Okay so let’s be honest I’m Hawaiian and Portuguese and don’t speak a lick of Chinese (Cantonese, mandarin, etc.),Japanese, Vietnamese, Lao or Hmong if you get offended sorry I’m just saying I don’t speak the language spoken there by the staff. That said if you can speak the language there I’d say your experience there will be far more civil than a non speakers first time visit for very obvious reasons. The service aka water and all that is ehhhh. You’ll have to work for it. But honestly don’t waste your time filling up on water. YOU ARE THERE TO GRIND !!!!!! It is literally this semi savage display of food coming at you from almost every angle in the restaurant on these little trolleys from women smiling at you speaking broken English (some sooooo much better than others) whoever is the representative to speak to these amazing women needs to be on their “A” game no lie ! Go for what you know !!! And always ask what you are getting I almost ate turtle ( although I hear it’s a delicacy I just couldn’t do it haha) The GO to musts: The noodle plate ! (There’s only one I think) Manapua like steamed bun (you’ll know) Pot stickers for sure Egg roll The duck 😍 Sweet taro roll The flash fried greens The sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf Shumai all kinds of meats in them And the tea they bring is bomb Honestly we went with 10 people and the place was packed out the door no lie. Waited about 30 minutes max. They turn people over fast in this place. It’s crazy. Go in and get a ticket for them to call you. DO NOT GO OUTSIDE AND WAIT. She has a little speaker she speaks into in the restaurant and you WILL NOT HEAR IT OUTSIDE. Heck you barely hear it inside of the restaurant. Last this place is awesome haha. If you want something particular. Don’t be afraid to ask the servers. They will make it happen! 😁

There are many Dim Sum joints close to (if not on) 82nd, and this one is reasonable and busy for that reason. It happens to be walking distance from my house, which I like!!

Lately when discussing dim sum some friends suggested that HK Cafe was very good, so my husband and I decided to try it. We arrived around 11:30 am on a weekday and found a huge crowd there waiting for food. This was both good and bad. The bad was obviously the wait and the good was the promise of a tasty brunch. During the wait I observed that people were being seated by the size of the group instead of 1st come 1st served. Eventually we were called. The table they seated us at was only a few inches from the over crowed waiting area. That meant that people waiting were crowding in on us. But, even more importantly it meant that the people pushing the carts didn't even try to come to our table and we got very little food served to our table. Eventually a man came over and cleared the few empty serving plates that we had. I told him about the problem of no carts and he did offer to get us some food but the downside was that we had to tell him exactly what we wanted. This was our first time here, we didn't have any menus and really wanted to see what was on the carts. What we could see from a distance looked interesting but I didn't know what the names of the dishes were. He just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. He didn't seem at all interested in helping us out. Eventually a lady carrying a tray of dishes to replenish one of the carts walked by our table. We got her attention and got a couple of fresh dishes. After that all we wanted to do was leave....which we did. My conclusion is that the food that we did get to try was ok but not that good to want to repeat the experience. I assume that if we were seated further back into the dining room I would be writing a better review today but I'm not prepared to chance it in the future. Portland has other restaurants that serve dim sum and their food is fine. I'll go there in the future.

Like: Terrific Dim Sum. Not only the usual Har Gow and Shu Mai; but everything. Did not have a bad or average dish. Dislike: You need to get there before 11:15 am if you don't want to wait in line.

This place was amazing!!! The food was outstanding. There was a bit of a wait but it was worth it. Highly recommend this place.

We had lunch at about 1 p.m. on a Friday; while busy, there were still multiple tables available. Lots of people talking and eating so noise level was moderate to high, along with Dim Sum ladies patrolling tables and calling out. We got a couple of Dim Sum and also ordered off the menu; everything was fine according to my expert wife. Cost was moderate as most plates off menu (family style) were $10-12 and each had a good amount of food. Will return again to explore more of the menu

It took a bit to find the HK - it's in a corner of a large strip mall. So worth the hunt. This is amazing dim sum, better than anywhere else in Portland. This is our new favorite dim sum after being faithful to our other, older place(s) for 15+ years in Portland. Not one single dish has disappointed. In a bunch of visits we've had pretty much the entire variety and have loved all of it. Our friend who lived in Hong Kong for more than a decade says HK Cafe would be a star in Hong Kong.

I've been here many times and the food has been consistently good. One of my favorite places in Portland for dim sum. It's crazy busy, especially on the weekends and a long wait unless you're lucky. Once you get your name on the waiting list and find a place to sit or stand, they call your number over a loud speaker. The carts and food are plentiful and everything I've had has been hot and very good! Prices are reasonable. Recently I tried getting take out. The nice thing is that there are a couple parking spots right in front for that. What I didn't care for was how it was boxed. They have cartons so your items are somewhat squished in. My egg custard tarts were flipped over one on top of the other which is fine if I'm the only one eating it. I wouldn't order this way if I wanted it to look nice. Still, my favorite items are worth it. It's a little chaotic at the front counter and I had to wait a bit for my food. Staff is a little abrupt and they could smile and be more friendly instead of rushing to do the next thing. Great food but service needs work.

Be prepared for a healthy wait during lunch hours (11-1) PM. There are plenty of delicious cart offerings (bao, noodles, dumplings). The ribs ordered off the menu were too salty to eat, but the freeze-dried greens that the ribs were plated on was amazing!

Great for anytime you want the best dim sum. Hands down the best shu Mai, sticky rice, and baked bao. I've never had to wait for a table. And I've never had better dim sum anywhere.

This review is for lunch/dim sum only. I have been at HK Cafe twice with a friend and absolutely love their dim sum. Two adults can have a sumptuous meal here on a weekday for less than $20, tip included. In fact, I was too full afterwards and had to skip dinner that evening. HK Cafe is very popular with the nearby Asian community and does a steady lunch business, so get there by 11:30am if possible to avoid waiting in line. The large parking lot is shared with other businesses; therefore, finding a spot near the restaurant entrance could be an issue on busy days. Overall, a good place for dim sum in SE Portland.

I came to Portland for a quick weekend trip and happened upon the HK Cafe. I tend to be a bit picky regarding my food, but after viewing the menu, the authentic nature of the environment, and how crowded it stays, I decided to give it a try. The food was very good, authentic, and with very generous portions. The service was good and fast, Thus, i was very pleased with the experience. i will be returning on my next trip!!

