Fabulous food , great staff , lively atmosphere. Wendy really looked after us and we had a great evening at Harry Caray’s

Great steak Well looked after

Great steak Well looked after - and proper treat for those using the Gents toilets - fun. Not a cheap night but worth it

Chicago steakhouse with costly extras

By Susan M |

The steak was good and cooked to order and the service was prompt and courteous. The atmosphere reflected that of a Chicago steakhouse, busy and masculine in decor. I was disappointed in the pricing as all sides were extra. Expensive for an 8 ounce filet.

Transport yourself to prohibition Chicago

By Markymisfit |

We were first aware of Harry Caray's a year ago when we stayed opposite at a nearby hotel, but didn't venture in. This year, we were on a crime & mob tour (excellent!) that stopped for a look at some fascinating prohibition era artefacts and newspaper articles (and also some bootleggers tunnels!!). The buidling was once owned by Frank Nitti, no.2 to Al Capone so has some amazing history. We came back for some beer and homemade kettle chips which are to die for! Then we made a third visit with some friends for the full meal experience. The service was excellent here, and the food was fab too! Be ready for a proper Chicago portion - all the main courses were sumptuous and delicious. Spaghetti meatballs, white fish stuffed with crab meat and a chicken with fine pasta dish all got rave reviews from the diners! The photos of all the great and good that have visited (from presidents to film stars) is a fun added bonus. Visit when you're in town, if only for a drink - it's worth it!

Great evening

By robert k |

This is a large restaurant with different large compartments and it was very crowded, the staff was really attentive and gave follow up to our arrival, the service was perfect! We had great appetizers, calamari, arancini and eggplant veggie dishes, we had the New York strip dry aged, and it was cooked to perfection, even the bread and oil was great, this was an excellent experience with great food and atmosphere

Great place!

By not@work |

Service was wonderful, our waiter was funny, personable and very attentive. Atmosphere was good, nice restaurant. The food was fantastic! Some of us had pasta and some had steak. No complaints from anyone. We did make reservations. I am so glad we ate here and I can’t wait to go back to Chicago so we can eat there again!!

Great food! Great ambiance

By Gmcarguy |

Excellent food and service. Chicken was soft and tender, soup was amazing. Bartender was very attentive. They claim to have the best chicken Vesuvio in the city for good reason

Nice but!!

By Terry B |

We were visiting Chicago for three nights and booked here for valentines night. Having read the reviews we were looking forward to our evening given the history of the building and food on offer. I must say that food nice but wasn’t as good as we had expected and the service was pretty poor at times as the waiter had forgotten to ask all of us our order and didn’t really take any interest in us once we had ordered not like other restaurants we had visited in other major city restaurants.

A classic restaurant combining elegant dining with Harry's love of the game

By Disneybus |

My wife and I, traveling from New Jersey, loved our evening at Harry's. The ambiance incorporated Harry's love of the game, as made evident by walls adorned with photos and historical baseball memorabilia, with a feeling of the underground of a bygone Chicago period. The waitstaff were all professional and took pride in their work by delivering top efficient service. Our server Fernando was no exception. Our dinners were great; I enjoyed a cup of Italian Wedding while my wife started with a caprese. All our courses were nicely plated and delivered to order. My wife got a tasty Bolognese while I was treated to an outstanding 14oz pork chop. In between courses, I chatted with another waiter, whose name I missed, who has proudly been with the operation many years; he told us about Harry and all the players that came into the restaurant over the years. We talked baseball and he pointed out the photo of my favorite team as a kid - the Brooklyn Dodgers. I even learned where Harry sat near the entry so he could view the patrons. If you're a fan, this place is just as much a museum as an exceptional dining establishment. Further, the bygone Chicago period feel is true, as the basement was found to be Frank Nitti's underground network - on display!

A must!

By arturogutierrez |

Amazing experience when visiting downtown Chicago! We stayed at the Hotel Chicago and this happened to be on the same block! Great find with tons of celebrity pictures and amazing service! Food was really good, ambiance and great wine!

Outstanding dinner

By AlfredoMartin |

About 30 of our business colleagues came for dinner at Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse. We had a great time with outstanding food and service. Salad was fresh and steak was cooked to perfection. Service was prompt and friendly. The restaurant is beautiful with outstanding decor. A great experience!

Eat at the River North Location, NOT at Midway Airport

By SueLovesDuke |

We eaten calamari at many places around the globe but this was the best! We ate at this place because it was right across the street from our hotel and we wanted to have a few drinks in the bar and get a snack. The calamari was so TENDER and cooked to order. It was so good that the next day when we were at Midway Airport waiting to fly home, we ordered the same thing at the Harry Caray's there and the calamari was HORRIBLE! It was like any chain restaurant: frozen, sliced too thin, and overcooked. What a disappointment.

You wouldn't expect Harry to do anything less, would you?

By Taylor B |

Harry Caray isn't sitting at the bar any longer, kibitzing with his legion of fans. But his name is on the building, and on seven other restaurant/bar locations in the Chicago area, and the classy Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster wouldn't expect anything less than a home run from his favorite team. That's what you get at Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse at 33 West Kinzie Avenue, at Dearborn, in the River North neighborhood, in the shadow of Trump Tower. Described as "the best steakhouse in Chicago" by one noted critic, it is an old-fashioned setting filled with sports memorabilia. In fact, a picture of this retired Chicago sportswriter is hanging on one of the walls. But this restaurant/bar is a tribute to Harry Caray, who lit up every room he ever walked into. He loved this restaurant, which was within walking distance of his hotel apartment on Chicago's Gold Coast. A visit to Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse is an adventure, a treat, a joyful experience, a must for every tourist. On our most recent visit, we started with tomato bruschetta, a colossal shrimp cocktail, Italian meatballs and Caesar salad. For an entree, my wife opted for whitefish with toasted garlic, fresh oregano and baby spinach. I couldn't resist one of the house's specialties, Harry's chicken Vesuvio, called "best in the city" one one food critic, which features boneless chicken breast, quartered potatoes, sweet peas, garlic and white wine. For dessert, we shared large portions of key lime pie with walnut graham cracker crust and whipped cream and another house specialty, Harry's tiramisu, with Espresso and Grand Marnier soaked Ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and powdered sugar. Harry Caray lived, ate and drank well and Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse River North does him proud.

Client Dinner

By Paul B |

A Chicago gem, traditional steaks and Italian food. Steaks are perfectly cooked and prepared. Twice baked potato, asparagus, Mac and cheese, traditional cream broccoli all excellent. Salads huge and you can share. Incredible service (thanks Tweed) and staff. Great deserts. Overall a great meal and recommend.

Great food! Great Restaurant

By Joe C |

We visited here one evening, it is in a nice location around a block from the river. The restaurant is large, and nicely decorated with a huge amount of memorabilia and famous photographs. We were promptly seated and greeted by a friendly server who helped us decide from the menu. We opted for the famous Chicken Vesuvio and Beef Ragu Tagliatelle. We were provided some very tasty bread for the table which we asked for more of, as it was just so good! Both entrees were of good size, very tasty and we thoroughly enjoyed them both. For dessert we opted for the Key Lime Cheesecake which was also scrumptious. Service was quick, food was really good, atmosphere for a Saturday night was nice, not too quiet – but not too loud, we would highly recommend this place!

Czech tour de Chicago

By Karolína Č |

Very nice and cozy place with great atmosphere and even better food!!! This was our first visit in Chicago and we definitely recommed this place!

Good food but noisy atmosphere

By Frank S |

The food and service was very good but the restaurant was very noisy which degrades the dining experience. Prices are moderate and my server was very attentive.

A must diner if you’re a baseball fan.

By Jeffrey M |

In town visiting the city and to see the Braves play at Wrigley. We always pick a nice place to have dinner when we are visiting the ballparks. If you are a baseball fan this is a must. Good food but pricy. Steaks are alacart, but good. A lot of memorabilia and I hope you get the Harry Caray impersonator as your waiter. I had a blast here!!!!

Amazing food and service

By Bill_Texas931 |

Phenomenal steaks and appetizers. I have to single out Lupe our server for his attentiveness and incredible service. Would come back here again.....maybe even tomorrow!!!

Great Steak & Service

By Sarah |

We had a very good experience here. The wait time was decent and the staff was very attentive and friendly. My spaghetti noodles were a little too tough for my liking, but everything else was good. The bread and oil was great, and so was the steak. The eggplant parmigiana was "amazing." Of course it's on the expensive side, but it's definitely worth the price.

