Just say no! Horrible service, waiter was very rude. No refills on drinks no stop at the table to see if we need anything else wants food was brought . Food was OK not very many choices, overpriced for what you get. And I won't even go on and on about the loud silverware swinging and overall intolerable ambience.

Come here every once in a while and they have tasty Mexican plates. Quick service so you can have a quick eat here. Recommended

Best life decision in a long time! Carlos brought tasty samples to the table. Flavor feast of the best kind! Oscar, our waiter, was great too & so patient & explained the menu. Tried new specialities & loved, loved, loved the food!!! Dessert- heavenđ Wished I lived closer to come once a week.

We stopped here by chance on the way to the airport to return back to the cold north. We didn't have any expectations, but we were pleasantly surprised. What we did notice immediately was that the menu was not Tex-Mex and more like what my wife and I have seen in Mexico City. Three of us had no complaints. I was surprised to read the negative reviews after we left. Our top suggestion would be either the mole verde or the mole poblano. Both were flavorful and might me the best that I've tasted.

Towing Signs are not easily visable!!! â at Guajillo's - The Shortcut to Mexico.

This is real mexican food restaurant, every single dish tastes like being in Mexico. Everything I have tried here IÂŽve liked.

Our family of 4 has been going to Guajillos regularly for over 10 years and our favorite dishes are the Al Pastor, Pork Chuleta tacos and the "Gringa." We were shocked when we went a couple weeks ago and heard that they have taken these items, as well as all their tacos, off the menu. We promptly stood up and left. I hope the owner reads this and makes some changes. Guajillos was our one and only Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. Please bring the tacos back!! (I would have normally given you 5 stars but the 2 stars reflects my dissatisfaction in you removing our favorite menu items)

We stopped in for dinner on a Sunday evening. The place is obviously a local spot, with homemade wooden booths and signs that forbid kids from running and screaming. The service was friendly and fast. The food was delicious. It was nothing like a major chain. I presume it was more authentic Mexican and less Americanized. Every bite was wonderful.

Our family is part Mexican and did not find food at this restaurant to be authentic or particularly flavorful. It is located in a very busy part of town and quite a chore to find, fighting traffics coming and going. The lighting inside of the restaurant is ghastly, not a good place for date nights. Service is good.

This is the second time I have come here and the food is delicious with fresh ingredients. I had the Azteca soup and it is a meal in itself. The nopalito salad is fresh and healthy and spicy. The pollo con mole is rich in flavor and the tortillas are great.. I liked the order of the taquitos with corn tortillas. I will definitely return to savor more of the authentic traditional plates.

We were passing through San Antonio and I had heard good things about this restaurant and decided to check it out. We had the lunch special for $6.75. We chose the torilla soup (very spicy) and I had the beef tortillas with beans and rice. My husband chose the pork dish. We were both very pleased. We had room to split a flan, and it was exceptional--creamy, with the right blend of caramel . We will be back.

The place itself is not that nice inside but the food and service make up for it. Our server was the nicest, friendliest guy. He gave us tips on where to visit in San Antonio. The food was really good! Highly recommend it.

Don't go here in search of burritos and enchiladas cause Guajillo's does not have them. What they do have are Mexican dishes you have not had before, and many of them are outstanding. Dined here recently while traveling, once for lunch and once for dinner. Both times really good. Not fine dining - just a small casual place - but food is authentic and service is really quick. Food comes out in a few minutes from ordering. Lots of hispanics dined here and some were waiting for the restaurant to open at lunch time - both good signs. Inexpensive, too.

I was excited to try the fish ceviche, it sounded good on the menu. The waiter brought me what looked like a shrimp cocktail so I sent it back. When I was served my ceviche, it looked nothing like what ceviche is supposed to be like. Ceviche is not made with tomato sauce. At least not in the hundreds of times I've had it have I ever had it that way. My youngest daughter ordered tacos de bistek. The tortillas were cold and hard. Not pleasant. My other daughter had the fideo soup. Soup usually has some vegetables or at least some cilantro if you're saying your restaurant is a short cut to Mexico. Bland is all I can say. My husband was neither happy with his shrimp cocktail. He said it was way too watery. Last but not least, my other daughters milanesa plate was actually the only thing that tasted alright. The place was nice, easy to get to, and the wait staff were very friendly and very pleasant. My daughters Margarita was very, very good. I'm not a negative person but I did feel like this restaurant was not what we expected.

Bistec tacos were. Chile Relleno came very quickly. The rice and beans were cold and the waiter's explanation was "they were made fresh today". So? They're still COLD. Chile Relleno was stuffed with a very small amount of white cheese (zero meat, no raisins or almonds) & a very THICK, soggy, doughy breading for $9.95. I asked for butter for the tortillas (which appear to be packaged) and the server said they don't serve butter or margarine. Excuse me? I've never seen a restaurant that did not serve butter. Candidly, the way-below-average meal was a major disappointment.

Don't come here for enchiladas or nachos, you won't find them - which is good, stay on the river walk for that. This was fanastic/authentic Mexican - soups, simmered chicken and beef with wonderful sauces. Tacos al pastor were fantastic. Worked great with our family - we were the only non Spanish speakers from what we coudl tell. Server was very accomodating/kind.

This is not a restaurant that is close to where we live; however, we were in the area. Parking is very tight. If you cannot find parking in the front, there are spaces in the back but larger vehicles could block the narrow driveway. Lunch specials are well-priced. I love ceviche so I ordered the combination fish (cod) and shrimp, for $8.95. The taste was a little heavy on the ketchup and I would have used more lime juice. It had a nice little kick of chile serrano. Each lunch special comes with your choice of either caldo de fideo (fideo or vermicelli) or tortilla soup. We both ordered the fideo soup, with is in a beautiful broth. We very much enjoyed this soup. I ordered the al pastor (a spicy seasoning using achiote) and my husband ordered pork milanesa. Both plates include rice and beans. The rice was just okay but I did like the refried beans. The pork al pastor comes on four small, corn tortillas and melted cheese. This was a new presentation to me. Unfortunately, the al pastor was not the spicy, mouth-watering taste that I am used to. Any of the Taquerias around San Antonio serve this delicious plate. The milanesa was tender. Unfortunately, it did not have much flavor. We ordered the flan, which is made in-house. It was very good, nice and creamy.

Very flavorful authentic Mexican food. Complimentary chips and salsa--chips were not too remarkable, but the guajillo chili salsa packed some heat tonight. I tried Albondigas en Salsa Chipotle, hand rolled meatballs with rice and eggs in Chipotle sauce with rice and beans. It came with corn tortillas. It was very flavorful and satisfying. Servers are very attentive. If you like Mexican food, you'll enjoy Guajillo's.

This popular restaurant specializes in Mexican cuisine from the interior of Mexico as opposed to Tex-Mex food that is readily available at many restaurants in San Antonio.

This is the first time me and my husband tried authentic Mexican food and we were not disappointed. We got lucky and went during lunch and they have weekday lunch specials and we were both able to get a soup plus a meal for $6.95 per person. Now you really can't beat that. Of the two soups they offer definitely try the Fideo. We had a great server who was cheerful and happily recommended stuff to us. Definitely go there hungry and you won't be disappointed.

we don't like real spicy food but we love Mexican. The waiter suggested a couple of dishes and they were delicious. Better than most.

My friend and I stopped by Guajilloâs for lunch on our first day in San Antonio. As the name states, this is true Mexican cuisine. That means no queso, no flour tortillas, and to my friendâs dismay no mild salsa. I enjoyed the spicy salsa which I believe was habanero based. The steak, cheese, and corn tortilla dish was magnificent! The steak was grilled perfectly and there was a generous portion. The guacamole was good; however, I would have preferred less cilantro. Overall, I really enjoyed this restaurant as I love authentic Mexican cuisine; however, those who dislike spicy foods may be disappointed.

After eating in a highly rated, but average (at best) mexican restaurant on the riverwalk the night before, we drove across town and took a chance on Guajillos..WOW. Nothing fancy, nothing haute cuisine but THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD I'VE HAD. We had the Mole Verde Con Pechuga de Pollo, the Mole Poblano chicken and the Chilaquiles de Bistec. My moöe pobalno was otstanding. Everything was fresh and well prepared. Just a great out of the way family eatery.

