Our hotel concierge (Hotel Del) messed up our reservation. There was no reservation on file for us. When we arrived there were 6-8 other people dining at the sushi bar where we had requested to sit. The hostess would not allow us to sit there, because she said there were previous reservations. The whole Time we were there, there were at least Six places open at the sushi bar. The food was excellent, but the hostess refusing to allow us to sit at the sushi bar when there was clearly room, was a huge Disappointment.

One of my favorite sushi joints, the quality of the fish is outstanding and the rice is fenomenal. I recommend the O Toro and the Uni Ikura hand roll.

The flavor of sushi comes from selecting the finest and freshest ingredients. Dining at Hane was the most enjoyable I have experienced. The Calamari appetizer far exceeds anything I've had from Maui, Portland, or anywhere else in San Diego. Located near Balboa Park, street parking is easy.

The sister restaurant to the more traditional Ota, Hane has lot's of options for rolls and atypical items like the salmon tostada on a crisp plantain chip or eggplant with spicy tuna on top. The soft shell crab is always fresh and cooked perfectly and the king crab legs are expensive, but the meat is always tender and perfectly fried. All the fish is fresh and the oysters are always sweet and perfectly prepared. A go to every time we are in San Diego.

For many years I wanted to try a real sushi bar and this sushi is exceptional. I went from the live octopus, live sweet shrimp and had the monkfish liver, uni, ikura, the bluefin tuna belly... Eggplant and asahi beer. First time, with a gourmet accomplice it was about 400 dlls, with every penny. Took my mother the very next day and it was half of that... Loved it but mom cried cause of the sweet shrimp's head was still moving when we were steady eating it's tail. This is by far, a quality experience for the sushi lovers and gourmet adventurers.

Can't beat some of the rolls and specialties here. Honeymoon oysters are huge and very well done with uni and quail eggs atop. Portion size seems to have been cut back a bit from many previous visits. Some new servers seem not too familiar with the menu and preparations. A solid place nonetheless. With their other location, Sushi Ota, they do the best sushi and Japanese in San Diego.

great saki selection, creative rolls and dishes! Memorable taste and flavors that will have your taste-buds begging you for a return visit. The atmosphere is lite and casual and the service was solid. I will definitely return.

Authentic Japanese restaurant, sushi is amazing, toro, otoro are top quality. The rest of the dishes are good but nothing spectacular, service was good, hostess was bad, no valet parking like many restaurants in San Diego. I would say hane and nobu are the best options for a good Japanese meal in SD.

Thinking this place is own and ran by ota sushi in ob then it should have close if not then same standard. But not as good. It was good but not really.

Usually it´s hard to find a real Japaneses making rolls for you and preparing the shusi in front of you. If you seat at the bar you will see that they are doing everything fresh in front of you. The food is great and tasty. I will go back for sure.

The decor is simple and relaxed. There are FOUR sushi chefs behind the counter. They had: Otoro (very fat tuna) Belly hamachi Mirugai clams Abalone clams Monk fish liver Kobe beef sashimi, and Nato and the most beautiful Uni (sea urchin eggs) I've ever seen or tasted.... They have some exquisite sakes to go along with this superb fish collection. This is ALL you really need to know. THIS IS ONE OF THE TOP SUSHI BARS IN THE COUNTRY, IMHO!

This was a second choice when Sushi Ota was completely booked out - but now this is a top choice for us. OUTSTANDING in every way and less pricey than Ota, the quality and service is excellent!!

Hane Sushi came highly rated and we were not disappointed. What looks ordinary on the outside is transformed inside at night with dramatic lighting. It is not inexpensive, but the ingredients were fresh and of the highest quality. I had Maguro, Saba, Unagi sushi plus one of the Tamago or "egg omlet," all Nigiri. My husband devoured the specialty roll, which he said was the best ever. Favorite Dish: I have to say the saba or mackerel sushi. It was freshly flown in and you could tell. It's an energetic space, so not good for intimate chats, but who cares when the food is that good. The service was a bit hectic, but friendly and helpful.

