Quirky for Thai.....

By Tman312 |

Don't think this place is Thai typical, it isn't. It's a prix fixe menu of 3 or 5 courses. I would bet the mushroom soup is a staple (average at best). The chef (or owner) came out to explain the menu and was welcoming, if only the timing and the service of the meal was as good. Don't try to tweak the menu or it will really delay the meal. The price and quality of the food was OK but not worthy of a return.

Best Thai Food Outside of Bangkok

By STEVEFROMCHICAGO-82 |

This is by far the best Thai food in Chicago let alone the United States. Patty is an unbelievable chief who you will see on TV many times in the future, she's already been on twice and won both times. She has a set menu, either 3 or 5 courses, that changes with the seasons but everything is always fresh, organic, and taste fantastic. We have brought many people to Herb from out of town and most go back again before going home! If the restaurant was in Lincoln Park or the Gold Coast you would have to wait 6 months before getting in but because it's in Edgewater you can usually get a reservation a week in advance. This is one of the best restaurants in all of Chicago and reminds my wife and I of the best Thai food restaurants in Bangkok.

The best Thai place in Chicago

Amazing food, always something new on the menu. Very kind Chef Thai always comes and says hello. Must try... Every weekend

Excellent from start to finish!

By Joanna P. |

Highly enjoyable and memorable dining experience from start to finish. I wish that I lived in Chicago to return often! My daughter selected Herb for her birthday dinner. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and seated promptly. Patty, the chef, cheerfly explained the menu. Each unique dish that was presented was not only lovely to look at but also absolutely delicious. I ate many flavors and dishes that I would typically not order. Patty made my daughter feel so special on her birthday celebration! I felt grateful for how Patty filled our stomachs, senses, and hearts. We loved every minute in the beautiful space.

Herb Restaurant

By 197marian |

If you are interested in upscale, modern Thai food, go here & you will be pleasantly pleased. It's a BYOB restaurant,, the drinks offered are interesting- I had a lemongrass/ginger iced drink. My husband had a lychee iced drink. There were so many lychees, I thought it was his dessert. We were going to order a starter of betel mixed with coconut & other things, but were told that came anyway, so had to choose something else. For 3 courses at $35. or 5 at $55.this place is a bargain. If they were downtown Chicago, this would cost 3x more. The service was greatThey are open Thurs,Fri, Sat,Sun. They have won Zagat awardsUnderstand why.

Get the tasting menu

By Christine H |

We each ordered the three course tasting menu which was plenty of food. We each ordered different things for each of the courses and were able to try six different dishes. The snapper is worth the up-charge, and both soups were fabulous but filling. Next time I go, I may skip the soup so that I have room to finish all of the snapper.

Among the best Thai food I have ever had.

By Jvinikour |

I went to Herb’s a few days ago with a large group who reserved the entire restaurant for the evening. Every last detail was wonderful. The cheerful staff seemed able, first of all, to handle a huge group as if they do this sort of thing every day. But... the food.... Exquisite. Beginning with a little betel leaf, with a delectable little mound of herbs, followed by an ambrosial mushroom soup, with thinly sliced roots, to an otherworldly shrimp served in ribbons of tempura, and finally a delicate but delicious tofu stew, I felt that this was one of the most satisfying and memorable dinners I have had in Chicago. I can’t wait to return!!!

Fine dining Thai at a whole new level

This restaurant is open Thursday thru Sunday dinner only. Great cuisine to the elegance of the Thai culture. Fresh local menu always changing. BYBO.

Great Thai food in Chicago

By SRe411 |

Wonderfully prepared Thai food in the Chicago. Great care with ingredients and presentation and a delicious balance of flavors and textures. Our favorite dish is the Fried Frizzy Prawn. Friendly, impeccable service.

Works of art that taste as good as they look!

