Rude and grubby

By Jiiiiimmmmmmbbbbbooo |

Booked for 8pm table still not available at 8:25. Rude couldn’t care less attitude from the receptionist.. looked kinda dirty too (the restaurant that is). Rubbish looking signs stuck up around the place with sticky tape. Found a much better place around the corner. Deffo won’t be back.

This place is so much fun

By vox-sf |

I've eaten here twice in the last few months and each time have had a blast. You order meats and things and get to grill them on a grill at the table yourself. The food tastes great and the ambiance feels the most like being in Japan of anywhere in the States I think I have been to.

Unique Experience!

By LuckyGirl0717 |

My boyfriend and I came here and dined on the 3rd floor (traditional Japanese style where you have to take your shoes off). It was a really cool experience to be able to sit in that room. The staff was really nice and did a good job at explaining how long each meat should cook and offered suggestions. The meat was really good quality and if you get one of the combinations, be prepared to eat a lot of meat between 2 people. The first option honestly could've easily fed 4 people.

Your the chef

By TMP4228 |

This place is always crowded so get your reservation in early. It's a Japanese Steak house where you cook your own food on a hibachi in the middle of the table. The meat is very thin and cooks within 60 to 90 seconds. Besides having excellent food the kids love to go there to cook the food themselves.

WOW, great meal and service

By Garonne9 |

Our first time to a Japanese BBQ restaurant. It was fun to cook the meats oneself, but the flavours were amazing. As the meal progressed, the flavours got better and better. We put the provided sauces into the dish provided, but the fish and meat flavours were better without them. Great setting, great fun and fantastic alround quality and service. Must do it again!

Good Bday dinner

By RicMim |

Went here with a party of 7 for my daughters bday. This was our first time eating Japanese BBQ which is apparently very similar to Korean BBQ. The meat that was served for us to grill at the table was fresh and a good variety. We also ordered additional meat-lamb chops and scallops. Our waitress was very helpful with the menu and provided great service. The grill was really smokeless, the smoke would get sucked underneath the grill while cooking.

Bar on the second floor

By DublinKH |

Since I was by myself, I went to their bar area which is located on the second floor. There is a small counter for 5-6 people and several tables available. There are plenty of non grilled appetizers, noodles and salads. The bartender was very efficient and nice. Their happy hour menu is offered all day, but they are only $1 off.

Lunch

By Heritago |

This down town Chicago restaurant is run by Korean, and offer quite many dishes, but not as many like Korean place. For a Chicago downtown visitor wanting Korean food, this is the place.

Outstanding!

By BuckeyeAmanda |

Weekend in Chicago for daughters 16th birthday and this was the highlight of the weekend for everyone! Casual and delicious! Highly recommend!

It’s a rave!!

By Anonymous2093 |

5 Stars! We ordered for pick-up and were very impressed with the ease of ordering and seamless collection. The food was delish and the build your own bento box was a great value! At $19.99 you got the entree of meat and rice plus a soup and side salad. We ordered pork belly, skirt steak and the beef short rib meats which were all excellent. We will likely choose to order from here again soon!

Good food but no so good service

By AlexisRF |

This place is packed all the time. So you better be ready to wait. There is a good reason why. If you like good food and are not too particular with the service then this is the place to go. We had the chili shrimp dumpling - super yum, salmon bibimbap - very yum. For the grill we had the enoki mushroom which was a really delicious surprise, I would skip the shitake next time. The garlic shrimp is a big favorite, we had multiple orders of this. The Ahi poke is not so good, I would skip that next time. I didnt care much for service, water was never refilled, our request for utensils were forgotten. If it werent for the so so service, this place would have gotten 4 stars from me.

Interesting dining experience

By pineapplepam |

Gyu-Kaku is an unusual dining experience. Food is cooked on a grill at the table. Quality and selection is very good, if a little overpriced. The restaurant is very noisy and the night we were there, very young children were crying and running about.

Love it!!!!

By Desi A |

Went here for lunch deals & based on a recommendation from friend. Truly didn’t disappoint, installed their app and take advantage of their points/offers. They even let your group to redeemed multiple points so it’s really you can get abundance of foods. We found their beefs tasted much better than porks options. Everything that we ordered was mouth watering. Love it! Will definitely go back with more friends/families.

It's the experience!

By Living Free |

Part of the fun of Gyu Kaku is the ability to cook your own food. If you don't like this self-serving concept, gyu kaku is probably just a meh for you. For me, I absolutely love cooking the meat on the grill. Service was great for us, place was more on the loud side but didn't bother us. The food was excellent.

Incredible dining experience!

By alj5702 |

What a great surprise!!! If you have never enjoyed Japanese barbeque please visit Gyu Kaku in the magnificent mile area of Chicago. The wait is well worth it due to the popularity of the restaurant please stay the service, food and cook yourself experience is something you have to do!!! For a great price you can select your meats grill them and add to your complimentary rice, salad and soup. It was my first time but hopefully not my last. Enjoy. Al J.

We Wouldn't Return

By PrairiePaddler |

Our waiter was friendly and welcoming but overall this was a disappointing experience. Maybe the interactive appeal of placing your own food on the grill would be good fare for children's birthday parties or bridal showers, but it was tedious for the person among our group who tended to the food prep and not really all that interesting or appealing when all was said and done. And for what we paid we could have had fine authentic fare elsewhere. The seating is uncomfortable. I left feeling we'd wasted an evening dining opportunity.

Great And tasty BBQ

By Kat E |

I loved the concept of having a barbecue in the middle of the table to grill our food, it made the experience enjoyable. The meat quality was good and the seasoning very tasty. Slightly expensive but good overall. I will definitely return.

Terrible Experience

By jwscott1a2b |

Will never go back to Gyu-Kaku Chicago again. First the positives: 1) Seated right away for party of 10. 2) Server did a nice job. 3) Food was good when cooked the way we liked it. Now the terrible: 1) booth too small to seat 10 comfortably. 2) One of two grills at table was inconsistent even after three major interruptions during the meal. 3) Had to disrupt the dining experience of entire group as most of the meats had to be cooked on one of the two grills. 4) Very stressful experience for the entire group due to the grill performance issues. 5) Manager attempted without success to fix the grill issues. 6) Manager made some allowances for the terrible dining experience with the final bill but argued with group leaders about the performance of the grill. With great expectations the group went to Gyu-Kaku. Due to the grill issues and argument with the manager the great expectations turned into a horrible experience. Never again.

First timer

By amomof2 |

Stepped out of my box and decided to try this Japanese Bbq. It was a great experience, we were explained how long to grill each item and the waiter was as attentive as he possibly could have been..they were extremely busy. The food was delicious and I would definitely return!

Pricey for having to cook it yourself

By PaigeYYZ |

We opted for a la carte. I've had better Korean BBQ for a much lower price. It's a fun experience and anything grilled with that char flavour is so tasty. Portion sizes are decent but we are Canadian so used to smaller portions. Service is good and it's definitely a popular spot - just be prepared to cook your own food!

Meet in weird garnish

By Agnes |

The waiting time was over an hour, but menu looked nice and my friends recommended this place. I have to admit that having a grill as a part of your dining table is not that common experience. Unfortunately this type of seasoning and garnish is completely not my style. Even the (ramen type) soup was just ok. Last, but not least the lightening in the restaurant was way too intensive. I really felt like putting sunglasses on (at about 8 pm).

Average japanese BBQ

By teo a |

been to many japanese BBQ worldwide. food is fresh and service is good . however the food taste average

Fun time had by all

By Jiggy |

Fun times are had by all who frequent this establishment. If you're into a unique dinning experience where you get to cook your own food then you'll really enjoy this place. Kind of eccentric dining, but fun. Enjoy some sake with your raw meets - unsure what or how much to order - try their pre-built platters for easy ordering.