I've taken my friends that have never tried sushi and who are too scared and friends that have tried sushi but have left a bad taste in their mouths and 100% of the times, they are hooked for life. They would call and text me and ask when is the next Hane trip. My friends from out of state to visit or for business will make it a point to stop here. That is just how good it is. It is a must try.

I always believe that sushi shouldn't be that expensive for what it is. I can understand if you order a full plate of shrimp, or an 8 oz steak, but small pieces of meat or fish mix with rice? I order a crunchy shrimp roll. Nothing spectacular or particularly great about it. Service was good.

When you visit San Diego you have to come to Hane Sushi , the ceviche roll is AAA , the service is AAA well everything is AAA , it's a MUST at San Diego 👍👍👍

The best in San Diego. That's all there is to it. Try the honeymoon appetizer.

First the bad: We were there at opening time on a Friday with reservations for a party of 6, we were seated promptly however before we left the restaurant became very full and extremely noisy. I had the chirashizushi, mixed seafood served over a bowl of sushi flavored rice. I have eaten a lot of sushi mostly in Japan and regret to say that not all of the fish was as fresh as it should be. Most of the items were fine but the tuna appeared left from the day before. Now the good: The other dishes ordered by the rest of the party were certainly acceptable or better. This restaurant offers a number of items not normally found in American Sushi Ya which is very nice. The service was knowledgeable and attentive. Parking is light years better than Sushi Ota a major plus. It is expensive, BUT good sushi, properly prepared is expensive here or in Tokyo unless you go down to one of the holes in the wall next to Tsukuji Market where the fish mongers eat their lunch. My recommendation would be not to go on a Friday, too crowded and noisy but probably fine the rest of the week. They have a bar serving mixed drinks but this is a place to eat not to drink, if you want to do that go next door to Croce's.

Sat at the sushi bar and had a wonderful dinner and dining experience. Our chef, Sean, was very friendly and kept the dishes coming. Started with a clam miso which was hot and excellent with 4 small clams in each bowl. Next came an assortment of tempura veggies, then on the the fish feast. We had tuna, salmon, snapper, scallop, and several other fish that I can't remember. All the rolls or sushi on rice were wonderful and the assortment was very imaginative. Presentations were were beautiful. It was a visual feast as well watching Sean prepare all the selections from start to finish. The snapper was lightly seared with a torch. It was a great experience to sit a few feet from the preparation and just soak it in. A good value for the amount and quality of food served.

Had dined here in the past and again great sushi as always. The quality of sushi is top grade! It’s the best! This spot gets very busy and you have to make a reservation. The counter is open but gets very filled quickly. The sushi is prepared real well and the fish is so fresh. This sushi restaurant is on the upscale price point but well worth it. To the next plate fellow travelers....

As a Current New Yorker (and former San Deigan), I've had the opportunity to sample some of the best sushi in the world (from the highest end of Manhattan such as Yasuda and Nobu, to the local heavyweight, Ota). I can say without hesitation that Hane is well in this class! It is outstanding. The most critical aspect, as I see it, is the fish - it was so fresh and well selected that it literally melts in your mouth. The specials were superb (Snapper with lemon and sea salt, and the crispy eggplant with spicy tuna), as were the basic pieces of nigiri and the creative rolls. Certainly Hane isn't cheap, but if you really love sushi, it is worth the price! In relation to its cross town rival, Ota, I wouldn say it definitely holds its own...in fact, I would say both the service and the atmosphere were a step up. Though to contrast the food would be tough...they're both so darn good!