Excellent Holiday Dinner

By LorriAnn S |

Our family came for dinner after attending a holiday show. As usual, the Christmas decor was lovely and added to the holiday ambiance. Our server Carlos Leon was excellent. His helper Miguel was great. Our group of 7 ordered 8 different appetizers and found the calamari, meatballs and mozzarella wedges to be very tasty. The bruchetta was served on a platter from which you had to construct your own (not a fan of that) and was fresh. Dinners varied from pasta to filet mignon, to surf and turf, to chicken vesuvio, lasagna and a seafood special. No one was disappointed. We were sad to see the Dutchie Salad option was no longer on the menu, but there were many options from which to choose. The desserts were wonderful!! This place never disappoints.

Excellent Food, Calamari to die for

By LHinkle |

I read dozens of reviews before a trip to Chicago, ending up with a restaurant close to my hotel- Harry Caray’s. I picked it because I’m a calamari tourist, and so many reviews mentioned this dish. I look for good calamari everywhere I travel. Holy cow, this one did not disappoint. I think it was the most tender calamari I’ve ever had. I highly recommend it. My party also had the whitefish oreganato, chicken Vesuvio, and charred broccoli side; all of them were excellent, with rich flavor and cooked perfectly. Add a reasonable bottle of wine and a dessert to go, and you’ve got a memorable meal in downtown Chicago,

Holy Cow! The food was good.

By joeF_10 |

We recently visited Chicago and this was on our must see list. The original is located at the former residence of Chicago mobster Frank Nitti and the restaurant has some memorabilia such as his address book with the name of mobsters and politicians. Of course, the restaurant is full of baseball and Harry Caray memorabilia...over the walls, on the ceiling, and even a holey cow. The food was excellent (bring your wallet) and the service was high class without being condescending. I had the special lamb chops which were perfectly cooked....surprisingly three large chops were served. There is a large variety of wine, beer and cocktails....so sit back and splurge.

Last night in Chicago dinner

By Denise Scott |

Loved the atmosphere and food was delicious!! Our waiter was great and very accommodating! Drinks were outstanding. Can’t wait to come back next trip!

Sports Memorabilia and Excellent Italian Food

By SuzeBrowardCounty_FL |

Boyfriend is a sports nut and wanted to eat here while we were visiting Chicago. He loved all the memorabilia-filled walls. We enjoyed the food as much as the memorabilia. Lupe brought us our drink order to start. Loved the waiters’ uniforms embroidered with their names and the cloth tablecloths. We started with the fried calamari- tender as can be and to the table hot. Then we enjoyed a crispy wedge salad with blue cheese and bacon- yum. Next we shared a beef lasagna, prepared like my momma’s with plenty of ground beef, mozzarella and ricotta. No room left for dessert. After dinner we went down to “the vault” , then took pictures around the bust of Harry Cary. Very good Italian food. Fun atmosphere.

Fantastic Filet

By Breber17 |

Have been here a couple of times on business - Chicago tradition. This last time was probably my favorite - ordered the filet and it was extremely tender and tasty. The sides are all alacarte and delicious. The truffle potatoes are a stand-out! Service was excellent. Give this Chicago favorite a try!

Crispy Ravioli

By Marmite |

Crispy Ravioli. Worth the trip for that. Seriously, have a drink at the bar and split one. It’s awesome. No idea about the restaurant or entrees but if you want a really good salt it earth seated at bar food while watching a sports; this is your place.

Fabulous Dinner

By cherylpd1 |

We (3 of us) had a fabulous dinner, complete with drinks and dessert (including a surprise birthday dessert for me; so embarrassing as the waiters sang to me)! We all chose the 8 oz filet, and wedge salads to start (so good)! While the sides are ala carte and additionally priced, we shared garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. Our waiter was great; very entertaining, and he took the time to explain certain things to us. We had a quite leisurely dinner, and we were quite stuffed! This was one of the must-stops on our Chicago visit, and I'd recommend anyone to try it at least once.

Great dinner

By 1GiantsMSo |

Went for dinner after Giants/White Sox game and very pleased. Carlos was our server and very professional. The Justin Cabernet was good and the Blood Orange Manhattan was perfect. The Caprese was tasty. 12 oz filets with corn brulee and mushrooms were delicious. Very convenient walking distance from our hotel. Suggest leaving time to explore all the historic pictures on the walls.

Historic Building with great food.

By Martin G |

Situated within a historic setting in downtown Chicago, this place is full of character and old world gangster charm. Mainly sports memorabilia but if you look hard enough there is plenty of reference to the Chicago past. The food is great, with excellent steaks and seafood. We also had loads of sides and a couple of bottles of wine all served by our waiters who look very much like old-school eatery guys in long aprons and server jackets. Definitely a great spot for dining.

Good meal but pricey

By Jackie M |

Service was excellent and we were seated right away arriving about 5 minutes before our reservation time. All 3 of us had steak for dinner and it was cooked to our requested doneness perfectly. My husband and I had the charred broccoli and garlic mashed potatoes as a side and although we enjoyed our dinner, it wasn’t the “best ever”. No complaints whatsoever with food or service but for the price, it wasn’t melt in your mouth good. The restaurant had great decor and atmosphere. Loved all the baseball and celebrity photos.

Enjoyable

By TK S |

In the area and stopped in for a lunch on a Sunday, seating was available in the bar area. Greated promptly greeted and provided with homemade chips. I ordered the Chicken Versuvio and it was amazing, tender, juicy and flavorful. Our service was very good and we purchased some Harry Caray trinkets while we were there. Very glad we happened upon this restaurant!

Incredibile meal

By jimcos54 |

We dine out a lot & have been to many very fine restaurants in South Florida, where we live, as well as around the country. I really have to say that dinner at Harry Carey’s Italian Steakhouse is one of the best we’ve ever had. Italian Wedding soup-delicious, home made. Fried calamari-most tender ever! Excellent Caesar salad. My NY strip w gorgonzola was more delicious & tender than any steak I’ve ever had. My wife’s chicken Marsala was outstanding, and finally our dessert-creme broulee was exquisite. Our server was great-knowledgeable, efficient & never rushed us. I was so impressed that I called over the manager to praise all of the above. He was just as impressive as the food & service-very appreciative & friendly & took his time chatting with us. Make sure you go downstairs to see mobster Frank Nitti’s hideout in the basement of the historic building housing the restaurant.

Take me out........

By Ed R |

"Holy Cow". What a great find. We met a couple at a roof top bar. They said they were going somewhere else and if we wanted to go with them. Sure, why not. This was so unexpected and last minute. When we walked in, the place was amazing. We've been to a few of these types of restaurants, Shannon's in St Louis, Mantals in Oklahoma, and they are never a good as you hope. This is the exception. The history behind this place is like no other. Everywhere you looked, there were pictures of every famous person you could ever know. I hoped that the food was as awesome. Our waiter was MATT, and he talked like and copied Harry Caray. He was great. Our new friends got the chicken parm and a filet. My wife ordered the filet mignon, and i got the chicken vesuvio. We got our food, and once again, my dish was the most interesting one. A whole chicken, bone in, tender, and full of flavor. I had to give everyone a taste. They all loved it and were as amazed as I was. Everyone said their meal was good, though mine was the best. Very unexpected. This place was awesome. For baseball nuts like we are, this is a fantastic place to come to. Even if it's just to look around. I had a ball looking at pictures and history. This is a must for anyone who is a fan and for those who don't know anything about Harry Caray and Chicago baseball. I will be back. I recommend highly.

An excellent venue, beautiful food and terrific staff.

By Dave |

We are out of town visitors, and this restaurant came highly recommended. We were not disappointed either. Tweed - our server; was incredible and we received accurate descriptions of the meals, local beers and our deserts. The food was without fault and the whole evening was a great success. Thank-you Harry Caray's!

Large portions

By Cathy L |

You might want to think about sharing! We started with a Caesar Salad. Good balance in the dressing We had the Chicken parmigiana with red sauce and meatballs with red sauce. The chicken came with two breast! It was cooked perfectly. The meatballs were very meaty, not a lot of filler. Some of the best pasta I’ve ever eaten. The bread was soooo go. No room for desserts. The prices are reasonable.

Anniversary Dinner

By Tim Anderson |

It's lost a good bit of its' original luster. Food overpriced and overcooked. Servers much to eager to "turn a table" and the noise was something that wouldn't have been tolerated just a few years ago. Would not recommend.

