We ate our first Philly Steak at High Street on Market in the Reading Terminal Market. The place is an oasis in this crowded market. Good service, good food and an interesting Kraft Beer Menu. The best place there.

The place is small and has a very friendly and good feeling. The menu is small and most descriptions sounded a bit contrived. I had the turkey/balogna, feta cheese, chickpea, egg, lettuce salad....without the bologna or the feta. The salad was small and expensive. The turkey was chopped in teeny tiny pieces far smaller than the chickpeas. The Green Goddess dressing consisted of a ultra thin smear on the inside of the upper edge of the salad bowl. I did ask for more dressing and was presented with an extra tablespoon of dressing for my bland salad. Iced tea was good.

A rustic bakery and breakfast place by day, and a thoughtful restaurant at night - both excellent food and menus. A warm, dark interior, that’s quite cozy at night with a good small wine list and artisanal drinks. We lived and shared the pastas and vegetable appetizers. The breads were delicious. The desserts were yummy and we were offered homemade ginger/molasses (?) cookies as we exited. A short walk from Independence Mall/ Hall and worth the little walk. I made a reservation on Open Table.

I highly recommend High Street on Market after our group of 6 dined there. Their menu is simple and among our group we ordered most of their menu items. Every food item was delicious.

Stopped in for breakfast. Not too busy on a Monday morning 8:30. Had great coffee and Italian Market Platter. And a Bread plate. All was wonderful. Price is a bit high for breakfast but we had to try it.

The place is great - open kitchen concept - fresh ingredients. I got the pastrami hash sandwich. I'm a hash man - I'll eat it any way I can get it. At High Street on Market they fry squares of potato and oinion, then top it with a fresh egg and pastami - it is decadent and worth every calorie. I also got an apple cider fritter - which I could have eaten 10 of - they are limited so get there early. Lastly, I got a spiced hot cider that was out of this world - it was foamy and creamy - amazing.

I'm just going to come right out and say (or rather, 'type') it: the Beet Cured Salmon Pretzel Roll needs to win a gosh-darn award. the flavor of the fish with the horseradish cream cheese creates a gustatory romance that Shakespeare could not rival with words. It's over too soon, though, simply because it's a small sandwich. If you're tired of eating the same old same-old, High Street on Market provides a great escape from the mundane. Peek at the menu and then tell me that you don't have to use your imagination to form a picture of what they promise to serve. A diner at another table ordered what I think was the Roasted Turkey Sandwich--and it was enormous. And while he had to box his (presumably because the sandwich is made to be eaten by a small tribe), I envied him none for the size of his meal. Mine was delightful. I followed it up with the Chocolate Chess Pie. No regrets, there! It served to brand High Street on Market as one of the reasons I can't get Philly off the brain. Service is pleasant and pretty quick. Enjoy!

Went there for a business lunch. Very good service. Menu rather extensive. Some descriptions could have been a bit more descriptive but the food was good. I'd return when I'm in the neighborhood again.

We had good food- I loved the mushroom ravioli and the pasta dishes were all good. t The wine list , both by the glass and bottle, was disappointingly truncated. We were at a high table near the kitchen and it wasn't very comfortable. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful . We liked the restaurant but did not fall in love as we have with its sister restaurant, Fork.

This is a very nice place. You guys have the best food I could imagine. Without you I could not survive. Thank you for saving my life I don't know what I could do without you I would like to know more about your cafe'

We were seated promptly when we arrived about 1 p.m. walking in light rain from the liberty bell. Bloody Mary was small and overdone with celery seed and a horseradish type flavor. Prefer traditional season to this mix. The eggs were wonderful, the Old Bays fried potatoes were chunks, not fries and are delicious! The pastrami sandwich was also very good. Not New York deli size, but enough to satisfy. Worth the walk. And Betsy Ross house was just a few minutes away.

Six friends from different USA cities converged in Philadelphia and on the recommendation of a cookbook editor friend made a reservation for dinner at High Street. We each raved about the food and service experience which we each said was memorable. We chose the $45.00 per person sharing menu which we thought was a terrific price for the quality, originality and thoughtfulness applied to the creation of the many dishes we enjoyed. The service was impeccable thanks to Jake who led the service oriented and well informed team who serviced us throughout our four course plus meal. Sitting very close to an open kitchen we also were impressed with the professional culinary team. Everyone of them, dressed in their immaculate whites, their food preparation efforts were so well coordinated, noise from the open kitchen was virtually nonexistent. We never had to yell above the kitchen noise which is so common in many open kitchen restaurants. The orderliness, cleanliness and professionalism of the culinary team was unique in this age of open kitchens which are frequently, noisy, chaotic, and seem to be a step above fast food. Highly recommend High Street -fantastic food, excellent service, fun energetic ambience makes this restaurant a stand out.

This was not our first meal at HIGH STREET. But it was very good, as before. The bread is excellent, excellent, excellent. There were four of us and we shared 6 dishes, although the waitperson said we would need 8. Six were enough for us, but we are all over 60. Younger couples might want more. I thought the half chicken was delicious, if not just a bit salty. I look forward to going again.

Friendly greeting, and delicious food. Bit expensive but worth it. Really stand-out creativity. Good coffee and nice bread!

Cute place - would give 3.5 stars. All of the sandwiches looked good but opted for the roast pork. As is often the case with broccoli rabe, it can be bitter, and unfortunately with the provolone it overpowered. I was expecting kimche on the sandwich but the rabe must be marinated in kimche juice. Pork and bread was good. Good COVID precautions. Only a few small tables outside and no indoor seating. No bathroom, FYI.

Had a very nice breakfast about a year ago. So, in town and decided to try dinner. Had a couple of spreads and a couple of plates. They were OK, but not great for the price. Possibly the smallest $13 wine poor we've ever seen. The service was fine. Worst thing we were seated next to a table with young couples withe two babies. Kept invading our space. Behind us another baby. Not the restaurants fault, but annoying nonetheless!! All in all not a good experience. Never again in the evening!

We stopped by for breakfast and liked it so much we came back the next day. Good coffee, amazing bakery, and really good breakfast foods. Service is friendly and prompt. They also serve lunch and dinner. Next time we are in Philly we will visit this place again and maybe try them for dinner. Try this place I know you'll like it.

Great place for either an informal business meeting or a date night whenyou want to show how eclectic you are to your sig other. The food provides great flavors from farm fresh foods and whether carnivore or vegetarian you can find excelelnt choicesa that will have you wondering "why did I never put those two flavors together before". Since most of us are trying to decrease the heavy fats and carbs you need food that is interesting and flavorful and High Street delivers. Its also located in a good part of town for heading to other date night activities.

The roast pork sandwich was excellent. I like that it was literally bursting with filling, and the bread that wrapped around it was thin. The flavours of pork, rabe and provolone went very well together. I was also impressed that the wine list featured an excellent option which was available by the glass: the Avivo Sangiovese.

