Cute little restaurant!

By Shelli W |

We usually did take out, everything is good (esp. the Pho) EXCEPT for pork unless you like your pork very dry.

Great neighborhood Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant

By Jim N |

Family run neighborhood Asian diner. Good hot & sour soup, egg rolls, and traditional Chinese dishes. Good lunch specials and Pho. Restaurant is clean and service is good. Hong, the owner, remembers most of the customers and their usual orders. If not a regular, can seem clickish, but the fact that so many are regulars is a positive.

More like San Francisco

We were visiting our grandkids in Austin and wanted to take them somewhere different for dinner while Mom and Dad had an evening out. Our daughter suggested Hao-Q, also known as Hao Q and the website is haohaofarwest.com The restaurant is in a simple strip center but the inside is very comfortable and the staff is welcoming. We were there around 7 on a Saturday evening and by 7:30 all tables were full. We get so used to eating Asian food and maybe not paying attention to the dishes we are used to. The steamed dumplings were amazing. So often the dough is thick and maybe a bit tough with a nondescript filling. These had a tasty pork filling that was very tender wrapped inside a very delicate thin dough. They melted in your mouth and were like some I tasted once in San Francisco. It was a perfect example of getting used to ordinary appetizers and being amazed when you taste a simple item that a chef has taken loving care making ($5.95 for 10). The grandkids shared chicken lo main and the one bite of chicken I tried was tender and flavorful. My husband had moo shu pork ($9.50) which he enjoyed a lot. I had the Neptune Platter ($13.00), sizzling shrimp, scallops, squid, mushrooms, onions, chestnuts, snow peas, broccoli and carrots in a light wine sauce. The seafood was perfectly cooked - meaning that some chef had not killed good raw seafood by overlooking it. The entire dish was delicious. Our mains came with fried or white rice and as expected, the portion size was very large...lots of leftovers - but not the dumplings. Two orders were devoured quickly. My son-in-law is very gluten sensitive and many diners do not realize that some sauses include gluten. The kitchen makes special sauces for him each time he visits AND they remember when he comes in that he has a problem with gluten. This has become the family Asian restaurant. There are two others in Austin owned by the same family, but each is managed by a different brother. I can strongly recommend the one on Far West.

Excellent local establishment

Visited 2018-07-12 at 1800. Had Hot & Sour Soup and Spicy Orange Beef. Cost was $17.11 plus tip. Soup was rich and tasty. Serving size was good for one. The Spicy Orange Beef was a generous portion. it has an excellent, not overpowering, flavor. The beef was served with broccoli. I will repeat this dish after trying the many other offerings on their large menu. Staff was professional and friendly, and food delivery was quick. Interior was clean and well maintained. Hong, the manager, greeted her regular customers by name when they arrived.

Consistently excellent Chinese/Vietnamese food

This is our go-to place for Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. It's always good, convenient location on Far West, ample parking. Great for casual dine in or take out.

Nice neighborhood restaurant

By DuttaTx |

We usually do carry out. Friendly service, good tasting food and it is close to our house. Whenever I am sick with cold I normally order the hot and sour soup and the best I have eaten. We order the shrimp fried rice too and lots, and lots of shrimp. Their lo mein is really good. General chow's chicken is to die for. We love all of their dishes, no complain. Prices are resonable too.

Still the Best There Is!!!!!!

My wife and I ate here 3 times last week. We simply cannot get enough of this delicious food. Family run, wonderful service, and the best seasoned food you'll find anywhere. There is no place better in Austin.

Great for dine in or take out; great for G.F.

This little restaurant tucked in a strip center is very good. Went here for lunch for a friend's birthday today. In spite of the fact that they seemed very busy, and I only saw 2 wait staff working, they took care of everyone and no one seemed to feel that they waited too long. The young lady that took care of us was extremely helpful . Two of our diners are gluten-free and she knew exactly what they should order. She was so knowledgeable that they were even surprised. The hot and sour soup was raved about although I didn't have it. We each had one of the lunch specials and they were all good. Mine was chicken, shrimp, and broccoli, with choice of soup, rice and eggroll. They also were very amenable to splitting the bill. I'd definitely go back here.