By iTraveltheworld195 |

Amazing food! Upscale, innovative Thai cuisine. Our cousin had raved about this place at least a few times to us. Recently he finally got to share it with us. It is just as wonderful as he claimed it to be. Truly a gem. People should be talking about this place. Every course was exquisite. Everyone at our table ordered the three course tasting menu. We each chose one appetizer, one soup and one entree. The chef/owner sent out a complimentary starter. It was betel leaves with roasted coconut flakes, diced ginger, shallot, peanut, bird’s eye chili, lime, sweet palm sugar sauce. You wrap it all up in the leaf and pop it in your mouth. It's a lovely sweet palate cleanser to start you on your culinary journey. For my appetizer, I had the frizzy prawn. It was outstanding! Hubby had the grill beef appetizer. It was good as well but I would go with the shrimp all day, every day. For my soup I had the tumeric trio mushroom soup and hubby the hot and sour fish soup. Again I like mine better. A bit spicy but not overly so. Wish there had been just a touch more of the broth. For my entree I had the salmon with curry. It was so good, wouldn't even share a bite with hubby. The heat index on the salmon is a bit higher than some of the others but perfect for me! To end the meal each of the couples ordered one of the chef's whim dessert. It was a collection of tastings. They were so good. My favorite was the mango one. Cuz was right to rave about this place! (FYI we had no problems with service and Patty, chef/owner stopped by the table to check on us a number of times,)

A mixed experience with a family party: great food and eager but imperfect service

By Julia E |

We came to Herb for the first time to celebrate a birthday with a family group of 13+infant. The owner/chef designed a family-style menu for us so we'd get a chance to sample as many of her wonderful creations as possible. She was very accommodating of our request for a semi-private space as well as some dietary concerns. Overall it was a wonderful dinner and a pleasantly memorable experience. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and masterfully executed. The service, was a mixed bag: on one hand they went out of their way to accommodate our very challenging group and were incredibly courteous and attentive, on the other hand they seemed as though they were not used to dealing with this type of service and there was some confusion, a lot of waiting for food to arrive (even though the menu was pre-arranged) and explanations of what was served (which were very helpful and appreciated) were lacking. Based on the less-than-polished table service I would actually give a lower rating, but the chef/owner is so charming, eager to help, a wonderful, creative chef and a very hard working business owner, that I just couldn't do that to her. We plan to come back (just 2 or 4 adults next time) for a quiet dinner to savor her delectable creations through the seasons.

Boujee Thai

By WhatBucketList |

A very unassuming location. Not much around the area and you wouldn’t expect this sort of business in this location. Food - 4 Fancy Thai food that is priced healthy. Over priced, no. The spices and flavoring are done exquisitely with finesse. Authentic Thai food with class. Would have to say a little Americanized. Service - 3 Very sufficient but scattered. There didn’t seem to be much cohesiveness with the team. Atmosphere - 3 A nice dark and trendy interior but it may be done a on the cheap. If you closely look it seems as though furniture was purchased from ikea. Will return if I have a craving for the crispy shrimp but other than that I may have them lower on the totem pole

Amazing

By John T |

Amazing. The service is amazing. The food is amazing. The owner/chef is amazing and super friendly. She treated us like we were very important guests in her home. Given the high quality of the food, the cost is a value. I wish we lived closer, we'd be there every week.

Refined and creative Thai

By Skidad_11 |

Lovely space & atmosphere, the food is sublime - indeed the first course that was served was orgasmic! One of m favorite restaurants!

This place is a MUST TRY

By SarvinH |

What an amazing time we had! We tried almost everything on the menu and I have to say every single dish that came out was just out of this world in terms of presentation, taste and authenticity...it's also BYOB which makes it a perfect night out for you and friends to enjoy. Chef and owner Patty is super helpful and friendly. The service is impeccable. We had an amazing time in this intimate and friendly spot with the most delicious Thai food I've tried in Chicago. We will be back for sure!

One of the best, if not the best, Chicago restaurants!

By DC-Foodee |

I echo many of the over-the-top reviews here. This restaurant, Herb, is truly something special. A small menu, but every ingredient in every dish is part of an artistic performance that engages most of your senses. We had a memorable evening, and can't wait to return.

Fine Thai dining

By broadway2009 |

Herb is a fine modern restaurant with a compact menu. Nevertheless, vegans and meat-eaters will all be able to find something good to eat. The flavors are highly developed and the presentation was excellent. The chef/owner was very much in evidence and provided a warm welcome. Currently, it is BYOB; and parking is abundant. Overall: highly recommended

Valentine's Day treat

By Crystal L |

I am usually not a fan of thai food. But every thing from the presentation to the taste of the food was excellent. There was a fixed menu for the day but each course was beautifully plated and the rich ,favorable food was excellent. This is a byob restaurant with a minor 6.00 corkage fee, it was well worth the drive.

