Great food and reasonably priced. My husband and I were there for an early supper. The place is very small but nostalgic. Fun time, good eats.

Great chicken and waffles. Try the red beans and rice as well. Great buttermilk pie. Lunch buffet looked really good.

The inside of this place is set inside an old train car and serves really good food. There are some Portuguese dishes available, but I had a hankering for Chicken Wings (which were amazing) and a medium steak (which was also amazing). We ended up coming here three nights out of our six night stay.

We really liked this place. Out of our 6 days stay in San Francisco, we ate at Grubstake 4 'dinners'. That should speak for it self. Great burgers.

When you're hungry, you're hungry! No matter how late it is, when you crave for some good old meals, you can rely on Grubstake to hit the spot! With great, cozy atmosphere you would expect food and service will follow suit. While food is freshly prepared and full of flavor, the service was not very pleasant. They took the order, and delivered. No service in between until the check is requested. No one cared if we are choking and need water or a drink. They don't even look at our direction so we can wave them to our table. The garlic bread was awesome, the Salsa Verde compliments every dish that we ordered, the Portuguese Pork Chop very delicious but on the dry side, the mushroom appetizer matched with the garlic bread starts a great meal. The burgers were great as well, perfect for that late night craving! Certainly satisfied our cravings for such a late hour... But wished there was a Denny's nearby.

Found this restaurant next to the Holiday Inn Golden Gate Hotel via tripadvisor. The ambiance was not very cozy, no fancy or modern restaurant. The food was reasonable, the steak was fine, not special, along with the toast, fried eggs and the baked potatoes adequately eaten. I wouldn't risk too much, but I must also be honest, I only ate the steak, no burgers or sandwiches

Open until very late. This is a great little place. The staff are really friendly and efficient. The food was good and good value.

We were finding it hard to find a steak house in the area of our hotel until we stumbled upon Grub Stake in Pine Street just off Polk Street. Portuguese owned this a fine little restaurant with a good menu and reasonably priced. Not strictly a steak house but the steak I had was delicious.

Found by accident , first thoughts were looks a bit tired, but once inside, don't judge a book by its cover! restaurant full, staff set up a table for six no problem. Great food big portions value for money, try the loaded potato skins.Would recommend. A typical San Francisco welcome.

we dined here in September 2009 and again in may 2015. both times the whole atmosphere was excellent and the staff very friendly. if we visit San Francisco again we'll definitely return to The Grubsteak to savour (a bit of Portugal in California)

Had a great experience in this restaurant and it looks nice and cosy. We had food here two nights it is a great place to come after a night on the town. They serve good stakes and amazing breakfast so what ever you fancy it s on the menu. They open at 5 pm and stay open to 4am ..fantastic. Also all the waitors are very friendly and it is great value for money

My wife and I were not that hungry. We both ordered a bowl of the homemade vegetable soup and the waiter was nice enough to let us share the pork chops. The portion was big enough for both of us and he gave use two separate plates. The Grubstake is a fun place with good basic food.

What an absolute diamond. Burgers we huge and delicious. Good beer and perfect for families. We thoroughly recommend this place.

Nice place just around the corner of Holiday Inn. The hash burger is a must, the shakes are great and salads are fresh! All over great taste....the prices are a little high though, 14$ for a burger and the fries go extra for 5$ is not a cheap eat though!

We came with a toddler who was very grouchy and very jet lagged. Grubstake was the perfect remedy. Delicious burgers, friendly, tolerant servers, and quick service! Started our trip off right.

This place makes the most fantastic burgers. The Nugget burger is our favorite with sweet potato fries! The Nugget is a quarter pound burger with cheddar or montery jack cheese, bacon and a fried egg! Everything is made fresh, no heat lamps here! When you're in the city, look this place up! You doing be disappointed!

I didnt notice this place, probably I normally pass it during the day. It opens late around 5pm and stays open till 4am. Portugees owners, with home cooked Portuguees specialities on the menu. One part of the restaurant is actually an old converted cable car. (I realized after my second visit...) I liked the burgers best, especially with the french fries, cut with the skin on. Decent food worth a 3-4 star and a 4 star for service and opening times.

Had found this restaurant online under Diner Drive-in and Dives (DDD). It didn't look like much from the outside, but it was clean and cozy inside. The waitress was wonderful. When we first got there were we concerned because there was no one else seated. However that changed by the time we left. Open 23 hours a day, they do a good deal of business late at night. I had a burger which was nice and juicy cooked just perfectly. My husband had spaghetti and meatball. He's Italian and for him to say it was good, you know it was. It's definitely a keeper in my book.

Great little neighbourhood diner in a converted rail car. If you didn't know it was there you'd miss it. Good food, friendly staff and open late! Showing its age a bit but kind of adds to the charm.

The restaurant is small and is a converted cable car carraige. The satff were friendly and offered advice on the menu. The food was very good.

Ne and the wife had to come check this place out . It was on tripple D . Service here was good . Along with the food a great little place to unwind after a fast day . The food here was fast and good .

Because I was staying at the nearby Holiday Inn Golden Gateway Hotel, I stumbled across The Grubstake Restaurant, well, diner may be more accurate although a diner doesn't serve such high quality of food. In addition to the regular items, they have an interesting selection of Portuguese dishes and I have to say, it's the reason I went back the next day for more. Very tasty fish. The service is fine, polite, but the reason to go is the fresh taste, the funky decor, the reasonable prices and a convenient location which sits inside of an actual train car. A San Francisco dining semi-secret. Enjoy!

Great hidden hole in the wall place! The burgers were great. The philly cheesesteaks also looked good. We didnt try one, but it looked awesome! The pork chops were good, but the sides it came with were barely seasoned. Great history to the place also. I would definitely go back.

An excellent , very nice service. The waiter was very friendly. The place is a bit inconspicuous but quaint , typically American. The food was very delicious and very well prepared. We really felt very comfortable.

Our flight was delayed over 4 hours, and it was quite late when we finally made it to San Francisco. Thank goodness my sister lives in SF and is familiar with the area around our hotel (Holiday Inn). She took us to The Grubsteak after we got checked in, around 11:00pm. We were tired and hungry, and the Grubsteak hit the spot!

Just good food and a good price. After trying a few pretentuous places with snotty greeters, im happy to enjoy a comforting yummy meal with smiles from the staff. Classic old school SF, try the portuguese specials

This was close to our hotel (not worth travelling miles to get to this diner) and we had good steaks and wine. The rice pudding is excellent too. There are some Portuguese dishes on the menu as the owners are from Portugal. You sit in an old rail car. A good 'diner' style experience.