Excellent family run place

I used to go there when it was near the UT campus. Delighted to find it now near my house. Family owned. Great selection of good Asian food, fair prices and good service.

Bad employee attitude is the worst.

By William J |

I am totally fine with the food in this restaurant. Nevertheless, when it comes to attitude of the employee serving customers, I could not just let it go. I called and said, "I would like 'to' order chicken in garlic sauce". I am assuming that the manager misheard me as "[to] two shrimp in garlic sauce". I am totally fine with all this kind of mistakes. But, apparently, the manager seems very unhappy when she learned that I only order chicken in garlic sauce. The worst thing is that I can hear rude voice from the chef in the kitchen about my order. After they have my order done, It appeared that they were assuming that I order 2 chicken in garlic sauce. I have no choice other than buying those 2 orders. Still, the manager has a very bad face expression and attitude toward me. This restaurant does not even deserve a star with this kind of attitude.

Superb egg foo young

By FunTraveler25 |

This restaurant is a real find. The food is wonderful and the staff is very welcoming. You have to try the egg foo young if that is one of your favorites.

incredible neighborhood restaurant

By Jerald M |

A true neighborhood, mom & pop Asian restaurant with food that would rival the best of Chinatown in New York or San Francisco. Entering Hao Q, you are greeted by a lovely, young woman, Hong, who makes this dining experience very special. You are not a stranger there for a meal, but rather a new friend or a family member coming to enjoy an outstanding meal. After dining here 2 or 3 times, Hong recognizes you, addressing you by your first name and remembering your favorites. When I walk in, she immediately alerts her chef/husband to start preparing the crispy duck, which is the best I have ever had! General Tso's chicken is wonderful, and the pho is authentic and very tasty. Great place to meet friends, family for excellent meal in a family like atmosphere!

The Very Best Chinese Food I Have Ever Eaten

By josephedward71 |

My wife, friends, and I eat here as often as we can. Quality is always superb. The food is so well seasoned, healthy, and prepared by a Master Chef. Service is top notch and prices are very reasonable. We are going there again tomorrow. I always choose to eat there on my birthday and on Father's Day. It is always a memorable dining experience!

I Eat Here At Least Twice (or more) Times a Month

By khwight |

Hao-Q Asian Kitchen is a great neighborhood place that features Chinese and Vietnamese dishes made fresh by the owner/chef. I love this place that it's not unusual for me to eat here once a week or, at least, several times a month. It's owned by Young & Hong Quach, a lovely couple that really brings the flavor to each and every dish. The menu features appetizers, soup, entrees, and an assortment of vegetarian dishes, all authentically crafted by Hong.

Good food, but unpleasant service

By BXC |

My review is based on phone order pickup, and not on actual seating at the restaurant. I know that a restaurant such as this could be very busy at times, but this does not justify a rude service. When I called to put in my order, the person on the line was short and impatient. The same person handed my the food when I came in to pick it up, and she hardly looked at me. She grabbed my credit card while taking another order on the line, and talking to a customer at the restaurant at the same time. When I said "thank you" and was going to leave, she completely ignored me as if I wasn't there. The food itself was good, although the portions look smaller than those of other competitors.

Food wasn't bad, but the service was apathetic

By danjan111 |

When I go and grab food at a restaurant, the reason I go generally is to get away and kind of enjoy myself in an atmosphere where I can be served. I happened upon this quaint little Asian restaurant in Austin, as I'm always excited to try out new places. I'll keep this review short and sweet. When I walked in, I was asked if I was solo, and rushed over to a little table even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. No real greeting, no Chit Chat, I was just told where to sit, and asked what I was going to drink. I kind of figured this was maybe just the host, as I was at an Asian restaurant, and this was an All-American looking kid. When the waitress came over, the interaction was so curt, it actually made me laugh out loud. She came over said and said what do you want, I asked her about a couple dishes and she gave nearly no response, and walked away without saying another word. I have to say, the meal was simple but very good. I had the lunch special with chicken and shrimp in garlic sauce, which came with an egg roll some rice and wonton soup. In general, not a bad meal. The problem is, there are tons of places out here that have decent Asian food. Service seems to make all the difference. When the check came, nothing changed. It was dropped off without a word, and when I left the card and the check was returned, it was also returned without a word. That was my experience. I came to a place to eat, and that's exactly all I got. If that's what you're looking for, enjoy! :-)

Tasty Chinese food

By KramerOn |

The hot and sour soup is as good as I've had anywhere. The vegetables in the fried rice were fresher than what you usually get. The orange beef had nice flavor and spice, and the garlic chicken was delicious. Our Kung pat chicken and flat beef noodles were ok. This was our third time here and we'll definitely be back!