I use to go often with my wife and kids but this is the last time. The waitress dropped the menus but we noticed that she picked up orders from other tables that arrived later than us, then i noticed that other guests were friends of the manager ( that is a common practice in Mexico) We order a chile relleno and tacos but the waitress ask us if we want from the âhappy hourâ so we said yes, is ok. I never try to save money or try to pay less because when you go out for dinner, you have to spend to satisfy your appetite. When i got my chile relleno it came out with no rice or bens, not even tortillas, so what is the reason of the âhappy hourâ? My wife tacos were cold and just little âextra quesoâ that she ordered on her tacos. We had to order rice, beans and tortillas for my âchile rellenoâ that was just bland and with little cheese inside besides that it was cold, my wife tacos were cold too. We used to like there but never ordered from that âstupidâ happy hour menu that the waitress offered to us. Also the tortillas never came on time. She brought the tortillas to the table when i finish my plate. Many or all of the Mexican restaurants offered a âdaily specialâ menu but they provide you the same plate, they don't reduce portions or eliminate items, you eat good for $1 or $2 dollar less. Then when i told the waitress that everything was bad and that we had a bad experience, she said âok, talk with my manager, he may give you a discountâ ( I felt so humiliated with those words) we never expect to get a discount. When we approach the âmanagerâ he said how was everything? Then we tried to explain the problem and he just said âsorry guys, im busy. Have things to doâ and walk away.........seriously? We never ever will return there sny more, never.

Enjoyed an amazing meal here and will definitely be back! The place was quite crowded even though it was after the lunch "rush" time... always a good sign. Charming server chatted with us and made food recommendations that were terrific: cactus salad, mole verde and el pastor tacos. Everything tasted delicious. It's no wonder why when we asked a local to recommend a restaurant with authentic Mexican food, he told us this is his favourite. Thanks for the tip!

We have been eating at Guajillo's since it first opened. The food there is not your typical TexMex, it is Mexican. Since we moved out of San Antonio we do not get to visit as often as we did in the past, but we still make it a point to hit Guajillo's whenever we need a Mexican food hit while we are in San Antonio. It is so good I recommend it to all of the out of towners that visit San Antonio.

This restaurant does not offer a quaint or showy. or elegant ambiance. I won't have chosen it for a business meeting or anniversary celebration. However, the food is good and it feels almost home-cooked. The service is quick and efficient, with a smile, though. Menu is relatively expansive. Prices do not exceed your average price list level. Meet balls are good!

Hmmm! Soupy, Hot Fideo Soup for a cold or rainy day! An Excellent Choice for a meal and Highly Recommended! Not too spicy and cures all ills! Aztec soup was interesting! I also recommend the complimentary chips served with salsa and lemons! For dessert Arrozo con Leche-an excellent choice and so is the pastel de tres leches! Attentive service, close to Double Tree, North Star/North Park Malls, Catheral Bookstore, Container Store, Samm Moon, and Lakeshore!

Had lunch here on a visit to San Antonio, this place is right near the airport so we stopped here first thing after we arrived. Our server was extremely friendly and made recommendations. I really enjoyed the salsa that came with the chips, as others have said it is extremely spicy! I also tried the nopalitos salad with was excellent, as well as the cochinita pibil. Husband had the mole. Everything was delicious. I highly recommend this place if you want something different the average Tex Mex. This is real Mexican food and it is really delicious.

What the heck is going on?!? These reviews that gush how wonderful the food is?? Not so anymore. Managment has left the building. If you want over cooked sauces the literally overflow your plate so much so that you need swim trunks to eat there then by all means head on over. The decline in food quality has taken a sharp turn for the worse over the last year. I remember having wonderful meals accompanied by pleasant service but those days are a distant memory. We have gone by on several occasions (2) recently and were greatly dissatisfied on each one. The "top shelf" margarita tasted (and looked) like it was made from a box mix, the "house speciality's" entree's were pitiful in the lack of depth- example: Mole Poblano / Chicken Breast with Real Poblano Mole Sauce- is just a hard, over-cooked chicken breast on a plate, drowned in a really smelly mole sauce and some very bland rice & refried beans. All yours for $9.95. Yea!!! Then there is the Bisteces en Chile Pasilla / Thin Sliced Steak in Pasilla Pepper Sauce- same thing -- just change the chicken for some cheap piece of mystery meat and swap the mole sauce with a really bad pepper sauce and you have it. Thank you for another $9.95!!! There is much better Mexican Food in this city for better prices. Keep driving.

While in SA, I've eaten here twice already (being close to the airport helps) because they serve Mexican dishes that most other restaurants don't. The first time I ordered cochinita pibil and the next time I ordered mole verde (green mole) and I loved both. You don't find these in most Mexican restaurants.

A good Mexican restaurant doesnât serve you pinto beans from a can! Donât ask for Enfrijoladas! The server was nice, she got a good tip. They serve a lot of cheap quality food. They donât seem to have enough staff.

Salsa is the bomb ! The lime is for the salsa! Squeeze at least two wedges into the salsa and mix well before you start dipping the chips. Love love this place whenever I miss Mexico I come here ! Everything is fresh and authentic Mexican cuisine ! Aztec tortilla soup hits the spot everytime

I've been coming here when I visit San Antonio for the past 7 years and I'm never disappointed. No one makes cactus salad like these guys, and the mole sauce is to die for. The salsa is very special and spicy- not your typical canned tomato salsa but a wonderful blend of fresh ingredients. This hole in the wall is the real deal and I like ok forward to it always- usually my first meal after getting off the plane.

I had someone bring me some takeout from this place before and I remembered it being pretty good. I wish I would have read the more recent reviews before going. Huge let down. While the spicy sauce was great, and the one margarita was good as well. Those are the only things I can say good about this place. They were not that busy, and we were sat all the way in back room. Waiter was unkempt and even though they were slow, he hardly ever came to our table. He let drinks run out. We had to track him down , like physically get up and find him to get something. The chips were hard, stale and have to be store bought. Just not what you expect. The food was horrible. The rice tasted like rice a roni and had a weird consistency and the re-fried beans tasted charred and were gross. I did not finish my plate at all. People who say this is authentic Mexican food must have no experience with authentic Mexican food at all. Save yourself some time and aggravation, and pass this one by. I tried to complain when we were leaving and the weird "manager" completely blew me off and just continued to say the total over and over again. I took friends in who were in from out of town and one of them is a manager at a Mexican restaurant in another city and this was embarrassing to say the least at how horrible it was. You can tell the place has been opened for many years, and I can only fathom that low expectations are the only things keeping this place going. Shame on you Guajillo's , you suck. If I could rate this place lower I would.

We just love this restaurant, I try to go there everytime I visit SA. Sopa azteca is delicious and you dont need anything else its really big. Service by owner and waiters is always excellent.

No cheese dip??? Also what's up with the chips? Very flavorless and they don't seem to be housemade. Otherwise very good....

By far the best Mexican food we ate during a long weekend in San Antonio, May 2014. Look it up and be sure to try the fried pork tenderloin. Unbelievable! It is a bit of Mexico mixed with Austria. The staff is great and the owner came by to ask me about the Pork.

Ate here in December while passing through San Antonio. Sought out the restaurant based upon TA reviews. The restaurant looks somewhat unappealing from the outside; located on a busy intersection in north San Antonio off of I-410. Inside is not much better, but we went for the food and not the ambiance. The salsa was excellent; good bite to it. I had Albondigas en Salsa Chipotle / Meat Balls in Chipotle Pepper Sauce (Hand Made Filled with Egg and Rice. Cooked in Chipotle Sauce). It was excellent. My wife had Chilaquiles / Corn Tortilla Chips with a Tomato Serrano Pepper Sauce Topped with Queso Fresco, Onions and Sour Cream. While the flavor of the sauce was decent, it turned the chips into a mush. She ordered it with beef, which was thin and tough. All in all, I'll take the long way to Mexico next time.

This is indeed the best San Antonio has of an interior Mexican "taqueria". Not a lot of flour tortillas- but rather more of a Mexico City style place. All their tacos are REALLY good and good guacamole and sopa de fideos!