First to know!!! They open from 5pm to 4am. The food is absolutely different ive never tried any portuguese dish and this is the place to try something different. The Verde fire Souce is amazing!!! Take a bottle home.

It opens around 4/5pm for dinner and closes at 4am after the early breakfast eaters. Good food, good service, good prices and a good atmosphere.

I had the Caldo Verde (Portuguese kale & potato soup) soup 2 days in a row. It was delicious. The service was a bit slow and not too friendly, but our food made up for it. It's open til 10AM-4AM on the weekends, but only 5PM-2AM during the week...seems like a shame since they serve good breakfast food.

Was a little apprehensive after having read most of the reviews for this eatery. However this is good place to have a meal in rather pleasant surroundings, especially after an 11 hour flight. Our first time in San Francisco (August 11 & 12) and had researched the area around the Holiday Inn on Van Ness Avenue for eateries and the Grubsteak had the upper hand for ease of walking distance. Cannot recall what my wife and I had for dinner, but overall view was that it was good and sustaining. Staff at the Grubsteak are friendly and very helpful towards those of us from the UK in getting the menu right and understanding it to a certain point. That was our first night. Our second in San Francisco posed a problem. Where do we go to eat. We had thought about going to the Dunya on Polk Street, but as we had had a good meal and reception at the Grubsteak we went back for a second evening meal. Yes it was just a good as the first, if not better. Most enjoyable with good vibes and ambience. Also on the plus side, the whole area of the Grubsteak is clean despite the building/street work going on immediately outside. Has got to be a problem with the dust, but not a speck of dust or dirt to be seen anywhere within the Grubsteak or its outside eating area. On both occasions we did not have to wait for a table and that appeared to be the case for other customers as they came in for their meal and/or drink. Not at all crowded which is good. Overall I recommend the Grubsteak as a place to have a good evening meal that does not cost the earth.

Food here is excellent, if you stay at Holiday Inn Golden Gateway this marvellous diner is just around the corner.

Overpriced, full of drunks from the local Polk Street. The only thing good about this place was watch the staff argue with each other. I ordered a burger which both the meat was dry and the bun was stale. The vegetables were last of the bin. A beer and burger set me back $20 with mandatory tip. Avoid. If nothing else is open, you can wait.

We visited because of Guy Fieri's spot on D, D, and D. We had the Portuguese options: wine, soup, pork chops. All wonderful. Nice ethnic feel to this venue. Friendly service.

Reasonable food but so expensive. We originally came here in 2016 and made a special effort to eat here when we returned to the city. No starters or desert and it came to 150 dollars with tip. Eye watering for burger and fries. Virtually empty and I can see why. Hugely disappointed as it was a celebration trip as well.

It opens around 5pm for dinner and closes at 4am after the early breakfast eaters. Had a burger with bacon and a milkshake for dinner. Would recommend it for anyone looking for a late night bite to eat. Good food, good service, good prices and a good atmosphere.

This is a phenomenal place to go if you're looking for a great greasy spoon type breakfast. We loved our meal, we loved the experience.

Awesome midnight breakfast, great prices, and super friendly service. I ordered a standard bacon + eggs plate. Portions were huge and everything was delicious.

Just one of the mouth-watering choices you'll want to spend your entire trip to San Francisco eating! Excellent food, fantastic and friendly staff. Wish they had a branch in Hong Kong, Sydney, Brisbane, London, New York....... Go global!

We were recommended this resturant by someone at the bar in our hotel, so we gave it a try. We were that impressed we went back the next night to have other things we wanted to try from the menu. The staff seemed genuinely interested in us, not just "how are you today" . The food was very fresh and some of the specials menu was quite unusual. We may have to go back again!

The athmosphere was nice, so was the meal. The personal was, unfortunately, pretty unfriendly. But don't try to find it with the Tripadvisor map. The position on the map is about 8 blocks away.

Fantastic. Awesome Philli Cheese Steak. Nice and cozy location. Little travel back in time. Absolutely worth a visit!

Just around the corner from Holiday Inn Golden Gateway in a converted railway carriage.I had a wonderfull steak and my wife had Tillapia.Owner and chef were very pleasant and prices were very reasonable. Opening hours are 5pm till 4am.

I married into a Portuguese family, and I love the cuisine. Grubsteak gets it right. Their Bacalhau a !Gomes de Sa is DELICIOUS. They also have a nice selection of Portuguese wine. Service was friendly and quick. I will be back!

This is a popular friendly diner for both tourists and locals--especially for after hours.

This is an old train car that has been converted into an eclectic, cool burger joint. Basic burgers to ones with a little twist - great selection of draft beers too.

The place is funny and the waiter was friendly. But the food... It might have been the choice of food - but the Philly Cheesestake was very greasy and not really great in taste. The burger was ok but you could have expected more from the price. We ended up paying $180 for 4 people to eat mediocre.

My cousin was able to secure this place for a special event. We are all Portuguese and he wanted all of us to meet the owners and to bring back memories of our childhood. OMG it was awesome. Handmade linguicia and sweet bread. I'd go back for sure.

Staying nearby by we dropped in for breakfast this morning... a great find, warm welcome and great staff followed by awesome food... Will be breakfast stop tomorrow before flying home.

Awesome little place. It is inside an old cable car. We went there for Sunday Brunch and we loved their Eggs Benedict. The place was not crowded. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. Plus YOU ARE INSIDE A CABLE CAR!!!! Definitely a must.

Our family of four ate here on 4th July, and it was a pretty disappointing experience. The food was average, but the service was surly. While we were there several tables of people came in and left as they had waited so long to have their order taken. Our waiter hardly spoke, and even taking our order felt like an inconvenience Toilets a bit grimy..... Won't be back!

Great place within walking distance of the hotel. The food was great and good sized portions, the service was very friendly would highly recommend this place.

We found this restaurant on trip advisor. It was excellent. The burgers were great as well as the service. James waited on us. He was great and attended to us very well. Definitely recommend this restaurant which is a railroad car!

I love this place that was featured on the show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives". Super casual, open late and you can have eggs for dinner (super satisfying for a vegetarian!). My guy loves their burgers (beef). Yummy!

