A Great Revisit

By Ricki M |

This is a super restaurant easy to underrate as it is in the middle of a strip center and hard to find if you don't know to look. LOOK! The food is spectacular and the service the best. Alex was a gem of a waiter and led us well with choices. We all chose a different entree and each of us was happy.

Delicious

By Waunderlust |

Had the beef fajitas, the meat was as seasoned so well, the taste was on point. A burst of flavor in every bite. My sister had the chipotle enchiladas and she loved it. Our server was a very nice girl. Good place

I love this place!

By Vanessa R |

I recommend the memeladas de pollo. The mole was to die for and so is the flan. Service was a little slow even though they weren't busy but overall the food was great.

Hidden gem in the William Canon area.

By TREVI36 |

This food reminded me of being in Mexico. Authentically tasteful but not overdone with spices. Its a small place but it's been there a long time and you get excellent attention and customer service. Its been a long time since I was undecided on which kind of chicken or sauce to have and the waitperson brought me out each to try first begore I ordered. Music was a little too loud but I think that in about 50% of the restaurants I eat in.

off the beaten path and surprisingly authentic

By Liz S |

This is NOT tex-mex, so don't come here looking for your chuy's enchiladas. Fantastic appetizers and cocktails. A good place for families and where to stop in the neighborhood when you don't want to eat at yet another chain restaurant. I usually order the fish.

Happy Hour Again!

By Darlene H |

My husband and I went to our favorite Mexican Restaraunts happy hour for margaritas and appetizers Friday evening. We shared some beef fajita nachos and ceviche (with white fish and shrimp) and then we shared a flan! Yummy!

Central Mexican done Poorly

By Stu K |

At night you cannot see the restaurant sign, as it is not lighted, and there is a median so don't try to turn left into it. The service was terrible, the waitress did not have a clue, and rushed us unmercilessly. I don't like the check being put down on the table while both diners are eating. My soup was greasy. My wife got the wrong tortillas. The salsa was like watery tomato sauce. I was given a check for the wrong table. My dinner was cold and tasteless. Those are the good parts. If I wanted Mexican this lousy I would have stayed in St. Louis

Wonderful food, service and tequila on William Cannon Blvd. Monica, Mario, Phillippe and staff make you feel part of the family! Very reasonably priced. Friday night had a full house--go early! Go, eat, drink, ENJOY!!!

One of the best true Mexican restaurants in Austin

By Dave B |

We've been to several Mexican restaurants in the Austin area. Hecho takes the top ranks for its mole sauce. Don't pass this up if you are a mole fan. The service is excellant. The salsa is fresh and unique tasting and stands out from the rest in the area. They have any tequila you are interested and host tasting parties on occasion. We make at least two trips there a month and plan to keep going. Keep up the quality Hecho.

Love this place- but not the spinach salad with chicken

By mapleRose |

I've eaten here many times and loved it, so I'll still rate it a 5, but I took someone new to town today and was disappointed. We both ordered the spinach salad with chicken. The other ingredients were as expected, but the chicken was dry and tough.

A Regular Thursday Date Night

By Warren John P |

At least once every two weeks my girlfriend and have a craving for a good margarita and spicy Mexican food. And...where do we go..Hecho en Mexico. Their house margaritas are awesome..and their wide selection of top shelf tequila is amazing. After a drink then we settle into a comfortable tasty meal. We like spicy...so if you are up for it...ask for the habanero salsa. And sit back an enjoy the Thursday night music.

Good margaritas are served here!

By Earthling2108 |

I personally find the food here just ok, although the son of the owner serve our table, he is extremely nice and show case his favorite tequila to is. However, it is the margarita that draw us into this restaurant.

Interior and Tex-Mex; Great Foog and Great Service

By Art G |

I've been to both their Wm. Cannon, and their Steiner Ranch locations. Both are excellent. This time we went to Wm. Cannon and had 2 frozen margaritas ($6), Queso Flameado, which was excellent ($8), beef fajitas, which were far above the norm of other places ($13), and a Dulce Vida Anejo ($9.25). All was excellent. It is a relatively small place in a strip center, but excellent! Our waiter Diego was fantastic! Go!

Hecho en El Bano

By Juan M |

I cannot express how much you need to avoid this establishment. The location was convenient in regard to our hotel and it had great ratings. The restaurant was near empty on a Friday evening. (Red flag #1). I ordered a water and my daughter ordered a Diet Coke, but the waiter said the Diet Coke "wasn't working quite right." When daughter asked the other soft drinks on hand, waiter listed a few bottled sodas which she wasn't familiar with. (Red flag #2). We both got waters and ordered the guacamole as an appetizer while we looked over menu. We were immediately served complimentary salsa, followed shortly by the "in house guacamole." The guacamole was completely unseasoned, as in mashed avocado. No lime, no garlic, no nothing. (Red flag #3) So we decided to have the salsa instead. It was SPOILED. As in, FIZZY. (#4) Paid and left. BEWARE!!!!

Lots of incredible dishes here!

By Hank512 |

WOW! You have to come in and try some incredible interior Mexican dishes here. This was my first trip. I started with Mariscado a la Mexicano-fresh shrimp, scallops, and fish sauteed and served with avacado. It was like a seafood caldo and the flavor was incredible! This place is close to home and this is the beginning of a long friendly relationship. There is an entire wall of Tequila here and I will come back for more in depth research on this topic. Lots of other traditional mole' here to try also. So much variety and authentic flavors to experience here.

Lunch with hubby.

We have eaten here a number of times. Not your traditional tex-mex. lots of different flavors. maybe more interior mexican.

Family owned and operated with a heart

By rb4syth |

Everytime I visit, these folks are so friendly and kind. The food is always prepared by hand and is fresh and delicious. They always make you feel welcome. They always have great art to look and that's for sale, too.

Great Mexican dinning in Austin

By Wally B |

great, authentic Mexican food prepared by owner Mario! we loved the enchladas dinner, cervice, special dessert and FABUOLUS Pecardoras -- all prepared by Mario. Definitely NOT Tex-Mex! We eat there every time we visit friends in SW Austin.

Not as good...which makes us sad

By noodlehouser |

First of all they are now charging a credit card service fee - but isn't posted on the menu. Secondly the food is just not as good. It is convenient for us but there are lots of Mexican options. Wish they would work to get back to caring about customers more. Sad.