I walked here from my hotel after reading the reviews. And I must say I was very happy I order a shrimp cocktail and some of the beef tacos đź both were delicious.. this will definitely be my go to place when out by the airport.. the service was fast and friendly food 5 service 5 ambiance 3 oh well I'm still giving a five give this place a try.

Guajillo's is truly one of the best Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, and that's a fact. The small family-owned restaurant serves up some of the tastiest and most authentic food in town. Their cochinita pibil is crazy good.

I search for a good salsa wherever I go. Guajillo's salsa is one of the VERY BEST salsas made in Texas. Hands down, bar none the. Best. Salsa! And it's actually spicy but also packed with incredible flavor! All of the food is excellent as well. The Mole Poblano is my favorite. The Cochinita Pibil is also delicious, my favorite side comes on this plate. It's red onions marinated in a lime citrus that completes this dish with an intense and citrusy topping. Rice and beans also come as sides. The meat is a shredded pork with a spicy chile sauce. On a tortilla, the combined flavors of corn, a tender pork with a robust Chile flavor and citrus make rolling this into a taco a roller coaster of flavors! Add a dab of salsa in there and hijole! I'm in 7th heaven. Eat at Guajillos and you won't be disappointed.

Having spent several weeks in Mexico eating locally prepared food still doesn't make me an expert on what is or isn't authentic. But I do know good. I do know fast service. This place provided both and the salsa with the chips was unique and awesome. Kind of a clue when it is a challenge to find a place to park.

The food here is definitely not what my family is used to when we have Mexican food home in Corpus. During a quick trip to SA, we decided to try it out after reading reviews here on TA. It was a little bit out of our way from where most of our activities were, but well worth the visit! The salsa was great, & I had to try the Ensalada de Nopalitos (cactus salad). I was not disappointed! I'd never had nopalitos served that way before- so different & refreshing! I'll be attempting this dish at home. My husband tried the Milanesa de Puerco (thin-sliced pork loin breaded & fried) & he enjoyed it. There were so many dishes I'd never had before that I wanted to try them all, but finally settled for the Albondigas en Salsa Chipotle (meat balls filled w/egg & rice, in Chipotle pepper sauce)- another I'll be trying to make at home, because it was delicious! I loved the heat of the salsa & my dish- not just hot, but flavorful! Even the refried beans were tasty, & those tend to be rather bland most places. We were stuffed & had to get on the road, but took a piece of flan & Tres Leches Cake to go for later. Never really been a fan of Tres Leches, & I honestly can't say this time was any different. Just not really my cup of tea. I really like the flan I make at home, but this one was at least a nice, smooth consistency, whereas others I've tried eating out had a terrible mouth feel. The only thing that could have been better is that we were seated in a booth by the entrance, & it was a little warm with the sun beating in. Other than that, the prices were very reasonable, we will definitely be back, & recommend others to give it a try!

Visited this place based on the great reviews. The food was too spicy and the rice was too salty I could not eat it. Disappointed. The waiter was nice though.

Had dinner here with two associates all of us into San Antonio for a few days. It was near the Aloft SAT and had reasonable reviews on TA. corn chips and salsa were brought to the table immediately. The chips were fresh and crispy and the salsa nice and spicy. We shared an order of the mixed ceviche. The fish was good but the sauce was a little to much like cocktail sauce instead of the citrusy sauce typical of ceviche (at ready for me). I had a big bowl of the lamb soup which was good (although my favorite lamb soup is at Little Poland on the east side of second ave between E12 and E13 at in NYC10003). Another person had the chicken mole (I forget the exact name of the dish but it's listed as the most common Mexican restaurant dish on the menu). This was delicious. The dish the third person has was shredded pork with pineapple tacos. Also delish! There were a variety of different tacos, and other Mexican dishes which all looked good coming out of the kitchen. All in all, I'd go back here when I come back, although partially because it was so close to the Aloft and is likely stay there again too (SPG member on the way to platinum status so starwoods are my goto places)

Been driving by for years, shame on me! Took wife and biz associate. As reviewed, wonderful spices and flavors. Wife had a simple vegetarian bean and rice plate that was surprisingly flavorful. I had chic hen with mole sauce and it was full of zest and spices. Other person had shredded chicken with hot pickled onions and LOVED it. Very good value and will be back soon! Owner was great to visit with also and told ud of the European restaurant his brother owns just in the next center on Blanco. VERY fast service!!

A challenge to get to, traffic-wise, but worth it! Guajillo's is an inviting island amid the hustle and bustle surrounding it. There are ample servers to seat you, take and serve your order efficiently . The Chicken Tinga was spicy and savory, the tortillas light and fresh, beans and rice balanced out the meal nicely. My wife thought the tortilla soup was a bit spicy until she sampled the chicken tinga! :) A very good meal overall. A popular eatery as foot traffic was steady throughout our meal.

We visited this restaurant on the recommendation from several Hilton hotel staff. We wanted somewhere close, casual, and authentic. There were about 25 of us. The space was small but our waitress, Flor, was patient, kind, and helpful to those of us that have not experienced a menu like this before. I had the mole poblano recommended by our shuttle bus driver. It was fabulous. The salsa is spicy. The rice and beans were spicy and wonderful. The guacamole was fantastic. There were mixed reviews within my group. Not everyone was a fan but I enjoyed it. If I lived here I would definitely come back and try something new!

Gualillo is not your typical TexMex joint. I grew up in SA but never really liked TexMex. A group of us from work went and i was blown away. I was surprised by the type of food and the quality. I took a good friend of mine who is from Mexico City and he said, this is like eating at home. I know just because person A is from a certain location doesn't make them an expert of that food. However, he is a good friend and I know his palate which is why I can trust his judgement.

I've eaten here more than a few times and love everything so it's tough to pick a favorite. My only suggestion is do not walk inexpecting tex-mex, they don't serve that here. So expect the unexpected and enjoy the flavors with family style service.

Good food & great prices. I would definitely visit again if back in San Antonio. I recommend the Enfrijoladas! The salsa was also great.

The seating was not that comfortable to sit and visit, but the food is Authentic Mexican food. We had the tacos al pastor, and tacos alhambre. We also had the Pina Colada which were excellent. The desert was to die for. All in all excellent. Will return.

This is a very small casual restaurant but it serves some of the very best real authentic Mexican food in San Antonio. The parking lot is extremely small so you may have to park behind the building and it is tough getting in and out of the back lot when larger vehicles are parked there, and it is not very well lit so not real secure. Service is good to excellent depending on who your server is and how busy they are.

Stopped here while visiting SA from Dallas.....the salsa is great; hot, smoky, spicy. My husband had the tortilla soup...a Pasilla sauce broth w/ a few tortilla strips ... I had fideo and honestly I make better stuff out of a package. My kids didn't touch a thing, but I thought perhaps I have picky eaters. But not the case, the Enfrijolada plate had fake beans and that was not Mexican rice. My husbands street tacos were good. Paid over 50 bucks and just not worth it as the other Dallas reviewer mentioned. Disappointed as I thought the closer we were to the Mexican border the more authentic food was.

Authentic Mexican style cuisine just minutes from the San Antonio Airport. Awesome food I wish I would have remembered to take a picture it was so pretty. I was warned by my waiter that they really know how to turn up the heat (I love spicy food by the way) and I was not disappointed at all. The flavors and spices brought my memories to previous trips into Mexico!

I have been hooked on Guajillo' since it opened at this location. A few years ago work brought me to within a few blocks of this unpretentious little gem. There is no Tex Mex here, but you can easily pick from an assortment of delicious dishes by reading the menu and possibly a few questions of excellent service team. On the lunch specials I have never had anyone not love the Al Ambre. If you like spice make sure to apply plenty of their one of a kind hot sauce over the dish. The Tinga de Pollo (chicken in almost a stew presentation) is incredible. I visit at least once every two weeks.

I grew up in Mexico and I find the food here the same as eating in Mexican restaurants....which is why I LOVE it! No, itâs not gourmet. No, itâs not what americans think mexican food is....itâs not Tex-Mex! No handmade tortillas here either. But if you like dishes like cochinita pibil, mole verde, bistec en pasilla, asado de puerco (my fave)....then THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!

