Brunch

By BoyMomTex |

We stumbled on this place on a Sunday morning after dropping kids off at SMU. We had the Chicken schnitzel and waffles which comes with an egg and potatoes. It was really great! The chicken pesto sandwich was also a hit. Friendly service and awesome coffee!

DO Not eat here. They ignore you.

By Sweetdeesignz |

My God it was if i was on a reality show. Not only do you have to share long picnic tables with other people giving you the impression your sitting down at a creepy church picnic. but they ignored us and took other peoples orders all around us. I mean they looked me in the eye and kept walking. Horrible

The Restaurant AND Bakery are both worth a visit!

By mahanh2018 |

Superb Bakery and Restaurant. Breakfast was delicious, especially the sausage patties. The Bakery White Coc/Macadamia nut cookies were the best I have had. All at a very reasonable price and prompt service.

I love this place-

By Catherine B |

I think it just allow me to forget that I am in Dallas while I am there. It is a small and quaint place. Full of dutch memories. If you ever been in Germany, or Holland, it has a resemble of that feeling a great sausage with a full glass of beer for breakfast or lunch. Who does not like that? Also you would get some other goodies for the old continent, my favorite Aplefwein, a cider from Frankfort, a bit stronger than Strongbow and not as sweet. You would love it. Anyways, I hope you give it a chance and if you want to go with your family, grandparents included they are going to be welcome, the place always have a couple of seniors enjoying the benefits of their motherland. And they are very accommodating for large families, you would see. And dont forget to pack some cookies for home. the ones that are cover with pulverized sugar are the best one for me. Give it a try, if you like sausage, pork, a good beer and unbeatable prices for them. You should go

Bravo for something original & unique

By Mickey2go |

I had a client take me here recently and found a little bit of European paradise tucked away in Dallas. I would have never found this on my own as it is hidden by a large book store. The chocolate no-bake cookies were the best I have ever had next to my German mom's. I also had an almond type cookie that was dipped in chocolate that was very delicious. The traditional meals are just what a home-sick European (or in my case a European poser) needs. I will go back and get some things to take home as well.

Great atmosphere, average food

By Lenese M |

We’ve been coming here about once every other month or so for the past several years. They have a variety of musicians every Friday and Saturday night. Most of them keep to the theme of German, Czech, Swiss or Austrian mountain music. Restaurant decorated in pub-like European-style restaurant, walls setting the alpine atmosphere, good live music and food is okay for the price. The place has changed some over the years. Food isn’t as good, but still tasty. They now use pork instead of veal for the wiener schnitzel. The potato pancakes are a little oily and watch out for the pepper corns in the sauerkraut. Never heard of putting pepper corns in kraut. Most of the waitresses are good, though our favorite is Hanukkah. She’s really good. She’s alert, keeps a constant eye on all her tables and if you need something, all you need to do is signal to her and she’s right on it. She makes coming to the restaurant worth the trip. I rate the restaurant above average. A 5 star restaurant would be one in which the food was outstanding.

Black Forest Cake - don't buy

By Stingray2009Dallas |

I bought a Black Forest cake for my birthday. So disappointed. I asked if it had cherries between layers and was assured it did. Partially truthful, there were 6 cherry pieces on one layer of the cake, no fooling. So disappointed.

Great spot

By jasag00 |

Not the best German food I've ever had, but very good. Nice polka on Friday night, and big steins of beer.

Good food, Good beer, Good atmosphere.

By JHunterP1990 |

Quality German food for a very reasonable price. Nothing beats brunch with a stein full of beer. My only complaint was that when we visited we were directly underneath an air vent. We had to rearrange ourselves so the people with jackets could block the icy air from the others.

Good German food

By Carl S |

Always enjoy going here. Food is always good and sometimes they have entertainment. Sweets in the bakery are wonderful.

Worth a visit!

By Russ N |

Friendly staff. Good German food. Reasonable prices. The bakery offerings are amazing. We tried the schnitzel, German potato salad, and sauerkraut. The Black Forest cake and the strawberry cream cake are worth a visit by themselves!

A great Bakery with Dining

By Charles L |

Great menu selection, all good. Great Service. But Parking gets tight. Most people get an order from the bakery before they leave.

A nice change from the ordinary

By Ryan |

Great little deli located near Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. We ordered the chicken croquettes for an appetizer, a Reuben and the Hot Amsterdam....delish! The German potato salad is really good too! Fast and friendly staff made us feel at home. Now it's nap time!