All the basics, very fresh, and it’s a huge place which is usually good because there’s lots of dim sum constantly coming on carts. Stands up to what you would expect in the San Francisco Bay area

We recently ate dim sum here with our party of 12. HK had to roll out a bigger table for our group. It was decent food. Heard that all the Asian foodstuffs and restaurants are all out on 82nd and that there is an abandoned Chinatown in downtown Portland.

The restaurant came well-recommended and did not disappoint. Waitstaff brought around trollies of food and left plates on our table for everyone to share. The selection was wide and the food was well-prepared and to the proper temperature. We got there and waited about 20 minutes to get in for Sunday brunch. I can't remember whether we made a reservation (we were the guests) or just showed up. The restaurant is located in a strip-mallish area, so there was plenty of parking, although not a lot to entice you into taking a post-meal stroll in the area. Although I can't recommend a specific selection of the many we had on our table, I know that we were unable to try everything - many choices - and didn't eat any of the end-of-meal desserts. It was a good place for visitors or to take visitors - probably not a good weekly habit, unless you starve yourself all week in anticipation.

I haven't found a really good Dim Sum place anywhere in this city and it seems unlikely that I will anytime soon. The HK seems to be over-run by lots of Chinese folks, which is always a good sign, but they all seem popular. This place served up the run of the mill common DimSum items that tasted of old fryer oil and too much fishy something. The clean fresh taste I've grown accustomed to has eluded this chef. This being said, I guess this place is as good as any around here if you don't mind the long wait for mediocre cuisine. My hong Kong-born friend thinks this place is very popular with the Chinese because you can get some of the more unique items that are usually only found in Hong Kong. She preferrs the Ocean City a few blocks north on 82dn.

There are lots of Asian restaurants in the Jade District of Portland, and several dim sum restaurants in particular. My group picked HK Cafe based on the reviews here on TripAdvisor. We visited about 1pm on a Saturday, and there was a line out the door. Do expect to wait if you go. Two in my party were dim sum fans, which was handy as they knew what to pick off the rolling carts of food spinning around the room. Most of the dishes were good. A couple were really good, like the braised greens and the pork belly. Most were not overly hot, but with a restaurant this size, the temperature of the food is directly related to how far you are from the kitchen. It's loud and crowded, and certainly seemed authentic. If you're in the mood for dim sum, I think it's worth the stop.

Long wait at brunch time but totally worth it. Great dim sum in a typically sparse and busy setting. Come hungry and bring lots of friends-the more the better because you'll be able to sample everything.

It is a relatively new place for dim sum in Portland, it is better than Wong Kings for sure, and the parking relatively is easy to find.

We arrived at the restaurant at 4pm. There was no wait. Service is quick. We ordered Soy Sauce Pan-fry noodle, Congee and some dim sum items. They all taste great and the price is good.

We enjoyed dim sum during their lunch...they come around with various items, but be prepared to wait if you don't load up on first go around..delicious

The dim sum here is very good and is comparable to most places I've been. The price is very reasonable. A party of 4 can eat a variety of dishes for under$25. It' quite crowded at lunchtime, especially on weekends. So the recommendation is to get there before 11:30 on weekends? Dthe dinner menu is very much catered to the Chinese, the taste of these dishes are. Above average but one should ask questions before ordering something you are not familiar with. Service is always good and he wait staff is helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to taste authentic dim sum without having to pay high price.

Made an entire family happy, which isn't always easy to do. For me ample amounts of great hall, large tables, rolling carts with yummy dim sum are part of the experience. Next time we'll know to order the Chinese Broccoli directly earlier, but other than that, we wouldn't change a thing. Outstanding value.

My family and I eat here quite a bit, mostly for the dim sum. The quality/price is pretty comparable to Wong's on Division. This place used to be our back up if Wong's was to crowded, but its been flipped-flopped. Get here early because it fills up fast. Although, there is more variety after noon time. The dinner is pretty average...Wong's still a little better.

We grew up going to china town for dim sum…now that that’s not possible this is our go to dim sum restaurant. We drive 2 hours to get our favorite dim sum. Always consistently good and always busy.

Went here for dinner 1 night and then again for dim sum another day. The dinner was meh and prices were okay. Dim sum I thought was really good. At least the dim sum dishes were tastier than the regular menu for dinner. However with the dim sum it always seem to be too unorganized. You would have ladies in carts come by and then another worker holding trays to mix up the items on the carts etc. Next thing I knew, what I wanted wasn't in front of me anymore because with the mix up the lady went in another direction. But by all means that is minor as long as you can fend for yourself and go after the lady with the cart of the items that you want. They are slow to bring out food and takes what seems forever to get anything new out of the kitchen. Service could be better. We had to remind them 3 times we wanted another beer. Parking is inside a strip mall and so far on both occasions it was a little difficult to find parking within very close range to the restaurant.

Amazing place. The line out the door said so first! We showed up at 11:15 am on a Sunday and waited 1.5 hours to be seated. It was worth the wait, but next time we will plan to be there earlier. The crowd that ventures to this restaurant is quite diverse. The waiting, seating, eating, paying process was something akin to poetic chaos. This place is the real deal with carts and a large selection of dishes. Everything we had was fresh from the kitchen and portions were larger than what we're used to. The only thing that seemed off about this place was the creepy balloon guy that catered to kids and balloon fanatics. This place is worth a try. Oh, and by the way, our check was ridiculously low for what we ordered. This was a good deal.

The HK Cafe is a relatively new Hong Kong Style Chinese Place at 82nd and Holgate. After driving by and seeing the crowd of Chinese people at the place, we decided to stop and try the dim sum on a Saturday around lunch time. After a 15-20 minute wait we were seated and sampled many of the various dishes. My wife is Chinese and we prefer authentic Chinese to Americanized Cantonese places. The dim sum does not disappoint. We also returned a week or so later for dinner. The cold jellyfish was a good starter. I would not recommend the "spicy chicken feet". They are steamed or boiled with hot sauce added later. The cold wet chicken skin is not very exciting. However, the regular (fried/steamed) chicken feet are really good. Even my kids ate quite a few. The cooked oysters on the half shell were extremely large and a little metallic for the average palette. The salt and pepper squid were good, but very oily. Overall, the place is good and relatively authentic. The portions are large and prices reasonable. Also with larger groups, if you spend enough money you can get a special price on fresh crab or other selected entree.