Small place but amazing food

By lizama1970 |

Other nice cozy Texas Restaurant outside of downtown Austin. The owner. Mario was the one that server .I ask for hot sauce and he bring me the hot one Chile Havanero for my Regular ceviche that was good , thats why I make me order the Ceviche Campechano

Pretty middle of the road mexican food - catering review

By CopperLeah |

This meal was catered to a conference location for a group of about 30. There wasn't anything spectacular nor overly memorable about the food (honestly I was expecting more from Texas), EXCEPT the avocado jalapeno hot sauce (which was pretty stellar). Because the food was brought in, I don't have any experience with the staff, pricing or restaurant itself. My expectation is that they bring in the "middle of the road, pleases all tastes" food and that ordering in house may be a much better experience (again that hot sauce says they know what they're doing in the kitchen on some level). While the catering experience was "pretty good" I definitely think it would be worth a personal trip to get a better feel for what they have to offer. That being said, the catering experience was pretty average.

New management

By Ruben G |

This restaurant had a change of management since it's original opening at this location and it has helped. The food is very authentic northern Mexico cuisine. The corn tortillas are especially good and they have a decent tequila selection. The restaurant itself is nothing special (in a small strip mall). Even the breakfast menu is good. Worth a second try if you have not been recently.

Reserve the Last Wednesday of Every Month!

By bohemian81 |

This interior Mexican restaurant is tucked in a quiet strip mall in a residential neighborhood and is easy to miss. I believe that before Hecho en Mexico occupied this space, three previous restaurants failed in the same location. But I believe Hecho en Mexico will be the exception. It is dramatically improved since I first visited shortly after they opened. I've been hearing a lot of rave reviews of the food and tequila selections, so I decided to return for their monthly, by-reservation-only tequila tasting dinner. The restaurant closes at 5:00 the last Wednesday of every month so that this family-owned and family-run establishment can host a designated tequila distributor and serve chef-created pairings with the tequilas under that label. It was definitely worth the $38 per person for this meal. The menu of four courses was printed out for each guest as they arrived, and a miniature (albeit, a generous miniature) bottle of the featured tequila was provided at each place setting. The meal on this particular Wednesday began with the best ceviche I've ever had, a spicy and vibrant posole verde, chile relleno with roasted vegetables, and arroz con leche. Regulars of Hecho en Mexico with whom I was seated shared that none of these dishes were on the regular menu, although most agreed they should have been. The only miss of the night was the main course, although I should note I was the only diner at my table of seven who felt that way. The roasted poblano on the relleno was served with its very tough and indigestible skin and was covered with a creamy white mole (mostly almond flavored and too sweet for my taste). The relleno filling was black beans and chorizo, but several diners commented that they were unaware of any chorizo. I think I saw it, but the potency of typical Mexican chorizo was missing. The rice pudding was slightly under-salted but chamomile added interest. The tequila rep spoke of his product with each course, and it was not only enjoyable but informative. It was just dumb luck that on this particular Wednesday the featured tequila was my favorite: Ambhar. I'll definitely return for this event.

NOT Mexican fast food!

By skconsulting |

It may be a small place but the tastes are BIG. Service was very attentive and everyone enjoyed this authentic food preparation. Used a coupon without difficulty which is not always the case.

Always a pleasure!

By Carol A |

Reasonable prices for such a lovely environment and delicious food. A convenient location and accessible parking. The menu is varied offering traditional dishes in a unique way. The service is excellent. Original artwork contributes to the upscale feel of the place. Comfortable and casual yet a touch of elegance. Always a pleasure! Go there.

Fresh Interior Mexico menu

By Ricki M |

This was not my first visit and it won't be my last. This small strip center location consistantly serves nicely presented tasty dishes. The service is excellent and the recommendations right on. Three of us ordered different choices and all three were pleased. The shrimp tacos were excellent on their homemade corn tortillas.

Good Mexican Restaurant in Steiner Ranch

By Laura L |

Low key atmosphere but very good service located right in Steiner Ranch; perfect for those local to the area who want a quick bite. We ordered the beef and chicken fajitas with flour tortillas (one can choose either corn or flour), the queso flameado, and a kids' quesadilla for only $23, so the price is very inexpensive for the area. Plus, the table receives chips and salsa. We were pleased with our order and the portions. It was very standard Mexican fare. Bonus: there is a playground for kids.

I was amazed!

By RazorBee |

After dropping in for breakfast a few weeks ago we discovered the menu had some dishes that I had only seen during travels in Mexico. At that visit the owner gave us samples of three Moles that were surprisingly different from the normal, heavy Tex-Mex versions. We ordered the Chiles En Nogada and Platon De Enchiladas. Both disher were very good. The chiles En Nogada had a cream walnut sauce over a poblano chile stuffed with a spiced pork filling. The only thing missing was the Pomegranate seeds topping as served in Mexico. Of three enchiladas, one had pork filling with a spicy mole with some nice bite to it. One chicken filled with a white mole shrimp broth, peanut and sesame seasoned. A beef enchilada had a light, slightly sweet chile based mole. I will certainly return to try more from the menu

Average

By Marlayna67 |

Not a great experience. Food was mediocre at best. Chips were bland. Surely I made a mistake by ordering a salad at a Mexican restaurant, but hey i was craving some greens - and was disappointed. Service wasn't great. While the server was pleasant enough, we had to call her over every time we needed something: the check, the check to be picked up, etc. When that didn't happen, we had to dig out cash and stop waiting for her.

Happy Hour

By Dwagner98 |

We read, a while back, an article on where chefs, of other restaurants, like to go, other than their & Hecho en Mexico was one of those places. The chef mentioned their margaritas....best in town! Also, happy hour ends at 6:00, but if can get there before then....what a deal!! Some of the best quesadillas & ceviche we have ever had. Don't be in a hurry, everything is fresh & worth the wait!!

Unique food items. Vegetarian friendly

By Elizabeth W |

Please go to happy hour sooner that 6p. It is at 3 to 6. The food was superb and unique. Good vegetarian selection. Had both the Spinach Happy Hour Quesadillas and the Cauliflower appetizers. My husband had shrimp kebabs with pineapple, bacon and other vegetables. The dessert was a most delicious mole ice cream that we split. All in all a great meal.

We love this place!

By Dorothy C |

We have many, many amazing choices of restaurants in this great city, yet we keeping coming back to Hecho. We stumbled upon it when we first moved to Austin, thinking it was a store featuring Mexican products. We're so happy we were wrong. We LOVE their tapas combo platter (available on Thursdays) and their molcajete. Their Mexican martinis are pretty awesome, too. I first encountered my favorite tequila, Abandonado extra anejo, here, too. Thursdays also feature a lovely guitar/drum duo. Someday we'll be back for their special tequila dinner. This is authentic interior Mexican food--a delightful change from the Tex-Mex you find everywhere in Austin.

Authentic Mexican Food!