First, I lived in San Francisco for several years in the late 70's and early 80's and was very happily surprised to find that this little gem of a neighborhood restaurant was still open after covid and the many changes in the area. It was always a great place to eat after the bars closed whether you wanted a burger or breakfast. They open at 6:30pm and close at 4am. I was going to make it a point to eat here while on this visit. After a long day of sightseeing on a bus tour of Yosemite National Park I stopped at the Grub Stake for a late meal on the way back to my hotel. I ordered a patty melt on sourdough bread and it as good as I anticipated. The restaurant was not busy and service was prompt. The only downside and detriment was that they require you to pay for your food when ordering. I was a little taken aback by this practice but notices later that there were signs in the restaurant advising you in advance. Overall, the food was good and I was very satisfied. It also brought back many fond memories of the years I lived here and enjoyed this place back then. Thank you Grub Stake for the opportunity to remember some great times I had here so many years ago.

Went here for a couple reasons. 1- it was close to the hotel and we were exhausted from being on the road all day. 2- it was listed on the Diners, drive-ins, and dives list as a good place to eat in San Francisco. The food...it was ok actually no complaints there. But the staff, while friendly enough were way too busy for to only have 2 people working. It took almost 10 minutes for our waitress (the one and only) to bring us waters, even though at the time we walked in we were 2 of 6 people in the place. Our food took forever to come out, and instead of keeping us informed, our waitress was wandering around the restaurant basically ignoring the whole place, because the OWNER/MANAGER called and talked to her for 15 minutes getting updates on the place from what it sounded like. (By this time there were several more customers in the place...being ignored) Who does that? Call at the beginning of the night or the end, but not when you're hitting prime time dinner hours. Although she was nice enough, it was such an annoying experience for us, and I heard others saying the same thing. That I am only giving 2 stars.

Very special burger! Nice and quaint place, friendly staff, egg sandwich and bacon just sensational! Mandatory stop in San Francisco

I have been coming here for 35 years only because I had a Free parking space behind the restaurant for my Limo . And it was only a few blocks from the limo garage . And of course it was open till 4 am . My Limo driving hours had me working till 3 am or more . I picked the restaurant where I got a hot meal . Regardless of hour bad their Service was or how high priced the restaurant was and I always watched this restaurants dirty crooked operations . They would screw customers out of an extra 25% on the final bill . The restaurant never told their customers that they were doing this . You had to be on your best Sharp heals here . They also had some knock down Drunk fights here too where the Cops came and forced their Drunks to break it up . Paying $22.00 for a cheese burger with fries is a really steep price for a Dump like this . And paying $12.00 for a milk shake is a rip off price too . There Phoney Portagese food is out if a Cook book and is thrown together with mostly house spices and flavors . Watch your Possessions here like never leave your leather jacket or a expensive cell phone behind because you will never get them back again . Fernando is now the owner of my $2,000 custom tuxedo because I left it sit on a restaurant chair . It was a Hockey Freeman suit that I had made at the men's Store At The St Francis hotel . JUST BEWARE HERE .

We had a late night arrival to SF. Just wanted a quick bite after a long journey. Awsome burger with all my favourites - avokado, onion rings, bacon... and spinach salad with bacon and vinagrette. Couple of beers. Atmosphere was cosy as this place is rather small. Could come back for breakfast or try the Portuguese food.

The delightful restaurant serving American and Portuguese food, was once an old rail car. The burgers are and shakes are relly very good. Huge portions, with great service. The waitress who served us, was very welcoming and friendly, she gave us lots of tips about visiting the local area, and using the trams. Wouldn't hesitate in recommending this wonderful venue.

Made a special trip over to the Grubstake expecting a killer burger (look at the picture) and according to some reviews. Unfortunately, what we got was an average burger and average service. The place is so unique, an old cable car converted into a diner. Totally cool on the inside, so much potential wasted on average. Lets start with the dinner. Water to start, no straw, had to get up and get our own while waiting to place an order in an empty place. Nice guy shows up, order placed, same order as wife, the Grubstake burger, cooked medium. Shows up cooked the way they wanted it, with a couple of strands of onion, tomato and two pieces of lettuce. Burger was average, nothing special, not bad, but not great either. Beer is overpriced as compared to other restaurants in the city. As I said, so much potential lost in this unique diner. Go if you're in the area, but don't go out of your way.

While staying in San Francisco for three days on our tour we found this hidden gem in Pine Street. It was a three minute walk from our hotel the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway on Van Ness Avenue. The outside appearance does not reflect the excellent cuisine and service received inside. The menu is extensive with also a Portuguese influences on some dishes. We were so impressed that we used this restaurant two nights in a row and informed our fellow travellers about the Grubstake excellent food and indeed many of them used it as well. The prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent in every aspect, my wife said it was the best tuna she had ever had and the steak portuguese I had was superb.

Owner grumpy. Burger really good although could've had better cheese. The burger we split was humongous. It had A1 on it which surprised me but in a good way.fries were decent but my dad made better. Cute atmosphere.

Went on July 27th, there was one waitress working. She smelled of booze and was shaking. Took her 5 minutes to seat us and another 10-15 to take our order. She had slurred speech and was shaking, I could barely understand what she was saying. I asked her about a sandwich that was displayed on their 'specials' board and she looked at me with a confused look and said she didn't even know they served that sandwich, she told me that she only worked weekends and that she could not really tell me anything about it. She then just stood there and looked at me. I ordered something else as it was apparent the conversation about the other sandwich was over. We ordered two sandwiches, and appetizer and a side. While we were ordering another couple came and then left because of how long it took the waitress to get our order. The chef brought us our food but only the sandwiches, we never got the appetizer or the side. We ate our food and during this time the single waitress spent about 25 minutes mixing shakes up for some grub hub guy to take out. In that 25 minutes two other couples came and left as this waitress just stood there and made those shakes. Another guy that was there before us finished his meal and was waiting so long he got up and brought his check up to the waitress and gave it to her and left. He paid cash so that he could leave. I finally had to flag the waitress to come over so we could pay and leave. We told her we only got half our food and she apologized 100 times and showed us that she put the order in, I didn't care about the food at that point I just wanted to leave. She took about 10 minutes to fix the bill and charge us, the entire time the blenders were running on the shakes she was making. The grub hub guy looked like he wanted to kill himself. We paid and left. The food was average. The next day I got another charge on my credit card for some random amount that I now have to dispute with my credit card company. I noticed that another reviewer here mentioned extra charges as well. Oh yea, I'll also mention that apparently they have to charge your credit card to "pre-authorize" you even when just buying a meal. She actually pre-charged me for our meal BEFORE we got the meal.

In SFO for business. Small place around the corner from my hotel. Excellent prices, great menu and beer selection ( probably wine too but I am a beer girl). Burger was cooked perfect. Great char taste. Good conversation with locals. Overall A+++

I stayed at the nearby Holiday Inn, and went 100 steps to get to the Grubstake. Being jet lagged, it was just what I wanted: fast, friendly service. Arrived in 5 minutes... The burger was good, had mine with fried onions. A bit odd with pre-authorizing my Creditcard at 9pm, but hey perhaps that is normal in this neighborhood.

