Hawthorns is a great bistro! Good food- try the zucchini chips , my favorite! The wait staff is also super helpful! The only reason I gave it 4 stars was I think the prices are a little on the high side!

I saw online that they had Chicken n waffles, after walking there 10 blocks in a downpour they announce that they only offer it on weekends:( I ordered the home fries and scrambled eggs I added avocado. There was very little scrambled eggs, the coffee was the worst $3.50 coffee ever. I not only wouldn't order it again I probably won't be back the service was poor as was the whole experience...

The place is packed for brunch but the food is great and reasonably priced. Great place to take your family. They also have a great beer selection which you can drink at your meal or take a six pack home.

they have a lovely fire place. I love going there when its cold outside and pick up a beer from a very extended selection in the fridge. Their brunch is great and its comparable to any brunch place near by. The wait was 45 mins but it went by quickly. I had a lox sandwich and it was delicious. Their bloody mary was salty but the pickles on garnish was good.

Our go-to brunch spot. All the food is always amazing, a wide selection of beer on tap and in bottles, plus cocktails. Get there early and be prepared to wait. You can also take beer to-go at a good price!

If you like a lot of choices in beer and GREAT food, you'll love Hawthorne's. Interesting menu. Reasonably priced food. Beers can get a bit costly. I had pizzette. DELICIOUS!! Can't remember what others had, but everyone LOVED it! Cute place. HIGHLY recommend.

Here are the reasons why I am making Hawthornes my favorite brunch spot in Philly. 1. If you go before 11:30ish on the weekend with a party of 4 or less, you will most likely get seated, unlike other "trendy" establishments where you'd have to wait up to 45 minutes (*cough*: Green Eggs Cafe). 2. You can actually make reservations 24 hours in advanced. 3. Coffee is refilled continuously, delicious, and is fair-trade source (major brownie points). 4. Atmosphere is super cozy and cute and includes: a real burning fire place, large windows streaming in light, a counter to fill up your growlers, and an amazing beer selection showcased in their well-cataloged beer fridges. Considering all they have to offer, the space is cozy and comfortable. A hard thing to capture. 5. And of course, the brunch food is amazing. I'm an eggs Benedict girl and they do it to perfection. People that I take here are my friends and family for a reason...we share food from our plates - so I can safely say there other brunch selections are equally delicious. They have happy hour from 4pm-6pm (half off beer).

Yes, it's greasy. Yes, it's tasty. Yes, it has tons of menu options, millions of beers from around the world, air conditioning so strong it felt like you needed a scarf in the middle of Philadelphia summer. We liked it and would go back (with a scarf).

I haven’t been out in a while due to covid but I drive by this place every night after work so I really wanted to try! My boyfriend and I sat in one of their lit bubbles. It was definitely an experience! He got the double burger and I got the fish tacos. Both amazing! I also tried their hot cocktails, nice and strong. You wouldn’t even remember that you’re outside I’m the middle of winter lol. We enjoyed ourselves!

We went there with the family for a Saturday morning brunch. The food was excellent, the service was am great and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. I highly recommend the chicken and waffles.

While visiting in Philly for the past 2 weeks we have been to Hawthornes on two occasions. Once for Brunch and then again for Lunch. EVERYTHING has been great. Try the corn dog. Not just your ordinary vendor dog. It is sausage wrapped in french toast batter with a rasberry bar b que sauce. Our Grandson loved the pancakes and the fried chicken and waffles is a winner. By the way, Don't miss all the beer.

A little off the beaten path, but if you're headed to The Philadelphia Magic Gardens (and you should be, 'cause it's a great Philly experience) this is the perfect place to find a reasonably priced meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A recent early lunch consisted of 2 perfectly cooked build your own omelets with multiple vegetable, protein and cheese choices. A hefty portion of roasted potatoes and thickly sliced toast made for a more than ample meal. There's outdoor seating for fine weather, alcohol is available and joy of joys there's simple syrup for your iced coffee. Simple casual ambience and a pleasant staff make this a great choice for families, friends and relaxed business meetings.

Terrific Belgian waffle with banana for breakfast. Very friendly staff. Coffee poured while we waited as well! Another perk is the beer mart where you can buy a mixed six pack! Did so and enjoyed a beer when I got home.

