Quick Service, Delicious Dan Dan Signature Noodle

By Roosevelt N |

Me and a few friends took a visit here a couple times now. We order a few Dan-Dan noodle portions and they came insanely quick! Their bok choi with mushroom so fresh and vegan-friendly. Don't be shy to try their duck dishes as well! They're really decent! Pricing wasn't too bad at all. The only con of the place was the lighting is a little too dimmed.

delicious food, interesting building

By Sharon B |

It's clear that this was once a bank with its high ceilings and spacious, airiness. Very cool space. I can't remember everything we ordered but I'd say that half the dishes were excellent and half were either difficult to eat or not as advertised. The spicy garlic eggplant was really delicious. The duck was tasty but because the cook chopped up the bones together with the meat, eating it involved picking out many little bones from each bite. Not much fun. The sizzling rice dish was anything but sizzling. A huge, soggy, disappointing mess. We had no trouble with the spiciness of the food. If I go back, I'd order more carefully and ask questions about the dishes.

Better choices in Chinatown.....

By James |

We ordered delivery while staying at the Hilton on Penn’s Landing. The fried rice lacked flavor and the Kung Pao chicken was average at best. Nowhere near the meal we had in Chinatown. I give it 3 Fortune Cookies out of 5.

Great food & good portions!!

By DZbites |

We ordered 5 dishes including appetizers and all were flavorful. We had dan dan noodles with peanut sauce, chicken with garlic sauce and tofu with black pepper sauce and they were all quite spicy and flavorful

great atmosphere.

By rz1519 |

right smack in the middle of old city, the decor is cool and historic and there is full bar. the food is typically shared dishes. i liked the pork fried rice, beef lo mein, and chicken dumplings we ordered but a little too greasy for my taste. they automatically added a 20% tip, we had a party of 8. compared to other places, i would say the food is average chinese food.

Asian fine dining

By Berkesq |

Excellent, attentive service and excellent, attentive chef creates tangy and tasty authentic Chinese cuisine in a beautiful restaurant. Always consistent service and cuisine. One of the best Chinese restaurants in Philly in a great location.

Delicious and spicy!

By redrose503 |

We ordered takeout from Han Dynasty last week and we loved it! We ordered the Dan Dan noodles and the Wonton soup. Both were spicy (have you ever had spicy wonton soup? fantastic!) and delicious, full of flavor. You can adjust the spice level of your food which is nice - I asked for the noodles mild and it was still full of heat, but just the right amount. There are a few nights each week that they seem to be doing takeout only, but they had a streamlined process and we didn't have to wait once we got to the restaurant. The food was priced well and tasted great - definitely check this out if you're wanting some Chinese in Old City.

Order Szechuan and you will love this place!!!

By audiemurphy1 |

Best Szechuan food in all of Philadelphia! I especially loved the Szechuan French Fries (See photo). The food was very good and the service was excellent. You are able to choose how spicy you want your food on a scale of 1-10 and they can make the food SPICY so be accurate in your ordering! The atmosphere is very fun. I believe the building used to be an old bank. Very tall ceilings. Because of that it can get very loud. Full bar with TV's as well. I highly recommend this restaurant for a fun casual dinning experience.

SPICY ;)

By EA913 |

Really good food set in an old converted bank. Everything is spiced with szechuan peppers so its a nice lingering heat. They won't alter the spice levels on dishes like some of their other locations. Get the Spicy Cucumber appetizer to warm up your palate. Chicken wings are spot on. Crispy and spicy. Dan Dan noodles are also pretty classic here. Worth checking out.

A solid go to, been there 15+ times and a wonderful meal almost every time

By RichC250 |

We are hooked on the dan dan noodles, and have turned many folks onto them. Choose you own spice level on every dish and don't be afraid to be daring. Large portions, very good ingredients, fresh to order cooking, reasonable prices. Decor is interesting, with a bar and screens for games and news.

Wonderful!

Close to our hotel. Staff especially Nick went out of his way to accommodate someone with food allergies. Food was great. Will come back if we visit Philadelphia again.

excellent and authentic chinese restaurant

delicious sischuanese food. despite iss popularity, the food is consistently delicious. Do not miss the dan dan noodles

My mouth exploded with flavor

By GerryBaron06 |

I hate bland food, especially bland Chinese food. Last night I experienced one of the best Chinese meals I've ever had. Every single bite of every plate was full of flavor. Sometimes a dish starts with flavor and the flavor dies out as you keep chewing. That was not the case with anything I tasted yesterday. I tasted Dan Dan noodles for the first time. I am not a big fan of eating noodles at Chinese restaurants because I favor rice. I could not believe how tasty these noodles were. I tasted Dry Fry Chicken for the first time. It was also amazing. My wife had the Double Cooked Chicken. Another winner! The combination of leeks, hot peppers and chicken was delightful. I tried the Tea Smoked Duck in Beer Sauce at level 6 heat. The duck is cut up in pieces with the bone. If you want to eat the meat without any work, this might not be the dish for you. I like it but didn't find it to be as rich in flavor as the Dry Fry Chicken. I am already scheming on how to visit the Han Dynasty location that is closer to me, and I am certain I will find my way back to this location.

The Real Deal

By Jeff138 |

Great place. Noodles were probably the best noodles I've had in a long, long time and I eat Noodles all the time - in Chinatown all the time. Great service during lunch. Cool building.

First time...NOT the last!

By Emily G |

Heard so much...had to try it! Was not dissapointed. Dan Dan noodles for starter, Garlic chicken at a #5 and Salt and Pepper chicken at a #6. Had enough for dinner the next night! Went during happy hour 5-7 so cocktails were $5! Was as good as expected...

Excellent food!

By AndersUA |

Great Szechuan cuisine and fantastic service. Oysters sauce beef is mind blowing, highly recommended! Must visit!

Quality, quantity, ... and Spicy!

By OftenTraveling1066 |

Our lunch for three had elegant dishes with more than enough food. We seldom take stuff home, but this time we did --- and it gave use a second fine mean. The spicy Dan Dan noodles are the house specialty; get them. After that, the world is your oyster. For three people, each having a beer and a great meal, we had a great time for $98 and tip.

Pleasant Surprise

By SoCa1l26 |

We ate here on a business trip for a relatively early dinner. The place was not crowded when we arrived around 515pm, but was packed by the time we left. We were seated promptly. The waiter was very attentive during the entire ordering, serving, and payment process. Our waters were refilled without asking. I had the kung pao chicken and my companion had some sort of dumplings. Both of us were pleased with the food. The Kung Pao chicken was extremely fresh and was served very rapidly after ordering. Really tasty sauce and fresh ingredients, with bamboo shoots and fresh-cut celery gave it a delicious crunch. There were occasional bursts of fresh ginger while consuming. Extremely delicious.

Great Food, Weird Seating Issues

By Tantalum |

I have eaten here twice in the past month, both times as a walk in customer. The first time as a twosome, the second time as a group of five. While the restaurant had several empty tables both times, we were directed to sit at the bar both times. The second time, as I was told that the lack of a reservation was an issue, a quick glance turned up mostly empty tables, with a less than 20% occupied. I asked if we could have a table instead of sitting at the bar, and was told that it would be 45 minutes until a table was available. In an almost empty restaurant...... We sat at the bar and had a solid meal, very interesting food, and a good waiter. The hostess and the issue with seating just left me cold. I guess I would recommend for the food, and with the caveat you make a reservation.

Salt and Peper Shrimp the best :)

By MaryAnne W |

We love eating here. The twice cooked fish is wonderful. Love the Noodles and the Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Be careful, most things are very hot. I never order higher than a 4 on scale of 10/

The best Chinese food bar none

The only place I go now, but to their cherry hill, n.j. Branch. The best Chinese food I ever had. Dan Dan noodles, their garlic sauce with shrimp, crispy rice chicken and Kung pot anything are great. My daughter the vegetarian loves it too

Old Fashioned Chinese Restaurant

By MVMA25 |

Excellent se;ecvtion of Chinese flood; not the usual of other restaurants. General spicy underrpinnings. Reasonably quit environment. Excellent service. Ask for a fork and spoon if you are not comfortable with the chop sticks. Quite inexpensive for lots of food; more than one can eat. In an interesting old building in an historic area.