Jet lagged and hungry in the wee hours of the morning. This quaint little place near my hotel is unfortunately one of the very few places to get a meal. Staff are polite and chilled. Probably used to their clientele at that time. Most customers are drunk, a couple of homeless people and same people like me woke up and got hungry. I had a togo burger and it's too late to realize the amount of call in orders that made me at the bottom of their list. Only one waiter taking also phone calls for Togo orders. He was swamped and frequently gets confused of things he was doing. Understand since he was multi-tasking several orders at one time. One bartender was also present but quite busy dealing with loads of drunk customers. The food was good for diner standards. Hats off with staff in handling workload at that time. And there was a homeless person by the entrance quite abusively verbally to customers who won't acknowledge his presence. At 3am that's quite scary if alone.

The food was awesome and the staff was friendly. If you want great food and no fuss you can't go wrong. Will come back next time.

It was a hop skip & jump away from our hotel. We needed some yummy food and drinks to call it a night. This cute diner tucked away beside big building, has quite the menu to fill all of your late night cravings. Most of the menu items come fresh off the grill, i enjoyed the grilled chicken was exactly what i needed. Our food & service was great. The waitress was very friendly and didn't hesitate to answer our question. My husband & i enjoyed our night at Grubstake.

We saw The Grubsteak on Diners, Drive In's and Dives. My husband had the reuben with sweet potatoe fries which he loved! I had the special which was skirt steak with mashed potatoes/gravy and cooked carrots! Everything was great! The waitress was a real gem.

We want to Grubstake for the first time in 30 years and it was excellent. The burgers were very good and the service was excellent. The milk shake was delicious but a little pricey. The sweet potato fries were very good.

Nice place to eat, food was reasonably priced, although when we went in we asked if they did kids portions which they did, then we ordered they didn’t do them on what we wanted ! Food was good and plentiful though all the same

The food is so tasty. You have so many options, it's hard to chose because anytime I'm in SF is nhave to come here and try it all! I can't wait to go back here with my husband and show him what the west coast has to offer. Mmmmm mmmmmmm

We sat there when we've just arrived to SFO, since it was very close to our hotel. We were surprised about how good the food was. Every thing was very fresh and delicious. The menu is very versatile, so anybody can find somthing to eat there. Their wings were super spicy and I loved it. They demand a cradit card in order to open a tab, but in the end you can pay cash if you wish.

We were recommended this restaurant by a San Francisco resident of many years and being so close to our hotel on Van Ness and Pine, we decided to give it a try. The restaurant may not be to everyone's taste from the outside but it was clean, well maintained and had an attractive uniqueness - I think it was converted from an old tram or similar. All 3 of us thought the food was excellent. My Philly cheesestake was one of the best I've had in America. There was also an array of Portuguese dishes on the menu. If you are on a tight budget, the cheap but good quality food would be very suitable but even if you are not, I would still strongly recommend this restaurant. It would give you a 'taste' of San Francisco as many locals patronise this restaurant.

Nice place, warm wood old school design. I had a smoked chicken breast sandwich and sweet potato fries. Everything was great and service was kind and efficiant.

Visited here whilst in San Francisco after reading a good blog (which I now realise is 6years old). The restaurant itself is a bit glum. No customers inside upon arrival. One server behind the bar who put more effort into not speaking to us than actually welcoming us. He spent the whole time we where there with air-pods in. This is the first restaurant where I have ever been asked to leave a swipe of a credit card or pay upfront before I can order. It’s not a takeaway.... The food was very poor. Mozzarella sticks for starter brought out by a member of kitchen staff. They weren’t completely cooked through so not gooey as you’d expect. Two burgers came after, frozen or very poor quality patty. Our drinks arrived after our burgers had. Overall feel they maybe cashing in on glory days gone by. The cheek of the check suggested a 25% tip. I think not!

A great place for a late night dinner or snack. Portions are very large so plan to take home half of your meal. Friendly service, large glasses of wine, a real bargain for very good food.

Visited based on tripadvisor reviews. It's definitely tucked away, and decidedly strange looking as you approach, but go on in for some tasty diner-style food. Husband and I both had variations of their burgers. They were cooked to order, very juicy and tasty. I had the fries, which tasted fresh and the portion was extremely generous. My milkshake was excellent, and my husband discovered a new beer favorite! The staff were attentive. It's near the end of the California cable car line. Very well priced.

Open lots of hours, The Main menu is solid, but the back is just Portuguese. Go for the Portuguese it is very tasty. They have Portuguese house wine that pairs very nicely.

Had the grubsteak burger with sweet potato fries and it was excellent. Really good selection of beers too - I even found a favourite of mine in superbok!

Before our trip to San Fransisco we searched the web for a restaurant to meet up with friends. Our biggest problem was finding somewhere that was still open... Our flight from the UK didn't land until early evening into San Jose giving us an eta to our hotel was around 9. This isn't much time to check in and change when many places close at 10pm !?! We came across Grubstake online... And loved it immediately from the pictures. In reality it lived up to our expectations - we really did have a wonderful evening there. Our friends were already in SF. They met us there around 9:45pm. We ate delicious burgers (the Grubstake) and salad and potato skins. Food was good. Staff were very friendly. The restaurant has a very authentic look and feel. Fantastic local beers helped the night through to 2am !! They did have to remove all beer from the bar at that time... And we were just about ready to leave by then... But they were still open... Just without alcohol. A great place with good food and beer and very friendly staff... and open when we needed them!

We stopped by this place after reading the reviews on T/A. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere cozy. I decided to go with the Portuguese pork chops and they were excellent. My wife had the kale soup and it was also excellent. Nice menu with lots of burgers, but I went to the small part of the menu about the Portuguese items, which I thought was very enticing. They stay open until 4am so you can go before or after a show in the city. We had a great meal and highly recommend it.

We were staying at the Holiday Inn on Vann Ness and were so pleased to find this place a few minutes walk from the hotel. Lovely atmosphere inside with very welcoming staff. Really enjoyed the food and would recommend especially the garlic shrimps.

Grubstake is mainly awesome because it stays open until late, unlike most places in SF. Other pluses include the original style of the restaurant as a cable car replica, and the interesting people you get to see dining in the middle of the night. The food is ok, nothing to write home about-exactly what the name promises: good American grub. The service was terrible, which is why I'm knocking off 2 stars. The dining room was obviously understaffed, and the one waiter who was serving us was very slow, and seemed distracted the entire time. I won't be coming back unless I find myself hungry on Polk street in the middle of the night.