By LA Lloyd |

Most of the Mexican restaurants in Austin all predominantly serve up Tex-Mex. Now while I love that occasionally, I always go back to my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant Hecho en Mexico. It's name literally is translated to "Made in Mexico." And they definitely live up to their name. Every entree is great and I've nearly tried all of them. Also, they have daily specials on cocktails but my go-to is always the Rita on the rocks! So good. This place is quaint and will have musicians occasionally, playing near the bar, with the perfect blend of traditional Mexican music to accompany your meal. It is small as I mentioned so expect a wait especially later in the week and weekends. Is it worth it? You bet!

Happy Hour Again

By Darlene H |

My husband and I have always enjoyed the happy hour specials at our neighborhood Mexican restaurant, and we weren’t disappointed! Excellent frozen margaritas, Ceviche, Taquitos al Pastor, and Quesadillas de Espinacas. Unfortunately, we were both too stuffed to have dessert! I would have loved to have the Flan.

Euthentic Mexican Food

By steno225 |

Not your traditional tex mex. Located in a strip center but easy to spot from road. Small establishment with a tequila specialty bar. The waiter did a great job of explaining items on the menu. The chips and salsa were crisp and flavorful. I had the cheese enchiladas with cilantro sauce served with black beans and rice. My husband had the beef enchilada Mexican flag plate. This plate was served with 3 different sauces plus the rice and beans also. The portion sizes were large. I would recommend this place to my friends and would come here again.

Enshrined in the Mole Hall of Fame

By ron m |

Three kinds of mole- each from scratch, served over their flavor companion: shrimp, chicken, pork. Authentic is a often abused term in food; not so here. This is how mole is done in Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende by people who grew up there. Real mole is made from two dozen ingredients over up to 36 hours- as this is. If all you have tasted is the brown glop out of a jar that calls itself mole you are in for a flavor explosion. If you know real mole and haven't tried their's- just do it. How to finish off the meal-Mole Ice cream?- yep they make it, rich and nice spice finish.

‼️Wonderful Happy Hour‼️

By Darlene H |

This is a I Family owned neighborhood Mexican restaurant that specializes in interior Mexican Food. My husband and I always enjoy the margaritas and half price appetizers at happy hour. Our favorite are the Taquitos al Pastor and crevice. This place is only 5 minutes from home - so convenient! It's our favorite Mexican restaurant to take out of town company to. Their food and service are very consistent!

Another Former Favorite That Has Declined

By Eurotex |

I’ve eaten here dozens of times in the past 12 years. Like a lot of businesses, products and services, it’s not the same as it was. Starting with broken tortilla chip shards and too-mild salsa served in a shallow (1/4-inch deep) spoon rest, even the premium margaritas were not special, I felt the loss of a restaurant I used to love. Nothing else to say. Go there for interior Mexican food, maybe the past quality will return after we get past this pandemic. I’m a lucky man as my wife is a great cook and my best meals are those at home. I doubt that I will drop another $70 on dinner for two because the good niche restaurants at that price are disappearing.

I give them a six out of ten

By T W |

In my opinion, the food and drinks taste watered down compared to the thousands of Mexican food meals I have eaten. The Queso Flameado was runny. Food was ok tasting but, not what I expected for the price ($39 for Fajita for two). Staff was friendly and restaurant was orderly but, duck your head when entering so you don't hit your head on the Now Hiring sign hanging at the entrance. The big disappointment was when I looked at my receipt and saw they charged me a $5.25 convenience fee, I guess for using my credit card. I will not return !!

Return Visit - Great Happy Hour, Dinner a bit meh

By Paul M |

Went to dinner early and happened to catch Happy Hour. Their margaritas are excellent! So is the queso flameado. However, dinner itself was disappointing compared to my previous visit. Fajitas which I remembered as great were only meh (perhaps because I ordered pork loin instead of beef). I will be back, particularly if I can catch happy hour.

Great little "Mexican Place."

By Paul M |

Very good. Went here when wait looked ridiculous at Chuys. No regrets at all. Indeed, I'll be going here instead.

Excellent Tex-Mex

By MPH200 |

We have been there twice now. Both times were great. Beautiful presentation. We had the beef fajitas for 2 last visit. Very tender & great flavor. First visit I had the Tortilla soup & my Wife had the Bandera enchiladas. Black beans are very good & great salsa. Great variety of interior Mexican type food such as mole as well. The service is very efficient & friendly. Great happy hour & excellent margaritas. There is even a $27 margarita if you are so inclined. http://www.hechoenmexico-restaurant.com/

authentic, different

By mbreternitz |

authentic mexican (NOT tex-mex). Try the mole sauce dessert (the pepper and ice cream make a nice combination). several reasonably priced lunch choices.

Less than stellar...

By Brian J |

My wife and I went there for dinner for the first time, but will not be returning. Our server was slow, disinterested and far from customer-centric - we had to actually hunt him down on more than one occasion. Sadly, the food was - at best - mediocre. The guacamole was tasteless and seriously overpriced. My enchiladas were undercooked, the sauce watery and without flavor. A big disappointment.

Still a great time and place in Oak Hill

By SEMPER F |

I went there for lunch for the first time in several years. The time lapse wasn't due to any problem; just happenstance. I had the Chile Rellenos and two of my favorite Mexican cocktails, Vampiros. They also make a ghost pepper salsa that get's your attention. My friends had the cheese enchiladas. They also tried the Vampiros. The staff is super cordial and efficient.

Really good mexican food

By nonnino |

I've been to this restaurant at least three times in the last year. Always very pleased with the service and quality of the food. Not just "tex-mex" style, but many gourmet mexican dishes you cant find in a taco-bell style place. Homemade guacamole, chiles rellenos, and queso flameado are to die for !

Update on Tequila-Tasting Dinner

By bohemian81 |

Since my first review of the tequila-tasting dinner more than a year ago, we have returned for these events four more times. We were just starting to consider ourselves "regulars." Unfortunately, our fifth visit will likely be our last. Just like other tastings, the venue was packed, and the food was inventive and very good. I even enjoyed food courses I didn't think I'd like from reading the menu description. The July 2017 event, however, felt a bit like a "bait-and-switch" enterprise. We had reserved online and received email confirmation for our visit. The restaurant's website did not offer any notification of the increased cost for this particular event, nor did the confirmation email from Monica alert attendees that the cost for this meal would be considerably higher than previous events. (When we started attending, the cost per person was $38 for four courses and beverages. Shortly thereafter, the price increased to $44. That's what we were expecting on this occasion.). Eight of us reserved seats and enjoyed the food, tequila presentation, and company. When the checks were delivered to each couple, we found, without warning, that the cost per person was $70 (that's with tax). When guests are expecting to pay $44 and receive a bill for $70, sticker-shock sets in. I asked Monica about my bill, certain she would say it was in error, and she replied this event cost more because it was "special." I sure would have appreciated a heads-up about the "special" cost. With the tip, we walked out of there spending $160, and in no way was that a $160 meal. I made a comment about "sticker shock" as I was getting up from my seat to leave, and the large table of guests seated behind me overheard my remark. All agreed with me. I enjoyed my meal with my friends, and the Number Juan Tequila was fine. But the experience related to the billing completely ruined the evening for me. It's simply not worth it for us to return. I notice their tequila-tasting events are still selling out, so evidently the July event didn't hurt their business.