Amazing food, warm people

By Nishsgokarn |

Have been to this place a couple of times during my visit to Chicago and would go there on every visit to the city. The owner and Chef Patty is so full of energy and sweet that it all trickles down to the entire staff. Food is impeccable and authentic. Loved every piece served from the 5 course meal. A must visit when in Chicago!!

Herb

By jhomich |

Best Thai ever! The spices were varied and delicious. It is a bring your own wine place but that give you the chance to bring your favorites

Lovely place, lovely chef/owner, not a great value

By Steve R |

We had dinner at Herb after seeing a review on Check Please in February. Judging by the reviews posted since the airing of the program, the restaurant had some problems with handling the increase in customers, but I am happy to report that our servers were for the most part excellent. There was a serving gaff in that the amuse bouche that was promised was not delivered until we mentioned its absence several times. The owner/chef Patty Neumson came to our table to welcome us after we sat down, and explained the dishes (and the freshness of the ingredients) in a most delightful way. One has the choice of a 3 or 5 course prix fixe menu for $38 or $58. The 3 course can be 1 starter, 1 soup and an entree, with $10.00 surcharge if duck or chilean sea bass entrees are chosen. Starters run $10 to $12, soups $10, and entrees are $20 or more ($32 for the duck, $34 for the sea bass). It makes sense to do the 3 course dinner, but the portions are small. The crispy prawn starter was the best! Two large prawns wrapped in rice noodle strips and fried with a sweet chili mango sauce. I would not order the betel leaf starter because we got that as our amuse bouche, and even though I enjoyed it, I would pick one of the other starters to avoid the duplication. L*** had the seared salmon starter, which I found to be less than anticipated in terms of flavor. 3 of us had soup course, and this caused an interesting but not surprising revelation. The a la carte portion was slightly bigger than the prix fixe portion. I had the spicy fish soup, with two different kinds of mushrooms in a lemongrass herb broth. R** and J** had the 3 mushroom soup, in a coconut milk based broth reminiscent of Tom Kha Gai (but without the chicken). Both soups were good, but not stellar. For entrees the spouses had the Chilean sea bass, and R** and I had the duck. I liked the duck, served in a lychee pineapple sweet chili garlic sauce, but I would have liked a bigger portion for the price, a lot more garlic and chili, and I definitely would have preferred the duck breast portions medium rare instead of medium well. The portion size for the sea bass was probably a bare 4 ounces, and the fish did not have a lot of flavor infused from the sauce, which tasted similar to the mushroom soup broth. Be aware that the restaurant does charge a corkage fee, even though it is a byob establishment. I did a little research, and for years the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection had been enforcing a rule against BYOBs charging corkage fees without a liquor license — only to recently discover there was no such city ordinance. Since 2016, the city has not interferred with BYOB restaurants charging customers a corkage for drinking their own wine and beer, but most BYOB restaurants are not charging a fee. $3.00 a person is kind of ridiculous since the servers do not pour any wine or beer for the customers. Patty--you have a wonderful establishment and you are very competent. The presentations of the dishes are beautiful, but the value isn't there. We all left the restaurant hungry. For over $100 per couple, that's a bit much. I liked some things very much, but was underwhelmed by the entrees and their portions and prices.

Excellent food, service can be a bit choatic

By goodgenes5 |

The food in this modern Thai restaurant range from excellent to outstanding, with refined Thai taste in dishes that are artfully presented. I really like the food in this restaurant, which is distinguished among the many Thai restaurants in Chicago. The restaurant is also tastefully decorated. The owner Patty tries very hard to put together an excellent dining experience, and the chef is very accomplished. The service, however, can be improved. Some of the orders are misplaced or missing. A tasting menu includes five appetizers on the menu, but only four are delivered. Water is not refilled until after the meal is finished and the check presented. The staff cannot be found except when serving the food. I think the service staff is well meaning but can be better trained. Overall it was a good experience and I would return.

Fresh and delicious Thai food

By Tiffany C |

Delicious Thai food that isn't the typical fare. No pad thai here. Very fresh ingredients and our friends who have been to Thailand even commented how amazing the food is and how authentic. Been to Herb several times to try different dishes - all are yummy. Menu changes seasonally. If you love mango sticky rice for dessert, order it and you won't be disappointed. The owner is very warm and friendly.