For my birthday we woke up and brunch was on the agenda. I've been tired of the same usual spots and we decided to give Hawthorne's a try. I had been here once before (in the summer) for drinks and a lite meal with a girlfriend. I had heard good things so we were excited! We called ahead and they said there was hardly a wait--20 minutes or less. Unfortunately when we got there they had a rush and we were now up to 45 minutes. Oh well! Thankfully, they have the self serve beer fridge's which encouraged us to have a beer before breakfast (it was my birthday after all!). We grabbed a seat by the fireplace while we waited. About 35 minutes later they were ready to seat us. Our server was SO friendly and nice! We decided to continue with another beer and although there was some mild confusion about which I wanted, she was quick to remedy the situation. I ordered pancakes with berries and whipped cream and he had Carrot Cake french toast. Our server made sure to ask if I wanted the strawberries/raspberries in the pancakes or on top. I said on top. We also ordered a side of bacon and a side of sausage. The Carrot Cake French Toast was GIGANTIC. He actually couldn't finish it. He said it was delicious. The pancakes came with strawberries in it and mixed fruit on top. It was fine. To be honest, our server was so nice we didn't really care to complain. They were tasty and really filling. The bacon was delish but the sausage wasn't our favorite. They were big Italian Sausage Links (like the kind in pasta sauce) but they were OK. We were really full, anyway so we probably couldn't have finished them anyway. When we went to pay at the counter we learned that they pool (share) their tips. This was disappointing to us because we liked our server so much and wanted to leave her extra. We left a hefty tip and then tracked her down as we were leaving to give her a little extra. She didn't know it was my birthday, but truthfully she is the reason it got off to a great start! We will absolutely be back!!!

Hawthorne’s is a dimly-lit, cozy, South Philly delight. Often packed, so making a reservation is the way to go, but they do have a “first-come-first-serve” bar facing the kitchen window, so if you’re solo and looking for quick seating, that’s the way to go. Friendly staff. Surprisingly spacious. Good drinks. Also, you can enjoy a cozy spot on the couch next to a fireplace while waiting for a table.

not too far from our hotel and came highly rated on TA true local spot that was awesome on service and dinner so good! We'll be back

Ordered Mahi-mahi Tacos. Two very small soft shell tacos with a very small piece of blackened fish, a slice of avocado and shredded carrot appeared with a few fried tortilla chips covered with a cream/vegetable mix. Not enough food to consider it a meal. Tasty, but not very creative or interesting for the price.

The restaurant and bar was a pleasant place to visit. I love there use of space inside and out. The food was excellent and very different for brunch but it as a pleasure . The staff was a little slow, I marked it up to being under staff. They were training a person during our visit. However, there were a few members standing around talking. I would go back so I could try the other dishes.

What a great restaurant for a casual dinner. My friend- recommended Hawthornes because they have a great choice of beer! They have 7 cases full of beer from all around the world as well as local brewers. She had a rootbear brewed beer that did not taste like beer at all as we are not true beer lovers but this beer is worth it!! The staff can tell you anything you want to know about the beer-taste body and they can recommend one if your not that savoy as a beer drinker-like us! Our server suggested we try it over ice-we liked it better just cold in a glass! The food was fabulous as well-we started with a cheese plate and moved on to a salad and a burger. The burger was the best I ever had! A great place no reservations required outdoor seating for warmer weather and a fireplace inside for the chilly nights! Strongly recommend for a casual dinner or take out-beer too or just a place to meet had a good beer and a bite to eat! Thank you for a great experience!

Great burgers. Excellent beer selection: on tap, growlers, and you can also grab cans/bottles from the glass cases in the back. Also, the Caesar salad with blacked chicken is the real deal. I am frequently disappointed with attempts at blackening in the Northeast, this this has some great spice to it. Anchovies offered and were excellent, if you like that sort of thing.

We were in Philly for a quick overnight trip with our children (9 & 12). We wanted a nice dinner spot with good beer. We found Hawthornes by searching for spots with excellent beer selection. These guys have great service. They only take reservations when they are more than 24 hours in advance, but we called anyway to let them know that 9 of us would be arriving in 1/2 hour. They welcomed us, and helped us get some drinks while waiting for a table. Service was great. Food was great. Beer was awesome! We enjoyed it so much that we returned in the morning for Sunday brunch. One waitress recognized us and made a point to stop by and thank us for returning. We live in VA, but will definitely be back to Hawthornes on our next trip. btw: they don't have a kid menu, but they were happy to make a grill cheese for the one "picky eater" in our group. He loved it.

Always welcoming neighborhood bistro with great breakfasts, wraps, sandwiches and sides. Great when the weather permits outdoor eating and front windows open wide to 11th St. Never had a bad bite or sour server.

A friend of ours recommend Hawthornes and we owe her a free meal for the recommendation because The food, the staff and the atmosphere were absolutely amazing! When in Philly do yourself a favor and stop at Hawthornes, you won't be disappointed.