Dined with friends and we really enjoyed our meal! Ambiance is solid - most importantly for us, we could carry on a conversation over the buzz in the room. Drinks were very good, and the menu had something for everyone. Gnocchi was particularly lovely. Portions are slightly on the small side, but everything was prepared with great care and flavor. Definitely recommend. I feel the need to return for breakfast or lunch and enjoy some of the famous bread!

I dropped in for dinner last night and had the Pickled Carrots app, Smoked Mackerel Platter, and a Sausage Plate, the last arriving courtesy of the house (!) All delicious, the mackerel plate was heaping, while the pickeled carrots came in a tangy yogurt dipping sauce that was unlike anything I've had before. (My only niggling complaint was that I could have used a few more carrots). I was in and out in like 25 minutes and waiting for me at the door on my way out was my server, holding a tray of fresh baked cookies. It will be a long time before this restaurant experience is topped. Thanks, High Street.

Strolling by, without reservation, I had a very nice brunch with one of the breakfast sandwiches, the pastrami one, though I did not expect a bun but rather bread slices, the egg was perfectly cooked!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I had the sourdough waffle which was perfectly crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. My wife said the eggs were among the best she has had at a restaurant. Our friends enjoyed their meals as well!

Had a delicious lunch here. Great service. Sandwiches were generous in size and delicious. Salad was fresh and filling.

Since retiring from to Philadelphia from Brooklyn NY, I am always on the lookout for good eats. I am a good home cook. So I had some Brooklyn visitors up for the weekend and they wanted to treat us for dinner. We live in Old City and decided to go local. I decided to try High Street on Market during Restaurant Week. The food and beverages were at a high level. I ordered a Bread Service which was was delicious! I had a very well conceived burrata and tomato layered on Gazpacho soup which was superb! I also ordered a deconstructed smoked bluefish tarte tatin that was favorful. The entree was was a cleanly panko fried pork cutlet. The really interesting taste addition was the side salad consisting of the arugula and a horse radish sauce. This combination extended a decent pork cutlet into a very good unami flavored meat/veggie combo. Major League.

We went for breakfast but we're too late. Decided to do lunch and were not disappointed. Excellent grill cheese and a bean soup. Friend had turkey with a very flavorful vinaigrette, other had salad which was good too. Place was packed which is a good sign. Tight place and noisy. Would love to return for breakfast some day.

We were staying at the Wyndham (very close proximity) and stumbled upon this restaurant when looking for a restaurant for dinner. Wow, what a find! Excellent cuisine, phenomenal service, great place for a meal!

Stylish, informal, surprising , unique spin on food combinations , intriguing cocktails - truly wonderful experience. Come to the UK please!

I love this tiny unique cafe. Whenever visiting old city I like to stop in here for a quick bite to eat. I have tried their roast pork sandwich which is a nice spin on all the other similar pork sandwiches that you can get in the city. I have also had their beet cured salmon on a bagel which is sooooooo good. As for pastries - they have a small selection during the week, but the better selection in my opinion is available on the weekends. I had the red eye danish which is a savory pastry with gravy in the middle of the flaky crust topped with thick ham and shredded cheese. This is probably my favorite savory danish! The pastries sell out really fast during the weekend, but if you call in advance they will set some aside for you. I called, and it was a good thing because the two danishes I had them set aside were the last, and I called at 11am!

We had been touring the Old City area when we decided to have a late lunch. We came across High Street on Market and were able to nab a seat. The place is small so don't expect privacy. Servers were prompt and attentive. Food was high quality with attention focused on flavor. We both enjoyed our choices. Think the same place is owned by FORK next door which looked like a great place for dinner.

Great ambiance and superb, healthy, creative food. Possibly the best breakfast I've ever had - we had the avocado toast and the grilled stone fruit salad with ricotta. Highly recommended!!

This restaurant was recommended to me and I’m so glad I decided to eat here. The service and food were spectacular! I arrived before dinner started but they let me order tea and wait the 20 minutes. I was very thankful as it was 35 degrees outside. Once I ordered they brought delicious bread and black olive olive oil. WOW, they were really good. I ordered the chicken as my server said it was the best chicken he had eaten. Now, I’m from the south where fried chicken is done right, so I thought, I have to try to it. It did not disappoint! This southern girl really enjoyed the chicken!!!! If your on Market Street, I would highly recommend High Street Restaurant!

We recommend doing the "chef's choice" - you can sample so many menu items that way. 2 out of 4 of us don't eat red meat and they were extremely accommodating; it was a pescatorian/vegetarian's feast! Really delicious, unique food; terrific and friendly service, and not in a stuffy atmosphere. One of our best meals in a long time, and we eat out all the time! (Mostly in NYC.)

Went there with my wife for breakfast 12/31/2016. No bagels. No refills on coffee offered by our server. My wife's old fashioned baked oatmeal was old fashioned boring and tasteless. My house cured salmon on a pretzel roll lacked taste pizzazz. The fried capers with it, nah. Don't do that to capers. We left quite disappointed.

Wonderful lunch at High Street on Market. My advice is to go early, they fill up quickly. I had the Best Grilled Cheese Ever and it was excellent. The Old Bay Potatoes were amazing. One order is big enough for at least 2 people to share.

Popped in here for breakfast at the start of my tourist day. Lovely welcome from staff even though I was first in ! Hot water for my own tea - no problem. Took the Italian market breakfast. Salami, eggs, broccoli, ham and scrambled eggs. Along with roast spuds ! Very nicely done. Kept me carb loaded for a days walking ! Reasonable prices too.

Wonderful breakfast in this little cafe. Bagels and chocolate croissant were excellent! Coffee was spectacular!!

We shared mushroom soup, roasted Brusselsprout salad, and a breadboard. The food tasted fresh, well prepared and nicely presented. Very nice atmosphere with friendly service.

My daughter and I had fabulous homemade ginger yogurt for breakfast while my husband ate a more traditional breakfast. We all loved all of our food and enjoyed the atmosphere as well.

The hostess and server were very attentive and helpful. The Ricotta Gnocchi – gottagettagoat, grilled corn, purslane pesto and Steak & Potato – hanger steak, tater tots, grilled broccoli, buttermilk were INCREDIBLE! Wine list was small but the server was amazing at helping me decide on a fantastic local red.

Fresh baked bread, breakfast was outstanding - fresh ingredients fabulous coffee. Excellent wait staff.

On a wet and chilly Saturday afternoon, we were looking for a place for lunch. Every place was packed, and so was High Street, but we decided to wait. Great move! The place is small and cozy with excellent service. We sat at the "communal" table to avoid the wait. It was comfortable and we had a wonderful chat with a visitor from Iowa! We were treated to a comp bread board. The fresh made bread is outstanding and you can buy loaves to go. The buckwheat cherry was my favorite. I had the duck Cubano and my wife had the "best grilled cheese". Both were rich and very satisfying. One of our table mates had the Pastrami (cut 1/4 inch thick) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of locals seem to come so I really recommend tourists to try it and meet some people and get some sightseeing tips. One of our table mates needed directions and was very happy to hear about the Phlash (a free bus that circles around the downtown area). Only criticism is the meager beer selection. I'd love to see some stouts or porters added.