Great Upscale Thai and BYOB

By jessieryder76 |

We love every visit to Herb. Chef Patty makes some truly inspired cuisine with excellent presentation. Excellent for couples and groups.

gastro experience on a new level

By dennis n |

This Thai joint is anything but average. When I walked in a little early for our table the waiter suggested I go to Jewel 1 block south and get a couple bottles of wine to go with dinner. I did and brought them back _no bottle charge- started the meal (prix fixe) with a free appetizer of betel leaf covered in peanuts and ginger with secret ingredients that all worked well together as a palate awakener. for 4 of us it was about 80 bucks each which was fair considering the amount of food and the attention to freshness and detail/presentation. It is family run and friendly and accommodating to every level of spice and request.Bring an appetite and high expectations and you will not be disappointed.

Can’t love this place enough!

By Kerry M |

Honestly, this is in my top 5 dinners of all time!! The flavors are amazing and the spice level is perfect. Just go! It was so worth the ride there. ❤️❤️❤️ Bring your own wine!!

Gourmet Thai cuisine in the neighborhood

By Chisoxdoc |

Herb is one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago. Patty, owner and chef, has innovative Thai cuisine with a menu that changes with each season. There is always a vegetarian selection as well as fish. Unique flavors and presentation that is beautiful to look at as well to eat.

Herb Heaven

By D2514ROcrystalc |

We arrived just at dinner opening and were seated in a serene muted dining area that had soothing classical music. Our first of what turned into 5 courses was served (Usually 3 course Prixe Fix). Also it's BYOB, so I'd suggest a light red or white to start. The Betel leaf was filled with toasted coconut, ginger, Bird's eye chili (pepper) only whetted my appetite for what was coming. Next was the Fried Frizzy Shrimp. The Shrimp was perfectly cooked and was a virtual feast in the mouth. The wait staff was constantly vigilant and responsive. The soup was Tumeric Tofu Mushroom and the broth was poured on at the table, making all of the ingredients maintain their texture and individual flavors. My entree of Salmon was delicious tender and flaky. I couldn't believe how perfectly seasoned and cooked each dish was presented The portion sizes were perfect, but with each course you wished you had just one more bite of perfection. The food was well presented with edible flowers decorating the plate, The decision to have dessert was tough, as I was already stuffed, but it was well worth it to have a small tasting of 4 different desserts with the Chef's Whim. Patty, the Chef and owner came to each table and talked about her culinary vision and made it an even more pleasant experience. Come hungry and leave healed, wishing you can come back tomorrow. Her menu is seasonal and changes with the seasons. I love Thai food, and have eaten it around the world, and I can safely state that this is in the top 2 of BEST THAI FOOD EVER.

Boutique Thai

By Ronald J B |

An elegant setting in a middle class neighborhood sets the tone for this "double" storefront on Broadway. Executive Chef Patti uses all fresh, locally grown (where possible) and healthful ingredients. We chose the Prix Fixe 4- course appetizer/soup/entree/dessert option. Appetizers are inventive, pleasing to the eye, and delightful on the tongue. Two soups offered present mushrooms, veggies and seafood in a mild or spicy broth. Entrees are creative and filling. And it is a BYOB! [Ice bucket, corkscrew and glasses provided with a $2 corkage] A delightful setting and food experience, with a dedicated Chef. Good value, as well. Easy street parking (but be sure you obtain a paid receipt from the City kiosk at about a $2 per hour fee).

Michelin recommended but should be Michellin star

By RajeevNagpal |

This small elegant clean and modern restaurant in north side of Chicago is a true gem worth going again and again. This is one Thai restaurant that provides you with great ambience , excellent excellent food and a unsurpassed service. We drove an hour to reach this restaurant and were sceptical as most Thai restaurants are small and do not have a great decor and usually provide similar food. But Not this one . As you enter u can see the simple and modern decor. The owner and the chef greet you and take you to the table. She then explained the menu and choices From Beatle leaf and shrimp appetizers to the dessert course, each dish was just amazing. She also made vegetarian entress as some of us were strict veggies. Salmon in the main course was out of this world. I highly recommend that. Desserts were great and healthy. Two more important points. There food is fresh and very healthy. Most importantly with such a exquisite dinner price is low. Also it is a BYOB so you don't spend much. This restaurant is a must visit and should get a Michellin Star

An excellent place, one of my favorites in Chicago

By Vincent F |

Our second visit to Herb was as delightful as the first one. The food is great with very subtle flavours and beautiful dishes. The service is excellent. The price is very reasonable and they also offer set-price 3 or 6-course options. You may bring your own wine.