Amazing! Local and Community Focused and Loved Restaurant

By Matthew H |

We try and eat local when traveling. It is often hard to find good local places…but we do try. Henk’s was amazing! It was packed on a cold and windy Sunday! Yet we were greeted as friends from the moment we walked in…and that is awesome. We had to wait for a place to eat…packed remember…and toured the bakery and shop area. I gained 10 pounds just looking at the homemade breads, cakes, and other treats. We were seated and embraced by those eating next to us. Great discussion supported by excellent service. So much good food we had to take leftovers! Simply a wonderful restaurant … wonderful staff … hot and delicious food … and awesome quality!

Slice of Holland

By Troy W |

I can't remember how I discovered Henk's many years ago. But it is like a home away from home. It's a small family-run business of 2nd and 3rd generation Dutch. Small, cozy, European atmosphere. The food is what I would call standard German restaurant fare: Schnitzel, Goulash, Rouladen, Sausage Platter, Rot Kohl (Red Cabbage) and hot Potato Salad. The Potato Salad is just about worth the trip. They serve a good variety of beers from Europe as well as domestic brands. There is also a small store attached to the restaurant where you can get all sorts of goodies from Germany and The Netherlands. The Black Forest Bakery is also in the same shop and it's common to watch a non-stop parade of folks carrying out freshly baked cakes and pastries. Superb food and unique atmosphere. On posted nights of the week, there is live music. Whenever the Dutch National team play soccer, the games are broadcast at Henk's. I've seen them rearrange the entire restaurant to accommodate all of the orange clad fans. Whatever you have here, you won't be disappointed. Tot siens!

Hidden Gem

By Brent A |

Our group visited this gem for lunch and everyone's meal was exactly what we hoped. Authentic atmosphere and fantastic service was icing on the cake for the great food.

Great German food

By Kathy M |

My husband loves the sausages and red cabbage and hot potato salad. I tried goulash last time was surprisly delicious. Pork is great. Love everything I have tried. Go there every time in Dallas. Thursday's bread pudding.

EUROPE COMES TO DALLAS!

By deborah o |

All we had were desserts so we can't rate the food yet, but the desserts were AMAZING! We have to go back and try the rest. Fantastic! Looking around, most of the customers were European and it felt like we were in a small, European village. There was even a musician playing the accordion, fully dressed in Dutch clothing. Not sure the dinner menu appeals to us, but we will definitely be back for dessert and may even have to try the snitzel!

Food was ok

By Alex B |

Disappointing visits, every time the food was server nearly cold, very slow service and waitress was not well educated on what she served. I am German and if a "Wiener Schnitzel" is served, i expect Veal not Pork, if it is made from pork, it is simply a "Schnitzel". Overall, the atmosphere is ok, nothing special and if you haven't been there, you haven't missed anything.

Fun, casual experience

By RunningBeer1957 |

It is not fancy - it doesn't try to be. It feels like having dinner with your friend that comes from a German family. Go on a night when they have free music - it is so much fun. There are no heathly options but don't worry, go on your diet's "cheat day" and get the sausage and potato salad. You will leave happy and won't regret having to eat salad for you next meal.

Kasewurst and more

By Darren D |

I had the kasewurst plate, and my friend had the Reuben sandwich. The service was very good, and so was the food. I like all kinds of sausage. The kasewurst was good, but it was nothing special to me. It seemed like something I'd find in a grocery store, but I expected it to be better or more special. I realize that many people like Henk's, but nothing special made me eager to return.

Super Danish

By conguy57 |

Husband enjoyed the biscuits and gravy. I had the waffle breakfast. All good, the waffles are small but still good. The coffee and homemade Danish were fresh.

Great German Food

By Carl S |

Great German Food in a small restaurant setting with an attached bakery with spectacular desserts. Worth a visit.

Probably last good European post in Dallas area

By haidagirl2013 |

We have been living in Dallas area for a very long time but never went to Henk's. Our favorite places were Kuby's and Bavarian Bakery which was sold and is no longer what it used to be. It took us one hours to make 20 miles in a heavy traffic on Saturday. We have ordered a Black Forest cake. The cake was ready and looked very good, three layers, whipped cream and cherries, unfortunately not the sour cherries. However, very moist, light and not too sweet. I bought a tart jelly preserve and served it with the cake - it was fabulous! We bought some cold cuts at the deli counter, unfortunately the lady was not very friendly, her indifferent attitude didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy right before Christmas. At one point she was discussing something more on a personal level with an employee and completely ignored me for a few minutes, till a man came out and asked if I was being helped and she said " I got this" and continued the conversation for another minute before she finished my order. We decided to have a lunch there to try out the food. The waitress ( an older lady ) was very nice, attentive and accommodating. The food arrived quickly and delicious. We will be back again.

