We had lunch here (warning - prices are identical to dinner) recently in search of one of our favorite Midwest fish: Yellow Lake Perch. The meal came with a generous portion of french fries and 8 nice-sized (6 inche +/-) fillets deep fried and tartar sauce. The dish was hot an flavorful, lacking only the melted butter normally seen with this fish for drizzling. The manager was friendly and helpful. For those not familiar with this place, the restaurant is below street level and will remind you of an old worn nieghborhood dive bar, but the food is very good. Each plate was $18 at the time of our visit.

My husband is a big crab fan. I picked this place per TA recommendation. This place is small, no reservation so had to come early on Saturday to avoid waiting. Didn't know that it's a bartender choice where to seat you when you come in and not yours. You will see this sign when you enter the door to the right side of the bar. The place was almost full except of two tables, one table with 5 seat located inches to the entrance door and other table with 5 seat further from the entrance door. This night that we came in to celebrate my husband birthday was rainy, cold and i prefer eating comfortably without wearing our coat, so i looked at the bar tender, told him 4 people and he nodded, i went in to the other table away from the door but called me in and told me to seat near the door. Mind you there was nobody behind us or waiting. Few minutes later, our waitress came and i asked her about the other table if it is reserve but she said no, told her what happened and she said it is for 5 people, didn't offer us if we would like to move. Twenty minutes later, someone walked in with 4 people and was given that other table. I was little irritated because every time the door opened, we feel the cold wind from outside. Half shell to me is more like a bar/lounge than a restaurant feeling to it and starting to regret coming to celebrate a special occasion to this place but we ordered anyway to try. The noise was so bad that i could not hear my husband talking to me and i had to move next to him from across since his starting to get irritated since i kept saying what. Before our ordered came in, the other people in the corner were leaving and i told our waitress if we can move since it was so cold, by this time there were other people waiting but glad our waitress said yes. The crab cakes. fried eggplant, chowder soup we ordered were very good and tasty but not so much the lobster bisque. The king crab was big and meaty that satisfied my husband's craving so I was happy. I wanted to order the whole dinner snapper but was told they run out (at 6pm?) so i choose fried scallop which was a mistake for me. My kids ordered fried shrimp and grilled shrimp which was very good and tasty as well. I told our waitress that this is our first time and my husband's birthday when she asked us thinking that she might do something special like maybe singing a happy birthday or a candle of something but no. Just a bill and a container to go. The bill was actually very good for 4 people for what we ordered but I will go somewhere else for all of our special occasion celebrations instead of this place.

We went to the half Shell one afternoon based on price for Crab Legs.We were told that you get 1 1/2 LB for 15 dollars..We arrived via taxi and we walked downstairs and walked inside..We sat down and it was so dark that we couldn't read the menus.I ordered the king Crab Legs.we ordered drinks, and they came 10 minutes later.I had to chase down the waiter to order another round. The meal came and they were the biggest legs i have ever seen,They were very sweet and tasty, but not worth the $ 35.00.that i payed. If you want the best Crab Legs in the city,go to Devon. The price is a little more but they crack them for you.And the upstairs is very romantic..

My husband and I were taken to the Half Shell while on a business trip over a decade ago but it was late and having already had dinner did not partake of the legendary crab legs...much to our later regret. We always talked about "the biggest legs we had ever seen at this dive bar in Chicago" but we could never remember the name of the place. We finally tracked it down again through a local, and 14 years later went back to do what we neglected to do the first time. Prepare to wait for a table and prepare for the best crab legs east of Alaska! The Half Shell is all about food. Great value too. Hopefully it won't be another 14 years before we go back!!!

Yeah, it's a basement dive bar, but the food is REALLY good. Eleven tables and a bunch of seats at the bar. Cash only--no credit cards, no checks. Men cannot wear hats inside, and if you have armpit hair, your shirt must have sleeves. You won't be seated until your entire party is there. If you're okay with these rules and don't mind eating in a dive basement bar, then GO THERE! It is such a cool neighborhood place. Very casual. We've been making the long drive in to Half Shell from the suburbs since sometime in the 1980's and I'm glad to report that when we were there last weekend, the owner told us the next generation is standing by to continue operation when he retires, so we will continue going there for fun dinners with our family as long as we live in the area. I have never ordered any main dish other than the Alaskan King Crab Legs. You get a ton of them for the money. If you think of it, bring a pair of kitchen scissors to help you get through the legs before they start to get cold, because THERE'S A LOT OF 'EM! My wife always gets the shrimp and beef tenderloin dinner. We have never been disappointed. I also enjoy their sliced tomatoes and onions appetizer that's served with their homemade dressing, which is something very close to a Caesar's dressing. The bar is full service, so you can have pretty much anything to drink with your meal. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night, expect a long wait, especially in the summer. We went on a Sunday afternoon and shared the whole place with only two or three other parties. During the summer, they have outdoor seating as well. It can get pretty loud inside when it's packed, and the lighting is fairly dim. If you're in town for a Cub's game, you might want to consider stopping in here before or after the game. It's a short 1/2 mile walk east from the Diversey El Station on the Brown and Purple Lines. Street parking can be a challenge because most of the side streets are for residential permit parking only. Look for parking on Diversey or Clark and expect a walk of a couple blocks.

You would not expect this good quality food in an underground location. But Half Shell honors it's close to 50 years in business at the same location. Fresh oysters, fantastic king crab and crab legs...... And plenty of beer..... Highly recommended.

Definitely a neighborhood dive bar. Old and no frills, but the food was great for a late-night find. Clam chowder and lobster bisque were excellent as was the blue point oysters. The fried clams were a little bland, but the homemade sauces helped. Overall, a fun find.

Classic Chicago. Shell fish the way it was meant to eat, with a beer! Great place for local and visitor alike. Not a jacket and tie place, great food and fun.

Really wonderful sea food. You have to visit. Alaska and Maine treats are here...lobster clamps, and wine!

The food was amazing!! I ordered the fried shrimp for app. Lightly fried with amazing sauces, King crab app was also awesome. Be prepared to take plenty left on your plate. Portions are shareable. King Crab legs were fresh and sweet. Broiled shrimp was meaty and succulent. Bartenders are awesome. Ask for Anthony. Had a great time with my sisters there. A must eat!

unshell your own, for great prices on fantastic seafood.

I ducked in for a quick dinner at Half Shell on a week night, and was pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately and served quickly. The dining room looks like it was imported from Boston in the 1960's. Shabby sheek with lots of memorabilia contributing to a seafood vibe. I ordered calimari, and a large portion came out hot with a light batter. It was fresh and delectable, not rubbery like you get in pretend seafood restaurants. The staff was friendly and the price was reasonable, making it worth the effort to find street parking in this busy neighborhood at the 6 o'clock hour. I recommend Half Shell to seafood lovers who appreciate good tasting seafood in a funky atmosphere.

