Sometimes A Great Notion

By NeedPivo |

The Great Notion is a worthy addition to the Alberta District (and to the PDX scene). They have created some wonderful high-end IPA styles with about 10 taps. I enjoyed their Three-Way IPA, an homage to the New England style, and a crisp and tasty Farm Hand Sais son. Additionally, it is an attractive venue, popular with locals and friendly to families. The neighborhood is an interesting one with funky stores, eateries and many interesting murals. If you wish to take the bus here (which is a good idea when exploring several breweries), the No. 72 passes by. Look for the Pine State Biscuit sign and enter off Alberta Street. Certainly, another must in Beervana.

Great Notion Beaverton

By sean c |

Met friends here last night and was very surprised. Counter service only with a nice selection of microbrews ... if you like IPAs or stouts. There was little else. Pretty ridiculous for a gastropub. I could find one Pilsner that was ok. The food was a bigger surprise: just incredibly mediocre, flavorless pulled pork, Mac n cheese and greens. None of it had much flavor at all. They brought it fast, though. I feel bad, but just was very unimpressed.

Great beer

By Madeline Cook |

This place is full of great beer. Usually they have a variety of styles too, from hazy ipa’s to clear ipa’s, sour and fruity beers to stouts and porters. They offer four packs of cans to go and a good selection of tasty food.

Dinner

By Jason D |

The fried chicken sandwich was good. Waffle fries were good but dipping sauce was not. The jerk chicken tacos were okay. All the IPA beers were above average. Only cider on tap is viva pineapple. Friends had other dishes. Can't say anything jumped out as awesome but okay. Hate they added automatic 18% for group of only six. Probably one and only visit.

Good beer menu

By tleeEvans |

Lots of great beers to choose from. Can purchase in returnable bottle or different size growlers. Very good place to try regional beers and ciders

Nice little brewery

By lmstrad83 |

Love this little brewery off of Alberta St. There is a smoothie and massage place right in front of the building, so its a little hard to see at first. The building opens up to a nice patio and was a great place to hang out and enjoy the warm weather. The beer menu had something for everyone in our group, including a gluten free cider option. One thing I have noticed is Portland does not stay up very late compared to bigger cities. The bars seem to empty out after 10pm.

Excellent beer, better venue

By Eric H |

Love this brewery and not just because I'm a huge Ken Kesey fan and think "Sometimes a Great Notion" is the best American novel ever written. Lots of IPAs and even though I'm not a fan of fruity beers they had several I was impressed with. Right in the heart of Alberta action and an awesome tucked away spot so you feel like you are in in your own private beer heaven. Burger was incredible , as well.

Great IPA's and even better Mac-N-Cheese!

By Evolution26 |

So Great Notion Brewing won Best IPA out of 73 entries in the Willamette Week's contest in Feb 2018. In Portland, IPA's are offered on nearly every block, and most are mediocre, at best. This brewery has a ridiculous selection of brewed-in-house offerings. The actually are releasing a new triple IPA tomorrow morning. Another noteworthy menu item is their Mac-n-Cheese. They offer it with your choice of 1,2 or 3 slices of crispy bacon deliciousness... Next Level. The staff are very knowledgable & pleasant to interact with, unlike many establishments in Portland. A great experience overall. Definitely give this spot a try.

Good beer, food and patio

By Amy M |

Drank the Blueberry Keylime Mochi - delicious! Also ordered the brussel sprout appetizer which was very good too. We're sitting on the patio - very nice atmosphere.

Great hazy IPA’s

By Conrad J |

Great selection of beers for all level of beer drinkers. At least 7 hazy IPA’s on day the day we visited. Food was ok and the place is kid friendly. All the IPA’s we had were good and I liked the blackened salmon sandwich with waffle fries. They also sell crowlers for the take home crowd but only two to choose from each day.

Nice atmosphere - decent beer

By Artyay |

Nice atmosphere. It has a patio area with garage door opening to small bar. My sister said "the Vibe is good". Some of the beers that I tried: Double Stack is an American imperial stout (10%) - has a good taste of coffee and maple syrup. Super Duper Ripe is high alcohol at 11% - a little too citrusy for my taste. Ocean Peaches – if you like fruity beer you should order this ale. Juicebox is an 8.2% IPA imperial – also a little fruity but good. Juice Junior is a good basic IPA The veggie burger is delicious.

Great beer, great food!

By lenetskyshev |

The restaurant and patio were jammed on an early Sunday evening. The staff was friendly and efficient. We were greeted and served quickly considering the crowd. Good beer and amazing food. Good place for families as well as couples.

Great find in Portland

By eatintheclaw |

It a little bit out of downtown but worth the trip. The Beer selection is amazing and creative. The food we had was fresh and tasty with good service. We will be going back again. Can get crowded but has a nice stand up bar to have a beer while waiting.

You need their brews in order to eat their food.