Great experience!

By ST eats |

I was originally drawn after seeing Han Chiang with Anthony Bourdain talking about not wanting to "dumb down" his authentic cuisine -- he definitely didn't! The location looks great, after driving past museums and historic settings, it seems to fit the environment, but also stay modern at the same time. The menu seems to be built for multiple guests, which is what I would recommend. I dined alone and found that I wanted to try a number of things but didn't want anything going to waste as I was heading to an event immediately after dinner. The place was fairly busy on a Friday night, I got a seat at the bar and was quickly served a drink and a glass of water (I was told I'd probably need a refill). The menu looks great, but I decided to go with the Dan Dan Noodles that the place seems to be known for, I believe a 6 or 7 on the heat scale, with minced pork. Portion size was definitely for more than one person, but I powered through the piping hot noodles. I like to think I can handle spice, so I'd probably put these around a 4 or 5, but having a spoon of the sauce definitely helped. Was able to get in an out without any issues with quality in under an hour -- can't imagine it's always that quick, but solo dining allows for that sometimes. Delicious food, knowledgable staff and a great environment make for an awesome spot to visit in Philly.

Excellent food, service, and atmosphere!

By hibbingnative |

Taken there by our son while visiting Philadelphia. By far the best food and service of our trip! Our server was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. The food was there quickly and nice and hot. We ordered four separate main dishes and two appetizers for six of us and we took food home. The food could be as tame or hot as you wish. Very flavorful. I would recommend going here to anyone in Philly.

Very good food in a very cool building

By LadyDukes11 |

In an old bank building, this place has a nice, large bar with tv screens and the crowd is lively on the weekends. The dining room is decorated nicely and the food is really, really good. It comes family style, and when it's ready, it comes out. I suggest ordering a few things and just going with the flow. I also suggest reservations, as otherwise we would have had to wait quite a bit on a Saturday night. The portions are generous as well.

Nice and Spicy

By travelmugsy |

Had a great dinner at Han Dynasty in downtown Philly. Needed a reservation and place was busy when we arrived. Started with the spicy cucumbers and Dan Dan noodles both were amazing. Spicy and full of flavor. Also got an order of spring rolls. For the main course we split the Dry Fried Beef and the garlic sauce chicken. It was plenty of food to share with 4 and had a good spice to it. Fun cocktails and friendly service. Definitely recommend this authentic spot.

SPICY!

By mikea168 |

If you like spicy food Han Dynasty is your place. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and great food. Just be conscious of the heat level when ordering.

Great location Great selections

By ChocolateCzar |

We were taken out for dinner by my adult children celebrating our anniversary. They did not tell us where we were going and since this section of town has more restaurants than you can count on your fingers and toes, we did not know where we would end up until we walked through the doors. We parked in a lot, I do not believe they have valet but I am not positive – ask when you make reservations. The hostess greeted us as if we were old friends and the waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. The dining area is divided into two sections, but neither is better than the other. The place is very large and beautifully appointed. We had reservations but the place was not . . .packed although as the evening progressed more and more people popped in. But the place is huge and they were able to accommodate the patronage. It was difficult to make a final selection as everything looks wonderful, but eventually we did. Kim chose the spicy Crispy Cucumbers and I the Chicken in Chili Oil for appetizers Then for entrees she went with the Chicken Dry Pot Style and I the Ginger Shredded Duck She loved her but I was less than thrilled with the duck although it was very nice. Maybe I am getting tired of dealing with duck bones. CAVIOT, be sure to tell the waiter what level ( 1-10) you want your dish spiced. Once you break past the 5 mark, it can become . . . well, to coin a phrase, SPICY. No dessert for us tonight, we had cake waiting at home.

Misleading Menu + Fair Service

By HonestPhilReviewer |

This is my 2nd visit. I remember enjoying the food & service the 1st time. This time the air conditioning was at best functioning poorly. We started off with Dan Dan noodles that on the menu had a 'heat' rating of 6 on a scale of 1-10. After my 1st bite I needed to call the Fire Dept. I mentioned this to our waiter & he replied that the 'heat' rating is incorrect; as it should be a "9." The test was great but I couldn't handle the 'heat.' Next we ate our shrimp dish with garlic sauce. It was rated a 6. The taste was very good. Our last dish was chicken rated a 3. It was on the bland side. Service was friendly but inattentive. We won't return until at least Sept. when the weather temp. cools off.

Delicious food, beautiful setting!

By Cindy C |

Wow, after touring the new Museum of the American Revolution (highly recommended) we walked to Han Dynasty for a fantastic dinner! Others in my party selected 3 appetizers and 3 dinners for 5 people. The amount of food and quality was excellent. This was real Chinese food, not Americanized. Inside, it is beautiful. Was it an Old City bank at one time? Really stately with high ceilings plus it was decorated for Christmas which gave it an extra magical touch. Enjoy!!

Yummy

By Martina C |

Great location with very good food. Particular dishes, try a little bit of everything but don’t miss the noodles (while cucumber salad is overrated)!

Good but not authentic if that's what you are looking for.

By amy |

I found this one after searching best Chinese food, and this one was one of it that gained many reviews, etc. it's in the old town, nice. Place is also nicely done, way too dark though maybe it's not a sunny day but so dark that I almost could not read menu. Menu looks authentic Chinese Sichuan food, and it's nice that even marked 1-10 to indicate the level of spicy. We ordered appetizer, old style Sichuan dish and new style. To make long story short, I'm not very disappointed but not impressed at all. It's not authentic Chinese if that's what you are looking for. It's kind of like chin chin in LA.

Weird inside. Some good choices food wise.

By Susan D |

Some people may like the interior. It was just incongruent to me - not because it didn't seem like a "normal" Chinese restaurant but just because it felt like a theater and idk - basically weird and huge. They first seated us at a dark table in the back. It was 6pm and sunny outside. They moved us to a booth at the front - all the seats were ripped up. The dan dan noodles were very good but very spicy with spice rating of 6. I like spicy food. The food came out very fast which was a plus. The chicken dumpling soup was excellent. Shrimp with garlic sauce also good. We asked for less spicy on a beef dish (which was an 8) and it came out bland - so be careful what you ask for. Service was good.

Good Chinese Food in Philly

By Pranaballav |

Very good Ambience , have the option of sitting outside . Quantity of each dish is more than sufficient for two persons . Extra rice is provided at No extra charge , which one does not know when visiting for the first time .

Hot and delicious

By Lsbtravel1 |

This is one of four restaurants with the same name in various parts of the City. They are all attractive with very authentic spicy cuisine. The servers are well informed and will modify the heat of your order if you wish. There are also non spicy items on the menu if some of your party isn't so adventurous

A different Chinese place

By pamjay2015 |

Visiting PA with my brother and friend, and after seeing this place on TV we wanted to give it a try. Made a reservation which we are glad we did. This place was busy. The atmosphere is amazing. Historic building and very well appointed. We were told that everything is served family style. What that meant was that the food comes out when it comes out. The 3 of use shared 3 apps. Spicy Crispy Cucumbers, Fired Chicken Dumpling and Dan Dan Noodles. All of these were top-nothch. Dan Dan Noodles were not a spicy we were lead to believe but it might be that I am used to having spicy food. We shared 2 entrees. The Honey Walnut Shrimp and the Dry Chicken. We waited more than 30 minutes for that food to come out. We were not in a rich, but it did take a long long time. Anyway, the Dry chicken had more of a BBQ Flavor. The Honey Walnut Shrimp was tasty, More on the sweet side. Overall the main dishes were good because they were different and something that would not normally be at any other Chinese place. So they were good but not great. Even with that, I would go back again as I loved the place and also because it was not the typical place to eat Chinese food.

Really Good

By Jefty2013 |

I had the soft shell crab and it was delicious. You control the spice heat and there are a variety of choices. My sister ate a vegetarian dish and said it was to die for. Reasonable prices and great food.