Tasty and decent prices. We ordered steamed fish, roast duck, and eggplant. Free lotus tuber soup and tapioca dessert.

First of all I like the place a lot. I think the decor has changed little from the World Buffet that previously occupied this space. So if you can get over the well worn decor, you will in for a very authentic Asian dining experience. We went at lunch time which is for the most part Dim Sum although you can order off the regular full menu as well. I thought it was very busy but I was informed that hour wait times at dinner are not that unusual. There was a large crowd of of mostly Asian folks dining at lunch which really added to my positive experience. Really good food and service. This is one place where I would willing wait an hour to eat. Parking is crowded but only because it is so busy. Fun times for sure. The bigger your group the better. We hit this pretty hard with 7 people and skated out for $85 plus a tip. Look at the back of your menu for help in determining what to order when the Dim Sum carts roll by. Have fun!

I've been a regular for a few years, I use to go to KIng's Cafe for the best dim sum in town. But they let things go and now it's just a bit spendy for less justification. So I switched to HK which was inexpensive and quite good. The last couple of times though and they seem to be going King's way, The prices are inching up and the taste and quality is going down. I can imagine people getting tired hand making those delectable's day after day, but hey! crack that whip and stay on top of things.

I ate here three times. If I stayed in Portland longer, I would go back to this restaurant more. I still plan to go back to this restaurant the next time I visit Portland. Inexpensive Chinese food but restaurant setting feel like a fine dining. Good value. Great taste. You get to see the most of the dishes before buying it. Most dishes have a same flat price. There are special orders such as fish egg you have to order and wait 15 minutes.

This is the second time I've been to hk cafe and both times I had the worst service. My Family sat there for over 20 minutes, only one cart came by for dim sum, they never brought us water or tea I tried to flag someone down and they completely ignored us. Seem to go to every table around us but completely overlook us.

A few of us came here for dim sum on the weekend. Expect to wait during prime time during lunch. The place is big even though they have a decent sized waiting area. Most of us found the food to be disappointing. I was more so as I didn’t feel too good after having the steamed bean curd dish that seemed a bit off in taste. I have been spoiled having top notch dim sum from Vancouver Canada that this place didn’t even make the cut to be rated average. Avoid the deep fried sesame seed ball and the other deep fried oval shaped dumpling. It was too hard to bite through. I was scared I was going to break my teeth. They would load the carts up with trays of the same food which were probably pre-made. I doubt I’ll be back. They’re located in a shopping plaza near Dollar store.

First of all, the service here is pretty awful. The hostess that sat us was super friendly and courteous, which falsely set our expectations. After that it was like pulling teeth to get any kind of service. They brought us plates, silverware, and teacups but no tea or water. We had to ask two different servers for water, when the water came they were a glass short. We then asked for a straw three times as well as the fifth glass of water, had to flag someone down for forks (we had two little ones with us), had our waters refilled only once, and a cart of congee completely ignored us...I wanted congee!!! This restaurant is also incredibly busy. We came at noon on a Saturday and waited for half an hour to get seated. I hear that it's even more crowded on Sundays, I can't imagine considering how packed it was already. Despite all of these negatives, I still want to give it four stars? Yes, because the saving grace is the food. There were some misses (egg rolls, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, and the fried tofu skin roll) but there were plenty of hits! Our favorite dishes: - Any kind of fried shrimp dish you can get your hands on - Egg custard buns - Egg custard tarts - Fried taro balls with pork - Green beans - Shrimp cakes on a green bell pepper (I've never had this before, delicious!) - Shrimp rice noodle rolls There were so many other tantalizing looking dishes but we only had so much room in our stomachs. We definitely recommend coming to this restaurant on an empty stomach, perhaps fasting the day before.

I spent the morning trying to find where would be good to go eat dim sum. Quickly realised I’d have to roll the dice and pick the best of what appears to be a bad bunch. Considering I was staying down town, getting across to here was a mission. We waited for 40 minutes to be seated, which in fairness to downtown Portland, isn’t that bad. But it is bad when you wait that long for what should have been the highlight of my Sunday afternoon. The food just wasn’t satisfying. I actually lost my appetite whilst eating. Overall bland. The chicken feet were really soggy and bland. Char Sui bao didn’t have much char Sui in. Noodles were oily. As for service, well the staff pushing the carts were ok, just put food on our table before we even got a plate, chopsticks or tea so wasn’t like we could eat it until they brought our utensils 5 mins later. Not one to comment so much on decor, as that is usually second to the food, but the toilets were a mess. One urinal looked like someone had thrown up in it, and the floor was slippy so was actually a hazard too. Wouldn’t return.

We love this place! Everything is always fresh and huge portions to take home. Possibly the best Chinese food I've ever had. Try it!

The food was so good! The portions are large. We recommend sharing a couple different dishes. We got the Chicken Hot Pot Taiwanese Style, wonton soup and Salted Scallops. Way too much for two people, but are taking tons home.

First time here. Our Chinese-American friends who find the good places brought us here because we asked for a good Dim Sum meal. This place did not disappoint us in most ways. I didn't count but was told that there were five carts in operation. That represents tremendous variety and constant opportunities to try something more. In addition we received visits from people carrying trays of other things. We tried the common choices you see everywhere but there were many other offerings. Other than chicken feet, I could not identify a missing dish. In addition to usual choices there were vegetables and different kinds of meat on small plates. Our friends like the beef and tomato chow mein. I agree it is good but it added substantially to the quantity of food. I want to go back. The price was right! Including tip and with lots of leftovers it was a little more than $20 per couple. It was very busy. Service was not good except in the continuing offers to sell us more food. After the lunch rush, service improved. We were glad we went.

Be prepared for a weight - we got there earlyish and still had to wait a good 30 mins - it was Sunday as well. Atmosphere and food was great. Lots of carts and choices. Service is quick and efficient and not seemingly to push you out. Prices were good.

