Nice meal(s)

By Edwelsh |

After missing our flight, we spent a day at the Renaissance and ate at Hickory and Hazel twice. We had a late dinner consisting of Pimento Cheese dip app, Sweet Heat Wings and Key Lime Pie. Prices were reasonable, $37 for all that. Quantity was plenty as it was enough food for the two of us. Quality was good, everything was quite tasty. We were able to sleep in and enjoyed a late breakfast. I had the H&H Breakfast with 2 eggs cooked to perfection, bacon cooked crispy and toast. My wife had a delicious bagel and side of bacon. With her coffee and my orange juice, our bill came to $35. The seating area was comfortable and service was very good, both times.

Lost their edge

By Bill N |

Service = not good Food = good after long wait Service not good on slow night, drinks slow to come out, clueless on order of who was seated first. Last visit was sooooo good, this one not so good. Great location for someone to put in really good restaurant and serve the gateway Marriott and Reneissance. The Marriott chain lost the edge.

Didn't live up to the hype

Went in with party of 9, reservation was handled well and the server was excellent. Had heard and read great things about it, but found food to be average to mediocre overall.

Very good!

By BrendaKH |

We were in town for a convention and stayed at the Renaissance Gateway, where the Hickory and Hazel restaurant/bar is. We had the hush puppies and each got a burger and fries. It was all very good! The food cost was quite reasonable. The service was fast and the staff was very attentive. The drinks were pricy but very good. $16 for a dirty martini and $14 for a chocolate espresso martini. A glass of wine was $10, so that wasn't too bad. The bar area is very cute with plenty of chairs and multiple tv's to watch. I would highly recommend this place!

Good Meal in a Good Hotel

By lwwisdom |

I sat at the bar and was waited on by Nathan. The service and drinks were very good. When I come again I will order my NY strip steak medium rare. The taste was good but medium was a little over cooked. Otherwise the rest of the meal was very good.

Amazing food

Hidden gem by the airport

By Bill N |

Not your average hotel restaurant. Friendly team from greeting to wait staff. They had live music in the lobby, nice touch. Great wine by the glass selection. Ariel made recommendation of the BBQ brisket sandwich, outstanding.

Nice place to chill... Eat and drink

Great hotel so-so reztaurant

By rdb613 |

Stayed at the Renaissance hotel the night before our cruise flight. We ate at the hickory and hazel. Service was great and atmosphere good. Food was ok but seemed it was delivered by a caterer rather than. Cooked on site. Pork loin and baked chicken were on the dry side. Bone in ribeye and waffle and chicken were fine. $17 for a glass of house wine was too expensive. But it was very convenient!

Fab airport-adjacent Southern restaurant

By pillowsofwanderlust |

I stayed at the Atlanta Airport Marriott GATEWAY my last night in town. Hickory and Hazel is the Southern restaurant located in the newish (opened May 2017) Renaissance Atlanta Airport GATEWAY across the street. These GATEWAY hotels are connected to the airport via the quick, easy and free SkyTrain. There is a third Marriott-branded hotel here also--Springhill Suites Atlanta Airport GATEWAY. The Marriott has its own restaurant, called Champions that looked nice with a decent menu, but the Southern menu of Hickory and Hazel lured me there. Springhill Suites has no restaurant. Although surely most restaurant guests are also hotel guests, Hickory and Hazel is worth a visit even if not staying here. The bright and airy space is in the corner of the similarly bright, airy and contemporary hotel lobby with a beautiful abstract world map painted on one wall. The restaurant has an attractive bar area, several TV's and floor to ceiling windows. It's open all day. The smallish-sized menu features many Southern classics. My go-to choices are always fried green tomatoes as a starter and shrimp and grits as a main. The night before, I had both of these dishes at the touristy Pittypat's Porch downtown. Hickory's dishes were both superior, and the shrimp and grits were less expensive ($14 vs. $27 at Pittypat's, although Pittypat's includes breads and the salad bar). The tomatoes were served with a lovely fresh corn relish and roasted garlic aioli. The shrimp and grits included 4 shrimp (vs. 7 salty ones at Pittypat's) plus andouille sausage and bacon. Delish. I got a side of sweet and spicy peach coleslaw; I didn't tasty any peach flavor but it was good and chunky. The peach iced tea was quite peachy. I didn't order dessert, although they had some enticing choices, but I did order a griddled pimento cheese sandwich to go. It came with fries and was a good large "snack" later at the hotel, even at room temperature. Service was quite attentive, especially since there was only one other table at 4 pm. A fantastic choice if staying nearby or have a long layover. I would consider arriving at the airport early to dine here before checking in, or upon arrival before going into town.