Great Restaurant: Clumsy w/Chopstix

By HonestPhilReviewer |

This place was suggested by my dinner date. It exceeded my elevated expectations. We ordered & deeply enjoyed all of our dishes: a shared appetizer of Dan Dan Noodles, and two entrees that we also shared: Kung Pao Chicken & Garlic Shrimp. We requested that the spiceiness of our dishes be dialed back. Each dish had its own unique flavor that danced deliciously on our pallete. Service was impeccable. I can't wait to return for another delectable experience which hopefully time & stomachs permitting will include dessert.

pretty bad beef noodle soup

By Tony C |

My review is based on the limited food selection I ordered. This will be primarily about its spicy beef noodle soup. Based on reviews and word of mouth this serves authentic and awesome Sichuan Chinese food. Ppl recommend dan dan noodle and other dishes. I personally don't like Dandan so I ordered my favorite noodle soup, beef noodle. The spicy beef noodle soup here is horrible, it's broth is bland and without flavoring besides the hot spicy oil. It literally only has hard chewy tough beef, noodles, some cilantro, broth which is just spicy oil and bamboo shoots. It is among one of the worst beef noodle soup I ever had. I imagine a well known Sichuan restaurant can make a decent bowl but even local suburb Chinese restaurant serves better soup than here. Or at least cook your beef long enough so it melts in your mouth vs serving tough chewy beef. It was my wife my 5 year old and myself. We ordered Scallion pancake, two spicy beef noodle soup, wonton in chilly oil and stir fry scallion beef. We finished everything except for my wife's beef noodle soup which we left untouched. I'm a pig so even if it's bland I finished mine. Service was great, the staffs were helpful. But do NOT get spicy beef noodle soup here.

Dinner with friends and family

By Bullies3 |

My wife and I recently met our daughter and some friends for dinner at Han Dynasty in old city. We had a reservation and were seated promptly by a friendly hostess. Service was fast and spot on. The server answered our questions prior to ordering and maintained a presence throughout our meal - filling our water glasses frequently as some of the dishes are spicy hot! The restaurant is in an old bank building. Great scenery although a little loud due to the large open space. Overall a great experience and we'll be back.

After poetry reading

By Safetyguy_328 |

First time here, group of 12. Place is big clean and bright. Terrific wait staff. Make a good Manhattan. Portion sizes are huge, Family style. Many dishes have oyster sauce and 6 levels of spiciness. I got a small order of sweet sausage and they were good. Shared some excellent wanton soup. Nice place and convenient to reading venue.

Excelent

By Sebastián G |

Excelent food and service! It was an awesome experience, be careful with what you order there is a lot of spicy food, but your waiter will let you know beforehand!

Great flavor and textures, good service, spice levels for all palates...many proteins to choose from, vegetarian too.

By RichC250 |

Great location in Old City, full bar, high ceilings, informative servers, abundant portions. Sit at the bar or bar area, or in the full spacious dining room. Our server knew the foods and dishes and made many recommendations. The attention to service was good, with several people stopping by to see if we needed anything else or to clear.

Great food

By Dave_Webb |

We ate here twice during a stay in Philly and thoroughly enjoyed the food. We had things that we wouldn't normally eat, on the first night we managed to finish it but we got more adventurous on the second night and had to box some of it to go. The staff and service were excellent and they explained that as it was Szechuan style, the food could arrive at different times. It did but this didn't affect our enjoyment.

Delicious

By SaadSeeb |

Interior was spacious and nice. Service very good, the waiter first explained to us what the cuisine was all about. The food delicious and all items that we tried were equally good. Will definitely try again.

Ok

By maalvika |

I used to love this place but I think the quality of food n service have gone down. It's time to find new restaurants.the service was okie. Food was cold and the taste was not so great. Service was soo quick that you couldn't enjoy the ambiance too. Dan Dan noodles was very okay n kungpao chicken was terrible. The fish was sooooo bland and our server said its spicy as spicy can be.

Best Chinese

By Jackherzog |

We go here weekly for excellent dishes. Large portions make sharing possible. Scallops in hot oil is my favorite entree. You can lighten up the heat of the dishes upon request. Great bar, great building, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. You will be happy.

Welcome relief

By Geordiegirl_8 |

We were tired, hungry and hadn't booked so we were delighted to be shown to a table within a minute of turning up on a busy Friday night. Large and good decor. Iced water, Chinese tea and chopsticks offered straight away. We shared very good chicken dumplings, but spring rolls were just okay. Then we had a huge chicken Kung pao dish which was suitably spiced, also some fried rice. I got some plain noodles as requested. The food is spiced on a 0-10 scale which is helpful and avoids nasty surprises. Reasonably authentic and the best Chinese food I have tasted for a while as it can be insipid in the UK Very attentive server called Sarah.

Best Szechuan in Philly and possibly than San Fran

By Bond Calloway |

I have Szechuan at the Beijing Szechuan govt house restaurant -this place gets all of its chefs from Szechuan province so it is likely the most authentic you are going to get here in the states. Top notch

A must destination!

By Squidly413 |

Han Dynasty is a must go-to restaurant. The building itself is incredible. Beautiful interior. Went for lunch. Had the Eggplant w/ Garlic Sauce & the Black Bean Fish. Both were excellent & bursting with flavors. Highly recommend!

Love it

By Shannon S |

Been to Dan Dan first. Then tried Han and wasn't disappointed. My kids love the chicken lo mein and I love the spicy cucumber appetizer. Dan dan noodles are delish. Some dishes are spicy but they can adjust it for you. Got a glass of the house red and it was very good. The atmosphere is really cool as well.

Good Food, Choose Carefully

By jennygirl57 |

Husband and I stopped in for dinner on a Monday night. As it was early, and a weekday, not crowded. We were seated at a tiny table, which surprised me, as most Asian food is shared, adequate space is needed on table. Happy Hour is 5-7, with drink specials and apps, but my husband requested a top shelf drink. He got the well drink, amd was only charged the Happy Hour price, but still, if a customer requests and is willing to pay for a higher priced drink, why substitute for the cheaper? Also, no lemon twist. When asked for a twist, he was given slices of lemon. So, bar staff needs some training. Sara was our server, friendly and efficient. We were asked about allergies, restrictions, etc. We ordered dumplings in chili oil (great), scallion pancake (just okay), dan dan noodle, (okay, nice heat at the finish, but sauce lacked something), and chicken in garlic sauce, which was very good. It is nice that you can request a spice level. It could be an issue for those who have problems with spice and heat, but food is not overwhelming. I would prefer more heat. As predicted, the table soon became too crowded, and Sara pushed the adjoining table next to ours to give us more space. Not sure what happens when the place is packed. Building is interesting, a former bank, so it has an interesting vibe. We will return, items on menu intrigued us.

Very tasty noodle dishes , particularly the cumin chicken. Service was good and the restaurant was very attractive inside.

Our best meal in Philly!

By Thelmadee |

First of all our server (Robert) seemed personally invested that we enjoyed each dish we ordered. Second of all, Robert allowed us to order dishes with less or no heat so that we weren't limited to just certain menu items. Does anyone else care enough about their patrons to do that? Everything we ordered was done to perfection with the biggest hit for our ten year old being the green bean dish! I've never seen a kid go so crazy over green beans!

Good food in a nice ambience

By Amit |

The food was good and served well. There was some problem with the food that we ordered and they were caring enough to understand our request and provide a replacement.

Yummy!

By maltman19 |

Food was so good and the atmosphere was great! Shrimp with walnuts, chicken fried dumplings, all delicious! Service was attentive.

Tasting menu

By onconc |

Family of 10 had dinner at Han Dynasty in Old City. The new building has a nice atmosphere. Energetic but not too noisy. Very international clientele. We requested the tasting menu for 8 and ordered two ala carte dishes for the kids. The tasting menu comes in three tiers priced 20$/25$ or 30$ pp. we chose the mid level which gave us some nice dishes and house specialties. We blended the level of spice from 3-8. We are very good eaters and couldn't finish the twenty dishes. The service was warm and friendly and service was excellent on a Saturday night. Would highly recommend the salt and pepper shrimp, pork belly, Dan Dan noodle, egg plant. Overall a great meal.