Of course we rode our bikes here from North Portland. Our niece said that this dining experience would rock our culinary world! She was correct. As you sit down there is a flurry of activity at your table with the servers bringing all sorts of types of dim sum. I didn't really know exactly what I was ordering but the waitress seemed to know what I would want. Trust her instincts and enjoy yourself

Visited with Chinese friends on their recommendation. Great food, all selected by friends. We had no idea what the items were. Nothing exotic ordered. Arrived slightly after 10am, seated promptly. Line started forming around 10:30. Friends said line is typical after 10:30. We sat about 2 tables back from kitchen and always had a food cart coming by with hot food. They will cut the portions into pieces if you need. We asked for forks which were promptly brought. Cost about $70 for 6 of us.Tea was very good. Restaurant can be seen from Holgate but not 82nd which is the address. It is in the SW corner of a shopping center. No web site that I could find but someone has posted a menu if you want to try dinner. Enjoy!

Qt ride the HK Cafe at a friends urging , we had a very good lunch! The place is very very busy so come early or be prepared to wait. Do I live Dim Sum , so so , but if your friend is buying , it's good!

Best dim sum I've found in Portland to date. Authentic Hong Kong Style carts with different dim sum plates. Best to get their early to avoid the long wait time to get a table. Food is pretty reasonable and fresh.

We purposely avoided lunch time, entered restaurant after 1 pm. We only saw two carts went by. And selection was slim. Last time I was there, waited half hour during lunch hour, but selection was better. Flat noodle with beef was very good. I really didn't care for beef short rib. Cooked too long perhaps?

Great food and a unique dining experience. Lots of food carts moving around and putting whatever you wanted on your table. I stopped short of the chicken feet, but tried lots of other good stuff, even if I didn't know what it was. Everything tasted great.

Was not able to find anything in Portland Chinatown/Old Town that has dim sum. Yelp showed this place outside of city. It was a Sat so place was packed. You walk in to get a number at the counter. We waited 25 mins. Difference here compare to SF BayArea is you do not have a choice of tea. You sit down and later a waitress pops down a pot of tea and your utensils. I said we did not order tea yet and the reply was “Its Jasmine, do you want it”! I was like huh? My husband said it’s fine so she left. It’s really old style of dim sum house with foods on carts and steamers, which was nice. It also meant foods would have been sitting out awhile that you are not sure. We were so hungry, which was a mistake because we picked out 6 dishes right away. There portions are sooo big compare to SF. One piece of Sui Mai pork dumpling and I was almost full. There are lots of choices. It’s good for families but being on vacation with only 3 people, we were not able to sample many dishes, even if we wanted.

I was wary of having dim sum in Portland, since I've been to some of the best places for it and feel if anything, I have a rather defined palate for it now. The tea was good! Nice taste and piping hot. There wasn't as many items on the various carts but what came out was pretty tasty. Authentic in my mind. I didn't enjoy the fried items as much. Could taste pork in my sweet sesame balls which could mean one of two things: 1) fried in lard or 2) previous item in the fryer was pork. Other than that, I was happy.

I love dim sum. I used to enjoy it in Chicago's Chinatown in the 70's and San Francisco's Chinatown in the 80-90's. Now I am back in an area that to my delight has exceptional dim sum. My two most favored dishes at HK are the Shanghai dumpling; delicate wheat noodle encasing seasoned pork enhanced with a molten surprise of delicious broth inside and the Har Kow which is some of the best I've ever enjoyed; delicately prepared shrimp in a rice-based wrapper. The variety of dim sum is so large it is hard to describe in a review. I tried a new dumpling today but sadly did not catch the name of it. It has a rice based wrapper with greens and shrimp inside. I think it was onion greens. At HK Servings are large, packed with delicious fillings and the price is hard to beat. I give four stars as the restaurant ambiance is not that great. It is looking a bit worn and ican be quite noisy as the room is large with no sound dampening room dividers or fabrics.

My husband and I love Dim Sum and are willing to travel to Portland (50 miles) for the real deal. So far we have tried Wongs, Ocean City and this place and we prefer HK Cafe. Ocean City comes in at a close 2nd but the wait tends to be much longer over there. The atmosphere is great with carts full of tasty dim sum plates getting pushed around the tables. We tend to love the more exotic/authentic plates such as braised chicken feet, tripe, pork stomach etc. Ocean City also has these authentic selections so it's really a toss up but again, you get seated quicker here and some plates might actually win the taste test here.

Wonderful food. We throughly enjoyed every dish we ordered. The broth in the wonton soup was some of the best we have had and the General tsaos chicken was full of flavor and freshly cooked. Highly recommend!

This place is first class. I lived for 20 years in the SF Bay Area and traveled to HK and PRC with a Chinese couple. The wife's family had restaurants and bakeries in HK so I got to eat some great Chinese food in HK and PRC. And I have been in good dim sum joints. HK Cafe is a great dim-sum joint. The dishes are done right and always fresh and tasty. The selection is wonderful, the service is great, the overall vibe is 100% wonderful. Do not miss this place, go and eat there.

My wife and I love good Dim Sum and will put up with a lot of problems with the restaurant if the food is good. This is exactly the issues here. We heard about this place largely by the reviews here and went on a Friday afternoon. My initial impression of the place was where was the Board of Health. The carpeting was filthy and the chair coverings were just as bad. We were then surprised that the quality of the food on the carts were better than anything we have experienced in our new home of Chicago, IL. The variety of shrimp dumplings were amazing and the Bao was likewise outstanding. I would not say the food was as good as the best places in New York or Los Angeles for Dim Sum, but I will be back here on our next trip. If you do go, do not expect great service, you are going for the food.

Have been coming by here over the past few years. The prices have gone up but the choices are varied and quite sound. Very crowded on the weekends, especially the noontime hours. Service is better than average.

This is one of the largest dim sum rooms in Portland. It has the feel of a banquet. Like most Dim sum places, the decor is festive and pleasantly worn. It feels like a foreign catered wedding. The carts move constantly during the peak hours. Shrimp dumplings are excellent. Not on the cart, ordered separately are fresh cooked pea sprouts and other specialties. The chicken feet have a unique texture that some truly relish. The dessert cart has unique buns and sweets that are worth trying at least once. You can order a specific kind of tea if you are persistent and repeat yourself enough times. I always return here and guide folks to this spot. It is most crowded on weekend mornings. Try going on a weekday morning if you can.