Absolutely delicious!

By SharmonOBX |

Hecho en Mexico on William Cannon is one of my husband's and my favorite restaurants! I favor the Queso Flameado with mushrooms, peppers and onions. My husband orders the Mole sauce selections. We eat here often and have always found the service outstanding! This is a friendly, neighborhood type place to eat, relax and enjoy.

Interior Mexican, NOT Tex-Mex

By texastransplant03 |

This place is a treasured, little-known-secret of the Mexican food scene in Austin, which can be overwhelming. Hecho en México serves authentic, quality, delicious, beautiful and affordable *interior* Mexican cuisine. Forget fatty, fried dishes loaded up with cheese, dumped on a hot plate with a side of refried beans. That's Tex-Mex, and ATX has plenty of places that tout that style. Flavors at Hecho are subtle and clean, and the presentation of entrees is exceptional. We love the ceviche, mole, and pibil dishes. Great drinks, too.

Your belly will thank you :)

By Heather L |

Sooo DELICIOUS! Every time we visit the food is consistently flavorful and delicious. The service is personal; they remember us. If they do not know you, they are happy to meet you. Here at Hecho en Mexico, you are a welcome guest. The recipes are from family cooking and may inspire favored memories of times past. I love eating here. It is a joy to visit a restaurant where I can order something from the menu that triggers happy memories from my childhood. Bravo to this eatery!

Molles best!

By Scott J |

What a great place! Tacos postre, flamiata, 3 mole enchiladas Mexican cocktails are super! Super friendly service!

Made in Mexico. . . to Eat in Austin

By markstorey |

I've been here for a couple of lunches, and a couple of dinners, and LOVED all of them, every time. The service has been very good, the salsa is spicy, the shrimp are an oxymoron, the Margaritas are healthy, and I'll be back! Oh, and if it's not too crowded, walk around and enjoy the beautiful artwork around the room!

Really excellent Mexican Food!

By glennroid |

Top notch traditional Mexican food. Had lunch here for the first time in quite some time with a friend recently. Can't imagine why I hadn't been back because this place is really a gem. This isn't traditional Tex-Mex (which I love too). It's more interior Mexico cuisine. I had a lunch of chicken enchiladas. I asked and was pleased to find out that they were all white meat. Everything about the meal was just great. The enchiladas were perfect. The chicken was moist and tender. The sides of charro beans and rice were marvelous too. All in all an excellent meal and quite reasonable too. Now that I remember, I'll be going back again. Soon.

Taste of Mexico

By pdSixty8 |

Trying to fill in a gap for my Mexican restaurant rotation I wanted to return to Hecho En Mexico. It has been a while since I have eaten here and perhaps too long. So for lunch I walked in to see plenty of seating. A server came by to give us menus and take our drink orders. I had to ask for a drink menu. The regular menu had lots of interesting choices and had a separate lunch list. The lunch menu was good enough for me and ordered beef enchiladas and black beans. I studied the drink menu and noticed they have not margarita machine so everything was on the rocks. The also have an interesting flavor of margaritas which included guava, strawberry, watermelon, mango, raspberry, and peach. I decided on getting a Modelo Especial beer which was given a can and a chilled beer glass. We were provided with with chips and salsa, and my wife ordered queso to dip the chips in. The chips were very tasty and enjoyed the salsa. It was not too spicy. The cheese was not bad either. Next our food arrived and it looked great. Very hot plates and gave one taste of the enchiladas, and it was excellent. The style here is not Tex mex but more traditional Mexican. This place is also a bit upper scale where they have higher end tequilas here and dinner choices. This is towards a place to take you special one for a nice dinner out The food was very good and see why everyone in my neighborhood loves this place. I will definitely add this place to my routine Friday lunch restaurant rotation.

The manager, Monce, was very helpful and kind. She went above and beyond to make sure it was a good dining experience! Delicious food and margaritas! Hecho En Mexico is a hidden gem for sure.

Must try!

Food, drinks, service, and prices are amazing. We love to have the happy hour specials (appetizers till 6 1/2 price). Their Margaritas are the best (Top shelf).

Only been Twice but am Going Back!!!

By Tim H |

Oh My Gosh! What a surprise to sit down to an Interior Mexico style steaming hot plate of pollo con mole, or enchiladas con mole. A taste of the Zona Rosa right here in SW Austin. So tasty and well-seasoned that these entrees just might rival those served at Fonda San Miguel also here in Austin on the Nothside of the river. The smallish floor plan of Hecho is maxed out on weekend prime dinner hours. You might go early at 6 pm or wait until 8:30 after the stampede has blown through so your wait time is shorter. Believe me, you will not be disappointed from your first bite to your last! The wait persons are friendly, patient with your questions, and will even bring samples of the various sauces for you, upon request, to taste before ordering! Full bar with imported cervesas. A great date spot but is also family friendly. Attire Austin - casual. Prices are moderate to moderate +

Just Like It Says: "Made in Mexico"

By Randol B |

... or, at least, "Made Mexican Style". In a land of Tex-Mex like Austin, it's wonderful to have a marvelous interior Mexican restaurant so nearby. The food here is uniformly excellent -- homemade tortillas, salsa and guacamole -- and everything is fresh and carefully seasoned. Oh, yes -- they have the best Queso Flameado (Chili con Queso in other spots) I've ever had. Get the version with mushrooms and peppers. To die for. The other miraculous offering here is not one but THREE distinctly different forms of mole (even one of which you often can't get at your regular Tex-Mex spots). There's an enchilada plate that lets you sample all three varieties, each enchilada containing a different, complimentary meat. There's a WALL of varieties of Tequila at this place as well ... and the other night when I was there I saw an array of shot glasses full of various types being distributed around the restaurant. This is a great place to eat, and not terribly expensive. I love Fonda San Miguel across town as much as I do this establishment ... but the prices are cheaper and there's rarely any trouble getting seated as soon as you walk up. Enjoy. You'll be glad you took the plunge with this one.