Disappointing New Gateway Restaurant

By rockys_friend |

Despite other reviews, the restaurant, Hickory and Hazel, at the new Gateway Renaissance Hotel is not very good but it is expensive. It is advertised as a stylish restaurant featuring Southern cuisine. Hickory and Hazel doesn’t measure up. I’ve had better Southern cooking in small cafes and buffets all across Georgia and at much lower prices. Maybe in the South, restaurants don’t serve bread and butter—this one didn’t, but it seems parsimonious for a classy restaurant. We ordered a bottle of chardonnay wine from Snoqualmie Winery for $42. When it arrived, the label said that it was from the year 2012. White wine is generally meant to be drunk within a year of bottling. Our bottle of 2012 chardonnay was not improved by being six years old—we were surprised that the restaurant served it. I ordered “Prestige Farm Chicken” that was supposed to have been brined and served with parsnips and fennel. There was no fennel on the plate, the parsnips did not taste fresh, and the chicken was dry and stringy. Although my entrée was disappointing, my husband ordered the day’s special of grilled trout wrapped in bacon. He said it was delicious. The wait staff was very helpful, especially a server named Skyler. She was terrific—helpful without being intrusive, friendly and professional. Although there were disappointments with the wine and the entrees, Hickory and Hazel is much more pleasant and relaxing than the noisy Champions Restaurant in the Marriott hotel.

Good food - great service

By kwagmeister |

My husband and I wanted a light dinner and glass of wine and since we arrived after hors d’oeuvres were done in the concierge club, decided to try this restaurant. It was a good choice. He began with the ahi tuna, which was beautifully presented but to him just OK. I started with the special soup of the day which was excellent. Beef and potato - but not too heavy. I also had the potstickers which I enjoyed very much, while he had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich which he thought was great. A waiter noticed us joking over my wanting some of my husband’s French fries and brought out a hot basket of them just for me — nice! Service was excellent - friendly and efficient. Travelers for an overnight aren’t likely to stray far without a car, but still, this restaurant is good enough to want to stay on site for dining.

Delicious food

Had some amazing shrimp and grits here, and it was a huge portion size! Service was friendly, and I would totally go again!

Moderate take on southern food

By SDRBN |

Had dinner here during a meeting at the hotel. Enjoyed the deviled eggs appetizer and the side of mac and cheese, also had the pork chop - which wasn't great. The pork chop was fairly overcooked and the greens on the side weren't good at all. Wine/drinks were very expensive. It is a decent onsite restaurant and it's nice to have options at the hotel.

Really Good Option when Staying near Airport

By Traveler1959-123 |

This restaurant is easily accessible on the Sky Train between the airport and rental car center. It has really good menu options for any taste, great staff, an upscale feel, and reasonable prices. I had the porkchop and side salad, and it was all really good. Definitely will be back next time I overnight at ATL.

terrific restaurant

By bostonbased |

I had a fun "grown up" grilled cheese sandwich that I would return to the airport just to have again! friendly server and nice atmosphere.

Nice hotel resturant!