Dimsum is really happening at this place. It’s authentic, from food to the kind of Chinese staff attitudes. May not measure up to some in other big cities, but definitely one of the dimsum places in Portland. Go early to beat the crowd but less carts... go a little later for more carts but may need to wait in line to get a table.

This place has very authentic dim sum, so don't be surprised by the crowded people there. Not ideal if you are in rush, since it is likely to have to wait to be seated. There was nothing I didn't like! Literally. It's better to go in group, so you can try a bite of everything. The only reason that I rated average for service is because the way you are served with food it is similar to that in a buffet. The service is friendly indeed.

We had 12 people for dinner today, and one came later, each of us ordered one dish from their special menu, we had a feast! all dinner came with free soup, and sweets after. Every special dish is under $9.00. Weekend is very busy, had to wait most of the time. I Love the dim-sum lunches, the carts comes around often and fresh, many types of food to chose from. I been there at least 3 times last month, always happily fed.

From Dim Sum to Dinner, Hk Cafe always has the excellent service and great food to satisfy my appetite! Many food varieties to choose from including a variety of wines as well. Whenever I leave from a meal, it is always satisfying!

My daughter and I have been hankering for high quality dim sum, and drove from downtown Portland to the eastside to find it. We were well-rewarded. Much like the high quality dim sum establishments in LA, there are many seats, a loud and vibrant beehive of activity and many diners, and cart ladies bringing different categories of dim sum to your table. We enjoyed the baked, meat-filled buns the most, with the rice flour encased shrimp dishes a close second. Our visit was during a Saturday lunch hour, so the restaurant was particularly full with a short wait required to obtain a seat. That level of patronage required the staff to hustle, and meant that the noise level from the many conversations all around us was high. Call it the downside of success. To its credit, the staff did not hurry us at all, and served us fairly soon after we were seated--returning often to offer us whatever we desired. As long as you come prepared with the right expectations, you will be nothing but pleased by your experience.

I'd been to HK Cafe for Sunday dim sum (terrific!) and recently went there for dinner on a weekday. At 6 PM, there was no problem getting a table; but at 7:45 the restaurant was nearly full. The clientele was overwhelmingly Chinese (a good sign), and there were numerous tables of eight, ten, or more, all with wonderful-looking food. Our group of four ordered some dim sum for appetizers and four dishes plus rice. First-rate food in all cases. The service was excellent, notwithstanding a big crowd in the large room.

I am a Westerner who happens to love Dim Sum and also have lived in Hong Kong for four years (moved last year so have been craving it for the past 12 months). We arrived at 10:15 to try to beat the crowds but the place was packed and waited for 50 minutes for a table. IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT! The carts started arriving right away - with practically all the usual favorites. The only dish that didn't compare to the real deal was the salt and pepper squid.

We love dim sum to the point we often enjoy dim sum in Vancouver BC and on lesser extent San Francisco. HK Cafe and Ocean City are by far the better dim sum locations in the metro area. We love HK the most due to their overall freshness, quality level on the items they serve. They do offer dim sum daily and their selection on weekends is big enough we simply can't order all our favorites even with a table of 12. If you like spicy, ask for chili sauce when you are seated. The desserts are great too.

Having Dim Sum in China, London and other Chinese communities in the US, trying this one was an experience. Giving a rating of three is a stretch. I would not recommend this restaurant unless you like bland. Maybe trying something other than the dim sum would yield better results.

Has displaced Wong Kings as our favorite for dim sum. Apparently becomes crowded after about 11am. Corner of 82nd and Hobart.

I came in expecting an above average experience, and I left disappointed. I ordered cashew chicken which was plentiful despite what must be a national shortage of cashews. The chicken pieces usually had A tendon in the middle making it unpleasant at best and, in my opinion, inedible. Lots of celery and lots of sauce but I was not impressed. I also found it interesting that they charged two dollars for a ball of sticky rice. Good rice, and good hot tea. Very nice servers and quite a few Chinese diners make me think this place might be fairly authentic… But I’m not an expert.

We love going here for Dim Sum at lunch, although the people pushing the carts around for you to choose items may not speak enough English to tell you what is inside the dumplings. For us, this makes it more of an adventure. We also go for dinner regularly. The menu is enormous - there are so many entrees to try. The restaurant is large and always busy, yet the service is good. Prices of most items are very reasonable.

Get there early! It's a very very popular place. Be prepared for a wait but the food is good and comes out fast. Reasonable prices especially if all splitting for a large group. We typically go on a Saturday morning -- which seems weird to have dim sum for breakfast but it works !!

We went for Dim Sum and arrived at an awkward time of 4:30- not quite lunch and not quite dinner. The service was still very good and the food was delicious! It did take a bit bit of time to get our food but was WORTH THE WAIT! By the time we left the place was packed!!!

Went to HK for Dim Sum. All kinds of choices.... from veggies to pastry foods to all kinds of dumplings. Meat dishes included everything from chicken feet to pork belly. Just make sure the item is hot before you select it. After traveling in the cart for several turns in the large room food items meant to be served hot can get cold.

The steamed bean curd rolls, shrimp dumplings, and Beef Short Ribs were very good. I'm a Singaporean and never heard of Singapore Fried Vermicelli. Waiter suggested, so we tried. Nothing much. Food came quickly, and we had free red bean soup for dessert.

Great place for authentic dim sum. The place is always full with expert dim sum diners. The is old school dim sum dining with many carts circulating throughout the restaurant filled with a huge selection of tasty morsels. The prices are good too!

We had a good time going there because it seems pretty authentic & it's always fun to pick your food from the carts circulating. They're crazy fast too! Food was on the table before we even got tea in our cups. First bite- food is cold... Second dish, second bite, cold.... Everything was luke warm to room temp. A little nervous about pork & shrimp at that temp from a food safety perspective. Hmmm Everything tastes good though... Just so wish it wasn't cold. Servers were fast & friendly. The place is totally filthy but eh... It's a Chinese dim sum place.

We regularly dined here with family and friends until everything shut down in mid-March 2020. A family member picked up take out from HK and brought it to our house, so I tried it. The online dim sum and regular menu were easy to click pick up, choose a pick up time,, enter the quantity, include tip, and whether paying on pick up. The box of our selections was ready when I arrived to pick it up, and the hostess added in a generous amount of hot sauce and chopsticks. Everything was as expected; tasty and hot. Very satisfied.