By Kovia P |

The staff is stiff. No substitutions allowed, cant even 86 the sides. I was the DD for a party of nine, so i couldnt get drunk prior to eating the food, but i can see that i needed to. The Blackened Salmon Burger is creative, but the Salmon sorely lacked the Blackened flavor and the Salmon skin wasn't crispy so it ruined both the texture and flavor. The Crispy Brussel Sprouts are horrible. They're flash fried to the point where u dont really get any brussel sprout essence/flavor. Biting into them causes them to disintegrate into fryer oil. To top it off, its garnished with scant lemon, bacon bits, and i believe ranch. Absolutely revolting.

Fruity Sours, Dessert Darks, and other goodness

By Sam DeLiso |

OUTSTANDING craft brewery with an attractive and inviting tasting room of decent size, a wide variety of rather unique beers (approx 20, ranging from fruity sours to a dark stouts), and a tasty menu hosting an array of above average pub fare. The service was prompt and polite, assisted with a smile repeatedly by our bartender Amanda. Orchard Reserve Cherry was further on the bitter end of the sour spectrum, still slightly sweet in a mouth puckering way, butttt the Blueberry Muffin sour was jussssst right! Such a lovely fresh tasting, yet extra infused blueberry flavor (this is definitely full on fruit to be blunt)... I absolutely loved it! Despite not caring for IPAs much, I had to taste several of them since they sounded so incredibly innovative, such as Lychee Mochi, Mango Coconut, Fruit by the Foot, Fruited, Pineapple, the list goes on...these are really tasty, fruity, English style IPAs, thus they have much more flavor than your standard over-hopped American style IPAs. The Wiggle and Squirm that my buddy had were also very tolerable and lightly hopped, citrusy IPAs that I could actually enjoy drinking. My last beer was the Coconut Chocolate Brownie Stout, super dark, rich and weighing in at a hefty 12% ABV... mmm!! The end! Food sounded/looked great, simply wanted beer this time around, yet I know we will be back again soon, surely to find a new batch of brews to taste! Patio seating, food carts, and biscuit place next door are also additional upsides to this location. Thanks for the liquid lunch! P.S. The REAL changing table in the restroom is awesome! So much better than those horrible pull down ones... Can't wait till my baby craps her pants while I'm having a pint there 😂 Best, ~S

Amazing beer

By Kara S |

Stopped in for a quick beer and I was blown away. So many different kinds to choose from and each one was super delicious. I did not have a chance to try any food, but the chicken wings looked incredibly good. I can't wait to go back.

Hipster Brews and Tasty Food

By Emily Frazer |

I visited this brewpub while I was in town for work. Both times I visited, I had the JB Dipa. I highly recommend this beer to anyone that likes a bold, fruity IPA. I think that I might not be cool enough for this place, because all of the other patrons were younger hipster/ millenials, but I felt very welcomed by the staff. Speaking of the staff, I often ask for suggestions and the waitstaff was happy to give me some great ones! Check this place out, but be forewarned that you must park in the surrounding neighborhood on the street.

terrible customer service, communication and ethics

By Dee R |

Beware doing business with this company, particularly for a monthly subscription. When you sign up, there is no way to cancel the subscription online (although you can certainly sign up online and give them your billing info really easily) and reaching out by email, phone or in person is an excercise in futility. The tend to respond to emails a week or so later, if they respond at all, and no one at the physical locations can help and just hand you a card with a phone number and email on it. I was billed for more than a year of subscription boxes that were never picked up and they are refusing to either provide me with the beer (the original boxes have already been sold or not available) or a credit for the amount towards other beer. They are just trying to tell me I am SOL Seems like they don't understand consumer laws around actually delivering a product that they have sold. Unfortunately I will be escalating this to a filing with the better business bureau and or small claims court. Super silly, i would be happy with just getting the beer i paid for which seems like a really simple ask. Too bad, they have great beer, but there is a lot of great beer in this town that you can buy to support folks with better ethics and customer service.

Great food and atmosphere!

By Caitlin W |

Recently visited this brewery during our weekend trip to Portland. Absolutely loved our meal! Best meal we had our entire trip. Having been to more breweries than we can count, we had high hopes for the beer but was only subpar in our books. Great atmosphere and everyone was super nice. Worth a visit while in Portland.

Great beer and busy location

By RUTexan |

Located on a popular spot on Alberta. We went early Saturday afternoon and the place was full. The beers are top of the line and reasonably priced. The food was good as well.

Nice outside seating

By tleeEvans |

Great food and beer. Love sitting outside. Good choice of food on the menu along with the beer. Cant go wrong with any of the food items, as all that we ordered that evening was great.

Great Notion Made Me a Lover of Hazy Juicy IPAs

By Imagine&Go |

My husband is a beer fanatic. We try beer everywhere we go and living in San Diego we have access to a lot of quality beer. However, it wasn't until Great Notion in Portland that I found what I really like -- Hazy, Juicy, IPAs. We went twice during a week visit to Portland and I fell in love with all of their amazing IPAs and their incredible Stouts. Unfortunately for me, they don't bottle/can outside of the local area, so I sadly can't get their beer at home. Now, I am stuck looking for a solid second place in our area. So far no luck. Thanks Great Notion for making me a beer lover!