By Charles1019 |

This restaurant is located in the lobby of the Renaissance Atlanta Gateway which is at the Atlanta International Airport. the service was very good and the for as well. I had the H & H salad which was excellent and for my main course I had the Seared Scallops with Cauliflower Mash . Nice meal after a long day of flying due to severe weather cancelling and delaying flights. Next stay at this hotel will mean a meal here!

ok

Good food, interesting design. Cold, bring your jacket or keep drinking. Service really slow. Make sure you have enough time.

Best hotel food in a long time

By ThomasEMM |

Hickory & Hazel is the restaurant that is part of the Renaissance Gateway Atlanta Airport hotel. I can only say that having dined here 2 nights in a row this restaurant qualifies to me as the best hotel food/restaurant I have had/been to in a long time. First night had a blackened chicken sandwich with string fries, absolutely amazing. Second night had the quinoa salad with grilled salmon added to it, also amazing. Really, great kitchen, great service, great food in also a great airport hotel!

Awful isn't quite accurate enough to describe this experience

By The Pidge |

Since the lounge for Bonvoy elites at the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway (where we were staying) is closed on weekends, we were given vouchers to use here for complementary breakfasts. It was one of the only times we ever walked out of a restaurant without both having eaten our meals. After not being greeted by our server for ten minutes, the hostess asked one of the waitresses if she had taken care of us- she lied and said she did, and when the hostess saw we didn't even have glasses of water, called her on her lie. She came back over, took our order, and disappeared for a half hour. When she returned with our food, my wife informed her the bacon in her omelet looked like ham and without even looking to validate what my wife told her, confirmed it was indeed the bacon that she ordered. But it wasn't. When my wife finally flagged her down (another ten minutes), she apologized and said she'd have the kitchen make it again, then disappeared for another half hour. I ended up leaving my voucher for the free meals and we subsequently walked out- my wife not having eaten despite more than an hour spent on what should be the quickest meal of the day. The experience was bad enough, but the perpetually-lying waitress made it even worse.

Wow, The Option by ATL and GICC

By Mark C |

Based on other reviews crossed the street for dinner. Solid all around. Beats the heck out of mediocre bar food. Hotel is located in lobby of Renaissance Hotel. Had the Charred Romaine Salad (a few too many croutons) followed by Scallops. The Scallops, only 4, knew that going in were juicy, tender and very well seasoned. Okay wine list by the glass. Enrique provided good service. Would return.

Great place to eat

By Glend |

We had two breakfasts and a dinner here great service, points below; Good points great fast Breakfast friendly service clean Good location Negative Night time choice could be bigger Breakfast extra's, on both breakfasts they forgot an extra, bacon first visit and sausages second, still consistent!

Need a great meal at Atlanta airport

By Mark C |

Just enjoyed a well prepared salmon with great side of snow peas/onion combo. I wanted light foods and the seasons were great and food hot. Service was excellent

Nice and Close

By ChaseyK |

We recently stayed at the Gateway Marriott across the street and wanting to dine out, we ventured across the street. The restaurant/bar is located just off the lobby, but far enough to not have noise or any distractions will dining. The menu is small, but versatile and quite nice. The wait staff were pleasant and attentive.

Pleasantly Surprised

By Jim R |

I rarely eat where I stay except for breakfast. This restaurant is located in the RenaissanceHotel. I only had time for a quick lunch and this was my closest choice. Quick service and good food!

Average food, decent service.

By LouisvilleWildcatfan |

I was taken aback because the host did not wear a mask at all. The servers did. Food was ok (pizza was the best of everything we got, trout and collards were a little too salty). Servers were hustling (it was busy)

Great place for a late airport meal

Perfect late night food for overnight ATL layover Our server, Enrique, could not have been better Had great pizza, big salad and fabbo soup

Nice Restaurant - excellent variety of Food!!

By Gudrun R |

We enjoyed several meals - excellent quality - nice presentation and great ambience. Servers very friendly - even the chef came and personally brought the meals out - can't wait to be back !! A really nice restaurant!! We were there for Lunch and Dinner - at the end of February - and mid March !!

Unexpected delight!