Very nice interior, average meals

By GerardV754 |

The building is impressive. Great interior. A must see. The menu is categorized with less spicy, medium an hot meals. We chose the medium kung pao which was still pretty spicy. The plastic chop sticks are not usable. Just ask for wooden chop sticks instead. Really do not understand that they put the red plastic ones on the tables. The food is ok. There is bottomless rice served but one bowl for 2 was sufficiënt for us. Costs were approx 55 dollar for main course with drinks for 2. Not expensive for a city center restaurant.

Best Chinese

By Marc_and_Kim_Z |

Wow! Really enjoyed the food and the vibe. Ordered and food came out quick. The heat ratings are legit!! I’d recommend a 10 if you can handle it because it’s a true 10! Great service by Nina, thank you. Ps… even had Rocky playing on the tele. Only in Philly 🤣🤣🤣

Amazing food!

By Acasey87 |

We decided we wanted some chinese food while on vacation, so we found Han Dynasty by chance actually. We were walking down Chesnut and found it, and we are so glad we did! The food is just amazing and the service was fantastic. We went during lunch. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and the misses ordered the Garlic Sauce Chicken. The portion size was great and each dish had the right amount of heat. They have different levels of heat (1-10) with 10 being the hottest. I'm not a big fan of huge heat, so the 3 was perfect. Stop in and look at this beautiful restaurant and enjoy some amazing food!

I love them Szechuan peppercorns

By ALChemProf |

Went there for lunch, very reasonable prices and selection. Beer was good. We both ordered spicy (fish in chili oil, dry fried chicken with peppercorns). Very interesting - sweating but not feeling the burn very much. Service was very good, the building was beautiful.

Fantastic

By folarin a |

Fantastic ! Best Chinese restaurant I have been to ! Lo mein and won ton soup is a must have ! The three pot chicken is wonderful. Everything I ate was cooked right with the right amount of spice. Nothing was dry. If you are in the area you must visit.

they must pay the back of house nothing

By Connector14893056955 |

The most poorly run restaurant in Old City, such a shame, they must pay the back of house nothing, their performance is abysmal.

Disappointed

By geronemotion |

Arriving late, 9.45pm, I was looking for something to eat. The Dan Dan Noodles were real popular they said. I have been around the world a bit and love noodles. The place looks nice, waiter was friendly. But these noodles were really not good. Overcooked and with terrible artificial seasoning. A bit spicy, that is fine. But to offer such a bad plate/ bowl of noodles should be a big shame for the place. I suggest to give the cook and all staff such a bowl and ask their honest opinion. Dreadful. The beer was good. No compensation on the noodles although I mentioned the disappointment ( and ate 3 spoons only).

Food tastes great with reasonable price

By Sean W |

Had lunch there. The food is very good. We had eggplant in garlic source, dry fried pork and dan dan noodle. I like the dry fried pork most. The other two were also very tasty. We also asked for hot oil, which is very good. The service is great. They provided free hot tea. I will go there again for sure.

Flavor city!

By PiperDoon |

Pungent flavors abound here, with fast prep and service. Loved everything we tried. Be prepared for some spice and head-sweats if you accidentally eat a red pepper. Great location in Manayunk. Maybe a bit overpriced for what it is. Can be very loud when full, which you migh well like.

Basic, tasty Chinese food in a beautiful old building.

By Evelyn B |

This was a spur of the moment decision at the end of a long day of sightseeing and it was a good place to relax and enjoy a meal. Food was flavorful, service was attentive. Prices were reasonable. Note: the restaurant was in the process of moving to a new location across the street.

Unique take on Chinese Cuisine

By Kesh |

We had a great time at Han Dynasty. The wait was very minimal and the ambience was fantastic. I would highly recommend the pork dumplings in chili oil and the dan dan noodles are a classic.

How did I miss this gem?

By Cazzie49 |

We recently visited Han Dynasty on Chestnut Street in Olde City at the suggestion of the cashier at a near by movie theater. What a find. First, the setting and decor and fabulous. It's an old bank with 20 foot ceilings, ornate columns and beautiful decorations. The bar is very long and inviting. Just a beautiful setting. Second, the food is unlike any other Chinese food that I have experienced. The entire menu is Szechuan and incorporates pickled soups with fish, wonderful savory spicy cucumber, the most delicate wontons in a delicious chicken broth. Vegetable dumplings were fried perfectly and were amongst the most savory I have ever had. There is a vast of array of entrees of which I was not familiar. Which brings me to the third item: the service. Our server, Yumi, was wonderful. As it was our first visit she reviewed all the different types of dishes, how they were spiced, and made suggestions on what to try. We settled on sharing a Garlic Shrimp which was served in a pungent vinegary sweet and sour sauce, with sautéed onions, bell peppers done just right and delicious black mushrooms. Out of this world. I can't wait to go back and try many more of the dishes. Service is family style and dishes appear in the order they are prepared. Don't miss this restaurant and ask for Yumi! You won't be disappointed.

Always busy but needs better front desk

By Sunita N |

We love Han Dynasty so we walked in about 6:30pm. We are a party of 5 so expect to wait but instead of “ we have a wait” we heard “ we will TRY to accommodate “ as if we were a burden. Not to their usual standards. Our waiter was great and food as usual was good

Not Your Typical Americanized Chinese Food

By Andy K |

I'd heard that this was the place to go for authentic Chinese food, I'd heard correctly. My go to dish is the hot sauce style with chicken, always outstanding. Never had anything here that wasn't spot on!

Delicious food

By 78shelly |

Food was absolutely Delicious! We ordered several apps and a couple entrees so we can share everything. My issue was with our reservation. The hostess called me a few hours before to confirm everything and what table would work best for our table of 5 with a wheelchair. She said everything was all set. We arrived 15 minutes early, but was told they gave our table away. So we waited while they tried to figure out what to do. At one point they asked if all 5 of us wanted to squeeze into a 4 top, nope. After about 30 mins waiting we suggested putting the 4 top with a 2 top, even though they were different heights. It would have been at least an hour for our original table. The manager and hostess both apologized, but neither checked on us once we got seated nor offered to make up for their mistake. Free drinks or apps would have made up for it.

Delicious but can be very spicy

By kmw2114 |

This food is great and the expanded location is awesome because there are plenty of tables and hardly ever a wait. Be careful: foods that are even labeled as 4 / 10 in terms of spice are quite spicy...if you keep things at a 1-3, you can actually taste the food. For my unrefined taste buds, the 7 / 10 spice level caused me a lot of pain and even numbness...I couldn't enjoy the rest of my meal!

Total disappointment at a favorite restaurant

By philgiusto |

Planned on celebrating two birthdays this pass weekend at Han Dynasty on Saturday! Everyone was excited since this restaurant and its associated locations are our families favorites!! Booked a 3:30 reservation for 9! Arrived at 3:34 and the restaurant was basically empty. Hostess proceeded to seat us. My daughter spoke with the manager and exchanged our history with the restaurant group! The drink and food order was placed! After that all went downhill fast! My son in law was standing at the bar and ordered a few beers for the table since our waiter disappeared! Somehow the beers were picked and placed on table and he waited 10 minutes before he found out! The Dan Dan noodles had no flavor or spice even though we asked! It was not edible! A second dish came out and we were told it was spicy and it was not. The braised beef soup was also flavorless and no spice which again surprised us! The dumplings in chili sauce was so bland we did not eat it! The manager was apologetic but did nothing to resolve except to tell us change of shift and problems with staff! The floor had broken and loose tiles at out table and the bathrooms were filthy! We gave up snd and told the manager we were leaving since everyone was frustrated and upset! The manager told us he was sorry and we needed to pay for the tasteless appetizers $60! My daughter and wife was so upset and stood outside and kept asking what happened!! We could not find a restaurant nearby for 9 without waiting for a long time and all gave up and went home! Are they going out of business?

A bit frayed around the edges...

By clarasdad |

Lunch with friends yesterday... Dumplings were good, but not hot, oddly enough. Mains were very, very good! Service OK too. But... the place really needs a good deep cleaning and some TLC. If its visibly dirty in the front, I don’t want to think much about the back. The banquettes are worn and ripped, adding to the ‘somebody needs to pay attention’ feeling. Sorry... the place deserves better attention.

Delicious Food

By Ramadama |

Everything we ordered was delicious. The cucumber salad is delicious, along with the wonderful sizzling chicken, sizzling tofu, string beans and noodles. Great service.