After visiting the Jewish Museum in Philly, we and three other couples were ready for lunch; the local couple in our group recommended this place -- an inspired choice. Each of us was quite pleased with our lunch selection. Service was quite good too. Reasonably priced.

Quaint & delicious restaurant that works well for vegetarians. Great bread & creative menu. Well worth any wait. Good for business lunch too.

I went with friends from work for a special lunch. It was a rainy day, and there was no wait. The mushroom soup with fried parsnip garnish was perfect. I had the whitefish openface sandwich. It was very pretty to look at (reminded us of a sailing ship), delicious, but a little awkward to eat. Good thing we didn't care. My friends had duck meatball sandwiches. He inhaled his, and she saved half of hers for tomorrow. Everything on the menu sounded good. I got a loaf of the anadama bread to take home. I am eating it now, with butter, for dessert. Should have just skipped dinner. It's that good.

I went with a friend for dinner as this was a restaurant I wanted to try. Our server was great and let us try some wines before choosing a bottle. The wines and bubbly are priced both by the glass and bottle. We were there for dinner and selected the blue fish spread, the steak tartar appetizer , the dumplings, the tile fish, and had finished with the chocolate mint ice cream. I really like the bluefish spread and the dumplings were great. The bluefish came with a jalepeno sauce which I was a great addition. We had to pick up a friend at the airport and were running late so they made sure the kitchen knew so I got out on time. We were there on a Tuesday night early and it was busy so reservations are essential. This is a sister restaurant to Fork. While I think the food at Fork is good after a terrible experience with being rushed for dinner I vowed never to go back. That was years ago and I have never returned but I would return to HIgh Street.

We went to High Street on Market for brunch in a heat wave. The restaurant too, seemed to sweat. I know air condition can be a personal taste thing (cool, cold, freezing) but this was not really cool. Kind of like their water. Having said that their food was fresh and good. Interesting and unusual combinations and I mean that in a good way. The avocado toast that I had was excellent, the side salad, well it looked like I was eating carrot greens. The CCC drink was nice and so was the Italian Market classic breakfast. (Great potatoes). To sum up, everything was a little different from what we expected, but is that a bad thing?

Walking down 9th n Market to get fresh fruit n veggies plus eclectic shops of various things is FUN!! Italian restaurants, deli's and bakeries are yummy!! Make a day of it.

Restaurant came highly recommended by a family member as well as many websites and Yelp. Also featured as one of the best Philly restaurant week deals. It did not disappoint. The restaurant week deal was 3 courses for $35. Considering the main menu items are in the 20s and low 30s this is a great deal. Started out with some of their famous bread which was laced with orange peel. It was a nice change from plain bread. It was fluffy on the inside with a crispy crust as bread should be. I had the negroni. We also got some apps including burrata, cheese curds with shishito peppers and Damariscotta Maine oysters - loved all of these! The oysters were so fresh, burrata was creamy, and the addition of shishito peppers to the cheese curds was nicely balanced. For our mains we chose the steak and mushroom and corn pasta. I am a sucker for mushrooms and pasta so I was a happy camper. My husband's steak was perfectly cooked and tender. For dessert we tried the banana pudding that was topped with peanut brittle and a Boston cream cake. By this time we were struggling to finish our meal. The banana pudding was good but it was a little thin compared to what I'm used to but flavor was there on both desserts. The service was excellent even though they were swamped they still managed to frequent our table and refill waters as needed. I liked the outside seating area where we people watched and enjoyed the breeze.

I stopped in for breakfast during the week and was treated to a great sandwich and exceptional service. Its a very low key spot with interesting (and delicious) menu choices. Out of the ordinary in a really good way! The coffee was wonderful as well. The waiter was very helpful.

Went with a group of 6, had to wait a few minutes on a busy Sunday morning. The menu was simple with different dishes than your typical brunch menu. The breakfast sandwiches were great, the italian market was a nice nod to PA food. Service was attentive but you will be sitting for a while.

I stopped in at 11AM on a Monday, so it was not busy but by no means abandoned. Very quick and responsive service. Great coffee. I ordered the Italian Market breakfast, tons of food (and calories...) potatoes, eggs, bologna, broccoli, bread, salami... all good. I would only recommend knowing menu before stopping in under assumption you'd get a "normal American" breakfast like bacon or pancakes. If you want something with a different flair, in a cozy and friendly spot, come here!

We were visiting Philly and HSOM was suggested to us by a friend for lunch on the day we were visiting Old City. We were walking around the area and noticed this restaurant and decided to eat here, then realized it was the same restaurant our friend had suggesting, further confirming our decision. It is a small restaurant so we had to wait awhile for a seat, but it was well worth it. I had the duck cubano which was incredible, and my husband had the mushroom soup which he loved. We also split the Old Bay Potatoes and it was the perfect lunch for us! While it was a little pricey, it was well worth it for the delicious lunch we had in Old City!

We had breakfast here on Sunday morning around 10. I was surprised we were able to stroll in and get a seat because the food was out of this world. Seriously. Try the pastrami breakfast sandwich - best damn thing I ate the entire time I was in Phili. It was so good in fact, that we left with "one of everything" from the bakery. And one of everything wasn't that expensive either!

Best grilled cheese ever was really good. Pastrami was a huge sandwich that was also really good. Busy with locals.

The food here is so delicious, you find yourself wanting to re-read the menu to know what flavors are dancing in your mouth. The bread is absolutely amazing-so fresh and light. The portions are just the right size to enjoy your food without overdoing it. Excellent service too.

High street is a small, street level casual eatery serving whole grains, interestingly cooked vegetables, and creative meals. You can go vegan, or not. Staff is friendly & helpful. Open kitchen. Some sidewalk tables. Lots of choices-so many that it was hard to decide. Everyone in our party of 8 enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Very reasonable prices for the very good food quality: about $17 each for lunch. Easy walk to downtown museums. Recommended.

Waiting to tour Independence Hall. Found this restaurant a couple of blocks away and stopped in for lunch. Sandwiches were made fresh as we watched, using housemaid breads and hand cut meats. The grain bowl was delicious, with fresh, clean ingredients. We topped off our meal with fresh homemade peach pie topped with housemate blueberry ice cream. Everything was perfection!

We're tourists here for the 4th of July and were anxious to have a hearty breakfast to start our first day in Philadelphia. Unfortunately we landed at High Street on Market and were sorely disappointed in the food. We both opted for The Forager which includes an egg, kale and a large mushroom stacked high on a very small bun, making it impossible to eat and not create a total mess. Additionally, I'm not sure what they did to that mushroom, but it was impossible to bite thru and I could not cut it with a fork. Pretty disgusting. And to top it off, this small, unappetizing sandwich was $12. If you are looking for breakfast, I suggest you go elsewhere.