My husband and I love this place and make it a point to lunch here every few weeks. This small locally owned restaurant serves food from the interior of Mexico , NOT the typical Tex-Mex that is so popular in San Antonio. The service is fast and reliable. The owner is always there and involved in the operations on every level. Lunch includes a bowl of their tortilla soup or a bowl of fideo. We love the Tacos Alambre- perfectly cooked pieces of pork served on top of small corn tortillas and topped with white cheese. May have to make another visit tomorrow!!!

I saw that this restaurant served Pozole and this soup isn't offered too much up north. I went there and it wasn't on the menu. But the waiter did tell me that they had it!! In any case, it was delicious. One bowl is enough for a meal with all the meat in the soup. Glad I found this place.

Very busy place. No real tacos, no enchiladas, no salsa. Everyone was having the lamb soup. We tried it, the ceviche, a,steak plate, and the margaritas. All good food, just not what we,were expecting. We,are used to Arizona Mexican food. They did look at us differently because we were probably the only non Spanish speaking people there. Still a one time good experience.

This place is always bustling, with good reason! The food is incredible, and not "Tex Mex" in any way. Locals in the area choose Guajillos over touristy Mexican food restaurants any day.

Had not been her in a couple years and dropped in! Super fast service...as soon as I sat down! Had the Grilled Chicken with a Verde Salsa - a silky green chili pepper blend! As good as it gets! Wanted to take a bowl of the Salsa home with me. Try it with the chips. Their regular Red Salsa will light up the sinus' and cause nose drip! Much too hot, but it keeps you from O-di-ing on chips! Plus, the house frozen Margarita is a nice compliment to the dinner dish! Walked out for $20 bucks!!

Found this place while researching our trip and the words used were authentic and delicious. They lived up to those words! Our server was very friendly and helped us find the perfect dish. Everything tasted homemade and full of flavor. This ainât Taco Bell, itâs legit! 100% recommend to anyone in the area!

Anytime I can go to San Antonio and eat at Guajillo's I am a happy lady. The food is authentic and I love their tortilla soup and fresh salsa. My favorite dish is El Pastor and you can never go wrong with their beef tacos. The prices are fantastic and the portions are large. Everyone who works there is very friendly and glad to offer suggestions. I recommend arriving early as the restaurant is small and very popular. You can always get it to go!

Had dinner here with my daughter on Saturday night while visiting Trinity. Friendly, quick service. Very good food. We tried the Albondigas and the enfrijoladas, both recommended. Reasonable prices. Full bar available.

WHATT???!!?? No, burritos? or enchiladas? No. Instead amazing Chicken with Mole sauce; Meatballs in a spicy red sauce; homemade tortillas; and very nice service, all in a quiet, homey, gently priced restaurant. Our waiter..Ori? ... was attentive, but not hovering, and helpful with our choices. Not what we had expected, but much better!

Love this place and need to go more often. Owners are from Mexico City and serve authentic Mexican food! Had the Bistec el Mexico and it was very tasty. Thinly sliced roast beef covered in tomatoes and onion and a wonderful sauce. Served with rice, beans and complimented with fresh tortillas. This is a go to place easily found near several hotels along 410 near Blanco Road. Try it, you'll like it! Full bar as well.

Wanted to take my staff to a nice Mexican restaurant for Christmas and this one was rated very highly. Very disappointed. The service was extremely slow, the food, was OK. Most of my staff is Hispanic and they were not impressed. The flan was flat. The salsa was too hot.

My wife and I had dinner while passing through San Antonio, based on TripAdvisor reviews. The recommendations were spot on. Started with a Cactus Salad; cool, fresh, and a perfect appetizer. My wife had Bistec a la Mexicana (Thin steak strips with serrano pepper sauce). The meat was fork tender and had an excellent flavor, smokey but not "barbequed" The serrano sauce was spicey, not too hot, but with nice residual heat and outstanding flavor. I had the Mole Verde con Pechuga de Pollo (Chicken breast with green mole). Chicken had been pounded thin, sauteed lightly, then covered with outstanding green chile mole sauce. Delicious. Both dishes were served with the best refried beans either of us had had in many years. Conclusion: If you are looking for excellent mexican food (not Tex-Mex), this is the place to go in San Antonio.

Looking for some great mexican food and found it. Small place on corner of 410 & Blanco....wow, the hot sauce it awesome and the food was delicious. Not Tex-Mex, authentic Mexican food. Can't wait to go back!

The parking is a challenge, there is parking in the back. Do not park in the Prinz Center, there are signs that your vehicle will get towed! For credit card, there is a 3% up charge. The salsa is nice and hot! The birra, is very good, the lamb just melts in your mouth! What makes this soup even better is when its cold out side. When its cold outside, will notice that majority of the customer will order some kind of soup. I'm suspecting that everyone is ordering the birra. The Cochinita Pibil is amazing! No matter what you order, can not go wrong.

This is not tex-mex, this is not americanized mexican food. This is straight up legit Mexican. The chips were not my favorite, but they were ok and the salsa was amazing. I love spicy and most places just lack that heat. Not here, their salsa was very spicy but flavorful. I had the Albodingas with rice and beans, and haven't had better anywhere. I also tried the shrimp cocktail, a ton of shrimp for $8.. I think mine had almost ten large shrimp. It was really good, especially if you add a bit of the salsa to it. This place is quite easy to pass by but make sure you find your way here.

I'm hispanic, born and raised in San Antonio. Tex-mex runs through my veins. I didn't discover this place until my 20s and now it is my absolute favorite. Rice and beans are a staple, whether Mex or Tex-mex you are getting rice and beans on the side, right? They have the BEST beans I have ever tasted, ever! The sides beans were always just an after thought cause they are pretty much the same everywhere, except here. Soooo good. You won't find enchiladas but instead enfrijoladas and you won't find fajitas but instead bistec in a sauce. It's similar but different and if you like real mexican spice then this is the place for you. I bring everyone here. It's a small hole in the wall type place but roomy and the waitstaff is always great. I no longer live in San Antonio but I come here everytime I visit, without fail. My favorites: Mole Poblano and abondigas for entree. The fidio and tortilla soup are so good, I'd order both if I could fit it. Horchata to drink and usually flan for dessert. The salsa is free but my bofriend always buys a 12oz container to go, it is not for the faint. The spicy level is high but it has soo much flavor. I can only tolerate it for a while but it's so good I eat it till my mouth can't stand it any longer. My boyfriend loves spicy and this is by far his favorite. I rally can't rave about this place enough.. If in San Antonio, this is a must for real authentic Mexican food.

What a big disappointment. I agree with other reviews. No crunch chip tortillas. Canned flavor beans. And flour tortillas from a 'vendor in Austin ', That's what the owner said. What what...a short cut on their food. Ordered mole enchiladas and I got steamed brown rice and canned beans. No excuse for that!!! My trip ended tonight for this restaurant ! By the way, the dead cockroach under the table was a done deal.

Had a layover in San Antonio and I love Mexican food. I read the reviews before hand and thought I'd give it a try. Very glad I did. The food was great the salsa is very hot, so be forewarned. Casual dining. Great place.

When we travel, we always make it a point to eat like the locals. Guajillo's was a gem. It is definitely not to be missed. The reviews posted about the Mex without the Tex menu was convincing enough for us to seek it out. It is a small restaurant, but has a quick turnover. There is additional parking in back of the restaurant on a lower level. It was obvious that many people were regulars. Our waiter made several recommendations at our request. My margarita was simple and straight forward. The best I had in San Antonio on this visit. We received our chips and salsa soon after arriving. After asking if we had been there before, our waiter cautioned us that the salsa was very hot and and are happy he did. It indeed packed lots of heat. We ordered the Gringa for an appetizer and the Chilaquiles Bistec and the marinated pork loin tacos as entrees. We were not disappointed in any of the choices. People were given their bills and went up to the counter /bar to pay before leaving. When our waiter brought our bill, the person behind the bar actually came to our table and asked about our meal. We shared that we were from New Orleans and enjoyed spicy food and that this had been our best meal in San Antonio. He took great pride in discussing their cooking methods and suggested we return to try their spicy shrimp soup. We left with a slice of tres leche cake to share later on with a glass of wine.