Have to go back again

By FrankWill |

Have seen this restaurant numerous times, decided to check it out and we were not disappointed, good menu choices (7 different moles) tried the Mancha Manteles with chicken , nicely spiced with charro beans/rice. Wife had the fajitas, they were good, not spectacular but plenty. Good Mexican specialties so we need to go back and try the other moles as well, good tequila choices as well and the regular Mexican beer choices. Place had a nice vibe, pleasant atmosphere, will go back

Authentic and just right

By jonathonlevy |

This neighborhood restaurant is known for its authentic representation of a variety of Mexican mole dishes-- not just the typical mole you see in most Mexican restaurants but a whole variety of moles, including a white one. On this visit however I opted for one of their medium spicy dishes-- the Pescado Veracruz-- and found it extraordinary. The fish was a Tilapia, fresh from market (not frozen) and broiled to perfection, then smothered with a spicy but not too hot sauce with lots of veggies, and served with carrots, broccoli and a flavored rice. The price was very reasonable. Ended the meal with a flan, uniquely served and constituted, again unlike the typical Mexican restaurant flans you see so often in Austin.

It was good....

By Happy130 |

We just happened to stop at this restaurant on our way to the airport after a short visit in Austin. The atmosphere is great and the employees were super. The food was o.k., but just did not have much taste. We were very surprised that it tasted so bland, as you could tell it was made to order and fresh.

Great Mexican!

By Josh12_12 |

We stopped at Hencho de Mexico and we were thrilled by the authentic food. I had tacos de pescado that were delicious 😋

Not the Same

By E1030RSfrankb |

4th visit over the last 2 years. It was a Wednesday night and we arrived just as the first crowd was leaving. Ordered drinks and an appetizer of queso. Queso arrived 5 minutes before drinks and was cold. Drinks were great. We ordered the steak and pork in Banana leaves. The steak was tough and tasteless. Last time or was incredible. The pork was good, the beans were under cooked and bland. The waitress was not young but seemed either inexperienced or just did not care. Will try again in a few months to see if the downturn in service and food quality is permanent or just a bad night.

My Birthday Happy Hour

On my birthday, my husband and I went to our neighborhood Mexican restaurant so I could have one of their wonderful margaritas at happy hour. We shared Beef Fajita Nachos and Tacos al Pastor. We always enjoy going for their half price appetizers at happy hour and it’s always more than we can eat. It’s happy hour every day of the week at Hecho en Mexico!

Surprisingly good

By AustinEEE |

Don't be fooled from the road--yes this place is in a strip mall, but you'll soon forget that as soon as you step in the door to find a nicely appointed restaurant. We immediately found the service welcoming and very helpful, and that continued throughout the meal. We honestly only ordered small dishes and margaritas, but we found the menu refreshing with dishes that go a little beyond the typical Mexican offering. The drinks and food were both tasty and we plan on returning to explore the menu more. Leaving we got a thank you not only from the wait staff but also the kitchen. Give it a try, we think you'll enjoy it.

Awful

By jpolo65 |

So, we made a reservation for 16, and we were told that we had to be on time. They said after 15 minutes we would lose it. We arrived exactly in time. They had given our table away. Then said they would seat us in a few minutes. 20 minutes later, after we waited outside in the sticky humid weather, they had still ignored us, so we left!!!

Moles are one of their specialties so give them a try!

By bigthicket |

Love this restaurant with it's very traditional food. At lunch, you can order from either the lunch or dinner menu. The waitress encouraged me to try something from the orange section of the dinner menu since those items are their specialties. I had heard about their moles so when I saw the Platon de Enchiladas which was a sampling of 3 different moles paired with the best type of meat for that mole, I knew that was what I had to order. They were all delicious but my very favorite was the enchilada prepared with the plantain/sweet potato and pineapple in a chile ancho mole. Yum!

Big-time food in a cozy neighborhood location

By Steve Y |

If you are looking for good Mexican food but are tired of big chain restaurants, this is the place for you. Hecho is the kind of neighborhood place where you can become a regular and feel like family. The food is varied, reasonably priced and very good, and the Margaritas are great. The chips and sauce are adequate, but not stellar. I recommend going with a group so you can order and try several different things. So far I have tried and enjoyed the Ceviche Campechano, Queso Flameado, Caldo Tlalpeno soup and the Platon de Enchiladas, a sampler of all three of their moles. They also have nightly specials, like Monday House Ritas for only $4, and a Tequila Dinner on the last Wednesday of each month. Some nights they even have featured artists performing great music. So come early to avoid the crowd and enjoy a great meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

Delicious Interior Mexican Food!

By hungryGF |

Waitstaff is courteous, knowledgeable and efficient. Food is always fresh and interesting and I am able to enjoy vegan, gluten free options. Drinks are a bit pricey, so pace yourself.

Great Food in an Intimate Environment

By Jim P |

My wife and two adult daughters had a quiet Sunday evening meal. It is a small restaurant, but the food was great. I had a great chili relleno, we shared a great guacamole. Fajitas were shared.

Maybe the best Mexican resturaunt in Austin

By ramicha |

Don't be fooled by the modest location and appearance of Hecho En Mexico Restaurant, which is located in a small strip shopping area. The menu is well beyond the usual Mexican items. It may take a few trips to find which of the many excellent items you like best. There are many very interesting selections to try. Hecho En Mexico Restaurant also has one of the best Mezcal and Sotol selections in Austin as well as reasonably good regular margaritas. .

Best Meal of the trip!

By Lee4 |

We ate lunch here once & truly wished that we would have had time to go back. The food here is fabulous! We had lunch specials with enchiladas & my husband & I both thought they were some of the best we've ever had. The meat & sauces were cooked so well & the sauces complemented the meat, rather than overpowering it. Excellent restaurant & should not be missed if you're in that part of Austin.

A Favorite Destination For Real Mexican Food

By Gail B |

The food and drinks at this little strip center restaurant are always good. It's a welcome break from Austin's ubiquitous Tex-Mex eateries. Their mole sauces are all delicious and the Chilis en Nogados is one of our favorite dishes there. A family friendly place where service is always friendly and efficient.

Mole Ole

Quaint and charming ambiance. I tried the enchilada plate featuring 3 types of mole, authentic and flavorful. Beans and rice were fluffy and tasty. Blue corn tasted homemade and exceptional. Chips were light, toasty and fresh!