Elevated Thai food. Not to be missed!

By Robin R |

Our party of 4 ate here on Aug 16. Everything we ordered was fantastic! It is a very elevated take on Thai food. Each dish was beautifully plated and presented. The menu changes seasonally. Some of our favorites were the chicken curry dish and the duck. Chef Patty stopped by our table and it was a wonderful evening overall.

Grace quality food at Lettuce prices

By Rick J |

Rarely do you find a cook/owner with such a passion for food in a small out of the way place. But Peggy does amazing things, and has an uncanny ability to combine exotic flavors. Her passion for fresh ingredients, creativity and artistic presentation is superb. The mushroom soup was incredible, as was the massaman lamb. BYOB makes the experience even more affordable and interesting. Just be advised this is a small place with a limited staff (Peggy's daughter does alot of the work), so if it is crowded enjoy your wine for a while. But your patience will be rewarded.

Best Restaurant Meal of Our Lives

By nancy h |

I really do not know where to begin but, for starters, everything was perfect. The food is truly amazing and I have been to Thailand so I know a bit about the food. Herb does a spectacular twist on traditional dishes and employs creative and unexpected combinations (lotus root in mushroom soup, for example) to provide wonderful and tasty food. Service was terrific, Patty, the owner and chef who is from Thailand talks to all the diners and has a real passion which shows up in the glorious meal. Portions are generous and although we had the four course tasting menu we had enough take-away for lunch the following day. We are looking forward to many more meals at this spectacular restaurant and it's ByoB so don't be put off by the menu prices and, as I said, the portions are generous.

Authentic Thai Food in Chicago

By S T |

All I can say is I was so very impressed! Every dish from the starters to the soup, entree and then dessert were amazing. Each dish burst with flavors. I had the 3 course dinner with the shrimp and squid starter. My guest had the beef. Excellent! Each dish was presented beautifully with edible flowers and had a unique and extraordinary flavor. It was like being back in SE Asia again. Patty the chef and owner was so very nice and gracious and especially talented. The wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant is decorated simply and tastefully. BYOB and casual dress is great. For the quality of the food it's like a hidden gem on the north side of Chicago. I am sure it will be found very soon by many and the little neighborhood location will be booming! Ample metered street parking. I ordered the Chilean Bass entree, it was fabulous. Beef starter was delish. Pork Congee, wonderful. Dessert was heavenly. I highly recommend dining at Herb.

Outstanding food. Painfully slow

By Michael O |

Some of the best Thai food in North America, no really. But the service is so slow it makes you worried and hungry. Can I recommend this place yes but bring your own wine and extra patience.

Overpriced and mediocre

By Noelle B |

The menu was extremely limited and expensive. They only offer a 3-course or 5-course prix fixe menu. My husband and I each had a 3-course prix fixe menu for $38 each. Although the presentation was nice, the food was no better than my local Thai restaurant that charges $9 for their Coconut Curry Chicken. The pork belly entree was really fatty and uninteresting. Just tasted like a bland, fatty stew. Our server was pleasant, but terribly slow. Our meal took more than 2 hours. Their Frizzy Shrimp was delicious. I was looking forward to this meal, but was really disappointed!! I will not be returning.

Best Thai food I have ever had

By Scott M |

We came here for dinner on a Friday night. We had the 3 course tasting menu which was fantastic. One appetizer was a betal leaf-wrapped collection of toasted coconut, Birdseye pepper and more that was an unexpected treat. Very light but totally delicious. Soup was a buttery curry with unusual vegetables that was memorable and the main I had was a pork and vegetables dish that was very good. I have never been to Thailand but this is the best and most interesting Thai food I have had the US. Not cheap but the quality shows in the flavors.