The menu is unique, being original make you try alot of items and dishes. We had the Kitchen choice Dinner, they picked a 8 course meal for us. It was expensive but worth it, $55 a person. We loved 3 of the dishes, liked 4 of them and didnt care for one. But still wow, the variety, tempura Broccoli, Lamb Shanks, Stinging nettle Pasta with crab and so much more! The service was good the food was great and the selection is great.

This is not a full menu operation...so don't judge it by that. It's a small high quality short menu excellent ingredient cafe...but very good at what they aim to do! The Turkey sandwich unusual and delicious. The full grain waffle among the best I've eaten and you feel like its healthy. The latte was strong and delicious and well worth the cost. This place is good, and the crowds waiting for tables prove it. Great stop on a day of tourism in beautiful downtown Philly.

We had a great lunch at High Street today. The sandwiches are amazing and we love that they make bread in house. Friendly staff and great food. Can't go wrong here. :)

So today I started with some Eden Cider Imperial Rose. It was very good and a different take on wine. For starters I had the shrimp egg roles. This is not your typical egg role they are very light and not fried. Then for the main course of had the Duck carbonara. The half size was perfect. Though it was salty it was still good and not to filling. To top it off I ended with a apple bread pudding ice cream and some Tawny Port wine. Both were great end complimented each other. The server was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. I will definitely be back.

Service was just getting off the ground when we arrived but the wait was worth it for the food. Service was attentive and it's a bakery too!

A fantastic brunch at High Street. I had the baked eggs and my husband had the bialy platter. But before these, we shared a slice of poppyseed pound cake. We had great service from our server, Adam; and the owner, Ellen Yin, came out to check on our meal and see if we needed anything. Great location, great food and great people.

Went during a stay in Philly and almost went back the next morning for more! The bologna and bun appetizer was amazing and mushroom soup was fantastic. We were there on a Sunday night so there was a potato bar but sadly no one in our group partook. My husband had the chicken and it was incredibly juicy and well cooked. What was also incredibly nice about the spot was that our table wasn't ready when we first arrived so we went to fork next door for drinks and they came and got us when our table was ready!! Will definitely return when I am back in Philly.

This review is going to come across as suspiciously glowing, so I hope you’ll believe that I am merely a Brit holidaying in Philadelphia who has no connection to this restaurant; my husband and I simply chose it for dinner (based largely on TripAdvisor reviews) and were blown away. The room is simple, the staff are casual but knowledgeable and proficient, the clientele is comprised of dressed-down, civilised locals. And the food - oh, the food! - is simply, and uniformly, stunning. We shared dishes majoring on curried cauliflower, roast beets, belly pork, crisp mixed veg, grilled fish, sweet potato pie (like pumpkin pie) and pecan/bourbon pie. Every dish sang with gutsy flavours, clever texture combinations and sound seasoning. The fish, for example, had blistered, crisp skin and moist, flavoursome flesh; no specialist fish restaurant ever cooked a fillet of white fish better. An off-dry Riesling and a merlot from the all-American wine-list were impeccably served and much enjoyed. Two glasses of each plus the food and service came to $180 which is not cheap for a simply decorated, neighbourhood restaurant, but we didn’t begrudge a cent. If I eat a more swoon-inducing meal in the next 12 months, I shall be mightily surprised.

We didn't know what to expect. The staff were very helpful and described almost all of the menu items. We choose the breakfast sandwich with the Lancaster bologna and I was pleasantly surprised. The jalapeño sauce they bring is fun too!

Stopped in for lunch, little over priced for the food we got but was tasty. Service was good but not many tables so be prepared to wait at busy times. Restrooms were hot, no AC? Interesting salads and sides. Different types of bread you could buy and take away.

Our home restaurant. We love it there! The team is (almost always) very welcoming: the hostess, the waiters, the su-chef. The ambience is warm. And the food is great. highly recommended.

Rude staff and very average food. Don’t waste your time!! Breakfast sandwich was just ok but the worse part was the he/him working there. More interested in instantgram photos than customer service

Popped in here for a quick breakfast, and was so pleased! The bacon egg sandwich, was so delicious. I was skeptical about it being on a roll, but it was great. The almond croissant though...perfection. I wish I had gotten a bag of them to go. They had a great looking selection of already made salads and snacks, to grab and go, along with a nice looking selection of breads and pastries to go. No where to dine in, but a few tables on the sidewalk to stop and enjoy your goodies.

We sat at the high table with stools as we were late getting a reservation. We loved it. With an excellent view of the cooking action , we felt part of the action in the best of ways. We ordered six items from the varied menu. Each one proved creative and delicious. The staff could not have been more gracious. HINT:MAKE RESERVATIONS as soon as you know you want to go.If there are none, go early in the day and ask in person. They really try to accommodate.

Well, first impressions do count. An odor, somewhere between that of human sweat and a sewer, greeted me on my arrival. The waitstaff must be used to it, for when asked they could not smell it. However, the staff were attentive. Perhaps the best feature of the place. It well suits young men in their thirties who wear dark clothing, sport short cropped beards, talk with loud voices and have that particular hairdo which consists of short sides and a swept-back greased tuft oh hair on top. The food? Talking of grease, both the beet salad and the Branzino to follow were barely indistinguishable; and were characterized by blackened greasy blobs sitting limply on greasy-looking rice. I could hardly wait to leave. Whoever dished out 4 1/2 stars here must have been severely sedated or perhaps fresh from a long stint alone on a remote desert island. Yes, there is work to be done here, I’m afraid.

Had a delightful dinner at High Street. Very creative menu and a staff that really knows the food. The cheese board changes daily, and was exceptional. The Mushroom plate was off the charts. The spaghetti with clams was also terrific with a nice spicy kick. Great spot for brunch.

The artisanal breads and egg dishes with fantastic Rival brothers small batch coffee make for a delicious breakfast. Lunch salads again with the great breads are also good

They have a smoked salmon sandwich that is to die for. Pair it with some Old Bay potatoes and you have a wonderful meal. It was so good I even ordered the same thing the next day Both times fortunate to sit outside on a beautiful day. Service was good both times. Highly recommend

I just visited my daughter last week and ate breakfast here 3 out of six days, yes, it is that good. Once I was alone and felt so welcome dining alone wasn't weird! The menu has plenty of options, however my favorite was the beet cured salmon. I have to mention their butter cake...WOW. Delicious, sweet, crunchy exterior and tender inside. I bet I could eat them every day, I almost did!!! I did not get there for lunch, I will on my next visit!

I just visited High Street for the second time in about 6 months and found this experience to be not as top notch as the first visit. Why? Service and noise. I may be assuming the mantle of grumpy old guy, but I struggle with the din in some of these nicer restaurants. On the plus side: no TVs. Downside: we had to move tables when we couldn't hear each other chat. And since the place is so small, we had limited options (the high top community table - which is nice, but not quite as private). Anyway, really nice overall experience, just... well, a bit too loud....