Meat lovers with a twist

By Elari2019 |

We visit often the two locations in a Miami. We wanted to compare and also we were very hungry and wanted to go for a familiar restaurant. Glad we did. The dynamic of the restaurant is different. It has three floors. We went to the second floor. Great service. Fast and friendly. Food was excellent. Glad to find a consistency in the restaurants. This place is better if you are ready to “work” a little because you are the one responsible for the food being cooked to your like. If you ask for several types of meat and vegetables, there is a point that the grill gets oily and you are entitled to request a new one. Quick change and big difference on the meat. Mushrooms are so good and so is the green tea crepe cake .... from heaven!!

Good value/ a ton of food.

By Lauri P |

This was fun, the waiter brings your food items out and you grill your food on the grill inside of your table.

Fun and Delicious

By Tomifer213 |

Great spot to enjoy some delicious Korean BBQ with friends. It's kind of like fondu where you have a grill at your table and you can choose which meats you would like and grill them yourself. They have other options that are prepared in their kitchen as well, but it's not nearly as fun!

Slow Start but Progressed Well

By Rob Lippman |

I was able to get a table mid-week immediately. Getting a server to help me was a fifteen minute stay in Purgatory. Thankfully that was the only hiccup. I opted for AYCE premium. Gorged myself over an hour and left full and satisfied. There is a wide array of food to be chosen that you cook. You really can't go wrong here. A great experience.

Very affordable, delicious lunch!

By Carla M |

We were looking for something a little different for lunch but would not break the bank. This fit the bill. The food was great and their lunch special was about $15.00 per person.

Terrific fast lunch

By Mark L |

Classic grill-it-yourself style Asian restaurant. They have nice vegetable and meat options for lunch. Food arrives quickly, and tastes great. If you have never been to this style restaurant before, don't worry - your server will explain things. I found the flavors quite Japanese authentic to me, and others must agree as the majority of diners were Asian. If I lived in Chicago I would frequent this place!

Mid Summer in Chi

By Shetravels5109 |

I Love this place. Just discovered a new location near Lincoln Park/Lakeview! Yayy. It doesn’t get any better than thinly sliced Kobe Beef over an open flame!

Your own grill!

By Clevlander |

This is an interesting Japanese style restaurant where the interesting aspect is that they bring the ingredients ready to grill in your own table grill to cook your own food. Happy hour is about 20% off Mon-Thrs until 6 pm and after 9:30 pm. Very Japanese, and lots of Japanese tourists waiting in line when we were there which is a good sign!

A welcome new experience

By Erik N |

A colleague and I decided on Gyu-Kaku for lunch because "Japanese BBQ" was something neither of us had ever tried. We quickly realized how far over our heads we'd gone as we looked around at seats all facing personal BBQ grills. The menu was challenging for us, as we were unfamiliar with the many cuts of meat on offer (not to mention the various ramen and other dishes). However, our waiter (Nathan) was extremely helpful, and personable. He walked us through several options (we chose the base lunch BBQ package - party platter) and made a personal recommendation to upgrade the rice to beef bibimbap. The food arrived in waves, with a nice miso soup and salad up first. Cuts of meat soon followed, and Nathan explained how long each should be left to grill. As daunting as it seemed at first, the first bite of beef proved the worth of the concept. Each and every dish we sampled was a pleasure to the palette, and that bibimbap was legitimately the best rice I have ever eaten. The whole affair was wrapped up with a marshmallow-roasting S'more opportunity, which I thought was a great western touch to make use of the grill. They thoughtfully wait to hand you towelettes until after you've had your marshmallows. Im summary, we had excellent food and service. It's bit of work to get through the meal (don't eat here in a rush, or with folks whose company you don't enjoy), but well worth the effort. The menu may look daunting, but you'll be comfortable here even if you eat your Japanese food with a fork (as my colleague did)

This place is a hoot!

By Travelmama1219 |

The menu is amazing and the whole experience is so different and fun. Come hungry because the food just keeps coming and you BBQ your own food (meats and vegetables) to your taste. Loved it!

Nice Japanese grill

By yuanwai |

The place is good, with decent food --- meat variety is good and the service is good. The price is extremely reasonable. No wander there are so many students around, which is also why it can be noisy. The selection of the sake can be improved, especially the house sake. Overall a good place and will be back again.

Amazing!

By Kelsey S |

A great lunch, and super cheap. We installed the mobile app and instantly received a $10 coupon for free Toro Beef. Would def come back again!

Change the information trip advisor! Arrived late in Chicago and was looking forward to eating here....and we waited in the front to be seated. Workers walk by and don’t even acknowledge us until I ask if I can be seated. Nope. They’re closed.

Great time

By SunnyTrvlLvr |

Had a wonderful time here with two other couples. Nice to be able to try different or new items as the individual protein portions are small and more than one is needed to satisfy a regular appetite. There is some work involved as you cook your own food at the table, but it is a fun experience.

Enjoyed dining experience

By Kat M |

Wonderful dining experience. Excellent food (lamb chops were are fav), especially loved interactive experience of grilling at the table. Awesome drinks. Great customer service.

Great Fun & Great Food

By GBCheesehead |

This was my first time here, and it was a treat! Suggest getting reservations if you want to try it! Many different dining options...we did the meat lovers for 6 and we all left full. They have a full bar with lots of specialty drinks and during February had beer special on a Japanese beer - $5 for a 33 oz mug! Non-stop cooking, eating and visiting...I would suggest giving this place a try!

Nice for a group of friends

By dh1952 |

Gyu-Kaku is a favorite for our business associates when we are in town. The menu offer a nice variety of meats such as steak, chicken, shrimp, lamb as well as some interesting and authentic sides. Be sure to include some plum wine with your dining and go for the s'mores to top it all off. All in all, a nice experience especially for a group.

What a Fantastic Place!

By Lana L |

I was visiting Chicago for a couple of days, and my friend recommended this restaurant. The food and the service were outstanding. We ordered Shogun meal at the price of $120,00 and it was more than enough for the 5 of us! I loved the complimentary dessert we got - make it yourself S'mores.

Great for groups

By Candace F |

Ive been here several times food is good they offer happy hour & they have packages for groups/couples. Very affordable but i highly recommend making a reservation thurs-sun

WOW. Lovely Little hideaway

By ewottermann |

Great little hideaway in Chicago with wonderful appetizers and beer during happy hour. Loved It and will return

We kept going back

By devicentem |

We spent one week in Chicago this summer and ended up going three times. It is really nice meat wonderfully marinated and at a very reasonable price. The set menus also work quite well. Ambiance is nice enough and it is a nice family experience. We loved it!

good japanese/korean style bbq in downtown

By Sean K |

Ok, if you are NOT familiar with asian bbq, and want to try in downtown, this is pretty good place. however, if you are seeking authentic asian bbq, and prefers old style, you can find better place. standard meat combo, bbq grill on the table, nothing special and decent service. Nothing bad, but nothing spectacular, a bit pricey, and noodle was disappointing.

Food was as good as the experience

By Stephanie S |

Such a fun eating experience. Restaurant has a great feel. We ordered the meat lovers and everything was awesome! I would absolutely go again

Anniversary Dinner

By Susan B |

The outside made us a bit skeptical, for our first visit, but the food was amazing. We ordered the chefs choice and it was enough food for the two of us.

amazing food

By Sue W |

thanks for the food and service! My suggestion is that you should not forget to use the app to accumulate the points

Uniquely Satisfying

By Falcon65Kevin |

My wife and I found this unique place. The name Japanese BBQ sounded interesting, and this was a great choice. We chose the sampler and cooked it ourselves on the grill between us. It was a fun experience and the food was excellent the staff helpful in explaining our choices

Fun experience

By DublinKH |

On weekday nights, they offer all you can eat in 90 minutes. There are three choices starting at $45 pp. We only needed 60-70 minutes for not ordering. This restaurant used to be very crowded, but it was not as very busy. I had a reservation and we probably still needed it. The service was great so as foods. We really enjoyed it.

Love this place!

By Howard D |

We went here for my Birthday dinner on Monday and the experience was amazing! The food is tasty and the service is awesome. I think everyone needs to try this place at least once! I'll be back soon for sure!