German tradition

By quicktraveler91 |

This is an old location that still delivers good German food. They have a nice lunch menu and it takes you back in time. The waitstaff is friendly and very pleasant. The sandwiches are quite good and I enjoy the pretzel basket. Still there and worth a trip.

Sold a moldy cake

By Robert |

Purchased a black forest cherry cake for my mother's birthday on Saturday. On Sunday we cut into it and noticed there were lots of blue areas which turned out to be mold. $32 down the drain and a sour note for the birthday. Unfortunately you can't tell if the cake has gone bad until you cut into it. Used to come here several times over the years but never again.

The Restaurant AND Bakery are both worth a visit!

By mahanh2018 |

Superb Bakery and Restaurant. Breakfast was delicious, especially the sausage patties. The Bakery White Choc/Macadamia nut cookies were the best I have had. All at a very reasonable price and prompt service. The Bacon served with the breakfast plate was done just right, tremedous flavor.

Solid German Food with Great Little Bakery

By Tom D |

Consistent hot lunch or dinner platters featuring different sausages with a good sauerkraut and German potato salad. There are other dishes and sandwiches and for the ones I have had I was never disappointed. Great breakfast option too if you get there before 11am. Also a great selection of light and dark beers on tap. You will see a lot of regulars if you go more than once and I think its because its a friendly place that will give you a consistent experience with well made and good tasting food. Once you finish your meal head back to the bakery and select a few goodies to go. My wife loves the Tiramisu parfait and fruit cake but everything I had tried I have enjoyed.

I tell everyone about Henk’s and find it the more authentic of the German establishments in Dallas. It’s small inside, but very good!

Best Pastrami Sandwich

By Myopin |

This place has been around a long time. Quaint, family owned treasure. The pastrami sandwich was one of the best I have ever had. The flavor was amazing. And the red cabbage side can't be beat. Would go there often. Atmosphere is charming. The service was quick and attentive. And they have a store with European foods and pastries. Highly recommended.

So, so, so good!!!

By Rick W |

Wonderful German restaurant, bakery and deli that has been around for about 60 years. Dinner and live music Friday and Saturday only, breakfast and lunch every day. Great draft beer selection and about 40 premium bottled beer. Every single menu item is delicious, then you end the meal with warm apple strudel. Some of the nicest wait staff ever. A new top 5 for us.

Dingy

By G Y |

We read the great reviews and came and had breakfast. The food was OK, the service at the table was very good. The brochen they had was not up to par. The place needs a makeover and a clean up.

Good People, good food, lots of fun!

By James W |

Henk's has become my go to place for my monthly Bavarian Fix. Me and a group of friends have been going there at least once a month for over 10 years. Henk's is a family owned Dallas landmark. The simple menu reflects the simplicity of the restaurant. Service has always been exceptional. Family style seating where everyone is your friend. The Bakery items are really good. The signature Black Forest Cake is one of my favorites. The restaurant is open for lunch every day and open for dinner for sure on Friday and Saturdays. Wednesdays lunch special is typically meatloaf just like my mother used to make.

Good food

By scottishbum |

Food was good, but service was the stand out. Our waitress was attentive and prompt. Good place for German gifts too.

Been driving by Henk's for more years than I will admit to

By tomthbomb |

When working in Dallas I stay close to North Park mall. The choice of restaurants in the vicinity is ok but not great. After work on my way to the hotel I was checking out a brew pub for a place to have supper. I was not that impressed but my short cut to the hotel took me by Henk's. I decided to check it out. I have been driving by Henk's for many years, too many to admit to. I have even eaten at the Tex-Mex restaurant in the same parking lot. Inside the place shows some age. Well, it's been here for at least 40 years so, ok. I walked in at 5:30 p.m. They close at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday so my time was short. I visited with a waitress and had Spaten Octoberfest. She was friendly and the bier was great. Henk's does stay open later on the weekend but then there are so many more choices.

A must for German food lovers

By pstee0072 |

This out of the way, charming, "very European" eatery is well worth the time and energy for some good eating. My wife and I both had the rouladen, spaetzle, and potato soup. I also had the fried potatoes, while she had the german potato salad. All were excellent. I honestly can't enough good things about this small and quaint eatery. The prices per portion size and flavor were fantastic. The patrons and the staff were all very friendly, quick with a hello and maybe even personal memory.