We went for Tiramisu

By srnflamingo |

We wanted dessert, specifically Tiramisu. We ended up with food, wine and Tiramisu. Great food. Helpful wait staff. I would highly recommend this place, especially if you are looking for Italian food.

A Nice "Chicago" Experience

By PJA070413 |

Especially if you are a big sports fan, Harry Caray's is worth considering for dinner. Lots of celebrity photos and sports memories adorn the walls, along with screens playing films of historic Cubs games. The food service was really fast on the weeknight we dined there (although our waiter seemed somewhat indifferent and had to be hailed down several times). I thought the food was good, but would rate more highly two other meals I had in town (Lou Malnati's for deep dish pizza and Miss Ricky's). Still, I enjoyed the wedding soup, and the eggplant parm was well prepared and tasty. The Pappardelle Bolognese was a bit too spicy and, for me at least, different from more Italian tomato-based sauces. Wine by the glass in Chicago runs between $16-18, and at that price the Duckhorn Red Blend disappointed - so I recommend you try another red. The tiramisu for dessert was excellent. Like a lot of celebrity restaurants, I think this place tends to cater to famous people who are in town. I would not rate it a 5, but it was a pretty good dinner, and I was glad to have tried it for the sports history and "Chicago" experience.

FUN PLACE

By lindamD5059ZB |

Food was fantastic (I had shrimp scampi, huge portion, my husband had filet Osca, he said the meat was good, did not care for the Oscar sauce), service was great. Great atmosphere. Not too expensive.

Good Food

By DriveAllNight |

We both weren’t all that hungry so we both just had the Fettuccine Alfredo which was quite tasty. Probably a very enjoyable place to go if you are a sports fanatic!

Good food plus warm and friendly atmosphere = a good time

By Bon-Voyage-747 |

This is a great place to come for a holiday dinner. The restaurant is decorated beautifully and the staff are warm and friendly. The food is good too! We go once a year when in town for the holidays and it always delivers. I didn’t try the baseball dessert but that looked like it was a lot of fun too.

Great steak in a great atmosphere

By Katherine A |

Harry Caray's Steakhouse is the perfect place to end a day of sightseeing in Chicago. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming. (You don't feel out of place in sneakers or a little more dressed up.) The staff is professional, friendly and accommodating. Make sure to start with calamari and fried ravioli, and the brussel sprouts are a must. The steaks are great and they have a Kansas City strip, which you can't find very many places. Make sure to end the evening with the baseball dessert - its great to share and its such a conversation starter!

Steakhouse in downtown Chicago, IL

By ransom007 |

If you are driving there are several pay-to-park facilities in the area. The restaurant bills itself as an Italian, steakhouse, and seafood establishment. It has a classy atmosphere. I visited on a Sunday morning and only the bar area was open. One problem in there is that the seating is only bar stools and high tables (except for 1 low table which is obviously intended to accommodate a large party). There is full bar service and several televisions. The service was good and my "seafood" Cobb salad (2 jumbo shrimp = seafood) was good but a little small for the price.

Chicago 2020

By Veronica |

Great atmosphere and food! Variety on menu and right in the heart of Chicago. The employees are very attentive and very welcoming.

Chicago trip

By Katzakatz |

Steak (filet) was amazing - also meatballs appetizer… the food and bar drinks a 5 … waiter could have more personality and be more attentive

Holy cow!

By cincygumdoc |

Comfortable dining environment with a nice menu selection. The service was also delivered at a high level. The homemade bread was excellent.

Great Gluten free steakhouse option!

By SDMOMCT |

Excellent meal! Great food and two of us are gluten free! Staff was knowledgeable about GF meals and menu was marked. Food came out with GF toothpicks too. Highly recommend for a fun & tasty Chicago steak house experience.

A Must Do In Chicago!

By Te |

Excellent experience. Our server, Lupe, was fantastic. Gave great drink and meal recommendations. The food was fabulous! As ordered, hot, and delicious. Type made our experience extra special! Thank you, Lupe!

OK

By tarektabbara |

Positives: staff and service - Carlos was great, memorabilia, some items were tasty like the calamari and broccoli Negatives: too dark, steak was very mediocre. I asked for medium-well and got well done. It was good, but nothing special for the price paid. If you want very good steak I'm not sure if this is the place. I guess if you're from Chicago and like the Cubs I can understand, but as a tourist like me, you won't get who Harry Caray is and why he has a steakhouse worth going to.

History and a great meal.

By stilts16 |

History and a great meal. Business dinner upstairs. The dinner room had a speak easy and host provided the historic background of the building. Good food and enjoyable learning more about Chicago.

Not just for steak

By Boogiechln |

We ate here early evening on a Friday and the place was very busy. Nonetheless, the waitstaff was very attentive. My family of five started with a salad and fried mozzarella. The salad was very good and the cheese was excellent. Perfect temperature for full gooeyness. The accompanying sauce burst with flavor. We ordered 4 different chicken dishes and a pasta. All 4 chicken dishes were fantastic. The pasta was good but not on par with the poultry. Finally, we orders tiramisu for dessert. It was truly the highlight of the night. It was the best we had ever tasted. I’ll go so far as to say it was one of the top desserts I’ve ever had. The ambiance was great as well. You feel like you have stepped back in time as it is pure old school Chicago. It also has a ton of baseball memorabilia related to its namesake. Overall a great place to visit and enjoy a tasty meal.

Food good, service underground bad

By seebeach1 |

The restaurant was well attended and accordingly a bit noisy. That didn't bother us. What was disturbing, however, was the attitude of the service employee. From the beginning we were stressed by our dinner and after placing our order we were more or less ignored. It was not even possible to order a second beer because we suddenly became “invisible”. The food was good, but I wouldn't go there with this underground service.

Best wait staff in town

By Keith |

Aside from the food being prepared properly and tasting great, the wait staff far exceed any other restaurant in Chicago. They love their jobs and it is clearly evident! They are very familiar with each item as offered on the extensive menu. Prices are quite fair and nothing is too expensive compared to other facilities. It is not over-crowded with adequate space between tables and the noise level is moderate. Valet service was quite reasonable and expeditious as well. Out of towers who love baseball will be very impressed with all manner of baseball memorabilia. However, this applies to locals as well. It is a virtual museum of baseball history, particularly those of which the late great broadcaster Harry Carey was affiliated with. I rate it an easy Five Star facility.

Holiday weekend

By CDarrett |

Chicago was a busy place this weekend. It was the first warm weather and the holiday weekend. There were tons of people out and I would not have known it eating at this restaurant. As busy as they were we were still able to get a reservation on short notice. We were seated immediately. And I loved the history of the place. The staff were mature and courteous as if they had been long time employees. The food was great but my favorite part was the treatment we received from our waiter. He treated us like royalty.

Don't waste your money

By Darlene S |

On our last night in Chicago, we were told the place to go for a great meal was Harry Carays. Boy were we misled. We ordered the fettuccine with shrimp. The pasta was hard and rubbery. Like it was over heated in a microwave. We told our server . His response would you like us to redo it. Not certain what that would entail. Put it back in the microwave? I would think something better could have been done . We have been here for a week and have eaten at many fabulous places. Rock bottom fabulous. Maggianos perfection. To name a couple We won't be back to Harry Carays , McDonald's would be a better choice atleast there you know what your getting. If I could give them zero stars I would.

Afternoon Snack

By ak2398 |

Stopped for an afternoon snack and beverage, it was quite busy on the bar side. We opted for open seating in the bar rather than experience the steakhouse and dining area. My husband had draft beer and I tried the Navy Pear martini with Elderflower liqueur. It was just ok, I expected different. We ate Harry’s Calamari appetizer; it was delicious! Enormous sided pieces, tender and crispy. The potato chips you receive complimentary, were just ok as well, cool/cold and not very flavorful, however nice to be offered a complimentary item.

Absolutely incredible

By ThatBGuye |

This is a truly can't miss place. Had a business dinner and everyone's meal was absolutely incredible. Great service. Don't miss.

Wonderful dinner

By Donna H |

5/5 The best restaurant ever. We sat in the bar area and enjoyed cocktails. I had the best Espresso Martini that I’ve ever had. The service was excellent. We then ordered dinner and that was also excellent. My husbands bone in ribeye was excellent and my rigatoni ala vodka was delicious! All in all one of the best dinners we’ve had in a long time!