Great Asian

By Flyby0161 |

Great place for many selections of fresh Asian grilled - cook at your pace with your own grille. Friendly service, marinated beefs, with reasonable price. Perfect place

Good stop, tasty eats

By Albyfli |

Rather last minute choice and was able to make reservations for 5:30pm and it a good thing to do for they fill up fast. First time for me and pleasantly surprised. Very good service, they have it spot on. Ordered the all you can eat, interesting way they do that, a time limit is imposed as it prolly should be on all buffets, might help cut down on the waistlines of some.? Anyway, they bring out what you want and you fry it up in front of you. No worries on how long for each type of food for they tell you when it's delivered. The fried rice is hot and fresh! As is all the food. I'd say it's a med or med high price range but well worth it. Bath rooms (second floor) are a single use, so, if busy a trip down the steps and yer fine. Easy to find via cab or Uber or lyft. I'll be back...

Highly overated. Do other reviewers not know good Japaense food?

By champagnesally |

I had never eaten Japanese BBQ before, but love Asian food and eat Japanese food all the time, so thought I would try it while I was in town for business. The reviews seems to say the food was excellent, but service was slow. I booked a table based on the reviews of others. We got there early and we sat waiting for our table. They seemed to forget about us and we had to ask a few times when our table was ready. They eventually sat us. Our server talked us through the menu and we ordered something for two. The only thing that was really good was the dynamite roll. Everything else had no flavour, was cheap cuts of meat and was not worth 1/2 of what we paid. We tried to order a bottle of wine too. They let us sample the whites on offer and they were all terrible. So we ended up with water. We kept looking around the restaurant and everyone seemed to be loving the food? My colleague and I were shocked! We can only assume that the people eating there have never had good Japanese food before. I travel a lot and I guess I am lucky to have tasted high quality Asian foods. So if you have not been so luck you may like it, but if you know what good Japanese food should taste like, chose somewhere else.

Fun with food!

By Kathy D |

We wanted to try something different while traveling out of town and this place was perfect! The service was friendly, the food was delicious, and the price was very reasonable! You will definitely need to make reservations though

Incredible $15 combo dinner

By Oliver T |

We stayed at the Aloft hotel and this location is the same block. We walked in and it was completed booked for the BBQ. But the seating area in the 2nd flood bar section had plenty of seating. We just wanted to get the ramen anyways so it was perfect for us. We couldn't believe what you could get with the $15 combo for dinner. I got the house sake, pork dumplings, and spicy chigae ramen. And it also came with a salad. Our server apparently was a busser who was stepping in a server. Israel didn't know what meat was in the ramen when I asked him, but he asked someone else. He was a really nice and chatted when he was free. Food quality was great and the house sake was very nice. This is probably the best deal for dinner in all of Chicago. Glad we found this place.

Delicious Dinner

By Brianne E |

My husband and I visited earlier this month and it was fantastic! We ordered a prixe fixe menu for two and a bottle of wine. It was such a great selection of different types meat; it also included soup, salad, rice and a sushi roll. Our waitress was a delight. If we’re back in Chicago I would definitely go again.

Take my money!

By MoranCarlisle |

Having never eaten at a place like this before, we did not know what we were doing. We quickly figured it out, and we had a blast. Good food, good service, and good times.

Not exactly Yakiniku

By bcsystems |

We came here for dinner to celebrate Father's Day. There are multiple floors and we ventured up 3 floors to have BBQ. There were a wide variety of meats and veggies for BBQ. There were also combination packages too. While I was hoping there be more exotic items like liver, heart, kidney, etc., there was beef tongue that I found to be good. The pork belly was almost excellent. I find in general a slightly fatty meat is best for BBQ. Overall, I don't find too much diference between this and Korean BBQ.

Fantastic Experience

By Ttttraveler |

We stopped here for lunch on Christmas Eve. I'm so glad that we made reservations. It was packed. Our waitress was fantastic at explaining the process since this was our first time. The food was outstanding. I will say that the food was slow in coming to the table. Our lunch took two hours. We will definitely return the next time we are in Chicago! By the way, we were the only non-Asians in the restaurant.

delicious... for all tastes!

By JasFu |

Guy Kaku offers a wide range of very high quality food that you can cook according to your own preference. We decided to go for the Ronin 55$ menu for 2 which included, amongst the others: dumplings, miso soup, rice (upgrade it for 3$ extra, you'll love it!) sirloin, filet mignon, NY strip steak, Toro beef... Everything was DELICIOUS and definitely abundant! You can also choose many oriental specialties (noodles, rice, dumplings, soups, rolls) as well as several BBQ items (beef, poultry, pork, lamb, seafood, vegetables) à la carte. Most recommended dessert: S'mores! A delicious combo of marshmallows, chocolate and cookies. Downside: for big groups the menu is fixed, but if you ask the waiters you might be allowed to split into different tables and use the normal menu. We'll definitely be back!

Fun dining experience

By Osugrad94 |

My wife and I stopped in here for a late lunch on a Tuesday afternoon and the place was still somewhat busy we were able to be seated right away and I’ll server was very good about going over the menu we chose a different variety of meat to grill soup and potstickers and also they have a huge bar and tons of craft beer overall was pretty good dining experience we will definitely do it again.

Very neat restuarant....however very loud.

By RScottN |

This is the first time I've eaten at a restaurant like this. I went with my wife and we had fun cooking our own food on the table top grill. Food was excellent and we got a lot of food. The service was also fantastic. The grils are vented below them so there is no smoke or smell from it. The atmosphere was really neat as it was in an old building. However, it is not a restaurant for couples! There were many groups of people there and it was very, very, very loud. The upstairs have booths next to each other with just a small separation and you hear everything from the table next to you. It would have been fun had we been with a group of friends. But as a couple it was hard to talk and honestly I had a headache from the noise in the end. I'm not sure it was the accoustics of the building or just that there were a lot of groups there....but it was loud.

Awesome Meal!

By The World is My Oyster |

I wished I had gone there sooner! This place is great and very authentic! Our server Monique took good care of us throughout the entire meal. We opted to go for the family meal for 4 people which was way more then enough. The filet was outstanding and so were the other meats on there. The rice and noodles were also very flavorful and delicious! I can't wait to be back again!

Dinner in July 2018

By K T |

Visited Guy-Kaku on Ohio street in DT Chicago in July 2018. We made a reservation and got seated right after arriving to the booth on the second floor. Service was attentive, food was tasty, and price was reasonable. The only negative thing was we smelt like bbq after dinner.

Fun and delicious

By historiasdelviaje |

The lunch special is great. 2 or 3 meat choices, including salad, rice and soup. Visited with a group of friends and we all had a great time grilling our own food! Service can be a little slow so don't be in a rush and enjoy the ambience! A five star!

Great!

By Ryan L |

Truly delicous and great service aswell! One of the best japanese barbaceus Ive had in Chicago. The Saito was delicous.

An interesting dinning experience

By fhernan1 |

We visited this restaurant nearby our Chicago hotel not knowing what to expect and were positively surprised. Basically you cook your own food in a grill situated in the middle of the table (so you are responsible for the final outcome), depending on your selection you get a good variety of proteins and vegetables to grill, the ingredients are of good quality (you can even upgrade to Kobe grade beef, but the price was not attractive to us). The wine selection is very limited, might be better to stay with beer. Would visit again in the future.

Excellent Japanese BBQ

By raevenx |

Incredibly authentic. Brought us right back to our fond memories of Tokyo restaurants. Great food, good service. Very reasonable lunch special. Will definitely be back!

What's not to like?

By Nene43 |

My first Japanese barbeque experience. Enjoyed it! Loved the variety. There are plenty of options to share and you can just add more if you are not satisfied. My girlfriend and I decided to share the fish bowl drink and it was more for 4 than 2. Worth a try!

Real Japanese food!

By Naukm |

Prices are reasonable! Really worth the money we spent. Foods were really delicious and great!!!!! Will definitely be back soon!!!

Amazing Japanese food

By Nitin M |

Nice choices of Japanese BBQ food, at expensive end though. I liked their pork sausage crispy rice. they also have good drinks collection

Fun and delicious

By Addie W |

Delicious food, fun to cook. Our favorites were the karage chicken, kalbi, and 21-day skirt steak. We had one appetizer, 5 meats, and 2 veggies, which was filling but still felt light.