Been out partying? Danced yourself to starvation? Need to make that awesome night out with the hot chick last a little longer? Grab some grub at the Grubstake. Open until 4am! Great food, great service and they have beer! If you don't try it because it doesn't "look cool" you're missing out!

the concierge in the hotel I was using suggested I go to the Grubstake to get a cheeseburger. The restaurant has a lot of ambiance and the food was okay. However, like everything in SF, it is not cheap!! The Grubstake is open until 4AM and it would be interesting to see the late night clientele. I understand there was a lot of history at this restaurant, but I do not think I would retun.

An awesome restaurant with great food and efficient service. The waiter was very friendly and able to process the credit card at my table with a tablet like device. It's a true gem of San Francisco. Visit when you can

It's dark, small but, the flavors from this kitchen are amazing! It's a local hangout and they told us anything on the specials board is good. That made it difficult to choose but, we went with the sole. It was served with the best homemade rice I have ever had. We also heard the Green Wine is worth a try but, we went with the Portuguese Red.

Stopped in for a late dinner as were staying at a hotel around the corner and didn't feel like driving or walking too far. This is a small, quirky little spot on a busy street. Three is our group had breakfast (served all day), and while nothing too special, everything was served fresh and hot. I had the philly cheese steak sandwich, which again was served piping hot on a fresh bun; delicious. Additionally, they do serve a few Portuguese dishes; the cerisho was very good! All is all, a great spot for simple, good and inexpensive food.

How many places can you find that are open from 5PM to 4AM (10AM to 4AM on Saturday). It's small and yes part of it is actually an old train car that's been converted to a dinner. Lots of history on the walls. Menu is full of GOOD food, from daily specials to great burgers. We heard it gets crowded late but we ate early and walked right in. Don't miss it if you are in the neighborhood, we'll go back next time we're in SF.

We went for dinner at this place because we read on our Rough Guide it was good to eat and they serve american breakfast in the evening. We all had a grat dine: very good food, all went perfect. At the end when we got the bill we left the tip to the waiter: checking the bill there was this voice "SERVICE CHGS" that meant the tip was already included. As we didn't know when I asked them for a clarification they were so RUDE and didn't refound us of the double. This is not fair with tourist, even because the place was full of them. So be carefull before paying at the Grubstake

This is a lovely restaurant, you may not think so from the outside but the quality is is excellent. These onion rings were absolutely wonderful. The burger was good, cooked correctly, but the onion rings stole the show, glad I chose it over the fries. Second time at this restaurant, you can't beat the menu, whatever your in the mood for, they have it. Give it a try, it's worth it, even if you look at the outside and think, maybe not, your wrong.

Always an awesome place, been here before and had to write a review this time around. Great tasting food. I had the beef dip and it had great flavor. Went with another couple to get dinner before the festivities of New Years Eve. Wasn’t super busy with customers yet, and the service was quick and friendly. I love to look at the decor inside! I also love that they are open only for the evening late night people so you can get quality food at late night hours.

This is situated around the corner from Holiday Inn, Van Ness. Well worth a visit. The building is an old train carriage. The choice of food was great and all at a reasonable cost. Our waitstaff was John, very friendly.

Just returned from a touring holiday in California. It is difficult it is to eat out and avoid garlic. We tried The Grubsteak, 1525 Pine Street San Fransisco. I explained I have garlic allergy and the owner went to the trouble of phoning his wife at home to double check the sauces she had prepared for the dishes. I settled on a chicken dish served with mashed potatoes - delicious and no garlic. It was so good we went back the next night when I was able to have another garlic free dish. If you are in the area try this place out (no I'm not on commission just pleased to find such a helpful place). My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal too. Can't recommend this place highly enough - good food, lovely atmosphere and very helpful staff

Used to go to the grubstake all the time when I lived in SF. Had not been there in awhile and went to dinner there a week or so ago. Food was not good. Burgers were greasy and stale buns with soggy fries. Place has gone down hill. Left my Hoodie on the Chair at our table and realized I had left it when I got home. Called and was told they had it and would put my name on it and place it in the office for pickup. I went there tonight to pick it up and was told by the manager without his looking for it that it was not there. I asked him to ask the staff about the Hoodie that I had gotten in Pennsylvania at a brew pub that on a special occasion and he did nothing not even try to ask the crew. I told him I would write about the jacket going missing after they said they would have it for me and he actually threw me out very meanly. My wife was in my car outside and I certainly was not going to order a meal after he had stolen my Hoodie. Can't figure out why he actually pushed me out, all the way to the steps. Not only is the food horrible but the manager is a THIEF AND VERY MEAN THIEF AT THAT. I will tell people form now on what a terrible restaurant with liars and thief's running it. How disgusting and mean!!!!! My next call will be to the BBB. When that the Thieving pice of crap grubstake manager wears my Lake Wallenpaupack Brewery, black Hoodie from Pennsylvania, you will see a person who is a low life, mean creep who steals his customers belongings, guess he thought i was from the East Coast and that thief would just rip me off after telling me he would do me right. Creep thief and a jerk!!! Plus food is now crap.

Thieves!! Watch your credit card payments!! Staff added the tip without my permission and then kept talking to me to distract me. And they also took the whole payment again. We might be tourists and a bit tired on our visit but we sussed your fraudulent behaviour and have reported you to the credit card company. Food was nothing to write home about either.

We've been coming here for decades .. and the place just doesn't change. Great burgers with tons of sides. Great list of special that cover meat, fish and chicken. My friends had chicken marsala with scalloped potatoes for $15 that was enough for two. I love the old cable car that makes up one half of the restaurant. extensive wine list .. lots of Portugeuse .. but at $24 or so per bottle, it's a good deal.

I've passed this place thousands of times and never noticed it! One hungry night, when a parking space opened up right outside ( parking is very difficult in this area! ), I decided to stop. It was still bustling, at 10PM. My son and I were delighted to see their very extensive menu and opted to have our meal from their Portuguese selections. I chose Bife Ă Portuguesa com Ovo a Cavalo - Sauteed Rib Eye Steak Marinated in RedWine and Garlic with a Fried Egg - the flavor was excellent but the steak, itself, was a bit tough. My son ordered the Bacalhau Cozido Com Todos - Boiled Codfish with Potatoes, Vegetables and Hard Cooked Egg. He had never eaten bacalao ( one of my favorites ) and pronounced it "very good". He had a Portuguese beer and I drank a red Portuguese wine which was decent. I would definitely recommen the Grubsteak, especially as a late night dining alternative to Chinatown. It's rare to find a restaurant that stays open until 4AM!!