Located behind Half Price Books Flagship...

By 401mirandab |

Food was average, atmosphere was ok... I had the Wiener Schnitzel ($10.50) - Their menu is available online for checking out before hand... There was not a kids menu, but they made my 5 y/o a grilled cheese sandwich... The accordian music was not too loud, but the room was quite crowded (small area).. *** There was nothing wrong with this restaurant, but I prefer Kubby's in University Park...

Artistry in your mouth

Henk's European Deli on Blackwell in Dallas has cornered the market in cakes and pastries. This bakery has been my personal favorite for twenty years. Every item is handmade and is made with the freshest ingredients. There is no scrimping on perfection when it comes to taste. The prices are commensurate with the product you receive. Their competition does not come close. Do not go home empty handed. The mocha buttercream not pictured is a must have. Rueben With a Smile

By peteroo820 |

Henk's has been around a long time. Off Greenville Ave, it's a place you should get to know. An Authentic German deli that has outstanding sandwiches and plate lunches, plus a delightful assortment of pastries, cakes and European chocolates. The service is warm and friendly. My Rueben was primo and came with a pickle spear and chips. My friends had Pastrami on rye. Best lunch in a while! I looked at the cakes and pastries - so many choices- lots of choices of European chocolates and candies.

My favorite German Restaurant in Dallas

We loved this place every time we visit dallas we go to Henk's. Several friends do the same. I was born in Germany and I was very impressed with Henk's. Joe

Wonderful German food with good and pleasant service. Excellent Reuben snadwich and great desserts. Bakery is full of tasty treats.

German food, beer and polka music!

By Chuck F |

Friday nights are standing room inly. Mostly neighbor folks who have made this local bakery and deli a must see!.... First timers should try the sausage sampler and walk out with a pastry for later... Reminds me of my German heritage.

Little place, big taste

By Diedra H |

I was a little leery about eating in a restaurant that's basically inside a grocery store, but once I got my food, it was all good. The food was awesome! The atmosphere was casual, and our waitress was as nice as could be.

Easy going , very good German food; cakes : best in town

By Tote1940 |

So far have not found French pastries in Dallas (La Madelaine does not count!) here are not only good German and Dutch food but best cakes in Dalals and good European groceries

Great place for a sandwich

By russkwtx |

This place serves German food and I recommend any of the sausages that they make in-house. I also really enjoy the Rueben. It is not very big but it is very tasty and the quality of the meat is high. The place gets busy and is not very large so there may be a wait. The ambience is cozy and European. You may share a table with strangers, no big deal. We were there before New Years and the line for their cakes was at least 50 deep, so they must be doing something right.

Old World delight deep in the New World!

By PMS |

Henk's ED&BFB is one of my favorites restaurants in Texas. Dutch-German foods, great (and cheap) cold draught beer, excellent Goulash (Eastern European Chili), fine sausages (from Tulsa Oklahoma, of all places), and a fun deli. It's a truly international experience. You can eat German food prepared by Dutch immigrants, while being serenaded by a Jewish-Russian accordionist! You can shop for food items from the Rhine watershed, while Ethiopians and Guatemalans line up for specialty baked goods. I never go to Dallas without stopping at Henk's (it's my only source of Scho-Ka-Kola high-energy chocolate).

Pancakes and a Polish breakfast for 15$... Get outta here!

By Randini101a |

Hadn't been to the BF Cafe for breakfast in forever, but some things are timeless, and this place is one! Had the pancakes and a Polish breakfast... The food was outstanding! The waitress was funny and friendly ( we got there at 10:58 am - two minutes before breakfast ended, but she handled up on the kitchen for us). The place has been around for over 50 yrs (2nd set of owners have had it for over 25), and it's still great! It's back in the breakfast rotation definitely!

Jewel tucked in by half-price books

By Lynda M |

Behind Half-Price books on Northwest HWY. Very reasonable price. Homemade biscuits and omelets, Awesome pastries on the weekend. Specialty cakes that would be great for a dinner party. Not fancy but a great place for weekend brunch. Fresh food, excellent quality, old-school diner.