Delicious k-bbq in the centre of DT Chicago!

By ReisendeKiwi |

I came here for their lunch menu where you could choose three different kinds of meat to grill. It was all very delicious and the service was excellent. The only dish that needs improving is their tofu stew which uses minced meat and tastes a bit strange. I would recommend the bbq!

Meat and more meat

By SPEL1990 |

We wanted to visit here after reading reviews. It's an authentic setting and you can cook your own food on the grill. We ordered the Ronin for 2 between 3 of us and it was more than enough. You can't eat too quickly as you are waiting for your food to cook. We had to wait to be seated but it was worth it. Real chop sticks would be a good addition rather than the wooden disposable ones. We recommend a visit.

Excellent meal, casual setting, super value

By Qubein |

It’s our first experience at a Japanese BBQ Restaurant. The setting was modest and simple but the food was excellent and the service was also great. We had an early bird special menu for $60 for two and a nice bottle of Sami for $11. What a super deal for the amount of quality food you get. I didn’t realize it was a franchise but non the less it was a great experience that we look forward to again and again

Must visit

By Lou ONeil |

Decided to grab lunch here, before our flight back home! It was a hella smart decision! Lunch specials and early happy hour prices on a lot of the items on the menu!!! Our lunch combo order was plenty and it was satisfying! 3 meats, soup, salad, and rice for $15?! Sign me up!!!!! The servings was enough to leave your stock both happy and upset! Happy because it's full of delicious food and upset, because there's no more room! Beer and cocktail specials were on point too! If we didn't have to catch a flight, I would have gotten plastered! ‍

Japanese American style, very good!

By Pieter P |

a real pleasure to go here with a group and share the different possibilities, it really makes it an excellent experience with very good food, real service and a reasonable price.

Delicious food

By 4GrauBlauSky |

Nice restaurant, centrally located one block from Magnificent Mile at E Ohio St. It is always advised to make a reservation. However if you don't have a reservation and there are no available tables to enjoy the BBQ, you have two options, you can eat simple dishes at the small bar in the second floor or you can ask certain food, such as as bibimbap and even green tea mochi ice cream to take away. Since we didn't have enough time to enjoy the BBQ, we ordered a bibimbap and a spicy tofu chigae. Both really tasty and delicious. Service was excellent and fast. We really enjoy our time there. Hopefully next time we can enjoy the BBQ.

Very exciting and different experience!

By Azcane12 |

No wifi at this hot spot -- sit back and enjoy your BBQ with the art of conversation! This restaurant gets packed and offers a ton of dining options. Even if you have up 5-6 people in your group, there are convenient options for you to devour! The "Meat Lovers" offers an explosive quantity of quality cuts along with garlic shrimp, chicken and pork. The servers were pleasant and the managers were helpful when accommodating any food allergies. They have an interesting selection of drinks and very affordable sake! There are "all you can eat" options starting at $35/pp and $45/pp -- but it should be noted that there is a 90 minute time limit imposed along with these dining choices.

First time visit and it was very good

By The_Lankan |

We could not get a reservation between 6pm-8pm because they were fully booked. They only had a reservation for two of us at 5pm so we took it. We had never eaten here before but happy that we tried it. This place is known for being an all you can eat Japanese BBQ but there are other options and you can order different packages and also add a la carte options. We both decided on the Premium All you can eat option which allows you to select from 37 different items (see pic). Keep in mind if you are dining with a group of people and one person wants an all you can eat option, the rest of the people at the table must also have that option. Everything we ordered from the Premium option was great. Our favorites were the Kalbi Chuck Rib and Pork Belly. There were three sauces on the table but we didn’t use any of them because everything was marinated and already delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpful and answered all our questions. Keep in mind that you will be cooking all of the food you order using the grill on your table. I recommend this place and we will be back again to try something different.

If you can't go to Tokyo for lunch, then stop in this very authentic and suitably exciting uptown spot. The dedicated customer service was refreshing; menu suggestions and cooking instruction were readily offered. The freshness of the chicken and beef allowed for the ease of grill duties and yielded the best possible taste and satisfaction. Simply Irresistible.

This is a nice stop for a group of friends for an enjoyable active dinner. They have a grill in the middle of the table so you can grill your meal to your liking. Our group had a booth towards the back. Someone had recommended this place. We all had the meat selection: chicken, shrimp, beef etc. Everyone had plenty. It is a good idea to go will friends or a group, the prices are upper mid-range. Staff were responsive, the grill grating was replaced at least three times, it does get full of meat spillover. This place would be somewhere to stop in again in the future.

The best Japanese bbq ever!!!!

By ljpc_10 |

My friends and I went to this Japanese bbq restaurant on Monday night. They have unlimited bbq all you can eat! For $59 + tax, I can say it’s worth every penny!!! Kudos to the chef of this place. It’s a must try when you visit downtown Chicago! Not to mention the mouth watering Greentea ice cream, it’s like heaven!!! Will definitely come back!!

Great place for group date night!

By HTC |

With late reservations, we closed down the restaurant with the meat lovers and the sake bomb options! Three pitchers of beer and two bottles of sake went down easily paired with the great cuts of meat. We highly recommend ordering an extra order of Kobe or going Kobe all the way! The kalbi was excellent, too! Last note...The starter chicken wings were amazing! Wish we had more of the crispy, spicy sweet goodness!

Do the AYCE option

By Nerissa T |

The post-lunch food coma is real. Came with a few friends and we decided to do the $45 all you can eat premium (47 items to choose from) and oh what a great choice that was #noregrets. They also have a $55 option with a bigger selection... be sure to wear your stretchy pants. We were seated upstairs in a zashiki style sitting area with one grill between the 6 of us. Let's just say, more than enough food was ordered over the span of 90 minutes. The beef tongue was surprisingly one of my favorite meats that we ordered along with the spicy pork and harami miso skirt steak. As for the non-grilling items, I really liked the garlic noodles and fried pork dumplings. Lucky for us there was a snow festival special going on so pitchers of Sapporo were only $10 each. To finish off our meal, we got the mochi ice cream, green tea ice cream, and s'mores. Ended up being about $60 per person, which was quite pricy for lunch but totally worth it. Gyu-Kaku is definitely a fun place to come with friends!

Great idea

By laura |

I had never been to a place where you can grill at will not only meat and fish but also vegetables. Great idea to share a dinner that isn't hamburger. Local not very large but well organized. Friendly and helpful staff to explain how their menu works. You can choose whether to order a la carte or all you can eat. We opted for the à la carte menu. We had 3 types of meat, shrimp, asparagus and zucchini. The cooking is up to you. To try

Absolutely delicious dinner for $60!!!

By C C |

My husband and I had the pleasure to dine at the ever so popular Gyu Kaku (Streeterville location). Our suggestion is call and make a dinner reservation the day before to avoid the 2-hr wait or worse not being able to eat there. Our server suggested the Meat Lovers on the menu which had a great variety of BBQ meats and other starters. It was our first time at Gyu Kaku but it won’t be the last for sure. Absolutely fantastic!!!

Great Japanese Grill

We were walking by after visiting the Jane Addams Park and wanted to have grill Japanese for dinner. We sat outside the patio grilling and it was tasty. The drinks were great too! Our server was friendly and attentive. We had a great time!

A different experience

By snaggledraws54 |

Having seen this in a brochure we thought it may be something different. It is a very different dining experience, where you cook your food at the table. Vegetables were very fresh but a little bit light on, the first lot of beef that was recommended was a little bit chewy. The second lot of beef was great, we ordered the eye fillet and it didn’t disappoint. We booked as the first night we didn’t and could not get a table. All in all it was an interesting dinner

Great Meal

By momandktravel |

We loved this place! Waiter recommended ramen (I forget which one) but the flavor was amazing. Crunchy tuna roll was really delicious. Grilled meat was tender and flavorful with tasty dipping sauces. Highly recommend!