It was a big disappointment when a member of the staff told me that they were closed. I went there during lunch hours(1pm).

This little diner has an amazing atmosphere which was very unique. Its waitstaff were very entertaining and polite. The olives on one of our dishes were grown by a man who worked there! Everything we ordered was fantastic and the wine selection was great and reasonably priced. They make their own hot sauce in house and it was fantastic. I bought a bottle to take home!

If you are going here you gotta go all Portuguese. Get the Portuguese breakfast. If you are up to eat at breakfast, get the Portuguese beer, Sagres. And if you can handle spice, put the home made salsa verde all over that breakfast!

Grubsteak is a strange place. Its décor belies the quality of its food which is excellent. It only has one steak option which tasted excellent and is highly recommended. (For me) another excellent recommendation is its selection of craft beers not to mention its ice crème sundries. In summary- a good very reasonably priced meal.

We went here because we had seen the place on Diners, Drive Ins and Drives with Guy Fieri. We were not dissapointed The restaurant is part built from an old railway carriage with some fun murals on other walls The burgers were excellent. The roast chicken also got a thumbs up. There are also Portuguese specialties that are worth exploring. The wines are well chosen and there is a great selection of local brews. The service was also very good

Left the bar after 130 am and was looking for a place to get a bite to eat. Fortunately, Grubstake was nearby. Tiny place but the food was pretty good and was served quickly.

Have enjoyed The Grubstake for 30+ years. Best burgers served with inimitable attitude that only this diner can offer. Delicious food in an ambiance that does not take itself or its visitors too seriously. Consistently enjoyable. The Grubstake serves from 5:00PM to 4:00AM. Sitting at the counter has always been our favorite. Many thanks!

Had the Philly cheese steak c/w fries and salad. Home made blue cheese dressing the best ever. In house chilli sauce nuclear! 2 glasses of Portugese red and home made flan for desert. Nice expresso to finish. Nom Nom!

The main positive about this venue is that it stays open late. The food was decent but nothing startling. Had a nice pumpkin pie for desert as the waitress claimed they were famous for it.

Place was full so we decided to try it on the basis that full meant locals liked it. We didn't know what to expect. We got friendly staff and Portuguese food although there was plenty of regular diner fare on the menu. We also had a glass of Portuguese wine and port to finish. Food was excellent but service was slow as they were understaffed - we'd definitely go back. Food and wine very reasonably priced The restaurant is just round the corner from the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway

Touted to be the best burger in SF. It was very good. Parking is an issue. An old railroad car is the setting. Cute. Not the cleanest place I've been to. But we did enjoy our visit for the fun of it.

Located near the Holiday Inn and a unique sort of venue like a train but not a train kind as weird but the food and service is pretty good.

The Grubstake on Pine Street is a Great place to go after the bars close. The food is pretty good, but sometimes can be on the greasy side, still that's not a bad thing after a night of drinking, it will help you sober up. Prices are slightly high if you want a New York Steak, but in the middle of the night it's great to have that option. Staff is quick and efficent. They also specialize in Portuguese food, which id spicy and good and have portuguese beer to wash it down with. Grubstake is an oasis in town when you are looking for a late night place to eat. They are open till 4 a.m. Try to get there before the bars close or you may be waiting in line.

Iconic railway carriage serving Portuguese American food. Cosy yet atmospheric. Best Caesar Salad and cheesecake, yet a small selection of portuguese delicacies.

It's an attractive restaurant because of its quirky design. Food was perfectly OK but nothing to excite. I might have been put off by the language coming from a group of four at the bar. Worth a visit - but probably only one.

We try to go to a Triple D location when we go on vacation and we usually like Guy's recommendation. This place was the exception. Service was deplorable - one server that was completely frantic. The food was super pricey for a diner and the food wasn't that great. We had hamburger, shrimp appetizer, portuguese wings and chicken fingers and our bill was over $100.

We were staying at the Holiday Inn near The Grubstake, so it was very convenient. It's located in a boxcar, which was neat. The restaurant was a little dark and dingy, to me! The waitress/server/bartender was really nice, although she was coughing without covering her mouth (I notice things like that, because I work in food service and I'm a germophobe). Anyway, the burger made everything ALRIGHT! If you want a good burger, this is your spot! Also, the grilled shrimp appetizer was superb!

I was told by some acquaintances that live in San Francisco that this little hole in the wall portugese restaurant has really good food. Well...they were right, the food was absolutely delicious. I tried the Caldo Verde Soup "kale soup" with potatoes and linguica. You could just tell as you savored each spoonful the love and care that went into making this soup. I also enjoyed a mixed green salad and it was very good. The breakfasts looked yummie and very large portions. I can't wait to return and try the boiled codfish and other mouthwatering items on the menu.

The food here is absolutely fantastic! From classic greek specialties to burgers and breakfast comfort food, you can find it all at Grubstake, even at 2am. Everything was fresh, hot and tasty.

I stumbled on The Grubstake the first night of my trip to San Francisco. I had lost track of time wandering around Fisherman's Wharf and realized it was getting late and I was hungry. After a quick Google search for local late night dining, I decided on this spot due to its quirky setup in an old train car and appealing menu. I later found out it was featured in Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. I ordered the California Chicken sandwich which was very good. This was a really great find and a great first meal in San Francisco!

Burgers are so tasty and fat enough to don't make a mess around. The wide selection of beers is definitely the high point of the place. Staff was kind and friendly. I feel lucky of stumbled upon it.

Food is delicious and waiter is a gentlement. If you feel hungry at late night this is the place to go. An hidden gem in the city!

Husband and I have visited Grubstake several times in the last few years. We were lured initially because of seeing it on Diners, Drive ins, Dives, on the "One of a Kind" episode. It is a unique experience. An old railway car, brightly decorated inside, cheerful and cozy setting. Hours are from 5 pm to 4 a.m., it definitely would be a good place to have a burger or a plate of eggs after a fun night out on the town. We went each time around 5 pm, soon after it opened, so not that crowded. We order from the Portuguese Corner, and we have our favorites. My husband loves the costeletes de porco alentejana (flavorful porkchops), I love the camarao con malho de alho (garlic shrimp), and the caldo verdhe soup (kale, potatoe, linguica soup). We usually order Portuguese wine to complement our entrees, though there is a full bar. Typical American diner menu with interesting Portuguese additions, daily specials written on board, friendly staff, definitely a unique experience.