Prefunk before Blazers game

By C K Trevillyan |

Great beers. And even better, great sour beers. Also had a delish cheese burger. Beers are mostly 10.5oz pours, and the burger was a bit on the spendy side. But their house BBQ sauce is phenom.

Really good beer, friendly people

By JJTOH |

We were down the street and stopped in for a beer. Ours were excellent. There are several IPAs and some other choices. The food is all homemade and a cut above what you think of as brewery food. They brew onsite, and we liked watching them make beer as we sipped. I liked the low key atmosphere as opposed to the more commercial brew pubs around town.

Amazing and Unique Beer

By May S |

Another couple and my husband and I went to Great Notion Brewing Co. and sampled some of their beer. Wow! Everything we tasted had unique tastes and were excellent. We tasted a few of their sour IPA beers. The guava sour beer and the blueberry muffin sour beer were yummy. We loved the flavor of their Mandela IPA. It had the perfect amount of hops in it. In fact it’s now my favorite IPA. But my favorite beer that Great Notion brews is the Luminous. It’s a sour IPA. The flavor is unique and the perfect blend of sours and hops. Anyone looking for a fun brewery with outstanding and unique beer should go to Great Notion Brewery.

Good Brew selection, self serve ordering, wait staff delvered drinks, you bus your own table.

By fireinjunjoe |

Order drinks via an app. Waitress brings the food / drinks to your table. Bus your own table when your done. This location is with Matts BBQ Tacos. Unique experience. Not sure if this is a trend for the new bar service business model - tech order your drinks, they get delivered, you bus your own glassware when your done. Not bad, just different. The Beer selection and flavors were very good.

Try the Blueberry Wine or Beer

By Paisan P |

Portland is not a big advocate of California wines and instead supports the Portland Vineyards. You will find mostly white or rose whines. We drank mostly Oregon Chardonnay and found it comparable with California wines in both taste and price. The blueberry beer is a must for any beer lover as is the Blueberry wine for the wine lovers. They also have excellent food. We had the chicken sandwich and the chicken was loaded with flavor and perfectly cooked. The crispy Brussel sprouts were also excellent. Good service, friendly atmosphere, lots of beers to chose from and really good food. This place need to be on your list.

Unique beers and food, both excellent!

By TravelsForBeer |

Untappd led us to this wonderful brewery. We sat on their patio area. Quite a bit of greenery and tucked away. Located in a very cool neighborhood. Our beers were through the board excellent. Each very different from the other. Flavors easily distinguishable. Our two dishes were both vegan, even though we’re not. Thumbs up for the quality of food. Our sever was very friendly, attentive and happy to find answers for beyond the call of duty questions. Looking forward to rerun for new creations and memories.

Great beers lured us to a second visit

By hockeyjoe24 |

We visited twice last week, the first time to sample all their beers and some snacks, then a second time for more beers. The beers were great. The food was meh. House favorites were Luminous 02 and Mangosteen Mochi, plus the collab with Courtyard called Pina Kaleidoscope. The Triple Stack stout was also excellent, but I limited myself to a small pour of that big beer. We visited on a Friday afternoon and a Saturday early evening. The service was great and we were seated immediately on Friday and quickly enough that we didn't make it through the beer line at the bar while waiting on Saturday. The weather was sunny and clear.

Good food, friendly staff

By Moha L |

Steak sub was so delicious with cheese fries. Quite place, easy ordering through phone and pay through phone, I really like this idea.

Disappointing

By David L |

If you're an IPA fan, great place. Not a lot else. I found a stout I liked, however. The food was a bit disappointing. I had a grilled chicken thigh sandwich that had huge thick slabs that slid out of the bun and wouldn't stay in. Very sloppy and messy to eat.

Outstanding beer

By Rich H |

Had all of the NE IPAs and they were excellent. Steve the bartender was top notch. I had the fried chicken sandwich & it was also outstanding. Must visit if you like craft beer. The sour beers were also worth a try.

Great beer list and patio

By Scott M |

Wish I was hungry - the food looked great too. Settled in to try a number of their own brews...picked 3 hazy IPAs or varying delight, and the Luminous, a nice fruited sour IPA, and the recommended Blueberry Muffin (a bit on the sweet side). Service was terrifically helpful and friendly.

great place to visit with firends

By booghotfoot |

Our friends from the area took us here for a late lunch and beer. The locals rate this as one of the best brewpubs in town. We we lucky to get a table outside after a short wait (on a Saturday afternoon). The service was excellent, the atmosphere is fun, especially in the outdoor seating. Our meals were very good, and the beer was fabulous. Prices are fair too.