Didn't work for us

By johnhansen1977 |

Maybe we should have waited till our kids were older, but this place didn't seem too kid friendly to us. We were told the wait was 5 - 8 mins, but waited 12 mins and were seated upstairs where we were away from the general public. Our kids kept wanting to touch the giant grill in the table and there weren't actual baby chairs for our nine month old. We decided to leave before someone got burned.

A Great Japanese Experience.

By Junaid |

Excellent service, good, friendly service. So much easier to do a barbecue at your table compared with what you’d do if you wanted to do it at home. Good ambience and all in all a fun place to eat.

Zagat rated Japanese Cook your own meat

By Kathy M |

We have walked by Gyu-Kaku many times in Streeterville and finally decided to stop today for their lunch special. Amazing! We didn't realize how good the meal was going to be, or we would have dined here sooner and often. The hostess asked if we had reservations (at lunch?). We did not, but she seated us immediately anyway. Our server was attentive, and explained everything on the menu. There are lunch hour specials and happy hour specials that you can also choose at lunch...so you're pretty much covered for a tasty reasonably priced dining experience. We ordered one person meal of the BBQ with 3 meat choices and chose 3 types of beef cuts...tender delicious morsels to cook on our own hot grill and dip in 3 different sauces. This comes with rice, miso soup and salad. They also have chicken and pork - really a much larger selection than I can remember to list. We also had the lunch special appetizers of Tuna volcano roll, shrimp dumplings, and Citrus salmon appetizers. This was plenty of food for two and we skipped the soup and rice that came with the BBQ. Everything was delicious! We will be back but if we come for dinner, we will definitely make reservations as people were lined up waiting when we left.

Activity based dining

I like the concept of enjoying the food while you cook it. It's just like barbecue at home with friend but indoor 😊. Visited it twice while in Chicago for business trips. Lots of variety and both lunch and dinner where good, Lunch options where reasonable priced with lot of options. My favorite garlic rice with crust on bottom. Overall it was fun experience and good food. Would recommend it if you are looking for something different along with dining.

Incredible experience- great fiid

By joeboo16 |

Cam the host was amazing and accommodated 12 of us at two tables next to each other. Cooking at your own table made it an enjoyable experience for all - kids loved it! Our waitress Jazmin was just as accommodating. Both employees great with the kids. Food was amazing!!! The variety of appetizers - wings were so good. The meats to grill were just as yummy. Dessert - yum!!!! So worth the money!!!!!

A great visit

Had a great experience for my wife's birthday. Food was great, prices ok, staff very friendly and helpful and had no issues at all and would return when returning to Chicago. I did however email and request a surprise birthday cake/muffin for my wife which they forgot to serve after replying to my email.

Yum!!

I love both locations in the city!! Tasty food and a unique experience! Wait times are shorter in the west loop.

Loved being my own personal chef today

By Tantra Butterfly |

Eating lunch here was the highlight of my day and I absolutely enjoyed grilling my own meat 🍖 and spending as much time here (unrushed) as I wanted simply enjoying my meal and relaxing. I arrived here at 11:30 AM assuming I'd be able to grab a light bento lunch; but unfortunately the manager Bryan informed me it's a very busy holiday week here so he encouraged me to wait till 1:30 and he'd have a table for me before or at that time. I'm so happy I chose the individual bbq lunch because it was light enough for me to able to finish yet still left me extremely satisfied. There are plenty of meat options so I decided upon the garlic shrimp 🍤 and thinly sliced beef. I even added a side of mushrooms 🍄 that I could grill and yummy s'mores as a little dessert. My server Jess was so cheerful and happy to give me cooking instructions so I wouldn't over cook or under cook my meat choices. Miso soup, an incredible house salad 🥗 and bowl of white rice 🍚 accompanies the BBQ for one. In my opinion this is the most entertaining and delicious option especially if you love to cook your own meal. The ambiance here is cozy, cheerful and so welcoming. This is the type of setting that's casual enough to really relax and enjoy some extremely delicious comfort foods. The best part of dining here was being fully able to enjoy a BBQ meal by myself without worrying that I'd have leftover food I couldn't possibly finish. I will definitely come back here again for lunch and I do recommend calling in advance for reservations because this restaurant can get busy and a lot of the locals come here often. Looks like I'm going to be a new regular too!

Virgin Japanese barbecue

By Steady2015 |

My older brother John finally decided to pick a place for dinner, and he chose gyu-kaku. He's been to a few places like this before, although this is my first time! We had to take off our shoes before being seated, which I didn't mind because its customary! Our waitress, who's name was Yu, seated us and explains all the do and don't! We enjoyed ourselves very much, and will do that again! They have two restaurants with the same name in Boston!

Wait too long to have a table

By LNKHN |

We went there to put our name due to long queue. We was told to come back in 1.5 hours. We came back 30 minutes earlier so we had to wait. We ordered a number of dishes such as miso soup, salad, bibimbap, fried chicken and fried pork and beef. Those dishes are tasty and beef is juicy. We like the food here.

Fun place

By Jonathan L |

Went with a large group for dinner where we were seated on the 3rd floor in one of the rooms. We ordered the "meat lovers" spread and there was more then enough food to go around for 11 of us. Granted we had to cook most of it ourselves but that's part of the fun (and it makes you eat slower!). All in all very enjoyable and the service was very very good.

Great experience

By Lisbeth |

Great place, dinner with friends. Kind staff, they explained very well how to make our Japanese bbq. Full recommended.

Unaccomodating Host/ hostesses

By Eric_generic |

Top quality japanese bbq items, amazing deal on all-you-can-eat, casual and trendy vibe, friendly and efficient servers, uber friendly and accommodating manager( his name is Paul) BUT they unbelievable how they've come up with an extremely rude and unaccommodating team of hosts and hostesses. These people are in the wrong business. I dine here with my family on a regular basis( only because I happen to love the food) and they've been consistently rude from day one. I don't know their names but show them to me and I can tell you who they are and what they've done! Infuriating!!!

Cool Korean BBQ Spot!

By Amie Travels |

Must try an all you can eat for a designated time, delicious & unique Korean barbecue. The dishes needs to be cooked at a table-side big grill. A designated time table is set in order to eat how much one can enjoy! Lots of meat options are available with vegetable sides as well. This place can be reserved for a special occasion or a normal day, very versatile. Be sure to try the s’mores at the end! Like my photos and reviews? Fantastic service and great food!

By Michael S |

My daughter started college last month in the city. She dined with a friend and liked it so much she brought us back. Richard the manager remembered her and introduced himself and made the dinner special! The food and flavors work really well together. We got the Meat Lovers for 2 and added a couple of seafood options and sides. Plenty of food for 4. The S’more dessert really topped it off. Cooking everything at the table ourselves was a lot of fun!

Fun Dinner

By Hope L |

Loved the food and concept. Picked a few meats and vegetables to grill. Their Chicken garlic Noodles were so good we got 3 orders! Fun and delicious.

Interesting concept eating

By Travelling Middleberry |

It was my first time eating like this. I would have preferred watching someone cook my food than have to cook my food over a tricky grill on my table. I left hungry and wanting a snack despite the amount of orders we had. The food portions are small and almost disappear once cooked. The food was average and service was good. Frankly too much work for so little food for me. Thank god they had beer otherwise I would have eaten my napkin. The floodlights at the table were not my favourite. All in all would not do this again.

great meal

By lpm300 |

Japanese grill (yakiniku) type restaurant. We had the "eat all you can menu" and we were not disappointed. Service was excellent and food was good. Come early as this place fills up quick. Be aware that whatever you are wearing will smell like the restaurant

We came here twice in 5 days!

By VarnTeing |

I love the food here. Their meat r soo yummy but generally expensive. Must try their shrimps and their recommended beef. The spicy pork was yummy too. Remember to make a reservation, i had to wait almost an hour the first visit

Amazing!