Theirs are delicious and gigantic! Lobster bisque Shrimp and corn chowder, yummy ! Reasonably priced cocktails. Need I say more?

this restaurant feels like coming home. I have never been disappointed when coming to this place for over 25 years. Food is outstanding and you feel like you have stumbled on a real gem.

A Chicago institution. Great crab legs at a reasonable price in a quaint space. Service is simple and efficient. Good bar selection. Come casual, ask for the specials and don't forget cash. They do not accept credit cards.

Best crab I've ever had. Christmas lights year round in this basement restaurant. Owner has always been there when I have been and is super friendly. Easy train ride from downtown Chicago. Its a must when in north Chicago. It is a cash only establishment!

Looks like a dive but WOW

Yes, it’s in the downstairs basement and may not have been redecorated this century (an old timey bar feel with Christmas lights), but the seafood is excellent! Bring cash because they don’t take anything else.

This is one of those small basement cafe/bars you might walk past but you really need to try. They have a limited seafood menu but everything is fresh and tasty. Try the bluepoint oysters and/or the crab leg plate along with a cold Heiniken on tap. Excellent!!

We sat on the patio. The weather was perfect. The food was amazing. I had so many King Crab legs I couldn't finish them. My husband got shrimp and the portion was very generous.

OMG!!! Love this place. Casual, relax atmosphere with delicious food. My third time eating crab here. Can't wait to go back. Staff is casual and nice. The best crab in Chicago (better than Shaws).

This is a small place but busy . I felt welcomed here and received great service, prices are reasonable and a varied menu , something for everyone . I had an awesome experience .

Dungeness, King and Snow crab! If you’re looking for a down to earth joint to enjoy seafood- you’ve found your place! Reasonable prices and delicious and fresh food! You will not be disappointed!

Stumbled upon this little gem after a recommendation from a Chicagoan. Casual diner, has alfresco option to dine (recommended on a lovely day) and a dingy looking basement pub (very dark and gloomy - think True Blood) with more tables. They don't take reservations so it is first come first served. We (party of 3) turned up at about 630pm mid week and couldn't get a table outside unless we were prepared to wait approx 30 minutes. Easier to get tables for 2 as there were a few available. We went for their house special - a massive serving of Alaskan king crab legs and snow crab legs combo, sides include fries, toast, pickle, tomatoes, and some greens. The waiter kindly showed us how we should crack the shell open as we spent ages trying to prise them off the meat. Once we got the knack of it, eating them was a much more enjoyable experience. They were absolutely delicious, comes with a fantastic garlic dip, and an absolute bargain at $30. It can get a bit messy though, with crab juice spurting everywhere and sliding down wrists so planning a night out on town after that may not be ideal unless you are OK with smelling of seafood. I would highly recommend it, we loved it so much that this is the only restaurant we are dining at twice before leaving Chicago!

Specializes in seafood. Wide selection; great menu. Atmosphere not fancy, but pleasant to sit outside. Wait staff very friendly. if visiting Chicago, it's a great alternative to the downtown restaurants.

Tried crab for the first time ever at this spot! Positively shocked by portions & prices. Boyfriends' parents are devoted regulars, coming to this place for past 25-30yrs; that says alot. Loving thechill oldshool vibes floating around in this unexpected basement setup.

Happened by this “hole in the wall” while walking around the neighborhood near our hotel. Indoor & outdoor seating but indoor is down steep stairs so not handicap friendly. Great fresh oysters & crab. Friendly good service. What’s not to love?!

At least the waiter admitted his mistake. He did give us a free salad. Chicago seems to love this place but we found it quite ordinary.

Hard to find the place but seafood is good. Avoid the lobster bisque if you don’t like soup too creamy. The England chowder is great, oyster is ok, cherry stone is good. We tried so many dishes and was sooo full and happy😋

Saw this place when out walking and thought I'd try it as I love my seafood... The place - it is truly a dive (but that's not the cause for my low rating ) the man behind the bar vaguely motioned us to a table for 2.....and another middle aged man came over with 2 a4 laminated menus. Waved to the wall where the specials were and walked off. I had to ask for table water, and then had to wait for ages for a refill!!! The appetiser was calamari (read chewy squid rings) which were hot but lacked flavor... Which included the dipping sauce. My choice of main was supposed to include a large serving of fries (that it did!!!) and lettuce and tomato.... One lettuce leaf and slice of tomato does cut it, the salmon although tasty was greasy and overcooked. The entire meal was greasy and fatty tasting - not the freshness I was expecting, combined with the total lack of interest by the wait staff (spent all their time watching baseball on the tv) I would never recommend nor come back to this place, And the fact I had to tip left quite a bad taste in my mouth!!!

I know I've reviewed this restaurant before, but I feel compelled to sing its praises every time we go there. We live 35 miles away in the suburbs, and today, my wife and I drove in just to have lunch there with her sister and brother-in-law. We are longtime repeat customers and look forward to continue going back. We arrived shortly after 12:00 noon and got a table right away, which is not always the case when going there on a weekend or evening. There were only one or two other tables occupied. We ordered a couple of shrimp cocktail appetizers and one order of their tomato and onion appetizer. The tomato and onion is served in a Caesar's dressing, and both dishes are delicious. I think we order this same set of appetizers every time we go. My wife ordered the shrimp and tenderloin, my sister-in-law order fried shrimp, and my brother-in-law and I both ordered our usual Alaskan King Crab legs. All of the food and accompanying drinks (Half Shell is also a full bar) were great. Half Shell has upped their prices over the years to keep up with inflation, but the prices are still reasonable considering the decent portions they give you. Remember, if you go, bring cash, because they don't take checks or credit cards. They do have an ATM in the back of the restaurant if you come empty handed. As my wife mentioned to me today, the only thing she doesn't like about going to Half Shell is finding parking. There is a parking garage around the corner, just north on Clark, but we have always managed to find street parking within a couple blocks. On the positive side, there are lots of unique shops in this area, so if you have to walk a bit from your car, you can do a little window shopping at the same time! I am already looking forward to our next visit to Half Shell!

Yum! Simple, steamed crab legs. Prices are also very good. The bad side is you probably have to wait awhile or sit inside which is kinda dark and dingy.