Great Brewpub in Alberta

By Vacation792174 |

Great brewery in Alberta Arts District. Really good choice of beers - our absolute favourite was Juice Junior, and plenty of seating onside and out. Excellent tacos from Matt's Tacos on site making for an all round good evening. Terrific staff as well. Highly recommended.

crazy beer

By Adam M |

Something magical happens at this brewery... The beers taste just like the awesome descriptions, double stack, blueberry muffin, key lime pie! Their IPA's are also stellar, do yourself a favor and order Juice or Juice Jr. A must visit while in portland.

Blueberry Sour, Nothing Else Matters

By Monica R |

The Bar is hidden on a side block and we almost missed it. The inside is beautiful with wood decor and various plants hanging from the ceiling. The staff is awesome and very welcoming, knowledgeable about the beers, and what's on tap. The food has always been great along with the atmosphere. Plenty of sitting, and I believe I saw an outdoor patio. I loved the Blueberry Sour. They don't normally have it for growlers but when they do I go crazy to get my hands on some! The brewers are easy to talk to and I like that they are willing to show off their work within the making of the beer itself. They do sell clothing and glasses of various sizes. Be sure to stop in a take a seat. You're in Portland with awesome hand made local beer.

Wow

By Andrea T |

This place has great craft beer if you are into rare beers. The flavors where so unique. If you want beer you have to come early cus they sell out before 1230 if it’s not on tap. The food for lunch....omg was amazing. They have choices for everyone. Meat eaters vegan vegetarians etc. the pulled pork fries or everything !!!! And the burgers are amazing

Go for the Beer and the Food!

By Xenabird |

We ordered a flight of beer. They have quite a few sours on tap along with west coast IPAs. The beers were fabulous. I particularly liked the blueberry muffin sour. Our dinners were also great, we each had a dinner bowl. Their dinners were much more inventive and flavorful than the usual brewery food. The menu on their website is not accurate. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The service was excellent as well. The brewery is located in a very trendy area for dining out. We found free street parking a few blocks away.

Not a Memorable Visit

By HDS1953 |

Not sure where to start, we didn’t feel welcomed as soon as we entered the brewery. The whole system needs to be changed to make it more customer friendly. I know there a virus going on but many others have figured it out! We actually walked out and the young lady who was far from friendly when we arrived did not care why we were leaving.

Amazing Beer

By jdjay |

Our son follows beer trends and breweries; and recommended this brewery to us. We are so glad that he did! Great juicy IPA's and sours are on tap. Every beer we tasted was just outstanding. I don't like sours, but the Blueberry Muffin sour was just wonderful. It smelled like a fresh baked blueberry muffin, when you drank it; it was tart and a bit sour, but the finish was like a blueberry muffin; it just blew my mind! We tried the 3 Way IPA, Peach (Punch you in the Eye), Mandela, Juice Box; everything beer we tasted was outstanding. We also had food here; I had a salad and my husband had the smoked salmon sandwich. Our food was very good, and our service was great. We liked it so much, we came back again. This time we came between 3 and 4 and things were not quite as busy. There is outside patio dining and indoor dining and a bar.

Cool place, fantastic beers

By James E |

I've been to many breweries in Portland, but the beers at this brewery were just amazing! I went on a busy Thursday evening. There was a bit of a wait to get a seat at a table, but it wasn't a bad wait. You can order a beer and they have a standing area. If you want to order a flight, you must be seated though. I didn't eat, but my friends said that the food was delicious. I was there for the beers and I was very impressed. They had mostly NE IPAs, but also had some imperial stouts. All were fantastic. Highly recommended. Did I mention that the beers were fantastic?

BEST BEER IN PORTLAND

By AshlieNO |

Love this place! Such delicious beers for any beer drinker. Juice Box and the Blueberry Muffin were my 2 favorites. Really nice staff as long as you stay out of their way. I got in the way of the host a few times while waiting for my beer at the bar and that did not make them very happy... but I didn't even care cause I was enjoying the beers so much. We went on a day where they were doing brewery tours and we got to meet one of the brew masters. It was so much fun and I loved hearing the story about how they got where they are today. If you are visiting Portland make this brewery a must do on your list!

Great Beer Great Food

By Dmtraine |

Tried it from friend recommendations. Wow. Loved the beer and the food. We started with a couple 10.5 ounce beers while waiting for our table. The ABV is high, so didn’t take long to feel the effect. We started with the JB DIPA and the DDH Ripe. Awesome taste. Once seated we got the flight of five with the blueberry muffin(wow-our top choice), the Juicy Jr., passion fruit Mochi, orange creamsicle and the strawberry tart. All good beer. The strawberry tart was our least fav of the five, but not by much. For food we got the tacos and the burger. Yum all around!!!! One of the best burgers I have had in town. We will be back. The beer is a bit more expensive, but after tasting it and the food, so worth it.