If you are a fan of sushi but not a fan of just the run of the mill pop up places that now deep fries sushi or fills the rolls with American foods this is the place I would recommend. The food is unique with a spice that one would expect in this area. They embrace the textures of the fish as well as the flavor and look to compliment it, not mask it. I have only been once but I will be going back again. Consequently I have had sushi from NY to CA as well as is Asia, so I have had my fair share of experience. This is one of my tow best experiences with sushi.

From the owners of Sushi Ota, Hane Sushi offers the freshest and more variety of Japanese food. Sushi and Sashimi was melt in your mouth, bursting with the unique flavors of each type seafood. Cold sake choices were just as special, meeting the discriminating taste buds of sakes affectionados. Take your love of sushi to the next level.

Fresh and tasty sushi. The sushi chefs make this place good. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because the remaining service was below par. For the price, I'd expect the entire restaurant to be top notch. I wanted my tip to go directly to the sushi chef because everyone else who helped us was slow, mediocre and sometimes awkward. This place is good, sushi is great, but for the money I'm not sure if it's worth another visit unless it's a special occasion.

Even better than Azuki and only a couple of blocks aways from it this better but more expensive sushi place is amazing ! Every spacial roll is delicious definitely one of san Diego best.

The sushi was truly fantastic here, nothing missed. Rolls were creative and different. Sashimi as fresh as I have had anywhere. If I lived in San Diego I'd go all the time. Service was friendly and very knowledgeable. The only knock on this place is the somewhat generic decor. It's not a place that draws you back for anything other than the food. For me that is enough, but makes it hard to give a 5 star rating.

This is a regular favorite for premium sushi - freshest of the fresh, all served with perfection from the sushi chef team. Not a weekly outing, but well worth an occasional splurge. While there are some worthwhile competitors (a recent neighborhood favorite comes to mind near Old Town), Hane is a San Diego institution. What's even better is the cleanliness of the restaurant - even more of a must when trusting your gut to uncooked proteins. It's probably the cleanest restaurant - front and back of the house, I've seen.

The restaurant proper is very bare and austere. The sushi and other offering are good and it is a busy eatery. There is a diversity of classic offerings and the service is brisk but attentive. It is authentically Japanese . It was a good eating experience.

Visited Hane for a mothers day dinner and it made the day! Sat at the bar and Yoshi did not lead us astray....chef's choice is the way to go! The fish was super fresh and even the octopus was succulent. Not a big tourist destination which made it very quaint. It is not an inexpensive spot but it is worth the experience.

One of the best! Certainly the freshest I've had! Try the roll with the Kobe beef on top. The server was so sweet. Love it!

I have eaten many times over many years at Hane. My experience borders on amazement and all times very sublime pleasure. The chef and owner Rodger will frequently prepare Omakase for me. It consists of five courses all prepared with the freshest fish and very thoughtful and creative preparation. They also have the coldest beer in town since it is encased in a liquid that has a freezing point below water. A very extensive list of sake. If you want to be a bit less formal you can sit at the Sake bar with Jonathan who can make some great cocktails and tell some good stories and do doubt if you ask pictures of his bikes! Overall best in town right alongside Sushi Ota.

Hane has superb fish. we dine here often because the sushi masters prepare their plates with the utmost care.

Here's my order....Cebiche Roll, Caterpillar, threesome, kitchen sink, tempura crunch and Miso Soup!.. One of the best sushi you will find anywhere. They have put together an incredible fusion of Japanese delicacies and Mexican spices to create one of the best ever: Cebiche Roll.

We travel all over the world and eat sushi. With the said this is one of our favorite places to eat anywhere.

Love this place. Super sushi. People are nice . Very fresh. See pics had the double double. Hard to book online not on open table. Feeling fishy try this place . The broochboss .

We visit the restaurant about once a week, the best staff, Jonathan, Lucy, and all the rest of the girls, the team of sushi chefs are amazing. Specials are always a must try, coldest beer in San Diego

I don't know much about sushi so that should temper your perspective on my review. We had a large group (10 people) with multiple plates going around with several Sake bottles. One person took the liberty of ordering for the table and our bill came to about $2k. I don't think many bills would come to this amount as we were a big group and my friend has expensive taste so whatever was ordered, I'm sure it would wow even Houdini if he knew about and loved sushi.