On a quest to find the top 20 most Beloved Chicago Institutions - This is in the top 10 ! - Seafood served in an authentic Chicago's 1968 version of a coastal town local hangout. This basement dive bar is packed beyond capacity with people who wait a long time to get in for the King Crab lets and pitchers of beer. This seafood joint is worth the wait. The systems were set in place many- many years ago so don't be in a rush Our waitress has been there forever and we sit in amazement how she works the very busy loud crowded room - she is a small woman and walks through a true maze of people crushed between the bar and the tightly packed tables as if she is on autopilot! Super nice! - Everyone orders the king crab.platter- Heaps and heaps of King Crab served on a white platter, a top a French fries and white bread triangles... it is fantastically authentic and a must do if you love to check off top ten best Chicago Institutions from your bucket list. The Chicago Bar Projects website has a great long review. So great :D

We took my daughter there for her birthday and she loved it! Occupies a walk-down space of a building in a residential area. It's basically an old school corner bar with with a dozen small tables that delivers some awesome seafood. We went after 9:00 PM and had no wait whatsoever. Portions are huge and Alaskan crab was well prepared and tasty. Menu was limited but you kinda know why you're there going in. Prices are commensurate with quality of food although cash is king here, no credit cards. You've been warned!

Everything is fresh, steamed perfectly, and served quickly. East side neighborhood not far from Wrigley. Basement bar in an old brownstone. friendly neighborhood vibe with attitude.

First off, this is CASH ONLY. It is a bar with some tables. Located under the steps of an apartment building. See the bartender when you walk in if you want a table. This is a VERY informal place, It is more of a local landmark. The King Crab Legs are huge. it was $37.00 for the legs and worh every cent! It is nice not to have to fight to find some crab like at other places. My friend could not finish all of hers because of the size of it. They are served with fries and a sucker. Yes a sucker. They have other seafood but get the King Crab Legs. Its a grugy place and you are in a basement but it's part ot the charm.

I love this place. It is a dive but the food and service are exceptional!! When I walked in I was warmly greeted and made to feel welcome!!

We were in Chicago and walked to Half Shell for lunch on a Sunday. It’s down a few steps and is old time Chicago inside. We started with oysters on the half shell which were large, plump and very fresh. Delicious! I had the scallops, and my companions had soft shell crabs, and king crab legs. Each dish was served with French fries, a butter sauce and sour cream with chives on the side. All of it was fabulous!Service was prompt and attentive. We will be back for sure!

Great little seafood joint close to the Days Inn on Diversey. Great price, good service. It is CASH ONLY! I had oysters that were HUGE; wife had crab legs. Make sure to check in with the bartender for your table.

This evening I treated a family member to have dinner at the Half Shell. I had the Grilled Shrimp. Do Not order this meal. The shrimp where not cleaned because the shrimp where grilled in their shells. The fly that keep landing on my food enjoyed the food more than did. Would I eat at this place again No. Please clean the shrimp, use seasoning then grill the shrimp.

This is a gem of a Chicago secret. If you don't know what you are looking for you would walk right past it. The Half Shell has been around since 1968 and it's the perfect little dive with amazing seafood. The Half Shell located on a corner in the Lincoln Park neighborhood is nestled below street level. You enter downstairs and into restaurant/ bar. The bar is on the right and there are tables lined against the left hand wall. The walls are decorated with campy sea memorabilia and the bathroom actually has a tub in it (non-working of course.) The service is always friendly and I think the bartender has been there since they opened. It's small and the best times to go are lunch or before 7 pm unless you don't mind a wait. Now for the important stuff, the food! They have some of the best seafood! They have king crab, snow crab, clams, mussels, mulligan stew, and so much more! My favorite are the crab legs. I love the king and snow crab combo. It's so much I can never finish. The food is always fresh and I have never had a bad experience. Here's a tip, ask for your butter to be warmed. They have a great butter herb mixture on the tables. There's a twist at the Half Shell but I won't tell you. You have to visit to find out what the sides are and the special treat on your plate. They have a full bar and many beers on tap. My favorite drink they have during the winter is a hot buttered rum! The first time I had one, the bartender told me it tasted like "Christmas." He was right, it's the best way to describe it. This is a must stop for any visitor and definitely any Chicagoan! Don't miss out!

I've been going to the Half Shell for many years. It's always great food and a fun atmosphere. The ice cold Heineken on tap goes so well with crab legs, fries and lollipop. Although you may have reservations about going downstairs into a basement to eat, it's really a treat - that's why there's always a wait. Try the sashimi - amazing!

The Half Shell is a cozy dive bar with great seafood! You walk downstairs to enter and you are always greeted with a friendly hello. They always have daily specials and usually have King crab legs available at a reasonable price. We visit this place several times a year just us or with friends. It's a small place so there aren't an abundance of tables so go early:). Around the holidays, they have hot buttered rum. For years I turned my nose up but when we went recently i tried one. I asked our server what it tasted like and he said people say "Christmas." I braved up and tried it and it is lovely. It's hot, buttery, and brown sugary. Try it! We always try to go before the dinner rush and they are cash only. They have an ATM on premises. I love their old fashioned cash registers. A great hidden gem!

Every time we head to Chicago we try to go to this secret little hole in the wall! It's nothing fancy inside but they serve a generous portion of King Crab that can't be beat! And the garlic butter they serve to dip it in is amazing! As appetizers we like to get either oysters on the half shell or the peel and eat shrimp! Can't wait to go back

Based on a recommendation, we had “Half Shell” on our "Go to List" for a while. The opportunity presented itself for an after movie dinner. As commented in other review, the place had caught us off guard by an unpleasant scent and lack of patrons, maybe early 3:30. Ordered Char-Broiled Shrimp, it came with the shell on and appeared to have been boiled and briefly charred for effects. Having the shell on led to “these have to still have the mud vein in them" making for a not so tasty over boiled lump of shrimp. The King Crab was luke warm and over cooked, the melted butter had the flavor of, garlic & margarine. The fries were stale and cold. This was really not a pleasurable experience, we're tolerable and been in dives where the food was outstanding, but the service was poor and the quality vs. cost was sub-par.

If you are looking for a place that has amazing crab legs you have to go here. It's in Lincoln Park. It looks like a complete dive but is a great place to eat, drink and enjoy! Great atmosphere just to hang out with friends, not fancy at all. I am a "local" and would highly recommend! Prices are typical for crab legs.

While visiting Chicago for the Cubs opening day, we stumbled upon this place. When web1st walked up we thought it was closed. Lol. But as we made our way down the steps what a HUGE surprise we had. What an awesome place to have dinner and a couple of drinks!!! 1st the owner / bartender was friendly on point. The food, well let's just say......was over the top, we have eaten at top dollar restaurants where you have to wait to be seated and dressed......This place was all around excellent, tenderloins and crab, and shrimp were delicious! And plenty of it. We had the fried oysters for an appetizer. The drinks were great too. This will become a must visit for us on our Chicago trips. You can't go wrong eating here. I highly recommend this place.

If you want really sweet crab legs at a great price in a funky relaxed very small atmosphere this is the place. Service isn't 5 star but fun place. Cash only. You won't regret it.