Well, did my order, and was excited to taste new burger. I thought they might give Jack in the box competition. (Wrong ) I Was totally disappointed. First of all, bread was not toasted thoroughly. Secondly, it was barely warm. Hamburger meat was also barely warm. I did not want to complain bc I get so upset when I spend big money and don't get what I want. I will never go back to eat lunch or any burger items from Burger King again ever. I might say though they may have good breakfast. But I haven't been to Burger King in ages. Location SW San Antonio SW military drive Time: after lunch (1:30pm )

We were looking for Mexican food that wasn't the usual Tex-Mex. This place has that. Our waiter was super and offered some recommendations for us to try. We enjoyed it.

The mole verde was very good and everyone else in our party of 9 seemed to enjoy their dishes as well but many commented on the tasteless chips, bland guacamole and rubbery side tortillas. Aren't these what they should have perfected by now? The service was excellent our waiter bent over backwards to accommodate our needs. I just didn't have the heart to send these items back.

This place is the bomb! It looks like an upscale Taco Bell from the outside but on the inside it is oh so different! Coachinita is fantastic (just like Mexico City) and the pastor as well. I've never seen my family fight over food as much as they did at this place! Stay away from the ceviche.

We're from Houston and this is the second time we've been here. San Antonio & Houston both have incredible Mexican restaurants and this one ranks up there with the best. Good salsa with chips to start out with. The soup came and the wife had the Tortilla soup and I had the Sopa Fideo. The Tortilla soup was really good, but it needed the crispy tortilla strips on the side so you can add them to the soup when you need it so it stays crispy. It also could use some avocado with it, too. The Sopa Fideo was excellent!! Rich broth with wonderful Fideo noodles. For the main course, the wife had the Alhambra and it was really delicious. But, what stole the show was my order of Tacos al Pastor!!!! This was truly spectacular!! You can tell a lot about a real Mexican restaurant (not Tex-Mex) by its Pastor. This was authentically made and it had an explosion of flavor. Stunning!! The refried beans were homemade and had that wonderful roasted flavor that puts it over the top. Go here!!!!

I had been to Guajillos a time ago and remembered the food was good. This time around We found it to be very disappointing. We ordered the Fideo Soup, and different taco plates and sides of rice. Soup was fair enough, but everything came out at the same time. By the time we finished the soup the Tacos were cold. The rice was inedible, salty parboiled rice. The "gringas" were bland, store bought tortillas, very skimpy on the tasteless pastor meat and mostly cheese. The "Bistec" tacos were hard and tasteless. Had to send the rice back. The competition has surpassed this once great place. The only thing that has not changed is the decor. Same one as 15 years ago.

I used to live in San Antonio. When I returned to San Antonio for the first time in years, I went directly to Guajillos. Still GREAT. Eat the Bistec tacos. Ask for cilantro and onion, they will bring them on the side for no extra charge. The appearance of the restaurant is not fancy but the food is wonderful. Don't expect American Tex Mex. It's Mexican food.

We were in town visiting family and were looking for a Mexican restaurant to try in the area of our hotel. We wanted something different and this was it. First it is a very nice restaurant with good service. We had trouble understanding the menu items. My husband and daughters fiancé were able to order since they were familiar with the descriptions. I however only understand burrito, fajitas ect. Neither of which are on the menu( even though I noticed other diners eating these items LOL) anyway I ordered a chicken quesadilla and they were happy to make it. My husband ordered a meat ball dish that was delicious and son to be ordered steak mexicana. It was very good and very inexpensive. If I lived in SATX would go back to try other dishes. And would def. order the meatballs.

If you know the difference, or want to discover the difference, between Tex-Mex and real Mexican food, this is the restaurant for you. The menu is inviting, the servings LARGE, and the flavor and seasoning of each dish outstanding. I had a serving of ceviche which quite frankly could have been my meal, it was so generous. Unusual because the broth the fish was in contained tomato sauce as well as the required lemon, but EXCELLENT. In true Mexican style it was hot, but not uncomfortably so. My next choice was Tinga de Pollo (shredded chicken with onions in a Chipotle sauce)...very spicy, not for the faint of heart but so noted on the menu. VERY GOOD. The restaurant itself is a family type restaurant, not fancy but very welcoming. I highly recommend this restaurant and I will return!

I really enjoy eating at this restaurant. The staff is outstanding. Always attending your every need. The food is always good. But I really just stick to one plate. The tostadas de picadillo, which are not on the menu, are the best I've ever had. No point in describing the taste, just take my word for it. You also get beans, which are a bit spicy but delicious, and rice. More than enough food. Try not to eat so many chips before you get your meal. Also, the jamaica is also great. The tacos al pastor are also good and so is the sopa de fideo which i usually get for my kids. Can't comment on the other dishes since I just go for the tostadas.

Great service, great food, great prices! Flor was a fantastic server with a smile. She was extremely efficient, and very personable. The food was fresh and delicious and my only regret was that I could not have a margarita today as I have to be at work in a few hours! Their lunch specials are about $8.50 and include chips, salsa, and choice of soup along with rice and beans!

Coming from a Hispanic, this is not authentic Mexican food. The salsa is hot, but it doesn't have a tasty flavor. If you want home-made tortillas, this is not the place to come. I order mole and it came with white rice not Mexican rice. The beans did not taste home-made either.

I don't understand the hype of this place. Wife and I went here for lunch and nearly left hungry. The hot sauce was too spicy for her (and she's Latina), and they don't offer a less spicy one. She ordered beef stew, and it was so greasy she had to send it back. Then she tried ceviche, which is basically served in a schooner of cocktail sauce. They're not accommodating on substitutions either (seriously, not at all), so if you don't find something on the menu just how you like it...well, you're out of luck. I poured over the menu for quite a while before finding something made their way that I thought I could live with. I tried the Alambre pork tacos, but they were very tiny and just not all that good. The rice didn't have much flavor either, but the beans and guacamole were both good. Again, I don't get the hypeâwe both consider this a failed experiment.

Really good food and not the usual Tex-Mex flavor. Great fideo! The chilaquiles are also fabulous! Once you come you will definitely be back! FYI: this restaurant in actually located in the City of Castle Hills, not San Antonio.

The food and salsas are delicious !! It's definitely a Mexican restaurant. The beer and micheladas are very well prepared. Order the mole!! Every time I go to San Antonio me and my love always eat there. You can't go wrong. Wish there were more of these !

Very disappointed with food here! Mole was not thick, watery and no real flavor! Chicken was a long thin piece of meat! Mole was not cooked with chicken, placed on top like a gravy! Brownish looking rice with no spices added, liked like a rice which was only boiled, not sautéed! Mini tacos served alone with raw onions! Will not returned!!!!

Owner and management are great (very friendly). The Tingo is my favorite. Spicy but the flavor amazing.

We loved it.. The food was delicious - the staff cheerful and very busy. The Uber driver recommended it. Best Tortilla Soup Ever.

Our hotel ran a shuttle to here so we thought we would give it a try. Upon first look we were disappointed. Entering and looking at menu it had nothing we were familiar with. Started with an app, guac and a margarita. Well we were hooked after one bite. We stayed for dinner and it was amazing. The fried bean taco was crunchy and cheese goodness! Tinga de polls did not disappoint. Give it a try!

Despite the lunch rush the staff was friendly, attendant, and the food came out super fast. Every dish was absolutely delicious and we enjoyed every bite! Definitely a highlight of our trip and would highly recommend to anyone.

Holy crap, this was so good. The best tacos I have ever had. Seasoned perfectly. The pepper salsa (SPICY very and I love spice) was so good, my mouth was numb and I kept eating eat. The cactus salad was amazing. I have been to mexico alot and this would be considered very creative authentic central area mexican food. I can't wait to eat the left overs. 6 tacos to an order and get the cheese added. Got to get one with bacon. Oh my so good.

We were in the area with a little time to kill and wanted just a little something to hold us over. The sign caught our eye along with the amount of cars in the parking lot. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the owner who took us to our table. He ask if we had ever been in before and then explained the way that he cooks. He is from Mexico City and uses the authentic traditional way to cook. He said he doesn't use a bunch of oil and spices, but water and chili pepper to spice. I told him we were just there for something small to share. He recommended the bean tacos which we ordered. They were phenomenal!! We also had top shelf margaritas that were perfect. The owner as well as the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. We definitely want to return while we're in town.