We had already eaten a light dinner in Little Italy, but I was craving sushi on our way back to our hotel. Hane Sushi was in the neighborhood so we went and sat at the sushi bar. It was not busy for a saturday eve at 8:30. The restaurant had minimal decor, but looked clean and very simple. We ordered albacore and yellowtail sushi and a spicy scallop roll. The roll was almost the size of 2 rolls with 10 pieces (hence the $16). Everything tasted very fresh and was delicious. I've never had scallop rolls before and it was so good. The sushi chef said the scallops were from Japan. I really thought the quality of the fish was worth the prices that they were charging. If you want really good, hi-quality sushi. This is the place.

Ok Let me tell you I'm a crazy foodie person and I love love food!! I have never had sushi as good as this!!!!! Ever!!! Period.

This is an excellent restaurant. Superior management, the freshest seafood, courteous professional staff and very attractive clientele. Unfortunately, the noise level is extreme, so my advice is to dine early and be sure to make a reservation.

This is the third time we come here and have an issue with the booking lady, she is always rood, last time we where 5 min. Early the place was empty and she dis not let us seat. This time we arrived 8:00 sharp and she said we could not seat until all of us where here, always with a bad atritude in a Sunday night half of the tables empty. Sushi is ok but it is not worth it.

We are no sushi experts but we can tell fresh fish from old, lesser-quality fare. The sashimi was perfection. Each type of fish-- tuna, salmon, eel, squid-- melted in my mouth and was delicately flavored. My husband was equally entranced. Sushi chef was very patient and answered every naive question.

Had a quick business lunch here. Sushi was very good, prices were great. Service was fast and friendly. Definitely not a touristy spot. We were referred by a local. Great food and value.

Would go back for sure !!! Excellent place !!! The food is extraordinary and the service impeccable. Loved it !!! Always good !!! Always packed !!! You have to make reservations.

I come here every time my dad visits from Japan. My dad is a foodie, and he claims Hane Sushi better than many of the sushi restaurants in Japan. The quality of fish they have there is excellent. You know, even before you take a bite, that it is fresh. They only offer the best. The atmosphere is very chic, definitely catered to the Banker's Hill crowd. Not to say that you can't come to Hane Sushi in casual clothing... after all, we're in California! There is a sushi bar that sits plenty, lots of tables and a bar as well with a flat screen TV, often with a big game on. You can't go wrong with anything here. The staff is so friendly, they will help you choose and pick what is best, if you've never had sushi before! Go here, before you go to any of the sushi restaurants in downtown San Diego that are way over priced for their quality.

I'm a tough judge of sushi, and I look for a place with daily specials that aren't available everywhere. This place exceeded my expectations. Although the specialties are expensive, they were delicious and varied. Excellent, attentive service and a nice decor.

Dinner with business partners. This is one of my favorite sushi places in the country. It is on my list of places every time I’m in San Diego. Amazing quality food and service! Good parking if you go one block past then left and over to the next street.

We ate here on a Tues. night, April 19, 2011. While the food quality, service, and atmosphere were good, the prices were way too high and the portions were too small. Japanese is my favorite food, and I have decades of experience dining in Japanese restaurants. My overwhelming impression of Hane Sushi in San Diego is a strong feeling of being ripped off because of the unfairly high prices. The two-piece sushi dishes are $5-$6.50+ or roughly 25-30% overpriced. A vodka martini was $12, which is what I would expect to pay in a much nicer restaurant with live entertainment. The portions of a $30 combo sushi entree, which only came with a mediocre miso soup, no salad, were skimpy. Needless to say, we left feeling hungry and very disappointed. If you are considering dining here, my recommendation is to stay away or be taken for a ride.