The restaurant is located in a shopping mall. Plenty of parking spots. We went there quite late but still very busy. The waiter was very funny and friendly. He introduced some dishes, also reminded us of the portion size. We still ordered more than we needed to warm up for breakfast because the price was the best among the restaurants we had been to during the trip. The taste was authentic too. We were extremely happy about finding this restaurant and surprised that Portland has such an outstanding Chinese restaurant. The restaurant itself was spacious. Definitely will visit again .

By far, the best Dim Sum eatery I've been to anywhere. And I've eaten at MANY establishments through out my travel all across the western states.

The six of us came here for dim sum yesterday (Sunday) after bringing just our two grandchildren the Sunday before that made an interesting comparison. Last week we got to HK Cafe at 12:30 p.m., were told there would be a twenty minute wait, so we strolled down to the Dollar Store and let the kids pick out a treat to kill a little time. We returned to wait inside at the front of the restaurant in an open-ish area that had maybe ten chairs that differs from our favorite dim sum place where automatic doors open and let in blasts of cold air onto those waiting in rows of chairs. Yesterday we arrived at 9:30 a.m. when they opened, so we were immediately seated. The big difference between 9:30 a.m. and noon is that at 9:30 a.m., relatively few dishes were offered for the first half hour. By 10:30 a.m., there was a selection comparable to other dim sum restaurants. Unfortunately, the two dishes we especially wanted, fish balls with fish eggs and soy sauce chicken--perhaps the best in Portland-- never appeared, and we gave up and left at 10:40 a.m. The line was fairly short by then, so maybe that is a good compromise. I guess you have a choice of waiting a half hour when they are really busy and have everything they make available or go early and wait a half hour seated at a table as they gear up to top speed. The difference is what we spent was about $10 per person when there was not that much to choose from to about $15 per person when there were lots of choices and the urge to try new dishes kicked in. A major plus is ample parking. One minor good thing was that the take home containers and plastic bags are at the front counter so you can help yourself. A minor inconvenient thing was that the tables do not have a turntable that makes it somewhat difficult to access the dishes, the sauces, and the teapot. A man sells balloon toys that was a fun thing for our two little kids; $3 each or 2 for $5. Makes for a festive atmosphere.

the food is like eating store brought food and was cold & hot and fresh i will not give them business and i take my business over to sub way or taco bell at taco bell you can a drink during happy hour for a buck i will give them business any day

Admittedly, I've never had Dim Sum. But my husband has been raving about it for years. Finally, we found the perfect place in Portland - and eating food was fun and exciting here! Everything from the shrimp rolls to the coconut buns was hot, delicious and FAST! They bring the food right to your table and you choose loudly and quickly from the carts. Yes we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table and it never slowed down. But it was worth it and I can't wait to go back!

Unless you do not want the most amazing Asian food in Portland. If you have to wait in line just get over it, it’s worth the wait. We always have dim sum for Thanksgiving dinner - why eat turkey in a overpriced restaurant when you can get the most amazing food here?

Oh my gosh! So this is where all those wonderful cooks from Seattle went to. This is the dim sum place. Your search is over. My favorite is duck, rice cakes, egg tart, green beans, shumai, sesame balls, etc. oh my, did we every overeat. Great service with a smile. The carts will come to you. If there is something that you are looking for and don't see it as the carts go by, ask. They will bring it to you.

I had never been here before, so a friend met me there for lunch. The place was packed and is obviously a local favorite. Even though they were very busy, we got seated fairly quickly. The restaurant is like an Asian version of a Brazilian steak house, as servers bring by trays of various dishes for you to try. I didn't know what a lot of the food was, but it was all tasty. The pork buns were very good as was the squid. I tried several dishes as they were brought by my table and everything was very good. Chop sticks are on the table, but if you ask you can get a fork. It's a definite food adventure, and I loved it.

Another Chinese friend raved about this newly opened place. We visited on a Friday night for dinner and dim sum. Authentic Chinese place with really good Won Ton soup, Shaomai , noodles, Chashao (BBQ Pork). We ordered a combo plate which two adults could not finish along with a Won Ton soup. Could not finish the Ended up taking two take home boxes back to hotel. Total bill along with a generous tip- under $20. Wow! This is our new go-to Chinese restaurant when visiting Portland. Do not miss this one!

Can I just say get here early you'll. We got here at 10:00 and still waited 45 mins. It was worth the wait too. The portions are HUGE and fantastic. You will love the experience here if you've never been.

Came here on a Saturday. Lady in front tells me be here around 10:30 to 11:00 as the first round of patrons will finish their feast and the second rounds starts. Sat down after 15 minute wait and got in a table by the window. Food cart started before the tea pot arrived. Food tastes average. Hargow, suimai, chicken feet, the works. Finished an hour later and our hunger satisfied. Will come for dinner another time.

This place seems to be the best dim sum currently in the Portland area. The service was good. The individual pieces were large which is what you get outside of SF or Asia. The only bad dish we had was the sesame balls. Don't expect world class dim sum here with a huge variety of dishes. However this is a good place for the PDX area. Also come early if planning on a Sunday visit.

Dimsum is cheap here during week days, only $2.5 per plate. Dinner is alright, but needs improvement because the chefs are confused what Cantonese style food taste like

My son asked us to meet him for our first taste of Dim Sum. I can only compare it to the Chinese food we have experienced. It was absolutely delightful. We had mostly steamed small plates that were presented in small metal steamers or placed decoratively on white plates. We could not eat all that we wanted to try and we were there early so did not get the garlic green beans. We saw them coming out as we left and my son explained that they were without a doubt, the best he has ever had. We stayed away from fried breads, but did have a cream puff like sugared donut. The pork belly was wonderful. All plates were large enough to share and for $25 for three of us, it was filling. The tea was also very nice and was refilled often. Service was courteous and helpful. Use the chopsticks and say yes to a variety and you will enjoy yourself.

I love dim sum,but I get tired of bad dim sum - and there seems to be a lot of so-so dim sum out there. But not at HK! They make it right! Frankly, it's as good as the really good places in Hong Kong. It's a large place, not fancy, but it was packed on a week day at 10:30am! 99.99% of the customers were ethnic, if that tells you something. If you like dim sum, you should try it.