A Nice Meal

By JHtoAtXmom |

I had a great visit at Hencho En Mexico on William Cannon. This is a restaurant that consistently gets good ratings and we wanted to check it out. I ordered pastor tacos. I loved the flavor, but I was not happy with the blue corn tortillas. As a gluten free eater, one of my favorite things is a nice, fresh tortilla, a regular corn one. The quality of this experience would have improved tremendously if I had a nice, fresh tortilla. This tortilla felt like it came from a bag from HEB. Everything else was perfect, particularly our server, who couldn't have been nicer. I will definitely go back, but I will try something else. My husband had migas tacos and he said they were excellent. They have iced coffee too, which was great!

Amazing food in low key setting

By michele m |

Located in a small strip mall on the western end of William Cannon, this restaurant is a stunning find! Cute space on the inside, full bar with 80 varieties of tequila, and "interior" Mexican food. Flavors and tastes I've never had. The entire menu looks fantastic. We ordered the queso fundido with mushrooms and poblano peppers, and a breaded cauliflower appetizer. Shared the salmon with tequila sauce...came in an aluminum foil packet, cooked with carrots, broccoli and onions, with a spicy red sauce. On the side, this surprise flavor of a white sauce with tequila, onions and mushrooms. Everything was delicious. So good, we ordered two of the chicken mole dishes to take home for dinner. The Mancha Manteles, and the Mole Poblano, with sides of rice, beans and sauce. Great service, inexpensive food (and happy hour from 3-6 every day), and crazy great tasting to boot! Now firmly on the list of places to eat on a regular basis. A 10!!

We were delighted with this cozy dining spot. Intimate setting, great food, attentive wait staff, and quiet atmosphere. We stumbled here as we traveled from the airport to our hotel and what a serendipitous find!

My fitness group traveled to Austin for the Foam Glow 5K, and it was suggested by a member to have dinner here....EXCELLENT FOOD!!! Made the six-hour drive back to Oklahoma....."Interesting" though. STILL highly recommended!!!

Authentic

By James W |

Although very clean the atmosphere is nothing special. However, they are cookin' REAL Mexican. Unlike all the fake places I've eaten in. Also they have a well stocked bar.

Loved the live music!

Was there on a recent Thursday and could not get enough of the live musica tropical -- and the guacamole!

The Best Mexican Food in Austin

By TexasToInternational |

I love this place! I have been here many times for breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner. I have never been disappointed. The prices are very reasonable and the food is out of this world. Here's a list of my favorites. Breakfast - spinach and chorizo omelet. Lunch - Carne Pibil. Happy Hour - Many awesome beers on tap and Mariscada a la Mexicana - shrimp, calamari, scallops, and fish sautéed with fresh pico de gallo. Outstanding!! Dinner - Mole Pablano. Give this place a try. You won't regret it.

Tequila

By Jensoid |

It's lovely that a good restaurant has opened where the old Giss's restaurant used to be. Never could get myself to eat in a restaurant that was named after something left on the floor of a 70's Adult Film set. Anyhow.... Salsa is different than everything I have tasted before. What makes it unique is the chile's they use. If I remember correctly.. sorry I enjoyed three of their watermelon special rita's tonight...Arbor chile is the base and a sweeter chile whose name just escaped me was added. We noshed through a bowl and half. Chips were thicker than most I have had with a great corn taste to them.....Happy Happy Joy Joy dance. Items we have had and my thoughts: Par de Huaraches: Cactus.. first time I have had this, and it was yummy with a scoop of their Salsa on it. Ceviche: Was not as good as I expected, and seemed really over limed if that is possible. Might of been made the day before and steeped to long. I'm willing to give it another shot. Taquitos al Pastor: Greasy, flavorful, and five to an order, which is plenty to share. Pescado a la Veracruzana: Excellent fresh fish with crisp veggies in the Veracruzana sauce, served on a banana leaf. Classy, fresh and lite. Pollo en Mole Blanco with Chicken: Mole was tasty with a deep rustic flavor and the Chicken Breast was cooked to perfection. Enchiladas de Espinacas: Awesome in flavor with sauteed mushrooms, garlic and almonds. It is quite rich with flavors and possibly some of the best I have ever had. A dish which wasn't even on the menu since my boss wanted something very hot and spicy with meat. What arrived was sorta like a pork and beef stew with many different chile's in it.. it was HOT, and yet surprising tasty. The chiles all worked well as one. It was a really grand gesture by the owner to even put this together. Desserts we have had: Nieve de Mole: Holy Crack... Ice Cream with the Mole sauce.. so refreshing and an interesting combination of flavors Crepas de Limon con Salsa de Zarzamora: The creamy lemon sauce on the crepes was full of zest.. crepes were a little thick, but still soft and tender to the bite Pestel de tres leches con Changos Zamoranos: Dear God.. this is what milk was made for.. Thank goodness for cows..creamy, sweet delicious sauce, crumbling cake to soak it all up.. I have to get the recipe for the tres leches. Look, this is a local, small restaurant, trying to do well in a tough economy. It is a stumble, drop and crawl from my casa. We will continue to patronize it and enjoy the great, caring service. Watching them make little mistakes as they grow into a wonderful experience. So, get off your couch, take off the snuggie which you are filling with farts, and check it out

Awesome breakfast tacos!

By jigglymills |

Got a little hungry after physical therapy and we decided to drop in to check out the breakfast tacos! Yum! We got there, ordered them to go, made fresh, and had some great salsa. Not spicy, but a nice red salsa. Checked out the menu and will definitely have to go back for lunch & dinner. The gentleman who took our order was very friendly and answered all our questions about the menu items. Their desserts are made at the restaurant and he recommended the Tres Leches and the Limon Crepes. The ice cream with mole sounded interesting! Must have another meal there!!! This is NOT tex-mex, yea!

Solid Mexican fare

By sandmrhodes |

I have been to Hecho en Mexico about 6 times now. I have never been disappointed. The service is spot on. The location is great because it is 5 minutes from my house. I went recently with a friend and my two teenage children. We had the queso with chorizo. It is melted Monterey Jack cheese with chorizo. Not for dipping, but for layering in a tortilla and eating like there is no tomorrow. I won't taint your opinion with a specific food item, but suffice it to say that everything that I have tried has been above average. I will go there again and again.

Obscenely LOUD music. Food is good

By joelinda |

The music is so loud that it is impossible to have a dinner conversation. Children can’t eat inside. They will cry because it hurts their ears.

Best Authentic Mexican Food Restaurant in South Austin

By Gail B |

This is our favorite go-to small, neighborhood family restaurant. Their dishes are all authentic and tasty. One of our favorites is chiles en nogado. Margaritas are some of the best in Austin. There is a nice variety of dishes and their sauces are very authentic and good. Service is always friendly and efficient. A great family restaurant. Highly recommended.

Excellent Food & Great Value!