MUST visit for craft beer lovers

By Mfred57 |

This place is awesome! As visitors to Portland, we were interested in experiencing its finest craft beer, and I’m sure we found it at Great Notion! Beers we especially liked: Luminous 03 (and I’m not usually a fan of sour fruity beer), Ripe, Passionfruit Mochi, and DoubleStacked. Food was very good, veg friendly. Attentive service. Nice casual patio, picnic tables. I had to revise my whole beer rating scheme after this visit!

Hidden jewel on Alberta

By Dennis D |

This little hidden gem on Alberta street is definitely worth your visit. We have eaten at Pine Street biscuits numerous times, but have not stopped in to the brewery because they were closed (only negative is they don’t open till 12). We had lunch and a beer yesterday with 8 people and the food, beer, and service were all excellent. Make a point to stop in, the beer selection is mainly IPAs, but the have an excellent stout. The food is super.

Jelly Belly of beers

By Harold P |

Stoped here because it is directly behind Pine Sate Biscuit. Their logo and tag line got my attention. "With a passion for hops, and the patience for sours" The beers are the most aromatic I’ve ever had. The taste matched the smell was almost unsettling. With flavors of blueberry muffin, strawberry shortcake and guava mochi to name a few. One of the best beer tastings I’ve done to date and I have done plenty. Will be back for sure next Portland visit.

sour beer done right

By icledger |

We went twice to Great Notion Brewing for their sour beer. There were 2 choices both were excellent.

Great Brewery with Great Food

By nurse218 |

We came here on a business trip and it was so good that we came back twice!! Their beer is phenomenal and their food is awesome and comes out SO FAST! Defiantly worth trying!

Oregon Beer of the Year and best in Portland!!!

By Derrick D |

Easily the best brewery we visited out of 10+ in Portland. Go try everything they have, including Juice, Jr., the Oregon beer of the year!! Food was incredible too. The brussels sprouts were amazing. not a single complaint about this experience.

Family friendly breapub

By Rachelle O |

We visited Portland in the summer and went to quite a few breweries, but Great Nation was our favorite, we returned there twice! Food was very original and everything we had was delicious. The beer flights were fun and there was lots of variety for different tastes.

A great place to have a beer and food

By Nancy S |

I go to Great Notion from time to time, as they have a huge and interesting selection of beers that they make on site. The food is good too. Its always crowded in the evenings. The scene is lively, the staff is friendly and it is a fun place to go with friends. It is also on Alberta Street, which is a fun place to explore as there are a number of really good restaurants, bars and shops there.

Very drinkable beer with great flavours

By Belgiananddane |

We visited this small brewery for lunch and to taste the beer which we had heard a lot about. The flavours they have managed to add to the beers are extraordinary. I have never tasted anything like it, blueberries, lime, coffee just to mention a few different ones. One could easily spend the whole day there. But let me not forget to mention the two entrees we had for lunch. Pulled pork and chicken with choriso. They were both very tasty and plentifull. Great value for money. Do visit if you are in Portland.

Solid beers

By Nick M |

Found this place on a whim. Tried a flight and was thoroughly impressed by all of them. Would've stayed longer but I'm in Portland for that long of a time and I didn't want to get hammered right away

fun brewery

By Ready2Travl2 |

Fun brewery, nice staff. Great tasters. New England style beers at Great Notion. I really loved their Papaya sour ale, perfectly balanced (but didn't really taste sour as I am not a fan of those), and Biscuits & Hazy very lovely. Wish they had some to purchase, but oh well. We will return. Decent menu list.

Under the radar, but worth checking out!

By Chris L |

I first learned of this brewery at Extreme Beerfest in Boston and had the opportunity to visit when vacationing in Portland. Nice spot in a cool neighborhood outside of downtown. They special in flavors like Key Lime, Blueberry Pancakes, Chocolate Covered Strawberry, peanut butter stout, etc. Their stouts smell amazing—just like the flavors they are named for—but the aftertaste was a little rusty for me. The fruity IPAs also hit the mark on the flavors but are sour (as advertised). They have a great food menu and a hot sauce that I wish they bottled and sold—one of better sauces I’ve ever tasted!

Great beer and very good food

By ski&brew |

Baklava beer is a great unique flavored light color beer, try it. Ripe IPA was extremely fruity (good) and forget hazy, it was opaque but we like that mouthfeel. Waffle fries are fine and the side salad is good. Fried chicken sandwich had great flavor. BLT was very good though the bread was buttered on both sides so it was quite oily. This is a loud place. Beer prices were good while food seemed a buck or two high.

Best dang hazy beers anywhere

By clanhall |

These guys kill it on the hazy/east coast/west coast IPA deal. Always creative new brews on the menu. Get outside your comfort zone and try something that just sounds awesome. Maple syrup, pancakes, blueberries, peaches... all come out balanced and delicious without being a froofroo fruity beer. Great patio and food to boot

Bucket list brewery!

By Jessica L |

This brewery is amazing! Not only is the beer great but the atmosphere was fun. The Blueberry Muffin Sour was delicious as was all of the IPAs I tried! Super friendly staff and it’s located in a very cute neighborhood.