Updated chairs, lots nicer service today, food seems to have improved a bit. Our favorite dim sum lunch place.

Big restaurant for large groups and families! Yummy dim sum available at all times. Try their belly pork with taro or shanghai dumplings! It is a busy place so go early or wait in line.

We had our first Dim Sum experience at HK and we loved it! We told the server it was our first time and she took very good care of us. Her recommendations were very good without going too crazy on the price. 8 of us ate for $74! The delicious variety of food and fast pace were a lot of fun. We are looking forward to coming back and bringing friends and try even more new dishes. We arrived at 10am on a Thursday morning and were seated immediately, but the place was filling up fast. By 10:30 there was a growing line of people waiting to get in. I can see why now!

Often busy but worth it . Providing ample food for two, and great hot and sour soup. Manager often on the floor making certain of a great guest experience .

Authentic Cantonese dim sum & atmosphere. A great place to experience good Chinese food. The Hakaw is specially tasty.

Expect to wait to be seated most times of the day , but they turn over tables quickly. No matter , it is worth the wait! No atmosphere , just lots of tables full of happy diners with lots of food in front of them. Great selection of dim sum constantly cruising by , and they are so inexpensive you should try as many as you can!

We were there waiting an hour and 45 min. And the waitress who served is terrible, rude, should be fired!

Been looking for a new dim sum restaurant. Found it. Good quality, tons of variety. Very clean space, busy, good. Fun.

from the Chinese men smoking right by the front door. When we entered the venue we were delighted to see that most of the patrons were Chinese tucking into their dim sum. Soon we did the same and is it ever authentic? Almost as good as the Hong Kong counterparts but the view outside cannot compare to Hong Kong. Very very tasty dim sum offered by servers pushing carts. very very tasty.

This placed is always packed. Food is very good. Friendly service at a great price. I highly recommend lunch/dinner here.

We had a little trouble finding this restaurant, it’s around back in a strip mall. The restaurant wasn’t the cleanest I’ve ever been in, but that’s pretty typical of Chinese restaurants. The carpet was dirty and the chair covers badly needed cleaning. The Dim Sum was pretty good, some better than others. The shrimp dishes were excellent, but the shrimp mai were pretty bland.

Linda invited us to try the dim sum here. It was packed but the dim sum is ok comparing sine good dim sum places in Bay Area. The price is reasonable and very crowded during weekend

I worked for months planning our drive across the US. My wife taught in Japan and traveled through China, She ate Dim Sum frequently in Asia. Because Dim Sum is impossible to purchase in our area, she was craving a meal. I have only had this meal twice, once in Amsterdam and the other in San Francisco. My wife was quite pleased with the experience, but she only took a one bite of the chicken's foot. I ate two.

What would your opinion be when the first thing they serve you, coffe, he grabed by the lip of the cup, not the handle but he put his fingers inside the cup !!!!!!! The replacement came with coffe spilled on the outside of the cup and a mismached saucer....The third came fine but the clock had already started ticking negatively. They only take cash so for two people you have to figure $100 easy and they serve the same things as other less expencive and would take credit card places.

We love Chinese food, but my wife is unable to eat most dim sun ingredients. We tried HK Cafe, even though it is known for its dim sun, to see how its other menu items held up against our other favorite Portland Chinese restaurants. The results were mixed. HK's hot&sour soup was excellent, reasonably priced, but just a bit hotter for my wife's taste. Perhaps it can be specially ordered less-hot? Chicken fried rice was a bit bland, with rather dry chicken pieces. Sesame chicken was OK, though the chicken pieces were small compared to the quantity of breading. Szechuan fish was the best thing we ordered, with fresh tasting pieces of mild fish in an excellent sauce. Prices are reasonable for the portion sizes, and service was cordial.

Isn't your typical dim sum restaurant with a standard fare. The couple of times I went there was extremely crowded and the food had kind of an off flavor. A little gamey I think. But that must be their Style. I much prefer Ocean City up the street although it's not as good as ones in Seattle and certainly not as good as ones in Hong Kong

This is our new favorite dim sum spot. Excellent food, friendly servers, and reasonable prices. The room is huge and the ambient noise level is proportional to its size and volume of chatting diners so if you have a hearing issue, do come "off hours" to make your experience better.

It is great to be in the big dining room and see all of the three generation families eating there but I could really use help with the menu. The menus are large and not as descriptive as I need. Asking the help is a daunting language challenge. That being said the food is authentic, tasty, and the servings are large. It is fun to be able to order anything from chicken feet to fried intestines. The neighborhood has become Portland's Asian center. Lots of pho noodle shops in the neighborhood . Holgate and 82nd has long been in the top 10 corners for car accidents so beware.

We arrived at 10:30AM, not too late, but the large Café was already almost full. Dim Sum quickly came to our table. It was pretty much, guess and taste?? We like almost everything, 2 choices, not to our liking, but is Dim Sum.....you have to try to know!! Service was very good, language barrier was definitely an issue, but part of the experience. Almost 97% Asian, just a few of us white people. Prices were very reasonable, $10 per person, and we had plenty to eat....When we left, just before noon, there was a long line. Will return!!!

The Mongolian Beef with fried rice was delicious. The beef was tender and juicy, and I love that they added fried egg to their fried rice.

I've heard about this place for years and we finally came here for early Dim Sum. The sui mai were particularly good. The calimari (they actually called it that) were overcooked and dry but everything else ranged from pretty good to very nice. Service was a bit rushed with several carts descending on you when you first sat down vs. coming by from time to time. A huge room full of happy Asian customers. Not the very best dim sum I've ever had (that was years ago in London, England) but quite good and great variety.

Be prepared when you go during peak hours. There will be a wait, sometimes up 45 min, but worth it. If you catch it off-peak hours, if the carts will be sparse and the dim sum will be cold. The bao selection seemed to be limited, but some of the staff are highly-entertaining.

Of course they have all the old standard dim sum, but also new or less often seen offerings such as soup dumplings, fish roe, and a creamy sweet egg. Dim sum is fresh and hot, nicely seasoned and very good value. Service was swift. Ask for water right away if you want water, as it may be hard to attract someone's attention during service. Also, go early. The restaurant fills up quickly.