When my friends suggested this place for brunch, I was excited to try it, as I’m a sucker for French toast and theirs claimed to be unlike any other. It was essentially bread pudding. So don’t go just to try the “French toast” unless you want some fairly heavy bread pudding. I also had a bite of a friend’s funnel cake French toast. That was exactly what it was advertised to be and it was pretty darn good. Some other items on the menu sound pretty great but alas, I won’t be back. With so many places to enjoy brunch in this city, I just can’t patronize a place with this kind of price gauging. They originally had BYO mimosas. Then they went to selling them, but you could buy carafes at a normal restaurant price. Now they’ve done away with those and they sell tiny bottles of champagne. I also noticed the Valentine’s prix fixe menu while I was there, and they’ve more than doubled the price from a few years ago. And they provide a max number of refills on their French presses of coffee (their only coffee). Perhaps one or two of these moves wouldn’t have me really batting an eye. But add them all up and it’s off-putting. If I'm going to wait 45 minutes for brunch, there are tons of other amazing places to choose.

While I'm not a beer drinker, this pub/restaurant/beer shop was very close to my B&B, and started dinner service at 5pm -- which seemed to promise a quick bite before a museum program I was attending at 6pm... So I gave it a try. Hundreds and hundreds of beers (bottled) are available for dining consumption or take-away, as well as growler-fillups. I ordered a pork sandwich (Drunken Pig) with fries, and a hard cider. The cider came and I started enjoying that -- but the dinner didn't show up, and then the delay reached that "this is not normal" stage, and time kept ticking on. (There were only 2 other tables occupied when I arrived -- I got there right at 5pm, when their website says the kitchen re-opens for dinner.) Eventually I asked the waitress, and she said "it's coming". Another 5-10 minutes and it finally appeared. A simple hoagie-style sandwich (heated, not just cold-cuts) and a side of fries, and it took close to 30 minutes. Now, pressed for time to make my museum appointment, I had to scarf it all down really quickly, unfortunately. The sandwich was tasty enough, and the fries were very good. (So was the cider.) At the end, the waitress told me "The manager is aware of the delay with your order." -- I don't know what good that does anyone; it didn't help me, but oh well. It was really baffling though, because at that time of day, there were more staff than patrons in the restaurant. Thankfully, a quick dash to the hotel and I was only a few minutes late to the museum engagement. I'd probably go back; the entrees sounded interesting, and if I wasn't pressed for time, I'd have tried something more robust than a sandwich.

Everything is delicious! I have come here for both Brunch and Dinner and have basically licked the plate after every meal. The servers are attentive and the atmosphere is comfortable and relaxing. Highly recommend!

Service was excellent, food was amazing. We had a very difficult time deciding on breakfast vs. lunch. Welsh Rarebit was fantastic, baked potato soup fantastic and the breakfast potatoes were just delicious - tons of rosemary so if you're not a fan stay back. Grainy/nutty toast served with omelet (no option offered at time of service) was returned and gladly replaced with pumpernickel (we have a nut issue that we failed to mention) Parking was not an issue.

Great casual atmosphere. Fantastic food! Great breakfast potatoes, carrot cake pancakes and beautiful bacon. Hosted and served by extremely friendly and accommodating staff!! Highly recommended.

This south Philly watering hole serves a mixed menu of American foods. The background music isn't but is in keeping with the "Generation Y" clientel. Beer seems to be the drink du jour at this restaurant which boasts umteen brands. "Cute" mason jars are used for drinking glasses. After a few visits, I have concluded the service is less than stellar. Babys always dot the landscape and are made welcome. On my last visit I had the biscuits and gravy. I found the biscuits to be dry, almost chaulky served with an inadequate amount of tasty gravy. There was an additional fee for more. My partner had eggs Benedict. The sauce looked and tasted commerical--not home made. Would I go back? Yes. It is close to my apartment.

Now this is a great brunch spot. We were walking around and were actively looking for a breakfast spot when we decided to ask some locals. We saw a couple sitting on their front porch and asked them "where can we get a decent breakfast?" They told us Morning Glorys or Hawthornes. We walked to Morning Glorys since it was closer. We put our name on the list and then sat down. But then we saw some of the food and it didn't look good so we decided to walk to Hawthornes. SO GLAD WE DID. This was a cheerful, friendly place that is a beer boutique. We could hear classic rock (think Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin) being played. We saw some of the food being served and we knew we made the right choice. We were offered beer for breakfast and it seemed like you just walk up, pick your pour, and then tell the cashier what table you are so they can add it to the bill. Our breakfast was delicious. Bacon, eggs, potatoes, coffee and a side of pancakes. The pancakes were the best part of our breakfast. We regretted not trying the french toast (next time ;p) Prices were not out of control, which I was pleasantly surprised. If I was ever in Philadelphia again, I would go here for breakfast.