We were on a quick visit to Philly for our daughters graduation. Decided on a quick visit to Independence Square. For lunch we decided on visiting High Street on Market mainly based on TripAdvisor reviews. The 5 of us all had different choices and that all were fabulous. My choice, the Cuban Duck and Ham sandwich was simply perfect. Good diverse choices while not going overboard. The atmosphere in the restaurant was good and service was spot on. If there was a negative it was the fact that they ran out of the squash soup which happened to be my wife’s initial choice. All in all an excellent option for lunch. I would go back there in a heartbeat. Recommended!

Everything we tried was perfectly prepared. The service was spot on, and the ambiance works. Well worth the 20-minute wait.

Went there for lunch and had the "Best Grilled Cheese on Earth." It was quite good. Hope to ha e dinner there sometime.

If you’re in Philadelphia treat yourself to dinner at this amazing little bistro type place. They are known for their breads so make sure you ask for some bread and butter. The crunchy broccoli… I’d go there every night to eat that if I could. Place is very busy so make sure you make a reservation. Run don’t walk there.

Visited for a quick breakfast on our last day in town. The breakfast sandwich was very good. The place was a little spendy but hey, I don't begrudge someone making a buck. The thing that keeps me from rating this place higher was the service. It just seemed like these people were indifferent to the fact that we were paying customers! The service was a little slow and we had to remind our waitress for the pastry we ordered. Look, not a deal breaker...would definitely try again. Maybe they just had a bad day.

I had a solid business breakfast here. I had the 'hickory town' egg sandwich which was lovely, washed down by good coffee. The staff were attentive and the atmosphere good. I would happily return. Not sure about dinner here. More a breakfast place for me.

Small al fresco bistro in historic district serving brunch, lunch and dinner on Sunday. Tasty sandwiches with a spicy twist from trimmings on both turkey and pastrami. Pleasant service but limited bar options for wine and beer. I do recommend the sandwiches. Would have deserved a 5 if not for limited bar selections

High Street on Market is the casual sister of Fork, the elegant and prestigious restaurant next door. At High Street, you can get freshly baked artisanal breads, beautifully composed and delicious lunches, and creative, stellar dinners. Prices are reasonable especially for the quality. For lunch, try the Philadelphia Fog tea, the cured salmon toast, or the duck cubano.

My first time here and definitely my last. 5 empty tables and took them 15 minutes to seat me. When I was taken to my table, the waiter rudely dropped a menu off without introducing herself. Came back 10 minutes later asking me what I wanted. I asked for her opinion on two different menu items, and she rudely answered that she wouldn't know what I want. The sandwich I ordered was absolutely basic, nothing special. Never again. Waste of time and money.

The service was OK. The food, noise levels, warm water for the table, seating and pricing were the major issues. There are many good places to eat in Philly but this place is not one of them.

My go -o freshly baked Artisanal/Whole Grain Breads. Only serious bread bakers in Old City. I recommend this bakery/restaurant to out-of-towners and to local residents-like me. Lots of complex whole grain breads that are reasonably priced for the quality of the breads. Much better than Whole Foods baked goods.

Croissants, ginger yogurt, steel cut oatmeal, coffee. High Street on Market had some of the best takes on these simply starters! Would definitely eat here again!

Breakfast was filling and fairly good but short of excellent, the choice of pastries was limited, the service was good.

So we went early. Walked in when they opened. The line formed behind us rather quickly. So be aware that you may wait. It’s worth the wait though. The Hickory Town and the Avocado Toast were worth buying again. The coffee was hot and good and the wait staff was superior. You shouldn’t be disappointed.

High Street was highly recommended by our hotel staff and I wonder- either I missed something or I know nothing about food. While I applaud the uniqueness of the menu, it seems way too limited and too expensive. The food, whatever little portions we got was too spicy and prepared with mismatched ingredients. We dined here for breakfast but we were not impressed. My goodness, we even had to pay for our bread. The place was very busy so it is understandable that we had to wait quite a while for a table. The server was friendly and accommodating which made up a little for the disappointing menu selection and food prices. We will back to Philadelphia but we will be on the lookout for a new breakfast location.

What a surprise this little place is. It has a simple menu with very complex flavors. You must have the spicy crab spaghetti; it is delightful. They have a great wine list with a lot of great local choices on it. They also have a full bar. Leave room for dessert, you won't be sorry. It is a tiny little place so consider a reservation for dinner.

The food served here is interesting and I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't feel like I was at the Varsity in Atlanta with someone constantly asking "what will you have". It just seemed like they were really trying to turn tables asap. The food was very good, albeit, somewhat overpriced. I don't generally like sharing an entire meal and this was no exception. There were a few items we ordered that I really liked and some that I didn't care for. The restaurant was too warm for comfort.

Lovely setting, good acoustics, nice vibe. Staff was very friendly and more than happy to help us pick some spectacular local wines. The breads were to die for and most dishes were really very good and imaginative, some were a miss but that was mostly due to differences in taste. We had a lovely, relaxed dinner.

Wild mushroom soup (non-dairy!), turkey and green goddess dressing sandwich, avocado toast with pickled onion, fried Brussels sprouts salad— we walked out full and more than satisfied with the delicious combinations. Service was quick and friendly. Can’t wait until our next visit!

Enjoyed a truly wonderful breakfast. The bread is magnificent. Interior nice and staff friendly. Good place!

We went here for breakfast while in town for The People's Convention (activists congregating to keep progressive politics moving past this electoral cycle). Liked it so well that we went back for dinner. It is small, unpretentious (but kinda trendy/hipster at the same time), with uniformly friendly, warm, and helpful staff. Everything we had was fresh, thoughtfully combined with other ingredients, and really, really tasty. The meat was tender and flavorful. You might to order the yolk cooked through so it wouldn't squirt like ours did. For breakfast we had a pastrami with hash sandwich that was served on a lovely poppy seed bun with a fried egg and other tasty veggie bits added to the pastrami and potatoes, We also had the full Italian breakfast with Old Bay fried potatoes, all-beef bologna, pastrami, broccoli rabe, fried eggs, and toast. Dinner is small plates--kinda tapas-ish--of a wide variety of tastes. The standout for us was a warm salad of mixed greens (and reds) with sautéed mushrooms and red onions, slices of fresh mushroom, other bits of this and that, all tossed with a coddled egg. The flavors were perfectly balanced and every bite was wonderful. Crispy cauliflower was like cauliflower tempura with buffalo wing sauce--again very tasty and not just like anything I've had before. Pork loin and a peekytoe crab pasta were both artistically prepared and presented and plenty tasty. Along with a classy cocktail and a glass of wine the total came in at about 55 bucks apiece. I think it was well worth it.

Walked all over looking for breakfast. Happy to have found this nice place. Nice interior, friendly staff, great eggs and bacon!

We had a Roasted Turkey sandwich and Kennett Salad with bbarley plus many more healthy stuff on it (mushrooms, braised kale, poached egg). Everything tasted great together. Had a nice lunch with my wife.

Enjoyed the pastrami hash sandwich. Very yummy. Great touch with the roasted peppers. Nice spice but not too hot.