A large group of us came here for dinner having just arrived in San Francisco following a 10-hour flight from the UK, on the recommendation of our tour manager.Good decision, right up my street! Very friendly, informal, relaxed, atmosphere in interesting, quirky surroundings - dining in a preserved railway boxcar in a city centre, especially as we were on a rail based tour! Food was really yummy and good value - a nice way to start our holiday in the States in this lovely city!

This is a lovely atmospheric restaurant and bar housed in an old railway carriage. Friendly staff and cosy atmosphere. Wide range of bottled beer and a traditional menu also with a Portuguese twist. Loved the roast chicken, burgers, salmon and ny steak.

Very friendly atmosphere in this restaurant. The philly cheesesteak with onionrings came just in a while after I ordered! All of this spending less than 20 bucks!!!!

A Portuguese steak house with a nice relaxed atmosphere on Pine Street just off Van Ness Avenue it was once a railcar and you can still see the roof of the car in the bar. I had a great steak and a decent bottle of wine for a reasonable price. The place does other things besides steak and although I didn't try any thing else others in the group did and liked what they had.

Visited the grubstake during a visit to San Francisco after finding it on google maps. The food is amazing, cooked to order and delivered fresh as can be! We shared the mozzarella sticks with a homemade marinara and each had a burger, both of which were great, we also shared sweet potato fries. A great range of beers and a glass of water topped off the visit. Such a nice change from the mass produced chain restaurant food! Get down there and support an independent business!!! 👍🏻

Set in an old carriage the Grubsteak has a humble exterior that belies the quality of its fayre and the friendliness of its service. We ate two excellent meals there and were really impressed with the friendly, informal atmosphere. Would highly recommend.

Stayed nearby at the Holiday Inn, stumbled into this restaurant I was blown away by the quality of the food. Don't let the dining area or the snarky staff scare you away. Server warmed up, but got a pretty chilly reception when I entered. I almost got up and walked out, glad I didn't it was worth the trouble.

My boyfriend and I picked this restaurant be cause he is a huge fan of trying spots recommended on Drive Inn's Diners and Dives. This spot did not disappoint. We had the famous pork chop, and the chicken wings. The pork seemed like it had been brined for days- in a good way! Completely tender and delicious. We also loved the wings- fall off the bone tender. The staff was very friendly. It is a pretty busy and popular place in a friendly neighborhood setting. We would definitely recommend it, and would eat there again!

We visited as this was right around the corner from our hotel. Upon being seated before ordering anything, we were immediately asked for a credit card for “preauthorization”. I could understand this at night time when people are drunk (common in this area) but at 1 pm? Anyway, we ordered two salads (which were nothing special) and the bill was over $40 before tip. I would not return as it was nothing special.

My father recommended this place after seeing it on the TV and it was within walking distance of our hotel. The menu immediately had me interested as it was my kind of food. The meal was fantastic made even better by the interesting decor inside a train carriage. My burger was brilliant and the family also loved their own dishes with the Portuguese twist. The place wasn't busy when we entered but we were under the impression that it could become so as seating was limited. The waiter was a really nice guy and looked after us the entire time. Recommended immensely!

Great food well cooked and presented at competitive prices, all served with style. We were a large party (over 30) but the service was still fast and fun.

We went to Grubstake our last night and boy we hit the grand prize. The staff was friendly and the food was awesome. We've been to much fancier places but the food here were better by far. If your close by you can't go wrong if you want good food and no fuss.

picked this because of Guy Fieri DDD, it as ok, felt a little rushed because of parking ( garage closed at 10:00p)... food was good reassonable, large portions... if your are a beer fan skip the portuguese Beers...

Wanted to try this because it was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and it was right near our hotel. It had only late hours but it was quirky and fun, in a converted rail car, and we were hungry at midnight, so we checked it out. Good food, and good prices.

Hidden away in Vine Street it looks a little odd from the outside and rather "shabby", but don't be put off it is a charming restaurant inside - adapted from a 1927 cable car. There is always a good list of specials on the whiteboard, often with a Portuguese twist, alongside more traditional US dishes. They don't have a liquor licence, but sell bottled beer and good house wine (Portuguese) at $20 per bottle. Prices are very reasonable indeed - typically $10 - $14 for the main and quality is surprisingly good. Give it a try if you're in the area!

I've been before, a couple of years ago, but this time Grubstake wasn't as good and I don't think it lived up to it's quite good Trip Advisor ratings. I chose the Bife a Potuguesa at $19.50. The steak was poor quality with several hard-to-chew bits of gristle. The vegetables hadn't been drained very well so there was quite a bit of water on my plate. If I ever go back I'll stick to the burgers!

After having been to Grubstake three times, I'm finally prepared to write a review. If I'm being honest, that's because this is the first time I can actually REMEMBER my dining experience at Grubstake. I've only ever dined at this classy establishment between the hours of 2A and 4A, so the first two times were more than a little blurry. Now, I consider this place a late night staple. It's open until 4A and is the go-to spot for every hungry local after a long night out. It's hard for me to think about heading here for lunch or dinner (or any normal meal, for that matter), but I think they're open all day. In any case, if we're talking food and service, this place is a 3 star joint. Since they're open until 4A and take care of my late-night cravings, though, it automatically gets bumped up to the next level. Plus, they were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Automatic legitimacy. There is literally ZERO competition for late-night food. I don't know any other places in the area that are open past 2A . A friend and I split the grilled cheese and tuna melt and were very content with our order. Again, I probably wouldn't go in for an afternoon meal, but for late night, this place hits the spot! They also have a Portuguese menu (a bit random, but cool) that looks pretty good if you're a meat eater. It's cash only, so come prepared. Also, depending on the hour you pop in, be prepared for a wait. We've waited 45 minutes before, but they're pretty good about getting people in as quickly as possible!

This place is the real deal. Good hearty Portuguese and American food, open late, and fully authentic. We admire the Black Bean Soup enough to drive across town for it, and The Nugget (burger with fried egg on top) is sure to satisfy the most ravenous appetite. We make it a point to visit regularly, and will often take out-of-town guests here when we know they're really hungry. Check the specials board when you go in. There's probably something delicious cooking.

After leaving a fun late night karaoke session, my friends and I wanted some food. I wanted breakfast while others wanted lunch. We found this location which stays open until 4am. Our server was great and the Bartender was very friendly. The space is small and quaint. I've added this place as a Go To for late night dinner/breakfast.

This small place is an old railway dinning car over 100 years old with a bar made from a sunken ship in the Bay. The food is good and there is a hugh range of bottled beer, although no draft beer. The service was excellent from our friendly waiter James and loved the quirky décor which added to the atmosphere.