Over hyped for average food

By tharp10 |

Average and no more. Food, service, atmosphere - all just average. For the price I wish I would’ve picked someplace less hyped up. I had shrimp scampi which was pretty bland with over cooked shrimp. My boyfriend had steak, which was fine, but honestly not great. We also had the charred broccoli which was sadly better than the main dishes. It also felt like our waiter was rushing us, which I found annoying as there were plenty of open tables. The table of drunk 20 year olds in the corner did provide some good dinner entertainment though. Lol. I would not go back.

Good food usually good service but not tonight

By Seaside320835 |

Food was good but I overheard a very rude petite blond haired server talking about her customers. She should be removed. Really unprofessional. Not sure I'd offer this as a referral any more after this poor behavior from staff.

Nice lunch

By Judi W |

We made a lunch reservation and enjoyed the restaurant. It is in a old building with a really cool long bar. They brought home made potato chips which were delicious. I had a very good meatball sub.

Old School Gem

By Pilar and mark K |

We are a retired couple, one of whom spent graduate school years in Chicago back in the day when Harry Carey was alive and all over the place! Neither of us are steak eaters but someone had said 'go for the Italian food' and we gave it a try on a busy saturday night. The service was great, attentive but not obtrusive. The food (Chicken vesuvio and Eggplant Parm) was excellent and the setting was totally throw back (which is good). Many people around us ordered steaks, as this is a steak house but don't be afraid to go if you just want traditional Italian classics.

You have to go!!!!

By DeannaTroi |

My husband has always talked about this restaurant and I finally had the opportunity to visit. The food was terrific and the service was top notch!! Thank you Joe!!! Would go back in a sec!!!

So nice came back twice

By Visit DrunkPhotography.com |

I landed in Chitown and forgot to eat the whole day so I wanted to get a great, filling meal in, and this came up as a top spot to go to, which thankfully was open on President's day. The first day I had the Mac N Cheese with a 12oz Filet Mignon and it was extremely good, very juicy! Really hit the spot. Few days later, I told the gang to come over to enjoy it and we went crazy on that menu. The calamari is really as good as they say, it's probably the best calamari I've ever had, seriously, it's not that tiny, rubbery stuff, it's really nicely done! On the second trip, I had the Tenderloin Linguine and it was off the chains! The service is amazing as well, very polite, attentive and very fast. Make sure to go check out the Frank Nitty vault.

Excellent Dinner, Venue, Service & Value

By Nick L |

An amazing dinner, better than expected given the many high end steak & resto options in Chicago. We spent day 1 before at a much more expensive steakhouse that we also truly enjoyed, but wanted to ‘turn it down a notch’ price wise. Well, we couldnt have made a better decision. There was good availability and plenty of seating options for our 645p reso. The decor and history is definitely interesting both as a sports fan and a mob/mafia buff. Lots to see with memorabilia posted everywhere. Service with Lupe was excellent. He explained the various dishes, checked with is often and did not rush us - something mentioned often at various restos especially with a seating for two. Water glasses were kept full at all times. We ordered the 14oz pepper crusted NY, side sausage pasta and chicken vesuvio. Chose the side pasta as i was undecided between steak & pasta mains, so had both! Steak was amazing (I’m a very picky & frequent steak eater). Chicken V was also excellent. Has the breast version but would probably choose the 1/2 chicken version next time. Pasta was as good as ever. We would order all three dishes again, no question. However, there was a lot of food and given we were travelling, couldn’t take it with us. Value wise, cannot beat it. Its not the cheapest but when the equivalent steak the day before and at other higher end places, is U$80 vs U$62, thats great value. After dinner, you can take a walk downstairs to view the mob hit man's original vault and escape tunnel. One small nit. We were first seated in a walk thru table. Asked for a change and initially, the one hostess seem perturbed by our request, despite there being plenty of tables avail. The Mgr or guy walking around as such, came to check and found us a great spot, without any attitude. Overall, excellent dinner, service and venue. Will definitely be back next time in Chicago.

Highly recommended.

Lovely interesting building. Amazing service. Great food. You could not have asked for more! The broccoli soup was soooo good! The steak sandwich amazing and my husband loved his burger.

Would have expected a far better experience for the price of this meal

By Gene S |

We had been here once before for dessert a year ago and based upon that experience decided to come back for a full meal. We looked at the menu online ahead of time and saw Filet Oscar on one menu but not another. My wife called and spoke to Giana (sp?) who said that they could serve that including the Bearnaise sauce which was the key thing about this menu item. Upon arriving we placed our orders including Filet Oscar and mentioned that we spoke to Giana a few hours earlier who said it could be made. A little while later a gentlemen came out and said it could not be ordered and asked my wife to choose a different item. She selected the seafood cobb salad and moments later all of our food came out, included her original filet with no crab meat and no sauce. We explained that we didn't order a plain filet and that it was replaced with a different item. The server seemed confused and left. Moments later the same gentlemen who earlier came out to tell we needed to order a different item asked what the confusion was about seemingly confused as if he didn't remember he was just out 10 minutes prior to tell us we had to order a different menu item. 5 minutes after that the salad came out and we ate our meal. We were also there for a birthday, and once we finished they brought us out a complementary slice of cheesecake. We all ordered dessert and our waiter offered to swap out the complimentary cheesecake for the birthday person's requested dessert. It was a nice gesture and we ordered the gelato to replace the cheesecake. The desserts came out and there was two pieces of tort, but no gelato. The waiter came back a bit later to see how were were doing and took away the extra tort and brought out the gelato. Overall the food was good, but the level of service, mistakes, and delays caused by the mistakes really affected the pace and quality of the meal. We constantly had to ask for more water which should be anticipated in a place of this caliber. When you see empty glasses, bring more water. It's not a hard concept to grasp. Also, with COVID restrictions we chose to eat outside, and while specifically not the restaurant's fault, we were accosted twice during our meal by people asking for money. Maybe it's me, but with restaurants running at less than full capacity and fewer people willing to go out to eat, I would have expected top notch service to ensure we had an experience that would have wanted us to come back and help ensure they stay at capacity and this meal fell way short of that expectation.

You Have Just Gotta Visit

By David M |

Lunch or dinner. Food and drinks or just drinks this is a great restaurant and bar in the River North area of downtown Chicago. Bartenders are very professional and very knowledgeable and friendly. The bar area is so friendly and the staff make it feel like you are at home even if you are 4,000 miles away. The food is excellent and can be had in either the restaurant or in the bar.

Good food

By Victoria R |

Good food - my tagliatelle alla bolognese was very tasty and my husband declared his chicken Vesuvio to be delicious. We left a decent tip (yes, we are British but we know 20% is a minimum expectation), only to see our waiter shake his head when opening the check to see how much we'd left. It was good, but it wasn't exceptional!

Amazing service, great steaks and alright spaghetti

By Jason Homey |

We came here for our pre-marathon carbo-loading meal. Our service was stellar. Several people ordered steak and that was the best thing we had. It had very good flavor and was cooked perfectly. I had the spaghetti and meatballs and it was just ok. It was almost al dente which isn’t my style and the meatballs were just ok, maybe even a little hard. There is a lot of old memorabilia there so it’s fun to look around the restaurant.

I'd suggest to give it a miss

By calvino |

To be fair, the food was pretty good. I had a wedge salad and a flatiron steak. Also a cocktail, and all three tipped the needle to the right. My problem is the experience. First, this is not a welcoming space, it's Old Spaghetti Factory heavily-used surplus. But that, I can live with. What annoyed me was being hurried. My salad arrived when I'd barely tasted my drink, my steak arrived halfway through my salad, the bill arrived while I was still eating. Look, I m spending more than $80 per per person, so I expect to be able to relax and not feel like I'm p&$!ing off the waitstaff. So my suggestion to the reader is to find somewhere else. Or take the food to go.

Lunch with Family.

Food very good. Service was super. Waitperson checked back often to ensure we were enjoying our lunch. I would highly recommend going here for lunch or dinner.

This Long-Time Favorite is Slipping

By Smudgecats |

I've been eating here since Harry was alive and would greet diners from his table in the main dining room. Last two times, disappointing. This is one of the few restaurants in town that serve the bone-in Kansas City Strip, a favorite of mine. The last two visits, the $59.95 steak (a la carte) has come tough. An expensive steak done medium should cut easily, not like an Outback cheapie. Atmosphere still good. Servers still friendly. Drink pours still generous. But the steaks were not up to steakhouse standards.