The Half Shell is an interesting place -- seemed like it was full of locals, not tourists, which we like. It is a "pub and oyster bar." I got the crab cakes which were very disappointing. They were small and fried -- not like any crab cakes I've had before. My husband had friend scallops which he said were very good. My daughter had snow crabs and tenderloin which were excellent (I helped her finish).

great seafood neat small place thia is really a must go to very reasonable prices nice staff good locatio9n

Bring your wet wipes! King crab and Snow crab combo plate - the best. The amount you get is worth the wait and tastes amazing. Don't come anticipating having a quiet relaxing meal. Bring your cash, as this place is a cash only restaurant and bar. Not too often do you see a bathtub in the bathroom either! Great place with a casual eclectic atmosphere with great food. Will be back.

This no frills bar on Diversey in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood is a well kept secret for oyster and crab lovers. It is a tiny, cramped basement space, and has been there for years. In the past couple of years they have added sidewalk tables during the summer which almost doubles their capacity at that time of year. The place is packed every Friday and Saturday, no reservations, but the huge steaming plate of king crab legs served with white toast, fries, drawn butter and a lollipop is to die for and a favorite with the locals. Prepare to wait for a table, then be cramped, and get messy eating, the crab legs, at about $35 a plate are worth it! Cash only, no reservations

Picked Half Shell for dinner with my wife and almost 13 yr old for my 50th birthday. It is super casual (jeans and a nice t-shirt) is fine. Seems like Christmas lights are up all year round. Was not crowded on a Tuesday night. Go for the King Crab legs. My wife and son love them. They come with fries, some toasted white bread, and a sucker. And it's great. I opted for the King Crab Legs and Filet combo. The file is a good piece of meat, tender, but it is not what you would get at a steakhouse so don't expect it. Have had the fried soft shell crab and shrimp in the past and they are good but you go for the Crab legs. Small wine list but it's fine. Most important - it is cash only. I think that they have an ATM, with a $20 limit. I learned the hard way in the past on one occasion. (I've been there many times, and the crab legs never disappoint). They give you a cracker/sheller but my wife usually brings scissors and it makes it much easier to open them.

Great dive bar for good King and Snow crab legs! We visit here every couple of months, when we crave crab. Please note, Cash Only. The ambiance is dark and dirty; the service is sub-par, but the crab legs rock! For $30 you get about a pound and a half of King and Snow Crab Legs with fries, pickle and a lollipop, all served with their garlic butter dipping sauce, yum! It'a all about the crab legs, but the oysters are good too! One of my favorite seafood places. Just good crab!

There's a reason why this restaurant that's not heavily advertised, the basement of a 3 flat has been around forever....... IT'S THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

Great no frills neighborhood place for crab & beers. Very casual. The place is pretty small and depending on the time of day there may be a wait. You should plan sit outside and I think it may be cash only.

Our friends have been talking about this place for years and we finally made it here. As other reviewers have said, this is not a swanky, hip, or upscale restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. And if you want your server to do more than bring what you order, then you are best going somewhere else. Everyone in our group of 10 were very happy with their appetizers and entrees. Personally, once I saw the lake perch on the menu I knew what I was going to get. It is not often that I see lake perch on a menu (last I heard it cannot be commercially fished in the great lakes) and whenever I see it, I must get it. It was amazing!!!!!! Will definitely be going back to this little hole in the wall!

I have been dining here since 1978, when I lived in Chicago. Every time I go back, this is a must stop. I guarantee that anyone that enjoys seafood will go nuts here. The staff is excellent and as I said the food is mouthwatering. Watch your step going down the stairs and take a taxi as there is no parking anywhere.

We come here a few times a year, and this year we have vowed to come more often. We went for my husband's birthday. We had the dungeness crab, so delish, and so fresh. The prices are not cheap but you get what you pay for. You want premier seafood you have to spend a little bit of cash. We sat outside had some great drinks, some great food and the atmosphere is so fun! The wait staff is so friendly and helpful, you feel like you are part of the family! Cant say enough good things!

Best crablegs in town!

I have been here twice and the food is always good. The jumbo fried shrimp is tasty and you get a load of food. Be awarw, cash only. Guys, remove your hats before entering.

I almost don't want to write a review about this place because it is one of the best kept secrets in Chicago! Alas, I am sharing with you. They are located down a half flight of steps and it is what some of you may call an absolute dive of a restaurant and bar. WHO CARES!?!?!? The food is fantastic and the prices are wonderful. We started with the oysters on the half shell (gotta stick with the namesake of the restaurant) and no mistake was made there. The oysters were fresh and wonderful and that homemade cocktail sauce was the best I have had in a very long time. Kudos for going heavy on the horseradish! For a main course we both decided the soft shell crab was the way to go. They were perfect. I was tempted to order more but that would have been just too much food. The table next to us got the king crab legs and they were huge! The servers were friendly and the service was quick. Don't go in there expecting any five star dinner service with the best linens and china because you are going to get paper napkins and a plastic basket for some of the selections. What you are going to get is some of the best seafood in Chicago. Prices are reasonable but be warned, stop at an ATM first because they are CASH ONLY! There is a small outside dining area but the atmosphere of the interior is a wonderful trip to the past as it probably is as it was when they first opened there in 1968. They are busy so be prepared to wait for a table. So enjoy it and sit at the bar and order a drink from the past and live the atmosphere. We will be back when we are in Chicago.

The Half Shell remains unchanged since the late 50's, and boy does it look like it! But let's face it, you're not coming for the decor, right? If you are, you're in the wrong place. What you come for is the seafood. Piles of steaming King Crab that melt in your mouth. Delicious oysters to start off your meal. A nice glass of wine. Zippy service. This place gets crazy busy. I don't think they take reservations - and they don't take credit. If you're party doesn't arrive together, they won't seat you until you're all there. During that time your table can be given away - which would keep you from the yummy seafood. I love this place.

Cozy neighborhood seafood bar. Very casual with friendly staff. My food was good and the beer was cold. I had the tuna steak but crab legs are their specialty. Be advised that it is CASH ONLY! ATM available.

Fun, no frills place with great food! Love crab? Love specials that you get allot for your money then your in the right spot. Crab legs with fries, bread grilled onion, tomatoes and pepper with tenderloins of filet$ 20 how can you beat that and I couldn't finish it all. Amazing crab cakes, best I have ever had. Wines all great big bar and the staff just good people bringing you good food. If your in the area you would be silly not to go!

Every time we are in Chicago, it has become a tradition to have lunch at the Half Shell. Our favorites are the salads, shrimp, frog legs, crab cakes as well as a good offering of beers. The menu features many other fish and seafood offerings. We always go for lunch as the place gets very busy in the evenings...........not a very large place and it can be body to body in there......but still a good time!!!!