Great Food, Excellent Bakery and Incredible Owners

By Don T |

Having been a long time customer of Henk's I'd always held them in high esteem until recently when I had a bad experience with one of their staff members that left me less than enthusiastic about ever returning. To my pleasant and most appreciative surprise the owners contacted me regarding my expereince and assured me they didn't approve nor would they ever tolerate such behavior. I must say the conversation I had with both of the owners was heart felt and sincere and completely took any issue I had with their company away. It's owners like this that make great companies. This long time establishment in the Dallas community is in good hands. I HIGHLY recommend HENK's and hope that everyone will give them a try.

Authentic German restaurant extraordinaire

By Judy H |

Our son and his family took us to Henk's for an early Grandparents Day dinner. The place was packed and noisy with lively chatter and German music played on the accordion, very upbeat atmosphere. We were absolutely astounded by the number of German patrons, who are obviously regulars--and for good reason. The food choices are authentically German in addition to other European entrees. I had their outstanding wienerschnitzel, red cabbage, and speatzle. My husband had the equally delicious sauerbraten with the same sides. And although we were stuffed, we had to try their black forest cake and apple strudel--both yummy. The website of Henk's shows many of the delicious dishes and huge variety of baked goods in the deli. Despite the crowdedness of the restaurant, we were waited on and served quickly. We will definitely go again.

Nice, fun place; food only OK

By deansmith75126 |

Four of us visited Henks for lunch recently. No wait in the restaurant, place was busy. Three of us got the weiner schnitzel w/ german potatoe salad and cole slaw. It was very average. Schnitzel was good - potatoe salad OK - cole slaw didn't have much flavor at all. Another got the chicken schnitzel sandwich, she said it was good but nothing special. Being as busy as they were service was good. Doubtful I'd go back if it was my choice.

A (little) piece of Holland in Dallas

By dirk4sf |

Good, simple food with a Euro-twist at reasonable prices. Service is efficient and beer selection is good. Also a select variety of European grocery/packaged goods that cannot be found anywhere else in Dallas. Oh...don't forget the deli counter and cake & pastry department. The only thing they don't sell: tulips. Good choice if you're not looking to go fancy.

Very good food for lunch but don't bother with the bakery.

By Cruising2by2 |

We stopped here for lunch while visiting family in Dallas and had a great lunch. The grilled Bratwurst and red cabbage was the best of all that we sampled (also had the potato pancakes, hungarian chicken, red cabbage, german potato salad, sauerkraut, Hot Amsterdam). Potato pancakes are extremely small dice potato that does not lend itself to the crisp outside you would normally have if the potato was shredded. Nicely flavored with pepper. Hungarian chicken was excellently seasoned with paprika, a nice touch, but the chicken was over cooked. That could be because of the cooking technique as thickness will dictate toughness if not watched carefully. Brats as I said were excellent, nicely spiced and I would come back for them. The most dissappointing things were from the bakery. The line to the bakery was 10-15 deep and people were purchasing whole cakes and walking out the door. We sampled black forest, german chocolate, apple strudel and chocolate mousse cake. Unfortunately all were lacking. Cake was the same for all 3, with no real flavor, a very light cake. We struggle to understand why the fuss for the cakes but alas for all the years we've come to visit Dallas there really are no good bakeries in this town. Service was excellent, fast and friendly. Even though this review might sound very critical, the certain foods are very good and very well priced. I would come back when again visiting family.

Where the Locals Eat!!

By redbirdfever |

This was a lucky find on our part as we were looking for a place for breakfast near our hotel in Dallas. We stayed at the Double Tree in the Campbell Center and took a wrong turn trying to find the IHOP that we had seen as we were driving to the hotel the day before. This is a real treasure!! Great homey atmosphere and wonderful food. German to the core and very friendly staff. The bakery goods were to die for!! We were here the Saturday before Easter and they were super busy with people picking up cakes and other baked goods. We had an almond type cookie half covered in chocolate that was outstanding. I bought a little slice of Black Forest cake and my wife had German chocolate which were both so tasty. They had many different kinds of draft beer on tap and so many beer steins and mugs on shelves. I only wish we lived close by so I could be one of the locals that comes back again and again!!

Fun experience!

By Charlotius |

Great German food and fun little european shop and pastry and chocolatier. Hot german style potatoe salad and the sauerkraut with the sausages is yummy and a nice change from american fare!

Trip to Europe without leaving Texas

By WandWoman |

The small restaurant and store offer European foods that provide a feeling of having traveled overseas. The atmosphere reminds me of Germany or Austria with beer steins and murals. The family-run place shares a love of German cooking with its patrons. The traditional favorites of sauerbraten, rolladen. sausage, bratwurst, Schnitzel, and sauerkraut are on the menu. The sausages are made by an Austrian man in Tulsa and driven to Dallas. The connected store is like visiting a neighborhood shop in Europe. There are so many great treats! In addition, the Black Forest Bakery has a marvelous collection of cakes. One time we visited on Mother's Day and we couldn't believe the huge crowd taking the beautiful delicacies home. Authentic fare in a cozy atmosphere makes Henk's a wonderful place to visit.