Great food

By mg0268 |

When we entered Han Dynasty, we were greeted by friendly staff. The interior of the restaurant was very spacious and lively. The waitress was very kind and gave us the layout of the menu. We ordered the garlic chicken and the cumin chicken. The food here was equally as good at typical Sichuan restaurants found in areas such as NY Chinatown or Flushing in NYC.

The Dan Dan Noodles are #1

By Chris S |

Every single time I'm here, I get the Dan Dan noodles. For the next 15 minutes I'm in food heaven. The place is huge and is great for watching sports. It's never super crowded which is nice. Everything on the menu it great, include the beer selection. Haven't had a bad meal once and the service is always good. It's a old city favorite of ours.

Excellent Dinner

By Steve W |

We were looking for an oriental dinner and checked the posted menu. The array of dishes was intriguing so we decided to stop in. Han Dynasty did not disappoint us. The food was tasty and well prepared. Our server was attentive. The bar selection was extensive. The building, the former Corn Exchange Bank, made for great atmosphere.

Really chinese food

By Luca Miragoli |

Chinese food really good , in a old style place in the center of the old city in Philadelphia . Kung pao chicken really good , Just a little spicy.

Condescending staff,shít service, bad tasting food laid out nicely on the plate.

By Sleepyhead |

Han Dynasty’s food is just okay at best and usually their dishes send you straight to the toilet the next morning especially the ones with the dry peppers. I only get one dish because the others I’ve tried have been terrible and I’ve thrown away multiple dishes I’ve tried from them. The staff is a mixed bAg. One waiter recommended a disgusting entree I couldn’t finish as his favorite meal and some others seem to not know anything about the menu. One of the managers at the University City branch is a complete condescending dick. Someone needs to fire that guy because he has poor customer service skills. I don’t see much of a future for this place now that their overpriced dine in is shut down and they can’t even facilitate deliveries. Good riddance and hope something better ends up in that space.

Asian parents super happy with this amazingly authentic food....:)

By nyc2mom |

Pros: Amazing food We had the: Kung Pao Chicken - best tasting and most tender we've ever had. We were blown away! Mapo Tofu - parents, husband & I kept gushing at how soft the tofu was. Dan Dan Noodles - perfectly seasoned - slightly sweeter than the ones we've had in NYC but oh so delicious...the noodles had the right amount of spring to them! Also had such a delicate peanut & sesame flavor too. String Beans with Minced Pork- perfectly seasoned and cooked. Hot Sauce Style Fish - delicious and consistent with the dish we've had in NYC. My parents, husband, son, & I were all very happily satiated here. Service was on point! Loved meeting Henry the manager. He was so friendly and described the special training of the chefs to achieve the tenderness of some of the dishes. We went on a Saturday for lunch and there was no wait. Cons: Nothing!! Hints: Go at lunchtime on a Saturday!

Loved it!

By Florence M |

Beautiful building interior and ambience! Loved the Dan Dan noodles. I thought the crunchy spicy cucumbers were ok. I can see why they're popular. They reminded me of these pickled vegetables I get with my Bon Chon chicken back home. Also enjoyed their wontons in chilli oil. Loved the spice level on them. We also tried their chicken in garlic sauce with a level 2 spice and wow it was so good! I wish I knew what those crispy straw like veggies were... my friend thought it was ginger but I doubt it because I can't stand too much ginger. There was ginger in the dish, but a nice amount and not too overpowering. Definitely have to come back here next time we are in town. Service was great too. Very attentive. The best part? Our bill was only $48! And we ordered other stuff that I didn't mention. Great value and an awesome meal!

Nice spicy Szechuan dishes

By TravelLily007 |

The food is quite good. While it is not exactly your Chinatown-authentic food, it is much better than your Americanized chain-store Chinese a la P. F. Chang's. They tend to have spicy Szechuan cuisine. They do all the old reliable dishes very well, such as Hot and Sour Soup, Kung-pao Chicken, Sting Beans, Mapo Tofu. The noodles are good as well. They come in pretty big portions as well. Decor is nice. Service acceptable.

Must haves: Dan Dan Noodles!

By Betty U |

Have been here 7 or 8 times, almost every time we're in Philly. I still miss the original older building on Chestnut, which was cozier and had a better vibe. This old bank building is so vast and open, it just doesn't have the same feel. The food is still awesome, cheap and plentiful. I always get the Dan Dan noodles and they are always gone - everyone loves them. My second favorite dish is the pork dumplings in chili oil; the heat level is just a bit lower than the Dan Dan noodles, but I would bathe in that chili oil! The soups are huge - definitely meant for sharing or a dinner serving, but you might want to crank up the heat level on some of the soup. Our last server was OK, but that's it; he'd take one person's drink order and would then bolt without checking with the rest of the table; it was just a little odd. They do have Lucky Buddha beer, though, which always makes me happy (love that bottle).

small, focused menu

By Barry M |

Shared a late dinner here. The building is an old bank, good interior, impressive bar area. The place was busy at 9pm for dinner. Everything on the menu is rated 1 - 10 based on the heat factor of the dish. We shared DanDan noodles (6) and they were excellent with a great sauce. (served and mixed at the table), I had the hot sauce style chicken (7), it was VERY oily...I poured oil off the dish at dinner and with the leftovers. (7) is supposed to be very hot, I didn't think so, I expected more heat. The meal was average+. We also had garlic sauce style chicken (3), not hot at all, it was also ok+. Big beer selection, some interesting drink ideas. Service was excellent and attentive. I may try Han again by checking out the bar.

Delicious spicy food

By Gregg A |

I ordered dry pepper chicken and dry pot pork, and they were out of this world. This restaurant is not afraid to make things spicy, and I loved it. Others in our family ordered dan dan noodles and spicy cucumbers as appetizers, plus we had eggplant and tofu. Everything was fantastic and I can't wait to go back.

Dinner

By Robert L |

Whoa. Great authentic Chinese food but be careful of the spice. All dishes can be ordered on a spice scale of 1-10. We shared dishes and ordered spice levels of 6-7-and -8. The 8 was nearly inedible and as a group, we are very spice tolerant and generally seek spicy foods. I went through many tissues blowing my nose.

Spicy Chinese Food

By john u |

If you like spicy, you'll love this restaurant. The Don Don noodles are my favorite. Not your typical Chinese food. I've been here numerous times. Highly recommended.

fair chinese dinner

average spring rolls, ok dumplings. dan dan noodles were nice beef lo mein good. Tea smoked duck was made with hacked duck, meaning bones and fragment of bone was attached to many pieces not good.

Good food

By Itsadadslife |

We visited this restaurant and ordered a bunch of items off the appetizer portion of the menu. They ask what level spicy you wanted for each item 1-10 and everything we ate was great. I recommend the dumplings and the Dan Dan noodles.

Spicy goodness

By State of Mainer |

We absolutely loved everything we ordered. We started with the Spicy Crispy Cucumber, which was my husband's favorite as it combined a good heat level with the cooling of the cucumber; the Dumplings in Chili Oil, my favorite; and Dan Dan noodles, also delicious. Our entrees were not as spicy- Black Bean Style Chicken and Garlic Sauce Style Beef, with Pork Fried Rice. Service was attentive and friendly, the restaurant is beautiful and the price for all that food for three people was very moderate. If you like spicy food I recommend it.

Great Authentic Chinese Food

By Kari1234 |

Scallions pancakes are a must, and the chicken dumplings were scrumptious. I tried the cumin chicken but it’s pretty cuminy. The hot pepper pot was Must with a Spicy Kick be warned it’s Hot :) I had the Lo Mein was perfect. The service was friendly and just low key location. The location is about 8 min walk through the park from the Hilton.

Delicious food great space

By sarinablackheart |

I was expecting a typical Chinatown restaurant ... And was happily surprised to walk into a converted bank with beautiful giant columns. Got there early and had a drink at the bar which was nice then when my friends arrived we sat at a large corner banquette. The guest of honor was a vegetarian and we had no problem ordering food that we could all eat. The roasted eggplant, string beans, vegetable dumplings, chicken dumplings and don don noodles were all delicious and different than any Chinese food places I've ordered from - just a level or two above in quality and taste. That and it wasn't expensive. I would definitely recommend - the only negative was the tv screens showing the football game - which to some might be an added bonus

Wow! Blown away!!