Half Shell at 676 West Diversey Parkway, located in the basement of an old brownstone on the northeast corner of Orchard and Diversey, west of Clark Street, has been dishing out some of the best seafood in Chicago since 1968. It is a no-frills, cash only, no reservations, in the basement, no parking, neighborhood pub with an extensive seafood menu and plenty of raw bar selections that boasts it is a "great pub and oyster bar" and produces "the best crab legs in town." Some customers insist that Half Shell offers the best seafood east of Cape Cod. That might not be an exaggeration. On thing is for sure: you won't be dazzled by its decor...low ceiling, long and crowded bar and an entrance eight steps below street level. But it's all part of Half Shell's charm. Al Pacino once ate there. So it can't be all bad. In fact, it's darn good. We don't indulge in crab legs or oysters or clams or mussels or squid or smoked chub and onions or fried catfish or smoked Sturgeon and onions or even the house specialty, steamed Dungeness crab and snow crab and King crab legs, cold or steamed. And we weren't tempted by the 1 ounce of imported Romanoff Blue Seal caviar for $38. But we love other kinds of seafood and Half Shell has plenty of it. Start with the shrimp appetizer (I can never get enough shrimp) or the mulligan stew. There are so many wonderful options for dinner. I couldn't resist the broiled jumbo shrimp and beef tenderloin. My wife opted for the scallops. But I must admit it was difficult to pass up the whole red snapper, the char-broiled salmon, filets of Lake perch and fried tilapia. If the "most succulent King crab legs ever" are your pleasure, this is the place. But I heartily recommend the shrimp or the red snapper, which can't be found on too many menus. And the lollipop is a nice treat to end the dinner.

Maybe the reason why it has taken me so long to discover the Half Shell restaurant is because it is a pub and oyster bar and boasts "the best crab legs in Chicago" and I don't drink or like crab legs or oysters. But it has other positive features and it isn't far from my home. So here I am. And I'm liking it. Located at 676 West Diversey Parkway in the city's Lakeview neighborhood, Half Shell is the longest running crab house in Chicago. It was opened in 1968 by Danny Denizman and grandson Anthony assumed ownership in 2019. This is a seafood restaurant with an underground or basement dining room staffed almost entirely by women. It is a cash only, no reservations, no hats allowed business that features a seafood boil and an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet. Open from 4 to 10 Monday through Thursday, 4 to 10:30 on Friday, noon to 10:30 on Saturday and noon to 10 on Sunday, its entrees are served in a red plastic basket on a bed of French fries atop a lone piece of white bread and accompanied by a pickle and lollipop for dessert. I started with a jumbo shrimp cocktail with house cocktail sauce, saltines, sweet and sour sauce and lemon, a bowl of New England clam chowder with potatoes, carrots, onion, lams and peppery cream and a house salad with lettuce, tomato, onion and house dressing. For my entree, I chose broiled jumbo shrimp and beef tenderloin with grilled onions, peppers and tomatoes. Loved the lollipop.l

We need to put this place on the map. Seriously. While they do not take kindly to hats or credit card, they provide the best the best Alaskan King Crab I have ever had, bigger than you thumb. It is a dive bar, but the food they serve up is amazing. I will always be a customer.

A 35 year fave of mine. A Chicago neighborhood temple of good food, casual talk and never disappointing food. Some of the BEST seafood you can find in Chicago. Don't be put off by the dimly lit basement or Not There To Impress The Likes of You bartender. Trust me, your in for a real treat. The salad and shrimp are Palm quality, and crab legs solid, You walk into dimly basement and the bartender might give you a nod, while making drinks for the cast of neighborhoods hanging at the bar. If you're lucky. Someone will come and toss a menu down and maybe crack a joke. Let it begin! Enjoy.

We went walking, looking for a place for lunch and happened on to this delightful family run seafood restaurant. Very old and well maintained. It would appear that everyone who works there is family. The restaurant is downstairs and on the small size with a generous sized bar. There is outside seating but we were inside due to it raining intermittently. The menu was straight forward seafood. My lovely partner had the soft shell crab sandwich and I had the oyster Po-boy with double oysters. The meal came with bountiful fries. It paired well with unsweetened ice tea and Coors light, as did a baker's half dozen east coast raw oysters. Everything was fresh and delicious. We wood eat there again without hesitation.

Great seafood. Huge plates of crab and cold beer. You have to look close or you will miss it. Go for the food not the atmosphere. Cash only.

This is my number one spot for seafood!! I absolutely love this place and you can sit outside in the summer!!

I don't get it. Alaskan King Crab legs selling like hotcakes in the middle of the United States! This is a very busy neighborhood place close to Lincoln Park. The cute hostesses were very sweet, but the waiter...not so much. For $47 (cash only) you get salty, soggy crab legs, and fries. I did not look at the rest of the menu, because the crab legs are what they are know for. I would look, next time.

The Half Shell continues to be a hidden spot for seafood in plain view - down a half story fro Diversey Parkway street level. The bar is convivial and the menu focused on simply prepared seafood. My crab legs were very good - a generous serving over fries, toast and a lollipop. My wife's shrimp were delicious, as well. Service was very prompt.

We came here for dinner on a Friday night around 7pm. To our surprise, there was no wait (even though the outdoor sitting area is very small). My husband and I shared several items from the menu - crabcakes, calamari, half a dozen of oysters, and king crab legs. The crabcakes and calamari were excellent, while the oysters were disappointing - small and dirty. The king crab legs were tasty, but you can buy the same ones from Mariano's or WFM so nothing special. Service was a bit slow as well. We agreed that it wasn't worth the money and will not return.

My wife, son and I have been going to Half Shell for a decade. My teen loves it and has since he was 10. It’s very casual, which is great. Stick with the crab legs, served with soggy fries, white bread toast. Pass on the steak. Prices have gone up in a decade, which is not surprising. The quality of the crab is always top notch. It’s a top 10 hidden gem of Chicago.

What a great place. Total dive bar and you would never expect the delicious seafood they serve up. Been going here for years and it's always been great. The only downfall is the butter. It's decent but it's not your typical clarified butter. Don't get me wrong though, the crab legs are so good they don't need butter. Also try the clam chowder and any other special soup they may have that day. Say hi to Alex while you're there, he's been working there for over 30 years.

If you want good, well priced seafood in Chicago, this is the place. The portions are large and it has a divey, homegrown kinda atmosphere. It's small, so plan to wait unless it's nice out, in which case, there's a patio seating area!

I have fond memories of this restaurant. Back in the day before smart phones, actually 26 years ago I frequented the Half Shell on dates. Tonight I shared dinner with my 22 year old son. He ordered the fried eggplant, which they peeled and we believe, they deep fried. It was not good. But the crab cakes were excellent as was the grilled tuna. The fries they served were tasteless and a tad on the greasy side. Again, another 1. So two 1s and two 5s and you end up average.