We selected the place based on trip advisor reviews. The place is worth a visit. Very friendly staff, nice interior and the food was delicious. The cocktails were very good as well. Definitely recommend to go there and enjoy.

I like restaurants with a limited menu, that tells me they do a very good job with what they offer. I'm never impressed with a multi-page menu "book". Nobody can prepare all o those items without cutting some corners . . . . I had a Bloody Mary, perky spicy, too much ice for the size glass. Ordered the "breakfast platter", sliced bologna, scrambled eggs, broccoli and a leafy green steamed, a paper thin slice of coppa, fried potato chunks with Old Bay seasoning. Very full at the end of the meal, the portions are just right. Inside or outside dining,we chose outside, lovely breeze, though the street was close there was not much gas fumes smell in the air!

Recently stopped in for breakfast based on brief reference in a article, so expected good but was completely blown away. While the menu is limited and the prices are a bit on the high side, everything was super fresh with amazing flavor so great value for the money. My wife had the Italian Market breakfast (Lancaster bologna, farm eggs, roasted broccoli rabe, old bay fried potatoes, toast and a fried pepper). The combination of flavors was awesome and the potatoes were to die for. I had the amazing Pastrami and Hash breakfast sandwich. The bun was super fresh and pastrami is made in house. We finished by sharing a piece of the butter cake and it was one of the best pastries we've had in years. I will find reasons to return to Philly just to eat breakfast here again.

Nice, somewhat Trinity Place, in an area of Center City Philly where they could use something like this. Interesting, sort of fashionable"nouvelle"cuisine. In addition to my lunch, was able to taste that of two others, so think I got a decent sampling of their offerings. Who was in general well prepared and tasty, with some imaginative bakery items which were quite good. Only concerns were that the meat in my sandwich was somewhat skimpy for the price, and in general prices were a bit too high for this kind of restaurant in this area of Philly-- more like NYC pricing! So that was enuf over my budget enough so that I probably won't go back anytime soon!

Friendly interested and interesting staff. Excellent service and high quality food. Best sea bass cooked to perfection that I have tasted. Lovely blend of flavours to enhance these ultra fresh ingredients.

Portions were adequate for pricinf, friendly staff, fresh ingredients and ***bread made fresh in restaurant***

Visited this place last week for Restaurant Week in Philly. Have a really cool bar next door at Fork which is same owner. Pleasant tasteful dishes. I had the spicy broc app that was outstanding followed by amazing red snapper fish entree. Professional courteous service. Neat decor, rustic. Definitely will be back.

A change in plans resulted in our trying this friendly & interesting eatery. Marvelous beverage and dining options, very helpful staff, and cool vibe. Will return when working in the area.

This is our second visit for dinner. The quality has gone down a bit - some of the food was superb (Duck carbonara) but some was just OK (the salad). It was all overpriced, especially the tiny strawberry dessert for $10. The service was excellent. The bread didn't wow me this time like it has in the past. There were a lot of options for vegetarians which was much appreciated. Still worth a trip but has slipped a bit.

Outstanding experience! The coffee is among the best I’ve ever had! The brand is called Passenger and the blend is called “Necessary “. Full bodied and nicely sour and acidic. They are known for their pastries and my husband loved the donut. I had the Coppolini onion bialy with lox and Philadelphia schmear. Lots of capers, shaved carrots, radishes, sprouts, etc. Felt really healthy. Excellent, attentive service.

Great food, great service. And the peach donuts are the BEST donuts I have ever had, ever! It is worth the wait to get in.

Busy place for lunch but worth the 20 minute wait. It's a small cozy restaurant known for having awesome bread. And it is. There were four of us for lunch. The guys split their sandwiches of pastrami on rye and roasted pork. Us girls had the Chef Salad. Nice green goddess dressing made with yogurt instead of mayo. Everything was very good and service was great.

Had a great brunch with friends. Kale Caesar, baked eggs, Dutch baby - all were delicious. Other menu items looked tempting as well. The noise level was under control, which makes conversation easy. And they didn’t rush us to give up our table. Look forward to returning.

Best avocado toast I’ve Ever had anywhere. Would also recommend the Reuben- thick and scrumptious. So friendly. Saw lots of local hospital staff drop in for takeout, too.

We enjoyed a pre-concert meal there. The bread and dips were terrific. Swordfish belly was to die for. Pasta dish was delicious but overpriced. Great ambience

This place was crowded, testifying to its popularity. Great sandwiches with artisan bread, unusual condiments, and sodas such as sweet corn vanilla. Service was good allowing for the crowd. Would return next time I'm in Philly.

Had breakfast here last week with my brother and wife. This is not your average breakfast restaurant, but one that creates unique dishes - including baked oatmeal. Should be on your list to visit. Nice atmosphere, friendly service, and very good food. Recommend.

Two of us stopped in for breakfast. We sat down at a table and we were cautioned by the people sitting next to us that service was very slow. We waited 20 minutes and not even a hello by the only waiter who was a male (reddish hair and beard). My friend finally went to him and asked him for 2 menus. He had a major attitude. He would only give her one menu even though there were about 10 menus under him on the counter. We waited another 15 minutes. He never even acknowledged our existence. We finally left.

Limited lunch menu. The curry butternut squash soup was excellent, and the pastrami sandwich was big enough to share. The only disappointment was the dessert.

My wife and I had lunch at this small restaurant in downtown Philly on our recent trip. I had the roast pork sandwich, which a local blog declared the best sandwich in Philly. Can't argue the point. My wife had the duck Cubano and loved it, although she could not finish it - the bread was way too thick. The place is fairly small and there are no reservations. There is seating out on the sidewalk if you like that. Service was very good and the food arrived after an appropriate interval. The noise level was pretty good given how many folks were there. Well worth a trip.

I have been here many times and it is always good. The bread is gourmet and I recommend the bread plate to sample. I loved the turkey sandwich which is like everything at High st., a little different. Great pastries, not too sweet.

Incredible evening with family at this special dining experience. Because we had a group of 5, we sat at the high table. Service was incredible, and food was off the charts! Really encourage reservations and giving this place a try! We will for sure on our next visit.

We happened upon this place and we were delighted. All our sandwiches were the absolute best. We had three, turkey, pastrami and eggplant sandwiches. Can't go wrong with any of them because they were all delicious.

Dropped in for some coffee and avocado toast. It was quite yummy and would recommend a visit. Be aware seating is limited.

Went here for a quick breakfast/brunch on our way out of the city. It's cute inside, but we did choose to sit outside since the weather was nice. Service was a little slow, and the food was meh with a high price point for what was served. The dinner menu looks good, but no fireworks for me. I had the oatmeal, which was tasty, and my wife had some avocado toast, which was also good, but all-in-all we wish we would have found somewhere else.

Brunch was really good - Italian Market Breakfast included eggs, grilled bologna, copper, broccoli rabe, and potatoes - something different - lots of food on this platter and worth every bite. My sister had oatmeal - looked and tasted normal. This place has an eclectic menu so it is worth trying something new. Everyone around me (the place is pretty small) was enjoying their meal.