The Food Was Amazing

By JFB4409 |

We made reservation as many of the reviews suggested. However, when we showed up on a Thursday night (7:30pm) there wasn't much of a wait. The food was amazing and very fresh. We had the chefs tasting menu, 6 courses for $55 so not unreasonable for Prix Fixe in Chicago. They have certainly taken the reviews to heart as we did not wait very long between courses. But the chef does come out to the table a couple of times through the meal and explains some of the dishes. I thought it was a nice touch and was appreciated by both my wife and myself. The food is amazing and certainly worth the trip. They were up for a Michelin star and I can see why. The first plate we were served was a leaf with some different things on it. I have been all over the world and I have never had ANYTHING like this!! The Flavors just explode in your mouth as you chew. The soups were rich and delicious. We both had the curried beef, which was spicy but a spice that built on as you went. All together I will go back, probably often as my wife loves Thai food. I brought a bottle of Chardonnay (BYOB), but felt it was a little rich for the meal. Next time I think I'll try a dry Sauvignon Blac.

The Best Thai that we've found in Chicago

By divenuts |

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Herb this weekend. Friendly service, socially distanced tables and wonderful food. The a la carte menu is very small but we chose the 5 course prix fixe and it was delightful. It's BYO and with such value priced food, this was not only an extremely enjoyable evening it was also very inexpensive in comparison to other Chicago restaurants of this quality. Highly recommended !!

Disappointed

By Nikow69 |

I was so Impatient to go there to try their food as the only time I went there was for the event plate your dreams. Welcoming was really cold comparé to the first time. The chef who welcome everybody spend all her time to speak to only one table. Food was good but it doesn't deserve the price. Service was really not professional for a gastronomic restaurant

So flavorful!

By E H |

Everything we had was fantastic! You could really taste the different & unique flavors in each dish. Great options for vegetarians & omnivores. BYOB. Great service. The only complaint is that it was VERY NOISY which does detract from the overall experience. It would be good to install some sound suppression.

Best soup ever. The rest also awesome. Food is a work of art

By John C |

A charming BYOB in Edgewater that has a small but powerful Thai menu. They encourage the prix fixe menu which is a great tasting of all aspects of the menu. They have a 3 and a 5. The two of us split a 3 and a 5 to make a 4. The appetizers were great. We had the frizzy prawn, the pomelo salad which was a wonderful fresh fruit salad with a light spicy dressing, and the tapioca chicken dumplings. All awesome. We also each got a complementary betel leaf appetizer that was great. The next course, the soups, were the star of the show. I can't decide if I liked the turmeric mushroom or the spicy shrimp better, but they both had incredible flavors. All the dishes were works of art much like at the much more expensive Arun's restaurant. I would say the quality of the food and artfulness of the dishes was on par or even better than Arun's. We each had a main course of shrimp curry and a garlic pork dish. Beautiful and tasty. I'm not a big fan of Thai desserts generally, but the Mango sticky rice was great. What are you waiting for? Go! High end Thai for 1/3 the price of Arun's.

More vegetables please...

By Mary Ann L |

This is a lovely spot, with friendly attentive service and an innovative and enjoyable prix fixe menu (Note that it is BYOB....). Our 2 suggestions - we associate Thai food with wonderful use of vegetables, and Herb does that well, but it would be great to have a bit more on the plate...; also, we hope they could find a way to cut down the noise level somewhat - our Saturday night 7 PM dinner was memorably noisy...

Thai Reimagined

By pinksparkles32 |

What a lovely meal! We’re in town for a couples trip and wanted to find good Thai food. Herb did not disappoint! The entire staff, from the chef to the young lady who refilled our glasses, was friendly and gracious. The food was divine! We each ordered the three course option and shared with each other so we got to taste six different items from the menu - each was better than the next. Just as an FYI, it’s a bring your own bottle of wine. We didn’t realize that (and since we are from out of town, we couldn’t just grab a bottle from home), but the meal was not lacking without wine - it truly stood alone.

This is a Gem

By Peter K |

Throw away all your ideas about what Thai food is supposed to be and race to Herb. The menu changes with the seasons and every meal I have eaten there has been fantastic. To be honest the service can be spotty, but it is more than made up for by the creative, fresh and delicious meal. The chef will come out to greet everyone at some point and she is the sweetest woman who instantly you can tell has put serious love into every dish. This place can be romantic or a great place to meet people. I challenge you to find a higher quality meal at this price anywhere. It is a tad more expensive than your neighborhood Thai place with lots of noodles, but so worth every penny. Also, the menu, which appears limited, has something for everyone, meat, fish, and great vegetarian options.