Mmm steamed king crab, can't beat the prices! Basic but delish.

Great food, great atmosphere, I can't wait to go back." A neighborhood pub, where everyone is treated as a regular! I expected Norm and Cliff at the end of the bar.

To be fair we only went in for a beer. Dark & dingy this didn’t feel a very welcoming place. There wasn’t really any atmosphere amongst the people tucked away at their tiny Formica tables, signs made it clear we couldn’t choose where to sit, that if our whole party wasn’t there we couldn’t be seated at all & that it was cash only. Drinks were so so & I probably wouldn’t return. Maybe it’s different if you want seafood, but otherwise I wouldn’t bother as there was nothing really nice about the place.

Although the ambiance is hard to find, the crab is not! Felt like we were in hideaway bar during prohibition, in the basement, dark, cash only. But you won't regret the king crab legs!! They were huge (approx. 1 pound per serving) served with a garlic butter & thin fries.

This establishment that goes by the name of Half Shell is difficult to find. The restaurant is in a basement and is not very clean. Service is also disappointing. The food is significantly overpriced for being a cash-only business. It's not worth the price.

If we weren't coming with a local, we would have driven past this place without a second thought. A tiny set of stairs off the sidewalk takes you into a dark, crowded bar. Not the place you would expect for amazing crab legs. The crab legs are served over a bed of fries, non-descript bread and a lollipop. These had to have been the biggest, meatiest crab legs i have ever had- anywhere! If you go in with low expectations due to the decor, you will come out amazed and full!

Fantastic oysters and calamari. Cheap drinks and CASH only. Second time here and nothing has changed and hope nothing does. Snow crab and filet is great as well.

Every time I am in Chicago I make it a point to eat here. My daughter and I ordered the King Crab & Snow Crab special and a bowl each of their creamy Clam Chowder! There is so much crab and French fries on the plate we took some home and my daughter made Crab Alfredo with it! The house garlic butter sauce is delicious and we even dipped our French fries in it! Each meal comes with a hidden surprise (sucker) which are not just an average sucker! It's like a little dessert hidden under the mountain of food! It's a SMALL establishment but they run like a machine! Wait time even when it's packed isn't bad and WELL worth the wait! Seating at the bar as well as tables. Staff has been there a LONG time and makes you feel like family. One note - this restaurant is CASH ONLY! With a tip you'll spend $80 - $100 for two. Not a fancy restaurant and it's a little hard to find because it's underground! DO NOT pass up a chance to eat here! You'll be disappointed by other Crab meals after having theirs! AMAZING!

We did a quick Anniversary trip to Chicago in Nov. 2017 and ate at this recommend by friends restaurant. Absolutely Loved It! Very Small Mom & Pop atmosphere, family owned restaurant. Drinks were on point and the seafood was soooo Good! Hands down we love this place, owner was very friendly and very welcoming! We are travel agents and always looking for new places and this by all means a MUST restaurant if you love seafood.

For whatever reason, Half Shell doesn't get its props. Located at 676 West Diversey Parkway, at the northeast corner of Orchard and Diversey, in one half of the basement of a two-story brownstone, Half Shell is a no-frills, cash only neighborhood pub in Lincoln Park that has been dishing up a delicious seafood menu since 1968. You won't find it listed in any guidebooks or rated among the top 10 bars in Chicago. But they've been in business for nearly 50 years so they must be doing something right. Long-timers insist Half Shell is the best seafood pub in the city. It specializes in King crab legs, fried catfish and jumbo shrimp. I don't care for crab legs or catfish but the fried jumbo shrimp is irresistible. Half Shell also is a popular destination for its sidewalk cafe in the summer, its old-school waiters and bartenders, its cheap pitchers of beer and its basement atmosphere. Al Pacino, John Cusack, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Enrique Iglesias and any number of Chicago Cubs players have been known to frequent the pub. They may not be sitting at the bar when you arrive but the quality of the seafood won't change. For appetizers, try the shrimp or crab legs or clams or oysters or crab cakes or clam chowder or lobster bisque, even caviar or French fried squid or smoked sturgeon. If you're planning to watch the Cubs/Cardinals game on TV or argue about the Bears' recent draft picks, plan to order an entree...a half-pound steakburger or broiled jumbo shrimp and beef tenderloin or fried tilapia or Lake perch or fried catfish or King crab legs or red snapper or scallops or swordfish or salmon or fried shrimp or Snow crabs and beef tenderloin. You won't be disappointed. You'll just wonder why Half Shell isn't listed in all the Chicago guidebooks.

If there is one place that has great king crab legs and doesn't steal your wallet during the process, its Half Shell. I love this place when its warm out and you can score a table outdoors on the patio. The inside of the place looks like a dive, but it's well known locally to have some great food. I don't waste time looking for sides and misc. food on my visits here. Its all about one thing. King crab legs. One time I got the filet and crab leg combo, but I'll just stick with the crab legs from here on out. Nothing against the filet. The meat is tender, and tastes good, but anyone who knows this place loves the crab legs hands down. Get the legs, and get out.

Best Snow Crab...Anywhere!!

This really is a great hole-in-wall bar. Dining out in Chicago can be seriously expensive, but they manage to keep the costs down and the quality high. It is small and extremely noisy, you need to arrive early as they don't take reservations. The crab was beautifully fresh and plentiful and the crab cakes delish. Cash only I'm sure helps with costs and staffing and I can't wait to go back. My friend from Alaska concurs these are the best crab legs he's ever tasted.

I love the feel of this Chicago landmark. Located in the basement of a two-flat it is a no-frills eatery but the crab will make you forget all of that.

I learned of this place as a "Hidden Gem" from the Chicago-area exploration TV show "190 North". For a dear friend's birthday, we decided to check it out. The dining area is a narrow and recessed downstairs space that fills up fast and feels like a secret hideout that has amassed a cult following. The menu is simple but that suited me just fine, as I would discover that the Half Shell crew sticks to its guns to carefully prepare and proudly serve some of the best seafood around. The interior of the room has a transcending feel which combines a seaside eatery with a neighborhood pub that is also electrifying and eccentric. The atmosphere altogether is laid-back. The service was great and the food was greater. Seafood fans unite. This is one of the places that makes Chicago kick major tail on a bed of oyster shells.

We were looking for a place who served good frog legs. After a search, Half Shell came up. We gave it a try. This place is super casual. A handful of tables. Nothing fancy but that is okay. Seven people in our party and we all enjoyed our meal. The shrimp corn chowder was is excellent! The biggest warning is....this is a CASH only place.