Nice place for breakfeast and lunch. Great outdoor seating and a menu that will fit anyone's taste buds. Happy hour 4-6 $1 off drafts... Not bad considering some great beers start at $5

Within a couple of blocks of my center-city hotel, Hawthorne’s was perfect for a small group brunch just before leaving Philadelphia. Six of us wanted a reasonably priced breakfast/lunch meal to round out our conference. With brunch meals between ten and fifteen dollars, and some delicious coffee, I highly recommend Hawthorne’s. I had the “Classic Breakfast Sammie”, which is a sandwich of an English muffin, bacon, egg, and cheese - with hot sauce as a condiment. I asked for the hot sauce on the stove de, along with the sweet potato home fries. Two of my compadres ordered an omelette (one with egg whites, the other regular), two of my colleagues ordered “Juan’s Burrito”, and my final friend ordered a turkey BLT sandwich. The remarkable thing about the latter is that the turkey was not sliced: it was a thick piece of carved meat. Everyone raved about their meals, and we all left quite satisfied. The ambiance was really nice as well. Hawthorne’s is a quaint restaurant that has the feel of a bistro combined with a diner. While we were ordering, one of the wait staff was using a blackboard and chalk to draw the artwork highlighting the day’s specials - and it was quite beautifully done. All in all I highly recommend Hawthorne’s!

This place is a nice find that was recommend by a local friend. A big thank you is owed to them. This place has really good food. They don't settle with standard types of burgers and other dishes. The 5 star review comes because I love micro brews. They have a wall of different beers plus home brews on tap. Have been a few times and enjoyed every visit.

Our hiking group met here for 10:00 AM breakfast. There is a morning special : * Tuesday thru Friday 9am-11am Two eggs any style, homefries, toast & coffee or tea for $4.99, which is a deal, considering the coffee is $3.50 a cup. There are breakfast burritos; cinnamon pancakes; special pancakes; French toast, etc with a morning special. We tried the holiday cocoa and white chocolate peppermint pancake with whipped cream that was OK. For lunch it is basic American flare- burgers and sandwiches with a flair. The uniqueness in this modern but cozy restaurant is the burning wood fireplace on cold days which add atmosphere.

From the bohemian, relaxed location to the great good and environment! There is always a wait but it is totally worth it. The food is well put together. I particular don't like home fries but these people know how to make them well. Brunch is incredible.

The food was AMAZING! Hubby and I had a cheese and meat place, chourizo meatballs and a gnocchi cheeseburger special and everything was perfect! Beer is mostly serve yourself, which is different, but really gives you a chance to look at the MANY different options they have! The place is small, but really cute! Would definitely go back!

If you love beer, along with great food, this is your place. For more pictures and commentary, check out www.gustatori.com.

We went for brunch and glad we did. Thru don't take reservations we didn't wait long, but any wait is worth it. We got breakfast sandwiches, French Toast & the Hawthorne omlet...all so yummy! The home fries are so flavorful they don't need salt/pepper or ketsup. Great atmosphere & service.

We had a great brunch....the place was crowded but no one seemed to mind because as we found out the food was worth the wait. To make things even better our waitress Susan thanked us for our patience ... and truly was a ray of sunshine on a cloudy cold day!! We will return !

Very nice location on a not very busy crossing, with tables outside among some plants, overall a very pleasant atmosphere. On the evening I came they only had one white wine by the glass available, which was a rather boring pinot grigio, but I would come here again for drinks. Apparently they have a good beer selection. My entree, meanwhile, was rather terrible: a pasta dish that swam in oil and was not particularly interestingly seasoned. I eat only a few bites. When I looked around to see what other tables had, I noticed that quite a few did not finish their dishes. When the waiter asked whether they would like to take their dishes home, I heard several times that they preferred not to.

Went for brunch with my friends here on Sunday. Had a long wait but it was totally worth it. The banana foster waffle was amazing.

This is a go to a restaurant for the neighborhood. Very family friendly and great for patrons from all walks of life. The food ranges from very good to excellent. Be sure to try the burger and keep an eye out for delicious specials. Brunch is usually just amazing. And don't forget to check out the beer selection.

Hawthornes has a great selection of beers (seemed very enjoyable for everybody I had dinner with, unfortunately I could not drink that day). Dinner was very good - the menu included items which very regularly (such as pierogi with different stuffings), staples like burgers, and a good choice of entrees including specials. The reason why I only give 4 stars is that they use names on the menu which describe certain things and when the dish comes, it is not really what it was supposed to be (for instance the lakes was glorified mashed potatoes, and the chocolate torte was really a chocolate mousse...).