Gluten free pasta

Went before the Chicago marathon to carb load! We loved the pasta and desserts! Loved it! Would highly recommend! Will be coming back next time I’m in Chicago

Don’t waste your money

By 855conniep |

Really such a disappointment. Steak is amazing, however our server seemed to care less about our dining experience. Table never got cleared, our appetizers arrived and we were still holding our menus, there was no room at the table to put our menus while we ate. Ordered a bottle of wine and it was the wrong bottle, no tasting offered, so it wasn’t caught until we began drinking it. Everything but the steak was just mediocre. The server honestly ruined our dining experience for us.

Great food ok service

By JimmyD51961 |

We had been in here on a Crime Bus Tour and decided to go to dinner before or musical. The food was extremely good. Service was good, not great. The history of the building is worth the visit but the food is an added bonus.

VIP Table

By winks1996 |

We sat at the VIP table which was nice. We had NY strip steaks and they were delicious. Our son had the rigatoni pasta and he said it was the best he had ever eaten.

Eggplant parmigiana not a good choice

By travlinf0rw0rk |

Eggplant parmigiana was a special so we ordered as an appetizer- blah...Trader Joe’s frozen is better.. worst old fashions (brandy) ever. Top notch steaks. Friendly wait staff that removed the drinks from the bill after we couldn’t drink them. Would I go back? No.. too many places with top quality everything in Chicago.

don’t hesitate, go!

By ViviTelAviv |

great food, great service. the restaurant is set in a building once awned by Nitti, the book keeper of Al Capon, and you can see his volt and secret basement .. very pictoresque ambiance with many photos of Harry Caray with very famous people.

Kind of disappointed

By Paul F |

First let me start by saying the staff was very friendly. I sat at a table in the bar area- waitress was very friendly. They start you off with complimentary homemade chips which were delicious. I ordered chicken marsala- it did not come over pasta, and was actually kind of bland. I was surprised because I thought at a steakhouse in a city it must be fantastic- but it was just "ok".

Nice Italian Restaurant

By Ricmar60 |

We found that the food at this place was very good. Service was quick and friendly. In addition to serving food, this restaurant has all kinds of interesting things on display. Even the building has an interesting history. After dinner we spent a bit of time taking in the things on display. Next time we are in Chicago, we will be going back.

Harry Caray's is a great local place to have steak or Italian food. The staff is very helpful and friendly with a very good selection of different foods. You can not go wrong with anything you order from the menu. The place has a great bar to enjoy after a great meal. Enjoy!!

Great experience

By bkat |

Walking into Harry Carey’s feels like you are walking. Into a restaurant in the 20s. Upscale yet relaxed, it is a great experience. You can easily split an Italian dish w a tablemate. The cost is relative to the experience Make sure you walk the place and see some of the memorabilia including the ball that Steve Bateman caught. Also in the rear of the bar is a stairway and displays showing secret passageways used by the mafia that they only uncovered a few years ago

Service, atmosphere and tasty food!

By Lazza66 |

Here in Chicago on business, plenty of places around ORD.... make your choice Harry Caray's. In the middle of the week they have a vibrant atmosphere of locals and, like me, a business traveler. Service was excellent by Steve and his colleagues (photo). Enjoyed the calamari and chopped chicken salad (recommended). ENJOY!

The best place we visited and ate at in Chicago. Fact.

By MPP2703 |

OK, so everyone has an opinion, and as you can see from my title, you can guess mine. Firstly book, we arrived a few minutes early as a couple were turned away in front of us, so booking essential. We were shown promptly to our table and our server Eric L, was with us in no time. Ordered a glass of draft beer and a vino, $7 & $14 respectively. Oddly my beer came out and we had to wait for my wife's vino, Eric explained he could pour beer, but not wine. Interesting. My wife ordered the 8oz Filet Mignon, which was the cheapest in any of the steakhouses we visited, $39.95 and coupled that with a Jacket Potato, $7.95. I had the lasagne, $24.95, pricey, but similar to other places. I am slightly surprised by others comments that the sides are extra, this seems to be standrad in all the steakhouses I visited. I finished off with slab of Tiramisu, $9, absolutely lovely. I really enjoyed the atmosphere here, slightly spoilt by a "Me" individual, but not as noisy as some place we visited nnor as dark. Staff were brilliant, thank you Eric. Highly recommended.

Great Service - Great Food

By AirSurfer |

Friday night and full house.... but our Opentable reservation got us right in on time with a good table. Our server Wendy was top notch, helped me customize a pasta order and offered good insight on everything else. She was busy, but made the rounds seamlessly. The grilled octopus appetizer was delicious and a good portion, and the potatoes that came with it were amazingly tasty as well. Ended up getting a 1/2 order of Italian sausage and some rigatoni with marinara sauce.. 1/2 order turned out be 3 sausages... no idea how one could eat 6. Wife had scallops which came with a large portion of roasted veggies... good size portion and delicious. Definitely will return.

Great environment; awesome food with large portions

This was and excellent experience. Great food and atmosphere. Have you picture taken with Harry Carey's bust.

Always a favorite

By Outnumbered Mom |

We love visiting Harry Caray's whenever we are in Chicago. We were able to walk in and get a table for dinner on Friday. The restaurant was full. Our waiter, Carlos, was very good. We ended up ordering way more food than our family could finish. Everything just sounded so good! We had bruschetta to start which was delicious and a huge platter. My husband and I had the prix fixe meal which included one of two salads, either steak or salmon, and a dessert. The steak was wonderful and perfectly medium. The salad and dessert were also very good. We ordered a side of brussel sprouts which are always amazing and this instance was no different. The kids all had the spaghetti with one huge meatball. They are almost everything on their plate which is pretty amazing. Make sure to take a picture with the "holey" cow when you visit! We can't wait to go back!

Good History and Fun

By William S |

The best pre-meal appetizer. An over-stuffed plate of home-made potato chips brought to the table. Fantastic! Turkey sandwich, with bacon was tasty. Caesar salad, a little bland. A fun place to visit, food is average, but the atmosphere and the history is what you pay for.

Great service

By cewilliams6272016 |

As a chain, this is typical. Nicely decorated and food was good. Sat in bar area as restaurant seating isn’t available mid afternoon. Had great service

Average

By Damaris B |

I liked the outside dinner area , very successful. But everything we ordered to eat and drink was not right for us. I asked for a recommendation of a very sweet wine but the one they served me was not sweet at all, we did not like the brochetas for appetizer because they were not prepared, the bread, tomato, cheese and vegetables were separate. The pasta I ordered tasted good but was very spicy. I think spicy menus should be specified on the menu cart. We ordered a dessert (it was good) and the waitress took a long time to bring it, she gave us the check before the dessert. Overall it was average.

Wonderful Meal

By RedLily1968 |

We were on our way to a different restaurant and decided to stop here instead and so glad we did! My 8oz filet was excellent and cooked to perfection. The wine was excellent. The shared sides were delicious and more than enough for 2 people. Our waiter was the best! I would definitely eat here again if I am in the area.

It's a bit of a fancy steakhouse.

By Kimitaka Sho |

It's a bit of an upscale steakhouse, so I made a good reservation before boarding. The steak is, of course, delicious. The atmosphere was calm and I could enjoy my meal slowly, but given the cost, I might not repeat it.

Fantastic end to a birthday weekend

By Kathy L |

It was early evening in the dining room was not yet opened. So we ate in the bar. A great old bar with dark wood and 1930 style decor. Of course there was a lot of Chicago Cubs and Harry Caray memorabilia on the walls. And memorize extended passages of scripture memorization it is playing all we had bruschetta as an appetizer. It was incredibly good and the ingredients were fresh. We ate various pasta dishes because we could not afford the steak prices. But that did not negate how fantastic the food was. For dessert we shared a Tiramisu that was absolutely perfect. The staff was very attentive and very knowledgeable and very patient with us as we tried to determine our dining choices. Also there was so much food that we were able to bring home additional meals. And those leftovers tasted as amazing as when they were originally plated.

Best waiter in Chicago!

By Erika L |

Amazing steaks, side dishes, history! Our waiter, Steve, was THE BEST! Make sure to check out the downstairs “museum”.

Fernando the Mexican waiter was the bomb!!!

By Joseph H |

We ate at Gibson’s the night before and this blew it away. The ambiance, food and service were impeccable and I have no criticism (a rarity)

Little gem of a place

By Andy P |

This is a great place to eat, the staff are very attentive and the food is delicious. The portions are very generous so you could easily share one. We had the lasagne which was amazing and the holy cow burger which was massive but very tasty. The museum in the basement is a nice touch. A must visit for any crime buffs.