Located in a basement with a bar as long as the restaurant itself. Food is excellent and reasonably priced. The Alaskan crab legs are plentiful and very tasty. A full order can be shared. Comes with fries which are very good. A terrific neighborhood restaurant. Also have tables street level.

It isn't fancy and they only take cash! Other than that it is amazing! 1/2 pound snow crab 1/2 pound king crab for 28 bucks! We go here everytime we visit Chicago

none of this weirdo hipster seafood in the bag crap. i want my crab legs on a plate thank-you very much. half shell delivers! i had the snow crab legs with the tenderloin medallions. wow. i got both sets of crab legs, really tender steak, and it comes with fries, bread, a pickle, and even a lollipop! also, they give u a self-serve squeeze bottle of garlic butter... we ate on the patio. we were visiting from Toronto, Canada and after reading all these 5 star reviews from weird tourist trap seafood 'boil' houses, we decided on Half Shell instead becuz it was 'a local favourite' and becuz a bunch of bad reviews said there was a grumpy old waitress that has been there forever, which made us want to check it out! haha. i mean, if it's still standing, and in Chicago, it MUST be good! so if yer lookin for a sleek modern tourist trap with all your food served in a plastic bag, don't come here, but if u want really good, affordable, local favourite, crab legs served on a plate, this is the place!!! it's so old, it's cash only. which adds even more to it's charm. now all that 'charm' wouldn't matter if the food wasn't exceptionally good and affordable so this place is a must (my crab legs and steak was only 34$, compared to insane prices from these hipster 'boil' houses that will charge you and arm, and a leg)

Appetizers, awesome. The food, outstanding. The atmosphere ok. It's in the basement of an old brown stone. Seating is limited. We've been going there for thirty years.

A friend ssid this was his favorite restaurant! Visiting Chicago for my birthday, it was right on our walking route to the zoo. Had to check it out. A little confused, we had to walk downstairs to get to it. Remember if you go, "gentlemen remove their hats"... My guess it's for the secuity cams as THEY ONLY ACCEPT CASH! Clam chowder: decadent! Yum! My partner says"best ever!" Steamed clams: (see pic)... Smokey, subtle broth, served with herbed, melted butter Mulligan fish stew: wow... The broth is exquisite! Carrots, potatoes, shell pasta and more (see pic) Frog legs: a big serving; very light batter; the sweet part of the hoseradish dipping sauce may have overwhelmed the picante of the hosersdish Bottom line: thanks Andy... You are right#

Back after 11 years and decor and menu is the same. Smelt and fries light with a crunch. Yellow sauce is sweet with a kick and cocktail sauce on fries is hot. Broiled shrimp and fried perch was enjoyed by friends. Jukebox.music playing, guests arriving aroun 7:00 happily waiting for a table. Great spot to end the day after a Cubs game. Bring cash.

I ain't one thats interested in wearing a suit to dinner. I don't care about who sees me at any given moment, and especially when I'm eating like an animal. I care about authentic experiences with great food, and normal people. If you're in town for just one night, skip all the downtown BS and make your way to Lincoln Park. This little divey bar is as good as it gets! It gets packed, so arrive early and hit up the ATM as its cash only. Just get the king crab leg meal and a pitcher of beer. All you need.

I really love their crabs and French fries because of them my fav appetizer are salty edemame. Love to go and get chamapigne and good crabs sitting outside and enjoy the weather

51 years in business and 27 years of us in the neighborhood but embarrassed to say this was the first visit but certainly not the last. Great fresh raw bar seafood and very reasonable prices, as are the drinks. My dirty martini was made by the owner and he ran a great room. Oysters and Shrimp were great and grilled Cherrystone Clams were good. Wish they had mignonette for the oysters but otherwise we wanted for nothing. Great local join with a rich history. New generation just took over but old school traditions like "gentlemen hats off" and cash only remain. Perfect for a meal or nosh before a movie at Landmark Century Theatres. We'll be back.

Visited in the depths of Chicago winter so no dining al fresco. Instead you descent down steep steps to a hot and steamy bar, crowded and noisy. There appeared to be at least 4 groups of post-game football supporters, the bar area was packed. All very atmospheric and completely non-threatening. Our fellow diners seemed to want to chat to the fancy foreigners (fancy, ha!, as if) and offer noisy advice on what to order. The service us Brits received was as attentive as a crowded restaurant could offer from the barmen who looked like they had just come off set from an American detective series. They needed to be chewing on fat cigars. We were pointed towards a table, which like all the others, was an old wooden dining table, gnarled and pitted but with a clean table mat for each of us. The food is simple and delicious (see the on-line menu) with average Chicago prices which are good until one adds on the 20% tip. Then they start to look on the pricey side but that is the same in all Chicago eateries. This is not a bar to ask for the wine list, beer is de rigour but that's okay because Chicago brews some of the world's best beers. Order by the jug for best prices of the chilled, fizzy brew. Definitely a place to visit and experience for the atmosphere as much as the excellent food.

The oysters were just okay.... but the Half Shell itself has a great ambiance. Its unusual to find A place where people are so friendly and make you feel so at home. The shrimp was great and the cider was ice cold. The owner rocks!!!

This place is great for a casual easy dinner. They serve perfectly for kids and adults. The cream here is very fresh and served simply so you can just enjoy it! A must get for me is the clam chowder!! The freshest seafood in Chicago!!!

Has some of the best fish dishes in Chicago. Rather disarming as it looks a dinghy place but forget all that - the food is truly exceptional.

We finally tried this place after hearing several recommendations from friends. A great little hideaway in Lincoln Park, with fantastic crab legs. I had the special: king crab and tenderloin for $21 which you can't beat in Chicago. Very large portion of crab legs, and they were so tasty. My fiance had the Dungeoness crab and it was huge! Go for the food, not the atmosphere. I'm glad we finally made time to tryi it, and will definitely go back. It is cash only, but there is an ATM machine inside.

This is a hidden gem on the north side of Chicago! I’ve been a fan for over 15 years....lost count of how many visits, but I can truly say that I have never been disappointed. The food is fresh and delicious! Family owned with impeccable service. Not plush and overstated....the oysters and king crab legs are to die for.

Number one reason to come to Chicago! Shrimp, frog legs, chowder and cherry stones this visit. Great environment, great service in a funky cool environment. You owe this to yourself@

This place is great for crab legs, just be prepared to wait a while for a table by a host who keeps the list by memory! Very reasonable and delicious!