By 13mfr |

We walked right in and got sat on a Sunday night at about 6:30-7pm. The server did a great job of explaining the menu and options. We ordered a bit of everything, 5 cuts of beef, shrimp, chicken, pork, lamb, veggies, shrimp noodles, rice, and smores. It was all amazing and fun to get to cook it family style! Price was about $140 for everything with a few beers and soda and we had a lot of food and even more fun.

Yum!

By DrP |

Variety and quality of meat are very good. They come to change your grilling plate frequently to make sure it's clean. The fire was fierce and you can control how much "char" you want on the meat, and also quickly cook thinly sliced steak when you are hungry. It was both fun and delicious. Lady M layered crepe cake is a bonus at the end.

Japanese/Asian fusion comfort food in Streeterville

By Tantra Butterfly |

Gyu Kaku BBQ has such a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere that I truly enjoy my visits not just for the food but for the laid back surroundings. I always come here for the lunch specials and visited twice within the same week because there are so many food options and everything I order is absolutely delicious. A few days ago I tried the Ramen set which is a very generous portion of pork chashu with broth and noodles, a salad and two gyozo. I presented my excellent and attentive server Nina with a coupon I received last month for a free appetizer and she brought me a yummy roast beef "sushi" with Wasabi on the side. Today I wanted to try the Sukiyaki Bimbimbap which is served in a hot pan with crispy rice and grilled beef. A salad accompanies the dish and 2 steamed gyozo. I had another coupon and received spicy, garlic shrimp so I grilled it at my table and added it to my delicious Bimbimbap. The servers here all help eachother out and each person I've met is extremely sweet and attentive. I've forgotten some of the names of the hosts and servers; but everyone I've met is genuinely welcoming! Michael, one the chefs that works here even came out of the kitchen to introduce himself to me. I really feel good supporting a restaurant that cares about their customers and prepares meals with love. I'm so lucky I live just a few short blocks away from this Streeterville location and I especially enjoy cooking my own S'mores at the table grill for dessert. I will continue to come here again and again because it's so relaxing and the food is incredible!

Great food! Great experience!

By april1114 |

This is a great restaurant to go to when you are in Chicago and is craving Japanese food. I love how the restaurant is about a block or two away from Michigan Ave, so after you eat, you can go down on Michigan Ave to shop. The restaurant gets very busy on the weekends, so highly recommend reservations. Since I don't live near the city, I haven't been there during the week day or late nights. But I can tell you my experience during the weekends. It seems that every time we go, we always have fun. Service is good and the food is excellent. I love how you can cook on there grill and how they have different meat options. Menu isn't complicated and you really can't go with ordering anything. The food is really good and it really is a great experience to eat there!

Disappointing

By Daniel N |

The food was good, but there was hardly any meat in the soup that I ordered. I expected more of this place.

Authenticity wins

By VaporK8 |

I knew we would be eating authentic Korean Barbecue here when most of the patrons were young Koreans. Do make advanced reservations for immediate seating, especially on weekend nights. The place was loud and crowded - perfect for our toddler in tow! You can order meat that you’ll barbecue yourself, or order from the “ready-made” side of the menu. I’m not a big meat lover, however I really enjoyed the crispy chicken, avocado, egg salad immensely. Dessert selections were good too. Interesting ice cream and sorbet flavors!

Super tasty!

By @sanche38 |

We were looking for a place to eat appetizers before a later dinner. We came across Gyu-Kaku as we were walking. So glad there was a menu posted outside their door because the items sounded so good as we read the menu. As we entered, we were welcomed by two friendly host. We were short on time so we were glad to learn there was a bar on the second floor with immediate seating. We ordered the spicy addicting cucumber, miso chili wings, and fried bacon chips. All three items were FANTASTIC. We could have ordered double of each. We didn't realize, but it was happy hour so the appetizers were discounted. Our server, Israel was very kind and made recommendations for our future visit. We definitely will return. If their appetizers were super delicious, I can't imagine how great their main course items are.

Disappointing Experience

By pjoh1154 |

After having travelled extensively throughout Japan, I was looking forward to have “Authentic” Japanese food outside Japan. I chose this restaurant based on reviews but found my own experience disappointing. It started with a reservation made for 6.45pm. The staff were quick to tell us that the Set Menu was the best value to experience all the various dishes. We arrived at 6.40 to be told a table would be available in 5 Minutes, no problem, we sat down near the entrance. Shortly after others arrived who had not made a reservation to be told a 45 minute wait for food. The staff were also keen to push the set menu to all that stayed to wait for table. At 7.10pm our table was ready. Once seated our waiter approached to into himself, he was not Japanese and his English was very hard to understand, but again he pushed for the “set menu “. We agreed and ordered a drink. Approx 15 Minutes passed and an assortment of raw meats and vegetables arrived for us to self cook. The food presented to us looked smaller then what the menu showed but we started cooking. I must say, the food was not amazing but we continued on. My wife finished her food and whilst I still had a full plate of food in front of me, the set menu desert of Ice Cream arrived. I called over the waiter to which he said, don’t worry, he will bring another when I am ready. When you are paying good money for food you do not expect to be rushed and that’s how this whole experience felt to me. The food was edible but not amazing. The service was rushed. I would not recommend this restaurant but if you do go, do not have the set menu and cook your own. Japanese food is so tasty but only if cooked by qualified Japanese chefs. Why pay to cook yourself when you could save money by having the chef do it for you.

Tasty and Fun

By Zoxil |

The table has a grill in its center and your order assorted raw things that you grill to your taste, meats, veggies... its both tasty and a lot of fun. The food also arrives quickly (since they don't have to cook it!). Our family enjoyed both the food and the experience. The wait staff walks you through the menu and explains things clearly so you know what you are doing! I might not do this with small children as I would worry about them burning themselves (though I suppose if they were young enough that they could not reach the grill it's okay) but our 14 year old loved it! You could have a vegetarian meal here but I'm not sure it would be a first choice!

Great experience for something new!

By Budes65 |

This Japanese BBQ is different in that you cook your own meat and veggies. My wife and I got the Samari for two which included a variety of food for the two of us. Some of it was very good and some was different for our taste. Our waitress was very attentive and took care to instruct us of the cooking times for our items as well as what sauces would compliment the taste of our selections. It was a little spendy but you are in Chicago and the quality of the food was great. The idea is it was fun and different. I would definitely do it again, especially with friends.

Amazing food, and knowledgeable staff.

By Bryan_N23 |

I was hungry and wanted something different to eat other than Italian food. Stumbled across Gyu-Kaku!! Only mistake was not making a reservation!!! Please call and make one if you don't want to wait a hour to be seated. Once seated the experience I had was what I would expect from a great Japanese restaurant. Your meal can be as expensive or or as cheap as you like. Of course you will pay for the better quality meats and that's expected. Me and my friend ate and had a few drinks for under $75 but I mean we really ate a lot of food. Good drink prices and food choices galore. You can either have a quick meal or have a feast!! Oh and our waitress I think was a nice young lady named Sam!!! 👍🏽she knows her food!

Good, but Overpriced

By Michael M |

Gyu-kaku is fine for what it is; a grill-it-yourself Japanese/Korean mashup. Be sure you know how to judge the doneness of pork and poultry before you eat here. The meat is seasoned well, but everything is a bit overpriced for what it is. Expect to pay about $40-50 per person, before drinks, if you don't want to go away hungry. The Sunday evening happy hour was good, though: 50% off everything at the bar, including Japanese whiskey.

Authentic Japanese Yakiniku (grilled barbecue)

By Nils V |

Great food: selection of meat is wide, sides are also very good. Waiters are friendly and efficient. I really recommend this place to everyone looking for a (near to) perfect Japanese experience in Chicago...

Always busy always fun

By DublinKH |

We had a reservation at 5pm on Monday night. A couple without reservation walked in at the same time as me was told their first available time was 9:30pm. Their happy hour menu is not so great, but still nice discount. You have to seat only at the bar to get happy hour drink special. We ordered 5 meats and three vegetables and that was a good amount. At the end, we shared a sukiyaki bibimba, rice, to share. It was a perfect amount. Reservation is a must if you know when to go there. It is a great place to have fun and great foods.