Great Experience

By Kris |

Wonderful, reasonably priced meal! Filet had tremendous flavor and was accompanied with a well apportioned side. The service was equally superior! If I were a Chicago resident, I’d absolutely be a regular.

Perhaps one should stick with the pasta dishes, one of the toughest steaks I have ever had.

By ShadowLocke |

In going Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse with friends I was looking forward to a real treat in a steak and ordered the Kansas City bone in sirloin strip that our waiter indicated was much better than the NY Strip, having the bone in was going to give it more flavor and tenderness. The service was quite good, however, when I started eating my KC Strip, I found it to be one of the toughest steaks that I have ever eaten. I have had plenty of NY Strips and have found them to be both tender and flavorful. That said, I was surprised at how tough it was to cut and even harder to chew, giving my jaw a good workout. Perhaps the pasta is something that they are more noted for and, if so, I would stick with their pasta dishes. I was only able to eat about half of the steak, and it was so tough I didn't want to take the leftovers with me. The high point for me was the service as the only reason for not giving a single star after being really disappointed in my steak.

Beware of the 3% junk fee

By 80237travel |

I was genuinely looking forward to dinner at Harry Caray’s, as it’s been a Chicago institution for years. Instead of waiting for a table, I sat at the bar. No issue there — the atmosphere was lively, the full menu was available, and there were plenty of TVs for anyone wanting to watch a game. The overall vibe is classic Chicago steakhouse, though not nearly as refined as places like The Capital Grille or RL Restaurant. Some staff still wear the traditional white jackets, which is a nice touch, but the bar area feels noticeably less polished than the dining room and could use an upgrade. For food, I ordered the shrimp cocktail and the grilled octopus. Both arrived at the same time even though the shrimp cocktail was meant to be an appetizer. The octopus was excellent — genuinely reminiscent of what I’ve had in France, Italy, and Malta. The shrimp cocktail, however, was underwhelming. It was served on a plain plate with cocktail sauce and no ice. The presentation needs improvement. For the price point at Harry Caray’s, it looked like an afterthought. I had a glass of La Crema chardonnay, which was perfectly fine. Bar service was adequate but impersonal. My water was never refilled. No one asked how my meal was, and I wasn’t offered dessert. The real problem (and the reason I won’t return!) was the surprise 3% surcharge added to my bill. When I asked what it was for, the bartender said it was “for the building” and that it was mandatory. He even added, “I don’t make the rules.” This is exactly the kind of deceptive, nickel-and-diming practice that gives restaurants a bad name. It’s not a tip, not a service charge, not a wage surcharge — it’s simply a junk fee added to inflate the restaurant’s revenue while pretending the listed prices are lower than they actually are. At a place of this stature, it’s shameful and frankly insulting to customers. Because of this undisclosed 3% fee, Harry Caray’s has lost my business. Chicago has no shortage of restaurants offering similar or better food without sneaking junk charges onto the bill. Travelers should be aware — what you see on the menu is not what you’ll pay.

Good

By Iain G |

Badly, let down by a nearby establishment we came here in hope. Glad we did very authentic, very historic and the meatballs and lasagne were great.

An exceptional dining experience

By Dubbelxposure |

The Restaurant was quiet, with only a few tables filled, primarily due to the extremely cold weather. However, the welcome was warm, the food excellent and the service efficient and friendly. Having promised myself at least one good meal on this trip, I wasn;t holding back so started with the Deep-fried Calamari. As a bit of a connoisseur, I have to say that this was up there with the best - Big pieces, soft and juicy within a crisp batter with a nice relish on the side. Main course was an 8oz Filet Mignon, served without a crust and cooked medium Rare. It was simply divine, and accompanied with Sauted wild Mushrooms and Crispy Brussel sprouts. Even better, as i was on my own, they offered me half portions of the sides. the whole thing was washed down with a glass of rather tasty chianti. Overall an exceptional dining experience

Traditional, Old School Steakhouse

By Daryl C |

Harry Caray's is a good example of an old school steakhouse. White-coated waiters hustling between tables. You get efficient but not friendly service. The food is very good but mostly traditional. You won't be disappointed if you're looking for traditional.

Look no more, here’s the place to eat your steak

By Pål-Morten G |

This is the best steak we ever had - anywhere in the world. We had the New York strip dry aged, and it was cooked to perfection. Our only regret is that we ordered dessert - IT was to much to eat after the fantastisk steak. We had Joe as our waiter - he gave us the best service. His recommandation of wine was excellent and the wine matched the food perfectly and made the meal complete. Thanks

Old world class and elegance

Wonderful experience. Great food and service. The kind if place you can't wait t o return too. Our waiter made it a memorable experience.

Absolutely MUST eat here

By David P |

We've been to Harry Carey's 5 times - not once have we left dissapointed. Highly recommended - dry age steak, lobster, asparagus side, calamri. I can say the Lobster is the best we've had anywhere in the country. Our waiter on our most recent visit, Kevin was delightful!

GREAT STEAK

By William B |

Treated my gal on her 65th birthday and it was grand she loved the place, so much cool stuff to see. Our waitress was awesome helping with a cake and singing happy birthday!!!! But the steak is why we were there and it was perfect, she had the Filet and I the Strip both were done to perfection, the sides of mashed potatoes and spinach were enough to share and yummy.

As Good As Ever

By twa203 |

Very long time since I was here - 25 years. Stopped for a quick lunch, just a pint of Sam Adam’s and some calamari. Delightful old world feel, great service and really good value.

Cool place good linguini and shrimp.

By Jiggy Canfield |

Very cool place for baseball, entertainment, mafia fans. Was surprised at food. Got Italian weeding soup in a cup....cup was small..2 tiny meatballs basically took up the cup..but it was good...they do provide homemade? chips to start....pictures of athletes, actors, politicians all over the place, and a big bar, many sitting areas, many tvs. I got the scrimp scampi minus escarole....very very good....the hidden little red peppers really spiced it up...it was 5-6 big shrimp the linguini and the sauce was excellent. Will try the steak (a tad expensive on menu) next time.

Holy Cow… (had to)

By Kevin1975 |

Outstanding night out with friends! Waited was superb! Food was fantastic! I was able to buy my good friend a perfectly cooked aged steak for his fiftieth Bday! Great ambience, with the ability to hear the conversation at the table! I don’t know why you wouldn’t go here, if in Chicago downtown!

Classic Italian Steakhouse with Baseball Vibe

By JPatti1 |

I just love this restaurant - the look and feel of it is classic Italian steakhouse with a baseball theme, the menu is almost perfect and the service is fast (even too fast?). The dining rooms are truly beautiful, with exposed brick and oozing history, and really set the tone for the meal. The menu, with its classical Italian steakhouse fare of steaks and pasta, has so many enticing offerings and the servers, in their white coats, have a perfect look to match the setting. The only reason that this is not a five star review is that the food is good, not great. If you want top steaks, then there are many other Chicago steakhouses that might be considered (Gibson's for example) - if you want top Italian, then there are also many excellent options (Volare nearby is a good one). The food is good, just not the reason one comes here.

What a pleasant surprise

By LifeAsIz |

My sister and I were walking around the River North area of Chicago when we began to get a bit peckish. We saw Harry Caray's and decided to give it go. We knew nothing about the place before we walked in. What a cool restaurant and what a pleasant surprise. Filled with Chicago memorabilia, it has tons of character. I ordered the grass-fed New York strip and the sweet corn brulee. The steak was perfect and the sweet corn brulee was so yummy, I'm searching around for the recipe now. Carlos was our waiter and he was a gem. The whole waitstaff was friendly and the service was spot on. Can't wait to go back some day. Covid-19 note: The tables and guests were very well spaced out. We had the option of an electronic version of the menu via QR code if you preferred not to handle a physical menu.

Superb

By ChucknJen |

What a great dining experience! Carlos was our server. He made us feel at home. Drinks and food were excellent. The pace of the meal was just right as was the taste. Carlos wasn’t pushy about the steak but was clear that it is a steakhouse. And all of we’re thankful we had beef. The sides were delicious as well. Corn brûlée. Who’s even heard of that? It was one of the highlights. The food feels like fine dining while the decor feels like a sports memorabilia museum. Definitely going back if I’m town again.

Great as always

By Maysmosaics |

We have been here twice now and both times were fabulous. I had shrimp with risotto and my husband had the chicken Vesuvio. We split the wedge which was planning for both of us. Servings are huge and we came home with food. Loved it.