Unique dishes with varying flavors. Fun place for Sunday brunch. Great hash. Very suitable for families with small kids.

Wow, just wow> The space is very nice, the service is excellent, and the food? It is amazing. Really top notch and unique. There is a full bar, open kitchen, and tables spread out enough for conversation. Bathrooms are unisex and very clean. I'd go here every week except it is pretty pricey. Gratuity is automatically added to your bill but they circle it and tell you when you go to pay. Well worth a visit

This place is a MUST GO when you're visiting Philly. The breads and pastries are perfect. Sandwiches are top notch. The salads are to die for. The desserts.... Oh my. I've been around, and this is by far one of the best eateries I visited in the world. No kidding. The place is packed during breakfast and brunch for a reason.

We had breakfast here on the way to the American Revolution Museum. They had some interesting, and delicious, options - like the ginger yogurt with pistachios and the breakfast reuben. The kids were happy with avocado toast and some of the bakery items like chocolate croissants. Overall, a fun stop right in the heart of Old City and near everything. Would like to try their lunch or dinner sometime.

Had lunch here while touring Philly. Turkey sandwich was delicious. My wife had a grain salad that was spectacular. Service was friendly and quick. The only down side is that it is really small and you are on top of each other. Seats are tiny and uncomfortable but I highly recommend the food. Looked like they were doing a lot of take out.

A very nice addition to Philadelphia's Old City area. The breakfast sandwiches and lunch menus are delicious. There is also a nice cocktail, beer and wine list. I highly recommend for people visiting Philadelphia.

We got the chef's choice for $55 and I say we were full by the last entree (half chicken) . I suggest they take out appetizers and add to the entrees or bring the entree sooner . The food was good and delicious but I don't see the value to go back there. Roasted Carrot hummus : nice bread ,good hummus Smoked bluefish: it tasted like tuna salad with smoked salmon added to it. I liked it but nothing special Smoked Mussel : very good taste and nice spinach creamy sauce . I am not a fan of seafood so if I say a seafood was good means it was GREAT Crispy broccoli : I don't like broccoli because t this was super yummy. I ate it all Beef tartar: I don't like the texture of raw beef.wont recommend it Duck egg carbonara: mehhhhh nope thanks heavy creamy spaghetti Squid ink angoloti : If I ever go back there I will ask for a plate of their angoloti with tart sauce no squid/clam. It was awesome minus the clam Kenneth square mushroom : very tasty mushrooms , different types. I love mushroom so I was in heaven eating this. Mushroom sauce was great Honey glazed half chicken: we were so ill at this point . Wings where really good. Chicken was fine. I recommend serving this a little bit earlier . It was some potato bread with some cheese on the side too Two ice creams : meh! Ok. I am not an ice cream fan so I can't really say much Blueberry with cream and some other berry : this was the most delicious dessert I have had for a long time . highly recommend Cherry tart: good texture not a bad taste second choice of dessert In sum:: Get the smoked mussel, kenneth square , half chicken and blue berry dessert and don't spend $55 per person to try it All

I was excited about High Street. It's a fun looking place. The food smells good and the staff is friendly. There was a delay in seating us despite a reservation. We started with a trio of spreads. Charred eggplant, Apple butter, and a third I don't recall. Each came with its own bread. They were all very good. After we had the spring rolls, which were fairly flavorless, and the brocoli, which were fine but fried and a bit oily. The pastas seemed interesting so we tried half portions of 3. The cauliflower pastas was excellent so we had high hopes for the others. The crab pasta was spicy without much else going for it. And the duck carbonara was ridiculously salty, and not good. We did mention it to the waitress and she was kind about it and removed them from our bill. One of the better dishes was the mushroom, sunchoke, and egg dish. A nice portion with good flavors, but not great. They also gave us a trio of desserts on the house which were pretty good. It was disappointing because there are clearly very good dishes. But others were just bad or average at best.

Stopped by for a late lunch and the place was packed. Hostess added us to wait list and promised to text us when table was ready. Noticing I was walking with a cane she brought me a chair. Very gracious and warm first impression! The lunch menu was simple and quickly prepared. They even accommodated by wife's VEGAN needs. My chicken salad on thick, home baked bread was delicious and the mushroom soup delicious! Highly recommended!

Amazing amazing. Simple as that. Been here for breakfast and lunch. Great atmosphere and obviously food is spot on.

Mostly sandwitches on lots of bread. As much as the Grilled Cheese was great to eat, I think it was too rich for me and I won't get it again. However, everything was fresh and the breads were very good.

Arrived just as they changed from serving breakfast to lunch, and the waiter was happy to provide the lunch menu. The roasted mushroom soup was rich and VERY tasty. The roast pork sandwich was moist and the fermented broccoli rabe was a good counterpoint. Also delicious was the mushroom melt, with the apples being the a key component. Service was quick and friendly, and due to our arrival time, there was no wait!

I'm giving this breakfast place five stars! The food was delicious and inventive. I loved the smoked salmon on a pretzel roll. The breakfast Reuben on rye with egg was over the moon for my husband. Very popular place - go early or be patient. I wish I could go back for lunch on this trip.

Loved the chicken and corn muffins and the wine was also very good. My server was fast, friendly and accommodating and the dimly lit room had a wonderful ambiance...perfect for a date night.

Delicious lunch with fresh and creatively conceived food. Bread sampler with apple butter and regular butter - delish. Crisp crusts. Different and tasty chef salads, including something called bologna, but really high quality and tasty, as an ingredient. Best of all was pastrami on homemade rye. Excellent thick cut pastrami with great stuff on it. Chocolate chunk cookie on the way out was great too. Not fancy place, but does what it does really well.

Looking for a little something for breakfast and decided on High Street on Market. A small, modest eating area that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We hit peak breakfast and got the last open table. Staff was attentive and pleasant. Oatmeal, yogurt, an oyster mushroom breakfast sandwich and chocolate croissant and we were very satisfied.

My husband who scopes out restaurants had hoped to have dinner at Fork. When our concierge service was unable to secure reservations at Fork, he suggested High Street on Market. It's a small, intimate space that didn't disappoint us. We shared 3 delicious Artisan breads with hummus, nut butter and peach jam, heirloom tomatoes with fresh mozzarella cheese, and a large plate of "Crabby Spaghetti."

The bread and baked goodies were gorgeous looking on display and the two different ones we tried were very well executed. The cardamom dirt bomb was something like a pastry or kouign Au Mann texture with flavored sugar in the outside. It was glorious dipped in the coffee. The shortbread jam bar was buttery and short and crumbly and with just the right amount of jam on it. The forager breakfast sandwich was full of kale and the pickled mushrooms on it were an experience unto themselves. Additionally, there were plenty tu of good looking carry away options like ready made sandwiches and salads and tabouli and tzatziki etc.

