One of my favorite restaurants in Austin

By Omar N |

I love Asian food, and this is one of the best places in Austin that I can think of. I've enjoyed everything - and I do mean everything - I've had there. I don't eat pork, so I can't speak to that, but the beef and chicken have always been good. I usually get the vietnamese noodles with charbroiled chicken and a veggie egg roll. I put Hoisin and Sriracha sauce on it. I love the #13 soup, steak with traditional beef broth and rice noodle. I've had it several times and the meat as well as the broth have always been excellent. The food is a great value for the price. You can have more than enough food for than $10 (including tax and tip).

Was ok, but maybe unfair as I wasn't really hungry.

By Colinmc400 |

Wanted a quick dinner on the way home from the COTA. Stopped here when maybe I shouldn't have, cause I wasn't really hungry . Service was fine and food arrived quickly. I ordered spring rolls, but got deliverd rice paper rolls. No big deal and we ate them anyway. Also I ordered Pad Thai, but in a Vietnamese restaurant, that maybe wasn't the best choice, as it lacked a bit of something. Service good,, value good, just an off night for me.

Great Pho Ga and great service.

The title says is all. Stopped in after landing in AUS. Great Pho and friendly fast service. Just how it should be. Well done.

#72 Spicy stir fry combo- healthy happy craving

By Hank512 |

I am no expert on vietnamese food after being raised in the oilfields of West Texas, but I know what I like and it is the spicy stir fry combo with noodles at least once a week. I always start with spring rolls. I only need one and share one with a friend. This a nice light appetizer and the peanut sauce mixed with the red chili on the table completes the dish. The spicy stir fry is loaded with fresh broccoli bell pepper and other treats along with spicy jalapeno, shrimp, beef and chicken. Yum.

Great Food So So atmosphere

We keep going back, the food is always great. Service is prompt and the prices are modest. They have a broad menue, so you can find several dishes you like.

Great Food

By Austin L |

Great place to eat Asian food. I had veggie Pho and had them add chicken. The Pho was very tasty. Hubby ate Mongolian beef which he liked. Of course, I had to try the beef. The beef was tender and very tasty. Service was prompt. If you like people watching, there was an eclectic group of individuals. This restaurant was cozy and had wonderful paintings. I would definitely eat there again!!

I make Homer Simpon's drooling noises when I think of Hai Ky

By SouthAustinite |

I'm eating at Hai Ky in less than 12 hours and I cannot wait. I've been about 6-7 times in the past few months and have always been pleased with the service, the friendliness of the waitstaff, and the fresh, delicious food! My boyfriend always get the Pho which he raves about. I like to get the Beijing Noodles or...the #100? The #80? The names don't matter to me--I remember the number and am delivered a plate or bowl of Asian food heaven! I'm a vegetarian, and their vegetables are fresh and diverse, and their tofu has a wonderful texture. It's almost crispy, yet still tender--no spongy, tasteless blocks here! All their food is served with four bottles of sauces--Sriracha, hot chili sauce, fish sauce, and soy or Hoisin sauce. Portions are plentiful and prices (for me) run about $8. I love little gems like this housed away in a seedy E. Oltorf strip mall between Oat Willie's (an Austin institution/head shop) and a laundromat. Keep Austin yummy!

Must Have!

I try to eat here every time i'm in town. Love the spring rolls, pho, and the sesame chicken! Small parking lot, busy at lunch!

Lean meat and veggie option

By Bruce G |

I try to eat lean meats and veggies as the bulk of my diet. That being said, it is really hard to find a restaurant that has a good option along those lines. This place, although the noodles are probably the big attraction, will let me substitute extra veggies for the noodles or rice that normally comes with their stir fries. And it winds up being a lot of veggies! This has made this my go to place to eat in my neighborhood esp when I'm trying to eat right. I plan on patronizing them for a long, long time if they will keep letting me do this.

Location is now on Spicewood Springs Road in Austin, Texas

Don't Waste Your Time Here

By FunTraveler25 |

Unfortunately this new restaurant opened in the prior location of the fabulous Triumph Cafe whose owner was tired and closed on his own terms. The food quantity and quality are both lacking. The shrimp spring roll was about 2/3 the size of the predecessor, had small pieces of shrimp rather than whole shrimp and cost the same. The pork in the vermicelli was over cooked and the pieces were tiny. Finally the iced tea arrived with a few pieces of ice floating on the top and the refill was the same.

In love with this place in Westlake!

By KristyMiller |

I love, love, LOVE Hai Ky in Westlake!! My co-workers & I go there or order take out for lunch at least once a week. They have the best thai food ever. Everything is ready super fast, the prices are excellent, and the food is so freaking good! I cannot say enough about this place. If you haven't been you are missing out. Everything on the menu is good. I love the Buddha Delight make your own stir fry with chicken and vermicelli, number #95, and #96 with the crispy noodles. They also have great salads & vericelli bowls too. Serviously - everything is soooooo good! One of my favorite lunch spots!

Great food, even better prices!

I eat here almost every day. There is nothing on the menu over $8.99 and you get HUGE portions. Try the Ap Chao, number 96 on the menu. You will see heaven! The servers are quick and friendly and most have been working there for years so they can help you with any questions or custom orders, they are super knowledgeable.