Great place to eat. Plenty of food and great atmosphere. A different style of Mexican food that is different than most places in San Antonio.

The fideo soup it delicious. If you want true authentic Mexican food you have to try this place. Chilaquiles, taquitos and of course agua de horchata!.

You need to make a short trip to Guajillo's. From their spicy shrimp caldo, to their fideo and tacos al pastor, the food is as authentic as it can get. Don't miss out on the opportunity to savor authentic Mexican flavors this side of the border.

this is not your ordinary mexican food its true mexican not tex mex the hot sauce truly means hot the mexican meatballs are truly great and many other menu items very good wait staff and reasonably priced and a good amount of food if you want the different this is the place to go

Dont know why this restaurant has such a high rating. Some of the food is ok but it was better before. Also dont know what the problem is with the owner. He has some kind of an attitude problem or is extremely anti people. He bought this restaurant several years ago and I liked it much better before. It is a bit nostalgic for me and that is the reason I kept going. I will never give this man my business again

Everything is just right at this restaurant: Quality, variety, beverages and definitely the cost. Try their fideo or their tacos al pastor.

Stopped in for treat! Late lunch, tried the Fideo (it was excellent) and the Molé chicken (also excellent!). Loved the nopales salad! Wish I had saved room for dessert!

This place has been around for 15 years, but it was our first visit. The location at the NW corner of Blanco Rd and IH 410 is a bit dicey getting in and out. Our server was Jesse and he was a good guy. Their menu reads like a gourmet Mexican selection with most of the entrees from Mexico City. The chips were average, but the salsa was pretty nasty with a serious after burn that lasted many hours. The chicken mole sauce was very good with hints of chocolate. Their chicken is served very flat and thin. The rice and beans were quite tasty and better than average. The chicken with salsa verde was not as good, and a bit spicy for my BW. Their Margaritas were good and robust. Hardly any of the food here is like that served in a usual Tex/Mex restaurant and is unique. Our service was good, but the atmosphere here is noisy.

I'm not in Kansas anymore, that's for sure. Every Mexican restaurant I've been to out West serves spicy salsa without me having to ask for it. I love it! The server brought out chips and salsa and I asked (as always) if I could also get spicy salsa. He got a puzzled look on his face, like I was from the moon, and said, "Ma'am, maybe you should try this first." I tasted it. My taste buds went into a tizzy. It was hot and bursting with flavor! I ordered a house margarita and some type of chicken dish (chicken tinga?) shredded chicken with onion and peppers, and three little crisp tortillas. It was very flavorful. My only disappointment was the size and cost of the margarita. It was $5.95 and only about 8 or 10 ounces. The more I travel the more I appreciate restaurants back home, where a $5.95 margarita is 20 ounces and there's always some drink or food special. Other than the cost, I though the food was very good, and so was the service.

Ok- flew to San Antonio, flight was delayed and was starving. My friend recommended we stop here for some tacos since it was a quick off/on the freeway. First, they gave us some salsa and chips- wow!! It wasn't wimpy from a can salsa, this stuff was spicy and incredibly tasty. We had to have them bring more. We ordered the tacos al pastor and the el bistec, swapped half on each plate so we could have both. I'm telling you, this reminded me so much of my favorite street tacos we had in Mexico. Sublime! Definitely will be on my "must visit again" list.

Real Mexican food, not Tex-Mex. Smells and tastes like the real deal. I will be back anytime that my travels take me to San Antonio.

What can I say? It's always good. The albondigas are quite spicy, so be forewarned. Great margaritas. Oh, and try the mole, both green and brown. Desserts? You can't go wrong.

food is good just make sure to check your bill every time in go they all ways over charge me. I let them know and they change it, but once you check you bank statement it has the over charge on their. BE WARE OF THE OVER CHARGE!!!

Authentic Mexican food with quaint atmosphere, good margaritas and fast service. Easy on wallet too!

I love Mexican food, authentic or not, and a variety of it. Chips and salsa were not very good. Nothing on this menu sounded appealing in detail. Then I ordered, donated food to husband, ordered again and left hungry. This was an incredibly busy restaurant and had a family owned feel and local vibe we enjoyed. Our friends that live in the area even recommended it and we wanted to love it too. Parking is a little tricky but not impossible; entrance requires a hard turn, and the lot is on the corner of a busy intersection.

Exceptional food , really authentic Mexican stile plates . If you love spicy this is the place to visit . Everything is good on the menu . My favorite is the chicken Tinga.

This place is not long on ambiance, but what it lacks in atmosphere it makes up for with great service and very, very good food. This is not your Tex-Mex fare, it is more traditional and very tasty. The chips and salsa were fresh and flavorful. The sauce had kick, which I appreciate! I started with the shrimp and fish ceviche, which is more like a shrimp cocktail than the Miami-style lime juice variety. It was a very generous helping of fresh fish and shrimp and had great flavor. For my main dish I had the chilaquiles (mainly because I like saying it) with thin sliced steak, Wow! Put a little salsa on it and you have a taste sensation! For my first drink I ordered a skinny Margarita, it was good. However, I had a hankering, so I asked my server if the bartender was open to requests, he said "you bet" and sent him over right away. I explained my yen, and he fixed it up exactly as I craved. He even stopped by to make sure it was right. The service was attentive and friendly without hovering. When I arrived I mentioned I intended to read and they put me at a table with a light just overhead. I thoroughly enjoyed this dining experience and will return next time I am in town!

We were staying nearby at the Four Points so wanted to get a bite to eat around 8PM. My wife found this place on Yelp and we were happy she did. The location is off the service road by the highway, but we managed to find our way there. The place is dark, but you'll notice a ton of Mexican nationals eating there so you know it's legit. We had a super server that always anticipated our needs and was super helpful to all the tables he was covering. Amazing.

I love this place the pool it's something else I rely recommend it the salsa it's good the service excellent my daughter loves the fideo and las gringas too gringa it's a flour tortilla and queso blanco and meet al pastor that's pork really good and my wife loves the enmoladas she say it was wonderful and rely testing I love this place

If you want the real deal, try Guajillos in the airport area of San Antonio. I thoroughly enjoyed my plate of mole, and my friend ordered her same plate she gets every time she goes, called "Enfrijoladas." The decor is very plain and basic, no frills, and the prices are cheap. Be prepared for a parking challenge, but it is worth the trouble. This place was MUCH better than the food we ate the next day on the River Walk, and half the price.

Wow- great place to go eat. Walked in and they seated us immediately and close to the front so my mom who doesn't walk that well wouldn't have to walk very far. Food was excellent and very reasonably priced and the waitress was great. I highly recommend this as a very good little Mexican restaurant to go to. One if the best I have eaten at

We were staying at a hotel nearby and the shuttle driver recommended this restaurant. From the outside I wasnât expecting much. However everything was great even with it being Valentineâs Day. Our server was great at providing recommendations, drinks were really good and the food was fantastic.

My wife and I stopped in originally for dinner but the kitchen uses oil that contains soy, so my wife canât eat anything fried. She could have the shrimp cocktail which as actually more like a cold shrimp soup; we both loved it. I had the 3 fried bean tacos with chicken and they were amazing. The salsa served with chips was very good but some people might think it was too hot, especially people not from Texas. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and worked with us to find something my wife could eat. Only bad part of the meal was the ice tea; it was undrinkable. Just have a margarita instead.

I can't stress enough that this is not Tex Mex. I was stumped by what to order so I asked the waitress for a recommendation. She was very sweet and gave us several suggestions. We both loved our food. I ordered a bean/tortilla dish and my husband got some tacos. I also got a margarita that was delicious but really snuck up on me! We would like to visit again if we are back in the area.

Delicious food. The fideo soup was the best I've ever had. The tortilla soup is a bit spicy. We ate the Tacos de Alhambra and they were fantastic. For dessert we ate flan which was perfect. Great place for lunch and a very reasonable price. Service was fast and friendly. I'll be back for sure!