By BadAngus |

Came for a late dinner and found tons of choices, all capably explained by our server. Dan Dan noodles were the spicy star of the show, but everything was very, very good and authentic. 2 apps and 2 entrees was 2x more food than we needed. We'd return in a New York minute!

Great Place, not as expensive as it looks.

By Jose Miguel G |

The restaurant is really nice and clean. They have lunch specials that are delicious at a great price. The portions are big and they have spicy and non spicy dishes. Definitely take a look at this place if you are in old city.

Great food, Great service

By njcars |

We have been here a few times now and out of the many places here in Philly, it has become one of my favorite go to places whenever I visit my daughter who goes to school in Philly. The Dan Dan noodles, the spicy cucumber and the fried rice without the soya sauce are some of my favorites. Portions are large and we always have leftovers!!!

Very correct Chinese table

By Frank A |

A Chinese like it should be: fresh produce, friendly staff, and original ideas. Try the shedded potato for freshness. Very kind also to indicate the spicyness on the menu.

Great Asian Foods

By oil710 |

After our first stop here a few days ago we were so impressed that today we returned for lunch. There are several very spicy dishes. One favourite is their Dan Dan Noodles. They have a good array of beers and wines and spirit. You may need to book for dinner. A must visit restaurant in old town Philadelphia.

surprisingly good

By Corbin G |

We walked around for a bit and found this place. It was better than we expected. Staff was good, food was good. We both ate most of it, which is shocking because they give you enough food to stuff a pig with. Can't use chopsticks? Just ask for silverware.

Too hot. Cannot taste the meal

By BellaV |

Over priced Chinese place. We got 2 entries from the special menu. They had no spice level and dumplings. Dumplings had too little meet but too much dough. Looked too pale, boiled. Not good. Shredded duck would be ok if not so much spice that you cannot even taste the meal. And we like spicy food. Would not recommend this place.

Slow service....and not very good

By DeLano M |

I order the Crispy Rice dish and boy was I disappointed. It at least 15 minutes after everyone else was served for them to bring me out my dish after having to ask for it twice! It was a bowl of pure nastiness. I couldn't eat it...they end up taking it off the bill after one of the ladies in the group complained on my behalf. The waitress responded resoundingly "Why" to the mere request and to be honest I wouldn't eat it for free. The dumplings with chili aioli was not appetizing either. Some of my company enjoyed their meals...maybe they'll get on to say how much they liked it but my experience sucked.

Yowza! Definitely Spicy Szechuan!

By Jan P |

There were four of us in our party two of whom like spicy food and the other two who favor milder foods. Fortunately, this restaurant was able to accommodate all of our palates! The menu is extensive and fortunately, our waiter explained the levels of spiciness and was very accommodating with our many questions (first timers at this restaurant!). Given our likes and dislikes, he helped with our order which included the must-try Dan Dan Noodles (which starts off at level 6 but we took it down to a 3 and even then, it was still too spicy for some of us!), the pork buns (very good), beef scallion (our favorite and resembles mongolian beef), chicken garlic (delicious!) and pork crispy rice (also very good!). Each of the entrees was served family style and came out when ready so don't expect to get all of your entrees at the same time. That was fine by us since we wanted to experience each dish separately and our table was too small for all of the entrees to fit anyway! Prices were very reasonable - our meal came to less than $70 (we didn't order any alcohol or fancy drinks). Service was fast and efficient (our water glasses and tea cups were always refilled) and again, we had a very accommodating waiter who was knowledgeable about the menu inside and out. The restaurant is located in an old bank building with high ceilings and I did find it a little odd that there were multiple big screen TVs (weekend football was showing on all channels if you were interested). We had 6:30 reservations on a Saturday and the place was absolutely bustling! We would definitely make a return visit the next time we are in the City of Brotherly Love!

Real stuff!

By William H |

Went for lunch. Quick and reasonable prices. Service was great! Beef and peppers was great, not too spicy. Menu will let you know how hot the choices are. Worth it for the real Chinese flavor.

Some like it hot. I know I do!

By foodsweatandbeers |

This location, nestled in the heart of Old City, is enormous and wonderful. They've got a great happy hour, and you could feasibly just spend a whole week working your way through the menu of appetizers, soups, noodles, and entrees. Spice ranking from 1-10 fit for any taste, but take it seriously. I've gone with buddies who have higher tolerance than I and ended up not feeling my tongue for the next day or two. They've got a great back room or upstairs for large parties, and they really can cater to your budget or needs. Totally sweet bartenders, the food is always on point, and I love the color and warmth of the space. If you skip the dry pepper fish, you're doing yourself a disservice.

Excellent eggplants, all right chicken

By Reviewer71 |

The eggplants with garlic sauce were excellent. The chicken sweet and sour style so so, just too much stuff going on in that plate. Had take away, place was busy but they were superfast, excellent service. About 27 USD (+ rice included), not bad, but not in my top list. I would give 3.5 if I could.

Change is not always good...

By Ed M |

I have been to Han Dynasty many times over the years when it was at the larger location on Chestnut. We went to the new location last night. I hate to say it because they had the best Chinese Food in the city, but not anymore. It seems they have changed recipes and the food is just not as good. The Dan Dan noodles were our go to app but this time the noodles were completely different, almost mushy and the flavor was completely different. Will not order them again. I also noticed that my dish had long hots when they were not listed in the description. It seems that they have moved away from the fantastic recipes of the past. BTW - The staff were very nice and helpful.

Pretty good

By Robert Miles |

We hit up Han Dynasty after struggling to find a good ramen place near the east side of the Old City. The location is key and the atmosphere was really cool. The food was almost all good. I'd give 4-5 stars on the Dan Dan noodles, wontans in chili oil, and the spicy crunch cucumbers. Our main entree was the hot sauce style chicken. It looked amazing, but was just meh. It just seemed a little too bland. All in all I'd go again and maybe pick another main entree.

Shame on the owner(s)

By Rodney T |

Decided to meet up at H.D with friends and it was a poor experience. This place is so neglected and it shows. Dust everywhere. So much dirt and water on the table, it almost seemed magnetic to anything that was placed on there. The drinks were watered down, food was mediocre and the service was crass! Day and night difference from when we used to come before the pandemic..

Spicy Delicious

By mikea168 |

We had a variety of food. The quality is high end with affordable prices. The hot pot was SPICY but if you like spice this is the place for you. Can't wait to go back.

Great place in Olde City!

By fred e |

Our 2nd visit to Han dynasty was on New Year's eve. Arrived around 4:00, no wait! Great wait staff. Delicious food! Everybody should order one thing and share family style. The only thing that could be a downside for some is the food comes out when ready, in no particular order. We actually got our soup last, but everything was great. Full bar, lots of drink choices, plus beer and wine. Loved the ginger ale and vodka infused with lemon grass! Walked to the end of the block and enjoyed the fireworks!

Chinese

By Jackherzog |

Just the best, fresh made to order dishes. Consistant quality and service with great atmosphere. Salt shrimp, scallops in oil and chicken wings are my favorites.

Surprisingly Good Chinese

By Joseph D |

In Philly for a night visiting family and was out for a walk around 10 and were looking for a place to grab a drink and some light food. We stumbled upon this place and gave it a try. It’s located in a unique looking building and the long serpentine bar is different than most. We sat at the bar and had some drink and appetizers, so can’t review the main dishes they serve. We had the Steamed Dumplings in Chili Sauce, Fried Chicken Dumplings and Spring Rolls. They were all very good and they were able to adjust the heat level for all of their dishes. It’s an interesting place with good food.

Surprise

By Julio R |

From the outside, the building does not look like chinese restaurant. And the inside feels like in the movie theatre but a bit brighter. Food taste good and overall experience was good. Good service from the all the staff member.

Family Dinner

By AjayK |

Excellent Chinese and mandarin food. I had my daughter’s graduation dinner with my extended family, on recommendation of my daughter. It was sheer delight with such mouthwatering food. The service was extremely hospitable and pleasant. Cost wise also it was reasonable and not pricy to compare with other similar fine dine restaurants.