Great food and atmosphere

By jsuwga |

This place was awesome. Called ahead for registration and was seated promptly upon arrival with 8 people. The waitress was awesome and answered all our questions about the menu items. We had crab cakes and meatballs for appetizers both were fantastic. We had steak, pastas, seafood for entrees and everyone cleaned their plates. They have a great selection of beers and wine as well. We had cheesecake and vanilla ice cream for dessert which was just spectacular. Can't wait to come back my next trip to Chicago!

Nice spot

We stopped by for drinks while out sightseeing for the day. The bar atmosphere was fun. The free homemade potato chips hit the spot. My husband ordered an old fashioned. It wasn’t drinkable. Everything else was great.

Average food, Mediocre Service, Cool Chiago Landmark and History

By tracy |

I saw Harry Caray's while on a mob and gangster bus tour of Chicago (side note-go on that tour-so fun!). The restaurant looked cool so me, my mom and sister decided to go for dinner. We were in town for my sister's 50th birthday. I mentioned that a couple times to the waiter who did nothing with that info. We also asked him to take a picture and he said he'd come back and take it and never did. The service overall was lackluster at best. The food was eh. I got the chicken vesuvio (spelling?) which they list as the best in Chicago. I thought it was just okay. My mom got the spaghetti and thought the it was just okay as well. Nothing really special about anything we ate. BUT I will say the ambience and location is amazing. If you like Chicago history, particularly mob history, this place is for you. The Nitti vault down in the bottom of the restaurant is so fun to look at and read all the newspaper articles and look at the pictures. So maybe go get drinks there and just skip the dinner experience.

dined in the bar for Pasta

By WA_traveller57 |

Everyone in our group ordered pasta dishes and were happy with them. Can't speak for the steak or veal. I can't say it was the best Italian I have ever had. It was busy and we were in the bar so noisy. No bread given with our meals either. For eating in the bar it was fine.

Dinner was delicious!

What a great ambiance! Feels like you step back into the 1930s! Great pictures along the walls. Delicious food also. Great service!

Great restaurant near O'Hare Airport

By @acs |

I took a couple of customers to Harry Carays Italian Steakhouse. It was my 1st time there. My guests and I truly enjoyed our lunch. We had great appetizers, calamari, arancini, some stake burgers and eggplant veggie dishes. Food was excellent and service quite good. A nice upscale atmosphere. A little pricey, but normal for an upscale restaurant. I would definitely eat there again next time in N. Chicago!

Great Chicago Steak House

Top notch service with excellent foood. We were pleased from appetizer to dessert. Manny was a great waiter and we will ask to sit in his section on our next visit. I loved looking at the baseball memorabilia throughout the restaurant.

One of the Best Meals I have Ever had

By Bill |

Shared drinks, corn dish, pork chop and octopus. Every taste was incredible. Octopus Cooked to perfection with the best spices. Pork chop the same. Whatever grade it was, it was like nothing I have ever had. The taste of each bite. The fat was a delicacy. Seasoning brought out the flavor. It did not cover it up. The staff was friendly and helpful. 10 stars all around. The place itself is a museum from baseball to gangster history. Walk all over and go downstairs.

Great Food, Atmosphere, and Location

By Lucas R |

The food was great, and there were some options for people with allergies. Another plus side of the restaurant is how it is right on the Navy Pier, making it a perfect place to eat before a night at the Pier.

Amazing Tastes and Abundant Servings!

By Jakarta H |

This is a fantastic restaurant that exudes a real, family-run warmth from the moment you enter. It was difficult to choose just a handful of the delectable meals on the menu! Every mouthful of the creamy Bolognese pizza that followed our appetizer of bruschetta and calamari was delectable and obviously lovingly prepared. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and the amounts were enormous. The entire crew was friendly and upbeat. We can't wait to visit Bristol again soon!

Fabulous food, service and atmosphere.

By Bobbie W |

Incredible good food served in a historical restaurant that has many stories about Al Capone’s “outfit”. We got to see the basement and secret rooms, especially Al Capone’s private room/study. The food was delicious, especially the tomato soup and sirloin steak. It was a wonderful night to remember.

Thanksgiving Day Disappointment

By Lo K |

Went to this restaurant on Thanksgiving day. Ordered the prime rib special, should have ordered the turkey. When I saw this slab of grey was on my plate, I knew it was not gonna be good. This was the worst prime rib I have ever ordered. Don’t know what happened. Maybe it was previously frozen, or overcooked for medium rare. Had gristle in it that couldn’t be eaten. Had to take it out of my mouth and put on plate. Prime rib should be pink when serving, not grey, as it was ordered to be medium rare. Even the leftover was was awful Had to throw it away. Mashed potatoes were a dud. Thought about sending it back, but didn’t want to make a fuss on the holiday. Service was good, as were drinks and desert. Very disappointed in paying so much for a substandard entree. Next time, stick to the turkey.

Don’t pass up this gem

By Bill |

This was our 2nd time eating here and it was amazing, order the bone in ribeye it was delicious, everyone in our party of 8 loved their food, we didn’t feel rushed like I read on the other reviews and it was a busy Saturday night

Worth every penny

By Lisa W |

Relaxed ambience, attentive staff and food prepared exactly as asked for. The NY Strip was cooked to perfection and melted like butter in the mouth. Hubby had the Rib Eye and that was delicious too. Not a cheap night out but we’ll worth it for a special occasion with special food.

Fascinating place with great ‘Outfit’ history

Nice Sports bar, had a couple of beers, and I am told food is good too. Friendly bar crew. Visit the cellar to see Nitti’s vault.

Holy Cow!

By Henry’s Take |

“Holy cow!” Can you believe that this is our 3rd visit to the “Windy City” and yet only our 1st review of Harry’s place? Well, in an effort to avoid the “3 strikes and you’re out” maxim, it’s finally time to “clean up” this situation. For me the first question that came to mind upon entering was: is this place a museum or a restaurant? The sheer number of pictorial homages to Harry is nearly overwhelming if you choose to view each one. So taken by the ambience and easy conversations to be had, our visit spanned nearly 5 hours and if you linger any place long enough you’re bound to learn a few things. Whether it was chatting it up with the friendly bartender or the patrons seated near us, the happy stories seemed endless (including about a manager here who’s actually a Phillies fan and the former coal tunnels still located beneath us). Eat here, don’t eat here. Just get here, pull up a stool, and chat with whomever is nearest you as if that person were as gregarious as Harry himself. He’d want it that way. Cheers, Harry! “A one, a two, a three”, and that’s…Henry’s Take. #henryatharrysplace

Superb!

By Jim A |

Came here for our last night in Chicago on a trip. We picked the right place! Started off with a bottle of A to Z wine then dived into salads. For dinner I had the Pork Chop and she had the Eggplant Parm. Both were wonderful. We had enough room to split the turtle cheesecake which left us pretty much unable to function! Such a wonderful evening and out server, Wendy, stood out as world class. Highly recommend visiting this establishment.

Everything Great

By Patty R |

First of all the food was delicious. The service superb. The ambiance great. We came with three generations and we were all pleased with everything. We made reservations a week before but when we got there 20 minutes early they were able to accommodate.

Nostalgic quality

By ganoke50 |

The service and the food were wonderful. Dry aged ribeye was everything I could have hoped for. Drinks were not as exceptional.

Pleasantly surprised

By MainelyCamp |

Figured this may be a tourist trap. And it is. But it’s good! Prices for pasta reasonable. Steak prices high every where in Chicago. But these were reasonable too. Steak was cooked perfect. Great service. And some of the best tiramisu .

Outstanding restaurant!

By STANLEY C |

We had a superb dinner experience at this great restaurant. Our servers Francisco and Fernando were top notch and helpful. The restaurant itself is conveniently located in the near north area of the city. The walls are covered with photos of Chicago events and sports figures. There is a huge bar at the front of the building with ample space for dining. Drinks are fairly reasonably priced as is the food. Dinner for two with drinks and tip will set you back about $150 but it is well worth it. Our meals ( penne ala vodka with sausage and chicken marsala) were delicious. We did not order the steak but the restaurant is renowned for them. We HIGHLY recommend this gem of a restaurant!

Dinner and far too many cocktails 😂

By Devonbilbo |

An incredible bar with loads of history we visited on a Crime bus tour for a few minutes as it used to be a hangout for Chicago gangs. We decided to go back after the tour and had a fantastic evening one of the waiters gave us a quick tour of the building including the speakeasy but the best bit was our waitress Kara she was amazing I went there to enjoy a couple of cocktails but somehow I think I tried most of them! Kara also tailored the cocktails to my taste and chatted with us all night while still managing to keep all her other customers happy 😊 If you are in Chicago don't miss this place 100% recommend it.