Oh my, what a great place! We just ordered appetizers instead of entrees. Hub ordered New England chowder and I had the calamari. You can order King Crab by preference by either hot or cold. We chose hot. Chowder was very tasty with bite size potato chunks so that flavors complimented well. I like that the chef was specific about that because it showed forethought about the diner, not just the food. The soup had a consistency of a delightfully light broth, rather than an overly thick texture. Calamari was fresh cut, not frozen and came with 3 dipping sauces: marinara w/horse radish, melted butter with horse radish tang, and sour cream, this last, slightly mystifying to these East Coast residents. Portions were generous and we left the table satisfied, but not stuffed. Anthony, our waiter, was thoughtful, polite, and listened well. He indulged us by graciously taking our photo. He made our dining experience pleasant. This is my kind of eatery, an unpretentious vibe with great tasting food. You won’t be sorry you came. FYI: cash only.

We got out of downtown Chicago for a great seafood dinner at Half Shell -- took the Red Line up to the Diversey stop and walked a few blocks south to find Half Shell right across from Trader Joes on the corner, with a courtyard full of happy people enjoying a great summer Tuesday evening. We would have had to wait an hour for a patio table, so we ate inside. Ambiance was authentic neighborhood bar. We had the clam chowder (suspicously Progresso-like), and I had the king crab plate, and my husband had the king crab/snow crab combination. Crabs were excellent! Served on a bed of shoestring french fries we never got to. Couple of beers, two cups of clam chowder, and the two meals ended up to be about $96, which is probably a decent price for seafood in Chicago.

After not having been here in some 15+ years, I have now been back twice in the last 6 months. Each time the food had been reliably above average. People go for the crab legs and they were indeed the best entree that our group had. The service efficient, if not particularly friendly. The place is VERY informal--almost "slummin" and it is indeed CASH ONLY! Sitting outisde on a summer evening made for a perfect Chicago evening.

I hate to even give this place 1 star. Our experience was Terrible from beginning till end. Our drinks were messed up & the fries were cold. Then after all of that at the end of the night of eating we were abruptly told to pay the bill with cash only!! We didn't have cash on us so we had to search high and low for another way to pay. We finally found one. Is this true? Why were there no signs and why were we not told earlier that the restaurant is cash only?

Ate here based on reviews in TA--and so glad we did! Our family loves steamed crab legs, and I don't think we've ever had such huge servings of delicious crab before. The King Crab and the Snow Crab combo was $36, and the Snow Crab Plate was $32. Our plates were covered in claws! The plates also come with fries and bread (both bland and insignificant, in light of the stupendous crab legs). If you like steamed crab, you must visit. And take cash! That is all they accept--no cards of any kind.

The Half Shell is lovcated at Diversey and Orchard in Lakeview directly acroos the street from Pier One. They are located on the lower level of a Brownstone and they have been there since 1958. This place is all about seafood. They only have 48 seats but a 20 seat bar. No frills here, just great seafood. Cash Only, no checks, no credit or debit cards accpeted. A great place for a date or after a Cubs game. Ask the bar tender if they have smoked sturgeon. if so do NOT pass it up, it is AWESOME ! Aside from KING and SNow crab, they have fish platters, hot and cold shrimp, and fried chicken wings. I always have a dozen or two of fresh oysters, shucked fresh. They also have fresh clams. Both yummy. All in all a 10.

Visited this quaint restaurant which was established in 1969. Very small bar with local appeal. We had oysters on the half shell and the fried perch. All was good.

Do not judge this restaurant by the downmarket look as you enter. It certainly looks like a dive but the seafood is first rate. Highly recommended.

Walk down into the basement and you will find a true joint: crowded, dark, tippy tables and it all comes together when the food comes. We go as a family and get the crab dinner and some of the best fried shrimp I have had anywhere. Thin fries and interesting dips for the shrimp. No idea how they keep track of seating but they do. Don't dress up and don't expect a bistro. Just great seafood and oysters when in season. One of our favorite Chicago go to places.

If you're looking for romance and ambiance, this isn't your place. But if you want amazing snow crab for the best price anywhere, don't miss the Half Shell. We have been going here about once/year since about 1995 when a foody friend living in Chicago recommended it. Not once have we been disappointed. One time my snow crab legs were almost empty of meat and they replaced the order with a full new order. It is MUST for lovers of crab legs. We have taken our 3 kids there and now they ask to return.

We visited Chicago recently and met some family members who suggested we go to the Half Shell for crab. OK, we are from Florida so my first thought is “right I am going to go to a restaurant in land locked Chicago, whose closest water is a lake, for crab!” The we Uber up to it and now my mind is filled with memories of my mother telling me never to go into places that look like this. It is downstairs, it has huge signs saying CASH ONLY and the bar is packed with people who are obviously regulars – what have I done? Well, what I did apparently was walk into one of the hidden gems, and perhaps the best crab I have had bar none anywhere. Yes it is a little “rustic” and the fellow at the bar looks like he might have thrown people like me out of his bar, but he is friendly and remembers everyone who comes in and where they are in the seating queue. He also pours pitchers of Blue Moon beer that are very reasonable priced, perfectly cooled and delicious. After a bit of a wait (there are probably not more than 10-15 tables) it is our turn. There is lots of seafood, and the occasional meat, on the menu but I am reminded that I came here for crab. We split a shrimp cocktail among 4 to start, and these are the shrimp of the famous “Jumbo Shrimp” oxymoron, looking more like prawns than shrimp. If we would have had two servings we probably could have stopped there. Then the star arrives, two full King Crab legs cut into four and laying atop a bed of French Fries. The fries are rather plebian but for all that mattered they could have been on a bed of gravel because once you start on the crab you realize you will have no room for anything else. The crab was sweet, firm and perfectly prepared. It came with garlic butter but in truth were so good naked that much of the butter was left at the end. We ended up taking crab home because there was just too much to consume without actually having to walk side-ways and click when you left! So, don’t let you mother see you going in, but go in by all means! Oh, and take cash, or an debit card (ATM conveniently placed at the front of the bar) because they mean CASH ONLY!

Yup, this is a dive bar. Yup, they have great seafood. Yup, you should try it if you're in Chicago.

I have been coming here for about 27 years. This little casual "joint" is consistently amazing! It has colored lights up you're around the freshest seafood you can buy at alarmingly reasonable prices. The shrimp is colossal as are the crab legs and perfectly fresh, The menu is a huge assortment of very inexpensively priced very very high quality seafood. Dress in your jeans and go to enjoy the stupendous food. The help has all been there for years. Go early, go late or be prepared to wait for a table or a seat at the bar. No matter how crowded somehow the food always comes to the table very quickly. Everyone I have ever taken there loves it and goes back. Be hungry! The servings are large. The BEST!!!!
The reason to come to Chicago
Trip to the Wind City is not complete without an experience at the half-shell. Open fire cherry stone clams, seafood soup to die for ("Mulligan Stew"), frog legs, clam chowder and shrimp!!!! Unique ambience. Men: take your hats off on entering. Area is developing rapidly... has been here over 50 years. Strongly recommend you give it a try!