My Birthday weekend in Dallas

By NYDEB55 |

My daughter took me here to eat and purchase cake. I thought it was a good place. I say mostly Dutch cookies but the store inside also had some German seasonings and wine. I purchased the Strawberry cream cake. It was a little old but good. I also had a slice of the dark homemade bread. This was excellent. I had a cup of tea. Nothing special about the tea.

Quaint and cool

By jasag00 |

A hidden gem. Food and beer were both excellent. The polka band was outstanding. There is also a little market.

Wonderful Cakes and Cookies

By Holly |

The Swiss Madrisa cake is my absolute favorite cake and it is as good now as when I was a kid in the 70’s. It is light, airy, fruity and perfect for any summer occasion. Their cookies are also tasty. The Black Forest Cake is equally delicious using their original recipe. It’s not open for many hours every day, but it’s worth planning your day to visit the bakery.

Wonderful!

By Metoody |

I stopped by at lunch time to pick up a sandwich and some specialty foods for an upcoming dinner. The Rueben sandwich was AMAZING! I thought it was just because I was really hungry. It was so big I only ate half and had the other half the next day and it was just as good!

A Bit of Old Europe Here in Dallas

By MFin2011 |

Server was Hanneke - she was both prompt & attentive. Food was GREAT! Had the beef Rouladen - nicely spiced braised beef (with onion & bacon & seasonings inside) - only $10.95 comes w/2 sides (I chose the German potato salad and tasty green beans). It came with a deli-style pickle spear. Draft Beer prices are VERY reasonable - imports such as Spaten Lager= $4.25 for large (22 oz) size! Try to save room for desert(s) - Henks owns the attached Black Forest Backery - featuring dozens of delicious temptations - tasty truffles to tarts to cakes such as Schwartzwalderkirschetorte (original German Chocolate cake)! Came on a Saturday night. They have LIVE music every Friday & Saturday night playing Oktoberfest-style and Austrian/German music - included with no cover charge. Am looking forward to my next visit :) Prosit!

Get your Licorice fix here!

By gibbswp |

This is both a restaurant serving German and Dutch food, and a small European supermarket. The Dutch love their licorice and you can buy not one, but dozens of kinds of licorice here, from mild to super strong. They also have fantastic breads and pastries. One of my favorite places to eat in all of Dalls.

Bakery visit

By mtran_12 |

Their bakery is great! My husband LOVES their chocolate chip cookies and sugar cookies! Large and soft! Their European grocery selection is great too! We've eaten at the restaurant and the food is ALWAYS great!

Don't expect traditional German food

By bcl208 |

Four of us (two slowly aging grandparents and two rapidly aging granddaughters) stopped in for lunch on Sunday, June 11. The little place was packed for their Sunday brunch. It obviously is a popular spot. I, particularly, was looking forward to some good Wiener Schnitzel. Instead, the food reminded us of what happens when a German cousin who can't cook invites you for a delicious German meal. We didn't get what we expected. Good Wiener Schnitzel should be light and airy, with a delicate breading. The two cutlets we received were tough and gristly. The German potato salad didn't resemble anything we've ever had in the past. We expected red potatoes, bacon, onion, and fresh parsley with a light vinegary flavor. We couldn't identify what we received. The potatoes were heavy in some sort of unfortunate tangy orange-colored sauce. In fairness, the potato pancakes were spot on. Everyone agreed they were delicious. The very light rye bread that started our meal also was quite good. At this moment in time, we can't comment on the cheese blintzes because they came home with us and remain uneaten in our refrigerator. The apple sauce was unsweetened, which appealed to one of us. Our delightful server was friendly and accommodating. Pancakes were not on the menu, but when she heard our three-year-old express a desire for one, she said the kitchen staff could manage that, and the result did look light and fluffy. Our food arrived promptly, and the service was attentive enough, considering the harried atmosphere of a packed little restaurant. Overall, we can't recommend the German fare, but we couldn't help but notice the huge, delicious-looking omelettes that other patrons were enjoying. If we ever return for Sunday brunch, we'll order something else. Perhaps that is the key to Henk's apparent popularity.