We had a spicy roll with habanero sauce and a tuna roll with a lot of fresh jalapeño on top, both delicious, veggie tempura was excellent too. Sake was top notch, and of course we could not leave without dessert: mochi balls!

I’ve been here a few times before but this was my first time seating at the sushi counter. It was a completely different and more personal experience. I ordered the nigiri omakase and it was quite filling. The chef made every nigiri right in front of me, which I greatly appreciated. The quality of the fish was superb. This was elevated by his mixture of toppings. They were always simple toppings that complemented the fish but didn’t overpower it. I recommend this place for any sushi lover out there.

I had been wanting to come here for a long time, and it lived up to my expectations. Amazing, fresh fish, interesting rolls (liked the Diego w/ chopped chili peppers, but the threesome w/ guacamole on top was rather strange). The edamame came cold, which we weren't fond of. When we ordered a second dish, we had them heat it, which was much better. Overall great quality, service and atmosphere. I want to come back and try the belly belly belly.

Our server was Maako and she did a wonderful job. Food was very good, very well proportioned ( good size dishes ), very clean, and very fresh. They have a good sake selection. Prices are in the mid / high side but it is worth every penny. Make reservations, this place is very popular.

One could only dream of owning a place like this... I would assume so at least because they have a very "take it or leave it attitude"... LOL... meaning they are successful enough to not have to bend over backwards for anyone... Good news is they have earned it. This is by far the best Sushi restaurant in San Diego for non-Japanese. What? What did he say?... yes... the best Sushi restaurant in San Diego for non-Japanese. If you 'are' Japanese then their other location with Chef Ota at the bar is possibly better fodder... Sushi Ota is just as good but if your not the president of Sanyo No. America or a Sony big wig well... I've always 'felt' the bias... the food is just good. But "Hane"... same amazing food.... I mean "amazing"... Like New York City drop $1,000 on a sushi dinner for 2 amazing... AMAZING. I'm been here too many times to count. The price tag, for San Diego, is not for the faint of heart... but its worth it. They good, the food is great but they may tell you to leave if you stay too long and they need the table... LOL... yes, even if you just dropped $300 for dinner for 2. Try the king crab...have some sake, try everything... its sublime.

Hane has lots of options for Nigiri sushi & sashimi and a handful of non-fish items like raw or teriyaki beef and such like. All the fish and other ingredients seemed super fresh, perfectly prepared and very tasty [lots of subtle overlay flavors]. It is a decent place to go - just out of the main town - for lunch or dinner but their prices are quite high. Also, I felt that the quantity of food for the $$ did not quite match so you have to spend more money to be satisfied. Also, the wine on offer seemed to be at the higher price level with no budget options. The atmosphere is light and casual, although a little noisy with hard surfaces reflecting the sounds. The service was solid and friendly.

Sushi Ota and Hane are jointly owned and buy the same fish. Hane is contemporary and both have great service.

If you really want good, creative sushi, this is the place. It is not cheap, but who would want to buy cheap sushi and not get the best and freshest.

This restaurant is the BEST!! You will love it and you will love the authentic chefs....they have been trained by the master sushi chef in San Diego and have opened their own restaurant. They are very creative and the sushi is absolutely delicious.

Superior service and quality of sushi - decor is clean, modern and well appointed. More importantly, the sushi was of the best quality. Really delicious! Service was quite exceptional as well. I would definitely return when I’m back in town.
Disappointed
We have been to this establishment several times. All of our experiences were great. Delicious sushi, fresh. Service was always a bit spotty. Sometimes great and sometimes ok. Our last trip we had the worst service. Waitress forgot to put orders in, forgot about our food, to find her was a challenge and the restaurant is not very large. I waited an hour for a roll that was so boring. Horrible. Management never thought to come over and apologize or ask if we needed anything. Not sure we will go back. there are other sushi spots that are just as delicious who care about our business.