Spicy food and yummy beer

By Scott M |

Went back to this spot for a late lunch, and first time eating there. Ordered the wings and the Dirty Quinoa Salad - both delicious, and spicy. Better for cooling off with tasters of Ripe (hazy IPA) and Peanut Brother and Chocolate Covered Strawberry (both stouts). YUM! Good service by Steve D. Prices very reasonable.

Best beer in Portland

By Desjoquist |

We tried a lot of breweries in Portland, but the beer at Great Notion stands out as some of the best. Cool atmosphere and good food. The service was mediocre. It is worth the 10 minute drive from downtown. Stop by Ex Novo after for another round while you are out that way.

Hazy IPAs

By DGardJr |

Located in the arts district this place is known for its hazy IPAs. If you like them you are in the right place. They also have a sour on the menu called Blueberry Muffin...you have to at least ask to taste it if you don’t order a glass. It is literally like drinking a blueberry muffin...it is amazing. The burger and waffle fries were decent. We also had an order of the buffalo tostones, they were pretty good. Parking is on street so that might be a little bit of a challenge but I didn’t have any issue. Enjoy!

Stopped by for a beer

By Don_Asle1 |

Great pub atmosphere. Beer was fantastic. I tried 4 different brews through the night and none of them were disappointing.

All the beers were fantastic and the food is so delicious!

By TremontRaven |

I love many different kinds of beer and I can be a bit of a beer snob. I was surprised to find a brewery that excels in so many different kinds of beer. The sours were perfectly tart with great flavor. The IPAs were juicy and fresh. Their stouts were soooooo good. I honestly wish I could have taken a crowler of each of them home with me to Ohio to show everyone how good they are. Then, in addition to the beer, the food is crave worthy. Absolutely get the mac & cheese with the buffalo chicken. We had plenty enough for leftovers and couldn't wait to eat it again later. So good!!!

Great beer and food

By Micah214 |

Awesome beers and excellent food! We sat at the bar and Chad took great care of us (even though he’s a Broncos fan). The food service was quick. Get a flight so you can try a handful of their beers at once. We met a couple of people at the bar and ended up staying way longer than we planned but I’m glad we did. It’s a great place and a must stop if you like beer. The stouts were amazing!

Great Fun!

By sharrongeg |

This brewery is located near our daughter’s new home - so we gathered here to test the vibe. Such fun! Hubby tried a flight of 5 beers, each 5 oz ($19). He was a happy camper - but his favorite was the Single Stack, a coffee stout. Daughter loved the IPA. I appreciated that they also offered a few wine options for us non-beer folk. Super nice staff - we traded brewery stickers. Great Vibe! Lots of free street parking in the neighborhood.

Fun spot

By Steamboat323 |

We stopped by for a beer and some snacks while walking along Alberta Street. It was fairly busy on a Sunday afternoon but they have lots of space. We enjoyed an outdoor table and the beers were very good! The fried plantains and the waffle fries with spicy sauce were excellent. Service was okay but we weren't very needy either. Good spot!

Go here for the beer not the food

By LaLunaStella |

We were a group of five people that met here for lunch. Service was inattentive and slow. Three of us ordered the same overpriced dish/bowl and none of us liked it. It was advertised to come with corn tortilla chips and what we got were a stack of 10 sliced tortilla strips stuck to one another and sort of deep fried. I would never go back.

Decent brews & food

By Mario E. B |

Oregon beer is always good. Great Notion is exceptional. We had a couple of brews along with some beer munchies. Grabbed some brews to take home.

Top notch beer

By Michael R |

Dined with another family and had a great evening. I had the tacos with pulled pork. They had good flavor and were the ideal portion size. The beer was amazing. My wife and I shared 6 tasters and loved the breakfast stout and hazy IPAs. I’m not a fan of sours but really liked the blueberry sour. I’ll definitely be back when in town next.

Great Beer & Kid Friendly

By Stephanie L |

Some of the best and unique beer in town. Food is okay, some things are amazing like the burger, fries and salmon burger. The salads aren't my favorite. This is one of our favortie go to spots.

Amazing Beers!

By CaShawnB |

All the beers I had were super duper! If you enjoy sours and stouts(and I do!) this is the place for you!

Unique Flavor and Hops Combos!

By Jennette R |

While we were dining at a near by restaurant we noticed a lane forming in front of Great Notion. The line kept getting longer and longer and we still had no idea what the fuss was about. Once they opened people just kept coming in and out with crowlers and 6 packs. We had to check it out. Although we were on vacation we had to try some so we got a crowler and 6 pack as well. Delicious! I am not a fan of mircos but the Blueberry Muffin was amazing! Now I can see why people were lining up before they opened!

My husband and I went to many breweries on our visit to Portland and we liked this one the most. The food was very good, the atmosphere was fun and the beer selection was tasty and impressive. It was also very family friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

Yay! A Sour!