Interesting concept

By Luvsviolet |

Being in the mood for some Japanese steakhouse, we found this place close to our hotel. The concept is that each table has a fire pit so you can cook your own meat. We weren't interested in cooking our own, so the restaurant offered us the option to order from their menu. I had garlic noodles with chicken and also a small side of wings that were delicious. Everything was good, our server kind and efficient.

Incredible Meal

By WmpMarshall |

My wife had doubts about a restaurant where you cook your food, but she loved it. The four of us took the all you can eat option and enjoyed everything we had. This has become my wife's favorite restaurant. She is already making plans for our return and wanting me to find similar places when we travel.

tasty and fun

By Patrick W |

This style of yakimono (grilled food) where the grill is in the center of the table and everyone grills their own food is actually from Korean culture. A somewhat similar Japanese preparation is Shabu-Shabu, where the center of the table is a pot of boiling water to which each diner adds raw foods to be parboiled or boiled (and is a very authentic traditional Japanese cooking preparation), but cultural appropriation aside, the food was good, the ambience authentic and the service excellent. I particularly recommend the duck breast and the "Addicting Cabbage Salad", closely followed by the hangar steak with garlic mushrooms and zucchini. Ons small complaint: I had indicated on the reservation that our guest of honor was recovering from a stroke, but they seated us on the second floor without showing us that they had an elevator (the hostess walked us up the stairs). If one is going to ask about special circumstances and needs, then one should take them into account.

Okay food bad service

By Carol M |

My friends and I, 7 people, came here for dinner tonight, since we like same name restaurant in Honolulu. But, this restaurant is totally different. After we sit down they tell us that they don't except big party for all you eat which is not make sense for me. I don't how identify "big party". So we ordered food which is fine for us. Although the boy bring the water was nice, the waitress was overeater. The food was okay, but for the dollars I can get better food AND service.I wold never come here again.

Great & fun place!

By kathya7 |

My husband and I went here. I found it very interesting and fun. There is a grill in the middle of the table. The waiter was great and helped by telling how long to cook various meats. I thought it was fun cooking prepared food right at your own table! The flavors were great, also! Good Sake as well! Definitely going back!

Fun with food!

By Sonya S |

What a fun venue! My husband and I ate there while visiting Chicago. Close to the Magnificent Mile. Food was great. Really enjoyed grilling our own meats and trying out the sauces they provide. My favorite was the spicy sauce on beef. The rice cooked in a stone bowl with egg cracked over it was the best rice I've ever had with pieces of short ribs and veggies in it. Would definitely highly recommend!

Interactive Dining Experience, Delicious Food

By Rhonda O |

The most unique aspect of the restaurant is having the choice to grill your meal at your own table. There's a small fire pit in each table that you can use to cook the dishes to your liking. Don't worry if you don't normally cook. It's really easy because the meat is marinated/seasoned and the vegetables are chopped/prepared. If the interactive dining option doesn't interest you, the menu also offers dishes that are already cooked. Fried rice and shrimp dumplings are fantastic.

Overall good experience

By Logan&Bianca |

The food was good the staff was friendly and on top of making sure our water was filled. We were seated on the 3rd floor and the seating is a bit different than the main floor. The seats are built-in to the ground and very hard to get in and out of, but other than that it is a great place if you love Japanese bbq. It is a little bit on the pricy side but worth every dime.

Dining with pleasure.

Quite, tasty, not too expensive, and fast serve if you reserve in advance. We called morning on Sunday and were not able to book on the time we needed.

LOVED IT

By Monika I |

This was a fun place to go for lunch and would be even more fun with a big group for dinner! Absolutely delicious and fresh!

Awesome evening

By Kelly Cathcart |

This place was awesome. I am so happy we went with friends that picked otherwise I would never have gone. The all you can eat is the best deal. It offers you the chance to try everything. The portions are small so you can try it all. I thought it was fun to have the grill in the center of the table and cook your own.

Make a reservation!

By mattee_2004 |

Gyu-Kaku is an interesting experience, it has limited tables with a grill in it, so please make a reservation. You can order a la carte, but it is fun to barbeque your own meats at your table, the portion sizes are small enough that you can try multiple different dishes, we were 3 persons and we had a total of 12 plates! For dessert, you can make your own smores at your table!

Good food, good first experience

By miniona l |

It was my first time here and it was a good experience. So many options to choose from and so we tried the Geisha for 2 but it was still a sizable amount of food for 2. This helped us get in quicker though but I would definitely recommend making reservations ahead of time. I loved that they provided mouth wash in the restrooms! It was a very considerate and classy gesture!

Fun and delicious...special dessert....s'mores....perfect for children and adults!!!!

By Sparky399 |

Fun...as you cook your own dinner...or part of it. We went with one of our 11 year old grandsons.Great edamame appetizer that came almost right away. You pick your own food to grill...many choices. Great rice dish that the server mixes at the table. I don't know who had more fun, the 11 year old...the 40 year old...or the grandparents. Be sure to order the s'mores for dessert!!!!Many japanese tourists and business people. Also a lot of young professionals. Understand that if you go at lunch there is a great bargain menu at $15 with 3 courses. We thought the quality & service were very good.

Not the happiest hour

By HoosierWisdom |

The drinks were fine, but the appetizers were a bit underwhelming. The decor could also use a redo and scrub down. All those cook stations create a lot of greasy smoke.

First time

By krystalmrod |

My husband & I did the all you can eat. We thankfully didn’t all day so we were starving. If you plan to eat a lot it’s a great deal, if not just buying smaller servings. Great experience though, will definitely return.

Try the BBQ Andy he Kobe beef

By Ivita23 |

I really liked this place! I visited the one in Chicago but I discovered they have more restaurants all over the US. You must make a reservation before showing up!!!! My boyfriend and I shared a huge cocktail named “the fish bowl” is as huge as delicious!!! Perfect place to try the Kobe beef! The bbq is really good and you will enjoy it! That’s for sure!

Waiting was too long for the BBQ, so i settled for bar food

By Siri S |

I had really hoped for a BBQ experience at this Japanese restaurant, but the wait was too long for me. I settled for a drink and a fried chicken Karaage. The taste was good, but it was on the dry side.

Delicious huge courses

By KatieH |

Reservation is a must!!!! Went early and made Happy Hour, which ends at 6pm including weekends. Didn't have drinks ( not a drinker) but the preset menu for 2 people at $50 we ordered. Loads of courses and everything was delicious. Annie, our waitress was very personable and very efficient. We never felt rushed to get out out the door asap. We had fun grilling our food. Menu was huge with buffet along with a large a la carte rice snd noodle dishes if you do not want loads of BBQ. Our selection consisted of Miso soup per person, edamame to share, a small salad to share, loads of meat to grill. Consisted of beef, chicken and pork along with a bowl of rice per person and a very small platter of veggies to share. Not enough veggies for all the meat but that's a personal side note. After all that, dessert is included. Ours only had the option of smores so we ordered ice cream. All other two person preset menu has a choice on dessert except the happy hour one. I had a great time cooking, huge amount of delicious food, great service and extremely reasonable prices for all that food. Several locations, will go back!

We visited at around 4pm on a Saturday and it was surprisingly busy, so I would guess you should reserve a table for popular times. The food was good and there was plenty of it, the service was also good - our waiter took the time to explain the various options on the very extensive menu. A meal for 2 with a pitcher of beer was less than $100 including tip. We were in the 'happy hour' period (which goes until 5.45pm) so food and drink was a bit cheaper - worth doing.