First, they don’t serve “real” maple syrup with pancakes and waffles. My husband had some kind of mash with potatoes and eggs. It was 90% potatoes. I asked for multigrain toast. It came out not ever slightly brown. It was like eating warm bread. Never going there again. Honey’s ir Green Eggs is much much better.

Cosy vibe, the pancakes were fluffy n tasty, the south of the border dish with chorizo was delicious. Wish they had better quality tea though ... overall a great brunch option

Hawthorne's is a very popular spot - and on a Saturday night we were well-advised to have a reservation.High ceilings and lots of people plus loud music made conversation challenging for dinner, but the delicious pot roast special hit the spot on a chilly night. Breakfast the next morning included pumpkin pancakes and some great bacon as well as less loud music. The servers were attentive and very helpful with the copious amounts of coffee consumed by our party. I learned that this restaurant burned two years ago and has been re-habbed and re-opened - the high ceilings and beams are very attractive, but an opportunity to deal with sound-absorbing materials was missed.

Simply perfect and Sinful!! Omg!! What an incredible spot! Amazing restaurant / pub with an extensive breakfast / lunch / dinner menu!!! yes, they have drinks! ;-) The interior is Modern and cozy, but they also offer seating outside. If you love breakfast and brunch as much as I do, you will love this place! They never disappoint! They also have seasonal offerings too which are always a delightful surprise. My meals are always DELICIOUS, DIVINE and on POINT!! Everybody, and I truly mean everybody that works here is super friendly. The service is always excellent, regardless of how busy they are. The portions are generous so come with an empty stomach!

My son who lives on Philly took us here for brunch on Saturday morning. I had a great crab cake and poached eggs on brioche with hollandaise. My husband had the steak and eggs and loved it. Very good food, great service and reasonably priced. Would definitely go back.

We stumbled across this place during beer week. A grab and go beer cafe. They have 8 coolers full of domestic and imported beers. You can sit in and drink singles or grab a 6 for cash and carry. My wife got a dessert and thought it was good, but not great. Curbside seating is available so on a nice summer afternoon/evening with a cool breeze, it's definitely a place to check out.

Hot mess potatoes yummy next time will get them with over medium eggs. Cute atmosphere. ...waffles and eggs with bacon were delicious also. Next time I am in Philly I will be back.

I rely on my "Generation Y" daughter to know the trendy places to eat in Philadelphia. She finds the place, and I pay for the meal. So Memorial Day day weekend we wind up at Hawthornes in South Philadelphia, one of several "boomer's" in the busy dining area treating their children to a wonderful brunch. My daughter and I ordered two items off the menu that were variations of huevos rancheros. Both a delight. The huevos ahogados consisted of two poached eggs dropped into a Mexican pureed salsa soup. Spicy and divine. My lovely dining companion ordered the pancakes. But warning here. The pancakes at Hawthornes are closer in texture and taste to cornbread than to Aunt Jemima's, the standard by which all great pancakes must be judged. Same with the French toast. Must be a Generation Y thing to mess around with the time-honored, tested and true. (Don't mess with the original!) Hawthornes also boasts a great selection of bottled beers in it coolers. I am a Yuenglings guy, but my daughter cooed upon finding her favorite "hard to find" beer." Must be good because 3 bottles set me back $21. We all left quite pleased -- and feeling very hip!

Wow. I wish I could give this 6 stars!! The food here was unbelievably good!! We had brunch here. I had the Hawthornes omelette. Others at my table had the carrot cake pancakes, the French toast and the crabby dick. This is not your typical breakfast food. The French toast was a baked bread that looked absolutely delicious!! We were all tasting each other's food, and everything was unbelievable. We were all happily stuffed when we walked out. Our only regret is that we couldn't eat any more for the rest of the day!! Don't miss this restaurant !!!