By Sharon L |

I Love that Portland is a land of sours and I took the recommendation of my friend to try to Blueberry Muffin Sour! I was not disappointed. The other beers at the table were good too, but I was very happy with my choice. There are so many other beers I want to come back and try....if I can not order this sour again!

Great Notion Brewing at lunch

By Martha J |

We were a large group of 7, grandparents, parents, & 3 kids. We were greeted graciously and seated inside within 15 minutes. The kids had things to draw on and with. All of us had a beer.... I had a Momo IPA, and the guys had Ripe IPA- a hazy IPA. We all had a different meal from shredded beef with veggies, fried plantains, and black and white beans to a grilled salmon sandwich and major burgers with fries. .... even the kid burgers were great! Well worth the price!

Get there early - good beer

By Kris P |

Great beer ;you can order any five of their 25 beers on tap for your own personalized flight. Food is good but the food trucks down the street have more interesting choices . Beer was terrific. We got their ten minutes after they opened and got one of the last tables - it’s popular!

Great Beer, Always Crowded

By Jessica M |

The beer they serve here is hands down the best beer I have ever had. Definitely the best beer in Portland. They always have something new to try. It is a very popular place so if you come after work or on a weekend be prepared to wait 30-45 minutes for a table. You can wait in their little fenced in area they call the Beer Garden and order a limited selection of beer there, or wait in a small line at the bar and have access to the full menu of beer while you wait in the beer garden. They are pet friendly outside and the servers always bring the doggos a water bowl. The servers aren't always the friendliest, but they are very busy. It is worth the wait for the beer. I really like getting the buffalo plantains (Buffalo Tostones). There is a nice jicama slaw that comes with them that makes a good pairing.

Delicious Beers

By Larissa M |

Quick visit but I LOVED the blueberry pancakes and blueberry muffin, the only sour beer I have ever enjoyed. So great. Couldn't get enough of their coffee stout either. We were on a kids free vacation but loved that they had a toy area and nice changing table in the bathroom. We only got fries but after trying the ketchup, I wish we had gotten more. It was great. I can only imagine how great the food was if the ketchup was jazzed up so deliciously.

Beer was great - need to go back for food next time!

By LoveToTravel524 |

We were strolling the Alberta Arts district in the afternoon with daughter and dog and decided to pop in for beers. The IPAs were fantastic. And the atmosphere was great. Would love to go back for a meal next time in Portland.

Excellent New England Style IPA!

By Sasquatch78 |

Went here on the recommendation of a Craft Beer Bartender, who told me that these guys were doing a New England Style IPA! Was planning on eating but did not. I can't remember if it was the menu of the Waitress's attitude but we did come to drink and the Tin Shed was right down the street! I Introduced myself to the owner and we chatted about Beer Styles and his philosophy on Beer Crafting! I'm glad to see that this East Coast Style is making it's presence known on the West Coast. Definitely not accepted by all brewers yet!

Double stack and chimichurri fries - job done!

By Paul_K_Oregon |

Airy and spacious. A bit industrial. But the stouts are amazing. The double stack is my new fave beer. Shared chimichurri fries. Yum.

Excellent beer, multiple styles

By Beabetravels |

It isn't often that every single beer style is spectacular at a brewery, this was the case here. I enjoy balanced beers, which doesn't always happen with IPA's, it does here with the juice box, the blueberry muffin sour and the stout. Those were the three that stood out to me, the others were also good. They limit release their beers and we were lucky enough that we just happened to be in the right place and the right time and took home some crowlers of juice box, all the way back to Alberta. We had an appetizer of tostones, which were drenched in buffalo sauce, I highly recommend ordering the sauce on the side for dipping. The topping offers a cool crispy relief from the spice. Service was friendly and talkative which was a pleasant treat, most servers are so busy in Portland, I find they either don't have time to chat or don't care to. It was a nice change to talk to genuine people. Wish we stayed here longer and ate more food! Would definitely be back!

Best beer in Portland

Absolutely worth heading out, the best beer in Portland. It was only shame I found here my last night, I would have come back many times if I had found it before hand

Good New Brewery

By Mary B |

I've been to Great Notion twice. It's in the now trendy Alberta district. Good beers, good food, very friendly people working here. They have a niche in east coast style "cloudy" beers. If that's your jam, check it out.

Try the Jammy Pants !!

By hgeep |

Great beer and friendly barkeeps. Try the veggie burger too. The 28th Street location is usually less crowded.

Great beer, great food

By NOLALeah |

Randomly picked this place for lunch & beer while walking along Alberta and I'm so glad we did. We both loved our beers (a sour and an IPA). I had the chicken sandwich with side salad - seemed like the chicken was fresh, not frozen tenders, and the spicy aoili was delicious. Loved the salad dressing too. The bf had a burger and said it was one of the best he'd ever had. Cooked well with great thin cut waffle fries - didn't know those even existed! Quick service, friendly staff and nice outdoor & indoor seating. They're behind the pine state biscuit place just off the main road.

Great brews, service...not so much.