Always fabulous!

We have eaten in and taken out multiple times over the past several years and have always had outstanding food and service! I usually have a hard time deciding between pho and a vermicelli bowl - both are delicious. Parking is easy! TIP: order the homemade hot mustard if you are getting eggrolls.

Very good lunch

By Mohsman |

This is a very good Chinese restaurants in Austin - it was picked for lunch by my brother who lives there and frequents it. The service was very attentive and all of the food very good. We shared the hot and sour soup - which I found had a bit too much vinegar; the orange chicken - which was very good; their special beef with black been sauce - which was good but not great; the chicken with green beans- which was good; and the spring rolls with peanut sauce - which I found ok but a bit too chewy. All in all a very good but not outstanding experience, IMO.

I've been going here for years

By falconfling1 |

and I always get a three and a half and occasionally the four star meal. In fact I went here when it was known as China Seas. This is a very good place with attentive and friendly staff and owners. I will continue to go here for a very good bowl of Pho or the occasional General Tso's. That said, I can only rate it as high average to the occasional very good. There are restaurants with more authentic ethnic food, and restaurants with cheaper food, and tastier food. Hao-Q is just an excellent combination of taste, price and service, and more often than not, you'll come away as a satisfied diner.

Great NW HILLS Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant

By Jim N |

Great lunch specials. Lots of chef specialties. Whether takeout or dine in, food is great. Owners are always there in the front and kitchen.

Best Restaurant in Austin!!!

By josephedward71 |

This is the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. I am in my 60s and have been to Chinese restaurants in Taipei, Hong Kong, Saigon, Vancouver, Toronto, San Francisco, and Chicago. The best places in all of these cities cannot hold a candle to Hao-Q. The flavor and seasoning are spectacular! The service is friendly and efficient. The prices are reasonable. The owners take the time to check on the needs of every table. The chef is highly skilled and very professional. Special requests? No problem. This is a family run business that does it right. My wife and I stop here every time we pass through Austin. 5 stars!!!! Joe P.

good quality basic Asian food

By Tova77 |

Have appreciated having this Asian food take-out restaurant nearby in Austin. Have used it very frequently and have always been served good basic Oriental food, a nice variety and selection available. Ample portions.

It's decent Chinese food

By dahughes |

We live close by to China Sea and it's a good family owned restaurant. The prices are reasonable and they have a selection of foods to choose from. There are other fantastic Chinese restaurants out there, but for the location, it's a good place to go too.

Nice Neighborhood Place

By Pearl M |

I'm not an expert on Asian food but I found the food at Hao-Q to be very tasty. I especially liked the fried rice (you have the option of fried or boiled rice with most dinners) and the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Service was very good and the hostess was most welcoming. Entrees are large enough to share easily and I found prices to be reasonable.

Good Enough But Not Great

By SweetSmiley |

I'm really surprised by the high marks of the other reviewers. Maybe we didn't get the right dishes for the meal to be exemplary. The restaurant is in a strip center in a nice NW Austin neighborhood. Everything was very clean and the service was friendly and terrific. We tried a few different dishes: Beef and broccoli, Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp, Lemon Chicken, and fried pork dumplings. The dumplings were magnificent...everything else, not so much. The beef and kung pao dish were incredibly salty and had to be combined with a bunch of steamed rice to balance the salty sauce and be edible. The lemon chicken was essentially deep fried nuggets in a little lemon sauce. The chicken was too fried and a little dry. We tried all the standard soups that are served with lunch: Wonton soup was tasty but had a weird fish sauce smell, Hot and Sour was too sour, egg drop was OK. Nothing was really horrible, but nothing really stood out except the dumplings. If I go back, I will definitely ask for very little or no sauce to be able to enjoy the food. And of course get more dumplings :-).