Sometimes you should be happy with the one your with. This rule certainly applies to parade of food streaming out of the kitchen at Hawthorne's. I would call it a semi-spectacle and that might not be an understatement. I found myself envious of every dish that was paraded by that I did not order. We were a foursome anxious to try Hawthorne's after reading about it. While there was a wait to get in (once you get in you will understand) everything was delicious, fresh and created with a slant. Sort of like Mr. Roger's reading a dark twisted novel. You think by reading what's on the menu you know what's coming and what comes is presented like culinary fireworks and tastes even better. We all tried something different. The Elvis Waffles which offered as a menu addition and envied by everyone that didn't order it. Just like Elvis loved peanut and bananas, so did these crisp and lovely waffles. Salty, sweet, heavenly. The Crabby Dick, the name always me laugh, was delicious with nice chunks of crab making up the crabcake (no filler), light artisan bun and two poached eggs serenaded by a Chipotle Aioli. It works very well together. A little light breakfast? Try the Juevos Ahoghados. All the elements mix well to offer a tomatoey, soupy eating / dipping sauce for your tortillas and the side salad is killer. Please put this side salad on the menu as a stand alone, it was an Arugula, Gouda, Potato Salad with a Chipotle Vinaigrette. To be honest it trumped the Ahoghados. The last of our foursome devoured the Chicken and Waffles and offered no complaints as he rendered his meal gone. There is a great selection of beer available, it's a beer cafe after all, which makes for great menu pairing and also great drinking. I found the restaurant cozy, a little bit loud but I equate that as festive and service is friendly and fast. Hawthorne's is a great way to start a Sunday or any day for that matter. We plan to venture back for other meals to see if the spectacle of food continues which I am pretty sure it does.

Breakfast at this place is awesome! You'll find items like chicken and waffles along wih interesting flavors of pancakes and waffles. Bring you own vodka and order a pitcher of their house made bloody mary mix that packs a pretty spicy kick - good even without the vodka. Setting is fun, small tables, lounge area with sofa and fireplace, a great place to stop and have coffee. Servers are attentive and the food is delish. The organic veggie egg white sandwich was also very good! Definitely worth the trip.

This was our second visit to Hawthorne's - we've tried to go some other Sundays but there were many others waiting for tables. Today we went in at about 2 pm and got seated right away. First I must talk about our excellent server. Susan was very helpful, very friendly, very knowledgeable ....absolutely one of the best servers I've had in a long time. She explained their specials, the Beer Week offerings, some of the seasonal beers I might be interested in .... and anything else you needed to know. The menu was a tossup between nice sounding "breakfast" type choices and many sandwiches and other choices -- all at very fair prices. I got the impression that several things are made on the premises (eg "grainy mustard") and that they use a nice selection of breads for the sandwiches. We eventually decided on a "hand carved" roast beef sandwich on a baguette (choose your cheese and choose multiple accompaniments like roasted peppers, tomatoes etc) ....it came with wonderful homemade chips. My husband mentioned the BIG size of his crab cake egg benedict sandwich and loved it. We spent a lot of time staring at the beer case offerings from around the world - so many choices. Everything was delicious and we each had half of our dishes wrapped to bring home. We just unwrapped those for dinner and were immediately reminded of Susan ..... the little box with the half a crab benedict sandwich had "YUM" written on it ....and the half roast beef baguette was securely wrapped with a "Thank You" note on top. Also included ...... a bag of those chips, and as Susan wrote on that crab benedict box, "YUM"

Our party of three sat outside in the cafe-patio area. Service was prompt, attentive and friendly - responding with great suggestions. We loved everything we ordered: spring pea toast (perfect egg and yummy pea spread), pierogies, fried eggplant sammie (mmm basil pesto!), south of the border (perfect eggs!) and blackened mahi mahi tacos (tasty, fresh and spicy - not too blackened). Plus great beers and cocktails (recommend paloma rose tequila). Lovely evening. Recommend.

Excellent brunch. The atmosphere is wonderful, cozy, and warm. The food was amazing. We had the eggs Benedict, scrapple, French toast, and pancakes. Everything was excellent, and prepared to perfection. The beer selection was outstanding as well, featuring highly rated breweries such as Tired Hands. I will definitely be back when I am in town.

Hawthornes has a nice atmosphere (nice fireplace) but terrible food. I would recommend to come for drinks or to hang out with friends but not to eat, plus it is OVERPRICED. The service is standard American.

This little place was around the corner from our B&B and we are so glad we chose it for our last night's dinner in Philly! The food was delicious and the beer selection unbelievable. I had the braised short rib latkes and my fiancé had the steak frites. Both were so tender and amazing and we polished it off with their Hawthorne Shandy. We will definitely come back if in town again!

We were here for the first time, and will definitely come back. All the food was delicious and also the coffee and juices. The staff was not only extremely helpful, but also very friendly. We felt welcomed and comfortable. Thank you again.

We were seated only minutes before a large crowd of people arrived from completing the nearby 10K. Our breakfasts were great and the service was good. It seems to be a very popular place on weekends.

Hawthorne's is open again! My husband and I just had lunch there last week. They have entirely rebounded from last year's fire and are better than ever. Their food is still of the highest quality and their menu is inventive and diverse. A new twist is that in addition the huge beer selection, you can now order wine. It is a wonderful addition!