From reading previous reviews I see that the dim sum sounds very good. I ate a combination dinner here on 12-28-13, and it was bad. It was extremely greasy, too salty, and lacking in subtlety. Altho I took the leftovers home, I threw them in the garbage and could not consider eating them again. From my experience, I'm guessing that lunch is the time to go here, not dinner.

We mistakenly ordered 1 dish per person plus soup. Huge portions. One dish is enough for 2 adult appetites. But since prices are reasonable and leftovers to take to work are great, go ahead and order 1 per person. You will have a hard time deciding what to order and sampling a little of this and that is what I enjoy. The French style beef was amazing.

one of the best dim sum spots in the city, boasting huge room, carts flying, foods to be tryin. You cannot go wrong here. try as many things as possible, and then finish with egg tarts.

I love the dimsum offerings here , however ,waiting for an hour wasn't worth it though. We were here to celebrate my parents 53rd wedding anniversary on New Year's day. Total chaos at the waiting area. And when we were seated, only one cart was roaming with not much to offer, everything we wanted was no longer available and its not even 2pm . It was a Sunday and holiday! I always have to wave to get help. We will try this place again but next time it would be on a regular day not weekend nor holiday. Food is good and reasonably priced. However, most of the dimsum we want to try were all gone by the time we were seated. Management needs to get busy working on their problems of customer service.

went with friends who had researched Dim Sum places in town, been toa few, but HK Cafe was wonderful and We WILL return. It was great. Lots of choices going around on the carts, very fresh and tasty, superb service, and lots to try. SUPER great value, as well!!!!

This was one of the best Brunches I have had in many cities. One of the best things about it:) for a small fee it's all you can drink Bloody Mary's and Mimosas plus many others. They have outdoor seating which allows for great people watching!!!

I was somewhat excited to see a new restaurant move into the previous World Buffet building at the corner of SE 82nd and SE Holgate. Indeed it is a red-letter day for this area of town to get a restaurant built in a building erected after the Nixon administration. So it was nice to see them take over a relatively newer but vacant building. First, the place is huge. It looks like they will convert the entire space into a banquet hall on a moment’s notice. Otherwise, all the furnishings are new and it looks good inside. Are flat-panel LCD TV’s authentic decor from Hong Kong? The menus take a bit of study - they gave me three menus to select from each time I visited. There are many standards, including fried rices and chow meins that any one will be familiar with . My last order was BBQ Pork Fried Rice and Chicken with Vegetables. Both entrees came to a total of less than $18. When my order was ready I picked up this heavy bag of food - upon getting it home, I found out the portions (at least on take-out) are HUGE! There had to have been at least 8 cups of BBQ Pork Fried Rice in my order, and about 4-5 cups of Chicken with Vegetables. So there I was, at home, with enough food to feed myself plus every one of the extended Palin family for only $18+tip. But therein also lies the rub - I had a huge amount of mediocre Chinese food on my hands. The fried rice was, well...mainly rice. The little BBQ pork in it was diced incredibly small, as were the few vegetables in it. It was pretty much just oily rice wtih a few ingredients tossed in. The Chicken and Vegetables did not skimp on the chicken at all - it was the vegetables that had appeared to be AWOL. The sauce was mainly just soy sauce. Again - while the portion was ample, but the taste was not remarkable. However, I’m not ready to throw in the towel on this place just yet. Mediocre Chinese food still doesn’t mean that on some nights, it isn’t the best option available in the area. They do dim sum during the day and I would like to see what that is like. Plus it always helps to have a few more visits at different times of the day to get a feel for the place. So I dont think I’ll have a problem going back to give it another try on another day - I just know to adjust my expectations down a bit before I go.

I went there for lunch today with my wife and mother. We arrived at 11:30 and had to wait for about 20 minutes to be seated. It was well worth the wait. Once we were seated they began to bring us some of the best Dim Sum I've ever had. The only item we didn't really care for was the sweet and sour pork. Everything else was fantastic. There was a slight language barrier but one of the servers spoke excellent English and she tracked down and brought us items we had tried and wanted more of. We will definitely be back.

Crowded streets on a midday Saturday in this area! Nothing to look at in the way of decor, once inside the restaurant; and furnishing just acceptable. However, you take yourself out of little Portland to a major city dim sum when you walk in here. The servers are quick, and there is enough variety. At almost all of the many tables we passed, people were speaking one of several Asian languages. Even after 2:00, there was a 10 min. wait. Worth the wait!

We've been to the HK Cafe, not by choice, but because my in-laws insisted on going there. The first time we were there for dinner, we ordered the cold chicken dish. The waiter warned us that it was cold, which we said was okay. Traditionally the cold chicken dish is served with the chicken at or just below room temperature. Not this time: the chicken was *cold*, as in right out of the refrigerator. The last time we were there was for dim sum for lunch. Several of the deep-fried items were raw just inside their fried battered coating, including the sushi roll (chopped shrimp wrapped in nori and lightly battered before being fried) and the pepper salted squid. The tea was some strong chrysanthemum blend that was pretty unpleasant. The interior of the men's restroom has a scenic view of the adjacent busy street. And the hand soap dispenser is for adult-use only, as it's at least five feet off the floor! There are other options on that side of town--who cook their food more thoroughly. Consider your options before dining here.

My parents and I went here for lunch on Valentine's day and it was around Chinese Year celebration. The restaurant looks festive, tables and chairs all dressed for the occasions. We all enjoyed the dimsum and rice cake desserts. We had a better service this time as well. Keep it up! We will sure come back.

Just discovered this restaurant with great Cantonese cuisine. The clams & string beans are particularly good, and so is their wide selection of dim sum.

We showed at 10:30 am on a Saturday and the place was packed. Everything we ordered off of the carts was hot from the kitchen and tasty. Lots of staff around to help as well. Their portions are larger than what we usually expect, but, hey... I'll take it. This place is located in a strip mall rather than china town and there is a parking lot that can be challenging to get a nearby spot. Overall, well done HK.
Friendly service, good food
We were staying nearby & the hotel manager recommended this place, located in a small strip center. They had a large menu & enthusiastic wait staff. Minimal English, which we worked around easily. Service was fast & food was good.