Yummy Food!

By Amanda G |

Decided to eat here after visiting during a Crime & Mob tour. Interesting memorbillia to see from the Al Capone days. The food was absolutely delicious, and the waitress was very attentive, would definately eat here again, well worth it (my husband said it was the best pork chop he'd ever had).

Great after a Cubs game

By Luke C |

Had a later dinner after a Cubs game with wife and son. His first time to restaurant. He absolutely loved hit, had a filet and calamari and loved them both. I’d never had anything other than steak so tried chicken parmesean and wife had chicken Vesuvius, both were great. They also have a very nice wine selection. Great nostalgia with everything displayed in the restaurant.

Don’t Waste Your Time

By Denise L |

We were told this was a Michelin Starred restaurant. Well they got that sooooooo wrong. The staff was very attentive but the food was NOT Good. There are so many good restaurants in Chicago, that you don’t need to waste your time here. Sorry, to say we won’t be back

Excellent

Harry Caray's specialises in steak and Italian-American cuisine. The restaurant was established in 1987 in Chicago's River North neighborhood. As well as steaks, there are excellent pastas, salads, and seafood to choose from. Excellent.

The Italian of Al Capone

By cperonne |

Last night in Chicago in this typical Italian restaurant. Not many customers because of the Democratic convention in town. Welcome and perfect advice by the waiter. As a starter we shared a crab cake and delicious fried squid As a dish I chose pasta cooked with vodka really good and my husband spaghetti with shrimp and sensational vegetables. Really a very good Italian restaurant with 30s decor and lots of pictures

Celebrity photos

By Adv4Me |

Kids enjoyed looking at all the photos of celebrities that have dined at the restaurant. My seafood Cobb salad was really good (two giant shrimps and lots of crab meat) especially since I paired it with a cocktail. Kids had pasta. Very reasonably pricing - less than $100 including tips for “fancy” dinner after watching a cubs game at Wrigley Field!

Back to the 1930’s Gangster Era ( plus baseball memorabilia!)

By LoveTravel90165 |

Wonderful dining experience! We were pampered with excellent service, and delighted with delicious food! It was like being transformed back to the 1930’s. Fabulous history (gangster era) and the music matched the venue. Waiters were more than accommodating, and treated us like special guests (something not usually found these days!) Absolutely recommend!! And my hubby loved all of the baseball history and memorabilia there, too!!

Great food and atmosphere but expensive steaks

By Andyonhishols |

Loved it. Great atmosphere and loved all the stars’ photos on the walls. Steak was really great but 1 star off because they cost $50 each.

Must stop

By BriannaW2323 |

Loved everything about this restaurant! The service, the food was incredible, the drinks, and the atmosphere. Would make this a must stop for nice evening dinner!

Special

By Marc L |

HC serves beautiful and tasty meat dishes. Some plates are probably too big for europeans. The waiter advised us to take a menu. That was a good suggestion. Good food and just right portion. Both meat dishes (tournedo and ribeye) were perfect. Tender and excellent in taste. The dessert was very good too ( lime cake and a mango sorbet) . The service was completely good. Real attention to the customers. Thnx.

Yummy food and good service

This is the third or fourth time we visited this Steakhouse from LA to Chicago! The steak was really juicy, soft, and tasty. Also the service was really warm, humor, and nice.

Everything about this restaurant is GREAT!

By Fernanda Espinosa P |

It was our first time in Chicago, we decided to have dinner at Harry Carays, since we made the reservation the staff was really attentive and gave follow up to our arrival. The service was perfect !!!! We were attended by Talon, the best waiter of Chicago we can say, and Romualdo and Juan which where part of the staff too!! The steak is one of the bests we’ve ever had and so was the pasta. If you think of coming to Chicago, consider a must coming to this traditional restaurant, they’ll make you feel like home . ❤️🥰

Great steak and lobster

By Fairport Travelers |

All I thought it would be and more, right in the heart of all the action north of the river. Service and food were incredible, great wine list. Steak and Lobster special was awesome. Tons of baseball and Harry Caray memorabilia all over the place which adds a great touch.

Pleasantly Surprised

By Kathleen R |

I never expect much from business meals. The bus pulls up and they need to feed 150 people – the story usually ends with a cold meal. BUT I give a ton of credit to this place. The service was excellent, and the food was hot, flavorful, and timely. Everyone was served on time, and no one waited for their dish. I was impressed and it has earned another visit. Going back to Chicago for a weeding and will make sure this is on the list of places to revisit.

Oh okay

By ParisgalChicagoIL |

It had been years since we last visited and the servers and staff are still cheerful and the restaurant rooms are sill loaded with great memorabilia but something was lacking. Hot food was served hot yes, but we felt like we were being rushed despite the room being only half full. Probably won’t go back

Went for a family dinner and

By Irishstud |

Went for a family dinner and I would highly recommend if you want a good steakhouse with excellent service! Our waiter, Steve, did not rush us, he gave great recommendations, and the atmosphere was relaxing for our dinner.

I’d give it a 6 if I could.

By Joanne L |

I’d give it a 6 if I could. The salad was delicious but the horseradish encrusted filet was extraordinary. The broccoli was even better! I don’t know how it’s cooked but YUM! Every one of the 6 people raved that their food was phenomenal. Then we toured the museum with the gangster memorabilia. It was great fun!

Delicious

By Danielle M |

Delicious and fun! We decided to have dinner to celebrate our 20-year anniversary! The food was delicious! My husband had the pomperdall and sausage pasta. He said it was delicious! The pasta was light, and the sauce was outstanding! I had the filet; it was cooked to perfection! Our waiter was Carlos; he made us feel at home. Everything was wonderful!

Boys night out

By sweetswinging |

Took 10 family and friends out for dinner before Bulls basketball game. We we treated like Royalty! Our waiter was hands on with cocktails and the menu, helping us out with dinner suggestions and on a whim , gave us a free appetizer . The food was great! My recommendation- order the Steak

Not very memorable

Very expensive and the food was not worth it. Service was very fast and we felt like we got rushed out the door. We would never go bsck

It's a home run!

By Jennifer & Brandon K |

It could be, it might be....it is a HOME RUN!! So we stay at a hotel in the area when we come to Chicago with our kids and have never tried Harry Caray's mostly because I assumed it was too much of a chain feel and would have mediocre food. We were pleasantly surprised to find that I was completely wrong in that assessment. My kids both loved their meals, with the biggest hit being the french fries. It almost seems as if they use sea salt crystals. The ones I sneaked when they weren't looking were excellent! I had a wedge salad and the filet mignon. The wedge was perfect. Not too much dressing, and just the right size. However, the start of the show was the filet. It was incredible. I have thought about it every day since I had it. They use some sort of seasoning that is exceptional. Maybe they use that seasoning on all of their steaks, but the filet was absolute perfection. The service was awesome. My kids are sometimes very loud in restaurants and this didn't seem to bother the waitstaff at all. They have the tables spaced out due to Co-Vid, but they also seated other parties away from us. I would highly recommend Harry Caray's if you want a kid-friendly restaurant that feels a little more upscale and adult. We are always on the search for the perfect combo. Bon Appetit!

Great Steaks with Some History

By Mike S |

Highly recommend this steakhouse. The food and service were extraordinary. I recommend the Kansas City steak. Also, do not forget to check out the Nitti vault for a little gangster history. We will return on our next trip to Chicago.

Excellent Steakhouse in the North Loop of Chicago

By mjannunziata |

We were In Chicago looking for a good steak and decided to visit Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse, We have never eaten at a celebrity restaurant and was not sure what to expect. so decided to give it a try First, we had a drink at their 60 feet, 6 inch bar Drinks and service were excellent. Then, we entered the dining room and was greeted by our server Matt. We ordered the Rigatoni alla Vodka and the ribeye steak with a Horseradish crust. Both dishes were cooked to perfection! We brought a bottle of wine to enjoy with dinner, the corkage fee was $25. Our busser Jose was also very attentive. After dinner he told us to go downstairs where we are able to see videos about Al Capone and Frank Nitti which we really enjoyed. There is also a Nitti Supper Club that sounds like it would be a lot of fun! If you get a chance, make Harry Caray a must when you are in Chicago>