Food was good though they do use the deep fryer more than I usually eat, all dishes were well prepared and fast to arrive once ordered. It was a great new location to try for brunch

Stopped in for a Hill Farmstead Brewery beer after an ice skating date with the wife. Pleasantly surprised with the decor and attentiveness of the wait staff. Ordered the Flatbread as a snack and it was off the hook. Just get it as your appetizer if you are there for dinner. Will be back soon since we did not realize how close Hawthorne's was located to a relative's home.

This is a nice restaurant. I had the falafel with hummus, pita, and salad. It was very satisfying. The beverage options include beers on tap and a large cooler with a great selection of bottled beers. You visit it whenever you wish during your meal and the charge is added to your tab.

Hawthornes is in a great location. We walked from South Philly and you can walk from Center City. We went for brunch and the food was really good. I had the biscuits and gravy and the biscuit was so good! My husband had the short rib omelet, which of course, I tasted and that too was delicious. I like refreshing cocktails and I chose the "strawberry blonde" which was a strawberry lemonade with a mint infused gin... highly recommended...next time lunch or maybe dinner...

Very quaint restaurant. Outdoor seating. Half price drafts for happy hour were a good deal! $4 happy hour snacks also a good score. Unique menu items. Definitely not your typical fare. Bit on the pricey side, but seems everything in Philly is. This Houston girl always better appreciates our home town cost of living when we travel and experience other cities!

Lunch for two on a Tuesday afternoon so no table wait. Cozy, cheerful dining room. Waitress was helpful and attentive. Had chicken and tuna salad and green salads. Everything was delicious! Nice menu with something for everyone. Great beer selection. This is a neighborhood gem and I wish it were in my neighborhood. Short walk from South Street (near Magic Gardens) where you can eat delicious food and avoid the pizza cheese steak joints on South St. Looking forward to returning for dinner.

Went with some friends on an unusually sunny/mild January Sunday. They only take reservations for six or more, otherwise, it's first come, first serve. We ended up waiting about 45 minutes, but didn't mind as we were prepared for the wait, and they had a nice selection of beer to look at and filled us up on free coffee. Overall the food was executed well, reasonably priced for what we got, and out in a fair amount of time. Nice mix of traditional favorites, like pancakes and french toast choices, to things like chicken and waffles and a variety of soups, which was good for a mixed bunch of picky eaters. I'd suggest going either rather early or waiting to almost the end the brunch period, if you're feeling peckish and want to eat quickly. I noticed during the time we were waiting (height of brunch -- around 12:30 - 2:00 pm) the staff seemed a bit harried, some were *very* pushy regarding keeping a zone clear for staff to bring food in and out...but strangely, that same staff was *not* clearing dishes/closing up checks for folks who definitely were ready to wrap up and leave. If you're the type to get claustrophobic, even with the bright seating area and lots of light, some of the two tops are NYC style close together, which might be an issue for some. Luckily, with four people in our party, we were over in a corner, so it was a tight fit, but great for us!

Great spot for a beer and a bite to eat. Amazing selection, the place was packed and the service was terrific. Really enjoyed the food and will be back for a beer or two!

A really nice option for brunch. If you are a lover of creamed chipped beef, its a MUST here - and huge! Nice menu will make you want to order lots. The cocktails are disappointing and small for the price.

I’ve been here a few times as it’s centrally located and often has an American style menu with a pick out your own beer refrigerator. The pricey menu is what bugs me. I ordered the mahi mahi tacos and was sadly provided two small tacos for $16. My girlfriend got the veggie pot pie which was a tiny bowl of vegetables with a lukewarm pastry placed on top for $15. Fried pickles are $9 and a small salad is $8?! These prices are unusually high and unfair for the customer. There are much better places to eat in the area. Also, every young 30 yr old mother brings their baby here so don’t be surprised when you come for a meal and see 10 baby strollers.

If you want good food with large portions, and a great selection of beer, you will definitely want to make a stop at Hawthorne's Biercafé. My boyfriend and I came in at around 10 am on a Saturday, and the place was about half empty. This made service really quick because we got our food probably within 10 minutes of ordering. This is what we had: Breakfast Poutine (seasoned home fries, topped with gravy, sausage, mozzarella cheese, a fried egg, and green onions) - this was amazing. The home fries were crispy, and the fried egg was the perfect addition. The sausage had a bit of an old leftover taste to it, but the cheese and gravy made up for it. Chorizo and Egg Quesadilla (chorizo, egg, roasted poblano, onion, sharp provolone, served with homefries & cilantro sour cream, ranchero sauce) - this was just okay but I liked that they added cilantro to the sour cream. It gave it that extra flair. Pulled Pork Quesadilla (pulled pork, broccoli rabe, egg, provolone, and blueberry BBQ sauce) - this was the special of the day and I decided to order this on a whim. I was originally going to get the chorizo and egg quesadilla but I figured - let me try something different. And I'm glad I did. It's almost like having a roast pork sammie, but in quesadilla form. I wasn't a huge fan of the blueberry BBQ (which luckily, it came on the side), but I used the gravy from the poutine and it took it to the top. Each quesadilla came with four pieces but by the time we finished the poutine, we were so full that we could only eat one piece each. So keep that in mind if you're ordering one of these - especially since it did not taste good at all the next day. You can also check out their beer fridge and buy some beers to go, but it's on the pricier side.

