so I ordered that plus some scrambled eggs and their home made sausage. The biscuit was large, fluffy and somewhat sweet. It was really good! The sausage gravy was well prepared but it had a very unusual flavor. When I tasted the home made sausage I could see why. Whatever spices they use in the sausage were not to my liking....others may love it though. I am from the South and am used to a very flavorful sausage that is entirely different from this. My guess is that this restaurant is trying to copy a Southern regional favorite and didn't quite get it right. The portions were large and the prices reasonable.

A nice find!

By Dian P |

Service was great. Food was excellent and their were a variety of choices. I had an omelet and my husband had the special--brisket. Servings were quite large. We will definitely come again

Well Worth the Hype

By Keith R |

Stopped by two days earlier and kept walking due to a very large 10 am Friday crowd. Seriously, 10 am on a weekday - I decided this must be the hipster place to go to be seen and doubted that any restaurant is worth a 45 minute wait. We decided to give it another try Sunday at 8:15 - we were staying a block away so why not. Best decision of our 5 -day visit. We were seated within 2 minutes - not even enough time to begin to whittle down the half dozen items on the menu that I wanted. (Many more items than that - I just saw at least 6 that I wanted.) Our wait person, Amanda, arrived at the table within seconds and returned often. It was clear that she was busy but she still stopped by regularly and patiently as I tried to make a selection. (Seriously, good omelette options, country fried steak, homemade corned beef hash, biscuits and gravy, oatmeal topped with a bunch of good looking stuff - and every time a server walked by I saw something else I wanted). My wife ordered a ham, cheese, and artichoke scramble and I opted for a 1 biscuit with gravy with 2 fried eggs because my wife and I share our rmeasI and I had seen the massive quantities of food on the plates and knew the corned beef hash and country fried steak I was jonesing for was going to be way too much. Still way too much and I left with a overfull belly and the next morning's breakfast. Everything was delicious - better than imagined. also I was shocked that the check was on $20. I had to recheck a couple times to make sure something wasn't left off. Regrets - - I really wish I had tried the corned beef hash, french toast, or country fried steak. - I left Amanda a 25% tip which is usually good for great service. After leaving a bunch of 20% tips when ordering at the counter and self-busing, 25% for excellent full service seems like ripping off your server person. Sorry Amanda - when all your blood rushes to your overstuffed stomach there's nothing left to power the brain. Know that your kind, patient and superior service is appreciated.

The best breakfast!

By Jgrayrib |

This restaurant serves the best breakfasts including delicious omelettes and scrambles. The portions are huge and incredibly good and fairly priced. Due to its popularity it is best to arrive early especially on a weekend.

SALT

By carol d |

I can see why people are attracted to this place; a cozy spot nestled in with other small shops along Mississippi Ave. And what comfort food is more revered than gravy? Even better, biscuits and gravy! I don’t actually know if there is a lunch menu, or if so, what is on it, as we were focused on biscuits and gravy. And other breakfast dishes. At our table, three of us ordered B&G with meat, and one tried the veggie gravy. We also placed various orders of eggs, bacon and house-made sausage. When the food arrived, each item, curiously, was on a separate plate, instead of putting the B&G, and eggs, and sausage on one platter. What could have and should have been stellar food was disappointing because it was too salty. The irony of it is that the gravy and the meats had very good flavor and they did not need that extra salt! I am really surprised, given the obvious effort into preparing good food here, they would not recognize that they have overdone it. In my mind I have renamed Gravy. It is Salt.

Delicious

By KendraTravels |

This place always has a long line and I managed to find the right time to go in the afternoon. I had something simple but it was great: scrambled eggs, bacon and a biscuit with sausage gravy. I'm no a big fan of biscuits and gravy but it was full of flavor and the biscuit was huge. I say there long enough to have a second biscuit with jam. Spectacular! I finished my breakfast off with a dreamsicle smoothie. Yes, it was great! If you can find the time, check them out. It's well worth the wait.

Great breakfast

By dja_mr |

Really enjoyed our breakfast here today. Walked past here over the weekend and the line of people waiting for a table was crazy! Going back today proved to be the best option as we got a table fine. The food was good and the serving sizes are huge! I mean huge! The option to build your own breakfast plate is great and is a great brunch option or breakfast of course! Really good food and good relatable servers doing a great job.

Huge portions! Pleasant staff

By M0ther_of_5 |

I ordered two eggs scrambled and the fruit and the bar. The fruit was yummy, although it had edges that made me think it was a day old or had freezer burn. The eggs must have been ostrich eggs as the serving was huge! The staff was delightful- couldn’t ask for better and the other customers were colorful. The old tractor seats at the bar were a little close together but creative.