Some very tasty authentic dishes

By Theresa D |

Great food selections that are not the typical Asian American selections seen in othet restaurants. Sadly, food preparation seems to be uneven between lunch and dinner. Two lunch experiences were very disappointing because my meals were so overly salty that I literally could not finish my meals and I generally use a fair amount of salt when I cook so I am not adverse to salt. Two evening experiences, as part of a group that had reserved a section of the dining room in advance, provided delightful perfectly seasoned multiple course family style meals that beg you to return. Service was excellent both at lunch and dinner.

10 no way but loved it

By Piperatlanta |

A 10...no way! We loved the Dan Dan Noodles but got them at a 4. The pot we got was good but wished it would have come with rice. The wraps were hot and very tasty. The fried rice was pretty good and the gluten free noodles were perfect for my GF son. Love when restaurants have GF and make it easy! The service was slow. The restaurant was super cool decor! Used to be a bank. We just got in from NYC and this was the first place we went to and the food was hot and good. Cool location but parking was hard. We parked around the corner for about $15 so factor that in to the cost of dinner.

The building is more interesting than the menu...

By aLonglunch |

The food was not bad, but neither was it anything you could walk away saying was impressive. The place emptied pretty rapidly in early evening as the diners were in straight from work. When we left after 8pm we were among a very small number of people left. Ok for a quick eat early evening.

Great, Authentic Experience

By JCW703 |

Very good, authentic Chinese foods. Highly recommend the "dan-dan noodles"; the Mrs wasn't as happy with her pork belly meal, but that was just b/c it wasn't spicy enough for her.

Delicious Christmas Day meal!

By Amanda S |

We were in Philadelphia for Christmas Day and found Han's Dynasty, as it was a Chinese food restaurant that was open! We scheduled our order online and it was done right on time. I had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were perfectly spicy. I had never had this dish before and I didn't care for the texture of the noodles, but that was a personal preference - flavor was awesome. My husband had General Han's Chicken and it was incredible. Spicy and very layered in flavor. We also ordered spring rolls and scallion pancakes and enjoyed those as well. If we lived in the area, we would definitely return!

Fun place with decent food

By Lauren S |

Food was decent. Some items really good like the cabbage side, chili wontons and dumplings and some like the rabbit were just ok. The rabbit wasn't cut correctly and there were shards of the bone were throughout the dish. It was a shame because I love rabbit and its so hard to find in restaurants.

Good Szechuan food in this neighborhood

By mdmprez |

We had a dim sum appetizer which was very bready so not done well here. The shredded duck with ginger was good, with fresh green vegetables and a side dish of rice. We went early so service was quick, and our server was very friendly. The atmosphere is hard to mistake - it was originally the Foreign Exchange, and not much natural light enters this great hall-like restaurant.

Love the location!

By RyderMcCulloch |

This was our first time visiting this part of the neighborhood. We come every year Army/Navy football is in town. What a great place to eat at after leaving the game. Every drop of food we had was very delish and pretty spicy (which we like!) I love love the dumplings and our waiter insured us that our entrees would be more than enough for us to share. Portions are large here, even the apps. I was also happy to find that considering how much food we ordered, our bill was soooo reasonable! Decor is definitely unique. Depending on where you sit you view is so different from whats behind you. I've been to asian restaurants that don't necessarily reflect the region the food your eating is in and I can appreciate that. Don't get me wrong, there is a giant dragon on the wall but then theres also roman pillars! Love this place!

Unique Chinese food with sliding spice scale

By VkmV04 |

My mom, who has a very delicate tummy, my son & I went to Han dynasty on chestnut street for lunch & thoroughly enjoyed. While the ac was not working well, the waiter was wonderfully helpful. Instead of going for 3 entrees, he advised us to try 2 entrees & supplement with an appetizer. Great advice! We tried the scallion pancakes (amazing!!!!), spring rolls (good) and the chicken fried dumplings (nothing special) and had garlic styled pork & lamb. My mom thoroughly enjoyed her mild prepared lamb & the pork was also good. Both dishes came out different even though they used the same sauce. We had plenty of leftovers to enjoy for another meal at home.

Crispy Duck Not Too Crispy

By Blue J |

The interior is beautiful. Classic, old school former bank exchange that has retained a lot the that charm with marble, dark woods, and architectural features. In terms of ambiance, I give this place very high marks. Wife and I had chicken with garlic and the crispy half duck from the Chef's favorites. Chicken and garlic had noodles that were a bit greasy. It was supposed to be spicy, but fell well short of our expectations. Crispy duck dish was a very odd combination. The dish is served with several doughy buns and a small bowl of hoison sauce. It was not clear if you were supposed to some how compose a "sandwich" with the duck and the hoison sauce. Overall, the duck could have been much crispier. For a Schezwan style restaurant, I was disappointed that the duck did not come with some type of special sauce. Hoison sauce was a cop out. Both dishes were generous portions so you will have enough to eat. The bill for the 2 of us was $45 before tip. A little on the high side considering I felt the food was average at best. My big issue is that they brought my wife's plate out first. It took another 10 minutes to serve my duck. There is no excuse for such service any where. If we were courting, this type of service would have created a very awkward moment. Also, the restroom had graffiti on the stall wall, and the toilet appeared to be cracked and awkwardly repaired with epoxy. I still maintain that the appearance of the rest room speaks volumes for a restaurant. Wait staff was very polite and attentive. We enjoyed our server very much. We probably will not go back, as there are better Asian establishments in the city.

Meh

By NYC2VT |

The service was okay and the food was just standard. Nothing great and with so many other choices in town I probably wouldn’t go back.

Authentic !

By Girlfromsouthmain |

This is not your typical American Chinese restaurant. The plates here are rated 1 - 10 depending on the amount of "heat" you can / will be able to enjoy. I am usually a 4/5 and at that level, I find the food flavorful and spicy. Our favorite is the Black Bean Beef, Scallion Pancakes, WonTons in Chili Oil and DanDan Noodles. The service is friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere (in an old bank building) very comfortable. There are many TVs at the bar area to accommodate singles or couples who want to watch all the action , or who just want to sit at the bar. There is also a nice selection of interesting beers, most on tap.

worst Chinese food I ever had

By Starviagera |

The table next to us was as disgusted by their food as we were. Even Panda Express would be excellent in comparison. Would not be back!

Among the better Chinese food I've had in the US

By Rosy K |

I was pleasantly surprised by Han Dynasty. As a Korean-American having lived in Beijing and Hong Kong over the last 8 years, I normally don't flock to Chinese restaurants when I am back in the States. But the food, while not 100% authentic, was really quite close! It's one of the few Chinese restaurants I've been to in the States that actually uses Sichuan peppercorn which is one of my favorite things! The mapo tofu was pretty on point (though I wish they had used Sichuan peppercorn), as was the spicy cold noodle appetizer. The dry pot is actually pretty saucy, rather than the non-sauce version one would get in the mainland. The service was friendly and explained the Sichuan peppercorn for the uninitiated. Another part worth noting is that the restaurant is located in a converted old bank with super high ceiling and interesting architecture. If you want to try Chinese food a major step up from Panda Express without having to go to a non-English menu place in Chinatown, this is a solid compromise!

Great food.

We always go here to have lunch, but this one day three guys that worked on that Thursday the 19th. Must have put something in me and my wife’s drinks. They watched us drink the drinks they made for us. They laughed while looking at us and later on that evening. We both got sick.

Great food.

Excellent food and service. Although I dont recommend the spicy oil to be added. It was mouth numbing. It is optional I opted to add the wife excluded. If I ordered again I would ommit. Busy place make reservations.

Best outside of Chinatown!

Great location in old city Philadelphia! Cool space with great food. The Dan Dan noodles are delicious. Love their Wonton soup, too! Very good service! Full bar with drink specials. Lunch specials, too.

Should have gone to Chinatown...

By Michele M |

A major disappointment - I should have guessed when recommended by a vegetarian (no slight, there can be great Chinese vegetarians options), but hardly a vegetable on the menu. What there was, was sodium, sodium and more sodium. The claim to be Szechuan may may mean that there are Szechuan peppercorns and sodium. Very suspicious of the waitress who raved about our choices - dan dan noodles, duck, and spareribs - oh, I forgot there were twice as many green peppers as spareribs (so much for vegetables).