Visited back in November of 2011. It was a weeknight. I used to enjoy coming here, but when I went with my friend- the service was terrible. Myself, my friend were the only customers in the place- as our experience went on, I began to see why. It was pointed out on the menu by my friend that they charged you if you wanted to share your meal with your friend, charged for refills. when our food finally arrived, it wasn't tasty at all and to make it worse, they were mixed. I got my friends sandwich and my friend got my burger. Terrible, won't be back.

Great service for sure. We loved the atmosphere and the menu was great. Chicken wings were a hit and the NY Steak sandwich was great. Will be back for another go !

It was a neat experience. It was out of the way from tourists and the food was good. So glad we decided to go there for dinner one night. Service was awesome, out waitress was great.

Went here because it was close to the hotel, and it was rated by Guy Fieri. It was awkward. The place is really small with only about 12 tables total and like three booths. The waiter takes your order and you pay at the same time (before you get food). This is nothing special but was dark and old, and dingy. The food wasn't great at all. I guess that review from Season 2 (like 2008) from Diners Dives and Drive Ins is still pulling customers.

Cute little place close to our hotel. The wings eere superb! Also the salads are ginormous and very tasty. Would definitely go there again !

Arrived in SFO on a very late flight and found this place was open till 4 am. Good menu selections, with awesome burgers, sandwiches and the NY steak nicely grilled. I chose to get the vegetables and grilled potatoes which were very good. At that late hour, it seemed populated with locals enjoying a late dinner or snack after a late night out and several take out orders went out while I was there. Old diner style decor, but don't let first appearances fool you, its good and I will be back.

Tremendous recommendations and friendly vibe were backed up by amazingly delicious food. Wings, wings, and more wings! Portuguese menu also an absolute must.

Nice little restaurant hidden from plain sight. Our taxi driver drove past looking for it so keep your eyes peeled. We arrived about 10 mins before it opened as we hadnt noticed how early it was. The server (possibly the owner) was happy to serve us immediately all the same. We both ordered steak which was cooked to our liking with optional extras too. Mine was medium rare, juicy and tasty. The potatoes, i'm told by the server, are excellent and a good choice. Although tasty, they weren't anything special in my opinion. I had a root beer float to finish and was tasy but not much can go wrong with a float. All in all i'm not dissappointed and feel it was great value for money.

We found this purely by chance. Not a tourist spot, but plenty of choice restaurants around. They are welcoming and the service is very good. A varied range of dishes at affordable prices. The staff are friendly, so this makes this place well worth a visit.

We tried this little place as was local to our hotel and saved us going back into town, was probably the best meal of our trip! Great service, great quality food and great value!

Stumbled upon this gem on our first night in San Fran, wow a genuine old tram turned into a truly atmospheric restraunt, food and service impeccable - prices reasonable, I had the Grubstake special burger - brilliant, I can quite honestly say - we used this place a few times and took friends - possibly one of the best resteraunts in my case worldwide - I've been about. It a great place, serves food until 4am - a Portuguese influence and it works - well done Grubstake - I know where I'll be eating if I ever get back to your great city. PS my wife lived this place and that says a lot. 10 out of 10.

Okay. We had high expectations. We took a $40 uber over to get the food and the experience. The burgers were fair. Not amazing by any means. The fries are again... ok. The service. Not bad. Not good. But strange. Under the influence maybe? We went early. Not late. It wasn't busy. Our kids didn't even like the milkshakes. Tasted just like McDonald's frosties. Big disappointment on our last night in San Fran!!!!

Was looking for late night food n didnt want any of fast food or Dennys type places. Google showed this place near by as open till 3am. Well, glad I found it, even saved as my favorite place in SF in maps. Burger was off the hook, soup was as good as it can be in tje City and even fries was good. Good place even with kids or groups, nicely located not far from downtown and loved an idea of converted old train car :)

Came across this restaurant since it was near the hotel we were staying and it was open late at night. Two things caught our eye - it was open till 4 am every day and they served Portuguese cuisine (because the chef was from Portugal). The food was delicious and prices were reasonable. Decor was a bit run down and I guess it needs a renovation

Great, friendly group of employees running the place as a team. The environment is super cool; the restaurant is made of cable cars! The food was hot and came out blazing fast. It is a late night place so it can be noisy but it is super fun and they have a really unique menu that covers everything from steak to sandwiches to breakfast and even a Portuguese section! They have a Portuguese white wine that is to die for. If you are looking for a late night meal (they are open until 4am!) in an awesome environment, you won't be disappointed!

Grubstake is one of those fantastic little finds you could walk right past without even noticing! It's billed as a Portuguese American restaurant, but don't let that confuse you. They have a fantastic menu of traditional American favorites (burgers, steaks, chops, salads, chicken, etc.) with a Portuguese flair. Now, Grubstake isn't one of those fancy SF restaurants, but a quaint little place, which used to be a SF railcar...before it expanded a little. The food is what it's about at Grubstake...not the fancy decor. There's all kind of atmosphere and vibes here. The tables are set pretty close together, so you can often become part of your neighbor's conversation, which can be fun! Definitely give Grubstake a try! You won't be disappointed...unless you arrive before they open, which isn't until 5pm throughout the week!

SF turns to a ghost towen once that clok hot 12:00 If you still hungry and trying to catch aomething open, this might be the place. The food is simple and quick.

Little Portugese based restaurant with loads of character and obliging staff serving great food and drink. Obviously very popular with locals given the regular flow of customers.

A great choice!! Certainly worth the trek. Great service great atmosphere and history and most if all great food! If you are in San fran make the effort to find this place, you will not be disappointed!!!!!!!! I know I will be craving this food for years to come!!!!!

Local neighborhood restaurant where there are 100 tap beers, Portuguese specialties, and a variety of dishes that would satisfy the pickiest eaters. Prices were good. Service was excellent. We came with toddlers and they welcomed us heartily.

A hidden gem, worth seeking this quaint, railway sleeper, restaurant out. Although on the surface an American diner with all the usual choices, also has a Portuguese menu for more unusual choice (excellent prawns!) very popular so prepare to sometimes wait. Good quality food. Open from 5pm until 4am so handy when you've missed the usual restaurants.Closed on a Monday and Tuesday though.
Great place, and novel experience
My husband and I dined here for dinner with our 3 year old. Food was great, staff were friendly and happy to make suggestions of food for us to try. They had a wide selection if craft beers - we went for Anchor Steam, a local SF lager (very nice). Even chatted to a server who'd lived in our part of the UK as a child - small world.