Fine Thai food

By Mumtazhusain |

We went with my husband's office people and had a great time. Loved the ambiance of the place. Food was delicious, the presentation was amazing and even better in taste. I had the lamb and it was tender, great flavor and no smell; this coming from a person who never eats lamb. Right from the appetizers to the dessert, everything was great. Service was excellent and we were also personally attended to by the owner/ chef Patty. Will definitely go back again.

Elegant Thai

By NBCTeacher |

A friend and I visited for the first time with a Groupon. We got two apps, two soups, two entrees, and two desserts for $76. We received a delicious free appetizer of betel leaves with coconut, ginger, peanut and a sweet sauce. The service was welcoming and the server was attentive but not over-bearing. We ordered eight different dishes so we could share: grilled beef and frizzy prawn appetizers, hot and sour fish and numeric mushroom soups, and short ribs with baby eggplant and shrimp with asparagus entrees. The desert, Chef's Whim, was three asian spoons for each of us filled with various treats. Everything was stunningly delicious and beautifully presented. Flower petals often adorned our dishes. The decor is understated elegance. Street parking is abundant.

Excellent Thai restaurant, a very good experience.

By Vincent F |

The food was excellent, with lots of flavor and a beautiful presentation of the dishes. The service was very friendly. We took the $35 three-course menu, which was a good value for such quality cuisine. We could bring our own bottle, which is another plus. I recommend this restaurant.

Refined Thai

By jim590 |

Highly refined Thai food in Edgewater. Not your run of the mill pad Thai spot. Super fresh ingredients with wonderfully creative dishes. The owner chef is super friendly and stopped by our table. It's BYOB, so plan accordingly.

Wonderful experience

By Raksha M |

We went to Herb last week. we went with a couple of friends that frequent this place. Patty, owner/chef personally took care of every detail. Four of us out of the group of six were vegetarian and Patty made sure we had really good quality food... wonderful experience...

Gourmet Thai neighborhood restaurant

By MRO |

We keep returning to Herb because the flavors are unique and the food is always spot on. There are always vegetarian choices and Patty will accommodate your tastes if you prefer less spicy foods. The menu changes with each season so the only disappointment is that the last thing you liked may not be on the menu when you return. BYOB.

A genuine find

By Virginia G |

This small restaurant delivers amazing flavors at fabulous prices. Our meal cost $99 for two, and this quality, presentation and atmosphere are hard to match at that price. We loved the pork spring rolls, the spicy chicken soup, the trio mushroom soup, and both the red snapper and tofu curry. All ingredients were very fresh and all dishes looked picture perfect. There is a $3 corkage charge, but I can't imagine how this restaurant survives without the normal wine markup, so I had no problem paying. Can't wait to go back.

Absolutely Fantastic

By KentM959 |

From the moment we were greeted at the door through dessert, this was one of our best dining experiences of 2018. The waiters explained each dish from the three categories for our 5-course (3 is an option) prix fixe meal. It was hard to choose but don’t worry, it’s all amazing. The Frizzy Prawns and spicy scallops were amazing, as appetizers, and the turmeric trio soup was heavenly. The salmon, beef, and pork entree’s were delicious. Dessert was the Chef’s Whim - a delicious selection of four sweet spoonfuls - a perfect finish. This restaurant is a “don’t miss”.

Sublime Thai feast

LOVE every dish, beautifully presented, kind and attentive service, truly a fantastic restaurant. I always look forward to a special and absolutely delicious meal here.

Simply delicious upscale Thai/BYOB in Edgewater

So different from the typical Thai joint. Minimalist modern decor. Excellent 4, 5 or 6 course prix fix menu, that is reasonably priced. I think you can order off the menu too. Everything was beautifully presented and so tasty. Even though upscale, the atmosphere was not at all stuffy or pretentious. Now for the main thing , the food - we had the 6 course - 3 appetizers - a crispy shrimp dish, dumplings, a spicy sweet fruit salad, followed by a soup course - a spicy shrimp soup or a mushroom soup and the main course - my husband had the pork and I had the lamb curry. So so delicious that we could even hear the oohs and aahs from other tables (I'm not suggesting it's loud though) You could tell they use the finest quality ingredients and take such pride in their food. The owner stopped by a few times to see how we were doing. Menu changes 4 times a year. Please try it. Remember to bring your bottle of wine.

Excellent food/friendly but SLOW service!