This establishment would not answer the phone !

By lmk1126 |

We did not eat here because we tried to call and make a reservation but there was no answer so we taxied all across town to just walk in ( at 8 PM) figuring we could sit at the bar and wait for a table. The two hostesses were very nasty when we questioned why they did not answer the phone. Based on their rudeness we left and ate elsewhere. Based on how crowded it was, I would asssume the food was good..

Delicious Chinese Food

We went here for dinner on a Saturday night without reservations and got in with no problem. The food was very good and they were able to accommodate my g/f husband.

Exceptional Asian cuisine

There are several locations around the city although my favorite is at second and Chestnut with its high ceiling interior as a result of it's former life as a Bank.

Philly vacation

After being disappointed at Sang Kee Peking Duck we were very pleased to find this restaurant. The food is excellent but hot. There was a variety of suble spices beyond hot. We are Westerners so are familiar with spicy food. They have a heat scale from 1-10. Many of their dishes are 6 and above. I would recommend ordering a couple of levels below your accustomed tolerance in case the chef has a heavy hand that night. You can easily add more at the table

This place is so cool! Service rocks. The food is delicious, you can choose your heat level and there are so many choices! The atmosphere is killer! Dan Dan Noodles are a must! Heat Seekers come here! It's a Ten!

Dinner for five. Very disappointing

By MarkMiklo |

Dinner for five. Very disappointing service and average food and expensive given the food is simply touristy Chinese food. Egg drop soup was tasteless and two entries a semi-tasty edible slop.

Mixed bag

By reisenderjo |

Not so sure about that one. Good service but the food did not convince. The starters were excellent. Had the Dandan noodles, fantastic sauce and the noodles just right. Veggie dumplings were nice as well. But there was the Kung Pao, should probably have chosen something else. My issue with it...all the right ingredients but everything smothered in a sticky, heavy and way too sweet sauce. Why drown the dish in that monster sauce? Upside: The building and interior is fantastic.

Exceptional!

We were visiting a friend in Philadelphia, and she suggested meeting at Han Dynasty. Great idea! Unfortunately on Saturday night without a reservation, the wait was about an hour. Oh well, lack of planning and all that... But we went over to The Plough around the corner for a time-filling beer. Back to Han...First, the decor is very unusual. It appears to be an old bank building with very high ceilings - very nice, still in the style of 1900 or so. We had a variety of dim sum and entree dishes - all very creative and delicious. Service was great, and prices were okay for the quality and quantity. And food came quickly. A quiet romantic place this isn't - way too popular. My suggestion: make a reservation! 2 enthusiastic thumbs up!

The Waitress That Knew

By Russell L |

Took a large group (7) during a business meeting there, on the advice of a local. Great choice. Yumi, the waitress that knew everything, recommended the sampler, where they simple just bring your table all the good stuff. Which they did, non-stop for a long time. Everything was good, some was great. The amazing part was that Yumi could accurately describe each and every dish, giving recommendations on spiciness and flavors; she was an integral and great part of the meal. Highly recommended.

Flavorful, high quality food

This is a classy restaurant near Penns' landing. It is always lively with fun filled crowd. I would definitely make a reservation for dinner, especially during weekends. It offers a wide variety of alcoholic beverages and dishes. Their dum dum noodles is out of this world.

Can't wait to come back!

Great service + friendly staff! They have a bar + restrooms inside. Street parking or parking in the deck around the corner (they will validate!). Try the spicy, crunchy cucumbers or the black bean chicken. So delicious!

Spicy!

If you like spicy food Han Dynasty is your place. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is trendy. Great place to meet friends and have a fun dinner.

good spicy food...

Love this place; may want to make reservation sometime especially weekends. Dan Dan noodle is one of the best head start. Please select your spicy level or else.... Staffs services are fast and furious and helpful at times.

Great Asian fusion

Don't skip the Dan Dan!

By Meredith D |

I was here with a few people, and we all shared our meals - family style. The Dan Dan noodles were amazing and flavorful - the level 6 was just right for us. (We put the pork on the side for vegetarians.) The bok choy with mushrooms also was a big hit (and the plate looked lovely)!. There were also rave reviews for the flounder and lamb. To my surprise, the mojitos were well done. (Who orders that with Chinese, right?!) We were disappointed that we couldn't finish our meal with hot tea - as the teapot in the back had been shut off.

Oddly, the NYC location is better

By lhamilt77 |

I first learned about Han Dynasty when I worked near the East Village in NYC. I indulged many times in their dan dan noodles. Fast forward, I'm now living in Philly and learn that Han Dynasty was founded in here, and this is where all the chefs come to train. Then why is the dan dan noodle recipe in Philly sooooo different from the one in NYC? The one in Philly tastes almost entirely like noodles in a peanut (sesame seed) sauce, in comparison to NYC where the chili oil is more heavily relied upon. Not remotely the same. I personally like the NYC dan dan noodles MUCH better.

The real deal!

Authentic, spicy and friendly; Han Dynasty put a smile on my face and a sweat on my brow. The service was cool and friendly. They helped my wife choose and adapt an item so it didn't burn her up. Wonderful food and folks😘

Thought we would try it!

Food and service very good...loved sitting in bar area. If you like hot and spicy you'll get it here. Server will explain levels of heat in different menu items and will adjust for you as needed. Try it, you'll like it!

Birthday celebration dinner with family members

By sdbenegal |

We has some of the best Chinese food in recent memory on the occasion of birthday celebration of a family member. We tried beef, chicken, goat and shrimp preparations and all of them were absolutely delicious. If you are not used to spiciness of food, you may want to alert the waiter to tone down the spices. The restaurant is in downtown Philadelphia. Street parking is available in front of the restaurant.

DAN DAN NOODLES OH YES

By LilyYea |

This place is unlike any place I have ever been to. The Dan Dan noodles were delicious and the kung pao chicken was also very good.

Chef-friend said we had to go herfe- He was right

By Marguerite a |

We were told we had to have the DanDan noodles, which we loved. Their unusual offerings were especially cool. We had Chili Tofu and Scallions with Lamb. We had enough leftovers for another big meal; the amount of food we received could easily have fed five people. Service was great; our water glasses and tea were kept filled. My husband had a bottle of Yard Double Bock. I asked for (and had) a Margaritta that was not sweet. I have a hard time getting a bartender to make one but the Han did so. The place is in an old bank or an old theatre. Eating here was like returning to the 1920's.

Great food!

By jonhansen11 |

We went with a few other couples. It was a good time and the food was excellent. We had heard of the Dan Dan noodles so we made a point of getting them and I wish we had ordered more. They were amazing! Most of the food is pretty spicy there, which we all enjoyed. We were a party of six and we all got an appetizer and an entree, which turned out to be more than enough food. We had multiple entrees, but everyone most liked the garlic chicken and a dry pot something... Can't quite remember the titles. It came to about $50 a couple. We were going to try the chefs menu, but it requires 8 people. Great spot and we will definitely be gong back.

Fried rice dinner

I was in the mode for fried rice and it was great. The House Fried Rice special was truly outstanding. It was loaded with meat, post, chicken and shrimp. The wait staff was extremely friendly and well versed on the menu.

Botched takeout order; indifferent service!

By JPE2022 |

After ordering takeout in person and returning home, the bag contained: 1 missing item; 1 wrong item; and 1 mediocre item. And my name on the order was misspelled, further confusing the issue. After calling and being put on hold, the person who took my call returned to tell me that the missing item was in a bag on the counter; I was given only one bag. Then I was told to come back (I live 30 minutes away) or they would only give me credit for the next time I came there, as if I would want to return. When I demanded credit for my account, I was told only the manager could handle it and was asked to hold once again. Since they took my number, I asked to have the manager call back and tell me why I can’t get money back for something they know I didn’t receive. They didn’t have the courtesy to call back!

Love Heat! Love this Place!

Han, thank you for introducing us to Sichuan cuisine. Son lives in China. Had chance to visit Chengdu this past summer. Loved the food but I still thinks yours is the best---