We loved it.. The food was delicious - the staff cheerful and very busy. The Uber driver recommended it. Best Tortilla Soup Ever.

This is the real deal. Great authentic Mexican food in a casual atmosphere. This is not Tex Mex, it is central Mexico fare in an unassuming atmosphere. We had the chicken mole and Mexican meatballs and they were both excellent. The mole was very dark and slightly sweet with just a hint of spice. The meatballs were cooked in a delicious pepper sauce and were quite spicy but fine unless you really don't like spicy at all. And the churros and margaritas were great as well.

Guijillos has the most authentic Mexican food in San Antonio. This is not a tex-mex restaurant. The food is more from Central to South Mexico. They also have an amazing lunch special. Their guajillo salsa is the best.

Authentic Mexican food. Not texmex. Salsa was spicy and had excellent flavor! The cactus appetizer was tasty with a large portion. I had the mole poblano and it was delicious, as was my husbands asado de puerco! Service was excellent! Good margaritas. Check this place out!

The atmosphere is very casual. The food is delicious and very spicy! It is very different from Tex mex and very good! The margaritas are great too!

I had great food and experience eating at Guajillo's. This is not Tex Mex!. I have no Mexican heritage but have eaten in Mexico (not just south of the boarder). Guajillo's food has the fresh and authentic taste of traditional Mexican. I had the Zucchini slices with mole and it was very good. Their beans and especially the guacamole is very fresh and tasty. The service and friendliness also get 5 star. I had my two grandsons with me (5 months old and 3 years old) the staff saw me coming in and met me at the door, opened it, offered to take the baby carrier and took me to the table that best met my needs. The waitress was friendly and efficient (how wonderful to find in a restaurant)! She interacted with my 3 year old and encouraged him to eat his dinner. I regret I am not from San Antonio, if so, they would be in my top 5 restaurants. I am not a fan of chain restaurant and like to experience the family restaurant when possible. It was a great meal and friendly service. I am not rating this restaurant on appearance, decor or ambiance - they don't need it. We used the restroom and it was clean. The parking is limited in front but they have ample space in rear.

By far, the best Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. A close friend brought me here about 4 years ago, and it was love at first bite! My favorite is the tortilla soup, spicy and delicious! It is very unique, and ruined all other tortilla soups for me. The Chilaquiles con pollo is the ultimate comfort food. To be honest, I can't try anything else on the menu, because I just crave the Chilaquiles. A couple tips: go for the lunch specials, they are a bargain! If you don't like spicy...this may not be the restaurant for you. Have an open mind about their tortilla soup (it has no chicken in it), it will change your life! Their refrained beans are fantastic, I think I read they cook them in water instead of oil. They are the only refried beans I like, and I love to dip the tortilla chips in them:). Also, it is locally owned. I always see the owners there, and they are very friendly. I even got a free birthday meal.

Food was good. Sauce was to spicy but good. The rice didnât taste good but everything else was good. The restaurant in the outside doesnât look to inviting. The road messed up

Prior to an early morning SAT departure, arranged remote parking and spent preceding night at nearby Hilton Double Tree and has supper at Guajillo's just to the West on Loop 410. True Mexico City food, The Aztec Soup was as delightful as any soup I have ever eaten. We were delighted by the meal.

I had a very good lunch. I could have gone to excellent except the chicken was a little tough. The salsa servced with the chips was excellent and quite addicting. My chicken sauce and sides were also excellent. The next table has tostados that looked nice. All portions are large. i arrived just as they opened for lunch and they were packed in less than 15-minutes. I plan a return next time in town.

We really enjoyed our evening at Guajillo's! The food was different than the TexMex we're used to. All the food we tried was so flavorful: the cactus salad, the albondigas (meatballs - especially good), al pastor tacos, alambre tacos, and gringo tacos (more like a quesadilla). The margaritas were not impressive, I'm afraid. The restaurant was full of patrons. Obviously people in the area love going there. We highly recommend it.

Get a break from the usual San Antonio Tex-mex, and try the authentic new choices offered here from interior Mexico! The Green Mole rocks!

Everything is great here from the Soup to the tacos and the flan for dessert! I enjoyed all three and you won't be disappointed with what you order. My husband had to try the meatballs as it was an usual choice on a Mexican menu but the peppers that were in the meatballs intrigued him. He broke out in a sweat as he ate and said they were great!

Truly this is the shortcut to Mexican Cuisine. I have been to Guajillo's too many times to count. Why? You might say? The food and the service. San Antonio is filled with MANY Mexican style restaurants. So many in fact that it's hard to keep up with them all. Most are Tex-Mex style, which is fine if your in the mood for that. However when you want to venture down roads less traveled, into traditional cooking and exotic spices, then look no further. Don't expect fine dining or NYC type prices. Guajillos is simple. The staff are very friendly and appreciate your patronage. Start off with their chips and salsa! Whew! The "HEAT" is sooo good, but totally addictive and you can't stop eating it. Take it up another level and add their Guacamole! This alone can satisfy the most picky of eaters. Grab a Horchata to keep the spices, in check. While I have tried many of their dishes, my all time favorite is their Cochinita Pibil which is a pork loin stew with pickled spicy red onions. Don't forget the refried beans and rice. This dish alone encapsulates what Mexican food is all about. Top it off with their homemade flan. Oh so good. Instead of just filling your stomach. Take a culinary journey to your happiness. You won't be disappointed. I can't wait to go back.

This place is really authentic. This torta de chilaquiles (available Saturdays only) is absolutely delicious.

My son-in-law, who is from Mexico, took introduced up to this gem. We visited on a Saturday afternoon so it was not lunch or dinner, but the food was delicious. Here are some of the things we ordered: Chilaquiles; Sopa Azteca; Coctel de Camoron; Flan; Arroz con Leche. Of course, you must have one of their agua frescas - we had Horchata (rice) and Jamaica (hibiscus). I have lived in the San Antonio area for 30 years and have never stopped at this restaurant although I have passed it many times. Thanks to my son-in-law I will be visiting while I am in San Antonio.

One of the best mexican restaurante I hace ever been to and I live in México, its amazing, everything from the tortilla soul to the tacos and sauces. I really love it.

Visited here based soley on reviews, and I got what I expected, great meal at a fair price. I really wanted to try the fideo soup, but I was coming in so hot from outside I just didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I could. Next time. Had the alambre tacos and a side of guacamole. Both were fresh and very good. But their salsa is out of this world good. Only shame was, it was so flavorful that it over powered my other food. It's a salty, sweet, habanero kick that I lapped up all I could with every crumb of chips I had, even after finishing my meal. Parking is a little tight and grungy, don't come here for the scenery folks. But I think I'll make this a normal consideration when in San Antonio.

Wonderful gem of a locally-owned restaurant. Fabulous food, & excellent service by Paola. Authentic Mexican cuisine.

Very good food and well prepared. More traditional Mexican than Tex-Mex. The ambiance is nondescript, but people come to this popular place for the food and not for the atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive. They are also proud of their product and will readily talk about how it is prepared. I had the bistec tacos, thin sliced steak that is chopped and grilled. They come "street style": on 6 mini tortillas, open face with diced onion and cilantro on the side. My companion had the chicken breast with green mole and it came with rice and refried beans. The refried beans are cooked with no lard, no bacon and no oil. We were told that they are not really refried, but are mashed with a bit of pepper. All of our food was very good and tasty. The prices were also very reasonable. We really liked the food at Guajillo's and enjoyed the break from typical Tex-Mex fare.

As a pilot for Southwest Airlines I have the privilege of sampling this country's finest food. Guajillo's is the best I have ever experienced north of Mexico City.

Nothing fancy, but great food! Again, we've eaten here for years and the quality is always consistent. This is food prepared as in the interior of Mexico, no TexMex here. Pretty much all locals.

A break from all from all of the Tex-Mex in San Antonio. Consistently good food in this location for the past 18 years. Tried the pork tenderloin this evening. 2 large, nicely prepared tenderloins. Spouse had the excellent chicken mole. Save room for dessert. Both flan & rice pudding are fantastic.