By misopiso88 |

We were staying in South Austin and went to Hecho based on a recommendation from a local. We showed up with 9 people and they happily accommodated our large party quickly. The food was excellent and prices were reasonable. They have a terrific kids menu too. Try the mole!!! DELISH! We will definitely be back!

Mexican food authentic and flavorsome

By ChefMarkoEsteban |

This is my first trip to Austin since I've been here I've had many texmex and Mexican food all claim to have authentic cusine but none like Hecho en Mexico. We ordered many dishes and each one was better then any other I've had. No comparison .. its a small qaint but well worth it. I recommend it to all looking for a great authentic cusine .

Trying out someplace I've passed by often

By Edward W |

My wife and I decided to try this restaurant this past Saturday as an alternative to driving over to our usual go-to which is Curra's on Oltorf. Very pleasantly surprised and a bit unhappy that we passed by so many times without stopping. We started with the Queso, which was excellent, very thick and tasty with taco meat at the bottom of the dish. My wife is a Mole fan and their Plato de Mole with three different variations turned out to be a great choice. I had a chicken enchilada mix which I enjoyed. Good Margaritas at a reasonable price. We'll be stopping back soon. We left just as the live music started, but that's another possible reason to enjoy this small gem. Our waiter Felipe was very pleasant and helpful with the dinner selections. Always nice to find good service, good food and good drinks together in one place.

Best breakfast ever!

By Jordan P |

My friend and I are passing through Texas and decides to stop in! So glad we did because the food is incredible and our waitress Luz is so friendly and accommodating! Definitely go here!

Very good food and service

By AustinEEE |

This really feels like a family run restaurant (not sure if it is or not) given their level of service and attention to the cusotmer. The food is a bit more varied than the typical local mexican place, and very good. My wife loves the margaritas, a topic she has a definite opinion on.

Great neighborhood find

By mrandmrshill |

Ate here based on verbal recommendation from family, and it turned out to be good one. This is in no-frills strip center location, which is not very visible from street, as it sits low. Parking can be pretty limited if they and other adjacent businesses are busy. Food is interior Mexican, so minimal seafood and no hideous TexMex influence. Hecho en Mexico was busy, but we were seated in reasonable amount of time. Food was fresh and flavorful, and arrived quickly even though they were busy, and service was very good. Server was Perla. Ordered Mole Poblano, Ceviches Campechano, a Saturday special I can't recall, Chile en Nogada (me; never had before), and kids quesadilla. Four adults and a toddler ate for $70.91+ tip, which included 3 beers and 1 margarita. One comment on my Chile en Nogada: Not sure whether it was supposed to be served this way, but main part of entree was hot but cream salsa was less than room temperature. Would have preferred that salsa be hot like main part. Nevertheless, we'd go again.

My Secret Place

By dirtroadgirl |

Bar none, THE best interior Mexican cuisine in Austin. Not to mention the hospitality and personal service.

Great Family Restaurant

By Larry W |

Love this restaurant -- friendly/helpful staff, menu blend of standard Mexican fare and interesting options such as Chili de Nogato and a selection of outstanding moles, We'll be back.

Execellent Mexican food

By DAPJr112 |

I went here for a rehearsal dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, as noted earlier, more traditional Mexican than Tex-Mex. I enjoyed the appetizers, the salmon was terrific as a main course, and the margaritas were great!

An unexpected surprise

By Al E E |

We were looking for a good Mexican food place to eat around Austin and Googled Canyon Café. The directions took us out in the middle of nowhere, with no restaurant. Turns out there isn't one in Austin. So we Googled again and found this one. When you walk in it's not too impressive. But the food is great. Authentic Mexican food, not Tex Mex. My wife had this thing in banana leaves that was outstanding. I had tacos. Very good. Very attentive service. I would recommend it.

Decent Chili Verde

By Gary T |

We stopped in for lunch on a weekend and the place wasn't busy at all. My wife tried the set (Soup, Main and Desert) @ $12 and she chose the Comida Corrida Alambres. She enjoyed her meal but didn't think it was anything special. I ordered the lunch "Plato de Enchilada" beef with charro beans. My plate was delivered with re-fried beans and we ere in a hurry so I settled for them. The enchilada was in a corn wrap and the contents were ground meat mixed with carrots. I would not have enjoyed this meal except that the Chili Verde sauce was New Mexico style and tasty. I'm not sure about their dinner menu but the lunch line up leaves a lot to be desired. At $12 for the set, it is not a good value. The Enchilada at $8 would have been a decent buy if I had of enjoyed it.

Very good Mexican food

By SooperDuty |

Food was excellent. More traditional Mexican than Tex Mex. We had the margaritas, made with fresh limes. Very good! Appetizers were the taquitos al pastor. Yum. We shared the chicken fajitas. Serving size is quite ample for two. Staff was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was packed and we had a 15 minute wait. Live music was played. Restaurant is small. Full bar.

Relaxing Sunday Brunch

By whbjr |

Early Sunday afternoon was just the right time to come, a popular time but still no wait for a table. We had a side of guacamole to go with the chips and salsa; the guacamole was a bit bland, but adding salsa to it made for a flavorful combo. My wife had the Enchiladas Banderas with chicken, and enjoyed all three sauces. It was a nice, big serving, enough to bring home leftovers! I had breakfast tacos: Diego, with a tasty but unidentified fish fillet and wonderful chipotle sauce, and Monse, with nopalitos chopped into the scrambled egg. Very good food, and the staff is always skilled and friendly.

Food was bland and dry

By Ann Z |

This place is way overrated. Went for dinner on a Friday evening and ordered enchiladas. The dish was very dry and bland. My guest ordered the burro norteno with chicken. The chicken was bland almost tasted like it was boiled. Won’t be returning.

Delicious

By ceceliainDC |

Went for their monthly tequila tasting. It was 4 courses and paired with a cocktail or tasting of a different brand each month. The food was great. The service was great. It's a small venue, packed full and a lively gathering. I'm sure it's much more tame on most nights and just as tasty.

Delicious

Excellent food and superior service. We treated our Australian cousins to a meal; they thought it was the best food they had ever eaten.

Excellent meal in a strip center

By Sara G |

Ok, I have to admit, I am a snob when it comes to strip mall restaurants; I usually won't go. I have ignored the coupons that came pleadingly in my mailbox for over two years. But last weekend I caved, and I ever glad I did. From the outside, the tinted windows hide the stainless steel bar with walls lined with over 85 different tequilas. We dropped in for a late lunch and I was so happy to see three different types of mole on the menu. I chose the Platon de Enchiladas which offered three slim enchiladas, each with a different mole. I took the waiter's suggestion of different meats with each and it was the right choice. The white mole, made with crushed almonds was out of this world! Loved the pairing of the spices with plantains and pineapple with the chile ancho mole. My sweetheart had the Burro Norteda and was equally happy. They have Happy Hour from 3-6 seven days a week. We will definitely be back for the Tequila Tasting dinners the last Wednesdays of the month. Yum!