Although it can be somewhat noisy, if for no other reason, dip into South Philly for some of Hawthornes delicious, crunchy & tasty potato chips & oh, yes, the beers & food are good too! Although we haven't yet sampled the dinner menu, the lunch menu of salads & "freshy" salad sandwiches is creative & selections satisfying - especially when washed down w/ a glass of one or two of the many interesting beers from around the world. For this self-proclaimed connaisseuse of BLTs, the addition of smoked turkey & melted brie on toasted multi-grain earned high marks. The breakfast menu too is creative & varied - even trendy - offering (beyond eggs) quesadillas, a "hot potato mess, & that ol' favorite SOS.

Re-opened after a recent fire, Hawthornes is good as new with a vast array of craft beers, provocative daily omlettes & specials & standards, such as burgers, cooked to perfection & served with a pile of crispy fries.. But call me a cranky old lady - it really annoys me when an overly friendly server repeatedly calls us "you guys" or tries to clear one diner's plate before all others have finished their meals, which is awkward for all & someone's mother should have told them is rude. Adding insult to injury, the music is much too loud & intrusive.

The staff were amazing and super friendly. Really good choice of beers. The food was fab, hubby had steak and I had the veggie sandwich and both were super tasty 😋

Exceptional beer selection. The food might be called upscale greasy spoon. I was a bit disappointed in my falafel sandwich which is billed as a speciality but tasted like out of the box falafel mix. My wife loved a breakfast burrito special packed with chorizo and eggs. Warm and homey atmosphere. The service was pleasant and competent.

Came for brunch on a Saturday and were able to be seated right away and we showed up at noon. Had the choice to sit outside or in - opted for out since it's so beautiful lately. Inside looked cool though. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and a coffee. It was awesome. The bread was a bit hard to bite through so I took everything off and ate it on the plate and just ripped the bread when I wanted a bite. I think there should be an option to eat this on multi-grain bread or something. The chicken salad was fresh. I liked the hot cherry peppers on it - never thought of that before. Homemade chips were good too. So good my friend ate them from my plate as well. He ordered the biscuits and gravy and cleaned his plate. He kept saying how good it was. I didn't taste it but his food looked awesome. The prices are decent too. I was happy. I would come back

Hawthornes is just a nice place to hang out. Especially on a cool, wet December evening with the fireplace going. Thanks to the staff for a nice experience. Wait staff and various other staffers were friendly and competent and my colleague and I enjoyed a very pleasant business dinner with the fireplace as backdrop. The food was good, the wine and beer very nice, and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. Don't want to over think this one too much.... It was perfect for the evening. Thanks!

My husband and I had a delicious breakfast last weekend at Hawthornes- he loved his Hot Potato Mess- he had it with linquica sausage and said it was a perfect combination of flavors. The potatoes in both of our meals were divine... I wonder if they buy organic potatoes because they were so delicious. I had the Crabby Dick Benedict and the crab cake was huge and mostly crab. The poached eggs were served on a soft brioche type roll that was sweet and absorbed the Hollandaise sauce. The servers were professional and welcoming. The food came out fast and the restaurant was spacious and well run.
Local. Fine Food. A Little Loud and Fast.
This is a fine, not too well known, neighborhood beer oriented bistro. The gray and brick motif was inviting and the metal duct work lent character. The place, with it's inventive takes and creative mix of fresh ingredients reminded us of these chef-centered little farm to table places in Seattle we frequented there during our last vacation. Salads were excellent, charcuterie and cheese plate was great and the short ribs and asparagus were top notch. Go for the food, for sure. That said, the music was too loud and so the place became too loud. Biggest quibble: Though we were there for an early dinner and so the restaurant was not packed, the servers seemed to be in a heaving rush to move us along as quickly as humanly possible. We had the charcuterie and cheese first and asked them to hold the ribs as the main course, but the ribs were hustled out well before the (Excellent) cheese and salamis were consumed. One fun fact. At least on the night we were there, every dish and every beer or wine was brought by a different, engaging (interestingly attired) food runner. Not sure if this is policy or happenstance, but it livened up the proceedings.