Food was ok but service mediocre

I went to this place in October last year after the chicago Marathon. The waitress was really mean and very unrespectfull. I went 3 times to this restaurant in Tokio and never had a problem. I ask for the all you can eat menu, when I ordered the meats after one 1 minute I asked the weitress to cancel that order of meats because I thought that It was too much, he didnt want to cancel it saying that it was already made, It took 15 minutes for him to bring the food so I dont believe it was true. He said that we couldnt take some of the food for take out and in the table in front of us , people were taking their food home. The guy was really racist, I will never come back to this Gyu Kaku in Chicago

food was excellent, a little bit pricey, in the heart of Chicago. A lot of choices. Place was clean. Staff was friendly. They explain it well

Nice dinner

By Malwina J |

I enjoyed a very nice dinner with my husband here the other Saturday. We made no reservations and just went to restaurant directly, they had us waiting for around 15 mins when almost whole floor was empty. Not a big deal though. Our waiter was really nice, explained how to grill our own food quickly and efficiently. The rest of the food was served very quickly too. The meat was marinated very nicely, we had 2 portions Harami miso skirt steak and premium eye steak. I especially enjoyed premium eye steak and would recommend it to anyone. Also ordered miso ramen (rather heavy and disappointing), veggie rolls (delicious, light and not greasy at all), steamed chili oil dumplings (ok but nothing exciting about them) and chocolate lava cake (clearly not their specialty). Beer was not cold enough with the bbq. Overall, we had a nice evening and dinner there, but i will be still looking for asian style bbq around Chicago.

Delicious

We ate delicious foods. Prices are reasonable. You should try sake. Its worth to wait for suitable table...

Best Japanese Barbecue

Neither particularly good nor reasonably priced

On Ohio street in downtown Chicago near Michigan avenue, the restaurant attracts a good deal of local shoppers and out of town travelers. This is a Japanese restaurant doing Korean barbecue in a typical table side self cook style. You'll find all of the common Korean barbecue items. Galbi, marinated strips of beef, pork bellies, kimchi, etc. We went as a family and ordered the premier all you can eat buffet that includes a choice of about 35 items. Some choices are better than others, of course. The shrimp shumai was good. The fried dumplings were over cooked. The thin roast cuts of beef were delicious and the NY strip steak were not bad. But they were all over marinated and salty. Plus the portions were very small. Not an issue for all you can, obviously, except the service is slow. You end up waiting for the waiters to show up after finishing the meats to re order additional cuts. This place isn't cheap. You'll pay $45/person if you have couple of beers with the all you can eat. Expected a lot more for the price. They also don't bring the side dishes you would get at a real Korean barbecue place. The wonderful variety of side dishes is normally a real treat at a Korean restaurant. Finally, the rice is very dry and lacked moisture. May be not a big deal for some, but it makes or breaks meals for Asians who grew up eating it every day. Generally, this was a disappointing meal. You would be better off going to a genuine Korean barbecue restaurant. Several good places in Chicago.

Amazing Food!

We ate at Gyu Kaku Chicago last July and it was amazing. They served fresh vegetables on the side and varieties of Meat. Our server was very attentive in our needs.

MUST-EAT Restaurant in Streeterville

By DSHBOLDLY |

For locals and tourists, Guy-Kaku is one restaurant you can’t miss in Streeterville. The ambience, service, and food make for one of the most unique and delicious food experiences you can have in Chicago. You pick the seafood, meat, and veggies to grill at your table. We picked 5-8 options for two people with rice and were delightfully stuffed. It is great for couples or groups of 6-10. We tell all of our friends about this place and look forward to sharing another GK experience with others in the future.

one of a kind dining experience

this place has been designed very innovatively with a grill in the middle of the table and they serve you with marinated food that you can grill by yourself. The staff is very friendly and guides you with the grilling instruction of each food item. It has quite a few options for vegetarians as well. It was fun eating my food with chopsticks for the first time.

Japanese BBQ

This is a great place to chat.. Bear is cheap and nice quality! The quality of meat (beaf) is very high. We cook by themselves, can eat as soon as the meat is ready...

A favorite

Being familiar with yakiniku since initially discovering thirty yearsago, it was great to find one in the U.S. We traveled to Japan only last month (Feb), so this was a great deal.

Flavorful meals

By Torte_Sue |

This is not one of those big Japanese bbq table restaurants. Each table has its own grill for you to cook your own meat. Portions are fairly small so be sure to order some sides. My husband had the beef with slaw, and I did a prepared shrimp garlic noodle bowl. We shared delicious spicy kimchi and steamed chili pork dumplings. Hours have been reduced due to staff shortages we were told, so check if it’s open on its website. We had reservations, and it appeared that all of the people entering also did for dinner. I think the staff shortage showed up in some service slip ups. My husband’s beef abd our kimchi was brought out at least 10 minutes before my meal which was odd. It meant he either would have eaten his food before mine arrived or it sat on the table.

1st Time Japanese BBQ

Came across this restaurant on Trip Advisor and was interested with the cooking style. If you like the Melting Pot and it’s way of cooking your entree, you will enjoy this experience. The restaurant has some of the friendliest people you will ever meet and you can tell immediately it is a local favorite. While waiting for our reservation time we saw so many come in trying to get a table on demand and were turned away due to capacity. Everything they serve is prepared perfectly and they also have Covid precautions in place. They offer appetizers but honestly you won’t need them. Pork fried rice was excellent and even brought some extra back to our room for the rest of our family to try!!

Good food, great service

This restaurant just a few blocks from my hotel right in magnificent mile area. It was a little bit pricy but you get what you pay for. Food was great and service was perfect.

Great service, awesome dining experience

This was my second experience with Japanese BBQ. The good thing about ordering your meat raw was that it came.out very quickly. And the strips were small so they cooked quickly as well. We ordered the pork cheek, spicy pork, the lamb, the ribeye, the kalbi, and the angus cut. All very delicious. The ribeye and pork cheek bring my personal favorite. Our server Glenn was super awesome. We also received a free ice cream for my birthday. Definitely coming back here again!

Can You Stand a 2 and 1/2 Hour Waiting Time?

By Romel S |

On busy nights especially Friday or Saturday, an advanced reservation should cut your waiting time, and without it will take you 2 and 1/2 hours or more before being seated. Food should have been good here despite the smoke from the grills (if you can stand it and don’t mind your clothes having smoke scented; and what happened to exhaust fans at indoor grills - hmmm?). While waiting, you can do other things and hoping to be called or texted that your table is ready. Of course you can always exercise the option to “eat somewhere else”. Finally seated, we were ushered to a table, worn out and charred, something unexpected (see photo). We’ve ordered a set menu, and the food were all okay, except for the salad missing its dressing. We’ve been to a lot of yakiniku places, especially in Japan, and this one is okay for its worth being one of only two in the city. However, it’s starting to show the need for improvement or growth opportunities to meet customer demands. The latter will do with reduced wait time.

Fantastic for Groups

I'm a loyal customer at Gyu-Kaku's around the world. My first experience was in Hawaii and I've been hooked ever since! Order marinaded meats and vegetable plates for the table and cook them on your own grill with the provided tongs! The food is delicious and service is typically very attentive. This is a great draw during the day for late lunch/early dinner due to their happy hour pricing. Come between 11:30-5:45 for their special pricing!

Best dining experience I have ever had

By Joy W |

Not just the best Japanese/Korean BBQ meal I have had; but, quite possibly the best dining out experience I have ever had! The restaurant is so cozy (very traditional Japanese/Korean BBQ style), our server was exceptional, the food was delicious and being able to roast S'Mores at the end was the icing on the cake! We all agreed that our dinner out to Gyi-Kaku was one of our favourite parts of our trip to Chicago

Consistently great

I visit Chicago once or twice a year. This continues to be one of my favorite restaurants. The food is fresh, the place is fun, the service is great, the prices are right, and there's always something new and fun to try.

A Fun Experience, Flavorful Meats, Friendly Service

By globetraipser |

I had dined at other locations of this restaurant in other states and was curious how this one would stack up. My guest and I went for dinner on a weeknight. There is something about cooking your own food at the table that is conducive to conversation and a relaxing experience, which is one of the nicest aspects of this restaurant and restaurants like it. The service was friendly and mostly attentive, although one item from our order was forgotten and had to be asked for. Most of the meats are flavorful although as you might expect the filet is quite bland unless you add one of the sauces to it. When you leave you'll probably realize that you didn't eat a lot but you'll feel full and satisfied, one of the benefits of this style of restaurant. I recommend the brunch for the best value. It's easy to get a gluten-free meal here too.