Neighborhood gem

By Balinder |

Love this place. Excellent food. If you are out looking for quality Mexican food, this is the place! Little out ways from downtown, but worth driving for foodies. Glad we live close so easy for us to drive down. They have variety of tequilas that always help sipping quality tequila and enjoying Mexican cuisine. Our server Carlos now waited on us couple of times is very efficient. That's all you need an efficient server to have great food, great conversation with your company. Also they have ghost pepper hot sauce, hot and very flavorful.

Central Mexico flavors north of the border

By Bonesdug1 |

In Austin and most of Texas you can get a regular diet of Tex-Mex mexican style food. And all over Austin you can find a lot of variations. What makes this place different is the use of Mole. They have multiple types and styles, The first time i went they were very traditional to Mexican cuisine you might find in DF. ( for those in the know thats Mexico City to a local) ( Day Effie if you want to get phonetic.) Lots of new kinds of flavors and mixes of flavors, and some nice new kinds of salsa and some quite hot versions as well. This is a great place to try out. Small place may be busy but worth a visit. If you have tried Mole and its not for you be sure and ask what is on the plate. Also the menu has changed a bit since they opened and it is leaning more to the tex mex flavors that are more common. That may be to location and clientelle, if most are not ordering then you might change a bit to keep in business. I am hoping they stay with the traditional and maintain the unique flavors they offer this far north.

Wonderful Happy Hour

By Darlene H |

My husband and I and my sister and brother-in-law enjoyed some half price appetizers and Margaritas for happy hour during their visit to Austin before Christmas. We were able to enjoy most of our favorite dishes and literally stuffed ourselves! The margaritas are just $4 and appetizers are half price during happy hour. Nachos, cerviche, guacamole, taquitos al pastor, a cauliflower dish and two desserts! WOW! We love this neighborhood restaurant that is owned by a family and we've never been disappointed when we eat here! Their waiters are very efficient and friendly too!

Machacado delicioso

By Claire B |

Fresh fresh fresh! Corn tortillas were home made, exceptional flavors in everything we ordered. Excellent service and owner visited with us about life in San Miguel de Allende.

Been there before and I’ll be back again.

By vlepak |

Excellent food I stopped in there last year when I was in town for business, I’m glad I went back this year and I’ll be back again next year. I had the salad with mango and salmon. I also recommend the Mexican martini. Great staff very friendly excellent service.

cold food, flys and wasp nest, oh my!

By Marti K |

Cold food, flys and wasp nest, oh my! Not a good lunch at all! avoid going and decide elsewhere for Mexican. I was totally disappointed and embarrassed I suggested we have Sunday lunch after reading a write up on the Community Paper for my neighborhood. I seriously thought the restaurants write up would of parted the sea with the food descriptions, not! BTW, their margarita was watery and lacked any type of thirst quenching appeal, just awful.

simple placem excellent food

This is one of my best friend's favourite places, the food is good and the service is excellent. We enjoyed the meal

Traditional Mexican

By bjcTx |

The menu was original and delightful. The dishes were made with very fresh ingredients and were delicious. The place is rather small but well arranged. Wait staff were very attentive. Prices were very reasonable. Definitely would revisit.

Excellent mexican fare, worth being adventurous

By Natandjaan |

We love this place, and it's a regular when we have guests and becoming a regular even when we don't. The friendly staff make up for the low key atmosphere, but we come for the food and service and can live without the white tablecloth and fancy silverware. Be adventurous, forget the regular fajitas and tacos ypu can find anywhere (ok they are good too but try something new). I love the rose petal sauce with the steak, tastes like you're smelling a rose .. at first, and then there is bite from the subtle chilli .. amazing. we also love the variety of pablano pepper dishes and the pork in banana leaf. Shrimps and Calamaris are super tender in a nice sauce ... not the deep fried fare you typically find. Desserts are also fantastic, and worth saving room for. While we are not big drinkers ourselves, they have 80 types of tequila which our friends tell us are worth the trip here alone.

Excellent Mexican Food

By Ann H |

Ate dinner here with the family. Restaurant has nice cozy restaurant and a nice "happy Hour" with half price appetizers. All our appetizers were very good and disappeared fast, including their ceviche. Our meals were also good and some unique (to me) dishes were great. I had no room for dessert. I liked this much better than the bigger chains known in Austin.

Dining that is both traditional and adventurous

By zanzara64 |

We have eaten at Hecho en Mexico twice now and are always impressed by the interesting menu and the reasonable prices. The food is very well-prepared and the service staff offer great suggestions. The menu goes much further than the usual Mexican fare. We will definitely go back for another meal. And another margarita. The atmosphere is adult and calm. The restaurant is inviting and clean.

Only went once - food not good at all

By beckyatx |

Big disappointment. This place was trying to drum up business with a bunch if coupons and I went with a friend. Both of us were super unhappy with our food to the pointer didn't even really eat it - which is rare for us. Skip this place if you're looking for a sure thing. (I'm sorry)

Glad we found it!

By Diane M |

Of course, there's no end to Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants in Austin when you're looking online for a good one. So we're glad that Hecho en Mexico popped up on our radar. We wanted a margarita after our fight in to Austin (house margaritas are only $4 on Monday nights, and they were good). We also had a hankering for ceviche, which wasn't the BEST I'd ever had but was still good. And then our server was great at helping us decide between various options that appealed to us. My friend had the mole blanco with chicken and I experimented with carne pibil — achiote-marinated roast pork baked in banana leaves. A rich, earthy flavor (just as the server had described). Overall, we're really glad we picked this restaurant: not too expensive but just right for lingering and talking. And a great server. You know how some — when you ask, "Which of these do you like better?" — will only simper about how ALL the dishes are great? But this one described the dishes we were curious about and then actually told us why she liked which one better. I love that!

Ok

By ingba |

Really wanted to like food . Wait was 20 minutes more than expected for table. Service was slow and I couldn’t tell if seafood enchiladas had seafood. Child’s plate small and charged $3.00 for a small extra side of rice . Too bad not better Mexican restaurants in Austin.

A great experience

By James C |

I went here with my friend Dave for lunch. Not only was the food great but the owners, brother and sister, we're very gracious. I have eaten a lot of Mexican food around the world but this place is definitely in the top two. I wish I lived in A Ustinov full time because I would come back here often