By Pineapples-a-Plenty |

We had an early flight, and overnighted at the airport. The desk agent suggested Hickory and Hazel. Two thumbs up! This is a southern style spot, with a terrific menu. Shrimp & grits. Cornbread. Cauliflower. All superb! They have a locally brewed IPA, and it was outstanding! The service was good, not great. All this said, we will be back!

Fast, friendly service. Delicious food.

By MOchick |

Had a fabulous Old Fashioned paired with a creamy, smoky bowl of shrimp and grits. Divine. Service was fast and friendly. Loved it. Would definitely visit again.

Very enjoyable light evening meal!!

By Gudrun R |

This is the friendliest airport restaurant - the manageress and her team ensure that you are well served - by a very professional and cheerful team - the food is of outstanding quality - just a pleasure to have a meal there - be it breakfast or the evening - always great!!

Good food, good deal, for a hotel restaurant

By vichy |

Had both breakfast and dinner from Hickory and Hazel - there are very limited restaurant options in the area due to the isolation of the convention center and attached hotels from the rest of Atlanta, so they have a bit of a captive audience for those that are staying here. That said, both meals I had were great - not mind-blowing, but definitely good food and very very reasonably priced compared to what I usually see at other hotels. Fast and friendly service, too, which I appreciated. I would definitely recommend, no questions asked.

Don't ask for a recommendation

By Michael T |

Walked over from the Springhill to have lunch as I could not check in due to "computer problems". Asked the server for her recommendation on an item and got, "I don't know, I have never had it". Come on, you work here, you must know about the food you serve. Poor training. Finally ordered something, just OK.

best oatmeal!

By d v |

I am not a big breakfast eater so I only had the oatmeal. But it was the best I ever had! It was perfectly done, came with pecans (of course!) and brown sugar on the side. Also, they had the best coffee ever ( sorry, no Starbucks here - but better!)

Broad menu, slow service

By Eric B |

The menu offers a wide variety of unique options, and the food was good, but the service was VERY slow. Even refills on water were in short supply. However, there are not many other options in the area.

accommodating to my vegan requests

By WendyNewHaven |

Had two breakfasts and two dinners here during our stay. Very friendly wait staff. Easy to veganize a few items on menu. Tasty and reasonably priced.

Excellent

Great food and service. Warm atmosphere in a modern hotel. Try the buttermilk half chicken - it was excellent. Will definitely return

Fried chicken

By plonky74 |

Stayed at the Renaissance and ate dinner for my overnight stay. Fried chicken was good but the wings were better and the peach cobler. Good food for a good price and in the hotel. Good service also.

Food was different, but good.

By Geocon04 |

I wound up here because I wanted to eat something different. I spent a lot of time at the airport nearby during my stay at the Renaissance, and it was getting late. The bartender was helpful and friendly. She answered all my questions, and let me know the meatloaf is not a conventional meatloaf. The presentation was nice, but the meatloaf was a little costly...typical airport hotel prices. The taste was alright, and I did like the use of greens in the presentation of it. It was a creative dish. It's a great place for drinks, and great conversation with friends/co-workers. The staff was great, and the service was pretty quick!!

Great place to nest!

By Cocktails_at_Seven |

Since I live within ten minutes of this place I couldn’t wait to try it out!! Loved it!! Great bar area restaurant had interesting food choices. Service was spot on. I had scallops and my friend had shrimp and grits. I say go!!

Lobster fettuccine & Quincia

By siffirg |

The highlight of this meal was Quincia, my server. Very pleasant and sort of playfully tough. Did her job perfectly. I was greeted very quickly, even though it was crowded and she was the only server I saw. I was in the mood for lobster fettuccine, maybe because it was cold outside. It’s something I almost never order, so I honestly don’t have a good judgment on this dish. But I have had lobster in Maine, and, as I expected, it was not up to Maine standards, but it was good and the fettuccine was done right. It was light, which I didn’t expect. I’m glad I ordered it, but it didn’t “wow” me. The meal could have used bread. Another positive was that it was decently priced.