Southeast Asian, Austin Funky

By FamousOriginalBob |

My new favorite vietnamese/southeast asian restaurant in town. Just a small nondescript storefront in an eastside strip center, maybe 10 tables, two of them big communal ones. I walked in and immediately got the sense that this place was Austin funky. The hipster waiter, ponytail up in a bun, greeted me with a "Hey, man", like we were old friends. The place is small, and the ambience is clean and industrial. The menu is mostly Vietnamese, with Thai and Chinese accents. There are some very creative preparations, which I plan to try when I go back, which will be frequently. What caught my eye was the "make your own stir fry", choice of meat, and sauces like "Thai curry" and "lemon grass", over vermicelli or rice. I ordered the stir fry beef with "hot pepper" sauce, and it was incredible. Big chunks of tender grilled beef and fresh thick-cut vegetables and hot peppers with a not-overwhelming spicy brown sauce. It was more food than I can eat, and I can eat a lot. Very, very impressed. Can't wait to go back.

Pho

Food was flavorful. Friendly, quick service. Stir fries were excellent. Egg rolls were OK. Convenient on Oltorf, near I35.

Quick inexpensive good food

If I'm in the area and in a rush, I eat here. I can be in and out in under 30 minutes and under $10 if I choose. The food is healthy and delicious. I recommend.

The new location in Westlake is quite good. Very fresh, good quality ingredients.

Some of the sauces can be overly rich but damn good. Think of it as a short exciting rollercoaster ride.

My Favorite place to go on Lunch

By Andrew S |

This place is located right by where I work. I always enjoy going here. The food is really tastey and the price is right. The people there are very nice and always say hi to me. I usually get the same few items, however whenever I expand, I am never disappointed. I would come here every day if I could afford it. This is a must have for someone who wants good Vietnamese food!

Another awesome place for pho. Usually about a dollar more in price than a place down the street. Good spring rolls.

It's our local dive

By Christine M |

Hai Ky is one of our favorite neighborhood spots. It is small and not fancy. But the food ... omergawd. We avoid the lunch hour if possible because it is so packed. Dinner is not usually too bad. When you have a cold, the veggie pho will hit the spot. When it's hot outside and you want something lighter, don't be afraid to feel predictable and go for the pad thai. If you are craving spice and good flavor, you can't go wrong with the Spicy Hai Tofu. My personal favorite, however, continues to be 101 - hu tieu ap chao chay (strips of pan fried noodles with tofu and vegetables). You can ask to have it "extra crispy." This will crisp up the noodles more than normal. Although *sometimes* that causes the tofu to be slightly overcooked. It is not a health-conscious dish, but it makes my heart go pitter-patter. We always love our wait staff. They are super chill. The food is a great value. We go back often, and many times crave it even if we've already been that week.

So far, best Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. Vermicelli bowls are excellent. Pho is so good too. Very clean restaurant, perfect for lunch hour.

Spring rolls and Hu Tieu Ap Chao

By Jo C |

Order #96 for a special treat. So delicious with chicken, beef and shrimp, and every possible fresh vegetable. The spring rolls (as mentioned on many posts) are indeed lovely. Food came out quickly and hot. Bargain win!

Didn't feel like real Vietnamese food

By Jorge L |

tried three items: Dumplings, pretty good Chicken Fried Rice, not good at all, lack of flavor, color and Asian tempo Pho Ga, so so at best The place is clean and modern, but run by gringos, it just doesn't work that way. Easy test, and believe me it always works. If there are no Asians in Asian restaurants, some thing is lacking in the food. Has beer, maybe by being drunk one can like it more...

Authentic as all get out.

I have no idea what to order (my daughter does that) but everything we eat there is fabulous. Staff is very friendly and will help you out. It's Austin, eat local.

Great S. Austin Find

By Margaret W |

Our favorite Vietnamese restaurant is up north: Pho Van. So, we were interested in finding a good place in South Austin. This was our first time at Hai Ky so we got our "usuals". I got Bun with grilled pork. My husband got the Pho (he has to have Pho at least once a week to be happy -- usually goes to a place in Bee Caves when he is working). The Pho was as good at Pho Van. Really tasty broth, good quality meat with little fat on it. The Bun was very good -- different from others I had had: the carrot pieces were bigger than at most places -- fine with me. The Pork was cut up into small pieces and was great quality -- very little fat and no gristle. Made it nicer since it distributed into the rest of the dish better. There were fewer noodles than usual and that was fine too -- total volume was perfect and I got lots of veggies. Yum. The Cafe Su Dah was very nice. We were thrilled to find such a good place closer to home!

Great food, great service. Vietnawesome!

I got stuck on a layover in Austin and was in a nearby hotel off Oltorf Blvd. Found this place on TA with great reviews. I went in around 1pm, not expecting to see what I saw. Very small restaurant, seats maybe 50 folks, but there was a line out the door (always a great sign to foodies like me). A line, and its cold outside, this has to be good. The line moved quickly and I was seated. If you are not into rubbing elbows in a "everyone is your neighbor" table setting, then don't go. If there is an open seat, they will put you in it. I was alone, so in I went. I was greeted as soon as I sat and gave my drink order and as soon as she returned with my drink I ordered and the food was on the table within 5 minutes, hot and fresh. I ordered the Spring rolls which came with some awesome peanut sauce. They were wrapped in rice paper and stuffed full of awesomeness. Def get these for an app if you go. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken as it had great reviews. It was spicy, it was everything Kung Pao is supposed to be. I was joined by a local lady that has lived in Austin for 40 years and we talked at length about how Austin has changed in recent years. Thats whats cool about this place (in addition to the food). You may find yourself dining with a stranger, and thats always cool when you are eating alone. In any case I ate for under 20 bucks including drink and tax. The food tasted awesome ,was hot and fresh and the service was great. If you are in the area this is some great eats. Enjoy!

I could eat this all the time. It's affordable. It's honest and true, like Lincoln whistling melodies under the skirt of a freshly washed milk maiden.