We ordered some breakfast items to go: plain croissants, ham and cheese croissants, chocolate babka, banana chocolate muffins, chocolate chip cookie, caramel pecan cookie. They were all good and the ham and cheese croissant was outstanding. Friendly staff.

I was not enthused by our waiter who seemed quite aloof but the food was good and the ambience was lovely. It is small so you might need to be prepared to wait for a table at lunch (I saw a number of folks waiting for seats), but I understand they take reservations at dinner. We asked for bread with our salads and at first the waiter said we needed to order a bread board. When we said that is too much bread, he then said he could sell us each a slice. My slice was extremely small but the cobb salad was good. I thought, overall, it was overpriced for what we received. This would not be a first choice for lunch next time. There are too many other options in that section of the City.

We found this great little restaurant by chance. We were a part of 4- a vegan, a celiac, a dairy free and a Low FODMAP. There were great options for all. It took 2 times making one of the sandwiches, but they got it right and were very accommodating. The manager is wonderful. If you have food allergies or sensitivities, this is a great place to grab a bite. The Pinot Noir wine was quite nice, too. Excellent food.

This was our second time to HSoM for breakfast. It was even better this time. I think it was because we ordered communally -- a couple ginger yoghurts, a farmer's breakfast (with homemade bologna), a cornmeal cake with rhubarb, citrus fritters, and a couple other items. The diversity and quality was amazing!

High Street is simple and rustic... great breads, locally cured meats, farm fresh eggs all whipped up into delicious, real food meals. The bread is the star on every plate. Had a pastrami sandwich on thick rye bread this week that was mouthwatering... house cured pastrami, nice spicy mustard... no muss, no fuss, just straight up good food. My partner in crime had a perfect frilled cheese sandwich on potato bread - griddled to perfection. The restaurant is small and they only take reservations in the evenings. But the staff are attentive and love answering questions. These folks really support local small farms and makers. You can get a local beer or wine with your meal. What more do you need?

I wanted to go to Fork with a colleague. Unfortunately, they were booked, so they suggested the "sister" restaurant next door, which was High Street. Overall a good experience, but the food was always over the top with flavors. We had some appetizers, (the Broccoli was very good) and 2 entrees . The Chef needs to have a lot less "happening" on the plate and let the food shine a little more. our waitress was overwhelmed but very good. Probably will be back, but not rushing back too soon. Worth a try

I came here for breakfast as per NYTimes' recommendation. Great stuff. Ordered the Hickory Town breakfast sandwich which was delicious but small. Ordered a chocolate croissant and guess what?! It was cold take out of fridge so that the chocolate inside the croissant was still in shape that it came out of the tube. Being thick and hard, it wasn't pleasant to chew (when did you have to put effort into dissolving a chocolate croissant in your mouth 😂).

In town with family, we went here for breakfast. It was delicious. I had the ginger yogurt and a chocolate croissant. The other two had the baked oatmeal and toast.

This was the worse dining experience I have ever had and I grew up in Phila. and dine there often. This restaurant was hot, noisy, uncomfortable seating, excessively over priced food which was horrible, $7.00 for a can of beer, oven like bathrooms, tepid water which required you to ask for ice, small overly priced desserts .... The only thing half way decent was the bread which you had to purchase. There wasn't even salt and pepper on the table! If you go there, you better be HIGH!

We split a roasted turkey sandwich here and we may have made the wrong choice. The sandwich seemed skimpy on the amount of meat, but the flavor while listed as mild was on the spicy hot side. No problem with seating but it was after the lunch hour on a Monday.

My suggestion would be to make sure that you look at the menu first! I went on a recommendation and didn't check the menu first. I really wish I had. My friend and I ended up only getting muffins. There was nothing on the menu that even closely resembled a breakfast that I would go out and pay for. Although the silver lining was that it was very cheap.

My wife and I came here twice during our stay : this was a stand-out breakfast with lots of options for non-dairy and non-gluten. I loved the Italian Market Breakfast. Staff were super friendly and the vibe was lovely - we chatted to the couple sitting next to us, something we don't do very often. Absolutely recommended!

Yes, the title of the review was true even for a lowly sandwich. Cant remember what sandwich it was. Everything we ordered was good. We even had breakfast there the next day.

This is a nice place for a casual lunch or brunch. Be prepared to wait as there are no reservations and it is very popular. The open kitchen is nice in that you can check out some menu items before ordering. The mushroom soup is very good and the pastrami sandwiches are huge and easy to share. Their breads are excellent, especially the anadama and the ancient grains - both very moist. Order ahead or get there in the morning if you'd like to purchase a loaf to go.

Ordered the steak & shoe string potatoes. The steak was delicious, I just wish there was more of it. It was served pre-cut into bite-size pieces and there were only about 8 peices. It was not fillet, so I had expected more food when I ordered. Another person in my group ordered the same thing and we thought our plates together might have been considered one steak. The shoe string potatoes were so thin they had the texture of potato chips. They were piled high in a nest like fashion which makes a beautiful plate, but impractical to eat. You can't get them in your mouth without making them into potato chip crumbs. They were not warm because they were cut so thin, and once you break down the nest, you may realize there aren't that many of them - the nest was mostly air. I would consider the shoe-string potatoes more like a garnish. I would like to see them improve this dish, but I don't know if I'll be back.

Wonderful breads n breakfast dishes. Had the forager n others the Italian breakfast n both were tasty n filling. We were lucky that it wasn’t busy yet but once we told our server that we were trying to get somewhere in 45 minutes they made sure we got served in a timely manner yet didn’t feel rushed.

In town for a conference and my wife found this highly-regarded spot nearby the hotel, so we lunched. It was quite good. The place is a long narrow storefront like so many others in big eastern downtown areas. Nonetheless, it did not feel cramped, tho' some care is needed as you enter and exit to avoid bumping into people. The decor honors Philly's history with a big arial map of the downtown. The kitchen is open to the dining area--always a sign of confidence. We were seated oromptly and served instantly. My wife ordered an iced tea and a duck cubano--she reported it was excellent and the duck flavor made a difference. I got a good Pale Ale from Chicago and a bowl of their wild mushroom soup; the soup was savory but they finish it with some vinegar (I think it was a white wine vinegar?) which seems like a swell idea to cut across the savory, but I worry that they might have overdone it a few drops--it seemed a little astringent to me. My soup came with a slice of utterly crave-worthy rye bread which they bake in-house. The thing that puts them over the top on my ratings was rthe service. The wait staff moves consrantly at a good clip and works as a team. We would have waited for nothing if we desired it. Full praise to them!
Lunch literally "on" Market Street
We had a light lunch sharing the delicious Brussel Sprout Salad and Mimosas on the first really warm spring day this year. We sat outside enjoying the people and traffic. The tables were shaded by the building early afternoon in April. There are planters to shield the pedestrian traffic and dogs making the outside dining more enjoyable. We also ordered the side of bread, 2 slices of 3 different breads, honey butter and jam, delicious. Service was good considering the small number of tables outside and the distance the server needed to come to check on us. Perfect spring lunch!