Let me start by saying that the food at Herb is excellent, except for the dessert very blah; the decor beautiful and the staff very friendly. We had made a reservation but none was found when we arrived. As our friends hadn't arrived yet a 20 minute wait was OK. It turned out that was the shortest wait of the evening! We eventually got a table at about 8:00 P.M. (reservation was for 7:15 P.M. as they couldn't do 7:00 P.M.). We ordered 2 three-course set menus and 2 five-course set menus. At 8:00 P.M. on Saturday they were out of bettle (spelling?) leaves for one of the first courses and also out of spicey sausage for another first course. The wait between courses was unacceptable, we had to ask every time and eventually went to the kitchen to find out what was going on; we even had to ask for water refills (just as well we brought 4 bottles of wine!). We got a lot of friendly apologies and eventually finished our meal at 11:30 P.M. needless to say everyone was long gone by then as kitchen closes at 10:00 P.M. More apologies followed with a bill that did not charge us corkage ($3/bottle). We cannot fault the waitstaff but really the kitchen needs to sort out this problem and until then we will not be back or recommend this restaurant.

Not your typical pad thai

a wonderful seasonal menu with interesting and creative combinations of spice and flavor. Several of the dishes (betele leaf amuse; red snapper soup) exploded in your mouth with unusual flavor and spice. Really, really enjoyed it. It's fairly small and decorated tastefully. Service was outstanding (thank you, Jason) and the chef owner came out to greet us. This is not your typical Thai restaurant so you won't find things like basil chicken or pad Thai; this is upscale. You can order off the menu or select 3 or 6 items for a prix-fixe menu. We changed it up and tried their salmon and lamb dishes--both excellently prepared and flavorful. They take reservations and it's BYOB!

Thai like you have never had it

This is a quaint northside Chicago restaurant in a block that is in change. Street parking is easy and the restaurant is very welcoming. The food. presentation and tastes were unlike any Thai dishes that I have ever eaten. This is not a kung pao, chicken satay, orange chicken Thai restuarant, It is a culinary treat both to the eye in presentation and an explosion of tastes. We ordered the chefs fixed price menu and all 5 courses were outstanding! This is a great restaurant to not only enjoy food, but to also enjoy good conversation. The service creates the mood for relaxation and plenty of time between courses. Plan for a night of a dining experience. Please note, it is a BYOB. We brought a few bottles of a dry riesling which was a perfect match to the spices and tastes. I think a crisp, lager beer would also work well.

A Truly Redefined Meal

Looking for a dining experience? Herb is definitely a restaurant worth visiting. Try the 3 or 6 course meal that will enlightened your taste of Thai food. The 6 course meal may sound like a lot, but each dish is delicately prepared to satisfy your taste without being too filling. My favorite was the initial dish of Bitter Leaf (just the name), with coconut, peanut, spice and a very flavorful topping. There was plenty of room left for the Pork Belly that just melts in your mouth. The 4 desserts are mouth watering authentic, homemade delicacies that is seldom found in any Thai Restaurants. You can bring your own favorite wine to compliment your meal, which is unusual for any restaurant. The location has easy parking. Call and book first because they are only open for Dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. So expect the unexpected.

Incredible food; horrible SLOW kitchen pace

By roger c |

OK, this is probably the most difficult review I have ever had to write. The quality of the food was truly superb -- unique, refreshing, interesting, complex flavors (i.e., the use of "herbs" is very appropriate). However the pace of the food delivery was horrid. First of all, their menu consists of either a 3 course or a 5 course pre fixe menu. The first are basically choice of spring roll type items, followed next by choice of two soups. Again, the flavors were great, BUT it took nearly an hour and half for these first to courses to get to our table. Overall, we were at the restaurant for just shy of three hours for a pre fixe 3 course meal. It made no sense at all. Granted, the wait staff did keep stopping by the table to check in with us and to keep promising that food was on its way to us. But there is someone horribly wrong in the kitchen. Maybe it was someone calling in sick, I don't know. Just giving you a warning.

Probably the best and most unique meal in Chicago

By LS M |

Probably the best and most unique meal I have ever had in Chicago. Incredible flavors, very unique. I have never tried Thai food this different neither in the US nor in Thailand. The pork belly fantastic, the beef curry and the mushroom soup exquisite, but my favorite flavor was an edible leaf with coconut crumbs that was offered before the appetizers. The chef and the staff extremely nice. Highly recommended.