Chili rellenos - should be singular, one smallish chili, cheese filled soggy and not tasty. They will not serve it a la carte. Waiter said he would add a lettuce and tomato salad since I did not want rice, beans and tortillas. Came to the table all alone on the plate. At least the cheese was melted. Sauce - middling at best. Tostadas and salsa was acceptable without demerits - but no stars either. My brother had Mole Poblano Chicken Breast. The mole was okay - but the chicken was flattened, tough and tasteless. I tasted it - not good. I did not try the rice or beans. The report on the corn tortilla was it okay - but nothing special. Service was civil and acceptable. On the way out the fellow at the front looked at us and said nothing - we said "goodbye". Neither one of us will be back. Access and parking are a pain - so nothing really to recommend this spot when San Antonio has so many others.

We went early evening on a Sunday with our friends from Florida who have done more than one cruise to Mexico and had authentic Mexican food. The place was really busy, had to circle once to find a parking place that belonged to the restaurant and to avoid the problem noted in other reviews about having my car towed away because it was in another businesses space. I've had what passes for Mexican all across the US and all the southern provinces of Canada, and while I prefer San Antonio's Tex-Mex over my native Californian variation, it was worth the trip to see what was being called "authentic". BTW: most of the Canadian ones were "Mexican/Chinese" and used store bought Mexican ingredients, and in Omaha Nebraska we couldn't find tortillas in the local grocery super markets. The chips didn't appear to be prepared at the restaurant but did have a good flavor and not oily. The salsa was greenish and much spicier than that served at our favorite Mexican restaurant (see my other reviews) The wife had to resort to Tagamet later to settle things down. I had the Surtidos (3 meat tacos; Steak, Pork Loin and Pastor) served on 6 small corn tortillas, with some melted white colored cheese (panela?) over the top of the meat. With the added guacamole the flavor and total serving size was 'quite good'. The wife had the Bistec (thin slice steak, grilled and chopped) and felt that it was 'good'. Neither of these two came with rice and beans, or the guacamole which was extra. Our friends had the Chile Relleno and Mole Poblano which they considered to be good enough to try again, but not outstanding. All were served with corn tortillas. Two of us had the Margaritaâs (one frozen and the other over the rocks) had a good flavor (their homemade Lime Mix Recipe) but seemed a bit on the weak side in terms of the amount of tequila. The waiter did get the order bassackwards and she got sugar on hers instead of it being on my frozen one. When it comes to the Margaritas, Iâll go back to Chileâs, where I can also get my kicker of Chambord (black raspberry liqueur) added. Summation: Weâd go back again but it isnât our favorite.

Great food, great service. Highly recommend. Love the soups and tacos. Great family atmosphere. Amazing flavor!

We live in Dallas, but we visit this restaurant EVERY time we stop or pass by San Antonio. This is my favorite place to eat. The chilaquiles are to die for. I recently decided to try something new and it was just as amazing. The soups are so delicious. We recently made a trip to Port Aransas in which we stopped by to eat on the way to Port A and again on the way back from Port A. So worth the extra time. And even the prices are great. And we ALWAYS receive excellent customer service. You must try this place if your in San Antonio and like real Mexican food.

Food tasted delicious! Staff was super friendly and helpful! Great atmosphere! Restaurant was clean and in great location !

This little spot was absolutely the best Mexican food I have ever had. It is not your typical "Tex-Mex" restaurant, but true Mexico City type Mexican food. Just absolutely delicious! Service was pretty good too and we were there during a busy lunch time. Would definitely recommend.

My family and I while visiting San Antonio were so excited to try authentic Mexican food and wow were we disappointed by this place. Growing up in Southern California we appreciate authentic Mexican food but this was totally different than what we expected. First off, they didn't offer any kid's meals which was a disappointment. When asked they recommended a plate that cost $15 that was filled with items most kids wouldn't eat. So we ended up getting a side of bean and a tortilla which they charged us $5 for Ana we had to assemble it ourselves. The chips and salsa were good but be warned the salsa was blazing spicy! We love spicy food and their salsa put our mouths on fire. It had flavor just anyone sensitive to spice or kids would really regret trying their salsa. I had the Pollo a la Assad which was ok, it definitely was a little on the bland side and drenched with a bland watery ranchero style sauce. My husband ordered the tortilla soup and Bisteces a la Mexicana. His Bisteces a la mexicana was ok. The steak was again lacking in flavor and like my chicken was drenched in a watery bland sauce. He did enjoy the charo beans that were served with the meal. He said they had great flavor. The tortilla soup was disgusting! It literally was broth and a few tortilla stripes. It had the consistency of a super watery mole/bullion bowl. No other flavors at all! Super weird & gross. No cheese, no chicken, no veggies just watery nastiness & a few floating tortilla stripes. Our bill was over $50 and it absolutely didn't hit the spot. Super disappointing and over priced for the food they're producing. Maybe they had an off night or new cook, who knows because we will never go back when visiting the area.

This location was recommended by a coworker. Upon arriving we were somewhat skeptical due to the restaurants appearance. The restaurant is somewhat small, with a few booths and tables inside. It also has a small bar inside. Service was good, we were greeted by management and our server was very helpful. As for their food, their menu is very small, with few entrée plates. We ordered their famous tinga plate which was good. Shredded spicy chicken served with beans and rice! In addition, we had their sopa Azteca, which was different but still very good. Not very spicy soup, served with a side of cheese, pepper and guacamole, also very good! We also had their margaritas. I really enjoyed their mango margarita, not so much their tamarindo margarita, although I love tamarindo. Their margaritas were also strong, surprisingly, after drinking one I was already feeling tipsy. Overall, food was decent, service was good, but the menu was very small. Prices were also decent. I definitely recommend their Tinga. Their food is definitely what their restaurant title states, authentic Mexican food.

Great restaurant for real Mexican food not texmex, delicious meal, great friendly service and fun atmosphere, a definite stop for a meal when visiting San Antonio.

we had some tacos. they were very good. the hot sauce is very hot, and that is the only version they have. the service was very good, and the prices were reasonable.

Parking is crazy, but service is fast! Our waitress knows the menu like the back of her hand. The place is not fancy but they work hard. Food was tasty but not hot.

This place is awesome! I've been there a lot of times and the Mexican food is great, I've had a couple of times the "Pollo con Mole" it's delicious

People - DO NOT sleep on their fideo sopa!! It is beyond words, one of those dishes Iâll be dreaming about for years!! Chips and salsa - the chips were not great, and although the salsa was spicy, it had a GREAT flavour so I suckered through it. Iâd ordered the tacos de alambre lunch deal, but it wasnât really anything special. 4 mini tacos with not much of any seasoning, although the beans and rice were pretty good. Also ordered a mixed ceviche to go, came in a red sauce so it isnât traditional but still had a great taste! Definitely is spicy too though. I do recommend this place, will look at the individual tacos for next time instead.

After discovering we'd be traveling by this restaurant, we decided to stop for lunch. Though they had many patrons there, we were quickly seated and served. We ordered the two top lunch menu items for 8.50 each. One was the spicy pork on tortillas and the other was a chicken and natchos dish. I had a margarita (frozen) which was yummy and my husband had a Mexican Pacifico beer that was super cold & enjoyed. We started our meal with soup. One chicken & one beef, but we both agreed they were too salty and did not finish them. Our waiter was enthusiastic and welcoming. We would definitely eat here again, just bypass the soup.

I was thrilled to speak with the manager and learn that their refried beans had no lard or bacon fat. And their Verde Mole' was truly vegan as well and outstanding over grilled zucchini. But the salsa.....I would go back just for that. Spicy and the best I can recall. The corn tortillas were perfect as well. If only it hadn't been lunch and I could have tried their margarita as I understand they are tasty. The menu is not a typical Mexican restaurant, but much more authentic and for carnivores- enjoy!

Maybe I'm just not a fan of authentic Mexican food but my food was horrible! First of all my food was served luke warm and looked like something already digested swimming in brown sauce. I ate a few bites of the rice and chips. Even the guacamole was bad and much too salty. The service was good and fast but I won't be back!
Excellent food
I came with my colleagues for lunch and we had a great experience. The service was fast and Friendly, and the food was excellent. I ordered the "Bacalao a la Mexicana" and I wanted more when I finished my plate. Lunch specials cost $8.50.