Good bisquits for those who stand and wait.

By Ricky_Dee49 |

I have eaten there several times and whatever I order is very good. They are open for breakfast and brunch only. Each time I have been with 3 to 5 people and each time we have had an inordinate wait, while others who arrived were taken ahead of us because they were parties of two usually. So just be aware of this that they don't seem to be able to accommodate outside of the box, so to speak. It is a smaller place so that may be part of the problem we have had in extended wait times.

Good Comfort Food

By Paisan P |

This is a small place, not fancy open only for breakfast and lunch but, its entries are loaded with big flavors. The service for is fast and friendly and they have a menu that has something for everyone. We had the biscuits (cooked perfectly) an gravy (thick and full of flavor) and it was so good. The fried egg sandwich was also great. One of the few places that does not over cook your egg. The French toast, is made with challah bread and its really good. This place is a must stop when in Portland.

Late Afternoon Brunch Spot

By 856amberb |

Delicious Mississippi District local restaurant that serves brunch until 3 p.m. Large portions for less money. Breakfast meal has a large variety of delicious choices along with an al a carte menu. Recommend going during the week to avoid the crowds and the long waits on weekends.

It wasn't so great for us

By Proudmama35 |

We read wonderful reviews on yelp and we were so excited to go here. I will start with pros - The place is nice and quaint - the country fried steak was nice (not the best I have had but still good, I tasted it) - the herbal tea was quite nice Cons - the wait was extremely long and the waiter just skipped us but I remembered the family who put their name down before us and we were then seated immediately after (sucked) - the pancakes were on the doughy side - our waitress had to be flagged each time but apparently knew the people seated next to us and kept stopping by to see how they were doing and chit chatting - my potatoes were burnt (I never send food back) Now we may have been here on a day where the chef had a bad day or something but it wasn't pleasant for us on this visit.

Good food and big portions

By BarStoolBrother |

We had breakfast at Gravy on the advice of our airbnb hosts, who live in the neighborhood. Food is good and portions are huge; one portion and a side will easily satisfy even a big appetite.

Wow!

By dexter1953 |

3 of us went for Sunday brunch. Had a long wait to get a table but worth the wait. The food was freshly cooked and delicious, sausage gravy and hash browns were standout. The service is very efficient and obviously a very popular place for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Bring a BIG appetite, the portions are huge.

Breakfast Delight

By jjeadie |

Wow - the choices were unbelievable and the omelets were two meals worth. Exceptional service but expect to wait 30-45 minutes to be seated as it is

Unexpected and good

By Bryan L |

Their Biscuits and Gravy is made in house and so is the corn beef hash, with the addition of some new flavors they have taken classic breakfast food to a new level. The chicken fried steak is a steak not some poor beaten piece of mystery meat.

Large portions, good value

By Patrick D |

We tried Gravy for brunch today. It was @10:00 am on a Wednesday when we arrived. There were two of us. We put our name on the list and had about a ten minute wait. The space has a high ceiling and several sky-lights. It's open and pretty loud with a casual, hipster vibe. Once seated our waiter arrived promptly and took our order. He was friendly and good about refills. I ordered the biscuits with sausage gravy and my partner had the smoked salmon w/poached eggs. The biscuits were buttery, large and relatively flaky. The gravy was smooth and creamy w/chunks of sausage. However, there wasn't much flavor to the gravy. The sausage could have used some spices. I ended up adding quite a bit of black pepper trying to give it a little zing. The smoked salmon hash had excellent flavor. The salmon was shredded and mixed w/shredded potatoes and peppers. Quite tasty and a lot of it. It was served with a good sized bowl of cantaloupe, honeydew, grapes, and pineapple. All were sweet and fresh. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked. I thought the service, portion sizes, and value were all very good. I was disappointed by the blandness of the gravy. If you can get in quickly it's worth it, but I don't think it's worth the long wait it sounds like a lot of people experience.

Great Breakfast Spot

By RedheadinCr |

We got right in to this fun offbeat restaurant. With some of the best food around, and that is saying something in Portland! Te food was delicious and plentiful. My sister and I split our meal and my son took not only the balance of his food home but what was left of ours. I don't think there is anything on the menu that would not Wow you.

Great Bisquits

By rslot |

We're from Texas and know a little about Bisquits and gravy so this place rates high. We went with the country gravy and were really impressed. My family had scrambles and the Bacato seemed to be the best.