By Miguel Angel |

I visited this new venue during my last visit to family and friends in Portland, PDX is full of new hip places and our friends told us about this highly awarded brewery. I just have to say that if you are not eating and you are just libeting, they will send you to the back of the yard like a second class citizen; they call it the beer garden which is just a set of chairs in a gravel corner. It was awful. On top of that, my wife and her friend tried to sit in an outside picnic table but a waitress came promptly demanding that they should leave the table since they were not eating or doing the beer tasting. The waitress attitude was rude and unprofessional. Although bad service like this was uncalled for, we felt that being with our friends was more important than starting an argument with a young waitress.

Beer and Beer

Great small brewery, the ones I had on top were all delicious. Great atmosphere with a friendly staff. Happened to grab a couple of crowler as well.

Great place for excellent beer and fantastic food!

By Scott B |

I've probably eaten here more than 10 times. The chicken always rules so go with that. Everyone loves GN!!!

Fun flights and delicious eats

By 117viniters |

The food looked amazing, but we just had a quick snack (nachos if I recall) - we were really there for a flight and some whiskey. Great spot and excellent ambiance. There are cute lights outside in the back, and people seemed really happy with their meals. Our service was a little slow but they were slammed - popular place! We got what we needed in the end and would definitely go back. The Mac and Cheese looked amazing!

Good Dinner

By OliveOyl2001 |

Huge, tasty burgers. Great variety of beers (some were sweet like blueberry, others more classic IPA). Our son is gluten free and they don't have any bread options for him, but they made a burger naked and he enjoyed the patty. Not my favorite stop on our trip, but we were hungry and the service was quick and fit the bill. They had a little area in the front for our toddler to play, which was nice. Waitress was nice, and it was right around the corner from Salt and Straw ice cream, which was a plus! Recommend if you are in the area, but wouldn't drive out of my way to visit.

Great for the craft beer lover

By interviewtraveler |

They make many great beers, and the food is good too. They're all about the buffalo sauce, but there are other options too. Street parking is very accessible.

Friendly and Tasty

Went with Friends on a Thursday night, walked in sat down and drank really excellent expressions of various IPAs and ate a sensationally delicious fried chicken sandwich that was massive and tasty.

Great food and beer

By MEL17DC |

I enjoyed a flight (5 beers) and a salad with an impossible burger on it. Everything was delicious. We had 4 adults and 3 kids and everyone was very happy. The service was fantastic too. I would definitely go back.

went for beer but preferred the food

By slappy42 |

Trying to differentiate yourself in the craft brew business in Portland is hard. These guys have come up with some unique beverages but I found them too sweet or too bizarre to quaff. The food was very very good though.

AMAZING FOOD AND BEER

By ICECREAMKIM |

Evidently from the photo, we ordered a flight of five consisting of blueberry muffin, grapefruit zest, three way IPA, juice jr. and double stack Blueberry muffin was definitely the best for me, it's a little odd that beer can actually taste like blueberry muffin.... but it's a must. Also ordered the american burger, everything fries, and this other dish that I can't remember the name of.... but it had sweet potato in it. All three of the menus were exceptional and a little heavy, but perfect match with the drinks. Also it was enough for a family of four.

So good!

By Hilary P |

Worth any wait time you are quoted! Great brew, great service, great food! Family friendly! We grabbed a beer while we waited for our table, toys for the kids to play with-we were told 45 min to an hour for a table, we only waited 20.

Not Enough Variety

By TravellingForCheap |

I recognize that many brewery restaurants will change their beer selections frequently, but unfortunately at this time there were LOTS of IPA beers, and LOTS of sour beers. If you love these types of beers, then you'll probably be stoked, but if you like variety, you may find that there is too much emphasis on these types of beers, and a severe lack of other varieties. We always order a flight when visiting breweries like this, so that we can sample a variety. I avoided all the beers that were labelled as sours, and I still ended up with a couple beers that were sour. So there were even more sours than the menu indicated! I enjoyed a Double Stack Stout, which was pretty much like dessert. That was about the only thing that impressed me. In hindsight, their motto of "With a passion for hops, and the patience for sours" should have told me that's what I would be drinking, I just didn't think that would be the majority of the menu. As for the facility itself, it's a nice facility with an open feel. More of an open room instead of individual booths. Nothing wrong with the place itself, and it is centrally located in the Alberta District.

Famous beer in a cool venue

By JimBmore57 |

We did not eat but the Blueberry muffin beer was out of this world. Have a few friends HUGE into the beer scene and this beer is q tough find. Available here. $5 for a pint. Excellent.

Good brews and decent food

By Miriam F |

Friendly tenders share GNs own good brews in comfortable spot in this fun neighborhood. Wish I could remember the name of my favorite stout but you’ll find your own faves here (they’ll have a few guest taps). Food is down Home and solid. Varied enough for many to find an old reliable. It’s a friendly establishment. Outdoor seating very nice when weather permits. Enjoy
